Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. The show's presenting sponsor is always. Window Nation. If you need new windows, call them. 86690 Nation is the number. You can also go to windownation.com. Tommy, this is from Lynn to open up the show. Lynn writes, Kevin and Tom, my husband and I are frequent listeners and big fans. of the show. For what it's worth, you both together or by yourselves are just as entertaining, if not more so, when the topic is something other than sports, unless you're making fun of soccer, L.O.L. Bachelor parties, movies, TV shows, pinup girls from the 50s, and now Kevin's stepbrother wrote a movie that got made, and Tom now finally seems willing to send Kevin, his scripts. It never gets old between you two. Keep up the good work.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Well, thank you, Lynn, for that. That was very nice. We even talked about pin-up girls from the 50s in a while. I don't think. And it's not just pin-up girls from the 50s. I think we've hit pretty much every decade of pin-up girls.
Starting point is 00:01:25 When do you think the pin-up thing started? In the 30s or 40s? I think it's definitely It definitely was highlighted during World War II. Right. The soldiers of Betty pinups of Betty Grable and other pinups. It may have been a big thing before that, I'm sure. You know, there were magazines, glamour magazines, pinup magazines.
Starting point is 00:01:50 There was a Starlet named Gene Harlow back in the 30s, who was from Marilyn Monroe of her time. So it probably goes back almost 100 years. The term pinup was first officially used in a 1941 life magazine feature on actress Dorothy Lamour. However, the concept traces back to late 19th century burlesque and Gibson Girl illustrations. But during World War II, the U.S. military heavily circulated and sanctioned these images to raise the spirits of homesick soldiers. Betty Grable, famous for her iconic 1943 yellow bathing suit
Starting point is 00:02:36 poster, was the most requested by World War II troops. So there you go. You pretty much got it right for the most part. Look at you.
Starting point is 00:02:50 You know what might be the most famous pin-up? People say Farrah Fawcett and they're probably right. But the iconic one. Marilyn Monroe. Raquel Welch.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Okay. In 10,000 BC, the movie, because that's the poster, I think, that Andy Dufrain had on his wall. Ah, yeah. The Shawshank Redemption to cover up the tunnel he was he built.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Are you sure? Are you sure it was Raquel Welch? By the way, that's kind of the first and Raquel Welch is really 60s and 70s, right? 60s, 60s mostly. Let me just say, pin up poster
Starting point is 00:03:40 Andy Dufrein. Let's see if you're right about that. Rita Hayworth, you're wrong. It was Rita Hayworth. Really? Yeah. I thought for sure it was Raquel Welch. No, I kind of remember it being Rita Hayworth
Starting point is 00:03:54 now that I just read it. Red smuggles into the prison. A pin-up girl. A pin-up of Rita Hayworth, and he leaves it on the bed for his good friend Andy Dufrein. I think, you know, I don't remember pin-up being the term for Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Teague's, you know, the 70s pin-up girl. I mean, the first true sex symbol that I remember is Farah Fawcett. And I had the Cheryl Teague's Fishnet SwimSuit poster. I had that one. But Farah Fawcett was really the first, and she did, you know, those commercials with,
Starting point is 00:04:44 it was Noxema, right? Wasn't it Noxema? The aftershave? I think so, yeah. Take it off, take it all off. Yeah, and then she, She became part of Charlie's Angels, which was, you know, a phenomenal show with Jacqueline Smith and Kate Jackson. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:01 It was a phenomenal show. Oh, it wasn't. You're right. It wasn't a phenomenal show. But it was a popular show because the three of them. I actually really liked Jacqueline Smith and Kate Jackson. I thought they were much better on that show than Farah Fawcett was. I remember Kate Jackson was in a show before that called The Rookies.
Starting point is 00:05:23 It was a cop show. She was the wife of one of the cops. And one of the cops was George Sanford Brown. I know exactly who you're talking about, the black guy. Yes. Yeah. Who was in Roots. He was in Roots. Yes, he was. He was also in...
Starting point is 00:05:41 So I remember Kate Jackson from being in that show, the rookies. He was also in, tell me if I'm right about this, it may be a different actor and I may have him confused with somebody else. Was he in the original longest yard? with Bert Reynolds? I don't think. Where he played the gay, where he played the gay prisoner? You know what?
Starting point is 00:06:03 That's a good call. Well, I don't know if it's a good call or not. I'm going to check right now. No, that wasn't the longest yard. That was stir crazy. Oh, it was stir crazy. That's what it was. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:16 With Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Exactly. Yeah. Good call. Yes. Good pull. Stur crazy. That's right.
Starting point is 00:06:23 We bet. We bet. We bad. And of course, that was the follow-up to Silver Streak, which they did together, Prior, and Gene Wilder. Do you know that there wasn't something that long ago that sort of popped up in my, you know, social media timeline with Richard Pryor? Because I will occasionally watch a bunch of Richard Pryor videos. I still consider Richard Pryor to be the goat. I think he's the funniest guy. He's the top comedian of all. He's my all-time favorite. He apparently was essentially completely drugged out during the filming of Stir Crazy.
Starting point is 00:07:06 And there are interviews with him after the movie is done where he just shreds the movie, just kills it as a terrible movie. But it just talks about how he got paid and that's all that mattered. And he was stoned in almost every, in high, out of his mind in almost every interview. Because Stur Crazy is early 80s. You know, it's probably... But I thought Sturr Crazy was a good movie.
Starting point is 00:07:38 That was a funny movie, yes. When Gene Wilder gets on the bull, you know, in the warden's office, he's like, and he got it up to whatever number it was, I don't know if it was 10 or 5 or whatever. Nobody's ever gotten it up to 5. Here's the cast. Yes, George. Stanford Brown. That's a good call.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Barry Corbyn was the warden. Right, and Craig T. Nelson was his deputy. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. That was a fun movie. Richard Pryor was great in that movie, but he thought in the moment afterwards that it was a terrible movie.
