You don't want it.
You don't need it.
But you're going to get it anyway.
The Kevin Sheehan Show.
Here's Kevin.
Tommy's here.
I am here.
The show's presenting sponsor is always Window Nation.

So Tommy wrote a column on the game.
First of all, you weren't there, right?
No, I wasn't there.
So tell everybody, tell everybody, do you think Dan Quinn should be fired right now?
now? Well, I don't see we're firing him right now does any good. I don't think it turns the
team around. I mean, there's no obvious choice on the staff. Think over the only one with
head coaching experience, I think, is Anthony Lynn. No, I think you ride the season out, you know,
at the outside chance that things get turned around somehow.
But I think you're already making plans to fire up the search committee again and start a new in the offseason.
Yeah, that search committee, I bet had some conversations on group text after that one.
Yeah.
Don't you think?
Yes.
Oh, yes.
Look, like the rest of the nation.
Yeah, like the rest of the nation.
I mean, you know, it's funny that you bring that up because I was watching the game and my wife was in the room.
Now, she doesn't watch football.
She doesn't really care much about sports.
And when what happened happened, I just stood there like, you've got to be kidding me.
And I said, that is the worst clock management error in NFL history.
And she just looked at me and she said,
you say that about everything.
It's the best ever.
It's the worst ever.
It wasn't that bad.
I said, this, trust me, will be talked about for years.
No one will ever forget this one.
This is the worst clock management error in the history of the franchise.
And it's either at the top of the list or it's on a list of two or three in NFL history.
It won't be forgotten.
And I knew what was coming.
God.
Yeah.
You know, now, now, Jane was under center for this play, right?
Yeah, he was.
Okay.
Yeah, he was under center.
So I turned to the guy next to me watching the game.
I say, you see, he's under center.
He's going to spike the ball.
And then, you know, they're going to let the clock run down as far as they can,
and then he's going to spike the ball.
Yeah, the only thing is they weren't necessarily in the spike formation.
You know, I was, I'll tell you what, I don't think I've gone through this, like what I was thinking.
Well, what I was thinking when the play ended was, all right, let the clock roll down to 12, 13 seconds.
You want to leave enough time in case there's a pre-snap penalty for a 10 second runoff, but clock it with 12 or 13.
And then in the moment, what I was thinking is, and then on third down, if you want to run the clock down even more,
you can snap it to Jaden and have him throw quickly out of bounds.
The clock is stopped when the play starts.
So there's no actual runoff of a 10 second or on an incomplete pass.
There wouldn't be a runoff of 10 seconds.
Now, you could risk a holding penalty to push the kick back to a longer kick.
You don't want that or any one of the penalties.
So I would have been fine had they kicked it on 12 to 13.
But I was thinking the entire time, you do want to run this clock down.
That was the only part of the last 50 seconds, 55 seconds, that they got right, was the intention of running the clock down.
You want to leave as little time as possible for the other team to do any kind of miracle when they get the ball back.
Yeah, which very interestingly, last night in what was an absolute wow game.
I mean, in an unbelievable fourth quarter and overtime.
Buffalo at the two-minute warning in overtime, kicked it on second and 10 with the Rams, by the way, not having any timeouts.
It was a terrible clock management error. Terrible. And some of you tweeted me and said, see, Buffalo knew what to do. No, they actually didn't know what to do. It worked out for them. They kicked the field goal and it was good. But if it hadn't been good, there would have been a minute 55.
five seconds left and the Rams offense would have been back out under the field.
So it didn't work out.
It worked out fine in terms of the result, but it doesn't make the process, the right process.
But yeah, I was, I actually was like very much on in the moment, like take it down to 12 or 13, clock it.
And then we can throw, you know, an out of bounds throw to burn another four or five seconds on third down and kick it on fourth.
And the reason that I wasn't thinking kick it on third down is because if there is a bad snap,
you don't have any timeouts left anyway, so the clock's going to run out anyway.
Now, Tressway could on a bad snap, get up, roll out and throw the ball out of bounds if he was inclined to do that.
But it would be hard for Tressway to do that as a holder without it being grounding,
without there being some sort of penalty that would have run it off anyway.
But anyway, that's what I was thinking in the moment.
And I said to my wife, this is all time bad.
And she just looked at me and just kind of rolled her eyes as if to say,
yeah, you and the boys say that all the time about lots of things.
And it doesn't usually turn out to be that.
No, this was that.
This was that.
All right.
So what did you think other than, you know, the search committee is probably,
getting rounded up and they're going to be looking for a new coach in the offseason,
which I agree with too.
That is Sunday was fatal.
Dan Quinn for me was on a warm seat, not a hot seat as many people thought.
I thought it was a warm seat.
I don't hold him accountable for last year.
I don't hold anybody accountable for last year unless somebody gives me concrete evidence that says
their training staff, their medical staff is the worst in the league.
And that injury situation last year could have been managed.
differently. I do hold him accountable for Jaden's injury against Seattle.
Like I mentioned in my column.
Yes, you did. I was incensed.
The track record of moments where he's had to defend the indefensible or stand up there and
apologize.
