You don't want it.
You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheen Show.
Here's Kevin.
Window Nation is the presenting sponsor of this podcast.
Call them at 86690 Nation or head towindonation.com if you need new windows.
Jay Gruden in the next segment.
Jay joins me every Friday.
Jay's NFL lock of the week, four and two through the first six weeks of the season.
So stay tuned for that.
We'll go back and revisit the Baltimore game with Jay.
We'll also preview the Carolina game with him,
get his thoughts on the matchup against the Panthers.
We'll go around the NFL a little bit as well.
What an NFL Sunday.
The 1 o'clock window includes some heavyweight matchups,
Minnesota and Detroit in Minnesota, Green Bay hosting Houston.
And then in the late afternoon window,
you get the rematch of the Super Bowl between the Chiefs in the 49.
Sunday night you get the debut of Devante Adams with the Jets at Pittsburgh.
And then Monday night, there's actually a double header.
The first game is Baltimore at Tampa Bay.
It's week seven already.
It flies by.
This is really when we start to figure out, you know, what these teams really are.
And there are some really good matchups.
There are also this weekend a lot of banged up football teams.
So keep that in mind in some of these matchups as well.
Injuries always a factor.
We saw that in last night's Thursday night matchup between Denver and New Orleans.
The smell test in the final segment, if you want it.
I'll also have in the final segment some thoughts on Daryl Green,
whose number 28 will be retired on Sunday.
Tommy and I talked a little bit about Daryl on the show yesterday.
I've got more on Darrell Green to end the show.
Two quick smell test picks rather than having to wait for these.
If you're going to listen to the whole show, for those of you that care,
I did give out Florida State plus three tonight against Duke
and Oklahoma State plus 10 against BYU.
And I'll have the rest of the picks in the final segment.
All right, Sunday, Landover, 405,
Washington should beat Carolina.
Not something we're used to saying around here,
although I think it's happened more than we think it has.
I actually put together a list of some games that I think we said,
or many of you said, this is, should win.
I'll go through that list here momentarily.
But this game is actually the first game since 2018
that they've had this kind of disparate.
in an early to mid-season matchup in terms of their record versus the opponent's record.
Washington is four and two. Carolina is one in five. The last time we saw anything like this
was in 2018, the Alex Smith team that started five and two. But they were four and two going into
the meadowlands to face the giants, and the giants were one and six on that day.
day. Washington had started four and two. The Giants had played seven games. Washington had
already had their buy week. But remember, that year was the last time any team started five and two
around here. 2018. I kind of felt all along that it was a bit of fools gold because they were not a
very good offensive football team. And the teams that they played that were pretty good,
like New Orleans and Atlanta, they kind of got run out of the building against. I think this is a
completely different situation. But that was the last time this early in the season, Washington
had a good record and faced a team with a bad record, and the perception was should win game,
and it was justified. This is a game based on the records of the team and the way the teams
are playing that gets labeled by everybody as a should win game. Now, that means nothing in the
NFL, as we know. I mean, the biggest underdogs in the first four weeks of the season,
they won outright against the heavily favored teams. Any given Sunday, we understand that. But
for this team right now, the game Sunday should win. Let me go through a list of games that I
put together. These are games that I think in the moment, a significant majority of the fans
thought should win. Last year,
Last year alone, I think there were two should win games.
That Chicago game on Thursday night football, remember the team was two and two,
and they had just lost that thrilling overtime game in Philadelphia, 34 to 31.
Washington was a six-point favorite over the Bears last year on Thursday night football,
and everybody was saying should win.
Now, I do recall my position on that game, I gave the Bears out as a smell test,
pick and said they can absolutely lose this game. And they did. They got beat 40 to 20. A few weeks later,
against Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants, they were seven and a half point favorites. And I think
everybody was saying this is a should win game. Not to break my arm, patting myself on the back,
but that was another game. I had the Giants in the smell test and said this should not be
labeled as a should-win game, and they lost to Tommy DeVito and the Giants Outright 31-19.
Different team last year. Obviously, I didn't think at any point that that was a good football team
last year, and it got worse as the season went on because the defense kind of revealed itself to be
bad, and they just weren't very good offensively after the first couple of games.
In 2022, they had just beaten Philadelphia in a massive upset on Monday night football.
and they went to Houston to face the Texans.
The Texans were 1, 7, and 1.
We said about that game, this is a should-win game.
I remember specifically saying this is a should-win game,
but being worried about it,
I think I probably gave Houston out as a smell test pick,
but Washington won that game, 23 to 10.
Houston was terrible and Washington was starting to play better.
They had upset Philadelphia.
And look, that season, the team was 7 and 5 in December.
And at the end of that season, the infamous Cleveland game at home on New Year's Day, Washington was only a two and a half point favorite.
I did give Cleveland out.
I remember that as a smell test pick and said, we should not label this as a should win game.
And they lost that game 24 to 10.
And remember, Ron Rivera afterwards did not know that they could be eliminated from the playoffs later on that day.
Then you go back to, then look, 2021, 2020, 2020, there were 2019.
There were no should win games.
I went through every single game.
There wasn't any game that we said they should win it.
In 2018, the game that I mentioned, the giant game at 5 and 2 should win game.
And they won that game, 20 to 13.
By the way, they were only a one-point favorite.
I'm pretty sure I gave the Giants out and lost that one.
But that was 4-2 against 1 and 6.
That was a should-win game and the biggest disparity early season between their record as a winning record and their opponent's record.
And then in 2017, they were a 12-point favorite over the 49ers early in the season as a 2-2 team.
The 49ers were in their first year with Kyle Shanahan.
That was the last time they were as big of a favorite as they are on Sunday against the Panthers.
They were 12-point favorites, and they won by two.
But that was a game we went into.
Remember, they had started that season.
They dominated the Raiders on Sunday night football.
They had beaten the Rams on the road, and then they had that very close Monday night
loss against the Chiefs.
And then they came back home and were 12-point favorites over the Niners.
They won, but barely.
But we definitely went into that game saying should win.
2017 Thanksgiving night when they played the Giants, they were seven and a half-point
favorites, and we said they should win that game.
And they did 20 to 10.
And of course, in 2016, the season finale, New Year's Day, 2017, against the Giants as four and a half point favorite, as nine point favorites, excuse me, as nine point favorites to clinch a playoff spot.
That was a should win game.
And they laid an egg and lost to the Giants and were eliminated from the postseason.
So it actually has happened, you know, a surprising number of times through over the last few years.
We weren't right a lot of the time, or some of you weren't right a lot of the time.
But I think this is a should win game.
Now, I'm going to give you my keys to the game and a prediction coming up.
There is an aspect to this game that I'm concerned about.
But the Panthers are not a good defensive football team.
Washington should be able to score at will,
and they should be able to win this game to get to five and two
for the first time since 2020.
I mean, as bad as we think they've been, you know,
and they've been a bad franchise,
but they've actually played in games that, you know,
sitting here on Fridays,
a lot of people thought, no, this is a game they should win.
And they didn't a lot of the times,
including the most recent should win.
win games, Chicago last year, and the Giants in Tommy DeVito last year. I feel completely different,
though, about this team. I mean, let's face it, for starters, there's a big difference.
