Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it, but you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Sheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Two guests on the show today. Jay Gruden, next segment. We'll talk Washington, Cincinnati, get him to pick the game. We'll look back to the giant game from last week.
Starting point is 00:00:20 And we will talk NFL and get Jay's lock of the week. He hit on his lock of the week last week. He's one-and-one on that pick. Following Jay in the final segment, Tim Murray will come on with us. talk college football with Tim, get his best bets of the week. But we will also talk Shohei Otani with Tim. Tim's a big baseball guy too. So I'm going to save the Otani conversation for Tim in the final segment of the show.
Starting point is 00:00:50 The show's presenting sponsor, as always, is Windonation. Call them at 86690 Nation or head to Windonation.com if you need new windows. the smell test coming up in this first segment of the show today. So there was some news today. I think some of you have seen it already. You may not think it's a big news story. And I wouldn't put it, you know, like a massive story related to our football team. But Dan Gratziano, who is a longtime NFL reporter.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Actually, Gratziano covered the NFC East, covered the Giants for many years. but he's become one of the significant NFL reporter voices at ESPN. Well, he was on this morning the get-up show with Mike Greenberg. And he said the following, quote, The Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington commanders would all love to add a talented wide receiver this year. closed quote. He's talking really prior to the trade deadline, which is the end of October. So there were a couple of receivers names mentioned Devante Adams, Deontay Johnson.
Starting point is 00:02:12 I think they should be considering a wide receiver. I don't know if trade deadline's the right time because I would want them to be in contention. Like Devante Adams, you know, it's a contract situation too, so you're going to have to pay them. Deontay Johnson, the same thing. So, you know, you'll have opportunities in free agency and even potentially trades at the end of the year, and then you'll have another opportunity clearly in the draft, depending on where you pick.
Starting point is 00:02:42 But, you know, without starting another Terry conversation today, they need another talented wide receiver. You know, that's the quote. They would all love to add a talented wide receiver. Terry's talented. Doesn't mean that Terry isn't talented. Terry's talented too. They need another one.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And they need another one that's even more talented than Terry. And whether they get that by the trade deadline, whether they add that in free agency or via a trade in the offseason or they add that next year in the draft, it's going to be, unless something happens this year where Noah Brown steps up, Luke McCaffrey becomes the real deal, and he was open a lot. Remember, we talked about that the other day on Sunday, and I think Luke McCaffrey is going to get some results this year. But right now, as we sit here on September 20th, and this is pretty early, probably the earliest that we've ever identified needs for next year. Usually we start looking towards the draft about Halloween, a week or two after most years, because the season's pretty much over. Although that's probably an exaggeration. by Thanksgiving, we start to think about the draft. But let me just tell you right now what I think the three top needs, not necessarily in this order, will be,
Starting point is 00:04:03 although I think number one may be in the right order. Corner, pass rusher, wide receiver. Those are the three needs in 2025s offseason between free agency and the draft. Corner is almost a lock that they'll be looking at Corner. and they may be able to add that in free agency. They may be able to add that in the draft. We don't know where they're going to be drafting.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And by the way, long road between now and April in terms of the players that you think will be highly drafted. Things change so much. Pass rusher and wide receiver. I would say my order right now would be corner wide receiver pass rusher, but I don't want to give an order officially. So there. Those three positions are going to be positions of need. No doubt about it. How about last night, Aaron Rogers? I mean, I'll talk to Jay about this, but to me, Aaron Rogers looked like Aaron Rogers last night. I said after they lost the opener to San Francisco, I thought he looked great throwing the football.
Starting point is 00:05:12 They just couldn't stop the run and they couldn't get off the field defensively. I know it's New England, but New England beat Cincinnati, and they lost an overtime game to Seattle, so they had been competitive. The Jets' defense really stepped up. I love their running backs, not just Brees Hall. I was a big Braylin Allen fan coming out of Wisconsin this year. He got picked in the fourth round. They've got receivers clearly. Garrett Wilson is a star. And, you know, they've got Alan Lazard, they've got Mike Williams from the Chargers. Tyler Conklin stepped up with a big game. but last night the story was Aaron Rogers and his arm and his mobility. I mean, the extended throws outside the pocket, he ran a couple of times.
Starting point is 00:05:56 He was outstanding. Very few people throw the football like he does. If he stays healthy and the defense gets back to something close to what they were last year, the Jets to me are a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the AFC. Did you hear what Mel Kuyper said yesterday? He was on, I think, that get-up show with Mike Greenberg. And he's had it with cover two, you know, deep cover two safety play. And he went off.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Here's what he said. That's what I want to see brought back. Say, well, you can't do that, right? We got a five-yard rule with the quarterbacks, right? The Mel Blunt rule, right? Now with the push thing with Hertz, you've got to be a yard back now. So don't tell me you can't have. have those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage than they are.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I was in games where I'm thinking, hey, too high, they're out in outer space. I couldn't even find us. And they're playing with nine guys, right? Where are the other two? Oh, the other two? They're so dagon far back, and even though they're part of Dan play. I'm telling you, we got to change this thing. And we got to have, hey, you can warn them.
Starting point is 00:07:02 I don't afraid. They come up. Hey, guys, you've got to get up a little bit, right? You're too far back. Warned those safeties. But you've got to figure out, competition. Somebody, somebody, Dano. Somebody's got to figure out what that depth is.
Starting point is 00:07:13 But it's too far. back right now. The NFL is being ruined by these too high safety. Mel Kiper is one of my favorite television football analysts of all time. He really is. I love Mel Kiper. He's my go-to, even now, with all the options we have at draft time. I just think he's also a wonderful human being. I'm sure most of you have heard how great of a guy Mel is. That's not a great take for Mel. That was really like, almost, hey, we're nowhere near the draft. I'd like to get more air time. Let me give you something truly provocative. Because cover two ain't new. It's been around forever. I mean, the Vic Fangio in recent years, cover two has been ridiculous. You saw it the other night as Kirk Cousins move the
Starting point is 00:08:06 ball down the field. You know, I think most of you know what cover two is and there are lots of, I'm sure variations of cover two, but most of it is two safeties way back, splitting the field and half in terms of their responsibility. And by the way, what Mel said about going to games and seeing safeties lined up so far back, that's true. That happens a lot. But cover two's been around forever, forever. And teams have had lots of success against cover two. And look, here's one of the reasons this take is so bad. Not because it almost appeared as if he thought this was a new thing. And not because there's no chance.
