Starting point is 00:00:00 I am turning 40 this week, and these are the 40 biggest lessons that I've learned. I've interviewed over 500 doctors and scientists over the last 20 years, and I've also learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Welcome to the Liz Moody podcast, where we believe that there is always something that you can do to create a life that feels amazing. And we help you figure out how to find the lever to pull at any moment to actually do that. Starting with, number one, go to bed an hour before you want to go to sleep. I used to say I want to go to sleep at 11 and then I would start going to bed at 10.55 and inevitably, I would be brushing my teeth or washing my face and reading to fall asleep. And I wouldn't actually go to sleep until midnight or even later. So if your goal is to be asleep at 10 p.m., go to bed at 9 p.m.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Number two, it is cool to try and it is cool to like things. And it is embarrassing to judge other people for trying or for liking things. I used to try to appear effortless. Nothing is effortless. It is cool to put in the work. Number three, do not try to be interesting, try to be warm. This came out of my interview with Dr. Nick Epley, who studies how much people like us and what we find likable in other people. And his research found that we think people are judging us for how sparkly and how interesting we are. But actually, they are judging how warm we are. Instead of being nervous and social interactions about saying just the right thing, I've started focusing on being warm instead, so smiling and making eye contact and really listening, since that is what his
Starting point is 00:01:35 research found actually makes people like us. And it has taken so much pressure off. Number four, celebrate the winds along the way. I learned this one from my sister, who is a psychologist, and she says that one of the number one things that they do in therapy is point out the progress that their clients have made. It's one of the biggest functions of therapy, because if we don't celebrate the progress that we've made, we lose the motivation to keep going. So I have started to really make it a point to celebrate the little wins along the way. I'm writing a book right now, and instead of just celebrating when the book is being published, I'm celebrating that I wrote 10,000 words, or that I figured out this difficult neuroscience concept. Same in my relationship. I think that there can be
Starting point is 00:02:17 this tendency to only celebrate, like, oh, we're engaged, we're married, we're married, It's our 10-year anniversary. But what about we just got through a fight that normally would have taken us down for days? And instead, we communicated really well through it. That is a huge win. So I am trying to celebrate the wins along the way. Number five, raspberries are one of the best foods for fighting inflammation. This came from a Stanford researcher that I had on the podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:45 We did an entire episode about inflammation that I can link for you. And I just love this fact because I love raspberries. it made me really happy to know that they're one of the best foods for fighting inflammation. I eat them with little chocolate chips stuck up their buttles, and it's absolutely delightful, one of my favorite snacks. Number six, you are capable of loving again, even if you don't think that you are. Even if you think the big love of your life is behind you, as a lot of you know, I lost my cat, Bella, two december's ago, and she was the love of my life.
Starting point is 00:03:19 She was my soul cat. and I really felt at that time like the best years of my life were behind me. I wasn't going to get to experience those years again. I wasn't going to get to feel a love like that again. And then, this past December, we fostered two little gray kittens named Moonbeam and Stardust. And if I am being really honest, it was very hard at first. I kept comparing them to Bella with whom I had obviously had years to form a relationship. I had built so many memories with her. And I just did not have that yet with these kittens. But time passed. And my relationship with them is so different than my relationship was with Bella. But it is so, so satisfying. And it has been such a meant joy to get to
Starting point is 00:04:09 have these animals that I love so much in my life again. And so I think that the lesson is that the shape of the love and the shape of the joy will change, but these feelings are still available for us even after loss. And I personally find that very hopeful. Number seven, having your feelings bottled up is literally making you sick. I had a documentary filmmaker who investigated autoimmune conditions on the podcast, and she found that oldest daughters and women who keep their feelings bottled up are literally more likely to get autoimmune diseases. There are really interesting mechanisms of action in the episode if you want to watch or listen to that. But the biggest takeaway is do not keep your feelings bottled up inside.
