Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Luke and Pete. Pete Donaldson with you on the show for Thursday, 15th of October. I'm joining Mr. Lukie Moore. Lookie Ma. Watch up. How are you? How are you?
Starting point is 00:00:16 I've heard you got a bit of boiler trouble. What's going on with your boilers? Oh, yeah. That's just the way my trousers are hanging, Peter. Yeah. Yeah. Classic. No, no, it was just, you know, the old typical.
Starting point is 00:00:25 We've moved into a new house, as people who are keen listeners will know. And this is about to be the first winter we've been in here. It's an old house. Yeah, there's no, all pipes, furred up pipes. The, I've not had any cause to use the heating, have I? No cause to use it. Yeah, I turned mine on the last couple of days for it, because it was getting too cold,
Starting point is 00:00:45 because I've got to leave the back door open for the doggies, very inefficient system. Why, he leaves a back door open all night? Just, no, not all night, that'll be crazy. What about dog nappers? What about foxes in the house? You don't want that? No, exactly. I've only got a little mouse running around the house sometimes.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Very nice. Look, do you want to hear about this boiler or not? Sorry. It's okay. saying, I'm just now termine on and mine's also low pressures I've got to sort that out. Yeah, so, go right. Do you reckon they just, do you reckon they sort of sink into low
Starting point is 00:01:11 pressure mode when they've gone so long without being used? I think they must be, isn't it just like airing the old central heating? Yeah, because that's do the old key on the pipe to get the pressure back up. So the people that sold us the house left us with what we think is a defunct
Starting point is 00:01:27 hive system. Right. So what you're going to do is, and it took a little bit of a mucking about to work this out but what you've got to do is you've got to essentially tell the boiler to override the hive system by pressing a quite a complicated selection of buttons is it like the canami chord up down a friend yeah it's a little bit like so you to get the boiler to override the hive system you've got to do left right left
Starting point is 00:01:54 right up down up down square circle x triangle yeah and then it does um chunley spinning bird kick and that's when you know the boilers working but anyway so ultimately when we first moved in just out of due diligence because we moved in until May and we just checked it and it seemed to work fine so yeah I was just wrestling with it this morning but it's quite emasculating not being able to fix something but I actually was able to fix something this morning
Starting point is 00:02:20 so that's good it's more just like I don't know why boilers you know it's got a little dial on the front that says I've got low pressure why can't you just fill up yourself you've got gaskets and valves that you open and close when needed, why don't you fill
Starting point is 00:02:36 yourself up? Yeah, also, and you cost about four grand? And you cost about four grand? Tell me something else that cost that much money for that's a little bit of equipment that you've got to they're on pressure. Maybe there's someone in the boiler industry who can tell me that you know, it's actually, there's a very good
Starting point is 00:02:52 reason why that can't happen and I'll go, no, I'm a disruptor, you're fired. I'm the dodged of the boiler industry. Mostly in his own house. Yeah, exactly. But I'll fix it, mate, so I'm feeling pretty smart about that. Good. You came halfway towards telling me a story about your own boiler,
Starting point is 00:03:10 which I'd like to hear now, please. I just need more pressure. My daughter in anger pushed a glass, how is it called? Glass shower screen. No, Daddy, and hit the shower screen, and that just fell off the wall. That, I kind of wish it. Clearly, very strong.
Starting point is 00:03:29 But actually, it's a two-part question, Peter. A, how strong is she? And B, how poorly fixed was it? Again, I didn't do it, but it was, yeah, just fell off the wall. I bet there was part of you that was like, great, that's going to have a job for me to do. How lovely stuff. Was it? There was a little bit where he sort of went, I've been looking at those kind of wood screws.