Yeah, against Seattle last year, that was high-level stupidity.
And it was totally unnecessary because the football game was over.
It was 38 to 7 in the fourth quarter with like nine or 10 minutes left.
They weren't coming back to win that game.
And not only do you have him in the game,
and I wouldn't have had a huge issue with him being in the game
if he was just handing the ball off.
Although now we know that just handing the ball off or being under center
can cause him to dislocate his elbow.
But I would not have ever run an RPO in the low red zone
on a condensed field.
with my quarterback who had just come back and we were getting our ass kicked.
That was the first time I really laid it to him, but I still don't hold five and
12.
I don't hold anybody accountable for that.
That is one of those seasons NFL teams have, and if you lose your best player and your
best player is a quarterback, forget about it.
You're doomed.
This year at 1 and 3, there's a lot of context to the 1 and 3, you know, because
quarterback didn't play in two of those games.
two and a half of those games, excuse me.
And there is, you know, and by the way, they were missing receivers
and missing their best offensive linemen and et cetera, et cetera.
But Sunday's clock management error is fatal if you don't win, Tommy.
I gave it 8 and 4 the rest of the way to finish 9, 7, and 1.
It's either that or he's gone.
And by the way, the 8 and 4 at 9.7.
and one probably needs to get you to the postseason,
because if it comes down to you getting beat out by a 10-win team
and you would have won the tiebreaker with that team had you beaten the Giants,
rather than tied the Giants, you're probably gone.
But an 8-4 finish, I think, is what he needs to have a chance to be the head coach next year.
Yeah, there needs to be a dramatic turnaround.
I'd be kind of curious what the impact of a month.
Monday night football went against the 49ers in San Francisco would be.
Do you know what the point spread is?
Like seven and a half, something like that, right?
Yeah, it's seven and a half.
I haven't seen any of the early numbers.
I will just tell you, based on having a decent feel for these things,
the public's going to absolutely hammer the 49ers,
laying seven and a half.
And they'll all buy the hook down to seven,
and they'll sit back and laugh that Vegas made the line.
line only a touchdown.
And so I am pretty sure that I will have Washington in the smell test.
Now, the smell test went two and five over the weekend.
Still up by significant margin for the season, but it went two and five over the weekend.
Look, that doesn't mean they're going to win the game.
It just means they may cover the game.
You know, I do want to talk a little bit more about the encouraging things about Sunday,
because they're all, you know, forgotten, as they should have been.
But before that, I think we've got a lot more on the clock management error of the century bone.
And I'm going to ask you, because I don't know what the answer to this is, but tell me how you would break up or slice up the pie chart of blame.
And I think that the three, you know, possibilities for slices are Dan Quinn, David Blow and Jaden Daniels.
So how would you slice that pie chart of blame for that final play up?
Well, I'm not sure what would be right here.
Let me just point out that anybody in a commander's uniform
has some responsibility for what happened.
And anybody who didn't grab David Blow or Dan Quinn and say,
what are we doing here?
has some level responsibility.
Anyone in that huddle has some level responsibility,
but of the three main characters being Dan Quinn,
David Blow, and Jaden Daniels,
because Dan Quinn's responsibility is, you know,
lords over everything.
I'm going to divide it up 50% Dan Quinn,
25% David Blow, 25% Jaden, Daniels.
All right. I'm at basically 75% Dan Quinn, and then 12.5% both Blow and Jaden Daniels.
I'm disappointed more in Jaden Daniels and a little bit concerned about Jaden Daniels rather than accusatory towards Jaden Daniels.
you know, Dan Quinn has the responsibility as a CEO head coach who's not calling plays,
who's not coordinating either side of the ball, to handle all of that stuff.
And there were multiple opportunities for him.
This is, Tommy, what my real frustration with all of this was is this wasn't, you know, panic time.
When the play ends on first down at the 26 and Rashad,
White gains two yards. There are 50 seconds left in the game. There is plenty of time. This is a
completely controllable situation. You have already reached the point in which you are in
NFL terms in 2026 chip shot field goal range, a 41 or a 42 yard field goal. I know he missed
an extra point. I know that there's rain. I know the field's wet. But the idea, especially
with a team that's been penalized a bunch and was penalized a bunch again on Sunday
and with the way the flags have been flying all year long around the league,
I am absolutely content with the 24-yard line and a kicker who has a massive leg.
This is, for him, this is a 58-degree wedge for you golfers.
This is a 60-degree, a 56-a-58-degree wedge.
He's not pulling out an 8-iron or a 7-iron to try to not.
knock this thing through or, you know, a hybrid.
This is a very easy kick for 99% of the kickers in the NFL.
Now you just have to protect the football and you've got to run the clock.
You're protecting the football.
You're protecting the field position and you are running the clock down to as little time as possible.
You know, many suggestions were they could have lined up like they wanted to at 25 seconds and he
could have taken a knee there and then spiked it with three seconds left.
Yes, and that would have been fine too.
Absolutely.
Now, either situation is a situation in which you are not calling a regular play.
