Starting point is 00:00:00 You don't want it, you don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show, here's Kevin. And it's picked off. Intercepted by Jack Jones. On the first play from scrimmage in overtime. In a game between two pretty bad teams, the team that made the biggest mistake was likely going to lose the game. And there it was, in overtime, interception.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Too bad for Marcus Mariotta because he had another pretty good game until that throw. Window Nation is the presenting sponsor of this show, 86690 Nation or WindowNation.com if you need new windows. I'm in for a quick post game following the 16 to 13 overtime loss to the Dolphins in Madrid. A crazy game, really, for a 16. to 13 game. Both teams made plays that were both good and terrible. You know, down the stretch, there were a few times that you probably thought that's the bad play that will decide this game. The fourth and goal missed by Washington with six minutes left when Ertz stumbled out of his break on a play that likely would have scored and has scored
Starting point is 00:01:22 in the past. The Sanra still muffed punt seemed like game over in that moment. He was back there, of course, because they lost another player in a season of lost players. Jalen Lane hurt early in the game and wasn't back to field that punt. Bad job by Sanra still on his first NFL punt return attempt. And then I thought for sure Mike McDaniel would and should kick the field goal on fourth and goal at the one with a minute 44 left. Man, this league has gone all in on not taking points with field goals and going for fourth downs, even when it doesn't seem to make a ton of sense in context. The context at that point was everything. The first, second, and third in goal plays were dominated by Washington's defense. Washington had already stopped an earlier fourth
Starting point is 00:02:15 in goal play. Kinlaw had blown up the third in goal play. Achain got hurt on the play. And Washington on the flip side had scored just one touchdown in the game. One. And not having any time outs, I thought McDaniel should have kicked a field goal instead of being concerned that he'd lose in regulation to a touchdown in the final minute and a half, especially after the way the first three plays on first, second, and third goal went. But the interception and overtime was the last mistake and the biggest of the game. Mariota had been on time for the most part, really, of the game.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Good decisions most of the day, not a perfect day, but he had given them another professional effort, a good game overall, but that throw in overtime was late. It was off, and it was probably the wrong decision. Add it all up, it cost them a chance in overtime to snap a losing skid, which now extends to six. in a row. But this one, like we said, heading into it, you know, this one had a chance to be a much better game overall. The dolphins were a much less difficult test than their three previous games
Starting point is 00:03:35 against Detroit, Seattle, and Kansas City. The dolphins just aren't that good, especially on defense. So this was a game at least that was more enjoyable to watch because it wasn't over at the end of the first quarter. And the skins had chances to get this one. They made plays defensively for the first time in really two months. They made plays on defense. I'll go through the list in my game take. But sacks, huge fourth and goal stops. The offense was in rhythm a lot more than it's been. I thought Cliff had a pretty good day. They were in a ton of heavy personnel and ran the ball well. And that really opened up a lot for Marioita and the past game. Mariotta made some really good throws, especially some of those seam balls.
