Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheon Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. Window Nation is the presenting sponsor of this show.
Starting point is 00:00:16 Call them at 86690 Nation or head towindonation.com if you need new windows. Tommy, this from Bosco 53. He may have been a Jeff Bostic fan because that was Jeff Bostick's jersey number. And Jeff Bostic's nickname was Boscow. I don't think this is Jeff Bostic. By the way, Jeff Bostic was a really good center and a really good interview for a long period of time. I can't remember the last time I had Boscow on the show, maybe a year or two ago. Absolutely. I might want to point out that Boscow was George Costanza's code to use his ATM card.
Starting point is 00:00:59 I think you've told me that before, yes. All right, here we go. Bosco 53 writes, Kevin, Tommy is right. The talk about Terry's contract has been exhausting, exclamation point, exclamation point. And now with it over, you and others care more about who won the standoff rather than just being happy that Terry is back on the team. What is it with you people? Who cares who got the better of the negotiations? Are you even a fan?
Starting point is 00:01:31 Can't you just leave good enough alone? You know, yesterday was one of those days, Tommy, where I'm not surprised, but I'm often on days like yesterday curious as to the responses of people. This actually is a response that I got from several people. This is the most exhausting to me. You know, not the people who have jumped to the final conclusion on who won the Terry standoff, because we won't know that until the actual numbers on the guaranteed dollars come out, maybe later today, who knows. I would encourage everybody to listen to my interview on yesterday's show with Michael Genetti.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Michael is the founder and editor of SpotTrack. But who cares? am I even a fan? We've been talking about this for months. We've been debating, you know, what the number would be, what the right number would be. You know, of course I'm interested in the details of this. And I don't understand how you could sit there and take part in this.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Look, the exhaustion and what Tommy said last week, I get that. And I got tired of talking. to it, talking about it as well. But now that it's over, you don't want to know how we got to the ending? You just are so happy as a fan? I don't know. That's weird to me.
Starting point is 00:03:09 I'm very interested. By the way, selfishly, I want to be right about my position on this, which is I thought that there was a number that made sense for the team. I didn't want the team to overpay for Terry. But beyond that, I mean,
Starting point is 00:03:26 somebody heard me talk about this on radio and said, how about just the fact that this is the first big contract negotiated by this new organization, and you don't want to know how they did? Like, that's the future of negotiating contracts and building rosters. This is a response that I got that makes no sense to me. Kevin. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:51 There's a media member who covers the team. Yeah. I'm not going to reveal who that is. No matter how hard you press me. But he posted, they posted on their social media account. I don't know the fascination with trying to find out exactly what Terry or the commanders were asking for. The deal is done.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Look, if that's your position, that's fine. But it doesn't make me less of a fan if I'm interested in this. Like, I just don't get how... It's a little bit bizarre. That's a little bit of a bizarre position. I think everybody, look, I understand why fans just want to block out the noise. Yeah, during the whole thing. But at the end, don't you want to know the ending? Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:41 I agree. Other than, oh, he just... He signed. It's great. Let me get my pom-poms out and my, you know, and my skin's belt, my commander's belt, and just be excited that they got a deal done. I don't know. It just seems so simple.
Starting point is 00:04:55 I think there's so much more to this stuff. But it's complicated, too. Yeah. It's a bit complicated because if I was a fan, as much as I love Terry McLaren, I would want Adam Peters to be the victor in this because long after Terry McLaren is gone, you hope that Adam Peters will still be here. Yeah. You know, and making further deals down the line with other people.
Starting point is 00:05:25 players and winning along the way. So if I was a fan as difficult it would be to turn against Terry in this case, I would want Adam Peters to have come out on top rather than be suckered by Terry and his agent. Yeah, which I don't think will end up being the case, but we don't know. We'll find out for sure. It certainly seems like, you know, most people that are covering this as reporters are hesitant to jump to the conclusion that many fans did, which is, you know, Terry crushed it.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Terry and his agent crushed it. Like I got, oh man, I got so many of these. This one came from Eli. Kevin, admit it, you had it all wrong. $32 million a year. $30 million signing bonus means the guaranteed money is going to be $65 million or more. Terry and his nincompoop agent, L.O.L. won this negotiation by CAO.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Yeah, we won't know that. That's another interesting part of this. It's like, is this your first, you know, fan reaction to a contract report? I mean, we all know as NFL fans, don't we? That the first initial reports, you got to wait for the detail that sometimes it's more of a marketing exercise to start,
Starting point is 00:06:49 especially there was a red flag on yes, yesterday's agent information, which is there was no guaranteed dollars listed as part of it. But look, you know, Eli, you might be right. And by the way, if Terry and his agent crushed Adam Peters and company in this negotiation, I want to know. It's interesting to me. And I will admit, I will absolutely admit, man, I can't believe they caved. I never thought it would happen.