The idea, and this is why Quinn gets 75% of it, the idea that he allowed or said it was okay to run another
play. The Giants had just fumbled on a play in which they should have been protective of the football
and field position. They were at the Washington 25-yard line. Now, their situation was different because
their kicker had missed three kicks, but it was a completely controllable situation. And once
anybody decided, we're going to run a play here to try to get more yards, because that's what he
admitted yesterday. We called a play to gain more yards. No, that's the first mistake.
You did not need any more yards and the risk was not worth the reward. The risk was an incomplete
pass would have been a risk. You didn't want an incomplete pass if you're snapping the ball with
25 seconds left. You don't want a penalty. You don't want a turnover. There are just too many risks for
what? A few extra yards. And if he had thrown it to Senate with 25 seconds left, Senate probably
gets tackled by Deonti Banks inbound, or at least his forward progress is stopped. And in terms
of the other opportunities, I mean, is he going to throw deep to Berks? Is he going to throw deep
to a Conquo? Nobody's really doing much. That was the absolute start to the fiasco, calling an actual
play and then blow to call a play that includes subbing out your 11 personnel for 13 personnel,
having a longer count, and having pre-snap motion, there was a complete cluelessness to blow
and the play call.
Like, how are we going to get this play call off by 25 seconds?
We're not.
So that puts us in jeopardy.
Do you think they all thought they had three timeouts in overtime?
No.
I think that they all knew that they didn't have any timeouts.
I think if they didn't know that they, I mean, I've watched the All-22 and you can see the bench from the sideline view.
You can just see them jumping up and down.
And so they knew that they didn't have a timeout.
To call the play, that's error number one.
to allow him to call an actual play is error number one.
To actually let Blow call the play that he called is error number two.
And then to not stop the whole thing either through headset before 15 seconds on the play clock
or by running out onto the field and screaming to Jaden, clock it is on the coach, period.
75% of it is on Quinn.
12.5% is on the dumb, dumb play call, cluelessness.
And 12.5% really on Jaden is more about my disappointment level with him not being a quarterback at this point in his career that could have erased all of the dumb decisions that were made before the snap of the ball.
What does it say about Jaden?
It says he's like a lot of players.
By the way, many quarterbacks, too.
They just aren't, this isn't something that comes naturally to them.
You know, Cooley has said it, and Cooley was on the show yesterday for you guys that missed it.
He was great.
He actually just comes up with ideas, and I haven't even researched this one, but he said,
I think teams should basically line up an onside kick formation, declare onside kick.
And that way, the guys that go down to cover the kicks,
can run right when the ball's kicked.
And I don't know why teams don't do that.
It's actually, it might be the dumbest idea or it might be the most brilliant idea I've heard.
But more research would be required to see whether or not it would be legal and whether or not the timing of it would work out.
But anyway, I think Cooley used to say all the time, he said it to me early on when we got to know each other.
He said, you know, you really are and people like you.
really are better at this stuff than we are, players and coaches.
Because we don't watch games on TV as much.
We watch film.
And you lose all of the context and all of the feel when you're watching film.
And he just, I think that's a lot of football players and a lot of football coaches.
They don't consume the sport like fans.
fans do. And fans are very much into, some fans are very much into these kinds of things that
they recognize to be very important. You know, these are the margins of, you know, win and
loss. You've got to win on these margins. I've always been frustrated. You've known me forever.
I've always been frustrated with coaches who can't do that. And I hate that we haven't had
coaches who have been good at it over the years. You know, Jay was okay.
but not great.
You know, Mike truly was just okay at it.
But, yeah, and then Zorn was a dumb dumb.
And Gibbs, you know, version 2-0, I mean, let's not forget the two back-to-back timeouts that he called against the bills in the Sean Taylor game.
Yeah.
That cost him a win.
You know, you know what also, it speaks to going old school here for a minute.
And I'm sure Jayden's not alone in this.
The quarterback used to be in charge on the field.
Yeah.
You're right.
Calling plays.
Right.
The quarterback used to be in charge.
And I know a long time ago, but that persona has been lost.
You know, the image of the quarterback holding his helmet,
waiting to find out what he's supposed to do next, is the image.
of the quarterback today.
You know, and
the fact that he didn't question is the fact
that he didn't say
that he had no
awareness of the
situation is alarming,
but it's disappointing
that, to me, that
he wasn't more forceful.
That, hey, he didn't know,
okay, so it was hard for him to be
forceful.
if he knew
would he have been
forceful? What would he have done?
If he had
reservations about the call,
would he have voiced them? Would he
have just said, screw it? We're not doing
that. I don't know the
answer to that. I don't.
But you know what? My
desire,
my wish would be that of course
he would. That of course
he would recognize that
Dan and Dan is really good at this, this, this, this, and this.
But this area of football, he's not that good at.
And so I got to make sure that I am, you know, checking on these kinds of things at the end of halves and at the end of games.
And David, he's a first-time coordinator.
He's literally just doing what the coach tells him to do, which also isn't, you know, very comforting about David Blow, who's supposed to be, you know, the next Sean McVeigh, the next.
the next Kyle Shanahan, who just two weeks ago was already being mentioned as a head coach next year.
