But speaking of Barbie, director Greta Gerwig, is already taking projects and she's going to be doing two, not one, but two Narnia films. We'll talk about that. But as you saw in the title, the big news is Indiana Jones in the Dial of Destiny. doesn't do very well. I wouldn't even say okay at best.
Starting point is 00:01:07 With the budget that it has, it does poorly. And we'll talk about that. Can it catch up? Can it make a profit? And how does Kathleen Kennedy survive it? We'll talk about all of that, for sure. Venom 3 has a little bit of news. Deadpool 3 has a little bit of news, some cameo stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:27 And Cracken, speaking of box office, that's a movie. Everybody's talking about how the animated movies at Disney. And every time you get an a la carte, the percentage of that a la carte goes to the artist himself, Mr. Wicked Art. So head on over there today, the Christian Harlov.com. All right, everybody, let's get into it. It's the big thing. I'm excited. I hope you are too.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Let's do it. Lots to talk about. Great. What's up, everybody? What's going on? Nice to see you all. Nice to talk to you all. And as I said, tons, tons, tons, tons to discuss.
Starting point is 00:03:45 There's, I mean, I don't know, I think I guess you probably just jump right into this and talk about Indiana Jones. Didn't do very well, guys. All right, Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny. This is from Dark Horizons. The soft 60 million domestic three-day debut for Disney and Lucas films, Indiana Jones, and the Dial of Destiny has been repeated overseas with the movie also coming and on the low side of projections of 70 million from 52 international territories,
Starting point is 00:04:13 bringing its worldwide opening to 130 million. Fifth installment of the franchise is said to be performing well in Europe, bar France due rioting where the Latin American Asia-Pacific regions are being dubbed lackluster, says deadline. The film still managed to open in first place in numerous markets. It also opened in China, where not much was expected or delivered as it took in just 2.3 million over there. IMAX brought in 11, 5 million of which came from overseas. Still, comparisons are being made to the more roughly audience received Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, and the results are not good.
Starting point is 00:04:47 That movie managed to debut at 272 to Global Star, just over double what Dial did. Domestically, and not only opened far beyond the only real Star Wars misfire with Solo, a Star Wars story at 84 million, but actually will debut to less than Transformers' Rise of the Beast earlier in June, with that film taking in $61 million on its three-day domestic start. Even the Flash, a film being written off as the biggest bomb of the summer, still managed to make 139 in its worldwide debut, and it costs $100 million less to make. The trade also reports that, according to their key sources,
Starting point is 00:05:19 this touted production budget figure $250, $2.95, $2.95,000, is actually less than $300 million. The film end up cost to make, and that doesn't include the estimated $100 million in marketing. The reviews out of the world premiere can really do appear to have an impact, and yada, yada, yada, yada. This is bad news for Disney and for Lucas film. Really bad.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Like I said, the movie, I enjoyed watching the film. I thought I was compared. I was comparing it to Crystal Skull. I think it is a, I think Alonza de Raldi said it best. Is it the best Indiana Jones movie? No. Is it the third, fourth best? Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:02 It is. But I didn't mind watching it the way I mind watching Crystal Skull. I didn't love the ending, really at all. And there's a lot of stuff that didn't work. But I still, I liked watching Indiana Jones in the movie theater again. But a lot of people didn't. And that was, here's the big thing overall. Number one, you had to get past a lot,
Starting point is 00:06:28 you had to get past a lot, but one of the main things you really had, you had to make this movie incredible. Now, that's not always easy. I mean, it's very hard to make an incredible movie. It's very hard to make a great movie, right? Especially when you have so many cooks in the kitchen, especially when you're dealing with a company right now that just isn't on the same page with a lot of different things.
Starting point is 00:06:48 This movie had to be great for a lot of different reasons. Number one, you didn't talk about what they mentioned in the report. It's a $300 million movie. So it has to be so good that everybody is talking about it, that word of mouth and critics, everybody who sees it loves it to get people in that theater to make, at least to make it break even. So it's got, if it has any bit of a negative, and premiering it can was a disastrous decision, really bad decision.
Starting point is 00:07:16 If you didn't have enough confidence in it to think that it was like next level, everybody's going to love this. Maybe they did, but then that's again, that's, you shouldn't, there's a lot of decisions that are being made over there poorly. And that would be another one. But when you go and you think, okay, let's hold off. Let's let the audience go and see. But this movie needs to be incredible because of the $300 million budget to make sure that everybody. Holy crap, this is the best Indiana Jones movie.
