is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
10-01 NH-Town.
Good morning.
And welcome to a Thursday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
This is Sports Talk 790.
In Houston, what levels we've had to go to?
We're playing Taylor.
Being Taylor on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Without Ross.
Now, in fairness, I don't have the hate for TV.
Taylor that others do.
I have two women in my life, two of the most important women in my life, my daughter and
my wife, who are huge swifties.
I mean huge.
They have seen her in Arlington.
They have seen her in New Orleans.
And they have seen her in Houston.
My philosophy is I would have been able to retire comfortably or retire on my terms, if not
for the amount of money that I've spent on three Taylor Swift concerts in the last seven to eight
years.
But I digress.
But I always try to figure out some sort of song that fits the mood of the local nine.
And it could be for the Rockets, it'll be for the Texans when their seasons are playing, obviously.
But I couldn't think of any other song to go with, then shake it off because you have to shake it off because you're playing tonight against Baltimore Orioles.
Got to shake it off, man.
You got to shake it off.
Jonathan, you got to shake off a four touchdown beatdown coming up a week from Thursday today.
I'm still shaking off, though.
I know you will.
Because you're resilient.
I'm proud of you, son.
The Astros have to shake it off.
As Robert Ford said, at least he scored.
And there's that.
Gang, I would ask you how you're feeling, but I kind of know.
Yish.
And look, I don't want to ever say goodbye to a player,
especially when that player is good.
But bro, it's time, Framer.
It's been real.
This August meltdown of his,
and there really is no other way to say it,
it's a flat out 100% meltdown.
How do you go from
one quality start after the other,
filthy curveball, high strike count, low ERA,
barely getting to, you know, going seven, eight innings throwing like 85, 90 pitches.
I mean, just as fluid as possible.
To going to, what the hell was that yesterday?
I mean, he couldn't record it out for like a half an hour.
Truth be told.
The Astros on Deck Show is over at, what, 1135, 1140 yesterday.
I told the family, I said, hey, let's go have lunch because, as you know, in this 10 to 2 spot,
I don't get to have lunch with my family very often.
So we met, and by the time I got to the restaurant, we had our lunch, it was a Chinese restaurant,
General So's chicken, deliciouso.
It was 5-0.
I was like, oh, hell no.
Frumber.
First of all,
it's like, man, if something doesn't go perfect,
and I'm not necessarily talking about yesterday,
but a ball is dropped,
an infield single, an error,
not backing up a play,
he melts like delicious drawn butter at a lobster dinner.
What is, I can't have my ace doing that.
And by the way, that cap is off.
Hunter Brown inherited, it's yours,
because you pitched like an ace a couple of days ago.
I know I'm supposed to deep breath.
I know I'm supposed to be the voice of reason,
but you're getting your blank kicked in the top of the first inning.
That's your ace.
I mean, certainly no disrespect to Jason Alexander or Colton Gordon or any of the other pitchers that have gone.
A.J. Bluebaugh.
Ryan Gusto, now he's residing in Miami.
But that's what those guys do.
Because either they're not good enough or they're not experienced enough or they're just getting their feet wet as major league players.
You can't do that when you're the co-ace of this baseball team.
So you know what?
You're no longer the co-ace.
You're the solid number two.
You've been playing like a number two if you know what I mean.
But yet.
I got it.
I got it.
Thank you, Jonathan.
It was a delayed a reaction.
I appreciate you.
But yet.
as bad as things were yesterday, and I mean
embarrassingly bad.
We can always thank the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies
kicked the crap out of the Mariners
11 to 2.
I mean, so the Astros,
who are playing about 400 baseball
for about a month now,
still have a game and a half lead.
As my friend Taylor Swift would say,
and we are friends,
although she doesn't know why.
am. She told you to shake it off. I ask you to shake it off. It's a brand new series in Baltimore.
And new staff ace, well, co-ace, Jason Alexander will throw today for the local nine against
Brandon Young. Brandon Young, who nearly perfect game the Astros last week, one in six with an
area of 5.68. It's time for revenge. We have a busy radio show today. Ross is off, by the
way and yes he does get vacation time so he's a lot to take it which means it's a lot of you
and it's a lot of me we've got some great guests coming up along the way on the show this morning
and this afternoon and we want you to be a part of the program first and foremost in his first
hour especially it's 713212 5790 713 212 5790 that's how you reach a show I did ask you guys on
Twitter if shank it off was okay or using a Taylor Swift song was okay.
The final results are in.
185 votes were in. I put the poll of question in for like an hour and a half.
And it went right down the middle.
50% said, sure, why not?
50% said no, just no.
Is that how America feels about Taylor?
Or as my daughter calls her, Taitay?
Is there a segment of the population that's willing to be a
Taylor Swift fan that just won't admit it because if you do so, then you're considered
not very popular among your friends and your family.
Your man car will be asked for.
Again, I don't listen to her songs typically.
I don't have any on my phone, but if we're all in the car going somewhere together
and the girls want to put it on, it ain't the worst thing I've heard.
And by the way, Kansas City chief fans seem to love her for some reason and ratings for her
games than when she's in the stands at Arrowhead Stadium,
tend to be a little higher than normal
Kansas City Chief Games, but I digress.
So we did it today.
This may be the first time of the history of the show.
We've played a Taylor Swift song to open up the program,
but sometimes you have to do unnecessary things to get necessary results.
And the results are the Astros need to win this series.
Because the Astros can gain a game, a half game on the Orioles today
because the Orioles are not, excuse me, the Seattle Mariners,
I don't believe are playing.
Let me look at the old Skedge here.
No, they're not.
They will start a weekend series at home.
Oh, against the A's.
Oh, hell.
All right, gang.
You know the Mariners don't lose at home.
The A's suck.
The Baltimore Orients suck, except for what we saw last weekend.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Brian Bogus Civic with us at 11 o'clock today.
Shut you bummer.
ass up at 1130.
And I'm going after a restaurant food chain on Shut Your Bumass up at 1130.
Okay.
All right.
An entire chain.
You hear me?
Well, the news at noon.
Adam Amin will join this program.
You're like, Matt, who's Adam Amin?
The name sounds somewhat familiar.
Adam Amin is a Fox broadcaster.
He has done lots of Astro games over the years.
In fact, he's done a playoff series, I think, with the Astro.
a few years back.
Adam Aeneen is one of the nicest people
you will ever
meet in sports broadcasting,
especially on the national level.
He is calling tonight's game on Fox
with A.J. Prisinski.
It is a Fox regional game today.
It's not the main game. The main game is
Boston Yankees, but the Astros O'Ores
is the other Thursday night
baseball night in America game on Fox.
We'll have him join us at 1230.
The season debut
of Dr. Roto at 1 o'clock.
and I don't know, I think Roto's been with us like 13 or 14 years.
It's been a great run, great run.
Dr. Roto to get ourselves ready for our fantasy football drafts at 1 o'clock.
And, of course, we've got, believe it or not.
But the first hour is a lot of you and a lot of me.
And if you don't, call in and say hi, whether it be about the Astros,
whether it be about the Texans getting ready for their season opener,
you're going to be hearing a lot of SFA and Lumberjack football breakdown from Jonathan,
and God knows nobody wants that.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-790.
Framber Valdez, there's no one that's claiming and screaming and calling for a long-term extension.
There's no one I don't think in the marketplace that's calling for a short-term extension
or something that's an astro-contract-friendly extension.