Starting point is 00:03:46 They basically just jammed wood screws in this fucking plastic monstrosity. And I'm like, that's going to fall off at some point. But I kind of wish it had just exploded in a shower of glass as long as she wasn't hurt. I kind of wanted it to be more spectacular. it's sort of go, that's what happens when you take your anger out on things instead of doing a teachable moment. So basically you wanted to be like when Shaq slam dunked in the NBA and smash the old glass green.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Exactly, yeah. But that would be dangerous though, wouldn't it? That would be dangerous. Well, yeah, exactly. But, yeah, I tend to find that people who can't control their emotions, there's never any comeuppance for them. You see videos all the time. People smash and their plates off.
Starting point is 00:04:27 The amount of videos I get served up online now of bullies, getting beaten up. Yeah. There's good ones. There's good ones out there. A lot of good stuff. I try to think the one that recently enchanted me.
Starting point is 00:04:40 They're all over the place. But it's always like secret old man boxer puts a kid on his ass. I love that sort of stuff. Or this kid, it's probably all bollocks, but like, this kid was getting bullied all year at school, but his bullies didn't know
Starting point is 00:04:58 Tuesday and Thursday night. he'd been training an MMA gym They just decimates all of them Because I think we probably relate to it Because that's not something that happened in our world, is it? No, exactly. There was never any point where I sort of basically went to the ground To basically flip.
Starting point is 00:05:17 There's just a lot of, with the UFC trade lot The things that seem to sort of work They're never the punches. Were you a ground and pound kid at school? They're the lift you up in the air And smash your head on the concrete kind of things. You know what I mean? They're like, if you can get it.
Starting point is 00:05:30 underneath them and flip them like a Mario Tortoise turtle, that seems to be the way to win a fight. It's never the punching, because no one can punch. No, you really do realize how good professionals are at punching when you see a fight in real life. Yeah. Because it's something about throwing a punch that completely knackers out a normal man. Like, you could only, a normal man could only throw like two or three. Yeah. before they go.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Yeah, before they're absolutely gross. And all of a sudden their t-shirts half over their head, their ass cracks out because their jeans are halfway down there are. They're getting knead in their head.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Yeah. They always end up underneath the front wheel of a car. There's also, with their heads perilously close to a wheel of a car. There's also an amazing moment when both of them
Starting point is 00:06:18 hit the deck and there's like a half a second where they both, neither of them know whether the fight's over or not. They have to wait for the other one to make them, oh, we're still going.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Oh, we're still going. Oh, I did see, I did see one. I did see like a road rage incident and I think in Nottingham sort of way where just two blocks just get out of the car and just have a scrap.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Again, none of them are at that kind of fighting but they just basically, they do everything but shake hands and then get back in their cars just had their little fun for the morning. That's done. Get out of the system.
Starting point is 00:06:44 That's done, yeah. You know, that makes me proud to be British. I got told off for doing a big swear in the car in front of the boy. Right. See? C or an F?
Starting point is 00:06:56 Yeah. It was, it was, Someone just massively cuts up in quite a dangerous way. Yeah. A cunting fuck. An Fing W. I momentarily forgot the boy was in the car. Well, so did they, clearly.
Starting point is 00:07:10 The Wi-Fi Vax was more annoyed with me than she was the person who'd almost killed. Show you the hierarchy of the marriage. Yeah. Yeah, my daughter went out of nowhere. Oh, Jesus. Did she? That's definitely come from you. 100%.
Starting point is 00:07:23 You do that all the time. That's a Donaldson. That's a Donaldson rather than a champion. unfortunately. Yeah, but did you get in trouble for that? Uh, no. Uh,
Starting point is 00:07:31 no, my partner laughed for too long. I said, you can't laugh. He can't laugh. He's not supposed to reference it. Yeah, we're good.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Yeah, well, all right, I've done the damage. Let's, let's, let's, let's,
Starting point is 00:07:41 let's not, you know, it's supposed to pretend like nothing's happened, though. I know, yeah, yeah,
Starting point is 00:07:48 yeah, yeah, Marcus's kid, I had an F word in him, I think, like, like, like a lot later in life,
Starting point is 00:07:55 because he clearly heard it the school yard and Marcus found it very hard to deal with like you know the school yard well I don't know I don't know he heard it I think and he used it and Marcus could not stop laughing but he just got he just got to go on it together haven't you it's going to happen to all of us I mean I'm very diligent generally about not using foul language around my son yeah which will probably surprise people who listen to my output but I'll tell you what my yeah yeah but I tell you what helps accent if you got a slightly strong accent.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Yeah. So has your daughter inherited your accent, or is she... No, every now and again, you'll hear like a word that she'll use and you're like, okay, right, that's a bit of me that, but it's usually... It's never, it's... Cork, Coca-Cola? Coca-Cola, she goes to Coca-Cola. But you're not letting your three-year-old drink Coca-Cola, are you?
