The Kevin Sheehan Show - Terry's Right Side
Episode Date: December 3, 2024Kevin and Thom today with plenty of follow-up on Washington's impressive win over the Titans on Sunday. The boys talked about their Thanksgivings where Thom revealed he's not that much of a mingler......shocker. The Terry McLaurin "left-side/right-side" conversation seems to have died down a bit after Sunday's big "right-side" game but Kevin had a surprise for those that think it was his biggest "right-side" game. Jameis Winston, NFC East odds, and the NFL Hall of Fame "Senior" and "Coach" finalists lists came out. Learn more about your ad choices. How was your Thanksgiving?
It was typical, you know.
I sat there in a house with 30 people.
none of whom cared about football
and
I had a nice dinner
and here's what happens for me
at family functions
you know
after family function
my wife always asked me
so who did you talk to
and I don't keep track
of who I talked to
you know
and I don't go out of my
it's like
the guarantee
they mingle
out of obligation
you know
they mingle out of obligation
I don't
I sit in a chair and people come to me.
They want to talk.
You know, that's pretty much how it works.
So you walk in, it's Thanksgiving Day, and you look for a chair, and you go right
to the chair, and you sit and you wait for people to come to you.
Well, I get my beer first.
Right, of course.
And my hors d'oeuvres and stuff like that.
Uh-huh.
And I sit down, and, you know, I have to get up to change chairs once in a while, but generally
that's my ammo.
And people come to me.
They do?
You know?
They really do.
But is it the same people every year?
Is it the same people every year that come to you because they're, they want to talk to you about boxing or they want to talk to you about baseball or football?
Is it the same relatives?
No, they don't want to talk to me about any of that.
You know, they just want to talk about, you know, their lives or what you're doing or politics or something like that.
asked me about football, baseball. Actually, no. I shouldn't say that. A group of my in-laws,
a group I would not have expected, have become devout Eagles fans. And they watched the game together,
mother, father, and daughter, and they really enjoy it. You know, because it's fun right now,
the Roos for the Eagles. Right, they're good. Yeah. And I explained to them, I say, well, that's good.
you want to take it to the next step if you're looking for some like enjoyment.
And I said that would be go find a sports bar with Philly fans and watch it with them.
Because the excitement that you feel in your living room with the three of you cheering is magnified in a sports bar.
And my niece says, well, should we go to chickie and Pete?
I said, no, no, that's too much.
that's too big a leap.
You need to find a small neighborhood sports bar
and go watch the next Eagles game there.
And then you'll be able to see there
other people like you.
And it's fun to cheer or commiserate
with other people like you over a common goal.
So we had that conversation.
That was interesting.
I know I've talked about this before,
but the last place I would ever want to go
to watch a sporting event that I cared about
is a sports bar.
Yeah, but they don't care like you.
Exactly. No, for people that don't care about the result
and they just want to feel the camaraderie of others
that are there to watch football and eat wings and drink beer, that's fun.
Like, I would do that for, I don't know that I'd do that for any sporting event,
but I understand the camaraderie of it.
And yeah, I think you gave them some good advice.
soccer, because that's the only reason to watch World Cup soccer is with a bunch of idiots
singing songs about their country when the scores won nothing.
There is no doubt.
I wouldn't do that here.
If I were abroad, let's just say, you know, we were on one of our European vacations that
we love so much that we take during summers, and there was a World Cup going on, absolutely,
and I've done that before, where I've been in a bar, actually,
not World Cup games, but Euro games.
And you're not really interested in the result.
You're interested in the overall vibe, the pageantry of it all.
Yes, yeah.
And, you know, somebody looks over and goes, you're an American.
Are you into this?
No, not really, but I'm into all of you.
This is kind of fun.
I'll take another one of those cold ones.
Yeah.
That was one conversation that was out of the norm for Thanksgiving.
Now, if the Eagles were five and nine, they couldn't care less.
Right.
You know?
Yeah.
They're bandwagon jumpers.
Yeah, they are.
And you know what?
Every team needs them.
Of course they do.
Yes.
So, you know, there's no mobility.
You're just not a mingling.
No, I'm not a, I don't mingle.
Everyone else mingle.
You do the same thing.
same thing at Shelly's for your event. You go to that chair, you sit down, you got a cigar in your
hand, you got a beer in another, and people just come to you. I don't know what it is.
But you never... It's like Santa Claus. Yeah. I look like Santa Claus. People come to me.
What would you do if you were the host of the event? Oh, I would delegate the duties to somebody
else I would recruit. I have to host of the event. I have to host of the event.
event at Shelly's. I know that. Well, I'm saying, I'm sorry, for Thanksgiving. For Thanksgiving,
if you had people to your home. Then I would, I would ask, I'd be asking my wife, what do you want me to do next?
What do you need? Yeah, what do you need? Yeah. I mean, I'm small, I'm not dumb, you know?
Yeah. I mean, if we were hosting the event, I recognize I have a different obligation.
I think I mentioned to you, because the last time we talked was on Tuesday a week ago,
that we had 28 at the house.
And it was a challenge.
Now, we catered it for the first time.
I was able to, I think I talked about this,
I was able to convince my wife that having people bring stuff over with,
you know, our group, you know, doing most of the cooking.
It's just too many people to do that for.
and it's too challenging.
So she agreed and we had it catered.
And the food was fine.
You know, she was concerned about the food.
I said, it's Thanksgiving.
I mean, can you really screw up turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing and gravy?
You can.
Hard to screw up turkey, I think.
Yes, I agree.
But the food was good.
And it just was still kind of a large group.
And I'm not going to get into the.
the effort put in by those that were working the event for the cater.
I'll save that for private conversations with the catering company.
But, yeah, it was, it was fine.
We have essentially, this was the biggest group we've had in a while, but it's the same,
you know, we host Thanksgiving.
That's our thing.
We do Thanksgiving.
Although, God.
That's not a five-star review, is it?
of the overall handling of it from the catering company?
No, it was not a five.
Yeah.
They would not be.
No, that's not a five-star review.
They're not getting what Windonation's got.
Wind Donations got 30,000 five-star reviews on Google.
But, you know, our thing is Thanksgiving.
I will say this.
I would love to go somewhere else on Thanksgiving.
That's what I was going to ask you.
Have you ever been tempted to go away for the holiday?
Yes.
Definitely.
