Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. The show's presenting sponsor is always window nation.
Starting point is 00:00:15 86690 Nation or windownation.com. If you need new windows, mention my name. They'll come out and give you a fast, free, in-home estimate. So Tommy, on radio yesterday, and I did not do this on the podcast, I wanted to save it for you. I talked about how Washington's over under number is seven and a half. We talked about that the other day on the podcast, and that unlike Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow in recent years, Dak Prescott in recent years, Patrick Mahomes this year, where when they missed big portions of seasons or the entirety of seasons, their teams are always viewed as the following season.
Starting point is 00:01:00 well, I mean, Burrough's going to be back. So Cincinnati's definitely a threat to be a playoff team. Oh, well, Lamar's back and healthy. If he plays 17 games, the Ravens are Super Bowl favorites. Dak Prescott's back to Cowboys are going to be much better than they were last year. And I have not felt that the conversation about our team fits that same box. Like a lot of the conversation about our team has been, man, they really regressed last year.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Jaden Daniels really took a major sophomore season step back. And there's no discussion of what the reason was for it. I don't know how people have missed this. I'm not comparing Jaden Daniels to Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Joe Burrow in terms of what they had accomplished when they got injured. And the expectation that if they came back, it would be a good season. but what he did in 2024 was all time. And this time last year, most people thought of him as, if not top five, top six,
Starting point is 00:02:11 not far outside of that in terms of quarterbacks. And so I just have felt like, hello, have you guys missed the fact that he only played in four complete football games out of 17? and so I got a lot of response to that. This one comes from Anthony. I blame Dan Snyder for this S. It seems like people think he's still in the building. So to me, this season is very important to once and for all get rid of the Dan
Starting point is 00:02:43 Snyder BS out of people's minds. Reef writes, the main people pushing that narrative are the ones who are uncomfortable with their success in 24 and didn't want to see him play at a high level to begin with. It's wishful thinking. And then Warren writes, that's true, but we Washington fans know what Jaden's capable of doing. He already did it in his rookie year, and he's going to do it again. Look, I do think that some of the thought last year was, well, Washington got lucky in that first year. They won all these close games. They played these backup quarterbacks. They, you know, had to come from behind and Jaden
Starting point is 00:03:27 Daniels, you know, was great. And there's no way that they can, you know, replicate that. But the reason they were winning all those close games, the reason that they ended up winning 12 games more than anything else was Jaden Daniels. So maybe I'm being sensitive, overly sensitive to this, and maybe I'm just missing the people that are saying, look, Washington should rebound. I mean, they should have a good season as long as the quarterback's back. He didn't play last year for the most part. But I don't hear that. Do you? No, I don't hear that, but I certainly understand the reasons. I think, you know, the first email you read, I think there's something to that. I think there's still some Dan Snyder left
Starting point is 00:04:13 over feelings from maybe the uninformed beyond Washington, who's still. still think they're just the same old commanders slash Redskins. You know, they haven't delved that far to determine that it's a completely different organization. You know, you don't shed a reputation just like that. Even if you have, even if the people who created that reputation are long gone, it takes time for that to happen. and you're right. I mean, the thing is that
Starting point is 00:04:52 everything you said about, you know, the team maybe being lucky playing weak opponents, but the reason they won all those games was because of the quarterback. The roster was not very good. Okay, the difference between winning and losing
Starting point is 00:05:09 those games was the quarterback, and they should get more credit for that. But, you know, the track record's pretty short. I think you are being a little bit sensitive because you have so much invested in this guy. I concede that. I just think, like sometimes when these are the conversations, I always picture myself or try to consider myself doing sports talk radio in another market, just talking about the NFL and talking about, you know, what, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:41 maybe I'm in an AFC West market, and I'm talking about the NFC and the NFC East. I just can't believe that I wouldn't know that the reason that team fell apart wasn't because they were lucky in year one. It wasn't because they got to face some backup quarterbacks in 2024. It was because the guy that was responsible more than anything else in 2024 didn't play football in 2025. Like it was a massive injury. He got shelved. That was a big NFL story in December when they basically put them on ice for the rest of the year. This guy who was a year ago, regardless of whether or not you thought Washington would take a step back,
Starting point is 00:06:31 even if you thought Jaden wouldn't have the same year, no one was thinking, oh, that was a one-in-dunner. That's a one-hit wonder. I mean, all of the quarterback rankings this time last year had him. him at, if not the elite level, the next tier. I mean, he was no worse than 8, 9, 10 in the league, and many people had him top five in the league. I did. You mentioned they shelved them last year.
Starting point is 00:07:02 They basically put them on ice at the end of the year, which really must probably drive them nuts that he played in that football game. Oh, I said that. Yeah, I talked about that. I mean, they said, you know, We protected you at the end of last year and took our lumps doing it. And then you go play in this thing. That must have pissed them off.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Oh, let me just tell you. There wasn't a lot of cheering that he was playing in this game. I think they got so much money. This is a theory. I think they just got paid so much money by the Saudis initially to do this. That it was like, you know, there's nothing in the country. contract that says we can prevent him from doing this. And my God, I mean, I can't, I can't tell him not to take that kind of money, you know, so, but, but a lot of fingers crossed. That just popped into my
Starting point is 00:07:59 head. No, you're right. You pointed out that they did, they did put them on ice last year. Yeah, they, they, to protect them. Oh, I got so many, I mean, overwhelming kind of negative feedback on the Jaden shouldn't have played in the flag football game conversation. And I think I said, because we took calls on it yesterday or the day before I'm forgetting now, but somebody really got after me and I just said that his own
Starting point is 00:08:28 team put him in bubble wrap at the end of the season. Yeah. I mean, nobody thinks that he was so hurt he couldn't play. Yeah. Yeah. That's probably the best point. But, you know, I mean, if what you say is probably true, won't this year be even sweeter, you'll be able to say, look, you know, how could you ignore my guy? Won't the year be even sweeter unless you expect less of him this year? No, it's, for me, is it going to be sweeter? I guess there will be some of that, because even from our own fans, there was, I mean, I hear this all.