Starting point is 00:04:56 It not only has psychological impacts, but it has physical impacts too. Number eight, people like you more than you think that they do. This is also from Nick Epley's episode. He did an entire study with people commuting to work, but just get into your mind. However much you think people like you, science shows that they like you more. Number nine, eat dinner for breakfast. It can be really hard to find breakfast foods that are interesting and delicious and have enough protein and fiber to actually keep you full and start your day with energy. Dinner foods, on the other hand, naturally have so much more variety
Starting point is 00:05:30 and they're much easier to fit veggies and protein into. So I have just started eating my dinner foods, which are prepped in the freezer, for breakfast, and I feel so much better all day long. It has made the biggest difference. I credit this as one of the top things that helped with my 30 pound weight loss over the past year. 10 out of 10 recommend. Number 10, sunscreen doesn't only protect against future signs of aging. It actually fights inflammation in your skin, so it reduces damage that has already happened in the past, which blew my mind. That is another huge point for wearing sunscreen every single day. Number 11, you can just not finish a book. And in fact, often you should. I feel like reading has become really competitive online these days. It's like,
Starting point is 00:06:15 I'm going to read this many books, this quickly. Reading is not a race. Reading is not a competitive sport. Why are we taking something fun and turning it into another thing to check off our to-do list? Read at a pace that feels good for you. And if you are not enjoying a book, quit that book and start a new book. Do not torture yourself and you will end up reading more. Number 12, creatine is not just for our bodies. It is also for our brains. This was the year that I finally added creatine into my daily routine. I do 10 grams a day. It is not only neuroprotective against things like dementia in the long term, but it also fights brain fog in the moment, like the day that you take it. When I take my creatine, which I do in the morning, I just stir it into water with electrolytes and then I drink it down.
Starting point is 00:07:02 I feel a noticeable difference in the way that my brain is working and the way that my brain is thinking. I know you guys are going to ask what brand I use. I use Puri. I believe code Liz Moody should get you a discount on that if you would like to try it. But creatine in general, highly recommend. It has changed the way that I'm able to think and process throughout the day. Number 13, if tracking is messing with your brain, do not track. I have more or less stopped tracking my sleep because I felt like I was getting up in my head about it and it was making me sleep worse. This should go without saying, but there is so much messaging to the contrary, so I'm just going to say it very explicitly. If something is counterproductive to your goals, like if tracking your sleep is making your sleep
Starting point is 00:07:48 worse, stop doing it. This is your permission slip. You can just stop. Number 14, add emojis to your text messages. It turns out that because our brains are wired to read human faces when we're talking and we lose that context in text, research shows that adding emojis or memes back in actually adds back in that context and makes people more likely to accurately interpret our text messages. Number 15. No matter how you identify, believing that you're more extroverted and acting more extroverted will benefit your life. The research found that if you tell yourself you're more extroverted and you act more extroverted, you will benefit, even if you feel like you're more of an introvert. It's just something that I try to keep in mind when I am giving myself excuses to not go out and
Starting point is 00:08:34 hang out with people. I identify as introverted. I'm like, no, girl, you're feeling a little extroverted. Like, go connect. Go have fun. Number 16, women need to have less flexible hobbies. This is from an episode that I did with a time management researcher, which I can link for you guys. It is so interesting. And she found that men tend to have time bound hobbies. Like they book a time at a golf course. They have to be there at that time. Whereas women's hobbies tend to be more things like reading or things that you can do at any time. When you can do something at any time, when things get busy, that is what gets eliminated. If, on the other hand, you have something like choir practice every Wednesday at 7 p.m., you're going to be way more likely to protect that time.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Number 17, wash your face and brush your teeth 30 minutes after you're done eating for the day. Dentists say to wait 30 minutes after you eat, so that's why the 30 minutes. But you want to do that so that you don't get too tired and then use that as an excuse to not go to bed when you want to go to bed later that night. Number 18, we need to celebrate our friend's life accomplishments that are not just getting engaged, getting married, and having babies. If you have a friend who has gotten a promotion, who has bought a house, who has run a marathon, who's been really brave and gone through a tough breakup, celebrate those things. Otherwise, we are just reinforcing that we are here on this planet to get married and have babies. And obviously, those things are important to celebrate too. But we way
