Well, good morning.
How you doing?
Nice to see you.
I'm recovering from Star Wars Celebration.
We didn't have a episode from Monday.
And we normally don't do one on Tuesday.
So we said, let's do one on Tuesday.
That's what we're doing.
All right.
Let's hear.
Let's hear some advertisement.
That's what we need to hear.
Yeah, yeah.
Come on.
Shut up.
Stupid.
Okay.
So we got a big weekend that happened.
Obviously, a Star Wars celebration.
Then if you saw the title,
of this video. Top Gun just
completely annihilated
the box office as we were hoping it would
as it deserved to do
over 150 or 160, whatever
the official number was. Who cares?
It was a lot of money. And then the question
started to be
for all the people that were already
had seen this movie is just Tom Cruise's best
movie of all time.
And I think there's an argument to be made.
And we'll be making that argument with myself
and Winston and Coy, the rewatch team.
Winston ran into a rewatch fan yesterday.
We're going to make sure that person gets a nice shout out.
Did he tell me the name?
No.
And if he told me the name, what I remembered, no.
Why?
Because they're a terrible memory.
That's all I'm telling you.
It's the honest truth.
So today's going to be fun because we're doing this live.
We haven't done a live show in a little bit.
And so we will be taking super chats and super chats only, not doing stream labs today.
So super chats.
But if you put your questions in there now, we're going to collect them throughout the show.
And then we'll answer them at the end of the episode.
So we'll be answering them throughout.
So start putting them in now if you want to get your questions.
out there now the other thing to know is that we are really having a lot of fun in
this channel so far and if you haven't subscribed already please do so we got a lot of new
subscribers here over the weekend and I appreciate that very very much I'm excited for
this man the wish I knew shirts they are live they're up on the skybound store now you
can get them and you can also get show some class shirts as well so there's a few other
shirts are up there too but these are the two I thought were relevant well show some
class wish I knew course you Andrews
Winston Marshall, Winston A. Marshall. How dare I?
All right, here we go.
What's going on, everybody?
Welcome back.
We got the crew.
Yeah.
That's just, just sexy McNasties.
You got the poster?
Your head's so big.
What is going on over there?
Such a big head. I can zoom out. I don't know why I did that.
That's weird.
It's all right. I didn't mind too.
Oh, see, I did a little win now.
It's fine.
So we are not we were unable to
Be in studio today just because of it was kind of we wanted to make sure we talked about this movie
There was no doubt about it. We had the three of us said we had to talk about it one way or another
We're just getting back from Star Wars celebration. We're like what if we just do a
A live stream and that way we can have the fans kind of come in super chat some questions and and get involved in it
And let's get into it. So let me ask you Winston was I overhype in this movie? No
No, no you were
And you know that like I like Top Gun having seen it twice, but it didn't have the impact on me that it did on the two of you
You weren't kidding when you said this one of the best movies the last few years
I will go so far as to say that it didn't it didn't break my top ten
And it didn't beat everything everywhere all at once for me, but I would go so far as to say that it might be the best sequel I've ever seen
And it gets it gets brownie points above other sequel
that happened pretty immediately because it's been 36 years and they still found a way to
fully suck you in and get it done. And a lot of these delayed sequels do not hit at all.
Well, you know what they also do normally? These sequels, like, and I was even thinking about
they announced like Beetlejuice 2. And I was like, there's no way that what Beetlejuice 2 or the
Terminator movies or any of these movies should do is stick into the formula that made them
successful in the first place and scale it back and not have to commit.
to the way filmmaking is now made in 2022 with all the big CGI.
Because Top Gun Maverick could have easily added 50 or 60 playing battles and
CGI all over the place.
And it's certainly a bigger movie than the first one,
obviously with the budget that they have.
But, Coy, they use it in the right way with the practical effects that I'm hoping
that other movies start to follow suit in especially nostalgic movies like this.
where sticking to the thing that made them popular in the first place.
I think it not only being Tom Cruise's biggest movie opening ever,
but also the biggest Memorial Day opening ever will be,
I think there's going to be a lot of suits that go,
okay, what's the formula that got us here?
And I think in the age of nostalgia,
sometimes we lean into the wrong sides of nostalgia.
And I think in the age of using franchise IP,
sometimes we get lazy and it becomes about basically coloring in the circles,
like coloring in the dots.
and tracing. And instead of tracing, I do think making bold choices and making sequels as good as
the original a la T2, a la Aliens, a la Top Gun Maverick now on that very prestigious list, is going to be
the new standard. And I do think, and I hope in the next five years, we see a lot more legacy
sequels take themselves as seriously while evolving like Top Gun did. I do think this is as good a
movie as the first. I can't quite say better yet only because of my like 33 year love of the first,
but I will say that it gave me more emotional connection than any sequel has as an adult.
And that's saying a lot for me because I love Winter Soldier.
I love, you know, those things.
But those feel like they're part of a 30 plus unit hole, whereas this feels like when it's over,
that can be over.
And there's something really beautiful about that.
Yeah, it's two movies.
And scaling back to what you said, though, when it comes to the, it's funny when you hear
people say, well, I don't want to say it's better than the first.
And the only reason you're saying, you're not saying it's better than the first,
the only reason that I'm not saying it's better than the first is because you have,
for people who love the first movie so much that you don't,
you almost don't want to feel like you're disrespecting it by saying it.
It's a better movie than the first movie.
It's a much better movie.
The first one's good, but this is great.
I love the first movie.
The second movie is a better made film.
It is a better written film.
It is more relevant to,
even like I was just saying, relevant in the way,
filmmaking is made now because we have evolved as how we like to take in stories from how we did
in the 80s we were a little bit more acceptable on some you know subpar writing or some cheesy
things here and there but we've we've asked for more in our movies and top gun maverick gives us
more and it gives us more in the evolution of character throughout through establishing team through
establishing emotion uh i just can't believe how good it is overall i've only seen a few
people um who are wrong rb three uh tweet out about
certain things. Well, mostly it's been, it's been, it's been unanimous. How many people like kind of
love this movie? Yeah. I mean, go ahead. Go ahead. I was just going to say it's such a
beautiful story because it's so universal. Like, I've seen it twice. And the first time I saw it was in a
regular screen. And I knew I needed to see it again, like prime Dolby experience. But the second
time I saw it was really beautiful to kind of like catch other people's reactions. Like now that
I'd seen it, I knew it was coming. I knew what to experience. And it's such a universal.
experience of just awe and wonder and emotionality and connection. And I do think it tells a more
universal story. I think the sequel, the sequel story is for everyone. And I also like that it didn't
feel quite as like, you know, propaganda. This didn't feel like a Navy commercial. Like,
there are things that sell better here that are more approachable while also being one of the best
blockbusters of all time. Like, it's still a blockbuster film, but it's got so much underneath that,
which is what movies should do if they can. No, a thousand
And I think, I think honestly, I'm probably the best control of this to really also just to go back to what you were talking about, Christian, about is this better than the first?
Because you were just saying, you know, obviously the tapping into the nostalgia.
Again, the fact that I only saw Top Gun a couple years ago, again, like a week ago.
And I like it.
Again, they're good.
This is, I can far and away say, I'm not tied to the nostalgia.
You know what I mean?
And, like, I genuinely think that.
that this is a far superior movie.
And it doesn't mean that that one's bad.
It's just they, if that was a home run, this is a grand slam.
Like it's really that much of a difference in my opinion.
Yeah, I mean, I agree.
And I think that there's just so much.
And so let, to let people know, by the way,
we are going to be doing a spoiler conversation for sure.
So if you want to send in your questions towards the end of the show that we'll get to about Top Gun,
you can.
But also to know that you should, if you want to ask stuff about Obi-Wan,
or the Andor trailer or celebration or anything along those lines also put that in there because
we'll be covering all that as well.
But we wanted to get into the conversation on Top Gun Maverick because we finally, the three
of us had seen it.
We did our rewatch on it.
So we figured we talked about it today.
The other thing that I would, that I think we'd just go to the conversation that I
post in the, in the thumbnail and the title of this episode, Tom Cruise has had a lot of
great hits, man, over the year.
And people are saying like he's still the big true movie star.
And he is.
There's no doubt about it.
And so is Dwayne Johnson, I think.
But I still stick by the fact that it's not necessarily the star themselves that get people in.
Because the movie star back in the day, the definition of a movie star was, doesn't matter what they were in.
Doesn't matter what they were in.
You'd go and see him because you go, oh, it's the new Tom Cruise movie or it's the new Gene Hackman movie.
or it's the new, you know, Sandra Bolic movie or it's the new whatever that.
I don't know what it is.