It feels like to me, you tell me if I'm wrong, Houston, Texas.
that it's Frumber, go get us some wins.
Go help this team win the American League West.
Go help this team make a deep playoff run.
And then we will wish you fond farewell wherever you may go.
Because my God, his August sucked.
713-212-5-790.
Remember when Framber about three or four weeks ago questioned his team's defensive shift?
since then
six
innings six
runs five of which were earned
against Boston
then five and two-thirds
giving up four runs against the Yankees
then he did go
six and two-thirds
gave up three earned runs
against Baltimore but the
Astros didn't have a hit until very late
in the game
and then seven runs given up
yesterday on seven hits
with four walks and two strikeouts.
Frumber, I mean, the meltdown is...
I don't know if he's mad at the world.
I don't know if he's mad at the Astros.
I don't know if he's thinking about his pending free agency.
I don't know if it's just a bad rut.
But the man we are watching pitch every fifth day for the Astros,
and God bless him he's able to go every fifth day,
at least he's been able to avoid injury.
The same guy we've seen in the last month
than we saw in the first three months of this baseball season.
It is absolutely incredible how things have completely fallen off the map.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-90.
Brian Bogusevick is with us in 40 minutes.
You may join us right now at 7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Doug is with us on the Matt Thomas Show.
Dee, what's going on?
What's up, brother?
How are you, man?
Amazing.
So how much money is Framber losing with every start that he does this?
I mean, you've got to think about it in what?
Max Fried got eight years, $200-something million?
Isn't that what he got from the Yankees?
I'm looking it up right now.
So, I mean, the way I look at it is that Frambert can be pissed off
and whoever he wants to be pissed off at, but the dude has costing himself money
because he's not going to be an astro.
Unfortunately, I have heard that there's a lot.
a pending offer out there from the Astros,
three for a hundred,
which, I mean, if I were him at this point,
I'd go ahead and take that because that's how it's money,
because I really don't think that he's going to get much more,
much north of 30 million.
Wouldn't you think?
Yeah, Max Freed's contract is eight years of 218,
which makes it $27 million per year.
I'm going to tell you, and I don't know this for a fact,
but I'm going to go as an educated guest, Doug,
that the person that told you that is,
whack because why would you give him $33 million a year for three years?
That is, that is a short term contract.
Yeah, but that isn't even, that's not even fair value.
I mean, that's just, that's annual average value way over the top, way over the top.
If Framber had had three or four stellar starts and you still can pull that trigger on that
deal, I think you would.
I mean, if he's good for Amber, he's worth $33 million a year.
I just don't know how long.
he's going to be able to hold up.
But because, again, like you pointed out,
the dude has never had any injury issues,
and that worries the crap out of me,
especially as you get older,
because of the fact that he can just,
I don't know if he can continue on
with that amount of torque on his elbow.
Yeah, I mean,
um,
I mean,
look, this is a moot conversation.
I mean, Doug, you know, you've listened to show long,
if you know, he wasn't coming back a year and a half ago.
This was,
when you don't even make an awful.
to him.
This was a non-conversation piece.
Now, can people change their minds?
Of course.
Can the ownership group say, you know what?
We've rethought about this and we want to have you here, of course.
Could Framper say, look, I don't want to go test for agency?
I like it here.
This is the only place I've ever known.
And sometimes familiarity is a factor in things.
It typically isn't in sports, but sometimes it is.
And maybe the Astros knew that.
maybe the Astros knew at the end of the day that this is what he does,
that it's not a matter of if, but when he starts to feel the pressure of this,
but this is the absolute worst time for him to be having his worst baseball all the season
because you need him.
You've got a team that is beset by injuries.
You have an offense that is non-existent.
You need your veteran leader, your front-end, co-ace, whatever you want to call it,
to go through the fight through all of the negativity,
and instead he put you behind the eight ball before the games.
People weren't sitting down having their first hot dog with yesterday.
And I'm right there with you, Matt.
And like you said, thanks, man.
Thanks for the memories as far as I'm concerned with Framber.
Because like you said, I think the Astros know Framber a little bit better than anybody else on the planet.
And they know if the dude is not right in his head, he is not going to be able to pitch well.
And I think we've been lucky.
We've had a good stretch, you know, for about two to three years.
I would even say 22.
I mean, he pitched well in that playoff run.
But I don't know, dude.
I think it's just a situation where maybe he's starting to think that, you know,
I've got to pitch out of my mind in order to get this long-term contract and have.
I mean, everybody would feel the pressure of that, of course.
But what I just don't get is that the fact that, like you said,
He sits there and goes out and questions the defensive alignment.
When the dude falls apart anytime he throws a wild pitch.
So it's like, come on, man.
Take a look in the mirror.
Like, everybody's going to make mistakes as a defensive player.
But when you throw wild pitches and you can't recover from that,
like that's just garbage, man.
And we're just seeing way too much of it and I'm tired of it.
Well, I got news for you, Doug, and thank you for the phone call.
you're going to be looking at him for another month and change.
And hopefully it's two months.
Because it's two months, it means the Astros are making a deep playoff run.
By the way, remember when we were talking three or four weeks ago about it being,
man, it's going to be awesome maybe to have the number two seed in the playoffs
and a number, you know, a fight with Detroit for the number one overall seed?
And then Toronto got really good for a while.
And the Astros regressed a little bit.
This is probably a week before the All-Star break.
Have you all looked at the American League standings lately?
The Astros are four and a half games behind Toronto for the number two seed.
The Astros are going to open the playoffs, whether they are the division champs,
or they are one of the long cards, having to play that first series.
So you've got basically two months, or actually, excuse me, you got less than that.
You got, what, six weeks maybe?
Five weeks to get your pitching order in rotation, whatever that may be.
and Lance McCullors will pitch this weekend.
Maybe get him back.
Does Jason Alexander keep his way in there?
Can Frumber fix this before the end of the season?
Because Hunter Brown kicked ass in or not.
You guys know that.
He deserved a better fate.
He was ready to go against Tarik Scubal.
I ain't scared of Tarcq Scoobel.
No way.
I go win.
I'll do whatever it takes.
Oh, my goodness.
Very, very frustrating.
I'm very disappointed.
Look, and we love Charlie Morton.
But Charlie Morton, I mean,
ain't the same Charlie Morton we saw of yesterday year.
Now he's had back-to-back good starts,
but he beat the Minnesota Twins
who are basically a AAA team right now,
and he beat the Astros who can't score any runs
except for what we saw from Dubon yesterday.
It's just aggravating, friends.
It just is.
And I'm trying to keep it cool.
I'm trying to, because that's what you come to here to me
10 to 2 weekdays, trying to keep it cool.
But sometimes you're just like,
ah, Frumber.
Seriously, you all sat down to lunch, listen to the game on 790,
maybe you over a tire brewing having a couple of pops,
and your team was down 5-0-0.
I mean, God, that's not only his fault, but yesterday was a big part of it.
Of course, the Astro bats haven't been their best either.
Back on the phones in a minute, 713-212-5-790.
It's kind of nice not having someone just argue with you constantly,
but every one of your right takes and his takes are wrong.
Oh, boy.
Jonathan, why do you know, I mean, we're close enough now.
You know his takes are whack.
You know he just, every time I'm to tell the truth, he doesn't win, what does he do?
He gets defensive.
Don't put you in this.
You're involved, head and intimately.
Come Monday, you're going to be like, oh, I miss Ross.
Watch.
What you did you do last time?
