You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheon Show.
He is Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I'm here.
The show's presenting sponsors,
always, Window Nation, 86690 Nation,
Window Nation.com if you need new Windows.
Tommy is calling in from his car out in Ashburn.
Dan Quinn and Adam Peters spoke earlier,
and Terry McLaren just held his
first press conference
from the park anyway
there was the Eastern Motors
press conference about a month ago
but Tommy was there
for both of those
they had a practice in between
how you doing
you're really committed to the show
I appreciate that
I'm getting too old to be sitting in the park
a lot in Ashburn
on a week night on a weeknight
talking to you on the podcast
Yeah, I think a lot of us wonder at certain times, at a certain point, why am I still doing this or why am I still doing it this way?
But, you know, I think you recognize your responsibility to the people.
There are a lot of people that listen to this podcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Well, today's a Wednesday because you can't do tomorrow a Thursday.
But that you realize there are a lot of people that listen to this podcast because of you.
So we are very much appreciative that you're sitting in a parking lot at 6.30.
At least it's not dark yet.
You know, there was a time in my life where I wouldn't have given a shit, you know?
And this whole idea of commitment was a foreign concept to me.
What happened to me?
I don't know what happened to you.
Maybe, you know what?
I'd like to think that I happened to you.
That part of this is the relationship that we've developed over.
now 15 plus years, 16 years, actually.
I need to find either a napkin or a bucket right now.
I would bet there were a lot of times your employer was like,
where is he?
I mean, he did as he wrote his column and now we can't find him for three days.
At a matinee watching a movie somewhere.
You retreated to Leverro Island, many times.
times and Laverro Island had no technology and no way for you to be reached via satellite or any
other form.
All right.
So let's get to the story of the day.
And I probably should give a warning before we begin to discuss the details of Terry's
contract, which is the story of the day in this town, along with the fact that Dan Quinn and
Adam Peters talked about it.
primarily in their press conference and then Terry held his own press conference to talk about it.
After months and months of debating what this would look like, how it would get resolved,
who would get the better of the deal, I still don't get why some of you think,
yeah, let's just move on. It's done. There's nothing to see here. That's not how we're going to
handle it. We're going to talk about the details, which came out this morning. I think Ian Rappaport
may have been the first to get them.
And then all of the details are now up on spot track.
And the details for Terry are, you know, certainly much different than the agent put out
the other day, which is exactly what we thought was a possibility, which is why in the
midst of being, you know, asked to publicly apologize for being so wrong about the Terry deal.
I suggested that some of you wait a little bit until the details of the contract came out
because there was a red flag or four over the agent's version of the deal on Monday.
The big red flag being he didn't list the guaranteed dollars.
I said on the show yesterday, and I'm not going to pile on here.
That's not my intent to pile on those of you that really had a problem with.
the way we thought the deal would turn out and then, you know, had a problem with us pushing back
on Monday's announcement as incomplete. I'll try not to pile on, but the bottom line with this
deal is it just was not anywhere near what Terry and his agent thought they were worth.
And I'm not even talking about their initial, you know, crazy delusional numbers that
out there like 40 to 41 million average, you know, 75, 80, 90 million in guaranteed money.
Hell, yesterday I said, you know, anything less than 55 million is a team win.
You know, anything between 55 and 60 and guaranteed money is to draw.
Anything over 60 would be a Terry win.
I guessed it would come in somewhere around 50 to 55.
It was much less than that.
44.65 million dollars guaranteed with no guaranteed dollars beyond 2026.
This is essentially a two-year deal with the team having the ability to get out of it after the
second year. And at the same time, if Terry is what he thinks he is, which is a better built,
ready to last 31, 32, 33-year-old, he'll get paid, you know, moving forward.
the team will gladly pay as they go after the second year if Terry is still producing at a high level.
But this was a knockout in terms of the team getting pretty much what they wanted.
And I give Adam Peters a lot of credit.
I think this was a tough negotiation for his first big one.
I know Sam Cosmi they did last year, but this was high profile.
And, you know, there are a lot of places and a lot of GM.
in their first spot that may have caved, and it wouldn't have been the right thing for the team in
the team's future, which is another reason to sort of really delve into the details. We want to
see what kind of negotiator, what kind of general manager Adam Peters is in the way he'll, you know,
put a roster together. But this was a really good team deal. The team clearly won the negotiation.
With that said, my personal view is that Terry won two.
Now, they'll say and they did say that they're super happy with it.
This isn't anywhere near what they thought was fair market value.
Hell, even SpotTrack said fair market value was 50 million in guaranteed money.
So it came in less than that.