Starting point is 00:08:49 No, but she's familiar with it. Because I'm drinking it. Daddy's Coca-Cola. Just walking around going, always Coca-Cola. Yeah, exactly. By the way, I can't, I'm in a bit of a rock and a heart place here
Starting point is 00:09:04 because if I wanted to complain about my lovely new house, which I love and I'm very happy to be here, but of course it's an old house, there's things that could be better. Yeah. I can't really complain because the person I bought the house from
Starting point is 00:09:16 is not only a friend of mine, but a very keen ramble listener. Oh, see. And possibly a Luca Pitcher listener for all I know. Well, hang on, you bought the house was somebody you know. Well, I only got to know him through the process because we only moved two streets away.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Right. And we had lots of mutual friends. Terrible. Terrible dynamic. What an awful dynamic. Well, it was tough, but it was lesser two evils because when it became difficult
Starting point is 00:09:36 and we thought the chain might collapse, we kind of had to get our heads together and come up with a solution together. And we've got a son the same age. Was it a lintel-based issue that was possibly going to collapse? May or may not have been a little- issue.
Starting point is 00:09:49 You know, you remember? I'm quite touched. You remember that because that was like six months ago. I just think, when things annoy me like that, they really stick in my... Because I don't have enough kind of things going wrong in my life. I have to adopt and absorb some of yours.
Starting point is 00:10:03 It was so... Fucking lintel. ...for such a short but intense period of time. It can't leave a stamp on your brain, right? Yeah, that was a whole other thing. But anyway, overall, very happy with the home we've got. Good. The home you have access to.
Starting point is 00:10:21 So, yeah. And then... And so the weekend just gone. I was in the Lake District for a few days. You were, you sent me a picture rather alluring Boudoir photo of you in a robe. That was the spa.
Starting point is 00:10:33 That was the spa. I was having a really good time because on the fantasy football group I'm on, the draft fantasy football group when you play against other players each week. I was playing against someone
Starting point is 00:10:47 who is getting really annoyed. And every time they've taken the group how annoyed they were about how that team were performing, I was just sending a photo being a robe in the spa. You can't, you shouldn't be bringing. Doing this, God, just going,
Starting point is 00:11:02 hmm, like that. But you shouldn't be bringing the fantasy football draft league into your into your spa experience. That's, you know, that's what, it's not what spars for, you've got to be relaxing. Can't be thinking about buying. But I wasn't actually in the spot of the time.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I'd just take in the video and I was just sending it. I see. But also, when you're on holiday, away from you get a little break away for a few days. Surely you want to be doing whatever you want to do, right? What, and you want to be signing? I wonder what football matches. Why, in my head, the only football I can think of is Pappy C-Sys.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I mean, that's not too surprising. No, I guess not. He's just signed for a non-league, not a non-league, but like, yeah, I think a non-league, sort of past masters kind of non-league side. Isn't he in that team that load of players are at? Run by Stephen Island. Yeah. I think his wife said that Stephen Island's working harder than he did when he was in the Premier League.