Starting point is 00:10:02 over-index societally on celebrating just those things, which is powerful messaging that we are internalizing every single day. Number 19, most things that you think have fiber do not. Leafy greens don't have that much fiber. The three best sources of fiber that I've added into my life are beans, berries because actually these seeds have a ton of fiber, and then chia or basil seeds which I mix with electrolytes and make like a chia fresca. But if you are curious if something has fiber, Google it because I personally was completely wrong about what foods were high in fiber and I was definitely eating way less fiber than I thought. Number 20, live life with your friends instead of catching up. I much prefer working out with my friends, doing meal prep with my friends,
Starting point is 00:10:48 co-working with my friends versus just meeting up and staring at each other across a dinner table. I started doing this way more this year and it is so much better. First of all, we're all busy and living life together is way easier to fit in, which means that it actually happens. And you're learning so much more about who you really are as people instead of just getting together and recapping your life. Number 21, automate as much of your evening as possible because that's the time when your brain power is the most reduced. Any ability that you had to make good decisions or hard decisions earlier in the day is gone by the evening. That is going to be the hardest time to stay off your phone. It's going to be the hardest time to make yourself go do a workout if that's something that's harder for you to motivate yourself to do.
Starting point is 00:11:36 If you want to have habits that you either do or do not do in the evening, do not make them choices because you lose the ability to make those choices as the day goes on. Automate them. 22. Doing something novel can be a better cure for burnout than just doing nothing. I used to think that I just needed to lay around and like rot, absolutely rest when I was feeling tired and burnt out. And I've found that actually what my brain really needs is different stimulation, novel stimulation.
Starting point is 00:12:09 Now I do that when I'm burnt out. I read something that's really different and interesting. I go on a day trip. I meet up with somebody different and interesting and I have a type of conversation that I don't normally have. And that resets and refreshes my brain far more. I've been drinking element every single day for literally years. I usually use one packet a day, but I break it up and I kind of spike my water throughout the day. So it makes my water taste amazing and it helps me stay consistently hydrated, which for me means more energy, fewer headaches
Starting point is 00:12:40 and way clearer thinking. That's like probably the biggest difference I notice is my brain just works so much better. Research actually shows that you hydrate better when you sip throughout the day instead of chugging all at once. An element makes that so much easier because plain water is honestly so boring and I just will not drink enough of it otherwise. I even use a glass straw because research also shows that you will drink more water if you drink it through a straw.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Right now I'm obsessed with the lemonade salt flavor. It's my favorite hands down. Zach and I fight over who gets the last packets that we have left. Although I also love watermelon, but like lemonade, oh, it's so good. I also love muddling a few raspberries in a glass and then I'll add the lemonade element and then I'll sip it all afternoon or I'll use it as like a fun little moktail. Element is a zero sugar electrolyte drink mix with no fillers, no dodgy ingredients, and it delivers
Starting point is 00:13:26 a powerful dose of sodium, potassium, and magnesium to support real hydration. Electrolate imbalance can cause headaches, fatigue, cramps, and brain fog, things that so many of us deal with daily. You can get a free eight-count sample pack with any order at drink element.com slash Liz. It is totally risk-free. If you do not love it, they offer no questions-asked refunds. you truly have nothing to lose, go to drinklmn t.com slash Liz. Big news after me taking seeds DSO1 daily symbiotic for five years now,