The Aavs at 29 million, but again, you know, the G.
guarantee dollars are what you want to look at. But I think as I've sat here and advocated for months
on end, that Terry was not going to have an opportunity to get, and I kept using $50 million as the
example, I felt like Terry's best opportunity to put a lot of money into the bank one more time
was here. And the team did not have to do this. They were not obligated to do this. They did it
because they like Terry, because they think Terry is a really good player and that he's very
important to the team. That's why they did it. Terry thought not only should they do it,
but they should do it and treat him like he is an elite receiver who has also been an
incredible trooper for years here during, you know, the dark ages of the team. I think the team
did very well, I think, and I know they feel like they did well on this deal.
I do think that it probably got to the point where it became a take it or leave it very recently.
And I think Terry did the right thing by taking it.
I really do. 44 million, 44.65 million.
And if he is Terry McCorn beyond 2026 in terms of his production on the field,
he'll make a lot more than that moving forward.
So on some level, I think Terry won as well.
he just didn't win the negotiation, he and his agent.
But I think, you know, getting this offer, first of all, you know, offered to him, actually given to him,
and then ultimately him making the decision to accept it rather than to be frustrated and, you know,
potentially threaten hold out or play on the final year of his deal unhappy, even though I think he's a pro's pro and he would have handled it well.
Yeah.
Look, I
You know, like with
the Sam Hal after one game against the Cowboys
at the end of a regular season,
like with Eric B. Enemy, who nobody in the league
wanted, you just got to
wait on some of these things.
We're here to coach you up a little bit
every once in a while. Take the coaching. Be coachable.
But that's all I have.
Anyway, yeah. And then
Tommy was there for the press conferences.
I've watched a significant part of them.
But anyway, what did you think, Tom?
You know, for a guy who wasn't going to say anything about it,
you just said a lot.
I know.
I know.
I knew exactly what I was doing.
So what did you think when you saw the deal this morning?
Well, I thought of you, and I thought that you were right.
You were right about this, that, you know, that management felt they had to leverage all throughout this thing.
And one thing I also thought of, and oh, yes, and come across that way in a press conference,
Adam Peters is a wartime concierge.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes.
He's a mob boss.
He's impressive, though, too, don't you think?
because he does it without you know he's knowing that he's doing it to you.
Yes, yes.
But he is a mob boss, and you're right, this is a test.
This was, besides the quarterback who is, you know, just, again, the son.
Terry McLaren is the most beloved player for this franchise for the past five, six years now.
And he went toe to toe with him and came out on top.
they don't like to think of it that way.
You know, everyone's supposed to be happy.
And there was a lot of, and Terry McCorrence talked,
if you had the over on the words love, happy, or high level,
you were a winner.
Okay.
A lot of that, a lot of love, a lot of happy,
and a lot of use of the words high level.
But the team came out exactly where you.
you would want them to be on this if you're a commander's fan.
I think that's true.
And again, I know that Terry and his agent, no matter what he said this afternoon,
they didn't get anywhere near what they thought he was worth.
I think ultimately he got a pretty good deal for the receiver that he is, the age that he is.
And I'm glad that he didn't get to the point where he was.
so hurt and so frustrated, he said,
fuck it, I'm just going to play this final year of my deal.
I think that would have been really something that he would have regretted,
$44.65 million.
And by the way, if he's right that he's got a lot of years left in him,
he'll learn a lot more than that.
But the team gets to, you know, pay him based on performance after two years,
and they'll gladly pay him more if in 2027, he's still a high-level player.
in 2028, he's still a high-level player.
I think ultimately, you know, everything worked out well for the franchise and for him.
And so he was never going to be unprofessional.
I never thought that would happen with him.
And, you know, I'm glad he said some of the things.
I thought he handled this press conference.
You were there.
I watched a lot of it.
I thought he handled it well.
I thought Adam Peters definitely handled his.
part well and
you know, let's go
win a Super Bowl because they've got
certainly enough talent offensively
and a quarterback
and at wide receiver now
to be as
good if not better than they were last year
on offense.
Yeah, he did mention
uncertainty. There were points of
uncertainty and
frustration and the unknowns
but he, when that
happened, he went to where
most athletes go to where they can't get the answers they want.
He went to God.
Yeah, there was a lot of God.
Yep.
Yeah.
Faith got him through this.
Okay?
And I'm not dismissing it.
I'm just saying that, you know, and he talked about, you know, he would say,
go home at night and he would, you know, look for the steps that God would, would have out for him.
And, you know, it's Adam Peters was God.
You know, one of the things that Adam Peters said, and Terry said it multiple times, Terry had a lot to do with this deal getting done, my belief.
I think it got to the point where it was difficult between the agent and the team.
Because even in Adam's opening remarks, he didn't even mention Buddy Baker.
He talked about the meetings that he had with Terry and how that helped things progress.