Well, you know, the fact that he called the play that he called in that moment,
he shouldn't be anybody's head coach anytime soon.
He's got to get this coordinator thing down.
And he's got to understand, you know, what kind of play he can call in that moment.
The fact that they weren't prepped for that situation.
Now, that's not, you know, there's, you're prepped for the situation.
of no timeouts at the end of a half at the end of a game at the end of overtime.
But the specific, you know, clock differences, nine seconds, ball here, play call.
Somebody should have said, we never, ever huddle and have a long-ass count and pre-motion
and a sub-package when the clock is, you know, a factor in the game.
That's not when we don't have timeouts.
So,
but I,
you have said, go ahead.
No, I'm, I'm, back to your point,
there's only one explanation that takes Jaden off the hook.
For, from my standpoint,
of not being disappointed,
not being concerned about how clueless he appears to have been.
And that is, if he thought there was a timeout left.
Because in fact,
if he thought there was a timeout left,
what he did was the smart thing.
This is what I said.
When I asked you that question,
I think somebody in that group
thought they had another timeout left.
Yeah, I thought you meant, did the coaches think that?
No, I don't, I think the coaches knew that they didn't have a timeout.
Because, you know, something else from that last play,
did you know that Chris Paul stepped on Jaden's foot when he came back from under center?
Yeah, I saw that.
Yeah. I mean, it wasn't like, you know, the Dallas step, but he, one of the reasons that perhaps Jaden was a little bit off and a little bit panicked is he did get his foot quickly and brushed by Chris Paul.
Again, another reason, you know, to just go up there, take the snap, tell everybody, the offensive lineman, hold your ground, nobody move, and I'm going to spike the ball.
Right.
But yeah, if Jaden thought there was a timeout left, which Chris Paul in an interview with Scott Abraham said that he knew in the huddle, at some point during that final drive, that they had no timeouts left.
Is it possible that he knew and Jaden didn't?
Is it possible that Blow or Quinn or someone said we've got one time out left?
His behavior is a behavior that says we're good because we have a timeout left.
Because there's no urgency.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now, we've talked about this and you've mentioned it.
And I tend to agree that this is such a memorable, flagrant mistake, that it won't be forgotten.
And you don't come back from it.
But we're living in society where you can come back from anything.
You know?
Immediately, it's hard to fathom that you could possibly ever forget what happened in that game.
But people come back from the most horrific thing in our culture and society these days.
So, while, I mean, well, you know, there's a level of intelligence that tells me,
know, every time I look at Dan Quinn, I'm going to think of this play.
I don't know if it thinks them for good.
I'm totally with you.
I mean, look, we see redemption stories all the time.
We see comebacks in sports all the time.
In life, we see it all the time.
Dan Quinn's not a bad person, and people really like them a lot.
I wonder what this will do to,
those players in the locker room, the coaches in that building in terms of how they view him
after this.
You know, if it's like, whoa, like this is an area, my God, get the guy some help.
You know, so something like this doesn't happen again.
And if they lose a little bit of that, you know, I doubt they will because I'm going to
tell you right now, I bet you half the people in that building don't even know why they screwed
it up. But yes, Tommy, if they were to go on this year and win eight of their final 12,
win the division at 9-7 and 1, and win a playoff game or two, can you imagine how much
focus there would be on what happened Sunday if they have success the rest of the year?
I agree. I agree. You can't. There's no way.
you could fire him if they win, if they win enough games to make the playoffs and win a
playoff game, he's not going anywhere.
Now, A, do you think that's going to happen?
No, I don't think that's going to happen.
I don't.
I don't think that's going to happen.
I mean, I think anything can happen in the NFL, and I think anything can happen in this division
right now.
But that really felt like an absolute goal.
gut punch that's going to be hard to recover from.
Although, you know, we'll learn a lot about him, his coaching staff, and his players
on what happens Monday night and then after the buy, because I don't think, unless he were
to do something like this again.
Like if there's another one of these Monday night in Santa Clara, then he got to go.
I mean, that's it.
But, A, I don't think it will happen.
I'm disappointed saying that after five weeks of the season and them being nowhere near mathematically eliminated.
But there were some things Sunday that I want to get to, including some things that were encouraging.
And then, yeah, it would be an incredible story if it actually happened, but I'm not expecting it at all.
I would put those odds as long-shot odds.
Although even a win on Monday night would be quite this story.
Yes, it would.
Of immediate redemption.
Yes, it absolutely would.
Let me just say that if they won a playoff game this season, and that was it,
after Sunday, and I did not feel this way before Sunday.
You guys know this.
It's not that I'm a huge Quinn fan.
just didn't think that he had earned the right to be dismissed at this point.
I just, again, I write off last year.
But I think that it would have to, for me, after Sunday and after last week, and then
thinking back to the Seattle game last year, I think Sunday was so egregious and so
reflective of somebody who's so limited
when it comes to football, basic, situational
football awareness,
I don't think I can have him back next year as my coach,
even if he goes 9, 7, and 1 and wins a playoff game.
I think he'd have to get to the Super Bowl for me.
