You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
Here's Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I am here.
The show's presenting sponsors, Windonation.

com.
Mention my name for a free no-risk estimate.
We got several reviews in here, Tommy, that I want to read.
The first one will make you happy.
Lewis from Norfolk for people who aren't from there.
Man, I love y'all's podcast.
When Tommy was talking about how much the NBA stinks,
I was in my car saying, preach, Tom, preach.
Way too many cry babies to take it seriously.
That from Lewis, who gave us five stars on Apple.
Now, you did tell me right before we started to record the pod today
that you watched a little NBA last night.
Yes, and I did that purely for you.
You don't have to do it for me.
It's sometimes better when you don't watch and you act like you know what you're talking about.
Okay, okay.
And I watched the second half of the Cavaliers game.
Yeah, the worst series going right now.
Yeah, the Celtics, Celtics Cavaliers.
And I watched the first quarter of the Mavericks, Oklahoma City game.
That game was fabulous, actually, in the second half and down the stretch.
The Thunder came from 14 down and won the game with Shea Gilgis Alexander,
absolutely taking the game over in the final six minutes.
Yeah, I would not have thought that Oklahoma City would have won that game based on what I saw in the first quarter.
Did you watch any of Yokic this past weekend?
Not really.
Okay.
That's the player that you...
I did text you.
Didn't I text you on Sunday?
You sent me something, and I said,
and I said, just watch Denver, Minnesota tonight,
or watch Baby Rainier, I think I told you.
Watch.
I texted you what Ubi Brown said about the greatest guards of all time.
Right.
Okay, U.B. Brown, who's watched more NBA.
I love Hube.
And anybody alive.
I love Hubey.
But he's like 90.
Right.
And his four greatest guards are Jordan, Magic, Jerry West, and Oscar Robertson.
Right.
So I texted that to you, and you texted back, instead of UB from 15 years ago,
watch Denver, Minnesota tonight.
Yes.
Or Baby Rainier on Netflix.
Right.
Yes.
Well, I've seen Baby Rainier actually already.
You did see it.
Okay, well, we'll talk about that maybe later in the program.
today. What you sent me, it looked like Hubey from like 1995 or the year 2000. It looked like
he was 25 years old. And I love Hubey. He's one of my favorites. God, he's still calling games,
and he still is as sharp as ever. He really, you know, Legler called a game Friday night. He called
Minnesota, Denver Game 3. Legler, to me, in terms of just pure basketball knowledge and
You know, X's and O's.
He's as good as there is.
But Hubey's excellent at that, too.
He's always been one of my favorites.
But you didn't watch Minnesota, Denver on Sunday night, right?
You chose to do what?
Rockford Files Reruns, Cojac.
What did you do?
I don't remember what we watched on Sunday night.
I don't recall.
It's just that Yokic is the player that you actually can identify with a little bit
and that you have said that you like a lot,
and he was just so incredible Sunday night.
And so were Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray and others.
But anyway, well, you know what?
I appreciate the effort, Tom.
Honestly, good effort last night.
You picked the worst series going right now, Celtics Cavs.
And after one quarter of the best game of the night,
you turned it off because it was probably time for you to go to bed.
I was up until 1248 watching the end of Thunder Mavericks.
Actually, that's not true.
1248 was the end of Inside the NBA, which I watched.
I love that show.
How you doing?
Been a crazy couple of days off of rookie mini-can.
Yes.
Yes, it has.
Where the number one topic of a conversation were two feathers on a T-shirt.
Yeah.
That Dan Quinn wore.
And I tell you what, I'm sure Dan Quinn probably thought coming in that he knew how damage this fan base was,
but he didn't really know until after this weekend.
You think that's a sign of damage because people have a fan base that is debate.
Basically, you have a fan base that I think a majority of them hate the name that exists now.
And then within that group, there's a significant portion that want the name to go back to what it was before.
Right.
So you have a product where people hate the name of the product.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't think he truly really grasped it until this weekend where he wore this T-shirt, probably not thinking twice about it.
And, you know, you would have thought he had the map to find the Holy Grail on that T-shirt.
See, some of what people read into it.
Hold on.
Let's get inside that second feather.
There it is.
You take a left and then a right and then two lefts and four more rights, and you're there.
It was so wild to watch it unfold.
Well, I mean...
You know, and they're not going to change the name back.
They're not going to change it back to the old name.
No, they're not.
That's not happening.
They're not.
He could wear an Indian head dreds out, and they're not going to change the name back.
No, it's not going back to Redskins.
Sorry.
I mean, so many of you off of yesterday's radio show and even the podcast just keep hammering me for saying it's not going back to the Redskins because you still think there's a chance.