Terry talked about his agent and thanked his agent, but also talked about how he got an opportunity to learn and to sit with Adam Peters during all of this.
Terry's a mature player and he's smart.
And I think those, I would bet, I don't know this.
I would bet the conversations that Terry had with Adam Peters and company that got this deal done.
That's just a hunch.
I don't know if you felt the same way.
I didn't feel the same way, but that's not unreasonable to think that.
You know, Terry is a smart guy.
And ultimately, you know, for a wide receiver, he's a very unique figure in that he is very interested in being a solid citizen.
Yeah.
You know, he is not, he talked about at the end of his press conference, he talked about how he wears a hoodie out.
out on the field all the time.
And somebody was asking him about that.
I don't know the Genesis of Genesis and why they were asking him.
But he says he wears that because he doesn't want to be noticed.
He wants to be invisible.
He said that?
I missed that part.
That's interesting.
It was right at the end.
Hmm.
Yeah.
I'll tell you what.
He's not invisible during these press conferences.
He is thoughtful.
He is very much.
complete in his answers.
You know, I felt like today the one super long answer about the age data and analytics,
that clearly is a part of this whole process that I think really kind of irked him.
I mean, he talked about taking the screen pass 60 yards for a touchdown in Detroit in the
playoff game.
And by the way, he might be right on that.
He may be the outlier.
And I think he feels like he will be.
I think if anybody is, I think it's him.
He's not, he is not going to let anything get in the way of being prepared to play.
Okay, so there's not going to be any outside influences or, you know, or preparation that's going to slow him down.
Yeah.
So I think if, of all the candidates at that age, I think the best chance of being the outlier is a guy.
who's determined to work really hard.
Heading out of this.
Everybody said about the hoodie,
I don't want to be in the way.
I want to be low-key.
I'll tell you what,
he's been a lot less than low-key as a player on the field.
He has been very noticeable on the field,
and I think he'll continue to be.
I'm going to play the part of the press conference.
I think it was a John Kime question.
going out of this segment where John asks him really about his readiness and is there enough time?
Because I thought he covered both that, which is important.
And they all said that he's back just in time to have plenty of time to be ready for the opener.
I don't see him being, you know, limited when we get to the giant game on September 7th.
And nobody indicated that today, including him.
But he took that answer and went in a few different directions that I think.
thought were Terry at his most thoughtful during the press conference. So you'll hear that
heading out of this segment. Did you have anything else on, you know, the day to day,
which really was focused on Terry McCloran's deal, both, you know, in terms of learning what
the deal was and then hearing from all participants? Well, again, it was a reminder as to how
different the world is out here at this park. I've spent so many days and years and hours at this place
where, you know, I was, I was covering explosions, you know, and one explosion after another,
and the cleanup after the explosions. Yeah. And this was not, this was not a cleanup. There was no
explosion. This was like this was a hoody press conference. It was very low key.
Yeah. All right. We got a lot more show to get to, including a former Washington quarterback who was released yesterday,
who actually might make a good waiver wire acquisition for the team, especially considering that Marcus Mariotta is not 100% healthy.
We'll get to that and a lot more.
But before we get to that,
I do want you to hear this one Terry McLaren answer
from a question asked by John Kime
just a little while ago.
Terry, first congratulations.
Thank you.
Was there a point, what was a low point
and was there a point where you thought
maybe it's not going to happen?
Yeah.
I mean, obviously, when you get to a point
where you're here for a little over,
kind of lost track of the day,
but you're here for a little while, you're not out on the practice field, and, you know, things may not progress what you would like for them to progress.
And, again, like, I don't think there's everybody's situation is unique and different.
So I never tried to look at this person's situation.
It's like, ah, this is how I handle it.
I just tried to stay true to myself, but also have the open conversations that were afforded to me, both with my agent buddy.
But he was having great conversations with Adam.
You know, Adam gave me the opportunity to have multiple conversations with him.
DQ as well. So it was just a matter of getting on the same page. I appreciate them hearing me out and
being able to express what my worth is and what I bring to the table on the field and off the field as a
teammate and all those things. And, you know, in the end, they feel the exact same way. And so
to be in a position where you feel like you can advocate for yourself, you know, be educated
throughout this process was something that I took day by day to try to help get to this result.
There was definitely some unknowns. Obviously, you know, the trade request was, you know, something that I did. And, you know, full transparency. I told the front office this as well. Like, that wasn't something that I was doing for just like a leverage point or just to do it or let me call some hoopla. Like I try to be as intentional as possible. Am I perfect? No, I'm not. Are there some things that, you know, you think about that you maybe want to handle different or do better? Sure, that's any situation. But the most important part is the,
the communication that was very important throughout this process from start to finish,
you know, the way it ended was better than it started.