Starting point is 00:11:57 And as a Newcastle fan, I very much concur with that statement. He's definitely playing for some team based in England, isn't he? Yeah. Yeah, I think Stephen Island runs it. And he just gets his old mates and colleagues to... Because I saw the line-up of one of the games. And is it Withenshaw he plays for? Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And I saw the line up of one of the games, and it's absolutely ridiculous. Because he scored, like, they won. like something like 11 0 and he scored 7 it's like what's the point of that like he's playing like some veterans he basically playing against villain over 50s man yeah exactly
Starting point is 00:12:33 how's that going by the way uh got a draw he's got a decent draw to all at the weekend which was but then but the night before I'd gone out with my London team from 15 years ago perfidious Albion
Starting point is 00:12:46 oh yeah how they're getting on I've turned out for them once or twice they've um they went um They disbanded some time ago. But it was nice to see everybody. Everyone kind of looked the same. There's a few grey hairs here or there. But I think because none of us lost our hair,
Starting point is 00:13:03 we kind of looked, we didn't look kind of the same. But 15 years ago, you know, 15 years, I was treating my body quite badly. The best player was bald. What are you talking about? What do you mean the best player was bald? The little fella used to play at front. Little fella, I don't remember that guy at all.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Little bald fella. I don't remember any little bald fellas. He was great. Right. Well, it was only five. as we turned up so I mean it's a fight of the side side who was it you
Starting point is 00:13:25 Jeff didn't turn up no I thought Jeff ran the thing he did run the thing but he goes people sometimes aren't available Jeff Trav the archaeologist
Starting point is 00:13:34 he wasn't available who who played who turned up I mean Kristenan Ash the Bash Ash the Bash Ash the Bashe
Starting point is 00:13:43 Alex the Vap Enthusiasm Alex the Vap Enthusiasm The Old Monster A lot of them yeah So basically it was just you and how having a drink was it Uh no
Starting point is 00:13:51 well yes but yeah and al's basically said it's a for this family's having a reunion so we can get out of
Starting point is 00:13:56 the house that's what's me and him yeah we got there in the end got there in the end so basically
Starting point is 00:14:05 anyway when I was at the lake district I climbed cat bells have you ever done that
Starting point is 00:14:10 now you know me I don't know what a cat bell is sounds like the sort of thing you'd give a cat if I'm honest
Starting point is 00:14:17 it's a name of a it's a name of a mound is it the name of a mound a fell Okay, right.
Starting point is 00:14:25 What is a fell? Like what separates it from a ravine, a hill? What is a fell? So a fell, I think, is a Cumbrian word for hill or mountain, I guess. The thing is, they're not really mountains. They're great, and they look amazing, and the views are fantastic, but the kind of scale of them is relatively modest.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Right. This one's only like 450 metres, but you've got to do a good bit of scrambling, which is decent. What's scrambling? kind of like what you sort of put your arms out and yeah you have to be on your kind of hands and feet and pull yourself up stuff right well that's all right i i don't like it when you know when it's wet wet grass uh yeah you have to slide but you have to slide down your bum basically slide about a bit but it's busy i mean when it's a busy old um climbed that
Starting point is 00:15:14 it's lots of fun and the view up at the top was brilliant we did in a couple hours it was it was great though i've recommended it's a classic wayne wright fell mate Yeah. But I don't know what happens when, but I mean, presumably your bairn can't do it. So like that, you've got to kind of plan that. The boy was staying with his, um, his aunt. Oh, fantastic. Nothing better. Nothing better. Not taking a three-year-old to a five-star fucking spa hotel. A five-star fell. And they're climbing up a mountain. Some of them, some of the spa places have, some of the spa places have kids sort of sections where, well, so in that place we stay there. You can have kids and dogs in the hotel, but not in the spa.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Right. Why can't those places have like a little, you know, a little childcare area? I'm sure, presumably they have them for, you know, parents who just want to chill out a bit. Yeah, there's people like you that ruin places like that. Why? What, bringing kids? Yeah. Yeah, but we don't have. The only person that can look after daughter is, daughter, is Sarah's brother.
