Starting point is 00:01:34 How did a seven-year mistake in branding of Lizzie Grant almost killed Lana D'Re? That's a great question. I've been wondering that myself. If there was someone born to be a star girl, it must be Lana D'Aire. Naturally, a Hollister model, daughter of an award-winning millionaire marketer, a label deal at 20 years old, but somehow, lucky and pretty privilege, and a whole label. team cannot figure out how the hell to market Lizzie Grant. But you can after this video, as your marketing bestie, who graduated top 1% UCLA business economics with a background in marketing, let's unlock the six branding secrets that turned a Lizzie Grant into the Lana Daray. Each gets more powerful than the last. But more importantly,
Starting point is 00:02:24 how can you take inspo from her story and apply them to your dreams? Because branding is not about putting your name on a CD. Lizzie Grant did and had to pull them down. Oh geez, well, I mean, what can I say now? But the Lana D'Rae, as we know today, built a brand bigger than music. This is the reason for have you this is including mine. Was the sole reason I went to Coachella on a two-day notice last year? Casually creates $13.7 million of media exposure valley for skims and is the literal god to a whole population.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Why are they obsessed with you? I think I have a little bit of a connection with young women. A lot of eclectic folks out there. Yeah. But I also reveal a branding warning at the end because, as you might have guessed, no brand is impeccable. Branding is about how your future college, future boss, future boyfriend sees you. And yes, you have one. I'm creating this series to analyze pop culture icons from a marketing perspective.
Starting point is 00:03:29 So subscribe if you want to learn and free email list. Let's start doing time by paying a visit to pre-lana. Lizzie 1.0 I'm a sad girl, I'm a sad girl. Elizabeth Grant was not meant for an ordinary life. Sent to a boarding school at 14 to get sober from alcohol. Yes, at 14. But unlike many artists who grew up playing the piano or guitar in their mother's womb,
Starting point is 00:03:55 Lizzie Grant picked it up from her uncle at 18, which was also when she began playing in clubs in Brooklyn. clubs in Brooklyn, had back-to-back-to-back rebrands from a jailer, Sparkle Jumprope Queen killer name to then Lizzie Grant. Hi, from Lizzie Grant? Can you imagine listening to Summertime Sadness from your favorite artist, Sparkle Jump Group Queen, or Lus for a Live from a Lizzie Grant? It totally hits the same.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Anywho, Lizzie Grant did get signed to a label and released a three-track EP, Kill Kill, is her unlucky girl syndrome finally. about to end. No, not yet. Kill Kill got kill killed. And her first album, Lana Del Rey with the A.k.a. L.A.A. Lizzie Grant, also got Kill Killed. Even after multiple rebrands, Lizzie Grant was still a flop. Was it the music's fault? No. Although she was experimenting with styles,
Starting point is 00:04:51 Lizzie Grant has the same vocals and thematic overlaps as Lana. So why did none of Lizzie Grant's music see the daylight? While the first music video of Lana allegedly got 20 million views on YouTube the same year it was released. One son of the decade, all from a little video made on a webcam. That's definitely singing, but how the fuck am I going to get there? It's all marketing. Well, the best part about Flops is also that you have nothing to lose. And Lizzie Grant was ready to lose.
Starting point is 00:05:31 it all. RIP Lizzie and hello Lizzie 2.0. Lana del Rey. What in the world did Lizzie Grant's label attempt but cannot figure out? Since the day I began the marketing best series, you guys wanted a Lana episode. That's pretty cool. My girl. Lana's the best. Incredibly life changing for me. And to tell you the truth, I've been waiting for this day. The only issue is there are so many good branding factors that I have to very painfully pick the top six. We made it! Just like if you ask me what is the one thing you can do right now to improve your brand, it'd be very hard to come up with one universal answer.
Starting point is 00:06:18 But because I've actually been recently struggling with my own visual brand with a very scary acne breakout, I realize how the skin is one of the most underrated. But universal part of visual branding. Imagine Lana's ethereal, sad old Hollywood goddess image with acne scars. As a research geek, and from my derm, I was looking for a non-invasive clinical light therapy treatment, but without the clinical fees and time wasted in traffic. That's how I found Cure.
