You don't want it. You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin
and show. Here's Kevin.
Now some energy after the goal.
Turn over off the skate of cyber.
Ovechkin into space. A shot!
Scal!
The 30th of the season for the 18th time in Alex Ovechkin's career.
Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals last night with a huge win in Detroit.
A game they had to have, they got it.
They are currently now a point ahead of
Detroit and Pittsburgh for that second and final wild card spot.
Doc Walker will be on the show coming up.
Steve Sands is going to join me here momentarily to open up the show from Augusta,
the site of the Masters, of course.
The show's presenting sponsor, as always, is Wind Donation.
Call them at 86690 Nation or head to Windonation.com for a free,
no obligation in-home estimate.
So Steve from NBC, the Golf Channel, of course, a D.C. native and a huge D.C. sports fan,
and he joins us before every major.
And he is, I think, at the course.
We'll get an update from him on that in a moment.
But he doesn't want to talk about golf.
He wants to talk about the caps in their big win last night.
He wants to talk about quarterback at number two.
So why don't we start with your cap?
Big win last night.
Listen, will you stop with the your caps?
You're from the area, Kevin.
It's embarrassing.
It's embarrassing.
And also, I love listening to your show every day.
You know I do.
I love you.
I love Tommy, the whole deal.
Let me tell you something.
Nothing makes me happier than the caps forcing you to talk hockey.
Because I know you hate to talk hockey.
No, I don't hate it.
I don't hate it.
You do.
It's okay.
You hate it.
No, I don't watch regular see.
in hockey, and it's not a needle mover for what we do here until this time of year. And I actually
really enjoy the NHL playoffs. I'm hoping that they make it. I'd like to see Ovechkin in the postseason.
And I think the NHL would like to see that. Oh, big time. The NHEL would love to have the caps in there.
They do not want to miss the playoffs two years in a row while having Hovechkin on the roster.
I dig win last night, man.
That was a huge two points against Detroit.
Now they've got a tough one against Buffalo.
It's not an easy schedule coming home, but I think the caps are going to man up,
and they're going to meet the moment.
It's going to be great.
Do you go to a sports bar last night to try to catch the caps and the wings in Augusta somewhere?
Or do you just follow it on the phone?
Not enough.
Perhaps there may have been a TV on the Caps game where I was last.
Oh, that's right.
It was on ESPN.
Yeah.
It was an ESPN.
Yeah.
Yeah, it helped a lot that it was on ESPN.
God, listen to the birds in the background there.
It's just beautiful down there, isn't it?
Well, what's crazy is that you hear the birds chirping,
but you never actually see a bird.
So who knows what goes on here at Augusta.
There's probably speakers in the trees.
It's just birds chirping.
I'm telling you, Kevin, this is my 21st Masters.
I'm looking up right now.
I'm telling you there is no bird in the sky.
There's no bird in the sky.
bird in the sky. Where are you right now? Where are you right now? I am just down the left side of the
range at the tournament practice area. If somebody busted a drive about 350 down the left side,
that's where I'm standing. Are you allowed to be there on your phone? Um, you know,
I'm kind of hidden in the trees for Kevin Cee and I do this every year in the same exact spot. I haven't
been caught yet. All right. Good. Who do you want them to draft? Now Johnson Wagner,
television's Johnson Wagner is walking by me right now
and he's yelling at me that I'm actually on the phone
and why I have a phone.
So there you go.
So to answer your question, yes, I'm on the phone
and no, I'm not allowed to be.
But for Kevin Sheehan of the world.
We better get through this quickly then before you get booted.
No, you're fine.
Who do you want them to take two weeks from tomorrow night?
Well, I was so funny.
You know, you see everybody here at Augusta,
and you know I'm just a huge sports fan.
It doesn't matter who you see.
You just want to talk about sports.
They want to talk to me about going.
and stuff, and I went to talk to the sports.
I saw Marty Smith from ESPN the last couple days, I said, Marty, you do college football.
Come on.
Who are we taking?
He's like, who's we?
I'm from D.C., who are the commander's going to take with the second fit?
He said, he would take Jaden Daniels.
I would take Jaden Daniels.
I think they should take Jaden Daniels.
We'll have to wait and see how it all plays out.
Peters is, didn't Peters get involved with the Purdy?
decision with John Lynch? I don't know. I think that may have been more... I think that may have been
much more Brian Greasy is the story. That Greasy was the guy on Purdy in that organization. It was
the last pick in the draft, you know? I mean... No, I know, but my point is maybe he sees... Now, if you take
JJ McCarthy with the second pick because you think he's going to be Brock Purdy, that's ridiculous
because of value-sake for the second pick from the last pick in the draft is a completely different
scenario. But if they decide to go that route, then they're going to have to really...
build the roster out like the Niners.
If you go the route of having the great
quarterback who you think is going to be dynamic, say,
at Jayden Daniels, then it's a
completely different story. So I think
Jayden Daniels is the guy,
from what I've been told by football people who I know
and just the eye test,
I would take Daniels before I took break in.
I'm going to say
something to you because you and I have had this
conversation many times about this
particular player, but I was reading something
last night where
someone was comping J.J.
