You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Cheehan Show.
Here's Kevin.
All right, a little fun, I guess, for you on this Saturday podcast before Washington's
meaningless season finale tomorrow against the Giants in the Meadowlands.
I was thinking last night about how strange the season's been and how many moments there
were during this season, weird moments, wow moments, stand up in your seat moments.
Now, maybe all 32 NFL teams have just as many as Washington did this year,
but there were some plays that were very memorable from this season.
So I started to jot them down, and I came up with my top eight wow moments from the
just about to finish Washington 2021-2020 season.
We start with number eight.
Number eight came in the season opener, a game which was really dominated by the Chargers at FedEx Field.
But Washington had a lead and after turnover had the ball with the lead in the fourth quarter.
But then this happened.
Just a sensational play by William Jackson. Washington has it deep on their own side.
Football came loose.
Is this a live ball?
No signal yet.
Who's got it?
Chargers do.
Incredible.
It was the first of Antonio Gibson's five fumbles on the year.
Three of them lost, and it was a backbreaker.
The Chargers took over at Washington's three, scored three plays later, took the lead
20 to 16, and that was the final score in the opener.
Again, it was odd the way the game played out with the Chargers converting on 14 of 19 third
downs, actually 14 of 18, if you don't count the final kneel down.
Ending that game, if you recall, on a 15-play 72-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes
where they converted four third downs with the 20 to 16 lead.
But despite being dominated, Washington had the ball in the fourth quarter with the lead
until Gibson's fumble. That is the number eight wow moment of Washington.
Washington's 20-21 season. Number seven came at Lambo with Washington threatening to make it a game
late in the third quarter. He's giving time. He's got room to run. He's looking for the corner. He dives in.
Touchdown Washington. Looks like they're going to, right? So there's a determination here. Is he giving
himself up as a quarterback? Let's not forget that after that play, Heineke went and did the Lambeau leap.
and then the touchdown was overturned.
He had conceded at the half-yard line.
The fourth in goal that they had, Heineke tried to sneak it, fumbled, didn't get in anyway.
Green Bay recovered. Rivera, if you recall, challenged it.
The ruling on the field was upheld.
Washington went on to lose the game 24 to 10.
Now to number six.
Number six on the Washington wow moments from the 2021-season.
season came in week five against the Saints. If you recall, Washington had just beaten Atlanta
34 to 30 to even up their record at 2 and 2. They were home against the Saints. The Saints were
struggling a little bit. James Winston in that offense had just lost a game to the Giants in the
Superdome 2721. In a 13 to 13 game right before the end of the half with eight seconds to go,
this happened.
Cody Parkies long is 54 yards in his career.
Here is Winston is going to take his shot,
throwing towards the end zone.
And it is cut!
My goodness!
Touchdown!
If you recall on that Hail Mary,
which ended up giving the Saints a 20 to 13 lead at halftime,
they went on to a 33-22 win over Washington,
that play was a weird play because there were eight-sense,
seconds left. And so Washington was simultaneously kind of protecting against a quick throw to get in
better field goal range, but also had some players deep, but not too deep, but deep enough
to cover the Hail Mary, but nobody jumped in the end zone. Callaway was the only one that made
a play on the ball. And Washington ended up giving up the Hail Mary right before the
end of that half.
All right, let's go to number five on the list of wow moments from this past season.
This one came in Denver on Halloween night.
If you remember this game right before the buy week, Washington was down 17 to 10 in the fourth
quarter.
Taylor Heineke had just thrown the last chance we thought away into the end zone on an
interception, and Denver took over from their own 22-yard line.
Washington still had timeouts left.
Denver was running plays.
They could have taken three knees.
They could have taken a safety on the final play after Washington's final timeout,
could have punted it away, whatever.
But they were running plays.
And on third down and nine from their own 23-yard line,
Chase Young made the best play of what turned out to be a shortened
and very disappointing season for him.
And Gordon is in there.
Oh, Gordon lost it.
Oh my goodness.
Washington says they have it.
Are you kidding me?
They do until right there, Young charted free.
I mean, you talk about the lack of overall football awareness.
The highlight play of Chase Young's season, a disappointing one for sure and a shortened one because of injury.
Washington took over at the Denver 24-yard line with 20 seconds to go, but they did not tie the game up.
Heineke took a second down sack, which was critical, and Washington ended up losing the game to Denver, 17 to 10.