Starting point is 00:09:10 all the time. I've certainly talked about this ad nauseum, I'm sure, for some of you. I just don't get the team regressed, he regressed conversation. I don't understand how anybody, anywhere, this market, outside of this market, if you were paying attention to the NFL season, how anybody could say that, they didn't have their best players for the mass majority of their games. I've said this a million times since the season ended, even towards the end of the season, when the best player on your team is your starting quarterback and he barely plays, your season is doomed, nine and a half times out of 10, doomed. You've got no shot. And so why the talk of, oh, yeah, they're certainly not what they were in 2024. And the people that called it before the season, Tom,
Starting point is 00:10:10 because a lot of people said, yeah, I don't see Washington duplicating 2024. Very lucky. Fourth down success. You know, all the stuff that, you know, sort of went against the averages, right? And they are, you know, holding up their arms in a V like they were right for those reasons. No, they were right because the team was the most injured team in the league when it came to its best players. Specifically, their quarterback. And it's funny, you take the quarterback out of the situation. Their best players weren't that good.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Yeah, but the players that were good got hurt. Terry McClorn didn't play a lot. Dorrance Armstrong, who was having probably the best season of his career and the best season for anybody on defense missed the last 10 and a half games. Austin Echler was probably their best running back. He didn't even play really at all. Yes. They were good in the context of the team, but we're not talking about any pro bowlers here.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Well, Terry's been a pro bowler, right? Hasn't Terry? How many times? I'm sure he had. Well, he was a second team all pro in 2024. Okay. You got me looking this up. I mean, we should know this with all of the conversations we've had about Terry McClorn.
Starting point is 00:11:34 He's a two-time pro bowler, and he would. He was a pro bowler and he was a second team all pro in 2024. They had four, did they have four all pros after 2024? Bobby Wagner and Frankie Louvo on defense and Terry McCorn and Jaden Daniels on offense, right? I think so. Okay. I could be wrong on Jayden. Maybe Jayden wasn't an all pro.
Starting point is 00:12:02 The comeback is going to be even sweeter. Yeah. And hopefully you. Yeah. I mean, hopefully. Hopefully. Look, what's in everybody's mind, and this goes back to the flag football thing, is injury. That's the thing that's in everybody's mind when it comes to Jaden Daniels right now.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Like, I know that there are probably some people out there that really didn't pay attention to the fact that he didn't play last year. 13, you know, games, didn't play in 10 games total, but in 13, strong. start to finish, that think, oh, yeah, you know, I knew it. I knew he couldn't throw across the middle. I knew his to pressure to sack percentage would be too high. This guy doesn't see it. He's not very good. All he wants to do is run. He's a running quarterback. There's some of that from people who felt that way about him coming out and just look at like the stats, like literally, just look at the stats and say, oh man, I mean, they were five and 12. He only threw for 1262 yards and eight touchdowns. Yeah, dude, because he didn't play most of the year. Now, do you think he feels this?
Starting point is 00:13:18 Oh, I think everybody out. Let me just tell you, there was a conversation that I had with somebody right when the season ended, and I expressed my frustration. By the way, I did it with Dan Quinn, when I had Quinn on a month ago. And I said, how do you go about evaluating a season in which you didn't have the players you intended to play this year on the field for much of the season? And he said, I'm glad you said that. He said, it's very hard to do that. What we have to go back and evaluate, and then he described nothing about the football team or the players. He said, we got to go back and evaluate why we were so injured.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Did we prepare incorrectly? Did we train the wrong way? Did we practice at the wrong times? Was our nutrition? That's their evaluation, which by the way makes sense to me. That's what you should evaluate. How did we become a team that couldn't play any of our best players for enough games to make us competitive? Maybe there is something that they did that was wrong leading up to it that led to all
Starting point is 00:14:28 these injuries. Look, Jaden's injuries, the Seattle injury was a fluke at the end of the game. He shouldn't have been in the game. By the way, I would have evaluated, let's not leave our best player in a game in which we're down by 38 with eight minutes to go and have him run RPO's, where he in close quarters where he actually ends up keeping the ball and getting tackled and hurt. And then, you know, the injury against Minnesota, he throws the pick and he's chasing the guy down and gets, you know, elevated to a pretty high level off the ground. But there was another conversation that I had right when the season ended, and this person just said, how does anybody not understand why we won five games?
Starting point is 00:15:16 Like, I don't, and I said, yeah, the conversation about the regression of the team in year two makes just no sense to anybody that paid attention that has a brain and has watched football before because injuries other in order Tommy the most impactful to the final result of a game and a season in order the quarterback and then injuries those are the two top things you've got you cannot be decimated by injuries and you got to have a quarterback if you've got a quarterback and you're a healthy football team, you're probably going to win more games than you lose more often than not. I don't know. I just, I don't know why when I listen to even people that I like, and they've got, they're not even mentioning Washington. They're not even talking about
Starting point is 00:16:12 Jaden Daniels of the same clip they were last year. It's, there's this belief that I have that they think it's because the team wasn't good last year. Like, Jayden's not as good as we thought. Like, I bet you if I pull up, you know, right now, quarterback rankings heading into, you know, 2026. Let's see if there's anybody that's just done NFL. Oh, it's all draft stuff. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:41 But there's the theme for 2026. Chip on your shoulder. That's the theme. chip on your shoulder. That's the best substance that you can add to a team. You know, I always love when everyone talks about I got a chip on my shoulder. Well, this team should have a chip on the shoulder. Well, our quarterback tried to start, started the process of getting that chip,
Starting point is 00:17:06 you know, off his shoulder in that flag football game. Apparently he played really well. Yes. All right, I found Fox Sports three days ago, did. quarterback stock market 2026 starters ranked alright here we go number one quarterback in the league
Starting point is 00:17:26 Josh Allen two Matt Stafford three Joe Burrow four Jordan Love five Drake May six Patrick Mahomes man Mahomes maybe people have forgot about Mahomes after the ACL injury Justin Herbert May ahead of those guys
Starting point is 00:17:42 Justin Herbert 7 Brock Purtt 8 Dak Prescott, 9, Lamar 10, Jared Goff 11, Trevor Lawrence 12, Caleb Williams 13, and Jaden Daniels 14. Wow. Now that here's what they do right. Here's what they do right. So at least they acknowledge what happened last year. Will he stay healthy enough to dominate in the ways he did during the second half of his rookie season?
