Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheehan Show. Here's Kevin. Tommy's here. I am here. The show's presenting sponsor is always.
Starting point is 00:00:14 Window Nation 86690 Nation. Window Nation.com. If you do Windows, Tommy. We've got this from D to open up the show. D's responding to a segment that I did yesterday, answering an email from somewhere. who linked me to a fantasy football site that gives you injury history on each player that might get drafted in a fantasy football draft and then projects injuries, future injuries.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I had never seen a site that had projected injuries, predicted injuries, but draft sharks was that site. And so Dee writes, Kevin, I cringed listening to the show yesterday, during the part about Jaden Daniels injury history. You clearly aren't a fantasy football dude. Injury protection is a big part, injury protection. I think he meant to say injury prediction. Injury prediction is a big part of pre-draft prep.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Daniels is an injury risk no matter where you take him, and draft sharks is a good source on that. D, you're out of your effing mind, dude. you're right, I'm not a fantasy football guy, although I've been in fantasy football leagues pretty much the last 30 years of my life, even though I treat fantasy football like it's, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:44 having a cold beer next to the heroin that I inject into my veins on Sundays with the number of wagers that I place, real wagers. So I know a little bit about fantasy football. It's true, I have not really prepped much over the years for my fantasy football draft, I've auto-picked two or three times in drafts over the years, Tommy,
Starting point is 00:02:08 and I ended up winning the league, which tells you a little bit about fantasy football, you know, puck-lock. But, yeah, I did not know about this site. I'm sorry, Dee, was not, you know, I'm not into a lot of fantasy football sites. I'm just not. I'm into a lot of betting sites, you know, actual wagering on games sites, but I don't read and don't do a lot of prep on fantasy football. But you've got to be kidding me, right?
Starting point is 00:02:42 That injury prediction, sure, you can take, you know, injury history guys that have serious injury histories and say, yeah, the problem with him is, you know, availability. You know, availability is better than ability. But to suggest that draft sharks is a good source on Jaden Daniels having, you know, availability, you know, availability is a good source on Jaden Daniels, having Tommy a 71% chance of getting injured next year. His projection of games missed is 2.20, and yet he's listed as a five on the durability chart, five being most durable, and they said about him that he's able to play well through minor injuries, which are the only injuries he's had until this past season. And even this past season, it's not like he had major injuries.
Starting point is 00:03:31 injuries. I'm sorry you cringed during that segment. I am not a fantasy football guy. There's no doubt about it. And I would not necessarily take draft sharks injury predictions very seriously. You know, what's funny about this, do you think if these guys who run this website, this Fantasy League, whatever, the fantasy website really could do this. Don't you think they'd be working for an NFL team? Well, they'd be more than that. They'd be worth tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars
Starting point is 00:04:15 using that information to their personal benefit. Now that they can, you know, use it legally. Yes. Yeah, I don't. Ridiculous. Can you? I don't fight fantasy football. I never did.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I played fantasy baseball for a few years early back in the mid-90s, but I don't do that anymore. But like you said, my son, who doesn't care about football, you know, participates in a work fantasy football league just to socialize and has won it twice. Yeah. Yeah. Last year, I think, was the first year I've not been in a fantasy football league, and I did not miss it at all. Now, I think they're, you know, because so many people are into it, and we do, you know, for a living, provide sports content. And look, that's why I have Paul Chartian on the show with me every single Thursday for the last 10 years. He's great at fantasy football conversation.
Starting point is 00:05:16 We usually end up talking about movies, television shows, and music more than fantasy football. By the way, when you mentioned that you were, you used to play fantasy football, I don't know, why I thought of this, although I probably thought of it. Not football. I know, baseball. That's what I meant. Baseball. Like, I can just picture Tommy with a bunch of guys smoking cigars, drinking beers, doing their baseball fantasy draft. Did you do that? Because, of course, you had to. It wasn't online the last time you did it.
Starting point is 00:05:49 No, basically, we would have a meeting at somebody's house. Right. And it was based on paper research. Paper, periodical research. Yeah. Absolutely. Did you ever see the movie knocked up with... Yes, I have. You've seen that movie with Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Seth Rogan.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Yes. What's her name? Where is it? Catherine Hegel. You know, there's this scene where Leslie Mann thinks that her husband, Paul Rudd, and his character is cheating on her. And she, you know, sneaks over to where she thinks he's cheating on him. And she busts into this house with Jonah Hill and Catherine Hegel because Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, excuse me, has knocked up Catherine Heigel.
Starting point is 00:06:39 And, you know, they're going to have the baby. And it's the three of them snooping around this house. And then they bust in and it's Paul Rudd in the middle of his fantasy baseball draft. You know? And she's like, what is this? He's like, it's fantasy baseball. And he goes, got Matsui. Remember when he said, he said, I got Matsui.
Starting point is 00:07:06 That's great. And then he's got to follow her out of there. And somebody, you know, one of the guys in the group says, you know, don't let your, you know, V, you know, I forget what the line is. It's something basically calling him a girl, you know, calling him a woman. And Seth Rogen just starts cracking up. He's like, that was funny. Seth Roker was basically high the entire movie. Here's what you can do over fantasy football.
Starting point is 00:07:34 What? Google person shot over fantasy football, okay? Uh-huh. In 2018, a Florida man was charged with second-degree murder after a fatal shooting on New Year's Day 2018, which police say stemmed from a heated argument over a fantasy football league. Yeah. In a separate 2024 case, a Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty to federal charges of making threats of mass shootings and bombings
Starting point is 00:08:04 against a member of his fantasy football league. He sent fake tips to law enforcement in the U.S. and Norway after disputes with a league member. Yeah. Talk about insanity. Yeah. Well, maybe draft sharks will be right about J.D. chances of getting, you know, a minor injury this year. You know what?