And I mean, I guess, and I said this yesterday, Tom, if they did go back to Redskins, it would be a massive boon for them.
Like, it would be a huge, you know, revenue jump.
and people would be back in.
The problem is that the league and corporate sponsors and the activists,
and they're just not going to invite that controversy back,
no matter how much it would actually work from a business standpoint
in terms of getting people back into the fold.
It's not what you pay $6 billion for to invite that level of controversy.
see right out of the gate. Now, I still think there's a chance they will change the name and or
the branding. And when I say and or, it could be both or it might just be the uniforms at some point
that go back to the way they used to be. I don't think the logo will come back. I don't. But, you know,
some people believe that there is a better chance. And, you know, we'll get to this story about
the Senator Danes from Montana, who is apparently going to block the RFK site in the Senate
until the team honors the Walter Wetzel, Walter Blackie Wetzel from the Blackfeet Tribe,
the guy that designed the logo.
We'll get to that at some point.
But yeah, I don't, it's not going to happen.
What was amazing to me about the T-shirt is for the people that actually think this isn't
a thing.
You know, you get a lot of people out there,
not a lot of people,
but you get some people out there
that are incredibly dismissive
of any time the name topic comes up.
And they're like,
it's just not important to that many people.
You're way overdoing it on this.
J.P. Finley had a million and a half views
on the first tweet of the T-shirt that went out.
Of course it's a thing.
Yeah, but, I mean, it's just stunning.
I think it's a sign that there's so much repair to be done with this organization.
And an outstanding couple of seasons would fix that, not just winning seasons, but a couple of outstanding seasons.
And those are a couple years away, probably, if there at all.
You were going to ask me something.
No, I don't think so.
Oh, okay.
You started to say, let me, I think it's, I think a superstar player like Jaden Daniels and contending for Super Bowls is certainly going to bring a lot of people back.
I still question whether or not a certain group will ever come back with the name being what it is.
And I don't, I also understand the challenge of changing the name.
Like, you could change it to red wolves or hogs.
There's still going to be people that push back on that.
Yeah.
But there is something.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think you understood that more than anybody in the market, the impact of changing, the process of changing the name, period.
Yeah, it's, it was never going to be easy.
I think there's no way that they could have made it right after 2020 and before 2-2-22.
So despite the fact that it feels like a couple of outsiders came in and handled the rebranding,
I don't know that, you know, a couple of insiders.
Insiders would have gotten it completely right either.
But it does, you know, the way it happened, the way it rolled out, you know, the attachment to Dan
And even though I don't really think Dan had anything to do with commanders.
I think he was long checked out as Jason Wright and Will Missilebrook kind of put the whole thing together with their branding experts.
I don't know what'll happen.
I don't.
Tommy, yesterday, it just kind of occurred to me that, you know, the Senate has to vote on this stadium thing tomorrow.
that it's very possible that Josh Harris and Mitchell Rails aren't disclosing anything
because they really haven't about the name until the path is cleared for a potential stadium on the
RFK site.
You know, once D.C. has, you know, control of that land with the amended and the extended lease
and they can negotiate a deal there. Maybe we'll get an update. Remember last week I said,
I think it's time for Josh Harris to give us an update. Maybe it's not time for him to give us an update.
Maybe he's got to wait on politicians to get this piece of land back to D.C. officially so that they can have their best shot of returning to D.C.
Because the RFK Stadium site is obviously a priority.
Yes. However, I still have not changed my mind. I don't think that's where it's going to.
to be. I think it's going to be right next to where the existing stadium is. But I recognize
that RFK is the preferred site probably among fans and probably among ownership as well.
A couple of feathers on a T-shirt.
Dan had no idea. I don't think he had any idea. Somebody sent me... I don't think he did.
Yeah. I mean, this is what I think a lot of us were told is that
it was certainly not something that the team organizationally planned.
Could it have been something that Dan Quinn knew with kind of a wink-wink he was going to generate some attention with?
I don't think so.
But somebody sent me, and Doc's going to be on the show, I think, tomorrow with me.
But Doc, I think, suggested that this was Dan Quinn welcoming back all of the alums.
It was his way of saying,
I got your back.
I don't think that is what happened,
but maybe he,
you know, maybe there was a little
dumb like a fox at work.
Oh, my God.
I mean, I just don't think
like there were signals
being sent
with his apparel.
I just think somehow somebody gave him the shirt
and he said, oh, this is good.
I'll go with this today.
I think that's what happened to.
I do.
All right.
Anything else on Feathers?
How excited were you about rookie minicamp, though?
