Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, guys, this episode is brought to you by Tea Public. You guys know Tea Public. I've been with Tea Public forever since the Shmowdown days, since the big thing launched. If you have a Sith Council shirt, if you have any of our shirts, you got them from Tea Public. From over the years, we've been working with Tea Public. When I went out on my own, they were one of the first calls that I made. So not only can get all of the branded merch from this show, T-shirts, stickers, phone cases, mugs, all that. When you are on the site, do a search. You're going to discover something that you
Starting point is 00:00:32 like, especially in this space, man. An artist uploads new work to the Tea Public Marketplace every five seconds. Because of the thousands of global artists that populate the marketplace, you're going to find designs you won't find at a big box store, especially if your interests are super niche. It doesn't matter what you're into, you can find it on Tea Public. You want a graphic tea of a cat riding a unicorn? Check. A t-shirt with your favorite movie quote? Got it. You want merch for the big thing? Hey, that's what you want, obviously. I've been using T-Public forever.

So I'm happy that they're on the show. show. Their sponsor in the show now, T-Public, everybody. Check them out. How's it going, everybody? Welcome back to The Big Thing Show. It is the spoiler-heavy review for episodes one and two of Asoka. Now, the way I'm going to do this normally for the rest of the
Starting point is 00:01:44 season, after I watched the episode on Tuesday night now, I'm going to do an immediate reaction to it. I'll put it up on the channel, and then on Wednesday morning, I'll have my spoiler review and then followed by the Big Thing slash Shift Council review that most likely Mike and I will be doing until the strike is over. But for this week, because I've already seen it, Mike wasn't available. I figured I'm just going to kind of combine it and just do episodes one and two in a full Big Thing episode.
Starting point is 00:02:10 So today I'm going to be covering everything on Asoka from episodes one and two, my thoughts on it, where I think it's going to go, all that and more. So if you're brand new to the channel, you've never been here before, you want to catch up on all the Asoka stuff out of the theater reactions we do and more. Please help us out.
Starting point is 00:02:26 We're almost at 90,000. We're going to be there very soon. We want to get to 100. We need you guys to help us out. So please do that. Apple Podcasts, Spotify, anywhere podcasts are found. All right, guys, it is Asoka. It's the big thing.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Let's do it. Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. It is the big thing. And the big thing this week, Asoka. Damn it. Sokatano has her own show. And I had a chance. chance to see it early last
Starting point is 00:03:03 week. They did a screening of it and it's funny because I was talking about this. Sometimes, well, for Filoni and Favreau show they normally don't send press screeners rather. You know, with the links and you don't normally get on, and where they sent them like two weeks earlier or whatever it was, but for the
Starting point is 00:03:22 Faloni-Favro shows, you usually get them the same time around like, I don't know, 12 a.m. When they drop normally for everybody. So there was a screen, a screening at the El Capitan Theater, which is a significant traffic. It's a bit.
Starting point is 00:03:38 But I wanted to see it on the big screen. I wanted to go and check it out. And Kalanowski and I went to it. We did it out of theater reaction. And it's funny. I was sitting there. And then the notification came in through the email that they had sent
Starting point is 00:03:49 the screening links to the press. And at first I was like, oh, man, I could have stayed home instead of driving all the way over to this thing. And contrary to people's belief, I don't like going to events and all these other things because I'm, I like staying home. But nonetheless, I wanted to see this, and I definitely wanted to see it on the big screen. That's what I realized when I was sitting there.
Starting point is 00:04:13 I was like, you know, as much as I would have loved to watch this, the comfort of my own home, it's fun to watch Star Wars on the big screen again. It really is. And this movie played, and you can tell, this is a very expensive series. You can tell that. And you can tell from how it looks, how it feels, Everything about it. It really, really, you can tell the production, they spent the money on it is where sometimes it looks like Obi-Wan, I don't even know how much they spent on that one.
Starting point is 00:04:40 I know Andor costs more, and you could tell. Obi-Wan costs less, and you can tell. But they put the money into it. And it starts. I mean, everybody's been talking about it, and rightfully so. Kevin Kiner's music is the star of the show overall, just from the opening credits and how it starts out. and you're like, okay, as it opens up, it's kind of eerie music. But my favorite thing that right away when it started was the freaking crawl, man.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Now, it's not the traditional crawl. It's not the one, you know, going up in the storybook fashion, but who cares? Who cares? It was a crawl. And it's like they were listening and they finally did it. I don't know if they're going to start doing this for a while now, but it certainly worked for this. And it certainly worked for those people. who aren't really caught up on the rebels lore and just,
Starting point is 00:05:31 this is just the beginning of it, but the evil galactic empire has fallen, and new republic has risen to take its place. However, sinister agents are already at work to undermine the fragile peace. A plot is underway to find the lost imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn and yada, yada, yada, yada. And right away, you're like, okay, let's do it. And I gave an audible yes when I saw it because it was like, man, do you know how long we were waiting for something like this?
Starting point is 00:05:56 Because it's Star Wars. It felt like it, it immediately put you in that feel of, all right, we're back into what a kind of traditional Star Wars is and that feel of it. And it just felt right. And you can tell there was a lot of the kind of, this had a very original trilogy feel to it, but in the reverse where you have the ship alone, when you open it up, it's got a very new hope style to it. And we're getting this new Republic ship. And I love that we get the protocol droid right away. and we have this new the new republic
Starting point is 00:06:30 they're in charge right now so here's this guy who's you know just floating around and here's what ship is this? And they're like, well the code code's Jedi and he's like I don't know about that Jedi someone's trying to pull a fast one
Starting point is 00:06:44 he takes off and as he's walking through and this is where this moment of and you see that the ship in the background this piece of music too by the way when the ship lands and the the smoke's coming out of it and this is kind of like the Sith hum of what Kiner does here. It's just beautiful.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And we get our first glimpse of the late great Ray Stevenson, and I hate saying that because I hate that he's gone. I really do. He's such a tremendous, tremendous actor and gone way too soon. But he shows up, and it's like the reverse of the episode one, right, where Quygon and Obi-1 show up and on this ship. And it's just so, it just felt right. It just felt right.
Starting point is 00:07:31 And there's two of me, he's like, okay, thanks for letting this on cap. We're good. I appreciate you. Cap's like, uh, not so close. Dillhole, where are you going? Nice try. I'm going to, let me stop you right there. And I'm not buying it.
Starting point is 00:07:47 And I love what Baylon looks at him and goes, I don't understand. He's like, let me see your credentials. It is our credentials. And then I, I'm digging. I'm digging the. I am digging the apprentice. She kind of got a Scarlett Johansson thing going about her. But it's like silent, says things, you know, when she does, it's impactful, has questions about what's going down in the mission in general, listens to her master, still has a lot of things.
Starting point is 00:08:16 You can still see that bit of the search for approval. but she's and and I believe every second when she's kicking people's asses. The great casting, great casting. I think she's phenomenal on what she's doing so far and great dynamic with her and Ray. So love this cast and didn't know, I'm still crossing my fingers hoping that they don't do the cliche turner good. You don't need to. Let her crave the power and they say it down later on. Like what does that mean for us?
Starting point is 00:08:51 they just immense power. Let the two of them crave power. And I like that that Baylon has a little bit more to him than just the just wanting power. Of course he does. Of course he wants, you know, he's greedy, he does all that stuff, but there's more to him.
Starting point is 00:09:07 And I like that we're learning about that. He knows the history. We learn a little bit more about him through the two episodes. But really like the casting overall so far what's done here. So, yeah, they just mow through these people with no no problem at all.