Starting point is 00:08:46 They're going to create a rule here that you can't play that way, although maybe I shouldn't dismiss it so quickly. But because every rule change over the last decade plus has been to benefit the offense. And he wants to make it easier for the offense. And I don't even know if that would make it easier because teams can attack cover two. We've talked about this a lot. I think it is about quarterback play. It's about dual threat quarterback play, lots of running quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:09:19 It's about a lot of quarterbacks who have retired in recent years. Great quarterbacks like Brady, Breeze, Rathlisberger, Rivers. It's about offensive line play for sure. It may have something to do with the lack of preseason play. I didn't think that until recently, but Derek Carr and C.J. Stroud and Baker Mayfield all played more than a lot of other quarterbacks. The Chiefs play their starters a little bit more in preseason. So maybe there's something to that.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And by the way, I should have prefaced this with, this conversation is a conversation because touchdowns are way down, passing yardage way down in the first two weeks. Like way off. You got a lot of dual threat running quarterbacks, man. You got a lot of young quarterbacks playing. Aaron Rogers certainly still looks really good. That's for sure.
Starting point is 00:10:12 All right, let's get to the smell test to finish up this opening segment. Kevin looks where the John Q public is putting their cash and does the opposite. It's time for the smell test. The smell test is brought to you by, as always, my bookie. Go to mybookie.orgie.orgie.com. You should take it, man, even if you've got another place. Take that free house money to play with.
Starting point is 00:10:47 It's a fair place. Their numbers are fair. You get paid if you win. You're not going to overpay on a loss. They've got every kind of bet you want, including every prop bet on every game. MyBooky.ag, mybooky.com, promo code Kevin D.C. to potentially qualify for up to $1,000 in free money. 5-5-1 last week. Terrible on college. 5-1-1 in the NFL, O' and 4 on college picks. I've got 15 picks today, so buckle up here. Overall for the season, 15, 15, and 1. I like Nebraska tonight.
Starting point is 00:11:29 I'll buy the half point, get it down to 7. They're playing Illinois. Nebraska is actually one of those rare anti-public home favorites. Illinois is undefeated. Nebraska is undefeated. This is a primetime game tonight, two ranked teams. Illinois got a little bit lucky against Kansas. They barely held on for a 23 to 17 win. They got four turnovers in that game. I love Brett Beelma. This game, though, I think is one team that's just better than the other. and the public hasn't identified it yet. The public's, you know, unusually in this spot on the underdog. I'll take Nebraska minus the seven buying a half point.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Rice tomorrow is playing Army. They're getting a touchdown. Army's pretty good. Rice stinks. Public likes Army. I'll take Rice plus the seven. Temples plus seven at home against Utah State. Utah State played Utah pretty closely last week after getting blown out by USC.
Starting point is 00:12:28 They're coming east. It's an early game, kind of tired. Temple plus seven is the play. I hate giving out Florida because I think they stink, but they're not starting Graham Mertz this week at least. But they're favored by six over Mississippi State. The public doesn't believe they should be favored over anybody. Lots of sharp action on Florida, too. I'll take Florida away from home at Mississippi State laying six. I'm going to do something I did a couple of weeks ago, and that's take Michigan.
Starting point is 00:13:00 against a superior team at home in the big house. I did it against Texas, got burned. But I hit 16 against a 10. I split 8s all the time, and I double down on all 11s. So that's a system play, Michigan plus the 5 against USC. It'll be cool to see the Trojans in the big house. The biggest public play on Saturday is Tennessee laying 7 in Norman. It's kind of crazy.
Starting point is 00:13:27 I had somebody text to me that is in the know on these things. things saying their biggest need will be Oklahoma plus, but really Oklahoma outright because there's so much Tennessee Moneyline Action and Tennessee T's action. Give me Oklahoma plus the seven and the biggest game of the day. Colorado is a minus one and a half point favorite over Baylor. Public likes Baylor. I'll take Dion's fighting Colorado Boulder Buffalo's length. the minus one and a half. Purdue got beat 66 to 7 last week against Notre Dame. They're getting
Starting point is 00:14:06 three and a half at Oregon State. I'll take Purdue plus the three and a half. Let's go to Sunday where the Broncos look right, man. They were horrible last week. They've been horrible to start the season. Tampa, 2 and 0 start laying six and a half. I'll buy the half point and take the Broncos plus the seven. Feel the same way about the Giants right there, O and two. The Browns looked much better last week. I think this is going to be just a low-scoring game. I'll take the big underdog, the Giants, plus the seven. The Bears looked bad. Caleb Williams looked bad. It's not that Indy looked a lot better, but Indy's getting played by the public minus one against Chicago. I'll take the Bears plus the one. I think the biggest kind of anti-public side combined with
Starting point is 00:14:52 good sharp money is the Panthers with Andy Dalton plus six in Vegas after the Raiders beat the Ravens. And then the Falcons Sunday night are a huge anti-public side. Massive sharp money right now on Atlanta. That line opened at four and a half. It's down to three. Give me the Falcons and you know who plus three. I like two Monday night games. I like both underdogs. I like Jacksonville plus five at Buffalo and Washington as the biggest underdog in the board. Can it be three straight weeks that the biggest dog on the board wins outright. You know, last night was the first six and a half point favorite to cover this year. The underdogs plus six and a half or greater were eight and oh prior to the jets covering last night. I'll take the Jags and the commanders on Monday night. So recapping,
Starting point is 00:15:45 Nebraska minus seven, Rice plus seven, Temple plus seven, Florida minus six, Michigan plus five, Oklahoma plus seven, Colorado minus one and a half, Purdue plus three and a half. Those are the college plays. That first one is tonight. Broncos plus seven, Giants plus seven, Bears plus one, Panthers plus six, and Falcons plus three on Sunday. And I'll go Jags plus five and Washington plus eight on Monday night. Rate us and review us if you get a chance on Apple and Spotify and follow us on Apple and Spotify. We'll get your preview of the Monday night game in Cincinnati. But I want to start with last night. Did Aaron Rogers look like the old Aaron Rogers to you? I think you look great. Yeah, ball comes up.