Starting point is 00:08:30 I would say that there's a better than 50-50 chance he gets a minor injury this year. He had a minor injury with a rib injury in 2024. You know, I would guess that it's probably better than 50-50 on every single football player in the NFL that they'll end up with at least one injury. Minor or major? I would say so. Yeah. So I got a question for you, you know, how is your weekend?
Starting point is 00:08:57 I wanted to ask you for me. My weekend was, you know what, Cooney was in town. I had this wedding to go to. I think I told you about this wedding, right? Did I tell you about this wedding? Yeah, I think so. That I had to be the efficient of. I told you about that.
Starting point is 00:09:13 That's right. Yeah. You decided over the wedding. I did. I guess that's a word, a verb. Yes, it is. Preside over the wedding. I just thought I was the official.
Starting point is 00:09:22 I didn't know you had a religious background. Well, I didn't until about two weeks. ago when I went online and was online ordained as a minister in about 45 seconds. I mean, that's how long it took legitimately. But then I had to, I don't know, I had to sign some documents and they had to be notarized. And I, well, Nick, Nick Turner, who was a producer for Cooley and I, along with Greg. Greg was the main producer. And Nick was one of Chris's best.
Starting point is 00:09:57 friends. He's, you know, when Chris was playing, he's really good friends, super close with John Allen, who played, obviously for the Skins, plays now for the Bengals. He was at the wedding. He's such a nice guy, by the way, just a first-rate guy. And Nick got married over the weekend, and about a year ago, he asked me if I would officiate the wedding, you know, in May of 26. Well, when somebody asks you to do anything a year plus out in advance, you just say yes, don't you? Yeah. Yeah. And then all of a sudden, about a month ago, he goes, remember, oh, my God, that's coming up now?
Starting point is 00:10:35 So I wasn't, I was honored that he and his lovely bride, Hannah, asked me to do it. But I wasn't necessarily, like, super excited about it. I had never done it before, so I didn't know what it entailed. I would think you got to speak before the congregation, the people who are coming to the wedding. That was not the, that was not necessarily the concern. The concern was, what do I do? Like, do I have to be like a minister? Am I going to have to give some sort of sermon?
Starting point is 00:11:11 Am I, you know, what do I do or am I just, you know, reading the vows to be repeated back to me? I didn't know what it entailed. And then his fiance, his now wife, Hannah, sent me sort of a rundown. They actually came over for dinner about two weeks ago, and she gave me a rundown for the entire thing. And I was like, wow, this is a lot. I mean, I didn't say that. I'm telling you that. And then I was like, you know, there was a part, there was a part where you're supposed to do a few minutes on the couple.
Starting point is 00:11:49 and I didn't know her that well. And I've known Nick now for 10 years, 10 or 11 years. So I just asked for some notes. And then I just kind of, you know, it went well. Although I should say, oh, my God, maybe I shouldn't say this. I don't think his mother was thrilled with me. Why? Well, it's not a religious thing or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:12:15 It's that I kind of took the operas. to, you know, roast my guy Nick a little bit during the sermon part. It was kind of a combination of, you know, making fun of him to a certain degree. Because everybody kind of agreed that the match was an unlikely one. She's super smart and interesting and very cultured. And he's, you know, a football coach in high school who watches a lot of football and talks about a lot of football, kind of like us. He's a bit of a Neanderthal.
Starting point is 00:12:54 And I just, I kind of made fun of that to a certain degree and maybe said that his head looks like a football, which it does, and maybe a couple of other jabs here and there. But I wrapped it around some very nice things because Nick, and you remember Nick to a certain degree. And all of Nick's friends at the wedding said this. John Allen came up to me afterwards. He said, you nailed it on Nick in terms of the kind of. person he is. He's just super
Starting point is 00:13:21 kind and loyal. Like he would do anything for people that are important to him in his life. And Cooley was his best man. Cooley delivered the best man speech. It was really good. But I'm not sure the mother was thrilled. And the reason I know that is Cooley came up to me after the wedding and said, before I went up to do the best man speech, his mother stopped me and said, please, whatever you do, don't roast him like Kevin did. But Nick didn't have a problem with it, and Hannah didn't have a problem with it. And again,
Starting point is 00:14:01 it was a mix of, you know, there were some jabs in there, but it was all wrapped around what a great guy he is. And then I talked about her and how she's, and I really do like her and didn't know her that well until recently. And, you know, it's one of those opposites attract marriages. I'm in one of those. My wife couldn't give a shit about sports. The next time she listens to this podcast will be the first time. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 00:14:33 I know. You're the same thing. But then... Well, I'm glad there were no other incidents other than you insulting the groom. Well, it was not... I'm making it out to be more of an issue. I just think that it was, it was actually fun to do. I had a good time doing it.
Starting point is 00:14:54 The wedding, the rehearsal dinner was spectacular the night before. The wedding was in a really interesting venue down off Georgia Avenue in D.C. And it was nice. It was really nice. Oh, and asking me about my weekend, because I'll ask you about yours here in a moment, on Sunday night Harley Window Nation Harley
Starting point is 00:15:15 celebrated with a couple hundred people including yours truly coolly came with me Kara came with us his 50th birthday down at the Pearl Street warehouse on the wharf and he had a
Starting point is 00:15:30 rock band Silver Sun pickups they were pretty popular in the 2000s and you know early 2010s he had them play by the way We were trying to guess this. To get a band that had some success, Silver Sun Pickups had some success as an alt rock band, you know, similar to Smashing Pumpkins, a couple of other bands, not the success of the Smashing Pumpkins, obviously.
Starting point is 00:15:56 But what do you think it cost to have a group like that play a private event? Now, they're touring right now, and they were in Baltimore last night. so this was convenient for them. But what do you think it costs? I think I know. I don't actually, I think I have a good guess that'll be pretty close, but I'm curious as to what your first guess would be. $10,000?
