Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Chean Show. Here's Kevin. It's Saturday, the first day of February, a month, by the way, that Washington's never played a game during. More on that coming up. Sorry I didn't get this show out yesterday.
Starting point is 00:00:20 I had a commitment late yesterday afternoon. I did record an interview with my good friend, Doc Walker. You will hear that at the end of the show. second segment of the show, as in next segment, my top five Jaden Daniels moments from the season. My top five Jaden Daniels moments from the season, not an easy list to put together. I think I started with like 15 or 16 plays moments and paired it down to five. The show's presenting sponsor, as always is Windonation. 86690 Nation, Windonation.com if you need new windows.
Starting point is 00:01:00 So yeah, Washington's never played a game in the month of February. They played a game on January 31st. That came in Super Bowl 22. January 31st, 1988, the latest they've ever played a game. The Doug Williams Super Bowl in San Diego, 35 points in 18 plays. The most explosive offensive quarter in Super Bowl history. He dug through for 340 yards and four touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:01:32 The four touchdowns all coming in that second quarter. Timmy Smith, pretty good game, still holds the single game Super Bowl rushing mark with 204 yards. On just 22 carries, 9.3 yards per carry, not bad. The team rolled up 602 yards in the 42 to 10 win over the Broncos. that is still the second most yards-wise for a team in the Super Bowl. The Patriots had 613 in their Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia a few years back. But Washington's run of Super Bowls came before the big games started to be played this month. I looked this up. I was interested.
Starting point is 00:02:18 The first February Super Bowl wasn't actually supposed to be in February. but in 2001, 9-11 pushed everything back a week. So the game between the Patriots and the Rams in New Orleans, that was the first ever Super Bowl scheduled, not scheduled, but played on February 3rd, a week later than it was scheduled. The next year, it was back at the end of January, but since 2003, since the 2003 season, it's been in February every year.
Starting point is 00:02:54 we're into the second week of this month because of the move to 17 games played over 18 weekends. We'll see what happens if and when they go to an 18 game schedule. I think they will at some point in the next few years. That'll be more likely than not 18 games played over 20 weeks because they'll have two buys. At that point, we're into late February for the Super Bowl. I know that there's all this talk about, you know, President's Day weekend, which is the third weekend in February. To get that done with an 18-game schedule, they would have to start the season Labor Day weekend,
Starting point is 00:03:35 which I think they are considering they've never liked Labor Day weekend to start the NFL season. But if they were to go to an 18-game schedule played over 20 weeks with two buys, to get the Super Bowl played on President's Day weekend, they'd have to start the season. Labor Day weekend. I think the 18 game schedule is coming. I don't know what you guys think. I had John Orand on the show the other day, John's so good. And he thinks, you know, we're a couple of years away from it. The current CBA, the current collective bargaining agreement, goes through the year 2030. But they could amend the agreement if the owners and players agree to it. I always find the argument for 18 games or against 18 games, excuse me. By the
Starting point is 00:04:21 the players in particular to be an interesting one because it would come with one less preseason game. It would come with an extra in-season by week. So that would certainly push back a little bit on the health and safety. Yeah, they're playing an extra regular season game, but they have another week to rest during the season. But when I hear that people representing players say, well, we're going to have to renegotiate because we'll need more money for, it. They would be getting more money for it. They have a 48.8% I think it is revenue share per the
Starting point is 00:05:01 latest CBA. The more games you play, the 48.8% is taken off of a higher total revenue number. Because the NFL's not going to 18 regular season games without getting more money for it from TV, which they then share with the players. Anyway, you know, the other question. always is how much is too much. Is there a point in which there is too much football? I don't see it personally. I get withdrawal at the end of the season. Right now we are in that first weekend without football since late August.
Starting point is 00:05:39 You know, when college football started the season, I hate it this time of year. You know, I'll figure out things to do, but the rhythm of the football season is great. I don't think it should ever go beyond eight team games over 20 weeks. I think that would be fine. I don't think that would be disruptive. I don't think that that would create saturation. I don't. We've got 30 weeks, by the way, until NFL's week one.
Starting point is 00:06:07 We've got just over a week until the Super Bowl. Lots to talk about, by the way, between now and week one. You know, the free agency and draft conversations that we have are going to be far different than the ones that we've had in recent years. We're going to have conversations about how Adam Peters and the organization are making moves that will put them in position to win the NFC championship next year and go to the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl. You know, the who's going to be our coach, who's going to be our quarterback conversations are over. They're not going to be a part of our offseason
Starting point is 00:06:45 conversations. That's a good thing. The who's going to help us win a Super Bowl in 2025 is the conversation we're going to have. You know, you may think that's a bit aggressive, but those are the conversations you have when you have a great quarterback, when you have one in the top five. You know, it's then about winning it all. And for Washington in particular, he's a top one in your conference, and he's on a rookie contract. So now is the time to go for it.