They got a quarterback, Jaden Daniels. All right, let's get to my keys to a win over the Carolina
Panthers on Sunday in this should win game. Before my first key to a victory over
Carolina. I just want to mention what I've been mentioning during the course of the week,
and that is if you haven't seen Carolina play, and why would you have, they're a capable
team offensively with Andy Dalton. He came in for Bryce Young after Young got benched after
week two, and he's played the last four games. They beat the Raiders in his first start this year
with the Panthers, 36 to 22. They've lost three in a row. They lost to the Bengals, they lost to the
Bears and they lost to the Falcons last week. The Cincinnati and Atlanta losses were probably
more competitive than the final scores indicated, and they were because Carolina moved the football,
and they scored points, especially during the first portion of the game, or really the first
two-thirds of the game, and then they got into some self-destructive penalties and turnovers, and that's
been their problem over the last three weeks. More than anything else on offense, it hasn't been
the inability to move the football. It has been that they make mistakes. Dalton's thrown picks.
They've had a lot of penalties, and that's derailed a lot of their drives in which they were
moving the football and threatening to score. They're capable offensively. I promise you that.
Andy Dalton can play, especially when you've got a balanced attack, and they can run the football.
Chuba Hubbard is a big-time NFL running back people.
I mean, this guy's going to get paid in the offseason.
He's a free agent.
He's currently number three in the league in rushing.
He's number two in yards per carry.
He's third in yards after contact.
He's fourth in rushes over 15 yards.
He's a really good back.
He had a good year last year.
He's having a year in which he's on track to rush for 1,300-plus yards.
He's got great vision, he's got great feet, he is fast enough, he is physical,
and they're pretty solid on their offensive line, especially the interior of their
offensive line.
They've got receivers in Deontay Johnson, who is questionable, so we'll see if he's a go on
Sunday, and Xavier Leggett, the rookie from South Carolina.
This is a team offensively that can move the football against most teams, but especially
against teams that aren't very good defensively.
Atlanta wasn't very good defensively.
That score was 2217 at halftime.
You know, the game was 28 to 20, and they were on the move with a chance to, you know,
score, go for two to tie it early in the fourth quarter, but Dalton threw a pick.
He does that on occasion.
But they're capable of moving the football.
So number one on the list of Washington beats Carolina unsubstably.
Sunday if. They stop Carolina from possessing the football and, you know, eating the clock and
shortening the game. You know, Carolina's got some ridiculously long drives this year. Last week,
they opened up the game with a 12-play 67-yard drive that took six and a half minutes. Against Cincinnati,
they had an 11-play-70-yard drive that was a five-and-a-half-minute drive. 11-play 70 yards,
it took over six minutes. They had the same thing.
thing in their win over the Raiders.
You know, if they don't self-destruct with penalties or turnovers, they have possessed
the football.
They have converted on third downs.
I'm just telling you right now, that is the big concern for me, is that Carolina is
able to run the football, stay balanced, play action starts to work.
So now Andy Dalton's got a chance to attack Washington's weak secondary off of the threat
of running the football.
And I could see defensively Washington being off balance and giving up some long drives
and giving up some plays on third down and giving up points.
I could.
I think Washington's too good offensively for Carolina defensively.
So, you know, worst case, this could be kind of a shootout or kind of a, you know,
a shortened game where there's, you know, a lot of points per drive, but maybe fewer possessions.
But I think number one is you can't let K.
Carolina possess the football and shorten the game.
You know, teams that are playing Washington these days are doing the thing that we used to do when we played teams with good quarterbacks.
And that is, you got to possess the ball.
You got to, you know, your offense has to be your best defense because you don't want to face.
You don't want to face that, you know, other offense.
You got to keep that other quarterback in the offense off the field.
That's what they're saying now about Jaden Daniels in this offense.
You know, Carolina is probably approaching it like our best defense will be our ability to possess the football, move the football, and have it pay off in the form of points at the end of some of these long drives.
Because defensively, I don't think they have much of a chance.
Now, how does Washington, you know, keep Carolina from possessing the football?
That leads me to number two.
They've got to stop the run.
You know, they last week loaded the box, right?
And the truth is, is Derek Henry didn't rush for a lot of yards in the first half.
They primarily came in the second half.
But Lamar Jackson, you know, facing eight-man boxes, ended up throwing the football against their single high and very successfully.
Baltimore is a different animal than Carolina.
I'm not in any way, shape, or form comparing Carolina's offensive ability to Baltimore's.
but I would load the box and make sure that they don't get started with a really good balance
with Chuba Hubbard, you know, gaining 5.6 yards per carry.
That's his average.
If that happens on Sunday, and by the way, they've been gashed plenty against the run.
The only game that they really weren't good against the run was the Cleveland game.
Even James Connor averaged a bunch of yards per carry.
You know, that game got sideways because they couldn't keep up with Washington's offense.
and for some inexplicable reason, as we've talked about, they didn't run the quarterback.
If Hubbard is getting chunk yards, if he's getting four, five yards of carry,
and they're able to go play action, they've got receivers that will be able to beat Washington's coverage.
And they've got an offensive line that can hold up, certainly in their interior.
So stop the run Sunday.
Commit to stopping the run.
if try to make Carolina one dimensional, can you do that against them?
I don't know if they can, but I think they have to.
If not, they're going to get moved on.
And the dimension that I'd leave them with is Andy Dalton throwing the football.
Because Hubbard can really take the spirit out of you with the way he can run the football.
So stop the run.
That's number two.
and that will certainly affect number one,
which is keep them from possessing the football
for too much of the game,
which would allow them to shorten the game.
You know, the lesser teams want fewer possessions
a faster game.
When you're playing Washington now,
you don't want them to end up with 10, 11 possessions in the game
because they're going to hang 35 plus on you
with their offense.
I mean, you know, with six,
drives against Cincinnati. They scored 38. So even shortening the game doesn't work all the time.
Number three on this list. Take the lead early, get a lead on Carolina, break their spirit.
This is a one in five football team. They had the lead against Atlanta last week, seven to nothing on the
opening drive. And so, you know, it didn't work out for them, but they were in the game until the fourth quarter.
when they turn the ball over a couple of times.
But let's take the ball maybe on if we win the toss,
and let's go down and take a 7-0-0 lead.
You know, let's try to get a double digit,
a two-score lead on this team.
And I think at that point, they probably go away.
Andy Dalton's a competitor.
You know, the red rifle is going to hang in there,
and he's going to sling it around the field,
even when they're down, you know, by double digits.
but I think taking the lead in trying to break any sort of idea that they have of pulling off the big upset
and it would be, point spread-wise, is huge. Offensively, run the football.
Carolina is not a good run-stopping team. They're not a good defensive team, period.
Last week, you didn't run the football against a stout front. You didn't have Brian Robinson,
Jr. looks like he'll be ready to go. I'll give you the updates on captains and the players that are out,
who have been ruled out as of this afternoon by Dan Quinn here in a moment.
But I think they can run the football.
I think this can be another 200-yard-plus rushing day.
You know, Washington dropped going into the Baltimore game.
They were number three in rushing yards per game.
After the Baltimore game, they dropped to fifth in the league.
They are behind Baltimore Green Bay, San Francisco, in Detroit.
in rushing yards per game. They were third last week. They just didn't run the football against
Baltimore. I think the opportunity exists for Brian Robinson, Austin Echler, anybody else to have a big
day rushing the football. If that happens, by the way, you're not even going to need a lot of
Jaden Daniels to Terry McClure and Jaden Daniels in the pocket. You know, Carolina's base defense is a
three, four. They're so banged up defensively. This should be a day in which Washington
controls the line of scrimmage, runs the football, play action, quick game.
Everything should work against Carolina. It really should.
I don't see how Washington's league leading points per drive takes a dip this week.
They're going to score on the majority of their possessions.
The issue is the other side of the ball.