Oh, did I?
Okay.
Maybe I will miss him a little bit.
Let me tell you again, Bogus Epic joining us today.
By the way, tomorrow, I'm very excited about this.
Eddie Nunez, the athletic director at the University of Houston,
and we're going to talk to him in studio.
He's going with us for an hour between one and two tomorrow.
And that's where Jonathan is going to start his SFA smack talk with the AD at the University of Houston.
And then he's going to tell Willie Fritz next Tuesday when he joins us,
how bad the lumberjacks are going to be with the cougars, aren't you, Jonathan?
Oof, just way, guys, just wait.
Mm-hmm.
I don't think that's going to be.
I won't chicken out.
I promise.
No, no, no, I'm not putting you in that spot.
I don't want to embarrass you.
I don't want your girl to leave you.
I mean, we don't need that.
We need you to have a strong internal relationship with the country.
girl.
713,
212,
5, 790.
So Eddie Nune is with us
for an hour
tomorrow to talk.
Not necessarily
about what's going
on at UH,
but obviously it'll be
a prime focus,
but just the whole
college landscape
because I don't know
about you guys and gals
out there,
but I am thoroughly
confused by NIL,
the revenue sharing,
the paying of the players,
and we're going to try
to have him give us
a very condensed
NIL transfer portal
paying athletes for dummies
course.
And we'll have that
tomorrow in studio
from one
clock until two right here on sports talk 790 back on the phones we go brian and parliands with us at
1035 brian good morning to you
md haven't you always said that ross is the anchor that holds you from going national and
flourishing you know coast to coast you know so you know maybe it's easier two days to spread
your wings and fly a little bit do you know what brian i'm going to tell you this is a god's on
his truth i would never ever ever want to do a national radio show you're saying
Oh, yeah, no, you've said that before.
Yeah.
No, you've said that before.
First of all, when you do a national show, you have no passion for any teams.
You have to talk about everybody.
Well, I don't want to do that.
I don't want to get into a deep dive breakdown if Aaron Rogers is going to be successful in Pittsburgh or not.
I mean, that's worth maybe of a segment or so on a rando day on this show.
But I want to talk about the teams that I care about.
And I could give two craps about the Los Angeles Chargers.
I don't care at all.
about whether or not USC football is relevant.
I mean, I love you, Sean, but you know what I'm saying.
When you do national, you have to pretend to like everything.
Well, that's not human.
That's not what people want to do.
I want to talk about what is involved in the city, which I'm in,
and if it happens to be a team that I love, which are the Astros and the Rockets,
it makes it better.
Now, the money obviously is really good, but more importantly,
Brian Mosso shows don't really do very well.
I mean, Colin Cowers got a decent following.
But that's really about it.
I mean, the national radio bit is very, very, very overrated.
No, I got you.
No, I know you've said before you don't.
I'm just, I'm giving Ross a hard time.
You should.
That's what I'm always here for.
You're giving him a hard time is what I live for.
Yes, Brian.
Exactly.
But, no, real quick, you know, I think the Stroves, I mean, God, it's like,
could this month get any worse?
But, you know, I guess in a way, yes, it could.
There's still a few days left.
But what I'm surprised about is the fact that, honestly,
was as bad as Jesus Sanchez has been going,
and Kim Smith right now,
I think you're starting to see that the lights are getting bigger
than maybe he imagined.
And it's no knock on him.
I mean,
he went straight from Florida State to A ball to the big,
so there's still a huge learning curve for him.
But why not just bring up Yordon?
It can't be any worse than some of those at bats you're getting.
And I'm not saying there's not a process,
but he could be having those at bats here
and giving you the same result,
essentially the Jesus Sanchez has been given you,
but maybe changing the dynamic of that lineup a little bit
and just the way it works
and maybe relieve some pressure on some of those other guys
as opposed to continue to toil him at Corpus Christi
for a few more days.
You can work that schedule out of him, you know,
playing today, playing tomorrow, taking off Saturday
and, you know, maybe Sunday or whatever,
and do that with the big league club and provide some help
because finally these, you've seen all these injuries now
that they were fighting through,
in June and putting up that halacious record,
they've come back to Bichin now.
This Jake Myers not being able to stay, you know,
to return to the field and taking way too long.
But I think in the offseason,
whenever we get there, the actuals have to do a major internal dive.
And Jim Crane himself as to what their return to play policy is,
what are they missing?
Because you don't see Tommy John surgery with other teams
taking two and a half, almost three years like it is,
with Luis Garcia.
I mean, we're going on almost three full seasons of him missing because he was out,
what, early 23, I think, and he's been out all of 23, all of 24, and now most of 25.
That shouldn't be normal.
Something is being missed or being overlooked, but I'm still not giving up complete hope
because you do have three against Toronto still, granted it's up there.
But if you could somehow, in baseball is a weird game, Matt, we all know this,
you somehow go up there, pull off a sweep.
Not only do you own the season tiebreaker against them,
you cut into that massive lead,
and then, you know, you go in and maybe take two or three in Seattle
or can keep it close.
All right, you know, hopefully you can put them away a little bit
and stretch this lead out a little bit
and hopefully get some of those guys back.
But, yeah, I don't get why you wouldn't have Yordon up here
just taking those swings here because they're going to be at least as competitive
as what Jesus Sanchez has given you right now
with some of these other outfield at bats you're getting.
So hopefully, you know, our staff ace today can keep us in it.
And maybe now that we've seen this Brandon Young kid,
it'll, you know, at least only keep us down to being no hit as opposed to perfect game.
You know, hopefully they can at least at worst split against Baltimore,
but you need to be taking three or four at this point.
But right now, just win a game.
Start with that.
And then you go to Lou Brown method of we want.
one, you know, we win one today, we win one tomorrow, you know, it has happened before.
So, you know, hopefully then get some good mojo, getting out of Detroit and get some better at
bets.
But, yeah, I'd have Yordon up there today, not down on Corpus, but that's me.
Thanks, Brian, for the call.
A couple things.
You know, originally, I would have said Yordaun needs to just get his A-Bs to.
down in Corpus, get his mojo back, and then the schedule works out best for him to return
on Tuesday at home against Colorado.
And I think I'm going to stay with that, although it's very hard for me to just overly defend
that thought because of the fact the team is just struggling so badly that if he's getting swings,
but I also don't know how he's feeling today.
I mean, he could be like, man, I need to get back in the rhythm.
I don't want to go up there and look like I'm a deer in headlights.
You know, if he needs another game and another day off.
I mean, here's what we don't know everybody.
We don't know how much he's going to be able to play.
Does he need a day in between games?
Does he play consecutive games?
You know, where are the hands?
Is he able to make solid contact?
And let's face it.
getting yourself and your mojo back at the double A level
when you haven't swung a bat in a competitive game since May.
It may be the right elixir.
It might be the right formula,
but it also, you know,
get yourself a slow work back into the mainstream
of playing professional baseball again.
But also, I mean, if you call them and said,
Matt, the Astros desperately need a bat.
Yeah, you're right.
I can't, I couldn't, if you called me and said,
man, I demand us to your order.
I don't know.
They're not going to listen to you, but it wouldn't be the worst thing if he jumped on a plane after tonight's game,
sat out tomorrow and played Saturday Sunday if he could.
You know, as Dana Brown said yesterday on the show and you can take it for what it's worth,
he said, look, you know, everybody wants life in a microwave and you want to speed through this
and you just, you know, get things heated up and it just doesn't work that way.
