The Life Of Bryony - The Life of You – Lorraine Kelly & Rosie Kelly Smith on Other Mums, Baby Naps and Bingeing ‘Below Deck’

Episode Date: March 13, 2026

After our main conversation about the messy, beautiful reality of motherhood, I had to ask Lorraine and Rosie all about the three things they each cannot live without. From the people who keep them af...loat to the tiny rituals that make the chaos feel manageable, Lorraine and Rosie share the everyday lifelines that help them survive and actually thrive as mums and as a grandmother–mother duo. We talk about leaning on other women, finding comfort in unlikely places, and why it is never “needy” to ask for help. These are the unfiltered, practical things that make modern motherhood just that bit more bearable.BOOKS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODERosie’s new book, Mother to Mother: Navigating Motherhood Through the Generations, is available to buy now.WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOUGot something to share? Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, lovely people and welcome to the bonus edition of The Life of Briney. Today, Lorraine Kelly and Rosie Kelly Smith are letting us in on the little things that keep them sane when the noise around motherhood feels completely overwhelming. I am a little bit obsessed with Below Deck, Real Housewives. I remember doing night feeds. I would put Below Deck on and watch it while she was asleep in the bed. It just so rubbish. It's good. my chat with Lorraine and Rosie coming up right after this.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Jean and Rosie, welcome to the life of you, where we talk about the three things that help you to survive and thrive. And this week, we're going to focus on the things that help you to thrive and survive as mothers. So what's number one, guys? Number one for me is other moms. And that's you, granny. Oh, that's nice. All my antenatal moms. Yeah. There's two of them that are just like, they're my friends for life, whether they like it or not. What are their names? Can you name?
Starting point is 00:01:08 Rianan and Orica. Rianan and Roreka. They've got a baby girl and baby boy and they are just constant WhatsApp. Like, is this normal? Constant. Yeah, they're the best. I'd say the same.
Starting point is 00:01:19 I'd say other mothers. You know, whether it's my mum, you. Yeah, I keep forgetting. You are a source of, you know, I'll always ask you what should I do with Billy. Because I've forgotten everything and everything's changed, you know.
Starting point is 00:01:32 It's changed a lot. So I always ask you, you know, but I always ask advice from Rosie, like if I'm looking after Billy, and if I maybe think, I'm not going to sneak at a chocolate button ever, obviously. Ever, ever. But I always always say to you, is it okay to give her this? Or she's, you know, she's had a wee nap. How long should I leave her?
Starting point is 00:01:54 Oh, Brian. Being put down for a nap with that baby is the joy of my life. I go for a nap with her. So that is actually what is most. important to you, Lorraine, a nap with baby Billy. It's honestly, that that keeps me saying, and it is the bestest thing ever, because I don't, I don't go for naps in the afternoon and I should. You do, because you have to get up very early.
Starting point is 00:02:17 It's not that early, but I should really do it. Oh, come on. What time do you get up? About half five, that's not that bad. Oh, I'm sorry. That is quite bad. It used to be three o'clock, which is evil. Evil, three o'clock is evil.
Starting point is 00:02:28 But yet, being put down for a nap with Billy is the bestest thing ever. You put yourself down from them. No one for Sting. I put her down and then I just, I just curl up beside her and it's just fabulous. How has becoming a mother, becoming a grandmother, changed your relationship? I think we're a lot closer. I think so. Do you not think now that you realize the way you love Billy is the way I love you?
Starting point is 00:02:56 Yeah. And it's that thing, I think. More of an understanding, I think. Definitely, definitely. And we talk a lot more. I mean, we always talk anyway, but we do talk a lot. which is good, usually a bit belly. And you live close together now.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Yeah, on the same road. Just like you're saying, I'll never move to where my mum lives. Or move to where I used to grow up. Yeah. And then we're at the house that I used to walk past going to school. It's really weird, really weird. It's worked out very well. It has worked out very well, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I don't turn up though. I don't turn up, Briney. I don't just pop in because I don't think you should do that. I think that's an old thing. My mum would have to pop. popped in to her friends and her relatives. But I do not pop in. I always make sure that I send a wee WhatsApp
Starting point is 00:03:41 or I wait till I'm asked. Because I don't want to intrude. Do you have keys? Yes. So I can go in whenever I like. When they're away, I just pop in a few times today. Just to see. Just like a little rifle around.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. But I do wait. I don't want to pay nuisance, you know. Oh, that is such a grandmom thing. I don't want, oh, I don't want to get in the way. You need to get in the way. We need help. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:08 We need intrusion. You know, we're very happy to do. Because my husband's always saying, leave them alone. Don't be annoying them. Stop annoying them, you know. I'm like, no. No, but I always check with you that it's okay.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Yeah. So what's number two? I think for me it's the steves. Oh, the steves are quite good. Because they are very good. Are you married or engaged? Yeah, I get married this year. How exciting.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I know. When are you and your Steve getting... After the one. World Cup. It had to be after the World Cup. Yeah. Is that for you? Well, it's not under in it now, so yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It is for me. It's really exciting. He's like, oh, the World Cup, you know, England will obviously be in the final.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I was like, shut up. And now I'm like, ha ha. Belly's got a Scotland strip. Imagine if England and Scotland were in the final. Oh, my gosh. Oh, geez. I don't think I think. Wedding. I think the world would end.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I know. Actually, that would be like the Ravens leaving the Tower. Yeah. All the side. England and Scotland in the World Cup final. It would be amazing. In America. Because that's where the,
Starting point is 00:05:10 are you going to the World Cup? No. We were thinking about it, but we're not sure, to be honest. I want to go to Scotland? Yeah. I want to go to a pub in Edinburgh.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Oh, and your own. That would be so much more fun than going to, I don't know, somewhere in Trumpsville. No, I don't want to go. I think our game, one of them is in Boston.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Yeah. I don't know where the other one is. But I thought if it would be Mexico or Canada, that would be Canada. doing great because Canada is virtually Scotland so that would have been fine That's been really good It's basically Scotland
Starting point is 00:05:42 So that would be really good But yeah Yeah that's going to be great I call Steve Dobby the elf in the book Because he just does everything So does my husband He's brilliant He's good isn't he your dad
Starting point is 00:05:53 Does all the cooking Go shopping and he comes back with the right things We moved house in May last year And I think I can count on my hand How much washing I've done Really He does everything He's always at the washing
Starting point is 00:06:04 He loves his washing machine. He loves his washing machine and then hanging up washing. Yeah, he loves it. What's the secret? Do you think it's just you naturally gravitated towards someone who was good with that kind of stuff? I had no idea. No, I had no idea he was so organized. You're really organized.
