Starting point is 00:00:02 You don't want it. You don't need it. But you're going to get it anyway. The Kevin Cheon Show. Here's Kevin. Second and goal. Ten seconds. Daniels fires.
Starting point is 00:00:14 And Joe. Jameson Crowley with seconds remaining. December 22nd of last year, Jaden to Jameson Crowder with six seconds to go to beat the Eagles. 36 to 33. Why am I playing that play? coming into the show? Well, I got this from Pete.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Pete is an Eagles fan. He writes Kevin. The dumpster fire article had some very good reasoning behind it. And don't forget the one game Washington won, Jalen Hertz got hurt early, Devante Smith dropped a wide open pass, and the refs missed an obvious false start on the game-winning play. We should have swept you guys. The show's presenting sponsor as always, Window Nation, 86690 Nation,
Starting point is 00:01:13 windonation.com if you need new windows. I've got one guest on the show today. Joel Corey, former NFL agent and current salary cap and contract expert for CBSSports.com. We'll be my guest in the next segment. I'll get to what the Wizards did on the final night of the draft with their second round pick in the final segment of the show today. So if you missed it yesterday, Tommy and I talked about an article that was written by Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice. He is going through the NFC East teams and writing 10 reasons why those teams' 20-25 seasons will turn into dumpster fires.
Starting point is 00:02:03 And yeah, you know, Pete's got a point. and Tommy and I talked about it, there were some pretty compelling reasons why the season could go backwards next year. Some of those reasons we've talked about. What's interesting is that Jimmy Kempski has a list of 10 reasons why the Eagles season might turn into a dumpster fire. So he went after his own team today. I'm going to read from that because some of those reasons make sense. as well. But thank you, Pete, for sending me down the very, you know, long rabbit hole of going back to December 22nd and the game against the Eagles. I pulled up my notes from that game.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And they're amazing, as I read through them, in terms of just how fired up I was, and probably all of you were, about that game and how great Jaden Daniels was in that game. First of all, just to answer Pete's, you know, Jalen Hertz got hurt. We remember that, of course. He got hurt in the first quarter. Jalen Hertz does not play defense. And Philadelphia in that game gave up 36 points. And Washington had to overcome five turnovers to score 36 points
Starting point is 00:03:34 against a team that had won 10 games in a row and was clearly at that point the best defensive team in the league. And yes, very much do I remember Devante Smith dropping that third down pass from Kenny Pickett, who had replaced Jalen Hertz. It was right at the two-minute warning. It would have given Philadelphia a first down. Washington had one time out left. that would have in effect ended the game, even if Washington used its final timeout and Philly, you know, kicked a field goal, they would have done so with like 20 seconds to go,
Starting point is 00:04:15 25 seconds to go. I mean, nothing was impossible, obviously, last year for Washington to overcome. But it's also possible that Philly, you know, picks up another first down or even scores a touchdown to end the game. They were up 30 to 28 in the moment. and Devante Smith was wide open on the third and five. Kenny Pickett put the ball right between the numbers,
Starting point is 00:04:42 and Devante Smith dropped it. I did forget about the touchdown pass to Jameson Crowder, and Cornelius Lucas false starting. He did, and it wasn't called. Now, that would not have ended the game. Washington would have had, you know, instead of second and goal from the nine-yard line, it would have been second and goal from the 14 with 10 seconds to go.
Starting point is 00:05:06 So they would have still had a chance. But yes, you know, I went back and I looked at my notes and I put in there that Washington got away with a few. Actually, they got away with a few calls in the game. Included in that was Lucas false starting on the play. But on that touchdown pass. But man, as I went through my notes, here were some of the things that I jotted down. Jaden Daniels in the game, 24 of 39 for 258, 5 touchdowns with absolutely no run game to support him in that particular game. He was the team's leading rusher by far, 81 yards on nine carries, and he had incredible fourth down conversions on scrambles,
Starting point is 00:05:56 including what really kept them in the game. Fourth and 11 on the final play of the third quarter, he ran for 29 yards when they were down 27 to 14. If they don't pick it up there, it's pretty much a game over. Yeah, he was insanely great on that particular day. I'm looking through my notes, and I wrote that this game was his match.
Starting point is 00:06:26 masterpiece, even though there were plenty of choices for his masterpiece. But I wrote, considering the opponent and how much he had to overcome in the game, this was the gem of the season for him. And I wrote that even though you could consider this game to be his rookie season masterpiece, it had imperfections because he threw a terrible interception in the fourth quarter. But on that particular day, I wrote, best player on the field, best player on any field, anywhere in the league yesterday. He became the first rookie and only the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 250, rush for at least 75 and throw five touchdown passes in the same game. The only other quarterback to do it was Cam Newton in his MVP season in 20.
Starting point is 00:07:25 And I wrote that even though rookie of the years already wrapped up, he'll now get MVP votes and he is a lock now for the Pro Bowl. You know, on that day two, the team won their 10th game, which made it then very possible over the final two against Atlanta and Dallas to win their 11th. Of course, they went on to win both of those, but the 11th win was the first time they had won at least 11 since. 1991 and it also put them on the verge of clinching a playoff berth. They just had to win one of the final two to clinch a playoff berth. And it was even possible that they could lose the final two and still get in. But yeah, Jaden was unbelievable that particular day. What a game that was. And just looking through, you know, the notes, you know, obviously like I have, you know, things that I like, didn't like that whole thing.