Starting point is 00:07:45 It's better than the third. And then the other thing you got to do is, and this is the hardest part, and this is what Mandalorian seasons one and season two, season one and two were able to do. there are a lot of people out there who are just going to hate the majority of stuff and you really got to win them over. They're going to hate it because there are political agendas. There's no doubt about it on both sides. And let's not be hypocritical in the fact that there's on both sides.
Starting point is 00:08:18 There's political agenda. But for the videos that go, I'm not watching this because of the political agenda. Your political agenda is hate. A lot of people, not everybody. a lot of people. So you've got to win those people over too. Mandalorian Season 1 and Season 2 did that, at least a majority. And I know people are like, oh, you don't have to cater to them.
Starting point is 00:08:39 You do. You're not cater to them, but you've got to appease in the movie making business. And even in business in general, unless it's like a political particular thing, and I'm not saying that this movie is political. I'm just saying that in general that you've, You've got to appease so many different people, and it's why it fucking sucks right now. The entertainment business in general and everything the way, and I've mentioned this many times over, how politicized entertainment has gotten over the last five years.
Starting point is 00:09:12 It sucks. It's like, us against them on both sides. On both sides. It's crazy. It's like it's movies and TV, but it's just how it's become. And you've got to try to, the second, you got to get everybody on board. And when you go into these meetings, rightfully so people go, look, we're not going to appease it. We're not going to make everybody love us.
Starting point is 00:09:31 We're not going to, but it's just the thing that comes with it. Right. So once all this stuff started coming out about, it's this, it's that, it's got this. It was, it was, it had something working against it. So that's part two. The amount of, it's not, it's not a great movie. I do find it. People are saying, you can't call it fun.
Starting point is 00:09:51 There's no way to criticize the movie. You say it's fun. Well, then don't listen to it. It was a fun movie. I didn't mind it. I don't like the ending. I like some of the character choices. I don't like the deep fake,
Starting point is 00:09:59 the de-aging. I wish I would have deep-paked. But I didn't mind watching it in the theater. And I liked it way better than Crystal Skull. Way better. Sorry. Way better. Not everybody's going to agree with that.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And you don't have to. People want to, and I also think that it's, you know, it's fair for people going and come out of the movie. I don't like that movie. And like what happened at the end. I didn't like the movie. I didn't like the character choices.
Starting point is 00:10:22 And I don't look what they did to India. I think it's fair. But you've got. All these different markets, and I think that the other thing is that streaming and the amount of movies that came out in June, most of the movies that came out in June, did not do really well. Cross the Spiderverse was the one that kicked ass. It was it. Elemental. Ate a bag of farts.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Rise of the Beast did decent. Rise of the Beast, which we thought was going to be the one that ate it. And it didn't. everybody thought everybody we were talking about everybody thought the rise of the beast was going to be the one that was going to get crushed because it was in between spider man and and the flash and was going to get annihilated it did not it was number two out of all these movies it was number two because the flash as they say in this is the biggest bomb of the year so far Andy could be and that was the other thing the other point I wanted to make was the other thing that you needed to do outside of all that other stuff um you needed to get people that Because Indiana Jones is a hero for or was a character that really popped during the early 80s into the late 80s and then try to make one comeback in 2007 and did decent. And is an iconic character. There's no doubt about it.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Whether you watch him or not throughout your movie-going experience, you're aware of him. But not everybody's a massive fan anymore because he wasn't in the zeitgeist the way that. comic but movie characters or even Avatar or all these types of things. So you again had to make an incredible movie in order to say, all right, it's a little too long also. But nonetheless, it did all this stuff and the $300 million budget is the killer. In the same way that like Black Adam, right? Black Adam, I think, I wanted to make $450, $500 million. That movie at a $400,500 million, $400 million, $400,000.
Starting point is 00:12:25 whatever it is, in the grand total, because if I said to you, when they announced it, Black Adam, if I, again, years ago, Black Adam's going to make $500 million. You're like, wow, that's pretty good. And then I tell you whether it's like a $250 million budget or $200, whatever the hell it is. You're, what are you doing? These budgets are out of control. I've said it so many different times. The budgets are out of control.