Starting point is 00:04:23 And then he had a massive moment on that 43-yard scramble on third and eight. But ultimately, too many mistakes when they pretty much have little to no margin for error on this team right now. And the mistakes cost them. Forget about the fact that the defense stood up after the Sanra still fumbled punt, which is true. Not being able to take possession of the ball near mid-fif. field in a tie game with just over four minutes to go was a killer. There were penalties again that hurt. Late substitutions that cost them timeouts that hurt. A lot of that can probably be explained by the number of new players that are out there, of course, but they've had an issue
Starting point is 00:05:06 with late substitutions going back to last year. What also cost them in this game, just too many easy plays for the opposing offense. We knew that that would happen against Miami's offense. The defense again made plays which were impactful in which we haven't seen the plays that the defense made today for the last, you know, basically two months. But it was also a defense that gave up too many easy runs, too many easy pitch catches. Miami rushed it for a buck 69 for five and a half yards per carry. You know, Tewatt was just, you know, 14 of 20. That's 70%, 70%. by the way, for 171 yards, but he had two flat-out drops by his best receiver, Waddle. Washington made a ton of good plays, though, that gave him a chance to win this game,
Starting point is 00:06:00 and a bunch of bad plays that cost them in the end, and now they sit at 3 and 8, and this season is now officially a lost season if it wasn't already. They didn't bail on today's game. They were ready for it. They gave great effort. They played with a ton of urgency, but none of that is going to save this season. This season has been lost for a while now because of the players that they have lost. Washington led the league coming into this weekend with the most lost starter games of any team in the league, and they'll increase that number when they next take the field after their by week on Sunday night, November 30th,
Starting point is 00:06:41 against one of the best defensive teams in the league, Denver. All right, let's get to my game take. What I like, didn't like, and a lot more. We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors. This episode is brought to you by prize picks. Football season, guys, is so much better with prize picks. Guys, personal experience with a product that I want to tell you about, it's Zbiotics and their product called pre-alcohol. Let's face it, after a night of drinks, most at our age anyway, don't bounce back the next day like we used to. You either have that choice the night before of, do I have a drink or two or do I pass
Starting point is 00:09:10 because I don't want to feel badly the next day. Well, there's a sure-fire way to wake up feeling fresh after drinks with friends. It's with pre-alcohol. Zbiotics pre-alcohol was invented by Ph.D. scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking. I've noticed a difference the next day after using pre-alcohol. You drink pre-alcohol before your favorite drink for me, Tito's soda, lime, or a beer. You wouldn't believe how great you feel the next day. With spring now here, more opportunities exist to celebrate warmer weather with a product like Zbiotics pre-alcohol.
Starting point is 00:09:49 You're on the patio with friends, you're on a vacation, you're at a wedding, you just finish up a round of golf and you want to hang out and have a few with your buddies. Starting point is 00:10:43 One to the right. Yeah, Matt Gay is probably going to end up in my game take here momentarily. The missed 56-yarder at the end of regulation was an opportunity to snap the five-game losing skid, but instead that skid reaches six games. They lose to the Dolphins 16 to 13 in overtime in the first game ever played in Spain. This segment of the show is brought to you by Window Nation. If you've been thinking about new windows, act now. Starting point is 00:12:19 Let's get to my Game Take. Pay attention. Here's Kevin's Game Take. All right, what I liked, what I didn't like, and a few other observations. We'll save those other observations for the final segment, because there's a lot to the game, including Marcus Mariotta's performance. have him on the good list. I don't have him on the bad list, but I'll evaluate his performance and give you a quick grade here, at least in the immediate aftermath of the game. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:49 a lot of you reached out to me during the final drive of regulation. I checked Twitter right when the game ended. Couldn't believe how many of you thought that they really screwed up the final drive of regulation. I don't think I agree with that, but I'll walk you through it during this game take. All right, what did I like? Well, first and foremost, this was the first game in a few months now where the defense made big plays that were legitimately impactful in the game. And they made several of them. Jacob Martin Sack forced a field goal on a third and two on Miami's second drive of the game. Jonathan Jones, his corner blitz on a third and five on Miami's third and final drive of the first half forced a punt. Oh my God, the other team had to punt in the game.
Starting point is 00:13:43 In the third quarter, the fourth and goal at the two that Miami decided to go for. Bobby Wagner in coverage, zone coverage underneath against Waddle gets his hand or fingers on the ball, gets a pass breakup, and that stops a score. By the way, the play before that was the Louvre stop on Gordon on the third and goal, which was an outstanding defensive play. And then in the fourth quarter, you had the third and long sack of Tua. That followed, by the way, one of two big drops by Jalen Waddle. And then, of course, the fourth and goal stop on Ollie Gordon with a minute 44 to go. I don't know why McDaniel went for that. I thought that that was something given the context that was not the right decision. But by the way, the third and goal,
Starting point is 00:14:32 stop by Kinlaw on Achen. Achein actually got hurt on that play, but the fourth and goal stopped by Goldman and Louvre just outstanding. The defense made five, six, seven plays in this game that were truly impactful and, you know, were reasons why they had a chance to win the game. Red zone defense is number two on the list of things that I liked. One for five for the dolphins, two, four, and goal stops included in that. So look, the defense, and I'm going to get to what I didn't love about the defense today, which isn't a surprise, but the defense stepped up against a lesser opponent. Okay, that's 100% true than the last several that they have faced.
