Starting point is 00:01:26 What I eat in a day, IBS edition. This is what I eat in a day. As a skinny girl who doesn't really care what she eats, doesn't care about calories, just eats. Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Apologies, but there is construction around. I really hope you can't hear it, but if you can... As someone who went through Freshman 50, then back and forth on healthy and unhealthy weight losses,
Starting point is 00:01:55 today's video really hits home for me. All the OG Unlimited Squad already know this, but there was a time I didn't have a healthy mindset toward food and exercise. And it wasn't until I reshifted my entire mindset. Was I able to lose the unhealthy fat I gained and to embark on this whole new fitness journey to gain lean math? Now how I changed my metabolism become fitter and stronger could be a whole different series But as you guys know, I'm a foodie at heart
Starting point is 00:02:28 My TikTok algorithm is always filled with food related content Cooking baking macbahn, you name it and of course what I eat videos These ultra-aesthetic, objectively healthy, nutritious meals featured in girls' videos honestly inspire me to romanticize eating well and taking care of myself. Except there is one caveat. I know I eat a lot because throughout the years I've built up my metabolism, but what many girls deem as a whole day worth of food is like a light meal for me. So today, let's talk about.
Starting point is 00:03:06 The healthification of food on TikTok, the underlying potential harmful messages about body image, and how the whole wave of resistance to counter the ED triggering trend is also problematic. Let's dive in. All right, y'all, here's what I eat in a day being pretty healthy, but not too crazy healthy and not restricting myself too much. Healthification of food on TikTok. Green smoothies, yogurt bowls, berries and salads, these organic and vegan foods are the superstars of the what I eat in the day. trend and what can I say they do look darn beautiful and are therefore addicting to watch however as a trend repeats itself one cannot help but to
Starting point is 00:03:46 notice an obsession the obsession to eat super clean and healthy an obsession to make everything as aesthetic as possible an obsession to fit into a lifestyle called hashtag goals which can make the viewers feel guilty if A, they're not eating as clean and organic. And B, if you're like me and eat a much larger portion size, you will start feeling like you are the odd one out. The healthification of what these girls eat on a quote-unquote daily basis is inspiring and encourages the audiences to make conscious health choices.
Starting point is 00:04:28 But could nevertheless portray an unrealistic ideal that healthy should look a certain way, that eating should look a certain way with certain food. And by that, it goes down to the portion size, to the brand names, to the whole aesthetic associated with the lifestyle. Before we talk about the body image implications, let's first take a quick second to remind ourselves that social media is never the full true. That 60 second recap of someone's day will not be entirely representative of their full 24 hours. and that although the goal for most of us is to strive for better health,
Starting point is 00:05:07 eating gluten, dairy, and God forbid a piece of chocolate cake does not mean you fail to be healthy. I used to be on the bandwagon of super restrictive eating, zero out of sugar for a whole year. But personally, right now, I do believe in balance and still enjoying life. The larger picture is what counts, not the few instances you allowed yourself to enjoy an occasional treat.
Starting point is 00:05:31 And eating food not from Whole Foods or Irwan doesn't mean you shouldn't feel proud of yourself when you do make a healthy choice. Part of the trend is attractive is the aesthetic. But let's not forget that the main goal at the end is to not just fit into an aesthetic. But eating well to make our bodies feel great. And speaking of body, let's talk about the underlying messages related to body image that the what I eat in the day TikToks often send. This episode is brought to you by Accenture. Kate Moss has been idolized by young girls, not just for her trend-setting fashions, but also that waif-like figure.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Unlike how Kate Moss stated it bluntly as, quote, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. A part of social media is still priding itself with prioritizing fitting into a certain size over all elements. and the messages might be implicitly hidden in the what I eat trends in the most subtle way or simply be interpreted by the audiences as such. To start off, I don't think any of these girls making these like What I Eat TikToks is trying to hurt anyone's self-image at all. It's fun and creative to romanticize your life and vlog it as a journal.
Starting point is 00:07:56 I personally do it too. The issue though, honestly just stems from the lack of diversity in the lens The majority of women who post what I eat in a day videos are white, young, thin, and able-bodied, meaning the majority of content emerging from this trend is not reflective of the diverse body shapes and sizes, nor giving a broad racial representation. As mentioned many times in my commentary videos before, TikTok's user demographic is still really young, and adolescents are really impressionable. This is the age when you start to create and develop your sense of self.
Starting point is 00:08:31 When young women see that someone is thin and successful and they eat a certain way, they will associate the positive traits they liken someone with that certain lifestyle. And they may themselves begin to cut calories and restrict their eating to try to look and act the same way the people they see online. But as different as we all are, there's no one-size-fits-all diet, period. Everyone's bodies work extremely differently, What might actually be the right amount or right food choices for one person could look like starvation or malnourishment to another.
Starting point is 00:09:09 I'm not going to say that I've got a fast metabolism because last time I said it and it pissed everyone, well half the people off. Some people think I've got a fast metabolism. Some people think I haven't and I'm normal. I can't win to be honest, so I'm just going to show you what I eat and just get over it, all right? On top of that, there's the fact that most people want to present the best versions of themselves, meaning they won't show the fried chicken after the salad or the brownies after the smoothie. But obviously, there's also another side to the story that created a whole new wave to what I eat in a day. Not necessarily against eating healthy, but acting kind of intentionally in polar opposite ways as the typical skinny girl what I eat in a day. Started the day with warm lemon waters, granola with oat milk and cashew butter for breakfast,
Starting point is 00:09:52 a larabar for a snack, I try to drink two of these a day, a Mediterranean bowl for lunch, almonds for another snack, curry with coconut rice and a sweet potato for dinner, and my sister made brownies for dessert. The new era of what I eat in a day. Another wave of TikTok trend to counter the super clean and aesthetic diet trend is people eating a huge amount of high-calorie foods while sinking to the sound talking about a healthy diet. These videos usually have a satirical take on what is healthy
Starting point is 00:10:22 and often praise that eating burgers, fries, shakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is superior. The two polar attitudes honestly just reminds me of the TikTok trend. I'm not like the other girls. Each group is trying so hard to dissociate themselves from another with a sense of pride of being different. Started the day with warm lemon water, granola with oat milk and cashew butter for breakfast, a lar bar for a snack. I try to drink two of these a day, a Mediterranean bowl for lunch, almonds for another snack, curry with coconut rice and a sweet potato for dinner. and my sister made brownies for dessert. Skinny girls hoping not to be called quote unquote ED triggering in the comments
Starting point is 00:11:03 start intentionally adding high-calorie foods into their diet, therefore making it more, quote-unquote, balanced and acceptable. I think the whole trend began as just people loving and living their lives, showing other people with the eat, while some leveraged that to sell an aesthetic, so people became very scrutinizing of the whole trend and started questioning if these people, videos were intentionally ED triggering to the point that a lot of people fear getting
Starting point is 00:11:31 attacked in the comments and started adding highly processed foods to quote-unquote balance out their ultra-clean diet. Don't get me wrong. I don't think a diet that includes highly processed foods or high-calorie foods is ultimately unhealthy. As mentioned before, it's the big picture that counts. And life is too short to restrict yourself from your favorite foods. But I think eating junk food intentionally to balance out your
Starting point is 00:11:57 diet is going too extreme in the route of countering the overhealthification of foods. At the end of the day, as audiences, we just need to remind ourselves that those 30 seconds is not the whole picture. And as eaters ourselves, we shouldn't feel pressure to eat super clean or highly processed. Simply put, our bodies all function so differently and our diets should not be based on someone's supposed meal plan, post it on TikTok. So that is all I wanted to chat there today.