I mean, the only news, really, is that Johnny Newton's got two bad feet.
Yeah, that's not good.
I don't know that it's good either.
I mean, we'll see whether or not he's ready for training camp,
but I do kind of feel like they may have been caught off guard.
I mean, I listened to every sound bite from Quinn, and he really kind of pushed off this idea that they were caught off guard, but he didn't say it definitively.
You know, he didn't say, oh, no, no, we knew about the other foot.
We thought there was a possibility he would need this surgery.
We were prepared for that.
It's not really what he said.
And I do wonder whether or not some other teams knew about it, and that's why he dropped a little bit.
I don't know.
let me ask you this
let's just
for the sake of argument
say that was a mistake
or that the team didn't know
every
fuck up of the new administration
going to be magnified
because of the
history of chaos
and failure
of this franchise
I don't know
I can treat it as its own entity
I don't know how I
other people feel. I mean, if they...
I mean, I think they'll always be for a while, business as usual, meet the new boss,
same as the old boss kind of thing. I don't feel that.
I don't feel that. I think it's separate by itself, but I think that, you know, they don't have a,
they don't have a lot of room for failure to be judged. Yeah, I feel like it's a new day and a new
group and that, you know, again, benefit of the doubt in part just because I don't think there's
any possibility that it could ever be as bad as it was.
But there's no guarantees that, you know, it'll be great.
I think, you know, one of the things you kind of learn from a rookie mini-camp surgery on a
guy that didn't even participate in rookie minicamp is that it's way too early to give out
A-plus grades on drafts two days after the draft.
You got to wait three years.
You got to wait at least a year or two.
Hopefully Johnny Newton becomes the player that everybody thinks he can become.
But it's, you know, and I'm sure these surgeries are just to, you know,
I was reading a little bit about this, you know, Jones fracture.
They're very repairable.
You know, people have had these surgeries and they come back to their 100%, hopefully.
But it did seem like they may have been caught off guard a little bit.
and we'll see whether or not it impacts the beginning of his career.
I mean, that's not what's most important.
What's most important is that he has a long career here, not just a great start to a career.
But, man, draft grading is the dumbest thing ever.
It's the dumbest thing we do.
I don't do it, but we talk so much about these rookie players and these draft classes,
and you just have no idea.
Did you see what Jared Mayo said about Drake May, the new coach of the Patriots?
Yeah, I did say he was not giving out eight-plus grades to his new quarterback, was he?
No, it's, I actually don't have much of an issue with the way, what he said about Drake May,
but this got a lot of attention over the weekend.
Jared Mayo is the new head coach in New England, and after rookie minicamp,
when asked about Drake May, quote, he has a lot to work on, a lot to work.
on. But I have no doubt that he will put the time in. He was here all night trying to get on the
same page as everyone else closed quote. I mean, you know, in this day and age, after all of the
conversations about the quarterbacks leading into the draft, people are like already
writing off Drake May. Like, that's insane. I know. And to be honest with you, it's exactly the way
I think Belichick and winning organizations handle players that haven't proved anything.
It's like you don't oversell them.
Now, maybe he undersold him a little bit there when he said, you know, a lot to work on,
like emphasizing this dude's, he's got a long way to go.
But a lot of people said that about Drake May anyway.
That was the number one drawback of May is that there was a lot of footwork and mechanics.
and he was going to need a year before he plays.
And Jacoby Brissette is, you know, in New England, and we'll see if it works out.
But, God, man, I mean, we got to give, on the quarterbacks, you've got to give it more than three years sometimes to figure it out.
But, yeah, I think that underselling it is the best way to go.
And that is totally from the Belichick book, too.
You know, Jared Mayo is a Belichick guy.
That is straight from the Belichick book.
But I think it's a little bit early to compare Daniels in May
since they haven't played games yet.
Right.
However, you know, you think that draft grading is the dumbest thing in a world.
Some people think mock scheduling is the dumbest thing in the world.
Yes, including the guy who created the mock schedule.
He thinks it's dumb, too, but he keeps doing it.
We did it last week.
for those of you that missed it.
I may repeat it
tomorrow since the schedule
got delayed. The schedule comes out tomorrow.
Yeah, the schedule comes out tomorrow.
So if you missed it last week,
I will probably run through it
real quickly tomorrow.
But I did it last week
because there was an expectation there
briefly that the schedule
was going to come out on Thursday night.
The Monday night opener.
I would love for you to get six
right because the doors would
come off. It would just be insane. You'd be getting calls to be interviewed about how you knew the
schedule. No. No, nobody cares that much. Oh, yeah. Everyone cares about everything these days.