Starting point is 00:15:22 So I don't know how much Quinn's influence was a part of this, but the bottom line is results are results. The defense made six or seven plays in this game that if they had won the game, you would have pointed to them and said, that's why they won the game more than anything else. Next up on the list of good. I thought the overall game plan offensively was a solid one. It's not just that you have to move the ball and score with this defense, but you've got to keep the clock moving and you've got to take time on these drives. And you do that usually, not always, but usually by running the football. And they did today. 33 for 172.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Now, 43 of those were on a really good Mario to 3rd and 8 scramble. But the ability to run the football, especially with Chris Rodriguez, who was 15 carries, 79 yards, 5.3 yards per carry. A lot of the time with heavy personnel, you know, extra offensive linemen, like Steve Souter called out on Wednesday, he said, why three tight ends? Why not two tight ends and an extra offensive lineman? And Trent Scott, remember, was inactive last week. He was inactive again today. They used Coleman. Now, Sinit was out of the game. Another player that wasn't necessarily expected to be out, but was out and inactive with an injury. But they went with that heavy personnel, and I thought Rodriguez took advantage of it. The ability to run the football today was huge. I thought it allowed Cliff to, to manage the game. Well, part of that was calling the number of runs he did, but I think he got him into his, you know, bag, so to speak. He certainly, you know, had the idea going into this game
Starting point is 00:17:10 to get his best playmaker offensively, Debo Samuel, a lot more in the way of touches, seven catches on eight targets for 74 yards, including that touchdown on the delayed middle screen. You know, in terms of the offensive players that really stood out, Rodriguez and Debo were the skill position players that really stood out. Debo, by the way, had that, you know, third and two wildcat run, which was kind of vintage Debo with the yards after contact, same with his touchdown, where he kind of muscled his way into the end zone. Rodriguez, you know, he's deceptively good. I think he's got better vision and better quicks and better cutting ability, then maybe, you know, it looks like he's going to have that 17-yard run on
Starting point is 00:17:57 their second drive of the game. It was a second and 11, I think. Really good cut. Great vision, good cut. Decent acceleration. He's, you know, definitely a yards after contact guy. 5.3 yards per carry. I actually didn't want to see Kroski Merritt get as many carries as he got in the game. I think Rodriguez is their best volume runner. And, you know, he had 15 and, Crosky Merritt had nine. I mean, maybe take five of those nine, give him to Rodriguez to get to 20 at 5.3. And then he's over 100 by himself. So, you know, right now, yeah, I think Rodriguez is the guy this offense needs right now. I like Bill Crosky Merritt. I like him. But I like Rodriguez for this team right now a bit more. So offensively, good game plan, the standouts, skill position wise, Dibo and Roder. Rodriguez, they're on my list of good. Third down conversions are on the list of things that I liked from this game. Second half, third down conversions, because they started one for five and finished six of 13. So that means they went five for their last eight. And that was in the second half.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Two for ten last week against the Lions gave them no chance. Not that they had a chance to begin with. Six for 13 means you're staying on the field a lot more. They had just one punt in the game. It was a very low possession game. They had three possessions in the first half. I think eight for the game, including the one in overtime, which was a one-play possession. They won time of possession by nearly three minutes. They ran 10 more offensive plays than Miami did. So third down conversions specifically in the second half is on the list of good. Kick and punt coverage on the list of things that I liked. You know, that opening kickoff landed in the landing zone. It didn't look like it. I got to go back and look at that. But it did and Miami fielded it in the end
Starting point is 00:19:57 zone after it hit in the landing zone, which meant they started their opening possession of the game from their own 20 yard lines. So good job by Matt Gay there. Not much else. I think one of his kickoffs was a touchback. Maybe two of them were. Madrano had a huge hit on the punt coverage on the one punt three yard return, the rookie from UCLA with a really good special teams tackle. Washington's been excellent in this area. since Larry Izzo arrived as the special teams coordinator. The kicking problem has been the special teams problem. And today, by the way, a muffed punt return after losing Jalen Lane.