Starting point is 00:08:18 By the way, the budget for that movie was $10 million. The box office number 101 million came out. December 12th, 1980. And I think Sidney Pottier directed it. Really? Hold on. I'll check on that. I think so. Directed by Sidney Portier. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Wow. All right then. Thank you for that, Lynn. Oh, yes. The reason I read this wasn't for what we just talked about. It's because I did talk about the other day that my stepbrother wrote a movie that got made. He actually went out and funded it and raised the money for it. It's called Time of Death. It's out right now
Starting point is 00:09:04 on Apple, on Paramount, on Amazon. I think it's in a few theaters. I don't know if any of the theaters are around here. And Tom talked about, well, how am I going to get my movies made? He's complained about that for years. And Lynn remembered that I've asked, look, I can't help you. But I've asked to see his...
Starting point is 00:09:31 You're going to be my money guy. I'm not going to be your money guy. I don't have money to invest in a movie. It's like investing in a... It's like investing in a restaurant. I wouldn't... I mean... You're going to be my money guy.
Starting point is 00:09:44 So Tommy did send me a script. Can I just tell you something? I'm so impressed. And of course I didn't read the entire script. It would have taken it. me hours to read the entire script. But I'm really impressed that, because this isn't
Starting point is 00:10:02 the only one you've done, right? Right, I've done another one. I mean, that is a lot of work. It's a shitload of creativity. I mean, Tommy's got every scene, he's got all of the dialogue. I'm not going to
Starting point is 00:10:17 talk about what it is, obviously, unless you wanted to talk about what it is. But I just, I'm blown away when I see things like this from people because it's unbelievable effort. How long did it take you to write that script? That screenplay. I wrote both of them during COVID when we had no place to go and nothing to do. Well, we were doing podcasts. Yes, we were. Other than that, we were basically landlocked. Nobody was going out. Well, you were taking walks. I was coming to work. Not everybody was.
Starting point is 00:10:54 But yes. You were catching up with old friends. I wrote the other ones first, the queen of baseball. It's the one I didn't send you. Okay. And when I finished it, I had the momentum going. So I just jumped right into this other one. I've been wanting to write for years.
Starting point is 00:11:15 All right. So just what's the status of this? Like, what did you do with it? It's limbo. It's nowhere. I've tried to pitch it. I can't get an agent to get interested. Look, I don't think it's because it's bad.
Starting point is 00:11:28 There's lots of reasons why films don't get made in Hollywood. I had a producer tell me for the queen of baseball, which is like the early 20th century, it's very hard to get period pieces made, you know? Right. So, I mean, why is that? Because there's a big expense? Big expense. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:55 With period pieces. Right. And, you know, look, I see garbage on the screen all the time. Right. And I'm not kidding myself. I know my movie, my stuff is better than what I just saw. So, I mean, I'm not fooling myself or wasting my time. I just haven't found the right guy and the right opportunity.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Now, one way to do it these days is to get an actor or actress interested in your project. Right. To attach to so they can attach themselves to it, and then everything else seems to come around. So I've tried to figure out ways to do that, but these people are like, they're better protected than government officials. You can't get to them. Let me just say this. I haven't read the entire screenplay, but you got a much better shot with this than you do with your, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:00 your burgeoning singing career. I would put that on hold and focus more on screenplays. I think I've told you this story before. And I know I haven't told this story on my own. So if I told this story, it was with you on the podcast. but it does have something to do with how a movie got made, and there's a lot of, you know, circumstance, luck, right place, right time.
Starting point is 00:13:28 But going back to the pandemic 2020, one of the, you know, real blessings for me and a lot of friends of mine is that our golf course opened up pretty quickly. And I don't know, you probably wouldn't remember this because you don't like golf, But one of the real, you know, lifesavers during that first year is every week there were about 30 of us. And we put together, because our golf course was open, we put together a Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:14:03 It was actually a Tuesday game for a while. Then it was a Wednesday game. And it was like we split the teams into 15 and 15. And, you know, we went out in groups. And it was a whole, you know, afternoon, turned into an evening, hanging out, drinking, smoking cigars. the whole thing. And it was really, really beneficial to have that as an outlet during the pandemic in the spring and early summer of 2020. Well, not every golf course was open. A lot of golf courses were open, but not a lot of golf courses were open. And the place that I am a member at Columbia
Starting point is 00:14:41 Country Club in Chevy Chase is a course that has a lot of, it's a caddy, It has a real caddy program, and they encourage you to take caddies out when you go out and play. Not every place is like that, but a lot of places in big markets have, you know, big cities have places where, you know, you've got caddies. And the whole caddy thing is like this kind of cult. Like they know each other. They know all the places. And during the pandemic, there were caddies that came down from other places that were closed
Starting point is 00:15:16 and caddied at Columbia during the pandemic. It's a long way to get to this one day I'm playing, and I'm like, we're on like the fifth hole, and, you know, we're betting. There's typically some wagering going on on the golf course. And I think one of my friends that I was playing with that day said, you know, from where you were on the fairway, it's like, you know, I'll give you, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:43 I'll give you a three to one odds that you can't make par, something like that. And so I said, you know, make it four to one and I'll take the bet. And so he said, fine. And with that, the guy that was caddying for us that day, who we had never had before and didn't know. And by the way, a lot of the caddies that we have become friends, you know, good friends. But this guy was somebody new.
Starting point is 00:16:08 And he looked at me and he said, Kevin, don't take four to one. You need five or six to one. and I looked at him and I said, I know you. He goes, what took you so long? And it was this guy, Brandon Lang. Do you remember Brandon Lang? He used to come on, he came on our show.
Starting point is 00:16:34 He came, we went on Andy and Steve's show for several years as a handicapper, as a sports handicapper. You remember him, right? Yes. So he goes, yeah, it's me. Like, what are you doing? Cattying. He goes, I caddy at a lot of different places.