Starting point is 00:09:23 And this was a very kind of, this was a mixture of the original trilogy or rather New Hope and then Rogue 1. Because they're just mowing through people and toss them around. You know that they're no joke. And he says to the captain up top, turns around and says, you're right about
Starting point is 00:09:41 one thing. We're no Jedi. Now he gets it through the back. No protocol, I mean no protocol. No medical droids are helping him out. Lightaber seems to doom him. And so my one big criticism in this show, and I guess it's Star Wars in general, stop letting people be stabbed by lightsabbers and surviving. It diminishes the lightsaber. You can have them get slashed on, you know, hit on the shoulder.
Starting point is 00:10:05 If something happens, when limbs get taken off, things like that, but getting stabbed, it should be fatal. I don't care if it's to the side or not. Stop this. Riva and Sabine and all this. Stop it. It diminishes the lightsaber. effect. But it's a very small criticism thus far
Starting point is 00:10:24 as I really enjoy this show a lot. But we get the captain, he ain't getting no help from, no help. He did. He did. They don't care. They're walking. These angles, too. Flanio does a great job directing this. You can see that he spend
Starting point is 00:10:40 hours upon hours upon hours days and weeks doing the storyboards for this thing because a lot of this stuff is like typical Faloni. You can see the animation of it too. Now this is where there's one thing in the trailer when they popped out that I was
Starting point is 00:10:57 dead wrong on and there was something I was dead right on. Something that you guys both gave me crap on for a lot of it. One I'll admit that I was wrong and then I hope somebody will tell me that I'm right that said I was wrong. But this is one I was wrong on. I thought
Starting point is 00:11:13 in the scene where Apprentice comes in, kicks some ass, I thought that this woman was imperial. I said, oh, I still got some imperial going on there. Didn't I? Didn't that? Is that what I said?
Starting point is 00:11:26 Yeah, I said imperial. I said, that's an imperial. What's happening? And they, I was wrong. So definitely a new republic. And then this is, this was the part that was very rogue one, new hope as Baylon is just walking through. And so take this for what you will, right? There was a report going around for a while.
Starting point is 00:11:50 And Freddie Prince Jr. had said it on Barstool, I think. That Filoni directed the scene with Vader. It was... Gary Witt has said, no, that's not what happened, but Freddy stands by it. And nonetheless, let's say hypothetically. Let's say hypothetically, that's exactly what happened. Well, you can see remnants of that scene
Starting point is 00:12:15 or a parallel rather because this is very, very similar and I loved this scene so much. I loved it. I love when he's walking through and as he opens the door and Morgan's there and she says, he's true to your word. He's like, I'm well paid for it too. Let's not forget that.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And I loved that already. I love them setting up this dynamic between them and loving that she's kind of running the ship and we don't need to know a lot about Baylon right now. And I also think what's really smart about opening with this, because there's a lot of people that are concerned about the rebels connection, right?
Starting point is 00:12:52 And if I haven't watched rebels, I'm going to be lost. Well, if you're watching this scene, I don't know who Baylon is. I know Morgan from the, from Mandalorian. So that, so far, starting with that makes me go, oh, well, who's that? That's interesting. I don't know anything about this. two and and and the familiar cloaks and i'm i'm feeling i mean the opening already i'm feeling i'm ready in the star wars universe with how they set this up and the other thing that i would push
Starting point is 00:13:22 back on with people who are thinking that it's too connected to rebels as i watched it again um because it's clearly connected to rebels it's clearly another season but as far as being confused and things too like what's the difference of watching episode four for the first time and hearing you know i i was once a i was i was i once fought in the clonel Wars like your father did. And the whole story about the Clone Wars and talking about that whole backstory. And there's a lot of backstory in episode four. There's a lot of backstory. It's stuff that we don't know what the hell. Who's that? I'm supposed to know who that is. I know what the Clone Wars were. And I'm supposed to know who his dad was and this. And they set it up really well. So
Starting point is 00:14:03 if you're working on who's Ezra, I don't know who Ezra is. Well, you'll find out. That's what it seemed like. Because there were stuff, there was, as I went into it, I was saying to my myself, okay, are there going to be a lot of references to things where people are going to go? Well, they reference that thing and that needs to be seen in order to make sense. And I don't think it does. I think it makes, I think you'll have to ask like, well, you won't have the same kind of connection. That much I definitely agree with. That you won't have, like I have watched all rebels.
Starting point is 00:14:33 So to me, I felt very differently than someone who's never seen it. when Sabine hits the scene for the first time or Hera comes in or chopper pops up right like when chopper pops up I'm going oh there he is as opposed to someone's like who's that you don't get lost but you're just not as connected if that's the argument I get that and I understand that but the confusion side of it I think that they did a really
Starting point is 00:14:58 good job of setting up the show to where you're not where you shouldn't be confused at least that's how I felt and I'm sure I'm going to hear tons of it in the comments of whether or not you agree or disagree, and I can't wait to read them. But I'm curious. I'm very curious to see, because I think, again, this opening was just extraordinary. Great opening.
Starting point is 00:15:19 And as he gets Morgan out, and she basically tells him, you know, we got a problem here. I love the little criminal jumpsuit. It's amazing. And as she's walking out, she's like, Assoca, he's like, who's this Jedi? Assocato, right to the title. Great start. And this is the part that I'm hoping that somebody that gave me some crap gives me some credit. I'm hoping.
Starting point is 00:15:45 So I think you deserve it on this one. This was a – this, by the way, is a classic feloni shot. I can see him – I can see him drawing it. And it's a perfect shot. Here is a great intro to our hero, and even the background of the statue where she is. And when we saw these in the trailer, as she goes down – and this is the other thing. They showed a lot, and this is kind of classic on what they do. They show a lot of the trailer shows episodes one and two, which I love,
Starting point is 00:16:15 because they don't give away a lot of stuff. There's a couple of shots from some of the other ones, but not so much. This move that she does to get herself into the actual temple was incredible, but here, now this is a harder thing to see because it was darker, but as I was watching the trailer, I said, oh my gosh, that looks like one of the witches of death of me. No, it's just a Jedi. You're wrong.
Starting point is 00:16:39 I'm telling you, that looks like a witch, Adathimir. That doesn't look like a Jedi. That looks like one of the witches. Confirmed. Which is Adathir. And that's where the map is. And it also turns out that Morgan is indeed a descendant or, as she says, a survivor, the witches of Dathema. So then Asoka, she finds the map.
Starting point is 00:16:59 She's able to do it. And this is another thing that I, going back a second time, I love, the length of this episode. I love it. It's 52 minutes or whatever it is after credits, maybe 50 minutes. I don't know. It doesn't matter. The whole episode had enough time to marinate. It had enough time to get us situated with the characters. And there were some people who saw the pacing was off a little bit
Starting point is 00:17:22 and thought that there was some, it was a little slow. I didn't feel that. The only time that I, when I was watching it back, I'm like, okay, maybe there's, we could have gone maybe a couple of shots less. and just wrap this part up a little quicker. She could have gotten the map a little quicker, right? She's doing the puzzle pieces, and she's doing all of that, and it takes a little bit.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I didn't mind it, but I can understand the argument for it, where, okay, maybe you just speed this scene up a little bit as far as the pacing goes. So I get that. Okay, so now here she is, and she's popping up, like, okay, well, everything's good. Well, not really, because now these droids are coming out. These droids kind of remind me of grievous as service droids,
Starting point is 00:18:08 but it's a battle, and they have a fight through it, and we see Asoka, and she's as badass as she was. And some people have been talking about Rosario Dawson kind of playing a one-note, very serious Osoka, and it doesn't have that kind of fun personality, and this is where I'm kind of going to go against a little bit of what I've been saying in the past about other characters, where I'll have this conversation notably with my buddy John Hoey, right?
