Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. It's official. Terry McCorren is holding out. The presenting sponsor of this show, as always,
Starting point is 00:00:17 Window Nation, 86690 Nation or WindowNation.com if you need new windows. Mention my name and I promise you they'll do a great job for you. I'm going no guests on this show today. Too much sound to play for you. from the Adam Peters Dan Quinn press conference from earlier today. That was hours before it became official that Terry was a no-show and a training camp holdout. Tommy's off today. He is in Wednesday and Friday of this week.
Starting point is 00:00:50 So tomorrow and Friday for Tommy, FYI Maryland basketball fans, new head coach Buzz Williams is scheduled to be on the show for the first time on Thursday. Let's get to it. With all the veterans needing to report to training camp today for the conditioning test that marks the official beginning of Washington's 2025 training camp in Ashburn, the rookies were already there. Terry was the only player on the 90-man training camp roster not to report. I thought a hold-in was a much better bet than a hold-out. It's going to cost Terry 50. $50,000 a day for every day he misses. So holding in would have meant that he would have been in Ashburn, but not been a participant for practices. That would have likely resulted in him being able to avoid being fined, but not being there 50K a day.
Starting point is 00:01:53 So this is now officially a standoff. It's easy to have an agent leak information about, how unhappy his player is, you know, a month before training camp begins. You know, it's not that big of a deal when a player says directly in a 35-minute press conference, how undervalued he feels he is. It's not even that big of a deal to miss a few mandatory mini-camp days in June. The first real indication of a true contractual standoff is holding out of training camp. And let's face it, for Terry McClorn to hold out to not be there for his teammates,
Starting point is 00:02:37 to not be there to begin preparation for a season that is the most anticipated season in 25 years, at least in this town, for him to not be a part of it from the beginning, from the jump. Knowing what we know about Terry's character and his team first mentality, things must be at this moment pretty bleak. You know, not unfixable, of course. I still expect a deal to get done at some point and for both sides when the deal is done to tell the world how much they love each other
Starting point is 00:03:16 and that this was just business. However, you know, Terry's long-winded press conference from what, a week ago or almost a week ago, where he expressed major frustration, anger, and really more than anything else. You know, he was hurt, and you could sense that. You combined that with him no-showing on the first day of camp, it likely means things really aren't good right now. Because this is so not Terry.
Starting point is 00:03:50 You know, we know how team first he is. for it to come to this for him is not a great sign. Now, maybe it's a one-day thing for him to just make a point, and he'll be here tomorrow. Who knows? I thought he made his point last week. This seems like something where he really feels like he's not being treated fairly, that this process is unfair to him. Look, I don't have a major ground.
Starting point is 00:04:23 with him doing this. He is under contract. Let's not forget that. And there are other players and other situations where I personally might not be as nice or lenient in my discussion of a player holding out with one year left on his deal. But Terry's a unique situation. For him to do this, he definitely feels like he's being treated unfairly. So I respect Terry's position. I also, though, continue to lean in the direction of trusting the team that they're doing the right thing for the team. You know, sometimes both sides are right. Sometimes both sides can make compelling cases for their positions and, you know, they're reasonable even though the positions are far apart from each other. That would seem to be where we are right now. Jeremy Fowler, remember, and I
Starting point is 00:05:19 mentioned this on the show yesterday, I think is pretty much the only guy out there that's reported dollars, you know, and contract offers. He said over the weekend that if 30 million is what McLorne is asking for, which is very reasonable from his perspective, the two sides do not appear close. He said, the question is, are they, meaning Washington, willing to meet this market that's gotten crazy where players are making 30 to 35 million per year at receiver. My sense is that they're not even close to that. And McLaren senses that, which is why he's spoken out publicly. And today, he spoke with his actions by not showing up.
Starting point is 00:06:09 So I respect what Terry's doing here. I think in many cases I wouldn't feel that way. But you know it's bad for him to not be there from his standpoint. But I'm also trusting in the team. I know that's splitting the middle and fence straddling and all of that, but I actually trust that the team knows what they're doing. But I also have empathy for Terry's situation where he feels like the offers so far aren't anywhere near what he thinks he's worth. So this morning, Adam Peters and Dan Quinn held, you know, a first day of camp joint press conference.