Starting point is 00:20:36 And that leads me into the list of things that I did not like. The bad list. We start with, yeah, the two turnovers, minus two in the turnover margin category. This team can't win in the minus area in turnover margin. margin unless they're playing a horrific team. Miami's not a good team, but they're not the worst team. Minus one may have been, you know, enough for them to win the game. Minus two was too much to overcome. Another game without a takeaway. And look, the two turnovers, the last one, of course, ball game pretty much. Although, you know, it was at the 33 yard line. The defense could
Starting point is 00:21:14 of stopped, you know, Devon Achein from going three carries, 22 yards into chip shot field goal range. But that one was, you know, that one was the killer. The last one and the one that really cost them. Bad throw, bad decision, late, the whole thing for Marcus Moriota on that throw. And the first one, the fumbled punt return by Sanry Still, he's back there because he's the backup punt returner. So, you know, they must have thought that he could do it. It hurts that they lost lane clearly. The thing about that muffed punt, they didn't give up points, but they let the clock churn, and then obviously they got the fourth down stop, and then they took over from their own two. But the missed opportunity is the field position for your
Starting point is 00:22:00 offense with just over four minutes to go in the game at your own 43 or 44 yard line in a tie football game. You know, you've moved the ball enough during the course of the day. That, you know, that stop, that punt, you field it there, you might be able to run the clock out and kick a short field goal to win it. Maybe. You know, so it was the missed opportunity on offense in that, you know, portion of the game, which was crucial that hurt even though they ended up getting the stop on defense. Two turnovers in the game, minus two in the turnover margin leads the list of things I did not like. Followed by number two on this list, Matt Gay. Two missed field goals, one from 51, one from 56, with 10 seconds to go in regulation.
Starting point is 00:22:47 You know, he came into this season being a guy that had not kicked longer field goals well recently in his career. And these two hurt. You know, the 51-yarder in today's game is yesterday's 41-yarder. The 56-yarder is yesterday's 46-yarder. Kickers are making these kicks regularly, and he missed both of them. The first one just barely will get to. to that. The last one pretty badly from 56 yards out. Next up on the list of bad. Red zone offense. O for three, the opening drive for them, false start on Rodriguez on the fourth and two,
Starting point is 00:23:26 which they were going for. Maybe they get stopped and it doesn't matter. But false start forces the field goal. The second red zone stop was right before the field goal that made it six to six late in the first half. You know, there was an interesting moment there for Mike McDaniel. the Miami coach. Washington had two penalties on one play. And instead of a fourth and five, he took the third and 18. It wasn't like he was knocking them out of field goal range at all. They were in the red zone. But he took the penalty. Washington ended up getting a chunk of those yards back on the third and 18 and then kicked the field goal. But typically coaches are going to take the fourth and five. Maybe he thought Quinn was going to go for fourth and five, and he wasn't
Starting point is 00:24:10 confident that they could stop it. The last red zone stop was the incompletion to Ertz on fourth and goal. Ertz stumbles coming out of the break, you know, unfortunate. He is, you know, that's been a really good play for them with Jaden, with Marcus, and that's a touchdown if he doesn't stumble coming out of the break. Next up on the list of things that were not good in this game. So the defense made a lot of plays in this game. No question about it.
Starting point is 00:24:40 I went through that list on the game. list of good. But it was also outmatched by Miami's offense for the most part. Be thankful that the dolphins didn't run the ball more, especially with outside zone runs. The first three plays of the game, my God, 11-yard run for Achein, 14-yard throw to Waddle. They're two best players. The players we talked about on Friday all week, these are the two players you've got to focus on. Then Devon Aachen, a 23-yard run. on outside zone. 48 yards, three plays.
