Starting point is 00:00:00 You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show, here's Kevin. Designed to play, get it out there. The second was commit to this running game between the tackles, which has opened up everything else. And Jimere Gibbs takes it all the way. That was the seventh Detroit score on its seventh drive of the game. They would go eight for eight until they ran out the clock on their final drive. Look, the Lions are elite on offense.
Starting point is 00:00:39 They've been that for a few years now. Washington's defense is repulsive. I'm in for a quick post game following a fifth straight loss, a fourth straight loss by 21 or more. That's the first time that's happened, losing four straight by 21 points or more in 23 seasons. in the NFL. This one to the Lions, 44 to 22. The second time this year, they've been beaten by that same score, 44 to 22. The first time it happened was in Dallas. Window Nation is the presenting sponsor of this show, 86690 Nation or windownation.com if you need new windows. This one was over early. This felt very much like, you know, a September game between a power conference,
Starting point is 00:01:30 you know, SEC team against a much smaller sunbelt team as an example. You know, the outcome was pretty much known a few minutes into the game. You knew by the middle of the first quarter, the final score was going to be a whole lot to a little bit, and it was. You know, Washington legitimately right now is like a non-power conference college team with the talent they have on the field. You know, in basketball, they're called mid-majors. We know how much this roster has been injured.
Starting point is 00:02:00 and how many man games have been lost. It's been a catastrophic season when it comes to injuries. And yes, they've played some very good teams on their schedule this year. The last three weeks, they've basically, you know, faced three top five teams in the country, you know, as a sunbelt team because that's the kind of talent they're putting out on the field. But it's more than that, you know, the more is this. The more is that injuries in a tougher schedule,
Starting point is 00:02:30 alone can't be the only reasons that this defense is this bad. Can't be. I'm not sure how much of this disaster defensive coordinator Joe Whit Jr. is responsible for, but at this point, it can't be none of it. His defense was bad last year. It's not only worse this year. It's become, along with the Bengals defense, a laughing stock defense in the league right now. And it's time that Dan Quinn, a defensive head coach, steps in and says, enough is enough,
Starting point is 00:03:05 and either takes it over himself, gives it to somebody else, and whether that means Witt Jr. gets fired is almost immaterial to me. Although I know how many of you want a scalp right now. I know how many of you want somebody to get canned. I personally don't need a scalp right now. I'm not going to argue with it, but I'm I don't need it to be placated. I don't know enough, nor do you, by the way, how much of this problem is the coordinator or how much of this problem is personnel or injuries or all of the above. But the problem is that the defense under Witt Jr. was bad last year, too. He's been the team's defensive coordinator now for 30 games, and 23 of them have been bad.
Starting point is 00:03:53 15 of them horrifically bad, like today. Big 12 bad. The last two games in particular are likely franchise record setting, I would assume, in terms of the combined points, yards, drive success, etc. I don't have those record book numbers, you know, in front of me. Someone will produce them, I'm sure. But if I get them before the end of this podcast, I'll share them with you. I know this much as of the recording of this podcast, about an hour after the game.
Starting point is 00:04:28 The Lions scored on every drive they had until they ran the clock out on their final drive. They went eight for eight scoring, no punts, no turnovers, no turnover on downs. The record, and I looked this up in the second half, because I saw that Detroit was trending towards something unimaginable. You know, no punts, no turnovers, and no drives that didn't end in a score. The record for consecutive drives in a game where you got scores without a punt or a turnover, I think I found it. It was seven for seven. Buffalo did it against New England in the 2021 playoffs.
Starting point is 00:05:15 They ended up winning that game 47 to 17. They actually missed two extra points. It was seven touchdowns on seven drives. Detroit was eight for eight before taking the final drive and running the clock out. But no punts, no turnovers. I don't know if they measure that differently as an eight for nine because they ran the clock out on the final drive. Look, this defense right now can't cover, can't rush the passer, can't stop the run, can't take the ball away. They don't tackle well.