Starting point is 00:16:15 And they have miles away. Yeah, so obviously it's not always easy for everyone to get childcare. But I don't think, yeah. But I don't think that's an excuse to be taking. Because when we took our Simon holiday to Lanzarotti a while back, we went to like a family hotel. That's fine. But you shouldn't be taken, in my view,
Starting point is 00:16:34 you shouldn't be taking like a three-year-old to basically an adult-only spa. No. And then say, well, I'm going for childcare. So what do you want me to do? Well, not come. That's what I want you to do. Go somewhere else. This isn't for you, for crying out loud.
Starting point is 00:16:45 Yeah. But it's dog-friendly as well, though, so you could take the house. Yeah. I've, I just went to get my, get some butter and some blueberries. I've got a cup of blueberry. I'm drinking, I'm drinking blueberries out of a minions, Minions cup that I got from the cinema. That's classic. That's classic breakfast. And the, and I left Sammy outside the Cisternsbury's to get the blueberries and the butter,
Starting point is 00:17:12 the major food groups of modern life. And he was absolutely fine. He used to be the sort of dog to sort of be barking his head off and stuff, but he's absolutely fine now. so just got to watch out for dog nappers and then I'm you know I think I think we'll get I think we're creating the perfect dog um he did poo on the mat earlier today I've just remembered that actually yeah I just walk up to a bit walk up to poopy nappy and poopy dog and just just waking up to what poopy nappy is is is rare uh it's I tell you why because uh I was doing other stuff we did toilet and then doing other stuff she's just not getting the she's not not getting the
Starting point is 00:17:49 signals. The stomach just isn't, I don't know. I just, I just, I spoke about it. There was this big thing on the BBC, I think, where it said about, there's a government initiative about getting kids to do potties. The problem is everyone works all the time and so a lot of the childcare is done
Starting point is 00:18:07 by nurseries and child minors, and if they're not doing it, it's really hard to build any kind of... This is a classic Donaldson past the back this. It's not. How can it possibly be my fault? She does it all the poo's not on my watch so I can't I cannot I can only manage the weekend poopies that's all I'm saying it's not passing them up I'm just concerned
Starting point is 00:18:29 that just gonna get through it just go get through it you know I's the way I say it's much like it's like GCSEs please pull it by the bootstrapes you can't get around it you just got to do him I think you just got to do him mate and I think we're in the same position what what what can I do I keep on trying to have past not pasag but I go to the nursery and go remember lots of poop today and I'm not talking to my daughter. I'm talking to the nursery staff. You know,
Starting point is 00:18:55 there's plenty of toilet time, please. Because she always comes on with a big wet nap here. I'm like, she's not gone to the toilet enough. Oh, God. This should be a WhatsApp conversation. Sorry, everybody. I'd rather go through a, I'm not talking about this on WhatsApp with you. Fuck it now. You would rather go through this hell than actually have a firm and frank conversation with another human being. That's your problem. Yeah, well, now I've said, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, family. Such a cop out. Such a cop out.
Starting point is 00:19:22 I'm not bad on email. I'll email it. I know, but you see the, AI to write an email. You see the dickhead dad's at the fucking front of, at the door every morning
Starting point is 00:19:30 just sort of being really overbearing. You know, just taking up all the time of the nursery staff. What are they saying? They're just fucking, oh, he's had this and he's had that,
Starting point is 00:19:40 and he's been quite sleepy, so make sure he's, and so, just give over, mate. He's a nightmare. He's a lot. My son runs. straight in, doesn't look back and I'm off.