Starting point is 00:25:15 He had 50 yards on five carries at the end of the first quarter, at the end of the first quarter. And then, by the way, did not have that many carries until the fourth quarter and in overtime when he really carried the load for them. The dolphins, you know, they only had 311 yards, but it came on just 54 snaps. They averaged nearly six yards per play, not the eight yards per play that Detroit averaged last week,
Starting point is 00:25:42 but still too many. They had 169 yards rushing in this game. Achein was 21 for 125.7 yards per carry. As a team, though, they were 5.5 yards per carry because Ali Gordon was nine carries for 45 yards in the game. Yeah, you know, I said on Friday, you got to hold them to like just, it can be barely less than five yards per carry,
Starting point is 00:26:11 but it can't be the Gibbs nine and a half yards per carry of last week. And they couldn't do that. Acheon 5.5, 5.7 yards per carry in the game. The dolphins, you know, helped out a lot when you think about the defensive results, like Waddle dropped two passes. He still, though, average 17.3 yards per catch on just three catches. But the dolphins helped out. The two drops, the miss,
Starting point is 00:26:41 by Tua in the red zone for the tight end, although the explanation was that maybe the tight end ran the wrong route. I don't know. He was wide open and it was an incomplete pass that led to a field goal. You know, what else was there? The opening drive, they had a false start on a fourth down that they were going to go for that they then kicked a field goal on. McDaniel made the decision to take six points off the board with two easy field goals in a game in which the context was I thought field goals were good. Yeah, the defense made plays in the game. The two fourth down stops, the sacks, we went through them all.
Starting point is 00:27:23 And by the way, maybe Dan Quinn had something to do with it. But Miami helped out too, and they got big plays. This defense is not like good after today. You know, the opponent was different. They gave up a lot, but they made some plays, finally. You know, in overtime, after the interception, how about, you know, not allowing Achein to go for 22 yards on three carries for chip shot field goal range? I mean, come on. What's next on this list?
Starting point is 00:27:57 I'll finish it up with the bad list with this, because it's kind of a bucket of a lot of things that were, you know, problematic today for them. Penalties, late substitutions, late substitutions, which led to needing to, needing to, call timeouts unnecessarily. You know, on the opening drive, a late substitution forced a timeout on a first and ten. Later in that drive, there was a false start on the fourth down that they were going to go for by Rodriguez. So instead, they ended up kicking a field goal to tie it at three. Kinlaw had an off-sides in the third quarter to make it second and five instead of second and ten. By the way, at the end of the third quarter, Kinlaw jumped off sides, but the third-quarter clock had hit
Starting point is 00:28:41 three zeros. So they went to the fourth quarter without that penalty being called. You know, they had a play with two penalties. We mentioned that one, the one where McDaniel took the third and 18 instead of the fourth and five. They had two false starts on a drive. Remember after the fourth and goal stop, the first fourth and goal stop for the dolphins when they took over deep in their own territory, Ertz had a false start. I think Rodriguez had the other one. The fourth and goal at the two before the earths stumble and incompletion, they had to call a timeout for a late substitution. You just can't waste timeouts like that. I'm sure a lot of it is because of the, you know, the unfamiliar personnel that is out there.
Starting point is 00:29:26 You know, I think that's a big part of it. But they've had the late substitution needing to call timeouts or just barely getting plays off in time. They've had that issue going back to last year. uh yeah so that wraps up the list of good and the list of bad um but i've got a lot of other observations including sort of grading out marioto mariotta can't be on the good list when you throw that pick um in overtime the way he did uh and he wasn't perfect today either but i thought he had some really really good plays uh in the game and then i will walk you through that final drive of regulation i had maybe one
Starting point is 00:30:08 issue with it, which we will get to after these words from a few of our sponsors. The holiday season is approaching, and guys, I've got a good gift idea for you. Starting point is 00:34:43 See website for full details, restrictions, and important safety information. Marioita, keeping one downfield, and it's off the head of the antenna receiver, Chris Bourne. That was the play right before Matt Gay's missed 56-yard field goal at the end of regulation. You know what Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma on the call of today's game didn't say about that particular play, or if they did, I missed it, is what a great throw that was by Marcus Marioata. That was a drop in the bucket throw. If that's Terry McClure, it is first down at the five-yard line or where, it is. They're sprinting up. They would have had plenty of time to clock the ball and Matt
Starting point is 00:35:35 Gay's coming on for a true chip shot walkoff field goal. Chris Moore tried to catch it with one hand. I have no idea what he was doing in that particular spot. I think he could have gotten two hands on it, but that was a phenomenal throw, and they glossed right over that. Now, they were preparing for the 56-yard field goal, but still, what a great throw by Marcus Mariotta. This final segment of this post game is brought to you by MyBooky. Starting point is 00:37:28 I want to start with the final drive because a lot of you tweeted me and I didn't see it until the overtime started. You were very upset with the way Washington managed that final offensive drive after the fourth down stop with a minute 41 to go. Somewhere around there. Minute 41 exactly.