Again, they have not given me any intelligence about how he feels today,
what kind of swing he's going to get,
how he felt after his performance,
and how much more he needs.
So you have to kind of think of it
in this particular viewpoint of macro.
Yeah, it's going to suck if the astrobatts continue
to be woefully quiet like they were in Detroit
and in Baltimore,
and if they do that four more times.
But at least if he gets back and plays Tuesday,
you still have him for a month plus.
And as bad as things have been,
and this is the thing we have to kind of keep in the back of my mind
or maybe in the forefront.
The Astros didn't lose any ground.
The Mariners not only lost, but they got their ass kicked.
I mean, they absolutely got beaten to a pulp by Philadelphia.
Not that a 4-3 loss means lesser more than an 11-2 loss,
but you get my drift on this.
I mean, they're probably going,
damn, we couldn't take advantage of the Astros not being able to score.
And this is what happened to us.
It's going to set up those games against,
the Mariners in Houston in a few weeks to be very, very, very important.
On the Tommy John stuff, yeah, Luis Garcia, it's been a long road to recovery,
and I don't even know if they know what to do.
You know that you see what the JP France situation is.
They didn't bring him up to activate him.
So I don't know what's going on, but his rehabilitation stint is over,
and now they're kind of in a wait-and-see mode with him.
Could very well be the same situation with Luis Garcia,
because Garcia did get plastered pretty hard in his last spring performance,
or his last minorly performance.
but on the positive, Christian Javier had, I think, Tommy John or the surgery 14 months ago.
So he came back in normal time.
So it's not always about what the doctors for the Astros are doing or the rehabilitation.
It's also the athlete as well.
Christian Javier came back on a normal time.
Unfortunately, Luis Garcia has not.
1044.
It's a Matt Thomas Show at Ross.
Ross is off for the next handful of days.
I'm with you today until 2 o'clock.
Brian Bogusevich will join this radio program.
today in just about 15 minutes.
You may join us right now at 713-212-5-790.
That's 7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Shut your bum-ass up in 40.
I'm going after an entire hotel restaurant chain.
It made me the first time I've ever going to do this.
And it's a combination.
I just don't get it and shut your bum ass up.
So we got shut your bum ass up.
But I've got time for that coming up at about to 40 minutes from now.
7-13-212-5-6.
790, 713, 212, 5790.
If you want to visit with us via Twitter,
let's continue on the phones and talk to Vince and Katie on 790.
Hi, Vince.
Hey, Maddie, how you doing, bud?
What's going on, VG?
Oh, man, I'm doing all right.
Man, I was convinced I was going to Big City Wings for the lunch special today,
and then you started talking about Chinese food.
Now I'm a little bit conflicted.
I know, that's how I feel.
You know what?
Go to Big City Wings.
What is today?
Today is Thursday.
It's the buy one to get one free boneless wing.
You're all good on that.
I'm there.
I'm there.
So regarding Fromber, man, I had called you last season.
I think Fromber was going through a rough stretch at the end of the season,
and then he lost game one against the Tigers in the wild card series.
And I called you, and I said, I think Fromber cheats.
And I'm going to go back to that.
And I don't know what he's doing or how he's.
he does it. I don't know if he's throwing a modern day spitter with Vaseline or if he's doing the
opposite and he's using what they used to call the sticky stuff, right? I think it was a combo of
mud and pine tar. And, you know, maybe he, I think he's really smart and maybe he studies who's
going to be behind the plate and he knows which umpires are more vigilant about policing nefarious
activities on the mound, and maybe he picks and chooses the games in which he's going to cheat.
Because to me, he could look so good for like four, five, six games in a row.
And then he goes out there, and he's terrible for a couple of games.
And I'm not sure that, you know, maybe he does have a fragile psyche or fragile mindset,
but I think he cheats, man.
Well, the problem with that is, first of all, I can't prove that.
Secondly, you know, they check his glove and they check his hands multiple times in a game.
It's just about impossible.
As a matter of fact, I'm going to go one step further, Vince.
I think it's completely impossible to cheat on the mound anymore.
I just do.
The umpires check those hands and those gloves all the time.
They just, you wouldn't be, you wouldn't escape a start where they, you know, like,
Sometimes if you are a part of a company that requires drug testing that you might get drug tested one day in January and one in February and three days in March, they check the hands and the gloves multiple times every time they start.
So that, to me, it makes it impossible.
You don't think that's what's happening at all.
At all. Zero percent chance.
All right, man.
I hope he can pick it up for the remainder of the season and, you know, go Astros.
I'm just going to tell you, I appreciate this set of it.
You'd like for this, but yeah, there's just, there's just no way.
I just, I can't prove it.
I can't prove it to you that that's, that a pitcher's not gone away with something,
but that would be just about impossible.
You see, that's what we're doing, gang.
We're trying to figure out, I got my man Vince call me,
he believes that sometimes he's getting away with stuff.
That's how we're trying to figure it out.
You know what it is, honestly, gang?
Fromber's mental makeup just isn't the same as some other pitchers in the sports.
I mean, we have so much evidence of it.
And I'm not saying that Fromber's a bad dude.
I'm not saying that Frommberg, it doesn't have value because when he spins it properly,
he's as fun to watch as anybody you can see on a mound in baseball.
You don't, you can't tell me that you don't take great delight in watching him
throw seven innings of three-hit ball with nine strikeouts.
in this big nasty 12-6 curveball, these guys at the plate for other teams are anticipating
and they just can't make very much hard contact or they swing and miss of the strike can count.
When he is on, it is like listening to a beautiful chorus of singers and a choir or at a symphony.
But man, when he is off his rocker and a little soft hit drops or a ball is not played properly
or he fails to defend his position.
It's like terrible 1983 punk rock.
It's choppy.
It's uneven.
He sweats profusely.
Now, he's a sweater as it is.
Look, I used to be a sweater too.
Until I lost a lot of weight, but that's not here nor there.
But there is, and that's why Carlos Correa is kind of like a big help for this squad.
It's because he can go out there and say, Frasper, calm down.
Get over yourself.
You're a major league pitcher.
with plus stuff.
His stuff's still there.
It's not like his Velo's down.
It's not like his curveball doesn't break, but man,
you know, you,
you just have some guys
that have been your favorite pitchers over the years
that just said, give me the damn ball,
and I'm not allowing anything to get in my way
of pitching to my team a nice, long game.
And frankly, he had to go as long as it yesterday
because the bullpen's been spent.
So, you know,
he was going to have to wear it, and he did wear it yesterday.
I mean, was there a part of me that maybe if he was thinking,
just somebody come get me?
I hope that wasn't the case.
But, I mean, gosh.
I mean, yesterday it was like watching somebody that made his major league debut
that had no idea how to throw a strike.
And, man, it's crushing because as he's gone south,
the team has gone south.
He threw 96 pitches in five innings.
Because you know what, that's what, Joe's like, you're going to wear this.
You want to put us in this, you're going to go out there and you're going to,
you're going to throw your, you're going to throw your pitches.
Now, he's not doing it as a punishment.
He's doing it as a necessity.
And let's give credit to Dillo Santos and Dubin and Van Way.
I mean, they did their jobs.
But that's not a high-powered octane bullpen to finish off a game against the Tigers.
That's a, let's just make sure we don't lose any of our high leverage guys,
because A, we can't score and B, the guy that was supposed to be our number one starter,
or at least number two starter, put us in a hole before we were able to sit down and relax
and start watching the game.