Starting point is 00:19:51 And I've got friends, I told this before. Enjoy your race Krispies, son. Enjoy them. I've got friends who after a pretty testing weekend, have dumped their kid in nursery and just turn their phone off till 5pm. Which to me is so irresponsible.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Do you not do that? Do you not get the fear? Do you not get the fear? Do you not get the app? Do you not get the app? There's not for everything nowadays. They're always really bad. They're like parking apps, nursery apps. They're just absolutely rubbish. Where's our three million pound deal with
Starting point is 00:20:26 who had the dad podcast that turned it to a football podcast pretty quickly because they got bored and talking about being dads. Who was that? Oh, the man of the speech impediment Josh Whitigam and who else was it? Was it Rob Beckett? I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Oh, okay. That's at a football show now. I think they've started doing a football side project and it's upset everyone who listened for the um for the for the the child care stuff and Josh is getting a lot of stick about strictly isn't he is he yeah is it just something new other people's um he's mouthed the words for other people's auto cues apparently right i mean that is i mean that that is that's your basics that's not befitting that's not befitting of a BBC one prime time show on the saturday night like that yeah but like i mean there's nothing i mean you had a doddery old block until he passed and he had a woman who
Starting point is 00:21:19 barely see out her own eyes. She's probably got lots of notes under them. Wincommon's royalty now though, isn't she? Wincommon's royalty now, yeah. But like she can she'll never age because none of her face is visible to anyone. She's got a hell of a tan. I think it goes under the radar how
Starting point is 00:21:36 and obviously it's not befitting to be talking about other people's appearance, particularly when you look like us, but it is strange how odd she looks. And no one notices it. But I think it's strange how If you listen If you watch her when she used to be on TVM back in the 80s
Starting point is 00:21:52 She had a very plummy Very very very posh voice Right And she's very much sort of damp that down over the years And she's had like Marina Hyde She had a very sort of posh But sort of a posh very very very posh I think she used to the royal stuff
Starting point is 00:22:09 Marina Hyde's the same I didn't know how posh Marina Hyde was Because she's so good at hiding it I'm not sure she's hiding it maybe she just doesn't speak in that kind of way but she is from She's the rest is the gold hangar woman, she's in the rest of entertainment
Starting point is 00:22:28 Right, I see But she is proper properly aristocratic I mean I'm not just saying oh she went to a private school She is the daughter of Sir Alistair Edgham James Dudley Williams second baronet Like she is from the landed gentry her grandfather
Starting point is 00:22:45 is, I think was one of the first people to pioneer like jet engines in aviation or something. She's from the upper crust and I would never know and her name's not Marina Hyde either so she's obviously moved away
Starting point is 00:23:01 from that kind of thing for, I mean, I guess for our own reasons but her name is like Marina Elizabeth Catherine Dudley-William Why do these people have so many names? Giz her name. Oie, Gizernem. What do you got to? Gizern-em.
Starting point is 00:23:14 In the Roman Empire, it was your, the amount of names you had was linked to your achievements and your social status, wasn't it? Right. So if you went to, if you were Pete Donson, right, and you've just called Pete S Donaldsonous, right? Yeah, right. And then obviously you led an army in North Africa and an amazing victory. Right. You would then come back and then the emperor would be, like, you're now Peters, Donaldsonous, North Africanus, Maximus or whatever. Nice.
Starting point is 00:23:42 I like that. The more you achieved. the world names you had. But could you achieve that as like a common, I don't know, running a brothel or cleaning the toilet or something? Weren't they fairly egalitarian for that kind of thing? Well, yeah. Oh yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:55 I know nothing for the Romans. I mean, obviously you've got a situation where in this country, in the First World War, obviously people were buying commissions and stuff. It was aristocratic officer class and stuff. But I do generally think in the services, like the armed forces, if you're good, you can pretty much,
Starting point is 00:24:13 It's quite meritocratic, isn't it? Yes, yeah. I think your face has to fit, though, I suppose, but yeah, I think so. What rank do you think you could advance to if you were in the army? I'd be, I would, I think I'd go one better than me dad. I don't know what I'd love. And then stop there. And then stop there.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Sorry, petty officer Donaldson, who's petty officer. I don't know that's particularly high up. But you look cool. There's the pictures. He did like Marky Smith. Which is pleasing. Yeah, mm, yeah. And I'm not really a fan of Marky Smith, but I, uh...