Starting point is 00:07:20 This is not recalibration year number two in 2025. It may have been had Jaden had a normal rookie season, you know, an encouraging rookie season, but an up and down rookie season. But 2025 now, after what we saw from Jaden, is about chasing down the Eagles and trying your best to pass them so that if you play them again in the NFC title game, or if you pass them during the regular season, and you host them or somebody else in the NFC title game,
Starting point is 00:07:54 you win it and you're getting ready for a Super Bowl a year from now. Next year's Super Bowl, if anybody's interested, is in Santa Clara, Super Bowl 60 February 8th, 2026. I mean, big aspirations, some of you are probably thinking, yeah, that's a bit too early for the Super Bowl. No, it's not too early to think about the Super Bowl. This season now, in terms of the planning, is accelerated. It changed. Recalibration year one, you know, leading to trying to get better in year two and probably contend in year three,
Starting point is 00:08:34 year four. It's probably if they had, you know, an actual five-year plan or a three-year plan, that was probably it. I mean, they weren't starting with rebuild like Ron was. They were starting with recalibration. But they didn't expect 12 wins in an NFL. championship game appearance with the best quarterback in the conference, you know, they got to go for it now. They got him on his rookie deal. You know, you've got to take advantage when you have a superstar quarterback on his rookie contract.
Starting point is 00:09:05 The earliest they have to deal with that is after his third year. They're not allowed to extend him per the CBA until after his third year. So that's 2026. this team's got two more seasons of Jaden on a rookie contract before they can extend them. You've got to go for it right now, big time. They know it. Now we get to sit back and watch how they go about it. We'll offer up ideas, of course, on how they should do it.
Starting point is 00:09:36 You know, one of the things just to keep in mind, it doesn't appear to be a great free agency class. Draft-wise, they've got, you know, a slew of picks. But we know that not all rookies are ready to go and contribute their rookie year. So it will be interesting to see what they do and what they're able to do. It's not like there are four guys you can go out and outspend for that are going to come in, be high-level pro-bow caliber starters. Those guys aren't out there as much as maybe in previous years.
Starting point is 00:10:11 This from Alex. Alex writes, Kevin, I know you think there's a good chance the name will get. changed name conversation. And I agree with you, but if it doesn't, I think one more season like the one just completed, especially since it will be less of a surprise, will be enough to bring back the holdouts. What do you think? I think that's a really important point, Alex, about this season being unexpected and next season there will be great expectations going into the season. But I don't know really, you know, that's always been the question, you know, would winning make those that feel detached come running back? You know, the answer this year is that winning worked out for many, but not for everybody.
Starting point is 00:10:59 You know, the stadium capacity is one of the smallest in the league and more games didn't sell out than did. You know, those that didn't go to the games, didn't watch the games at a level that anybody would have thought based on the teams. results. You know, one of the most exciting teams in the league with a rookie superstar quarterback. And according to our good friend John Orand at Puck News, the team in the regular season finished 21st in local season television ratings, regular season. That is astonishingly low. That's barely ahead of where they were last year. So there's no doubt that, you you know, we felt anecdotally a big resurgence in fans for the team. From my standpoint, like, I can compare things like my podcast audience this year versus last.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And it's up. It's up a ton in particular over the last month. I wouldn't be surprised, by the way, if the TV ratings of the playoff games were much higher than they were in the regular season. They typically are anyway, but I'm saying, you know, at a much, much higher rate that makes the regular season ratings almost look wrong. But we'll see. I don't know. I think also one of the things that's important to them, and I don't know the answer to this, but what was lost during the last six to seven years during the Snyder era wasn't just, you know, a massive number of fans. They lost most of, if not all of their highest spending fans. The biggest revenue generating customers for the team
Starting point is 00:12:41 were the ones that were lost en masse. Those individuals, those corporations, are they back or not? I don't know the answer to that. One of the things we'll be able to monitor here is season ticket sales during this off-season. You know, will they sell out their entire 2025 home schedule? They should with what they just accomplished. They absolutely should when you consider how small of a stadium capacity they have. it's like the second or third lowest capacity in the league.
Starting point is 00:13:15 So you would think they'd have a good chance to sell out the season before it starts. Maybe a waiting list with such a small stadium capacity-wise. I mean, if you can't sell out next season after what they did this past season, I think that would be surprising and disappointing the 62, $63,000, whatever it is. You know, they've only got eight home games. They don't have nine. They have eight this year. the NFC's got eight.
Starting point is 00:13:41 So I would think that selling out the stadium after the season they just had is low-hanging fruit for them. I would think so. This from Perry, Perry, Kevin, 980 definitely played up your name conversation the other day. My son is at college at Penn State. I know you had a son there. He wrote parenthetically. Yes, I did. He put me on a text thread with his friends about the name-changing,
Starting point is 00:14:09 according to Kevin Sheehan. Yeah, I saw that. Tommy and I talked about that the other day. Yeah, the station kind of put me out there as if breaking news, Sheehan's got the skinny, they're changing the name. And that's not even close to true. I just shared the same opinions I've had for a year and a half. But whatever, I don't really care. You guys that listen to me know my thoughts on the subject.
