Welcome to the Level Up Podcast.
I'm your host, Paul Alex.
I went from being a cop to an eight-figure entrepreneur
that helps average people like you and me
make money every single day.
I created this podcast to help you get motivated
and to crush your goals.
Let's win together.
Remember, I have your six.
Get ready to level up right now.
All right, so today we're gonna be diving
into a critical skill for anyone in sales,
marketing, or any leadership position, how to speak so that people want to listen.
Throughout my career from the high-pressure environment of law enforcement to the competitive
world of entrepreneurship, the ability to communicate effectively has been indispensable.
Whether you're closing a deal, launching a marketing campaign, or leading a team,
the way you delivered your message can make all the difference.
So let me paint the picture here, guys.
Imagine I was a rookie cop going into the detective role.
I had a lieutenant with 15 years on, and he wanted me to do a briefing on a major drug trafficking operation with over a hundred agents.
We're talking about everybody from the FBI, the DEA, HSI, Homeland Security,
like the local police, the state police, and like a bunch of SWAT teams, right? And I'm over here,
a mid-20-year-old rookie detective, and my tonality, my authority, it just wasn't there.
It wasn't there. And you can tell when I was speaking for the very first time as a detective,
as a case agent, that people didn't really respect it. So this is why I think it's important.
If you go into business, you go into any type of leadership position, that you learn how to be an effective communicator.
Being an effective communicator is going to help you in life, but it's going to help you also in
business. And it's also going to bring you to be the 1% in your niche or industry.
So let's start with the foundation of impactful communication, being authentic. In my days as a detective, being genuine in every interaction wasn't just beneficial.
It was necessary for building trust quickly and effectively.
This principle directly translates into sales and marketing.
People are drawn to you being authentic.
They want you to be real.
They want to engage with someone who is transparent and sincere, not someone who sounds
like they're a robot, or they're just there to deliver a rehearsed pitch. I tell every single
rookie that comes and works for me that goes into the sales department, the script is nice,
but the script is to help you with the foundation of what you need to learn, which is soft skills.
And in 2024, now with Zoom, everybody being in digital marketing or being in the online space
and actually talking to people in person, guess what? The soft skills are disappearing.
These soft skills transition to actually being able to articulate yourself,
to be able to communicate to people, to be real.
So if you currently are having problems closing more deals or problems with revenue,
problems with your teams, your employees, or even just having people showing you respect,
practicing how you speak and communicating can transform your business and your personal life.
Now, company being authentic with clarity is crucial in sales and in marketing.
What I've learned is the message should be clear and concise.
Avoid jargon and complex language that might confuse your audience.
To give you guys a great example of this,
I hire a lot of smarter people than me in my businesses. Why? Because I'm not going to know everything. I'm a marketing guy. I'm a visionary guy. I'm the startup guy. I start up the little
fires and then I delegate it to people that are experts in logistics, fulfillment, the tech,
the complex shit that I don't want to deal with.
And what happens a lot of times with these executives or these employees that end up
using the jargon that a lot of newbies do not understand or clients do not understand,
that just brings confusion. And when people are confused, guess what? They don't buy.
This is why I stick to what I know.
And I always say simplicity equals success.
So keep it simple.
You want to break it down like a fifth grader can understand your offer, your messaging, or what you are trying to say.
Don't try to use fancy words, guys.
It's just not going to be as clear
to your audience, no matter who you're speaking with. Now, here is an important factor when it
comes to speaking. Tonality. Tone is another vital component to this. The tone of your voice
can convey confidence, enthusiasm, and sincerity.
Or it could do the opposite.
When I transitioned to entrepreneurship, I learned that the enthusiasm I showed when discussing my products or vision was contagious.
Your tone can persuade and motivate.
So before you speak, think about the emotion you want to convey and let your tone
align with that message. This goes back to what I learned when I was case agent for over a hundred
cases as a detective and how you motivate your troops, the morale of your team. If you want to
lead your team to victory, you have to lead by example, you have to have that enthusiasm,
you have to be more excited than they are to be there. Why?
Because you're the leader, they are looking up to you. You want
to go ahead and show them the vision, show them the
opportunity, show them the blueprint. Show them the opportunity. Show them the blueprint.
All right.
Let's talk about engaging your audience now.
This is critical in all forms of communication,
but especially in sales as an authority figure.
Engagement isn't just about speaking to people. It's about speaking with them.
Ask questions, invite feedback, and show genuine
interest in their response. This not only makes the conversation more interactive,
but also more appealing to the listener. It shows you value their input, and you're not just there
to talk to them. And lastly, the power of storytelling cannot be overstated. Guys, this is my bread and
butter as a marketer. As a detective, storytelling was often how I made sense of disjointed facts
and presented them clearly in court. In sales and marketing, storytelling helps connect your product or service to the real world.
It's one thing to list features and quite another to tell a compelling story of how your product changed someone's life or business.
Stories are memorable.
They turn abstract concepts into something tangible and relatable.
At the end of the day, if you're not storytelling, if you're not
building your personal brand, you will not have a business, guys. So focus on what makes you special.
The number one objection or the number one question that I always get, well, Paul, there are dozens of
other competitors in your niche. And this was in several niches that I've been in guys, merchant services, ATMs, and digital marketing. And they ask what makes you special? And I look at them at the eye
and I say myself, my story and who I am. That's what makes me special. So to wrap up, remember
that your voice is a powerful tool, whether you're selling, marketing, or leading, how you speak influences how well
people listen. Be authentic, be clear, control your tonality, engage with your audience, and tell
stories that resonate with them. These elements can transform your communication from mundane to
compelling. Catch you guys on the next one. Remember, I always have your six. Make sure to share this episode with your family, friends, and anyone you care about.