We have the... You know how the schedule, you know, for years, for decades, the schedule was made up by a mom and
pop operation, literally, a husband and wife in their house for 30 years.
They did the schedule.
Now it's done by Amazon, Amazon Web Services.
Is that true?
Yes.
I'm not making it up.
I don't make stuff up.
That's true.
Don't ever ask me if that's true.
I mean, I had John Orand on the radio show last week, and he said Howard Katz, you know,
longtime broadcast guy and said he's been pretty much the guru behind this for many years now.
Now, they use a lot of technology now that they didn't have years ago.
Who was the couple doing it out of their own home?
What's that?
I don't know that story.
I have to look it up.
But I'm sure if you look it up, you'll be able to find it.
I actually would be interested in that story, so I will look it up.
I'm making a note to myself right now.
Look up, schedule couple that did it from their own home years ago.
I would have loved to have been involved in that process.
They did release a couple of more games.
Cleveland, Dallas is a Sunday afternoon Fox game,
so that'll be Tom Brady's debut with Kevin Burkart on Sunday, September 8th,
as part of the Fox doubleheader.
Kansas City, Cincinnati is week two, and the Monday night opener was just announced the Jets with Aaron Rogers at San Francisco to open up the season.
Remember last year the Jets opened up at home on Monday night football against Buffalo, and Aaron Rogers on play number four tore his Achilles.
So Washington Giants for the opener is still.
still in play because we haven't had either one of those teams announced for any of the prime
games in week one.
All right, we've got some other things to get to.
Tom wants to circle back to Tressway, Jaden Daniels, and number five.
And we will get to this story that I think Sam Fortier and others broke yesterday about
this senator that's going to hold up the RFK bill unless the team acknowledges the old logo.
We'll get to that more right after these words from a few.

Many of you have probably heard of Harry's razors and shaving products, maybe even from this podcast.
They've been an occasional advertiser over the years.

I think it goes back to the first shipment of product that they sent me before the first
time they advertised on the pod, maybe four.

decision. So yesterday, Sam Fortier wrote a story, and I think others had it too. I don't want to
discount others that may have had a similar story, but I read it in the post. Sam 48 put it out
late yesterday afternoon, early evening. Story titled, Senator will block RFK site bill unless the team
honors the family of logo creator. And the story goes like this. Senator Steve Dan,
a Republican from Montana intends to block legislation that would give the district greater control
of the RFK Stadium site until the Washington commanders honor a Native American family that help
design the team's former logo. So let me try to net this out. Tomorrow, the Senate is going to
hold meetings and potentially a vote to approve what the House voted on and approved at the end
of February, which is the RFK Stadium Revitalization Act, which basically will give that land
in an extended and amended lease back to the city, which will allow them to negotiate with the team
to bring the team back to D.C. Now, Tommy's pointed this out many times. He still thinks it'll
end up in Maryland, and there's no deal that's done between the team and the city because of
the Senate passing this.
This just gives the city the ability to do with that land what they would need to do to attract the team.
They can't negotiate if they don't have control of the land.
Exactly.
And so this guy, Steve Danes, who is on this committee, is threatening to hold it up.
And apparently just one person could hold up this bill on Wednesday or the voting on the bill on Wednesday.
he wants the family of Walter Blackie Wetzel.
Walter Blackie Wetzel was a member of the Blackfeet tribe.
He helped create the actual Redskins logo that was in place from 1972 until the team dropped, you know, the logo and the team name.
So a couple of things that Sam 48 wrote about.
He said, according to prepared comments,
the senator is not calling for the return of the former team name, which has become increasingly
controversial, especially in Indian country. The other thing is the team did meet, the Washington
commanders team did meet with Ryan Wetzel, Walter Blackie Wetzel's grandson. The team put out a statement
yesterday saying, quote, we have spoken directly with the Wetzel family and are working
collaboratively to recognize Blackie Wetzel first contributions in creating our former logo, closed
quote. Ryan Wetzel, the grandson, called the meeting his first with the team under new ownership,
quote, fantastic, closed quote. And then Fortier writes, Sam writes, he was optimistic the team
would figure out how to capture his family's contributions in a satisfactory way, way,
maybe with a plaque or another or other installation.
He said that while he understands the name will never come back,
he hopes the team could wear the logo on throwback jerseys.
Meantime, a spokesperson for Dane said that even though the meeting went well,
his plans for Wednesday's hearing remain unchanged.
I don't know why they would be unchanged.
The team just met with the Wetzel family.
Didn't they just do exactly what he was calling for?
You wrote about this guy a few years ago.
Two years ago in 2022, I was the only one on this.