Starting point is 00:06:56 And there was a lot on Terry. I'm going to play it chronologically. And it was all Peters on Terry McLaurin. He handled all of the Terry McLaren questions. There was one question to Dan Quinn where the question was, you know, how will you deal without him if he's not there? and Quinn said we're not going to deal with hypotheticals. Well, he's not there now, but that was this morning. But the first soundbite was a super short soundbite
Starting point is 00:07:27 where John Kime asks Adam Peters about, you know, whether or not Terry will report or not report. Of course, we now know he did not report, but I still want you to hear what Peters said earlier today. What has been communicated to you about Terry, whether reporting or not reporting, what's been communicated to you about him? Yeah, we haven't spoken about that, but just like with really all of our players, we're expecting everybody to be here today.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Well, there was one person that did not show up today, Adam Peters. This was John Kimes' follow-up question, and you'll hear what Adam Peters says more on Terry here. And then for both of you, he talked a lot last week about his situation, a lot of of frustration. He talked about wanting to feel valued. I'm curious what you guys thought about that and then, Edd, if you can talk about where things do stand with him as far as an extension. Yeah, I mean, first, I think, without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much. And we knew that coming in and we knew that even more after spending a year
Starting point is 00:08:34 with him. In terms of where we're at, we've had conversations recently and we'll look to have some more conversations and we're going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done. So a bit of a reveal there from Adam Peters, I think, at the end of that answer, when he said, quote, we've had conversations recently. Remember, it wasn't even a week ago where Terry talked about not having any contact with the team for a month. So for Adam Peters to describe conversations recently, that tells me that they are talking again, or at least they have talked since Terry's press conference last week. And I also think that the answer where he talks about Terry being valued in this building is really a response to Terry talking about being
Starting point is 00:09:28 undervalued. I think that that was on purpose for him to speak. in terms of, quote, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much. The next Adam Peters soundbite that I want to play is an interesting one. It was David Aldridge talking about the intricacies of a contract negotiation like this one. This is what Peter said. For Adam, you have a lot of moving parts with Terry. you have history, you have future, you have philosophy. I wonder where all of those points meet for you and the organization in terms of trying to find a deal that's fair for the organization,
Starting point is 00:10:17 but also fair to Terry and what he means to the team. Yeah, that's always probably the tricky part of any negotiation is figuring all that out. And, you know, in terms of understanding the market, understanding, our team, understanding, you know, our financial situation and all that. But, you know, I don't think I've been a part of a negotiation where it's gone. It's been really linear and smooth and everything like that. But I think, you know, understanding where they're at and understanding where we're at and trying to close that gap and coming to something is really the kind of all the nuance of it
Starting point is 00:10:57 and staying really above board and, you know, negotiating in good faith. All those things come together. and that's how you come to a deal. So as long as it fits in the construct of what you want to do and how you want to build it and what the player would, Terry in this instance, is comfortable with. So that's what we're working towards
Starting point is 00:11:19 and we're having some good conversations and we'll continue to. So keep something in mind every time you hear Adam Peters talk about this Terry situation. And this may be the last time that we hear anything from Adam Peters because I don't think he'll hold another press conference until when, maybe the end of the season, or maybe right at the beginning of the regular season, I forget.