Starting point is 00:18:13 I don't know if it was just the second half. Yeah, I don't know about that. And that's a ridiculous list to have Brock Purdy ahead of Lamar. Sometimes I think these lists are specifically for the reason of generating ire. Yeah. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. They absolutely are.
Starting point is 00:18:33 So you got to not take that bait. Yeah. All right. I have some NCAA tournament suite 16 talk. on this show today, including Smell Test Picks. You have some opening day. Today's opening day, people. It's opening day.
Starting point is 00:18:53 The Yankees, by the way, in the first game of the year last night, crushed the Giants 7 to nothing. Today we get not the entire league in action, but it looks like about half the league in action, including Cade Cavali on the mound for
Starting point is 00:19:09 the Nats at Wrigley. That's a pretty cool opening day, by the way, to open up at Wrigley. Yeah. Yeah, it is. You know? Yes. Absolutely. So Tommy's got...
Starting point is 00:19:21 Our favorite to win their division this year, I believe. Wait, say that again? The Cubs are favorite to win the Central Division this year in a National League, I think. That's not who you picked. Yeah, I did. Oh, you did? You picked them. Yeah, you did pick them.
Starting point is 00:19:38 But you've got a rematch of the World Series when we get to October. Dodgers, Toronto. Yes, I did. Yeah. All right. We'll get to all that and a lot more after this. This morning before leaving the house, I couldn't find my glasses. I'm sure this happens to a lot of people that wear glasses. You fall asleep in bed with your glasses on.
Starting point is 00:23:08 I fell asleep last night. I don't even know what I was watching. What were we watching? Oh, we watched something on Netflix last night about 1975. You would, you'd really like it. I've watched it. I've watched it. Did you like it?
Starting point is 00:23:24 It's a documentary. Yeah, very much so. What a, I mean, I am a child of those years. And I don't remember 75 being any, you know, different than the rest of them, but you probably do. But what a shit show of a year that was. 75. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Yeah, I remember, we watched that documentary a while back. It's pretty good. Yeah, it was pretty good. So, Tommy, I still haven't found my glasses. Get out of here. It's like one of those situations. Yeah, I had to drive into work this morning. I'm not blind without them.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Obviously, I'm not blind. I wouldn't have been driving into work. But, you know, that's for law enforcement out there. Yeah, there's distance. shoes for sure. But I couldn't find them. It's like, well, they have to be in bed somewhere. Maybe they fell behind the bed. Maybe they're underneath the bed. Maybe they're in between the pillows. Maybe they're in between the various levels of, I don't even know how many levels of covers we have. My wife likes it to be warm. I would sleep with the window open every night, even in the wintertime.
Starting point is 00:24:36 But couldn't find them. Just disappeared. gone. Okay. Okay, let me be your mother here for a minute. Okay, mom. You have one pair of glasses? Good question. I have a backup pair and I put them on and clearly the backup pair is not the exact same prescription. And I think the last time I went and got glasses, which was only about a year ago, I think they changed the prescription. And so the glasses that I was wearing when I went to get the new glasses are the pair that are my backup pair. And it's a different prescription and I could tell right when I put them on. And would it have been better to drive with those? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Maybe. But I decided not to. I decided to wait to call the place to say, hey, whatever I bought a year ago, I need those again. because they have not, they've not been found in my home. Well, here's what you need to do. I mean, far be from me to tell you how to spend your money. Yeah, glasses are expensive. You keep a pair of glasses in your car.
Starting point is 00:25:50 You should keep a pair of glasses in your workplace and want it home. I have. Okay. Okay, but I don't want to get into this. Nobody cares about this. I don't wear glasses when I'm reading. I don't wear glasses when I'm sitting. in front of a computer. My vision actually has improved as I've gotten older. People say that that
Starting point is 00:26:13 happens. It's happened to me. The glasses that I have are just strictly for distance. Now, I have a pair of reading glasses, you know, or not even reading glasses. I have a pair of non-prescription glasses that I'll wear when I'm in front of a computer, or I'll wear when I'm doing a TV hit or or doing the show during the radio show because it's now streamed on YouTube. But those aren't prescription. My prescriptions, I can't wear and read. I can't, they're not short distance glasses. I'm just, I just am frustrated that I couldn't find my glasses this morning.
Starting point is 00:26:54 That's happened a lot, and you always find them. You always find them. And I, well, you know, I would, I'd be glad to talk to you about my eyes, but you don't like me talking about my eyes. you don't talk about your eyes, you talk about these surgical procedures to your eyes. I would never make the audience endure that. Every time you start down that path, I can just hear people hitting the 10-second fast-forward button or the 30-second fast-forward button.
Starting point is 00:27:24 But on the other hand, I don't wear glasses anymore. Yeah. I've never opted for, you know, LASIC. I just, you know, there are people. See, I didn't. didn't. What I did was you wait until you're old enough to you have cataracts and then your insurance will cover. Glasses are so expensive.
Starting point is 00:27:46 Speaking of which, if I can indulge myself, which I tend to do all the time, yesterday was my birthday. Oh my God. Happy birthday to you. Yes. Yesterday was my birthday. I turned 72. Wow.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Oh, my God. And I know. I know I'm older than everybody. So what did you do on your birthday? Tell me what you did. Well, nothing particular. I had to go do my taxes. That's a... That's a wonderful birthday. Yes. Well, actually, we got good news on the taxes, so it did turn out to be... Okay. It did turn out pretty good. Yes. That was a gift. But what I like, and I know you don't like Facebook and don't do Facebook anymore.
Starting point is 00:28:33 No. But I still like Facebook. I still get a lot out of it. Including all the birthday wishes. Yes. Yeah. I like it. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:28:43 I hate that. I love that. God. I mean, oh. Did you tweet something out wishing yourself a happy birthday? No, no, no, no. But it's in my profile. Uh-huh. You know?
Starting point is 00:28:57 Yeah. My birthday is in my profile. But here's the best part. You've heard of Wesley Walker, right? He used to play for the Jet's receiver. By the way, didn't he go blind? I don't think so. I must be thinking about somebody else.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Yeah. But he was a very good wide receiver for the Jets. For those teams that I rooted for in the late 70s and early 80s. Right. I mean, I saw him play live probably about a half dozen times. And he was one of my favorite jet players. And he's got your birthday on. He's on Facebook.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Uh-huh. Okay. And, you know, I did one of those things. I asked to be his friend years ago, and he accepted it. So I'm friends with Wesley Walker, purely from a fandom. Right. The point of view. You've never told me about your Wesley Walker fandom.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Never. I would have remembered that. He wasn't my favorite. He wasn't my, Bruce Harper was my favorite. Oh, the running back. Yeah. Yeah. But Wesley Walker was right up there.