Starting point is 00:37:48 I think after the play, it was a minute 41. I think the play began a minute 44 and Washington took over with a minute 41 from their own three-yard line. Because remember, Ali Gordon on the Goldman and Louvre stop, lost two yards. So it went from the one to the three-yard line. So Washington takes over a minute 41 to go, tie game. They don't have any timeouts left.
Starting point is 00:38:14 They have used all of their timeouts left. And by the way, they use their timeouts the right way. On defense so that if Miami scored, they had plenty of time to get the ball back can go down to either kick a game tying field goal or potentially, if McDaniel and company is right in that fourth and goal from the one and they end up scoring, Washington would have needed a touchdown in that spot. But they take over minute 41 to go, own three yard line needing a field goal to win the game. Let's start with this. It's pretty aggressive on first down to drop Mario to back deep into his own end zone when, you know, earlier he had avoided, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:57 a safety with a crazy unload of a football getting outside the tackle box to avoid intentional grounding in the end zone. You could have had a holding penalty. You could have had a sack. You could have stopped the clock, you know, with an incompletion. But why not be aggressive? They're three and seven. They've moved the ball pretty well. This is not a good defensive team. and they drop them back on first down, 28 yards versus zone coverage to Debo, over the middle, out to the 31-yard line. Here they go. I thought they were immediately smart right out of the gate, meaning you don't have to go super hurry up now. You don't want if you get stopped to leave Miami with any time. You just need to get into field goal range, reasonable field goal range, not 56-yarder for this kicker,
Starting point is 00:39:45 clearly, which they ultimately didn't do. But the second play that they ran from their own 31, they snapped it with a minute 15 left, was a run to McNichols. I had no problem with them running the football here. They're taking their time. They're not in field goal range yet, but why not try to catch them in a light box
Starting point is 00:40:06 and rip off a 5, 6, 7, 8-yard gain? Or with McNichols, who knows, maybe it's even more. And then, you know, they're going, you know, after that one-yard gain, it's second down in nine now. Miami calls a timeout. They call their second timeout in the game after that one-yard run, because now if they can get a stop, they want a chance to get the ball back. So on second nine, Mario to throw short to Earths underneath for three yards. Miami burns their third timeout, and now it's third and six. They haven't done anything so far that I have an issue with. Nothing.
Starting point is 00:40:45 you don't have to be in super hurry-up mode. Miami's going to use their timeouts as they did. You don't have to throw on every play. You know, you're in your two-minute needing a field goal, also knowing that if you don't get a field goal, the game's going to go to overtime unless you mismanage that final drive. So on third and six, what a play, right? To Jacoby Jones.
Starting point is 00:41:09 Who? That little in and out and Marioita, you know, hits him in stride. a 25-yard pickup. He goes out of bounds, but that's fine. They're at the Miami 40-yard line. He couldn't have stayed inbound. He's trying to get as many yards as he can. And so after that 25-yard play,
Starting point is 00:41:29 there are 57 seconds left in your first-and-10 at the Miami-40. Now, this is the play that I think some of you have an issue with, maybe. They ran the ball on first-and-10 at the Miami-40. somewhat light box, you know, and it's McNichols on first and ten. If you want to say, look, they're now with 57 seconds left, they've got plenty of time to get good field goal range, you're going to use the run game. How about Rodriguez instead? But McNichols is their third down back.
Starting point is 00:42:03 He's their best pass catching back. You know, how about Bill? Well, I don't want Bill in the game there. I don't want him to fumble. I had no problem with the run. The super minor, minor pet peeve is that, okay, now that you're in a position where you can run the football with 57 seconds left, and you can, you know, maybe on that first down, it's, you know, Rodriguez with the field spread. Because, you know, you want to get to, for Matt Gay, what do you want to get to? You'd like to get to the 25, but you certainly don't want to get, you know, be at the, where they ended up being, you know, at the 38. yard line. You want to get to at least the 33, 32, 31 yard line. You want it inside 50 for Matt Gay.