Lastly, is this. Carolina has self-destructed.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Washington,
needs Carolina to self-destruct to win the game. That's not true. But if Carolina self-destructs,
this will be a route. If Carolina has, like they had last week, 10 penalties and two
turnovers and minus two in the turnover margin, or like they had the minus three in the turnover
margin the week before against Chicago, this is, you know, a 35 to 14 route. Without
Carolina self-destructing, then you've got to get
this stops on defense. I'm just not confident about that. I mean, is anybody that confident that
they can stop anybody defensively? Anybody capable? Cleveland was not capable offensively.
They just weren't. They might be now that Nick Chubb is back, but they just weren't. That was
kind of fool's gold. I mean, it was a confidence builder last week, not so much. You know, I guess you
could certainly create in your own mind if you're the team, hey, that's Baltimore. We'll
back to what we were against Cleveland and Arizona against the Panthers. But the Panthers are a
better, much better offensive team than Cleveland. In many ways, you know, they're as good,
if not better than Arizona. I mean, Connor and Hubbard are good backs. They didn't stick
with Connor in that game, and they didn't run the quarterback. Now, the good news is the red rifle
isn't a run threat. They're not a dual threat team. But I am concerned about a game that
gets shortened where Carolina possesses the ball, where they run the football, where
Hubbard goes for 4.8 per carry, goes for 110, 115 yards. And because of it,
Dalton's completing a high percentage of his passes that if he doesn't turn it over,
it's a ball game in the fourth quarter. That's what I think's going to happen. And that leads
me to my prediction. I think Washington wins the game, 27 to 20. I think it's a game in which defensively
on Monday we are once again questioning whether or not this limitation will really limit a
potential big upside to this regular season and beyond. And the conversation will once again
get ramped up about whether or not they should do something, adding players defensively via
trade before the trade deadline if those players are available.
We went through that conversation earlier in the week.
But I think offensively, they'll have a big day running the football.
I see 100 plus for Brian Robinson Jr.
I see a day in which they could probably rush for 175 plus on the day against the
Panthers.
And I see a 27 to 20 competitive game, but a win.
I hope I'm wrong.
I'd love to see an Arizona or a Cleveland
kind of a route.
But I think Carolina's offense is a bad matchup for Washington's defense.
And vice versa.
Carolina's defense cannot stop Washington.
Look, the skins are a better team.
They're a better team.
They should win this game at home to get to five and two.
And that'll give us, you know, quite the week and the buildup towards Caleb and
Jaden Daniels, Bears, and Washington a week from Sunday.
Real quickly, what a college football Saturday we have tomorrow. Alabama, Tennessee, 3.30.
Neither one of those two teams is playing very well, but can't wait to watch that one.
And then Georgia in Texas.
Neither one of those two games, I'll tell you right now, is a pick for me, but they are absolute must-watch games.
Georgia, I'm more impressed with them after what they did against Bama with Carson Beck,
because I was not impressed with him prior.
They have now scored a bunch of points. It seemed to kind of light a fire.
underneath them offensively.
Interestingly, they gave up a lot of points to Mississippi State last week.
Texas is the better team, but man, this is a massive showdown.
Texas's first year in the SEC, they're threatening to win the league.
I think they're the best team in the country right now, but what a matchup tomorrow,
and I cannot wait.
Texas right now about a four and a half point favorite in Austin.
Maryland plays USC.
Nothing says Big Ten football like the Trojans traveling to college park.
Look, I think Maryland can win this game.
I think USC is pretty bad defensively.
Maryland can move the football.
Hopefully, Loxley started to call plays last week.
Did not go well.
They scored 10 points against Northwestern.
Northwestern is actually a better defensive team, though, than SC is.
Maryland's gotten torched, though, through the air by much lesser teams.
And Miller Moss and company can throw the football.
This should be a shootout in College Park tomorrow.
SC playing in College Park at Bird Stadium, a Capital One field.
Crazy, right?
Game is not a sellout.
They've been discounting tickets to get people to go to this game.
Disappointing years so far for the Terps.
But I'm with them.
Let's go beat SC in our first ever matchup against the Trojans as Big Ten foes.

Jumping on with me right now, per usual, on a Friday is the former head coach of the Washington Redskins.
Jay Gruden, he's with us every Friday during football season right through the Super Bowl.
four and two now on your lock of the week.
You had Tampa last week facing Spencer Rattler and said there's no way a rookie quarterback can get over on Todd Bulls.
That was a wild game.
By the way, New Orleans horrible last night.
Denver's an interesting team.
We'll talk NFL here in a minute, but we'll get Jay's pick, his lock of the week coming up in a few minutes.
I do want to start by going back to last week.
Washington's seven point loss to Baltimore.
How did you think Jaden Daniels played?
I thought he played, you know, he didn't play exceptional like he has shown,
but I think he played good enough to get them a win, if that makes sense.
He didn't, you know, I thought he played good, actually.
You know, the defense obviously had trouble stopping the run in the past.
You know, they had to load up the box, and it was just tough.
It was a tough matchup for their defense.
But I thought Jayden played good.
You know, he had a couple throws, and I think he wished he had back.
He failed one.
The Army Brown was almost intercepted and missed a couple of throws.
But for the most part, I thought he played pretty damn good on the road at Baltimore.
Yeah, I thought it's interesting your answer because I thought, given that the team was totally one-dimensional,
they couldn't run the football, they lost interest in even trying to run the football.
And it was pure dropback.
I mean, there was a lot of play action in there, don't get me wrong, but
Baltimore really contained him in the pocket.
And I thought that this was the first opportunity to see him just have to deliver over and over again from the pocket.
You know, sometimes with pressure, sometimes it was just contained pressure.
And I thought he did.
That's exactly right.
I think my biggest worry was if they got behind and they became one-dimensional, how would he fare?
I think he showed that he can stay in the pocket and throw the ball and not have to rely on the zone.
He's in the runs and the scrambles and all that stuff.
So now that he, now we know he can do that, and we know he can run,
and with Brian Robinson back, their ability to run the football,
I think it just makes them very, very dangerous in the next coming weeks.
How concerned should we be about the defense?
Very, very.
Their defense isn't good, and it's a problem.
I'm hoping they make a move before the trade.
deadline to get either another defense
alignment on a pass rusher or a corner or something like
that. They need help on the outside.
They need help on the inside. I don't
know what their strength is other than
they play hard. And Dan Quinn's
a very good defensive coach, but he's
got his hands tied behind
his back really. He can't really load up the boxes
or corners aren't good enough. He can't really play
coverage because their front's not good enough.
So they're going to have issues moving forward.
The good thing is their offense can score,
so they're going to be in a lot of games. I just think that
their defense is really going to
struggle from here and out.
You've been there before with a team that could really score and really move the football
but couldn't stop anybody.
So I was going to ask you if you were the coach, you'd want your GM to make moves prior
to the deadline on defense.
Yes, because I think the offense is good enough to beat anybody.
I really do, especially in the conference.
Dallas defense is putrid.
Philadelphia's corners aren't very good, and we already beat the Giants.
So yes, if we can get just a little bit of help on a defense, the slow.
somebody down, create a turnover something, it'll really help because I think this team can be in
every football game with the offense and O'H-Aid's plan.
What are the draft, the trade deadline moves that you remember either talking about or actually
getting done?
None. I don't remember anything.
I was going to say, I can't remember. I mean, was there a big move?
I don't remember anybody coming in mid-season. I don't remember anybody coming in mid-season.
oh my God, we got this guy from so-and-so.
Let's go.
I don't remember that.
Do you?
Actually, trade deadline stuff?
I don't during your time.
I can't remember anything that really stands out.
I mean, you know, I remember.
It's hard for, you know, it's hard unless, you know, like Devonthe going to the Jets
where there's some familiarity with the offense and all that stuff.