Starting point is 00:22:20 out of his hand, but I was very impressed with his mobility. He had a couple good scrambles, getting out of traffic, creating plays off schedule. He looked as he looked as good as I've seen him, really, athletically, physically, mentally, he's sharp. He had a couple great run alerts that he, you know, he could have handed off where he throws him out, little bubble screens out for touchdowns at Lezard. So yeah, he's making good decision with the ball. He's accurate and he's athletic. I mean, I think the ball just comes off his hand differently than it does with almost any other quarterback except for maybe Mahomes. I agree. He's got
Starting point is 00:22:54 such a quick release, and it's such a pretty ball that he throws, and he throws all types of arm angles and touch, and he can throw with velocity. He's got every throw in his bag. Yeah, he's on to watch when he's on. Yeah. I read something this morning that was pretty amazing. The touchdown pass that he threw to Garrett Wilson last night was the first time in his career.
Starting point is 00:23:17 He's thrown a touchdown pass to a wide-receiver drafted in the first round. That's incredible. I've never heard of that one. Cobb was drafted in the second round, I guess. So was Devante Adams. So is Devante, yep. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:31 That's impressive. I mean... But those are two pretty good players that he had for a long time that weren't number one draft picks. I mean... Yeah. All right. I saw you tweet out something yesterday.
Starting point is 00:23:43 It was in response to something I talked about in the opening segment, which was the Mel Kuiper rant on outlawing cover two. And you just said maybe Mel should stick to the draft. So why is Mel so far off? Well, he said two high safeties. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:05 I don't know if you meant cover two or just too high safeties. I just said that you can play cover two a lot of different ways. You can play your corners as a deep half player and your safety can come down and play the middle of the field and your other safety can play the flat. A quarter and a nickel can play too high. So there's a lot of different ways to play cover two ways. two. But to outwall coverage is ridiculous. You've got to play cover two. In fact, I used to to love going against cover two. I like going against cover two better than any defense than I was
Starting point is 00:24:30 because I knew I could run the ball and there's a lot of holes in cover two that you can go attack. The reason coverage is, the reason passing is down is there's a lot of young quarterbacks playing with a very limited experience and some young receiving courses and some young offensive line groups that are struggling to protect. That's not going to change whether you take out cover two or not. You're still going to have those issues with quarterbacks that aren't throwing the ball very accurately, and offensive line that aren't blocking very good. In fact, you're going to have to throw the ball more, and it's going to be done to your game. That's interesting.
Starting point is 00:24:58 So you loved to see, you know, traditional cover two, two deep safeties. Vic Fangio cover two. Monty Kiff and Tampa, too, the old Tampa, too. We love that. Yeah. I mean, you know, if you can, if you have a team with a great front and four that can get home, like Monique and had at Tampa, and somebody seems to have with their four downlinemen or a great edge rusher like Miles Garrett or T.J. Watt.
Starting point is 00:25:23 And Cover 2 is a good option to have, obviously, because you know, you're protecting your corners and there's not a lot of space out there. And you're getting home with four guys. But if you don't have those rushers, you can get after Cover 2 in a big-time way. I mean, high-loan hook players. You can attack the middle of field. You can get the honeyhole shot. You can attack the corner, high-low the corner outside.
Starting point is 00:25:43 You know, it's a lot of good ways to attack Cover 2. And also run on the football is very good. So you gave some reasons. why, you know, passing touchdowns, passing yardage is down here in the first two weeks. And I agree with all those. I'd add that, you know, a lot of the great quarterbacks of the 2010s and even into the early 2020s are gone. Brady, Breeze, Rathlisberger, Rivers. There's been a loss of a lot of really good quarterbacks. And you mentioned O-Line play, and I wanted to ask you specifically why you think O-Line play has deteriorated.
Starting point is 00:26:20 around the NFL because I think most people believe that it has. I don't know, really. I just think, for whatever reason, just the draft last four or five years has not been very good for offensive line. There's been some very good offensive line that coming out of it, but as a whole, you know, usually you can get some guys in third, four, fifth, sixth round that can, you know, help their team out.
Starting point is 00:26:42 But that hasn't been the case. The depths aren't very good. There's been a lot of injuries to offensive line, and then the backups are not quite changed. capable as the starters, obviously, and they struggle quite a bit. And then you're playing, you know, new system sometimes and quarterbacks that aren't staying in the same spot. You're moving around like crazy.
Starting point is 00:27:02 The more athletic quarterback's been drafted. That means they're running around like crazy and scrambling them. It's just been more difficult, and they're not as accurate. The idea that college football is so different, now it's been this way for a long time now, but the spread offensive linemen are never in a three-point stance in a lot of places, especially the Big 12, and the splits are different. A lot of people have attributed that, just that they're not being developed for NFL-style football at the college level anymore.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Do you agree with that? Yeah, to an extent, yeah, but there's still some teams that run normal stuff. And really a lot of NFL teams have kind of gone to more of a college-type offense, spread them out, try to run inside zone, bubble screens on the outside, and things of that nature. Just, but when it comes down to it, the ability to run the ball powerfully between the tackles. Not a lot of people have that option. You know, if you want to learn outside zone, you've got to have more athletic alignment that can't protect quite as well. So it's a tough position to draft for.