Starting point is 00:42:48 You might get it. You might bust a run on first and 10. I had no problem with that call. Minor, minor, maybe it's somebody else other than McNichols, but McNichols has been good this year. It's been very good. Then, I'll tell you, the next play. So they're letting the clock run. Okay, okay with that. You know, you don't, again, all you're looking, for is that one chunk throw, get up, clock it, and you're in good shape. That was the corner blitz. I think it was Fitzpatrick that came on the corner blitz. Man, that was dangerous. And Marriota did not throw a great ball to Chosen. It was, maybe it was Fitzpatrick in coverage. I forget. But there was a corner blitz. He just barely gets it away. And Chosen doesn't battle,
Starting point is 00:43:35 I don't think well enough for the ball. And it's almost picked. But now with 22 seconds left, third and eight. What you're really looking for is on third and eight, you've got to throw the ball now beyond eight yards. You don't have to, because if you got a five-yard throw, you can rush the kicker on when you snap with 22 seconds left. You can. You can't spike it if it's fourth down. Obviously, you can't clock it. They drop Mario to back. I'm sure they would have liked something in the intermediate range. He takes the shot for Chris Moore and he drops one in the bucket. Dropped it in the bucket. Great throw. Incomplete. And now you've got Matt Gay with 15 seconds out there trying a 56-yarder. The biggest gripe that I have is that when they got the first
Starting point is 00:44:25 and 10 at the Miami 40, they didn't complete another pass or they didn't bust a sizable run on first down. I just didn't have any massive issues with that final drive. Somebody tweeted, me and said, I mean, what are they doing? They're totally mismanaging the clock. You don't run the ball. You do, you can run the ball. Absolutely you can run the ball. And they just didn't get any yards on the runs, you know, but in those situations, how often do we see in those situations when the other team, you know, is a nickel and they're expecting the throw that you get a chunk run? They just didn't get it. And then they didn't get on their second and eight and third and eight. they didn't get a completion, you know, and they were forced to kick one from 56.
Starting point is 00:45:15 I just didn't have a massive problem with that final drive. All right, Marcus Mariotta, man, where do I start here? I got all these plays. So look, he once again gave them a professional effort. There was a lot of good. There was more good than bad. The bottom line is you can't be on the good list when you throw an absolute soul-crushing pick in overtime. He wasn't perfect. He got away with some stuff,
Starting point is 00:45:46 but I thought along with Cliff, the two of them, I thought they managed the game pretty well. You know, the opponent was the weakest defensively they faced in a while. That helped. You know, he made some really good plays. I'm just going to go through, I marked down just all of the plays he was involved in. Some of them are good. Some of them are bad. So, you know, first drive of the game. You see him check to a run for Rodriguez against a light box on a second and eight, and Rodriguez picks up like seven and a half, which gave him the third and one, which, by the way, is the next play on this list. They ran quarterback power with Mario da and he got stopped. He actually got minus one on the play, and that set up the fourth and two where Rodriguez
Starting point is 00:46:31 Falls started and they kicked the field goal in their opening drive. But I thought Marioita, you know, you got a veteran quarterback. He saw the light box. He checked to that play. That was a smart play. Next up on the list. Second drive, that second and 11 throw to Ertz versus Zone coverage. Good pass pro too on that. You had the, you had the RPO throw to Ertz where it was incomplete. I thought Ertz was hit in a defenseless manner. But they picked up the flag. I thought it was a defenseless hit. looked that way to me. I know it wasn't helmet to helmet, but it was defenseless. The second and 10 on their second drive, he throws
Starting point is 00:47:13 high to Samuel. There's an illegal motion. They decline it. He was a little bit off on some throws today. He wasn't perfect. That was an example of that. And then the third and 10 after that, he takes a sack on third and 10 for a six-yard loss that forces that first Matt Gay field goal to be a 51-yarder. And by the way, it missed just barely. If it had been, if he had been able to unload it and not take that sack, it's probably a good field goal.