I mean, I,
I enjoy everybody very much that comes to the house.
And I don't mind being the host of it.
You know, it's tradition.
And other family members host other holidays.
So, you know, you have to do your part.
I get that.
And I like doing it.
But there are years.
And mostly it's because, and she's not, she doesn't listen to this.
So it doesn't even matter.
But my wife really gets worked up.
It's stressful.
And in part, because she does a lot of it.
And she doesn't handle that particularly well.
And so for that reason as much as anything else,
not that she doesn't handle the preparation for it,
she's great and everything.
But it's just that with us, you know, it's like, you know,
she's on edge.
And it would be cool to just,
kind of go away, or it'd be cool to go to a, you know, do a restaurant, you know, and have all those
people, a nice restaurant somewhere, or to go to somebody else's house where I would find a chair,
sit down and hope anybody comes in my direction. That would be great. Do you want to come with me next
Thanksgiving? Maybe. You can have chairs next to each other? Maybe. The problem is your people don't
even know football's going on. Well, that's good for you, right? Because you don't really want to talk to
anybody about anything.
I'm talking about the games themselves.
Oh, yeah. Yeah, you would have to sacrifice that.
Yeah, look, this year would have been fine to sacrifice that,
although you missed one of the worst coaching gaff clock management situations ever in what Chicago
did at the end of their game against Detroit.
I read about it because it wound up getting them fired.
Got them fired and, you know, and then, yeah, and to be honest with you,
I didn't watch a lot of the cowboy giant game because that's when people were over and we were eating.
And then I think I watched the second half of the Packers Dolphins game, but that game got out of hand.
So there was nothing.
Look, it was just nice that the skins weren't playing on Thanksgiving this year.
I don't like that.
I mean, in part because of the job and the work and then, you know,
but entertaining people for Thanksgiving and then also legitimately.
needing to watch the game doesn't work well and hasn't worked well when they played on Thanksgiving.
No, it's not good if you have to pay attention to the game.
Right. So speaking of games, what did you think of Washington's Get Right game Sunday against Tennessee?
Well, they got right. Yeah. That's exactly what they did. They got right.
it's hard to find fault.
I know you're good at this because you do the good and the bad
what you like, what you don't like.
But, I mean, and I'm sure there were moments that, you know,
that were bad that you picked up on.
But overall, if I was given grades,
I'd be given high marks to a lot of people, a lot of sections.
You know, coaching, quarterback, running back.
What about Chris Gonzalez?
Love him.
Chris Rodriguez, I mean.
Yeah, Rodriguez, yeah.
The Gonzalez, not so much.
Zane Gonzalez, not so much.
No, no, no A for him, but Chris Rodriguez, man.
Love Rodriguez.
That was fun to watch.
Yeah, every time he's gotten an opportunity,
he's shown an ability to run the football.
I was talking a little bit about that, just that, you know,
because I think when people see a guy like that,
it's like, how do they keep cutting this guy and then bringing him back?
And why doesn't somebody else snag him?
There's something else there that we're missing.
Because he was an excellent runner in college.
He was supposed to get drafted higher than he got drafted.
There are so many, you know, things that we don't know about why players get opportunities
end up being really good versus those that don't.
It's good.
There's just so much.
What did you say?
Because this is good.
because this is a good transition for something I want to talk to about.
Okay.
Well, I mean, the point being, like, there have been, you know, look, the Chase Young situation
here most recently, right?
He was the defensive rookie of the year, and then he got hurt.
But then he also basically checked out.
You know, he was not the most responsible.
He was not the most coachable.
We all started to hear.
He was a family feud fan.
He was a big family feud fan.
that's for sure, didn't show up to one OTA when 89 out of the 90 players on the team did,
and he was a team captain, not even one day.
And it was clear that they were having issues with him, and maybe not just him.
And, you know, we started to hear things kind of later on.
But there are always things like that that I think most fans and sometimes most media members don't know.
There's just a lot to it.
And in a team sport, it's sometimes, you know, unless somebody's outrageously talented and productive,
there's so many other things in play that matter to coaches.
You know, I want to get back to Chris Rodriguez, but I wanted to transition to this because while it's still fresh in my head,
something I wanted to talk about.
And that's Luke McCaffrey.
Yeah.
Okay.
Luke McCaffrey must not show them much in practice.
You know, because it's not like he's got to crack a tough lineup of wide receivers.
You know, it's not like, you know, it's not like the Eagles with, you know,
A.J. Brown and Devonte Smith, okay?
I mean, he caught a pass on Sunday, I know.
I think it just one pass.
But he's been pretty much invisible.
ball, and I think all of us expected more based on kind of like the hype and the pedigree.
And that brings me to what you're talking about in a sense that what we never know,
and a big part of why coaches make decision is what happens in practices.
So I can't think that Luke McCaffrey is wowing them in practice.
Yeah, I don't have any reason to dispute that.
It's not exactly the Chris Rodriguez situation.
This is a guy that was...
No, it's not. They don't keep cutting them.
Yeah, and this is a guy that's getting some really solid snap counts in games, you know.
I'm trying to look up to see what his total snap count for the year is.
But, you know, he was in Sunday's game, he was on the field for 24 snaps, just a few less than Zekees,
but a lot less than Diami Brown and Terry McCorn, obviously.
And he had two catches in the game.
You know, he'd, it was nice to see him actually to run the ball.
He'd be more of a security blanket weapon for the quarterback.
Now, the quarterback seems to have found the security blanket in Zach Kurtz,
which is typical for tight ends.
But I had bigger expectations for Luke McCaffrey because I thought he'd have more opportunity
because their past receiving core is not particularly talented.
354 snaps in 13 games.
So, yeah, I mean, he's been on the field, you know, with opportunities, no doubt.
And like, I think we talked about this a few weeks back, and I said,
one guy that just kind of shows up when you're watching, you know,
I'm not doing film breakdown, but when you're paying attention to the All-22,
he gets open.
Now, he's not typically covered by the best.
defender and he's often in the slot. I like the way he runs routes. And I think I said two or three
weeks ago, when we were doing kind of the recalibration of our predictions, I said, I think there's
going to be a game in the second half of the season where it's like, well, where did he come from?