McCarthy to Kirk Cousins and that that's the type of quarterback he is and you're getting
Kirk Cousins and J.J. McCarthy. And I will admit to you, and this is big of me, there's no way
that if you tell me J.J. McCarthy is going to become Kirk Cousins, I'm taking him with the number
two pick. I just think that you've got to shoot much bigger than Kirk Cousins with number two.
Now, if I ended up with Kirk Cousins in this draft somewhere along the line versus a bust, I'd certainly take that.
But I'm not going into the draft trying to pick Kirk Cousins at number two.
I totally agree.
Again, if you're going to go the Brock Purdy route, which is fine, the Kirk Cousins route, which is fine,
you have to have an exemplary roster to be able to succeed.
There's nothing wrong with a game managing quarterback.
I think Kirk Cousins is not a game manager.
I think Kurt Cousins can win you games.
I just don't think when you're big enough games.
That's why you and I've argued about this for 10 years.
But Purdy, if you're going to go that route,
it's a completely different route and going to the route of taking who you think is going to be a freak show,
athletic, incredible, dynamic quarterback.
And again, I don't know what they're thinking is.
I just hope they choose wisely, and I think they will.
I mean, this regime's pretty sharp, Kevin.
They're really good.
I like the way they're doing it.
And, you know, next week's a big week.
If they get the right guy and we have the right quarterback for 12 years,
you and I are never going to even complain one time
and never even remember the conversations we had.
We just want the right guy in that spot.
You know, I was thinking about something the other day,
just after the 20 years that we've all spent,
we're going to be an easy-to-please group.
It's not going to take much to please us.
All right, let's talk master.
Kevin, Kevin, we've been dating a two for 25 years.
We're about to date at least a six or seven.
So, yeah, it'll be a huge improvement.
Right.
And we would, right now, we would pay for a six or a seven.
We hope for more, though.
So this is pretty amazing, right?
The significant favorite that Scotty Schaeffler is heading into this Masters,
he's, you know, somewhere between plus 350, plus 450,
he's a massive favorite to win this, will he?
I think he's got a great shot at it.
I like the fact that he did not win in Houston,
which means he did not win three consecutive times coming here.
He did not continue the streak of underpar rounds.
It stopped at 28.
It would have been 32.
So all those streaks are out of the way.
He's coming here with great vibes.
He's won here before, and he's playing very, very well, Kevin.
That heavy favorite, man, you and I've been doing this a long time,
and we enjoy, you know, throwing some money down on certain sporting events and certain athletes.
That's a favorite, like, in Tiger's heyday, Kevin, that's a massive favorite in this sport
to have that type of number.
That's a short, short number.
That is telling you exactly what Vegas thinks is going to happen this week.
He is a prohibitive favorite and deserves to be.
What makes Scotty Schaeffler so good?
He's the best ball striker.
in the world, and I mean by a long shot.
He hits the ball, Kevin, on the screws every time.
When he misses, it's almost, it's so rare when he misses that you're like, wow, that was a really weird deal.
The problem with Scotty has always been whether or not the putter cooperates.
And when the putter cooperate, and by the way, it doesn't even need to heat up.
it just needs to get in the microwave and warm up.
He hits the ball so well.
He gives himself so many opportunities.
You watch the next four days, Kevin, everybody who's listening.
The next four days, watch how many opportunities he gives himself for Bernie.
He is between 8 and 15 feet so often.
It's incredible how well he hits the ball.
And if the putter just cooperates a little bit,
that he's going to put himself in contention.
and when he puts himself in contention, he rarely falters.
So I don't think he is one of these crazy intimidating guys by any means.
But the world of golf knows how great he is.
And when they know he's putting a little bit, the ball striking is always going to be there.
And he's become kind of an intimidating name, not person, but named to see on a leaderboard
because he's just been that good for the last couple years.
Rory's been really good, but he has not been good in majors, or not good enough, we should say.
So how does this sort of major season start for him?
Oh, man, there's a lot of pressure on him, Kevin.
He's trying to win the career grand slam.
Five of the guys have done it.
Gene Sarasen did it here in 1935 when it really wasn't a major.
It was the second masters ever.
It was just kind of a made-up event that became.
the biggest event in the sport, but not at the time.
So what Rory's trying to accomplish here this week is just an incredibly difficult and arduous task.
So he hasn't want to measure, Kevin, in 10 years.
Forget the Masters.
He doesn't want to major in 10 years.
And, you know, that scar tissue builds up.
He's playing better.
He played well last week.
This golf course should be perfectly suited for him.
if the weather is real bad tomorrow, he might catch a break because if you remember back at
Congressional in 2011, the first ever major and the other three majors, soft golf course,
not a lot of wind.
Well, once this weather blows out tomorrow, the weather forecast for Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday is supposed to be great, and the golf course is going to be soft because they're supposed
to get to an inch to an inch and a half of rain tomorrow.
So it could bode well for Rory this week if tomorrow's weather actually.
comes to fruition and they don't get to play tomorrow, it could be a really good sign for
Rory. So if it does get soft, what's the winning score? These guys are so good, Kevin. The record here
is Dustin Johnson 20 under. That was the COVID year. That was COVID, right? That was the COVID year.