Starting point is 00:11:43 But this is his first big deal as a general manager. He has not done a contract like this as the final say-so in an organization. He's been a part of big contract negotiations in San Francisco, but this is his first major deal as a general manager. And I'm not suggesting that inexperience is a part of this standoff. I'm not because they've got Lance Newmark there. They've got Brandon Sossna who's handling salary cap stuff. It's a pretty accomplished front office, just not, you know, in terms of experience at the general manager position,
Starting point is 00:12:27 other than the last year. But I thought his answer, while not necessarily revealing in any way, you know, he kind of laid it out. You know, it's tricky. You know, you got to understand the market. You got to understand the team. You got to understand the team's financial situation. By the way, I don't think he was referring to, you know, any sort of cash-strapped situation for the team. I have discussed how much money they've laid out in two years, $6 billion for the team,
Starting point is 00:13:00 hundred million for the existing stadium. They've got a big commitment coming at some point for the new stadium. And they haven't done big deals, you know, a lot of short-term deals, a lot of low dollar value deals. They extended Sam Cosmi last off-season, but nothing close to this deal for Terry. You know, I've thrown that out there just as I'm curious if, you know, maybe they're waiting to benefit from not having to put the cash out right away or making sure that there's not another big expenditure, T.J. Watt, Trey Hendrickson, who knows what they may have been thinking all along the way. But yeah, there's a lot that goes into it. I thought it was interesting that he said, I've been a part of, he said, I don't think I've been a part of a negotiation where
Starting point is 00:13:53 it's been really linear and smooth. And then, And, you know, he said, you know, staying really above board and negotiating in good faith, you know, is important. All those things come together and that's how you come to a deal. So as long as it fits in the construct of what you want to do and how you want to build it and what the player in Terry in this instance is comfortable with, that's what you're working towards. Look, his responsibility is to do what's in the best interest of the team. and something I've mentioned many times, and it doesn't apply 100% to this particular negotiation. But nine times out of 10, you're not negotiating a new deal based on what the player has already done. It's about what the player will do during those contract extension years.
Starting point is 00:14:51 The thing that makes Terry a bit unique is that he's been a big part, of more than just the on-the-field success. He's been a big part of the off-the-field success. He's a very popular player among fans. He's a very popular player among teammates. So how this gets treated, how he gets treated, is a part of this particular contract negotiation. And when he said, you know, you want to be above board
Starting point is 00:15:25 and you want to negotiate in good faith, and Terry in this instance, you want the player to be comfortable with it. You know, he's talking about your overall handling of any contract negotiation, but there's something specific about this one that I do think they understand. The next Adam Peters soundbite on Terry
Starting point is 00:15:47 was him answering a question about something we've talked about, which is kind of the style, Like, was this, was drawing this thing out, waiting this thing out, as San Francisco has done with many of their contract negotiations in recent years? Was this going to become part of the Adam Peters style in Washington? You know, I talked about Kittle and Bosa, Trent Williams, Brandon Ayyuk. These deals were all done late August, early September.
Starting point is 00:16:21 I mean, right before the regular season was about to be. begin? Is this going to be the style of contract negotiating? Here's what Adam Peter said. You'll hear the question as well. Adam, if I'm not mistaken, hey, I think you were involved with a couple of kind of longer holdouts in San Francisco, Bosa and Trent Williams that didn't end until like early September. Like, is this just part of the process for you? Are you calm about it? Or what's the sense of urgency when a deal hasn't gotten done and Trent campus starting? Yeah, I think, you know, those were, you know, I wasn't so much directly involved, but I was a part of it, so I understood how it went and, you know, a lot of contract. But I think that's just kind of the nature of our business.
Starting point is 00:17:10 You know, obviously you would like to get these things done quicker than longer, but it's not always going to happen that way. So I think the, you know, for me, just seeing those things secondhand, really, not firsthand, really, not firsthand. but understanding how that went, just understanding that, you know, first of all, we're dealing with a really, in the case of Terry, a really good player and a really good person. So really understanding that and never losing sight of that and making sure that, you know, every conversation we have is very, you know, straightforward, honest and in good faith. And just keeping that mindset throughout because there's going to be twists and turns, but just having, you know, that confidence and just understanding our goal. is to get a long-term deal done. And so just keeping focused on that. And whatever happens along the way,
Starting point is 00:18:03 just understand that he's a great player and we want to keep him there. So he didn't really answer the question as to whether or not the style of negotiating here in Washington will be similar to what it was in San Francisco. But there were a couple of interesting parts to the answer. When he said, in the case of Terry, a really good player and a really good person.