All right, I've got four wow moments left from the 2021 season.

All right, let's get back to the list of the top eight wow moments of the Washington
2021 season.
Number eight, if you missed it, was Antonio Gibson's fumble in week one against the
Chargers.
Number seven was Taylor Heineke, giving himself a lot of the game.
up short of the goal line at Lambo. Number six was the Saints Hail Mary at the end of the first half
and their win over Washington in week five. Number five was the Melvin Gordon fumble when
everybody thought the game was over in Denver that gave Washington one more chance. Here's number four.
It came against Seattle on Monday night football just after Thanksgiving weekend. Washington had pretty much
dominated the game, if you recall. The Seahawks had actually punted on six consecutive drives,
five of which were three and outs. But Washington only had a 17 to 9 lead, in part because they
couldn't kick field goals because their kicker Joey Sly had gotten hurt in the first half and they
didn't have an option to kick field goals. So Washington, on a fourth and goal at the Seattle three,
with just over two minutes to go, went for it.
They could have kicked a field goal to take an 11-point lead,
but they didn't have a kicker.
They went for it.
They threw what appeared to be a touchdown pass to Logan Thomas,
but the replay official overturned the call,
and Seattle took over on their own three-yard line.
Unable to move the ball the entire game for the most part,
certainly since late in the first half.
Russell Wilson created me.
He started moving Seattle down the field and on a first in 10 with just about 25 seconds left in the game at the Washington 32-yard line.
This happened.
They snap at 20 seconds left.
Wilson throwing.
Got a man wide open.
It's ready.
Swain.
Touchdown.
A 32-yard strike.
On Russell Wilson's 33rd.
birthday. Wilson. All sorts of time.
Tows. And it is intercepted. Intercepted. Kendall Fuller will seal the game for Washington and maybe
the season for Seattle. An amazing drive by Russell Wilson after what we had seen that night.
And then a really big play by Kendall Fuller on the two-point conversion. That would have been one of the most horrific losses
in the last few years had Washington lost that game.
They really did dominate it,
and it was unbelievably shocking
that we were in that position at the end of the game
with Seattle having a chance to tie the game.
All right, let's go to number three.
This was one of those games that Washington was dominated in completely.
And then late in the game, Dallas made a big mistake,
and all of the sudden, the game,
was in play again.
Not a long way to go, but that's the process of a four-minute offense.
On the feet, Prescott.
Pumps, throws.
Intercepted.
Holcomb's got it.
My goodness.
This game just changed dramatically.
A pick six for Cole Holcomb.
A game that just moments earlier, they were trailing 27 to 8,
and both teams seemed to be just playing out the string of the remaining minutes of the
In fact, Dallas had some reserves into the game, as did Washington. Patterson was in there.
Jonathan Williams was in there on offense on that one drive with Kyle Allen that made it 27 to 14.
And then after the Holcomb picked six, it was 27 to 20. Of course, Washington missed the extra point.
They had the extra point blocked. But they got the ball back. After a three and out, they got the ball back.
And Kyle Allen threw a beautiful ball to DeAndre Carter down the right.
sideline that Carter dropped. If he had caught that, Washington would have been in great field
position deep into Dallas territory with just over two minutes to go. But the next play after that
drop was Allen getting sacked and fumbling it. Dallas ran the clock out and won the game
27 to 20. But that pick six by Cole Holcomb was shocking in the moment. All right, let's go to
number two. Number two came in week two on a Thursday night at FedEx Field against the New York
Giants. Washington trailing 29 to 27 and their former kicker, you remember him, Dustin Hopkins,
has a chance to win the game on the game's final play. Good snap, good, hold kick is no good,
but a flag is down in the secondary. Near the Washington sideline.
on the defense from 97.
It's a five-yard penalty.
That was Dexter Lawrence, who came across early.
And now a 43-yard drive for the win.
Good snap, good hold.
Kick is good.
Washington wins it.
Thank you, Dexter Lawrence.
If not for him, Washington would have started off O.
three. But they got the win. Hopkins got the reprieve, kicked it through the uprights from
43 yards out, actually just barely inside the right upright. And Washington had a 30 to 29 win over
the Giants. Man, Washington was very fortunate early in the season in week two and then again
in week four. All right, what's the number one wow moment from the season? Actually, it's a
combination of two moments.