The only Masters ever played in November. And the golf course in November is completely different
than the golf course is in April. So if you want to say that that's the record, it is the record.
but the record for April, which is every other masters that's ever been played, is 18 under par.
If the golf course is soft for three days and there's very little wind for three days,
I think that 20 under par is in play.
These guys will crush the golf course if it's soft and not crush it's going to be bad.
It's just going to be low scores.
All right.
How will Tiger play?
Well, you think you'll play?
It seems like the odds are stacked against that.
But what do you think?
What does he look like?
We know it's one of the toughest walks in the sport because of how hilly it is.
So what kind of shape is he in?
What do you think will happen?
He looked good yesterday when I saw him walking.
You know, is there a little bit of a limp?
Is it completely clean 100 percent?
Of course not.
It's never going to be.
But he looked pretty good.
He's in a good frame of mind.
he knows his place better than anybody in the field.
He's won at five times.
It's his favorite event, favorite course.
But as you said, it's the toughest walk of all the major championships.
So Tiger's going to have a challenge with that.
And the opposite of Rory, if the golf course is soft for Rory, that's great.
If the golf course is soft for Tiger, that's not good because that makes the walk even more difficult.
Because when that ground is softer, it's tougher on his lower half.
and that'll be a challenge.
And, Kevin, depending on how the weather blows through here,
if they play a little bit of golf tomorrow,
he probably won't tee off because he's supposed to see off tomorrow at 124 p.m. Eastern.
If they blow out the first round because of weather,
then he'll just start at 124 on Friday.
That's not a big deal.
If they play a little bit tomorrow afternoon after the weather is supposed to clear out at 1, 2, 3,
clock. And Friday, Kevin, he could be playing 25, 26, 27 holes. That would not be good for him
health-wise, because then he would have to turn around and do it again on Saturday before they
catch up and get on time for a Sunday finish. So it could be very challenging for Tiger if
this weather system, you know, comes through the way it's supposed to. All right, let's finish up with
this. Who wins it and give me somebody from, you know, off.
the board a little bit that you really like to make some waves?
I think Scotty Sheffler,
God, I hate taking the chalk,
but Scotty Sheffler is really head and shoulders above everybody.
I think John Rom will probably play well here,
although there's a little bit more pressure on him than usual with the live thing.
I think Hedekhi Matsuyama has a great chance to win the green jacket.
And if I was going to go off the board,
I would take Tyrell Hatton, the Englishman,
who seems like an angry ant out there.
He's really actually a good guy.
He just gets really animated on the golf course.
But I would take Tiro as a bit of a launch.
I think there's some value in that number.
Yeah, and he's won before.
Real quickly, does this course set up for Denny McCarthy well or not?
How tough was that to watch?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
But it was riveting at the same time.
time. He's back nine.
We were in the booth thinking,
how good is this?
Like literally, we were sitting in the booth,
looking at each other,
just going, this is awesome.
Does the course set up for Denny?
I love Denny, and he's, you know, he's one of us, you know?
But he's the best part of the world, man.
He can win anywhere.
He's hitting the ball great.
Had a very, very, very bad shot.
in that playoff. He just hit a bad, bad shot at the wrong time. But I think he's strong,
and he'll erase that from his memory. It's his first ever Masters, I believe. And it's
really, you know, 1979 Fuzzy Zellar is the last guy to win here his first time. But
he's such a great putter, Kevin. And nobody ever talks about his iron game, but the way he
strikes the ball is improving each and every week, each and every year. So Denny's getting
much, much closer to winning,
and I hope he has a positive
attitude this week because he can win anywhere.
Does the golf course suit him?
Maybe, but we have to wait and see. He's never played here
at the Master, so we'll have to wait and see about that.
But I think Denny can win anywhere.
He almost won a U.S. Open a couple years ago at Brookline
when Matt Fitzpatrick won.
So no situation intimidates him,
and no golf course is too much for him,
and no situation is too much for him.
Yes, he faltered last week.
but you could say that about almost every athlete, every team in a team sport.
You always have to go through some hiccups before you get right back on.
We talked about Rory.
He blew the 2011 Masters here, and then the next major was congressional two months later,
and he won by eight.
So, you know, the best usually get over the bad stuff quickly,
and I think Denny is in that category.
Thanks for doing this.
I appreciate it, as always.
Enjoy it.
I'll talk to you soon.
Hey, of course, anything for you, Kevin. Go Caps.
Steve Sands, everybody. Always fun to catch up with him.
We can talk to him about almost anything with him being from here and being a huge fan of all the teams.
Speaking of one of those teams, did you hear what Montez Sweat said yesterday on Chris Long's Green Light podcast?
Montez Sweat, now a Chicago bear, was asked about the team,
name being the commanders.
Here's what he said.
Every time I'm like, bro, why don't we just be the race can't?
It's part of the culture.
Like, what's the problem?
So it was up to me.
We would have just been the rascans to call it at that.
But anything but the commanders in my opinion.
Oh, my God.
I was so embarrassed.
I was so embarrassed.
When people asked me for who I played for, I didn't, I was Washington.
Montez got cut off there at the end, but he said Washington.
if you didn't pick that up.