Starting point is 00:18:35 and I had this conversation with James Parny when I saw him at a screening. The reason I have such an issue with, well, I'm not such an issue, but I just don't buy Alden Aaron Reich as Hans Solo. I think he's a great actor, and I think it was a great performance, but I think it was a different character.
Starting point is 00:18:51 It was before, it was a lead-up into what we, it was an evolution into the character that we saw, but it just didn't have, if you went back and saw a version of yourself at 10 years old, you still see hints of you. you still see hints of who you are and what you're what that that essence is there and in my opinion that essence wasn't there for him now the flip side of this is I look at myself at you know 19 years old and I definitely have more of a kind of a silliness vibe about me more so than I do now
Starting point is 00:19:22 so Assocato as she was very silly when we first met her and she gradually became more serious and all the crap that she went through, it's kind of gone. I know people that were super, super fun 10, 15 years ago, and they're serious shit now. And they don't crack jokes anymore because they've been through it. So, and as much as I don't, and that was, well, that was a, that was the big issue with Luke.
Starting point is 00:19:52 And the difference with Luke is though, again, in my opinion, is that Luke just completely changed altogether. and some people, that's what people liked about it. But if you, for me, for me, I think she's doing a fantastic job, and I like this portrayal of Asoka very much. And she gets through this battle. Here's the, the droids.
Starting point is 00:20:18 She's, you know, doesn't really put much of a sweat, to be honest. But she's cutting off heads left and the right. But then these things know, like, all right, maybe it's time for this, blow ourselves up. Because we ain't taking her out. And it's a great scene. David Tennant as the droid, the Jedi training droid or whatever, he's been around in the Clone Wars. You guys tell me his name.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I'll figure it out there in the season. Don't start, come. Oh, his name is this. Do you research? No. But it blows up. This shot, too, this is about as Asoka as it gets. People listen on audio.
Starting point is 00:20:47 It's when she's leaping onto the ship. And she tells the droid, she's like, don't, don't land. And I think he's great. I think David Tennant is an awesome, awesome addition to this show. I think that the droid is a great addition to the show. And again, this is the emphasis that I put on Star Wars humor. There is Star Wars humor in this. There is Star Wars humor in this.
Starting point is 00:21:12 And it's not jarring. It doesn't feel like Marvel humor. And again, I'm not taking a shot at Marvel. It's just they have a very specific thing that they do and that there's sometimes that it just feels so jarring in Star Wars when they're just trying. Well, put comedy in there. We need comedy. The comedy comes with the droid when.
Starting point is 00:21:29 at the one point when he's talking to Harry is like, of course you're saying blow it up now, you're not here. That's the stuff that always works for me in Star Wars humor. And I think he has a great thing to it, even when he tells Sabine at one point, he says to her, all the,
Starting point is 00:21:43 the Padawans I've ever seen, you have the least amount of connection to the force. And he doesn't, in such a droid way, it's like, it doesn't feel like, oh, they're just going for the joke, just feels like this is, you're sitting there in the room, you'd be like,
Starting point is 00:21:57 he didn't realize the way he said that, That was funny. And that's the kind of stuff that I think it's subtle and it works. And there's other things that... And the stuff that worked with Sabine when she's on the top of the... She's supposed to be there for the ceremony. And Clancy Brown's like, where is she? And then he's like, you tell the speech.
Starting point is 00:22:15 And the guy doesn't know what he's doing. He's got to tell a speech. Like, I like stuff like that. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's what I like. So I guess I'm not wrong if I like as far as what I like. I might be wrong as far as saying that you like it.
Starting point is 00:22:28 But I don't know. What do you think? All right. So we move on and we get Asoka's, this really did distinguish the relationship between these two and how they work together. And it's a good pairing. It's a good pairing for sure. But they get the phone call.
Starting point is 00:22:49 There's an issue. Hera needs them. And here we go. And we got our first glimpse of Mary Lewinsted as Hera, as we show up. Now, this is kind of the moment what I was talking about, right? So, like, if you guys are watching for the first time, you've never seen Star Wars Rebels,
Starting point is 00:23:07 and Harrah shows up, you go, okay, who's this? And it's like, okay, this is going to be a new character, probably one of the main characters, if I'm going to guess. If you're a Rebels fan, you go, yeah, there's Harrah. No, there's no mention of her son yet. But right now, she shows up, and she lets them know, hey, man, we've got some issues. We had Morgan.
Starting point is 00:23:30 We don't have her anymore. These two dirtbags. They wrecked shop. They took her. And they got powers like you do. So we might have issues. So what are we going to do? And they talk about the map.
Starting point is 00:23:43 They talk about this. And I love the idea that I love the voice of reason that herra has already. She's always been in the animated series. And she quickly is being established again to people right away. You see her calm demeanor, how she is. It's very relevant to how she was in the show. And she's like, well, you know, I'm pretty sure I know someone that can help us. And it's a great introduction to get back to, or to introduce, rather, Sabine to the new series crew.
Starting point is 00:24:11 This shot, by the way, I love. I love this shot. And again, for the audio listeners, it's bailing in the hologram form kind of doing a choke. And then The Apprentice is just leaping with her saber, kind of orange saber. and as they're looking at it. It's a phenomenal shot. I love it so much. So like, all right, here's this map.
Starting point is 00:24:33 I think I know who can help us out. She's like, oh, all right. And you get this kind of backstory and the Montcalamari running the ship as they should be. And then we jump to Lothal. And I love seeing Lothal in the live action form. It's liberated now.
Starting point is 00:24:51 It's healthy after everything that happened. So again, For people who were watching this for the first time, you just kind of see this planet, but you get a little of the backstory where Clancy Brown is saying thanks to these heroes, and he mentions Ezra Bridger, and you get a mention of him. So that way, if you're watching it, you're going, oh, okay, Ezra Bridger, I guess that's somebody I should know. And for Rebels fans, you're going, they're really acknowledging everything that went down.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And one of those other heroes that was part of that, Sabine Ren, nowhere to be found. And then this poor bastard has to go and give a speech. and probably did, you know, eight minutes of stand-up comedy. From the look of it, he probably ate it. So he tried, took a shot. Clancy Brown, you elevate your show anytime you put Clancy Brown in it, whether it's a voice, whether it is a performance. No matter what it is, Clancy Brown's going to elevate your show.
Starting point is 00:25:43 I love Clancy Brown. And Clancy Brown has been working with Dave Filoni for quite a while. He's done the, what was it, the Clone Wars, he's done rebels he's done the Mandalorian and now he's here and I hope again
Starting point is 00:26:01 he stays good only because he's played bad guys in so many different things and obviously I think of Shawshank right away but he's so he's so good at everything that he does that to play and he looks like
Starting point is 00:26:17 kind of even when he's looking for Sabina she comes back later and he's like where are you super pissed off about it he said where are you? And then he tells you you should listen to what she's going to say. He's kind of like almost a father figure it seems but
Starting point is 00:26:32 loved having him in it and I thought it absolutely elevated it for sure. So by having Clancy Brown he's just like anybody do me a favor find Sabine. Now this has been one of the, there's always a scene that people are talking about for good or for bad, right?