Starting point is 00:07:21 I was wrong. We'll find out, though. We won't know for sure until the guaranteed numbers come out. And everybody that covers the NFL has pretty much indicated, including my guest yesterday, it is, you know, a red flag that the guaranteed dollars weren't put out by the agent. That is a bit of a tell that maybe they didn't get the deal they wanted. We'll find out. I think, like, somewhere in the, I basically gave a range here. North of 60 million and guaranteed, Terry and his agent won.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Between 55 and 60, call it a draw. Anything less than 55 million guaranteed, the team won the negotiation, Terry caved. And if it's 50 or less, Terry caved big time. I think that's an accurate numbers to come up with there. I think that's a good way to measure it. We saw some new reporting yesterday. Ben had it.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Diana Rusini had it. That Terry's initial ask was greater than Justin Jefferson money. Diana said it was $40 to $41 million per year, which would make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL. And it's really important for those that really just wanted it to end all along and thought it should have. And still, their recap is, why couldn't this have happened two months ago?
Starting point is 00:08:54 Well, because they were so far apart, obviously. Ben said that, you know, it was 25 was the, and that's where Fowler eventually got to after he said 23 or whatever. 25 was the teams in terms of Aav, and Terry's was, you know, north of 35. Diana says 40 to 41. That's a massive difference and tens of millions per year in difference in guaranteed money. And that's why it took long. That's why it took time. I think you pointed out on social media. And it's no revelation, but you did point it out. Deadline to make deals. I did. I don't even remember saying that on social media. I think you did. Okay. You posted it on your social media accounts. A good
Starting point is 00:09:43 thing I read your Twitter account. I don't. That doesn't, I mean, I certainly believe deadlines make deals, but I made the point that yesterday really wasn't a deadline. The true deadline would have been next week. Because there's
Starting point is 00:09:59 plenty of time now for Terry to get ready. But it's kind of a deadline because it's the last opportunity to have plenty of time to get ready. I don't remember tweeting that out. I think you read that from somebody else. But then again, I don't really know what I tweeted out.
Starting point is 00:10:16 I was watching the Cowboys documentary last night. So were you. I wasn't watching it last night, but I haven't watched a couple episodes, and when we complete it, we will discuss it. But I find it very interesting so far. I just, the idea, like, I almost, like, so you've invested all this time in following this standoff, this drama, and you don't care how it got resolved.
Starting point is 00:10:47 I don't, that's all the conversation's been about for months. What's he asking for? What are they offering? Where's, where's it going to settle on? Who's going to, who's going to win the negotiation? How does Adam Peters negotiate? This is the first big deal. How's it going to get resolved?
Starting point is 00:11:04 I can't imagine not being interested in that. But if you're not, that's fine, too, I guess. I think sports fans, real hardcore sports fans, are into this kind of stuff. But anyway, yeah, we'll find out. We'll find out for sure about what this deal was. I think later today, Terry's going to speak tomorrow. Adam Peters is going to speak tomorrow. Tommy's going to do the show with me tomorrow as well because he can't do Thursday.
Starting point is 00:11:38 And we'll wait for both Peters and Terry to talk. and then sort of respond to that on the show. By the way, I... Actually, I'll be out at the park tomorrow for the press conferences. Also, let me just mention real quickly. Two things can be true, per usual. More than two things can be true. You can be interested like I am in this resolution, how it got there,
Starting point is 00:12:06 who did, you know, what, who did well, who didn't, what it looks like with Adam Peters in a negotiation. But you can also be thrilled that Terry's under contract heading into next season, into this upcoming season. And that hopefully, presumably, certainly based on the agent's marketing of some of the details of the deal, Terry will feel wanted and acknowledged and respected in all of those things and be and kind of hopefully have a pep to his story. step, Tommy, heading into practice tomorrow. That's a good thing too because this team is in a Super Bowl window, the first of hopefully many to come with its quarterback.
Starting point is 00:12:51 But you want Terry and you want Terry locked up for at least the next two years and you want Terry being feeling wanted because there's no doubt he was hurt during this process. By the way, the team, you know, handled it there for a while anyway. But I would expect both sides to be like, hey, business is business, this is so great that we got this done. We love each other. We'll see. Okay. I mean, Terry should be elated once he steps on the field because then he enters what I call the solar system of Jaden Daniels. Talk about that, because I think you may have written about that today. Yes. Yes, basically, that's basically, this is like the last holdout he had back in
Starting point is 00:13:36 22. It wasn't much of a holdout. Right. He missed some mini-camp and some OTAs. But what was he returning to then? What was he missing? You know, he recognized he seemed like the only sane person in a madhouse. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:52 This time, I mean, he recognized last year how special, you know, an opportunity that he has, the team has, because of their young quarterback. And he's got it now, once he puts the business behind him, he absolutely elated that he gets another chance to play for this
Starting point is 00:14:13 young quarterback for the second part of his career. Yeah. Yeah. This is a totally different contract extension for Terry for so many reasons, including that reason. You know, God, you know, the, there are plenty of people, and I think you know this. that say that the last deal basically got done in short order or much shorter order because we were on the verge of congressional hearings
Starting point is 00:14:47 and they wanted to kind of divert the attention to something positive. Don't you remember the then-president, team president, who came back from California to seal the deal with Terry? Do you remember? Jason making a big deal about getting back just in time so he could, I don't know that he had anything to do with that deal. God, there was some crazy shit going on during that time. There was, there was absolute insanity going on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:24 You know, but let me ask you. That's one more thing about Terry. Do you think that Josh Harris had any influence on this negotiation? I do not. Do you? it's hard for me not to believe that he didn't. I mean, this is what he does. Adam Peters has never been a general manager.