More of this with our friend Brian Bogusivik to start the second hour, the Matt Thomas show at Ross.
We take it until 2 o'clock today at 713-213-2-5-790.
7-19.
11-1, Sports Talk, 790.
Let's spend 10-quarter minutes with our friend Brian Bogusevick.
on TV duty yesterday, so we switched him to today, and he joins us here on 790.
Bogie, it's great to hear your voice, as always.
Help me, we spent the first hour trying to figure out what has happened to our favorite left-hander,
who has had a disastrous month of April.
Hunter Brown knew the situation was tight against Tarik's school.
He had to be as good as he possibly could, and he was for those innings that he threw.
Astros needed a lengthy game.
They got their five innings from their start.
and Framber Valdez, but it was more of a, hey, we got nobody else.
You're going to have to wear this a little bit.
Yeah, it was certainly disappointing, you know, seeing Framber not really go out there
and rise to the occasion.
I think you've got to look at it through two different lenses.
You know, first of all, the physical, right?
Like, this is two out of his last three starts where the sinker hasn't had the right
shape.
The curveball has been pretty ineffective.
And so that's kind of a, you've got to sit down.
You got to look at some video.
You've got to work on your mechanics in between starts and get that right.
You know, when he's kind of feeling for his sinker a little bit and you see the velocity
really varying, that's when you can tell he's trying to find the right shape and the right
release point.
And he just didn't have it yesterday.
But that happens throughout the course of the season.
That's something that you can fix.
That is unfortunate that it's happening now, but it just is what it is.
The other side of it is kind of looking at it from, you know,
where's Fromm Beret mentally, right? This is something that we've seen pop up throughout the course
of his career is when things don't go his way, frustration builds and it snowballs on him. And,
you know, innings get away from him and, you know, he kind of becomes his own worst enemy. And,
you know, we've never seen it like yesterday where it almost felt like he was frustrated going
into the game. Usually it takes a blue pit, you know, some guys bunting on him and trying to steal bases
to really kind of rattle him a little bit. It almost felt like,
like going into that game with where the offense has been.
It was almost like a, you know, instead of going into that game thinking, I'm going to be the guy that elevates us.
I'm going to be the guy that, you know, even if we're not scoring runs, I'm going to throw up a bunch of zeros and give us a chance.
It almost was a, oh, man, you know, we're not going to score any run.
It's going to be harder than it should be.
It was almost a defeated before you went out there kind of feeling.
And that's really concerning because you need your best guys to be the guys that kind of stand up and say, hey, you made an error behind me.
I'll pick you up.
You guys in Scornie Runs, I'll pick you up.
And that start to the game yesterday certainly was not that.
And, Brian, we've got to be fair here.
We don't want to be psychologists on the radio show.
We want to be people that talk about the game.
You've played the game.
You know the intricacies of it.
But it is a pretty fair assertion to say that if you're seeing that before the game,
that's a huge cause for concern.
Now, he could have his daubber down and then go throw seven innings of three hit ball and spin and beautiful and get the high strike count.
And we'd be like, well, that's just Framer Vian Frommer.
But it's so disheartening because, you know, I thought Hunter Brown went in there going.
Terrick Scoople is one of the best pitchers in the game.
I've got to be my very best.
And I thought he had the moxie to do that.
And I guess the thing is not every player you've ever played with Brian Bogusevich or every pitcher you've been with or you've covered or talked about or played it with.
Has that moxie of, I don't care what's going against us,
I'm going to fight through it,
and maybe Framber is just one of those guys.
But at the same time, we've seen him come up big in big situations
and playoff games in the past.
So it's not really that.
It's more of just getting him into the right headspace,
because we know from experience that he can be a guy that can go out there
and thrive in pressure-packed situations.
And, you know, sometimes it builds start-over-start.
There's been some things that haven't gone Frommber's way,
even when he's been really good in a couple of starts recently.
So it's really just getting him in the right space.
You know, in between starts, you've got to work on things mechanically in your bullpen sessions,
but you also got to get in the right headspace.
And I think, you know, having a strong clubhouse, you know, having Carlos Correa back,
having El Tubei there to kind of sit down with him and reassure him that, you know,
we're all in this with you and we need you.
I think that's kind of where you got to get him to because if he's right,
I mean, I'm not talking about physically, right,
but when he's right and he's going out there and taking on that challenge,
I mean, he's been up to it in the past.
Brian Bogus-Evick with us here on Sports Talk 790.
Bogie, this lineup construction, that's where I think a lot of folks will call me and say,
hey, why is this player in front of this guy?
Why is this guy hitting in this part of the order?
And look, Joe's just trying to find something that works.
And unfortunately, when you've had such little offense, the last handful of days,
it's well.
try, flip, move different guys around.
Generally speaking, your assessment of the lineup in terms of its up and down changes,
I don't think there's much to do with it because it's not like it's been a certain pocket of players that have done their job.
It just felt like a collective slump among the entire team, thus the case with no runs being scored except for the two-run home or yesterday afternoon.
Yeah, I mean, you only have the tools that are at your disposal.
And, I mean, we've seen lineup tweaks throughout the course of the season where if there's only a handful of guys who have it going,
you know, Joe's really tried to bunch those guys up so you have some semblance of, you know, guys stringing at backs together.
The problem right now is that it's not really going that way for anybody.
And you can only make a lineup out of what you got.
And, you know, they dropped Sanchez down in the lineup a little bit.
But, you know, at some point, the lineup is what it is and the roster is what it is.
and it's on the players to go out there and hit.
You can try to find favorable matchups
and kind of give yourself advantages in the margins.
But when the players aren't hitting,
it doesn't matter if you're hitting first or you're hitting nice, honestly.
Bogey, this team has had its offensive roles
really more so consistently as compared to being a team
that's putting up 7, 8, 9 runs.
To me, this has been kind of a bipartisan.
product of you've got a lot of guys getting a lot of
A-Bs that maybe are playing the most.
I'll use Cam Smith as an example.
Taylor Tremel has been a guy that's been up and down
with a variety of different teams.
Jacob Melton looks like he's not necessarily
ready for the big time of Major League Baseball.
How much of that is, do you think,
is the moment right now
is really big for a lot of these young men
who have not gotten as many professional at bats like this.
How much of this is dog days
and how much of this is, my God, Yordon,
please make sure your hands feel good.
We need you in the heart of the lineup as soon as humanly possible.
I think the biggest thing is, you know, middle of the order, major league hitters, run producers, big time hitters like Yordon or guys like him, aren't very common.
And you can find guys who are swinging a hot bat and have them in the middle of the order for a while.
And you can, you know, play a hot hand for a little bit.
But, you know, at the end of the day, to have a, you know, big-time offense that consistently produces runs, you need the horses to do it.
And, you know, they did a great job for a long time getting by piecing together a lineup and having guys put in situations where they can thrive and getting production out of the bottom of a lineup of guys who are just kind of filling in roles.