Starting point is 00:08:27 You know, he was number one on the list. Number two on the list was Hertz leaving the game. And I wrote that that was the most impactful moment of the game because it changed the game so much for Washington. Washington's defense. They had already planned to load the box to stop the Eagles rushing attack. But it wasn't working until Hertz left the game. And Pickett came in and Pickett just wasn't the run threat. that hurts was.
Starting point is 00:08:58 But yeah, unbelievable game, you know. And yes, there were moments in which they got fortunate. You know, Devante Smith's dropped for sure. And that would have ended the game for all intents and purposes. And the Cornelius Lucas play, there's no doubt. It was a bit of a false start on the play. It's funny because the last two touchdown passes in that game. game were to Zekees, no longer on the team, and to Jameson Crowder, no longer on the team.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Zekees was the leading receiver that day, five catches, 70 yards, and then Terry was five for 60, but then Diami Brown, four for 56, and Crowder was two for 15 with two touchdowns in that particular game. But, yeah, I mean, the rushing yardage outside of Jade and Daniels, Brian Robinson, Jr. 10 carries 24 yards, 2.4 yards per carry. Chris Rodriguez, 3 for 5. Jeremy McNichols, 2 for 3. Washington's other running backs, 15 carries for 32 yards, just barely over 2 yards of carry. You know, that was the case down the stretch just too often that the entire rush offense was about what Jay did as either an option runner, a designed runner, or as a scrambler. He ended up, by the way, in that game, even with two interceptions, he ended up with a 96.3 QBR, which was his best during the season. That was his best QBR, 96.3. He was over 90 several times,
Starting point is 00:10:55 during the season against Cincinnati in week three, Arizona in week four, and then in the postseason against Detroit in the 45 to 31 win. But that Philadelphia game was crazy. And yeah, I mean, you know, you could go back to the Thursday night first matchup. Philly was the better team that night, even though Washington held a fourth quarter lead. And then we've gone through the championship game a bunch. Look, they got good fortune in several of their wins, but the good fortune was coupled with a quarterback who played out of his mind in most of those games.
Starting point is 00:11:39 So this guy, Jimmy Kempski from the Philly Voice, wrote another dumpster fire story today. But this one about his Philadelphia Eagles. 10 reasons the Eagles will be a dumpster fire this season. Before I get to the list, let me just mention that a few weeks ago, and I don't know if it was with Tommy or it was with someone else or if it was solo, I sort of contemplated a step-back season for Philadelphia. First of all, we all know that in the NFC East, there hasn't been a repeat winner since 2004.
Starting point is 00:12:19 But man, the Eagles were great, and they're raw. is incredible. But the reason that I mentioned Philadelphia could take a major step back was Sequin Barclay and his health. Because Sequin Barclay, over his career, going back to his rookie season in 2018, with the Giants, he's missed a bunch of games. Injuries were always in issue. Last year, he was healthy the entire season. The year before that is last year in New York, he missed three games. The year before that, he missed one, the year before that he missed four. The year before that, he missed 15 games.
Starting point is 00:13:03 The second year of his career, he missed three games. He has always had injury issues, which has caused him to miss games. So, look, Philadelphia went to the Super Bowl three years ago without Saquan Barclay. And, you know, if Sequin Barclay weren't on the team and they had another decent back, they'd still be a good team. But Sequin Barclay rushed for 2005 yards last year. I mean, he was unbelievable. He had the best year of his career by far. You know, even average yards per carry 5.8.
Starting point is 00:13:40 13 touchdowns he rushed for. He had 33 catches, too, for, you know, another couple of touchdowns in nearly 300. yards. Anyway, back to this guy, Jimmy Kempski's 10 reasons the Eagles will be a dumpster fire this season. Well, reason number one is the Eagles put a lot of mileage on Saquan Barclay in 2024. He writes, including the playoffs, Saquan Barclay got an astronomical 482 touches in 2024. That was the third highest number of touches in a single season since 2000. I'll tell you the other two that had more here in a moment. There have been 17 players who have had 430 or more touches in a single season during that span, meaning since 2000. And then he puts
Starting point is 00:14:35 the list together. This guy does a lot of homework in these columns. He writes, you know, the list of the 17 players that have had 430 or more touches since 2000. And he looks at the yards per carry during the great year or the heavy load year and then what the yards per carry were the following season. Now, the only two players to end up with more than 482 touches during the last, you know, 25 years, DeMarco Murray in 2014 with Dallas and Eddie George with the Titans back in 2000. So anyway, of these 17 players, three, just three, increased in yards per carry after their heavy load year. One remained the same.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Ten had a decrease in yards per carry. Five decreased by at least a full yard per carry. And three more decreased by at least a half yard per carry. Three guys didn't even play the next season. there was a retirement, Ricky Williams, there was an injury, Jamal Lewis, and there was a contract dispute, Levyon Bell, back in 2017. But as an example, like DeMarco Murray, who had the most touches of any running back during this century, he was 4.7 yards in 2014, 3.6 the following season.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Eddie George's big year in 2000, he went from 3.7 yards to 3 the next year. Larry Johnson, 2006, had 475 touches, 4.3 yards per carry to 3.5 the next year. The biggest drop was in 2005, Sean Alexander, who was the MVP in 2005, Sean Alexander, who was the MVP in 2005, went from 5.1 yards per carry in 2005 to 3.6 yards per carry the next season. Now, Sequin Barclay has an unbelievable offensive line, an unbelievable supporting cast all the way around. But to me, and it's not the reason that Kempski wrote about it, to me, injury, because he's got a history of it. could be the thing that really derails another great Philadelphia season. By the way, they picked up in the offseason A.J. Dillon to back up Barclay, but they also had,
Starting point is 00:17:27 remember, in that rookie year last year, Will Shipley from Clemson. I loved him coming out, and I thought when he did get opportunities, which were few and far between, he was great. In fact, didn't he have pretty sure he scored the last. touchdown in the NFC championship game against Washington. I'm pretty sure. Didn't he break a long run there at the end to make it 55 to 23? Let me just look it up real quickly. No, he had a two-yard touchdown run.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Oh, he had a 57-yard run to set up, yes, that last touchdown of the game to cap off the 55 to 23 win. Four carry 77 yards for Shipley. in that NFC championship game. He's actually really talented. The Eagles took him in the fourth round last year. But, yeah, if they lose Saquan-Barkley, they're not the same team, obviously.