Starting point is 00:24:42 No, I'm not really. There are a lot of bands Have you seen I was just a wrestling nonsense And one of the wrestler Women was married to one of the blocks In The Misfits And you know I like Glenn Danzig
Starting point is 00:24:56 Just kind of He'll just get good looking body boys To be in his band Tragal, but he always gets The big hunky lads around Yeah always get the big hunky lads To come in a group Playing this band
Starting point is 00:25:06 Yeah exactly Exactly And it's just funny That there's just so many different The names of of the members of the misfits, misfits band. There's the body ones
Starting point is 00:25:19 and then there's the non-body ones, and the non-body ones have funnier names than the body ones. The ones that are currently in there now, Glenn Danzig, Jerry Ornley, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Dave Lombardo and A.C. Slade. The past members include Mr. Jim, Jimmy Battle, Diane DePatia,
Starting point is 00:25:36 Mani Martinese, not funny, French Comer, Bobby Steele, Joy Image, Arthur Googie, Robo, Brian Damage Keats, Dr. Chud. Dr. Chud. McCall Graves, Mike Hiddeus, Marky Ramon, from the Ramones. Of course. Descartana, Cadena, just chupacabra, Mark Rizzo and Jerry Over.
Starting point is 00:26:03 It's a good set of names. Jerry only has always been the Misfits, hasn't he? He's the bass player with the big hairstyle. Yes, yeah. I had no idea Dave Lombardo is in the Misfits now. He's a drummer from Slayer. He's fucking amazing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Yeah. People just sort of help out, I suppose, don't they? I do think it's a drumming and certainly like thrash metal or, you know, speed metal or anything that's got a bit of pace to it. That's a young man's game, in it? I think, I often think that. I often think that, so obviously Dave Lombardo is a legend in metal drumming and he played on Havana.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Oh, was he really Cuban? I didn't know that either. He played drums on Rain and Blood, which is the best Slayer album. and and um but yeah as you get i mean the things people give a lot of stick to larz o'urick about that stuff don't know they say like larz is it was never really that good of drummer and now he's um he's um you know he's just parodied all the time online you know you see decent drummers who are like content creators doing like this is what um you know fucking all the small things where bloop one eight two would sound like if larz o'rick was drumming it and but is that not just that his shitty drum sound
Starting point is 00:27:11 he did for St. Anger. Death Magnetic was the worst drum sound, I think. Right. It just sounded like he was hitting a potato. The snare drum. Yeah, there's a... I've got a friend who collects a playlist on Spotify of the worst snare drum sounds in music.
Starting point is 00:27:25 And I think there's quite a few metallic songs there. But yeah, so you're right. Death Magnetic had the weird loudness issue where it was mixed really weirdly. That's right. It was mixed for like the wrong thing. It had a really tinny snare drum sound, didn't it? Mixed for a car or something, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:39 And then Kirk Hammett in the some kind of monster documentary which is brilliant Kurt Hammett spends all his time sulking because they won't let him play solos because they all decide that solos aren't fashionable and he's like, this is bullshit man why are we got to do what's fashionable
Starting point is 00:27:53 this is bullshit like but Lars has always been been criticized and I someone who I know who's a big drummer in music and who is not quite a household name but people would know who he was said to me once that at a first time I may have told the story
Starting point is 00:28:10 before, but a long time ago. But he was at a festival and his band were headlining, I think one of the smaller stages and Metallica were headlining the main stage. And so, or they were on the former tackle,
Starting point is 00:28:22 something like that. Anyway, he said, the long story short is that he ended up watching Metallica from the side of the stage. And he said, he's never seen a drummer holding on by his fingernails for an entire set so much before in his life.
Starting point is 00:28:35 He was awful to watch because at any time it looked like it was going to fall over. because obviously the drumming is like the foundation of the whole thing and he's like it's it was just bananas how much Ulrich was like hanging on for dear life but I think what probably happens though Pete and obviously you're as musically educated as I am I think what probably happens is that the band just learn to play with him
Starting point is 00:29:00 so they learn that's how we play it's yeah you know it's like playing with a you know particularly you know a passable backline kind of defence isn't it? You know exactly what he's going to do at any moment and therefore it works. I feel a bit seen. Apart for the fact that it didn't work. But yeah, so Larser's pretty well parody.