Starting point is 00:05:48 the lion scored 44 points, generated 546 yards, at eight yards per play. Eight, golfed through for 320 and three touchdowns. He barely got hit, let alone sacked. He was 25 of 33, and of the 25 completions, didn't you think that maybe 18, 19, 20 of them were with no defender being within like 10 to 15 yards of the receiver? I just kept writing over and over again on my notes. Oh, my God, he's wide open again. Jemir Gibbs, 142 yards on 15 carries.
Starting point is 00:06:31 They should have given it to him 25 times in the playoff game. He averaged nine and a half yards today. I think he was at 10 yards in the first half in the playoff game, seven and a half yards for the entire game. But for some reason in that playoff game, Ben Johnson stopped giving him the ball. That was a blessing in that playoff game. This franchise has had bad defenses, man, especially in the last, you know, 15 or so years.
Starting point is 00:07:01 This one right now is the worst. It literally doesn't do anything well, nothing. I know they're putting players out there that they didn't anticipate having out there as much as they are. I get it. They've been a very injured football team. And look, the Chief Seahawks Lions, last three opponents, all really good teams. The Seahawks and Lions in particular, absolutely elite offensively. The Seahawks put up 35 on the Cardinals, 38 in the first half, I think it was.
Starting point is 00:07:37 But the defense is more than just injuries and opponents right now. And today, you know, it went a step further. It lost its cool. Duran Payne ejected for punching Amman Rae St. Brown. It was a good punch. The coverage of it by Fox, by the way, embarrassing. They did a terrible job. They let us know like two, three minutes after it happened.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And then we got the video, but very little info other than that. Kinlaw, Kwan Martin, got unsportsman-like penalties called against them. At least one of those happened, I think, on a P.A.T. But the lack of discipline today by the players on defense was a joke. I would like to know if Amon Rae St. Brown did something or said something. It doesn't justify the response. I'm not about to get to that. But for Duran to swing that wildly, and basically it was a sucker punch, too,
Starting point is 00:08:36 I'd like to know what Amon Ross St. Brown did to make Duran that mad. And maybe I'll have that information before we wrap this up. I've been looking for it. Look, the team in the season are unraveling right now. Injuries are the biggest part of it. Happens every year to two, three, four teams. But injuries don't explain the defense's lack of resistance. Zero resistance today, other than pain swinging at an opponent after the opponent scored.
Starting point is 00:09:07 And by the way, how did you like Kinlaw jawing at golf? with the team down 20. Losing cool happens. Losing cool and mass happens when things are unraveling. It felt that way watching today. My game take next after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey guys, Goldbelly is fast becoming one of my favorite websites. I've told you about it previously.

Starting point is 00:12:41 Jalen Lee. The offense wasn't the problem today. I'm not going to tell you that they played great. You know, it wasn't something to write home about. But the offense did play its cleanest game in about a month and a half. More on that coming up in my game take. But that 41-yarder from Marietta to Jalen Lane, one of the nicest plays of the day for Washington's offense. This segment of the show,
Starting point is 00:13:08 brought to you by Window Nation. Starting point is 00:13:57 Call them if you've been thinking about new windows. Mention my name. They take care of all of my listeners. All right, let's get to my game take. Pay attention. Here's Kevin's Game Take. The Game Take is always a list of the good, a list of the bad, both from Washington's perspective, and some other observations as well. I do think it's important on, you know, post games like this one following, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:30 an absolute one-sided beatdown, like the one they suffered today, like the one they suffered last Sunday night, to put everything in its, proper context, especially on anything you want to be positive about. Like, these last two games were different than the Kansas City and the Dallas blowouts that preceded them. The Kansas City game was tied up at halftime, 7 to 7. They actually played pretty well on offense and about as well as they can play on defense in the first half.
Starting point is 00:15:01 The Dallas game was a 20 to 15 game late in the first half, and then got out of hand, especially once Jaden got hurt and exited the game. I think you just have to keep in mind, because I'm going to be positive about a couple of things here on this first list, that, you know, I understand that a lot of it happens in the, you know, environment of the other team is having their way with our team, and their motivations start to change as the game goes on. They're not threatened.