I talked to Wetzel's son, Donald Wetzel.
And he was trying to get this done with the team in 2022.
What they wanted to you do is use the logo for their own
purposes to promote, you know, the history of their people and also to call attention
the issues that plagued, you know, the Indian nations.
And his name was Donald Wetzel, and basically he said they want to repurpose the logo
for use by advocacy groups, work in the solve issues that are destroying the Indian
nation. The logo was debuted in
1972. It was inspired by Blackie Wetzel,
the former president of the National Congress of American
Indians, who showed team officials an image of
Chief Two Guns' White Calf, the last chief
of the Piccany Blackfoot Indians who passed away in 34,
and whose image Blackie Wetzel believe should be part
of the team's newly designed symbol.
So this may not be as simple as we think it is,
but the team took a big step forward here
under new ownership by meeting with the family
because at 2022, Donald Wetzel told me
he tried to set up meetings with Dan Snyder and Jason Wright.
They never heard back from him.
You know, he said, we're being stonewalled by the team.
You know, because they dismiss him.
This was a guy.
You know, just like any other guy that tried to greet the team.
You know, go, go, you know, pack your bags and leave.
Don't bother us.
And new ownership is smart enough to recognize that, you know,
just listen to what these people want.
It's not, shouldn't be that hard to deliver.
There should be some kind of a grievance that they can reach.
Now, the sense of urgency with the Senate is that, you know, in June,
I think all the senators leave and go to summer camp.
Yeah.
So if you don't get this done soon, who knows when it'll get done?
Because in fall, you're going to have the elections to deal with.
You know, there's a part of Sam's story that I thought was interesting, but maybe it isn't, but I'll ask you.
He writes last week, D.C. officials lobbied legislators to attach the RFK bill to the large,
unrelated Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, according to two people with knowledge of the
situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The bill passed late Thursday with dozens of
amendments and policy riders, but the RFK language was not part of it. Do you think that DC officials
wanted that bill attached to a larger bill? I think they refer to it as a rider because they're
concerned about it passing on its own tomorrow?
maybe. I mean, I don't know what the logic would be to try to sneak it through, which it sounds like what they tried to do, is to sneak it through the back door somehow.
It would really be a shame if this really held it up. I can't fathom that the team won't be able to come to some sort of agreement that would be satisfactory. It's incumbent on them to come up with that, you know?
They need to do this.
To basically, you know, convince this one senator to vote for it.
Yes.
You said something, though, that's so true.
Like, it's just not that much effort to listen, to meet with.
By the way, this is, you know, they're not calling for the logo to be returned to the team,
for the team to use it as the team logo.
They just want it acknowledged.
It sounds like the meeting went well.
Obviously, they have incentive to meet because this one senator is threatening to hold it up if they don't work something out to acknowledge the former logo.
And there's no risk to acknowledge the team's past.
I mean, there are a handful of people that will scream and yell about, you know, acknowledging that the logo that they, you know, that they believe is somehow insensitive or, which really, I don't think the logo is ever.
been an accusation that the logo's been racist or insensitive. But I think the team is smart.
And I think in the past, you know, they probably could have avoided a lot of this if they had been
proactive like, you know, the Florida State Seminoles and a lot of the, you know, teams that have
kept their Native American imagery and names. I know there's a difference between Redskins and
some of the other names. We've talked about this a million times. The others aren't dictionary
defined, insensitive in some dictionaries anyway.
But yeah, all you had to do all along was reach out and, you know, talk and help, by the way.
Yeah, again, you know, a lot of teams, the football team isn't the only one, but they were really bad at this.
A lot of teams are in the no business.
They say no all the time, you know?
somebody, you know, some guy off the street wants to talk to them, they say no, okay?
These people wanted to talk to them about the logo.
They had a legitimate case.
They just said, no, we don't want to hear it.
You know, the new administration should be in the yes business to some extent.
Okay, should be willing to listen to pretty much anybody about anything, given how screwed up this franchise is that they paid $6 billion for.
It's also possible that Josh Harris and Mitchell Rails would love to work the old logo back into some sort of throwback uniform.
You know, I mean, I guess all of that is probably there's some level of risk, but I don't think there's that much risk.
Again, the name is not coming back.
The old name is not coming up back.
As much as I would love it, it's not coming back.
I personally don't think the old logo is coming back.
I do think still a total brand and rebrand is possible.
You know, either a name change combined with a brand change or maybe just, you know,
some of the branding to go with commanders changes.
Like, just give us back the old uniforms for crying out loud.
Maybe we can go with gold pants one week.
Anything else on this?
We'll see what happens tomorrow.
