Starting point is 00:00:28 What the hell is ORA and how do you create it? Alexa Demi knows the answer because she is a genius marketer. But she won't be able to tell you. In fact, you might be making the top three mistakes that are dragging you farther from a magnetic brand like hers. But don't worry, I'm here. And I've made all three mistakes personally. As your marketing bestie, who graduated top 1% UCLA business economics with a background in marketing, we are going to reverse engineer.
Starting point is 00:00:57 The top three counterintuitive marketing laws Alexa Demi lives and breathes that effortlessly made her everyone's obsession. Why is everyone so obsessed with Alexa Demi? So obsessed. Alexa, you look like a dream. At the moment, I've been really inspired by my self. The Chanel girl, the Mac girl, the Balenciaga girl. Anything she wears becomes a mood board.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Anything she says becomes a viral sound. Bitch, you better be joking. In any moment, she is a lot. She becomes someone's aesthetic wallpaper. It's all marketing, but not everyone can copy and not everyone should. We'll get to the three levels of what I call a Pinterest test, plus three branding warnings at the end, so you can know if her strategies are right for your brand. You're not gonna moan.
Starting point is 00:01:50 You're gonna listen. By brand, I don't just mean slapping your face on an ad. It is how your future college, future boss, future boyfriend sees you. And yes, you have one. I'm creating this series to analyze pop culture icons from a marketing perspective because I believe business can be fun to learn. Exactly. Exactly. So can marketing be fun to run?
Starting point is 00:02:16 That's exactly what our sponsor free cash is doing. Everyone says that nothing is really free and they're right. Someone is paying. It is the brand paying you to try things. Instead of paying for an ad, you scroll away from. So if you're already playing mobile game or testing a new app, Why not get rewarded from doing it? Before I tested it, I went on Trust Pilot and saw a 4.6 star rating and over 300,000 reviews.
Starting point is 00:02:39 That convinced me to be one of the 104,000 people who signed up in the last 24 hours. Enabled app tracking to allow them to see progress. And I played a little cute game of animals and coins. And bam, cash in. Once you hit $25 in your balance, you can cash out with PayPal, gift cards, bank transfer, or crypto. To give us a head start, they share with me a $10 sign-up bonus when you play your first game. click the link in the description or use a QR code on screen for your bonus. Today's sparkling drink of choice is macha flavored.
Starting point is 00:03:08 To keep our community small to ambitious people who want to understand pop culture through a smarter branding perspective, please do not subscribe if you're not ready to expand your mind. Before we dive into the top three mistakes you're probably making in your brand building, let's first take it back to Alexa 1.0 was born to be a cool girl. Raised by a makeup artist mother, she became involved in performing arts only later in senior year of high school because girl was busy launching a sunglasses line called Mainframe also in high school that Nikki Minaj and Jalo wore. I started creating custom sunglasses for local LA
Starting point is 00:03:44 artists and people really seem to like the design so I decided to take it to the next level and start selling them so these are the silver studded ones these are the beaded fringe and then we have the pearls with the chains and then the all-setted ones which everyone seems to love these. No big deal like Maddie in Euphoria she's been somewhat decisive and leads taste. Alexa also has a really good style in real life. But unlike Maddie, Alexa had a problem. Nobody knew she had the taste.
Starting point is 00:04:14 She wasn't the it girl yet. The sunglasses got discontinued because she didn't get paid for her designs. She tried to release some music. Did the audition route for film and TV, but so was every other talented creative. Trying to make it in Hollywood. What made her different? Alexa 2.0 is synonymous with Maddie and Euphoria.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Perhaps rather than taking the Maddie into her, Alexa made Maddie Perez. What am I maxing? Yeah. Me. Of course. But here's something very counterintuitive. As euphoria spiked in popularity making Alexa more in demand than ever, the glamorous and elusive Alexa Demi.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Unlike the Kardashian way of maximum press coverage, Alexa disappeared. Leading to marketing law number one, Mystique. We all think. we know what it means. And that's where we make our biggest branding mistakes. I'll go over why that is in a moment. Even pre-fame, Alexa was seen in photos with the Kardashians, Grimes and Azalea Banks. This is 2008 with the Kardashians, by the way.
Starting point is 00:05:15 But Alexa never felt the need to share any of that. In fact, she never even writes any captions for any of her posts. In fact, she posted even less on her Instagram, even after she blew up from Euphoria, as lost 16 of Robert Green's 48 laws of power, use absence to increase respect and honor. Quote, too much circulation makes the price go down. The more you are seen and heard from, the more common you appear.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Very correct. Supply and demand. But the next part is where a lot of people get wrong. Quote, if you are already established in a group, temporary withdrawal from it will make you more talked about, even more admired. Emphasis on if you are already established in a group. Most people mistakenly think, oh, duh, I'll just never put myself out there. Out of sight, out of mind.