Starting point is 00:18:28 So really understanding that, never losing sight of that, making sure that, you know, every conversation we have is very straightforward, honest, and in good faith and just keeping that mindset throughout because there's going to be twists and turns, but just having the confidence and understanding our goals to get a long-term deal. He's really, you know, responding in many ways to, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:54 Terry's assertions last week that he didn't feel like everything was necessarily in good faith and that he wasn't being valued, you know, in an honest way. So you did have Adam Peters, not you know, directly, but more subtly answering some of the claims that Terry made last week. but yeah, nothing specific to, you know, a similar style here. You know, one of the things that they will benefit from is the longer this goes on, if they end up getting a deal done, the time in which the cash has to be, you know, put down at signing and then put into escrow for the rest of the deal, you know, having that happen, say,
Starting point is 00:19:51 two months after many of you would have preferred the deal to have been done is a benefit for the team. They're holding onto that cash for a much longer period of time. In business, you know, holding onto that cash is, you know, a float advantage. And so not having to put it out there and having the benefit of the cash working for them rather than working for him is a benefit. I don't know if that's part of why they're doing it this way. I would doubt that it is, but I'm just pointing out that the longer it takes for this deal to get done, if it is to get done, the longer, you know, Washington has to, you know, keep that money rather than giving it to him. That was really it on Terry, but some interesting stuff. Bottom line is he's not there. They expected everybody to report.
Starting point is 00:20:47 He said that at the beginning. I am surprised. I thought this would be a hold-in, not a hold-out. We'll see what happens tomorrow. But as of now, a legitimate holdout and a legitimate standoff between Terry McCluren, arguably the team's second best player, and certainly among, if not the most popular of players, is in a holdout. And we'll see, you know, fans take sides here.
Starting point is 00:21:17 But man, you know what? Overall, this is a lot better to have a contractual standoff with your team's best player coming off 12 wins, two playoff wins, an NFC title game appearance, and the expectations that the team can be back where they were last year and maybe a bit further in the upcoming season. This beats the hell out of wondering who the hell's going to throw to Terry McClorn. And remember this, he is under contract, and there is no way in hell that Terry is going to miss regular season play. I do think it's legitimately fair to be concerned that the more camp he misses, the more risk it poses to him. You see it all the time.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Players report late, and somehow there's a soft tissue injury or there's some sort of injury, and he's never right and he's never, you know, exactly what you wanted him to be heading into the season. So the sooner, the better for sure. But he's going to play this year. They're not trading him. And he gains nothing by being fined 50,000 a day times, you know, 20-something days of training camp, and then reporting before the season opener against the Giants. I don't see that happening at all.
Starting point is 00:22:40 I see him playing. I still see him playing. under an eventual deal that gets done. I think Dan Quinn revealed something about a player that maybe we haven't talked about that maybe they believe is going to perform at a much higher level than he did as a rookie. You'll hear what Quinn said about that player

Starting point is 00:25:01 I'll be in advance. You guys had a pretty distraction-free season last year for the most part. There's been some news lately involved in the stadium. The president weighing in on that. Does that get to any part of the building? Do you guys, is it something that you guys even think about, discuss, or what do you kind of react to the... Yeah, I'll take that.
Starting point is 00:25:21 So, you know, in terms, I mean, look, we're really focused on everything in the building and getting ready for this season and getting our guys in here and getting the building ready as I talked about with everything. And in terms of, you know, anything, whether it's the stadium or anything else, you know, those things aren't really, they don't come to our,
Starting point is 00:25:40 you know, they don't really make it to us. So we really just try to focus on what's going on in here and getting ready for the season. Ben Standig asking Adam Peters and Dan Quinn about what Trump wrote the other day on Truth Social, about killing the RFK deal if the team doesn't go back to the Redskins name. Yeah, Adam Peters and Dan Quinn, I'm sure have been involved in conversations about name and branding and stadium, etc. But this is not their area of responsibility. Their area of responsibility is winning.