Starting point is 00:12:49 And there's this video that was going around about this guy who worked on the, um, on the, and the special effects of what movie was it? Shit. I can't remember which one it was. It might have been the Flash. It was the Flash. And just talking about how these studios hire the special effects people and how they take these bids and there's a certain amount of shots.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Can you get it done in this amount of money and can you do this? And then they overwork the VFX artists and they don't really give a shit if they have bad VFX or not. They just want to make sure that they hit the mark and do what they do. It's a major, major issue. in general. Now, that's not necessarily what happened here with Indiana Jones, but even though, like I said, I, if you're going to do de-aging or anything, you're going to try to put the younger version of a character, deep fake voice modulation, or don't do it, or recast. Because it's too, it's too jarring. The first part of the Indiana Jones movie, when it opens up with, with Indy, in this younger scene, the, the, the, the action. scene and the story portion itself feels about as Indiana Jones as you can get. The problem is I kept getting sucked out of it because it sounded like a 80-year-old Harrison Ford. And also, there was like this jarring video game look that would, oh, that looks good.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Oh, that looks like a video game. Oh, that looks, his face looks like it's falling off. And that's, that's de-aging as opposed to Deep Fink. I didn't feel that once during Boba Fett, and that's Mark Hamill and that's TV. So I just don't understand it. You know, if someone wrote me on Facebook and gave me this whole answer and I'd been saving it on the site, I haven't a chance to check it out. But I really want to get the reasoning behind why he or she thinks that they actually did this.
Starting point is 00:14:37 But then it kind of dives into the next category, which I see. Like Kathleen Kennedy is trending on Twitter again, right? And I saw this tweet that came in and said, it's so hard because you see. Like, what's the, here's the tweet itself. Hold on. Because I want to address this. All right. Sean Nyberg says, it's hard because you want to criticize Kathleen Kennedy for bad things like bloated budgets and endless production timelines.
Starting point is 00:15:05 But you don't want to align yourself with the insults who criticize her for good things like hiring women and actors of color, which I responded. You have to look at it like a sports fan. You can be a fan of the team and realize that the coach that they hire just isn't winning the games. Made some plays at work, but most of them didn't. It might be time for that coach to coach another team. and that's really, really, to me, what it is. I just, it's like, I think there are, and we mentioned this, I think, on capes and cows on Friday, there are those people, as he mentioned, that are just going to go after her because, again,
Starting point is 00:15:42 policy-wise, and think that, oh, she's got an agenda, she's going to do this, it's like, people will take you more serious if you separate it and say this, say something along the the lines of, look, you gave it a shot. There's just so much, so far, it just hasn't worked. You can look at all the different things inside of the directors that came in, got fired, got moved, quit, left. That's one portion, right? The amount of movies that, I mean, Solo, again, I think, I do think that Solo is more of a Bob Iger failure than it is Kennedy's, because Kennedy he did push to have that movie come out in December, and I think it would have done significantly better.
Starting point is 00:16:24 It doesn't mean I think that the movie should have made, and I think that the reason behind it and then scrapping the Obi-1 movie because that didn't do well, and the comparisons behind it and what was going into Star Wars, that was definitely her. Indy's her.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Indies her. And I thought Indie would be a home run. I thought Indiana Jones, especially with Mangal, it had the makings of walking off the court, doing what you needed to do, get out of there, it's not. You got to put this on IGR, though, too. You got to put it on IGER because let's make it more of,
Starting point is 00:16:57 let's let's put Kathleen Kennedy more as a player now more so than a coach. And let's say that for a long time, Kathleen Kennedy was one of the best hitters on the, on the team and hitting home runs left and right. But recently, the swing got a little slower and very easy to strike her out now. and in the big games, you keep putting her in there because she can hit one more dinger. I just know she can do it. And you put her up there, and it's time to hit that home run,
Starting point is 00:17:31 and she strikes out again in the big game. Now this is on you because you got a couple other big games coming in. You're going to keep that player in? Then that's on you. Now, the GM, Bob Eiger, is the one you're going to look at and say, hey, this is on you now. Because these Willow, bombed, you got these shows that people are,
Starting point is 00:18:00 directors are leaving left and right, all these different things are happening. And now what used to happen, what you used to put her in there, whether people liked the movies or not, they were hitting a billion dollars, they were making your money back. Now they're losing money.
Starting point is 00:18:13 This is on IGR now. And it's a matter, and it has nothing to do with hating somebody because they're man or woman or whoever. This is looking at it in the business and going, this is not working. I think that what other people say sometimes, too, is like you look and you go,
Starting point is 00:18:33 if people are like, oh, she should leave Hollywood. Well, then you're a moron. You can leave Hollywood. I think you go work somewhere else, do something else, and you're going to probably wind up being as successful as you were in the past with different things and different projects. But it's, this is a tough one to come back from because the reason why
Starting point is 00:18:52 now could Indy stake a comeback here? Could it make its money back? Could it make a profit? It's the bigger thing. I mean, it's possible. It's unlikely, but it's possible because you've got this week
Starting point is 00:19:05 coming up. Fourth of July week or tomorrow. People want to go see a movie on Fourth of July. I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. There's nothing coming out this weekend, but then Mission Impossible comes out
Starting point is 00:19:16 and you're done. You're done. Once Mission Impossible comes out, you're done. And you're going to have a little bit of trickle here and there, but internationally, everywhere else, you're done. So this is a, this is a tough one overall. And I do think, I really do think, one of the people are going to right away say,
Starting point is 00:19:38 no, the biggest problem was it's not very good. Okay, let's put that in there. Let's say it wasn't very good, but it cost $150 million to make. Okay? Well, then it's not the same scenario because this movie should have been in the same. And I know, I understand that Prey was made for Hulu. I get it. But the reason to me why Prey works, because you could have done a big blockbuster Hulu budget over the top CGI movie.