Starting point is 00:28:05 You've got to just really draft to what your identity is going to be as an offensive coordinator, head coach. You want to be a big powerful team, then you draft bigger guys. You want to be more of a running team like the 49ers. And he's got to have more athletic guys. So it's just tough to find a combination of Lyman that can do both. If you can find Lyman or a tight end, they can both block and receive, it's very beneficial. But if you can't, you've got to really adapt to whatever system your players can do.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Would you agree, too, that you mentioned a lot of young quarterbacks? There are also a lot of dual-threat quarterbacks now, more than we've ever had before. And that's a factor, right? Oh, 100%. 100%. So, yeah, you guys look at Indianapolis, you look at Baltimore, you look at these teams that have the athletic quarterbacks, you know, they're going to run more zone reads and things of that nature. So passing will be down with those teams that always will be. Let's talk about that for a moment, because when that kind of football came into the league, you know, call it 2012 with RG3, with Russell Wilson, with Kaepernick, when Jim Harbaugh sort of adapted after Alex Smith got hurt,
Starting point is 00:29:13 Cam was doing a little bit of it the year before in 2011 as a rookie. It has been a big part of football ever since, but now it's become even a bigger part of the NFL game. And you're right. A lot of the college styles and concepts have been adopted by the NFL. You know, there hasn't been a true kind of run-first dual threat quarterback to get through the postseason and win a super. Super Bowl. The closest is actually
Starting point is 00:29:45 Kaepernick in 2012 when the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl and lost to the Ravens with Joe Flacco playing lights out during that postseason. Do you think it's possible that a Lamar Jackson-style offense, and I know it's much different with Monkin than it was with Greg
Starting point is 00:30:04 Roman, et cetera, but that a true dual-threat offense is sustainable through the postseason and, you know, good enough to bring home the Lombardi Trophy? Yeah, I do. I think you've got to have a lot of things go in your favor.
Starting point is 00:30:20 You've got to stay healthy, obviously, with that player, and you have to play a good defense, and you have to play with the lead. Because a lot of times these players with a dual-threat quarterbacks, when they get behind, they really have trouble coming back when they become one-dimensional. So as long as they play games and they stay ahead of the chains, and they stay within a touchdown of the game and they can continue to run their offense, then yes, but once they get behind, it's a major struggle for them. Really interesting point about Needy.
Starting point is 00:30:43 the lead. I think we've seen some of that with dual threat quarterbacks, especially in Baltimore in the postseason. But certainly you could front run your way to a title. That's possible. I wanted to share this story with you and ask you if you've had a similar experience or anything remotely similar to what Dan Campbell said yesterday, the head coach of the Detroit Lions. He is selling his suburban Detroit home to get more privacy. He said, quote, with the home that he's in now. He said, quote, there's plenty of space. It's on two acres. The home is beautiful. It's just that people figured out where we lived when we lost, closed, quote. Did you have problems with where you lived if you lost with fans deciding to stop by and express their views on what went wrong?
Starting point is 00:31:36 I never had that issue. We had a gated community, thank goodness, never had an issue with a fan. I'm angry fan. other than on the internet, rip at me in phones and radios and stuff like that. But never face combat, thank goodness. That's good. I mean, what about when you would go out? No, nothing really. No, everybody was pretty good. Fans were great around here for the most part, yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:01 You know, I didn't go out very often. I just stayed like in our club area and stuff like that. You know, I've said this about you, and I said this about Mike, and I said this about Ron. The three of you all at various points and times said, this is a really tough market, a really tough NFL market. It's a tough media market. The fans are demanding, et cetera. And I've always felt like it's not Charlotte.
Starting point is 00:32:30 It's not, you know, Denver. It's not Cincinnati where you were before you came here. But it's far from Philly, New York, or Boston. I don't think it's far from there. I think it's close. I just think that the media attention for Washington is pretty high. So if something goes wrong, a little something, it never gets swept on the rug. Anything, any type of adversity that you have will become a headline.
Starting point is 00:32:54 And that's the biggest issue. Somebody's going to pick up on it. They're going to pick on the worst characters in your locker room. They're going to get stories from them instead of going after the good guys, you know. So that's the only difference. Just with more media attention, and there's a lot more eyeballs on our front. football team. Like when I was at Jacksonville or Cincinnati, you know, there's some things that you got away with that you would never get away with in Washington. I think, you know, I'm not saying this
Starting point is 00:33:18 because you're on with me, but I think of all of the coaches, you're the one that sort of let it slide off your back much easier than some of the other coaches. I think you handled it sometimes with sense of humor, which is a good way to sort of diffuse it. But did it ever get to you? No, the only things that got to me a little bit were the in-house things. I felt like I could control by eliminating that player, and I couldn't do it. I had to stick with that player and those players in the locker room. That got to me, but as far as the media is concerned, I grew up in a football family. Obviously, my dad was a coached and went through a lot with my brother, him getting fired at Tampa,
Starting point is 00:33:56 the ups and downs that he had in his career, so I knew what the business was all about. I knew that you had to win or else you're going to get ripped. and that's just the way the business is. All right, back to the giant game. What did you think? I thought it was a good win. You know, I'm impressed with Jaden, obviously, seven drives, seven drives for points. Obviously, the red zone was a little discouraging, but for him to play, you know,
Starting point is 00:34:21 carry the ball as many times he did and not turn the ball over, made good decisions with the football, had a couple big time throws her late in the game to get the game-winning touchdown. Her field go, I mean. So I was impressed. You know, I still think the defense. is a long way to go. You know, if the league neighbors doesn't drop a little hitchh route by the sideline there, where we might be talking different about the game.