Starting point is 00:18:27 So getting back to the 10 reasons the Eagles will be a dumpster fire. A lot of mileage on Saquan-Barkly, and there's a history of heavy load running backs declining in average yards per carry in the year after that big load. The second reason, they also put a lot of mileage on Jalen Carter. Jalen Carter played the second most snaps in the NFL among Interior Defense of Lyman last year. He had over a thousand snaps. There's a 100-plus snap difference between Carter and the next guy on the list.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Zach Allen in Denver had 1,031 snaps. Jalen Carter had 1,027, and then Kobe Turner with the Rams had 919. And Jimmy Kemsky writes, there were concerns about Carter's conditioning heading into 2024, but he put those to bed. However, the new concern is that overuse could compromise his effectiveness. Okay, I mean, they have a lot of depth. but reason number three, they lost a lot of starters, especially off of the defense. Kemsky writes, the Eagles lost five defensive starters, one starter on offense, and a handful of other key contributors.
Starting point is 00:19:53 The list includes Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner Johnson, Brandon Graham, and Orrin Burks off of the defense. They lost Mackay Beckton. offensively. And then he writes, Nkobi Dean, who by the way was playing pretty well when he got hurt in the postseason and I think missed the Rams game, the Washington game, and the Super Bowl. Vic Fangio apparently recently said
Starting point is 00:20:23 he's not coming back anytime soon. So that was a serious injury that he suffered in the postseason. Now they've added guys, you know, they added Hunt. They added O'Jolari, Keeley Ringo, Adori Jackson. And remember, you know, secondary-wise, they had Quinyon, Mitchell, and Cooper DeGine, who were rookies. So, you know, and they're, you know, as well coached as any defense in the league. But that was reason three, the number of players that they've lost.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Reason number four, they've got a very hard schedule. Well, you know, that's what you have when you're the, defending Super Bowl champion, and you won a lot of games. Now, remember, there's not much difference between NFC East teams. You know, of the 17 games, there are only three that are different. The three games that are different with Philadelphia versus, let's say, Washington. They play Tampa, the Rams, and Buffalo. We play the Falcons, Seahawks, and Dolphins.
Starting point is 00:21:33 So they do have a tougher schedule with the Bucks, Rams, and Bills being the three opponents that are different. Reason number five, they start slowly. Well, they started slowly last year. They were two and two, and remember, they got blown out in week four in Tampa, but they were a shell of themselves. They were missing many key players, including both A.J. Brown and Devante Smith, I believe. But Jimmy Kempski writes, they start slowly. Number six, Jalen Hertz has yet another new offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach. Entering his sixth NFL season, Jalen Hertz will have his fifth OC in six years.
Starting point is 00:22:24 That's amazing, man. Had Kellyn Moore last year, had Brian Johnson, who's on Washington staff in 2023. he had Shane Steichen for two years in a row in 2021 and 2022. This year replacing Kellynne Moore will be Kevin Petullo, who was a promotion from their existing staff. So you would think things won't change that much. He's also got his fifth QB coach in the last six years. Brian Johnson, by the way, for two years was Jalen Hertz's,
Starting point is 00:23:01 quarterbacks coach. Reason number seven, they had incredible injury luck in 2024. The Eagles, I didn't know this. They were the second healthiest team in the NFL in 2020 for per Aaron Shats. They only had three players who were unavailable for the Super Bowl against the Chiefs, Nukobi Dean, Britt Covey, their wide receiver and returner, and some fullback, who I've never heard of. Only Dean was a key contributor. in the regular, you know, season and in the, you know, the postseason before he got hurt. Kind of remarkable, but very likely unsustainable, writes Kempski. Number eight, the kicker.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Remember Jake Elliott and the season he had last year? I mean, this was a great kicker. And last year, I mean, he missed some against us. In 2024, he was 28 of 36 on field goals. 77.8%. So there's a concern about the kicker on Philadelphia's roster, but they did not bring in any other kickers. The number nine reason Philly might be a dumpster fire in 2025 is just there hasn't been a repeat NFC's champion since 2004. I've talked about this before, that it's not just that the that won it the year before didn't win it the following year.