When people asked him who he played for, he said Washington.
Look, the draft is two weeks away.
I'm not going to spend much time on it.
This is a big issue, as most of you know,
with a significant percentage of the fan base.
And yes, I believe ownership knows that.
I know they knew that when they took over the team,
and they knew that during the summer months and into the fall.
I am a bit concerned that they're stalling this out
for cornering this out,
because maybe they've learned that it's a very hard thing to do,
that it's a very expensive thing to do.
I don't know.
I don't have any of the answers.
I do know that this was something that they knew was an issue for many of them,
many in ownership, it was an issue.
I would certainly imagine, despite the claims to the contrary from guys like Jason Wright,
that this isn't a priority at all,
that they have certainly spent some time on it.
But I can't say for sure.
I would hope that sometime between the end of the draft
and training camp, we get some sort of update
on the name and branding.
All right, Doc Walker next right after these words

I mean, draft time used to be our time of year.
That's not true.
I think the pregame show was the fun stuff.
But the draft night stuff that we used to do.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
It's just I'll never forget it.
I don't think, I hope it's not over, even if we have to do it, you know, podcast-wise.
But it was just so much fun.
The receiver picked out.
There's so many memories.
And there's so much hit and miss in this.
I can't believe we take it seriously.
But thank God for March Madness.
Yeah.
Because without March Madness, we'd be talking about this crap for the last six weeks.
March Madness and Caitlin, it just helps so much.
buffer this. And we're down
out of just several weeks. And it really
was a good deterrent from it.
Once again, we got the second pick,
which, you know, we seem to
have it damn there every three or
four years. And so
here we go again.
But at least now we've got a different
group in charge.
So I'm not as panicked as I normally
would be. Well,
it is
crazy this time of year.
And you and I joke about it a lot
off the air, but we can talk about it on the air, is that it would be one thing if you just had
like two columns to write a week. But if you got to do three hours or four hours of radio
every day, then somebody putting a mock draft out no matter how silly. Oh, it is? No, I know.
I mean, but it really is like what you just said, because this is, I mean, we're not similar in any way,
shape or form.
You know, there are very few ways
in which we are similar.
But one of the ways we are similar is
we would much rather be talking about
games that we just watched
or where we're at rather
than projecting
who will get drafted and what they will
be like in the pros.
But with that saying, you got a big board
every year. I use you and Ben. I use
you and Ben and thank God you
good at it because
I mean, we mocked about the schedule.
and we have fun with it.
But now you're adding more.
We're still judging this by the old days,
and there's nothing just relative to now.
They play more games than ever.
We're still praising people for getting 1,000 yards.
I'm going, what are we doing?
We should cut a guy that don't get 1,000 yards now.
We're still praising when they had 12 games,
when OJ and them guys, and Jim Brown was playing.
So, no, but it's still fun,
and because it's real,
it involves us being able to cheer and not being in last place again.
I'm serious about it.
I think we have some good prospects to choose from.
And I'm hoping that somebody does something really dumb
and offers us to King's ransom for the second pick,
and we can go down a few slots and still get a quarterback,
one of the three or four guys that are worthy,
and then move on and then get some interior.
help with what we need, you know, in our edge rush area O line. We need some things, but
nevertheless, at least there's some candidates now that I'd be happy with. If we stay at two,
I'm good with it. I want to talk about the staying at two part in a moment. But I do agree with
you. This time of year is silly season unless you're actually in the business and you get paid
to evaluate and you're talking to these people
and you really have all the information
and they get it wrong.
That's what's so ridiculous about this.
Here we are talking about it wrong.
The experts, the people that are getting paid millions to do this,
they get it wrong more than they get it right.
With that said, there is something exciting about this draft
and this opportunity for this franchise,
which feels like a new franchise.
And I know that you, like,
college football and you've watched some of these quarterbacks and everybody has focused in on
Jaden Daniels, Drake May, and I guess J.J. McCarthy. I'm actually interested in what you think of
Pennix Jr. as well. But let's start with, you know, if this were you, not knowing what we don't know,
but just on what you've watched, who's the quarterback that you like and that you'd want them to take it to?
Jayton Daniels, to me, gives you the best chance to threaten opponents with his athleticism while you build your line while you build your offense.
Because if I got to defend us, I would not want to see him because he can beat me in a number of ways.
I like McCarthy.
I think Drake May, I know why people are in love with him.
So he walks in the room, you go Google Gaga.
but I don't trust.
I think that's who he'll pick ultimately if I had to put money on it.
Oh, May?
You think that's who they will pick?
I think that's who they will pick.
Okay.
If I were in it, I would think I would want to go with Jaden Daniels,
but I think Michael Pennix is the best ready to guy to go right now.
I think three years from now, this guy will be doing some outstanding things
if he doesn't get wrecked with a bad organization.
Yeah, I like Panics Jr. a lot, too.
And, boy, mentioning the organization is so important.
I mean, what's unpredictable for all of us is will these, you know,
players end up in the right situation for them with the right, you know, ownership,
with the right front office, with the right coaching staff.
So other than Jaden Daniels' ability to really hurt you athletically,
and being able to do that, you know, day one, day one, yeah.