Starting point is 00:13:59 and you guys sending me literally thousands of DMs about how much you love it, Zach, my dear husband, finally decided to try it, and it turns out he is obsessed. Surprise, surprise. He's like, I did not know that my gut could feel like this. Here's the thing about DSO1 that I do not think most people fully appreciate until they experience it. this is not your average probiotic. The vast majority of probiotics that you can buy do not even survive digestion. The S-O-1 is specifically engineered and actually tested to get through your stomach acid and actually reach your colon where it can do its job. It also has prebiotics,
Starting point is 00:14:32 which very few probiotics have and are critical. If you have probiotics but no prebiotics, the probiotics do not have the food that they need to thrive and they just die off. So they're basically wasting your money. And the 24 strains that it has are clinically shown to reduce. reduce bloating, improve regularity, and alleviate gas. And there are strains in there for skin health or heart health, for immune health. We're getting more nutrients out of our food. Our gut microbiomes impact everything. More than 2 million people have experienced the power of DSO1, and 92% of members have
Starting point is 00:15:02 recommended it to a friend or family member. This is definitely a situation where if you have been curious, just try it. See if it makes a difference for you. If you're ready to experience a probiotic that actually works, go to cede.com slash Liz Moody and use code Liz Moody to get 25% off your first month. That is Seed.com slash Liz Moody code Liz Moody. Every single movement that your body makes, every step, every workout, every muscle contraction,
Starting point is 00:15:29 depends on energy produced at the cellular level. And at the center of that is your mitochondria. Here is the thing that nobody tells you, certainly nobody told me, starting around age 30, our mitochondria naturally become less efficient, more get damaged, more become sluggish, and over time that impacts your energy.
Starting point is 00:15:46 your strength, your recovery, and your resilience. Most of us respond by pushing more. We're like noticing these things and we're adding in more protein. We're trying to fix it with more supplements. We're trying to do harder workouts. And those things do help. But timelines research suggests that we also need to be supporting the cellular machinery underneath.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And that is exactly what their supplement mitopure does. It contains urolithin A, which helps your body clear out damage mitochondria and support healthier ones so that your shes cells can produce energy more efficiently. Because this is happening to your cells, it's going to impact your entire body, your immune system, your muscles, it's going to impact your energy, your sleep, your skin, your cell health impacts all of this, and urolithin egg keeps your cells healthy. Support your cells and how you age with mitopure gummies from Timeline. Visit Timeline.com slash Liz and save up to 39% on your mitochondrure gummies. That is timeline.com slash Liz.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Number 23, jealousy is one of the most informative emotions that we have. I kept finding myself being so jealous when I had friends publishing novels or I read a novel that I really loved or I saw a novel be really successful in the world. And I investigated that feeling. And I was like, I miss that type of writing. I want to write a novel. That is what this jealousy was telling me. And so I buckled down and I now have a 26,000 word.
Starting point is 00:17:18 outline and I am so excited about what I'm creating. Listen to what your jealousy is telling you in terms of what you want. Number 24, music is a powerful way to impact our emotions. I think we all kind of know this. You put on a sad song to cry to or at political rallies, they're obviously using music to a very specific effect. But since I interviewed Dr. Ethan Cross about just how powerful research shows that music is as a tool, I have used it much more intentionally. Before I do an interview, I'm listening to a certain type of music. If I'm stressed or anxious, I'm listening to a certain type of music. I use it almost like a, like a drug or a supplement that I am taking to have the mood that I want to have moment to moment throughout the day.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Number 25 and also 26 together. This was the year that I consistently started working out for the very first time in my entire life, which is maybe embarrassing to admit at this phase. But here we are. there are two things that have made the biggest difference in me making this a consistent part of my life. One, convenience. I live two minutes away from my gym. I actually prioritize that when it came to finding a place or I also do my workouts at home. So there are no hurdles in the way of me doing a workout. Make the things that you want to do convenient and make the things that you do not want to do as hard as possible. And number two, I have strongly connected working out.