Starting point is 00:30:02 That was a team that would have played the Reds team. I know. In that Super Bowl, that would have been so great. Well, you know why they probably didn't. Why? The controversy in the AFC championship game about the faster jets against the slower dolphins, and the dolphins didn't put the tarp on the field during an absolute monsoon the day before. Yes, that is what happened.
Starting point is 00:30:29 It was a mud bath. But they still should have won. You know, they still, still Richard Todd was. was lacking as a starting quarterback. But, but, so, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:41 I didn't get just a Facebook notice, happy birthday from Wesley Walker. He sent me a Facebook message, wishing me a happy birthday, which requires more effort than just,
Starting point is 00:30:56 it does. It does. Happy birthday on your, on your Facebook page. Yeah, you have to send a message. you know, it requires more effort. So that made my day to get a Facebook birthday message from Wesley Walker.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Maybe I've got to get back on Facebook just for that. I'm trying to think who I don't know who I care to get a Facebook message for my birthday. I'm sure there's somebody that would send me. I do remember and still I get a lot of, I don't know, I guess it's on Twitter. or maybe there's still a profile that exists on Facebook. But I still get a lot of stuff on my birthdays. The issue for me is you have to respond to everybody. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Oh, great to hear from you. Thank you. That's so nice. You just post a one big response on your Facebook page. Yeah. And if people don't see it, they don't see it. I don't respond to it. I mean, I got hundreds of, of, of,
Starting point is 00:32:02 Facebook, you know, birthday wishes. So I'll just pull one note on there saying thank you everybody for the wishes. And thank you in particular, Wesley Walker, for the Facebook message. You should have sent that one out, just saying, one of the best wide receivers in Jets history with, you know, I don't know, can you retweet like you do on Twitter on Facebook? You can't. Can you just post it? Okay. You can't really read it. But you can post it and comment on it.
Starting point is 00:32:37 You can share it and comment on it. Yeah. You see, you should share that one. You should share that one with a compliment about what a great player he was. Facebook is friendly. You can share things as opposed to X. Let me just tell you something. The reason I got off Facebook several years ago,
Starting point is 00:32:58 was it just got to the point where it was becoming unfriendly. There was way, instead of the limited character count, which I know we don't have on Twitter anymore if you pay, but I just remember, I loved Facebook there for a while. I mean, it was great reconnecting with,
Starting point is 00:33:20 you know, old friends and, and acquaintances from back in the day. But for, I remember just getting, a ton of show response to Facebook. And it was like, oh, my God. I mean, look, the same thing happens email-wise.
Starting point is 00:33:38 It's just that kind of everybody could read it off of a post. Whatever. Social media, Tommy, I just, it's a necessity for what we do, but I don't enjoy it at all. I think it's the biggest time suck in my life. And I don't make it a time suck like some people. people do. But I just, I find that Twitter in particular is really a step down from where we'd like to think we are. From civilization? Yeah. For the most part. You know, I, I, I enjoy social media. I mean, I don't feel. You need to play golf. You need to get, you need a hobby. You need a hobby where you're
Starting point is 00:34:25 hanging out and smoking cigars is Shelley. Well, let me tell you something. Golf is pretty much drinking and smoking cigars and riding around in a cart. This is the irony of Tommy hating golf. Smoke cigars, drink beer, ride around in a cart. It's made for him. And yet he despises it so much. Yeah. All right. Are we done with... What do I think about my birthday? That's kind of maudlin. What? But I'm going to bring it up anyway. but it's kind of important.
Starting point is 00:34:57 It was important for me. I outlived my father. Is this the birthday that made that? Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah. So everything from here is your father passed away from? He had congestive heart failure.
Starting point is 00:35:16 Okay. And my heart, I know this is a miracle of modern science. You know, when you look at me, you think, I'm a walking heart attack, but I've had, I get echo, I get the, you know, echo cardiograms. I've gotten the stress tests over the years and everything's good. That's awesome. You know, and you walk a lot, too. Yes, I do.
Starting point is 00:35:42 Yeah, my dad, my dad didn't really, didn't do anything like that. And I walked like two to three miles a day. Well, I think we're going to be doing, I, I've said, my wife has, often said to me, how much longer do you think you want to do this radio and podcast thing? I mean, for those that have never heard me say this, the next time my wife listens to the radio show or the podcast will truly be the first time. She couldn't care less about sports or any of this stuff. And she's got three boys. And we have certainly, she's gotten into things, you know, during the 33 years we've been married now.
Starting point is 00:36:26 But just out of, you know, proximity, I mean, there's been no choice. Like, you know, during, she actually loves the rhythm of football season. She loves that football's on TV during the fall, but she didn't grow up with that at all. I mean, it's not something that was, you know, familiar to her. But she's, so she says, you know, sometimes, how often are you? you're going to do this? And I'm like, well, I can do this podcast with Tommy for the next 20 years, easily. So I look forward to celebrating 82 and 92 with you, partner. Okay, boss. Seems like a reasonable goal. Knock on wood, fingers crossed. If we just stay out
Starting point is 00:37:12 of flag football games, we should be good. All right, uh, sweet 16, four games tonight. And I will finish up with the smell test on the show in the final segment today. I do have two picks for tonight. But I'm telling you, Tommy, this is a great Sweet 16 layout tonight and tomorrow night. I mean, these are really good matchups. I think I talked about just the coaching matchups. I mean, Sean Miller, Matt Painter in the first game tonight. Yeah. I really have been a Matt Painter fan for so long. And I think even before it became kind of in vogue to say, my God, Matt Painter's such a great coach at Purdue. He's, you know, there were those couple of years where they're like, God, he's underrated. And then finally he got to a final four, got to a championship game,
Starting point is 00:38:03 hasn't won it. But the thing about Purdue that's so interesting year and year out is they've got four year players. Like, I don't know how they pull that off. You know, their back court, Braden Smith and Fletcher lawyer. These are four-year seniors, same spot. And if you believe in guard play, being super important to the outcome of these NCAA tournament games, their back court is sensational. And the game that they had against Miami on Sunday, Miami was a good team, too. Braden Smith didn't play his best. Turned it over a bunch, but lawyer was unconscious. And that's kind of how they've done it. If one isn't playing great, the other picks it up. But when they're both playing well, they're difficult to beat. But Sean Miller is a really good basketball coach. He's
Starting point is 00:38:51 never been beyond the elite eight. Even those great teams at Arizona never been beyond the elite eight. I think I've told you this story before that when Gary retired from Maryland, Sean Miller was basically going to get the job. I mean, it was basically he was leading. He was leading. Arizona. He was coming to Maryland. And the athletic director at the time apparently wouldn't give him one thing that he was asking for, which is one academic exception. Think about that, you know, those things now. Like, they just don't even matter. I mean, Sean Miller was a cheater at Arizona. He's on, he got wiretapped, you know, basically lying, as did Will Wade and others. and they're still coaching.