I bet it passes.
This was supposed to be kind of a foregone conclusion when the House passed it back at the end of February.
Everybody felt like this would be a no-brainer for it to fly through the Senate.
So is your guess that it will?
My guess is it will.
This guy, Danes, will be pleased with whatever message he wanted to get across,
and they'll pass it tomorrow.
I'll tell you what, if it's not, it's a bad sign for how.
how this team does business, because there should be a sense of urgency to get this done between
today and tomorrow. So everybody's happy.
All right. We have more to talk about, including Tom wants to get back to the number five
jersey issue. We'll talk about the show that I watched over the weekend, Baby Rain Deer,
and more right after these words from a few of our sponsors.
Hey guys, most of us are interested in our mental and physical well-being to a certain degree.
And with that in mind, I'd like to welcome and introduce a new sponsor to the podcast.

Shelly's. Well, Shelly's back room. You know what was interesting. We had our event. It was a week
could go on Monday, the Cigars and Curveballs Fundraiser there. And one of the great things about
doing it there was that it introduced a lot of people who have probably never been to Shelly's before
to Shelly's for the first time. You know, some people, it was their first time ever at Shelly's back
room. And it's the kind of place that once you go and you see it, you say, wow, this is great. I'm coming back here.
okay and that's what will happen to you if you take a visit down you know on a 1331 f street northwest
if you're walking downtown doing some sightseeing uh you know looking for some lunch a great place
would be shelley's back room they have great outdoor seating and indoor seating with a with a first
class ventilation system okay one of the things about the uh the uh the uh auction
that we did that night of the fundraiser, if it was in the big room, you know, part of the
problem of hearing our great auctioneer, Christopher, was that it was kind of hard to hear over the air
ventilation system.
Right.
That's how good the air.
Now, you don't notice it when you're just sitting there, you know, but it was another
layer of sound that is almost invisible to the ear, except when you're, you're, you're, you
trying to make announcements to a whole crowd room full people.
But I'm saying that to indicate how good the air filtration system is inside as well.
I tell you what, it's the kind of place that you can bring your mother on Mother's Day
and she'll have a good time.
How's that?
That's impressive.
Mom, we're going to a cigar bar for Mother's Day.
Hey, honey, honey, what I want for Father's Day is I want.
want to go to Shelly's for Mother's Day.
That's a good one.
You can find out more at shelley's backroom.com.
So what did you want to say about the number five jersey handover from Trisway?
It wasn't much of a handover.
I think Trisway actually did pretty well in this transaction.
I don't know if the details will ever completely come out.
let me just say that he didn't do it just for nothing or just for a pair of tickets to an Oklahoma LSU game.
But I thought we talked about this last week, but you said that you've had a change of mind on this subject.
So go ahead.
I've had a change of heart.
I think that I read some more on the team's website, commanders.com, about how this unfolded.
and they should have never put Tressway in this position in the first place.
This is similar, not the same, but similar to the Dwayne Haskins, Joe Seisman number seven, Jersey controversy.
In that, you know, the team, instead of telling Dwayne Haskins, no, you can't have number seven, pick another number, they left it up to Joe.
and there's no good way for Joe to say,
no, I don't want you to wear the number.
It comes off as selfish and petty,
even though that's probably,
that's likely what he thought.
That's what a lot of us thought as well.
Tressway is not Joe Disman,
but he's a 10-year veteran of this team.
And some years,
he's been the best player on this team as a punter.
and he should not have been put into position
to have to make this decision himself.
This is a decision.
If you really want to change the culture of this team,
you don't let rookies say,
I'd like a veteran's number.
That should not happen.
It should be a moot question
that if a veteran comes in here
and he has your number,
pick another number.
Create your own legacy.
because according to the team's website,
a way originally declined to give it away,
right out of the gate,
because of connection he had with the number.
So his first reaction was,
rightfully so,
no.
I mean,
I'm a veteran.
I've been here 10 years.
This is my number.
I don't want to give it up,
but he came around.
You know,
according to the website,
quote, here's a quote from him.
It's a very big piece of humble pie to give up this number,
way said.
But I feel like it's a bite I should take.
Either way, it feels like the right thing.
He shouldn't have to take a bite of humble pie.
It shouldn't have been an issue.
You know, a rookie who hasn't even stepped on the field and thrown a path yet,
has taken the number of a veteran.
Right.
It should happen.
Yeah, I mean, I said, like,
last week, Tressway certainly did not have to give up the number. He was, like you said,
not only a 10-year vet, you can make the case. He's the greatest punter in franchise history.