It's the new star.
It's the new movie star movie.
Nobody can do that anymore.
Not even Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise, it's not, you don't say, oh, it's a new Tom Cruise movie.
Oh, Top Guns coming out.
And I hear it's awesome.
And this badass who's 52 years old still jumping off cliffs is in it.
Mission Impossible is a franchise movie.
Mommy didn't do very well.
And that's Tom Cruise.
There's a lot of movies that Tom Cruise did that,
But what he did that was very smart.
If you wanted to find a movie star as far as choices go, as far as business-wise, he's the best.
There's no doubt about it.
Even better than The Rock, he's the best because he knows how to navigate and maneuver.
So the question is not in performance, but as far as overall movie goes is Top Gun Maverick, Tom Cruise's best movie.
We start with Coy Jandreau.
yes or no and why not or why?
I think it's top three and I need to revisit my other two
but it's mainly because I don't want to have recency bias
on something that I had such an emotional connection to
because I was fully emotional throughout this movie.
I was fully gobsmacked by that existed.
So I need to revisit like two of my others
and there's also like some of the older films that are
I don't have the same connection to like the firm or Rain Man
that I love, but I also like, I can't give myself.
Like, I don't have the same connection to Rain Man from that era as I do Topka.
But I think for me, it's got to be a conversation between collateral,
Tropic Thunder, and this.
Like, those are my three.
Would you call the F out of my head?
Would you call Topic Thunder?
Would you call that a Tom Cruise movie?
I mean, I mean, it's one of his best performance.
That's what I'm saying, though, not performance-wise.
I'm talking about overall best.
movie. I mean, I guess if he's in it,
he's also in it in the big enough way
that it got him back. I would argue that's
the movie that saves his career after the coach,
I have also have to ask you,
Christian, so what are you putting this rubric
by? Because you said Tom Cruise movie, he is in the
movie and he's one of the main stars.
I mean, he's not one of the main stars, but he's one of the
big, he's one of the big, if you're not talking about the big,
if you're not talking about the big three of
Stiller, uh, he's what he's
one of the ones that you talk about. There's, there's no
this and Magnolia are similar
screen time. You know, Magnolia is a big push too.
I'll allow it.
Motion passed.
So if it was,
Winston, go ahead.
So you're going to copy the same three?
I would say he's got like at least one other in there.
So you said Tropic Thunder and Collateral.
I would also throw in Minority Report just based off.
Ooh, look at that.
We got a little bit of spam.
That's cute.
But I think when you're when you're really thinking about it,
all three of those movies,
Tropic Thunder Collateral and Minority Report, you think about those.
Those are like iconic movies.
They may not have done gangbusters the way that this is going to do and it is already done.
But if you're just talking about as a solid movie, Minority Report, I am thinking about that movie once a week as well as collateral.
They both are in my top sci-fi movies ever.
Or not collateral.
I'm sorry, that's more of a thriller.
But I'm saying for each of their genres, they have made it to like my top of the genre.
and this is definitely going to be up there for like your kind of action or like war military stuff.
But like I just, I think again, to not go into that recency bias, you're seeing not just incredible performances from Tom Cruise in all of the films we named, including this one.
You're seeing the entire rest of that film being held up by such an incredible team.
I think this is just on a different echelon as far as like the dog fighting and the flying and all that does put it at a slight.
different level than like him, you know,
being like an assassin in a club
and shooting people. You know what I'm saying?
Or him in an office dancing and cussing somebody out.
It's just a different flavor, I guess.
It is. And we're not even talking about Edge of Tomorrow
Mission Impossible's during the wire.
Like, that's crazy.
But that's where I'm,
see,
that's where I'm going.
So for me,
I have a,
I'm trying to think of which ones I would put in there because as great as I
think he is again in born a fourth of July or collateral or those movies.
in general, are those movies that I'm rushing out to see in the theater again right away the
next day? Collateral is a fantastic movie. It's not a movie that you are hitting the soundtrack
too and feeling good about it, moving around. It's dark. It's a great movie. It's a great movie,
and it's a great performance by him because he changes up that image of Tom Cruise, and it's
fantastic, and I'm not going to argue with anyone who puts it as their number one. And even Mission
Impossible Five is probably the closest one.
to me that you can say, okay, well, look, that is one that you can, that is such, that's the,
just reinventing that franchise and he goes above and beyond in those, but I think that for me,
Mission Impossible. And I, and I say this, this isn't a bad thing, but they all kind of kind of,
they similar to born where they can blend into each other where you, if I, if I mentioned,
hey, remember when that thing happened? You'd say, well, which one did that happen in?
You know, as, um, so for me, I think the two that really, and there's a ton of other ones,
too. I, I happen to really like, I mean, minority reports a great one. Um, I happen to
really like an interview with the vampire and a lot of people don't put that one up there but i happen
to really like that one the original top gun but if i'm going to put the two up against each other in my
list i'm putting up um edge of tomorrow and i didn't think y'all would go for it i love edge of tomorrow
that's also up there for me tomorrow's is probably because it's a similar it's a similar thing to this
just not on the same level um and and then i would put this up there and i and i would be full
aware that recency bias is there, but I have not felt this way watching a movie for
take Tom Cruise out of there, take any one out of there. Like I, like I said, it's hard for me to
go back and go see a movie in a theater again if it's not for work. And I went back right
away to see this thing. And I would see it again. Ellis has seen it three times already.
And it's just that experience that you go through. And edge of tomorrow, similar. I wasn't
expecting a lot out of it. I was excited for it, but I wasn't expecting anything. I've seen that
movie a handful of times, too. I got two beats. First of all, the edge of tomorrow that I saw
first was a work cut that was even better. So I have a slight trickiness with the edge of tomorrow they
released because originally the third act was longer and it was like aliens. So all of the Merks
and Assassins had a little bit more arc, a little bit more flourish. And that was really special.
So it's hard like, you know, when you see a cut of a movie, then you see one that changes and you're
like, ooh, I don't like that they trimmed. But I still think that's a
four and a half star film. I think Tropic Thunder is the only one that's like a solid five,
but I do see how like it's not the Tom Cruise of that movie. So I have to asterisk that.
That said, it's really hard for me to compare Top Gun 1 to this and have like, you know, those
things. But I will say my second point being that in the theater, I don't think I've had
a movie in 10 years that I wanted to see by myself. Right. Because I didn't want anyone else's
opinion. I knew I would like maybe love, but I didn't want anyone else to even have impact on
my experience in the moment after the moment. It's the first time in forever. I usually go to Marvel
movies with friends. I was like, I want Top Gun to be my church. I need to not share this. I need
to pray to the deity that is my F-18s. Like I needed that to be my experience. And then I got that.
And then I was like, oh, the second time I'll bring friends. And then I ended up being like, no, I think
this is for me. And I don't often because of our line of work have movies that I don't want other people's
takes on for a bit because it's mine.
Right.
Yeah.
I was going to say the only thing that you said earlier, Christian, about some of these
movies we mentioned, you don't go running back to the theater to see.
I push back on that a little bit only in the sense that like I wouldn't go rushing back
to see either of the godfathers if I just saw them in a theater just because of their runtime.
I wouldn't go back and rush to see, you know, Fruitville Station just because of how heavy it is.
but both of those movies, all three of those movies are considered three of the best of all time.
You know what I mean?
So, like, I don't necessarily use that as a rubric just because of that.
But that's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying for you, right?
Like for, and that's where I wasn't coming from, from a try to convincing anybody.
This is more, sure, sure.
This is more so for me of why I thought it was just a great movie in general,
because I like the way it made me feel.
I like the way that it reminded me of why movies are made.
in general and it also there are and even those mentioned movies that you mentioned like there's things in
the godfather i just watched godfather recently um and it's it's one of the best of all time but there's
still things inside of that movie i feel sometimes where i'm like you know i'll watch it i'm like
okay this is the part when he's in when he's in uh italy and there's a couple things there that
it's fun to watch and i'm and i'm always watching it but it's like there are slow parts in that
movie and that's fun that's what make up to it there's just for me top gun maverick both times
are watching i'm not saying top gun maverick is a better movie than godfather take it easy
What I'm saying is,
you've got to be applied it.
I'm saying is the experience of watching it, right?
It's like I've never,
there was never a time I felt anything was slow.
I felt like everything delivered.
I felt like all these things were,
it just was an experience for me
that I haven't had watching a movie in a while.
And it also will pose another question after we,
we finish this.
But it just is so, I don't know,
it's just so new and so different.
And I'm seeing a lot of the super chats come in about the questions.
And don't worry,
just a reminder, if they're like, hey, come not answering the questions yet.
