So I finally saw Obsession and did my reaction to it yesterday. You guys watched it. Thank you very much. So I'm going to kind of go over and see if I thought the movie was worth the hype. Let's see. Luke, can we change that title? What do you say is, I finally watched Obsession. Was it worth the hype?

Can we do that? Is that possible? Cool. We have other things to talk about besides obsession because we're going to get into that. Minions and Monsters, $14 million. opening day already. So how's that going to do? Last Airbender was a very popular animated show

and people were psyched about the live action when it came out to Netflix because, you know, look at the success of One Piece. But the fan base didn't really get behind it. Now that looks to be the case because the second season dropped and it lost a shit ton of viewers. What does that mean?

So we will discuss that and more as well as another story that just came Amen. Just kidding. That's a bold face lie. It's just the avatar story. All right. Let's get into it. It's myself, Chris Carr. So Winston should be happy because like that was, that's what that turned out to be. You almost beat both of you guys, but you didn't. You just won. So this week, Roka has had a great Monday. Mike had a good Tuesday, but he didn't beat Roker. Yesterday I had my writing partner on. I introduced her,

to the audience for the first time. She's essentially the person who created the Shmows No. And we in the audience seem to really like her. So if you guys didn't watch yesterday stream, because I knew what the thing is, if you don't lead with a DC story or Marvel story, and you just, nobody clicks, even though you talk about those stories,

but I was like, okay, you know what? I want to people to introduce, I want to introduce her to people because we're going to be launching a Kickstarter in the near future. And I want people to really get to know her a little bit. And those who did really responded to her. Even my mother this morning goes, I really liked her. She was real nice.

I was good. Thanks, mom. Yeah. Good. So that was good. Does your mom have hard opinions on all of the co-hosts? No, she doesn't. She doesn't.

I mean, does she like, she likes, she likes every, all, all you guys. Yeah, she just, she's seen you guys enough like, you know, because you guys are here all the time. She didn't know really. And the way that I titled it was that Martini really changed the course of my career. And I said, this woman changed my life. And that was the thumbnail. So my mom was like, who the hell was this? And you didn't know who it was.

So that was good. So we posted that yesterday. Hope people will check it out. The other thing we posted that we can just get into is the obsession, reaction. And so for people who are wondering, the first thing I'm going to say is that at the end, the end is a huge reveal. It got cut out of the reaction because Universal has been blocking reactions all over the place. and they blocked hours.

And unfortunately, the only way to get it unblocked was to cut this segment out. And it just jumps at the very end. But what I think I'm going to do is I'm going to wait a week. And then I'm going to, because I still have the edit with the ending, I'm just going to re-edit it. And I'm going to put a reaction out to the ending. So if people really want to see it, they can see it. So that will be up on the channel, probably in the next week.

I'm going to give it a shot. It might get blocked the end. I have no idea. But, man, Sam is beloved on the channel. is the first time I've seen the audience kind of going back and forth. You know what I could do? Because she came in here yesterday. We taped Andrew.

She came in hot because she had a very, she had a take, controversial take. Let me see, hold on. Text Sam. What do you want to say to Sam? Do you want to call in at some point or do you want me to call you and do you want to share your opinion on the situation? question mark because she wanted she's like we got to have we got to go we got to have a debate with people because i'm gonna there's a there's something that i should are you going to see it are you going to see

the movie i don't know if i am i've i've had so many people tell me i can absolutely handle it and then i've had other people be like you're not allowed to watch this i don't know if you look and i want to watch it from the comfort of our own home yeah um but i am concerned that this is going to mess me up so chat go off let me know if i can handle it because you guys know what a baby i am i'll tell you what I don't think you'll be able to handle it. Okay. I don't. We take the spoiler.

We took the spoiler label off of this thing. I want to. Where did the spoiler thing go? Oh, man. We remove the spoiler thing? Someone remove the spoiler thing. Because I have to, in order to get this thing with Sam, I have to, I have to really kind of dive into it a little bit. Oh, I don't know.

But let's start with this first. Because we'll see what Sam says. She might have texted already. did she no she didn't but the movie itself let's start with the title of the video here today is it worth the hype uh the answer is an astounding yes okay the movie's excellent and it doesn't look like the movie was made for 750 000 right it looks like it was made for 10 million It looks just as good as it's it's a smaller movie than say backrooms, right? Backrooms cost 10 million.

But the quality of the movie itself, the filming, like sometimes you make a movie for $750,000, you can see it. You know, you can see it in the film. You can see it in the way it was, it was, it's weird. That part alone, I noticed that immediately when the movie started. The acting is top notch from everybody around. the board. The lead actress should be nominated for the Oscar. She really should. Wow. Okay. I love her. I loved her on Superman and Lois. She's wonderful. I didn't watch that show. So this was kind of a new thing. This is an introduction to her. And I think she's, I think she's brilliant in the role.

So do you, again, giving a summary without spoiling, do you know what the movie's about? I know that he has had these unrequited feelings or this crush on his girl for a long time. He uses some kind of little magic stick. It makes a wish. And then she becomes obsessed. Right. And all this shit. That's it. That's a great way to put it. Um, so I knew nothing about the movie. I didn't even know that much. So all, and I, I refuse to watch any trailers, anything. And we were just on the edge of our seats. We both thought it was excellent. So again, I'm going to give, I'm giving a spoiler here. I'm going to put my hands up. I'm going to give spoilers for people who haven't seen obsession. And I'll put my spoiler. And I'll put my

my hands down when the spoilers are over because I have to give the spoilers in order to tell Sam's point of view. And again, I'll let her talk about a little bit more. But we're watching and essentially so this guy bear who is not a thank you. That's great. Look at that. See? Wonderful. Look at that. Is that Pildee or Luke? Whoever was. Whoever was. Well done guys. Well done team. So the guy bear, he's kind of a puss. And he just can't muster up the strength or the will to let this girl know how he feels about her. Right. So even when he's about to and she goes, listen, if you like me, tell me right now.