I think he'd have to get to the championship game
for me to not seriously consider
looking for, in my opinion,
and it was my opinion a few years ago,
even though I knew they loved Quinn,
and I didn't mind the hire of Quinn at all.
But my first preference,
NFL head coach,
is an offensive head coach.
That's who I...
Especially with the quarterback you've got now.
I mean, everything should have been all along
once they realized,
once they saw for sure what they had,
with Jaden.
Like everything revolves around Jaden.
Everything involving this team to make it better should be with Jaden Daniels in mind, including the coach.
Yeah.
I think that eight and four the rest of the way it would be quite this story.
And obviously it will require Jaden Daniels to play in at least eight football games.
and really all 12 for them to have any chance of turning this season around.
I think we saw enough on Sunday to understand that there is one player that is head and heels
above all of the rest of the 70s, as Quinn calls it, or the other 69 on the team,
and it's the quarterback, and you are doomed without him.
You have no chance to be a good team.
You have a chance to be a mediocre average team, no chance to be a good team or a playoff team without him.
So he's got to play another 12.
And then, you know, it'd be a hell of a story, but I'd still be concerned.
Right now, there is no chance that Dan Quinn is my head coach next year.
No chance after Sunday.
That was a fatal blow.
I cannot have my head coach not giving us an advantage on these razor-thin areas of the game
that really decide, you know, sometimes three, four, five football games a year on your schedule.
So I can't have that moving forward anymore.
I've learned, the irony of it is, of it, Tommy, is that he was pretty good at this the first year.
There weren't any egregious errors because these are, this is my area.
I nitpicked some of the stuff here and there, but none of it was awful.
none of it was, you know, disqualifying.
Sunday was disqualifying.
From my standpoint, I love him as a culture guy.
I love him as a leader.
I think that there is great benefit to have having Dan Quinn,
to have to having had Dan Quinn for the last couple of years to come into this organization
that's so desperately, so desperately needed like normalcy in the locker room and in the building.
and I don't know if you would have gotten that
with a first time GM and a first time
head coach if they had gone in that direction.
Who knows?
But Sunday was disqualifying
for head coach.
So he'd have to turn it around in a major way.
And it's not that I'm rooting for it.
It's not that I don't like him
because I think there are tremendous qualities.
But that level of ineptitude
in that moment,
that level of blunder is really inexcusable.
and unforgivable.
And yet, you know, we should forgive because it's just sports, Tommy.
It's just football.
But, you know, it's big business.
And what you saw there, what you saw last week to a much lesser degree is a bit concerning,
more than a bit.
It's disqualifying in so many ways.
Can he, you know, redeem himself, go eight and four and make a run to the NFC championship game?
If he does that, I'm all on board and bringing him back.
But I now understand more than ever before
that something like this at the end of a game is clearly possible.
And I don't have a quarterback, it would appear, that can erase
that level of incompetence from the sideline.
At least not yet.
He can learn.
And maybe he thought he had a timeout left.
That takes him off the hook.
Now, he should know that he doesn't have any timeouts left.
But what if somebody told him, no, we do have one left.
We do have one left.
Because he's not keeping track of that, you know, during the overtime.
And a lot of people think you get three in overtime.
You only get two.
All right.
Anything else on this subject?
Well, other things about the game like you, I want to talk about.
Yeah, no.
We're going to do that next segment because there was encouraging signs for this football team.
And a couple that were, you know, somewhat alarming as well.
We'll get to that and a lot more after these words from a few of our sponsors.

This segment of the show is brought to you by Surfside.
Taco Stand. Surfside is one of my favorite places in the entire area. Many of you know Surfside,
an award-winning local spot with great tacos, casidias, fajitas, incredible margaritas. It's one of those
places that always feels like an escape in the middle of the city. Their locations are all around
town from Tenley Town to the wharf. The one in DuPonts open 24 hours a day and they're opening
up in Virginia for the first time at the Chesterbrook Shopping Center in
McLean. I'm a regular at the Surfside in Tenley right there at Wisconsin and Van S Streets
Northwest. Tocos, they're the best there. They're my go-to. The Bora Bora. The marinated
chicken tacos are incredible. So are the marinated steak tacos. That item on the menu is called
the Cabo. Surfside's part of a locally owned family of restaurants and hospitality brands.
It includes Millies and Spring Valley. Wheelhouse on Connecticut Avenue with Chevy Chase Circle
in D.C. That's their new one. Great spot, by the way, to go watch games. They've got a huge bar.
Jetty's is one of the best sandwich shops in town and, of course, the bullpen down at Nats Park,
all owned by my good friend Bo Blair. Bo is flat out one of the best restaurant tours in the DMV,
a phenomenal entrepreneur. Surfside's tacos, burritos, big fresh salads, wraps. Everything on the
menu is delicious. And who can say no to a
spicy margarita.
On nights where you'd rather stay in, you can get Surfside through DoorDash or Uber Eats.
That is a go-to for the Sheeans.
We've done our fair share of Surfside via delivery.
If you're the one planning the office lunch or birthday party, they'll bring a whole
taco bar to you.
That makes you look really smart.
Surfside Taco Stand, when you get there, tell them that I told you to go.
All right, Tommy.