Starting point is 00:29:21 But Lombardo's a legend. Lombardo's an absolute legend in the space. Yeah. I've got an album recommendation for you that I think I want to listen to it. I took the dog, I took Sammy for a walk and I just stuck on an album that I'd not listened to in about
Starting point is 00:29:41 God, 20 years probably. I know what you were thinking. What if this dog walk was pop punk? Well, it is pop punk. It is a little bit pop punk. What is it? But it's a... In the same way that someone said
Starting point is 00:29:55 all Kiss albums are concept albums and the concept is what if Kiss was shit. You're familiar with Coyd and Cambria? the album in Keeping Secrets of a silent earth three it's a fucking album it's a really good it's their second studio album yeah and i was just known i was like you know what this is silly and stupid and it's every and it's i think it's about a war or something a sparse war um one of the songs did sound a little bit like uh that carlos santana
Starting point is 00:30:31 smooth song but other than that um every second song is a banger And it's a bit of a journey. It's the one with flagged Red Summer on it, which was a big MTV 2 song back in the day. And a favour house Atlantic as well. But the rest of them are really good. And it starts with the kind of... Oh, I'll give it a back.
Starting point is 00:30:49 It's good. It's good. And I was like, you know what? I reckon look about it like this in a weird kind of way. Is it a bit prog-rock? Is it a bit proggy? It's a... It's a... It's a band who are approaching Emo be a bit proggy.
Starting point is 00:31:06 Yeah, it is a bit proggy. proggy. So I've seen Code in Canvera live supporting who was it? It would have been about that time around that second album. You say it's their second album so it would have been about
Starting point is 00:31:20 being the early 2000s 2003 maybe so I would have seen them around that time supporting someone else I think I'll give it a go man give it a go! I went through a phase around that time perhaps a little bit before
Starting point is 00:31:34 no probably around that time where every single metal band I went to go and see was being supported by Avenge Sevenfold. So I saw them about four times without ever wanting to see it. People are very keen on Avenge Channel 7thold but I'm
Starting point is 00:31:48 yet to find someone who's you know, that's their favorite band. It's always the way of those, I suppose. Yeah. It's like being a fan of like 100 reasons or something. I like 100 reasons though. I like 100 reasons but you go back and you go
Starting point is 00:32:00 this is, you know, of its time, isn't it? Should we get out of here, Luke? Well, no, we're not going to get out of here because I just want to pick up on that and say it might well be of its time but I think that they were pretty influential right they were quite ahead of their time I would say
Starting point is 00:32:17 in Britain maybe they allowed Britain to emo rock a bit I suppose because ideas above their station is a fucking great record it's got the open song on that I'll find you as one of the best fucking emo
Starting point is 00:32:32 rock tunes it's very good and and his voice is amazing Yeah. He's got to be the best singing Colin in rock history. I can't think of another one. There's not been a Colin. Singing Collins. Singing Collins.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Phil Collins doesn't count. Phil Collins. He sings. Why doesn't that count? He's not Colin. He's not Colin. He's not Colin. Edwin?
Starting point is 00:32:54 Who's that? Edwin Stephen Collins. Edward Collins. Never made a girl like you before. Neither of them. Even if you admit, even though I'd say that Edwin Collins's work with Orange Juice is good and Phil Collins is obviously. see a legend in his own way.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Neither have got better singing voices than Colin from 100 reasons who second them. I can't remember. Okay. All right, fine. Now we can live. She will live long in the memory. But I can't listen to Cohen in Canberra ahead of the next episode because we're going to record it straight away. But I will try and listen to it ahead of some time soon.
Starting point is 00:33:24 I've saved it to my spot-off I'd play list already. Smashing. All right then, darling. We'll be back for more looking at pitch of fun. Very, very soon indeed. Take care of yourselves. We'll see you very soon. show is a stack production and part of the ACAST creator network.