And he can't do it. so instead you revert's to the stick and he wishes for her to love him snaps it um and then all hell breaks loose now that all in itself isn't villainous per se but it's it's you know come on guy it's like steroids you needed steroids you didn't even give it a shot you didn't even give it a shot well he didn't give a shot just right but he didn't he didn't he didn't he didn't give it, he didn't give it a chance to even, to even see if he could work it. But that, that, I'm not, I'm not going to look. All right, you did what basically the kid did in big, you know, whatever, sure. But once you start to see it going to the shits, and you start to see

that this girl is not the girl that you knew and that there's something fucked up going on, right? You should start to say a few different things. One, I'm going to get another one of these sticks immediately to wish this thing away or find someone that can wish it away. That doesn't happen until a long time ago, long time after. But the progressively crazier she gets, there's one part of the movie where, again, this is spoilers. I'm going to spoilers here for people who've seen this movie. You can come back and I just have to dive into me.

Maybe we even put spoilers in the title as well. Chris, she starts, and again, you don't mind me spoiling the movie free because you don't know. Go for it. At one point in the movie, she's smashing herself in the face with a glass. thing and messing herself up. And instead, and this is, they've been dating for a little bit now and there's apparently, you know, everyone thinks they're in love and all this stuff too and they're a couple.

If my wife, or someone that I'm, I'm in love with is smashing herself in the face, this guy is just sitting there going, oh, well, is me, this shit's going to happen and again. Get up and stop her from doing this. And there's way other things worse. He is horrendous. He is a horrendous person for the things that he start. He becomes so selfish. He's so selfish.

So Sam's point of view at one point. Is this her? She said, call me. Okay, hold on. Call Sam. Summer's coming around. I like taking long walks with the family. There's a lot going on with camps with my family.

Hello? Hey, okay, so you're live. So I'm giving spoilers. The audience knows that we're giving spoilers right now. Okay. And I'm basically going over the plot of the story. And then I'm at the point where she smashes herself in the head with the last. And he's just sitting there, woes me and not helping her out. So he's making some pretty horrendous choices. Right.

I agree. Okay. So at one point, this is what I was done. So Sam in the video goes as we get to the end, because all this shit goes down and the friend gets killed and all this other shit happens and a crazy shit happens. Sam goes and well they they call well first of all he calls up and he goes how do I fix this and the only way to do it is for him to off himself so so as we're watching it Sam goes kill the bitch because it's the off himself but he could have killed her this is my thing guys

and just let's listen okay I he was wrong from the beginning yeah he did everything wrong But remember, he didn't go into this with malicious intent. He didn't break that stick knowing that he was going to do anything bad. He didn't even think it was going to work. Let's just remember that. If you were to off her, he would have, earlier, when she started doing all that horrendous shit, she, if he would have killed her, I know sounds so bad that I was saying this out loud. But like, if he would have killed her, he would have saved Sarah and Ian.

Right. But he didn't know at that point, but he didn't know at that point that she was even going to do that. no she didn't but she was doing crazy things right well look he didn't know she was going to do that but listen at that point she's she could do anything she she said him a cat right but why not but why not but why not instead of offing her why not throwing her in a in a straight jacket or or or taking her to a hospital and going hey listen um the first the first thing that he didn't even pay attention to was not the same the cat sandwich it was was the it was the it was the Chris has no idea what's going on

I'll I'll explain so many questions she eats a cat he gets a cat well yeah so but before that when he first brings her home she takes the dead cat out of wherever he buried it and did a seance and he's and he doesn't even mention to anybody right right agreed so you take her you take her to a doctor immediately yeah but didn't I say from that when she did that be like, yo, she needs to go home. Right, go home. Right, but not call Pauley Walnuts and take her out behind the shed. No, but I said that later in the movie.

I said that later in the movie. Like, give me a little more credit, guys. I am not saying that anything he did was right, but also this is a thriller. Like, at the end of the day, if you're in a fight or flight situation, if it's between me and you, you got to go. Like, that's just me. Like, whatever. And also, I mean, I'm in a fight or flight situation.

But you wouldn't make that choice, but you wouldn't make that choice. I would have never done that. Right. Right. But this guy's an idiot. Yeah, he's an idiot. He was a stupid and he was a kid that didn't even know how to talk to girls. He had zero Riz or L Riz or whatever the hell these kids call it these days.

And he used that because he was desperate. But again, I'm going by like, well, what I, and also we're all thinking like you would have. You're going by street rules. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Oh, God. I got to go. I have people at my house, guys.

All right, all right, bye, bye. Thanks, Sam. Bye. Yeah, so we're definitely different points of view on that one, too. I just think that the girl, it wasn't her. It was, like, it wasn't her. She's like, many, she's like, there's a point where she wakes up. Someone said, has the guest seen the movie. She hasn't, but I asked her if she minds if I spoiled it and she said, no.

Because she's not, she's not a big horror fan. And so, but yeah, Chris, to answer your question, in the beginning, the cat dies. Right. And he's devastated by it. And so after the spell goes down and she comes over to the house, she takes the cat out of the bag dead. It's been dead for like a week or whatever it's been or a couple days and just puts it in the living room and has a seance with it.

And he doesn't mention this to anybody and never brings it up. And then fast forward, as you said with the cat sandwich, she fed him the freaking cat. And he still take her to the hospital immediately and tell everyone. So he was an individual. I would argue, because my only comparison for this, right, is something like the purple man from Jessica Jones who can tell you you're in love with me. And then you lose all autonomy and you are, you know, obsessed with this person, that kind of situation. So doing that still makes you a person with ill intent.

Yes. So he is a villain. He is because once he figures out that, because look, when she first, he wishes the, you know, he wishes the. I wish, you know, she would love me more than anyone else, right? And then she shows up and he's like, okay, maybe this is, maybe this could work out. Maybe, maybe, maybe, I don't know, maybe she sees something to me now that she didn't see before and that's what the wish did. Okay. But the second you start to see shit really going wrong and you still selfishly let this girl become this, then yes, you are the villain.