So what else do you love?
like about him. Yes. What else do you like about him?
I like a guy. One of my
quarterback that has been coached hard.
He was coached hard at LSU.
He wasn't
baby, and he played
with guys that would be very similar to the
NFL level he'll be playing with
here or wherever he's at.
So it's no shock for him when he
gets out. They have NFL ready
skill people. So he's already
made that adjustment.
So that's not new to him.
I don't think Drake May had enough talent
around him to come right in and plug and play because there's a bigger adjustment for him.
Well, Pinnock, I think he plug and play.
JJ, to me, is a wild card because I really like this dude because I know he was coached real hard.
He's also been in a huddle, been under center.
I think he reads.
I think he's game ready now as well.
He'll probably get with a better team and has better talent than the rest of the guys.
and may flash earlier.
But he doesn't have the skill set completely from an athletic standpoint that Daniels does,
but I like him a lot.
And if they got him, I wouldn't be worried about it at all because I know how hard he was coached.
And he played the biggest games that didn't crap to bid.
He got better as the competition got stiffer.
What's important?
What would be important to you to find out about them personally?
Well, I got to get a guy that this next stage,
with cash in his pocket.
I need a guy from a big-time program
so he doesn't get shell-shot.
When you get guys that come from smaller environment,
they get overwhelmed.
I got to get a guy that is not going to blow his mind
with social media and the idea that now he's got cash.
Well, these guys get paid in college now.
So that's a check.
And then the family deal, which I don't know,
because I don't know their backgrounds well enough,
because I can't bring a guy in
that it has a ball-like parent who's going to come over and try to take the league over and be as Asian.
I don't have time to that because we're trying to win.
You want to accelerate your curb as much as possible.
I don't have a time to babysit a guy.
I need a guy that has really is settled and can come in and not be overwhelmed by the fact that now he's represented a franchise and not be overwhelmed by that.
Did you see what Don Staley said about the kind of player that she recruits after talent?
She said, I want players who respect their parents because if they don't respect their parents,
then I've got no shot because they won't respect me.
Yeah.
But I was thinking about...
You know what I call them.
What?
I call them Huxables.
You get these kids in there that all of a sudden their parents have made them.
them hit a household. It's because they're about to get money. I want to deal with that.
We've been through that. The good news for us, we've already experienced what not to do
and what not to allow these young kids to do. I don't want to make him captain the first day he gets here.
I want him to earn everything he gets and not be blown away by it. That's why I like guys
that it played in the big house and it played at LSU. And what Washington took Washington
to the finals.
I mean, if this kid didn't have two ACLs,
I guarantee you the pro scouts
would have this guy right next to number one.
I agree with you on Pemax, Jr.
I like him.
I think he's going to get drafted in the first round
higher than what I think a lot of people are projecting right now.
But anyway, you know, with number two overall
in it being a quarterback,
It hasn't worked out for this franchise previously.
It hasn't been kind of a stable enough organization,
enough adults in the organization to kind of handle it.
What's your gut on the readiness of kind of the organization,
the front office, the coaching staff, et cetera,
to be able to handle number two overall,
and number two being a quarterback in a face of the franchise type?
I think our coaches and GM, I think this group has the pedigree,
And when this kid comes to that quarterback room, he's looking at a guy that's worked with Caleb and that has worked with the number one quarterback and pro in the world.
So that's going to be street credit.
You're not going to come in there day one and think that the staff, you know more than they do.
So that's an advantage we have based on the staff he put together.
But the second thing is that those first couple of practices, the speed of the speed.
of the game, this new level
of it. Most of these guys,
they're up to it, Drake,
and they're not trying to push him to start
because of that.
But LSU and here, hell, they may
have more town than we do.
Michigan, what J.J.'s been through,
Caleb, been through it.
So, you know,
Bo Nix might be a guy that ends up making it, may not.
I wouldn't take that. Not at this level.
There's only two guys, a couple of guys
at the number two spot if I stay.
Now, if somebody did something really crazy and really wanted it, it's that bad that I could make a killing and go down to five or six, I'd entertain it.
I'd entertain it because I might not be able to get Jaden or Drake or Caleb, but now if I'm dealing with, I've got Pennix and or McCarthy on it, I still think I could operate.
Why do you think they're going to take Drake May?
Well, the background about this offensive philosophy that they've been involved with,
and he's had some liking to it.
I love it, their mom is the word, but this league is all about relationships.
And when you do something, whether you've got a tricked offense,
and you know somebody that has a little bit of understanding about it,
and the others don't, that gives them a hell of an advantage.
because they're just saying that they're not going to do it,
but you know they are because that's who they are.
That's who he is.
And when the guy walks in a room,
you are taken back by physically,
he has no equal.
I mean, Drake May, they're thinking,
they're saying, well, look,
if we could fix him,
then he's perfect.
Because he's got a gun.
I mean, he's the most physically imposing guy out of all of them.
Yeah.
And so that's something that they,
coaches feel like they can fix things to fix people.
And that's who they are.
You know, Jaden, to me,
I don't know if Robert was that much bigger than him,
but I look at the guy in Baltimore,
nobody thinks he's not big enough.
Right.
He scares the hell out of it.
I'll look at this.