Starting point is 00:26:19 The other stuff is for ownership and new team president, Mark Klaus. This segment of the show is brought to you by Window Nation. If you need new windows, how about 50% off all windows? And no interest charged if you choose to finance your purchase for five years. You won't pay any interest until the year 2030. Starting point is 00:27:25 86690 Nation window nation.com to get your free in-home estimate. This from Tim, Tim is a longtime listener and he DMed me the following. I've met Tim. Tim's a big skins fan. He lives in Indianapolis. actually. And he writes, in regards to the email that K.P. wrote, for those that didn't listen to yesterday's show, you can go back and listen to it. I did a lot on the Trump stuff, the name stuff. And there was, you know, the typical email from somebody, his name was KP, where, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:04 you're a loser when you talk about the name. This is a loser topic. Nobody cares about the name, etc, etc. And of course we know that's not true, but Tim writes, in regards to the KP email and the no one cares about the name, let me take it a step further. This goes beyond our fan base
Starting point is 00:28:28 where anyone with a pulse and a shred of common sense understands the magnitude of importance of the name and logo. But as a fan who lives out of the market in Indianapolis, I can tell you. you the number one topic of conversation by randoms, randos, who see me in my skins gear or
Starting point is 00:28:48 with my golf bag, it's the same every time and has been for the past five years. It's the name. Whether it be, I still can't believe you guys lost your name, or I hate that you guys lost your name, or I heard you're getting your name back. It's always in support of the name. These are nearly daily conversations I have with strangers who approach me, and long before the latest headlines. The conversation shifts to Jaden and the excitement of the team afterwards. Thank you, Tim, for that. Yeah, you know, great point. And I've experienced the exact same thing as well in recent years, especially with Dallas Giant and Eagle fans. You know, they lost something too, not equivalent to what we lost. But think about the tradition and the history, you know, they have with our team. And then
Starting point is 00:29:44 all of a sudden, you know, they're playing the commanders and they're playing the commanders wearing uniforms that don't look anything like the uniform matchups of the past. So, yeah, it's been uncomfortable and weird for them as well. And I've had many of those conversations and almost across the board. You know, a Dallas giant and Philly fan says, man, I wish you had your old name back and your old uniforms back. Imagine if we were still the Redskins.
Starting point is 00:30:14 And in the division, it was the Redskins, giants, eagles, and roadrunners. Dallas had to change their name from the Cowboys to the Roadrunners, and their iconic uniforms had to change to a different color, blue, and different silver, and, you know, different look and feel.
Starting point is 00:30:34 It would be strange for us. And we would feel like, man, that's not the team that we had this intense rivalry with for all of those years. That's branding, man. That's marketing. That's, you know, attachment and loyalty to a team, to a product. And what gets, you know, lost for everybody involved when something significant about that. brand changes. Really good point. And yes, I've had the exact same experiences. Thanks for that, Tim. All right. Back to the press conference from earlier this morning because I thought that there
Starting point is 00:31:18 was some information related to a specific player because his name was mentioned on two different occasions. So Dan Quinn was asked about kind of year one to year two growth, you know, in a team. Here was his answer. We had about, I guess, 10 rookies or so that were on the roster, maybe the 53, either at some point or most of the time last season. And that's pretty traditional that you see this jump happen from like year one to year two. So this spring, man, did we see it in Senate and we saw it in Newton and Jordan McGee and others. One I think that's unusual
Starting point is 00:32:00 and they'll get better, but Jaden and Mikey they kind of corrected it in season. They didn't have to wait till the off season. I think that speaks a little bit to their rarity. It's normal to fight your ass off in the season
Starting point is 00:32:16 and take your lumps and then in the off season, I got to get better at this, I got to work on this. Those two with the experience they had, they kind of a self-corrected faster. So I'm going to get to Dan Quinn's answer right there, because I actually think he said something that may be an indicator of something
Starting point is 00:32:34 in his very first press conference of the summer. But I want to first give you an annual reminder about this time of year, summer, training camp, preseason games, before real games are actually played hell. When the real games start, it's still fools gold, early in this season. But nothing is more fools gold than training camp practice videos or preseason games. We've made together mistakes over the years.