And he is for a whole entire time. And the way he reacts to things and other things to where I got to a place when they said, you've got to take yourself out. I said, that's the position you put yourself in, brother. And so Sam and I just had a very different point of view on it. But it was funny because the audience is usually always on Sam's side. But this is the one time she couldn't believe that. It was like coming after.

I said, welcome to the internet. This is, this is it. So anyway, you can take the spoiler off. I'm not going to spoil it anymore. Thank you guys for listening to that. But the movie is fantastic. And as you can see, it's a conversation starter. And I did miss something, which I won't spoil it again,

but there's something that I missed at the very end of the movie that people pointed out that now makes a lot of sense. But it's really good. I can see it is one of the better movies I've seen all year. And it just goes to show it. I understand why it did better than Mandalorian and Grogu. I understand why it did better than He-Man. I understand why it did better than Supergirl.

Those movies are so boring. like repeat, repeat, money, money, money, money, as opposed to creative and thought pieces and yet it's disturbing. But it's like, but this is to me, this is

the way to go in the future. Yeah. Well, and I've heard so many people too talking about how they were just so excited to see, you know, a fresh story, fresh faces. They were really pumped to not see the same actors used over and over and go, wow, these actually feel like people. They feel friends I know or they remind me of this shitty guy I dated, you know, and I think that's one of

the things you as a viewer kind of like to do a, oh, I can actually like put myself in this world because it's not all the glossy familiar faces. 100%. Sometimes you make impulsive decisions. You just do whatever. You know what I mean?

I, that would have been my impulsive move was because if I have to pick me over you and listen, again, I'm going to say this. He did not, I mean you talked about yesterday. He had no malicious intent. No, he didn't. He's just like a guy that doesn't know how to talk to girls and he broke that stick thinking that it was not going to do anything. It was just

like a joke, but it did. And now here we are. So you're saying basically, listen, it's killer be killed, I'll feel bad about it afterwards. Yeah, yeah. Like if I'm in a situation, when I said that like killed, like it was because she had done so much

outrageous shit already. But it was it's her. No, okay, that's another thing, right? It wasn't her. It wasn't her. The other girl, like the real Nikki was there. Right. But she asked her, please kill me. Right. She knew. She knew that he, she wasn't getting out of this. Right. And even if she lived, now look, she's lived. She's alive, right? Yeah. She's got to live with all of this shit. Yeah, right. I mean, it's, it's, it's definitely fucked up for sure. My favorite thing that we got out of this though now, Chris, like we were watching and or yesterday. And so every person that's on there, if they do something wrong, I go,

kill him. Kill that Star Wars bitch. I don't know. That's just me. And also, like, when I was saying, like, oh, I would have slapped them because let's be, this is the trick, let me explain why. Because from where I come from, if we're at a party and the girl takes my chair and she pulls me,

I'm going to slap the shit out of it. And that is just the realest thing that any, and don't tell me, no one tell me that you wouldn't. Like, come on. Right. Like, everybody just sitting there, staring at her. Get the hell out of here. It's hilarious.

But I'm telling you, we're going to be watching Toy Story, and Jesse's going to do something and go, Keller! Pathetic to women. I've been through a lot of things in my life, too. I totally felt for that girl because she didn't ask for any of that. I'm just talking about in the moment when the crazy was happening. To defend himself, right, even though he's a douche.

Yeah, like, I, like, defend himself, because I'm watching it from a movie. It's a movie. It's a movie, guys. Like, it's a movie. Of course, I don't want, I don't know. Someone's done something about being sexually assaulted and all this kind of stuff. I am not, I wasn't even thinking about that. Right.

Like, to be real with you, I, I, I, you're talking about in the moment, in the moment, just to defend yourself and then, and then again, take it to hell with you when you go. Yeah, yeah. And then you take the hell. We're in this position, guys. What are we going to do next? Right. But I, yeah.

Well, look, I think it worked out for the best for the best person who survived. But like I said, Um, we'll see you. And honestly, and honestly, sorry, I keep on because I'm, yeah, you're hot. She got to the train. I picked her up from the transit yesterday. She's like, we got to talk. Oh, yeah.

Oh, we got to talk. Also, for me, it was a bitch-ass way for him to go out. He went out like us, like, for him to kill themselves. Yeah. That was like, like, he, he needed to sit there and, and live through whatever the the shit that he did. Yeah. Right.

Right. Like, I agree with that. Right. Right. That was a coward way to. go out take some pills yeah yeah yeah cracking of the stick on the other end I didn't hear it right so that's what we were talking about yeah someone said that we didn't realize that she actually cracked the stick beforehand that's why he came out kissing her and stuff you're like

oh what the hell's going on and then it made a lot of sense but um by the way full-blown like my boys saw this in san diego a couple weeks ago and full-blown like we're having debate here about yeah yeah it's a huge debate it has it's on the channel at the household um and then we'll um yeah So real quick, so can you let, because people are wondering because your Star Wars journey has begun and we started you with Andor, what do you, we are two episodes away from finishing Andor. How are you feeling about it? Oh my God, I like it so much. I love Andor. He's my favorite. Yeah. And I didn't think I was going to like this. Yeah. I didn't. I didn't think I was going to like Andor at all or Star Wars or anything. And now I want to know. I want to know who the hell the emperor is. I want to know, like, I want to see. I want to know. I'm just, you know. I'm very, very hooked. Yeah, so we got, so we have, we're finishing up Android today and then we're going to watch a movie.

I won't, I won't say it in front of the same because Sam likes to, I mean, I could say that. I guess I could say the name of the movie. You wouldn't even know what the hell it is if I said it, right? No, no, don't say it. All right. All right. I'll see you in a little bit. All right.

And then so, you know, so it is really, I am so, I have no regrets about showing her Star Wars this way because I'm so jealous, Chris. I'm so jealous that she gets to watch it like this because she said she has, she kept at one point that, you know, they keep mentioning the emperor. She's like, so who is the big, the big boss is the emperor, right? She's like, have we seen him? I go, no, we haven't seen him yet. She goes, do we ever? I know, you want to know? She's like, yeah, we see him eventually.