Starting point is 00:14:39 I think they'll change it. I hope they change it. I don't know for sure if they will or not. I certainly haven't said that I know they're changing it or not changing it. But, you know, I've said for a while now that I feel better about them doing something than not doing something with the name. And I've also said for a while, too, real quickly, for like six to eight months. You know, I was very kind of emphasized six to eight months ago that I feel even more. more strongly that they'll do something with the uniforms and some of the branding, even if they
Starting point is 00:15:15 don't do anything with the name. We'll see. On the name specifically, it's going to come down to whether or not there's a solution that makes sense for them. Are they okay with sticking with something unpopular right now, hoping that it won't remain unpopular moving forward if they continue to win, you know, or do they think going to something else, which again, as I've seen, as I've said that something else isn't easy. It's not easy to figure out because it's not going to be Redskins. That would be easy. Anything else, and it's not going to be Redskins, is more likely than not also going to be polarizing. So it's not easy for them. They have the information on all of that. I don't. But, you know, like I've said, if you ask my opinion, and I'll give it to you
Starting point is 00:16:04 without having all of the information, I think doing something about it is better than not doing something about it and I hope and I have guessed and said I'd wager on, they'll come to the same conclusion. But maybe they won't. And maybe, you know, getting to the NFC championship game this year has something to do with it. And maybe, you know, just appealing more so to a younger fan versus an older fan is going to be their emphasis. You know, that's possible. This from Marcus P. Marcus P. writes, Kevin, do you think now that there's a book on Jaden Daniels for defensive coordinators to study that his second year will be like C.J. Strouds a step back from his rookie season? Marcus, that's a good question. Like, I think a lot of people would say, five's going to be fine. But there is good reason to think that Jaden and Cliff Kingsbury are going to deal with things now. year that they didn't necessarily deal with this year because there will be a season of tape.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Now, you may have seen things start to change towards the end of the year. I saw teams playing a little bit more contained, being a little bit more concerned about what he can do once he gets outside the pocket or up the A gap. But I will tell you this, and I look this up. Mahomes, after his first full year of starting, his next season wasn't as good, statistically. That first season was 50 touchdowns in 2018, and then in 19, he threw for 26. He threw for 5,000 plus yards in 2018, just over 4,000, 1,000 less in 2019. Now, he was still very good.
Starting point is 00:17:49 I mean, the 2018 season was otherworldly. Lamar Jackson's second season of full-time starting was a small step back statistically. C.J. Stroud, you mentioned him, less yards, less touchdowns, more interceptions in year two. So there is a trend with some of the quarterbacks that Jaden could be comped to, you know, first year versus second year. But I found something, and I remembered it, and I went back and found the specific quote from Cliff Kingsbury.
Starting point is 00:18:19 And I thought it was a really interesting quote. Kingsbury said when he was hired and had his introductory press conference, he said about, you know, coming back to the NFL after a year in college at USC. He said, quote, I'm big on evolving each and every year doing breakdowns of the top college offenses and pro offenses. What are they doing? How can we make that fit? I think that's what it's about, close quote. I think Cliffs, he's innovative. His mindset is always to not be afraid to see what's working out there and change with the times. Evolve. I think that mindset's the right one for sure. And like we've said, the supporting cast for Cliff and Jaden likely will be different and hopefully
Starting point is 00:19:10 improved, by the way, on both sides of the ball, which will help him as well. But Kingsbury came in, you know, he was asked all those questions. Remember in that opening press conference about the air raid? You know, he wasn't an air raid quarterback coach, excuse me, at Arizona. But he kept emphasizing during that press conference, you got to be willing to evolve. It's every year. You know, every year you've got to sit back and see what's working, what isn't, and make sure that you're a step ahead of defensive coordinators.

