Hello, lovelies and welcome to the bonus edition of The Life of Briney.
Today, Gabby Roslyn is giving you a special Christmas gift.
Her tips on how to keep yourself cheery at one of the most triggering times of the year.
So grab yourself a mince pie, settle down on the sofa because by the end of this episode,
you're going to be feeling a whole lot more festive.
Wear what you want, but if you wear bright colours, not only does it make you feel good,
that spreads the joy very simply because it makes somebody else feel good as well.
My chat with Gabby coming up right after this.
Gabby Roslyn, I know this is going to be a good one.
We're going to do a special life of you.
And you are going to give us your three tips to having a joy as Christmas.
Well, obviously, buying, spread the joy.
Yes.
No, so three things to have a joy as Christmas.
Remember what you have, not what you haven't got.
Okay.
Okay, so that's one thing.
So what would we call that sort of gratitude?
Yeah.
But instead of thinking, oh, I want, I want, I want, I want.
Yeah.
Think, look what I have got.
Yeah.
I, we spoke about this in the main episode.
And I think that I remember, and I mentioned how cynical I was about gratitude originally.
And I'm not anymore now, like eight years in.
And I remember my sponsor in AA saying,
to me, you're going to do a gratitude list and every day and I'm like, I've got nothing to be
happy about. I'm an alcoholic. And she was like, you flush your toilet with drinking water.
And that is something you can put every day on your gratitude list. And I was like, what?
She's like, yeah, that's the truth. We flush our, in the UK, we flush our toilets with
drinking water, water that we could drink. That's just fantastic. And, you know, all,
around the world there are people
who don't have that. They don't actually
have drinking water at all. They don't have any water.
Yeah. Yeah. So, and I was like,
all right. No need to shame me.
I didn't ask to be born here.
You know, like, again, it took a while to get out
of that. But I do definitely
think now, like on my
gratitude list is things like
I got a free coffee the other day
in Gales. I mean, I know, nice.
You know, yeah, I was like, that's going on the
gratitude list, you know?
And the things on the list
to get smaller.
Like they get less big.
It's not like,
I got a book deal.
Yeah, no, no, no.
It's got to be,
it's the small things.
Yeah, definitely.
It's the small wins,
the small things, yeah.
Yeah, the tube arrived immediately.
Oh, do you know,
there is nothing better
than going down the stairs
at my local tube station,
walking down and just going straight into the tube.
Oh, thank you.
This is the power of gratitude that we are enraptures.
Or,
Or you dig into your bag.
This is a really, here we go.
You dig into your bag.
I don't know if you're like me.
I do love my lip glosses.
I love lip gloss.
Yeah.
Dig into your bag and the right colour comes out the first time.
It's just so simple.
Oh, yeah.
No, mine would be, I'm not like mad on a lip gloss.
I love lip gloss.
But I am a lip balm.
Are you love a balm?
And they are literally just all over the house.
Yeah.
If I can't find one.
In fact, I usually have one here, right here.
Have you got one in your pocket?
No, I haven't today.
I've got one in my bag.
No, so I'll be okay.
But when I can't find one and I go in and it comes up.
And then you get, yeah, it's the same sort of thing.
Yes.
Yes.
Or you put your book down.
You're reading a book because you and I love reading.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So my book, put it down, haven't folded the page or put a bookmark or anything.
But it just opens.
It opens on the right page.
Oh, yes.
That is.
That's the thing.
There we go.
Yeah.
These are reasons to be joyful.
Totally.
Okay, so that's your first.
So what would your other, because I, this book, Spread the Joy, has so many little tips.
And you call them what?
Tiny tasks.
Tiny tasks that you ask people to do.
Yeah, and I want people to write in the book.
That's a whole thing.
I didn't, it's very messy.
I read mine on Kindle.
Yeah, you see, well, the whole thing is that.
But you can highlight.
Yeah, but you can.
But also, also, you'll see that every page is different.
Colors.
Font and different.
I wanted it's not to be neat because it's, I'm not neat.
I'm really not neat.
So it's like when somebody, if I go to the hairdresser, I don't like it.
I don't like it.
I don't like going to the hairdresser.
No, me neither.
I like my, I'm messy.
Yeah, tiny tasks.
Yeah, tiny tasks.