Starting point is 00:24:35 But the team that won it wasn't the favorite. Now, that doesn't really apply to Philadelphia, but everybody that thinks that Washington just is ready to ascend a division champion doesn't always work out that way. You know, Washington on their three division titles during this stretch, 2012, 2015, and 2020 went from last place the previous year, to first place. But the Eagles are a
Starting point is 00:25:05 pretty hefty favorite to win the NFC East and become the first team to repeat in 21 years. And then lastly, number 10, they're going to get everyone's best.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Okay. Yeah, the Super Bowl champions always do. You know, it's funny, on their list, on the list he put together for the Eagles, To me, it is about Sequin Barclay and him having the same kind of year that he had last year, which will be almost impossible to duplicate, him having health, which he has not had consistently during the course of his career. The starters, they lost. And, yeah, the coordinator offensively changing again.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Those are the things that I would look at with Philadelphia in hopes that, you know, things break against them on those fronts. And maybe the kicker will stink as he did last year. All right. This guy, I have not read the 10 reasons the Cowboys or Giants will become a dumpster fire. Maybe we'll get to those next week. Or maybe that'll be it. I think that'll be it. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Let's take a break. when we come back, Joel Corey, to talk about Terry McCloran's contract, Jaden Daniels contract in two years, and a lot more. Starting point is 00:28:57 86690 Nation, windownation.com, if you're thinking about new windows. All right, joining us right now is Joel Corey. It's been a while since we've had Joel on the show, former sports agent, and he is for CBSports.com, their NFL contract and salary cap expert. at Corey Joel on X on Twitter. So you know this situation going on here with Terry McLaurin. So let's start there. How and when do you think this gets resolved? How does it play out here over the next few weeks?
Starting point is 00:29:37 I suspect this gets done right around the time training camp starts at the latest. Dan Quinn had a very good approach at the mini camp when he said, something to the effect that this is one of those times where football and business intersect. He's just rolling with the punches. So I anticipate that he'll be there, if not the starting training camp, a couple days thereafter. I'd be shocked that this ends up being one of these long, drawn-out contract disputes. So what do you think the deal looks like when they get there? Well, to me, it's a very narrow range.
Starting point is 00:30:15 one, if the commanders are below T. Higgins, that's a non-starter, and I would be insulted if I'm Karen McLaren because T. Higgins is the number two receiver. Top of the number two receiver market is 28.75 million per year. It might be a number one receiver if he got into the open market and was playing someplace else, but in Cincinnati he's the number two receiver. All number two receivers aren't relevant. Now, I wouldn't be paying more than C.D. Lamb, C.D. Lamb is a better receiver. That deal was done last year. That's at $34 million per year. That I had $100 million in guarantees, $67 million fully guaranteed at signing. The most recent relevant data point to me is D.K. Metcalfe. Metcalfe in his trade from Seattle to Pittsburgh signed a somewhat bad
Starting point is 00:31:12 backloaded, four-year extension, averaging just under $33 million per year, where the Steelers can really get out of it after two years and paying $60 million. That being said, I don't really see a deal that gets done below Brandon I.U. That was the guy who sees younger signed for $30 million per year, four-year extension last year with San Francisco, $76 million in total guarantees, $45 million fully guaranteed and a small narrow range. One of the problems is age, because you're talking someone who's going to be 30, really the early part of the regular season in September, and D.K. Medcaf is two years younger.
Starting point is 00:31:55 You don't really have a lot of comps for 30-year-old receivers that work in this case. So that's probably the biggest hurdle. From the team standpoint, do you see this being, you've done so many of these, and you've watched some of these, you know, so many of these. play out. I thought right from the beginning, like you, it's going to get done, but it's tricky because of his age, as you mentioned. And the other part is kind of determining what Terry McClureen really is. He's clearly a number one, but where is he on the list of number ones? Do you think that that's a part of this negotiation as well? And I'm curious as to where you think he ranks among number one
Starting point is 00:32:42 You know, if the agent is thinking or Jamar Chase just became the highest paid non-quarterback, there's a big difference or gap between where Justin Jefferson is and where Jamar Chase is, and I need to narrow that gap. That's got to be a non-starter for the commander. We're talking 40.25 million versus 35 million. I don't know anyone who wouldn't take those two guys over Terry. So if he's thinking that range, he's going to have to readjust expectations. There were six, I think six receivers last year who were named to the all-pro teams by the Associated Press, the official one.
Starting point is 00:33:29 He was one of. He arguably had a career year last year. One thing that he can point to is look at the rotating casks, of characters he's had throwing him the football until last year. It ain't pretty. There hasn't been quarterback's stability. It's been mediocrity, and he's
Starting point is 00:33:49 been very productive. He's outproduced D.K. Metcalfe, at least that's what the agent's going to say. Now, from the team, I'm looking at it. Well, D.K. Metcalf, although the productivity lags a little behind, he has some rare trait.
Starting point is 00:34:05 The guy is 6-3-2-40, a physical freak in nature, great speed. So I would be using that to try to depress where this is going to go if I'm the commander. It's not besides the age. Yeah, I mean, I get into this all the time with my listeners. I love Terry. Terry's a true number one receiver. But it's a position that is so, so packed with star receiver.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Chase and Jefferson are in a different class. I mean, if you want to throw, you know, A.J. Brown into that conversation, go ahead. You know, Metcalf, kind of like A.J. Brown is, you know, a big, strong guy that we've seen dominate games at times. That's not necessarily Terry. So, you know, the age, and then it's like, where is he? Is he around 10? You know, is he plus or minus 10? Is he the eighth best receiver?
Starting point is 00:35:04 Is he the 12th best receiver? and then you get into age and then you look at the contracts, and I think there's some trickiness to it. But you think it gets done and you think ultimately it looks like at the very end of this, how many years, what gets guaranteed and what's the average salary? Well, I don't think there's a deal that's under $30 million per year because the question I would ask, hoping if I didn't get the answer I wanted to be a problem, since Adam Peters came from the 49. He knows what Brandon I.U. can and can't do. So my question would be, who would you rather have?
Starting point is 00:35:44 My guy or Iuke? If he says Iuke, we got a problem. But it's going to be, I say between, it's going to be north of 30. I don't think it quite gets, it's not going to get to CD Lamb 34, if I don't think so. It doesn't really matter how many years you do because it's not going to be, he's not going to sign another contract. At least it's a big money one. This is his last big one. But here's one other thing you have to keep in mind.