Starting point is 00:47:42 You know, who knows what would have happened there. But that extra, you know, six yards of field position hurt on Gay's field goal attempt. We know he's fine inside 50, not great outside 50. That was not a great play by Marioota. Their third drive, he was high on a throw to Debo, but that, That was the play in which they called defensive pass interference on just an uncatchable football, not to mention it wasn't pass interference. So, you know, some of what I said, Washington, you know, got some breaks today.
Starting point is 00:48:20 That was one of them. But that was a high, bad throw. The next play, by the way, he nearly gets picked on a throw where he's high and off on a first and 10. But then, you know, he comes back versus the blitz on a quick throw to Chris. more. He throws very good seam balls. I think that was 18, 19 yards. Play action throw to Ertz for 15. The play action was very effective today, in part because they ran the ball. There was a second and six quarterback draw that was called. He slid too early, which set up
Starting point is 00:48:52 the third and one. And then, you know, they did pick it up with Rodriguez on third and one with the heavy personnel. What's next on the Marioita list? Go to the second half. Their second offensive drive, the, oh, the waved off defensive pass interference against Chris Moore was the right call, right? Because it was uncatchable. They called DPI against Miami, but that ball was way uncatchable to him. But the one to Samuel was uncatchable, and it wasn't DPI, and they let that one stand. So we'll take that exchange. The third and nine checkdown to McNichols.
Starting point is 00:49:38 Man, McNichols makes a good play, but it's a good checkdown too by Marioada rather than getting into trouble. The first and 15, man, from deep in their own territory, when there is quick pressure, he nearly gets sacked, he gets out of it, and then he just, you know, he just gets out of the tackle box somehow and just chucks it out of bounds. It wasn't even a throw. It was a heave.
Starting point is 00:50:02 It was a chuck. and he saved the team two points. That was a really good play. That was the play, by the way, he got banged up on. And Josh Johnson had to come in on that next play, the third and 15, and hand the ball off. There was the third and eight, well, the third and eight, you know,
Starting point is 00:50:22 43-yard scramble is just vintage Marioita. He's just an excellent runner. This is where this system, that's a scramble, I understand. but this is, you know, a great system for him, and that's a great decision, quick decision, and he's off to the races for 43 yards. Of course, that play ended with the fourth and goal miss. What's next on the list?
Starting point is 00:50:48 I mean, the out of the end zone on the final drive of regulation to Debo, the third and six to Jones, really great schemed up play. You know, and then, you know, he gets away with one on that corner, Blitz on the final drive, but then the throw to more at the end, I mean, that is a great throw. Great throw. They just don't have any good receivers right now that could pull that in. And then, of course, came the interception in overtime. You know, there's some misses. There's some really good plays. Overall, I, you know, the backbreaking pick is going to probably for Souter downgrade him to a C. I thought he was,
Starting point is 00:51:31 a B plus for a lot of the game, so I'll give him a C plus for the game because of that interception. But I thought Mario-Ota, as he has done every single time he has started or even come in for Jaden Daniels, has given them a professional effort and given them a chance to compete on offense. Look, again, the opponent today, not what the opponents have been recently. What else do I have on this list? Yeah, Chase Edmonds, another new player in the game, you know, he's back there on kickoff. So he had a good kickoff return. He had one really good kickoff return.
Starting point is 00:52:13 I think it was a 29 or a 30-yarder. Yeah, I guess that's it. That's pretty much it. You know, 16, 13, overtime loss. And, you know, they're not scoring enough. This is kind of like the Kansas City game in which they had great effort. They had great enthusiasm, great urgency. They moved the football, but they kind of hurt themselves.
Starting point is 00:52:38 They played better defense, but ultimately they gave up too much. But, yeah, all told, you know, a game between two, you know, much less than average teams right now in the league that just turned into a bit of a crazy game. All right. I think that's it. I probably will add to this at some point tomorrow or on Tuesday. Back tomorrow on radio. And we'll see whether or not it makes sense to put out a pod late tomorrow after Quinn speaks. We'll see. I mean, they're heading into their bye week. And actually, I don't even know if we're going to hear from Quinn tomorrow now that I think about it. Because remember what he said about Jaden Daniels, the next update would come after the bye week. so that'll be, you know, a week from tomorrow. All right, done for the day.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Done for this post game. Three and eight, just a lost season for sure. Back soon.