Starting point is 00:15:46 He's been an assistant GM, and I'm sure he's been involved in negotiations, but he's never been the top dog before. And last, this past year was his first year. And Josh Harris is a dealmaker. I mean, I imagine it would be hard for me as the owner, not to have, I mean, not to dictate what my job. Well, that's what I'm talking about.
Starting point is 00:16:09 That's it. Okay. No, no, no. I mean, you know, he wasn't like, like he didn't learn about it when we learned about it, right? Right. Of course not. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Okay. He, I would imagine that Adam Peters and company kept the owner up to date with every conversation that took place. There's nothing wrong with that. And the owner probably gave his input. I under, okay. and experience and anything else because he does own sports teams? I would expect him.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I would expect him to. That doesn't mean he dictated what should be done. Yeah, that's what I'm saying I don't think happened at all. I don't think Josh Harris told Adam Peters, Lance Newmark and Company, this is what I want you to do. Get it done. No, I don't think he did either. Right. You know, Kime had in his story from a few weeks ago, and I'd have to dig it out to find it,
Starting point is 00:17:06 but I'll just paraphrase, that Josh Harris has been good about trusting his front office and not worrying about public sentiment and not bowing to, you know, because in the moment, fan sentiment was get it done, Terry's our guy, you know? Yes. I probably can find this somewhere.
Starting point is 00:17:33 But anyway, yeah. it's over, but I'm looking forward to the information that's still coming our way. There are a couple of other... You know what? Here's the other thing that certainly I would think is connected to the Terry McClorin deal. It wasn't a good day to be a wide receiver on the Washington commander's roster today. Because there are several getting cut? Because they're cutting them left and right.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Yeah, yeah. I mean, so today's the cut down to 53, and I was going to stretch this out before we get to the 53 man, so we get as much of the 53 man cuts in. We are recording early afternoon today. All of the cuts have to be made by 4 p.m. But I'll go through some of them. But to your point, actually, I think some are surprised to a certain extent that K.J. Osborne got released. I can give you the list right now. But you know why I'm going to give you the list right now is because something just hit. Sam Hartman released. He is a practice squad candidate for sure. That's not a surprise.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Sam Hartman didn't really look like he could play the position, honestly, at the pro level. And I'm just talking about his throwing ability. He was much more of a dual threat, you know, college quarterback. But the cut list started yesterday. and I gave you the six cuts yesterday. But today, Bobby Price Corner, KJ Osborne receiver, Duke Riley, linebacker. I think that means Cahoe, number 51, who I've been really high on. Just from the preseason evaluations, he just looks like an NFL guy.
Starting point is 00:19:20 I think he might make the team. Chris Moore, wide receiver released, along with KJ. Osborne, I think that means Jacori Brooks might make the team, number 16. He looked like a pro to me. Jalen Holmes, Foster, Sorrell, Cleland Farrell, Sam Hartman. Andre Jones just got released. He was that long-arm defensive end that was a pick back in 23. They're also releasing Carl Davis.
Starting point is 00:19:48 So that's what we have so far. I think they released Cleveland Farrell. I just mentioned that. Thank you. Did you really? I did. Jesus, I kind of block you out when you go through lists. It's true.
Starting point is 00:19:59 You block me out more than just list reading. Speaking of Sam Hartman, Sam Hartman has two things going for him to wind up on the practice squad. First, I think he's Jaden Daniels' best friend on the scene. Yeah, I think he's... Well, actually, Bobby Wagner might be his best friend, which is interesting.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Bobby Wagner's more of a mentor. I think Sam Hartman is one of his boys. Right. Yeah. You know? The second thing is he's a very good-looking man. Yeah, apparently he is. Yeah. He certainly would be a favorite of the, you know, of many in the fan base.
Starting point is 00:20:37 All right, real quickly, because I wanted to read these other emails here in the opening segment, because they are team-related. This from Jorge. Jorge writes, Kev, you keep saying that preseason games are meaningless, and I agree with that. But Washington is probably one of the oldest teams in the league. By the way, they are the oldest team in the league. league with their 90-man roster. We'll see how it shakes out on the 53.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And the fact that when the backups are playing, even against other backup units, they are horrible in capital letters. Imagine if Bobby Wagner or Frankie Louvre have to miss any games. Even rotating those guys would be a disaster for the team. I'm very excited about this season to see JD-5 in the offense, but I'm very worried about the defense. Jorge, I would just say this about 90% of the NFL teams. If you lose players like Wagner and Louvre, you're going to hurt. It's going to hurt badly. Most teams don't have unbelievable depth. Philadelphia does. Look at San Francisco last year. They have star players.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I mean, they have as many star players as any team in the league other than maybe Philadelphia. all of them got injured basically. Terrible. The key to Washington being a competitive team and winning more games than losing, even with massive injuries, is that one of them isn't to the quarterback. They'll be fine. Right.
Starting point is 00:22:17 But I don't think you should dismiss. You should dismiss his worry about. I'm not dismissing it. I'm not dismiss the depth. Because that's clear. I mean, they are in the early stages. of the reconstruction, rebuild. Recalibration.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Of this team. Yeah. Right. Recalibration. So, yeah, depth is going to be probably the last thing on the list they get to. You know, that's going to take some time. Depth. You want to talk about a team with depth.