I think that there was a few things from the game.
Like, you know, fine line, right?
Like, if they don't bungle the end and they kick a field goal and they win 30 to 27 in overtime
and they're two and three and the Eagles had lost earlier and Dallas had lost on Thursday night,
it's like the whole season is in play now.
And you would have said, oh my God, how great is Jaden Daniels?
I mean, two electrified.
runs for touchdowns, you know, hit every throw.
There were probably some areas in which, and Cooley pointed some of those out,
and I'm sure Steve Suter will tomorrow on the film breakdown.
The defense in the first half was outstanding, not so much in the second half.
Terry was really big in the game.
Antonio Williams continues to impress.
We saw our first, you know, Jaden Daniels-Chigga-Conco opportunity since the first half of the Philadelphia game,
because they haven't been together since.
And by the way, the offensive line with Cosmi back in it, they ran the football.
Kroski Merritt had his biggest day of the year.
There was a lot to be encouraged about had they come out with the win.
And if you just erase from your mind for a moment, it's impossible the actual final result.
There are some things about this football team that are going to make them a difficult team
to play, no matter who you are.
At the same time, what was concerning was that James Winston and the Giants rolled up 331 yards
and 24 points in the second half and came from behind down 14 to nothing.
It was clear, look, I don't want to say I studied the film or anything like that.
This is just an off-the-cuff point of view.
but it was clear the adjustments that the Giants made in the second half to their offense,
which on the surface just seemed that James was getting rid of the ball a lot quicker than he was in the first half.
The pressure that they put on Winston in the first half wasn't there in the second half,
and the defense never adjusted to that.
Yeah, it was not a good half for the defense.
I don't know what you thought
but at halftime
when they're up 12 to 3
I just thought
well this is a win
if they don't
you know turn the ball over in the second
half if they end up
punting four or five times
in the second half
the giants aren't capable
right now against this
defense on this field
with this weather with that quarterback
and look
one of the things that I've loved about James Winston over the years is he is just absolutely
fearless.
Like there's no result that gets him down.
He is such an optimist, positive guy, and he just always keeps firing.
It doesn't matter.
And let's not forget, he was the number one pick in an NFL draft for a reason.
He has talent.
he can really throw the football.
And at this point in his career, at what, 33 years old or whatever he is,
he knows how to play the position.
His problem has always been he's a turnover machine.
He keeps both teams in the game at the same time because his fearlessness gets him in trouble.
His overaggressiveness gets him in trouble.
But they let him heat up and then they had no answers for him.
Pressure didn't work, meaning blitz pressure.
Coverage didn't work.
And even though for the most part, they stopped the run until late in the game and Scadaboo had a couple of runs.
But for the most, this is, that should be, by the way, other than Jaden.
For me, I think through five games, what's apparent is this is a much improved run-stopping defense,
much improved from what it was last year.
It would be hard to be worse.
But it's actually a decent rush defense.
They stop the run.
good job. They get a lot of TFLs.
You know, they really do
end up with a lot of behind the line
of scrimmage hits
on ball carriers.
Whether or not it results in a TFL, it
completely, you know, stuffs
the play.
But it was alarming
that they weren't able to adjust
to what the Giants were doing. They didn't
have an answer in the second
half because they weren't such good control
in the first half. And I thought
this was going to wind up being a
field goal game at the end of the first half, you know, 18 to 6.
Yeah.
Or something like that.
I thought that's the way it was going to unfold.
I thought it was a win.
You know, the way they were, the way Jane was playing, and he, I thought he had a very
good game.
You know, he made some mistakes, but, but again, his MO is he didn't turn a ball over
on a day where it would have been easy to turn the ball over.
And he didn't do that.
so uh
you know there was a lot to put
but you know I'm thinking at the end of the game
John Harbaugh
must think feel like
a Mense candidate
who just got put in a remedial
classroom
in the NFC East
I mean look at the G
really look Nick Siriani
Ryan Schottnheimer
and now Dan Quinn
yeah
we're not talking about
you know a college
of coaches here.
Right.
I know.
And John Harbaugh clearly has had an impact on the Giants.
Yeah, there's no doubt.
I mean, that's a resilient, tough football team.
I talked about it after watching them and watching the Cardinals game on the condensed.
It's like, you can tell what they want to be.
They want to be, they want to be an old school NFC East team.
They want to be the more physical team.
They want to be the more disciplined team.
team. And look, they, they missed three field goals and turn the ball over, you know, on a forced
fumble in the first half and then fumbled in overtime when they were in field goal range.
It was a crazy game. I'm sure they feel, and on some level, they feel like they got away
with one getting out of it with a tie. But on the other hand, they were in range of ending the
game themselves when, you know, Duran Payne stripped Scataboo in overtime.
And they could have taken three knees and kicked the game winner with the clock rolling down to close to zeros had they wanted to do that.
I think that they have a more justifiable reason for running plays because their kicker had missed three times, including once and overtime.
So understood on that.
But yeah, he's in a division right now where at three one and one, do I think they're the best team in the division?
I don't. I don't. Now, they do have, actually, let me reconsider this for a moment.