He caught eight balls for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and it's Luke McCaffrey. So I'm waiting
for it too. And it may be something that we don't know. It's possible. But they're putting them
there for snaps, you know? He's not... Yeah, I know. He didn't get deactivated like Phil Mathis did
on Sunday. Oh, my God. A healthy scratch. You know, I mean, I love that description by the coach.
Internal competition. That was badass. When I read that, I said, expect old Big Phil to be
inactive the rest of the year. Because he hadn't played well in a couple of games.
and I went back and just looked at some of my notes.
He didn't play well against the Cowboys.
He's been good as a pass rusher at times.
He blocked a punt against Dallas,
but he's been poor against the run.
And there's something else there, too.
I promise you there's something else there.
It might be, you know, is he in shape?
It could be a lot of different things.
But the fact that they brought a guy
that they signed to the practice squad in mid-October
onto the active roster
and put him down as a healthy scratch, I think tells you a lot about what they think of Ron Rivera's second round pick.
Oh, my God.
In 2020.
Another Rivera pick.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But that's badass.
Why is he not playing?
Internal competition.
Yeah.
That's telling you he's a load.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, this is probably heading in the same direction as Jamon Davis and Emmanuel Forbes,
who, by the way, did get picked up yesterday
because I was talking about a guest on the podcast
and on the radio show yesterday
that he would get picked up by somebody,
and the Rams selected him.
And Nikki Javala, who was on radio with me this morning,
mentioned that him getting picked up
basically saves Washington $5 million in salary cap.
That's good space.
So...
Look for the team.
Yeah.
Oh, let me ask you about him.
An offbeat question about him.
Yep.
His reputation in college was a ball hawk, right?
Right.
And he's fast, right?
Yes.
So why not turn him into a receiver?
I don't know.
I mean, like Quentin Dunbar was, I mean,
turn the opposite direction.
Yeah, but Quentin Dunbar wasn't a star, you know,
DB or star wide receiver.
I mean, this guy was a first round pick.
I know.
But he may want, that may be what he's better suited for.
I don't know.
If he's got speed and can catch the ball.
In talking about, you know, there's another part to the story that we don't know,
that would probably apply to Emmanuel Forbes.
There is something there that we're all missing.
And it could be just that incredible.
overdrafted, really can't play or can't fit into this scheme or whatever scheme they want.
But you already mentioned he's a ball hawk.
And they actually, in Dallas, liked ballhawk guys.
So there's something there.
Clearly he was overdrafted.
But like if he had been taken, let's just say in the second round and, you know, he,
we found out he couldn't play, the conversation wouldn't be as harsh,
but it still would be pretty critical of a guy that couldn't do it.
So there's something there that isn't translating.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
This is the third guy we've talked about that we said, we don't know anything about this guy.
What are we doing this podcast for?
We don't know anything.
I'm just making the point that what we watch, sometimes there's a lot more to the story.
Chris Rodriguez is a really...
You know me.
I've always preached that.
I know that.
but Chris Rodriguez is a really good.
Like a lot of guys, we can just watch and we can evaluate their on-field performance.
And you hear that everything's great, you know, the guy's work ethic, the guy is in shape, the guy's this, he's that.
And we can talk about the player.
But when you get to a guy like you only see occasionally, and every time you see him, it's like, wow, that guy's pretty good.
Like, I felt that way the first preseason game.
I'm like, that guy's good, but I knew he was a pretty decent back coming out of college
who was supposed to get drafted probably more on night two potentially rather than in the
sixth round.
So when you have a guy like that that didn't get drafted where he was supposed to be drafted,
looks good and produces every single time he gets an opportunity, and yet the team keeps
releasing him, signing him, releasing him and signing him.
It could be as simple as he just doesn't pass block, you know, because, and we don't see it enough because there isn't enough snap counts to see it, but they realize that he isn't good in pass pro.
That's a big part of playing running back in today's NFL.
Oh, yeah, it is.
You know?
Yeah, it is.
And especially on this team, everyone is expected to block.
Yeah.
The receivers, the backs, everyone.
Right.
What else from Sunday's game?
It was good to see Brian Roberts and get over 100 yards.
Right.
You know, I'd like for him to have a special season.
Seems like a stand-up guy who's probably not been used as well as he should have been
in the first couple of years he was here.
Right.
And, you know, I was considering that they didn't have Echler
and they had their best running day,
their best running day since 2012, right?
Yeah.
There was the most rushing yards, 267 in a game since the season finale in 2012 when they beat the Cowboys to win the division with Alfred Morris going for 200 yards.
And Griffin, you know, hobbled, still rushed for 63 yards in that game.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And that game, I remember that game, because I remember before the game, my footnote was Morris was going to rush for 150 yards.
I should have went for the 200.
You do remember your footnote from a game 12 years ago because, of course, you do.
It's the way.
It's one you got right.
Because I guarantee you.
But that was a memorable game, too.
It was a memorable game.
I think we did the pregame show at the stadium.
We did.
We did our pregame show from the, well, I did my pregame show from the stadium, and you
were doing a hit with me during the pregame show.
You know what my memory from that pregame show was?
Not having you on, no offense.
Having Al Michaels come on.
And I remember that.
And he sat down with me and whomever brought him over said he's got 10 minutes.
I had him on for like nearly 25 minutes, which was way too long for a pregame segment.
It was like the third time I had him on a Sunday night game.
and because they had had, you know, Sunday night games that I'd done pregame shows.
And every time we did a Sunday night game and he was, you know, calling the game, he was one of my favorites.
He was always one of my favorites.
I think he's one of the best ever do it.
And that's why.
And that's why in recent years with him doing his Amazon games, it's become pretty obvious he's not what he used to be.
But everybody, you know, eventually slows down.
But I remember sitting there and I remember how excited he was for Washington fans because he had a sense of what Washington's place in the NFL had been.
And that was the year of RG3.
And that was a game against their arch rival on Sunday night football, to end the regular season to win the division.
That was a great day at the stadium.
That was a great night at the stadium.
Great day, great night at the stadium.
I actually think the following week was even a better crowd against Seattle.
But it was, yeah, it was special.
But I remember Al sitting down, and I remember, you know,
I think he kind of enjoyed it too because he wanted to talk about the Washington fan base
and how it had been and the rivalry.
And in fact, at that point, more of his, he had done.
done more Redskin Cowboy games on Monday night and Sunday night football than any other
matchup. He and Madden, he and Collinsworth, you know, had called. And during his Monday night
years with Dan Deirdorf and others who were involved with him on Monday night football over the years.