Starting point is 00:26:12 This is fourth down and extra long here. Fourth and 11. Daniels steps up. Daniels. inside the 30 with his legs. He'll get it. Jaden Daniels, a first down and more to the 11. Number five on the list of my top five Jaden Daniels moments from his rookie season. That back on December 22nd, Landover against the Eagles,
Starting point is 00:26:38 fourth and 11, last play of the third quarter, down 27 to 14. If they don't pick that first down up, it's curtains, and they, fall to nine and six, not out of the playoff picture, but that would have been four losses in their last six games with the two wins being over Tennessee and an escape against Spencer Rattler and the New Orleans Saints the week before. This was a hard list to put together. And there are a couple that I think everybody will have in the top five, but there are about 15 or 16 moments from his rookie season that are deserving of top five mention, if not easily, in a top 10, if I had put together a top 10. But that fourth and 11 run, he's hemmed in under pressure, about to get
Starting point is 00:27:31 sacked. He escapes up the A gap, up the middle. He weaves his way past the first downline, and then another 18 yards beyond that, a 29-yard scintillating run that then led to a top touchdown and a 27 to 21 deficit. It was game on. They came back, as you know, to win that game. All right, let's not leave that game. Here's number four on my list of top five Jaden Daniels' moments from his rookie season. Second and goal, 10 seconds. Daniels fires into. Touchdown. Jameson Crowder. Proposterous. preposterous is right because Washington had to overcome five turnovers to beat arguably the best team in the league, even though that team lost its starting quarterback early in the game. They overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half. They overcame a 13-point deficit late third quarter before that fourth and 11 run. And then with less than two minutes to go and just, one timeout and down 33 to 28, Jaden Daniels led the game-winning drive and threw that
Starting point is 00:28:52 touchdown pass to Jameson Crowder with six seconds to go in the game. What a throw, what a timing throw, what an anticipation throw, what a clutch throw. That performance by Jaden Daniels was in that moment the best of this season. Yeah, he had thrown for two interceptions. but he had still thrown five touchdown passes, 258 yards. Oh, and by the way, ran for 81 yards in the game. 3633 Washington beat Philadelphia and put themselves at that point at 10 and 5 and within a whisker of their first playoff birth since 2020. Jaden Daniels to Jameson Crowder, the game winner against Philadelphia,
Starting point is 00:29:44 is number four on the list. Here's number three. Half a minute, no timeout. Daniels throws down the sideline for Terry McClaren twice in Washington. That play is number three on the list, but that was the second loudest scream of the season from a play involving Jaden Daniels. 86 yards to Terry McLaren with 21 seconds to go. impossible situation. They're down 27 to 17. They got a field goal. They forced to punt. And then they got the ball back. And it was an absolute prayer answered for the second time in the season. Of course, that first time coming up here in a moment. But God, that was a shocking result. I don't know what the Cowboys were doing defensively. But the throw was on target. It took Terry sort of inbounds instead of
Starting point is 00:30:48 out of bounds, and he outran everybody 86 yards. Of course, we know what happened next. They went for the extra point to force overtime. I had no problem with it, and Austin Seibert was wide left on the P.A.T. Washington ended up losing that game, which was their third loss in a row, but still an unbelievable 86-yard miracle hookup between Jaden Daniels. and Terry McLaurin. All right, let's get to number two on the list. This was early in the season, week three, on a Monday night. They're down in seven. This one is launched for McClellan. He's gone. We didn't know what we were in store for until Monday night, September 23rd in Cincinnati. That throw to Terry McLaren in a 31 to 26 game on third and seven just before the two-minute warning.
Starting point is 00:31:52 facing an all-out blitz with him getting hit just as the balls released. What an incredible throw. What an incredible moment. It put the game on ice, and Washington was two and one in Jaden Daniels' rookie year, looking at an opportunity with games against Arizona and Cleveland to start four and one. The interesting thing about that night is there were multiple plays before that one. Remember the fourth down conversion to Luke McCaffrey on their opening drive? Remember the throw to Terry, the first big one of the season for 55 yards?
Starting point is 00:32:30 Jaden was absurd that night, accuracy-wise. 21 of 23 for 254 yards, two touchdowns. He rushed for 39 yards, and a touchdown had a 95.4 QBR. But that game will forever be remembered as Jaden to 10. Terry for a touchdown that locked it up against the Bengals on Monday night football. When we look back years from now at Jaden Daniels rookie season, that is going to be one of the top plays that we remember and really the first moment of the season for him. I've got it at number two on my top five Jaden Daniels' moments.
Starting point is 00:33:16 Here's number one. comes down to one last play and it's going to be getting longer by the second you're all the way back at the 30 yard line now you can step into it here comes the Hail Mary with the game on the line and the ball is crazy he did it indeed Tony Romo and Jim Nance deflected off the late arriving Tyreeks Stevenson after Stevenson was over yucking it up with the fans when the play began. What a disastrous final two plays for Chicago. Remember, the play before the Hail Mary was the easy and allowed 13-yard pitch and catch to Terry McClure to put him in position to try the Hail Mary. A play that Matt Eberfluse, the Bears head coach, said, had no impact on the final game. Yes, sorry, it had everything to do with the final outcome of the game. They would never have been able to attempt that Hail Mary without the play that happened before it. The elusive time-extending portion of that play by Jaden is brilliant, and then the throw.
Starting point is 00:34:45 Remember, this in a game coming off the injury game the week before against the Panthers that not everybody was sure he would even play in as the week went along. It wasn't the cleanest game. You know, he threw for 326. Washington rolled up a lot of yards, but they couldn't score touchdowns in the red zone. They were 0 for 3 in the red zone, and they led 12 to nothing. And actually, the moment at the end of that game appeared to belong to Caleb Williams, who had come alive in the fourth quarter and had led the game-winning drive that ended in a Roshan Johnson touchdown run from the one-yard line that gave them
Starting point is 00:35:27 after they converted the two-point conversion, a 15 to 12 lead with 25 seconds to go. Remember, Washington returned the kickoff. They could have downed it in the end zone, saved time, but Echler returned it only to the 24-yard line, and it burned six or seven seconds. Then they had, you know, a short pass to Eertz on a second and 10 over the middle of the field that cost them their final timeout, and that's when they were. went six seconds out of bounds to Terry before the final snap of the game. An all-time legendary finish in Washington's very storied history.