Starting point is 00:16:23 Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. A lot more than that. Really? Yeah. Yeah. It's definitely six figures, is my guess. Oh, my God. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:37 There's no way. a band like this would come and play for $10,000 a private... I never heard of them. I know. Well, you don't follow... You're not a music person from after 1980. So they're popular enough where I'm sure they do 10, 15 of these a year, maybe, 10 of them a year. But I'm...
Starting point is 00:17:01 I could be wrong. I know it's not 10,000. I could be wrong. I guessed between 100 and 150. K What's the name of the band? Silver Sun Pickups. And so maybe it's 50, maybe it's 75.
Starting point is 00:17:21 I would guess there's no chance it's less than 50K. Somebody that's listening to this show right now probably knows. Actually, I have a friend of mine that books music events for private things. I can call him and find out. who would be the band or the singer that for a birthday or a big celebration for you you'd love to have play privately for you and you know a hundred of your closest friends
Starting point is 00:17:50 well that would be you know Peter Wolfe and what's left of the Jay Giles band yeah you love Jay Giles yep yeah according to AI booking the Silver Sun pickups for a private performance is in the range for 75,000 to 150,000. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:14 So you were right. Yeah, that's, that's, that was my guess. We, there was several of us, you know, that we're trying to guess it. And a couple of people said what you said, and I said, no, it's not that. No, they're not, this band's not coming to play for, for that. But, um, I wasn't sure because I think, you know, I've read before like the Rolling Stones, it's like a million bucks, you know, for them to do, and they, and they usually don't even do it. But if they were to do it, but Google AI, you know, ask AI about what the Rolling Stones
Starting point is 00:18:48 would cost for a private event. That's got, it's got to be, that's got to be seven figures plus, right? Every bit of it. I would think so. Yes. Have you gotten the answer yet? No, I haven't gotten an answer yet. I didn't think you'd be asking me to, I thought I already.
Starting point is 00:19:08 came through. You did come through. You did come through. All right. Yeah. All right. I don't know. Yeah. Well, this, whatever. It's, it's, it's, I would, if you end up with a couple. They give you, they give you a pretty lame answer. From three million to 11 billion. Okay. If, if you, if you end up with just a couple of hits and maybe an album or two that, you know, does well, you could do this for the rest of, your lives. I mean, they're on tour, so they're obviously touring, but the private events,
Starting point is 00:19:46 I would bet these things pay, like, better than one show pays for them in terms of the net take. Yeah. I don't know much about the business, though. It's kind of interesting. All right. How was your weekend? It was pretty uneventful. I watched the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Very exciting. Yes, it was. The horse, one, came out of nowhere. I mean, from the back, golden tempo,
Starting point is 00:20:21 from the back of the pack all the way to the front on the home stretch. That was very exciting. A first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. I didn't get a sniff. My horses didn't come close, basically. but and the ratings were up. I saw that. I think, yeah, I think, well, you know, it's hard to really judge rating numbers anymore
Starting point is 00:20:49 because if they're using the formula that includes streaming, nobody really knows what the hell is going on. But the average Nielsen numbers were the highest since they started tracking it in 1988. Yeah. Yeah. So that was good. And then since I was watching NBC, I figured, you know, all the Knicks and the 76ers are on for game seven. I figured it's a game. 76ers in Celtics.
Starting point is 00:21:18 76ers in Celtics. Yeah. Okay. So I hung around to watch that. And I figured, well, you know, seventh game, this is playoff. This is the exciting stuff. And, uh, well, does, save it. We were going to do this in the next segment.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Just save it. basically what I did. Okay. That's what you did. Well, sit around. The derby, I did not see it because that was right during the, it was during the wedding on Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:21:46 But my guy at Eddie C, who comes on every year to, you know, to give us his picks for these triple crown events. On Friday show, he said, I really like Golden Tempo to come from the back and make a late charge.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Yeah. Really? Yeah. Eddie C's a bit of a legend. around, you know, areas of Montgomery County and Saratoga and South Florida. Very mysterious person. I know him. A few others do.
Starting point is 00:22:16 But yeah, he was touting Golden Tempo. It ultimately was not his pick, but he had Golden Tempo in several exactus. I wanted to mention one thing football related other than Jaden Daniels' injury fantasy football talk. And I'll get to it with Tommy right after. these words from a few of our sponsors. It's really important that we get as many ratings and reviews as possible, especially really good ratings like five-star ratings. Also, follow the podcast. Just hit the plus button or the follow. button. So I wanted to get to something that I saw early this morning. It's one of Tommy's favorite things. It's ESPN's updated post-draft NFL power rankings for 2026. I was curious as to what it would
Starting point is 00:27:24 have because I read from several of them last week, I think on the radio show, they all came out after the draft. And I mean, Washington's like anywhere from like 23 to 26. you know, in the power rankings. Like, nobody outside of this town thinks they're going to be very good. And look, their over under is reflective of a team that's not supposed to be very good. It's seven and a half. That's where it is at my bookie right now, although it's very expensive to bet the over,
Starting point is 00:27:55 which, you know, tells you that if the number ends up moving, it'll move up. But I was just curious to see what the ESPN and, NFL, you know, nation guys would have. You know, it's basically a vote among all those people. Traditionally, there's been a big difference between what local, including us, think of the team and what national people think of the team. And more often than not, my experience has been the national people have been right.
Starting point is 00:28:27 And we've all got a little bit too excited. But that's from, you know, it's kind of warped because that includes the Snyder era. And there haven't been enough years of the Harris era to really develop a pattern yet of ownership. So, but generally, I remember many times having this conversation, you know, before the season started. You know, we think they're going to be good. You know, everyone else thinks they're going to stink. We're thinking what's wrong with these people and then they stink. Yeah, let me just say, I couldn't give two craps about these power rankings,
Starting point is 00:29:04 even though we, you know, inject them into the conversation. Usually it's for the purposes of seeing what sort of outside this market thinks about the team. And personally, if I were outside this market thinking about Washington, I guess if I weren't paying attention, I would say they had a major step back year last year, five and 12, Jaden Daniels isn't as good as we thought he was in 2024. I'm just saying if I hadn't been paying attention and I'm outside this market. And then I would say, and I mean, what do they have on offense other than Daniels? They didn't add a receiver, you know, a big time receiver to the mix. They waited until the third round to add a receiver. And I would say, Philly's better, Dallas is better, and the giants are, you know, on the rise to a certain degree.