Starting point is 00:39:40 And what they were, you know, accused of is like nothing now. But Sean Miller was going to be the head coach at Maryland before Mark Turgeon. He was choice number one. He said, I'm coming. I just need a commitment that I get one academic exception a year. And he got that at Arizona. And they wouldn't give it to him at the time. And so he backed out.
Starting point is 00:40:05 And apparently, I think it was in a hotel room in Vegas somewhere. So, well, if I'm not getting that, I'm not signing the deal that's in front of me. But he's been a really good coach who's just never gotten past the Elite 8, even with some really good Arizona team. So that game should be a really good game. Ben McCollum might be the best coach in college basketball. That's not an exaggeration. That matchup with Fred Hoyberg, Nebraska, Iowa, and all Big Ten matchup tonight in Houston should be a really good basketball game. Iowa's got a player in Bennett Sturts, who is definitely going to be an NBA player, probably late first round.
Starting point is 00:40:44 They just handle everything so well. Nebraska plays a lot of five out. They're going to shoot a lot of threes. That should be a good game. Arkansas, Arizona tonight in San Jose in the West region. That may be the best overall matchup in terms of the two teams. It's funny because it's one of the bigger point spreads. but Arkansas Tommy my God is this a grown man team every dude looks like he's 30 and looks like he's been in the NBA for seven years and you know Darius A Cuff Jr. for me has risen into that number two spot I would take him before Darren Peterson I know a lot of you think that's nuts and I get it he doesn't guard but to me he looks like Dame Lillard looks like Derek Rose as a scorer as an offensive player. And then Arizona, Tommy Lloyd does such a great job. He's, by the way, being talked about for the Carolina job. So we'll see what happens there. I think Billy Donovan's going to get that job. We'll see what happens. And then Illinois, Houston in the final game tonight, I mean, Brad Underwood, Kelvin Sampson. I think people want Kelvin Sampson in the sport to win a national championship
Starting point is 00:42:00 more than anybody else in the sport. He is so highly respected, so well-liked, and he's so tough. Like, he is no nonsense. He's an old-school coach. This team, I don't think, is his best team. And I think they could get tested tonight. But they're playing basically at home, you know, at the Toyota Center in Houston. And we'll see if that ends up making a difference.
Starting point is 00:42:27 It probably will. but four great games tonight. I do like Purdue to win. I do like Iowa to win against Nebraska. I like Arizona to beat an Arkansas team. This is one of the matchups that Arkansas probably didn't want in a sweet 16. And as much as I want Kelvin Sampson to win, I kind of like Illinois tonight. God, they can score Tommy.
Starting point is 00:42:53 I mean, I think Raftery had the line during their win. over VCU the other day. He said, take me to the Balkans because all their players, they've got four, I'm sorry, they've got five Eastern European players on their team, all of whom are significant for them. You know, college basketball has really become in so many places, and in this tournament, you know, a foreign sport. I mean, these players that are,
Starting point is 00:43:28 playing internationally at high levels. They're playing in college before they get to the NBA. But, you know, it's Murkovich, it's Evacic, it's Petrovich, it's Stoyakovich, who, by the way, is Pedro Stoyakovich's son. That should be a good game. I like, I kind of like Illinois, even though I would love to see Kelvin Samson's team win the whole thing. Do you have any thoughts on the games tonight?
Starting point is 00:43:55 Nothing in particular. It's just a great day, opening day. the NACs are on the Nats are on somewhere on TV. Did you notice they announced all the channels and you got to go looking for it depending on your
Starting point is 00:44:10 cable network, it's a different channel? Well, we'll get to that. I want you to save that for the next segment because I want you to talk about opening day and I was going to ask you how the hell other than MLB TV streaming how the hell we're able to watch the game today. We will get to that and

All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelly's. Well, like I said earlier, my hobby is smoking cigars at Shelly's backroom at 1331 S Street, Northwest, in the district. I would tell you, if you're in the area tonight, I would pick Shelly's to watch some NCAA basketball. They have eight high-definition televisions throughout the two bars.
Starting point is 00:47:06 You know, Shelly's has two different bars. Yeah. Two different rooms. Two different rooms. Yeah. Yes. Will there be a baseball room and a basketball room tonight, do you think? Well, I think they'll have both on TV because it is, I mean, they're very devoted to baseball and the nationals,
Starting point is 00:47:26 but the nationals are an afternoon game. But they'll probably have some night baseball. ball on as well. And they have these soft cushioning chairs. They have these great couches. You know, they have the great food, drink, and cigar menu. You can bring your own cigars to Shelly's, or you can buy from their great selection that they have available.
Starting point is 00:47:51 But either way, you can rent a humidor at Shelly's backroom to keep your cigars. That brings me to the cigar fact of the day, the Shelley's custom blend cigar fact of the day. Well, wait a minute. Do we need a sounder for this, the Shelley's cigar fact of the day? Oh, it's a little bit too late for that. It is too late. You didn't prepare me. I could insert one at the end.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Oh, that's okay. Have a party, okay? Okay. Shelly, according to the cigarplacebiz.com, the oldest cigar ever found, was a 600-year-old group of cigars that were found in Guatemala, sealed in a clay pot, and still good. What? Because they were sealed so well. 600 years ago?