You can make the case he's the greatest number five in franchise history. Now, you can't compare it to the Joe
Thysman jersey thing. Not that you did. I know, not that you did. But just for everybody out there,
it's not comparable because Joe's jersey was a protected number.
You know, his jersey was not supposed to be given to anybody else.
And so that was a different situation.
But Tressway had earned, I think, the right to say no.
So I'm with you on that.
Now, if ultimately, and it happens all the time in the NFL,
jerseys get sold or deals are made,
and there was an agreement or perhaps,
perhaps even multiple agreements between Jaden Daniels and Tressway over the transfer of the number.
And they're both happy with it now.
I'm okay with it.
You know, there is one, there are a couple of things here at work.
Number one is there aren't many numbers, quarterback numbers on this roster available.
You know, zero was taken, one was taken, two was taken, three was taken, four was taken, five was
taken, six was taken, seven's protected, eight's taken, nine's retired. Ten would have been the
first quarterback number available because Kaz Allen has it, and he's a guy that may or may not
even make the team. So, you know, now, you know, with the Jersey number situation changing a few
years ago, where defensive players and receivers can wear single-digit numbers, you know,
they're grabbing all of those numbers. Frankie Louvo is going to wear number five.
four. Dante Fowler Jr. is going to wear number six. By the way, you know, I didn't talk
about this or maybe I just barely mentioned it. The rookie from Michigan, the corner, Mike Sanra still,
did you know that he took Diami Brown's number two? He's a second round pick, you know,
and Diami Brown is not trest way. I understand. But in many ways, that's even a little bit more
strange, that Diami Brown, who's been here, what are we going on year three?
Year four with Diombe Brown, whatever it is, year three,
that he's been wearing number two,
and a second round pick came in, and they gave him number two.
I don't know, and I have no details as to whether or not Sanry's still paid for it
or, you know, whatever it is.
But so number one is just, you know, the issue with numbers
and having limitations on the available numbers for a quarterback.
And then number two is Trusway.
may feel, and I don't know if this was part of the discussion at all,
Tressway's the third highest paid punter in the league.
He's coming off one of the worst seasons of his career.
Now, he was injured.
He was, you know, not healthy last year.
And it's very possible that if the team had been in a salary cap, you know,
crunch situation this year,
he would have had to restructure or perhaps would have even been released by the team.
I'm not suggesting that his career is about to end.
I have no idea.
Punters can last until they're 38, 39 years old, and he's 33 going on 34, I think.
But maybe some of that was at work, too, in this conversation?
Maybe.
I don't know.
Maybe do it, do it, do it, be a go-along to get-along kind of guy.
Well, self-preservation.
Self-preservation could have been at work for him as well.
Yeah, that may have been to come into play.
But let's face it, if he said no, everybody would have known about it.
Well, yeah, because Jaden Daniels would have been wearing a different number.
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah.
You know, Caleb Williams.
That's all.
Not a big deal.
Well, I actually, I took calls last week on radio saying, do you think he needed to give it up?
And people were really mixed on this.
And I think it is my position from the jump was he certainly doesn't have to give up the number or, you know, create an agreement where he gets something back for giving up the number if he doesn't want to.
He's earned that right.
But I think, yeah.
You know what's funny?
What?
Between the jersey and the T-shirt, the number one topic of conversation last week about this team was laundry.
Yeah. Well, it's better than Top Golf.
It's better than Top Golf draft visits.
Anyway, all right. Anything else on that?
Nope, that's all I got on that, buddy.
So Kara was the other night, she said, did you hear about this baby reindeer?
I go, I have no idea what you're talking about.
She said it's like the number one show on Netflix.
Everybody's talking about it.
And she had just started to watch episode one.
So I just said, yeah, I'll give it a shot.
Just rewind it to the beginning and let me watch it from the beginning because she was like 15 minutes into it.
And four hours later, and it was very early Sunday morning, I came up for air, all right?
So I'll ask you first.
You said that you've watched it, that you and Liz watched it, right?
What did you think?
Yes.
I liked it because it was like a.
train wreck where you're watching the train comes down the track.
You're watching a guy getting hit by a train over and over again and never getting
out of the way.
You know?
Yeah.
Okay.
Today's a new day.
I'm going to step in front of the train again and get plowed over.
It was almost difficult to believe.
Let me just give everybody who hasn't seen it, because I'm going to guess that a lot of
you haven't seen it. This is a seven-episode Netflix, 30 Minutes of Pop, a story. I would probably
categorize it as drama or maybe like dark comedy, whatever you would categorize it as. But it's a
story and it's a true story played by the guy that this happened to. You know that, right?
that basically that's who this happened to.
He's playing his own story.