Starting point is 00:29:56 That's what I would probably think if I wasn't paying attention. If I had been paying attention, I would look at Washington and say they are definitely one of the teams that has a chance to go from no playoffs to playoffs. Why? Because the team that played in 2024 didn't play last year. If you're paying attention, that team wasn't on the field in 2025. And that's why they went five and 12. But if the team in 2024 is on the field. Okay. Let me stop you there for sure.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Because you have continuously said this, and it occurred to me, if that's the case, and why did they fire both their courts? We've gone through this a million times. Well, Joe Witt Jr. is not that hard. He wasn't very good in 2024. The defense sucked in 2024. They should have considered that change last off season. I tell you what, I bet you Joe Witt is probably sitting at home thinking,
Starting point is 00:30:58 Jesus, if I had this roster on the defense that I ran, I would have done a lot better. Well, that's fair. That is 100% fair. And the defense last year did suffer major injuries as well. I mean, Dorrance Armstrong was a really good player for them before tearing his ACL in week seven. But they were not, they were disorganized defensively. I know that, but they may have been disorganized because they weren't very talented. Well, that's part of it.
Starting point is 00:31:30 My point is, I don't think you can keep saying, you know, 2025 didn't really, wasn't a reflection when the team fired both of their coordinators. Of course I can say that. The two are completely mutually, they're exclusive of one another. I don't think it is. That's like telling a coach, well, we're going to fire you. But, you know, it's not because of the results. No, it's not. Joe Witt Jr.'s results absolutely dictated that a change be made there.
Starting point is 00:32:04 What about the offensive coordinator? The offensive coordinator, I think it was debatable as to them turning him loose, but they wanted to go in a different direction in terms of the style of the offense, and they didn't want David Blow to leave the building. He'd be an offensive coordinator in Detroit right now, and if not Detroit, three or four other places. And they think he is a rising star. they would sacrifice the guy that created one of the best offenses in a league in 2024. They did.
Starting point is 00:32:33 And not only did they do it, they did it with the quarterback's preference being to keep Kingsbury. Yes. So, yes, look, I've sat here and said, this is, you know, this isn't, so this isn't a move that's high risk for Dan Quinn, because the entire building agrees with him, okay? the Joe Whit Jr. move firing him was no risk. The hiring of Durante Jones when guys that were more proven were out there like Jonathan Gannon and, you know, Dinard Wilson and Patrick Graham, some of those guys were out there. That's the one that I think he better get right. Because the blower, the building agreed. I mean, this was this was the organization saying, we want to play for, football and offense a little bit different than we played in 2024 when they last played all together for a significant number of games. And Blow's the guy to do that, and if we don't do it now, we're going to lose Blow. Let me speak for the building
Starting point is 00:33:41 here for a minute. Yeah. You know, because I know, I know people. I know the building. Yep. Okay. The building, I've spent, I know buildings, okay? I'm familiar with buildings. You got that? Yeah. Okay. The building doesn't give a shit if he was warranted, if they suck again this year. That's fine. That's projecting forward.
Starting point is 00:34:09 If it doesn't work out, they'll be pissed. But what I am telling you is that everybody agreed we cannot let David Blow leave the building. Will they look for a scapegoat on Blow if he's not any good? and will it be Dan Quinn? I'm not going to debate you on that. You're probably right, if that's what you're saying. I'm just telling you that Blow from a very early period of time after he arrived, they're like, this guy's going to be the real deal
Starting point is 00:34:43 as an OC and he's an eventual head coach. And the rest of the league feels that way too. I just think that constant talking about, you know, injuries in 2025, and you're right, I think really ignores what could be a possible issue within the structure of the coaching staff. Okay, but don't you think those two conversations are just separate from one another? They can both be true? That the reason that they sucked so bad last year is that they didn't have their very best
Starting point is 00:35:20 players playing much football last year? Because of course that's true. I think they're tied together. Well, then why when they had all of their football players in 2024, did they win 12 games in two road playoff games? Even if they were having maybe some second thoughts about Joe Witt Jr., maybe even Love Cliff, and this works, and it's working for us, but maybe it's not the long-term offense we want to see Jaden in? they could have felt that way, even with all the success. They lost 12 games last year more than anything else because they were hurt. It happens all the time in sports.
Starting point is 00:36:06 Happens all the time. When you don't have your best players, you usually don't win a lot of games, especially when your best player is your quarterback and your quarterback plays only four complete football games. You see, this is why they need those guys who run that fantasy. football site to predict injuries. But to your point, I know that you have thought that there was this massive disconnect between how could they fire, and more so Kingsbury, because Joe Witt, Jr. was fireable after 2024.