Starting point is 00:48:49 Yes. 600 years ago, by the way, America wasn't even discovered yet. I know. We were still, let's see, let's do the math on this. We're still about 56 years away from California. Columbus. No, no, wait, wait, 66 years ago, 1492 from being discovered. 600 years in a clay pot. Sealed clay pot, airtight conditions.
Starting point is 00:49:12 Hmm. Wow. Now, Shelley's, now, shelley's, humidor's, I can't guarantee you they'll keep for 600 years, but they'll keep very well as good as any humidor you'll find anywhere. And it's convenient to have your cigars right there for you at Shelley's, to pick and save whenever you see fit. You can find out more by going to shelley's backroom.com. I like the Shelley's Cigar Fact of the Day. Maybe we can get that sponsor,
Starting point is 00:49:43 but I wouldn't go back and ask Bob to sponsor within a sponsor, you know, to ask Shelley's to sponsor within the sponsor. And I don't, maybe we can get actually a cigar maker, which Bob may be able to, help us with to sponsor the cigar fact of the day. I don't think we should do that, actually. Let's just leave the whole second. Sponsor by Shells.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Well, let's not try to squeeze a little to drop a milk out of the towel. Yeah, all right. Tell me how this is, I think this is going to be a major problem. And let me just tell you, they're not picking the best year to tell people to go find our games in terms of being the Nats, you know, being picked to be the second worst team in baseball after the Rockies. How the hell do I watch Nats games this year? Well, it's a disaster.
Starting point is 00:50:38 It's a disaster upon a disaster. You know, people are going to pine for the old Massen days. Yeah. You know, when people used to bitch about Massen and the Orioles own in the Nats rights, those are going to seem like the good old days. Okay, first of all, you can get them, you can get streaming. everybody, we've talked about that before. You can watch them streaming.
Starting point is 00:51:03 How? Through what app? Through what? MLB.com? MLB? Yes, I believe so. But if you want to watch them over the airwaves, regular airwaves, today they just announced. And the games, like in a couple, you know, at 2 o'clock,
Starting point is 00:51:24 there were 220. Today, they just announced how you can do that. According to what I'm reading on the internet, if you have Comcast Xfinity, you have to go to channel 1261. And the game will be on there? That's supposedly. So, but if you've got YouTube TV, you've got it, you've got to stream it. Yeah, yeah. But it's on 1261 on Comcast Xfinity, which is usually the channel in between the Spanish cooking show.
Starting point is 00:51:56 And it actually isn't. It actually isn't. Those 1,200s have a lot of the additional sports channels. But I'm curious, and I'm looking this up, and I can't find it. I mean, that tells you. Let me just continue. Verizon Fios, you can watch it on channel 579, direct TV on channel 641, Cox on channel 159. This is for free.
Starting point is 00:52:25 Yes. This is for watching it on... This is more than just today's opener. This is all season. Yes. Okay. This is all season. And then charter,
Starting point is 00:52:34 depending on your system, it's either on 425 or 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3. I don't even know what you just said. Charter. Charter. Charter is a cable company. Okay. Never heard of it.
Starting point is 00:52:45 Like Cox. What is the streaming cost? Why can't I even find the streaming cost here? If you've got YouTube TV, you're telling me to watch Nats games, I'm going to have to pay for streaming to get it streamed. Here it is. Here it is.
Starting point is 00:53:02 1999 a month. 1999 a month? Really? For this team? You know, they're barely worth that, to be honest with you. That's what I'm saying. I'll just, you know, I'll listen to Dave and Charlie if it's a big game. So you don't have cable anymore.
Starting point is 00:53:23 No. I finally got rid of cable. YouTube TV is just much easier. There's a problem, and I'm thinking about getting cable back, because there are certain things that are not included in YouTube TV, and there was that CBS Fox thing last year, but at that time I actually also had Xfinity at the same time. But it just was, you know, it was absurd to have two.
Starting point is 00:53:50 And so I like YouTube TV. All right. Well, look, it's going to be a terrible season, right? Just tell me real quickly. You've already said 100 plus losses this year. So you're going under the 64 or 65 and a half that I think the total is. What are the things to watch? Like, is Cade Cavali a story after all these injuries and after all of the promise? I mean, like, I'm interested to see what he does today and this year. they need an ace. They need a number one. He can be an ace.
Starting point is 00:54:29 He has that kind of stuff. Okay. So he will be interesting to watch. Jake Irvin made the starting rotation. He had a terrible year last year. He's a young pitcher. He had a good year of the year before. He has good stuff.
Starting point is 00:54:45 It'll be interesting to watch how he, you know, develops this year. James Wood had a great thing. first half. And then struck out a lot in the second half. Yeah. Did not have a great second half. So see how he progressed. If you want to watch Dylan Cruz progress, you'll have to go to Rochester to watch it because they voted him to trip away. Tommy, that's a big story. He's the number two pick in the draft a few years ago. Skeens is an absolute superstar. So what did they get wrong about him? Or is it just, I think I
Starting point is 00:55:17 asked you this the other day, but is it just way too early to have? To have him? have any real fear. It may be way too early, but these were the top two consensus draft picks. Okay? Yeah. It was schemes and Cruz. In either order, there were a lot of people at Pittsburgh that wanted them to pick Cruz, an everyday player, instead of a pitcher. And that would have been great for the Nats, if that had happened. You know, but we'll have to see. It's too early to tell on Dylan Cruz. But, but, but, but, I tell you what, Paul to Bonnie, the new general manager, he didn't draft crews. So it was a little bit easier for him to send him down.
Starting point is 00:56:01 And it would have been if it was his number two, number one's round. That's fair. But it doesn't change the overall. There's reason to be concerned when you're surefire number two and a guy that you thought along with Wood was going to be sort of the foundation of contending teams in the future. is starting the year in AAA based on performance. Yeah, I would agree.
Starting point is 00:56:29 You know, Khybert Ruiz is the catcher, but I don't think he's long for that position. He's been a disappointment for them. Yeah. Over the years, they traded for Seattle's, one of Seattle's top prospects in the offseason, a catcher named Harry Ford, who's starting the season in AAA.