Starting point is 00:22:47 You look at the Ravens, and they're always deep the Ravens are. You know, I mean, they draft well in three, four, and five positions where they gain their depth. But the commanders, the new regime hasn't been around long enough to build up the depth. That is a fair thing. I'm not, I'm not meaning to dismiss the importance of depth, okay? I'm not. But I'm telling you, it matters a lot less when you have an elite level quarterback. That's all I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:23:25 It's not that I'm not concerned about the depth and being able to overcome injuries, specifically Jorge, as you described on defense. I'm concerned about the defense going in anyway. I'm hopeful. I think it's going to be better. It would be hard for it to be much worse. But look, the depth on this football team, to your point, it's not just that you have a new regime,
Starting point is 00:23:48 but the old regime whiffed so many times in the draft. Oh, God, yeah. You know, this should be the year, you know, three years later that the 2020, draft is coming into its own. You know, Jehan Dodson, Phil Mathis, Brian Robinson, Jr., Sam Howe, Cole, Turner, Chris Paul, Christian Holmes. Chris Paul actually is going to make the team, and apparently has impressed people
Starting point is 00:24:15 out there. And Percy Butler, I think, has been a favorite of the staff. But their top three picks are no longer with the team. Then you go to 2023. This should certainly be a season in which your 2023 draft is starting to make its presence felt. no Emmanuel Forbes. Kwan Martin is a big time player.
Starting point is 00:24:33 And then Chris Rodriguez. That's it from that draft. Yeah. Let's hope, by the way, last year's draft starts to show some signs of life other than Jaden and Sanristil and Coleman. We need to see Newton take that next step, and it'd be nice to see Senate and McCaffrey play well.
Starting point is 00:24:54 Tommy, I had Sean Springs on the show. He's like the third person that's told me, and we know that the day. team like this player. Jordan McGee is, he loves Trey Amos, first of all. He thinks Trey Amos is a star in the making of corner. But man, people have been talking
Starting point is 00:25:09 up Jordan McGee since last year, the linebacker from Temple. So he's playing behind Bobby Wagner, but he'll certainly get some opportunities. So specific to Jorge mentioning Wagner, maybe McGee is good depth there. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:25:25 But I get what you're saying. Yeah. One more email that I was reading before the show. This from John H. John H writes, you're continually pounding the pavement about how Jaden can elevate the receivers around him. I agree. I'm not sure, though, you've fully articulated how that works and how it can make this lack of practice separation a non-issue.
Starting point is 00:25:52 In practice, the defense knows this guy is going to stick to the script. In regular season games, he won't. defenses will be constantly worried. He'll rip off a 20-yard run. Defensive coordinators will tell their squads, bottle up Daniels, and you'll have done your job. The entire defense is constantly worried about him, and by that virtue, he sets everyone else free. I believe you've misquoted DQ a few times by calling it the second part of the play. I think DQ calls it the second play. The threat of the second play makes the first play more viable.
Starting point is 00:26:24 If he gets to the second play, God's speed. John, you did a great job of articulating how Jaden elevates the team and how we don't see it until the real games are played. I know I've talked about certainly some of this. Ben and I were talking about it the other day before the preseason game against Cincinnati, and I said, look, you're not going to see Jaden's full effect on the players around him because he's going to be in and out. And more importantly, everything he does. that elevates the players around him, or a lot of it, is when he goes off script.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And you don't see that in practice or, you know, scripted periods. But that was well put, John H. And yes, if he gets to, as DQ calls it the second play, Godspeed, as we saw last year, that is the son, Tommy. He's the son. Yes. Yes, he is. Yep.
Starting point is 00:27:29 And everything revolves around him. Yeah. Let me ask you a question. Ask me a question. Do you think, I know we got to go to a break here soon, do you think that, look, there's always a layer of pressure among people like Dan Quinn and Adam Peters to succeed, period. Every general manager and coach deals with that layer of pressure.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Do you think they feel an extra layer of pressure where they, maybe they say it to themselves privately? We better not screw this up because of Jane Daniel. You know, this time. The more than maybe if another quarterback was there, like if they were doing the normal, rebuild transgression. Right. You know, but that didn't happen. They jumped like 25 steps ahead with Jane Daniels.
Starting point is 00:28:34 And now they have this opportunity to have it with me. I mean, every decision would be. You can't deal with success. You don't want the pressure. You don't want any expectations. Lower that bar for me, please. I can clear that one. No, my point is, I mean, everything would be,
Starting point is 00:28:56 How does this help Jaden Daniels? Everything. It's the pressure they all want, though. It is the right kind of pressure because here's the other part of it. The perception of him is reality. If the perception wasn't reality, that would be a big problem for them. You know, I also think about the conversation that we had this time last year. And I said that, you know, Adam Peters is in a spot as a new general manager that is very unique in that he's got the number two pick in the draft.
Starting point is 00:29:36 And there appears to be options of really good quarterbacks in one of the best quarterback drafts. And we're going to know at the end of year one if the signs are there that he got the pick right or wrong. I mean, it takes a while to know for sure. But because he was going to play, Jaden, we were going to have a sense as to whether or not he got it right or wrong. And he was going to be judged immediately on that end, the fact that he also had to hire a coach in his first year as a GM. And look, year one couldn't have gone any better.