Starting point is 00:26:48 And this scene is the introducing of Sabine and here she is comes flying through and there's this rock music playing and i'm not going to lie to you that when i saw it in the theater i'm like what the hell is this and then i listened and i was like oh i love the alien rock music i love it i love and it's different than the return of the jedi he balls out of the bang it bong see the thing thing this was it worked for me it worked for me the great nerd chronic who did um who was an editor for the movie trivia shmode on a show that we did for a long time he was a one of like kept the show alive with
Starting point is 00:27:27 his great promos during the pandemic but he put out something on his Twitter or whatever the hell it's called now and it was he he substituted that song the alien rock song with with sabotage from the Beastie Boys and it's i ever tweeted if you want if you want to check it out on my on mine you can see it it was great um but anyway i loved this scene it was a great scene and it's a good introduction to Sabine and it played well where she just she just doesn't she doesn't need she doesn't need to be at the ceremony she doesn't want to she just wants to take a ride and i it felt lethal man i felt with all the whole time i was watching i was like this feels like lethall and i and this guy great great star wars mustache well done um he's like listen you got to come back and she's like no i think i'm
Starting point is 00:28:14 good and there's this and i and again the scene was they're like you're going to have to stand down So they park the X-wing, they go, all right, let's call it, let's call it a day. And she goes flying through, zips pass, and I love this look of respect that this guy's like, all right, fine, we're going to leave me alone, get the hell out of here. And we get more of Sabine's kind of layout, where she is now, and kind of how she's been troubled for a bit. They got the Loathcat, that's another one that plays in really well. And then she brings up, and we have Ezra.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Now, I guess this could be another thing, and this isn't fair yet. This is inferior. This is me, and I can acknowledge this, too. This is why I push back on people when they go, don't have expectations because you have expectations. You'll be let down on things, and you shouldn't have expectations. You should always have expectations. You shouldn't fault the show if it doesn't necessarily meet your expectations.
Starting point is 00:29:08 You can be disappointed. You can be disappointed if it doesn't meet the expectations. But if they do it better, you should be able to acknowledge it, right? So one of the things here, I was really hoping from Mina Musad. as Ezra. And this is, again, not fair to the new actor that they got. I just, this is a hologram, so I don't know yet, but from watching a hologram, I'm like, I don't necessarily know if this plays the same way that I remember Ezra from the show.
Starting point is 00:29:38 I think that Sabine does. But I don't know yet. I think Hera does, but I don't know yet. This hologram didn't sell me, but again, it's a hologram. they could and I don't think this cat is showing up until the end of the show anyway so I don't know but I was like I and maybe that's just because I was like I was hoping for me to massage this guy could be the best casting decision at anything Star Wars related but as I was watching I was like I don't know I'm not sure if I'm buying him yet as Ezra but it was a hologram but I don't know I could
Starting point is 00:30:15 definitely be the only person feeling that I'm curious what you guys think as well. But the more important thing is that it's kind of, it's torturing Sabine. Her intention is to get Ezra back, to find Ezra. She needs to find him. She wants to. She had a close connection. He sacrificed himself and she feels like he's out there.
Starting point is 00:30:36 And then we get the apprentice again. And this is what I was talking about before. And this is where I think she starts to shine a little bit, where she's just not kind of going blindly into it. She's like, wait a minute. You're a witch? And she's like, I'm a survivor. I was like, oh, like, I love, like, what is this place and looking at all these things and bailin coming.
Starting point is 00:30:55 I mean, this is the three of them, this is when I kind of look at a show, Star Wars or whatever it is. There's a time, as I mentioned, I think recently I did a short, and I was talking about Obi-One. And again, my issue with Riva was not the performances by Moses Ingram. It was the writing of the show and the idea that I think that the character of Reva could have been set somewhere else and done justice better to both the actress and the character because my point is when you're looking at that show, you're so fixated on finding out how tortured Obi-Wan is about finding his apprentice and finding that moment of Veda. one, Obi-Wan once thought as you did. So when you get to that last scene, the last moment in Obi-Wan, and it's bouncing back and forth between Baru and Owin and Reva, you're like, who cares?
Starting point is 00:31:57 Wrap it up. Let's get back to Vader because you're not invested in that storyline as much, and you don't care as much. That is not the case, at least for me, with this show thus far. Every time they cut to whatever storyline it is, I'm locked in. So if they're on the Sabine storyline, I want to know what's going down. If it's Asoka talking to Hera about her past and how she ran away and all that stuff, I want to know more about it. If it's these three lunatics, I want to know more about it.
Starting point is 00:32:25 I want to know more about Baylon. I want to know more about Morgan. I want to know more about the apprentice. I want to know more about them, more, more, more, more, more, more. That is good Star Wars writing to me. That is good pacing. That's why I'm thoroughly opposed to those who say that the pacing, is not good. I felt that the pacing's been the best out of any Star Wars show in quite a bit.
Starting point is 00:32:47 And, well, and or people didn't like the pacing in and or either. They thought it was too slow. I like, I like marinating in the Star Wars lore. To me that this is, this is what we're supposed to be doing here. So this is when they have the conversation. Send this one. Send her, send her to go find out what's going on. Send her to get the, to get the map. So they go to find, and this is, and this is, and this is, and this is, and this is, and this is, and this is, also great backstory too because Sabine sees Asoka come in and she knows shit's going down and this is the scene I mentioned before where the first time they had seen each other apparently in years from what Sabine says and it's a good setup for us as well, Rebels fans and non-Rebels fans. It allows us to know, oh, well these two have a relationship.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Sabine who was essentially the protagonist of the last season of Rebels. had more relationship with Asoka where Asoka took her on as her Padawan, and as Asoka has done, and admittedly so, she kind of walked away from it. She does that. She admits that's one of her biggest flaws. She kind of steps away from things when they're not working. She doesn't stick around. She leaves. And I love that flaw, and I love that they acknowledge that.
Starting point is 00:34:05 And I love that there's just kind of like, there's this teacher-student thing of just there's animosity there. And this is why Clancy Brown says, you're going to want to listen to what she has to say. So don't get too upset, easy. And again, loved what Clancy Brown brought to this scene. So she tells about the map, and we know from those people who don't know in Rebels, Sabine is a very, very good.
Starting point is 00:34:36 She's a tech genius. So this is exactly why you want to go to her. So she gives her the map, or shows of the map rather and we start to get into really the main dilemma of what's about to go down so before we move on to it thank you guys for joining me on the show today
Starting point is 00:34:55 really appreciate it if you're brand new to the show and you just want to check out the Asoka reviews I'll be doing them all all eight of them for sure we do tons of Star Wars stuff we normally cover Star Wars pretty heavy on our Wednesday episodes anyway so again thank you for subscribing one of the things that people always ask is hey I've been watching show for a little bit. I listened to you on Spotify. It helps me on my drives. And I wanted to
Starting point is 00:35:15 help with this show. I wanted to, you don't do super chats, you don't do streamlaps, like what, how can I support? Well, we have sponsors. We have great sponsors. And I walked in and my mother-in-law is just laying on the bed.
Starting point is 00:37:01 This is so comfortable. It's amazing. And my kids want to lay on. It's super. It's just, you just kind of sink. into it and it's just so comfortable. All right, there is a Labor Day sale going on right

Very excited to have them for a sponsor. If you're looking for a new mattress and you've been looking for a new mattress, please consider them.
Starting point is 00:37:53 I'm loving it. The picture you saw was from my place. That's my mattress. It's before we put the sheets on. That's after we put the sheets on. That's everything. I love it. And I'm very excited that they're on board.
Starting point is 00:38:05 So please consider them. And not only will you be super satisfied, you also be helping out this show. So use the link in the description. Please go and check it out right now. All right, let's move on. So they're partnering up. Asoka and Sabine, they're getting back. And then you can tell that there's some history on this ship
Starting point is 00:38:22 because as we know that Sabine is an artist, and for those who didn't know, she did these drawings. And you can tell that there was some history of her on this ship. And it's a great job here of you can just tell in her eyes that there's some history. And there's some fond memories because it's like, It's a look of warmth. And I think Natasha Liu Bordizzo does a great job.
Starting point is 00:38:45 I don't know if I pronounce her name right, but I hope that I get it right soon. I think she does a great job, really great job, in portraying kind of the history here with just a look. Some of my favorite acting has done, no dialogue, just a look. So they have this conversation again. Can you get this thing working, man? What do you think?