Starting point is 00:20:15 You didn't. You scaled it back and you went lower budget and you focused on that kind of whole. horror element. There are things that happen in Indiana Jones, one, two, and three that they could have done smaller. The end is so big and probably cost the majority of the budget. And there's a lot of things that they could have done differently. $300 million for this movie is insane and almost criminal.
Starting point is 00:20:43 It's insane. I heard that last week. I couldn't believe that movie cost that much money to make. That is insane. It should have been shut down for so many different reasons. You want to make Avengers Infinity War and end game for $300 million a piece. Makes sense. I get it.
Starting point is 00:21:01 I get it. There's a lot of buildup. The movie's going to probably make a lot of money. You want to make Avatar for that much money? The next one, I get it. Makes sense. Indiana Jones, $300 million? Who's putting that through?
Starting point is 00:21:17 Who's saying yes to that? I don't know if it was, I think it was approved when Iiger was there. Yeah, it's nuts. It's nuts. Anyway, I do want to talk a little bit more about the box office because we have more things to talk about inside of it. But I want to talk to you guys a little bit about both AG1 and Manscaped. Let me tell you about both of them right now. Our next partner is AG1, the daily foundational nutrition supplement that supports whole body health.
Starting point is 00:21:46 I drink it every day. I love it. And I gave it a try, honestly, because Brett Sheridan told me to. And I'm glad that he did because it's so good. I love it. It tastes good, too. And it's not, I'm not a big vitamin person. I know that.
Starting point is 00:21:58 You know that at this point. But to take them all in one shot, put it in a water bottle, shake it up. That's it. I drink AG1 before my coffee. And I take it, it gives me a little boost to energy, and then I'm ready to go. And it makes me feel unstoppable. I am ready for the day. I love it.
Starting point is 00:22:13 It's really great because I'm not, I'm telling you, it was very hard for me. It was, you got to take this vitamin. take that. You got to do supplements. No thank you. Give me one. Everything. One shot. Done. And it tastes good. Might look green. Hence, AG1. It tastes yummy. I'm always looking for life upgrades, which is why I've come to love and trust AG1. It's why so many of you trust AG1. That's why I get notes all the time. You guys are trying it. Just did it. Love it. Reupped. Doing it again. I keep getting it over and over and over. And that's why they've been so associated with this show. it's delivered to you every month.
Starting point is 00:22:47 It's been very easy, super easy to make it a daily habit for me and get those travel packs. I'm going on the road soon. I'll be taking that with me. If you want to take ownership of your health, try AG1 and get a free one-year supply of vitamin D and five free AG1 travel packs with your first purchase. You have to go to drinkag1.com slash big thing. That's drinkag1.com slash big thing. I'm telling you, man.
Starting point is 00:23:14 you guys aren't using Manscape. You do it a disservice to the people around you and the people that you love. It's the best. It really is so many different products at this point, not just your ball bags, but so many different things. Manscape is the only men's brand that is dedicated to below the waist grooming and they perfected their game of the lawnmower 4.0. We've talked about the 4.0 many times. We talked about the beard trimmer. We talked about the nose clips.
Starting point is 00:23:35 They have so many different things. They have body wash. They have everything. If you don't have Manscaped, what are you doing? And people are going to ask, what about the Lertermancaped? What about the lawnmower? Why is it so different from other trimmers? Okay, Harlow, if you talk about it all the time, what's so different?
Starting point is 00:23:48 The upgraded trimmer includes a multifunction on-off switch that can engage a travel lock. It's a great feature if you travel a lot. It also gives you the ability to turn on the 4,000K LED spotlight on and off when needed for a more precise shape. You can shave your balls in the dark if you wanted to. That's always fun. The lawnmower 4.0 even allows you to customize your trim through additional guard lengths with sizes 1 through 4. I'm telling you guys, this is next level stuff. And a lot of you have already tried Manscape through us.