We're going to wait towards the end of the show.
And then we're going to, we're compiling all the super chats to come in.
And we will answer all the questions at the end of the show.
So two quick things.
The first, I want to do this now before I forget.
Shout out to Andrew at the Weho Best Buy.
Thank you for your help.
He actually made a joke.
He goes, I love the rewatches.
And I, you know, I asked him to find me something.
He's like, I couldn't find it.
So I'm just brought you a copy of Top Gun just because I figured like, you know,
Christian would appreciate that.
And I was like, hey, you know.
So shout out to Andrew.
Appreciate your help, man.
Thank you for watching the show.
But then the other thing, I'm curious, Christian, what would, for both of you, actually,
what was your audience experience like?
Because mine was hilarious.
I went to two critics screening.
So it's harder to say.
But I mean, this, the, you know, Ellis is funny because I ran into, I mean,
I hung out with Ellis Hall celebration.
He was just like, dude, you have to see it in a, in it with a crowd, like a paying crowd.
like people there to see he goes people are he's like high-fiving strangers and people are are excited and
and he said it was like it was like unity it was like go at real talk and for me this was right up
there with my experience with go get out in black panther where in both of those cases obviously
very black movies so you got a lot black folk be like oh hell not man you better get out like you
know very but like same thing in this i found myself be like oh shit like in the middle of the film and
someone laugh and there was this sweet of where
right at one point when uh when he was uh near the kind of end part where he gets shot down
trying to save goose or save rooster like literally the abuela goes hey oh my oh i was like yo i know grandma
it took that out it put you in that kind of mode you're you know what they did so well was
the way that they set up the mission from the second maverick is presented with it with john ham you know
like it was going to run it i had a feeling i had a strong feeling he was going to end up running it
Yeah, well, of course.
They also said, like, someone's not coming back from this.
And you felt like that foreboding was about a legacy sequel character.
Like, it's a movie where he could have died.
How many times did they set up that someone was going to die?
And I had said this in the spoiler review with Ellis.
And then people are like, nobody died?
Val Kilmer died.
I'm like, yeah, I know.
But I'm talking about like on the mission itself, right?
Like, they set up a few times where they had kind of looked like they were going to repeat a couple of beats that they did from the first movie.
And when it looks like the one pilot is going to die.
when he's going up and he passes out and then it turns out that like oh no and then and then um it was it
phoenix and then phoenix when the birds hit her and you're and you're like oh it she's
all the phoenix and bob right they were because they're being it's and bob and you're like oh
because the way that they set it up is like okay so uh so who what's so what's the black dude's name that
went up his call sign that went up or uh it's payback payback so payback um i could ask boy that
also um i just thought about it like it like wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait i wanted to put you i wanted
put you on blast i mean j ellis the actor but yes yeah yeah yeah yeah so payback when he goes uh
they set that up man that it looked like he was he was going to go and then they were going to go
and then they said other he that uh maverg was going to go it was it was really well written
my my audience experience was i i so like i said i intentionally skipped the critic screenings
and then i couldn't make a time to san diego for the premiere because i had the doctor strange stuff
So I was like, I want to see this with the exact right crowd.
So I saw it on a Wednesday night screening like the like actually I think one that like Winston,
we want to just miss each other.
I went to like the AMC investor screening like an early thing.
And then I went to Sunday night because I thought I'd catch the diehard top gun people and
then the Memorial Day crowd.
And the Memorial Day crowd.
I saw like it looked like a dad that had served and a younger like guy in his 20s like shaved head.
And like at the end they just like stood up and hugged each other.
They were like four down for me.
And I just saw this like beautiful.
father-son moment. And I was like, God damn.
Like, movies bringing people together like that is what I love.
And there's some movies either outright
like skip the critic screenings.
Because like I don't want to experience it the first time with judgment.
Like that's just not for me.
So I highly recommend.
I will say,
there didn't seem like a lot of judgment at the,
the act. It seemed like everybody was enjoying it as well.
It just didn't seem that kind of like,
you know,
hollering and people going nuts and all that type of stuff.
But I see more people who put in minority report as one of his best.
I like that movie. I don't love it.
I like it a lot.
But I certainly think this is, I mean, Winston, you and I can argue at another time.
I think this movie, I think Top Gun Maverick is far superior than Minority Report.
I like the Rock of Age's Love I'm seeing.
That's what I'm that.
That 80s rock out.
I think you're totally entitled to that.
And I think there's a number of things that play there.
I know one, obviously, is your love for this particular franchise.
But I do think there's a lot of things about this movie that are done so much better than Minority Report.
but if I'm talking about overall,
so the story,
like any of the suspense involved in it,
stuff like that,
for me,
I still give it to minority report.
Fair.
See, yes.
The suspense to me and everything,
the character was just,
there's more,
that movie just kind of relies on Tom Cruise.
This movie relies on,
on everything,
because the relationship between him
and Jennifer Connelly
and the relationship between him
and Miles Teller,
I thought that Glenn Powell does a phenomenal job as hanging.
Yeah.
Yeah.
A lot of new,
the way they introduced a lot of people.
Don Ham. Don Ham came out swinging, bro.
Danny Ramirez.
I mean, there's so many.
It's just everybody delivered that they were supposed to in this film.
I also really enjoyed the metaphors for what the movie theater experience.
Like, it feels like Tom Cruise was defending movie stars.
Like there were so many lines of dialogue where it's like, it's over for blah, blah, blah,
insert movie star here.
And he's like, but it's not today.
Like it felt like we were like saving some of like every moment that was like,
we filmed this practical.
We're doing this movie.
It felt like what Top Gun was was the exhibition line of cinema because Tom Cruise is such a like movie theater guy.
So I felt like so many moments were like a metaphor for what it is to be an aging movie star, what it is to be someone who does this skill set, what it is to not be on TikTok.
Like it felt to me like we were defending cinema itself at times and that was beautiful.
Yeah.
I got a question.
Did they play for y'all the kind of premiere footage before your movie started?
it was that for the early event. Okay, so they did this whole thing, which actually really got me
even more hype where they went through the premieres throughout the world. So off of a U.S.,
they had a legit U.S. Navy like ship that they did for the OG world premiere on, but then they
went to London and they went to Brazil and they went to all these countries. And they were talking
about the history of it. And they were talking to all the new actors and what it meant to them,
you know, all, a majority of them already successful in their
own right. I mean, obviously, Miles Teller,
uh, you know, Glenn Powell,
John Hamm, uh, even Jay Ellis,
who like, I'm going to know way more than y'all would just because of
insecure, but like that show obviously had, you know,
nominated for multiple Emmys and stuff. So all of these actors have really done
their thing, but this is above all of them. Even Tom Cruise himself, even though
he was the centerpiece of that little mini documentary before, I think what also
makes this movie so great other than it being a great movie because you had to
knock that out of the park, is that it, out of the park is that it is,
It almost felt the way Infinity War and Endgame did as far as how much hype is built in to waiting for this.
I was thinking Star Wars.
I kept thinking like these are like the fighter pilots.
This feels like an X-wing fight.
This feels like it felt like that eventized cinema.
You know what's funny though when you mentioned Star Wars and you ultimately think that Marvel and DC,
those are the movies that right now you have the best shot of making money if you put them in the theater right now.
right like those are the movies that everything else you you put a Marvel movie out with i mean look look at dr strange
multiverse of madness right that movie to me over the last that in Eternals are two movies that were pretty
split amongst fans and critics and yet it's still the multiverse is going to make close to a billion
dollars i give Eternals a little bit more of a pass because it was still in the height of everything
kind of going on with um people reluctant to get back to the theater and all that it was a longer movie um but this
move but but the reason I bring that up is that it's it's just like it seems to be easier for because
they've established themselves through the amount of movies that they've done and and and you look at
the Batman you look at these movies so it's harder so when a movie like um lost city or whatever the
hell that movie was called uh with uh Sandra Bullock which I liked that movie did really well because
it was something to switch it up and romantic comedy and then you put this movie out there with
the movie star like Tom Cruise and it also proves that because of this mission impossible now is
looking pretty mission impossible is looking pretty mission impossible is looking
I mean, because of the trailer that came out, for sure.
But now that Tom Cruise has reestablished himself yet again
and put himself in one of the best movies.
This movie, people are talking about like Academy Award type stuff.
I feel like the Academy is going to go,
um, top gun,
we can't nominate a top gun in the movie.
It'll get the same treatment as other franchise films.
Probably.
I want to have a little faith here.
If anybody's going to get anything,
you're obviously going to get maybe like editing, sound effects.
like visual effects.
But I think if you're talking, if it's sound,
sound, sorry.