Starting point is 00:06:47 The world's first customizable LED mask. It has three modes, anti-breakout, pro-aging, and custom treatment, all through an app, clinically backed to improve firmness and skin texture, saving me from damage acne skin. No matter how much you invest in your visual brand, in clothes, hair, makeup, if your skin is not healthy, it's like polishing a car without fixing the engine. Listen, even though it's only a small fraction of going to a clinical med spa,
Starting point is 00:07:14 it is still an investment, which is why I asked your team multiple times if we can have an exclusive discount so hopefully more of you can have healthier radiant skin. For a limited time, the first 50 people to use the link in the description will get $300 off the Rejuvali package. Don't miss your chance. Unlock your new glow.

Starting point is 00:08:15 Two days only. Tuesday, April 28th and Wednesday, April 29th. Open your PC optimum app to get your coupon. In the digital age, no matter if the product is audio or visual, a brand needs a visual identity. And this was crucial for forgettable Lizzie Grant. to become culture-shapeer, Lana D'Rae. Starting with hair.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Gone was a blonde that felt a bit washed out and comes the unmissable, fiery red ginger that became a staple for over 14 years. Your hair is your second face. Although Lizzie Grant has the pretty privileged foundation to be a Hollister model, the change in hair made her instantly recognizable. It is no coincidence.
Starting point is 00:08:59 How Ariana Grande's ponytail, I spice's bright orange hair, Sabrina Carpenter's big blonde blowout all happen at the moments they went from kind of known to star status. But if we talk about visual branding, how can we not geek out about color? Just like how we identify Taylor Swift put red, Olivia Rodrigo with purple, Sabrina Carpenter with baby blue. It is such a simple but powerful branding strategy. For Lana, it is the blue in her lyrics and album covers, with a closed secondary palette of ivory and cream and burnt rose. Not many artists can own multiple colors at one time, but she can.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Because of Brandy Secrets 2 and 3 that will touch on in a moment, that make her synonymous with Americana. It dressed with me to go frolic in a field and look like a cute little Lana Del Rey-coated aesthetic farm girl. Hence, Lana Dalry has the flexibility to switch between these colors in her album covers, her outfits, and stay extremely on brand. Can we get a round of applause? Also, that baby blue sparkly dress she wore at Coachella, ethereal entrance. I think the dudes beside me has seven heart attacks.
Starting point is 00:10:17 That's the power of a strong, memorable visual brand. But like I said, each branding secret gets more powerful. This visual brand is enhanced by second association. Let's first address the elephant in the room. The name change. The name Lana D'Rae was actually the start of her genius use of association. Inspired by actress Lana Turner, a symbol of old Hollywood glamour, the name also sounds exotic and reminiscent of the seaside.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Every time you hear a Lana Dorey song, you think of the ocean in Miami, Venice Beach, Mariners Complex, Ocean Boulevard. And every time you're by the ocean, you're reminded of Lana Dore. But it doesn't just stop here. Dau Rui was inspired by the Ford Dau-Dow-Sadon and a Spanish form of the king. Not a surprise. Vintage cars are widely depicted in her songs. another reminder of Lana D'Aray in the daily.
Starting point is 00:11:11 But what is more powerful to the mind is perhaps the way Lana crafts her world, with vivid imagery of cities most listeners are familiar with. L.A. New York, Brooklyn Baby, Venice Bid, Florida Kilos, Hollywood Sign, Long Beach, subconsciously through the lyrics and melody, these cities and states become synonymous with Lana Dore. Every time you hear that song, you think of a city, perhaps a person and every time you're in a city associated with her, damn it you think of her songs.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Oh, you thought that's all. As the Queen of Association, the Laundadouré magic is baked in the association with yet more. Coke, Bulls, Americana, VHS, Palms, Catholicism, Blue Jeans, and Summer. Yes, she owns the whole damn season. How was she able to do this when many other artists also sing about these motifs yet left no impression on you? Third, aesthetic precision. Every era of Lana Daray has a distinguishable aesthetic that are interwoven between the albums.