Starting point is 00:39:04 And she said, well, let me take it. Let me go take it home. And I'll say, no, you're not taking it. stay here. There's still not a lot of trust there or whatever, too. So just chill out, relax, and I'll be right back. And she does. She's going and she's talking to the droid.
Starting point is 00:39:22 And this is when we find a little bit more about bailin. And I love this scene. She'll say, well, check this out. This one light saver, I don't know what the hell this is. I don't know who this is. I've never seen this before. But this one, this one here. I haven't seen in 500 years of training in Padawans.
Starting point is 00:39:43 I've only seen one other person do this. And he says it's bailin. And he disappeared after the Clone Wars. And we haven't seen him since. So they're formidable. Be careful. Love it. Great setup.
Starting point is 00:39:58 Great scene. Gives you a little bit more about Baylon. Okay, he was a Jedi. And he took off after the Clone Wars. After the end of the Clone Wars, he said. So the question is, at what point will we get more? that we've seen in the trailer that he's got more history and he knows more stuff, like how much more will we reveal?
Starting point is 00:40:15 And that's what I loved about these first two episodes of this show. As I said, am I out of the theater? And I said, am I non-spoiler? It feels like it's a full fleshed-out story that from start to finish has, it feels like a movie. And then each piece, and even though I know the third episode is 32 minutes, and I think that stinks. But I do feel it's going to be a piece of a puzzle
Starting point is 00:40:38 that adds to where they're going and what they're doing as opposed to sometimes they certainly did it in a Mandalorian season three and they've done it in other episodes of different shows and they've certainly done it in rebels and other things too
Starting point is 00:40:52 where there's episodes a bad batch to do it all the time and it's like okay here's an episode of a show that the story is really moving and then some side adventure and you're like oh that kind of relates to it but it felt like a throwaway
Starting point is 00:41:05 it's not really a throwaway it's not really a filler because it kind of plays in a little bit, but for the most part, it's a filler. This so far, in two episodes, fair, only out of eight, though, feels like a setup for, especially when you end the episode of two, and you're like, oh, well,
Starting point is 00:41:23 they're clearly going to find Thron now, and this is when the juice starts. It's a great setup for one and two. That's why I wish three was like an hour. It's only 32 minutes. Nonetheless, Asoka gets her information now about who she's going up against, They're two formidable opponents, so be careful.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And then she goes back out to talk to Sabine, and to nobody surprise, Sabine grabbed all the stuff and left. Now, I think Asoka should have probably known better to leave her with the map. Maybe she was hoping, but nonetheless, it's gone. So Sabine races through, staying true to the character, and this is a very Darth Mall, episode one type scene, and we get the apprentice. She shows up.
Starting point is 00:42:10 She's got the little probe droid, and now she's ready. And I love that she's in the brown. It's not in the black. Sith, it's in the brown kind of Jedi robe. And then now this scene. Now this scene is another one, right? Some people are going to,
Starting point is 00:42:24 this one I didn't mind. People might say it took a little too long for her to put together the pieces. But again, pacing to me worked. She takes a bit. She has to find out. She has to figure it out. He just doesn't just like jump into it and like magically figure it out.
Starting point is 00:42:38 She has to work the problem out. And she's got to figure it out. This is what she does. This is what she's always done. The tech stuff works for her. It always has. And then you jump back and forth and now this is what I was talking about before with Hera and Asoka where her is kind of like this voice of reason. And we get this moment from Asoka where she's just like, I ran.
Starting point is 00:43:00 I bailed. I did this. And it's like it's not working. It's a reason why. And she's frustrating. He's like, weren't you frustrating? He's like, yeah, I never finished my training with Anakin because I bailed on him, I did this.
Starting point is 00:43:09 And you see it's weighing on her. And you see that it's been a thing that has been continuously a problem with her, but it's also the reason that in her mind that she's survived as long as she has because she's been able to just kind of bail. And it sets up this moment, these moments between her and Sabine
Starting point is 00:43:27 because she cares about her greatly, obviously. But it's also this frustrating thing she had. And one of the reasons she feels, maybe this is why I shouldn't, of trained her because she doesn't listen and she is impulsive and she does all these things. And then it's her going just hang in there. I'm telling you, this is, we're supposed to be doing this. She took the map and then you get back to her.
Starting point is 00:43:49 She's working on the map. She's looking and then she pieces it together. She's like, wait a minute, wait a minute. I got this thing. And I love this whole thing where you see, you don't, she doesn't necessarily know kind of what it is, but she sees this, oh, this is kind of where they are. but she doesn't know the plan again and she puts kind of the data through
Starting point is 00:44:06 and starts to put it into her system and the Lothcike goes, hey, something stinks and it's this freaking robot. S.K.D. And the thing comes in and she's kicking the piss out of it for a little bit but there's two of them and one of them grabs it, takes off, runs and she's just blasting it.
Starting point is 00:44:24 And you do, there is that thing where you're like, oh, if you just wouldn't have taken the map but the same part, you're like, well, yeah, but she needed to go there because that's her space at the same time Asoka probably I wish they would have said well you know what I got an idea
Starting point is 00:44:39 come with me come with me to my place and I'll try to work it out there and you can hang out with the loath cat pet his belly do whatever you're going to do and I'll try to figure this thing out but I need my space because if they're there together and then Osokic can fight off the HK droids
Starting point is 00:44:53 and everything else and then problem solved but they're not on the same page kids and that was the issue so the HK droids are able to come in, do their thing. And then we get that. And I love that. She says, hey, I need help here.
Starting point is 00:45:12 So the tenant droid comes in and he says, hey, we got an issue. So she's, this is great. Now, this is, I love 99% of this right now. And you guys already know the 1% that I don't like. But Sabine comes out. and here's your apprentice ready for her, tells the droid beat it, or just stay here while I fight this kid.
Starting point is 00:45:38 And the battle ensues. And it's like the orange lightsaber versus the green. And it's a great lightsaber fight. It's not over the top. I buy every second of it. They both look like they know what they're doing. And for people going, oh, how is Sabine trained in the arts? Again, watch Rebel.
Starting point is 00:45:53 She fought with the dark saber for quite a bit. Canaan trained her. She's got skills. She knows how to fight with a saber. So I loved seeing it And I also love that as she said later on My training just isn't super Complete yet obviously
Starting point is 00:46:07 And it's a great battle between these two It's a really good battle and it shows the skill of both the apprentice and of Sabine And they hold court And it's a I love that shot with the green saber with Ezra Sabre They battle it out And then Assoca's like I gotta get back and help this kid And moving as fast as she can And the battle ensues
Starting point is 00:46:28 And I love this kind of kind of back and forth. This is a great shot, too, of this. They've used this shot in a few different Star Wars things, but I think it's just, it's very, very, it's just epic. It's just, the swords clashing. Now, Sabine to me, is fighting with a little bit more rage, which is probably another reason why it didn't work out. It's not as much clarity, but that's a cool shot, too, and it didn't seem sticky, like, oh, let's do flips, let's do this. I feel like, no, I could, I could see the power here on what's happening. And as As Soka's desperately trying to make it back, trying as hard.
Starting point is 00:47:02 The droid trees, it goes, right, we got it. We got a split. And this, this is my least favorite part. Instead, hit her on the side, bonk her on the head with the force, throw her against something. Stop stabbing people with lightsabbers. Riva gets stabbed in a lightsaber.
Starting point is 00:47:22 She's fine. Pretty fast. Sabine gets stabbed at a lightsaber, medical droid. Well, then where the hell were these medical droids for, Quigone. Well, you go stab somewhere else. Cut it out. Just stop getting stab a lightsaber's.