Starting point is 00:15:35 They don't feel threatened. They probably start to lose concentration. The coach starts to put in other players, backup players, et cetera. So, yeah, I get that. With that understood, let me get to a list of the things that I liked. I'm going to start with this. Their kick and punt coverage today, like it's been all year long, and like it was last year too,
Starting point is 00:16:00 except for that Dallas home game last year, it's just flat out one of the best in the league. Larry Izzo does a great job with this special teams unit. We had the issues with kickers last year and even some kicking issues this year. But man, their kick and punt coverage consistently, one of the best in the game. Today, three punt returns, the average return, one yard. Three kickoff returns, the average kickoff return. 20 yards. By the way, they came into this weekend, number one, on their own kickoff returns.
Starting point is 00:16:39 And Noah I, who was back there today on kickoff returns, had a 46-yard kickoff return after Detroit's first touchdown, right? That wasn't on the opening kickoff. I think that was the second kickoff. So that's an area that was decent today as well. But on coverage, man, they are good. And that Nick Ballore, number 57, what a player he is on special teams and has been for this team. Not bad for a 36-year-old. I think he is the second oldest player on the team behind Josh Johnson. On the list of things that were good from today. Keeping in the special teams mindset, truss away.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Four punts averaged 50 yards per kick, 49 yards net. bad for Tress Way again. Next on this list, Zach Ertz. How about Zach Ertz? Four catches for 54 yards and three of them were truly excellent catches. I mean, contested, tight catches, balls that could have gone either way, kind of 50-50 balls. I'm sure Steve Suter on Wednesday's film breakdown will kill him for his blocking, but he had some excellent catches. I thought it was one of his best days of the year as a pass catcher, four for 54. And again, three of them at least, right? Super contested. You know, I'll throw Jalen Lane in there for that excellent catch on that 41-yarder, which was also, you know, very contested. Berks, I mean, Traylon Burks, who wasn't
Starting point is 00:18:16 on this roster two weeks ago, three weeks ago, three passes caught for 58 yards. Debo had a sick catch late in the game. Dan Campbell challenged it. He didn't think it was a catch. It was. Debo, four catches for just 29 yards. He did have that touchdown. Two of those catches were those touch passes, you know, right behind the line of scrimmage. Shotgun snap, touch it to Debo, who's in motion. That counts as a pass reception. You know, it was not like a great day for Debo, but I'm just giving him credit for that really tough contested catch. Next up, like the offense played for the most part pretty well, but more importantly, its first clean game in a while. Like this wasn't a great offensive day. I'm not about to claim that, okay? They didn't have an
Starting point is 00:19:07 opportunity to be great because they didn't have the ball enough. The other team just kept scoring and kept possessing the football. But it was a clean game. It's been weeks since they've played without truly beating themselves on offense. And I said that this was one of the keys. you know, to, you know, hanging in there. And they pulled that part off. No turnovers. I don't think there were any drops, none that I can think of. No killer penalties on offense.
Starting point is 00:19:35 The team had eight penalties overall for 61 yards, but I think most of the penalty yardage was on defense or special teams. Again, the context of the game with the defense giving up scores on every drive made it somewhat less urgent for the Lions defense. you know, especially when they got the big lead. But the Lions defense has been really good this year. And I thought offensively, I think the positive takeaway is it wasn't self-destructive. They didn't commit the mistakes they've been committing week in and week out for basically a month and a half.
Starting point is 00:20:11 So good on the offense for that. Sure, let's put Marcus Marioata on the list of things that were good from the game. I thought he was, for the most part, you know, better than average. Nothing spectacular because, you know, his receivers made some very good catches. I mean, Ertz and Debo and Lane and Burks. But, you know, and I thought Cliff did a better job of, you know, keeping them for the most part on schedule. You know, that's a better job from Cliff today than he's done recently. He tried to run the ball.
Starting point is 00:20:52 They had 27 rushes, I think. If you take Mario Tos three scrambles, 24 in the game. They tried to run more play action off of being able to run the football a tiny bit. Not great. Even had some quick games. So I think Cliff adjusted to the issues from last week. Mario daughter was 16 of 22 for 213 yards. Ran five times for 22 yards.