Starting point is 00:24:19 And I hope that we'll get a lot more. We have a lot of new listeners these days. A lot of new viewers these days. Well, I talk about Manscape all the time. Hopefully, it's the first time you're hearing about it. And hopefully, you listen and you check it out. If you want to get 20% off and free shipping, go to Manscape.com. Use that code, big thing.
Starting point is 00:24:37 I'm telling you, this is a gift for yourself that will, you'll never go back. Don't use those crappy razors that you get at the story. Like, I'm just going to re-up this. Just get yourself manscape. Trust me. You'll love it, and you're going to thank me for it. All right. All right, as I mentioned to you guys, many times over.
Starting point is 00:24:57 So I have gotten that on YouTube comments, on Twitter, and people have said, hey, you really want to support the show, and I'm not a member of the website. Is there anything I can do? Like, I notice you don't do super chats on your shows, and you don't do live shows. How do I support? I was like, look, support yourself, too.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Find one of these things that sponsors that you find is good for you, and that helps the show tremendously, like tremendously. So if you're able to, AG1 I've been talking about forever. Both of these, both of these I've been talking about forever. AG1, they've been with us. You see like almost every show I talk about them because they continue to come back here because you guys have been trying out,
Starting point is 00:25:37 and people have been really happy. And the same goes for Manscape. Manscaped is, if you don't have Manscaped in your house, I am, I don't know what to tell you. You're using those little crappy razors still when you don't need to and you have these things. I've been talking about forever. Try it and use the code because it helps us out. It'll help you out.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Get it for a gift. Get a for a gift for people too. All right. Let's stick with the box office. The box office is just tough. That's a tough algorithm to figure out right now, man. Cracking. Another animated.
Starting point is 00:26:17 It comes out and it bombs. It does bad. Dark horizons again. While the underwhelming start of Disney's Indiana Jones in the aisle of destiny at the box office has dominated the film news headlines today, the rest of the box office was also suffering a rather quiet time. DC's The Flash fell to the eighth spot in its third weekend of release with a drop of 67% and a haul of just $5 million, meaning its domestic hall is not even $100 million. Oh, that is brutal. 99.2 million. Wow. Wow. DreamWorks and Universal's 70 million budget animated film Ruby Gilman, Teenage Cracken, bomb.
Starting point is 00:26:55 There's your title. It's one of the reasons, too. Just call it Cracken. Ruby Gilman, teenage Cracken. All right. Bombed in its debut, coming in six place with $5.2 million and 7.6 internationally. It snagged a solid A cinema score from audiences.
Starting point is 00:27:11 It doesn't matter anymore if movies are good, I guess. Animation proves a bright spot, though, with Spider-Man, remaining in second place with 11.6 in his fifth, while Pixar's Elemental was third, 11.3, both still holding in their well. I guess Elemental kind of came back. So I retract my former statement. The former has made 340 million domestically and 600 million worldwide, while the latter is 88 million domestically and 186 million worldwide. I don't know how much it costs overall elemental, so maybe it's still having problems.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Jennifer Lawrence's R-rated comedy, no heart feelings, came in fourth with 7.5, marking a 52% in the second weekend, which is only 45 million budgeted film. It's made 49 million. See, that's what I'm talking about. We'll talk about no heart feelings in a second. $45 million budget. Okay. Transformers Rise of the Beast
Starting point is 00:28:01 close out to the top five with a further 7 million in his fourth weekend. A 200 million budgeted film is $136 million, 380 million worldwide. And then Wes Anderson's Asteroid City hit its limit with a 3.8 million turnout in its second wide weekend. It's made 18 million domestically and 29 million worldwide.
Starting point is 00:28:21 All right. Yeah, it's still this long gone are the days where everything is just pumping out big numbers left and right. People are very choosy now with, especially when you've got all these different streaming services and all these different things that you're paying for every month. And you have all these different options and all these great shows that you can watch. And you've got families to consider when you're going out and spending all this money. do you want to go out and if you don't know what the hell
Starting point is 00:28:49 Louis Jojo Sammy the third Jr., the Cracken is doing and you never heard of that movie. It's like, what's a difference between that and watching something on Netflix? A new animated thing that comes out on Netflix. Why would you go see that unless you really just want to go
Starting point is 00:29:05 to the theater and take the family, regardless of how good it is? So it's got a lot kind of going up against it, plus it's a terrible title. So I haven't seen it. I missed the screening for it last week, And when I did, I was like, you know, if I do an out of the theater for this, do I feel like the audience is going to give a shit?
Starting point is 00:29:21 And in my head, I said no. And I feel like I would have been right. Would you have clicked on it? Let me know. Maybe I was wrong. But nonetheless, the Jennifer Lawrence one, and I know people are saying, of course, it only cost $45 million.