She's like, oh. And then she's like, she's like, she's like, she's seen the stormtroopers and she gets, she's, she just the empire is. so scary to her right now because of the because of a and or and then rogue one is going to play like a series finale she's going to be devastated she can be devastated which i i wish i had a similar experience because when i watched rogue one you know this where i'm just like i don't this movie's fine i don't really have like the same reaction that everyone's having to it the build after you watch and or and then watch it for me makes it such a good payoff movie yeah because now i'm so invested in these characters as opposed to i know everyone's going to die it's it's another one of those stakes of prequels issues for me where I'm like, I know what's going to happen already. Yeah, she doesn't. Watching that show makes it so intense. She doesn't. She's never met.

She's never met, uh, Vader before. She's, you know, she knows. That's crazy to me. Yeah. She know, I mean, look, she's seen, she's seen, she's seen Vader and everything too. You know, of course, but like she's never like a full born movie. No, she never see really seen an action. I asked her yesterday.

I said, I said, do you know who, what? Because I'm, I just assumed. I'm like, you know, Darth Vader's real name. And she goes, Darth Vader. I'm like, that's amazing. I'm like, that's amazing. I'm like, it's amazing. I was like, yeah, it starts there.

And so, and then I've told her in that not everything has the and or tone and not to expect that because I'm trying to, I want to set her up for the prequels when, because they're so dramatically different in tone. And I said, some movies are definitely more kid based. Some movies are more adult based. And that's the beauty of, of what they've done in these tones. So, um, anyway, but yeah, andor, just watching. it again. It's so freaking good.

So good. Yeah, it's so good. All right. But the other opinion that we wanted to get to is Supergirl. You told me you were going to text me after you saw it. You did so. You told me you gave me your thoughts. What were your overall thoughts of Supergirl? Okay. Listen, this movie is not as bad as the internet makes it out to be. Is it great? No. No, it is not. But I don't think. this is the worst superhero movie I've seen. And here I'm going to start with the things I like. Millie Alcock. Incredible. She's wonderful. She's so good in this. The various alien designs, not Krem, you get the fuck out of here. But everyone else, all of those other aliens? Incredible design. Incredible practical makeup and prosthesis. So very cool. For the most part, soundtrack was fairly fun

until we had those dumb needle drop moments that were apparently very James Gunn pushed. When the middle started playing, I had to cover my whole face. I just was shaking. I was laughing so hard. Poor points. Ruthie. There's no character development. Her lines feel so, so inorganic. You're not rooting for her. At least I wasn't. Every time she said her whole like, they killed my noble and honorable family. I wanted to just do the like I am Moana of Montenuity.

You'll bore my boat. That's all I can think of. Orniquilla. Yeah. Crime was terrible. Crem was awful. Pacing was really, really weird. It was super Wick Fury Road, is what that movie was. But another thing I did like about it, though, is I liked that it wasn't the universe is at stake. I liked that we had personal stakes because honestly, if you have to save the universe all the time,

it does get a little like, okay, guys, like again, again, the world's going to end. All right. So I like that it was personal stake. And the other criticism that I've just seen that I do want to address, so many people have been doing this, like, she's a terrible role model for girls. Who said she was supposed to be? Right. Like so many people were like,

I'm going to let my child dress up as Tony Stark, who's an alcoholic and womanizer at the beginning of this series. This 23-year-old who's watched all, everyone she's ever loved dies is drinking heavily, and you're concerned about how little girls are going to view this. I don't, I'm not a parent, so I'm not here to tell you your business. But I just think there's a lot of comparisons here that I'm like, guys, you have been so much nicer to so much worse.

And I understand that we've had so. so many superhero movies come before this, but I think some of the criticism is unfair. Should it be criticized? For sure. But to the extent it is, I don't know about that. It's weird how it's getting bashed even more than like the marvels, right? And I think that the marvels is way worse than this. And this is not a good movie. It's a forgettable movie. But I'm with you. It's not like, I didn't mind the tone. And there were some moment, the Krypton moments and stuff too, it really worked. Right? There are some good stuff in it. for sure but it is not you know what but what like I said there is a lot of I think people just kind of

hammering on and showing how bad it is and that that that's out there too but it's the same thing because then you get the same people the I love everything that have to feel like they have to protect it and everything like I saw some guy on Twitter yesterday includes me and goes oh unfortunately he's now diving into the camp of uh of the toxicity on this and I go and I wrote back I go that is that is false on so many levels. And the guy writes back and he's like, well, you know, you're talking about how the DC's failing after two movies. Like it is okay to ask the question.

Is the DC, does the DC need to maneuver after this? Because it's also reporting on the fact that this is not a win. You can talk about it. Now, there's a way that you can express yourself. If you're screaming and yelling about women and James Gunn being this and that, I'm not in screaming, calling people names, then yeah, you're doing it wrong. Get out of here.

If you're saying the strategy of putting Supergirl as the second movie could have been a colossal error, I stand by it. It was an error. And I also stand by the fact that I think doing a Bain movie and a Deathstroke movie next, if it's not a $40 million movie, is a colossal error. You should be focusing on Wonder Woman. You should be focusing in on Batman. You should be focusing in these characters with the obscure,

characters right now are not working and it's a business. I understand, Christa, you know, you're such a comic book fan that you want to see these other cool characters pop, but for the mainstream audience, they don't hear shit. Yeah. And I, you know, we've talked about this before of I love the idea of doing this. I love the idea of hit me with some other characters because with Marvel, we did have people who were a little bit more like B.C. D tier and that worked for them, but it's because they also were assembling all these different characters, doing these isolated stories. and you still at least knew enough about them. You know, you knew who Tony Stark was.

You knew who Thor was, et cetera, et cetera. Right. Supergroping the next one. I think it works if you are. Winston, I talked about this. If this is your like superhero, like we're starting with Superman. We're doing the alien stuff first and we're really focusing on him. But to have all these other projects before the rest of the Trinity, how are we going to make

our DC gumbo? You got to have baths. You got to have Wonder Woman. And I know that crypto is beloved. Gosh, do I love that guy? He looks like Gimli so much. And he's so toyetic. So I understand DC pushing.