And was there a point for you, you know your body, you know what it takes to get ready,
that you said, I've got to be on the field by this time working to be ready for the opener.
Yeah, I mean, I think the timing worked out perfectly.
You know, we have essentially about two weeks for me to get acclimated with, you know,
football, like your helmet on, running routes, catching passes.
But to be honest, to a certain degree, it's kind of like riding a bike.
Like, I was out there today.
I had a lot of good reps out there.
I caught passes, and I was telling Jayden, it's like riding a bike.

So the 53-man final roster yesterday, all of the cuts were in by 4 o'clock.
You and I did the show is some of the cuts were coming in.
I thought it was, for the most part, you know, a day not only here, but around the league, Tommy,
that wasn't filled with, like, major names or major shockers or any kind of excitement.
You know, it's not my favorite day of the year to begin with, but you always see a big headline of somebody that, you know, was super surprising in terms of that player being cut.
I was glad to see.
I mean, for all I know, you know, this guy's performances and the, you know, in the training camp and preseason games means nothing and it probably does.
But I thought he looked like a player.
And that's Ale Cahoe, the kid from UCLA at linebacker, number 50.
He made the team. I would bet that he's the biggest surprise in terms of players that ended up making it.
Maybe Jacob Martin as well.
And I thought Jacori Brooks had a chance to make the 53, but they signed him back to the practice squad.
In fact, a lot of the practice squad are just yesterday's cuts.
But not a lot there.
And don't be surprised if something happens that's significant between now,
And next week, this time last year, it was Noah Brown, who was added to the roster.
So this is a dynamic, you know, situation every year.
And certainly they can talk about how much they love their roster right now.
And they do.
But there's always a chance a player that they really like becomes available.
And that player ends up on the roster.
But I guess Taylor Heineke getting released by the chance,
Chargers was a bit of a surprise in L.A.
Trey Lance made the team as the backup quarterback to Justin Herbert.
They didn't keep a third quarterback.
Taylor Heineke not only released, but as of right now, not signed to the Chargers
practice squad or picked up or signed anywhere else to this point.
I actually talked about this on radio and opened it up for calls.
Of course, Sabah was the first person to call in.
But a serious question.
Washington's got a quarterback in Marcus Marieta right now that has Achilles tendonitis.
There's a chance he may not be 100%.
And Josh Johnson, who they kept yesterday because of that, could be the backup quarterback.
Should they think about Taylor Heineke?
Well, I think they should.
I mean, don't you think that Taylor Heineke would fit into a Cliff Kingsbury offense?
I do.
Yes.
I think he would.
Yeah.
And to me, look, I think he's a backup quarterback in the league.
If you brought him in to be the third stringer or at least a temporary backup and then an eventual third stringer for hardly any money,
that's, I think you could do a lot worse.
Now, I think Josh, yeah, Josh Johnson's one of these guys that keeps showing up because apparently he's brilliant.
But so was Taylor Heineke.
I mean, this guy was a derivatives major when Scott Turner plucked him out of, what was it, Old Dominion, where he was taking derivatives courses, he was a math major?
Yeah.
He was laying on the couch.
Yeah.
Drinking what, drinking some light.
I forget what it was.
Look, I may not have been the biggest Taylor Heineke fan,
but that was always from a standpoint of he can't be your starter
if you want to be like a legitimately good football team.
And that's not what he is, but he is a backup in this league.
He is a backup.
Yeah, absolutely.
And I could see him.
You know, I don't think it'd be a problem at all for him to pick up an offense like Cliff Kingsbury.
And you're right.
they can't afford.
I mean, Marriota's physical status, if it's still in question going into next week,
you can't afford to do that.
You can't afford to have Josh Johnson as your backup.
I mean, you'd rather not.
Josh Johnson's played in a lot of football games, and he's certainly capable.
I know.
You don't want him as your backup having to start more than a game or two.
You'd say the same thing about Taylor Heineke.
I just think what you said at the very beginning.
I actually think Taylor Heineke is a perfect fit for what they do like Marcus Mariotes.
Same thing.
Yeah.
So, anyway.
Wouldn't that be funny?
Be hysterical.
That would be, in a way, that would be the ultimate final test of the change of the organization,
that they feel strong enough to bring.
back such a volatile figure, not to any fault of his own, just through the fan base.
And they bring him back here and, you know, to think, say, you know, we don't particularly
care how many people are Taylor Heeneke fans or not. We're bringing them back here because
we think he fits, you know, and they could just withstand and just be like water off their back.
Yeah, we don't care what his history was. We like them and we like
him as a backup quarterback.
Yeah, whereas before, it would be, you know, 20-minute Ron Rivera answers to why they're
bringing them back.
Yeah, and, you know, by the way, perfect culture fit.
Like, he is, you know, a player's favorite and has been at every stop.