Starting point is 00:29:33 It was a romantic comedy. It didn't have these big CGI over-the-top action scenes. Yeah. It's like, let's, it is easier to greenlight a movie that's like, okay, we got the basic paint-by-numbered. here we go, this is what we want to do, and then throw a big action scene at the end. We'll throw a whole bunch of CGI on it.
Starting point is 00:29:51 It'll cost a little bit of money to do, but we'll make it back. And they take these big swings at these massive numbers, but look at this $45 million movie that Jennifer Lawrence did, right? So right now it's made almost the budget back or it just made it back or some $49 million, or whatever it did.
Starting point is 00:30:06 Now, it's going to probably cost like $50 to $100 in marketing, so it's got to hit those numbers in order to break even or whatever it might be. I don't know what the marketing was for the movie, but let's say it's $60 million for the marketing. And either way, hopefully it builds, and you've got a shot. Now, if these bigger budget action movies would scale down,
Starting point is 00:30:29 look even Transformers, right? 200 million to make that movie. 200 million. Now, I understand in 2010 why you spend that kind of money to make that movie because it's still in its prime. Prime. But now, same thing. scale it down.
Starting point is 00:30:47 And the money that it's made so far, that would be an additional 50 in profit that you would have made. Yeah, make it for 150. Stay away from these $200 million budgets. It's crazy. It's crazy. I think that the budgets are so overblooded right now, and it's too hard to make a profit with the audience going,
Starting point is 00:31:06 I don't want to see that. I don't want to go to the movies. It's too expensive. I don't like the way decisions are being made in Hollywood right now. It's a lot. It's a lot of comments from not everybody, but a lot of people. I don't know. That doesn't seem like it's the decisions behind some of the stuff that's being made, right?
Starting point is 00:31:29 It's like, why? Why are you making certain things? Is it IP? Is it because you, it's formulaic? Is it what? There's not enough. And I always push back against Hollywood doesn't make original. stuff. They make tons of original stuff. There's tons of original movies out there. Again,
Starting point is 00:31:48 whether it's on Netflix or Amazon or any of these things. There's tons of original things out there. There are a lot of remakes. There are a lot of reboots. There's a lot of these things for sure. And there's a lot of more money that is put in those things. That I will not push back against. But there's tons of original stuff out there. It's tons of original stuff that you guys don't watch. And a lot of people myself don't watch. Tons of it. But there is original stuff out there. And it's just like, it's like, it is cheap mentality. It really is, I'm sorry, but it's cheap mentality of just like, all they do is make remakes. And it's not all they do.
Starting point is 00:32:23 It might be the stuff that gets heavily marketed. It's the stuff that gets put a lot of budget into. Now, if someone says, they put too much money in remakes and reboots, hard to disagree. They just try to do sequels all the time and spend a lot of money on sequels when they could be spending more money on original material. maybe but to say that they don't make original material anymore that's that's simply not true they do there's tons of it um but there's a lot of stuff that gets remade rebooted uh like like barbie and and i guess that can kind of transition us into our next story let's talk about barby now barby is going to do very well in the theater it's it's tracking well people want
Starting point is 00:33:04 to see it it's got it's got a different it's got a lot of different audience um but how good it is i don't know. I look, I like Greta Gerwig, but I don't know anymore. I'm not going into these things anymore going, oh, this guy has so-and-so directed it. Like I said, I love Mangold, and I thought, and I had, and I had fun watching the movie. Do I think it's a Indiana Jones great movie? No, I think it's a good movie? I don't know. I had fun watching it, but it doesn't mean it's going to be a great movie because Mangold did it, and that's what I thought. I thought it was going to be a great movie. So, will Barbie be great? The Warner Brothers upcoming Barbie movie, however, it doesn't matter how great it is. No one's going to see it in Vietnam.
Starting point is 00:33:42 got banned. Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring the film and it is one of the more anticipated movies of the summer and it would have originally opened in that country on July 21st but according to variety the film contains a scene that depicts a map with the nine dash line. This represents
Starting point is 00:33:58 China's territorial claims in the South China Sea which Vietnam says violates its sovereignty. Vietnam cinema department director and minister of culture V. Ken Chethanhouton revealed on Monday that the ban was decided by the national film evaluation counsel. The state run
Starting point is 00:34:14 to a tree newspaper says, we do not grant license for the American movie Barbie to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine dash line. This is not the first time this has happened with the DreamWorks animated film abominal in 2019 and Sony's uncharted films, adaptation both banned
Starting point is 00:34:29 for the same reason. Barbie meanwhile will open in cinemas around the world from July 21st. I don't know. I'm not going to pretend I know enough about this situation to say my opinion on it. It's like if that's what, if it's happened before and they clearly have a stance on it, then they were probably, you would assume that Warner Brothers and they were aware of it because it happened before and like, well, look, if we do this, we're probably not going to be able to open in Vietnam.