Starting point is 00:47:37 There's no reason for it. As I said in the beginning, it diminishes it diminishes the lightsaber effect. He said, oh, now when you see someone get stabbed with a lightsaber, well, they're probably going to survive, which sucks. Every time you thought that someone got stabbed with a lightsaber, like it's over.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Because even Mike Kalinowski, you know, she did? And I remember thinking myself, no, of course not. Because it's Sabine. And all So apparently you can survive from light stabs stabs now. Now you're going to, the difference between the captain in the beginning and Sabine was clearly when you look at it, she's getting stabbed towards the side, didn't hit any vital organs. I get it, but it diminishes it, in my opinion.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Now, I'm curious that people feel the same way or not, but I just think you could have gotten the same effect. I think it's necessary for her to get really hurt. I think it's necessary for her to lose a fight. I think it's necessary for her to be in peril because it really, it, it, it starts the whole second episode. So this, I understand why they did it. I just think the stabbing of it was a little, I don't know, I didn't love it. And then she doesn't, but I do understand, this is the one thing,
Starting point is 00:48:52 people are like, well, why didn't she just slash her down here? Well, she's still fighting. She's still fighting. and she's trying to survive. And the apprentice looks up, she goes, well, if I slash her down right now, this ship is five seconds away from landing, and that's five seconds I don't have. And that's the shot right there.
Starting point is 00:49:10 She's like, I got to get out of here. I can either finish this person off or I got to and risk it or I got to bail. And she makes the right call. She bails. And we end with Sabine. She's out. And that's it. That's the last shot of episode one.
Starting point is 00:49:26 Don't worry. We're going to get it to episode two in a minute. But great setup. Now, you know, she's not dead because Sabine is obviously for two. I mean, if you're a Rebels fan, you know she's not dead. Because there's just the whole scene that we'll get into in a little bit that they show it in the end of Rebels, that they reenact in episode two. So you know she's not dead. But it does put us in a place of, well, the bad guys have won this round. They have the map.
Starting point is 00:49:53 What do we do next? Again, a great setup to the first episode that I think gets you invested. I think it really gets you invested. And it locks you in. And the music is just next level. As I said in the out-of-the-the-the-the-the-reaction, and I've said it many times over, and I tweeted about it, and I'm going to keep beating this drum.
Starting point is 00:50:14 When John Williams retires officially from doing Star Wars, movies, and everything else, and he might already have, sometimes if he'd say, I want to come back, He comes back. John Williams is going to do whatever he wants to do. But once that is done, and John Williams decides he never wants to do it again, Kevin Kiner should be the only person doing music for Star Wars. He really should be. He should be the official composer for everything Star Wars, everything.
Starting point is 00:50:43 The guy just gets it. He just gets it. I know, I think his kids help him as well. The Kiner family, they just get it. they make original music the original music plays in that they do that feels
Starting point is 00:51:01 like it's part of Star Wars already and it's got it's got Williams tones to it it's got there's times that you hear you're like oh that sounds like the beginning of episode four oh but it's different there's a socus
Starting point is 00:51:15 theme there's this there's a new thing there's that even the alien rock music it's there's no question He's the only person that should be doing it right now. Now, people are, what about Ludwig? Ludwig was great. Ludwig was great.
Starting point is 00:51:29 I love the Mandalorian's theme. Love it. He didn't do season three. Loved his theme. And I thought it worked for that old Western thing. And I think it's fantastic. But it stands out as far as like a Western theme. It almost sounds like Rocky.
Starting point is 00:51:46 And he didn't surprise me because it's like it's got creed, right? He does creed as well. but it's it doesn't have the kind of the combination of both really good and I'm not going to tell you other music hasn't been great I think there's been some other great music I just think that
Starting point is 00:52:02 out of everyone who really gets it Kiner gets it the most and I hope and what I'm thrilled about is that Flonny is doing his movie and Flonny's doing the I guess the movie comes out in like 2026 or who knows when it comes out but
Starting point is 00:52:16 you got to guess that Kiner's going to be scoring that film and that's going to be fantastic to hear in the theater. I hope, because there's been people buzzing about the music all over the place, not just me, like everybody's raving about the music. I hope that, like, you look at a James Mangold who is looking at this stuff and sees and goes, all right, well, maybe this guy should score my film, you know?
Starting point is 00:52:40 And then the same thing with anybody, I think it should be mandatory at this point. As long as he wants to do it, it should be mandatory. This is the guy who's scoring your film. He's the Star Wars composer, and that's it. But it's not going to happen. It's just how I feel. All right, we're going to move on to episode two. Again, it's kind of a deluxe episode of the big thing today.
Starting point is 00:53:05 And before we do, as I mentioned before with our sponsors, we rely on them. We rely on you guys, hopefully that you enjoy them, that there's ones that you respond to because that's what helps out the show. That's what helps us going. So if you were able to give the means to, please consider it. And I'm going to tell you about two great ones right now. I'll tell you both about Nutrafol and AG1. Here you go.
Starting point is 00:53:32 You guys are very familiar with AG1, and I'm glad that I am. I love AG1. They've changed my life, man. They really have. Our next partner is AG1. It's the daily foundational nutrition supplement that supports whole body health. I drink it every day. I wake up in the morning.
Starting point is 00:53:46 I shake up a scoop in a bottle of water. and actually I've been using this cup I got from the zoo. I don't ask me why, but that's what I've been doing normally, and I put it in this cup, and I shake it around, and I love my coffee. Starting point is 00:57:55 and you do not know how much it helps the show when you find something that you like that you get. All right, let's move on episode two, man, episode two. We start out in the hospital,
Starting point is 00:58:09 and Asoka is there. She's with her, Patawan. She's waiting to see how she's going to to respond how she's going to do and it looks like kind of like a force stream or something happening but sabine is in middream and ossook says hey listen wake up you lost the map but i'm not going to break your chops about it too much and she tells her you know she's like look they got it um
Starting point is 00:58:32 but we have a problem and she said well did you back it up yeah but the droids destroyed it um you know where the can you remember where it was no i didn't get i didn't get a chance to check that and out before the droids came and so I messed up okay I messed up is that what you want I messed up so she's just uh you know she feels terrible about it obviously but I but she thinks she made the right move because she knows where everything is and then Assoca's like well I got a I got a bail I'm out and you helped enough so just sit there get better and recover from your lightsaber wound and then we get back to and like as I mentioned before they switch back to to the three lunatics and I'm on board for it.
Starting point is 00:59:14 I'm like, well, what are they going to do now? And now we just see it's, before we even get to Morgan, actually, it's just Baylon, Apprentice, and they're like, okay, well, we got the map, let's see if what Morgan is talking about is legit. Let's get this to her, let's call her, and we'll figure it out. And bailin knows something's coming. And I love his, I love that he's not just a kind of a one-note villain. I love that he's not just like, yeah, he's an infant power.
Starting point is 00:59:43 And I love Palpatty. He's my favorite character, but still, you know what I mean? I, he's not just a traditional bad guy. He's got, he's got depth to him. And there's a line that we'll, I'm bringing him now, but we'll go over it again later. When she says, oh, he's feeling sentimental. He's like, truthful.
Starting point is 01:00:00 You know, I don't, there's not a lot of Jedi left. I don't want to kill him. And I, and I, he's not totally corrupted by just the kind of mass destruction. And maybe he's not, we haven't really fully. got what he is yet, right? They haven't, I mean, they're behaving like Sith, but they haven't fully said that they're Sith. They clearly said they're not Jedi.
Starting point is 01:00:26 You're right about one thing. We're not Jedi. But they're not, are they Sith? They act like Sith. But he doesn't necessarily behave like a full-on Sith. He still has like compassion and other things, and he's sentimental about the Jedi order in general. So it's, I love, I love this extra dynamic of what they're doing with Baylon so far.