Starting point is 00:06:02 No, the precondition for the marketing law of mystique is, People need to be curious about you first. There needs to be a seed for imagination. And the key for Alexa Demi is that it is not an act. Sam Levison puts it as, there's an air of mystery to her and you never feel like she's playing a game with it. It's just natural.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Miss Rosalia reinforces the same idea, calling her aura, quote, the cleanest, brightest in all of Hollywood. And that is real power. But you might ask, if she's not doing anything, how do she become the it girl? And that's a genius of marketing law number two. Crowd marketing,
Starting point is 00:06:42 aka the internet did her marketing. But two questions. First, how did she get the internet to be her biggest publicist? Second, why does it go wrong for most brands all the time? Examples, Blake Lively, Katie Perry, Jojo Siwa. To answer her first question, timing matters. Robert Greenslaw isn't disappear forever. It is to disappear at the height of demand.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Always leave people wanting more. And the people will do positive PR for you. TikTok edits, Pinterest moonboards, how do you dress like Alexa Demi, Maddie Perez compilations, makeup tutorials, speculations. None of this was paid. None of it was coordinated. Yet, collectively, they reinforce the exact same brand.
Starting point is 00:07:22 The strongest brands aren't owned by their founders. They are owned by culture. Think about Barbie, Hello Kitty. Content creation is labor, but content inspiration is leverage. To answer the second question of why everything on the internet about Alexa Demi is so positive, A, she leaves the party at its peak, B, also marketing law number three, the Pinterest test. You cannot learn this in a textbook because it is not traditional marketing, but a powerful metric of branding is, can your identity survive without you?
Starting point is 00:07:54 If you search Alexa Demi aesthetic, you'll find thousands of images she never posted, that are super coherent and look aesthetic like a Pinterest mood board. That's when you know her audience has taken ownership of the brand. And the internet has essentially curated an unofficial style guide for her, which ties back to law number two. Why is crowd marketing stronger than any Super Bowl ad? People trust people more than brands. When your friend sends you an Alexa Demi mood board,
Starting point is 00:08:20 it feels like a discovery, not advertising. And I'd break this test down into three levels. Level 1, personal brand. Most people are stuck here or below. People consume your content, you post, they watch. Their relationship ends there. Level 2, community brand. People interact with your content.
Starting point is 00:08:39 They comment, they duet, they stitch. They somewhat co-create, but in level 3. Cultural brand, people create entirely new content inspired by you without your involvement. Think Pinterest boards, TikTok edits, mood boards, fan pages, outfit recreations, makeup tutorials, poor aesthetics, character analyses, quote compilations. The strongest brands stop being people, they become adjectives.
Starting point is 00:09:03 People say, oh, that's so Pinterest, that's so Mewmew, that is so Wes Anderson, that's so Bella Hadid, so Alexa Demi. The goal isn't to make more posts. The goal is to make people create more posts because of you. The moment that your audience starts making more content about you, then you make about yourself, you've stopped being a creator and started becoming a cultural brand. Now should everybody just go copy Alexa Demi and use mystique crowd marketing shoot for level 3 of the Pinterest test?
Starting point is 00:09:33 No. Here are the branding warnings, as I promise. Number one, scarcity doesn't create demand. This is the biggest misconception. If no one knows who you are, disappearing doesn't make you mysterious. It makes you forgotten. Branding warning number two, don't confuse silence with strategy. Some people disappear because they don't know what to pose.
Starting point is 00:09:53 They are scared of being judged. They don't have a clear brand. Alexa Silence is backed by a crystal clear identity. Even when she isn't posting, people already know exactly what she represents. Branding warning number three. Scarcity only works when every appearance delivers. If you post every three months or three years, that post better feel worth waiting for. Luxury brands don't release fewer products because they're lazy.
Starting point is 00:10:18 They release fewer products because the quality is expected to be exceptional. The less you show up, the higher the standard becomes. Instead of copying Alexis' behavior, copy her discipline. She understood what made her valuable and protected it. For someone else, protecting the brand might mean posting every week. Being raw and relatable like Emma Chamberlain. The lesson isn't being mysterious. The lesson is new what people come to you for.
Starting point is 00:10:44 And don't dilute it, chasing more attention. But comment what you think makes her the it girl.