Starting point is 00:34:54 And maybe they go, well, that's the case, that's the case. You would assume because if it's happened before, at one time it would, you know, it'd be one thing if it was like, oh, wow, we didn't know that they were, would ban it because of this. but it's happened before. So a few different times, you would assume. I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know, in the context of it. But nonetheless, the movie I still think is going to open really strong with or without Vietnam, and I think that it's going to be one of the bigger movies, and I think it offers a little bit of a different thing than animated and superheroes
Starting point is 00:35:29 and big kind of blockbuster spectacles, and maybe it's what people are kind of looking for, and it's got two really big movie stars with Gosling and Marga Robbie. And Greta Gerwig, directing this movie, this is one of her, this is her first, I think, will be massive movies. I mean, she got a lot of recognition on both Lady Bird and Little Women, which I like both of those films, and I liked her. I really like her as a director.
Starting point is 00:35:54 And I will say I met her once at the Critics Choice Awards. Very, very wonderful person. Just complimented her movie. She was so humble, sweet, nice. just someone you wanted to root for. So when she was announced to do this, I had my kind of vote of rooting, rooting for her.
Starting point is 00:36:15 I don't know if I'm going to like the movie or not. I think the movie looks interesting, but I want to see it. And I think Oppenheimer is going to be, it's going to be such an interesting race that weekend. But sticking with Greta Gerwig here, rightfully so, she's getting a lot of, she's getting a lot of offers now.
Starting point is 00:36:32 And this one I did, I don't think I would have ever seen. coming, Greta Gerwig is going to direct two new Narnia films. I thought Narnia was toast. I thought no more Narnia. Again, Dark Horizons, Lady Bird, Little Women, and the upcoming Barbie movie director Greta Gerwig is spearheading a new Netflix franchise of movies based on C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia book series.
Starting point is 00:36:53 According to The New Yorker, Gerwig has set a deal that will see her write and direct at least two movies based on the books, but it's not clear yet which books. It is also uncertain if this will be a continuation. of the three prior films, which began with Disney's The Lion, the Witch, and a wardrobe, followed by 2008's Prince Caspian, and 2010's The Voyage of the Dawn Traitor. The adaptation of The Last One followed up. The Silver Chair has long been rumored, but has never confirmed. Netflix took over the franchise in 2018 when announced plans to team up with the CS Lewis Company in a multi-year deal to produce series and movies based on the books. A year later, Cocoa, co-writer Matthew Allrich, boarded the franchise as a creative architect to oversee.
Starting point is 00:37:35 all developing moving forward. Gerwig was first linked back in November last year by what's on Netflix, but has been occupied with everything Barbie for some time. I'm going to give the same type of take that I gave when I was talking about the Henry Cavill situation in D.C. Let's reboot the whole thing. Reboot the whole thing. Don't continue on because the best story is the lion in the witch and a wardrobe.
Starting point is 00:38:02 And to be able to do it again and continue off and to have new actors and reconnect the thread and do all that is probably for the best because then you can franchise it again through Netflix and not be held to the things that came before it. I like, I really, the first, I like the first two movies. I liked Caspian.
Starting point is 00:38:23 The third one, nuts, I thought the third one was pretty dull. But the first two I enjoyed, but I think disconnected, completely, disconnected. and make it a whole brand new thing. Let credit Gourwick, let everybody over at Netflix create the world their way through their Netflix budgets, do everything you can, create shows out of it, create movies out of it, create all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:38:46 Don't continue it on from the Disney stuff. No need. Just start directly from, do it all over. Give us a new White Witch, give us new Caspian when it gets there. Give us everybody. Look, Liam Neeson's the best. find somebody else to do the voice. If I was going to guess, they'd probably get Idriselba is what they're probably going to do, I would assume.
Starting point is 00:39:09 Guys, voice is out of control, which I guess then can lead me into, and then we can get the hell out of here. I guess today, it would be a shorter episode. But I'm watching that hostage show on Apple. Apple's just doing it right. Out of all these streaming places, like Apple's just doing it right. They don't put out a ton of stuff, but when they do, it's so good. Like, the stuff that I've been seeing and stuff, like, I watched Black. on Apple recently and it was just
Starting point is 00:39:34 next level good shrinking love I know that a lot of people love Ted Lassow and I really got into it but I probably will give another shot but people love it rave about it the morning show but now this show hostage
Starting point is 00:39:52 is only two episodes in so forth and I think that it's the new one comes out tomorrow and I like that they do it weekly I was bummed though like last night I was watching, we were going to watch with my wife. I was like, oh, let's just watch a whole bunch of these. He's like, no, no, no, you got to wait, dumb, dumb, next week.