Yeah.
But if anybody, I think, acting wise,
it may just be Miles Teller.
You might, you might,
because of, because of what it meant for Val Kilmer and all that as a legacy thing,
they may, they may give him a supporting actor nod,
like a la kind of Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross,
like he's not in it very much, but the impact and what it took.
And Hathaway won for one song.
Yeah. She sang one song and died.
Spoiler alert.
Yeah. Right. I'm sorry for those. We're doing our lay miss.
Yeah, big lay miss fans and Top Gun Maverick.
Sorry for the spoilers on the lay miss.
But bro, I just got to, I, I am grateful that y'all made me, you know, I need to finish it,
but you made me start the Val documentary because that that is the part that actually had me
hardcore crying from the minute he was on screen and like I was just streaming tears the whole scene.
I had like three, four rounds of tears in this movie.
Like there were so many different impactful moments and different kinds of tears, like different
flavor teams.
Well, Coy, I'm going to give you some more tears because you're going to need this,
especially your video editing is getting better on what the stuff that you do and your camera
and your sound is even better today.
Thank God.
It doesn't look like you're broadcasting from a potato.
So let's see about story blocks, everybody.
If you hadn't already heard about story blocks,
I've been telling you guys about story blocks.

It's really, really great.
And I was very happy to have them on as a sponsor when they told us because that's like, this is what we do.
You know, so video is the most effective way to capture an audience's attention in the first place.
And as a result, modern storytellers, they're always challenged with creating more video content at a higher quality, involving more voices in the process and distributing on more platforms than ever before.
You can meet output demands, time, budget, knowledge, creative inspiration, especially you don't want to get burnt out.
and your mental health, you know, you have stuff that you just, you have it at your fingertips.
And StoryBlocks makes it possible for creators to keep up with the growing demands for modern video content
so you can bring all of your stories to life and stop sacrificing your vision due to time, budget, and resources.
So you go to storyblocks.com slash big thing and you check out storyblocks and sign up for their
unlimited all access plan.
One more time, that's storyblocks.com slash big thing.
The link is in the description.
I'm telling you, check this out.
It is perfect.
I thought of Corey and Winston Media.
And I'm doing it right now.
You should multitasking.
Yeah.
When they told us that Storyblocks wanted to come on board as a sponsor, I was like, yes.
I didn't even have, I didn't even have to like hear the rest of like, well, they thought that you really like your show.
We're in.
This is what our audience does.
So storyblocks.com slash big thing.
Do it.
All right.
So in the conversation of, oh, a reminder, I'm seeing people who have submitted the super
chats.
Yes, we will be getting those probably towards the right towards the end of the episode will be
answering your question. So I'm going to shut them off soon. So if you want to get the
super chats in there, let's say by 1145 is probably the cutoff. Also shout out to my mom. She's in
the chat. She's the reason I'm a Top Gun junkie because she was the exact. My mom was young
when she had me. So she was the exact right age when Top Gun came out. So I grew up with it like
it was my generation's movie even though I'm not from the 80s. Like I was born in 88. It was 86.
But she loved it and like lost her mind and bringing my dad to it. And I'm really excited. So much love
Do you see it? Have they seen it yet?
My mom's seen it three times.
Wow!
Yeah, she's in Ellis.
She's like ahead of the curve.
And my dad's trying to make time because they're going to go see it together.
So I think my mom married my dad because he looks like Tom Cruise because of Top Guns.
So this movie says a large impact in my life.
Yeah, it's so good.
It's funny.
I do see like one person in here saying that people are overrating it.
I couldn't disagree more.
I think this is a movie that is completely lives up to the hype that
has been put with it.
Someone said some are Blockbuster that had no villain.
I was like, there's so many villains.
It's just not a mustache furling singular villain.
Yo, like, and that's my big thing.
Villains don't always have to, like, because again,
I hate to keep tapping the same well here,
but like Fruitville Station, for example,
the villain there is, there's no villain,
but the villain there is just like the society
that allows someone to get shot on a train.
You know what I'm saying?
Plenty of movies don't have a,
I'm Thanos, I'm gonna blow up the universe.
Like, it's for the,
best because the world doesn't always have a singular villain.
Like that's not right.
It's a matter of, are you, are you on board with the, with the journey?
That's, that's the, that's what it needs to come to be.
It's like, you don't, you don't need, you don't need a full on.
That's, that's, that's the problem that we're trained in this, like you said,
Thanos and Joker thing.
Like, who's the, who's the, who's the big bad?
It's like they have a mission of what they have to do.
And what they did, I think smart was they don't really put a key on who it is exactly.
So they don't want to get themselves in trouble with, with, with, uh,
We know that it's a NATO enemy.
We know that for sure.
And they have to go in there and there's a place that they're going in.
And then that's the whole thing.
I would put dollars to donuts Christian.
I mean, one, someone says, if you don't name a particular enemy,
you could, this can be a timeless movie.
And I agree with that.
Because sometimes you look at some of the older films and you're like, ooh, that doesn't look great.
But there was somebody, I was talking to somebody about this.
And they were like, I bet you they were probably going to say Russia.
before and then shit popped off and they said i'm gonna need you go ahead of that out real quick
let's just go voice over 80 isn't that bizarre though because back in the 80s when we were when russia
was the enemy uh everything was russians red red dawn was the russians like every top gun was like
rocky four movie rocky four i mean this the the russians were always the the it so maybe two
but i i think i always think i do think that it was probably just them saying let's let's let's
just keep it. It doesn't need to be. It's not, it goes into that, that comment. It's not the point.
The point is unity. The point is trusting in your wingman and trusting in yourself. And,
and also it was such a nice juxtaposition of what they had to do with Maverick from the first
movie, transitioning him into this movie. And the idea when you look at it, because Hangman
is a mixture of young ice and young Maverick in the same person.
like he does all the stuff that i mean he's as good as ice man was but he's but he's as reckless
as maverick was when he when he came in you know um and then i also liked because i thought that was
what rooster was going to be like i thought rooster was going to be the cocky kind of maverick type and
he's not he's more like his dad he's just more he's a little more reserved and he doesn't want to get
himself in you know in trouble which the other thing that was interesting is because and maybe
you all know more about this but the people that are typically writing backseat they don't normally
I'm assuming they're also pilots.
They're just obviously not the better of the pilot
that normally is in the front of the
topic, no?
Say that again, Winston?
So like Goose was also a pilot,
but he's not as good of a pilot as Maverick,
which is why he navigated.
Which is why I navigate. Okay, I'm just making sure.
But that was the other thing that was interesting
is the fact that they were going with a blend
of solo pilots and then duos.
And the fact that Rooster was flying,
whereas obviously his dad didn't his dad was working as a navigator for him from maverick and whatnot so all of that was
kind of interesting yeah i did too and then so i don't know what this um let's see michael k is this an ad i'm
assuming he's talking about story blocks i have no idea so is this an ad it also like i like i like
we were more since it didn't have a singular villain focused on the character arcs of their own like
journey again it felt like a conversational mortality and aging and what it means to evolve and all those
things and even seeing Mavericks evolution, I don't think if we had a singular villain,
it would have worked. Like, I don't think the film format. Like I also, it was nice to have
something to feel unique and that it wasn't at a directive. I like that it wasn't just a dogfight
movie, but we still had the big setup to the third act, which had all the emotional stakes
from the first two acts and then the dog fight. And there's nothing quite like the third act
in this movie. Bro, because like the thing that got me is automatically I'm like,
y'all ain't going to be able to take off. Okay, you took off. You better not have nobody
figure out what the hell is going on with y'all.
And then it's like, oh, God,
we're flying a plane from the 80s against some 20-22 fires.
And that nostalgia is how I want nostalgia.
Seeing him.
Everything about that scene, the fact that he's in an F-14,
which is the original plane from 86.
And then the fact that Goose is in,
goose's son is with him in the back.
And he's trying to navigate through.
And it's like all of it.
And then he's got a-
He's happy to talk through.
Everything.
And that he can't bail out.
He can't do the thing.
And then like the fact that he sacrificed it,
tried to sacrifice himself three times, which is what it wanted to do for Goose.
Yeah.
The only part that I was nervous about and they got away from it really quick where I thought
it was going to turn into a Mission Impossible movie was when he, when Maverick ejects and
then Rooster comes back to save him and the helicopter's firing it Mab and he jumps over
the, he jumps over the thing.
And I'm like, oh, is this?
Quickly.
I was like, is this Ethan Hunter or is this is this matter?
Yeah, because Pete Mitchell would only be able to do that tree jump.
That's the end.
Like, you know what I mean?