Starting point is 00:36:11 Daniels to Noah Brown to beat the Bears, Hail Mary style, 18 to 15. There it is, my top five Jaden Daniels' moments from his rookie season. Number five, the fourth and 11, 29-yard scramble to keep the Philadelphia game alive. Number four, same game, a ridiculous game. So many moments in that game. But the fourth and 11, and then the game-winning touchdown pass to Jameson Crowder with just a few seconds to go in the game. Number three, the ridiculous 86-yard touchdown pass to Terry in the final seconds,
Starting point is 00:36:50 gave him a chance to tie Dallas. number two, and I think number two has got to be on this list somewhere for you, Jaden to Terry in Cincinnati to give him the win late in the game. And number one, the Hail Mary, of course, has to be on your list of the top five moments. I would say that the Hail Mary, and really that first moment, Jaden under pressure, getting hit and making that throw to Terry to cinch the Cincinnati Monday night game. You know, the other three might be on your list, they might not. I had so many that were so close to making the list.
Starting point is 00:37:30 The throw that he had in the New Orleans game, where he was flushed left out of the pocket, fell down briefly, jumped back up and then move forward and threw an absolute bullet to Terry McCorn. May have been one of the most impossible plays of the year for him. Obviously, the Hail Mary would be number one. The bucket drop throw to Diami Brown in the playoff game against Detroit. That set up the touchdown that gave them the 31 to 21 lead in the second quarter, a wild second quarter. But that throw was insane.
Starting point is 00:38:06 The fourth and two touchdown pass in the Tampa game that gave them the lead 20 to 17. The touchdown pass to Ertz to win the game against Atlanta in overtime and clinch a playoff spot. There were so many big time runs from Jaden in that Atlanta game and in overtime on the one drive. The throw to Terry at the end of the first half against the Giants on the road was a sick throw. Remember the throw against Baltimore when they were down two touchdowns, but they still had plenty of time left. And he throws a fourth and goal touchdown pass to Terry in that left portion of the end zone, the front portion of the end zone. It's got to be low. It's got to be right in a certain spot.
Starting point is 00:38:53 And he delivers it right to that spot. And Terry makes a great catch. I don't know. There were a lot of plays that I had written down. Those were some of those that I thought were certainly worthy of mentioning in the top five. All right. Let's get to Doc Walker. We'll do that right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

And occasionally invites me on to be a guest, which is always thrilling for me.
Starting point is 00:44:08 But it's good to have you on as we are, you know, through the, the first week after the NFC championship game, a week in a few days ahead of the Super Bowl. But I would imagine that, you know, even though they lost to the Eagles, that you were okay with it, that it was okay to lose the NFC championship game because they got to the NFC championship game.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Well, yeah, I have no other choice. I was disappointed that they weren't competitive that we said the only way, they can lose is that they give the game away. I didn't think Philadelphia could just steamroll them, and we still don't know that, but they definitely helped them for turnovers, the points to field position.
Starting point is 00:44:58 And the beat, I mean, the kids scored on the first plate. He touched the ball. And they came back, and that didn't knock them out. So that shows you their resilience, but Philadelphia was better before the game, during the game, and after the game. But it still didn't mean we, We couldn't have won.
Starting point is 00:45:14 We just weren't prepared to get the job done. And that's on them. You didn't take the bait. What are you doing? I set you up. I wanted the Doc Walker that says, yeah, you and your people might do moral victories, but that's not how I operate. Where was that?
Starting point is 00:45:35 What are you doing to me? Well, no, we talked about it. And you didn't take the bait. No, they can't give it away. They didn't because when you give the game away and turn the ball over, now I never get to know. I don't know. I mean, it's like you drop your hands and you let a guy hit you square in the jaw.
Starting point is 00:45:53 So that wasn't defensive boxing. That was negligence. So now I know on paper, Philadelphia's bigger, stronger, faster. We know all that. But they've beaten teams that were bigger, stronger, faster. And their superpower was to defy all the odds. and the guy scored on the first play of the game. And yet it wasn't a kill shot.
Starting point is 00:46:16 And I still believe that if Echler doesn't lose the ball, you can't convince me we still aren't in it until the very end. So that's how I felt. I never feel out of it with these guys until I realized that, well, we're, damn, we're just going to give the thing away, and they're good enough to take it. And I thought, well, okay, next year, been a good run. I'm irritated as hell because I know the team
Starting point is 00:46:40 this team will never be the same because you'll never have the circumstances, the hunger, and you'll never catch people off guard. I mean, the people look at this state, and this is Rivera's team that was scum. Now they're going to dream about you. They're going to prepare for you. You're on the bulletin board now.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Anytime, anywhere, all that stuff. Now they're locked in. And so you play better people. That's the way it goes. That's no big thing, but are we going to be as aggressive? Hopefully we'll be better. We'll have more talented people in key spots. For certain areas, let me, let's face it.