Starting point is 00:40:09 And Indyselba's just so good. I love Andrew Selba. He's so good. Such a good actor. He's just so, and he's, and he's likable. You believe him is, and there's some good moves. There's some good moves in it. What was the other thing?
Starting point is 00:40:21 Oh, my, my daughter last night, and this is, I was, I was in, I was in, I just wasn't in the mood to watch anything except what I wanted to watch last night. And my daughter, to her credit, kept pushing me. She watched this movie that his animated film that she kept pushing me on. I'm like, I don't want to watch this right now.
Starting point is 00:40:41 And she's like, you gotta watch it with me, that come on. And it's a pneumonia. And I started watching a little bit. And I was, and it was good. It really was. For when I started, it was good. But I was just like, I don't want to watch this.
Starting point is 00:40:52 I just don't want to watch it right now. She's like, fine. Go watch it by myself. She left. And I was like, and I literally, right before I started the show today, I apologize to her. Because I was like,
Starting point is 00:40:59 you watch all this shit with me all the time. I'll watch the movie with you. It was pretty good. I'm going to watch Namoa with her. And it's interesting. And I saw Mike Vogel, who did the animation, but the original designs, I should say, for Shoes and Beef, who was on Geek Buddies with Roka.
Starting point is 00:41:16 And I said him tweet about it as well. So I was like, yeah, I got to, I, my daughter watches everything with me. And I got to watch it with her. One thing she really asked me to watch with her. Someone check out Namona, and that's on Netflix as well. I think that, too. Let me check at this on the end of the news. All right.
Starting point is 00:41:34 this one and I'm putting time codes in there so if there's it turns out to be like I don't know these are spoilers or not but they're saying Deadpool 3 cameo rumors heat up so if you don't want to hear anything about Deadpool or who could potentially show up or what rumors of casting then just skip the story because I'm going to read the article from Dark Horizons and if you don't want to hear anything about it I would suggest moving on okay you've been warned the third Deadpool movie movie is currently shooting in the UK so far they've not heavily impacted by the writer's strike, as the production has had to stick to the scripts that they have. Issues of making further changes have likely been lessened by the lead characters face-off.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Issues of making further changes have likely been lessened by the lead characters face off and been covered in a mask, and actor Ryan Reynolds doing ADR once the strike is over. Various online forums have been discussing rumors of the cameos in the film, a rather wild list of names of potential characters to show up and satirize the trend of multiverse movies. The result is a whole bevy of rumored appearances. All right, and here we go. Again, spoilers, potential. Nothing's confirmed, but these are just rumors.
Starting point is 00:42:42 So if you want to hear them, there you go. Channing Tatum as Gambit to Ben Affleck as Daredevil, while this is all pure speculation, one of the earliest rumors regarding the film may hold weight. Deadpool updates reports that Owen Wilson posed for a photograph with fans in London the other day, adding evidence to the rumor that his Loki character of Mobius will appear in Deadpool 3.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Jeff Snyder reportedly first broke the news of Wilson's potential appearance back in March, with the time variance authority from the Loki series supposedly getting involved in Deadpool's multiverse interference. Wilson was last reportedly attached to Nancy Myers-Costly Paris Paramount feature at Netflix until the project was scrapped over budgetary issues. He'll be seen in the second season of Loki, which comes out in October. Deadpool is supposed to come out in May 2024. we're going to keep getting more and more of these rumors.
Starting point is 00:43:33 But this one makes sense to me. If you're going to continue, I mean, I think it's kind of a necessity at this point. What's the through line of all of this multiverse stuff that leads into whatever the Avengers movie is going to be, whether they change Kang Dynasty or not, or the multiverse saga, whatever it might be? They've got to connect it a little bit more, and I think that's season two of Loki is supposed to do that. So continuing, that makes sense, that Mobius would change. show up and I think seeing him with Wade Wilson would be fun to see Owen Wilson with Ryan Reynolds in this role would be would be great. So I think that makes a lot of sense and it's probably,
Starting point is 00:44:12 I think, I think some merit to it. But what do you guys think? Overall, what do you guys think? What do you think about anything that we talked about in this episode today, whether it's the Indiana Jones stuff, the Kathleen Kennedy stuff, box office in general, Barbie, Narnia, all. of it.