It's not easier said than done and just trade a second round pick for somebody.
People want it.
People cherish their draft picks.
want to give them up.
They think that the second round pick will be better than the starting corner like a Denzel
Ward or somebody like that when they're wrong.
If you get a chance to get a guy like Denzel Ward for a second round pick,
I mean, you surely would take Denzel Ward in a second round if he was available next year.
So I don't know why people don't make a move like that more often, but teams are afraid
to they want to keep the draft picks.
Yeah.
Do you remember ever going to Bruce or anybody in saying, look, we're pretty good, like 2016,
we're really good on offense. We got a chance. We need another player or two.
Or was that not something you would have done?
No, no, I didn't do that. Also, I wasn't really privy to who was on the trade, who is available.
You know what I mean? You can't just go up there. Hey, let's go get this guy. This guy,
this guy, this guy is because they're not always available. So you don't really know that.
You have to be really in with the agents. And I'm not talking to the agents on a daily basis.
I have no idea who wants to get traded. Who's available for?
for a trade, what we're willing to give up.
So I just kept my head.
And I stayed in my lane and tried to coach the football team.
I wasn't really involved in that.
You know, it's interesting is that for basically Dan's first 10 years of being an owner,
it was always about these big splashy, you know, signings in the offseason, you know,
overpaying big time for typically aging, you know, stars.
And then when Bruce got here, it actually was different.
I mean, other than Deshawn and maybe Josh Norman, there weren't the big splashy signings.
You know, there were the lower end signings where Bruce felt like he was getting a great deal on a mediocre player, I always felt.
Yeah, that's true.
Josh was probably the biggest one.
You know, we went and tried to get some depth early in my career.
We tried to get some defense alignment.
We had Hatcher.
We tried to get some defense alignment to help our depth because we had really a thin.
we didn't have anybody on a defense.
We had to get some players there.
We went out.
We tried to get the, you know,
the guys I didn't really agree with, you know,
the Zach Brown,
trial prior,
you know,
Paul Richardson,
we tried to get steal from him.
But,
you know,
we made some mistakes in free agency.
But for the most part,
we didn't get the splash guys,
which was fine by me.
I think we had a pretty good nucleus of players,
but we did need help every now and then when you're struggling,
especially on defense.
You need some splash guys.
Yeah.
There were,
you know, there were the E.J. Biggers and the Dante Stallworths and the hatchers and the Tracy
porters. And I mean, like, I just remember the Terrell, I remember the Terelke, the McLearner. We went out and
got Swaranger. That was awesome.
Hey, your favorite guy. Your favorite guy. I remember like the McLean-Magee, you know,
combo. Neither one of those guys could play. That's a great memory right there. I like McGee.
And McLean, those guys served a purpose as far as depth on the defensive line.
They weren't terrible.
They were good guys.
They stopped the run.
We needed depth.
We didn't have anybody when I got here.
It was crazy.
We had Goldspin who was getting older.
I loved Kedricen.
We had Chris Baker.
Ricky John Francois.
Ricky, Rick.
We went and got Ricky Jean-Frenfranclah.
And what was the guy?
I think he played for the Bears.
Was it Paya?
Yep, yep.
We got Paya for a little while.
He's a good run-stopper.
Who was the guy from the Steelers?
I love, he's a great guy.
Big strong for him again.
Jolly, it's trying to be crazy.
Anyway, I mean, those guys all served a purpose
as far as depth on the defensive line,
and you've got to have it.
Like, you know, Washington's going to figure out
when you lose Jonathan Allen,
now they're going to be pulling from their practice squad,
and it's going to be a struggle.
That rotation on the defensive line is critical.
need guys. You know, one guy that actually came back to the organization, because when you
mentioned the Steelers, I was reminded that, you know, you guys signed Ryan Clark to come back and
play in D.C. And I remember, you know, kind of watching Ryan from afar going, well, this guy's
going to be in media, number one. Number two, I think he wants to be in media right now more than
he wants to play football. And so, you know, I did kind of a bit on radio where I just referred to
Ryan Clark, long before he left football and started to work for ESPN. I just referred to him as
ESPN's Ryan Clark, because he just seemed like that's, he's coming back to D.C., one last
fling, and then he was going to go into media. Do you remember feeling that way about him, or was that
just, you know, a misrepresentation from afar? You know, I didn't even put two and two together,
to be honest with you. We signed Ryan Clark because I played against Ryan, or I coached against Ryan
when I was with the Bengals three years,
and I thought he was one of the best tackling safeties
I've ever seen at the position as three safety.
He could play middle safety,
and he could make a tackle for a game of three.
He was unbelievable with his instincts and his tackling ability.
Obviously, he had lost a step,
and he wasn't the same when we got him,
but I wanted him for leadership in the locker room
and try to, you know,
because we really never had a really strong leadership presence on defense.
You know, Ryan Carragorn was a great guy, but he was very quiet.
Right.
You know, our linebackers were never really good enough to be.
What about London?
We never had that.
I never had London.
Oh, that's right.
Of course.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I needed that alpha male on defense, and I thought Ryan,
the way he played at Pittsburgh would be perfect in that role,
but he just wasn't quite the same player when we got him,
and it didn't work out very well for us.
He just couldn't run when we got him as good as he did at Pittsburgh.
What about Josh Norman?
Remember the discussion?
question was after you guys went out and signed him, was he the right fit for the defense,
more of his own corner, and it didn't seem to fit with what you guys wanted to do at the time?
Is my memory right or wrong?
Probably, yeah, he was more of his own corner, covered two quarters, reading the quarterback.
He was great ball skills, great tackler, forced turnovers with his ball punch and all that stuff.
And I love Josh. I think Josh played a lot better people give him credit for.
He got burnt a couple times, which people can focus.
on the couple plays that he got burnt on.
But the big thing with Josh was, I think a lot of players
resent him because of his contract.
And, you know, like Breeland,
and we had some issues at the locker room
and the defensive back meeting rooms
because they resented them.
They never really welcomed in.
I love Josh.
I think Josh was a good player for us.
If we had the ability to play more zone
and less single high safety,
probably would have better off.
But we had to load the box up to help our defense
line from time to time and put them on an island.
But I think Josh was better than people
give them credit for.
How did the Deshawn Jackson thing come
together. He was having the issues in Philly, and then before we knew it, he had signed a deal
to come here. Yeah, I don't really know. I know that I've always had a ton of respect for Deshaun
and what he can do. He has that it factor when it comes to track on the deep ball and the big play
ability. So, you know, when they brought his name to us, to me, I was like, oh, yeah, I'll take
Deshaun. You know, Deshaun is a hell of a big play threat, and he proved that with us. He's a great
player. You know, he had his issues as far as when he's in the game, you know,
there's absolutely no blocking whatsoever with him, but just put him on the other side away from the run,
and you'll be fine. If you get the three or four big play from him, a game, he's worth
having on your team, and I love to Sean. He's fun to have. He's fun to coach.
How do you do that as an offensive coach where if you know that he can't block, the opponent
knows he can't block? So if he's on the field, you know they're not running anywhere near him.
So how do you deal with that? Because essentially,
If you want to run the ball with him on the field, you have to go to the other side, as you just said.
Oh, it was an issue for us.
It was a major issue because if we want to run to the Sean side, we have to flip the formation and put Pierre in motion.
And Pierre didn't want to do that shit.
But Pierre, he wanted to be an X.
He wanted to be on the ball.
He would get pissed off when he had to motion and play Z or X or whatever was,
a different position or on a different side.
So it was an issue for us.