Who would I want to defend?
Who am I afraid to defend?
I don't shake in my boots
or Drake Mays at quarterback defensively.
Caleb is Houdini.
We've seen that.
Jaden is scary.
Now McCarthy, he still had some tricks in his bag
if I got a started, but I do think he is,
because he played for a pro coach and a badass.
And that means a lot.
When you can deal with Harbaugh and not be crumbled by it
and understand that means a lot.
But what Pinnix has done, man,
watching him throw the ball.
I mean, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever said.
And, dude, it's unbelievable.
Yeah.
How many long balls he connects with, and he had pro receivers,
and he hit him on stride over and over and over and over again.
And he played against the same competition that Caleb Williams did.
But the outlook did not look, didn't look nothing similar to it.
So he's like, I was real high on both, but not this high.
Not that high.
So this is what makes it interesting.
Now the bears are the bears.
I'd like to think that it's a done deal
that they're going to take Caleb,
but maybe they don't. Maybe somebody comes up.
See, that's the thing we don't know.
That's what makes draft day exciting,
because we really don't know.
All right, quick break.
We continue with Doc Walker

exciting, it's easy, it's different when it comes to DFS. It's just you against the numbers. It's
not you battling thousands of other players. It's picking more than or less than on two to six
player stat projections with odds. Like the other night, I had Caitlin Clark less than 33 points and
less than six three-pointers. It paid three to one. The NBA playoffs are coming up. The
NHL playoffs are coming up. Prize picks offers so many different opportunities on a nightly basis.

We continue with Doc.
They signed Marcus Mariotta in the offseason,
and there is discussion from, you know, real evaluators or former evaluators
that Drake May, out of all of them, might be.
need more time before he's ready to play.
If they did draft rate-made, are you okay with Marcus Mariotas starting the upcoming season?
Yeah, I am because they picked him for a reason.
They didn't have to.
I might have gone with the kid for Southern Cal who ended up going to Minnesota.
Darn.
Yeah, because I really like Sam.
I don't know why it hasn't worked better.
But when Sam came in in San Francisco, they didn't miss a beat.
he was in rhythm.
He's a big, strong, athletic, tough guy played linebacker growing up.
I like him a whole lot.
I don't know.
Well, he was with the Jets.
So you can't judge these kids when they're in bad organizations, and they don't get protected.
And so we've seen guys recover from the Jets before and go on and play good ball.
You've got to ask yourself, could you live with any of them?
I could live with any of them based on how they design it.
But the fact that they're telling you they're not comfortable with Drake, then why did it take Marcus?
Marcus shed his system down on a team.
But Marcus has a lot of talent, too.
And then what are they going to do with them?
Then it comes back to the style of play.
And they like his, I like a guy who's athletic.
I can't have a guy that's a stiff that gets killed in the pocket and I can't protect him.
Especially not having a Trent Williams left tackle.
That means a heck of a lot.
It means a lot.
Did you enjoy the hoops?
Oh, you know, I did.
I enjoyed, I enjoyed, to be watching the women's game a lot more over the past several years.
I love the progress.
Caitlin, the three ball, the magic, the her and Steph,
and have provided to the game.
They're doing something that's so few can do.
and dame time her i mean there's an escue there's maybe four or five people in the world
that are proficient from the distance that she is and they are
and look how the country just has gone berserk over it and it's legit it's not fake and her teams
win a lot of games i've never seen an undefeated team in sports get less publicity than the
gamecocks did and they were undefeated yeah that's the power that she demonstrated in ls you
A lot of those teams in Yukon and seeing Gino, the goat, come back,
and they did it without three stars.
They were short-handed, and damn they pulled it off.
So, no, it was exciting.
And the men, I like seeing bigs.
It was good to see a couple bigs, you know, back in ball,
but seeing coach early and seeing how this guy coaches.
He coaches hard.
The kids respond and defensively, they were just fun to watch.
them suffocate people.
And, of course, the NC State story and having people that,
that's what makes March so interesting,
you really can't predict it.
And seeing the blue blood bounced out and the one in Dunners and all that whole thing.
I'm so glad that that is playing out of style.
Yeah.
Because it's just not good basketball.
It's like these kids come out, they're not, they don't play defense.
You get them because they're shooters.
And everybody's on my NBA.
But what about?
college.
And you and color, I don't like the fact that that brand is successful.
I'm glad it doesn't work because I want to see team basketball, you know, and watching
Yukon play basketball.
That was fun, man.
Watching produce people.
See, I just, I love the game and love seeing the game play that way and coached that
way.
I thought it was, I thought it was really good.
I'm glad that the country has responded to it in a way.
that without any crap,
offer skill,
not looks,
but skill and teamwork.
So we've got to,
in our era now sports,
we just got to applaud team play.
Because everything's so me,
me, me, so, what about me?
I'm tweeting.
I'm, no,
team.
And so I'm just
old enough to still pull for team success.
Because it's pretty soon,
I mean,
mean, it won't matter because you can make money losing.
I mean, you can make money now, and that's what wagering, which is great, some of my best friends,
a massive, massive, massive wagerers.
And it's great for the game because it's put eyeballs against interest.