But he had done the Washington-Dalice matchup more than any other matchup. I mean, it was basically
a lock that it was going to be on Monday night or Sunday night football once a year for a long
period of time. But yeah, they had a great day rushing the football. I discussed Tommy yesterday that,
you know, last week we talked about is this a code red game and how badly they just needed to win.
You know, they could, this season couldn't come to a screeching halt.
on Thanksgiving weekend before a buy week, right?
I mean, with a four-game losing skid.
Just win the game.
You have two weeks then to have that bad taste in your mouth.
It's never good to go into a buy week like that.
I think what was great about Sunday is they did so much more than that.
They won the game, which was what you needed them to do.
but they played it like they had played the seven of the nine or eight out of the nine games
during the seven and two stretch to start the season.
So for me, I kind of feel like we turned the clock back three and a half weeks
and we're back to where we were then as it relates to specifically the offense.
The offense showed that capability of being great.
of being one of the best offenses in the NFL,
because Tennessee defensively coming in was good,
and Washington shredded them.
We were back to, you know, one punt, you know,
scoring on six out of the 10 drives,
and it should have been eight because they missed two field goals with Zane Gonzalez.
You know, it was back to basically being unstoppable offensively,
and, you know, last week's result was the one that,
hurt and was concerning. As you know, I wasn't nearly as concerned about the offense after
Pittsburgh and Philly. And I think after watching Philly the last few weeks, people should
understand just how great that team is and how great their defense is. But it was more or less,
we get to go into this by week, eight and five, solid playoff position, but remembering the old
days where they were dominant offensively three and a half weeks ago.
And they just reminded me, man, if they can play that well on offense, if the quarterback
plays at that level, you know, they've got a three-headed monster, a big three,
using basketball jargon in Jaden, Terry, and Brian Robinson, Jr.
That will scare any opponent in the postseason.
they're not to be trifled with with their offense and the capability of moving the football and scoring.
And they have that capability.
We didn't see it against Philly.
That was the game that we really didn't see it in.
Dallas was obviously not far from their best performance.
But, you know, against a really good defensive team coming in, they dominated that team.
Yeah, they did.
And, you know, I mean, to have lost that game would have certainly made the Saints game two weeks from now on the road the old, the old, a code red game.
Oh, yeah.
You know.
I think Sunday was going to go to the road.
Yeah.
All right.
There's something that I dug into with the help of my good friend Ben Standing that I want to share with all of you about this Terry lining up right side, left side.
debate or discussion. We'll do that. We have to get to last night's Monday night football game
and James Winston's performance. The experience of James Winston was on full display last night.
We'll get to that and more coming up right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

This is more of a pre-season or early season offer.
My bookie's offering it right now heading into week 14 of the NFL season.
They've got everything you want, all football, basketball, hockey, if you want to bet on hockey,
and all the football prop bets, including still the future.
in-season bets like division odds.
You want to bet on Washington to win the division?
You're getting really long odds right now,
plus 2,000.
Philly minus 100,000 to win the division right now.
And that's because Philadelphia has a three-game lead in the loss column.
They've already taken one in their head-to-head with Washington.
For Washington to win the division,
Philly would have to lose three of their final five.
Washington would have to win their final four, and Philly would have to lose the right games.
They'd have to lose at least a game in the division beyond our game.
So that means they'd have to lose to either the Giants or the Cowboys,
and then lose to either the Panthers or the Steelers.
Actually, they'd have to lose to the Steelers.
They can't beat the Steelers.
They'd have to lose to the Steelers because the top.
eyebreakers go head to head, assuming Washington wins the second one, that would be even up.
If they lose another division game and Washington has two losses in the division, that would be
a wash. You go to common games and they'd have to lose to the Steelers like we lost to the
Steelers for that to become a push. And then you get to conference games and that's where
Washington would have the advantage. Number four on the tiebreaker criteria. Go to my bookie.orgie.
Don't bet on Washington to win the division. That's kind of throwing your money away at this point.
In my opinion, Philly pretty comfortable right now that they will win the division. They'd have to lose
at least three of their final four. And if Washington doesn't run the table, they'd have to lose four of their final five. I don't see
that happening right now.
And I don't think most of you do either.
MyBooky.ag promo code, Kevin, D.C.
So Tommy, I wanted to talk about something very briefly.
I'll try to be brief anyway, about something that I am curious about, but I have not
necessarily become obsessed about.
But I think many that are listening have been.
And that is the topic of Terry McLaurin.
and why he has lined up formationally on the left side of the formation more than any other receiver in the league this year,
at least heading in to the Tennessee game.
I think Nikki Javala wrote about this a week or so ago,
that Terry leads the league in snaps lined up on the left side of the formation.
There are other receivers that line up almost exclusively on one side versus the other.
I think DJ Moore in Chicago is one of those receivers, Cortland Sutton in Denver.
But Terry, I think, had more lining up on the left snaps than any receiver in the league.
And it's been something that, you know, fans, media types, NFL pundits have discussed.
And the reason I think I haven't become obsessed with it is because Cliff Kingsbury in his first
year as the offensive coordinator has, you know, guided Washington to a very successful season on
offense so far. You know, they have been top five offensively for pretty much the entire season.
And Terry McClearn is having his best year. He's third in the league right now in reception
yardage. Now, the two guys in front of them, Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson, two true superstars,
have played one less game, and there are some guys behind him that have played one less game.
So he may not be third after this upcoming weekend, but still, he's having an exceptional season,
and the offense has been top shelf pretty much all year, with the exception of the stumble in Philadelphia,
and not a great game last week against Dallas.
but clearly they were back on track Sunday against Tennessee.
But what I wanted to share with everybody is something that my good friend Ben Standing
helped me with because I didn't have the information.
But he had said something on the show, on the radio show, yesterday with me.
He said that Terry lined up on the right side Sunday against Tennessee
more than he had lined up on the right side in any game this year.
So, you know, was that because Cliff Kingsbury was hearing some of the criticism and decided to do it?
Is it something that they've been talking about internally?
Quinn and Terry McLaurin both seemed alike that he lined up on the right side more than he had in terms of number of snaps in any other game this year.
And the first play from scrimmage was Terry lined up on the right side and they threw to him.