Starting point is 00:21:16 No real mistakes. A few sacks that maybe were on him, including one. on a P.A.T. Although there was a penalty on that play. Mariotta is what we want for this team. A really good backup and a capable starter, especially in this system. I think he was B plus, A minus. Maybe that's a bit of a reach. There were some inaccurate throws for sure on third down, but B plus-ish for sure. Again, it helps when, you know, Chris Paul's not grabbing a face mask and Zach Ertz isn't, you know, false starting. And, you know, Taylor Beaudish isn't, you know, going low on somebody. The penalties and the drops have been a major, major problem in keeping this offense, whether it
Starting point is 00:22:08 was Marioita or Jaden over the last month and a half. And tonight, today, the offense played cleanly. Last on the list of things that I liked, Quinn took Mario'd out. You know, maybe a series too late, but who's counting at this point? So that's it for the good list. All right, what I did not like from this game, this is really all about the defense. It's not like I have a long list here. I'm just going to continue where I started in the opening segment. You know, I said a lot there, but you'd be hard pressed to find more than a few games in the
Starting point is 00:22:48 league this year. Cincinnati and Dallas have probably played one or two that were similar to this one. But this was as bad as it gets defensively for one team. It was non-competitive. Other than a couple of red zone stops, Detroit was four for six in the red zone. The defense was in complete shambles from the start. The lions, you know, do this to a lot of teams. I understand how good they are offensively. I do. But this was just so easy. for them. I mean, they were playing seven on seven pitch and catch, you know, in the past game. And then they ran it down Washington's throat with their run game. There was no pass rush. And when I say no pass rush, no sacks, and I would guess the lowest pass rush pressure rate of the season. I'm going to
Starting point is 00:23:37 guess. I have no idea what those numbers are. It's hard to describe just how bad this team was defensively. But let me try with this. Listen carefully to this. Okay. because I did the math on this. On the Lions' first seven drives of the game, based on their starting field position, there were 548 yards available to Detroit. So, for example, if you start a drive at your own 30, there are 70 yards available.
Starting point is 00:24:10 They had, over their first seven drives, 548 available yards, and they got 534 of the 548. I don't know if that's a record or not in terms of, you know, I don't even know if NextGen or anybody else like that keeps those numbers. That seems almost impossible, especially when you consider what I said in the open, that the record for consecutive scoring drives in a game
Starting point is 00:24:41 without a punt or a turnover coming into today was seven-for-seven Buffalo against New England in a playoff game. I haven't seen that written anywhere in terms of post-game. I just Googled it during the game, and that's what popped up. Maybe it's wrong. We'll find out in the next 24 hours. You know, eight for eight without a punt or a turnover, eight scoring drives, eight opportunities, without a punt, without a turnover, without a turnover on downs.
Starting point is 00:25:13 that seems like it's kind of unprecedented, but maybe it's happened before, who knows? It seems like, you know, if you've got eight scores in a game, nine scores in a game, it usually will come on 12 or 13 drives. But, yeah, 534 out of 548. I mean, they did whatever they wanted to do,
Starting point is 00:25:36 and they did it with no resistance. I don't even know what to say, honestly, about this defensive performance. There's not a proper way to describe just how abysmal it was. The final numbers, 44 points, 576 total yards, 8 yards per play. Good God. 576 or 546? What did I say?
Starting point is 00:26:02 546, 546 yards, excuse me, 8 yards per play. 5 for 10 on 3rd down, 2 for 2 on 4th down. They didn't come close to turning the ball over or making many mistakes. I guess there was that one tipped pass by Louvue that hung in the air for a while. Kinlaw really didn't get close to it. Another game, by the way, without a takeaway. Washington has the third fewest in the league. They've got six now through 10 games.
Starting point is 00:26:32 The two teams with fewer takeaways have played one less game than Washington. It's hard to take the ball away if you're not. near it. And by not near it today, I mean literally at times not anywhere near it. Defenders 10 to 15 yards away from a receiver shortly after the snap. And to catch, there was a second and eight in the fourth quarter, goth through to a Monra out in the flat. And Amonra looked around and I think he thought for a moment that maybe the play had been whistled dead because no one within 15 yards of him. This was a quick pitch and catch.