He's a pilot.
He's dead after that.
He's dead after.
that he just got you got thrown out of a bar
like 40 or whatever like a week before right in the air
do not test his ability on a round against the patchy helicopter
right uh i i love that we also had that beautiful moment with hangman
because like when they grounded hangman i got i got a glen pal bias but like at the same
time we got that same moment of like suspense suspense suspense suspense and that's him
learning his lesson like he didn't leave someone out to hang like there's so many moments of
just like and with a bow on it right and that i think that was that was that was another one
of those and this might just be, you know,
the more films I watch, but
especially as I'm writing more, like,
that was another one that I saw coming a mile
away, but it didn't make it any less satisfying.
Yeah, like, I, like, I thought maybe one
of them, yeah, I thought one of
them might die. There was a few times.
Yeah, there was a few times that Maverick, they set up,
like Maverick's going to go, because when he's talking
to his bud from the beginning, look, and by
the way, when that, that scene,
we didn't really talk about it with the opening
scene with Mach 10 and all that and how he,
setting him up again that he's still he's still pushing it and it's like he had it just he just
can't he's the fastest man alive but then he's like he's got to go faster and he's got to do it again
and even and it was funny because even though he blew up this billion dollar plane that was
ed harris is still like all right well you saved everybody else's job he did oh wow okay
he's the fat but it should how much the ice man was able to save his ass like so many different
time. Yeah, the fleet of the entire Pacific
Coast is the only reason because the moment
Val died, he's fired. Like, the whole
Navy's waiting to fire Pete. Like the whole time.
Well, look, so once
again, we're going to shift real quick into
Star Wars Celebration and
Obi-Wan and some stuff that we
didn't get a chance to cover together.
And then that's going to be brief. So if you guys
were about to shut off Super Chat, so if anyone
that come on in, send them
in now, any questions that you have.
And again, it could be about Star Wars. You can be anything you
want. But we're going to, we're
to wrap it up pretty soon. Yeah, go ahead. My last beat on Top Guns, so sorry. I wanted to say,
I love that we got this new crew that felt like they could also continue the legacy, which
made the suspension of disbelief about Maverick dying even better. And a lot of movies that
have Tom Cruise in them, it's hard for anyone to get their time in the sun. So I was really
impressed at Phoenix and Bob and Hangman, like everyone being interesting enough that I wasn't
bored of them. Like, I was genuinely invested in the football scene. I was genuinely invested in
who got in. And I also think that that's a great way for people that didn't grow up with the
first one to be like, oh, I can identify with I've got this character. I've got payback.
I've got so I thought that was really well maneuvered, especially when you've got a movie star like
Tom Cruise. Agreed.
Is that your mama down there, your sister?
Stephanie's my mom.
Okay, word.
What up is, Jan Drew?
Biggest Top Gun fan ever.
Awesome. I love those. You got to have, we should do an episode with her and Ellis.
Yeah, we'll Skype them in.
hilarious. So, okay, let's, let's, Winston, I want to talk to you first about Star Wars Celebration,
because you were watching it from afar this weekend because you were at what so what did you see
kind of coming out of it that that stood out the big the big things that you were like oh wow i didn't
i didn't realize that that was going to happen or stuff that you saw that was released that you
were impressed with um i mean i'm i was already excited about a so katano uh so seeing some of the
stuff that they teased there was pretty cool um i was jealous of y'all getting the screening of
obi won early obviously it came out a few hours later so who cares uh
one way or the other, but it was probably was
very cool to be in a massive audience of people
to watch that. It was funny when Hayden
Christensen walked into the room and they gave him like
Oh, he did. Oh yeah, they'll watch
it. They'll watch the castel.
Right to the right of me. But it was
to Sam and Tomorah.
But watching, watching that, like that
was, to me it was like being in the premiere with
them. That that much was, but
yes, they released it right
after the screening aired. So, yeah.
Okay. Other than
that, I mean, uh, the,
believe it's what the the uh anders or anders uh show and or yeah and or looks good um other than that
i've missed a lot obviously since i wasn't at the convention it was more just peeping our people
being all over the place like shout out to ace who apparently killed god knows how many panels
he had a few panels yeah i hung out with him a couple times over the weekend he was just he was he was
doing very well panels and he sold out riley the star wars in 30 minutes they sold out or or was
Where room was packed, I should say.
And it was hilarious, really, really funny.
That show needs to be all over the country.
It was so good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, no, there, yeah, go, go.
I was just like, Coy, you covered it.
Now, I know I saw you in the panel on Thursday and at the screening.
Did you get to see any other panels?
Were you doing strictly interviews after that?
So I was doing Friday.
I was on the floor because I was helping box lunch out.
So I made it to a couple panels on Friday.
I made it to the 20th anniversary, attacked the clones panel.
I was at all the stuff Thursday and then I was at a couple of things Friday.
But my favorite thing was I got to see John Williams get wished a 90th birthday from Harrison Ford in my life change.
Like that when Harrison Ford was on the side, I was like John doesn't know he's here.
No, it's great.
Because like you and I both had good seats.
Like I saw Harrison and I was like, no.
And then the moment of pure emotion that came out of John Williams and then Harrison getting choked up was like seeing our childhood get to experience their love for each other in front of 4,000 of the people that
care most it was it was pure beauty it was it was the community experience that i love cons for i have a
bittersweet memory now of that whole thing because it was just incredible to watch and i had taped
um all three of his the things that he did and i put up the um john williams place the obi won
theme and it did like 300 000 views in like two days a lot of people put that up nobody's video
nobody's video was taken down except mine you
YouTube removed my video.
I don't know why.
They didn't even take away the,
they didn't even take away,
like normally they do like monetization or they share the monetization or
they just took it down.
They said it violates standards.
I'm like,
why it's,
here's these other 34.
It's literally the same video as these other four videos.
And what's the difference?
So like,
oh, we're looking into it.
I'm like,
come on.
In six months it'll come back up,
but it'll stay at exactly the video count it is now.
I'm,
Look, I'm trying.
I'm, we're appealing it.
I keep appealing it three times.
That's that I normally, I'd be like, oh, okay, well, they just, if everybody's video is just
getting taken down, it's because they just don't want it up there.
But they told us you can film it as long as it's not footage.
But that, I mean, that was, we got to experience.
I know the video harshness, but we got to experience the first time an audience heard
with an orchestra, the Obi-B-Won score.
And that's a 90-year-old man that, like, walked out looking, you know, 70.
As soon as he was composing, 40 years old.
Like the, the, the, the, he.
his body, his muscle memory composing, that guy was a spring chicken again.
That was such a magical thing to witness in person.
And then the 20th anniversary thing was really cool because I know the prequels have become,
you know, so beloved to a generation that is at these cons.
So being in a room where you can see Hayden still in disbelief that he's getting cheers.
You can see, you know, I'm sure Eud McGregor, you know, he said over and over again how much
it meant that the prequels have found their audience.
But Hayden Christensen is a perfectly nice guy who got ripped apart for 20 years.
So it's almost like he gets the reverse Vader arc.
It's beautiful to see people love on him publicly.
So like seeing him get emotional, seeing that experience,
I got to talk to him briefly after.
And we talked about like what it is to be at a convention as an adult and what his journey.
Like he's a really nice guy.
We had a good long talk.
It's funny.
It's funny.
It's funny that you say that too because he's clearly the most like anticipated like person that everyone's waiting for now too.
And again, if you haven't seen Obi-1, one and two, we're going to throw a couple spoilers here.
so you've you've been warned um so the so what i said people were asking me after a couple
people that i ran into and even fans that i ran into like what'd you think of um what did you think of
of obi one i said for me episode one i'm at around a 94 95 episode two i'm like 74 75 um because the
the first the first episode to me is was set up really well um i think the positives for
for me are
Obi-Wan and his
despair and again, spoilers
for people who haven't seen it. I thought the
actress that plays, Leah,
was great. And I think I see some criticism.
The 5%
one of the big reasons of the five,
the chase scene in the woods
is terrible. It's terrible.
Oh my God. It looks very
it looks very CW. It's terrible.
It also just doesn't make sense.
Now, fleas a little out
a place you could probably catch that i mean my my four-year-old tries to run away for me and before she's i can
just like kind of grab and i'm and i'm and i'm slow um i i'm i'm rooting for riva i am not there
with with ingram moses as an actress yet i just don't think she's um and i think it's more of a debor
chow i love debor chow but i think that it could be a a direction thing at the moment too she's
to me she's overcook and um um mad and i think that it's just telegraphing and
eventual face turn from the beginning of this thing. And it's like, it's just, it's just too
predictable at the moment with that. And I think that that's why the second one doesn't,
doesn't play for me as well as I wanted it to. I like where they're kind of putting her story.