So why aren't you targeting Terry enough and why is he lining up?
exclusively on the left side, and Cliff Kingsbury said, I'll show you, we'll line him up on the right
side and throw him a quick hitch on the first play from scrimmage. I'll just mention, he lined up in
the slot, I think, I don't have the data on this, but I think he lined up on the slot more, in the
slot more on Sunday against Tennessee than in previous games. But this is what I wanted to share with you,
because it's very, very important information.
And that is that yes, and Ben gave me some information on this.
Yes, Terry lined up on the right side of the formation Sunday nine times more than he had in any game this year.
He was out there for 66 snaps.
So that means for 13.6% of his snaps, he was lined up
on the right side of the formation.
So guess what?
Yes, the number of times he lined up on the right side of the formation was the highest,
but as a percentage of snaps, it wasn't.
This wasn't the only game in which Terry McLaurin lined up on the right side of the formation
and lined up on the right side of the formation for 13.6% of his snaps.
In fact, in week three against Cincinnati, the Bengals on Monday night football,
you remember the game, the first wow moment of the season.
Terry McLaurin lined up on the right side seven times out of 50 snaps were 14% of the snaps.
In fact, last week against Dallas, he lined up on the right side six times.
Now that was out of 57 snaps, so 10 and a half percent of the snaps, lower than Sunday and lower than in week three.
But this, I guess, reaction to Sunday's very good game by Terry McCorn.
Obviously, he had a very good game Sunday against Tennessee, and he caught a ball off the right side to start the game.
He caught that touchdown pass on the, when he ran it out of.
of the slot from the right side of the formation.
Now, the other touchdown pass, the slant from the three-yard line, he was lined up on the
left side of the formation.
Now, he was still much more on the left side than on the right side, but as a percentage
of snaps, this was not the game in which Cliff Kingsbury finally got it.
They finally got through to Cliff Kingsbury, and he now understands that he can't have
Terry line up only on the left side of the formation.
No. In fact, in week three, as a percentage of the overall snaps, Terry lined up on the right side of the formation more often than he did Sunday against Tennessee.
So there you go.
Just when Ben mentioned this to me yesterday, I'm like, yeah, but there were so many snaps in the game on Sunday.
And Terry played a lot of the game. 66 snaps is a lot of snaps.
So as a percentage, it's probably not the highest.
And, you know, went back and did the very simple back of the envelope, back of a napkin math,
and figured out that, you know, at least in one other game as a percentage of overall snaps,
Terry lined up on the right side even more.
So there you go. Case solved.
I am so glad we solved that.
I'm so glad.
You know?
Now I think the fan base can go to sleep tonight,
knowing that the nightmare of Terry McClorin's lining up on the wrong on the same side too much is just a mess,
like many nightmares.
Yeah, it's not a myth.
He definitely lines up much more on the left side than the right side.
But the reaction to Sunday was like, finally.
Finally, Cliff Kingsbury listened to us, listen to those of us that we, you know, really know what we're talking about.
Because Terry is only having the best season of his career.
He's only having a Pro Bowl season at this point or certainly a close to Pro Bowl season at this point.
And I think Cliff, you know, probably got a kick out of it and did it a little bit more Sunday.
but again, not the highest percentage of lining up on the right side of the field.
Since those kind of questions from the fan base and from some media,
don't you think the owners had the same question?
I don't know.
Why not? The owners are fans.
I certainly hope that Josh Harris isn't walking into Cliff Kingsbury's office and saying,
I don't know if you notice, but Terry's lining up too much on the left-hand side.
No, but you think Josh and Dan talk once every week?
Yeah, of course.
Okay.
Don't you think it's possible that Josh Harris could have said,
hey, what's the deal with him lining up on the right side all the time?
I think it's possible, but I hope it didn't happen.
Why?
That's not unreasonable.
It's not an unreasonable question.
No, you're right.
He's not saying that, you know, why don't you do it this way?
Yeah.
He's asking the coach a question.
Yeah.
For the purposes of just understanding why?
Sure.
Sure.
Yeah.
And if he had an answer like you and Ben have so well-versed in knowledge and information,
that would have probably put the owner at ease.
Yeah.
Well, actually, we've done it a few times before.
I actually think the most important thing,
Sunday with Terry, and I don't have the numbers in front of me, so this could be an assumption
that will make me look like an ass. But I think he was in the slot more than we've seen him.
And I love Terry in the slot. It was something Scott Turner tried to do a lot. Turner moved him around
a lot. He's been really good this year. I'm happy for him. Obviously, the quarterback makes a different.
in a receiver's production.
Yeah.
Now, it didn't necessarily with a guy like Devante Adams,
he still had massive years without quarterbacks in Oakland or Vegas.
But, you know, for that next tier of guys, the DJ Moors and the Keenan Allens and the
guys that we've, you know, the Allen Robinsons of the world that are really good receivers,
maybe not truly elite like Chase or Jefferson or Hill, you got to have.
have a quarterback. You just have to. No doubt.
Speaking of Scott Turner, did you watch the Chiefs Raiders game? I did. Yeah.
Him and Norv together in the boot.
Do you see him Norv side by side? Yeah.
In the box? You know, I mean, I felt kind of bad for Scott Turner.
It looked like, you know, well, here's daddy.
Dad's helping his son. Yeah. It was that kind of picture.
He's done it before, you know, with him in Carolina. I know. I know. I know that.
But the photo of it just seemed like, well, you know, I can't do this by myself.
I need my dad to help me.
Well, remember, he was elevated to that position, you know, when they fired Luke Getzzi a few weeks ago.
Right.
And so, you know, with that, you know, I always kind of liked Norv Turner.
I understand in hindsight, Norv was a much better coordinator than he was a head coach.
Really likable.
human being.
Yes.
And a very good, you know, all-time offensive coordinator.
He really, you know, everywhere he went, he was able to scheme up offense.
Who picked the worst quarterback that this franchise has ever drafted, maybe.
He did. He did.
The quarterback guru, what are the chances of that happening?
He saw something in Heath that he liked.
Let me ask you a question.
Norve Turner, could he make the Hall of Fame as a coordinator?
No.
No, I don't think so either.
There's other coordinators who have, but Richie Pettabone.
You know, I would put ahead.
Yeah.
There's other coordinators on both sides to the ball that I think, you know, would get that.
Speaking of which, I think the senior's finalist list came out today.