I'm not a Jackson Dart guy at all. Wasn't coming out. I thought he was a Lane Kiffin creation, didn't like him last year.
And he played great in the opener and then got hurt in the second game. I actually think I said multiple times last year.
They're better off with James Winston at quarterback than they are with Jackson Dart or Russell Wilson, remember, who was on the team.
team last year as well. They have an elite level wide receiver in Malik neighbors. They have a high,
high level pass catching tight end and likely. And they've got a battering ram as a running back. And
then they are talented on defense, you know, even without Brian Burns. So I guess I shouldn't
discount them. And maybe with Jamis, I actually like their chances better than if Jackson
Dart were the quarterback.
They have the Saints coming up this weekend at home, so a pretty good chance, I would think, to get to four one-in-one.
They come back here on a Thursday night in early November, and if we're not out of it, that could be an important game for us to kind of stay in it mathematically before Thanksgiving.
But yeah, I don't know. He's clearly, clearly turned around the whole vibe there.
Yes.
no doubt
which shows
or I guess
indicates what a coach can do
but
okay yeah
I mean
there were things
to like about the game
but
to me
I'm more disturbed
about the defense
than you seem to be
well I know they did
they did stop the run
the way the giants
cut through them
like butter
in the second half
was pretty alarming
Yeah, I mean, no doubt.
They had 331 yards and a half.
That's almost, that's really hard to do.
I did not, and Cooley pointed this out, and I mentioned it in the post game, I did not love the way they played the drive up 27 to 13.
There were 11 minutes to go when Washington scored, converted on the two-point conversion.
It really felt like that was ball game.
And the Giants went down so easily.
kind of like Seattle did against Washington when they had a nine-point lead.
I mean, the drive in total was a three-minute, 45-second drive in 75 yards.
It was just too easy.
And the fourth and seven that they scored on to Isaiah likely was really a terrible, terrible defensive play.
Dropping pain into coverage, leaving number nine, Isaiah likely wide open.
was insane. I don't know what was called there, but clearly that was not a defensive play that
that that was you know, if you want to play Ben don't break at 2713. I don't know why you would do that
when you had been playing so well the other way, being aggressive. Maybe James was going to figure
out the blitz eventually. But if you're going to play Ben, don't break. Don't break in the red zone
on fourth and seven. You got to get off the field there. All right. Well,
San Francisco, Monday night, and then the bye week.
Jeez.
And, you know, coming out of the by week,
they'll have the Eagles at home on a Sunday night.
That could get flexed.
Don't be shocked if that game is flexed on Sunday night, November 1st.
I've not looked at the schedule to see what other games are being played,
but I'm going to look at it right now to see if there's any obvious,
magical kind of matchup.
Kansas City at Denver, but that's the big CBS doublehead.
Actually, you know what?
It's going to stay right where it is.
There aren't any really good games that day.
Unless they're going to move Cleveland, Pittsburgh,
if it's a showdown for first place into Sunday night football.
I guess that's possible.
Minnesota at Detroit would be a possibility, I guess.
All right.
I want to mention something that wasn't nearly as bad as what Dan Quinn did on Sunday.
but Sean McVeigh got really lucky last night
because I think he made a massive, massive error at the end of regulation.
We'll get to that next.
Fall and football, what a great pairing.

All right, Tommy, tell us about Shelly's.
Well, you know, Shelley's backroom at 1331 F Street, Northwest in the district is a cigar bar.
Okay. And I mean, that's a big part of their business.
the idea that you can go in there and smoke cigars.
You know, that at some place you can't do,
something you can't do in most places around the area.
But we always talk about, we always wind up talking about the food.
You know, when people go there for the first time,
they wind up talking about the food.
Okay.
And it's, you know, it really is.
I got something on X from J-Smove-0-24.
who says,
I stopped by Shelly's to watch some playoff baseball.
I tried the bacon-wrapped scallops, chef's kiss.
So the bacon-wraps, there you go.
There's a recommendation on the menu at Shelley's backroom.
And there's some, I mean, just last week we talked about the great stakes.
That somebody said they had a great steak there.
I mean, it's really the hidden gem is the menu.
at Shelly's back room.
And you can look for it.
You know, go to go into shelley's backroom.com.
Their food menu, their drink menu, and their cigar selection.
All right.
So last night, what if, what a football game?
37, 34, Buffalo in overtime.
Josh Allen in that game, Tommy, last night,
became the first player in NFL history, history,
to average over 10 yards.
per pass completion and over 10 yards per rush, as long as he had at least 10 carries and 10
pass attempts. No player in the history of the game has ever been as big playish as Josh Allen was
last night. Ten carries 12.1 yards, 12.1 yards per carry. Just 12 of 19, but for 200.000.
10 yards, 11.1 yards per pass reception, a touchdown and an interception.
And Buffalo won in overtime, 37, 34, in an absolute wild game.
The score going into the fourth quarter was 19 to 14.
And then 35 points in the fourth quarter.
And then you had Buffalo on their opening drive in field goal range to take the lead.
This was their opening drive.
And this guy, landman for the Rams, was just a forced fumble machine last night.
He forced one on James Cook.