Starting point is 01:00:46 And obviously with the great Ray Stevenson and Howie. And I love that they ended the first episode, I also want to say, with for our, for our friend Ray. That was great. But anyway, so yeah, Baylon's looking up at the sky, man. No one, no one something's going down. And they're in possession of something pretty big. So we get back to the loath cat sniffing around.
Starting point is 01:01:08 And so she knows, Asoka asked about what happened to that other droid. And for some reason, droids camping around there still and she knows it. So he goes, she goes through, she sees the Ezra thing and she's kind of playing decoy. And the cat says, hey, somebody here. And then she cuts off the thing's head. And we get back to the hospital where she gets the head, Sabine, rather. And again, we know that what kind of tech genius she is and she's able to kind of bring some stuff out. But we get to this dynamic that keeps happening with Hera, where she's just watching. and she's just trying to piece it together.
Starting point is 01:01:43 And she was always the mom of the group. She wants to make sure that everybody's getting along, and that she knows that she can get these two back talking again, that things could help. And there's this, this is a very Sabine moment to me where she's working on the helmet. She just is pushing it, pushing it, pushing it, and starting to get really close.
Starting point is 01:02:03 And the droids like, no, you got, you found out what you had to find. Don't blow us up. And that's also where that line came in before that I mentioned, where Harrah's like, yeah, just pulling down. He's like, you're not here. It doesn't hurt you. But the fact also, then we get the next story moment of, it says that this thing was kind of faction on Corrilla.
Starting point is 01:02:26 Now, there was something that I saw on Twitter, by the way, and I don't know all the facts of it for sure, because I haven't read the book in so long, and I think it was aftermath, but there was something that didn't line up with the Carrelia side of things, with how they're building things and aftermath and how it connects to this.
Starting point is 01:02:46 This is what I've been telling you guys forever when it comes to canon stuff. One of the reasons I stopped reading the books and stopped reading it. Because I, let me say this. One of the reasons I stopped reading the books, is I started reading the books because of the connectivity to the canon stuff.
Starting point is 01:03:03 That's why I wanted to read it because there are some great stories. And if you don't give a crap about the canon stuff, whether you just want great Star Wars stories, then please, please, don't let me deter you from doing that. You absolutely should. There's some great stories and amazing writers. But my thing is that I was reading it for the connectivity of it,
Starting point is 01:03:22 and I realized quickly over the course that they don't really, they'll change things. They don't really, if it doesn't fit up to what they're doing, it doesn't really matter. They don't think it's going to, no one's really going to care. Dave Volone does not give a crap about what the books say on Carilia and this and that. He's going to pay attention to maybe the games. Maybe not even the games, but the comic, excuse me, the animation, the movies, and the TV shows.
Starting point is 01:03:50 He ain't paying attention to the books. He ain't paying attention to the comics. Maybe the games. He's not paying attention to that stuff. So if you're one of these people who are, wait a minute, they're not paying attention to the Karelia stuff. Get over it because it's not, it doesn't, it's not going to lock up. They're going to change things. So I saw that on Twitter, so I just wanted to do it to address it as far as that goes.
Starting point is 01:04:09 But they do know that Carrelia is where this thing, there's a shipyard, and they've got to get to the shipyard now. So, Harrah's like, I'm going to go with you. I'll go, and we'll go, we'll go check that out. Sabine, you stay here. And then we get, now we get back to the three lunatics. And now she's going to open it up and we get this. And I love this whole thing where Baylon's like, what is this place?
Starting point is 01:04:31 Jedi didn't build this. And she's like, it was an ancient race from years and years ago. It's like, what's that all about? Are we going to learn more about that? Let's learn more about that. that's what I want to know about. So Morgan knows exactly what she's doing and she knows how to make this thing work
Starting point is 01:04:48 and the map opens up and she gets the location, she finds out where Thrawn is, and I love that the two of them are just in awe of what the hell is going on. Like they understand it. And also that little side piece about how they were talking about how the, I forget the name of the place that it was what the kids called it in lore, that it was kind of fantasy.
Starting point is 01:05:12 And then Morgan's like, I assure you it's not, it's some, it's fantasy based in truth. And they have this full on map. They know exactly where it. She's like, I feel Thrawn, he's calling for me. He's calling from across time. He's calling for me. Like this is our galaxy and this is where this hump is. And she looks through it and she is a full on shot of it and it's right here.
Starting point is 01:05:33 She's like, that's where he is. And that's where we got to go. So as soon as we get this, and that's why they've been working on these hyper drives, and they've been working on these things, and that's what it all pieces together. That's what she has, like, she's been asking the imperial remnants to kind of put together this ship for her, so she's got the capability to go find this guy. And it's like, this whole scene was brilliant. I loved it.
Starting point is 01:05:58 And then they have the scene between the apprentice and Baylon, and he's just like, he goes, listen, if this goes down, for some people, what they think it's going to be, it's going to be another war. For others, it's going to be, it's going to be pure, what about for us? Power. More power than you can possibly imagine.
Starting point is 01:06:18 And it was like, okay, then they're really setting this up as far as why. And I think it sets it, I mean, they are setting him up, thrown rather, to be like, you know, the Thanos of it all. So, and then we have,
Starting point is 01:06:34 and, you know, You can, as I mentioned in the beginning of this episode, the, um, the budget you can tell was really, it was utilized well. Because this shot here, again, audio listeners, is a shot of a planet with kind of a, with the station above it. And it looks like something like out of a Nolan movie or something. It looks like it's so, it's so well done. It looks really, really good. Solid. Really solid.
Starting point is 01:06:59 And then there were only a couple of moments I noticed the volume, but not too much. and Asoka's coming in and she is going to meet Hara to, you know, start to do this investigation. And at first, I didn't know how I was feeling about this guy. Because I was like he was, I always feel like the bad guys. And I feel like, especially after Andor that the, that it would have maybe fit this imperialities, especially because they're ex-imperials and all the stuff that the English accents would have been pretty, I don't know, effective, right? And I wasn't sure because I've seen this guy, character actor's been around,
Starting point is 01:07:37 I'm like, I don't know if I'm going to buy this guy. And I bought him hook, line and sinker. I thought he was great. And he's just, and I love this reasoning for everything that he was talking about, about when they, at first he's like, yeah, I'm busy right now, so I'm not going to help you guys. So sorry, come back some other time. And there was like, well, I can kind of make you do it.
Starting point is 01:07:56 He's like, all right, fine, come with me. And they're on the, they're on the ship on, and they're on the back of the ship, and they're, or not the ship, rather, but they're going through the yard. And this is when we start to have two different conversations, right? We have the conversation about Sabine and how that's all working, and the things that's already,
Starting point is 01:08:14 and how she's got to take her on as apprentice again, and Harrow really giving her that nudge. And then the conversation more so about the Imperials, about how these ex-imperials are working here. And she's like, how do you trust them? Like, how can they be trusted? And he's like, you know, they're not here for that. They're here for because they're,
Starting point is 01:08:32 trying to make a wage. I don't care about politics. And he's like, I'm a businessman. I don't give a crap about this. I mean, when I was lying through his teeth, but good pitch. And they're going through the shipyard, and this is where we have the conversation about Sabine and how, you know, the nudge to take her back as an apprentice.
Starting point is 01:08:51 And then we get the more so of a cigarette burn more so than a lightsaber. Nonetheless, great conversation between the, as I call them right now, the tenant droid and Sabine. and this is where the comedy came in for me of, I'm not like As right. He's like, hey, you got that right.
Starting point is 01:09:10 But it's a great conversation that he has with her saying, look, you can't judge it in the past, and she says, well, let me ask you a question. If they didn't come up with this idea, this map, that they didn't need me, would you, I mean, if they didn't suggest me, would you ever even come here? He's like, it's irrelevant. It's irrelevant. What I mean it's irrelevant? It's irrelevant.