Starting point is 00:36:09 The commanders cannot really stick a franchise tag on him next year. It's going to be too cost-perhibited because of the way the 120% of prior-year salary works. When you say prior-year salary, that's really salary cap number with a couple of minor adjustments. Now, you can't pin down the exact amount of what his tag is going to be because he has that $250,000. pro bowl incentive, which will get added back in after the calculations, if he's a pro bowler again, so it would be likely to be earned. But the way the calculations work is going to at least be $30.2 million. It could be $30.45 million, and then to franchise him a second time, you're talking slightly over $36 million.
Starting point is 00:37:02 So you wouldn't franchise him. hypothetically say you did in 2026. You wouldn't do it in 2027 because another 20%. So he has a little bit of leverage from standpoint. You've got to get something done with him. Also, you're in Winnow, though.
Starting point is 00:37:18 You have a cheap quarterback you don't have to pay for a couple of years. So if you actually have to overpay a little bit for your most productive skill position player, then so be it. Well, I think the guarantees you had 60,
Starting point is 00:37:34 fully guaranteed it's signing for Metcalf. So he's probably going to be looking for that. The last 20 of the guarantees for Medcaf are injury only, given that C.D. Lamb is it 67 million fully and 100 total? Maybe if you can go to the 60 fully and the 80, which can become fully guaranteed, not just strict injury, guaranteed it might be in that range. You know, one of the things as you were talking through the franchise,
Starting point is 00:38:04 tag. The one thing that would be a benefit for the team, and I'm not suggesting that they would go down this path, is just cash outlay. I mean, they're only paying one year at a time. They're not, you know, they're not guaranteeing. It's not 60 at signing and then another, you know, 20 beyond that guaranteed in escrow. And the only reason I bring that up, Joel, not that I really believe this is an issue. But they paid $6 billion and needed 20 plus limited partners to do it less than two years ago. They've put nearly $100 million into the existing stadium. They've got a massive expenditure on the stadium that they hope ends up at the RFK site. And in two years when they can pay Jaden Daniels, that's likely to be the biggest contract in NFL history, or at least it's possible.
Starting point is 00:38:56 So I was, you know, I'm curious if you gave that any thought, you know, as to whether or not I'm, this would be the biggest cash outlay they've given for a player since they took over the team, Terry's contract. I mean, would something like that even be in play in your mind? Not over 30 million in the franchise tag, because that would be a lot for receiver. It's not going to be the formula amount. It's going off his salary for cap number. The cap number this year is $25.5 million. There will be some minor adjustment to that, but I don't know if they want to carry him at 30 next year on the cap. That's the problem.
Starting point is 00:39:41 Yeah, good point. So that's why I think he's got a little bit of leverage there. Now, one thing you could look at is a way to try to get this thing done is the deal, current extension, the 3-E extension average $23.2 million. the cap's gone up 34% since then. So if you adjust to deal for salary cap inflation, you're just to shade over 31 million per year. Right. So what do you think Jaden's going to get in the winter, early spring of 2027?
Starting point is 00:40:10 Well, that's kind of hard to predict right now. One, he has to continue to build upon what happened this year. You once had a quarterback who won rookie of the year. had injuries and wasn't the same guy. So I'm going to caution a little bit until I see year two. One, I want to see there's a guy down, not too far down the road. I'm curious to see when that contract gets done. He's another dual-threat quarterback.
Starting point is 00:40:40 Lamar Jackson. Yes. And CJ Stroud, he kind of had a, took a slight step backward last year from his rookie year. He has been to the playoffs two straight years. So another strong year. The Texans aren't afraid to pay top dollar. So I don't know where that one comes in. A guy depends on where C.J. Stroud, how he plays next year.
Starting point is 00:41:12 But is that Stingley, Derek Stingley, Jr., contract is the indication. The new money is $30 million per year, which dramatically reset. the quarterback market, then you could have a seven in front is the first digit for Dave Daniels. Yeah. So I don't know how closely you follow the entire roster, but who's first in line to get paid next off season? Because they don't have to pay Jaden until 20, 27 at the very early, through him. So I don't know how closely you follow the over. overall roster here, but given that they don't have to pay Jaden until 2027
Starting point is 00:41:57 at the earliest, who's next in line, next off season? Who do you see getting... Well, first guy that comes to mind and start to cut you off. Laramie Thompson. Tunsell, of course, yeah. You brought him in to be the left tackle,
Starting point is 00:42:13 protect Jaden, Daniels. That's going to be the guy you have to pay. I'm surprised he hasn't pushed for it. this year. Typically, if you give up significant compensation for someone and you don't get the deal done around the time of the trade or not a big lag time, you usually end up paying through the nose for that type of guy.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Now, the one exception for that has been Russell Wilson. They did the deal two years early, and they were to have been. better off waiting, but you saw in Seattle more is more compensation than this council trade, but with Jamal Adams, they didn't get it done immediately the following
Starting point is 00:43:03 off season. They had to reset the safety market. Right. The first time around wasn't done in conjunction with the trade. And he became the first $20 million per year offensive linemen. That put him in position to be the first
Starting point is 00:43:18 $25 million per year off offensive linemen. So you probably want to get deals done when you give up significant compensation. They give a lot more for him to go to Miami to Houston and this time around, nonetheless, still pretty significant. You probably want to get these types of things done sooner rather than later. That's what history shows. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:43:42 And what's interesting is if it doesn't get done until, you know, next off season, again, I wonder whether or not, you know, the massive cash out. outlay is appealing to them right now. But anyway, you know, Tunsell was, you're right, that was the obvious one. What about a guy like Louvre or anybody else on the roster? Like who, after Tunsell next year? Yeah, he'd be going into a contract year, so he'd make a whole lot of sense to redo. He came in, played really, really well next to the future First Ballot Hall of Fame or Bobby Wagner. Well, you may have, Debo potentially, I'm not all that optimistic about the impact he's going to make because he hasn't been the same player he was since he got paid.