Starting point is 00:27:16 That's usually when you see defenders closest to the receivers. And he's looking around like, where is everybody? There was a fourth and one to Raymond where I couldn't believe how open he was. It was as if the defense was confused and thought it was first and ten. Maybe they did. You had another situation today where two defenders ran into each other causing a wide open a receiver. They don't even need the defense to do that to themselves, but it's become like a three stooges routine. It wasn't, you know, Latimore and Kwan Martin today, because
Starting point is 00:27:51 Latimore, you know, is uninjured reserve. I don't even remember who it was. I don't understand any of this. It's not normal. You know, it can't be right. You know, Gibbs nine and a half yards per carry, usually untouched until at least the second level, sometimes the third. The lack of discipline by pain, Kinlaw, Kwan Martin. So I have some quotes now. I got them in between the break between the first segment and the second segment. I just went on Twitter real quickly, and I saw that Kime tweeted out the following. Kwan Martin in the locker room apparently just said that he's not sure why he was penalized.
Starting point is 00:28:35 Quote, I was pulled to the ground and kicked in the nuts, closed quote. Kinlaw was upset because he said Amonra St. Brown hit Doran Payne first. Pain retaliated. Kinlaw called it, quote, some bullshit. Closed quote. Yeah. No excuses for losing your cool like that.
Starting point is 00:29:01 None. None at all. Sorry, but that's just lack of discipline, lack of poise. Look, there are times when you lose your cool. I get it. I understand that. Quinn, I'm reading right now as I just refreshed the screen,
Starting point is 00:29:16 apparently has alluded or implied that no changes personnel or coaching staff-wise until the bye week, okay? Look, without any material changes and maybe even with material changes, Tua and the Dolphins are up next in terms of lining up to torch, to light this defense up. And this time, the defense is going to have to endure, you know, an eight-hour flight, seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Madrid, to watch to a throw for 300 and a half.
Starting point is 00:29:58 You know, specific names on defense, as I am still here, on number one on the list of things I did not like from the game, the defense, specific names that were bad, all of them. All of them, except for Jacob Martin, who by the way, Souter's been in love with for a while. He tries so hard. He actually caused a quick throw with a pressure. It was one of the only pressures I saw all day long. The change from booth to sideline for the defensive coordinator was not the answer, clearly. He has not had enough good on-field answers since he got hired last year.
Starting point is 00:30:40 You know, Dan Quinn needs to understand that not doing anything about Joe Witt, Jr. Has started to make him look weak. Maybe he doesn't care, and he has more the answers on why the defense under Joe Witt, Jr. Has been an embarrassment for two seasons running. But I'm just, you know, reading the room here for the coach, not doing something about this, not doing something dramatic to address how bad it is on that side of the ball is not a good look for him. Defense, overall, one of the worst performances
Starting point is 00:31:16 against a very good team, I understand that, and with a limited crew, I get that too. It was still zero resistance. Really, really awful. Also on the list of things that I did not like, third down offense, I put it on here, because really everything to dislike about today's game was just everything that I just went through defensively.
Starting point is 00:31:41 But on offense, they were two for 10 on third down. Marioita inaccurate on a few of those third downs. Some pressure bothered him as well. There was a long yardage third and 15 where they took the checkdown to get in better field goal range. I actually thought that was smart. There was a zone read keeper on a third and three that set up a fourth and one conversion.
Starting point is 00:32:02 So the two for 10 isn't good, but they were, you know, three for three on fourth downs. That's pretty good. So on three of those eight stops, they kept the ball with a fourth down conversion. Not bad. I guess I didn't really care for the punt down 35 to 16 on a fourth and two and a half. I know that they were at their own 28-yard line.
Starting point is 00:32:32 Trust me, I did not have any. you know, delusional thoughts in my head that down 19, they could score two touchdowns, get two two-point conversions, kick a field goal, and tie it to 35. It's like the NFC championship game. It's like they moved the football and offense and they scored some points, but Philly could have named the number. Whatever number they needed, they scored 55 in that game, but if they needed 65, they could have gotten that.
