Starting point is 00:00:33 But I'm rich and I'm pretty, so it doesn't really matter. No! And you got... ...pushish-n't everything, it's the only thing. So those of you who follow me on Instagram, which by the way you should, for all the quality chaotic content... Quality chaotic content... Know that I recently went to Hawaii,

Starting point is 00:01:07 and at the end of the trip, I missed my flight because I was chilly and... at another gate and nobody paged me for boarding. The reason I wanted to bring out this story is that thinking back, I realized how lucky I was at this unlucky situation. Not only did I get put on the next available flight, free of charge, which happened to be a full flight. They also switched me to a better seat, and the staff were so kind. They kept telling me their own stories of how they missed their flights,

Starting point is 00:01:40 despite working for the airlines themselves. And I've been thinking, would these people have been so nice? Had I not cried? Had I not been a girl? Had I not looked the way I am? I'm not sure. But had I been a middle-aged man crying because I miss my flight. I might have not gotten the preferred seat to the next available flight,

Starting point is 00:02:07 but the premier escort of the friendly airport security. And it got me thinking. me thinking into further instances of kindness like getting two mochi donuts when only buying one because I complimented the guy how cool his shirt was free drinks at the bar on the house unrelated people giving me gifts and treats since I was a child there is no humble way to say this but being a girl or a young girl or a young girl with certain physical attributes has its privileges. Pretty privilege is crazy. Today I decided to put on lashes and tell me why I made so much money. I was looking at people's tips and I was like why am I getting so much? Like why are

Starting point is 00:02:56 they tipping me so much? And I realized it's because I'm wearing lashes today. Girls will always be like oh my gosh I love you so much. You're so gorgeous. We're going to hang out. We're going to do this. We're going to do that. Pretty privilege is also getting millions of views on every single TikTok I have for literally doing nothing. I literally have 65 million followers for literally just being pretty. I've had people pay me just to stare at my face. I've had people pay for my ubers just so they could look at my body. I didn't have to go to even community college because I'm so beautiful that I actually make millions of dollars just by existing. I'm treated like an object to act upon. So in this video, let's talk about what is pretty privilege? How is it dangerous for the privileged self?

Starting point is 00:03:33 And how is it dangerous for everyone else? Exciting stuff? Let's dig in. without actually telling me that you have pretty privilege. Well, either you're gay or you're seeing me here on your FEP because I have pretty prelates, pretty pretty pretty little wreaths. What is pretty privilege? Instead of defining it, let's first hear some stories from Reddit of how people have experienced or witness pretty privileged. Okay, here we go.

Starting point is 00:04:12 My attractive co-worker and I were stopped on the same day by the same trooper by speeding. I'm a fugly dude. She's a 10 out of 10 knockout. I was doing 81 miles per hours in a 70 zone and got a ticket. She was doing 86 miles per hours in a 70s zone and the trooper gave her a warning.

Starting point is 00:04:31 I actually had a friend who had a similar story. I was in line for ice cream with a pretty senior in front of me and the ice cream vendor was like, You don't need to pay, it's free for you. Then it was my turn and they were like, oh, she's the only one who'll get a free ice cream. So pretty privileged works on the principle that people who are deemed more attractive

Starting point is 00:04:51 based on societal beauty standards have an upper hand in the world and are afforded many opportunities. So the first question is how do you become a model? And I always just say, oh, I was scouted, but that means nothing. The real way that I became a model is I won a genetic lottery, and I am the recipient of a legacy. I'm on this stage because I am a pretty white woman.

Starting point is 00:05:13 Studies have found that attractive people when compared to less attractive people are more successful reproductively, report being healthier, fare better when it comes to dating and marriage, and more successful in the labor market, and are viewed as having more successful political careers. This is a legacy that was built for me and it's a legacy that I've been cashing out on. If you've had pretty privileged like your whole life, can you stitch this in... Yes, girl, let's talk about it.

Starting point is 00:05:38 because it needs to be talked about. Okay, so let me get my credentials out of the way really quickly. A few years ago, I looked like... She knows. How? Did you blam? No. The Devil wears Prada, too. He's the movie event 20 years in the making.

Starting point is 00:05:50 Honestly, can't with the secrets anymore, so I think we just... We should tell her. Will you two please spit it out already? This Friday, be the first to experience it only in theaters. In light of the recent scandal, I'm here to restore your credibility. Oh, because we're a team now? That's a nice story. Starting point is 00:06:13 Now I look like this and that has given me the power to experience both the best and the worst the pretty privilege has to offer. It could be, it's little subtle things that you wouldn't notice before. So for example, not being charged for that extra drink or dessert at a restaurant, having someone offered to put the air in your tires rather than see you struggle doing it. And you can tell me like, oh my God, Kelsey, like maybe people are just good or maybe they're just doing a good deed. And I'm okay, I'm with you. They're doing a good deed. Why didn't they do that good deed when I was 257 pounds, huh? Why all of a sudden, all these good deeds start happening to me the moment I look like this?