He's playing his own story.
This guy was a wannabe comedian who was also working as a bartender who was stalked by a woman.
And it is thrilling, weird, funny at times.
frustrating at times
frustrating at times
because why you
you thought that something bigger
was about to happen
no
because he couldn't get out of his own way
yeah yeah true
yes yeah including at the
very end of this and we won't give it away
I did think that
he was outstanding
in playing this guy
Donnie Dunn which is not
you know his his name is
Richard Gad and this is
his actual true life story.
And he's playing, you know, a fictionalized character of himself, but it's, but it's real.
The stalker, she was phenomenal.
Her name is...
He was great.
Her name is Jessica Gunning.
I thought that really both of them were incredible in their roles.
And I don't know, it was one of those things where I would recommend it.
I liked it.
I think, you know, for me at the end, until I read the actual real-life version,
I thought it was clearly setting up for a season two.
Did you feel the same way or not?
No, I did not.
Okay.
I did not.
I think there's always so long, there's only so long you can play this tune.
At that point, you know?
Yeah, I mean, maybe seven,
episodes of her is enough.
Yeah.
But it was like his, you know, onstage, you know, confession of what he had done and what his life had
become was pretty riveting, that one episode.
That one episode, yeah.
Yeah, it was.
And what was riveting was that didn't seem to change anything.
No, it didn't.
It didn't.
No.
I don't want to give stuff away.
But that seemed like, okay, a catharsis, you know.
Yeah.
He's washing his hands of this.
It's over.
No.
Yeah.
There's a lot of, there's a lot of, there's a lot going on with this guy.
I mean, there is career, you know, confusion, sexual confusion.
There's just, there's so much self-loathing.
There's just, he's actually a fascinating character,
and he did such a great job of playing him.
But yes, he just can't get out of the way of the wall
that he keeps running into over and over again.
Yeah.
I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't put on any list of great series I've ever watched.
It's very digestible because it's seven quick episodes, like 30 minutes each.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And again, it's worth watching.
Always say, what the hell?
It's this guy doing.
What's he doing?
And to say, what the hell am I watching?
Because I was, you know, from the very beginning, I was expecting more.
Like, I was expecting more of a violent ending, you know, or more violence along the way.
I mean, she was a nutcase of the highest order played so beautifully by this woman.
Frightening.
Frightening.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And look, I think part of the allure of it, and I knew this going in, and most people know this going in,
it is based on a true story.
Yeah.
I didn't know it's going on.
It wasn't a true story.
I think there would have been a violent ending if it wasn't a true story.
Right.
Didn't you get stalked once?
Not really unless, no.
Didn't you tell me a story years ago about something happening with somebody,
or was it one of those dreams that you had to get stalked?
No, it was a fan.
Look, I don't want to go into this, but there was a good.
guy who is a big fan of ours, who I used to have a convertible, and I'm driving down the highway,
and then all of a sudden I look to my right, and there's this guy, and he's snapping pictures
of me while he's driving while I'm driving my convertible.
Was this one, was this when we were doing the show together?
Yes.
You know, have we ever talked about this in great detail? I don't think we have, other than the
me just remembering you saying something about this.
Because do you remember there was this one very devoted listener that showed up at every single live event that we ever did, which is not unusual and it's so appreciated?
But then he also showed up at a couple of places where I was socially.
I told you about that, right?
I think so.
you know, don't you hatch.
What?
This is territory.
I don't want to walk down.
Yeah, I mean neither.
Me neither.
You should read some of Tommy's notifications on Twitter.
You should read some of the emails I read about both of us.
Not just Tom.
Both of us, trust me.
All right, are we done for the day?
I think we did our job today.
Well done.
Baby reindeer on a scale of five-star scale?
Okay, five-star scale, I'd give it three and a half stars.
I'd give it four.
That was entertaining and weird and fun at times.
I'll give you an example.
What?
I can go back and watch the Fargo series any season over and over again.
I have no interest in ever watching baby reindeer again.
I totally agree with that.
Like, I would go back and watch season one, season two in particular, and season three, too, of Fargo.
I've told you I've not gotten to the Chris Rock season yet.
So I've only watched the first.
I'd watch any one of those three seasons.
I think the Kirsten Dunst, Jesse, what's his name, you know, from Breaking Bad?
It's actually
Plimons.
Yeah, Plymouth.
Plemons.
You know, they're married.
They're married in real life, actually.
I didn't know that.
Yeah.
That was...
He's a tremendous actor.
Oh, he's excellent.
He's so good.
Okay, we're done.
I will talk to you on Thursday.
Back tomorrow with Doc.
All right, boss.