Starting point is 00:44:36 So I don't know what he's going to do for change of scenery, but let's say Devo looks more like the Debo that's been the one that we've seen since he got paid, then you may have to make a decision on him. He's going to be an unrestricted free agent, so who knows? Maybe it's a case where the market isn't where you think it's going to be,
Starting point is 00:44:57 and he's willing to come back after getting humble. It all depends on what happens this season. They can play great for all I know, but I'm not holding my breath on that. It is a contract year. What are your thoughts overall on Washington entering year two of Jaden Daniels after their best season in over 30 years last year? Well, you're doing what you should do when you found the quarterback and he's cheap.
Starting point is 00:45:25 This is your window. So you are in win now mode because once he becomes expensive, you can't pay everybody and it gets a lot harder to sustain success. the Texans went all in after C.J. Strauss rookie year in terms of bringing people in doing extensions. So yeah, this makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:45:49 I just kind of jokingly thought we were going to see the Bobby Bessor, George Allen type thing. I'm going way back where you give away all your first round thing for the next three years. Yeah. But it didn't quite get to that point.
Starting point is 00:46:02 But nonetheless, you bring in Lattimore to shore up in need a corn, during the middle of last year, I'm giving him a mulligan because of the hamstring injuries that we'll see more of what we thought he would be this upcoming season. You've got tussle coming in. You bring back some of the season veterans who played at a very high level. Debo on the trade.
Starting point is 00:46:28 Yeah, it's now or never, but you'll still have an extended window. If Jayton Daniels is who we think he is going to be. on a go-forward basis because that's the hardest piece to find, the quarterback. George Allen, in his time in Washington, his first year they had a second round pick, and then the highest first pick in a draft after that was a fourth rounder in 1977.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Yeah, he basically said... I was dating myself to even bring him up. Well, you're talking to somebody who remembers the era. Real quickly about the rest of the league, what happens with Trey Hendrickson? That's the most interesting one of all to me, because Michael Parsons will get done. Jerry likes to drag his feet and eventually will pay someone top dollar. I anticipate T.J. White gets done. So I'm not overly concerned about that.
Starting point is 00:47:30 When it took right until the start of the regular season in 2021 and he had a hold in to get it done, If I'm Cincinnati, I would have paid him before T. Higgins. I know Higgins and Jamar Chase have the same agent and agent leverage the duo together, but I still would have franchised Higgins to trade him and paid Hendrickson because you have one legitimate or top-flight defensive player. He's it. He was the pass rush. He was responsible for almost 50% of the sacks on the team, which is crazy.
Starting point is 00:48:12 He's one of four guys ever to have consecutive 17 and a half sack season, defensive player of the year runner up. The thing is you saw the market change dramatically. First with Miles Garrett leveraging his unhappiness into, here's enough money to make me want to stay, becomes the first $40 million per year non-quarterback. That was right after the ink was barely dry on Max Crosby going to $35.5 million per year. Then DeNeil Hunter gets a one-year extension at $35.6 million.
Starting point is 00:48:46 So you got all that factoring in the equation. What is two months older than Henderson? Yeah. I try to beat that yield to the market because let's say he gets a three, four-year extension. And it's up there near the top of the market. that just complicates things for Cincinnati because Hendrickson's like, yeah, you can't hold my age against me and saying I'm too old to get more than a short-term one, two-year extension
Starting point is 00:49:14 if Henderson gets three and four when he's been outperforming in the past couple of years. So Cincinnati looked like they were turning the corner a little bit, getting receiver deals done. And now you have the dynamic of the first round pick. They're haggling over minutia in the... addendums about language and how the guarantees void. Right.
Starting point is 00:49:38 After Sam Hubbard retired, so I'd have a pass rusher on the other side either. Seems like things get done when the assistant general manager intervenes and kind of put the thumb on the scale, and that's Joe Burrough. And so if I'm trained in Mr. Yeah. I'm putting a bug in Joe Burroughs ear that you need to be. as vocal about my getting my deal done as you were for your receivers because they could score with the best of them last year. That wasn't a problem. They couldn't stop anybody. When you know
Starting point is 00:50:14 you've got one defensive player, you really have to worry about, that's the guy you should take care of them. Yeah. And it feels, doesn't it, like this is, you know, a season in which they've got to win. They've got to get back to the postseason and make a run. And they're not going to do it with a defense that's worse than last year's defense, which it would be without him on it? Well, the big problem is they always start slow. You have all this contract drama last year of Jamar Chase. You lose to the Patriots in the season opener. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:49 So you put yourself behind the eight ball. You start playing well. They're a team that I don't think anyone wanted to play had they gotten in the playoffs, but you got to get there first. Now you got more contract drama. if this thing drags out with him, and it seems like it may have gotten personal. And any time it gets personal with the player, they may be willing to take extreme positions they wouldn't have otherwise. And you have a problem with your pass rush you drafted in the first round.