For the Hall of Fame?
Yes.
I didn't. Let me just look it up here for a second, but if this is true, Don Van Nata, who knows his stuff.
Oh, here it is. I got it. Yeah. All right, save this for the last segment. Save it. Save it. Because I just wanted to mention something about Norv Turner.
You know, when Norv was the head coach in San Diego in 2007, from 2007 to 2012, he had a six-year run as the Chargers head.
head coach. That is one less year that he was the head coach in Washington. He won three straight
AFC West titles, 2007, 2008, 2009. 11 and 5, 8, and 8, 13, and 3. They lost in the
AFC title game. That was the year that Philip Rivers played with a torn ACL. Remember,
he went into that championship game and played on a torn ACL. And they lost that championship.
championship game. But Norv in San Diego, do you know what his record was as a head coach?
I actually would not have known this if I didn't look this up right now. In fact, I would have
never guessed that Norv was the head coach of the Chargers for six years. But do you know what
take a guess at how many games? I'll give you in. He's games over 500 as a head coach in San Diego.
How many games? He is. You want me to guess? Yes.
I'm going to say 15.
16 games over 500.
56 and 40 is a head coach for the Chargers.
And only one losing season, and it was 7 and 9 in his final year.
11 and 5 won the division, got to the AFC championship game, lost to the Patriots.
8 and 8, they actually won the AFC West,
won a first round wild card game against the Colts, I think,
and then lost to the Steelers in the divisional round.
And then they were 13 and 3, and they lost the Jets at home in the divisional round.
Then he went 9 and 7, 8 and 8, 7 and 9, finishing second in the AFC West.
56 and 40 is a head coach with the Chargers.
It matters that he had a quarterback, obviously.
but he was 49-59-1 in Washington,
the one being the tie in which Gus Ferrat knocked himself out
in the end zone against the Giants on Sunday night football in 97.
97?
Yeah.
But no Norve to the Hall of Fame as a coordinator.
I'm with you.
Who's in the Hall of Fame as a coordinator?
Is Bud Carson in the Hall of Fame?
I don't know.
Dick LeBow might be.
Yeah, I think you're right.
All right. I wanted to talk about last night's Monday night game,
which was so much more entertaining than I think anybody would have expected.
I mean, the total in the game going into it was 40,
and the final score was 4132.
They put up 73 points.
It was an absolute shootout between the Broncos and the Browns on Monday Night Football in Denver.
Bo Nix, by the way, I think looks really good.
He makes some crazy decisions sometimes throwing the ball across the field as he's rolling right.
But he's much better than I think anybody thought he would be.
And Sean Payton, I'm sure has a lot to do with it.
Denver's defense was one of the best coming in.
And Cleveland had a quarterback performance from James Winston that was basically the Winston experience on full tilt last night.
Four touchdown passes.
a franchise record for the Browns, 497 yards, three picks, two of them, pick sixes.
He said after the game, quote, I'm just praying to the Lord to deliver me from pick sixes, closed quote.
He apologized for blowing the game, said he turned it into a mess.
but watching James Winston, and I have been talking about being a fan of his for years now
and thinking every year that this might be the year that he breaks out, this might be the year
that he ends up being a bona fide, you know, upper-tier starter in the NFL.
He had that year in 2019 where he threw for 5,100 yards, 33 touchdowns,
but had 30 interceptions in the same season for Tampa.
In Tampa, right, yeah.
Tommy, there aren't many guys that throw it better than him.
There aren't many guys that gunsling it like him.
I mean, he's totally fearless.
And at the same time, there isn't a quarterback in the game
or in recent memory, from my memory,
and I'm curious if you have anybody that you can think of,
that keeps both teams in the game at the same time
as consistently as James Winston does.
Because that is why he's never been, you know,
thought of during free agency time
as a guy you'd start to be your full-time starter.
You know, not in recent years.
He just throws too many picks,
and we're in an era where you don't throw interceptions.
You're not supposed to, Kirk.
But is there a guy?
There's a guy that immediately came to mind for me.
Because I asked somebody on radio this morning, this question, is there somebody that comes to mind for you that is this level of, oh, my God, his good is so good and his bad is so bad?
I mean, like we've talked about before, if you go back to the era of football in the 60s and the 70s, it was not uncommon for quarterbacks to have a lot of interceptions.
Right.
You know, I've talked about how NamUs and Stabler both have more career.
interceptions than they do touchdown passes.
And that was the nature of the game back then.
Recently, maybe Brett Favre...
That was what I gave.
And maybe if we want to go real recent, like this past week, Kirk Cousins.
Yeah, you know, I thought of Fav first, but Fav's a Hall of Fame quarterback.
He's one of the best to ever do it.
But in terms of a guy that would keep both teams in the game at the same time,
Fav was definitely that guy.
Look, one of the guys that I have loved,
and I think he's a Hall of Famer,
and I think we'll, you know, see that in the next few years.
Philip Rivers, we were just talking about him.
He was Norve's quarterback.
Philip Rivers could keep both teams in the game at the same time.
You know, he had years.
I'm looking at up right now where he threw us.
ton of picks. Eli threw a ton of picks, I think. You know, for the era anyway. Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
look, he had Philip Rivers in 2016 through 33 touchdowns, 21 picks. In 2014, 31 and 18.
In his final year with the Chargers, 23 and 20, you know, in some of his unbelievable, you know,
pro bowl seasons, he was throwing 20 picks. So he was, I mean, he was, I mean, he was,
I mean, this guy...
Yeah, that was a good call, definitely.
He's in that category.
You know what?
The James Winston game kind of illustrates to me.
What?
And I know that I'm not breaking any new ground here.
I'm sure people have thought of this recently.
How much time the Brown's wasted with Deshawn Watson?
I mean, I think they'll probably try to sign James Winston and bring them back.
Because there's no way you can, I mean, they paid him.
He's under contract.
But it was so obvious that this dude's head isn't in it anymore.
Right.
He is checked out.
And they just continue to put him out there.
Yeah.
I mean, the Browns are a completely, if James Winston started the season this year in Cleveland,
because their defense is so good, they're three and nine right now.
They'd have three more wins.
they'd be six and six.
They'd be in the playoff picture.
I think that's reasonable.
Yeah.
But at the same time, he'd probably blow it, you know, like he did last night.
Yeah, yeah.
He's something else, man.