And in our town, when most of the teams don't win, why else would you go if you didn't lay something on it?
So, no, I get it.
But it's hard when you come up in an era where it was illegal.
You know, but nothing stayed the same.
You know, when I got driving, it was standard shift,
and you rolled up your windows with a little lever.
And you didn't wear seat belts.
So no seatbelts, man, with convertibles.
Right.
I'm telling you, it's unbelievable.
I tell people all the time.
Route 66 was real, been on it.
And, you know, so I'm trying not to be a stick in the mud,
but you had Gary Williams on a day
I just love it when you
when you got Gary on and you guys
are doing your coaches thing I love it
and you know he
went against the great grade
you know he didn't buy in and he won
he did his way even
even K KK went one way
but he reverted back you know okay I can't do it
that way and look at guys
we're losing goats now saving guys
are leaving this they ain't doing this
because I can't control the kids
because the kids are telling me how much do I
it, not what can I earn by being successful.
Caleb made $10 million.
Yeah.
In college.
Yep.
And I don't think that is really set in with any of us.
I don't think we can even understand it.
It's a great point.
I don't, I love Dion.
I love what Deion's doing.
But as a parent, I just don't know if I could do that.
My kid ran around with medallions and jam and driving.
And they bought, what?
I don't get it.
I know I can't stop it,
but I can't wait for us to get a grip on it
and mellow it out and put some guardrails up.
Because you and I both know,
most times you come out, you're 26, 27, 27, 28 years old,
and you're out of the sport.
Now these kids are going to be broke at 22 and 23.
when it don't work for them in the NFL,
NILs all out, then what?
So we're accelerating a lot of it.
We're playing really right now, Russian roulette.
We've had two vehicular incidents within a week span.
And the kid from Texas, I love it, big old defensive tackle.
Once you get in the news and the Kansas City Chief Wide Receiver
slams a Lamborghini,
you know, everybody saw it.
And you follow it up.
drunk driving within a week that's a problem that's a problem to me and i know you as a coach you don't
like it because it's like these kids have too much control and i'm going what in the hell we're
the parents we're the people that are mentoring these people to keep this thing in check it's a
runaway fire it really is but you know in thinking about in thinking about in thinking about
the draft class that will be coming in. This really will be the first draft class where,
you know, getting money and getting paid for the first time is not going to be a big deal.
Like you said, I mean, how much money Caleb Williams and how much money these guys have made
and hopefully how much they have socked away and not spent. But it's a long life, you know,
and I hope they still have the hunger and the desire to achieve and to earn because what they got in NIL, in some cases, is probably lifetime generational money.
In some cases, it is compared to, you know, where they came from.
But, you know, we all understand after taxes and after you start a family and you have kids and schools and the whole thing, it goes quickly.
So it's going to be interesting to see what these front offices are trying to figure out about these young kids that are coming into the league wealthy in some cases.
It may be a good thing because it may be that they've got experience with it already.
They've got experience in having money and handling money and managing money or being involved.
with people that are, you know, managing their money.
And in some cases, they've already been through the friends and family round, you know,
where everybody realizes, oh, you know, he's gotten paid.
So I don't know.
It's going to be an interesting thing to watch because this is the first real class of big-time NIL guys coming out.
Yeah, and after the pandemic and they're older, they've been a little bit more involved.
So, I mean, we have such an exciting group of linemen that are coming out.
And I know it's not a hot topic, but you and I both know that that's how you win.
And I'm so interested in watching what Harbaugh does with the charges,
outside of our interest here, that's the one program that I'm monitoring at the time.
Because how he constructs it, it's really the closest thing to Gibbs that I ever see or hear about.
because he's got a structured plan that's a system to it,
and they're going to interact.
He's already done it.
He's already done it before.
And I was really, it just really blew my mind that people didn't trust it.
But that's okay.
I think, you know, we'll see it.
And our situation is so settling.
Man, we've been through storms.
And right now, I mean, I see it like a rainbow.
And I'm hoping that we just keep moving forward.
and focus on how we practice, how they play,
everything that we have not experienced consistent success with in the past.
I just hope it's behind us.
I really do.
I mean, I would be so disappointed if the rug was pulled.
A lot of the shenanigans are behind us, I think.
Whether or not this is going to be the group that, you know,
builds a consistent winner, we don't know that. But I think a lot of the, you know, we're not talking
about investigations and, you know, Mary Joe White and Beth Wilkinson and, you know, Snyder testifying
or not testifying. We're not talking about that this year for the first time in several years.
So that's a good thing. Yeah. It's a nice point. I don't want to, I don't want stadium talk. I don't
care if they play, you know,
and they play
at Audi. All I care
about is that we get back
to fundamental football.
You know many times we've discussed
this over the years. How many times
we've been stopped in short
yardage situations?
I mean,
it's just, it's so embarrassing.
We had two points, stance, and
shotgun, a goal line. I mean,
it's just,
it's just.
Doc love short-yarded shotgun.
Oh, you love to see them lined up in shotgun with five wides on fourth and one.
Yeah, I mean, it's one of your favorite things.
I really do.
Yeah, you.
Well, you, I mean, you don't like it either.
Like you say, you'll never understand it.