You know, a lot of that has to do with you need your big guys up at top producing so the guys further down the lineup can just be, you know, supplementing.
that. But, you know, at the end of the day, you become who you are. And, you know, Cam Smith is a guy who
was in college last year. And some of these other guys were guys that were not necessarily going to be
counted on as everyday players. And when you get thrust into that role, at some point, it's
going to get exposed a little bit. And, you know, if they're going to score runs consistently
and be a productive offense consistently, it's got to be from the guys who can do it. And getting
Jordan back will be helpful and getting Altova hot again will be helpful and getting Christian
Walker going will be helpful. But yet, you're not going to consistently score runs if you're just
trying to piecemeal a lineup together. How much did the former outfielder and you feel for Taylor
Tremont at Hinty took in the first thing of the game yesterday? You know what? First of all,
that's the position that you're in physically there where you're on a dead sprint backwards,
but at the same time you're trying to kind of fight to keep the ball from from paling over your head so you're leaning back like that's the worst position you can be in to run face first into the wall so yeah that that doesn't feel good but this is you know one of the things where you point at and you say okay the team's not playing well they're not hitting well they're not winning games you know how frustrating is it you know is joe spotted going in the clubhouse and flipping tables and stuff but it's like you've got guys literally running face first into the wall i mean the night before taylor taylor tremont
laid out on the warning track and landed flat on his back.
So there's no lack of effort.
There's no lack of playing hard.
And so, yeah, I feel for guys going out there and trying to put in that effort
and still not getting the results that they want, but, you know, it's not for lack of going for it.
Lastly, and I don't mean to put 25 egos into your mind here for a second, or 26, I should say,
but if you're Joe Espada
and your team has scored two runs
and a handful of games,
nearly got perfect game the other night against Baltimore.
You're seeing that same guy tonight, as a matter of fact.
What is the clubhouse tenor?
I know it has been so even keeled for about a decade,
even when things haven't been great,
because there have been some down spots.
There always isn't a 162 game schedule.
But this feels, I don't know if the word tense.
I know there was a player conversation that took place
that Carlos Correa did that say a couple things here.
and there. How does Joe manage this when it's not necessarily about guys not performing up to
expectations? There may be a few in the mix, but it's also a lot of guys that are like, man, we just
need some help. And whether it's coming through pitching and injuries and getting guys back,
whether it's Jordan, and that's a lot of pressure on him, how does Joe handle the tough love
versus August dog days versus if I start screaming and yelling and throwing water, gatorade bottles
and whatnot, I might lose my clubhouse and we're still a game and a half in front of everybody.
else in American League West.
Yeah, it's certainly not about screaming and yelling.
You know, that's not going to move the needle with guys.
You know, what you do want to do is express and create the sense of urgency,
which is already going to be there with a lot of guys who have been through, you know,
stretch runs and playoff hunts.
But just kind of say, hey, guys, you know, we know that over the course of a season,
you've worked your way out of slumps, but this is kind of, you know,
we don't have the luxury of time on our hands right now.
We've got to push a little bit harder and just not even from a physical standpoint of working harder or doing more,
but just we need that focus to be there every day and kind of lock in like we would if this were the last series of the season
in our playoff hopes we're riding on it.
Just kind of create that sense of urgency now and hopefully you can kind of things can click and you snap out of it
and then carry that through the rest of the season.
great stuff as always friend

I don't know how you guys feel about computer models,
but the athletic had a computer model put together the Texans wins and losses for 2025.
I want to read to you what one person that writes for that publication says about what he expects from the Astros or from the Texans this season.
We'll go through that and then at the bottom of the hour,
we're going to ask you and ask you to call in and tell some people to shut their bumasses up.
and I'm going after a national food chain.
Matt with you today, Ross is off for a little few days.
He's going camping.
He got in his car and he drove to Austin yesterday,
and now he's going to West Texas by himself.
Man, you know what?
And I know I'm Mr. Texas.
I know you guys know that.
I think I'm missing out on something about camping,
but that's his number one jam.
See, to me, roughing it, Jonathan,
is not having room service available at a hotel.
You know, I'm going to agree with doing this.
I'm just not a camp guy.
I don't think I ever would just go out there and just chill out, you know?
You know what would scare me?
It wouldn't be necessarily sleeping in a sleeping bag or an air mattress.
It would be like setting up my camp, my tent, and having, like, critters getting within five feet of me.
Like the bugs and all that stuff?
Bugs, Armadillos, Raccoons.
I can't stand getting bit by mosquitoes.
That just drives me nuts.
I would already...
I would think so.
Does there anybody that likes to get big by mosquito?
I don't think so.
I'm a real, like, I'm a real, I'm just a whiny body.
I just hate it.
I don't know why.
You know what?
You're more like me, and I appreciate that.
Yeah, I, yeah, I was, mosquito biting.
Is that the old red ants getting on your body and not one of my two favorite things?
So, hopefully he does not get attacked by any sort of lions or bears or tigers or critters of any sort.
Wolves.
They're all out there.
He likes that stuff, but, you know, everybody has their own, have to have their own form of relaxation.
713212-1257-9 again we got to shut your ball myself but ain't nobody got time for that coming up in just a few minutes here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross so congratulations to Derek Rose we'll have his number one jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls that's going to be our theme of today's edition I believe we're not not Derek Rose but Googled things about retired jerseys so we'll have it for you today at 150.
I'm not a big computer generator guy,
but sometimes it's interesting to at least bring it up for you,
which I'm going to do for you here.
There is, you know, the athletic is that pay journalism service,
which I think is fantastic.
The writers are really good.
It doesn't necessarily give you the how something happened,
but why things happen.
You know, like Channel Rome doesn't write a story.
Astros lost the Tigers, this, this, here's how it happened.
He kind of gives you the behind-the-scenes stuff.
And while the Chronicle and the MLB folks do a great job and a variety of sports,
I like the behind-the-scenes stuff.
And that's why I'm a big fan of the athletic.
Well, a guy by the name of Austin Mock ran computer modules of all the NFL win totals in 2025 in the NFL.
He uses statistical models and simulations to predict how teams are going to do.
He simulates the season 100,000 times to see how many games a team is expected to win,
how often the team makes the playoffs and the likelihood of that winning the division and the Super Bowl.
Oh, that's kind of cool.
So I thought, you know what, the guy's doing his work, his due diligence.
I'll at least give it a read and maybe bring a couple of things up.
What I did, and I was surprised by, was the following.
He has, his computer module, has the bills winning 11.2 games, which obviously you don't.
so it's a little between 11 and 12.
He has the Ravens winning 11.
He has the Chiefs winning 10.9, which if you're going to round up is 11.
He has the Bengals winning 10.
He has the Broncos winning 9.2.
He has the Texans at 8.8, which again, if we're going to round up,
that says in 9 and 8 season.
His computer module says the Texans have a 53.4% chance of making the playoffs.
at a 2.5% chance of making the Super Bowl or winning it.
Now, this projection model takes into account,
let's see, various metrics,
simulates each game of the regular season in playoffs
until a Super Bowl champion emerges.
That process is repeated 100,000 times
to, again, provide a realistic measure
of how likely a team is to make the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
So, computers aren't everything.
They are just one metric,
but this computer has the Texans at 8.8 wins,
below the Broncos at 9.2,
and just in front of the Chargers at 8.5
and the Steelers at 8.7.
Now, this reporter for the Athletics says the following about the AFC South.
The division should produce one of the tightest races in the NFL,
with some intriguing teams, but no true super.
Bowl contender.
Right now, my model doesn't project any team in the South to win nine games.
The Houston Texans have won back-to-back division crowns with 10 win seasons,
while the Jaxars won three years ago with nine.
Part of the reason for the imparity in this division is the inconsistency and uncertainty at the
quarterback from top to bottom.
Hmm.
I don't know if I completely agree with that.
I don't think there is inconsistency.
with C.J. Stroud, I think he's just got to be better.