The Rams come down, and they have a field goal blocked on a third and five at the Buffalo 30,
where I thought Sean McVeigh got a little bit conservative,
and he ended up running the ball.
They didn't get anything.
The field goal got blocked.
They have major special teams issues again this year.
That's the reason they weren't the one seed last year.
And then Buffalo came down, and as I mentioned, there was a clock management error by Joe Brady, the head coach.
They had a chance first, you know, in second and ten at the Ram 27, they had a chance to run a second down play, a third down play.
And, you know, even if it was a knee and they lost two yards, maybe they didn't want to lose the yards for the field goal,
but they could have run, you know, another 80 seconds off the clock.
before the field goal and he didn't do it,
but Tyler Bass made the kick
and they won the game 37-34.
The error that was made
and, you know, Sean
isn't perfect. There have been
these moments with Sean McVeigh before.
But at the end of regulation,
the Rams were down 34 to 27.
They got the ball back with about a minute and a half to go.
They had one time out left
and they motored down the field.
And on a third and seven,
Stafford hit Kyron Williams, he gained nine yards, and it was first in goal at the Buffalo
1.
When that play ended, there were 25 seconds on the clock.
He didn't use his timeout.
He decided I'm not using a timeout.
I'm going to limit the number of plays that we're going to have to get the ball in.
I'm going to get up to the line of scrimmage.
We're going to run a play.
And the play he ran was a touchdown run to Kyle.
Byron Williams, and when the play ended, there were five seconds left on the clock.
Let me just explain why this is a massive clock management error.
You might say, well, he had Buffalo on his heels.
He hadn't used a timeout.
They were, you know, you didn't want to give them a chance to rest and, you know, sort of get it together because they were on their heels.
That's fine.
but you blew an opportunity to have four chances to punch it in from the one when you didn't call a timeout with 25 seconds left.
And if Kyron Williams had gotten stopped and you would call time out with five seconds left, you would have had one more play.
Maybe two, maybe two, but more likely one more play instead of three more plays.
that's just it worked out for them.
They scored.
They had Buffalo a bit on their heels.
I would understand that as an answer,
but I don't think it would be a good enough answer.
I'm not giving up 20 seconds and three plays for the opportunity to catch Buffalo on their heels on one.
I want more opportunities to tie the game and force overtime.
I don't want to, and by the way, I was considering, I thought he might go for two there to win the game, especially with the kicker who he has and their special teams unit.
But that was a massive mistake, in my opinion.
Give me three extra opportunities, you know, or at least two, because you're going to run a second down play with a timeout.
Give me two extra plays rather than, you know, catching them on their heels.
hell of a football game last night.
And the L.A. Rams are now two and three.
A team that was a prohibitive, prohibitive Super Bowl favorite is now two and three.
All right, we'll finish up.
I want to get Tommy's thoughts on the baseball playoffs after these words from a few of our sponsors.

mybooky.orgie.orgie. So the Dodgers are down to nothing. Do they come back?
I think I like the Brewers
I like the Brewers
before the series started
I've watched both of these games
the Brewers are a really good team
I mean they made a bunch of errors
yesterday their starting pitcher
was really good but
they wound up with two pitcher errors
yesterday on throws the first
but their bullpen came in
and pitched five innings of shut out
and I think no hit baseball
against the Dodgers
Otani is struggling
I don't think they're going to bench them, but there's talk about it.
And the Brewers are just a really good team.
And I am rooting for them because, you know, on the American League,
you've got to raise in the Guardians, the Guardians won yesterday.
So you're guaranteed a small market world series, which I think would be great.
Will baseball think it's great?
Oh, no, no.
Milwaukee versus Tampa or Cleveland?
No, that's not a marquee.
matchup. But with the lockout looming
and the fight over the salary cap and all the hubb
over the disparity between rich teams and
and teams that don't spend, it would be great
to have two bottom feeders in the World Series.
The Brewers and the Raisin and the Guardian's payroll combined
is not as much as the Dodgers.
Yoshiyama Moto last night,
he entered the game as we talked about
last week with an 8 and 1 postseason record and a 2.14 ERA.
And he lasted just two and two thirds innings last night.
It was a stunning start.
He pitched.
I was surprised Roberts pulled him from the game,
but he already had a pitch count up to 75 in the third inning.
And he looked exhausted and they yanked him.
And actually, they got through the next inning or two unscathed.
and they came back to tie that game at 4 to 4 and then lost 7 to 4.
It was stunning to watch him because he seemed so unhittable in the postseason.
But the game really turned on Milwaukee outfielders Jake Bowers at bat, 12 pitch at bat.
That seemed to unnerve Yamamoto wound up, you know, fouling the ball off and the bases loaded.
He fouled off six consecutive foul balls.
you know and that seemed to be where the game changed for my walking wow what in it bad i'm looking
at it right now um that is that is a long at that it was 12 pitches before he walked him to load
the bases and then yellich came up and hit a two run rbi single yeah all right um anything else
nothing else for you boss all right that's all right that'll
do it for today. I'll be back tomorrow with Steve Souter's film breakdown of the Giant Game.