Starting point is 00:18:46 to the immediate results that I get in the moment. If you're waiting to have your body fully look a different way or you like have these huge muscles, you have abs, you're going to be waiting a really long time. And that makes it much, much harder to motivate yourself. What I have noticed is that on days that I work out, my anxiety is significantly lower and my sleep is significantly better. Having those immediate wins makes it much easier to motivate myself to do the work out. Number 27, read history or historical fiction to help better make sense of and feel hope
Starting point is 00:19:22 in the current moment. It can be really easy to get bogged down and feeling like this is the worst time in history. It's so scary. It's so terrible. Reading history books or historical fiction helps you make sense of this moment, helps you place it in the context of time. And it's just this really powerful reminder of all of the other things that humans have been through and come out on the other side. Number 28, subtraction is often better than addition when it comes to changing your life. Getting rid of habits, beliefs, and people that are no longer serving you can actually make a bigger difference than adding in new supplements, new routines, and all these different new things, which is often what we're more inclined to want to do. Get rid of staff. What do you need to get rid of
Starting point is 00:20:08 right now? Number 29. Fiber is one of the best ways to eliminate microplastics from your body. Obviously, when it comes to microplastics, we want to reduce our exposure as much as possible, so don't freeze food or microwave food in plastic. But we're all going to have plastic exposure. So eating more fiber helps your body eliminate that. Number 30, work with your brain instead of against it. I have a really hard time getting out of bed in the morning because I feel groggy and drowsy. And I also know that I feel like crap when I scroll on social media in the morning.
Starting point is 00:20:43 And I was often caught in this position where I was like, get up. But then I was tired and drowsy, and then I would scroll on social media. And I would be doing two things that I hated. I'd be scrolling on social media. And then I would also be yelling at myself for scrolling on social media in my head. So now, instead, I read long form articles in the morning. I'll read a New Yorker article. I'll read an Atlantic article. And that way I get to stay in bed and I get to enjoy this slow wake up time that I really, really crave and want. But I'm not. on social media and I am feeding my brain something that feels good for it. So instead of trying a totally different habit, if you are finding something difficult, work with the thing that your brain wants to do, but offer it a slightly, slightly better version of that thing. Number 31, boredom is actually really good for our brains. It feels uncomfortable, increasingly uncomfortable, as we live in this hyperstimulated world, but it gives our brain the space that it needs to refresh, recharge, and think the kind of interesting creative thoughts that I think we're all looking for. I try to give my brain one 15 minute or so period of time to be bored every single day.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I will go for a walk with no podcast, no outside simulation. Sometimes I'll just literally sit in a chair. I will drive with no podcasts or no music. I do find that if you're new to boredom or if you're bad at boredom, I'm very bad at boredom. having something to do like walking or driving is really helpful, but just cut all inputs, as many inputs as you can for a small chunk of your day every single day, and your brain will thank you. Number 32, failure is data.
Starting point is 00:22:23 We treat failure like it's a judgment about our worth or value as a person. It is just interesting data that we can use to adjust and move forward. When you treat it that way, you're going to be more apt to take risks and put yourself in situations where you might fail, which is a good thing because then you get more data and you can adjust and you get that much closer to the life of your dreams. Number 33, our dopamine receptors decline as we age by up to 13% every single decade. I learned this from Dr. Kelly McGonical, who is a Stanford scientist. Exercise actually brings those dopamine receptors back online. And bringing those back online is going to make it easier for us to experience positive emotions
Starting point is 00:23:05 and have pain relief and have stress relief and have social connection. 34, a lot of us exhaust ourselves by trying to solve problems that are inherently unsolvable. Dave Evans and Bill Burnett from Stanford call these gravity problems. They're things like aging or trying to make a lot of money in a career path that does not naturally pay a lot of money. And they say that the trick is to identify when something is a gravity problem except that circumstance and then you can actually problem solve given the reality. of the situation instead of fighting that reality and exhausting yourself and not getting anywhere.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Number 35. Similarly, two-thirds of problems in relationships are unsolvable. Two-thirds of the fights that you have with your partner are just going to be fights that you are going to have forever. This is why this is my theory. I think that the top thing to think about when you are choosing a partner is not what you love about that person, but the fights that you're likely going to have with them forever. Those fights are going to be different with every single pair, and you get to choose which one you are signing up for. Are those fights, the fights that you are willing to have for the rest of your life? Number 36, we learn far more by doing than thinking about things. This has come up over and over and over on the podcast. If you have a dream, if you have a goal, if you have something that you are wondering about, try and experiment with that thing. Take a tiny step in that direction. Get information.