But that's just you, as you say.
No, I'm not, yeah, I'm not, I'm not playing on changing.
I'm just, I'm excited about it again.
You want to be a fan.
They want to be encouraged
and our division has
there's no sympathy for you at all.
We can't let the Giants
beat us to the punch again.
That's the most heartbreaking part
about this.
All right.
We can't beat the Giants.
It seems like it's been a while
since we've beaten the Giants.
It seems like it's been a while
since we've beaten anybody.
So when is your
you know, the draft is
you know, two weeks
from tomorrow night. When is your big board
going to be up and ready?
Well, I'm waiting for
Chris Kinnard to announce where you're going to be.
I'm going to just show up wherever you are.
And it's not me. It's you.
Everybody's waiting.
You're big board every year. I mean, I can't tell you
how many times that you just,
you made the pick before it was even announced
by the commissioner.
Yeah, that we agree with that. One of my
favorite moments in life
was that grievous
pre-draft show we did. It wasn't
grieves. It wasn't grieves.
Yes, it was. No, it wasn't. We were at grieves
and false. Yes, we were.
No, we weren't. No, we weren't.
Yes, we were. No, we were at, what you might call it?
Buffalo, Buffalo Wings.
No, no, that was the other one.
We did four or five of them. The night,
we did more than that. The night that
we had the feed
and we were a little bit delayed on radio.
And you didn't see it.
I thought a TV monitor.
And you were back,
your back was to it.
Yeah.
We were at grievous.
I don't, we're grievous.
Yes, we were.
Yes, we were.
I'll never forget it.
Because the single funniest thing I've ever experienced.
Doc.
Because before you caught on to knew what was going on.
I was, I thought you were a genius.
I could see it.
I saw, I could see it being posted.
I said, well, you know, I think, I'm going on a lip.
Yeah.
And I hear it, and you were, look on your face, but the receiver, when we took the kid from Baylor,
no, from TCU, Josh Doxon.
Yeah, from TCU, Josh Dox. Man, that was, now we have the moment.
And again, wherever you and Ben are going to be, I'm going to show up.
No, well, first of all, what you were just talking about, let me just explain.
Doc and I did the draft show for 980 many years in a row, and we were always live somewhere.
You think it was grievous this time.
But we were on a bit of a delay.
And so the commission, but the TV was live right.
And Doc could see the TV and the commissioner.
So, you know, it would be like, all right, Doc, Kansas City's on the clock.
What do you think they'll do here?
And Doc, for about five straight picks, picked exactly the person that was drafted.
And I'm like, oh, my God, you are rolling.
And then finally I caught that there was a TV in view of him
where he was picking it up a bit early.
And then the best part is after you would say,
you know, I think they're going to, I think they're going to take,
I can't even think of anybody.
I think they're going to take Hunter Henry,
a tight end from Alabama or Arkansas.
That's who they're going to take.
And then we're all right, let's go to the commissioner.
and then we would play the commissioner's sound.
The Chargers select Hunter Henry from Arkansas.
I just look at you.
And I'm like, how did you do that?
And he did it for like five guys, straight guys before I finally.
I did by five guys.
I just got a feeling, man.
But remember, I called Josh Doxon.
I called Josh Doxon.
You called Josh Doxon.
And I almost threw up in my mouth.
I could not believe.
Without a TV.
Without a TV.
Without a TV.
You did it without TV.
You know, Casey.
and the whole thing about TCU.
No, it was some great moments.
We had, that was, I missed that.
I really do.
But it's okay.
We'll get back.
No, but there was also one year where we didn't know anything,
and we were having a few pops on the broadcast,
and at the end, you just, you asked Russell.
We had Russell on, who was our beat reporter,
and you asked him, and you made up a pick.
You made up somebody's name for,
from Florida State. What did you think of, what do you think about him? And Russell went on for
like 15 minutes about him. And you made up the whole, you made up the guy. I made the whole thing up.
And Russell, Russ went through all, because I mean, he had break down a 150 different people.
Yeah, I think you thought you were talking about somebody else. But yeah. Yeah, he had all that paper
stuff. He was going through his spot. Man, that was the funniest thing. No, it was some good.
And nobody knows.
See, Chuck was not happy about that.
Do you remember that?
He's like, you guys shouldn't have done that.
And we're like, at that point, it was like midnight.
And nobody was listening at that point.
Yeah, yeah.
It was Buffalo Wilde.
Wherever we were, yeah, Chuck, we had those happier than he was, it was so much fun.
But nobody knows.
And the draft and I would be in Detroit, I'm going to call Dan Miller.
I'm so happy for the city of Detroit.
That gives me hope.
I mean, they were awful.
The Bengals have come from the dead.
Detroit has come from the dead.
So I know it's possible.
It's possible.
Yeah, amen.
But you got to get a quarterback.
All right, let me know when the big board's done,
and we'll do something right before the draft.
Thanks.
Yeah, me and you and stand it.
Absolutely.
You got it.
All right.
See you.
All right.
Thanks, man.
Doc Walker, everybody.
At Rick Doc Walker on Twitter,
and you can link to his podcast on Patreon.
on right from there. All right, that's it for the day. Back tomorrow with Tommy.