Starting point is 00:34:40 But I was impressed with the way they played and coming back after a loss. Now they have to get ready for tough Cincinnati team. That'll be a tough go because since he's 0-2 and they're dying for a win. But impressed with the progress he's made so far, he's going to continue to make some progress. I mean, he's a heck of a player. Defensively, what are you seeing? Yeah, I think the issue is we talked about you want to play, you want to protect your corners, you're going to rush forward,
Starting point is 00:35:02 and they're not getting much pressure with the four-man rush, and they're not being able to stop the run with light boxes right now. So now if you bring safeties down, you play single-high, and you want to stop the run, then your corners are in jeopardy. Their corners aren't good enough. Safetys aren't good enough. So they just have, you know, an issue. They've got to do a much better job with their four-man rushes
Starting point is 00:35:19 because they need to play coverage. They need to let the corners have some help with two deep safeties or quarter-quarter half or quarters or what have you. But when they do have to play known-man situations, they're going to struggle because I don't think they can come. ever good enough. You know, I remember the 2016 team. There were games in which you either didn't punt or maybe just punted once and you lost some of those games. We talked about this a little bit last week that the slow death, you know, the not being able to stop the other team is actually
Starting point is 00:35:47 more painful than struggling offensively. Did you go into some of those games and do you think maybe Dan Quinn's starting to think about going into some of these games using the offense as like the best defense. Does it change the way you game plan? Does it change your fourth down decision making? What do you remember about some of the teams that you coached that were pretty damn good offensively, but just were, you know, at times dreadful defensively?
Starting point is 00:36:20 Yeah, you're going to have to play with your gut, but you might be more aggressive on four some two or three at midsfield or whatever. But the way Washington played last week, you know, the first drive of the game was a 10-month-old. minute drive like 12 plays or something like that. That's perfect. Let's do that every time, but that's hard to do, hard to maintain that. But I think they only had seven possessions last week because they maintained the ball. They ran the ball.
Starting point is 00:36:43 Of course, they gave up some runs on defense. Singletary had 95 yards. So the running clock pretty much the whole time, they shortened the game, stayed close in the game, and were able to win it at the end. And I think that's their recipe for success moving forward is to possess the ball, run the ball, get Jaden, you know, some good play action shots every now and then, try to get Terry. more involved to try to get some chunk plays out of way. And then, you know, hope to goodness the other offense screws up and gets frustrated and turns
Starting point is 00:37:09 the ball over. So that's the other thing. They've got to create some turnovers on defense and they'll be fine. The turnover they got early in the third quarter was huge in that game. Yeah, it was a great punch out. I wanted to ask you, I don't think I've ever asked you this. What's the contingency plan for a kicker that gets hurt in the game? That's different than what happened last week.
Starting point is 00:37:29 I understand. Gano was hurt going into the game and they didn't have a contingency plan. But when you have a healthy kicker, how much are you prepared for a kicker that gets hurt in the game? You're not. There's really nothing you can do unless your punter can kick. Then you have to have a backup quarterback to be the holder. But some teams punters can kick an extra point, maybe a little 30-yard field goal or something like that. But you just have to go for it.
Starting point is 00:37:56 You know, there's no other choice. if you're in a red zone, you don't have a choice to have to go for it. And fortunately, Trusway could kick off, so that wasn't an issue, but no contingency, really. So you have no contingency for something that could easily cost you a game? Yeah, I mean, unless you, like, there's, who's the running back that was a kicker, kicked in one game? I can't remember. I think we had them here. But if you have somebody like, I think Trey Quinn could kick extra points, too. So if he was active, he could kick.
Starting point is 00:38:27 So we tried to have one, but there are some. games, he's your only option. I mean, you can't dress two kickers for God's sake. No, you can't do that, but I would imagine a lot of punters would at least be an option, no? Was stress away an option for you? Yeah, he was going to be an option for him. Like I said, he could kick off, but would you rather have a guy who's never really kicked a field goal, you're just going to go for two, right? That's a better option, go on for two or risk in that. but if you had a fourth and 15 at the 15-yard line, and you get a six-point lead,
Starting point is 00:39:00 then maybe you'll try Tresque as a field goal kicker, you know. But for the most part, you're going to choose to go for it in a critical situation rather than kick with a kicker who has it kicked. Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah, it does. I mean, like when they went for the fourth and four, when the score was tied 18-18,
Starting point is 00:39:19 if it had been fourth and 10 in that spot, I wonder if they would have sent the punter back out there because they sent him out there to kick the first extra point, and he missed it pretty badly. But if it were fourth and ten, like you said, a fourth and long situation, would that be a better odds possibility? I think it probably would be. I don't know. It depends on the kicker.
Starting point is 00:39:40 I thought it was crazy that the Giants knew that Gano was hurt the day before, and at the very least allowed him to kick off when the punter could have handled the kickoffs, because that was where he got hurt. was on the kickoff. Yeah, that's crazy to me. If I'm going into a game with a kicker that's questionable, he's not going to be my kicker. I'm going into a game with a kicker that's not on the injury report,
Starting point is 00:40:06 that's for sure. But he obviously kicked probably Saturday pregame and it must have been okay. And then the opening kickoff, he pulls his hamstring, which that's hard to do. I don't know for kicker. Weird. All right.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Of the four surprising two-and-o teams in the NFC, Minnesota, Tampa, New Orleans, and Seattle? Who do you think is for real and who do you think will come back to Earth at some point? Well, I think Minnesota's for real. They get good quarterback play. I think they really have a good defense in Minnesota, so that's going to keep them in games. And anytime you have a game breaker like Justin Jefferson and the running game is pretty good, they're going to be something to deal with.
Starting point is 00:40:42 They've got a really tough division. They've got Detroit and they got Green Bay, both good with Jordan Love coming back. I like New Orleans. They're playing decent defense, but, but they are really balanced in what they're going right now. I know they played Carolina, and they played a terrible Dallas defense so far. But Clint Kubiak's done a very good job on first and second down. They have had very minimal third down and long plays.
Starting point is 00:41:05 No one passing situations. They've been in a lead, and they've been gutting people. Albuquerr, looks like he's 20 years old. They're keeping teams in base defense, which teams aren't used to playing base defense or used to play nickel, and they're just pounding people in submission. So it'll be a good game this week for them, see if they're for real. but I like Minnesota because they have a great defense. Seattle, you know, Seattle's always right there.
Starting point is 00:41:26 I'm not a fan of Seattle. I think they're going to struggle when they play better teams in the future. So, yeah, I like what New Orleans done, but I really like Minnesota defense. All right. Desperation time, week three for Cincinnati, for Baltimore or not? Yeah, I think it is. You know, the bigger hole you dig yourself into, the harder it is to get out, obviously. And being 0-2 already now, you're thinking you've probably got to finish at least 10 and 5 in your last 15 games.