Starting point is 00:32:58 Detroit could have gotten 70 if that's what they wanted today or needed. I just thought fourth and, you know, a short three, and it's late third quarter, why are you going to punt the ball? Because when you get it back, you're going to be down another, you know, seven or six or three or whatever. So I didn't love that either. All right, I'll finish up with just a few other observations after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey, guys, taking care of your mental health shouldn't be harder than taking care of. of your physical health. If you pull a muscle, you go see a doctor. But when it comes to finding the right therapist, suddenly it can be frustrating. You've got long wait lists. You're staring
Starting point is 00:33:43 down huge out-of-pocket costs. That's what usually stops people from getting help. And that's where Rula comes in. Rula makes therapy simple, affordable, and fast. They work with most major insurance plans, and the average session co-pay is just $15. It's basically the cost of lunch, but instead of a sandwich, you're investing in your own headspace. And with Rula, you're not just matched and left to figure it out on your own. They check in and make sure you're actually making progress. Starting point is 00:36:37 slash Kevin D.C. Follower the pouty. It's Jack Campbell who wraps him up. That does not allow him to cross the goal line. O for two on two-point convers. against the Lions. I do have a thought on going for two in this particular game. Kroski Merritt twisted into a pretzel there as he tried to get close to the goal line
Starting point is 00:37:08 on what was a two-point conversion half the distance to the goal after a penalty on the previous play. This final segment of this quick postgame show following Washington's loss to Detroit is brought to you by My Bookie. My bookie's got Miami favored by two in Madrid next Sunday. So Washington an underdog to the dolphins next Sunday. The dolphins coming off a 23 to 6 win over Buffalo. It happens in the NFL. Just didn't happen in our game when a big underdog wins outright against a much better team on paper. My bookie is offering all of my listeners, whether you're a new customer to my

My bookie's got everything you want, including Monday night football. And that is my last of my smell test picks. Now, when I gave it out on Friday, I gave Green Bay out at minus two.
Starting point is 00:38:32 They're now a one-point favorite tomorrow night. The smell test right now is 6, 3, and 2 on the weekend. So I am guaranteed a winning week again. It was 4.1 and 1. Yeah, 6, 3, and 2 right now. me, six, three, and two is my record right now with one game pending tomorrow night, Green Bay. I gave it out at minus two on Friday on Friday show, so I'll stick with it, even though the line is going down at my bookie and is currently won.
Starting point is 00:39:07 Should be a hell of a Monday night game, and we are now relegated, by the way, as Washington fans, to a familiar position. Just enjoying the league, because it is the best, and enjoying all the big games that'll be coming from now through the holidays into the, early portion of next year. Our team just won't be playing in any of those games, even though the news on Jaden was positive last week. And even the commentators during the game, sort of in their conversations with Quinn, you could tell that, you know, Vilma and Kenny Albert's takeaway after their conversations with key Washington personnel, the head coach in particular, is that
Starting point is 00:39:48 Jayden's going to be fine. We'll see. I don't think he'll be back for Spain. and probably not for the Thanksgiving weekend Sunday nighter against Denver, but we'll deal with the question of, you know, should he or shouldn't he, when he is cleared to begin practicing again. Again, my bookie is the place to bet on sports. It's where I recommend going. Use my promo code, DC Reload. So just a couple of other quick observations.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Here's my deal on the two-point conversions. I wouldn't have wasted my two-point conversions, especially the last one. They were down 30-2-10 when they attempted the first one. You don't need to do it at that point, you know? I know you want to know what you need moving forward if you were to make a miraculous comeback, but that's late in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:40:40 I wouldn't be using up my two-point plays right now. I know they have different ones for different games, but these are things that they've been working on since the summer. Their two-point packages and their two-point plays save them. You don't need to use them in a game like this. And at 32-10, kick the extra point, 32-17, and if for some reason you get it to 32-24, then you can break out the two-point conversion on the, you know, the attempt to tie the game. I mean, how ridiculous is it to even consider that that was a possibility. And then the one down 41 to 16 with five minutes and