One really
awesome rookie campaign,
a so-so second season, but now
I don't think a lot of it on his fault. He does
bear some responsibility, but not all
of it on him.
The writer goes on to say, the division race
will likely hinge on whether C.J. Stroud can
play more like he did as a rookie before his sophomore
campaign. A new
offensive coordinator and some positive
aggression should mean Stroud
improves upon last year. However,
if Houston struggles again,
Jacksonville seems prime to take over.
Trevor Lawrence has also been inconsistent during his young career,
but playing for a new coach should do wonders for his efficiency.
My model gives Houston a 45% chance to win the division while Jacksonville lands at 26.
So 71% of the computer model says either Houston or Jacksonville wins.
The other 29 would be the Colts with Daniel Jones.
no thanks or the Tennessee
Titans in full rebuild mode
don't be surprised that those
two teams meaning Tennessee and
Annapolis are quote unquote
contending for top 10 picks
again
it's just
computer module but again the computer
got ran 100,000 times so it's
he didn't put it into an algorithm and say won't run it once
so it makes my predictions look better
I don't necessarily think it's even food for thought but it's just
something that I wanted to bring it.
up to you. Because I will say this, and I've not looked at everybody's season projections, but it feels
like to me the common number is the Texans are going to win 10 games and lose 7. And that should
be plenty good to win the AFC South unless Jacksonville has all, unless Trevor Lawrence
has his best season. And every year, I think the NFL is looking for Trevor Lawrence to have
his best season, but yet he just can't seem to pull it off.
For being a quote-unquote franchise 1-1,
hard to believe this guy isn't already in the Hall of Fame quarterback,
Trevor Lawrence has been a major disappointment to me.
And we see him twice a year,
and he's had a couple of nice runs.
But the guy overthrows guys, he's inconsistent,
he doesn't have great pocket awareness.
for this being a unbelievable, remember how everyone in their mother had him as the number one pick before the season even started, and thus he was?
He's just been mid.
And the Texans are lucky to have a quarterback situation in their division that has a true rookie in a reclamation project in Tennessee to a hot mess in Indianapolis to an underperforming overall number one pick.
So if you are a diehard Texans fan or really is a decent Texans fan,
you've got to be thinking, man, thank God the Texans are in the AFC South,
because 10 and 7 is going to be good enough to win this division.
AFC West, it may not be.
AFC East, you never know.
AFC North, very competitive.
The problem is 10 and 7 just isn't going to get you a home field advantage for more than one round of the playoff.
It's going to probably put you in either Baltimore, Buffalo, or a candy,
the city for week number two, and we've been there and done that way too many times
those teams we just discussed.
So again, the athletics says eight, what I would I say give me the number here just to make
sure.
The Tennessee, the athletics computer module says the Texans are going to win 8.8 games this
year and a 53% to make the playoffs and a 2.5% chance to reach the Super Bowl.
All right.
Time for us to tell some people to share.
shut their bum asses up. Let's go.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
We're taking it until noon with the news at noon.
We've got Adam Amin's going to call tonight's Astros' Orioles game.
He'll be with us in one hour from Fox Sports and from Baltimore.
And we've got Dr. Roto to lead things off for us.
In his season premiere, he'll be with us at 1 o'clock this afternoon.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
If somebody's pissing you off, Tomliss, shut their bum-asses up.
713-212-5-7-90.
It is 1129 here on Sports Talk 7-9.
All right, here we go.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
You're mad about something somebody said, somebody did to you?
The next half hour is your cathartic time to call 7-1-3-212-5-7-90
and tell them to shut their bum-ass up, mate.
Shut your bum-ass up, man.
Or if someone is telling you about their gout,
or someone is telling you about they have gone to five doctors in five days i'm so tired
you're like i hope you feel better but ain't nobody got time to hear about your daily physical
physician plan ain't nobody got time for that so i'm at the office sitting in front of the
copy machine telling you about how they got to do this and they got to do that and they got
ain't anybody got time for that let's get into copy machine let's get our copies and let's get
out of there jonathan i got two to start with i'm going to let you go and then we're
We're going to let the audience go.
713, 212, 5, 7.90.
One is a sports take.
One is not.
Rackerel.
I know what you're going to say.
You are changing the logo for no apparent reason.
You are changing the insides of your restaurant because you're trying to be cool and hip.
I'm sorry.
We go to rackererrero for your eggs.
your hash brown casserole, your bacon,
and to play that game with golf teas,
and to go to the country store to buy gum and candy,
and to buy little miniature license plates with our kids' names on them.
We don't go because we're hipsters.
You changing your logo is ridiculous.
You changing the insides of rack or rail.
You're a country store who serves awesome pancakes.
Awesome pancakes.
Awesome.
Some pancakes.
Chicken fried steak.
Even the burgers are not bad.
Rackerel.
What the hell are you doing?
Your stock prices have dropped 12% in one day.
Ain't nobody got time for you changing up what's already working.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
And to get rid of that old dude on the crack on the rackerel logo, shit your bum ass up, mate.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
Rackerel.
Seriously.
Oh, yeah, that's so much.
Come on.
So much backlash on it right now.
So my, why are people doing it?
All right.
Number two.
Dennis Schrooter.
Former part-time rocket.
Commissertile dude, actually.
Jonathan, he says he'll never be loved as much as Dirt Navitsky in Germany because of his dark skin.
When I was 14, I sat in front of a TV watching Dirt Navitsky.
carry the flag of the 2008 summer
games in Beijing. Back then
I thought, how cool, there's no greater honor.
It's a greater honor. But for
me, it'll never be the same for as Dirk.
I will never receive the same love
in this country because I'm dark skin.
Dennis,
Shrewd's! You are not
even close to the same player as
Dirt Novitsky. I don't care
if you are green colored or orange
or you are musty white.
You're not as good as Dirk.
Dennis Shrewder.
your bum ass up, man.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
That's...
I mean, you gotta be kidding me.
If you were as good as Dirt Nivinsky, they would love on you.
You're just not and you never will be.
Period of the story.
Shut your bum ass up.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
Just can't...
Man, there are some people in this world.
Woo!
Yeah, you're not gonna get the same love.
Dirt,
Naviski is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
The greatest player probably coming out of Germany.
You're not.
It's Derek, man.
Dirk.
Suck it. Seriously.
What is wrong with you?
That rackerel logo, too.
Oh, my God.
I mean, just let us go eat our two eggs scramble with ham mixed in with cheddar cheese and call it a day.
Those cinnamon apples hit hard, too, by the way.
Making me hungry.
Who?
Jonathan, what's the matter with you?
Matt, I don't know.
if you've seen on your 4U tab or
4U tabs and everything. I have.
But everything that I've been getting the last couple of days has been about this
37 U football league
where these
gotta be like they're a grown man. I saw one right now
a 60 year old like went into school play playing straight
tackle football by the way.
Barely any refs hitting them
dog mess out of each other. Like I'm saying
like full Ray Lewis everything like getting CTE on there
and the dude, the old man, Taurus. TORES.
ACL the first play and I keep seeing this.
Ain't nobody got time for this.
Ain't nobody got time for this.
You're just getting hurt.
Half y'all probably don't have insurance.
And you're taking your life away.
You're probably like 50, 45.
If anybody's doing that, listen to it.
Come on.
Health is wealth, guys.
Come on.
Yeah, health is well.
And nobody's 60 years old for you playing tackle football.