Starting point is 00:47:19 We've got to get better. You know, when you guys won it in 82, you snuck up on people. It was a weird year to begin with because of the strike, et cetera, in the long time that you had off before this season resumed. But in 83, did you feel it? Did you feel like, oh, now we're the hunted? Well, you can't sneak up on people. I mean, they know who you are, and they're coming after you, but we're in the East.
Starting point is 00:47:44 So that's why I love the East, because to me, the representatives should come out of here every year. We should play New York, Philly, or Dallas three times. That's the key to get to the Super Bowl. And that's why I know we're getting back in a good position. That's how I should be. And the Minnesota, I mean, they don't agree with me. The Rams, the West, they don't agree, the Niners. So that's just what.
Starting point is 00:48:07 what I believe. But it's a physical style of play, and we're not there yet because they call it. You've got to run the ball down somebody's throat, and then you've got to stop them from money, and we're not good at either of those two categories. We want a different way with a superhuman individual, you know, and a spirit, and that can carry a long way. But in the end, I'd rather be boring, methodical, and just grind you to death. And that's what I think our team will take on more of that personality for the upcoming season. Yeah, I could tell when you were doing radio on Monday with Chris, with Chris Russell, when you said, look, I mean, we got Houdini at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:48:52 You called him Houdini. And that's one way to get it done. But that's not the way you want to see it get it. It's not the way you want to see it done because at the end of the day, they got bullied on some. Sunday. Yeah, I'd rather be the bully. I'd rather be unimaginative. I'd rather you think I'm boring.
Starting point is 00:49:13 But like Philly, I'm just bigger, strong. I can maul you, and there's nothing you can do about it. You're defenseless, because I don't have to trick you. See, we're innovative now. And I thought our offensive game player was master's tree, but it had to be. I don't want to be that dependent upon hocus pocus. You know, I want third and one to be automatic, second and second and It's second and fourth and automatic.
Starting point is 00:49:38 For us, you've got to hold your breath. They've got to hope some guy, you know, pulls a rabbit out of a hat. That's too risky. And we don't put pressure enough to burst, bust water blue. We just got to be, and it's with three players away. Now, those aren't easy to get, but it's better than being six players away. You know, with three, and they are very easy to identify, no matter where they are on the offensive line,
Starting point is 00:50:05 this is a league of matchups. That guy in Philadelphia, he's not going anywhere. There's a couple of them. There's only six or seven of them in the entire league. But if one or two of them, he happens to be in your league, you've got to deal with it because you can't man-block them. The difference in this league is that if you pay some, overpay someone, and they don't require a double team jokes on you.
Starting point is 00:50:33 Anybody wants to bat. better be able to demand a double, or I'm kicking his ass out the office. Right. Watching the Hocus Pocus Houdini Act rabid out of a hat, though, this year was fun, wasn't it? I mean, he is. He's a magician. He is. He's a magician.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Well, we feel like our cousins in Baltimore feel now. You know what it feels like they have one of those kids. You in Buffalo, you're in Kansas City, you're in, you're in, you're. you're in Cincinnati. You know, you've got one of those dudes, and every time they come out with your team, you have a real chance of winning the game because they make throws, they make people miss. They just do things. Others don't.
Starting point is 00:51:19 Others can't. And our guy, to be a puppy, I mean, he's going up to the Westminster show, and he's winning all the ribbons. Yeah. And usually we never get that guy. Right. We're always the one that overpays and gets a job. junker. We're the guy
Starting point is 00:51:36 that gets fleeced. We're the suckers. And then finally, you get Peters and you get DQ and even more importantly to me the strength of our organization is our assistant coaches.
Starting point is 00:51:53 This is one of the best teaching group of individuals I've ever been around because they took coach Dum-Dum's people, dumped all of them there. flip the team, and they're going without two years of draft picks, and they had one of the best seasons they've ever had.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Because they were able to get people better. They made connections not only mentally, but physically and mentally. And they kept the conditioning group intact, which we don't spend a lot of time on, but, you know, if you're not overly oversized people, you better be strong as oxen. Our people are strong. and our older guys are strong.
Starting point is 00:52:37 You can be up in age, but you can't be weak. And when you look at what Ertz is able to do, both our seniors, captains, offensive, defensively, played their best ball at the end of the season, not the beginning, but at the end of the season. So Wagner and Erch were able to hit that pedal at the end and still had gas in the tank, and that was important. But moving forward, you'd love to see the strength.
Starting point is 00:53:05 strongest person and the strongest people on the team be in the trenches? That's just me. To me, it's all the arm wrestling contest, and we got to, can't come up there and bring wide receivers to that one. I got to bring, like the Eagles, when the Eagles get off the bus, they block the sun. And it's no joke. I mean, it reminds me so much of the old days. I mean, you remember how people used to talk about Jacoby?