Starting point is 00:30:23 But it does bring, you know, success, you know, certainly brings on more expectations and, you know, pressure. But would you, I mean, like, the way you ask that question, it seems to me that you would have preferred as the general manager to come in, have a shit show of a roster, which it was, have the 12th pick in the first round, and have the opportunity with some breathing room over three years to kind of build it up a little bit and then face some pressure. Well, no, you're misreading it. I didn't mean it to be a negative thing.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Okay. I just be, and I don't think they're obsessed with it, but there are moments when you're alone with your thoughts, I think, and you have to think, well, I better not screw this up. I think, let me compare it to when you and me started doing the radio show together, and you wanted to do a successful radio show. But then when you saw how talented I was, you probably said to yourself,
Starting point is 00:31:29 boy, I better not screw this up. I remember talking to everybody. I remember talking to Chuck and was Chuck the program director or was CJ? I can't remember. No. Dennis. Dennis.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Frosty was. Yeah. So, yeah, I was, I mean, once they put you on the show, I was like, oh, Jesus, I would have loved to have had somebody much worse than I would have, you know. No, I know what you're saying. I bet you certainly in private moments, you know, they didn't just get a quarterback with promise. They got a quarterback who in year two is an MVP candidate.
Starting point is 00:32:15 And therefore, the expectation when you have an MVP candidate at quarterback is that you better win. a lot. And now, and now, like the depth of the roster is not going to be an excuse if they don't get back to the postseason and win a playoff game or two again. Yeah. Of course, what can always be an excuse is just, you know, the bad luck of somebody getting hurt. And the person that you don't want to get hurt is old Jaden Daniels, who by the way came in 21 on the top 100 list and 24 on this ESPN top 100 list. The quarterbacks in front of them on the players list include Jalen Hertz. Man, I just would never, and I love Jalen Hertz. I would never take Jalen Hertz over Jaden Daniels. Here's a question that somebody asked me,
Starting point is 00:33:17 today or maybe he was asking me, he thought Jalen Hertz was better than Jaden Daniels. And I said, Jalen Hertz on this team last year, it's eight or nine wins, not 12. To me, that rings true. That's my opinion. And that's why, I mean, Jaden is just a much bigger difference maker. Jalen needs the great team around him. I think he's a clutch player. I agree.
Starting point is 00:33:45 But I don't think this team. goes 12 and 5 into the NFC championship game with Jalen Hertz a quarterback last year? No, I don't think so either. All right. I did a radio hit this morning for my old producer on radio Denton Days show on the BetQL Network. And one of the hosts said, so what's the best case for Washington this year?
Starting point is 00:41:34 And I just said, the Super Bowl, representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. I believe that wholeheartedly. What's your answer to the question? I think the only thing that stands in their way besides injury, I think it's the same thing that stood in their way last year, the Philadelphia Eagles. There could be other teams that will stand in the way. I just, the best case, it's really simple.
Starting point is 00:42:10 When you have, and I believe this to be true, I think others believe it to be true. You have the best quarterback in the conference, and you won 12 last year in his rookie season and got to the NFC title game winning two road playoff games. With a new coaching staff? You absolutely.
Starting point is 00:42:29 You've upgraded the offensive line. You've added another weapon. Defensively, there's some belief that they've gotten better personnel-wise. Absolutely the Super Bowl is the best case scenario. I agree with you. I think so. I mean, they've got a big hurdle, I think, to overcome with, I think, Philadelphia. I think there's going to be a favorite going in and repeat.
Starting point is 00:42:55 But, yeah, I agree with you. I mean, that is the best case scenario. I think they're capable of that. What was a more exciting build-up to a season for you? Was it 2004 Gibbs' return, or was it 2013 year two of RG3? I would say Gibbs' return because year two, we had already seen, you know, the red flags pop up. We were already skeptical of the all-end for week one campaign going into the 2013 season. The bloom was off the rose in a lot of ways.
Starting point is 00:43:46 But with Gibbs, it was a resurrection. It was like something out of the Bible. God, it was by far and away Snyder's best move and the only really good move. Yes. During his ownership tenure. Yeah, I mean, I think that 2013, yes, people like us closer to what was going on
Starting point is 00:44:11 we knew that not all was well in Joyville after 2012. And, you know, I'm not saying that fans didn't start to get, you know, irritated by the all-in for week one and the, you know, the hashtag festival. But I think the bigger issue was that he was coming off a serious knee injury. And would he be the same player, especially early in the season? But there was a lot of hype going into that opener. against the Eagles. I can tell you this, that Gibbs opener against Tampa Bay when Clinton Portis ripped off that long touchdown run, it was like, we're back. We are back. And we
Starting point is 00:44:54 weren't in 2004. But yeah, I think that the expectations for winning haven't been what they are right now since 2000. I think coming off a division title, a playoff win, adding Dion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Mark Carrier, Jeff George. But there was a lot of excitement. And odds-wise, I've mentioned this many times, that's the best odds to win the Super Bowl going into a season that Washington had had since 92 when they were the defending champs. And this year will be the best odds to win the Super Bowl that they've had since 2000.
Starting point is 00:45:39 They were the second pick behind the Rams to win the Super Bowl in 2000 per pro football references odds heading into that season. This year they're like sixth or seventh. Of course, they haven't even been in the top 20 for basically the last, you know, most of the last two decades. You made me aware of something, and I want you to kind of set it up. I have read through the part that involves Dan Quinn. you pointed to something before we started to record the show, and I am going to go back and read this entire story.