Starting point is 00:16:56 I'm down from, believe it or not, where he was a caddy was Shinnecock Hills, where the U.S. Open is being played this weekend. It's underway right now. I'm looking at the leaderboard. Rory's three under and in the lead. Wow. And they were closed And a couple of the other places out in the Hamptons that he caddied at were closed.
Starting point is 00:17:21 And I said, well, why do you caddying? And he said, it's a business generator for me for my handicapping and tout business. And, you know, I didn't get into, you know, why he was caddying. I didn't care. We ended up having the best day. he was entertaining as hell. We connected. He did.
Starting point is 00:17:44 I remember he asked him. He said, why did you stop having me on your show? Because they put him on our show to begin with. And then after one year, I'm like, I don't really want him anymore. And they're like, okay, we'll give him to Andy and Steve. And the reason I didn't want him is because I understood that he didn't know anything more than what we knew. But that was another thing. And he asked me, why didn't you?
Starting point is 00:18:09 you stick with me because I thought it was really good. I remember you were excellent, but, you know, I know the game here. You know, he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And anyway, long story short, he gets to the story about how they made a movie about him. Right, two for the money. Two for the money. They made a movie about Brandon Lang, and the reason was he created this big sports advisory business.
Starting point is 00:18:39 what I call touts. They're not, you know, they don't take bets. You pay them to get their advice on who to bet on. Now, let me just tell you, when you're young and you're new at gambling and you're losing, you'll pay almost anything to somebody that tells you they got winners, okay? I went through that as a young person. Kevin, can you get to Western Union? You know, I got the Monday night lock winner.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Of course, you find out that, you know, they don't have any more the answers than you have. And so his claim to fame, and I may be a little bit off on this, but he hit on 23 straight Monday night football games before finally losing. And that's what created the business, Brandon Lang Sports, or whatever it was called. and those are big businesses, Tommy. People pay big money for picks. I don't know if they still do, but I would imagine they still do. I know they used to.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And anyway, he told this story about how the movie Two for the Money got made. By the way, Al Pacino starred as Brandon Lang. Matthew McConaughey was in the movie. Renee Russo, she's a key person in the remainder of the story that I'm going to tell. here in a moment was in the movie. And, you know, it was a big, it was a, you know, I don't know if it was a big movie, but it was a movie. And he was the one that pitched the movie and he pitched it to Renee Rousseau's husband,
Starting point is 00:20:20 who was a big time Hollywood director. I forget what his name is. On the golf course, and here's how it happened, according to Brandon Lang. Brandon told this story and he told it that day and then we ended up having, you know, we had a couple of other outings with him. Fun guy, great guy, great storyteller the whole nine yards. But he said that he was caddying at Riviera in Los Angeles and that René Russo's husband, who I can't remember his name, big director, that he was his caddy in a big money match. and they got to the 18th and this guy had like a 12-foot put
Starting point is 00:21:04 to basically win a ton of money against whomever it was he was playing against. And he looked at the putt and he said, I got that going about a foot right to left. And Brandon said, if you hit it a foot right to left, it's going off the green. It's actually a foot left to right.
Starting point is 00:21:23 So he lines up the put. He follows Brandon, his caddies, advice and he makes the put and he goes to tip him you know and he said i don't want any money from you i want you to give me an opportunity to pitch you 10 minutes on a movie he gave him the opportunity to pitch him on the movie he loved the idea and he made the movie about brandon lang two for the money and i'm going to guess that that was what tommy 2010 2005 maybe 2000. Yeah, somewhere around there.
Starting point is 00:22:01 I can look it up real quickly. You know, one of the reasons I really enjoyed that movie because it had one of my all-time favorite actors in it. Who? Armand Asante played the mob guy. Oh, yeah. Who he bet with and then beat him up for not coming through on his bet. 2005.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And directed by DJ Caruso, written by Dan Gil, René Russo, who's her husband? Her husband is Dan Gilroy. Dan Gilroy is the guy that wrote it. He didn't direct it. He wrote it, according to Wikipedia. And that's how that movie got made. So, I mean, yeah, it's, that was kind of lucky and right place, right time. And by the way, the right read on the putt.
Starting point is 00:22:55 He gave him the correct read on the put. Um, but I can, I can discuss the name of the script I gave you. Okay. I mean, it's registered with the Writers Guild of America. Uh-huh. No one can steal it or anything. Uh, it's called all my black friends, the adventure of the life of Sputnik Monroe.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Yeah. Who was a professional wrestler. And it's based on a true story. You know, when I, when I first opened it up and it was called All My Black Friends, I thought it was going to be like some. sort of comedy where you know how white people say well I've got a lot of black friends too
Starting point is 00:23:36 that's like a big line when you're having a race conversation or a racially tinged conversation well you know I've got black friends too just just know that that's my perspective that's where I'm coming from that's what I thought it was going to be something like that but it was nothing like that
Starting point is 00:23:53 and it was a period piece from the 50s 50s 60s 50s and 60. Yeah. Well, let's stay at it here.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Honestly, you know I would help you if I could help, if I could legitimately help you in any way, I don't know how I could help you. I don't know anybody in the movie business. I guess my stepbrother is technically in the movie business because he did get a movie made. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:25 So I can at least get... I'm expecting weekly reports on how the money raising is going. I'll send you a spreadsheet. Yeah, that's coming. The first one will be there on Monday. And if you have a hard time finding any entries, you know, names or amounts, you know, don't worry. When we find something, we'll put it in there.
Starting point is 00:24:49 But I have a feeling it could be empty for a while. That's okay. I'm a patient, man. How much money would, seriously, I don't even know. How much money do you need to make a movie? I don't know these days. I mean, do you have... I'm doing this at the wrong time.
Starting point is 00:25:05 The movie business is a disaster. Of course, because TV is the big deal. You know, and I mean, with AI and everything, it's hard to get movies, harder than ever to get a movie made. So I'm really swimming against the tide here. All right. Well, stay at it. I think it's...