Starting point is 00:53:32 Yeah. I used to just love seeing the guy when he comes to the line and scummed. you look at the guy, you know he's scared of death. You know he is, and that just tickled me to death. To see somebody thinking, what's going through his mind right now? When he's looking at this dude just about to annihilate him, and there's nothing he can do about it. And so, but it's the attitude of the play caller.
Starting point is 00:53:55 And so when you play caller, you know, in the origin of your program, Joe Jackson gives played center and guard. So he's not an artist. He's a thug. He's got a bully mentality. He knows, you don't coach it, SD in Florida. All those people, they get it. It's a line of scrimmage league.
Starting point is 00:54:16 And that's what I think, the beauty of guys that have success in his league, is head coaches and coordinators, they have a run-based nature. They're creative, but they're not ever afraid to go right at you. And that's why you really do respect Philadelphia, don't you? Absolutely. When in doubt, this is run over you. When in doubt, if there's a question, the hell with it, we're coming right at you. Well, very few teams in the league have the guts to do that.
Starting point is 00:54:48 And they don't have the personnel to do it. And they just so they shy away from it, so they're artistic. You know, screens, flat, they come out with all these. They try to talk you out of it and try to razzle you with the nomenclature, how jazzy they sound. and most of them are in dead last or next to last place. Yeah, yeah. But the Rasmataz this year and the screams and everything else, it worked for our team because we just won 14 games.
Starting point is 00:55:23 But we lost to the bullies. Yeah, there you do. And the guy missed the play caller, and I like him, he got the, okay, you saw what happened. So the artist, which was in Detroit. Yeah. He has a great game plan. Ben had some great game plans. But in the end, but he was matched with a caveman.
Starting point is 00:55:46 See, we have artists. You've got to have a thug with him. Two artists, that gives you the Miami Dolphins. Right. See, then you soft as yogurt. Because you've got to have a push and pull. Like, you know, you were a great commercial businessman as well. You can't have everybody agreeing.
Starting point is 00:56:07 with you in the board room. You need some push and pull just to make sure we're right. And so when a guy says, oh, I'm thinking about a screen, or what about that drawing? Somebody says, what about this 50 gut?
Starting point is 00:56:21 Yeah. Somebody's got to say that in the meeting. And you look over and go, well, what do you mean? Why don't we just run over them? And the guy with the,
Starting point is 00:56:32 you know, left brain sensors what he just doesn't get that. But sometimes you just got to do that. And if you can, and how do you do that? It's how you draft. This is one of my favorite times a year to listen to your show because you're going to start talking about. When will you have your big board?
Starting point is 00:56:52 When will you have your big board? No, no, no, no, this is your time. This is when, oh, my God. You always get them right. I mean, the commissioner step into the underwear Olympic. The commissioner step, no, you know that's not me. The commissioner steps to the podium, and you're already calling out the pick. You get it right after every year.
Starting point is 00:57:12 I can't wait. I can't wait. I told me. The Indy Combine, my favorite week of shows of the years to listen to Doctor in the Indy Combine. No, JP said, man, what about your parents? No, that shit. And he's salivated now because now they're up at Mobile. And I love it.
Starting point is 00:57:30 The guy's Texas A&M. He's 6-6. 300 and this and that. he's running the cones. He's doing all this. I go, well, how many sacks do you have with that? Well, for a little. I don't remember the Aggies being in the national championship game.
Starting point is 00:57:45 Did I miss something? No. So they're talking about this guy like he's Dexter Manly. He's the man. He's Charlie Manson. He's everything. And I go, well, what place did it do? What place did the team come on he was on?
Starting point is 00:58:00 Uh-huh. Had to be in first. What did I miss in the national championship game? You know? And he said, well, no, he's somehow some way, some underachiever. Okay. You got to draft some players from some teams that didn't make the national championship game.
Starting point is 00:58:17 I don't even know what player you're talking about, but whatever. I just can't wait for him. I can't wait for your board. I can't wait for how high he is on your board. Yeah. Can't wait. No, but we do need. By the way, here's what I can't wait for.
Starting point is 00:58:30 I can't wait for when they sign, you know, a run. They draft a running back and they sign a couple of receivers before they do anything in free agency. You'll love that. I actually trust these people. In all seriousness, I do. I really do trust this group. I'm with you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:49 I'm with you. Especially middle rounds because the crown jewel could be the third or fourth round. Never know. Like, I mean, he, in San Francisco, I mean, most of his prime picks happened in middle rounds. I mean, that's really the crown jewel. You get a third, fourth round guy to be perennial all pro. There's so many busts in the first round. Guys get bonuses and they do well.
Starting point is 00:59:14 It's a missed deal. But this guy from Texas, they have, I can't wait. I told Ben Standick, I can't wait to see what you have him rated as. I don't even know who you're talking about it. But I do know this. The first pick in the fourth round of the 1977 draft, talk about a middle round pick. was Rick Walker, tight end, UCLA. First pick fourth round by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Starting point is 00:59:42 How excited were you when you got picked? How did you find out you got picked? Let me ask you this. What? Who do you like in the first round of this thing, though? I'll get to decide. I want to talk about you. I want to talk about you getting drafted.