Starting point is 01:09:32 she's like well but hera was the one who suggested but but she was the one who was on board with it like get over it want to finish your trains you never called you never came back it's like i love that he called her out on it but it was still but he wasn't but he was just kind of like look i've dealt with this for years on these paduans man and you got to get you got to get it together because we need you guys to get it together and it's a great moment between these two and it gives her back he's like figure it out here's your saver figure it out and it's a great kind of inspiring thing. Now, this is where it all goes down. Because now they walk through and
Starting point is 01:10:05 they find that it's, you know, this HK droids, like, where is this thing? We got to, you got to figure out where you've got one somewhere. They're like, no, no, not here. And then the red protocol droids, like, well, I saw one. And then this guy's
Starting point is 01:10:21 like, shut up, protocol droid. He's like, yeah, the thing shut me down the other day. And the protocol droid is just doing his job. And all the imperials inside are like, shut up, dumb droid. And then finally, even the woman's like, I can't, I can't stop him. She's like, what are you talking about? Stop him.
Starting point is 01:10:37 And then all hell breaks loose. This guy jumps up like an imbecile and says, for the empire standing next to a Jedi, who slices him down the chest and kills him? Because he's stupid. And then the protocol is like, I'm going to back up while this dum-dum gets shot because he's trying to shoot two and he's dead. And then she decides, instead of running away and putting a weapon down, it's a good decision to fight the Jedi also.
Starting point is 01:10:59 And then she gets hit in the head and she dies. because then Harris shoots her too. Dumbedum. And then Steve Carell Light hides behind the droid and he gets arrested because he's not stupid.
Starting point is 01:11:14 He was not going to fight them. That's what the woman should have done too. And then this fight happens in the shipyard. Now, you guys tell me, tell me in the comments because I haven't paid attention to this, I guess, well not. So I know that he got the HK droid. I know that we got the
Starting point is 01:11:29 we got the prenatons, We got Baylon. Who's this guy? Is this an inquisitor? Who is this guy? We haven't talked about him all. He just shows up and he's been fighting something. He's throwing savers of people, but who is he?
Starting point is 01:11:40 And Hera flies out right away to go track down this ship. And this is a classic Hera, great pilot, one of the best pilots in the rebellion. And then this fight is continuing, kind of back and forth. It's such a Star Wars moment with the two of the kind of the lightsaber fight to the space battle, or the, you know, the ship battle, rather. And again, the, that's... The graphics in this are really, really good. And then our first glimpse of chopper.
Starting point is 01:12:06 It comes out, and people, if you're, when we saw it in the theater, people with the rebels fans, and he popped up and people lost their minds. He's grouchy old droid, and grouchy as ever. So the battle continues, and obviously the droid eats shit, and then it's between, I think, whatever this inquisitor is or whoever this thing is, has it been explained? Because I didn't get the explanation on it. Maybe I'm wrong. But Harris really in pursuit, this thing realized.
Starting point is 01:12:31 This is eventually, she's got no chance at Osoka, runs away. I love this shot where she just kind of switches, shifts a little bit to the right. The thing grabs its saber. Off they go. Time to leave. So there is a tracker on the ship, and they get it on there, and choppers are excited about this. They do what they do. I love this shot.
Starting point is 01:12:53 Just tell me of good news. And they're tracking it, they figure it out, good to go. now this is again it's like a great setup to all of it and especially tracking back to if you're a rebels fan you now wonder to yourself how does this all play into the prologue of rebels because we saw Asoka recruit Sabine I thought that's how it happened well they addressed that and this is kind of when it all goes down here because you start with Sabine is now after that conversation with the droid. She's like, I got to figure my stuff out. I really do. Because I know what I need to do. I know that I want to find Ezra. And I know that I need to kind of regroup and do what it is. She has
Starting point is 01:13:39 the Mandalorian armor. And they mention that again for people if you're watching the show for the first time. And Herod brings it up earlier that she's, she's Mandalorian. Of course, she's stubborn. But she's also a great warrior, right? And this is what happens. And this is I think I was going to tie in later with Din and everything else too. But she, she, she, she, she, she, gets herself ready, she cuts off her locks, and we get to that kind of that area where we were in rebels. But when we jump back to the scene in Corrilla, I love, again, well, why they, Hera can't understand, like, because Hera is, and has always been about the mission. She's always been about the fight. She's always been about, you know, since her dad, Cham Sundala,
Starting point is 01:14:21 was the one who kind of helped start and kickstart with the rebellion. And she's been, she's just been tunnel vision or just laser focused rather on getting the empire out and the new republic is to her this is what it should be like you know why are they loyal and she's like and so it's like it's nothing to do
Starting point is 01:14:44 with loyalty it's greed it's total greed I mean that's that's what they that's what it was in the first place and they they get this guy and they and they it's like it's when they it's around me very kind of world war 2-ish, right? Like after World War
Starting point is 01:14:59 2 there were tons of ex-Nazi that were kind of put into the system in the United States in general, right? And able to work again and be out there and it's like how loyal were they?
Starting point is 01:15:15 What was it to were they, were they how many of them actually were able to conform if any of them? And so then Asoka's like, all right, our mission's going to begin. She walks in and here's Sabine in the full arm.
Starting point is 01:15:36 And this is where we get to our moment. And this is the thing that I wanted to kind of go back and forth on. So this is the scene that immediately I saw it in the trailer, and I knew that and I recognized it from the show. And so for those, I'm going to do a side by side for those you guys who have never seen the show. this is straight out of the episode. So this was from the animated series. And it's, if you go back and forth, you see it's, it's very similar.
Starting point is 01:16:08 And then she's walking up to the mural. There she is again, both sides. That's the animated version of it. I mean, it's side by side. It's the same exact thing. And she walks over to it. She looks at it. And it's that, I mean, this is great.
Starting point is 01:16:23 I love that Flonio was able to recreate this. this is a very slight difference here is where again she touches Ezra's face touches Ezra's face and then she's waiting for there's Asoka kind of waiting for her and in the animated series she puts the helmet on and she walks over to Asoka
Starting point is 01:16:41 but in this she just walks over to her and she's like all right well mission's about to begin let's go find Ezra and we think the episode's over but alas this is when we get that hyper drive that's still they're still working on they got they they got that technology
Starting point is 01:17:00 able to go and then bailin's like look I uh I got a bad feeling about this isoka I think she's pretty determined and I don't know and the apprentice is like no we got out of there okay he's like yeah but maybe you maybe you didn't and so this is when this is that scene that I was telling you about where Morgan more or less is saying listen um whatever whatever you got to do, take her out. And he's like, I don't know. She's like, well, there's just so little, there's just so little Jedi left in the world. So, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:17:37 It just would be a shame. She's like, sentimental. He's like, yeah, truthful. Love that scene. One of my favorite scenes in the entire series thus far. But, and then he's just like, okay, we've got to do our thing. That's it. Still don't know who this character is yet on the side.
Starting point is 01:17:52 like to know more. Tell me about it, if you guys know. And then we're out. That's it. Steph Green did a great job directing that episode as well. So it's a great start for me on episodes one and two. I love where we're going with it. I think it's a phenomenal start. Loved the music about it. You heard my gripes. Very, very small, very small gripes. and my my biggest gripe is that the third episode is 28 minutes or whatever it is 31 minutes that's my biggest gripe I just and because I just want more of this story
Starting point is 01:18:29 so very curious how we're going to play into it what do you guys think though do you like the series so far so curious to hear all the thoughts I want to hear the thoughts from the rebels fans I want to hear the thoughts from the non-rebels fans I want to hear thoughts from everybody about what you thought in the show