Starting point is 00:25:29 I haven't read the whole, you know, screenplay. but I was truly impressed. I mean, I just kept scrolling down. I mean, how many pages are there? I think about 100. Yeah, it's crazy. Do you have a cast in mind? No.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Oh, come on. You've thought about who would play Sputnik Mitt Monroe. No? No, I have not. Let me tell you something, Kevin. Once I sell the script, You're done with it. I really don't care what they do with it.
Starting point is 00:26:05 Well, that's the thing, right, is that you hope that somebody will buy this script. And they pay for scripts all the time and movies don't even get made after they buy scripts. I mean, it would be nice for it to be made. But I just want the feeling of selling a movie script. Right. I know that, you know, Howard Gutman has written scripts for TV shows, and maybe even movies, right? He's done a lot of that, and you talk to him about that.
Starting point is 00:26:37 All right, I'll keep you posted on the money raise for this. Thank you. You're welcome. Let's get to some sports after these words from a few of our sponsors. I haven't seen the numbers yet, Tommy, for the parade today in New York, but I did watch
Starting point is 00:29:50 some of it or I had it on in my studio during the radio show this morning. I'm sure we're going to see, you know, I think we're going to see numbers in the millions. perhaps, right? It's going to be more than a million people. It certainly looked like that. I have not seen an estimate for it. But I was thinking about, man, you know, it's been a while since we've had a parade in this town. Uh, 2019, when the Nats won the World Series. Now, if somebody calls me up and says that, you know, the women's ice hockey team in town won a title, I apologize, I guess. Uh, but, in terms of the four major pro sports teams, we haven't had a parade since the 2019 Nats.
Starting point is 00:30:38 And by the way, back-to-back years of a parade with the 2018 caps and the 2019 Nats. And prior to that, we had to go all the way back to 1991 for a parade for any of our professional sports teams. Who's the next team in town to have a parade? Have you ever been? Did you make it to any of those parades? Yeah, I did. I did shows from both of them. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Yeah. Not, I, I mean. What about when you were a fan? Never went to any of the parades. Not a big, you know, even as a young person, not a big go where there are thousands of people and crowds. Now, I say that, and I was a regular on the mall for July. fly forth with friends. But no.
Starting point is 00:31:36 You know what? Wait, wait a minute. Did I get on a bus with a friend of mine when the bullets won, I mean, we weren't driving. The bullets won the title in 78?
Starting point is 00:31:49 I don't think I did. No, I don't think I've ever been to a parade. I don't think so. Are there any estimates on the crowd size? I'm looking through it right now. I don't see any estimates. I haven't seen any yet.
Starting point is 00:32:01 You know, in 1986, Mets. The Mets won the World Series. I took a train up from Baltimore that morning of the parade to be there for... I wasn't there for any of the games.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I was a fan then. But I showed up for the parade, and that was pretty cool. That was pretty wild. Yeah. I'm looking through social media right now. I just see people saying, are we in the millions yet?
Starting point is 00:32:30 I mean, put it this way. The New York PD police commissioner said that the NYPD will have more than 10,000 officers in lower Manhattan. The Giants Parade in 2012 had about a million people, according to reports. So I would imagine this one's going to be bigger. Yeah, I would think so. What's the next parade in D.C.? The commanders. Really?
Starting point is 00:33:07 I mean, it is the sport out of the four that is the most unpredictable. You know, where you get, and I'm not saying that they'd be the biggest surprise, because I think they're going to be a good team for several years to come when Jaden Daniels is healthy and playing. But it is the sport where things turn around the fastest. Hockey is one of those things where, you know, it's always difficult because if you get in, you've got a chance. Right. I don't think the Wizards are close to a parade.
Starting point is 00:33:52 I do think they may be nearing being a much better team, and that's exciting to me. They should be. They have enough assets. And the Nats right now, even though they lost yesterday to Kansas City, you know, they might be in the postseason this year. They might be the next team playing a playoff game. I don't think that's going to happen. Do you?
Starting point is 00:34:18 I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think it's going to happen either, but the fact is, like I said, you're much closer to trading deadline than opening day. Right. And then that you're in the hunt. Yeah, I think if I'm going to take a guess, and I put it in this order,
Starting point is 00:34:36 I would say skins followed by caps, followed by Nats, followed by wizards, in that order. It's not the order that I'd prefer. The order that I'd prefer is skins, wizards, Nats, caps. But football is so unpredictable, wild. I mean, look, New England and Seattle last year were in the Super Bowl, and before the season started, they had win. totals of seven and a half.
Starting point is 00:35:09 Nobody had them going to where they went to. So it could happen. And we, you know, the other reason you feel somewhat justified in picking Washington is because of Jaden Daniels, because they have a quarterback that matters and has a chance to be great. So I would say that that's the best guess on the next parade. I don't know when it'll be, but it would have to be during his career
Starting point is 00:35:39 that they get won, hopefully. And yeah, so I would have that. And again, caps just because of the total, fickle, random nature of the NHL playoffs. I think that's a good lineup. Yeah, followed by Nats, followed by Wizards. Because the NBA, even though we've had eight straight winners in eight straight years with eight different matchups,
Starting point is 00:36:06 and it seems to be that we've entered this new era of less dynasty and more parity, it's still the hardest of the four to win a title in. Do you agree with that? I think that that might be true. There have probably been fewer winners of the NBA finals over, let's say, the last 50 years than any of the last 50 years than any of the last. the other three major sports. I would agree with that.
Starting point is 00:36:38 I'm going to guess that that's true. I mean, because for a while, it was just, you know, it was Celtics, Lakers, it was Celtics forever, it was Celtics Lakers, you know, occasionally the Knicks, occasionally, you know, the Sixers, then we're going to the 80s, it's the Lakers and the Celtics again, and then it's the Pistons, and it's the Bulls for six, yeah, there's no sports. sport that's had more dynastic runs than the NBA. It's the hardest of the four-to-old title in. I mean, in our lifetime.
Starting point is 00:37:12 In our lifetime. In our lifetime. Baseball. Because the Yankees. Before, yeah, before we knew what was going on. Yeah. Let me just see if I can get a quick answer. And how many teams have won NBA titles?