Starting point is 00:59:56 When you got drafted, number one overall in the fourth round, how did you find out about it? Like everybody else back in 1976. 77. Phone. Yeah, by your phone, by your telephone, Bell Atlantic,
Starting point is 01:00:10 and, and as I told you, and honestly, all kidding aside, then I've got an emergency. I've got to go to attend, but we were pranking. We were pranking,
Starting point is 01:00:26 and I'm not proud of this. But, We were calling guys, and Jim Faulkner, I believe, was the general manager at Ram. So my roommate was wide receiver that was coming out, and so we had already called him, and names will be changed to protect the innocent. And we told the guy he's been drafted. It's really horrible. And his brother, and his brother.
Starting point is 01:01:00 brother was a pro. And so, needless to say, it was kind of hilarious. I mean, one of the best laughs. You know, your childhood, your teenage laughs. Yeah. With the fellows, I mean, you just, ditches. It was that kind of laughter. And these pranks were going on from the phone rang. You didn't know who the hell it was. But Boy, Dowler, who was a
Starting point is 01:01:28 Packer-grade, wide receiver. Yeah. Played here briefly. Was with Cincinnati. Yeah, he did. Yeah, boys are good dude. And so, he's the guy to call. But, you know, you've been getting to me. So I thought it was a prank because we had been pranking.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Yeah. So you don't really know what you're afraid. He sound like an idiot if you make the guy think, suppose it is him. Right, right. Which in this case, if he was. Yeah. So that's kind of what is embarrassing to, but again, you're in college, you're an idiot. Of course, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:04 So, yeah, it was just what we went down, and then my poor roommate, he just, he really never got. Was it Wendell, Tyler? No, no, no. Wendell-Witton-Witton-Rams the third round. Yeah. No, it wasn't Wendell. We were all, like, six of us in this unit. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:20 And the, um, in Inglewood. And, uh, I'm not, I'm not bragging. because to this day this individual is not proud of us he's not really yeah yeah
Starting point is 01:02:35 we did this anyway we did this thing to this guy and I forget his last name now his first name was he was like bledging a fraternity no his first name was Horace
Starting point is 01:02:44 he was in my dorm he was a football player and this was with Bobby Ross coaching the team and he was like he was like fourth on the depth chart you know he was way down the chart. So we did this thing where we had from another phone and, you know, upstairs in the dorm
Starting point is 01:03:02 called down to that floor, asked for him and then pretended we were one of the coaches on the phone saying, listen, we just lost two players to the flu and the third guy. Can't remember the running backs where it was Alvin Blount and, you know, a couple of the others. Willie Joyner, I think, may have been. And you've got to get over here now because you're starting Saturday against Clemson. No, you did that. You did not do that. We did. We did that.
Starting point is 01:03:26 Oh, he was such a great guy. And I can't, I'm forgetting his last name. His first name was horrors. He was so pissed. He chased us down all over the place because he got to the building. And they're like, what are you talking about? And he came back. He was so upset.
Starting point is 01:03:46 I'll never forget that. It's one of the worst things I've ever been a part of. Because you could imagine. The guy's brother was a pro. Right. So he had lived it through his brother. Sure. Who had been with the Rams.
Starting point is 01:04:01 And the guy was really, I mean, it was like, and I had, you know, the voice down to a T, so he really thought it was Jack Faulkner. And because it was. Poor guy. I mean, one of the best laughs. And then what happened was that, and then my roommate, you know, who he thought, projected, you know, like everybody was projected, you know, two, second, third, or whatever.
Starting point is 01:04:28 And he went, 12. It was like. Oh, man, that must have been fun back then. You're waiting for the calls. It's not even on television yet, not in 1977. No, it's not on. You're waiting and you're telling people don't call. Technology makes you sound like you were in the prehistoric times now.
Starting point is 01:04:51 Yeah. You know, but it was real. And you would tell people don't call, and I think back to, and all this to cloud over everything this week is the tragedy out of the airport. I know. It goes back to 82. It goes back to feeling so great. It's amazing because it was like a Super Bowl feeling in the 80s.
Starting point is 01:05:17 And then I gone to California. and just, and then this happened, you know, the feeling that happened. And so, and so I, so that's, you know, it's a tough feeling that all those people dying. It reminded me back after the Super Bowl and the tragedy. Right. It brought that back up and how everything just resets you to think. Yeah, it's just. And we're talking about games.
Starting point is 01:05:51 Yeah. You know, and the games mean a lot. Sports are a diversion. But it's good. You know what? And it really is. It really is needed. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:01 And I'm glad that we have it. And I appreciate you for making me laugh. You always make me laugh. And good. Always enjoy this. I know you got to get going. I appreciate it. And I'll talk to you next week.
Starting point is 01:06:12 Yeah. All right, brother. Later. At Rick Doc Walker, everybody on X on Twitter. You can also listen to Docs. podcast, patreon.com slash doc Walker.