Starting point is 00:51:17 If those things don't get resolved relatively quickly, it may be more the same another slow start. We'll see if they can overcome it and make a playoff run. And if they don't, we'll be able to point back to what happened over the summer and not getting things done if these guys as being the other reason it's the playoff. You know, it certainly sounded like leading into the draft, you know, when they gave them permission to seek a trade, that Cincinnati was looking for, you know,
Starting point is 00:51:44 it was reported at the time first and probably a night two pick. Well, I think Washington was one of the teams interested but thought the price was too high. I'm curious as to what you think. If it came to the point where they just, hated each other's guts and they didn't want to do a deal, and they decided to trade him right before camp. What would they get for him now?
Starting point is 00:52:10 Well, to me, you can't trade him now because the whole idea would have been, we need to get someone to come into play this year. You're basically putting on the season if you do that. Well, they did pick an edge in the first round, even though he hasn't gotten his deal worked out yet. Yeah, but one who's more of a problem. and someone rated his height because he wasn't all that productive in college. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:52:35 But here's the hypocrisy of it. If you want a first round pick plus, then that's the value for him to trade him. Then if you're not going to trade him, that shows that he's extremely valuable because you put a high price tag on him to go somewhere else. So there should be a corresponding high price tag on him to stay in terms of salary. Right. All right, last one. Washington doesn't have an obvious pass rusher. You know, last year they had Dante Fowler Jr.
Starting point is 00:53:12 who had 10 and a half sacks. You know, it might come from somewhere else, but there are still guys out there like Zadaria Smith and Jadavia and Clowny and Von Miller and Matthew Judon. Is there an edge out there, a veteran edge pass rusher, that you think it would be worthwhile? for Washington to go after and pay? I'd stay away from Von Miller, too many injuries.
Starting point is 00:53:40 I know he got a hit at Sackinson of late in the year. Clowny seems to always get pressure, maybe not sacks. He might be worth investigating. J-DON until last year, it looked pretty good. So maybe one of those guys, not what I'd want to do, but it's not going to happen because you don't make trade within the division is try to rent Kvon-Tibodot for a year. But I don't think, I think the Giants are happy with three pass rush or rotation.
Starting point is 00:54:13 So I don't really see them trading in particularly if in division. Or maybe you kind of wait and go to the regular season, see what you have. And if your pass rush isn't quite there, you try to investigate a trade during the season. These guys who are out there, the older vets, they don't really want to go to training camp. anyway. So they really want to sign if enough time to get ready for the regular season. So that'd be mid-August or so. And maybe one of those guys was like, all right, I'm just ready to play football. The market wasn't anything close to where I thought it would be even after they've waited. And you can get one of them on a pretty cheap contract. Thanks for doing this. Really appreciate it,
Starting point is 00:54:58 Joel. Take care. And, you know, hopefully you're right. And the Terry deal gets done before camp. Thanks for having me. Joel Corey, everybody. We'll finish up this show with how the Wizards finished up the 2025 draft last night, right after these words from a few of our sponsors.

Starting point is 00:58:29 with how the Wizards finished up the draft last night. They had number 43 overall, the 13th pick in the second round. Real quickly, before I get to Jemir Watkins, the player they selected. If you're interested, I had Will Dawkins, the Wizards GM, on the radio show today. He was really good. I've had him on before. He's excellent. It was about 17 to 18 minutes talking about Will Riley and Trey Johnson, their two.
Starting point is 00:58:59 first round picks and more than just the players. It's at the Team 980.com. It's in the first hour of the show. You can also, I think, watch it. We stream the radio show now on the Team 980s YouTube page. So, yeah, Will Dawkins was excellent. I also had Monica McNutt on the show. I'm a fan of Monicas and have been for a while.
Starting point is 00:59:25 I think we had Monica on the show a few years ago, a few times. in fact. But it's been a while. Not because I haven't tried. It's not like I've tried a lot, but she's busy usually during the radio show in particular doing a lot of the ESPN shows, you know, the Greenberg show, the Stephen A show. She also calls Nix games. She's one of the analysts on the Nix broadcasts on radio. But she's a DMVer. She grew up in PG County, went to Holy Cross for high school in Kensington, North Bethesda and then played at Georgetown. And she had the job on Wednesday night and last night of interviewing the players and the
Starting point is 01:00:10 players' families or significant others right after they got picked and after they had been on stage taking a picture with the commissioner with typically the wrong hat on. And I thought she did a phenomenal job. And I mentioned this, I think, yesterday. That is a hard thing to do. And it's a hard thing to do because the players themselves are 18, 19, 20 years old and they are incredibly emotional after realizing, you know, in many cases, a lifelong dream. The parents or the others that are by their sides are typically inexperienced in getting
Starting point is 01:00:50 interviewed. They're nervous. And they too are very emotional. And, you know, you just don't know what. you're going to get. And it's just not an easy, you know, 30 to 60 seconds, sometimes a little bit more. But I thought she did a great job and she was really good on the radio show with me today too. So two things, if you have time to go listen to from the radio show, Will Dawkins and Monica McNutt. All right. Now, as far as the Wizards second round pick, remember this was the second round
Starting point is 01:01:24 pick that they got when they traded back with Utah in the first round on Wednesday night. The second rounder that they had earlier in the week, they traded to New Orleans as part of the Jordan Pool deal. But they selected Jamir Watkins. I knew very little about Jimir Watkins, but I immediately, when they selected him, pulled up, you know, a highlight package. And immediately, it was like, this dude can guard. He's six-four. 222. He's got a seven-foot wingspan. His arms are super long. And it's like a bunch of the highlights are him just picking people clean. You know, with those long arms, he's a really close physical defender. And if you expose the ball or you spin, he's reaching and knocking it away and picking it up and
Starting point is 01:02:18 going down and dunking on the other end. That's what he's known for. He is a defensive player. at the combine, he made, you know, a huge impression with both his size, physicality, his intensity. That's something that is a common theme among the three players. You know, Will Riley, Trey Johnson, and Jemir Watkins are all high-motor, high-level competitors. But, you know, another wing. I mean, they don't have many bigs on the team next year. Free agency is coming up. We'll see what happens.