Starting point is 00:37:29 21 different franchises out of the 30 have won NBA titles. So in the NFL, we know it's more than that because there are only, what, still four remaining franchises that haven't won a Super Bowl? Detroit hasn't. Cleveland hasn't. Jacksonville hasn't. And the Titans,
Starting point is 00:37:53 I think those are the four, right? Well, the Cardinals haven't won a Super Bowl. So the Cardinals haven't. the, I'm going through the list here. In terms of won a chance, the Falcons haven't won a Super Bowl. Oh, yeah, no, the Falcons haven't won a Super Bowl. Carolina hasn't won a Super Bowl. Detroit hasn't won a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:38:23 Minnesota. Yeah, the list of teams that haven't won a Super Bowl is longer than the teams that haven't been to a Super Bowl. The teams that haven't been to a Super Bowl is a pretty short list. I think I gave out the teams. Houston, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Cleveland, Detroit, might be the list. Okay. We both have the skins, our football team, as the most likely to win a championship and have a parade on this parade day in New York.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Mini camp is continuing, and there have been things that have been reported about, players that Dan Quinn has been impressed by in this offseason. We'll get to that after these words from a few of our sponsors. All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelley's. Shelly's back room at 1331 F-Tree, Northwest. We'll be open this Sunday on Father's Day. Intent, a great place to take your father on Father's Day. so he can enjoy a great meal, have a quality drink, and have an excellent cigar from their tremendous collection that they have.
Starting point is 00:39:48 They always typically have the top 25 cigar aficionado selections on hand. You know, so just a suggestion out there if you're looking for something special. And if you can't make it down the D.C. With your dad, here's what else you can do. You can buy gift cards online for Shelly's Backroom. You just go to shelley's backroom.com, go down the gift cards. You can buy gift cards from $25 to $200. And you can send that card via email to the person you're buying it for
Starting point is 00:40:28 or a text message as well to find out more. Go to shelley's backroom.com. Great idea. Gift cards for dad. Do you know that I didn't realize it was Father's Day until yesterday this weekend? Swear to God. And usually it sets up with the U.S. Open. I like to say that.
Starting point is 00:40:52 I like to say that's a shock. Yeah. But look, I don't mean this in a derogatory way. But you're kind of clueless about things that are going on around you, aren't you? Not really. I wouldn't say that. But when it comes to like holidays and birthdays and stuff, yeah, they've never been major priorities for me, except for the biggies, you know, the big holidays. But I don't know why I didn't know what was Father's Day. But my father texted me last night and said, hey, do you guys want to do something on Sunday for Father's Day? And I was actually with my wife at dinner. and I looked at her and I said, Sunday's Father's Day? She goes, yeah, I was going to ask you
Starting point is 00:41:38 if you wanted to do anything for Father's Day. I'm like, I should have known because it always sinks up with the U.S. Open every year. It sinks up with U.S. Open golf. But I just didn't give it thought, in part because Tommy, as true empty nesters now,
Starting point is 00:41:56 I don't really, you know, if the boys wanted to celebrate Father's Day and do something great, If my wife wants to do something, it's not, I shouldn't say this. It's not like it's not the same, but she's not motivated necessarily, and I'm not necessarily needy in that regard. I just don't care about birthdays and things like Father's Day. I just don't.
Starting point is 00:42:25 My Father's Day gift every year, I actually ask her if it's okay if I can play golf on Mother's Day, as a Father's Day gift. Wow, that's sneaky. That's pretty good. But anyway, my father reminded me that it was, and so we have plans for Father's Day. I'm going to be spending, you know, brunch with my father and his wife, and my wife and me, and we'll have a brunch,
Starting point is 00:42:56 and that'll be Father's Day. And then I'll come home and sit on the couch and watch a U.S. Open, which is always one of my favorite things to do on Father's Day. I haven't heard anything about any plan, so I'm assuming there are none. So if that's the case, I have a plan of my own that I want to engage with my wife in. And it's pretty simple. You know, I want to go to dinner, but you're going to laugh at this. I want to go to dinner at Texas Road home.
Starting point is 00:43:29 I'm not going to laugh. at it. They got, because, I've had a Texas roadhouse before. Yeah, they've got this great,
Starting point is 00:43:37 uh, tree fried chicken. Uh-huh. With this great cream sauce on it. Oh. And they got those great rolls. Yeah. Those great rolls.
Starting point is 00:43:48 You know, they, they walk you to your table while they're bringing a basket of rolls. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. And it's not the kind of restaurant that normally my wife would want to go to. Mm-hmm. So,
Starting point is 00:44:01 on Father's Day, I have the cachet or at least the high ground to say, let's go to Texas Roadhouse. And then after that, I want to go see the New Spielberg movie. I've been to a movie
Starting point is 00:44:17 in person in a long time. This is the disclosure disclosure date, yeah. Yeah. Definitely want to see it. So that may be my father's day. Or it may
Starting point is 00:44:33 be something that just turns the shit, who knows? I have a Texas Roadhouse menu up in front of me. You like the country fried chicken. Tender white meat chicken breast, hand-battered, golden-fried and topped with choice of gravy, served with choice of two sides.
Starting point is 00:44:50 And by the way, I see the rolls right now. They're already buttered up before they get to the table. They are. Yeah. They are. It's amazing. And, you know, the lines to get in a Texas Road house are amazing. Really?
Starting point is 00:45:07 Like on a weekend, it's a two-hour week. Do you know, I stood in line recently for food? There's this place in Shaw called Eby's. It's a bar restaurant. And right now it's like, you know, I always, my middle son's great at this, but we both are always kind of looking for, you know, what's the hottest place right now? What's really good? What's new and good?