Starting point is 00:06:24 You're really organized as well. Your dad's really organized. We've both got organized men and men that do more than their fair share, which is good. I mean, they're still quite annoying. But they're very good Isn't it annoying when men who do their fair shit get treated like sort of gods for doing it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Yeah, they do. Yeah, because you look after the baby all the time. If he babysits, it's like, you know, if any man, if Steve babysits, oh, that's so far good. He's had the whole day. The whole day he has. What a great guy. And he is, and it's great.
Starting point is 00:06:56 But it's like, hello? Why is no one giving me my flowers when I do it? I know. It's funny. So what is the last thing that helps you thrive and survive as a mum? I am a little bit obsessed with Below Deck, Real Housewives. At the moment, I'm re-watching New York. I'm not that keen in the Real Housewives.
Starting point is 00:07:18 I want to slap them all. Well, the old ones are good because it's before, like, social media. Ah, they're too knowing now. They're too knowing, aren't they? Yeah, Below Deck. Blue Deck's great. And I'm used to like doing... Series 3. Oh, Series 3?
Starting point is 00:07:31 Of Below Deck. Okay. Which one is that one? the one with Rocky and the beef cheeks. What? Yeah. Rocky and the beef cheeks? It's quite rude, didn't it?
Starting point is 00:07:39 Sounds like a sort of really cool bad. Yeah. I've got a really naughty band. Who I watched it during the pandemic and it was all he did. He did and we watched Game of Thrones as well. Yeah. Two very different. Very different.
Starting point is 00:07:51 And the zombie thing that was that? Walking Dead. Walking Dead. I remember like doing night feeds and I would have Van der Pump rules on with Billy. And then when you. she didn't sleep, she only slept next to me. I'd have to go to bed at seven o'clock. I would put below deck on on my little iPad and watch it while she was asleep in the bed. Well, I should have been sleeping, but it just so soothes me.
Starting point is 00:08:15 But it's very, it's so rubbish, it's good. You know that way? What do you, as someone who works in television, are you quite picky about what you watch? No, I watch anything. To be honest with you, I watch everything as well. everything, I mean, from, you know, the news to rubbish, but good rubbish. I mean, I don't watch really rubbish rubbish rubbish. It's good rubbish like Below Deck, which is fabulous. So well done, isn't it? So, so well done.
Starting point is 00:08:42 I like a good drama or a good documentary as well. But yeah, watch, do you know what I'm watching just now? Funnily enough, I think it's caused my dad. Star Trek, the original Star Trek, original Star Trek. Wow. None of your other rubbish. Original Star Trek with Mr Spock. That's great.
Starting point is 00:08:56 And Billy's going to love that. She will. She likes... She's going to be, I cannot wait to get her a telescope, to get her into Star Trek, to get her into astronomy. Who knew that Lorraine was a tracking? Oh, I love it. Is that what they're... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, we'll accept anything, but Mr. Spock, first crush.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Mr. Spock, love him. She just did that. I'm doing the hand gesture, I'm doing the hand gesture. Live long and prosper. Okay, that was your first crush. Mm-hmm, okay. I think we've got a scoop. I know.
Starting point is 00:09:27 But yeah, rubbish tell you. Yeah. I wish Telly helps a lot. Thank you so much for Raina Rosie. Thank you. I feel like you are the telly mother. Oh, that's nice. Before we go, though, I just, there's one thing you forgot to mention that is an absolute
Starting point is 00:09:41 essential to thriving as a mom. And that is leopard print trousers. The early. How did that happen? All different. Your joggers, mine's more of a sort of trouser. And yours a gene. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:54 To me forward. Leopard print is a neutral. It is. It's a basic. 100%. 100%. Right, well, let's go and compare leopard print trousers.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Thank you, Lorraine and Rosie. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Lorraine and Rosie. It was so heavenly to chat to you. If any of that chimed with you or sparked ideas about what keeps you grounded,
Starting point is 00:10:22 whether you're a mum, a daughter, both or neither, message me on Instagram and tell me what you lean on when it all feels a bit too much. Or you could just leave us a review and give us a follow. It makes such a difference. Most importantly, look after yourself. Be as kind to you as you are to everyone else. And I'll see you on Monday.