Starting point is 00:56:49 I think Natch fans would love to see him up, you know, with the Major League Club at some point and see how he did. He was very highly touted, but he played... He would be behind Cal Raleigh in Seattle. So there really wasn't any place for him. So Nats got him in a trade this winter. But I'd like to see Harry Ford up with the Major E Club and see what he can do. And, you know, like a lot of the...
Starting point is 00:57:19 the trades that the Nats made, the Nats the trade for, you know, the prospects they got from McKenzie Gore, the prospects they got, Soto? You know, yes, I mean, not Soto, but the McKenzie Gore deal, and who did they trade in the off season?
Starting point is 00:57:40 During the season, I forget who they traded. But they've got two groups of new prospects, but they're not on the major league level yet. So the best the Nats have to offer, are still in the minor week system at this point. I guess the question that will come up, certainly as we approach July, will be who's going to get traded off this team for prospects? Will C.J. Abrams last the entire season?
Starting point is 00:58:07 I don't think so. Yeah. I don't think so. He'll be, you know why? Because next year, he'd make too much money for the learners. Right. When they can trade them and stick somebody in their chance. cheaper because that's the story.
Starting point is 00:58:23 We can talk about all the other stories, but the story is the cheap owners still own the team, and I don't care how supported Paul Tabani feels. They're not going to change the way they do business. They really, man, this town. Well, you know, we have an opening day. It doesn't, let me just tell you this from my perspective, and you know this about me.
Starting point is 00:58:48 I actually do like baseball. I loved baseball when I was younger. I yearned for the day that we would get a baseball team back here. I was very much alone among my friends. I did not become an Orioles fan during those 30 years, 30 plus years. And I went to a lot of Orioles games because it was a lot of fun to go to baseball games. And that was the only opportunity for us. And when we got the Nats back, you know, here in 2005, and they built the stadium.
Starting point is 00:59:24 And 2012 to 2019, you know, we're in the playoffs virtually every year, or certainly a contender. And that World Series, that was, I mean, we were building up some scar tissue from some of those painful playoff losses, like the very first year, the game five blown lead against the Cardinals. You know, the home losses in deciding games to the Cubs and to the Dodgers and then to win it. But, man, you've got ownership that just does not really understand or perhaps even care about winning. It's about, you know, whatever the budget says and how do we make money? Or how do we avoid losing money?
Starting point is 01:00:10 I don't know. How do we stop losing as much money as you're losing? Meanwhile, the stadium is still called National Park. The learners still haven't sold the naming rights, and they probably lost over the years over $100 million in revenue because of that. Why is that? Because they're difficult. They're difficult to deal with.
Starting point is 01:00:34 They have a number that's unrealistic, just like most things they do. You know this. You know how difficult they are to do business with. So, of course, that's why selling a team, which I think is going to happen after the labor thing is settled, it's going to be really massively difficult because they're going to have an outrageous number that no one's going to want to meet. Yeah. All right. Go Nats.
Starting point is 01:01:04 All right. Well, I mean, look, there are a couple of young players. James Wood is certainly worth watching. Absolutely. And Cade Cavali will see what he can. develop into in some of the other young players. Another good young player watching. Right.
Starting point is 01:01:20 Absolutely. All right. We'll finish up the show. I've got some smell test picks for tonight's Sweet 16. We'll do that after these words from a few of our sponsors. All right, Tommy. I'm going to get to my Sweet 16 smell test picks in a minute. But we have some uniform news to talk about.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Aren't you excited about uniform news? You love this. I am so excited. Are we getting uniforms for the show? No, not uniforms for the show, although maybe we should get uniforms for the show. But it really wouldn't work without it being streamed somewhere on YouTube. That might be in our future. But that's not what I'm talking about.
Starting point is 01:02:04 The team just tweeted out a few hours ago that new uniforms are coming April 15th. special delivery see you April 15th tax day new uniforms are coming so I have learned a little bit about what is on the way because as you know we took a little bit of a break in between the last segment and this segment because I was having a conversation with somebody that knows a bit about what's going on so
Starting point is 01:02:40 as you would probably guess I think most of you that have seen the tweet and the video, which shows, you know, in the background, pictures of Daryl Green wearing the championship era uniform. The net of it is indications are that the championship uniforms that were the alt uniforms this past season, they wore them against Seattle for the first time, then against Denver, and then against Dallas on Christmas Day. by the way, oh and three in those uniforms. But they were only five and nine in the other uniforms.
Starting point is 01:03:18 They also had the black alt uniform last year as well. But those championship era uniforms are very likely to become the permanent uniforms in 2026. Wow. Now, this was something... Now, that's good news, right? This is something that I shared with everybody all the way back, October of 2024 when, you know, a lot of stuff was going on relative to stories that were out there about the name and various things. And I said, the only thing I can tell you, I can't tell you anything about the name is there is an internal push to bring back the championship era uniforms.
Starting point is 01:04:02 Now, let me be clear as it relates to the helmet, the old logo is not going to be a part of it. Now, is it possible that the old logo down the road comes back somehow? I'm still hopeful that that can come back. That was never a source of controversy. No one ever accused that logo of being insensitive or anything negative. But I do think there's a chance that the spear could become a part of something with respect to the uniform. that was the part that I didn't get as much clarity on. But the clarity is the championship uniforms that were the alt uniforms last year will become permanent.
Starting point is 01:04:48 I think there was a question as to how quickly they could get that done. And it looks like this year. Now, I did ask the question, are they going to wear white at home? Which, by the way, is what they wore during the championship years under Gibbs. They became white at home. you know, burgundy or white on the road, depending on the opponent, what the opponents were wearing. I did not get any clarity on whether or not they will be white at home or burgundy at home, but there will be a championship era burgundy top uniform.
Starting point is 01:05:22 Because when they play teams on the road, if white is what they're going to wear at home, and look, teams wear all kinds of stuff now. Sometimes they wear white at home. Sometimes they wear dark at home. There's no more consistency to anything anymore with respect to not only uniforms, but I was watching totally, as an aside, I flipped on the Golden State Brooklyn game last night. I know you were into it. And Golden State was wearing uniforms that I didn't recognize and playing on a floor that I didn't recognize. Have you noticed how the floors in the NBA change now all the time? I used to like to turn on a game and know, oh, that's Boston. That's the parking. Oh, that's the garden. Oh, that's Detroit or whatever. It's not that way anymore. Anyway, well, you know, I mean, see, you have it better than me. When I turn on the NBA, I don't recognize the game, actually. Well, I know that. That's been part of your thing for a while. So, look, April 15th, I think we will learn that what we saw three times last year will become the primary. You know, when I say permanent, there will be alt uniforms.