I can remember one time in a walkthrough, we lined up in a formation, and we were in a bunch
set, and if the safety walked down, we had the motion the Z in almost between the tackle
and a tight end and dig out the safety.
And we did it and walked through, and he did it.
He came back to the huddle and he goes, hey, grew, that's really not in our game plan,
isn't it?
I go, no, we'll put Ryan Grant in for that one.
Don't worry.
Yeah, you loved Ryan Grant because he's the only one that would block for you.
That's exactly right.
think I loved it. I mean, I loved him because he was such a T. He'd do anything for us.
And he'd play any position. And he was a great kid and worked his ass off.
You know, I know his skill wasn't quite what he needed to be a superstar player,
but he was a superstar of my mind because he would do whatever we asked him to do.
And, you know, obviously Pierre was Pierre. He's a hell of a player and worked his ass off
and Deshaun had his skill set. But I needed somebody do the dirty work, and that was Ryan.
You know, when I think about that team, because it is one of my of the last
10 years. The 2016 team
I loved in part because I just
thought Kirk was great.
You know, when you had Deshawn and Jordan
and Pierre on the field,
I mean, you threw the ball against everybody.
But really, that
team was one-dimensional.
You couldn't run the football. I mean,
Fat Rob wasn't a great running
back. You didn't have a good running back.
You didn't have receivers that would block.
You didn't have a tight end that would block.
Right?
Yeah. No, that was tough. It was tough to
run the football, that's for sure.
And, you know, I always say that the reason why Washington's running the ball so much
matter, they address the tight end situation.
Logan Thomas they had last year, and he couldn't block full.
So how they got Zach Ertz and Bates is a good blocker, and obviously from that they
dropped it from Kansas State.
So now they have three guys in there.
It makes a big difference in running the football.
All the teams that run the football, if you look around the league George Kittle
and all these teams that have tight ends, it makes a hell of a difference because it makes
you more versatile cutting off the backside or blocking the point of attack.
you can't really function in a running game without a tight end.
And Jordan, as good as he was, he was not a blocker.
Now, he could block space, like on the outside zones, he could do that stuff,
and maybe insert and block a linebacker.
But as far as point of attack, no way.
Yeah.
Did you see the play design on the flea flicker last week?
Was it a tackle?
For Washington.
When they, it was a bad pitch back to Jaden.
He was able to handle it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
a screen, it was a screen off of a flea flicker.
Yeah, those are sweet. Those are sweet because when you do a flea flicker, people, the linebackers panic drop.
They go, oh, it's a flea flicker, they sprint out of there.
Then you dump a screen off. It's pretty damn sweet, yeah.
I thought you're talking about the Detroit Lion.
No, no, no, no. I mean, that was just part of that onslaught.
No, I was talking about that because I think, you know, when you see that running back
turned to pitch it back to the quarterback, 99% of the time when you watch football,
he's looking deep, and it was set up for a screen, and I thought that was a pretty unique setup.
Kingsbury was asked about it. He said David Blow, who's on the staff, he was in Detroit,
said he learned it from Jeff Brom, who is, he's the coach at Louisville, right, now.
Yeah, just my guy.
He said it was Jeff's creation at Purdue when he was there.
Yeah. Well, I've seen that before.
You have?
Flickr screens and all that stuff.
Yeah, yeah, those are good plays.
Like I said, you know, we used to have our best hits on screen passes off play action.
Not so much the flea flicker, but the play action screen is where you're pulling it out,
and you're looking deep and you're growing on high crosses,
and then you dump it off the tight end on the screen or back on the screen.
Those are huge hits because the linebackers step up for the run,
and then all of a sudden they sprint out of there because they know it's a play action pass,
and then you dump a screen off.
It's hard on the defense.
Is there a play that you remember designing that you were really, you know,
excited about, proud of?
We had a couple
screens that designed for Chris Thompson are pretty sweet.
Yeah, some backdoor screens
coming across the formation or looping behind the
quarterback. You know,
pick plays for him on
screen passes. Those are pretty sweet, yeah.
I can remember five or six of those.
What about one
that you designed that just flat out didn't work?
A lot of those.
But nothing
sticks out?
Nothing really tricky, no.
No trick plays.
I can remember.
I'll think of it when I'm on hold number four.
Damn, I should have told she in.
All right.
Are you concerned at all about the Panthers as a match-up Sunday?
Offensively, I think they're going to do pretty good.
I think Andy will have a few guys.
Assume Andy's start.
I don't think they're going back to Bryce Young, are they?
No.
Okay, yeah.
I think, yeah, I'll be a little bit concerned about their ability to move the football,
but no, I think they should,
they should run through the Panthers pretty easily, especially offensively, I think
we should expect at least 35, 40 points against Panthers.
The Panthers have, I mean, they've moved the football a little bit.
It's just been turnover instead of perdom.
They can move the ball.
And that's the whole thing.
You know, when you have a crappy defense, then you turn a ball over as well,
you have no chance to win.
That's their MO.
If they don't turn a ball over and they can possess the football and keep the game close,
then they'll have a chance.
but once you start turn a ball over with a terrible defense, you have absolutely zero chance.
So you got them at 5 and 2, what's your prediction Sunday?
Do they cover?
They're an eight-point favorite.
I think so.
I think, well, I don't know if they'll cover.
I think it'll be a high-score game.
I think if I were to play the game, I'd play whatever Washington's team total is,
higher, lower, if it's 24 and a half, whatever it is I play.
I think Washington is going to score will.
I think B. Rob coming back, they're able to run the football,
and then I don't know what Carolina is good at.
They can't really rush a pass or they can't really cover.
Very similar to Washington's defense.
So I would actually play the total over in that game.
I think it's going to be probably 50, I would guess.
51 and a half.
51 and a half.
It's going to be high-scoring game.
Washington's offensive is crazy good.
Jayden's way he's playing.
I think it's, yeah.
The only issue you have when you have a total that high
is if we're running a football good,
the clock's churning, you know what I mean?
and then he gets stopped in the red zone,
kick a field goal,
and eat up seven minutes in the first quarter.
You know, those are the ones you worry about.
If you're not giving up any, if you're getting any big plays,
they're just, you know, 12 play drives for six minutes and a field goal,
then you're screwed.
But I think Washington should be able to sport will against Carolina,
and I think Carolina has got sports points it.
You just gave the exact scenario that I think you got to worry about.
And they've got Hubbard, who's a big time back right now.
I think he's, you know,
He's top two in yards per rush in the NFC.
He's the third leading rusher overall in the league.
He's got great vision.
They seem to be running it pretty well with him.
They've got, you know, that kid Leggett from South Carolina.
They got Deontay Johnson.
Dalton makes a big difference.
And if you get that, you know, 14 play drive where they don't, you know,
self-inflict with, you know, a penalty or turnover,
and they're on the field for six minutes,
that game shortens up.
and all of a sudden it's a lot closer in the fourth quarter than you think.
Just like the Giants game.
Yeah.
You know, Washington drove the ball at will up and down the field,
seven field goals.
And then Giants were basically up and down the field.
It was what was the final score, 21-18, something like that.
21 to 18, exactly.
Yeah, yeah.
So that's what you worry about.
But I still think there are going to be some big plays to be had that game,
hopefully.
I still play over probably.
All right, before we get to your lock.
If I were guessing, I probably wouldn't play that game that total.
I don't like playing over.
that high just for the reason that we said, but I would assume there's going to be
so does Vegas. I think they also assume there's going to be a lot of points.
All right. Before we get to your lock of the week, a couple of things. The NFC is the conference
right now that looks like the deepest. I mean, the NFC North, all four teams. You know,
the Bears and Packers are four and two. The lines are four and one. Minnesota's five and
oh. And by the way, their schedule the rest of the way. The way it looks right now is not,
you know, that difficult other than playing the teams in their division.