I don't know what it is about him that I've liked so much over the years.
I think it's just the incredible talent for starters.
He's a big dude that can just flat out sling it, you know,
and he's just never, ever stopped taking chances throwing the football.
You know, he's a big strapping 6-4-65 dude that just doesn't give a shit.
Like, you know, he's got that Rex Grossman thing in him where it's like he could,
he'll throw three picks, but he's thrown into traffic on the next one,
and it's going to be a touchdown.
It's going to be a 75-year touchdown pass.
No conscience at all.
None.
and apparently clearly entertaining as a person.
You know, he's got a preacher quality,
he's got a car salesman quality to him.
But I've said this before, and I go back to this,
I'll never forget listening to this interview.
This guy, Ira Kaufman,
longtime NFL guy, has been in Tampa for years.
He was in New York,
and he's on Mad Dog show during the football season once a week.
And when they signed Brady to be their quarterback in 2020,
they were thrilled, but at the same time he said,
James Winston had become an absolute beloved member of the community.
And he was a franchise, people in the franchise loved him, media loved him,
his teammates loved him, people in the community loved him.
And you hear that everywhere he goes.
But I don't know, he's 30 years old now.
I think if you're Cleveland, you've got players on that team.
You sign him, you bring him back, and you start him next year and let him play 17 games.
See what happens.
I'd like to see that.
I'd be rooting for him.
All right.
What else do you have?
Did you want to say something about Kirk Cousins?
You told me that you wanted to say something about Kirk Cousins before the show's started.
Well, only that, you know, he fit the description on Sunday, on Sunday.
day. He did. No doubt.
Interceptions. I'm reading online that there are people saying they should bench him for Michael
Pennix. Well, yeah. I mean, when you draft a guy number eight overall, and your team is in a
three-game losing skid, having blown now a lead, what looked like an insurmountable lead
in the division. And here's the thing. The defense for the first time this year stepped up and
played its best game. The Chargers didn't cross midfield in the second half of the game. They
didn't cross the 50 in the second half of the game, and they still lost.
Yeah, Kirk had thrown it to the wrong colored hats.
And I, you know, I've seen the highlights of some of the throws.
There are a couple of them that I don't know that they were necessarily his fault.
I don't want to talk about this because people will just crush me.
Yes, you do.
I can tell you want to explain.
You want to be his defense attorney here.
No, no, no, no, no. He had the worst game of his career. You know, there were some games, remember, early here in Washington when he wasn't the starter yet, where he threw, you know, he had an interception problem for sure. But he has not been an interception quarterback. He's been, you know, he's fumbled a bunch, you know, over the years. But, yeah, they were, they were badly timed interceptions. They had the lead.
going for more and he threw a pick six.
They had a chance down 17-13 to kick a field goal to make it 17-16,
and he threw one into the end zone.
They were badly timed.
A couple of them were kind of receivers stopping rather than continuing to run,
and Drake London dropped a pass at the eight-yard line at the end of the game
that would have given them a chance to win the game despite his bad day.
But I'm not going to defend it. Your honor, I'm not going to defend it. I'm not going to depend.
He just did. No, he was, he was legit, slow with everything. He didn't look good. Their three-game losing skid is reason why they're bringing up penics. That combined with where they drafted him. And everybody said there over the summer, man, penix looks good. Tommy Penix was, I mean, after Caleb, I mean, after Caleb,
and Jaden, Penix was my next guy. I loved Penix. I thought Penix was really in terms of
release and pocket presence and being able to throw it the third best quarterback in the draft.
I liked them more than I liked May and McCarthy and Nix. I think he's going to be a starter
in the NFL. I'd be awfully disappointed if Kirk Cousins is not starting when Atlanta comes to
Washington to play to commanders. Well, he's playing both of his former.
teams. He's playing Minnesota this week in Washington on either the 28th or the 29th. I think the NFL
will announce this week the games that get moved to that Saturday. By the way, somebody reached out
to me and I don't have it in front of me, but said, you're way too quick to say that 10 and 7 is a
lock because of Tampa and Atlanta. That's a good point. Washington, if they get to 10,
and their only loss the rest of the way is to the Falcons.
Then they've got head-to-head losses with Tampa and Atlanta.
But keep in mind, both of those teams would have to win 10 games
because the second place team would have to be 10 and 7.
One of them would win the division.
And they're both 6 and 6 right now.
So to get to 10, they both have to win four of their final 5 games.
and that seems like a long shot to me, especially Atlanta,
winning four out of their last five,
for Washington to be in a losing tiebreaker situation at 10 and 7.
I think 10 and 7 is pretty much a lock.
And I think they'll get there, do you?
Yes, I do.
I think they might even go beyond that.
I do too.
I'm sticking with my 11 game, readjusted prediction.
Yeah, what was...
Recalibrated.
Yeah, your recalibrated was 11.
Mine was 12, right?
I think it was.
I think it was 12 at 7.
You're always trying to want up me, so yeah, it probably was.
All right, we will get to this Hall of Fame list to see if Shanahan and Schottenheimer made the coach's list and who on the seniors list made progress.

All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Well, I always tell you good things about Shelly's because that's basically what,
that's what life is like at Shelly's.
A lot of good things going on.
And who doesn't like to have good things under a Christmas tree on Christmas morning?
You can bring Shelly's right to your loved ones under the tree,
Christmas present right there. Shelly sells gift cards, I think up to $500 worth of gift cards that you

a Shelly's gift card. It's something that they wouldn't imagine probably getting, but once they

A great gift idea for the holidays.
All right.
You wanted to say what about this Hall of Fame story?
Well, Joe Jacoby seems to be passed over yet again.
One more time that Jake was passed over by the Seniors Committee.
According to the story that broke, I think, before today, actually, maybe a couple of days ago.
No, it looks like it's today. Okay. Well, Maxie Bond, a former linebacker.
Played here.
The Los Angeles Rams.
Played here briefly with George Allen.
Yes, he did. Yes, he did.
Jim Tire, an offensive lineman for the chiefs in the early 70s, a great offensive lineman.
He played here, too.
He played here too. Did he really? I'm almost positive.
I remember. And there's a story about this dude, too, that I'm forgetting. Did he die at a really
super young age?
I don't know if this is, Jim Tyre. Jim Tyre was, I'm pretty sure he came to Washington in a trade
that George Allen traded because he was a champion with the Chiefs. He was part of that, the
Hank Stram Chiefs, right?