If they deliver on it the right way, as long as she doesn't turn good, she turns good. I'm
going to be like, there. We saw that coming a mile away. But, uh, we talked about that weeks ago,
like that can say. Yeah, yeah, I'm worried about that. I would prefer if they're going to do this.
She doesn't need to go good, but she could just be done with the.
empire she can still be evil and just be like i'm just going to do my own thing screw you guys like
i would be totally that'd be much more interesting to have someone that was like a rebel evil like
you know to rebel against the empire not be a rebel well that's what a sod ventress kind of did also she
didn't i mean she kind of turned it wasn't like a full on good guy term but she just had enough
for she'll betrayed by the sith and she took off but there's so many like star killer
kilo ren vader like uh so many people just it's so it's so predictable um and i just it just it just
seems like they're going that route with her.
And I think that it's
just, I don't know, I'm, I'm
hoping, I'm hoping that I think
that, you know,
she can, she can turn it around
and they give her a little bit more to do.
And the thing with the Inquisitor, people are,
oh, the Grand Inquisar, they're going to retcon rebels.
They're not retconning rebels.
There's no, remember that that species has two stomachs.
A, and he's going to, he's going to heal,
or B, it's not him and it's somebody else.
They're not going to retcon rebels.
And if Darth Mall can come back with spider leg,
Right.
Oh boy can cut.
Yes.
He got cut in the show.
But I'm really enjoying the show.
I mean,
again,
that's the beauty of television as opposed to movies.
Did I like the second episode better than the first?
I didn't.
But the ending scene with with Vader in the back to tank and that creepy music,
it's like,
how are you not like anticipating that third episode?
Like, wow,
what's going to happen?
It's tonight.
It's tonight.
Holy crap.
It's right.
I'm so behind.
Because Friday, you know,
it's the winter.
they release so it's only four days it's right it's right so what what i think will be a big error though
is if they don't after they set up that whole vader thing if they don't give us an episode with vader
today i know it i know that it's i anticipate if you anticipate you're gonna bring down your
expectations no it's just that that's the way that they set it up also i don't want only
you only have six episodes right yeah yeah if you only if you only have six episodes we are
starting act two tonight you can't just wait to show like
Do not Rogue One this thing.
I will be, I loved that in Rogue One because it had nothing to really do with later at the time.
But if you try and do that shit here, I'm going to be, I'm going to have, I'm going to have issues.
Also, Hayden's been to like forefront that if they hold it to episode five and six with my press Hayden's done, we're going to feel like we got short change.
As opposed to Rogue One was a surprise.
Like this isn't a surprise.
I'm just saying, I'm just saying if they wait until episode four again because it's like, oh, you know what?
There's got to be, there's got to be consequences now or how's it going to play out now that.
that Riva has killed the Grand Inquisitor,
how's that gonna play out?
I don't wanna know about that yet.
It's like, that's the problem, I think,
with the whole thing.
I think that, as we mentioned,
I think that they're doing,
I think that they're doing Moses Ingram a disservice
by putting so much pressure on this poor woman's shoulders
right away coming into this when it's an Obi-Wan show.
And it's like, did you see that their posts today?
Yeah.
So Star Wars tweeted out,
you know, I can pull the whole tweet up, but like already they're almost doing like pre-damaged control because I guess people are already kind of coming for her.
And they essentially were like don't like do not come for her.
Absolutely do not do it.
Well, that's stupid.
I don't, the fact that people, not that Star Wars is, but the fact that fans are going after it's stupid.
It's like you can there are two sides to this, right?
The first side is you can like there are clear, there's clearly a set of people that are just going after the.
woman because of of of a she's a woman be because she's black woman there is and i hate to tell you
there is a a pocket of people that are doing that and but there is it is also fair to say that there
also are people who don't love the character yet i'm i'm one of them i am rooting i am rooting
for for moses ingram i happen to think she's very every time i see her in an interview and
every time i see her with hayden and and you in they have such a great dynamic and i i
And I think that she seems like she seems like a really, really wonderful person.
I don't know her personally.
But I'm just not blown away by the, by the A, the character, and B, the performance.
There's four episodes left.
I could come back to you guys and say, whoa, she really turned it around me in.
She's fantastic.
And I think it's fair, though, that you can also criticize the performance and not be classified
as the only reason that you're, you know, that you're not rooting for hers because.
But it's probably, it's tricky.
because there are people who are doing that.
Right.
Well, so they put out today, it was about 12 hours ago.
So it's about, it was around midnight, but they tweeted out,
you're proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Riva's story to unfold.
If anyone intends to make her feel in any way on welcome, we have only one thing to say,
we resist.
There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy.
Don't choose to be a racist.
And good for them for doing that.
Absolutely.
because I think that like I said,
there is absolutely
a bunch of people who are doing,
because it happens on.
It's long overdue.
It's long overdue.
100%.
Boyega,
Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran,
it is long overdue.
I couldn't agree with you more.
I just,
you know,
there's,
but there's,
you know,
it is,
like I said,
though,
it is tricky though
to where like,
you know,
when you're critiquing
and you're saying,
but I think there's a way
to critique the performance
and do it respectfully,
you know,
and do it in a way
that it's like,
and the same,
thing where you're looking at a at at look here's here's here's I think to me right now the if
I'm going to rank the performances in the show thus far obviously Ewan McGregor is number one um I'm
putting smits at number two Jimmy Smiths Jimmy Smiths is the best bail organa has been so
far since since he's been great in a lot of stuff but his dynamic with lea um and then I
put um well I probably shoot me and Joel ederson was really good I was going to say
Joel Edgerton really like I love that dude because of
yeah but it was so good to see him back.
I also, I know y'all aren't going to agree with me,
but I just considering what they decided to make the character,
I really enjoyed Camille Nanjiani.
That was fun.
I thought like I already know because I can see it in your face Christian
and I had a feeling when I was watching the character.
I've had, I heard your voice in my head being like,
this is, this is Amy CERC or Amy Sedaris all over again.
It was more, it was less of that and more of,
He's literally playing the same character.
He plays in everything he's in.
He, there is everything that he's in.
He was, and, and I actually liked him in the, in the first, in the first half,
better than I liked him in the first.
And the first half, I was like, I was like, oh, I turned on a new MCU show.
I didn't realize I turned on.
When you compare that scene with that humor, that forced humor of, here he is, he's
going to joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, joke,
as opposed to the scene with the Jawa, which was hilarious.
and just Star Wars humor,
that's what I was talking about,
like the difference of it.
I like him a lot.
I think he's great.
But that did not work for me.
That scene at all.
It was so,
it was so marvelous.
I do want to say broadstrokes.
Like,
I was a little worried about going to celebration.
Like,
while we're talking about celebration as a whole,
I was doing stuff with box lunch.
I was excited for a con.
I was excited to see my friends.
But admittedly,
the last five years of being online,
especially the last three years
because of the pandemic,
Star Wars is something I'm afraid to talk about.
Christian and I have talked about this where like I enjoy Star Wars, but since I'm considered an expert in comic books, people assume I'm an expert in this too.
And when you don't know like Chubacca's cousin, people get mad at you.
And it's a really, it can be.
Not always.
It's a game of Thrones also.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, but I'm saying like online Star Wars fans scare me.
It was amazing to be at celebration and to be reminded what Star Wars fans actually are.
Like the people that actually love Star Wars, not the people that love arguing.
Social media.
I'm telling you.
I get. It's social media.
I'm giving credit. No, no, I know you are.
But I'm saying it's, it's just, it's the proof that social media is a detriment to society.
Oh, it's the worst.
Because here's the, here's the reason why.
We were in the, we were in the convention center.
And the guy and the, and the guy, one of the hosts, he goes, he's like, you know, I was, I'm, I'm telling you right now.
This is being around all these people and talking to all these Star Wars fans.
And it's the most generous and great and open and fun community.
And I wrote,
their Twitter accounts.
Because I guarantee you the same,
there's some people that were in that room like,
hey, hey, hey.
And you're going to tell me,
I'd say that there are some people that were in that crowd
that were,
are miserable on Twitter and miserable on,
on all these platforms.
But it's just something about Instagram and Twitter and all that stuff.
I'd say like 5% to 10% of people in there are duplicitously evil at home.