Starting point is 01:06:30 I bet you that that black uniform is an alt uniform that they wear at home, but that the championship era uniforms that we saw three times last year will become the primary. I'm not sure whether or not they will wear white or burgundy at home. I did recommend, let me just say, I did recommend for what it was worth, just some advice based on understanding what those uniforms meant. and how they were worn that it should be white at home. That's what we wore during the Gibbs years. It was white at home.
Starting point is 01:07:05 Well, can I ask you a question? Sure. Why would it be so difficult not to just make it white at home? Is that like some kind of massive change, too? I don't know. I think what we've gotten in the NFL and just in sports in general is there's no more, you know, kind of consistency. You know, the Cowboys wear white at home, but then they'll wear something. strange on Thanksgiving Day. I know those are alt uniforms, but you'll see it throughout the
Starting point is 01:07:32 NFL. A lot of teams sometimes wear white at home, sometimes they wear dark at home. That's what we did. You know, we've done that in recent years with the, you know, with the expansion uniforms. I'm just glad to see the expansion uniforms. I think what we'll learn on the 15th, that they've been retired, hopefully. That was a part of the entire abomination. of February 2nd, 2022. And it does make, I think, a difference for some of us to tune into a game on Sunday afternoon and see a team that resembles the team that we've rooted for our whole lives, which we just have not had since 2022.
Starting point is 01:08:17 You know, we just haven't had that. Now, you know, for those of you that are going to get excited and say, this is the first step to bringing back Redskins, I'm telling you, people, that's. just not going to happen. That's not coming back. I still think that a change is better than no change and something like Washington football team with the uniforms they're going to bring back. And I would love the old helmet back as well. But I think at the very least, what we saw three times last year will become the predominant, you know, uniform. And we'll see what it looks like, you know, with the burgundy tops as well when they have to wear those. Obviously,
Starting point is 01:08:54 they'll have to wear those at, you know, whether it's at home or on the road. But, you know, those of us that remember what the championship uniforms look like won't have trouble, you know, figuring out what they will be when they introduce them. So, you know, it's good news. And I think it was expected news if you've been listening to this show for a year and a half or longer. This was always the thing that was easier to do. the old name is, I think, impossible.
Starting point is 01:09:25 I just don't think that's a starter. I think that's a non-starter, excuse me, for the league, and it's big corporate sponsors. And we'll see what the helmets look like, but I still expect the W to be a big part of that. And we'll see whether or not some sort of spear gets worked into, you know, the logo. I think that's it.
Starting point is 01:09:47 I'm looking at my notes now from my conversation. Okay. But yeah. Okay. But this is this, this, this is not ground shaking, right? No. It's just a rumble. It's a rumble.
Starting point is 01:09:59 Well, it's a rumble for people, it's more than a rumble for people who haven't heard it. I think if you've been listening to this show for, you know, going back to October of 2024, this has always been my expectation in what I reported way back in October of 2024. When I said, look, the name is still very much up in the end. air, but the one thing that, you know, I've learned will become a part of the future is the old championship era uniform. And so that wasn't something they used in 24, but they rolled it out alt-style three times last year. And here in 2026, it's going to become more permanent as the uniform. Hopefully we can say goodbye to what they've been wearing primarily for the last, what, three
Starting point is 01:10:48 seasons. 22, 23, 24 seasons. Are these uniforms healthier? Are they healthier? Like, can they keep them healthier? Yes, they're using a certain kind of wool that will keep their body warmer and looser, and I don't think we'll end up. There could be more cases of heat stroke, but I think we're going to keep the serious injuries to a minimum. All right.
Starting point is 01:11:16 That's it on that. All right. Two smell test picks tonight for the Sweet 16, and they are brought to you by, as always, My Bookie. MyBooky is boosting odds on both of my picks for tonight's game. So if you go to mybooky.orgie.ag, mybooky.com, either one, and you click on Sportsbook, then you scroll down and click on partner picks, you'll see that my two picks have boosted odds.
Starting point is 01:11:48 Instead of paying minus 110, you're going to be at plus 100 as of now. And that could change between now and game time. But the two smell test picks are, and just to update everybody, the smell test is 14 and 8 against the number in the NCAA tournament so far. The two smell test picks are Arizona laying 7, and a half against Arkansas and Illinois plus two and a half against Houston in what is a de facto road game for Illinois. They are anti-public sides. I think those were the two shocking lines for me when the lines came out for the Sweet 16 games. I thought Houston would be a bigger favorite,
Starting point is 01:12:39 and I thought Arkansas would be a shorter favorite. I'm giving you Arkansas up, of seven and a half. There are a lot of eights and a lot of eight and a halves out there, but I see it kind of a third, a third, a third. So whatever number you get at my bookie, even if it's not seven and a half, if it's eight, take the boosted odds at plus 100 so that you're not paying any Vig on a loss. And also remember, use my promo code, DC Reload, DCR, E, L-O-A-D to get a 50% cash. bonus when you make a deposit as a new customer or as an existing customer. Arkansas and Illinois tonight are the two, not our, excuse me, Arizona and Illinois.
Starting point is 01:13:28 I didn't say Arkansas before, right? I said Arizona before. No, you said Arizona. Okay. Arizona and Illinois are the plays. Arizona minus seven and a half and Illinois plus two and a half. That line's come down, man. It was three, three and a half all week long, but it's a two and a half right now. Again, click on Sportsbook, then scroll down, click on partner picks, and then you can get the boosted odds under the Kevin Sheehan show. They're up right now. I'm looking at them right now. All right, Tommy. Anything else? I got nothing else for you, boss, a lot of news here. You know, some news, we didn't know we'd have news. That happens sometimes when we're recording the
Starting point is 01:14:10 podcast. All right, go Nats today. I will talk. to you next Tuesday. Thanks. I'll be back tomorrow, everybody. See you, Tommy. See you, boss.