Starting point is 00:33:10 I think over the last 10 years I've given this annual reminder, which means, you know, pre-2015, I was a mark also for Marco Mitchell, for Marcus Mason. You know, everybody remembers guys like Antonio Gandy Golden and Thaddeus Moss and Mac Brown. It's just impossible for, you know, even if you're at practice every day, to decipher what is really going on. Other than things like injuries and contractual negotiations, which is real news. I do think, and I have felt this way for a while, that we can, learn from what people say, head coaches, coordinators, assistant coaches. And as we learn how
Starting point is 00:34:04 they communicate, and we've got a year of experience with this group, you can really start to dig into the way they say things. And, you know, I think last summer, I said something about Dan Quinn. He made a comment that not, you know, every area of the team where people, people are convinced they know what that area of the team is going to be like, that a lot of times it's just inaccurate. And I took that as, you know, we actually think our offensive line isn't going to be terrible. Because remember going into last year, it was like the offensive line's going to be terrible. And he gave you a bit of a hint.
Starting point is 00:34:46 And there were times in which he mentioned players by name. So annual reminder, this time of year is not. not for making huge declarations about anything. But I think in Dan Quinn's answer today to that question and the next question you will hear, I think we may have learned something. He mentioned players by name. You know, he said, you know, we had 10 rookies on the roster,
Starting point is 00:35:16 and it's pretty traditional that you'll see, you know, a jump happen from year one to year two, and man, did we see it this spring, with Senate, as in Ben's Senate, the tight end, with Newton as in Johnny Newton, with Jordan McGee and others. But he was specific to those three names. You know, he talked about Jaden Daniels and Mikey Sanry still, that they were super rare in that their jump year one to year two happened in year one, basically. But I thought it was interesting that he singled out Senate
Starting point is 00:35:53 Newton and McGee. We heard a lot about McGee last summer, and then there were injuries. So I think there have been some expectations about Jordan McGee entering year two as well. But then there was another question about this one was more about, you know, off-season growth, you know, how they develop, you know, camaraderie. And you'll hear one of the names that he's, you know, mentioned in this last answer mentioned again. When you ask the question of like what did I see on the field, like on the offensive side, like Senate and Coleman, they jumped out to me in some different ways, Brandon moving inside the guard and like putting in the work to do that.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Senate all coming off a shoulder surgery, he rehabbed so hard where during that offseason part, he and Sam were two of the ones we saw every day still while they were getting themselves ready. and I saw that confidence come out onto the field. So in two different Dan Quinn answers today, in a very positive light, we heard Ben Sinit's name. By the way, in that answer, I think we may have learned. Maybe I just missed this. I did Google it to see if anybody had reported that Ben Sinit was having
Starting point is 00:37:14 off-season shoulder surgery. He got injured in the Tampa Bay playoff game. He injured his shoulder during that game. but I couldn't find any reports that he was having off-season shoulder surgery. So that may have been news from Dan Quinn. Unless, you know, I completely missed it and it's not available on the internet. I don't know. But I thought it was interesting, and I made note of it as I was listening to the press conference live,
Starting point is 00:37:43 that he's mentioned Ben Senate a couple of times here in very positive, you know, answers. You know, the first go around, you know, year one to year two, you know, you really saw it in this spring. And then in this particular answer, you know, him talking about, you know, Senate and Coleman, you know, they jumped out to him in different ways. And he talked about the rehabbing off the shoulder surgery. And then they saw that confidence come out onto the field. So keep an eye on the 2024 second round pick out of Kansas State, who, let's face it, did not make much of an impact last year as a rookie, but most rookies don't make a major impact in their first year. And I've been talking about that a lot during this offseason,
Starting point is 00:38:33 that as much as people like to focus on the most recent draft, really the most important draft to focus on is the draft from the year before, because most players who end up becoming good players, you start to see it in year two, and maybe that will be the case with the six-foot-four-inch, 250-pound, you know, coolly look-alike, in terms of style of play. Yeah, Ben Sinait, you know, he had not really many moments in the season last year. Ended up having the fake punt catch from Tressaway in the championship. championship game against Philadelphia for a first down. So I just thought that that was interesting.