And you'll hear both of them when we come back after these words from a few of our sponsors.
All right, let's get to number one on my list of the top eight moments, wow moments, stand up in your seat moments from the 2021 season.
Just recapping real quickly, the top seven before we get to number one.
The Antonio Gibson fumble inside his own 10-yard line in week one against the Chargers was
number eight on the list. Washington had a lead in that game in the fourth quarter. Taylor Heineke
conceding at the half-yard line at Lambo in a 24 to 10 loss to the Packers, which he then went and did
the Lambo leap was a stunning moment for sure. The Saints had the Hail Mary at the end of the first
half in week five in their 33 to 22 win over Washington. In the Halloween game at Denver,
Gordon fumbled after being stripped by Chase Young late in a game that was seemingly over. In fact,
Denver should have been taking knees and then maybe a fourth down punt safety at that point.
But Washington got another chance, even though they were unable to tie the game. That Chase Young
strip of Melvin Gordon came in at number five on my list. Number four was the Russell Wilson
97-yard drive and the touchdown pass to Freddie Swain and then Kendall Fuller.
interception on the two-point conversion. That came out of nowhere. That was a game that Washington
owned pretty much start to finish, and yet they were on the verge of losing it. Don't forget
too. Seattle, if you recall, recovered an on-side kick, but they had an illegal formation, and Washington
won the game 17 to 15. Number three on the list was the Cole Holcomb pick six against the
Cowboys, which incredibly put them back into a game that was pretty much over just five minutes
earlier. Number two was Dexter Lawrence jumping off sides on Dustin Hopkins missed field goal in
week two, gave Hopkins another chance, and he delivered from 43 yards out to beat the Giants
30 to 29. And that leads us to number one. Number one is a combination of two moments,
two plays. I think it was the game of the year for Taylor Heineke. It was a must-win situation in many
ways for Washington. I know it was early in the season, but if you recall, they had been blown out
by Buffalo in week three. They had fallen to one and two on the season, and they were facing that
stretch of schedule where they had the Saints, the Chiefs, the Packers. They were going to play
the Broncos, but then they were going to get Tom Brady. And it looked like if they didn't beat the
the Falcons on the road, you know, a team that was not perceived to be very good, that the season
was going to snowball out of control after that. Now, they ended up losing four in a row after they
beat the Falcons, but that game was a game that they really had to have. And it was a game that
went back and forth. Washington was down 10-0 early. Then they came back and took a 19-17 lead.
Then Matt Ryan engineered two long drives, and Atlanta had a 30-22 lead late into the fourth
quarter. But Washington's last two opportunities with the football ended with these two incredible
plays. Ineke off play action. There's Fowler in the backfield. Heineke gets away,
lobs it in the end zone, and it's caught. It's a touchdown. McClorin, back on the field.
And out of the scramble situation, he ends up with six.
But no struggling for extra yards, no putting the ball in harm's way.
We got to be very sharp.
Third and seven.
Heineke, all day to throw.
Nobody open.
Now, McKissick pops free, and he found him.
McKissick runs through the tackle.
Down the sideline.
McKissick going airborne.
J.D. McKissick soaring to the goal line, and he's out of bounds inside the one.
No, it's a touchdown.
Wow.
The officials confer, and it is six for Washington, and they take the lead.
That first touchdown thrown to Terry McClure really was a prayer and a pass that should have never been thrown on a first in 10 with about four minutes to go.
They didn't make the two-point conversion.
They still trailed in the game 30 to 28, and then the third and seven touchdown pass with roughly 30 seconds to go in the game,
where Heineke created, created, went through every single read and came all the way back to throw the pass to J.D. McKissick.
He ran it in and Washington won the game 34 to 30. Remember that Atlanta did get all the way down to the Washington 37-yard line at the end of that game and had an opportunity on a Hail Mary at the end of the game to win it.
Washington won it. Taylor Heineke finished 23 of 33 in that game for 290 yards, three touchdowns, no picks,
an 86.4 QBR and a 127.1 passer rating. I think it was his magical moment of the season.
Those two throws, and really the game overall that he played really stood out. There you go.
Just an idea I had as I started looking at some of the games that were played.
this year. And by the way, there were a few more that I didn't include in my top eight. Maybe I'll
mention them on the next podcast. All right, that's it for the day. I'll be back on Monday with a recap
of the season finale and a lot more.