Who do you like to win the NFC North?
You know, I did a show on my clean pocket on YouTube before the season.
I said the NFC North was the best division.
Everybody's looking at me like I was an idiot,
and they're top to bottom by far the best division.
I love the way Minnesota is playing team football, offense, defense, special teams.
I think they don't really have a weakness.
Sam Darnal obviously has got a system that he's comfortable with,
and they have a game-breaking wide receiver, which makes a big difference.
I love the way Chicago plays defense, and Caleb's starting to get the hang of it.
Detroit, I think Detroit's losing Hayden Hutchinson.
Aiden Hutchinson is a huge deal for them defensively, but offensively they're as good as anybody in the National Football League.
In Green Bay, Jordan Love is, God-Tang, he's good.
I would probably, if I had a pick right now, I'd probably pick Minnesota to win the division
just because of their defense and the way they're playing.
They don't need to score 30 points to win the game.
But, golly, that's a tough call.
And I love Detroit.
I love Green Bay.
My God.
They've got 17 turnovers or leading the National Football League and get the ball back to the offense.
Yeah, so I don't know.
If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably take Minnesota just because, no, if you put a gun to my head, I'd probably take Detroit.
Well, hurry up because we don't want them to pull the trigger.
You've got to come up with the right answer.
I think it's, I, God.
I actually picked Green Bay yesterday.
We did this on radio.
I wouldn't not argue that either.
But I also think it's like one of those years where whoever wins that division,
it doesn't mean that they're going to, you know, then beat another team in their division in the postseason,
even if they're hosting.
Like, you got a lot of, I mean, it's possible.
Do you think the bears are legit or not?
I think the bears are legit because of their defense.
And if Caleb gets going, I have three really good receivers.
I mean, Adunze is a hell of a player.
He's a 50-50 ball machine.
Obviously, Keenan Allen's a monster, and DJ Moore's hell of a player.
Yeah, they stop the run.
They have one of the best corners in the National Football League.
So they are definitely a threat, but I don't think they can compete with the other three.
I think they'll probably still come in third or fourth in division.
Yeah.
Jalen Johnson and Terry McLaurin next week.
That'll be a good match.
That game should be a great game.
You know, Chicago's here next week off of their by week to play Washington.
And that's what I worry about Washington is when you get a corner like him against Terry
and let's say he shut them down a little bit.
I don't know if he totally shut him down, but then where are we going?
You know what I mean?
That's the issue.
But the rest of the NFC, too, the NFC South, Atlanta and Tampa, that's going to be a battle.
Yeah, that's a good battle.
I don't think those teams are nearly as good as the three of the four-hand in the north.
In the north, I mean, but I do like Tampa and the way Baker's playing for sure,
and I think Todd Bowles always have a competitive defense in Atlanta, you know,
with Kirk and the way he's still in Iraq, and defensively, Rahim does a good job of the defense.
So, yeah, there will be an issue, too.
There are some really good games Sunday, in the one o'clock window, especially.
You get the big one in the four o'clock window, not ours, but Chiefs' Four.
49ers. But how about Texans at Packers?
Yeah, that's going to be a hell of a game. I love CJ.
I think Green Bay is going to be too much for them this week.
I think losing Nico is a huge, huge deal for Houston.
I mean, that's a big-time player for them.
And I know they still have Tankbill and I still have digs,
but I just think Nico is a big-time option.
And I think the recipe, what Minnesota did to Houston,
I think Green Bay will watch a lot of that film
and they'll figure out way to shut them down, but, you know, it'll be held again.
Lions Vikings at one in Minnesota.
Minnesota is a one-and-a-half-point favorite.
That's the game.
That's the game, man.
That's going to be a bloodbath.
That's going to be fun to watch.
Yeah, I don't know if I'd pick that one.
I would probably take Detroit if I was taking it just because of the physicality
that they play with offensively, but Minnesota has some big son-of-guns on the defense
a line.
It would be hard for them to run the football effectively as they have in the last couple.
weeks. They're going to have to throw the ball a little bit more
a known-passing situation. If Jared Gough
does have a flaw, it's throwing the ball
into coverage, and that's where Minnesota Feast
Haynes will make some plays.
Yeah, that'll be hell of the game.
It depends on who does the best
on first and second down and eliminate
the third and longs, because both teams will struggle
but third and long. Super Bowl rematch
Chiefs at Niners.
San Francisco's a two-point favorite.
Yeah, I don't know.
I would never bet against Patrick
Mahomes. Yeah, I would take
Kansas City in that one. I think Kansas City's defense will stop Mason in the running game
and forced Brock Perry to throw it, and that's where Kansas City will feast and get some
turnovers. I would not bet against Kansas City and Patrick Bull. If you're going to give me points
and Patrick Holmes and Spagnola's defense and Andy Reed, I'll take them all day every day.
How about the Jets adding Devante Adams there at Pittsburgh where it might be Russell Wilson's Sunday night?
Yeah, that'll be big time ad for them because that'll help brief haul a lot. You know, I think
Devante still merits the fact you've got to give him a lot of respect.
You don't want him one-on-one a lot.
You've got Garrett Wilson on the other side,
so you'll see more split safeties,
which will help the running game immensely.
So, yeah, I think the jets are a hell of a lot better shape today than they were last week.
So any help they get in the comfort level that Devante has with Aaron Rogers is huge.
I mean, Aaron knows how to throw it to them,
and they'll put them at number two and trips and all that stuff,
and he has a great route tree in there, the under, the corners, the undertake-off,
Yeah, I think Devante will be a huge help for New York Jets,
and I think they all of a sudden become a player to compete for the AFC East.
All right, we'll get to your lock in the week here in a second.
Real quickly, what did you make of Nick Siriani last week chirping at fans, you know, and after that guy?
Idiotic, I mean, right?
I mean, he looked bad.
It was not a good look for him at all.
So, yeah, I know he's got to regret that.
I mean, right?
There's nothing good about that
If not motivation for your team
Your fans are your fans
You want to hug your fans
And ignore them if they're yelling at chick
I got yelled at a lot by our fans
I was fine with I deserved it
But I hugged them when we won
And I just walked away
My head down between my legs when we lost
You accept it
But you don't want to have confrontations with fans
That's ridiculous
I think that team's talented
Are they going to figure it out or not
Offensively, they are very talented.
There's no doubt about it.
Defensively, I think they have a lot of holes.
You know, they have good defense alignment, a couple defense alignment,
but the edge pressures, you know, they don't have much edge pressure in their corners or a liability.
So I think they're going to struggle defensively.
But offensively, they've got to pick it up and play to their potential.
They haven't done so.
And since they went to the Super Bowl with Jayland, they've been underachieving for a long time offensively.
They've got to pick it up offensively.
They've got to have a chance because defensively they can't hold up.
All right.
Four and two lock of the week.
Who do you have this week?
You're going to laugh.
He might laugh at this.
Everybody, you might laugh.
But I'm taking, I'm taking a Tennessee Titans.
I'm taking all them points.
Oh, an underdog.
I know.
I think they play good enough defense to keep it close.
And I think they'll be able to run the ball a little bit against Buffalo.
And I think it'll be a close game.
Buffalo has come off a big money night road,
and they're at home.
And I think they're going to sleepwalk a little bit.
Tennessee might pop them in the mouth early
keep it close. I think Buffalo probably win, but I think Tennessee keeps it close.
Like the logic, especially, you know, Bill's Monday night, short week, you know, big emotional
win. Tennessee's defense is good. It's really good. Will Levis is not good.