Starting point is 00:41:54 That's no easy pass with the division they're in on the schedule that they have. So you lose three in a row. Then you've got to finish 11 and 3. You know, so, yeah, or 114 in your last 14. It's very tough to win games. You've got to win the games at home. You've got to take advantage of those. This is probably an obvious question, but which of the two teams do you think is more likely to avoid Owen 3?
Starting point is 00:42:15 Or maybe you think both of them win this weekend. Baltimore in Cincinnati. I think Cincinnati plays well at home Monday night against Washington. I think it will be a tough trip for Washington. But, you know, I would play the point. I would take the point, so I think it would be a coaster game that people think. And I think Baltimore goes to Dallas and get to win as well. All right.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Give me your NFL lock of the week. NFL lock of the week is going to be surprising. But I'm taking the guy who just got bombarded to his house. I think Detroit's a better team. And I think Detroit goes to Arizona. I like playing better teams. I think overall Arizona's defense is not very good. And I think Detroit has their way offensively.
Starting point is 00:42:57 I think it'll be probably high scoring game. I think Kyler have a few plays. But in the long haul of a game, I think, Detroit scores 35, 40 points against Arizona. You love favorites. You had the Chargers last week. So you're one-in-one on this show with your NFL lock of the week. You had the Dolphins in Week 1, laying three-and-half.
Starting point is 00:43:17 cover. You had the Chargers last week. You've got the Lions Lang 3 at Arizona. Your final score prediction for Washington, Cincinnati? You like Washington to cover? Yeah, I think it'll be like 30 to 24 maybe, something like that. I think Cincinnati has scored 30s for sure. They're going to have trouble
Starting point is 00:43:35 stopping them. Although, you know, Zach and Moss didn't have very good day running a football last week. They got to figure out ways to get little pressure off Joe Burrow. And I don't know if T. Higgins was playing or not. I haven't seen that injury report. That's a big ad for Cincinnati if he plays. But I still think Cincinnati gets out of the rut and
Starting point is 00:43:53 plays better at home. All right. Good luck with your new driver. I hope it was worth it. Yeah, well, we'll see. I'll probably throw it in a lake. See ya, thanks. You can get that wherever you get your podcasts. We start
Starting point is 00:47:59 though with because Tim's a baseball guy. Tim's called baseball games a lot during his broadcasting career. And I wanted to save Otani for you. And I want to ask you, and I'm going to ask Tommy this, you know, when he's on with me on Tuesday. Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak, Ted Williams hitting 406 for a season, considered to be like kind of untouchables in terms of records. Is Otani's 50-50 in that same category? I think it is.
Starting point is 00:48:34 And, you know, I think Tommy is much more of the baseball historian than I am. And I try to do my best not to live in the moment and say, this is the greatest thing we've ever seen. But, you know, last night on Sports Center, I want to say Alex Rodriguez had the previous record for most stolen bases and a 50-plus home run. 24.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Yeah, 24. Yeah, 24. And this dude's got 51. And, you know, Bob Nightingale tweeted it on Thursday night, Kevin. He realistically could be 55-55 this year. I mean, this guy is just, it's hard to put into words what he is.
Starting point is 00:49:11 And, you know, honestly, Kevin, I think one of the best baseball moments we've had in the last two, three years was when Otani faced Mike Trout in the World Baseball Classic Championship in the ninth inning, and Otani struck him out. Like, this dude is otherworldly from a talent perspective. And, you know, Tim Kirchin, a friend of yours, you know, we all know him from the D.C. area. And I think he's one of the best baseball historians out there. he didn't go as far to say that he's the best player we've ever seen in the sense that he believes Willie Mays is the greatest player of all time. But what he did say was, and I'm paraphrasing, he's the most extraordinary talent we've ever seen. And I think that's hard to deny when you think about what he does from a pitching perspective and what he does at the plate, what he does on the base path.
Starting point is 00:50:03 I mean, 51 and 51. And then last night to go six for six, five extra base hits, three hundred, homers, 10 RBI, two stolen bases. Kevin, that's like if you put a high school kid down in the nine-year-old RBBA league. He's playing at Dogwood Park. I mean, this was a wonderful. Good one. Good one, Dogwood Park. You're very well done. Love the, yeah. Oh, love Dogwood Park. By the way, just as a kid, I know people like when we go down memory lane, when you got the 8 p.m. Dogwood Park game, oh, that was like, it was like you are playing at Yankee Stadium.
Starting point is 00:50:38 My kids, some of their first football games were at Dogwood Park, and it was a really good atmosphere because there was games on kind of multiple fields. Yeah, I mean, look, the game last night is almost a completely different subject, and it would be worthy of an entire segment on any given day. For those that don't know, I mean,
Starting point is 00:51:02 if you ever just go read box scores of your favorite team or looking for your favorite players. You've never seen a line like this ever. And the reason is one's never really existed. Otani was six for six. He had three home runs. He had 10 RBIs. He had five extra base hits.
Starting point is 00:51:25 Like, it's insane. He became the first player in Major League history with multiple home runs and multiple stolen. Oh, I forgot. He also had multiple. stolen bases. And he was the first player in Major League Baseball history with multiple home runs, multiple stolen bases, and at least five hits in the game, and first player ever with five extra base hits and 10 RBIs in the game. You talked about, so I was curious as to where, you know, people who love the sport are going to think about this record. Nobody had ever, you know, done 50-50
Starting point is 00:52:03 before the first ever. I did think to myself, like, what is it going to end? And you said that, I guess, Passon tweeted out that... Nightingale. Oh, it was Nightingale. Tweeted out, it could end up 5555. By the way, if it does, he'll also move up on the list of greatest percentage stolen bases of all time. He's third on that list right now, but the two guys in front of them are catchable. But what I was going to say is, is I guess he would be the one that could go and do it again. Like he did it this year. You know, a 56 game hitting streak is really, you know, in many cases there's some
Starting point is 00:52:46 randomness to it and there's some incredible luck involved in it. 406 for Ted Williams, you know, there's a lot of reasons people will give you that nobody's ever going to hit 400 again. But home runs and stolen bases, yes, I like, let me just mention one of the ones. another thing because you talked about the A-Rod season, and Willie Mays had one that was close to it. But of the 49 guys in the history of the game that have had 50 or more home runs, the average number of stolen bases, 7.4. And this guy's at 51. So I guess what I'm saying is it may be an unbreakable, but it probably shouldn't be perceived that way as long as he's still
Starting point is 00:53:31 in the game. Yeah, I think, I mean, I think you made the good point. I mean, it feels like the only person who could break it would be himself. And, you know, that certainly is possible. You know, look, think back to the one year Alfonso Soriano played for the nationals. He was unbelievable. 46 homers, 41 stolen bases. And Otani's got 51 and 51.