Starting point is 00:36:42 I mean, if they had wanted to move on from him, because the defense was not very good. And then the defense this year was injured, but it was also completely disorganized. at times. I mean, the secondary in the early portion of the season, they were running into each other. So it was not a well-coached defense. Cliff Kingsbury did a pretty good job, even with all of the backup players in 2025. They had a middle-of-the-road offensive football team. So I understand why you could wonder, how do you fire the offensive coordinator when he essentially out-coached what he had. You know, he overachieved. And it's really, to me, it's not that hard. They want to move to more of a Shanahan style or a Ben Johnson style of offense. Quinn believes in that. That's not Kingsbury's
Starting point is 00:37:37 offense. And they have a guy in the building that they believe can coordinate and play call that type of offense. And they didn't want him to leave. I understand all that. Okay. I just think that every time that you cite injuries for the sole reason that they went belly up last year, I think you're ignoring the possibility that they may have a coaching problem as well. Okay. Let me just say this. I'm not ignoring anything else. I'm just putting it in its proper place. And for me, when I hear outside the, you know, this town people when they talk about Washington, the way I initially described it, oh, they had a step back season. Jaden Daniels really took a step back. What are you talking about? How, how little could you be paying attention
Starting point is 00:38:36 to the Washington football team to actually have the opinion that Jaden Daniels regressed or took a major step back in 2025. You could not have been paying attention to the team. He played start to finish in four football games. And by the way, in a couple of them, he was outstanding. So Terry McCorn missed half the season. Wide receiver one, running back one. Austin Echler missed essentially the entire season.
Starting point is 00:39:13 It was one after another. all the receivers they were putting out on the field, Robbie Chosen and Chris Moore and the whole thing. It was a disaster. You can't win that way. And Mariotto was good for a backup quarterback and is good for a backup quarterback. But they didn't have their best players who played in 2024 in every game. They didn't have those players play in even half of the games in 2025. So yes, I'm going to harp on that as to why they went five and 12. Now, I will say defensively, I don't know how much better they would have been had they been healthy. I think it was a bad defense even healthy.
Starting point is 00:40:00 And Dorrance Armstrong was good and Dietrich Wise was probably going to be good, but it wasn't enough. It wasn't anywhere near enough. So I think ultimately with the schedule they faced last year, some of the teams they faced, That defense would have had them in a big bind anyway. And even if Jaden had played 17 and Terry had played 17 and Eckler had played 17 and the offensive line, Sam Cosmy had played 17, if they had all those players play, I don't think it was going to be a repeat of 2024 with that defense. It would have been like an eight or a nine win team max last year. And they would have been more like Cincinnati was when Burrow led the league in passing in 2020. 24 and they went 9 and 8 and missed the playoffs because their defense was so bad.
Starting point is 00:40:50 That's where to me, and I did this on yesterday's show, Tommy, that kind of my top three question marks going into next year, number one is still the defense for me. It's Durante Jones. It's all of these new players. Because if it's not a lot better, it's going to be hard for them to be a playoff contender. It's got to be a lot better than it was last year. should be on paper, you know, certainly better, but how much better. All right.
Starting point is 00:41:19 I want to hear about your NBA experience. Can we get to that? Yeah. All right. We'll do that after these words from a few of our sponsors. I'll be honest. Starting point is 00:46:14 So, after the Derby on Saturday night, you stuck around and watched Game 7 76 or Celtics. And it sounds like you were not impressed. Well, again, I mean, I don't understand the culture of basketball anymore. Okay. I know a little bit about the game. don't have the depth of knowledge that you do, okay, because you're much more connected to the game in the current fashion. You know the game.
Starting point is 00:46:44 This is a game you know. You don't need to qualify, you know, or undersell your knowledge of the game. Go ahead. You know, when you're shooting three-point shots that, you know, look like they're being shot at the playground in a... in a, you know, a contest, one of those shooting contests, in a horse contest.
Starting point is 00:47:13 And why don't you try something else? Why? Why? I mean, you know, I know there's a quote from Mazur, who I think is an absolute idiot. I don't care how many NBA titles he won. Where basically he says, you know, I go without strength.
Starting point is 00:47:33 That's how I'm going to coach. without strength. Well, it wasn't their strength that night. And I'm thinking to myself, and this is kind of simple, but if Joel M.B. was such a problem, why not go at him offensively?
Starting point is 00:47:50 Why not attack the lane and go at him and try to get him in foul trouble and get him the hell out of there? Because what you were doing wasn't working. Okay, it just wasn't working. And it hadn't worked the whole series, but they You know, I mean, even though they were up three to one, when they started going downhill, they kept on doing it, you know, even though they couldn't, they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Why not, you know, change your mode to, okay, we're going to attack the rim. We're going to drive to the basket, and we're going to force Joel M.B. to come after us. Why not that? I couldn't agree with you more. You're 100% right. 100% right. I said this yesterday about the game 7. It's just so frustrating to watch teams like the Celtics, the Celtics in particular. I mean, they shot 129 three-point shots in their last three losses and made 36 of them. I mean, where's plan B? If you're coaching
Starting point is 00:48:58 a team that loves to shoot threes, and this is how you think you need to play, recognize that the postseason's different. It's a lot different than the regular season. Let me give you a stat real quickly, Tommy. Of the 11 top attempt three-point shooting teams in the regular season, only one is left in the post-season, Cleveland. The top 11 three-point attempt teams during the regular season, only one is still playing.
Starting point is 00:49:35 And that's the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics are a live by the three, die by the three. And they've lived by it a lot more than they've died by. I know that. But you've got to have a plan B. They were not shooting the three well in this series. The first game they lost, I think they shot 50.
Starting point is 00:49:56 It was game two at home. I'm going to go back. I think it was 50 attempts. It was something 13 of 50 in game two. How do you not at some point say, you know, we're going to try something else? And to your point about game seven, you absolutely, this guy, Embedde is always, he always looks like he's on the verge of, I think he's a great talent. And I think he's a really good player. But he's fragile.
Starting point is 00:50:27 He's fragile. And you, now, they did not have Jason Tatum. You know that in game seven. That's a rather large loss. Okay. But I totally agree with you. I said this during the series at one point. I'm like, as a head coach, you've got to have a plan B.