Levis does not look like a quarterback. Please, I just, I just hope to hand it off a lot.
Run that clock. If Buffalo gets up early, if Buffalo gets up early, of course, Tennessee to
throw, I apologize to everybody for the pick, but I'm hoping to keep it close early. And if
like a 20 to 13, 20 to 14 game.
You don't have to apologize.
Your 4 and 2, a lock of the week.
He's got the Titans plus 9 and underdog for Jay this week.
Thanks.
I'll talk to you next week.
Yeah, thanks, Kevin.

said about mitopure, the newest sponsor on the podcast, and the first product to offer a
precise dose of urolithin A. What's urolithin A? It's a postbiotic. It's good for your gut. It's been
clinically shown to energize cells, increase muscle strength, and improve endurance. And that's just
the beginning. Do you want to get older and still run, hike, play with your kids, your
grandkids? Eurolithinae is an answer, and it's nearly impossible to get from your diet alone.
Timeline is the Swiss-based life science company that came up with mitopure.
They're a global leader in urolithin A, and they spent 10 years doing research to bring this product to market.
One way to think of mitopure is that they are little packmen in your cells,
chomping up the damaged ones that make you feel old and tired,
and recycling them into new, healthy ones.
Taking two soft gels a day for two months,
you can see significant improvements in your cellular energy, muscle strength, and endurance.
After four months of taking mitopure, you'll feel yourself getting sort of,
stronger, recovering faster after a workout, and experiencing less inflammation all part of your
healthier aging routine.
Mitopure is the number one doctor-recommended urolithinae supplement that is NSF and Clean
Label Project certified.
Mitopure comes in two product designs to fit your needs.
They're berry powder, which is great to mix into your breakfast yogurt or daily smoothie,

product, Navage, a product that has really worked for my congestion. Now, I get congested typically
from allergies in the spring and this time of year during the fall. It can be all consuming that
kind of congestion, hard to focus, hard to think, snoring, issues sleeping. But Navaj nasal care
has been a game changer for clearing my congestion quickly. Navaj makes breathing easy, easier.
I found the solution. You've got to try this. Navage uses smooth saline flow and gentle patented
nasal suction to clear nasal passages. I just hold up my Navaj nasal cleaner to my nose and press
start. It's easy. It effectively unlocks and flushes his mucus from my nasal passages, and it's
fast. Works as fast as 30 seconds. Navage is drug-free. It uses 99.9% pure saline salt pods
with no medicinal side effects. I've really noticed a difference since starting to use Navage,
and it's incredibly soothing. I love the process. I want to help you get relief from your congestion.

Coach of the year odds in the NFL.
Where is Dan Quinn on this list?
Second behind Kevin O'Connell.
Kevin O'Connell is plus 130.
The Vikings coach is the favorite, but Dan Quinn is at plus 390.
He is the second odds-on pick, followed by Jim Harbaugh, and then Sean Peyton.
Sean Peyton is now fourth on the odds list for NFL coach of the year.
Denver last night walloped New Orleans.
33 to 10, and the Broncos are 4 and 3.
The Saints scored 91 points in their first two games over Carolina and Dallas.
They were 2-0.
They've now lost five straight games, and they can't score.
Now, injuries have been the massive reason for New Orleans falling apart.
Meanwhile, Denver lost their first two games of the year, and now they've won four of
their last five.
Go figure.
It's the NFL.
If you're going to bet it, you might as well open up.
account at MyBooky. Go to mybooky.orgie. Use my promo code, Kevin, D.C. Last week was not a good week.
Eight and 11, I'm four games under 500 for the year. I'm sure you have read about this.
If you follow this stuff, if you haven't, I will let you know that last Sunday was one of the worst
Sundays in years for sports books. Many sports books said that they haven't been beaten like that by the
public in over a decade. Favorites went 11, 2, and 1 last weekend. That is always a recipe for a big
day for the public better. They love favorites. I like underdogs, and I was 1 and 7 last week in the
NFL. 7 and 4 in college, 1 and 7 in the NFL, 8 and 11 overall. I did pull the Titans
pick via my social media Twitter account before kickoff. I was a lot. I'm
Sunday. I do that every once in a while when there is new information and numbers change.
So follow me at Kevin Shee in DC on X on Twitter. I've already pulled a game from this week's
smell test from the radio show this morning. I'll tell you about that here in a moment. But
follow me because I will pull games on occasion. I'll rarely add games, even though I'll end up
playing additional games.
But we stick with the Friday picks and the Friday lines, but I do reserve the right
to pull a game if there's a significant injury that we didn't know about on Friday.
Right now, Carolina went for the Panthers went from being eight-point dogs to nine and a
half point dogs.
I'm not sure why that's happened, but that's the game I'm pulling from the smell test.
I gave the Panthers out earlier this morning.
I am pulling them so you won't hear me give out the Panthers.
And I will tweet that out prior to kickoff or prior to Sunday's lineup overall when the first
game kicks off.
Actually, we've got a Sunday morning game.
Again, terrible Sunday morning game in London.
Patriots Jags.
Not good.
All right, let's get to it.
We keep swinging away.
Same philosophy, anti-public, lined up with sharp money on the side.
we're going to take. Love to see those numbers that really kind of incentivize, you know,
the public to keep hammering a certain side more and more. Yeah, let's get to it.
Tonight, Florida State plus three, as I mentioned in the open, and Oklahoma State plus 10.
I gave those two picks out in the open to the show because if you're getting this just before
kickoff, I wanted you to have it up front without having to wait for it.
Tomorrow, Auburns plus four at Missouri.
Missouri lost two weeks ago, but they came back last week and played a game that was actually kind of odd.
An SEC team in mid-October going to UMass to play a game.
That actually made no sense schedule-wise.
You rarely see that.
But Missouri, remember, two weeks ago, got absolutely blown out by Texas A&M.
but people still like them, and Auburn just has had a bad year.
They're two and four through the first half of the season.
Their last outing was against Georgia a couple of weeks ago.
I had them against Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago,
and they gave up a pick six at the end to lose it.
I'm on Auburn.
Again, the public's on Missouri, take Auburn plus the four.
Louisville's getting a short number at home against Miami.
The Cains are undefeated.
Remembered their last game,
was that comeback against Cal.
Their last two, they got lucky against Virginia Tech.
By the way, congrats to the Hokies.
They're rolling now.
42-21 winners over Boston College last night.
That game actually got close.
They were up 28-0 at halftime.
And then BC had the ball down 28-21 early in the fourth quarter,
but Virginia Tech got a fourth down stop and pulled away.
But Miami, 35-10, they were down against Cal, came back, won the game 39, 38.
I think their luck runs out tomorrow in Louisville.
Take the cards plus the five against the Cains.
Baylor's getting six.
I've been on them a couple of times, and it hasn't worked out.
Texas Tech's undefeated in the Big 12.
I'm going to take Baylor less than a touchdown on the road at Texas Tech.
The public really likes the Red Raiders.
LSU I had last week as a winner against Ole Miss.
Arkansas I had as a winner two weeks ago against Tennessee.
LSU, man, that was a hell of a football game.
You know, last week, while that Oregon, Ohio State game was going on, LSU, Ole Miss was going on.
I mean, two incredible football games.
I had LSU, they won the game.
I think it's a letdown spot.
I like Arkansas plus the three over LSU at home.
UCF is getting 13 and a half.
I'll buy the half point, get it to 14 at undefeated Iowa State.
Michigan State's a big sharp side and an anti-public side.
I'll take them plus five and a half at home against Iowa.
And then West Virginia, I'll try one more time.