Starting point is 00:39:24 There were other names that Quinn mentioned, but he did not mention anybody's name twice or actually three times in mentioning the shoulder surgery as he did with Ben Sinit. There was more from Peters and Quinn. I'll finish up with some of what Peters said about Von Miller and what he said. and what he said about building a roster around Jaden's rookie contract. We'll get to that and more after these words from a few of our sponsors. Hey guys, we've reached that point on the sports calendar where it is all about baseball. Basketball's in the rearview mirror.

Starting point is 00:41:26 So the guys are doing their physicals today, and so I can give you a follow-up of where he's at tomorrow, but he's really hitting all the markers, Nicky, that we had set, you know, that we'd hope to see. Dan Quinn on Sam Cosmi's knee injury recovery timeline. Remember Sam tore his ACL in the playoff win in Detroit. It sounds like we'll get something more definitive tomorrow. I know people have talked about in terms of the ACL injury and when it happened, that a normal timeline would have him back on the field in early October. We'll see what Dan Quinn says tomorrow.

Starting point is 00:42:44 So Von Miller was added last week. This was Adam Peters talking about why Von Miller and why Von Miller now. Yeah, I think just in our conversations with DQ and myself and the staff, we did see, you know, past rest there was something we still wanted to add throughout the time. During free agency, we looked at a few guys and didn't work out. But we save some money aside, really, in order to do this and find out the best guy out there. And I've had a lot of history with Vaughn and know the type of person he is. Obviously, his play speaks for himself.
Starting point is 00:43:26 And when he turned on the tape from last year, I was shocked to see how good he still was and how well he got off the ball and just what type of impact he had on the field. and knowing the type of impact he had in the locker room in Denver and then getting unsolicited calls from the teams that he's been on since then talking about what a great guy is that really made it, you know, a really easy decision for us to bring him in. We brought him in a couple weeks ago or I don't know, been a few weeks now, but had a great meeting with him and just knew he was the right guy to bring in,
Starting point is 00:44:01 so we were thrilled to have him. Adam Peters shocked to see how good Von Miller, Miller still was when he turned on the tape from last year. How well he got off the ball? What type of impact he had on the field? Yeah, we talked about this last week when Miller was reportedly going to sign that at times last year, he looked like Von Miller. His get-off ability, his pass rush win rate.
Starting point is 00:44:30 Yeah, he's 36 years old, but he can still get after the passer, especially as a dedicated situational pass rusher. Keep in mind, too, he missed the first four games of last year. He was suspended for violating the league's personal conduct policy. More on that in a moment because Adam Peters was asked about that. But the early part of his answer I wanted to focus on here for just a moment, because he talked about sort of the off-season process needing a pass rusher. and wanting to add a pass rusher throughout the off-season.
Starting point is 00:45:10 And he said during free agency, we looked to add a few guys and it didn't work out. But we saved money aside really in order to do this and find the best guy out there. So in terms of the guys that they looked to add and it didn't work out, first of all, there would have been interest in Miles Garrett had he been made available. I think going back to the beginning of the offseason, there was interest in Trey Hendrickson, but the asking price was too high. But in terms of free agents, I know they had an interest in Joey Bosa, who ended up signing in Buffalo. I'm pretty sure they had an interest in DeMarcus Lawrence, and I think maybe even in Josh Sweat and Harold Landry.
Starting point is 00:45:56 But definitely Bosa and DeMarcus Lawrence. I think those were, you know, guys that he was referring to when he said, we looked to add a few guys, and it did not work out. He's a big Von Miller fan. He's excited. Look, the $6.1 million for a year with $4.4 million in incentives, you know, isn't the, you know, it's far from the league minimum for a player of his age. You know, they gave him a little bit more than that, you know, so there are some expectations with him.