Yes, yes, he was.
If Jim Tire makes it in, that would be...
I just found it.
74, he played with the Redskins.
Okay.
And he died...
He died at 41 years old, September 15th, 1980.
There you go.
How did he die again?
I think it's a bad story.
It is a bad story.
It's a very bad story.
Oh.
He shot and killed his wife
and then turn the gun on himself.
Yes.
So I did remember that there was a story there about him dying young.
I had that part right.
I did not have a memory of the details.
1974, Tire was traded from the chiefs to the skins for three draft picks.
Of course it was three draft picks.
Of course.
In 74.
Oh, my God.
If he were to make it in, this would be the second Chiefs player from that 1970 Super Bowl team
that would make it in the Hall of Fame in the last like three years.
Johnny Robinson, a couple years ago, got in on the seniors committee.
He was a safety on that team.
That was a great team.
You've written about that team.
Yeah.
Yes.
I did an interview with Bobby Bell about that great defense where they have six Hallfamers
on that defense.
And the other guy is Stirling Sharp, the tight end for Green Bay,
whose career kind of got cut short by injuries.
But I remember Shannon Sharp when he was inducted into the Hall Fame.
When he during his induction speech, he choked up and he started to cry
because he talked about how he was not the best tight end in his family.
He talked about how his brother was a better tight end than him.
Sterling Sharp was a really good player.
He was a really good player.
but let me just say is he
so it's Jim Tire, Sterling, Sharp, and who else?
Maxie Bond.
Okay.
Jake is in front of all those players.
Sorry.
I know.
I know.
And given the circumstances around Jim Tire,
maybe, just maybe you don't want to deal with that story if he gets in.
I mean, you know, this is surprising.
It's just stunning.
It doesn't add up.
It just doesn't add up like Joe Jacoby is not on this list right now.
Did he make it to the – I forget, was there a semi-final list for the senior – I forget how it works.
I think he went on the list before this one.
The head coach that is now the finalist for the Pro Football Hall Hall of Fame class is Mike Holmgren.
and he was chosen ahead of eight other semi-finalists,
including Mike Shanahan, Tom Coughlin,
and I think Marty Schottinheimer, right?
Yeah.
I'm pretty sure.
And, I mean, I got to look up.
I mean, I'm guessing that Holmgren and Shanahan are really close, right?
In terms of career wins?
Well, Holmgren's only got one Super Bowl.
Right?
He won.
With Green Bay.
But he got to one with Seattle, the one that they lost to Pittsburgh.
They lost to Pittsburgh.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Here it is.
Okay.
I've got the records.
He was 161, 111, 592 winning percentage with Green Bay in Seattle.
Mike was 170 and 138 of 552 winning percentage.
Pretty close.
You know, Holmgren was 13 and 11, 13 and 11 in the point.
postseason. Mike was eight and six in the postseason. Mike has two Super Bowl titles to his credit.
Holmgren has one. I just think that the differentiation between somebody like Mike Shanahan and
Mike Holmgren would be the fall under the category of kind of innovators in the game.
Influence. Influence in the game. Yeah. I mean, basically Mike Shanahan's influence we watch on
Sundays right now. Exactly.
Yeah.
You know, Holmgren, though, has, I think, a pretty good tree.
He came from the Bill Wall Street.
But off of Holmgren, don't you get...
Don't the Gruden's come off the Holmgren tree?
They may.
I mean, there were a lot of people in Green Bay with him that got opportunities, right?
I'm looking at this right now.
Let me just find.
Yeah, John Gruden was, you know, comes off the Mike Holmgren coaching tree.
As does Steve Mariucci and Marty Morningwegg and Bill Callahan, actually.
Who, you know, kind of came off of Gruden too.
Tomlin got hired by Gruden.
Holmgren's got a big influence on Rahim Morris eventually.
I don't know if he ever coached Drudin.
directly for Mike Holmgren, but he comes off, you know, the Gruden, who came off Holmgren.
I'm just looking at one of these coaching tree things.
Holmgren had some...
Not that impressive.
No, I guess not.
I mean...
I mean, all the guys who they became head coaches, you know, it's not like they set the world on fire once they did.
Mike didn't make the playoffs at the same rate that Holmgren did.
you know, Mike made the missed three straight season.
More than that. Hold on. Where is it?
Mike missed, yeah, three straight seasons with Denver at the end.
I mean, they were nine and seven, seven and nine and eight and eight.
They weren't bad teams.
And then obviously missed the postseason four of his five years here.
I mean, I guess, you know what probably? Well, it does.
If Mike retires after Denver, he's in the Hall of Fame.
Yeah, his time in Washington
hurt him.
Except for the coaches
that came off of their time in Washington
with Mike.
Yes, that's a coaching tree.
That's a coaching tree.
Yeah.
And we don't have to repeat it
because usually on Sunday,
at some point, on some
broadcast, they'll show you the graphic
of the Mike Shattahan coaching tree.
They do,
and it's like we recognize all of the names when we hear them, all of them, because they were all here.
Unfortunately, in a terrible organization.
Real quickly, speaking of one of his coaching tree guys, Mike McDaniel in Miami, I was reading something early this morning that the dolphins are kind of imploding after they lost the Thanksgiving Day game to Green Bay.
And one of the players on the team said they're too soft.
and there's a line in here.
I need to find it now.
I'm going to paraphrase it because I don't have it up in front of me.
That basically the head coach was shivering on the sidelines,
and he was the one up against the heaters in the locker room.
And he said, when your head coach is essentially too cold to coach,
it's a sign that your team's too soft.
And the dolphins have had major problems in our hands.
outdoor cold weather games. Major problems.
All right. Do you got anything else?
I got nothing else for you today, boss.
Good to talk. We'll talk on Thursday. It's a bye-week Thursday,
but we'll look ahead to some of Sunday's games together. How about that?
That sounds like an idea.
Okay. You enjoy yourself the rest of the day and take care of yourself.
I know it was a long Thanksgiving Day weekend.
I'm always amazed at how much you care about me.
You shouldn't be.
I'm trying to muster up the ability to reciprocate.
Yeah, you shouldn't be.
And I don't expect you to reciprocate because it's not really who you are.
I'll talk to you on Thursday.
I'll be back tomorrow.