Starting point is 00:50:47 You know, what do they always say about playoffs in Best of Sevens? Adjustments. Adjustments. Adjustments. No, Boston kept on shooting 49 in game 7, 41 in game 6, 39 in game 5. I mean, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:51:03 They were 13 of 49 in the 7th game, and they deserved to lose. Totally deserved it. Now, that said, Jason Tatum, wasn't in the game. No. His absence was missed to some extent. and when they, when
Starting point is 00:51:23 courted, what I read, Jason Tatum explained why he couldn't play in Game 7. Quote, the staff, the medical team, they just kind of assessed everything that was going on. And I was in the window of return to play protocol, and there were just certain rules and a plan that ultimately that we had to stick by.
Starting point is 00:51:46 Well, I'm guessing there's no Willis Reed in Jason Tatum. Well, there was last night in the second. game and I'll get to him in a moment. But I totally agree with you again. I mean, are you kidding me? Are you... The same seven, because the tightness in the back of your knee?
Starting point is 00:52:01 You've got to be... There's no way. No way my best player doesn't play in that game. If he's what I think he isn't... Look, I'm a big Jason Tatum fan. I think he is a great player. And obviously he was missed in game seven. knee discomfort
Starting point is 00:52:21 you're out there what do you need we'll shoot it up we'll do whatever we need to do but you're playing absolutely this is game seven stupid and here's the remarkable thing
Starting point is 00:52:34 and what part of all the continuous remarkable thing keep in mind you do you do know that he was had a torn Achilles last year in the post season and he came back a month and he came back a month ago and he came back quick
Starting point is 00:52:46 and it was very impressive That's the way he came back. Right. I'm familiar with all that. I'm reading the athletic stories, you know, the post game or the day after the athletic stories. And I'm telling you, this is where I knew. I don't understand the culturally because no one's taken with the Tzuid task. I mean, the Celtics are talking as if they had this great season, and they're very happy with the outcome.
Starting point is 00:53:14 And now they're going to have go home and enjoy themselves and have dreams. of the wonderful season they had, and there's nobody in any of the post-game stories in the athletic, which has become basically the mouth organ of the NBA these days, taking these people to task. If you read the stories that came out of Boston, I didn't read them. Besides Jaylon Brown bitching about the officiates. He's a great player, though, Tommy. He's a warrior. I know. I hated what he said about Embed being a flopper, even though he's right. You don't say that after you lose game seven and lose a three one one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:53 But you go back and you read the post, like the day after coverage in the athletic of the Celtics, and I swear, you would have think they just finished the seventh game of summer camp. Yeah. So that's my thing on the NBA. So I watched last night's game one of the Knicks and the Sixers. and that was a waste of time. The next look pretty good, and the Sixers look totally outmatched.
Starting point is 00:54:25 Well, you know, you know this about this time of year. When a team has that emotional win that Philadelphia had in Boston, in game seven, you know, completing a comeback of three games to one down. Yes. Last night happens a lot in the NBA. You know, it was kind of predictable. Now, the Knicks have won their last two games by 51 and 39 points. Did you see the lead that they had against Atlanta at halftime in the closeout game last Thursday?
Starting point is 00:55:02 I mean, they actually, they scored 83 in the first half. It should have been 93. They should have had a 60 point lead at halftime. But the Knicks are rolling right now, and I have to give them some credit here, because I have not, and I've talked about, not enjoyed, I have not enjoyed watching the Knicks play basketball the last few years in the postseason. I understand that Jalen Brunson is a great shot maker. He really is.
Starting point is 00:55:29 He is. It's so much ISO and so much too man. And watching him dribble 20 seconds of the clock with everybody standing around and then trying to create something, I hate that style of basketball. But what I've noticed from the Knicks in the last couple of, of games is there's a lot more movement off the ball. There's a lot more people touching the basketball. And it's still Brunson and it's still Towns. And by the way, Carl Anthony Towns is a really good passing big man. He always has been. But last night, he was exceptional. And from that high post, Philadelphia was a tired
Starting point is 00:56:08 team. You could tell game two is not going to be that way. And I still think this has a chance to be a series. But Tommy, the second game last night, which you did not watch, you would have gotten what you, you know, you would have gotten not Willis Reed, but you would have gotten, first of all, a start to finish game that I think was the best of the postseason so far. You had a performance for the ages defensively by Victor Wenbanyama. He had 12 blocked shots, 12 an NBA postseason record with 12 blocks. shots, and Anthony Edwards, who was hurt in the Denver series, hyper-extended knee, and a deep bone bruise. I read that he was going to be out for a couple weeks. He said, Nat, I'm in tonight.
Starting point is 00:57:01 You guys figure out what you need to do, but I'm playing. The opposite of what you got in Boston in a game seven. This was a game one. They brought him off the bench. He played 25 minutes. He had 18 points in 25 minutes. in the fourth quarter. He's a war.
Starting point is 00:57:18 This dude is one of my favorites in the league. Now, I don't think he's as great a player as, like, I think he's a top 10 player, but I don't think he's got a chance to be the best player in the league. But in terms of toughness, this is what he's always been about. And this team is so reminiscent of, say, like the pistons of the 80s and early 90s. This team, I didn't want to. them to beat Denver. I was rooting for Yokic, and I talked a lot about that series, and I don't think Yokic looks good for not getting by Minnesota. And I saw that Ryan Rissillo, my guy who used to
Starting point is 00:57:56 host with Scott said, you know, hope the people that bashed Yokic, you know, are choking on that now or something to that effect. Well, Yokic in game six against Minnesota, Anthony Edwards didn't play in that game. So there was a little bit different, a scenario for Denver to advance, or to at get to a game seven. By the way, I bet you Anthony Edwards had there been a game seven in the Denver series over the weekend would have played. But Minnesota is one of those teams that they're tough, they're super physical, they're not good defensively, they are great defensively. They may have the best wing defender in the NBA, not just this year, but in a long time in Jaden McDaniels. Their wing defenders in general are just nasty. And they get in people. I mean,
Starting point is 00:58:50 and they have, they have definitely a chip on their shoulder. I mean, they're running their mouths. This is pistons from the 80s and 90s, and they are taking teams completely out of their stuff defensively. People laughed at that Rudy Gobert, you know, trade a few years ago. That dude is a major presence at the rim. And that allows the wings and the perimeter defense to take chances because you've got a rim protector behind you. I just love this team. I think they're well coached.