Starting point is 00:12:11 You have the Lolita aesthetic, Old Money, nostalgia, Americana, and of course, timeless, sad girl aesthetic. But just having an aesthetic is not enough. Lana's aesthetic precision is in that each was ahead of its time, filling a cultural white space that leads trend movements since the Tumblr era. How? Fan identity fusion. She did not create a world just to have fun for herself. No, that's what Lizzie Grant did. Lana Del Rey's world easily invites you in as the main character.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Yes, she allows you to feel like the main character. I had a vision of making my life a work of art and I was looking for people who also felt that way. In addition to lyrics and melodies that feel like a faint dream in a page of journal, the whole aesthetic is replicable. Key statement pieces like bowls, vintage dresses, blue jeans, white tees are so easy to style. And when your style gets copied to a whole mood, that's when you know, you have built real influence. People think I'm obsessed with this, but I'm okay with it. I am obsessed with it.
Starting point is 00:13:19 And I think this is an obsession that doesn't hurt anyone. So much so that even Billy Elish at Coachella honored Lana's influence. My favorite Sad Girl Squad. But the persona is too flat without some branding secret number four. Controlled Controversy. This is not a strategy for beginners, but if done right really enhances the brand, Lana's brand is built on tension. Beauty versus decay.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Innocence versus danger. Love versus violence. Because of this, critics accused her of glamorizing toxicity, abuse, unhealthy relationships, which escalated to the whole question for the culture note that got a little messy, but fails to scratch her brand a bit. If anything, these moments positioned her as a polarizing mythic figure. Instead of a cookie cutter pop girl, has she been going the Taylor Swift route to be your relatable BFF, her career would have been over.
Starting point is 00:14:23 But since the very start, Lana's brand is not mainstream pop. Her move since the first webcam music video was anti-celebrity, fame anti-trend which ties into branding secret number five mystique no you will never find Lana Darwai on a caller daddy podcast you will never know if she's about to date a billionaire or marry an alligator man but yet you are so curious why supply demand scarcity marketing keeps the supply so low so every time you learn anything new about Lana it feels like discovering a rare gem to be cherished she'll disappear for a little while and always appear at the right time when you start to miss her. Therefore, always alluring, always appealing.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Less is more, a lesson that many artists can learn from. Kiti Perry, Georgia Siwa. But all five branding secrets, visual brand association, aesthetic precision, controlled controversy, and mystique would mean nothing without the last. It is so simple yet most overlooked. Branding secret number six, consistency. Why do so many artists peak? Because when they have a video game moment like Lana, that is all there is. But Lana Darae kept refining her brand while staying on brand because Lana Darae wasn't just built in one moment.
Starting point is 00:15:51 She was built since 21 years ago experimenting as Lizzie Grant. Associations can be strengthened but also weakened. It is her dedication to the persona and building the melancholic world of sad art brick by brick in the the last 14 years that moves me the most. Every song, album, motif is a seed planted to create a forest of artistic wonders that most brush off and say, oh, she's just born with it. Most artists create a single, an album at most. But Lana D'Rae built a world.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And this world, though mesmerizing, can still crumble through two branding warnings. First, performance. As early as the 2012 SNL, Lana has faced backlashes for her life. performances. I mean, it's kind of a given. She's not a dance pop, Iron Luns type of singer. It is the more quiet and beautiful art that is meant to be enjoyed more slowly. While recent Torf Ipax described her as quote-unquote blackluster with abysmal low energy and a quote scam, which I think is an expectation issue and quite unbrand with her mysterious, unpredictable woman image. What worries me more is actually. Second, the breaking of character. As much
Starting point is 00:17:05 Just Lana does a great job in not sharing too much of her personal life. Some parts of it still bleeds through and breaks the character of the ethereal goddess. Honestly, very happy for her to find love and be married, but the honeymoon goddess shatters a bit when forever associated with an alligator tour guide from Louisiana. It just breaks the mystique and all the romanticization that points to a picture of the great Gatsby and Lolita instead. Regardless, sometimes a sacrifice to the brand is worth it. because life is too short to be lived to protect the outside brand perception 24-7. But if you love the rebrand of Lizzie Graham to Lana Daray, follow the pot for more.