Had them last week, not even close.
They're getting a short number at home against a very good Kansas State team.
I'll take West Virginia plus the three against K State.
Let's go to Sunday.
Jay Gruden gave you one of my smell test picks.
I didn't tell him.
I wanted to save it, but Jay's lock of the week is a smell test pick.
We're on the same side, finally.
Seems like we're on the opposite sides a lot.
But the three, actually the two biggest, the three biggest public plays are the bills against the Titans.
Remember, the bills are coming off a short week, an emotional win over the Jets on Monday Night Football.
They're laying nine to a team that really struggles offensively, but isn't bad defensively.
I'll take the Titans plus the nine.
The Giants are a massive anti-public play.
As bad as the Eagles looked last week, they're still getting a lot of public love.
I'll take the Giants at home plus the three.
And I did give out the Panthers earlier because Washington is a big public play,
but it looks now like the sharp money has switched and is on Washington as well.
So I'm off Carolina all together.
just two NFL plays, the Titans plus nine and the Giants plus three.
So tonight, Florida State plus three at Duke, Oklahoma State plus 10 at BYU,
tomorrow Auburn plus four, Louisville plus five, Baylor plus six, Arkansas plus three,
UCF plus 14, Michigan State plus five and a half, and West Virginia plus three.
And Sunday, Titans plus nine, Giants plus three.
So I'm going to leave you with just a couple of thoughts.
I know we talked a little bit about him yesterday,
but Daryl Green's jersey is getting retired.
It's part of the alumni weekend.
Remember, this is a weekend they used to refer to as homecoming weekend.
In fact, the very first homecoming weekend game was 2012 against the Panthers.
That was the game in which DeAngelo Williams, the Carolina running back,
after the game, after the Panthers had won the game, 21 to 13 over Washington,
which dropped Washington. I think that was the game, right, that dropped them to 3 and 6.
I think that was the game where Mike Shanahan said, we're going to consider all options in terms of the players,
and we're going to start looking towards next year to sort of evaluate the players before their buy week.
They fell to 3 and 6, 2113 at home against Carolina, homecoming weekend.
homecoming game. By the way, Mike was just frustrated and really wanted to fire his team up.
He had not legitimately bailed on the season. They still had seven games left. And as we know,
after the by week, they came back and won their last seven games and won the NFC East.
But DeAngelo Williams after the game, I was looking for this sound. I just can't find it
anywhere. I used to have it. I don't know where it went. But anyway, DeAngelio,
Angela Williams said after the game, he said, I saw the program. I saw that they were calling us the
homecoming game. The homecoming game, he said, in the pros, I was pissed. Yeah, we're no homecoming
opponent. And they stopped calling it the homecoming game. I think that was a, I don't know if that
was a Bruce Allen idea or somebody out there, a Dan Snyder idea out there. It was a dumb idea.
They eventually moved it to Alumni Weekend, which doesn't offend the opponent. And Alumni Weekend,
this weekend, is going to feature Darrell Green's jersey being retired. I did play for you
yesterday at the end of the show. I'm not sure if you caught it or not. But I tag some, you know, play-by-play,
memorable play-by-play to the end of the podcast.
You know, not every day, but a lot of days.
And I gave you the punt return at Chicago.
That is the most memorable play of Daryl Green's career.
It happened on special teams.
We know as longtime Redskinned fans what Daryl Green was as a punt returner.
Gibbs just didn't want to use him as a full-time punt returner because he was so valuable as a corner.
But that punt return against Chicago in January of 1988, the 87 season, the playoffs, gave Washington a 2114 lead.
They went on to win that game 2117.
I consider that play to be the third most memorable play in franchise history.
Number one's easy, Rigo's fourth and won in Super Bowl 17.
Number two, for me, would be, you know, the 82 championship game, January of 80.
Dexter, you know, bats the Gary Hogaume pass up into the air. Dary Grant picks it off. Touchdown,
Washington cements the NFC title game with a 3117 win. And three would be the Daryl Green punt return.
That's the play of his career. But God, he had so many memorable plays. And I'm going to leave you with a couple of them on the way out. I'll put him together.
Number two on the list is probably him getting in the way and breaking up the pass in the 87 championship game at RFK against the Vikings when Wade Wilson tried to hit Darren Nelson on fourth and four at the goal line.
And that basically, you know, sent the skins to Super Bowl 22. Gibbs was on his knees before that play.
And then you have the play that launched his career, the first game of his career,
Monday night football, September 1983.
It's the Cowboys in town to kick off the Monday night schedule.
The place is just bananas all night long.
Washington blew it 23 to 3 lead in that game and lost 31 to 30.
But that was the night that Darrell Green ran down Tony Dorset.
Memorable play.
In a playoff game in 86, a wild card game against the Rams at RFK,
Eric Dickerson broke through the line of scrimmage,
had eight yards on Daryl Green, and he caught him.
That was a memorable play.
There was a pick six in 95 against Scott Mitchell and the Lions in overtime that he returned.
Those are some of the plays I'm going to leave you with going out of the show today.
There were others, though.
He had a pick six in the NFC title game against Detroit.
He had a pick six in the playoff game in 83 against the race.
Rams. He just had a lot of memorable plays in a 20-year career that honestly is right there on the Mount Rushmore, in the Mount Rushmore discussion of the greatest players to ever play for this franchise.
I think we talked about this on yesterday's show. If we didn't, and I'm, if we did, and I'm repeating myself, I apologize.
But to me, it's Baugh, it is sunny, it is Daryl Green, and it is John Riggins.
That is the Mount Rushmore of all-time Redskins, players.
You know, if you were going to include coaches, obviously Gibbs would be on the Mount Rushmore of, you know, players coaches.
But players, Darrell Green's on it.
He's the greatest defensive player in franchise history.
and he just really made an incredible mark on not only this franchise, but this city for 20 years.
It really carried himself publicly in a way that just, I think, made everybody proud to be a fan of his and a fan of the team.
His jersey 100% deserved to be the next one to go into that status.
And next year for me, it would be Rigo.
And Charlie Taylor and Art Munk are the other two that have to be retired.
There are three jerseys left that need to be retired.
Charlie Taylor, Art Munk, John Riggins.
I think Riggos should go in next year.
I have no problem with Daryl Greens going in before Rigo.
But Rigo, I think, should be next.
Sunny and Daryl Green, that's fine.
You know, the Sean Taylor thing, I'm not going to get into that conversation now.
Bobby Mitchell, of course, for so many obvious reasons being the first after they decided to retire jerseys again after Sammy Boz was the only one that had been retired forever.
But yeah, congrats to Darrell Green. Just an incredible career. 42 years old and probably was still the fastest man in the NFL.
So I'll leave you just in succession. I think the five most men.
memorable plays of Daryl Green's career. And I'll put them in order of what I would consider to be
the most memorable to the fifth most memorable. So enjoy that to end the show. Look, the audio is the
best you can do on YouTube from these old games from the 80s and 90s. But enjoy that. And I will
be back after the Carolina Washington game with a recap of hopefully the game that gets Washington
to five and two.
Enjoy the football this weekend.
Darrell Green goes back deep for Washington.
Barnhart hunting against the wind out of his own in zone.
Draw play, Dorset, and look out.
Uh-oh, this could be bye-bye.
He has great speed.
Down the sideline, Tony Dorset, and look who caught him.
And Tony Dorset goes down, only one man in the field.
Could catch him Darrell Green, the world-class.
runner from Texas A&I. He did make up some ground too, Frank.
It was a great football play.
96 yards for a touchdown and probably inside the 35 for a field ball trial.
Mitchell.
Oh!