Now, something we didn't talk about the other day was Sam Howell getting traded to Philadelphia.
Sam Hal was in Seattle last year. Sam Hal got signed by Minnesota in the offseason or got traded to Minnesota in the off season.
It didn't work in Minnesota. And Howie Roseman traded for Sam Hal. And he was asked about Sam Hal yesterday in the trade.
And he said, quote, we know the player really well, spent a lot of time on him coming out.
Ironically, the only college Thursday night game I've gone to in the last 10 years was Pitt against North Carolina.
And we ended up getting both of those quarterbacks, which is ironic, like I said.
Yeah, they drafted, you know, they ended up with Kenny Pickett.
They didn't draft Kenny Pickett.
But they ended up with Kenny Pickett.
And then they, now they end up with Sam Howell.
He said, we had done a lot of work on him coming out, saw him first hand as a starter with Washington.
and obviously he had tremendous success in those games,
had a lot of appreciation for him as a player and his talent level
and the person that he was after spending time with him.
He's a guy who's always on the radar just felt like for our team right now,
the hardest part for us is trying to balance the development of players,
the development of young players who we like
and doing whatever we can do to go out and defend our title.
Sam Hal, if you remember, the two best games really of his season,
were the two Philadelphia games.
Yes, they were, yeah.
He threw for $2.90 and a touchdown no-picks in the overtime loss at Philly.
That was the game in which they decided not to go for two at the end of regulation
when he threw the touchdown pass to...
Was that Chris Samuel?
Who did he throw that touchdown pass to in the last play of the game?
Curtis Samuel, you mean.
Curtis Samuel.
Was it Jahan Dotson?
I'm looking it up.
I don't know.
I think it may have been Curtis Samuel.
It was Jahan Dotson.
It was Jahan Dotson.
Wouldn't Minnesota feel the same way
that Philadelphia would feel about Sam, how?
I mean, I said when he went to Kevin O'Connell,
like if it doesn't work with Kevin O'Connell,
it's going to be tough working with almost anybody.
You know, it's like, you know, you put Kevin O'Connell up there for quarterbacks
with Sean and Kyle and some of the others.
But he had that great game against Philadelphia,
on the road and then had another incredible 39 of 52,
397 and 4 touchdowns in a 3831 loss at home to Philadelphia.
Yeah, I mean, you could say that those were the two best games of that season for him.
But there you go.
Why would Minnesota trade him and then turn around and sign Carson went?
I don't know, but a lot of ex-starting Washington quarterbacks are in the news here the last couple of days.
Look, I don't, Howie Roseman is, he's up there, man.
If he's not at the top of the list, he's in the top three.
I know.
And again, I get why Philly would do it.
I don't get why Minnesota would do it.
Would sign what Carson Wentz?
Yeah.
And get rid of Sam Howell.
Well, Minnesota's got a quarterback on their roster.
He's an undrafted free agent that they actually fell in love with.
He was the quarterback at Minnesota last year.
God, I'm forgetting his name.
I can picture him right now.
But I, let me find it.
Because I didn't pay real close attention to the Vikings, Sturon.
Oh, yeah, Max Brasmer.
Max Brasmer.
He was the quarterback at Minnesota.
I swear to God last year, every time I watched him, I said,
that guy looks like an NFL quarterback.
Well, he's the one that they essentially kept because I think they see him
as the eventual backup to J.J. McCarthy,
but they wanted a veteran, and obviously they thought they could get something for Sam Hal.
And Sam Hal apparently was terrible in camp and terrible in their opportunities,
whether it was joint practices or preseason games.
So, yeah.
My impression is that, you know, J.J. McCarthy's a little shaky.
Well, I don't know. He hasn't played a game yet in the NFL.
Right.
Yeah.
I know that.
He was not my guy coming out.
The source that came out of camp, I mean, that there was some uncertainty, as Terry McCorn would say.
Interesting. I haven't followed the J.J. McCarthy offseason training camp story.
We're going to find out Monday night opener on the.
road against the Bears and Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams.
J.J. McCarthy was picked 10th overall by the Vikings who traded into that spot.
He ended up being the fourth quarterback in that draft taken right after Caleb, Jaden,
Drake May Pennix Jr., fifth quarterback, and then Bo Nix was taken 12.
And there was a lot, there were a lot of people that loved J.J. McCarthy and thought
Washington could go J.J. McCarthy up until maybe a month before the draft.
You know who loved J.J. McCarthy was Logan Paulson, and I trust his evaluations.
I was not a big J.J. McCarthy college fan in terms of what he looked like at Michigan at times.