But 90%,
I think it's the people that leave their homes are
generally more adjusted. Yes, because you're not, you're not a real person to them until you can touch or you can see. And it's just a, it's just a character or anything too. And you feel like there's someone that we met and this is, this has nothing to do with being a bad person at all. It's just showing kind of the difference of what social media does to a person, right? It's a person that we know who is a sweetheart of a human being, very shy, very shy. And when you meet this person, they're just kind of like, how's it going? How's it? And super nice.
will engage in conversation with you when you talk,
but not,
but more of like an introvert and not,
and not someone who's going to be out there,
but on Twitter,
very vocal,
very,
and not in a bad way,
just very vocal,
voices out there in comfort,
because you're at home and you're like,
who,
okay,
go.
And you can be who you want to be
and just be a voice.
And sometimes that's great for people,
but sometimes it also allows people,
and you're just like,
well,
but,
done that. I think I just, I needed Star Wars to get me back into Star Wars because the
Mandalorian started to do it. But that was right before the pandemic. And then the world was all
online. And I think I forgot how magical this community is. And I like, I want to be more invested in
Star Wars again. And I haven't said that in a decade. I want to like, I care about this fandom.
And it was really beautiful to be around people that are so loving in that. So like I'm back. But it feels
weird to have one thing change me. So I feel like Obi-Wan is always going to be a special place in
my heart because I was feeling all those I was
huffling fumes in that theater
and I was like this feels good I'm
I'm loving the show and I love
we're in the potential of where it can go
and I think that there's a lot of them in the
Soca Trail looked fantastic and or to me
was the biggest surprise because like I said
I ended it hit the things that I said as long
it doesn't just do one thing
and it explores the empire also and it
absolutely looks like it's doing that so I'm pumped
for it but the way they described it the 1212
and also the community in Star
like all the behind the scenes and actors are some of the kindest most like war like i love celebration
it was special good um okay so speaking special we got some super chats that came in we're going to
answer those and we're going to call it a day today um if you didn't already know before we get
into these questions here ladies and gentlemen please uh this show the sith council show
all of the shows that we do apple podcast Spotify make sure you subscribe to it it helps us out
tremendously helps us get great uh sponsors like story blocks and other people to
if you help us out. So please go ahead and do that. And let's get to some of these questions.
All right. So the first question here comes in senior film. This movie rocked. Watch the boys,
Harloff. I know I do need to watch the boys. I don't watch the boys. I haven't seen season one yet.
I will. I'm going to check it out for sure. I mean, season two, season three is coming up. So I try to watch that soon.
I watched the first episode of Stranger Things last night. So, um, okay. Start that. Yeah. Same. Star Wars throughout
my stranger thing scheduled.
Mild Manor,
comic nerd with a really nice
super chat.
Thank you so much for them.
Very generous.
Great to see you guys live.
Roy,
you're the Peter Parker of our universe.
Winston, are you hyped for the new
DBS hero movie?
Christian was Penny in the first movie?
And did you buy anything at Star Wars
Celebration?
Oh,
Benjamin.
So she was actually mentioned in the first movie
when in the very beginning of Top Gun,
Admiral's daughter.
Yeah. So what happens is
when they find out they're going to the Top Gun
program,
the principal from back to the future
says, you know,
you did this, this, this, and what Admiral's
daughter? Goose goes, Penny Benjamin?
And that's how she's mentioned throughout it.
No, Winston, you have the answer for the second?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, real quick.
What, Dragon Ball, there's a new movie
coming out, Dragon Ball's Super, Superhero.
Cannot wait, it looks awesome.
They're taking, it's the first,
time that they are going to make the full movie in with kind of like 3D animation per se like
you're not getting full like kind of cg i like you would a toy story but it is going to be more
off the page off the screen so i'm super excited about it interesting okay so next question thank you
again for that wonderful um super chat and here's another one from mike choice to me this is tom
cruise best movie not sure if it's his best performance i haven't seen born on the fourth of july or july uh
excuse me, or Magnolia, it's definitely his best performance in the movies that I've seen.
I think his performance is very good in this movie for sure.
Now, if we're having that conversation, I don't think it's his best performance.
I think, and as you said, you didn't see Born of the Fourth of July.
I happen to think that is his best performance overall.
Even the firm is something that we didn't really talk about either.
But I think that's a few good men, we haven't mentioned.
A few good men is another great performance.
There's, and Jerry McGuire, great performance.
What's hard is like performances.
It depends on like it's like when you're hungry, you don't eat the same food.
So like performance, you're going to have different types of great performances.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's it's and collateral is a great performance.
Shoot,
Tropic Thunder, great performance.
So yeah,
I don't know about performance wise if I put that as his top performance,
but I am putting it as best movie as far,
at least in my list.
Biola J.
Another great super chat.
Thank you so much.
Hey guys.
Love you all.
Will they do a third since this one?
did well. This makes me nervous. I hope they don't actually. To be honest with the I think this was a
kind of a perfect bow, a perfect love letter like to what top gun was. But I'm afraid that the
almighty dollar rules everything and they will probably attempt it. Well, I made $156 million over the
course of three or four days. It's going to- International. It's at $248, which means a quarter billion already.
It might may. I'll tell you why something you said before, Koi, and something I keep seeing in the
comments people keep going back to see this movie already yeah people seen it two or three times like
and and I paid for it two or three times to go and see this movie um and it seems to every comment
that we get is you know I'm going to take my dad to see it again I'm going to my mom really wants
to see it I think that this movie is going to is going to hit in a different level this movie
might make a billion dollars it really might I think it's got the momentum yeah
It really does. Someone also said that, you know, what about a rooster spin-off?
I mean, I don't know.
I can see the new wave of pilots. I'd like to see all of them, though.
I'd want to see Glenn come back. I'd want to see Phoenix. I'd want to see payback.
I'd want to see that team go into like what their mission is.
Yeah. Yeah. It would be interesting, sure. But I guess the thing is, is like, while we have
gotten some really good stuff out of the Mission Impossible movies, there has also been a level of
fatigue with the number of them kind of coming out, I guess.
and what I guess what I would be so scared of is that you do the rooster spin-off and then all of a sudden now you're doing the hangman origin story and then like you're you know what I'm saying like I just top gun shared universe Winston are you just driving this PSU I know I get it I get it I make it definitely makes me nervous I also but it's one of those things too if if I don't what I do believe though and what mission impossible has proven to me is that when Cruz is very protective overhead
movies and over his franchises, right? And like you look at what he's done with the Tom,
with the mission impossible franchise and how he was very strategic and how,
and adamant that this did not come out on streaming and everything and was confident in it.
I don't think he put out a subpar third one. Um,
so even though it would make me nervous if Cruz was comfortable with it and thinks that
they had the right story, I mean, we'd still be pretty excited to see it. Yeah, I agree with
that because of his control and that's why i think you know we didn't have renter takeover mission
possible like they clearly set up and ghost protocol right he's got a lot more control because he is one
of the last movie stars and he's also got that great long relationship for paramount and also shout out to
paramount for two of the best sequels of all time this year sonic two and this has just been awesome
so like paramount's crushing yeah yeah i the only thing i would i know you got into a couple of superchats
the only thing i'd be concerned about is while all those other performances were exceptionally good
they were still supporting performances this lived and died by maverick i am scared to see what
And Jennifer Connolly.
Jennifer Connolly.
She is, but it's still, this is about, like if we, sure, if we lose him, are we still as invested in this, in this franchise?
I don't think that you will.
And I don't think you can.
I think Winston's right.
I don't think you can do a Top Gun movie right now without him.
So.
I hear you.
I just, I just realized we had mentioned.
No, I know.
Yeah.
Jonathan B.
Give me a Star Wars, Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie like this.
is. So, Coy, you know, yeah, there was no mention really a lot of a lot of movies at all at
celebration. But with the Patty Jenkins thing, do you think it's going to happen and should it be done
a little bit more in the vein like this? I think if we talked earlier about movies being
inspired by Top Gun, one of the greatest things that could happen for me as a fan of both Star Wars
and Top Gun is if someone at Lucas goes like, wait, that Paramount thing that came out and made a billion
It'd be amazing to see X-Wings and Thai fighters having a dog fight that's actually the movie.
It'd be amazing to see, I'm so sick of the Skywalker's.
I love, I love, I love that we've invested for 40 years, but it's been 40 years.
I'd love to see a Wedgantilly's-esque, not him, because that ties the Skywalker.
But like, I'd love to be invested in a pilot enough that I know his name and then we get dog fights with him.
I'd love to see that movie, and we haven't anything really close to that yet.
The closest thing's Rogue One, but that was still not quite a Top Gun movie.
I'd love it personally.
What do you think, Winston?
Yeah, I think that's a smart plan.
I think you have just shown us what,
because the other vibe I was getting is I'm sure you know,
I can't remember the name of the film off the top of my head right now,
but that a new hope, especially like the Death Star Trench is based off of the dog fighting,
the Japanese dog fighting movie.