Starting point is 00:46:15 But tell everybody about the story written by Elise Devlin at The Athletic, where Jay Glazer, the Fox Sports NFL insider, has become a big support system for athletes and coaches who have suffered from depression. Well, I've always been kind of interested in Jake Glazer's career for a number of reasons. And I'll get to that in a moment. But following it more closely, I know that he wrote a book at the last year or so about suffering from depression. He calls it the gray, waking up with the gray and feeling like, you know, like your body. body is turning on you, you don't feel like getting out of bed, you know, basically depression, severe depression. And apparently he has dealt with it on and off, you know, throughout his entire life.
Starting point is 00:47:23 And so he basically found a way to cope with it by talking and sharing, you know, what he was going through with friends close to him. and so he wrote this book and started this podcast and sort of became this national figure about depression and also as part of it you know he's they've met uh he's met a lot of big athletes over the years and i guess from the uh from some kind of tv program uh he met michael feldt the olympic athlete the greatest Olympic athlete of all time, who also suffered from severe depression.
Starting point is 00:48:06 And the two of them started talking to each other and, you know, sharing their struggles to help each other. And, you know, they came up with this idea of building this network of people in similar positions, you know, high-pressure, high-profile positions in sports and entertainment, I guess, too, who have the same struggles and to offer a network of support,
Starting point is 00:48:37 a telephone network, and I guess, you know, a social media network of support. And it's grown to be tremendous. It includes Sean McVeigh. Sean McVey is very close to Jay Glazer, because Sean McVey has gone through his struggles of depression.
Starting point is 00:49:03 You know, Andrew Whitworth, the former offensive tackle, UFC, Hall famer, Mark Kerr, and the Rock, Wayne Johnson,
Starting point is 00:49:14 is all part of this circle of, of, you know, of support, and Dan Quinn. Yeah. There's in the story of the athletic, It talks about how Jake Laser and his support group basically, you know, came to Dan Quin's aide when he was really suffering from self-doubt and personal struggles after he got fired in Seattle.
Starting point is 00:49:52 In Atlanta, as the head coach. In Atlanta. Yeah, I'll read. because it's a short section about Dan Quinn, but this was interesting. It reads as follows. Before Dan Quinn returned to the NFL's head coach of the Washington commanders, he had been fired by the Atlanta Falcons during the 2020 season. From Quinn, quote, I went from somebody that was trying to give the encouragement, and then all of the sudden in 2020, I'm the one that needed it, closed quote. Within 48 hours of him being fired, Glazer told, Quinn that he needed him to hop on a Zoom call.
Starting point is 00:50:31 Secretly, Glazer had coordinated for 50 of Quinn's former players, coaches, and friends, to be on the call. The Zoom call lasted for over an hour as everyone took turns sharing how Quinn impacted their lives. Quinn said, quote, it was overwhelmingly, it was overwhelming, honestly. Glazer said he cried his eyes out. After that day, Quinn continued to lean on Glazer. I didn't mean that he had to fix it, Quinn said. He's like, just call me, and so I did.
Starting point is 00:51:08 It just helped having somebody to talk to on a random Tuesday at 11 in the morning, especially when for the last 25 years of my life, I knew exactly what I was doing that day at 11 o'clock, and then all of a sudden didn't. those calls affected Quinn so much that he eventually started reaching out to other fired coaches because he knew how much it meant to him. Now, I read that section, Tommy. What that section doesn't actually say is whether or not Quinn suffered from some level of depression.
Starting point is 00:51:41 So I don't know. No, it does not say that. Right. It does not say that. But that's what this group deals with. Yeah. I mean, that's what Jake Laser lives with all the time. It's what Michael Phelps lives with all the time.
Starting point is 00:51:56 And it's a fascinating story. Look, I have tremendous admiration for Jake Laser and what he's accomplished in his life. He was just some Yahoo New York sports reporter. Okay? And he's built his career into, like, being, you know, a fixture on the Fox Sunday NFL sports group. He was an actor in that HBO series about football players.
Starting point is 00:52:31 I forget what it was called. He does commercials for sponsors and stuff. That's the universe that 99.9% of the people who also call themselves sports reporters don't live in. okay he lives in a different universe but he is a sports reporter yeah and my my issue with let me just point out in addition to all that he's a tremendous MMA fighter and trained mixed martial arts fighter I didn't know that I knew that he was he he's always like you know he's ripped I know that always no he he he he has I think he has his own gym uh and a lot of NFL players work out with him.
Starting point is 00:53:23 He trains like linemen and NFL players, and he trains mixed martial artists. So he's got that whole thing going on for him. So it's just a tremendous career. All that said, because he is a sports reporter, he gets, like, he showed a video the other day of him at the Chicago Bears facility. Well, he was in the wait room,
Starting point is 00:53:49 working out. I can guarantee you that I can go, you know, to over to commanders, and there's no way they're letting me in their wait room to work out or any other team, you know? Right. So, but I don't know. I think if you walked in there and, you know, you asked Sean, can I go down and just use the wait room while we're waiting for the press conference to start? I mean, why not? You're Tom Laverro. Just for laughs. He, he just for laughs, he would, maybe, you know. But, uh, But here's my issue with all this, this close relationship. And Glazer has been, like Michael, Michael Strayhan and him are best friends. Right.