Starting point is 01:02:54 I don't know that that's really the focus, though. You know, the focus is on all these young players and getting them time. But I have to say that after watching Watkins and the highlight package, listening to a couple of people talk about him, I think they had a good draft. Now, he's older. He's going to turn 24 next month. So he is not, you know, 18, 19, 20, 21, which is basically, you know, the core of the 10, team that they hope will turn into something two, three years down the road, you know, along with, you know, the class next year and maybe the class in 2027 as well. But I was a big
Starting point is 01:03:38 Trey Johnson fan, as I talked about before the draft. That's who I wanted them to take. By the way, have you been reading about Ace Bailey? You know, a lot of you really came after me, which was fine. It's fair. Look, who the hell knows about anything related to these players? But Ace Bailey, I just didn't have a good feel for based on his game at Maryland. And this pre-draft process that's gotten a little bit sideways today with him, you know, apparently not being on the plane with Walter Clayton Jr. headed to Salt Lake. A report was that Ace Bailey and his team, his agent, essentially told one team in particular in the top five that he would not play for that team.
Starting point is 01:04:25 Many believe it was the Utah Jazz. I don't think Danny Aange or his son care. Now, there is a late afternoon report that he does plan on reporting to the Jazz. He's got a report to the team because they start their training camp for Summer League on Monday. So we'll see.
Starting point is 01:04:47 But look, he's talented. There is no doubt. out. But there was just an overall, I think, you know, reluctance for some teams, which is why he went fifth instead of third. I mean, he was projected going back two years to be a top three pick. We'll see. He's very talented and he's very young. And if there were a few mistakes made as a player at Rutgers or in this draft process, he's got plenty of time to bounce back from them. And he's going to a pretty good situation in Salt Lake where they're, you know, they need them and they'll give them a bunch of playing time there as well. But I like the
Starting point is 01:05:26 Wizards draft. I really did. I think they did well. I'm a big fan of Tray Johnson. I really, you know, I talked about Will Riley a little bit before. The more you read about Will Riley, you know, there's this idea. One of the things that Will Dawkins told me this morning was that Will Riley had he gone back to Illinois, he would have been a top five pick next year. He would have been a much higher pick than where the Wizards got him at 21. So long way to go in this process, you know, it's a long way to go. I was looking at the all-too-ear-to-ear mock drafts for next year just to see where they had the Wizards picking. Well, CBSSports.com and ESPN.com both had the Wizards with the number one overall picks.
Starting point is 01:06:17 So, you know, having one of the three worst records, but then maybe getting lucky in the lottery. And the player that has emerged now in what is expected to be a very good draft next year, especially at the top, is Darren Peterson, the best high school player in the country. He's going to Kansas next year. He's a 65-66 point guard with a 6-10, 6-11 wingspan. people are really excited what he is going to do next year, Kansas, and many people have him pegged as the number one pick in the draft. For a while now, Cameron Boozer, one of Carlos Boozer's twin sons, Carlos Boozer, of course, a star Duke. Cameron and his brother are both excellent players, but Cameron's headed to Duke. he's projected to be the number two or number three pick behind Peterson, at least as of now. But look, the Wizards are going to win, you know, 20 to 25 games next year.
Starting point is 01:07:21 And they're going to end up in the lottery, and they're going to have a chance to get, hopefully, you know, a player that can turn the franchise around. And maybe one of those players was one of the three they just picked. Who knows? Yeah, that's it. But the Wizards, by the way, if you didn't know, they are willing. loaded with picks. You know, Oklahoma City, the defending champs, they are loaded with picks for years to come. The Wizards in 2026, as of now, have two first rounders and eight second round picks.
Starting point is 01:07:57 Now, the first rounders, you know, have some protection rights in there, swap rights in there. So, you know, as long as they don't finish outside of the top nine, they'll loan their own pick, which will be, you know, hopefully. hopefully a high lottery pick. But in 26, two first rounders, eight second rounders. In 2027, they have their own first rounder. They have
Starting point is 01:08:19 eight second rounders in 2027 as well. 2028, they have projected two first rounders and four second rounders. In 2029, they've got two first rounders, four second rounders. And in 2030, they have
Starting point is 01:08:35 two first rounders and a second rounder. they have, and they're doing what Oklahoma City did. I mean, Will Dawkins came from Oklahoma City. They are, you know, bringing in a hall of draft choices for the next several years, and that will give them flexibility, along with their cap flexibility that they'll have next offseason after the trading of Jordan Poole and bringing on C.J. McCollum and Kelly O'Linnock, who have just one year left on their respective deals.
Starting point is 01:09:07 but, you know, they're building in a ton of flexibility with picks. Those picks could end up being selections or packaged together to, you know, bring in the next Shea Gilgis Alexander, perhaps. Who knows? It's going to be interesting to watch the Wizards over the next few years, but we're still several years away from, you know, playoff contention, from them actually trying to compete to win the most games they can win. All right, that's it for the day.
Starting point is 01:09:43 Enjoy the weekend back on Monday. This is fourth down and extra long here. Fourth and 11. Daniels steps up. Daniels needs inside the 30 with his legs. He'll get it. Jayden Daniels, a first down and more to the 11.