Starting point is 00:06:46 Because I went from like one good deed happening to me to a year to 10 of them happening to me in a week. That's not a coincidence. Unfortunately, there are many inequalities and equity issues associated with pretty privilege. And that's a perfect segue into why pretty privilege is dangerous. You're an awful person. Maybe, but I'm rich and I'm pretty, so it doesn't really matter. The danger for others. It is true that as humans, we are visual creatures.

Starting point is 00:07:14 We form a lot of judgments based on what we see and historically has worked. Otherwise, we would have been an extinct species. But an overemphasis on visual attributes might make us overlook other fundamental attributes like, Is this person kind or an asshole? Does this person have talents other than being pretty? Historically in the cinematic world, especially in Disney movies, Pretiness has also been strongly associated with positive attributes of main characters, like kind, nice, smart, ambitious, talented, the list goes on.

Starting point is 00:07:48 While the antagonists are often portrayed as hideous, gloomy, and everything against the standard beauty. Free ice cream or no free ice cream, we can buy our own scoop, it's no big deal. But the danger and pretty privilege arises when we shift to bigger issues, like how physical attractiveness is correlated with reduced jail time and guilty verdicts and how longitudinal studies have found that more attractive people were less likely to be arrested and convicted than less attractive people. And this has to do with the halo effect. The halo effect also referred to as the halo error is a type of cognitive bias whereby our perception of someone is positively influenced by our opinions of that person's other related

Starting point is 00:08:34 traits. It can shape our perception of others' intelligence and competence and its influence can be seen in many settings ranging from the classroom to the courthouse. A single positive quality of a person may induce a positive predisposition toward every aspect of that person, while one single negative attribute of that person may induce an overall negative impression of that person. Please stop bothering my kid. This explains why. Ted Bundy, a notorious This serial killer, rapist, a necrophile who killed at least 30 people, was glorified by media and even had his own Bundy effect, where groupies of women were fascinated by him and flocked the courtroom when he was on trial. He had his own fan group who actively lobbied for him to be released.

Starting point is 00:09:24 I'm not afraid him. He just doesn't look like the type to kill somebody. Oh, you know, he's gonna get me next. But yet you're fascinated by him. Very, very. or celebrities like Chris Wu, who was arrested in accusation of rape, have a fandom who would not believe any of the accusations that altered his perfect image and were even thinking of jail breaking him. Although these are the extremes, the Halo effect is prevalent

Starting point is 00:09:52 from the way we meet new people to the way we form close relationships. And that is dangerous. It's what's inside that counts. Without it, she would be nothing. The danger for self. Now you might think those on the ends of receiving the benefits of the pretty privileged have a pretty solid life, right? But there is also danger to being the privileged ones.

Starting point is 00:10:20 I've noticed that the younger I look, the more I'm sexually harassed, the more I'm sexualized and the more I'm objectified. But there's also a bad side that nobody talks about. As it is easy to base, your worth on the prettiness defined by others. I hate to break it to you, but no matter how pretty you are, you will always be ugly to some people. Universal beauty does not exist. Because this is a privilege given by the perception of others, it can be taken away just like that.

Starting point is 00:10:53 Some of the prettiest people on this planet are also some of the most insecure. That we never say on camera, that I have never said on camera, is I am insecure. Why? Because they care so much about how others think of the way they look. If you ever are wondering, you know, if I have thinner thighs and shinier hair, will I be happier? You just need to meet a group of models because they have the thinnest thighs and the shiny hair and the coolest clothes. And they're the most physically insecure women probably on the planet.

Starting point is 00:11:21 And I'm insecure because I have to think about what I look like every day. To assume superiority and have an inflated ego because of getting accustomed to an appearance-based privilege is also. dangerous. Y'all don't know anything about pretty privilege. I'm 33 and I still get pretty privilege even though I try really hard to avoid all unwanted attention. Whenever I go to the grocery store, I don't even have to push my cart. I'll be reaching for potato lays and someone gives me a boost. Yeah, they boosts up my butt so I could get some potato lays double folded, salted, salted, regular, 30% less fat. Essentially, you're on the fake high and it's really easy to fall crash when that privilege is gone. Like I really can't win I thought that I would dress

Starting point is 00:12:07 nice looking good presentable and I get something in life at least something give me something as a woman. It could also be very demoralizing if you use your talent and your hard work for all the amazing things you've achieved but everyone else attributes it to the way that you look. His first response was the only reason why you got that job is because of your face. So the way one looks is a double-edged sword. Like I said before, looks and trends come and go,

Starting point is 00:12:43 but confidence is always in style. Or better yet, stop focusing on looks, period. There are so many things to value about a person or yourself beyond the looks. So yes, pretty privilege is dangerous, but we also have the power to avoid the dangers by shifting our focus away from external appearances. So that's all I wanted to share with you today.