Starting point is 00:45:38 E.B.'s opened up, I don't know, maybe a year ago. And let me just say, other than Shelly's, of course, the burger at Eby's is phenomenal. And I've now been twice. I actually went with Cooley when he was in town for this wedding that we were both in. and it was Sunday and he's like well my flight isn't until tomorrow morning and he was staying with me
Starting point is 00:46:04 and I said well he goes what are we going to do today and I said you know what we're going to go to Ebies and you're going to get one of the best burgers in town and there was a line you know the lines aren't what they were for a while but a phenomenal burger
Starting point is 00:46:21 and totally worth it and a great beer menu you would love some of the beer options they have it's in Shaw you know it's it's perfect you know location by the way after we did that we then went to the MGM
Starting point is 00:46:34 we went to the MGM and gambled for about three hours that was actually the day of Harley's 50th birthday which he had down at the wharf but I don't I'm not a big line waiter in
Starting point is 00:46:51 you know I don't love waiting in lines but I can tell you EBE's the burger, and I'm sure some of you are familiar with it, it's worth waiting in line for. First rate place. And the place in general is just a good neighborhood, you know, bar, you know, restaurant. All right. What were we going to do in this segment? Oh, well, I got something for you, but let me fill the void here for a minute. Well, I... Okay, with my little tippets unless you don't want me to. Well, I'd like you to save the tidbits for the final segment because we've had a show that's been, I think, really based on tidbits. I mean, there have been a lot of tidbits.
Starting point is 00:47:35 The theme has been tidbity on this show today. I think we have created a show that our first email or would have right. Lynn said the best shows we do aren't sports shows. but I also know because I'm able to pay attention to how many people listen to the show and which shows do really well versus which shows that don't. And I know it's pretty important that we talk about the football team if there is something to talk about. And there is because Dan Quinn held this final press conference before training camp
Starting point is 00:48:16 when they reconvene at the end of July in Ashburn, because today was the last day of their mandatory minicamp. And there were two things that he said that I'm going to read from the transcript on. In his opening statement, you know, Dan Quinn has an opening statement, as you know, for every press conference. He typically has some sort of theme or he's thanking somebody or, you know, God forbid he's wishing somebody sympathies. But whatever it is, he's always got an opening statement. Well, today he kind of, you know, thanked a couple of people, a couple of scouts who were leaving the organization, and then he kind of summed up mini camp. And he said, it was important, it was an important three days on the field, honestly. I was really trying to pressure test some people to see, you know, what that would look like. And who would be some of the people that would jump out? The teams worked incredibly hard, strength and conditioning-wise, they've made significant gains, but just a few people, I thought, jumped out.
Starting point is 00:49:27 So this is, like I mentioned the other day that the first name he mentioned when he was asked about other receivers other than Terry McClorn. The first name that popped into his mind was Van Jefferson. I think that stuff can be telling. I think that's because it's, yeah, I think it's an easy name to remember. Okay, well, it could be that too. Okay. Yeah, I mean, Luke McCaffrey is not that difficult of a name. Chucoby Jones isn't very hard to forget.
Starting point is 00:49:55 There are others out there. So here were the names of the players that he thought jumped out during minicamp. The first one is a player that I'm unfamiliar with. Defensive N. T.J. Morin Younga. He said he thought he improved significantly. during mini camp. Now, like, this, by the way,
Starting point is 00:50:22 if I went back and I pulled all of these transcripts from coaches over the years for this time of year and the players that they mentioned, it's, this is why I don't take this part
Starting point is 00:50:38 of the calendar very seriously because you end up with the Jimmy Morlins and the Antonio Gandhi Goldens and the, you know, Randy Moss's son, Thaddeus Moss. Everybody's raving about him.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Everybody's shooting out play-by-play of them, and none of them even make the team. But I think when the head coach says it, it's worth paying attention to. So that was the first name. Johnny Newton's name popped up. He calls him Jay-Z. They're calling him Jay-Z. That's his nickname, J-Z. Newton is his real name, even though at Illinois everybody referred to him as Johnny.
Starting point is 00:51:13 He said, I thought we had a really good camp with the line. backers, Cain Madrano, Jordan McGee were both mentioned. I think in a Durante Jones defense, if it does end up looking like a Brian Flores defense, I've thought from the beginning that Kane Madrano would be an interesting player to watch because he is, he's not Andrew Van Ginkle. There really isn't another Andrew Van Ginkle in this league in terms of the way he plays and the kind of plays he makes. But Kane Madrano made similar plays when he was at UCLA.
Starting point is 00:51:54 That was really his calling card, as he was a big-time turnover guy. And then he mentioned wide receivers. It was good to see, remember when we talked about this guy, Jaden Bradley. Yes, yes. Jaden Bradley is the big six-foot-four-inch kid from UNLV that Terry McCorn's been raving about.
Starting point is 00:52:15 and then once again, he mentioned Van Jefferson. So those were the players that he mentioned in his opening statement. Actually, there are a few more here. He said also in terms of the overall offseason, I thought Rashad White had an exceptional offseason. I'm telling you, I've thought this since the moment they acquired him, that Rashad White's going to end up being the back. that is the primary back when the season begins more than Kroski Merritt.
Starting point is 00:52:52 It's just a hunch. It's not based on anything. I have heard that they really liked White and wanted him in free agency. He's a veteran back. I think he's always been a solid runner between the tackles. He's not a home run threat, but he's a good pass receiver out of the backfield, and he's a really good pass blocker. And I think Rashad White's going to be a big part of what they're.
Starting point is 00:53:15 do this year. He said Rashad White jumped out. He said, Caleb on Chase on the addition from New England, the pass rusher, was another one that in camp, you know, doesn't have pads, but showed a lot of edge and toughness in the way he competes. So he mentioned those two guys as well. So there you go. Some names from Dan Quinn today on who's impressed him both in minicamp and then overall, for the off season. Well, this podcast will keep an eye on those guys. I can tell you that.