I mean, they won a game with him basically running the ball for like 37 straight plays in the second half at Penn State.
a couple of years ago. But yeah, I, uh, interesting. Sam Hal in Philly,
Roseman remembers the games he played against them, and Taylor Heineke is available. But as far as
the cut down, honestly, we'll see what happens. But I look at the roster as you got a great
quarterback. You have a really, I think, solid offensive football team when everybody's
healthy, that would include Sam Cosmy, an upgraded offensive line, an additional weapon in
Debo, who I think is going to have a big year and will more than make up for the losses of,
say, Diami Brown and Zekees and Jameson Crowder. You've got Terry now, you know, presumably
in better shape. I think he was always going to play professionally regardless.
And defensively, I think they feel confident that they've gotten better. I would say the two
areas in which, you know, there are questions. I mean, my biggest question is defense overall,
but, you know, depth in a lot of spots, including at wide receiver. And then, you know,
this is a fact. Washington is the oldest team in 12 years after the cut down to 53 in late
August, early September. 28.1 years of age and older. Now, they've got a 39-year-old. 39-year-old.
old quarterback and Josh Johnson on the roster.
They have a 35-year-old punter.
But they also have Bobby Wagner and Zach Hertz and
and Von Miller.
But their quarterback is just 25.
So feel good about that.
And like thinking about the, you know, where they started and where they ended up yesterday,
the biggest surprise is Brian Robinson, Jr.
or not being on the roster.
That's the biggest surprise.
And, you know,
Adam Peters was actually asked about that today.
And, you know, he said, basically, look,
we felt really good about the running back room,
and we were able to get something for Brian Robinson, Jr.,
because there was a market for him.
He wasn't going to be under contract next year.
And, by the way, $3.5 million they save by trading him.
So that's, to me,
I mean, am I missing one?
But that's the biggest surprise by far.
And you know, it's a shame he's leaving just when Washington is becoming a safe city.
That's too bad.
Well, you know, let's not get into that here today with you in your car and maybe having had a cocktail or two because that's a whole other subject.
But you know what?
Thankfully, on that day, he was injured but not seriously injured and recovered pretty quickly.
And had a couple of decent seasons, not great seasons, but decent seasons.
I was a Brian Robinson fan.
I liked him.
I didn't love him, but I liked him.
But he really, I think it was after the Baltimore game last year, he really fell off to me.
Well, he missed the Baltimore game last year.
That's it.
He missed the ball to
Yeah.
That's it.
Yeah.
That's it.
I knew it.
There was something wrong.
There was something wrong with that Baltimore game, wasn't there?
That's why he didn't play very well.
That is so big reason
why he did not play well
against Baltimore.
You know, some guys can play well when they're not playing.
Brian Robbins is not one of them.
We're doing this show together later than we have ever done it.
And it is not, it's not gone well, in my opinion.
but we still have one last segment to save it and we'll do our best after these words from a few of our sponsors.

Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Well, you know, I'm always selling.
I'm like, what's his name in Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross, always be closing.
Always be closing.
Yeah, even out here at the park, I was closing for Shelley's backroom at 1331 S Street, Northwest.
After the press conference, the Adam Peters and Dan Quinn press conference, I got a chance to pull Coach Quinn a side.
and ask him a question.
And while I was, before we started, he saw the cigars in my pocket.
And he said, boy, like, basically I wouldn't like one up now.
I said, well, you can have one if you want.
And then I went into my salespits for Shelly's.
I said, if you're a cigar guy, you've got to head to Shelly's Backroom.
You did.
Okay, you can find out about them at shelley's backroom.com on the web.
It's the place to go.
if you're a cigar guy.
I'm sure he had heard of it in this area.
Oh, of course he must have heard of it.
If he listened to his podcast,
I've heard of it.
Right.
I've heard of it.
I mean, I told him about, you know, the great comfortable chairs,
the eight, you know, high-definition television,
the great selection of cigars, the great food menu,
and the great camaraderie.
I point out to him, you know, you can be Dan Quinn and go in the shelley's,
And, you know, it's not like you won't be, you'll be mobbed.
It's the kind of place where people in your business, the business of sports,
go into, you know, and have a smoke.
Right.
And are relaxed.
And people leave them alone.
So it's really the perfect place for Dan Clinton.
I don't know if he bought into it or not.
I finally got to ask my question, but I gave him a little Shelley sales pitch.
Like I'm given to you right now, shelley's backroom.com.
I think Dan Quinn would fit in perfectly at Shelley's, no doubt.
Absolutely.
And not only that, he'd walk out of there.
He would text you and say, great recommendation.
All right.
Real quickly, mybooky.orgie.orgie.com is the place you want to go to to bet football this weekend, starting tomorrow night with the
first set of college games for Thursday night.
They're games Friday night.
So many big games on Saturday.