Like he gets his own animated series now. He gets all this other stuff. It's so wild the properties we're getting before we get like a Wonder Woman or a Batman project actually coming into the fold. And the Batman that's included in this universe. Right. Absolute Batman. I'm so excited about. That's such a cool story.

The Batman, but having this continuation, I feel like if we're talking about what's in the cinematic universe, we're in some key components. You kind of build, and there's nothing toxic about bringing up the fact that if you think in the same way that if you're watching, you know, a baseball team and you're like, I don't know. They had such a good player at first base and then they traded them. I'm a Knicks fan. Shit, I really wish I would have signed Robinson, right? But they didn't. Is it, why be a negative? You can't be negative about it.

You're buying into the same thing. Everyone else says if you're negative. No, that's not how it works. You don't love the same, you don't love it the same way I do. It's not how it works. The internet famously lacks nuance. And unfortunately, it's one of those things where we click on headlines. Or if we even don't do that, we just read the headline and that's the entire story that we run with.

That's all we talk to me about, right? And people do these really polarizing things in order to either rage bait and get engagement for that or are so overly generous with their critiques that then they're really just pushing to be part of the marketing. You know what I mean? of I want to have my pull quote featured in their next trailer drop. You can dislike something and still find virtue in parts of it. You can love something and still go, yeah, I know this isn't a great movie. I love Superman. I love that movie so much.

And I completely understands people's criticisms with it. That does not negate that I personally enjoy it. You can have objective and subjective opinions. It's pretty wild, you guys. It's the unfortunate side of the, the, politics of it all and not just the traditional right you know right left it's it's it's the idea of if you like something more than any than someone else is if with everyone else everyone else doesn't like it but you like it then i guess you're a show um if you hate it

if you just don't like it and you're you're you just don't think it's a good movie and you don't think well then you know you're a toxic person and now you're you're you should be making doing a hate channel because you don't agree with it you're not trying to spread the positivity it's like it just it just it became teams it's boring it's boring um but anyway uh so that's out there the other thing that i guess that we're gonna we're curious about this because luke sent this to me earlier and he's like maybe you should leave with this i said look if i have to if i have to talk about this as a main topic i'm going to jump out the window because i don't know anything about this topic and that's avatar right i just don't know anything about it it's not

Now, I'm not poohing on it. I know about it, but I don't know enough about it. But I was like, you know what? Let's read the story. And then we'll let Chris comment on it because Chris does know it very well. Yeah. So let's check this out. Avatar, hold on.

Okay. So, and we're talking about the last airbender, obviously. Is I always called Last Airbender? It is, right? Yeah, Avatar, the Last Airbender. Yeah. All right. Okay.

So right here. The Last Airbender sheds viewers. The second season of Netflix's live action adaptation of Avatar, The Last Airwinter premiered last week and pulled in 8.7 million views in his first four days, even though it ranked second in the streamer's weekly English language TV rankings. It also represented a major drop from the 2024 first season. The first season debut with 21.2 million in the same span of time, meaning it was a steep drop of almost 60% in the second run.

Still, the new season did have the impact of renewing interest in the first season, which charted in third place with 3 million views. The new season launched Pails in comparison to I Will Find You, the new Harlan-Cobin adaptation, which landed 24 million in his first four last week and had a further 34.1 million this week. Comparatively, Netflix's live-action One Piece series debuted to 18.5 in its first four days, while the second season was 16.8, much smaller drop of just nine. interesting though to show you how big of an IP is that one piece which was critically kind of and

loved by the fans 18.5 as opposed to whatever 24 or what was the first season? Chris 22 is that what I said wait 21 that's pretty that's pretty damn good it shows you how popular the damn show is but is this a kind of Amazon Lord of the Rings type situation the first the first season was so you know not liked by people that even hardcore fans like I'm not coming back And then the second season turned out to be pretty good. It could be one of those things because I do think season two in terms of some of the acting beats, some of the choices they're making on camera and everything are a step up. However, eight episodes is not enough for a show like this.

They took an incredibly beloved season and condensed it down to 20, from 20 episodes to eight. That's a lot that you've got to whittle down. And so many people argue that, well, that's a lot of filler episodes. they're really episodes that are really character building and building on relationships. And one thing that I kept hearing from folks was, oh, these relationships are so forced and so rushed, because we took out a lot of the time where they get to actually know each other and build their camaraderie or build these crushes or things like that. So there's some things that work really well here.

There's some things that absolutely don't. And I think, as always with anything, when you try to kind of capture the like paint-binding, numbers of something. We tend to not like that. But when people also do their own interpretation, people also really don't like that. Like, I think the actress who's playing Azula is doing really great with what they're giving her. But that character in the books or in the, in the comics and in the animated series, she's a sociopath. You know, like she's, I want that. I want more of that. Like, and she instead is having some like really lovely beats every now. And then when we see that she's a human or we see that she's hurt by something, I don't want that, frankly. I want her to

be absolutely out of regard. That's what goes back into our Supergirl conversation, right? Because so, so you know the woman of tomorrow graphic novel and how many people responded to it so well. And then from what people say, I haven't read it, they changed it dramatically. Right. It's like if that's this, if people responded to that and you made it because people responded to it, adapt the damn thing.

Yeah. Yeah. It's especially because something like Avatar, you're investing so much in building this world. out. And this is a show too that I think could really greatly benefit from when they do those, let's do little drops. Let's do a couple episodes here, a couple episodes here. Really milk that season and let everyone see the world you've built. And because of that condensing too, it just doesn't feel like this incredible big world. The second season mostly takes place in a city called Bossing Say. And it's this massive city with like different rings that also correlate to like levels

of poverty or wealth. And it's kind of like the Obi-1 situation where so much it feels like you're on the volume. And so I'm losing like the expansiveness of this city and how it's so impressive that somebody almost conquered it before and that they're trying to conquer it again. Like there's just little things like that. I don't feel like you're really there. Yeah. And I'm wondering for people who have never watched the animated series if they have a very different experience from this, because I can always go back to my steel book. I can always go back and watch this cartoon. I wonder if I'd, I'd, I wonder if I'd people have the same pacing issues without having that prior knowledge.