Starting point is 00:53:53 Yes, it will. We'll keep an eye on those guys for sure. And we'll report back when we have further information about how impressive they may be doing when they return to camp. Let me mention one other thing, skins related. Aaron Shats, the DVOA creator, we've had Aaron on the show many times, wrote a column for ESPN.com this morning, titled 32 moves, 32 final moves for NFL teams. So he has one more move for each NFL team.
Starting point is 00:54:29 And the move that he suggests that Washington make is signing wide receiver Tyree Kill. He writes, the caveat here is, if health, because Tyreek Hill time is coming off ACL, a real shredded up knee from last year in week four playing with the dolphins. But he writes, the commanders could use a solid number two receiver and a field stretcher who is a step up from Diami Brown. They are currently third in cap space, so the economics work for them. Jaden Daniels is a dynamic young quarterback who could get the ball out to Hill. You know, it's been a while since we've mentioned Tyreek Hill. We've been very focused on Diggs and Ayuk.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Those have been the two areas of focus. But Tyree Kill, now, you know, the health is everything. He's 32 years old and he had a very serious injury. But people, when he had the surgery, they said should be ready for the beginning of 2026. By the way, I don't think he'll end up in Washington. I think he'll end up in Kansas City, but that's beside the point. what a combo that would be if you had the Tyreek Hill of a few years ago on the field with Jaden Daniels and then with Terry McClewell and with Chigacanquo.
Starting point is 00:55:53 I don't know if you'd be getting that player. That would be something. No, we're not, you're not getting that paper player now. He's not the Tyreek Hill that everybody was mesmerized by. I mean, he's dead. He's old and he's damaged. He's 32, just three years ago when this season starts, 2023, 119 catches for 1,800 yards, and 13 touchdowns. He was still arguably the best receiver in the NFL in 2023.
Starting point is 00:56:24 I will say this, that during that stretch of Kansas City and even the first few years in Miami, he was the most feared offensive player in football. and I'm not counting quarterbacks. In terms of skilled position players, there was not a player that produced more fear for defensive coordinators than Tyree killed it. Now, if you think you're getting that player,
Starting point is 00:56:51 when last healthy in 2024, 81 receptions, not a, you know, a rough year for Miami that year, 959 yards, six touchdowns, and then last year, through four games or three and a half games when he got injured. He had 21 catches. So, you know, he was on pace, you know, at five catches, you know, per game,
Starting point is 00:57:14 somewhere around five catches per game for another 85 catch season, right? Five catches times 17. Yeah. So, yeah, I'd be interested. Look, I'm interested in all of these people if they check out physically and mentally. and they can be had for a very low-risk contract. I think Stefan Diggs is going to get paid a little bit. That's my guess.
Starting point is 00:57:42 By who? So, good question, because let's see who. He had him projected, he had Stefan Diggs going to the Raiders, and the Raiders making that move. The Raiders do not have many receivers. They've got, you know, big Brock Powers is a tight end. but not many receivers.
Starting point is 00:58:03 And then he's got Dibo Samuel ending up in Kansas City. I think Tyreek Hill's going to end up in Kansas City. We'll see. But he's got Diggs going to the Raiders. Diggs, I think, is going to have some choices here in the next few weeks. And I don't think any of these guys are going to be in a rush to sign until all the minicamp and off-season activities are over. And then they'll sign, you know, sometime over the next four weeks.
Starting point is 00:58:31 and be ready to go in training camp. That's the way a lot of these veterans do. I'm sorry? You want Tyree Kill? Yeah, I mean, if you toy, again, like with Brandon Ayuk, we can't do, we're not doing the medical, we're not doing the psychological evaluation, but if you, if Adam Peters said, we, we, we worked him out. We're getting the Tyree Kill of, you know, Tyree Kill, you know, fame. We're not getting a guy with a shredded knee who's not confident on the knee, whose knee is damaged, and he's a different player.
Starting point is 00:59:07 If you tell me we're getting that player, well, of course I would want Tyree Kill. Yes. Yeah. Okay. A few more things, including I will answer the question about Trey Young that I know so many of you have about him opting out of his contract with the Wizards. We'll have that, and then Tommy's got a tidbit or two left in him to finish up the show. We'll get to that after these words from a few of our sponsors. This segment of the show brought you by MyBooky.
Starting point is 00:59:46 If you want to bet the World Cup, My Booky's the place to do it because they're offering a $500 betback bonus for your first bet. What does that mean? Starting point is 01:00:34 It's a no-risk bet. Right now at my bookie, by the way, France has sort of pulled ahead as a big favorite now. Plus 360. Spain is next at plus 590. By the way, if I didn't mention this the other day, the U.S., Tommy, they play Australia tomorrow night in Seattle or tomorrow afternoon in Seattle. they are currently the 10th favorite to win the World Cup. Only nine teams have better odds than the USA.
Starting point is 01:01:09 The U.S. at my bookie right now, 40 to 1 to win the World Cup. I have been watching this. I talked about the messy game. He scored three goals the other night. It was very exciting. I watched Rinaldo yesterday, Portugal-tied Congo. And everybody's saying you got to bench Ronaldo. He's no good anymore.
Starting point is 01:01:33 I watched the game. I didn't notice that he wasn't that good. But I don't know what I'm looking at. But I don't know. That's like a huge story in the World Cup is Ronaldo. Somebody wrote basically 10 men and a statue. That's what Portugal is with Ronaldo on the field. It's been exciting.
Starting point is 01:01:55 I've really enjoyed it. and I can't wait for the U.S. game tomorrow. MyBooky's the place to wager. If you've got a team that you like or a game that you like, mybooky.ag, mybooky.com promo code, Kevin D.C. For the $500, up to a $500 betback bonus. So let me just real quickly before you get to your tidbits to end the show. Big story, you know, in the NBA late yesterday is that
Starting point is 01:02:28 Trey Young declined his near $49 million player option for the upcoming season, and he will become a free agent on Monday when NBA free agency begins. This was expected, people, because the Wizards are intending to give him a multi-year deal as a free agent. They expected this. This was expected. Almost everybody in the sport that covers the sport expects Trey Young to sign
Starting point is 01:03:02 a free agent contract with the Wizards next week. Is it possible that he enters free agency and somebody gives him a deal that's so much better than the Wizards deal that he says, yeah, I'm going to go elsewhere? Of course, he's an actual unrestricted free agent beginning on Monday
Starting point is 01:03:19 after declining his player option. But the expectation is that he's going to sign a multi-year contract extension with the Wizards. So, all right, what were your tidbits? Well, on the roster for the D.C. Gray's this year is Darrell Strawberry's grandson. Wow. Is that DJ Strawberry's son? Yes, DJ Strawberry's son. Wow, that's crazy.