I will have shows Thursday and Friday, even though I am off of radio on Thursday and
Friday and I will have smell test picks for sure on Friday for the weekend and maybe
even one for tomorrow night and one on Friday night.
We'll see.
But the big game on Saturday, there are several big games on Saturday.
but right now, Ohio State, a two-point favorite over Penn State in a one-verses-two match-up.
And then later on at night in the other big heavyweight top 10 matchup, Clemson at home is a four-point favorite over LSU.
Week 1 NFL lines, they've been up for a while, but now they really start to hone in on what those numbers are going to be as we get near to week one.
and right now Washington is a six-point favorite over the Giants.
I'd seen it go to six and a half and seven in a couple of spots,
and that may have been because Terry was, you know, under contract for the longer term.
Right now, Washington, a six-point favorite over the Giants in the opener.
I'm going to tell you guys right now, the public's going to pound Washington in the opener.
And I may, right now, if this game were being played
played Sunday, I could almost guarantee you that Giants would be a smell test pick. But plus
six doesn't mean they're going to lose the game. We'll just root for them to win by less than six,
if that happens. No, that's the happiness hedge selection when you are betting against your
favorite team. And if you can split that difference, man, it is happy both sides. You're a winner
and your team won the game.

What are we going to do?
Oh, I wanted to mention this
because we had talked about this last year
when Tom Brady was doing his first year on Fox.
First year is the lead analyst
with Kevin Burkart on the number one team for Fox.
And the NFL put rules on what Brady could and couldn't do in preparation for the game that he had,
including, sorry, but you're not going to be able to sit down in the production meetings with coaches and players,
because you are an owner of an NFL team.
They did allow him to do it for the Super Bowl.
They've actually relaxed those rules, and they're now going to allow him to,
to be a part of production meetings with coaches and players,
but not attend practices.
Actually, I think that makes total sense.
What you don't want them out there doing
is you don't want him out there watching practices,
picking up on things.
You know, by the way, evaluating players as an owner of another NFL franchise.
But to me, it never made sense to exclude him from some conversations
with players and coaches before a game.
and it sounds like the NFL's moving in that direction.
So Brady's going to be able to be a bit more informed as the lead analyst on Fox.
I forget what you thought of Brady last year as an analyst.
Did you have an opinion?
I mentioned that it is a conflict of interest to have an owner as part of the broadcast booth.
And he's an active owner.
He's not a guy who just is looking for a seat in the owner's box.
Right.
you know, even though he's a minority owner, it's been clear from reports, he's very active.
But if you're an opposing team's coach and you tell something to Tom Brady in these meetings that you don't want him to know, then you're an idiot, you know?
Say that again?
No, it's like if you're a coach and Tom Brady is now in these production meetings.
Right.
And you're having conversations.
I mean, you're a dummy if you're going to tell Tom Brady anything that would come back to hurt you.
Right. Yeah.
I mean, you just, so I don't think it's that big of a deal now.
Yeah, I mean, you know this as much as I do.
These coaches and players tend to be a little bit more open with the game broadcasters.
The game broadcasters will typically use.
the information as part of the broadcast without directly attributing a lot of the stuff,
if it's sensitive.
But you, you know, during those pregame years where I was doing the pregame show, I would always
try to get the play-by-play or the analyst guy on the pregame show.
Because all due respect to all the other reporters, I always felt like, and I think coaches
have admitted this, for whatever reason, they're more comfortable at times because a lot
of those analysts or guys they know really well.
And even the play-by-play guys.
So you can sometimes learn.
These are league business partners
who are paying big money.
Yeah, true. That too. That too.
Yeah. Yeah.
So I'm sure the coaches are under
some level of orders to cooperate
as much as they feel comfortable with.
Yeah.
All right. Nats lost to the Yankees again today,
not the best of series for the Nats
and not a good outing for Cade Cavali today
who had had a couple of pretty good outings.
But today, just two and a third
gave up eight hits, seven earned runs
and four home runs,
including Judge who homered in the third.
Again, the wake of the 20th anniversary
of baseball in Washington
continues.
The weight of the 20th anniversary.
Wake.
Oh, the wake.
The wake of the 20th anniversary.
Right, right.
A wait.
Try to keep up.
Well, I mean, I didn't know what you were saying.
God, that was a fun summer.
You know, that was, it was like my second or third year at 980.
And that whole time was really about, were we really going to get baseball back?
I remember Mark Stern every day going down to those city council hearings because they held all those hearings and they were public, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yeah.
All right.
And they wound up winning 81 games that first year.
No one expected them to be good and they were in the wild card right up until the last month.
They were.
Yeah.
Alfonso Soriano had a big year.
No, that was not Soriano.
2005 was not Soriano.
Oh, sorry.
So that was the year they were 12 games above 500 at the midway.
Yes.
Yeah, okay.