Oh, God, my brain's not working.
But you know what I'm saying?
Like, I think that there's enough roots, obviously, in, with those spaceships with it.
I think that would be great.
I think we're going to get some of that stuff in,
and people aren't really talking about it,
but I think we're going to get some of that stuff in Andor.
I think you guys in was in Andor that,
you know, because there wasn't a lot,
I mean, that's not true.
At the very end of Andor,
there was a big space battle.
So I think that you're going to see more stuff like that in Andor.
So it would be interesting if you learned some more of the pilots there.
So, uh,
but yeah,
I would love to see something more in the vein of the top.
I'm curious.
When did,
when did,
um,
Empire drop again?
80.
I wonder if anything a top gun with goose dying was
just them looking at the
Hawth battle and amping that up
a little bit because you know Luke for half a second
goes, oh, come on, man!
Like when his homie gets shot and he's got to worry about
what's going on, so I'm being curious.
Could be. All right, let's see.
Connor story, thank you so much for that one,
Connor. How awesome would a rogue squadron
movie be with Macquarie? Gisinski
at the helm. Thanks for everything you do. I look forward to
big thing, Sith Council and Koi cast
every week. Cheers. Well, thank you, man. I appreciate
you very much.
Yeah, I think it's the same
same thing we were kind of talking about it was people are excited for this one and it's more so
a different venture off of the Skywalker saga right and to do do some more um adventures in
into something else so yeah i think it could work out pretty well and it's a galaxy far far away
not a family far far away we need to branch out right all right let's see the next one here
oh yeah same thing john or as rogue squadron movie people are getting excited for that for sure russell amador
Thank you, Russell.
Top Gunn was awesome.
Do you think there'll be a sequel?
We talked about that a little bit too.
I think we're all on the same page.
We don't necessarily, not clamoring for it,
but if Tom Cruise announced it that he was excited about it,
I think we'd all be curious to see how it came out.
Shem and John, well, thank you so much.
Only Winston understands this question.
It's a dimension.
Go Getta and Broly created during their fight.
What does this make?
It is Dragon Ball's stuff again.
Yeah, no, for show.
It's possible.
I don't think so, but it's possible.
I mean, there's a lot of dimension smashing that happens over the course of the series.
So we can talk about that somewhere else at some point.
Wild Man Beyond.
Nice.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with this movie except replacing Berlin with Lady Gaga.
Not having my breath away is blasphemy.
That's hilarious.
But I think that that's, I liked what they did, though, because they made it that that's,
that's the type of modern stuff that they did add.
that the danger's own touch and the reason why it works so well is because it was in the very
beginning and it's almost like how you start off top gun films where it's they're on there it doesn't
it doesn't impact the movie itself and even the what the song what's the song that i've been
listening to nonstop is the football one right the one republic song yeah man i thought that was
it's it's really really good um it's i ain't worried about it i think it's called yeah either way that
I think that those those little modifications actually worked for me a lot because it
modified it and yet gave it the same the same vibe.
Okay.
Is that the same one?
Okay.
And then back to Wild Man Beyond.
I would love to see a spinoff.
Maverick isn't the only lovable character.
I can see the Top Gun University span like Marvel.
I mean,
they just have to be careful.
And I'd want Tom Cruise to be involved because if they start to get, you know,
too many missions and too much, when it starts to get a little bit more unbelievable,
and we start to get more of those helicopter scenes.
That's the issue.
Well, you know what's funny, Christian,
because as far as why I think this is also a better movie
than the OG Top Gun, obviously the OG Top Gun was about the school.
You get back to the school here in this one.
But the mission that ends up happening at the end of Top Gun is just like,
okay, you graduated, we're going to throw you into something.
It's kind of a last minute thing versus, again,
the villain we were talking about is this is the time frame.
You've only got three weeks to get this training done,
how dangerous this mission is.
It's hanging over our head the whole time.
We're like, guys, we need you to get it together.
All of the first one is kind of theoretical and then something happens.
Whereas this is like we have a real thing kind of going here.
So if you can find a way to anchor it, sure.
But I agree.
You do not want to expand this too much, even though you like printing money because you will shoot this in the foot and ruin this.
And I do think there needs to be escalation.
Like you just described the first one as being like, you know, missions and things that are theoretical training.
This is a ticking time bomb.
This is everyone's already a graduate.
it. Things have evolved, but at the same time, it didn't feel like sequelitis where everything has to be
bigger and bigger and bigger. What they did was they kept it similarly scoped, but the ticking time
bomb was the pressure we felt. And then obviously, the technology improvements made the dog fights bigger,
but it didn't feel bigger for the sake of bigger. And I think that's super important for a third if they go there.
Agreed. All right, let's see. So this is then Jam and John. Thank you. What will be the tone for the next
Batman film? I hope the NAR detective tone doesn't disappear. I don't want Batman to get too
techie. Koi, I'm going to give this one to you.
and let Winston finish because I do think
that they're going to stick to what they've been doing
because it was successful. Why shift
away when Gotham became such
a tremendous character in this?
I do think they're going to stay with the noir. I do
think we clamored for a detective Batman for
years. I actually think he's going to get more detectivey.
And I'm curious if it's going to go
from the Batman to the world's greatest
detective to the Cape Crusader as he evolves.
I would change the name like that. I'd have
that arc. So I hope the next one's got
even more detective things. I do think that
eventually down the line we'll get a Batman
and beyond and that'll make the tech Batman people happy.
But in the meantime, I think keeping Pattinson's Batman as Gotham-based, as grounded,
go into the zero-year stuff with Gotham being flooded, keep everything,
almost a dystopian dealing with the realities of the world movie,
because that's what made the first one sing so much.
So I think they realize what they have, and I think the pacing and the tone and the feel
of this 70s noir is what makes this Batman unique.
So I would not tech that up personally, and I think they know that.
And I think that's how we're going to distinguish it from the Nolan universe and the other Batman's we've had before.
I would say that you keep it in that realm, but you push a different element of him.
I agree, you don't need to dive fully into the tech here.
But maybe you get more into what the fighter and willpower side of Batman is.
So like him trying to fight the quarter of Al's, for example, that is like damn near breaking his will multiple times because it brings a lot of fear from what happened with his parents and all that kind of sense.
So there's a lot of ways you can go with it.
but I agree. I think you amp up the detective a little bit,
but focus on a different element of him that is in the technology.
Yeah. All right. Last one here.
And this is from Lewis Berry.
This is the best sequel since 2049.
It's going to be hard to argue with that.
It's such a great, great movie,
and I can't wait to see it again,
and I can't wait for it to come out on streaming
and watching it back here and chilling out to see it.
It's a movie that I feel like I'll be watching over and over again.
The sound is so good, the fights,
everything about it and we're glad that we got a chance so a couple things before we um wrap up just a
reminder that we are getting into the full rewatch it was it actually worked out pretty well we were
trying to figure out all this stuff to rewatch and like oh wait a minute starboard celebration is hitting
anyway so we did the top gun last week and now we get into because we're getting into light year
um so we're going to do the the toy story as far as as far as drastic world all of our movies
already up, excuse me, our rewatch is already up for all those movies.
So that's, it goes to, I think, light year first, and then after that will be Thor, right?
Yep.
So we got four toy stories and then into Thor.
And then three Thor movies.
So those, that's, we're going to be pretty busy with rewatch.
So stick around with us.
Oh, we got another, we got another, we got another super chat that came in real quick.
And I'll bring it up here on the screen.
And Wildman Beyond again, how about a top gun iron evil?
It's funny that you say that.
Brett Sheridan brought that up, by the way.
And he was saying that Chappie Sinclair was brought up in the movie.
And I was like, no, he wasn't.
It would be amazing if he was.
I don't think they're going to do that.
Okay.
So, yeah, are we watched?
We have a lot coming out.
Make sure that you check that out.
Don't because we're going to be busy on this show.
That's every Friday.
And you can subscribe to us on the, whether it's Apple Podcast, Spotify, all that stuff.
And don't forget about our Patreon, that we have so many things going on.
but then I wish I knew shirts are up.
So much exciting stuff happening on the show at the moment.
And don't forget about story blocks.
Not only you're going to help yourself out in your videos,
you help out the show when you subscribe.
So I want to thank Winston and I want to thank Koi
and I want to thank you guys for joining us here.
We'll be back tomorrow for Sith Council with myself and Mike.
I'm going to have my spoiler review up of Obi-Wan earlier in the morning
so you can check that out.
But for Winston A. Marshall and Coy Gendro.
See you next.
time.