Starting point is 00:59:27 I think they are gritty. Everything about them says this is going to be a shocker here. I'll tell you what. If San Antonio doesn't win tomorrow night in game two, that series is over. It's over. Minnesota's got an unbelievable home court advantage, and they're not losing the series if they take the first two in San Antonio. I'm a big Timberwolves fan right now, and let's not forget, they've been to the Western Conference finals the last two years. They're the team with playoff experience, not San Antonio. San Antonio is the newbie. And Wembenyama went 0 for 8. It would have driven you nuts last night.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Now he is a good three-point shooter. I know he is. And he was 0 for 8, and that killed him, but he was also so worn down. Minnesota, every time a shot got blocked by Wembeyanam, and it seemed like it was every other possession. And by the way, Tommy, they're dramatic blocks. Like he smacks him off the glass, or he smacks him into the second row, or he smacks him back to half court. Well, Minnesota just kept coming. They just kept coming.
Starting point is 01:00:39 They didn't care. They scored 52 of their 104 points. That's half their points. In the paint, you would have loved watching Minnesota last night. Sounds like it. That team, and OKC to a certain degree, is similar because they're so tough defensively. You know, everybody was expecting Wembeeniameta, maybe, you know, that he's not going to have to wait. Well, it was welcome to the postseason last night for him.
Starting point is 01:01:09 He had 12 blocks, but he looked exhausted, exhausted. He must have fallen down on the ground last night like a baby giraffe, like six times. He's a lot of, he's a lot of leg. He's got long legs. Yeah. I like him, though. I do too. And he's very mature.
Starting point is 01:01:31 Oh, very mature. Very well-spoken and very smart. Totally agree. Totally agree. A lot of respect for the game, too. They got their hands full, though, because this Minnesota team, this is a nasty team, and it's talented. And if, you know, if Anthony adds, if the Ant Man was back last night, not even close to 100%, if he's getting healthier and we'll have to see how he came out of last night's game, but I think Minnesota can win this series. and I know everybody was kind of hoping to see first San Antonio Denver,
Starting point is 01:02:05 and I'm talking about NBA fans, and then San Antonio Oklahoma City. I think we're going to see a rematch of Minnesota, Oklahoma City from last year. I didn't think that before last night. I mean, Anthony Edwards was hurt. He wasn't supposed to play for another week or another two or three games. You know, DeSumo's still out. DiVincenzo's lost.
Starting point is 01:02:27 This team really bad, tough. You know the Miami teams a couple years ago with Jimmy Butler that were just so tough defensively and just way overachieved and got to the NBA finals? That's, this is that style of team, except I think they're deeper and better and more talented. The other two series, they get underway tonight. Cavs, Pistons, game one in the east, and then Lakers, Oklahoma City game one in the West. The Lakers are massive underdogs in the series. And in game one tonight, Tommy, you rarely see a point spread this big in the second round of the NBA playoffs, but Oklahoma City is a 16 point favorite tonight at MyBooky. If you want to bet the NBA playoffs or the
Starting point is 01:03:20 NHL playoffs or anything else, go to mybooky.ag or mybooky.com and use my promo code, DC reload. DC, R-E-L-O-A-D to get a 50% cash bonus when you make a deposit either as a first-time customer or as a returning customer. All right, we've got more show to go. We'll get to it after these words from a few of our sponsors. All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelley's. Well, Shelly's backroom at 1331 F-3 Northwest is the place to watch NBA playoffs. I wanted eight high-definition TVs in their comfortable chairs all around the facility. And while you're doing that, let's say you're not up for dinner,
Starting point is 01:04:14 but you just want some appetizers to go along with your, you know, with a great draft beer you've got and the great cigar you're smoking. Shelly's has a remarkable, remarkable list of appetizers available, you know. basically a first-class selection. And I know this because, you know, they're going to be the host of my event, cigars and curveballs on Monday night, May 18th, and for a $100 ticket donation, which you can buy online at D.C.Graise.com. You get three cigars.
Starting point is 01:04:50 You get to participate in the auction, the live auction of memorabilia, but you also get some appetizers from Shelly. Yeah. Okay? And I don't know exactly what appetizers they'll be, but I do know traditionally year after year they have their campfire wings available in the appetizers that are for, you know, patrons of the event. They're well-seasoned and marinated jumbo chicken wings with choice of Shelley's honey mustard, boot cheese, or ranch dressing. I mean, Shelly just has a remarkable list of. appetizers. They've got spice shrimp. They've got Tex-Mex egg rolls. They've got meatballs and marinerra.
Starting point is 01:05:38 One of my favorite. You got chicken cassidia stuffed poppers. They got chicken and, they got chips and salsa fresca. They've got a sampler. They've got sliders. All this. You can find out more by going to shelley's backroom.com. Real quickly before you get to your column. So, On Sunday night, there was a game seven in the NHL playoffs between Montreal and Tampa Bay. The game was in Tampa. Montreal won the game, two to one. In the game, Tommy, they had nine shots on goal. Nine.
Starting point is 01:06:21 Tampa had 29 shots on goal. I mean, if there's ever a sport, where the lesser team wins more often than any other sport. I'm not saying they win more often than not. But there's no sport like hockey, none, where you can be absolutely throttled start to finish and yet win the game. Listen to this from the game recap. Tampa Bay's tough defense held the Canadians without a shot.