So anyone who is just watching it set on scene, I'd love to hear from you because I could give it a little bit of allowance and I tried my best to remove myself from my understanding of the show. But even Logan, even the master of, you know, suspending his disbelief had a couple moments of Oh, okay. Oh, this is pretty rushed. Oh, this is pretty weird. I can't remember because I know Stapp was a big avatar fan and I feel like she didn't like the series. I don't want to misquote her, but I feel like that's the truth. And, and, yeah,

I don't, it just, it didn't work. Now, Luke had an interesting question that we both can kind of get into here. It said, Netflix, since Stranger Things have not really been able to create a series that have captured audiences like Stranger Things did. What made Stranger Things able to hit that trending? Well, I mean, look, you're also looking at what, 2015, 2016, when that show first came out around that area. The 80s nostalgia thing was, was fresher, right? And they took the 80s side of it. They did that. They had a really good writing, they had a good cast. They also capitalized on the success of, or the building up towards it when that was coming out. They had really good writing. They had really good marketing in general, and they had good performances,

and they just had a really interesting story, and it was new. And they pushed it. It was really when Netflix was starting to pop as like the premiere streaming. I know they really, they had house of cards and other things, but it really was like that area when there was no Disney Plus at that point. There was no, their competition wasn't much. So they were really going against like HBO at the time and other things. But they were the streaming platform where now there's a lot of different shows. Apple has a great show out every other Thursday. Netflix was starting to say, look, this is what streaming can do.

And Stranger Things was one of those things. Yeah, absolutely. Well, it's kind of the obsession thing that we were talking about earlier, too. We had a whole bunch of fresh faces. We had Winona Ryder. So you had that like, oh, my gosh, I love her. I loved the stuff that she did in the 80s and 90s. You had, you know, David Harper, who most people did not know.

Right. It was, oh, isn't that guy from Newsroom or isn't that the guy from, you know, a couple of random movies? You had all these fresh faces. You had so many homages to great horror 80s, sci-fi films and things like that. So it was this, hey, let's. take some familiar concepts but give it a fresh new spin. And I feel like a lot of times when we are adapting materials, which is a huge thing that Netflix is doing. They adapt so many books, right?

They adopt so many anime, manga, that kind of thing. But in this kind of case, when you take something so beloved that has a hardcore fan base, it's really hard to get that live action iteration nailed. It's true. You have to like kind of, you know, if you got to have a few successful ones first, even if the, because if season one, season two were great, and then season three falls off, it's like, all right, I love the, maybe they can get back on track. But when you start off the gate, like here, here's an example, I guess this will segue out of it. Um, despicable me starts off big, big movie, you know, they knew and then they do a specific we need two, then they throw minions in there, and then they do it. And now these movies make

anywhere between $800 a billion every time out. And that seems to be the case. Once again, Chris Carr, because minions and monsters, it's a $14 million opening day already. And Universal and Elimination's minions and monsters pulled in $13.75 million on its opening day on Wednesday. No previews easily claiming the top spot. Pieldy, can you tell me how much, what, what, what, it's rotten tomatoes right now because I'm going to go into that in a second for myself. It pushed Toy Story 5 to second place that film earning a further 7 to 8 million for the day and bringing its domestic total to 326 million. Projections now have minions and monsters tracking for around an 80 million five-day domestic debut,

some estimating anywhere between 60 to 90 million. A further 90 million is expecting from overseas market by end of Sunday, meaning a potential 170 million worldwide long. It's pretty big. The new film follows the early days of Gruse Hinchman in the 1920s heyday of Hollywood from their rise and fall and rise again as movie stars and defenders of Earth against an alien invasion. Film sits at 88% from 86 reviews on Rot Tomatoes. It's the highest critical score for any despicable me or minions movie to date. Also had a strong a minus cinema score from audiences.

There's also incredibly budget conscious costing just a net of 85 million to produce. good for them. Good for them. Smart before marketing. Collectively across six previous entries, the franchises earned $5.6 billion globally. This is why that is so smart at the end there, that number. For the first 20 minutes, it's abata. Abata, you know what they're saying, but you don't know what they're saying.

And you didn't have to hire a $5 million actor to go, you know, you just have the director or whoever, else do it. And there's, there's Roger and whoever else too. And it does like, so this movie, I took my 14 year old to see it who, um, loved the meetings of a kid. And she was for, for an hour and a half, she was six years old again. And she was smiling the whole time, laughing. I turned around. I stood somebody out of the theater reaction. There were other kids, big smiles on her face, I walked out, heard people talking. It just adults going, I just felt good watching that movie. I was laughing. And it was like, it's, it's. It's. It's. It's.

It did feel to me, and I liked it. I liked the movie a lot. But it did feel to me like, you know, when you see those little three-minute, like shorts of the minions, like right before, like a big movie starts and they show the three minutes, you know, shorts of the minions. This is that that they stretched into an hour and a half. And they could have easily made this, you know, thing, but they do it in a way that it's really, it's impossible to not watch this movie with a smile on your face because it's so goofy,

but it's fun and and you know it's it is what it is about 170 million dollars projected to make I think it'll make more than that uh toy story is going to have a have some competition oh yeah absolutely people love this i was talking i i the minions are something that i just don't really get um but i love that other people love them so much it was just something in despicable me that was like oh they're cute weird little guys and then when they start getting their own movies when we got the giant eye of mignon looking over los angeles from universal studios was like I don't really get the appeal of this little banana dude, but sure, love it. Good for everybody else.