Starting point is 00:53:53 And, oh, by the way, you know, once again, to go back to where he will ultimately be from a talent perspective, Kevin, or just, you know, will we ever see something like this? He was fourth in the Cy Young two years ago. So this guy is about he went, his third MVP, and he was fourth in Cy Young voting two years ago. Oh, by the way, all year long, he's rehabbing, coming back from Tommy John's surgery, and the guy's did 51 home run.
Starting point is 00:54:23 Yeah, it's insane. It's crazy. You forget about the fact that, you know, if he didn't have, if he wasn't injured, we may be talking about one of the best pitchers in the game simultaneously. You know, I was talking on radio a little while ago with my producer Denton about this. So this is all well and good.
Starting point is 00:54:43 And, you know, I watched the Kirchen thing you did last night too. I watched him with Scott. And Willie Mays is his number one, number one all time. But he did kind of intimate that, you know, in a few years, he may be saying that about Otani after he's got a little bit more longevity. but here's the thing. In that sport, you know, not that it's totally like the NBA or like the quarterback position, but Barry Bonds wasn't very good in the postseason. Clayton Curshaw, who some people say is one of the top five pitchers of all time, he has struggled in the postseason. He did not make the postseason, right?
Starting point is 00:55:19 Correct me if I'm wrong with the Angels. I think this will be his first postseason experience. Like I'm not expecting him to be anything but spectacular, but, ultimately his legacy will come down to a certain extent to what he does. By the way, an era of a much expanded postseason. I mean, the World Baseball Classic is not Major League Baseball playoffs. I'm not trying to compare the two. But he was, if I remember correctly, very influential for Team Japan when they won the World Baseball Classic.
Starting point is 00:55:57 But yeah, I mean, that's the thing about the baseball postseason. is that, you know, it is such a crapshoot when it comes to a sample size for baseball players. And, you know, we saw it with the Nationals for a long time with, you know, the players that we expected to step up, didn't step up until 2019 rolled around. And Anthony Rendon and Steven Strasbourg and Juan Soto all stepped up. So, I mean, that's the crazy thing. I was talking about this this morning on my morning show in Milwaukee, Kevin, which was, you know, Shohei Otani and Mike Trout were on the same team, and they are arguably the two best players of this generation, and they never made the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:56:39 That's impossible to fathom in a sport like basketball. Imagine if you had, you know, LeBron and Steph Curry on the same team, they would make the playoffs and probably win championships, you know, but in baseball, it's just such a crapshoot. I mean, not to go down this wormhole, but, like, the Milwaukee Brewers traded away their basketball. best player, their best pitcher, I should say, before the season started, Corbyn Burns to the Baltimore Orioles. They lost their manager, Craig Counsel to the Cubs. They just won the division by double-digit games. Baseball just doesn't make sense from a standpoint of stars and all that. All that being said, when you've got a lineup of Otani, Mukhi Betts, and Freddie Freeman, that's a pretty scary-ass lineup to go face any team, you know?
Starting point is 00:57:26 Yeah, I mean, I think this postseason is seven. up to be one of the most anticipated from a casual sports fan standpoint in a long time. I mean, Judge Soto, Yankees, all of the stars, you know, led by Bryce Harper and his clutchness in the postseason in Philadelphia. And then, of course, every Otani game is going to be high profile in the postseason. It should be great. All right. Let's shift gears to college football.
Starting point is 00:57:58 Before we get to your best bets, and I've already done my smell test for the day, I did it in the opening segment of the show. This is a much better week of college football than last week was. Give me your top three games in order. I think number one has to be Oklahoma, Tennessee. How real is Tennessee, that atmosphere at Oklahoma. I think the point that's been made all week, Kevin's a good one, where Oklahoma doesn't get these games all that often. right, because their biggest game in the Big 12 every year was a neutral site game. A hundred percent right.
Starting point is 00:58:33 So now you're getting college game data campus. You're getting a top six team in the country in Tennessee. And, you know, this is to bring it to gambling, you know, this is what's so fascinating about this point spread, Kevin, which is over the summer, Oklahoma was a four and a half point favorite. last week Oklahoma was a two-point underdog, and now they're a touchdown underdog. So the betting market is trying to really adapt on the fly with these teams and the influx of talent that they're getting from the portal and what is hitting and what is not. So, you know, the odds makers are trying to figure out on the fly as well. And to be honest, so far this year, the betting public has been doing pretty well.
Starting point is 00:59:20 A lot of these home dogs have not been covering. and we'll see this weekend, but I think number one for me, without a doubt, is going to be Norman, Oklahoma. And this is why Oklahoma join the SEC. I mean, you get a ton of money, but out with Baylor and Iowa State
Starting point is 00:59:36 and in with Tennessee, man, a primetime game on ABC. And think about all the ties that you have in this game. Josh Heifle won a national championship as a quarterback Oklahoma, was their offensive coordinator, and Bob Stoops fired him in 12. 2014 to Brinkin Lincoln Riley.
Starting point is 00:59:54 Brent Venables was the defensive coordinator for the national championship team that Josh Pfeel was the quarterback of. They were on the same staff together, the ties between these two teams and the storylines for Saturday night. Without a doubt, this is the best game of the weekend. Number two for me is, look, if you're a college football romantic, man, we get USDA and Michigan at the big house. Like, sign me up for that.