So here we go.
Can I give you a tiny task to do?
Yeah.
Everybody can do it right now.
Okay.
So apart from starting every day with a smile, which is really important, but jumping.
Jumping is really important.
So after three, you jump.
Yeah.
Then the next jump you do, you put your arms in the air.
One, two, three, jump.
And then the next time, you do you do, you put your arms in the air.
You put the biggest smile on your face.
You go one, two, three, jump.
You've got arms in the air.
You're smiling and you jump.
And it energizes you.
And you just feel that little bit better.
I also, I would be surprised if you weren't already smiling by the second jump.
Yeah.
And also, when you do it out and about, which is what I do.
Do you?
Oh, no, always.
I always do it.
And I get people strangers to do it because I walk everywhere.
Did I mention that 20 million times?
But I get strangers to do it.
So people stop and it's really lovely.
They stop and talk to me every day.
I talked to loads of strangers.
And either they come up to me or I'll start talking to somebody.
And I saw a girl on a bed.
She was crying the other day.
And I was talking to her.
I just wanted to make sure she was all right.
She'd had a bit of a tough time.
And so I made her jump.
Right.
And then to contact me on Instagram and said she's jumping everywhere now.
She's still going through what she's going through.
But she's jumping through it.
She's jumping through it.
Yeah.
The third thing, can I ask you, is it, can I ask, can I ask?
because this is something that really resonated with me in Spread the Joy.
And I can't believe we haven't spoken about it.
And that is wearing colour.
Color.
Color.
You're wearing pink made me very happy.
You're wearing a sort of bright orange.
Coral.
Coral.
It's coral.
It matches your Maldivian coral, I would call it.
If I was to come up with like a name, a color name, you know, that's what I would say.
I love neon.
I love bright colors.
Yes.
And there's a lot of people, there are a lot of,
men and women, mainly women, but men do ask me as well,
who say that they're scared to wear colour.
So I talk about it a lot on my Instagram,
and I just say, don't be scared of it.
Wear what you want.
I can't bear that.
That's the other thing.
I can't bear with something.
Oh, I don't think you should wear that at your age.
Yeah, or it's not flattering.
Oh, what you want.
It doesn't matter.
And I changed the way I saw that,
and I talk about it in the book.
But years and years and years and years ago,
we were in Italy.
and I remember saying to my husband, wow, I can't believe that woman's walking around like that.
She was wearing very short shorts and a bikini top. It was very bright and it had sparkles on it and things.
And my husband said, it doesn't matter. I went, no, it doesn't matter.
And then I thought, no, it really doesn't matter. She was in her late 70s and she's wearing high heels, very short shorts and this bikini top.
And she looked fantastic. And she loved it. So I always remember that. That was about 20 years ago.
and I thought, I can't believe that I said that.
But I did.
We all do things like that.
And I admit it.
I claim it.
So wear what you want.
But if you wear bright colors, not only does it make you feel good,
that spreads the joy very simply because it makes somebody else feel good as well.
But also if you are too nervous to wear bright colors like we are right now,
you could try it in little ways.
Little bit.
Your nails.
Your neck, yeah.
Or maybe pants.
You could.
Pants.
No, but you need people to see it because you can't.
Unless you want to spread your pants.
No, but I also think that maybe if it's like if you're really,
but there might be people who are really nervous about it.
So like start small.
Well, I say a little, maybe a handkerchief or some gloves or, you know,
if you go out in the winter, get some neon wrist warmers,
which I got a, I bought a friend of mine who she only wears greys and navies.
So I bought her some proper neon wrist warmers.
She wears them all the time.
She loves them.
So it's just a little touch of colour.
Okay.
Thank you, Gail. Do you know what the touch of colour today is?
It's you, Gabby Rosley.
You're too lovely. I absolutely do all you.
You are such a special, special, wonderful soul.
Oh, right back.
No, I know. I'm just thinking about you.
And do you know what? No, but do you know what we're saying about everyone?
Everyone listening. Everyone, I want people to know this, actually.
They are the people. They're the special.
We're all absolute, we're all unique. We're all special souls.
and we're all supposed to be here.
And I hope that this week,
Gabby has brought you as much joy as she's born me.
A huge thank you to the glorious Gabby.