Starting point is 00:46:29 no doubt heading into next year, and they've got a need for him to produce. Now, he was asked about the incident from a few years ago where he was accused of abusing a pregnant girlfriend. There was a warrant out for his arrest. He ultimately turned himself in. He was released on $5,000 bond, and the charges were eventually dropped. But the league did suspend him for the first four games last year without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Adam Peters was asked about the challenges of signing a player with this in his recent background. For Adam, you mentioned your past relationship with Von Miller and his kind of value in the locker room, but from the outside looking in, he's also someone who's had a couple of off-field
Starting point is 00:47:23 suspensions in the past. So when you're maybe talking to fans, how heavily do you, weigh those kind of off-field concerns and try to relay that to fans when you're making those kinds of decisions? Yeah, it's a great question and certainly, you know, there's a lot of people, a lot of players, you know, you look into their, we always look into everybody's background, right? And some are more public than others, but, you know, there's always things where people make mistakes. We're all human beings. And you look at those each kind of individually, you know, each situation individually try to get the most information you can and make the decision based off that.
Starting point is 00:48:02 It's not always, you know, what you read. It's not always, you know, what you hear first off. Just we all know that in the news. You really got to do your own work and we have a lot of people that do that for us. And then you either are comfortable with it or you're not. And with Vaughn, knowing the type of person he is, knowing, you know, the nature of situations, we felt really comfortable with that and we did a lot of research to back that. So there you go. Adam Peters comfortable with the signing of Von Miller. They did their research, it sounds like. You know, I was thinking about something earlier today and I actually discussed it on radio with Ben Standing today. And that is, you know, a year ago, this franchise doesn't sign Von Miller. A year ago, this team
Starting point is 00:48:49 probably doesn't trade for Laramie Tunsell. And I'm not talking about the cost associated with it. That may be the reason they wouldn't have done it. But, you know, Tunsell was part of an offensive line that really struggled in Houston this year. And some of the discussion about Tunsell was that the chemistry wasn't right with him on that particular offensive line. He's clearly the most gifted and the most talented, but he led the league in penalties. And something was a bit off in Houston with Tunsell, which is why he was available. The team last year probably wouldn't have signed Debo Samuel, probably wouldn't have traded for Marshawn Latimore. They were trying to establish a culture.
Starting point is 00:49:32 They also had no idea how good they would be. This year's completely different. They're going for it. And they are taking maybe, I'm not saying massive risks with some of their signings, but just more risk than they would have taken in year one. All right, there's one more soundbite from today's press conference that I wanted to play for. you. Peters was asked about taking advantage of this window that we all talk about, which is the elite quarterback, if you will, on a rookie contract. You'll hear the question and you'll hear Adam's answer here. I'm sure coach would hate saying win now because every season is a win now
Starting point is 00:50:14 season. But the moves that you guys made this offseason, trading for Debo, trading for Laramie, signing Vaughn, those are all very, you know, trying to cat. capitalized off of last season, when you're looking at building this roster to contend, how much do you weigh Jaden's contract, whereas how valuable it is now and how much he's probably going to be making in a few years? Yeah, that's a good question too. I think, you know, you always want to build your roster to win now and then win in the future. And I think the moves that we made, those allow us to do both, really, you know, with the nature of those, whether the deals or the contracts or,
Starting point is 00:50:53 or however you say it. But, you know, we're always looking to feel as good of a team as we can every year. And however we can do that, we'll do that. And without mortgaging in the future in terms of Jayden's, he's on his rookie deal. So that does give us more financial flexibility. But we were just talking about this the other day. I mean, out of the four teams that were in the championship game, we were the only one that had a quarterback on his rookie contract still.
Starting point is 00:51:19 So it's still possible to win after you pay a quarterback. And so, you know, whether you talk about a window, I don't know what a window is in terms of that. Hopefully our windows as long as we're here, and that's what we're building for. I liked what he said at the end there, that I don't even know what a window is in terms of that. Hopefully our windows, as long as we're here, and that's what we're building for. As long as you've got the elite quarterback, there will be multiple windows. They'll be different. This window will be different than the next window.
Starting point is 00:51:52 because of how much he'll count against the cap. But yeah, his points a good one. Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hertz, all recipients of massive contracts and their teams were vying for Super Bowl participation in the final four last year. All right. I know this was 100% today and Terry
Starting point is 00:52:21 and everything else. There are other things that are going on in sports, and we'll hit on some of those tomorrow when Tommy is with me. All right, back tomorrow.