Starting point is 01:00:20 Now, Michigan has their concerns. The quarterback position, Alex Orgy now takes over for Davis Warren, who, you know, great story, overcame cancer, former walk-on, but just wasn't getting a done to quarterback position. And now you bring in Alex Orgy who, let's be honest, they wanted Alex Orgy to be the starter. He did not win the job. And then on the flip side, Kevin, I think you and I have talked about it. USC maybe made the best coaching hire of the entire offseason, and bringing in the Anton Lynn, Anthony Lynn's son to be their defensive coordinator.
Starting point is 01:00:53 He's been fantastic. And they're coming off a by. But another situation, Kevin, where over the summer, Michigan was a double-digit favorite against USC, and now they're catching four and a half five against the Trojans here. I don't know how this ultimately play out. We'll get to my best here shortly, but I kind of feel like this is going to be a bit of a lower-scoring game. So, yeah, those would be the two games that interest me, the most. And then Oklahoma State and Utah. Like, is Cam Rising going to play, you know, as a home dog?
Starting point is 01:01:25 Mike Gundy has been unbelievable. I think he's 8 and 1 against his spread as a home dog at his time at Oklahoma State. Like, he has thrived in this role, and we're playing this game again. Last year, it was every week it felt like, is Cam Rising going to play? Different situation. He was coming up the ACL tear a year ago, Kevin, but the point spread started at Oklahoma State 2, went to Utah too, and now it's back Oklahoma State being a small favor of me. No one knows whether or not Cam Rising is going to play. All right. Give me your best bets of the weekend in college football. All right, a lot of these games have moved, so, you know, obviously, you know, check the numbers out there. So personally, I took Oklahoma over a touchdown. Sevens are still out there.
Starting point is 01:02:13 This is a hold on to your nose, hold on to your butt special. I think you, me, Van Pelt, everybody that plays kind of a contrarian style, is going to look for Oklahoma. Already gave them out. My guest, yeah, my guest will be Kevin every Saturday morning at 1130 on my tailgate show. I have on an odds maker, and I always ask who is the biggest side the public is taking. My guess is going to be Tennessee. They're going to lay this number because I think Tennessee is unstoppable.
Starting point is 01:02:40 Maybe they are, Kevin. It very well could be possible. I took a little under a Michigan USC. You're missing out on the good number. I didn't even get the 45, but I took some under 44.5, 44. And then the last one for me, I need to get double digits again in order to kind of give it out here on the show. But I like Navy.
Starting point is 01:02:59 It's a really tricky spot for Memphis this week coming off of a massive win on the road at Florida State. Navy's coming off a buy. We don't really know what Navy is yet. They've got a new offensive coordinator and Drew Cronick, who came in as the former head coach of Mercer running a triple option, but with a couple wrinkles here and there, they've only played, you know, an FCS team in Bucknell,
Starting point is 01:03:22 and then they played Temple, who might as well be an FCS team this year. But I took some Navy. Got to get that north of 10. And then lastly, Kevin, because you and I like the late-night games, give me BYU plus a touchdown against Kansas State. The Cougars at home, great home field advantage. They've been a little more impressive than anticipated this year,
Starting point is 01:03:42 and Kansas State, even though it was on Friday, Kevin, coming off with a big win over Arizona. They have to go to Provo, late-night, elevation. That's always kind of a tricky place to play. Certainly give the coaching advantage to Chris Clyman and the cast, but I think it's also a little bit of a sandwich spot where you're coming off the Arizona win. Next week, you host Oklahoma State,
Starting point is 01:04:02 and now you've got to go on the road to a great environment in Provo. I'll take the full touchdown with the Cougars late night there on the S-TN. I think you made a really, really good point when you said these odds makers early in the season are adjusting and really trying to figure it out because the portal's hard to figure out. It's not hard to figure out which teams did well based on player rankings. What's hard to figure out is how they fit in to that program and how long it takes to adapt to what they have and what they're in when they get there. interesting. Do you have an NFL play that you love Sunday? No, I don't have a play that I love. Obviously, dogs were barking up until Thursday night, right? I think dogs of north of six were 8-0 against the spread up until last night, yep. Yeah, so dogs have been barking there.
Starting point is 01:05:02 You know. Big dogs, yeah. Yeah, big dogs and barking. So, no, nothing really for me. I thought about Tennessee again. I've been burned on Tennessee the first two weeks, but I kind of like that spot a little bit. Baltimore a bit against Dallas,
Starting point is 01:05:17 but nothing for me. Anything I jump out to you from your smell test? Yeah, I mean, I gave out, you know, like last week was really, really good in the NFL. Like Denver looks totally right, getting less than a touchdown. I bought it to, you know, bought the half point at Tampa.
Starting point is 01:05:34 I think that the Giants look right, Chicago, Carolina definitely looks right at Vegas. And then I like Atlanta. I like them Monday night, and that number is short. And then I like both Monday night dogs. I like Washington and Jacksonville on Monday night. We'll see. Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, I think the books will probably need Washington to win outright. For those who play Caesars, that's a very teasable number from seven and a half down to one and a half. Yes, it is. By the way, I had somebody text to me,
Starting point is 01:06:12 and I mentioned this when I did the smell test, that the biggest need Saturday is Oklahoma, but it will really be for Oklahoma to win the game outright, just to crush Money Line Tennessee plays and, of course, two-team teasers involving Tennessee where they just have to win the game. Thanks for doing this, as always. hope you're well. Tim again, catch him on TV tomorrow on Masson 2, hosting the Vizen College Football
Starting point is 01:06:42 Tailgate Show, and then it shifts at 11 a.m. to Masson. Follow Tim on Twitter like I do at 1 Tim Murray. All right, brother. I'll talk to you later. Good luck this weekend. See you, Kevin. We are done for the day back on Monday where we will recap the NFL and college football weekend, but more importantly, preview and pick Washington and Cesar. Cincinnati. Have a good weekend. Enjoy it.