Starting point is 00:41:15 53 seconds left, what, to cut it to 17? Don't waste those plays. And don't put your quarterback out there. He got sacked, you know, on that first two-point conversion there at the end. You know, take them out of the game. Put your kicker out there. Kick the extra point. So, you know, I should have probably included that on the things that I didn't like list. Did you see that Dan Campbell was apparently calling plays? Apparently, that's a new thing for Detroit, him taking over for offensive coordinator John Morton. I thought that was interesting. You know, in a game in which you want to shorten the game, you want the game to be a game in which your defense is out on the field for the least amount of plays, Washington could
Starting point is 00:42:03 have run the first quarter clock out, and it didn't. And I don't know why it didn't. I don't know why they didn't just, you know, let the, they ran two plays at the end of the first quarter when the clock was running after a first down one yard run and they could have run out the clock and they didn't like shorten the game you know it's at that point it's 14 to 3 you know let's let's let's you know let's not run plays that we don't have to meaning that Detroit could get the ball back even sooner um what else did I have on this injuries Amos ankle looks like that could be the latest of
Starting point is 00:42:53 potentially, you know, games lost. Rodriguez hurt his shoulder. Louvo got hurt, came back. Jonathan Jones got hurt. Did he come back? I'm not sure. Kehoe took that vicious concussion on a tackle on special teams. Oh, here's the last thing that, oh, I wanted to mention
Starting point is 00:43:12 just that I was glad Chris Rodriguez got the first opportunity. If they had put a bill out there, fine. I like the way Rodriguez runs. I thought he ran okay today um i don't even know what his final numbers were they probably weren't very good because eventually you know they ran it as much as they could uh he got six carries for 16 yards oh boy i thought it was maybe a little bit better than that um yeah overall 27 rushes for 93 yards uh mariotte i think had three scrambles two designed or options so that would have been 25 rushes, 24, you know, called pass place. Okay, better for Cliff. But I, I love the way
Starting point is 00:43:57 they came out, other than, you know, differently from last week, right? They came out with heavy personnel and they said, we're going to try to run the football, at least early in the game. All right. Last thing. If you noticed, you know, Washington, all their 15-yard penalties on touchdowns and PATs, et cetera, and Detroit taking those penalties, well, they took the first one on the two-point conversion when they went for two. That was the pain ejection, and that gave them a 22-3-3 lead instead of 21-to-3. But there's a loophole in the with the new kick-off rules. And we saw some of this last year, but we've seen more of it this year.
Starting point is 00:44:36 So if you kick the ball out of bounds on a kickoff, a lot of people think, oh, the other team just gets the ball at the 40. That's not the rule. The rule is the other team gets the ball. ball 25 yards from where it was kicked off. So when it's kicked off from the 35, the normal spot, and it's kicked out of bounds, you get the ball at the 40. When it's kicked off at the 50 after a 15-yard penalty, you get the ball at the 25-yard line. So if you noticed, Detroit intentionally kicked the ball out of bounds so that Washington would get it first and 10 from
Starting point is 00:45:17 their own 25 instead of allowing a return instead of a touchback that would bring it out to the 35. The 25 is a pretty good, you know, for the kickoff team, a pretty good starting field position. If you can hold the team to the 25 yard line. So that's a bit of a, you know, teams have figured it out where, you know, that's why, you know, stupid, you know, penalties when the other team scores and you think it's a throwaway penalty. because it's a PAT coming up. No. When it gets assessed on the kickoff,
Starting point is 00:45:52 you've got to take advantage of that if you're the kickoff team, 25 yards from the kickoff if you kick it out of bounds. They're taking that penalty intentionally, intentionally, so that the other team starts 25 yards from the 50, which is their own 25. All right, that's it. One of the worst defensive games, I think I've ever seen my team play.
Starting point is 00:46:17 against a great offensive team with a limited skeleton crew for the most part I get all those things I get it it just was so lacking in any sort of resistance and just looked wrong it looked abnormal how open people were I hope Quinn watches this one and comes up
Starting point is 00:46:40 with a stern answer somewhere at the very least it should be I'm a head coach I'm a defensive head coach, and my defense is horrible. And it's been horrible since I got here. And now it's worse than it's ever been. And I like Joe, and I don't think it's all on Joe, but I'm going to take this MFER over and try to fix it myself. Now, can he? Probably not, given the personnel, but I'd like to think that they'd look a little bit more organized. All right, that's it. I'm done.