And I think they're so smart to really capitalize on these guys because when the franchise has made billions as a whole. But just in retail alone, it's generated about $2.5 billion in all their toys and plushies and apparel and everything. I mean, the characters alone, the little minions, drive about 70 million of that total net worth. So to continue capitalizing it, and because they're such weird little dudes, it's total blue skies. Yeah. You can do anything with them. They are indestructible umpalumpas. So you can do ridiculous stuff and kids love them.

Yeah, it's true. And it's like, and that is, you know, I guess Luke or who is it, Luke or Peelday? Someone just asked a question, said, it was Luke, was it dumb for Disney to drop Moana live action for next weekend? Potentially. potentially, right? Because you're taking business away from Toy Story by dropping it. You're also now going ahead to head with minions. It might not. I mean, the thing is with the live action. This is what I think is going to happen in Moana, Luke, similar to our bet with

Mufasa and Sonic, right? I think Moana is going to have a soft opening weekend, but I think it's going to have legs because I think that people don't need to rush out to see that one opening weekend. I think it'll be out in the theater for a little bit. I think it'll bleed into August. And people will start seeing it in August before you go back to school. And I think it's going to have legs. But it's going to definitely take a hit from Toy Story 2's third or fourth weekend.

Oh, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 5. And then Minions are going to have a strong. Because they're drop off. Let's see. Because what, Toy Story 5 did 150. I guess it's opening weekend. right and minions is is just going to do 70 or 80 or whatever it is weekend too so it'll probably be you know in the 30 to 40 million dollar range for for week two um moana will probably beat it but

it's still going to take some some some time you know it'll it'll slice some meat off the off the bread yeah for sure it will yeah um i mean people aren't going to rush to it too like they they know how moana ends except for logan you know he's still going to be there every single week going, does she make it? And he's going to help keep that box office going. But everyone else, yeah, you can see that movie when you need to. And it's one of those, these kinds of movies in the summer for kids. My neighbor has two little girls. And they are at the movies every time that he has them. Like, anytime it's his weekend with them, they are at a movie. They are going to do something so they are just entertained and also relatively quiet, you know, for two hours. So I feel like

all of all these are going to do really, really well over the summer. I think so too. Luke would mention that Spider-Man's coming out. I think it's a different audience. A little bit, especially since this one, they are leaning into like a little more adult, a little bit more potentially like spooky kind of stuff because of that spider transformation. Yeah, I'm going to take me. A few of my friends with kids have been like, I think I should see it first before I bring my kid. I'm not taking my eight year old to see Spider-Man.

I'm taking my eight years. Between if she's, she's actually seeing, she's been so psyched to see Toy Story. And they just, the last two or three days, things kept happening and she couldn't go. She's been so upset. They've finally, I think that they're sitting in the theater. right now watching it. So, um, to find, finally got to see it. So I would not take her to see Spider-Man. She doesn't want to see Spider-Man, but she wants to see Moana. We're going to see that together next week, which will, and she's, she's pumped to see it. Um, the other thing, you know,

speaking of Moana, I will say this, and I don't like to really comment on this stuff, but I want to actually, it, a point of view here is that, um, I like Will Wheaton. I think Will Wheaton is somebody who's been good for geek culture. I think he's been someone who's pretty outspoken. And I thoroughly disliked his comments about what he said with The Rock. I don't know if you saw that. But he basically called the Rock a coward because the Rock decided that he didn't want to talk about politics. And then the Rock decided it. So like I actually really push back and I don't like it.

And I've been whether it was criticized for it or other people said it to, especially whether it's in our space. I don't like when people tell other people how to use their platform. I don't mind if you feel that you want to use your platform for certain things, but it is not your right to tell. And also, no offense to Will Wheaton. Will Wheaton does podcasts now and does plays and things too. He doesn't have the type of business that the Rock has that Will Wheaton can afford to be one-sided in his political views and be outspoken about it and he can do that.

the rock does not and he's not obligated to speak about this stuff he's just not obligated to you can be disappointed you can say no you know what i think he's got a pretty strong voice and i would love to hear his thoughts but he's chosen not to do that i think that's fair to say but to all my coward's the right word yeah yeah because i you know you and i defer on this a little bit of you know where i'm always like i do think it's important to use your platform i do think that and if you lose some people along the way as long as this is something that you really believe in i think it's important to have those convictions and everything, but also I say that as somebody who does not have a very large platform, who my livelihood does not really depend on whether or not people politically align with me or things

like that. Is it a shame when you are one of the most famous and easily recognized and recognizable human beings in the world when you don't speak out about certain atrocities or things like that, to an extent, yes. But also, I wonder a lot of times, too, where it's, I need them to weigh in on this issue. Does the person you want to weigh in, no one, enough about an issue to really have a worthwhile opinion sometimes. That's the other thing, though, too. It's like, who knows, who knows? Let me ask you a question.

Like in, in, in that scenario that you just posed, or you're like, I like them to be able to speak up and say things about it, but let's say that there's two options I can give you. One, the person, whoever it might be, the celebrity, you wanted to speak up, speaks up, tweets out about it, does the thing and has their voice about it. Or doesn't speak up about it. We don't know about it. But behind the scenes is lending money to and putting money towards a cause,

lending money or putting money towards a politician that does support that cause. But we never hear about it. What would, what option would you choose? Oh, obviously the latter. Right. And this is, this is a fundamental thing, not to get religious about things either, but like growing up Catholic, a really big tenant in, at least the way that our church was structured and our archdiocese was structured, was that, you know, you don't brag about charitable actions.

You don't tell people about donating your time, money, or energy, because that's just what you do as a human being. And that people who are very, very ostentatious with their like, look at me, look at all the good I'm doing in the world, are perceived in a not so great light. The other side of that, though, is if it's inspiring to get other people to do it, do it. But there are people who do these things quietly.

Like, look at how Michael Sheen has done crazy things for medical debt over in the UK and almost no one knows about it. He donates almost his entire paycheck now for any project to all of these people's debt overseas, which is incredible. So there's swings and roundabouts to everything. But this also goes back to we love to just cancel anyone at the first moment of disagreement. It's team play. I hate team play. Well, Rock, you don't speak out about it and you don't have the same opinion that I have. So you're a coward. You're a coward. What have you, what have you does speak up and he doesn't have your opinion. He's on the opposite side of things. Then you're going to go after him because, well, if you're doing this, then you, and then you, and then you put him on a team.