Starting point is 01:07:00 on goal for nearly 27 minutes from the first period into the third period. They did not register a shot on goal in the second period. Through two periods of play in a seventh and deciding game, Montreal had just four shots on goal, but they scored on one of them. Apparently both goals were kind of lucky on lucky bounces or lucky. deflections, of course they were, but nine total shots and they went 27 minutes from first period to third period without shooting a shot on goal. And what do you always say is the key? You got to get some action in front of the net. What is it the whole say? Traffic around the net. Traffic around the net.
Starting point is 01:07:51 They may have had traffic around the net, but the puck wasn't anywhere near the net. That sport, man, I think it's exciting to watch this time of year. but you have, you could play great and lose. It's crazy. The other team didn't play well. The other team played great, and the team that didn't play well won. All right. What did you write about?
Starting point is 01:08:19 Well, I wrote about, you know, in Boston about a week ago, they had basically a mass firing of everybody on the Red Sox, the manager, Alex Cora, and pretty much, much his entire coaching staff, including Jason Veritech, a franchise icon, although he was actually given another job in the organization reportedly. And I suggested that the Boston President of Baseball Ops, Craig Breslo, you know, he, like Paul to Bonnie used to work for Breslo, the National President of Baseball ops. And Breslo was set to name to Boll. He promoted to Boney in Boston.
Starting point is 01:09:00 to the assistant general manager, and then he was going to hire him as the general manager in Boston this season. But then, Tobani left and took the job as the president of baseball ops in Washington.
Starting point is 01:09:14 So I suggest that Breslow was looking at what his old friend was doing in Washington with basically the new age, you know, high-tech analytics operation that the nationals are running. And Breslo said, you know, maybe it was a little bit of jealousy.
Starting point is 01:09:33 That's what I want to do. I wanted to do what my buddy's doing down there. So, I mean, and, you know, here's what happened. According to CBS Sports, the emphasis on the Bresla was metrics, roster, flexibility, depth, and matchups, which is basically, you know, the mantra of what they're doing in Washington. And I compared the two because in one, you know, Washington, Tobani,
Starting point is 01:10:02 that's basically a clean slate to do whatever he's wanted to do. You know, because it doesn't cost any money. Right.
Starting point is 01:10:09 At this stage. We talked about, yes. Right. At some point, they might progress to that before right now. I mean,
Starting point is 01:10:18 the learners are probably related with this guy because, you know, what he's doing, you know, all the, all the high tech programs,
Starting point is 01:10:25 all the equipment, all the meetings, you know, all the various, like strength and conditioning coaches at every level. It's not really costing them that much money. And you could argue they're having some success. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:40 I mean, what Tobani has been doing pretty much. He hired a manager with no major league experience, and I think Blake Baterrez done a pretty good job so far, you know, even though they have a losing record. They do have a losing record, but they're three games under 500, and they're one of the highest scoring teams in baseball offensively. I would say that their first 35-ish games have been unexpected in terms of the results. Yes.
Starting point is 01:11:09 They're overachieving based on what the expectations were. I think they are. You would know more than I. No, I mean, what's happened in Washington is what I think they want to do in Boston. And here's the common denominator. Alex Corr, and this is quote from the column, Alex Corr's biggest sin was he had a dreaded E, tattooed on his forehead, experience. Say for a few organizations, experience is a curse in today's game.
Starting point is 01:11:41 If there was a war going on in baseball management over the past decade between veteran baseball people and the young numbers geeks, well, the geeks have won, and they're not taken prisoners. if your mind is burdened by knowledge, it's a problem for the young front office executives who now run many of the teams in baseball. They want a clean plate to follow their directives. And this is not just the nationals,
Starting point is 01:12:10 this is pretty much what's going on throughout the game. And I'm not criticizing it, but it's a dramatic change that's happened. And I understand part of the reason is because for years, you know, the veteran based, the old school baseball people ignored. Some of these younger numbers guys didn't really pay attention to them. Well, now those guys are in charge,
Starting point is 01:12:36 and they don't want to hear what the old school guys have to say anymore. I mean, I had a coach tell me this winter that the worst thing you can have is experience because they think you're literally tainted. You know, they don't want to hear about your baseball experience. just follow the program that they have. Well, that was the column. Yeah. I mean, I wish that I had the passion for baseball that I do for football and
Starting point is 01:13:05 basketball, because I do think it's so fascinating the changes in the sport. And, you know, I guess it kind of started with Bill James, but in terms of what Billy Bean did in Oakland, you know, the... Moneyball. Yeah. Has never won a world series. I know. I know, but on very limited budgets, at least, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:13:31 Did you see the movie? I saw the movie, and the movie was bullshit, because that A's team was stacked with great pitching and great players. Right. It's a good movie, though. Miguel Tahaada was on that team. Yeah. What was that win streak?
Starting point is 01:13:49 How many games in a row? 20, I think. 20? Yeah. Yeah. All right. You got anything else? No. I got nothing else for you, boss. All right. I did want to mention that 15 years ago today, Gary Williams called it quits.
Starting point is 01:14:09 God, I remember that day. It was shocking. Nobody really saw it coming. And when he retired 15 years ago, 2011, I remember, you and I were doing the show together. We did the entire show the next day about him and ended up, I think we had him on like a week or two later. And it is, I mean, he really is a legend at the University of Maryland,
Starting point is 01:14:38 a total legend. I mean, for a basketball program that was so important that never got over the hump and he got him over the hump to win a national champion and championship, and, you know, he's in the Basketball Hall of Fame, and he had a hole in one two weeks ago. How about that? Wow, that's amazing.
Starting point is 01:14:57 Yeah. Good for him. I had a hole in one two weeks ago. I texted him. I said, you know, you're buying the next time we run into you. That's not on a miniature golf course, is it? No, that's not on a miniature golf course, Tommy. No.
Starting point is 01:15:08 No. Tony was with him. Tony's the one that told me about it. And so the next time, you know, maybe we can get Gary to come to the event. And maybe he can pick up the tab since he had a hole in one. All right. I'll talk to you on Thursday. Okay, boss. See.