Starting point is 00:54:31 I mean, they used to, when Glazer covered the Giants as a normal sports reporter, he was best friends with Strait. And they used to drive to the stadium together. So this is unheard of. Right. Here's the issue. if Jay Glazer has to report something really bad on Sean McVeigh, will he do that? Or if he knows something that would be a news item about somebody he's close to in this circle.
Starting point is 00:55:03 Yeah, I don't know. Would he do that? I mean, that's the issue. But you know what? He's a TV reporter. But he is an insider. His job is to break news, I guess. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:18 Yeah. I hear you. Don't diminish it because he's a TV guy. I mean, they're supposed to, look, the standards are disappearing, you know. So, I mean, I know I'm like Don Quixote here pushing up against the windmill. Yeah. And again, let me make it clear. I have tremendous admiration for him and what he's accomplished.
Starting point is 00:55:37 Right. Tremend. No. But both things. If I'm a fan, I don't want to have to worry that I have to trust. the guy that's giving me information to hide information for his friends
Starting point is 00:55:52 right um you know what is just kind of interesting about this uh all of this is that it wasn't that long ago that this was the last area of society that couldn't talk about
Starting point is 00:56:12 mental health issues meaning athletes in particular. I mean, you may say that there were other, you know, areas of society, other industries, et cetera. But it was a major sign of weakness to talk about mental health. And I think I could be wrong about this. I think Kevin Love was the first one to really say, I've got issues. He had panic attack disorder, depression. he was leaving the bench during games because he was just really a wreck.
Starting point is 00:56:50 And I think that if my memory serves me correctly, and I was looking this up while you were talking, and I can't find it specifically. But I remember that DeMar de Rosen came out and talked about his struggles with depression and love basically helped him immensely. This wasn't something that got discussed in the world of, sports 10 years ago, right? Look, no, it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:57:17 And, you know, it's a good thing that it is now. Yeah, definitely. Very good thing that it is because, you know, people go, people should not go through mental health struggles, you know, feeling like they're alone. And that's the worst way to go through. Oh, it's dangerous. Yes. I'm just, I've just pulled up the Kevin Love thing.
Starting point is 00:57:41 Kevin Love, in March of 2018, in response to DeRosin's public discussion of his struggles with depression, Love revealed that he had been seeing a therapist for several months following a panic attack during a game in November 2017. And then he wrote a first person story. Everyone is going through something in the Players Tribune. So I guess it was actually Tamar DeRosen. You know, there was a really good, I think it was Netflix. Could have been Hulu, could have been something else. On Marty Fish, who was a tennis pro for many years, he's actually a great golfer too,
Starting point is 00:58:18 but he was ranked in the top 10 for many years. He struggled massively with anxiety, depression. And that story, like, he would be on his way to face Roger Federer in a quarterfinal match at Madison Square Garden. And he had a panic attack and had anxiety and basically had to, you know, default. before the match. I mean, it was that bad, but it's a really interesting story.
Starting point is 00:58:46 It was very well done. But yeah, I mean, interesting that Quinn's in this story, but also, you're right. Jay Glazer is an interesting figure, for sure. Yes. He really is. All right. And, you know, he's had a remarkable life.
Starting point is 00:59:03 I mean, the whole mixed martial arts, I mean, he is a physical beast. Yeah. You know? Yeah. I mean, not quite you, but on his way. No, well, you know, it's not fair to measure them like that. Let's talk about what I've watched three episodes of,
Starting point is 00:59:21 and you've watched two of, which is this Netflix documentary on America's team. We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors. So guys, if you're like me and you've basically been buying and wearing this same type of underwear for years, in my case, boxer briefs, same brand, same type for a long time, well, not anymore
Starting point is 01:01:59 for me. I want to tell you about skims for men, something I've discovered recently, the softest underwear. I've ever worn. I got a few pairs of the five-inch boxer briefs so comfortable. No matter what you're doing from sitting in a chair in your office to working out, they are so comfortable. They don't bunch up. They were made to recover from every stretch. The fabric is cool to the touch and it just seems to mold to your body and never loses its shape. This is so different from the synthetic feeling I used to get from what I used to wear. Skims is made with an undeniable soft midweight cotton that allows you to breathe.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Skims for men. It comes in multiple colors, multiple sizes. Shop skims men's at skims.com. Let them know I sent you. After you place your order, select podcast in the survey and select my show in the drop-down menu that follows. All right, Tommy, tell us about Shellies. Well, look, you've got the Labor Day weekend coming up at the end of this week.
Starting point is 01:03:13 You know, it's a holiday weekend. You may have visitors coming to town, or you may have family members who are saying, hey, it's supposed to be a nice day out, nice weekend, good weather. Let's go down in the D.C. and go see some of the Smithsonian or visit some of the monuments. You know, if that happens, I'm going to give you Tommy's window of fun to take along with you. and that window of fun is Shelly's back room. Yeah, this is always about fun. Yes, this is the plan.