Again, I like Will Wheaton. I think this was the wrong way to go about this. And I think it was pretty lame. Anyway, um, let's, uh, let's close with this story. And then we'll get into, um, questions, the 30 right now. Chris Carr trying to beat John Roker. Can she do it again? Can she win two in a row? we shall see. We've got Starfighter coming up. Now, Amy Adams is one of the actors in the movie, and she had an interview about Starfighter, and she says she only has a small part in Starfighter.

Batman v. Superman, Donna Justice Star, Amy Adams, has broken her silence on heading into Star Wars Starfighter, but we also have new comments from Matt Smith, Deadpool and Wolverine director Sean Levy, has assembled an A-list cast for Star Wars Starfighter, including Amy Adams. We've previously heard that the actress is playing the mother of Flynn Gray's unnamed character. He and Ryan Gosling are leading the first Star Wars movie set after the sequel trilogy, though the extent of Adam's role has been a mystery until now.

Sitting down for a conversation on the Smart Less podcast, she revealed I had a very small part. I loved getting to see all the props and I went to the creature shop twice. Yeah, it's so cool. I mean, I'll talk about this, I'm sure, down the road, but like, I don't know what I'm to talk about. I was so nervous the first day of working. Like, I forgot how to act. I'm sure Sean Levy's like, Amy, are you okay? I'm like, no, I'm not just all right. I'm on a Star Wars set. I like grew up on this. I have to now get out of my dorky fan girl place and go into my professional actress mode. And combining the two is really hard. It's, it's so cool, you guys. It's just so cool. What can I say?

Flynn Gray is so great. Between this and reports suggesting that Amy Adams's character sends her son to find his uncle who can transport him to Ray's new Jedi Academy, chances are that the star will only appear in a handful of scenes near the start of the film. There's also been rumblings about her playing a Jedi, with the implication being that she may be training her son before having to send him away for some reason. Meanwhile, Matt Smith, who was expected to play one of the movies villains alongside co-star, Mia Gauth, was similarly tight-lipped during a recent appearance on The Today Show. I think the film is going to be absolutely blind, and I think it's going to be brilliant, truly. I was so, so excited and thrilled to be on it. Mia Gauth, fantastic. Ryan Gosselin, great leader. to make you care about this kid and be in a motherly figure than Amy Adams. Yeah absolutely. I mean Amy Adams I think is one of the greatest actors that we have. She is a wonderful listener. I mean, it's why a rival's so great. It's a master class in watching somebody react. to things. She's so incredible. She's somebody who I'm trying to go through all of her

filmography because I love everything. But I'd also compare like the length of a role too to somebody like Viola Davis. She has a scene in doubt. And it's one of the most powerful things you'll ever see on film. So when you have a Academy caliber actor like Adams in Star Wars, you can get a wonderful, beautiful, beautiful, nuanced, emotional scene. And she can get in and get out.

I think she's going to be great. Right. I'm really hyped about this movie. I know that like I should temper my Star Wars excitement. I know that. But I'm just really excited about this one. I like everything I'm hearing. Well, PLD asked this question. I wonder if it rubs anybody wrong the wrong way, the way that Carrie Ann Moss, act like up here and she said no, because of stories like this. Because we're already expecting her to not be in it that much. Carian Moss, you're like, oh, she's going to be one of the big members of the whole thing. And they ruined her. ruined her. She was in every bit of marketing. Everything. She was doing talk shows. Everything. It was it was a it was a bait and switch. It was bullshit. So that's why people get pissed out with this. You're already expecting her to kind of be she's there. She's not and they don't never once really led the fact because like you said Chris the marketing with acoly you might thought she carrying a moss was a main character. No one thinks amy Adam is the main character. We're excited that she's in it. You know, um,

I'll tell you what is a big benefit though right now is how good house of the dragon is right now. that's going to be a big benefit to this if it closes out strong because you know Matt Smith is already people love Matt Smith they like him like but yourself other people who saw season two and he needs a good movie and so that's what I think because House of the Dragon is winning people back who are watching it right like the like even like Matt Sarah who felt the same way about season two that you did is loving season three loving and is really on board with it. Other people are getting on board with it. The excitement is getting back there with it. And so him coming off of that show leading into this, good thing. Project Helmerry, Ryan Gosling, going into this. Good thing.

People wanting to get the stink of Mandalorian Grogu out of their mouths. That is going to be a good thing. Because it already has more star power. It's got real story to it. This movie, it needs to be big for them. Because if it's, if it's disappointed, and it doesn't because there'll be videos and everybody else trashing it oh it's going to be another Disney woke movie

and this and that now if it bombs you're going to give them every bit of the ammo to say this should be the end of this because I'll agree with them I'll agree with them if this movie bombs and it's not good it needs a reboot however if you shut people up you make a great movie and it does really well you make all the videos you want about how it stinks and this and that too.

But if you show up in the box office and it's a success, there's only so much people can say. Absolutely. And that's why I'm really, really rooting for this one, especially Ryan Gosling coming off of a 105-day theatrical window there for Project Hail Mary. I mean, come on. I want movies to do well always.

I really want Star Wars to do well in theaters. And I want to be stuff that makes me want to sit in a theater. We talked about this. I love that I went and saw Mandelaarine, Grogu, and IMAX. Some of those moments were so cool to see on a huge screen. But for the most part, it still did feel like I'm watching, like, several episodes edited together. That's really what this feels like. And I'm really hoping that this is the cinematic experience that so many fans have been looking for.

That's why you put a movie star on it. That's why movie stars in it. You know, it's a very fair comment, and I'm not being facetious about this. So, no, I'm serious. I don't care. And I think that's so fair right now because they haven't really given anything to care about. However, and if you remember this, Mr. Film Guy, if you remember this comment, when the first trailer for Starfighter drops, if it's good, right?