Yes.
Soriano.
81 and 81.
Right.
Toriano came along the next year.
The next year.
Levin Hernandez was pitching for that team, though.
Yes, he was, and pitched very well for them.
Yeah.
They had Levan Hernandez, John Patterson.
Right.
and another guy who got busted for smuggling drugs in Mexico
later on.
I forget the guy's name.
But the three of them were three solid starters.
I think between the three of them, they won almost 50 games
as starting pitching, which was pretty good.
Yeah.
You know, so they had good starting pitching on that team.
I'm looking back at that team.
Esteban Louise.
Yeah, Louise.
guy. Yeah. Yeah.
Who was the closer? What was his name? Why my...
The closer was Chad. Chad Cordero, yeah. The chief. The chief. Yeah.
Yes. Chad Cordero. Do you know that that first year with baseball back,
I would listen to games on the radio in bed at night when they were like on the West Coast.
because I felt like I had missed a whole lifetime of listening to games on radio,
baseball games on radio, which I had.
So I listened to Charlie, and I forget who was doing, it wasn't Dave Jagler to begin with.
I don't think it was.
No, Dave Jackler didn't come along with 2007, I think.
But Charlie, I forget who.
Charlie was there from day one.
Yeah, Troy was there from day one, and I think Dave Shea was there in 2006.
And I'm not sure who was there in 2005 on the radio with Charlie.
Yeah, I just remember like, God, man, I wanted to experience everything about having a baseball team again after all of those years of not having it.
And I always loved listening to baseball and radio.
Like, I think I've told you this before that when I was before broadcasting, when I was on the road a lot,
and I spent a lot of time on the West Coast in San Francisco and in Los Angeles.
Angeles. And I would listen to
Vin Scully call games on the radio
if I'd just, I'd stay in the car
just to sit there and listen to a few
winnings of Vin Scully calling games. By the way,
it was Dave Shea. Charlie Slows and Dave
Shea in 2005 in the inaugural
season. On TV,
was it Mel Proctor?
Well, they weren't really on TV.
Right. Remember? Because there were some kind of
dispute with a conference.
Which is probably why I was listening to a lot of games.
It was Mel Proctor and Ron Darling.
Who was terrible, terrible, because no one told him what to do.
He got there on his first day and they put him on the air.
No training, nothing.
Now, he's become excellent.
He's become excellent analyst.
And he'll be the first one to tell you.
He was a disaster that first year.
But he had no idea.
There was, I mean, they were working for a network that just started up,
massing with a brand new network.
Right.
And they operated that way.
But those were the TV guys, Mel Proctor, who used to do the Orioles games, and Ron Darling.
Mel Proctor was so good, so good as a play-by-play guy.
You know, he did the first season for the bullets on radio after they,
championship season in 78 because Frank then became in 79 the lead Redskins announcer.
That was his first year, 1979.
78 was, I think it was Dan Loveter, the guy from Channel 7 did the games on radio.
And once Frank went to do the Skins games, Mel Proctor did the games on radio.
And Tommy, I was such a big Frank fan.
you know, listening to all those bullets games
because the home games weren't even, you know,
if you had to have like home team sports,
which we didn't have, you know, back then.
I don't even know if home team sports was around in 78, 79,
but I would listen to every bullets home game.
The road games were always televised.
And loved Frank.
And then I was like, oh, damn, no Frank,
but God, Mel Proctor was so good as a play-by-play guy.
And then, of course, did the Wizards games,
the Bullets games with Phil for a,
long period of time before Buck took over and then Buck was so good.
But Proctor was incredible.
And am I right about this, that Proctor was in an episode of Hawaii 50?
He was, he was, he did a lot of extra and small role work in television.
That was like one of his things that he did.
So he was, I'm sure, he was in an episode of the, of, of,
Homicide, the TV show.
He played a reporter outside a courthouse in homicide.
So he did quite a few of those.
Okay.
I think I said Frank Herzog used to do those too.
Yeah, I think Frank did him also.
But I thought Proctor, I thought Proctor lived in Hawaii.
He did live in Hawaii.
Yeah.
He did live in Hawaii.
Well, maybe I'm mixing that up with doing Hawaii 50.
I don't know.
But he also wrote a book about the fugitive, the TV show.
He loved the TV show The Future
If I wrote a book about it
Interesting guy
I'd love to you know what
I'm writing this down right now
I'd love to get Mel Proctor on the show
I know I've had Mel Proctor on the show before
It's been a long time
But and I can't remember
It may have been the two of us
It may go back to us doing a radio show together
But I'm pretty sure
We had or I had Proctor
On the show
He was
just excellent at everything he did.
All right.
So glad that you made the commitment tonight,
but I'm not surprised, so thank you.
Anything for you, boss.