Starting point is 00:24:35 and that will inform you so much more than playing the thing out, being like, what decision should I make? What should I do? How can I start playing that out over and over and over in your head? Number 37. When you use shame to motivate yourself, if it works, you are reinforcing a habit of self-loathing. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. You're no better off than you were before. But at its best, when shame works as a motivator, all you're doing is building a habit of hating yourself. Number 38, oxytocin actually has anti-inflammatory effects for our brain and our entire body. I have heard forever that hanging out with other people is good for you, strong relationships are the number one predictor of a healthy, happy life.
Starting point is 00:25:18 But I have never understood the mechanism behind it. When I had neuroscience doctor Ben Ryan on the podcast, he explained that oxytocin is actually incredibly anti-inflammatory. So essentially, every time that you are hanging out with a person or a pet, that you like, your body is releasing this strong anti-inflammatory chemical cascade, and inflammation is the root of so many of our mental and physical ailments, and oxytocin is thus protecting against all of these different problems. Number 39, our brains want to put everything into in-groups and out-groups. Once you start to notice this, you're going to see it everywhere. It is one of the
Starting point is 00:26:01 reasons why we are so politically polarized. We see people as either on our team or against our team. One of the solutions to this sort of polarization is to diversify and complexify the in groups and the outgroups that you're in. So instead of somebody just being a Democrat or a Republican, they're a Democrat and a teacher, they're somebody who likes to read romance novels, they're a nitter. Honestly, though, just the awareness of this in-group, out-group phenomenon is going to blow your mind when you start looking for both how common it is and how much people empower, whether they're trying to sell you things or persuade you to do things. All of that, they are all taking so much advantage of this phenomenon.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Once you realize it, you're going to be like, oh my gosh, this is everywhere. That awareness is so key. And number 40, we made it. Curiosity is the biggest superpower. I'm going to be honest. I had a little bit of a midlife crisis this year. which I can get into more in a future episode if you guys are interested. And one of the biggest antidotes for that for me is realizing that I do not know how my future is
Starting point is 00:27:09 going to play out. And that's exciting. It is getting curious about the possibilities that the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years of my life can hold. It's getting curious about my relationship, my friendships. I have found curiosity to be the most hopeful, comforting, and exciting. thing. I've taken a lot of respite in the fact that anything can happen in our lives. How exciting is that? That is my birthday wish for all of you to get excited about the infinite possibilities for your future. We don't know what's going to happen. How amazing is that. That is what I have for you today. Those are my 40 things that I learned in the last 40 years. I'd love to hear maybe one lesson that you've learned in the last few years or if any of these really resonated with you, if you disagree with any, let me know
Starting point is 00:27:59 in the comments. And I love you guys. I loved getting to spend these last years together. I'm so excited about our future of infinite possibilities. And I will see you on the next episode of the Liz Moody podcast. Oh, just one more thing. It's the legal language. This podcast is presented solely for educational and entertainment purposes. It is not intended as a substitute for the advice of a physician, a psychotherapist, or any other qualified professional. Genuinely, the most used item in my kitchen is my Wonder Oven Pro from our place. It has sold out eight times. It's that good and it's finally back in stock, so get it before it's gone.
Starting point is 00:28:39 The Wonder Evan Pro is an 8 in 1 airfire, toaster oven dehydrator and so much more that has made it so much easier to cook, to roast, to bake. It preheats 60% faster than a traditional oven and it cooks up to 40% faster, which is wild. It heats up in minutes, which makes it so convenient that I literally probably use it like I'm counting. So whether your routine looks different this season or you're just trying to stay consistent, AG1 is the one thing that has your back.