Starting point is 01:03:53 DJ Strawberry has a son old enough to play for the D.C. Grays, it seems like yesterday DJ Strawberry was, for those of you who don't know, was a very good player for Gary Williams at Maryland as a basketball player. And Daryl Strawberry went to all those games. He was always at Maryland games when his son was playing. Wow. I'm hoping Darrell will show up to a D.C. Grace game. that would be pretty cool.
Starting point is 01:04:19 His name is Carter, Carter, let me see, Carter Sweeney, Strawberry. Carter Sweeney Strawberry. He was a freshman at Rutgers this year. 6'3-190, so he's got some size. How old is he? Because I just pulled up DJ Strawberry.
Starting point is 01:04:40 DJ Strawberry is 40, he's 41 years old. Well, this kid's a freshman. Okay. Yeah, okay, perfect. God, man. DJ Strawberry. He's from Allie.
Starting point is 01:04:55 Yeah. Yeah. You know, DJ Strawberry came to Maryland. He, you know, he was living in California. He went to that, you know, very sort of iconic, athletic high school in L.A. Modern Day. And came to Maryland, mid-2000s played through. He was a good player.
Starting point is 01:05:16 You know, he came in. He was raw, but, man, did he turn into a... a really, really good player, super competitive. And so, all right, so the strawberries are producing athletes. Yeah, we've had a couple of celebrity connections before. Duffy Baker's son, Darren, Dary for the Grays one year, and Jeff Kent's son. Wow.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Played for the Grays one year, too. Wow. Okay. Yeah. What's your other kid, baby? tidbit is, I won another writing award. Okay. Tell us about the latest award that you've won and where that award sits right now.
Starting point is 01:06:02 Well, the Society of Professional Journalist, the local Washington, D.C. chapter has a writing contest every year called the Dateline Awards, Journalism Contest. and one of the categories, they don't have a local sports column category. They have a local columns category, which includes news columns. Wow. I won that. You won for the news column with your sports column? Yes.
Starting point is 01:06:33 Now, did you have to submit something for this? Well, the paper does. I mean, reporters don't. Yeah. Papers do. So do you know what they submitted? What story they submitted? I gave them, they asked me for three.
Starting point is 01:06:48 Generally, they want three columns for an entry. Okay. And so I picked the three columns, send them to the bosses at the paper, and then they submit them to the contest. What were the three columns? Were there any that we talked about on the show? One was about the commanders, before, you know, the Commander Stadium in D.C. before the deal was made.
Starting point is 01:07:18 Okay. The other was about the NBA betting scandal. Mm-hmm. And the third was about Pete Rose, another betting. Okay. All right. So. And so you won this award?
Starting point is 01:07:31 Like, is there just one winner for the columns category? Yes. And you won? There's a bunch of finalists and one winner. Was there a finalist of note that you beat out? Somebody that we would all know? I don't think so. Okay.
Starting point is 01:07:51 And I might want to point out this is the third time I've won this award. So what did they send you? A certificate, a plaque, a trophy? I'll get a certificate. And you'll frame it? A nice certificate. You'll frame it and put it somewhere? Yes, with some of my others.
Starting point is 01:08:11 I don't have all my awards up because it just wouldn't be enough room. No, I mean, the office that you had at 1801 Rockville Pike where the station was for many years, I mean, it was bursting at the seams with awards. I mean, they were all over the place. It was a shrine built to yourself and you could barely walk in there on some days. We started to talk about a much bigger office or just a separate office for Tommy's. awards. That would have been a better idea. Let me just say, without, I mean, it should go without saying, this does not compare
Starting point is 01:08:52 to the D.C. podcast, sports podcast association awards, we have won. It certainly doesn't compare to a roadhouse, Texas, Texas Roadhouse menu, which I hope you get access to on Father's Day. Thank you. You've already made this suggestion, right? No, I have not. Oh. Well, how do you think that'll come about if she doesn't know that that's what you want to do? Well, I'll wait and see if there's an invite from my oldest son for something else he has in mind. Oh, okay. If not, this is what I want to do. Well, maybe, you know, okay. I was just going to say that... Do you want to interfere with my family business, the Father's Day? Well, I certainly will and would if I thought it made sense.
Starting point is 01:09:45 But it's Father's Day. You are, you know, you're the father of this family. And, you know, not to sound like, you know, that we're in the final stages, in the final stages of your life. You know, I always love sharing a stage with you, you know, as in the final stage. of your life. That's a Nikki Glazier line about Robert De Niro on one of those roasts. Do you like her, by the way? No, not a fan. Oh, I'm a big fan. But, you know, how many Father's Days, I mean, realistically, go ahead, say it. Say it. Do you have left? Go ahead. Do we all have left? How many father's days do I have a lot? I mean, if you want Texas Roadhouse and you're hell bent,
Starting point is 01:10:40 on Texas Roadhouse, and this is something you'd really like to do on Sunday for Father's Day, I think I might just get the word out if you're not going to put the word out. You must walk around your house saying to yourself, I wish I hadn't said that all the time. I think we both have that issue for sure. There's a whole lot of, I can't believe I said that back then. All right. Anything else? Nothing else for you, boss. All right. Good job today. I will talk to you on Tuesday.
Starting point is 01:11:17 Have a good weekend and happy Father's Day to you. Happy Father's Day to you guys. I'll be back tomorrow, everybody.