Starting point is 01:03:44 When you're down there, you know, let's say you get off the metro of the Smithsonian, you're walking around a little bit, you know, you put in your 15, 20 minutes in the air and State Museum, and then they want to go to the Museum of American Indians or, you know, natural history. You say, look, I'm not feeling too good. I'm going to go get something to eat. And you guys text me and let me know if you're ready to leave. I'm really doing it. Tell everybody how that works out for you.
Starting point is 01:04:14 Okay. Then you walk a couple blocks over to 1331 F Street Northwest, and you hit Shelley's backroom. Shelly's back room is the oasis for those holiday weekends. The place to go or refuge for beleaguered family members who would rather be any place, but looking at artwork in the National Gallery of Art. Okay. Shelley's Backroom, you can find out more if you go to shelley's backroom.
Starting point is 01:04:43 com. So you've watched some of America's team, The Gambler and His Cowboys on Netflix? Yes, I have. So your reaction? I've watched three episodes. What's your reaction so far? Well, I can't say I find it compelling,
Starting point is 01:05:04 but I find it interesting. The first episode, all the background about the sale of the team and Jerry Jones. And remember, he's dramatizing everything. You know, he's inflating the dramatic impact of everything. You have to consider everything that comes out of his mouth like that. Could he's such a showman?
Starting point is 01:05:26 But I was really interested in how the business transaction went when he took over the team. And the reason, action to the firing of Tom Landry. You know, I was also interested in, you know, the whole Herschel Walker trade of how that came about. And Troy Aikman and his role as a leader, becoming a leader on this team. So those are the things that I've been interested in.
Starting point is 01:05:56 I'm certainly looking forward to the good stuff about, you know, the White House, so to speak. I've got you to yet. Yeah, I think it's really good. I think that I do remember, not specific details, but I do remember how much Cowboys fans hated the fact that ownership was changing and Tom Landry was on his way out. I mean, for those not old enough or old enough,
Starting point is 01:06:28 but not, you know, remembering the specifics, I mean, this was devastating to Cowboys fans that Landry was getting run. And Jerry did it in such a cold, callous, half-assed way. They referred to the whole press conferences like the Saturday night massacre, you know, harkening back to Watergate days. But he really, I think the interesting part of that to me was how clueless Jerry Jones was about sort of the cowboy fan base, the history, Tom Landry's part in that history,
Starting point is 01:07:13 Tech Schram, Gil Brandt, everybody. Like, he just didn't get it. And maybe it was better not to get it because he needed to make those changes. He made the right changes. But don't you think that he came off as, like completely blown away that the reaction was what it was? Yeah, well, I think in Jerry's world, there is no other universe, but Jerry's world.
Starting point is 01:07:44 You know, that's it. That's the only planet in the universe. So I think most times he's kind of surprised by reactions, dramatic reactions, one way or the other that would differ from his. So that doesn't surprise me that he was, he was, he was, he seemed clueless about it because it, you know, it wasn't about him until the decision was made. Then he got criticized and it was about him. But I think it's an interesting series. It's the same guys who made the last dance, the Jordan documentary. And, you know, there's a lot of documentaries now are just love letters. The Jordan documentary wasn't quite that, you know, so I have, I have, I have.
Starting point is 01:08:27 I would recommend this moving forward. I'm looking forward to looking at the third episode. Yeah, I mean, look, I'm not going to spill the beans on anything here, but I actually find Jerry Jones through these first three episodes to be a much more compelling figure than I've ever thought of him as. I remember when he got into the Hall of Fame, I'm like, really? And I understand from a business standpoint what he, you know, how he changed the NFL and what,
Starting point is 01:08:56 what revenues, you know, did after he basically figured out how to sell every part of the NFL visa vis-a-vis sponsorships. But this is a guy that's been a hustler his whole life. I mean, he is a salesman, but used car style. He grew up, you know, with his father owning a grocery store. He and the family lived on top of that grocery store. The very, very blue-collar upbringing. he was involved, like the daughter at one point says, we never really knew what dad did. When we were asked what our father's occupation was, we just always wrote down or said self-employed because he was a serial entrepreneur.
Starting point is 01:09:42 He got involved in so many different businesses. And I don't know if you've gotten to this part yet, but the part about him almost buying the chargers with the backing of Jimmy Hoffa in the mafia and his father talked him out of it because he said, you can't go into business with these people. And he was devastated. But the bottom line is he basically, in massive debt, you know, 50 million plus hit a gusher.
Starting point is 01:10:11 You know, they tried one more oil well, and they put the thing down there, and it made $100 million. And he was then in position to buy the Cowboys, which were always, or buying a football team was his lifelong dream because he played football on a national championship 1964 Arkansas team with Jimmy Johnson. Interesting character for sure. I think there's a lot more about him that I'm learning that I didn't know that is that's interesting.
Starting point is 01:10:44 He is a salesman, and you're right, he's all about Jera. But man, what a life he has lived. Absolutely. One last news item before we leave. Yeah. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey engaged. Wow. My God, the number of people watching the Chiefs games this year. Imagine the Chiefs Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. They are projecting, you know, NFL people are projecting, that that may be the most watched regular season game in NFL history.
Starting point is 01:11:18 And by the way, Redskins or Washington Chiefs on Monday Night Football will be pretty good too. One last thing, though, real quickly, for Redskin fans, especially Redskin fans of the 91 team, there is a lot about the Cowboys ending Washington's perfect season in 91 at RFK Stadium, 11 and 0 Washington.