Oh, my, Jonathan, ironically, my 4U tab doesn't have that.
Oh, put it.
When you see it, oh, oh, oh, oh, different.
We know that.
We know.
We know.
It's all I'm so.
I got a lot of wrestling on my
for you tab.
Right, right, with bikinis too, huh?
I cannot confirm nor to 9.
713-212-5-7-90.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Ain't nobody got time for something?
You tell us.
You want to tell by somebody to shut their bum-asses up?
You know where to find us.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Kenneth on 790.
Kenneth, what's the matter with you?
Yeah, I don't want to.
Nobody to take this as a whole, that distrust, man.
But this is a Cowboys fan and Jerry Jones kind of thing, man,
because every year it's like Groundhouse day over and over with how to see them go.
And I just had to ask one of them this morning, man.
Do you really believe that they got a chance this year to make the Super Bowl?
He said, yes.
And see, I started to just tell them, man.
Y'all like a cult now with your leader of Jerry Jones.
It's like the evangelistic guy that put shame to,
Jimmy Swagger
and I like to tell all of y'all, man,
it's hopeless.
And shut the bum ass up.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
You heard him.
Jonathan, are Cowboy fans and Aggie fans
of the same cloth?
Yes, yes.
Someone grew up with DFW, I can tell you right now.
Those Cowboys fans, every time.
They really do think they're going to win the Super Bowl.
Every year.
Every year.
It was zero hesitation.
Jerry Jones might go down as one of the worst.
executives football-wise in the history of sports because no other general manager would be able
to keep his job as long as he has although he's the one that can fire himself there's no board
of directors he has to answer to he doesn't answer to his son he is the boss that the greatest
sports marketing's greatest sports business person in the history oh i say he's yeah he makes
a ton of money over there jerry for sure sports business wise he's number one on the list
as a football acumen general manager maybe one of the worst ever should have been fired
I don't know, 15, 16 years ago?
Let's talk to Allen on 790.
Allen in 1142.
Alan, what's the matter with you?
Hey, I've just been laughing my butt off at you guys today.
The racker rail thing is awesome.
So I have to go along with the same thing.
I must listen to this station too much.
I've got all this nice sound gear in my car and good music,
and I listen to 790 all the time.
I'm so sick of that Wendy's advertisement with that lame ass,
whatever it is.
Hey, me, I do it.
Please, do another one.
Please, shut up.
Do another ad.
Second,
why are people still booing pickoff moves in 2025?
It is so.
Nobody got time for that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm right there with you.
By the way, I do like...
Set your rum-ass up, man.
That, uh, what do they call that thing?
A double stack.
That hits okay.
I'm not a fan of Wendy's.
What?
I'm just not a fan.
Frosty maybe, but
even then.
But the frosty, you got to let it melt for a while.
You've got to get a spoon.
You can't drink it like as a shake.
They do have the good.
The lemonade's good.
The spicy chicken is good.
Again, that double stack hits properly.
I got it again.
But, and then, yeah, you don't need to pay.
He's, Alan is exactly right.
Why y'all booing pickoff moves?
You can do it twice.
If you do it a third time, you better get the guy out,
or he gets the free base.
So baseball fans, stop booing.
Ain't anybody got time for you booing pickoff moves?
Ain't nobody got time for that?
Exactly.
All right, here's the rule, ladies and gentlemen.
Brad is going to be on the line.
He wants to tell people to start their bumasses up.
Now, you know, if Brad is on hold,
we don't take them unless there's nobody else on the screen.
So if there's somebody else,
that's something you want to get off your chest,
let it be heard.
It's 713-21-2-5-6.
790.
713-212-5-7-90.
Ain't nobody got time for something.
You tell us.
If you want to tell somebody to shut their bum-asses up, come on in.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
7-13-21-2-5-79.
Remember, Brad's online.
You get in front of him, and if nobody calls, we go to Brad next.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Ain't anybody got time for that and shut your bum-ass up
We need you right now.
713212.125, 790.
This will make you feel much better as you work your way through a Thursday.
Adam Amin calling tonight's Astros Orioles game.
We'll with us from Fox in about 40 minutes here on 790.
Let's go to Parker on 790.
Parker, what's the matter with you?
Matt, how are you doing today?
Amazing.
I have a question.
So saying Yordon comes back here in the next week,
how is our everyday lineup going to look with us adding Sanchez playing left?
Is Al-Tube going to go back to everyday second base?
Or is Alvarez going to get playing time in the outfield?
Or is he just going to be a designated hitter?
Parker, what's the name of this segment?
Bumass or something, but I can't see Jacob Melton's bum-ass playing center field
every single day.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
Parker, I'll answer your question in just a few minutes.
Parker, we love you.
Thank you very much.
But asking you a legit question during this segment of the show,
shut your bum ass up, man.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Love you, though, Parker.
And we will do a deep dive into the Astros lineup
once Yoron comes back.
Let's go to Philippe.
on 790. Felipe, what's the matter with you?
Well, first of all, Parker,
shut your bum ass up, man.
Second of all, for the actual best,
ain't nobody got time for y'all not to be hitting balls,
not getting runs.
It's hard to be a national star right now, but we are here.
What I really want to talk about is
you mentioned that people are booing the pickoff.
Y'all booed the pickoff,
but y'all will not booing when people
still do the wave.
Ban the wave.
For the people that still do the wave,
man, shit your bum asses up, man.
All of y'all that do the way.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
By the way, if you want to join you.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
The Twitter account is at WaveBusters, H-O-U.
Wave Busters, H-O-U.
If you would like to follow the phenomenon,
the frenzy that is.
Is that your burner?
That's my burner, yes.
Is it actually you?
But, I mean,
I don't know.
I have one burner.
Hey, I keep sitting.
I didn't know.
Hey, Jonathan, shut your bum ass up, mate.
Jeez.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Thank you.
713, 212, 5, 790.
James Incline.
James, what's the matter with you?
Yeah, when I call this show, I call this show
to hopefully get some insight.
And I don't need Ross telling me
that I need to Google it first,
or that I don't know the analytics of who's hitting.
when some guy goes 0 for 24, and I call up and say, why would you pinch hit for this guy?
And he goes, well, you don't know the analytics.
So, Ross, shut your bum ass up.
There you go.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
Always welcome to tell Ross to shut his bum ass up.
That's good.
All right, let's set the lineup for you here at 1153.
Our good friend, Yankee lover, James and Garden Oaks is in the line.
Then it's Brad.
Need I say more?
713-212-5-0.
790, 713, 212, 5790.
You want to call in, you will have carte blanche.
James and Garden Oaks on 790. James, what's the matter with you?
Well, thank you, Governor for taking my call and everybody else.
I hope he's having a good trip and everything because he's hard at work.
Now, I'm going to get right to it.
The people that was calling that day and calling the RV show and talking about the
They know baseball, and you could be a fanatic fan, but you don't know baseball.
First of all, all of that talk was unnecessary to that guy.
You were making them getting all nervous and agitated before his vacation time.
And also to them dumb-ass people over there in box sports, especially Jason Smith and his magpie sidekick talking play-by-play about the demise of the Yankees.
Well, look at the picture now, buddy.
Your messes are just barely hanging in by a threat.
And the Yankees, as always, they're thriving.
and surviving.
Okay?
And thank you, Governor, for taking my quote.
All those people got to shut their bum ass up.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Whoof.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
You know the Yankees have hit 14 home runs in the last two games?
I mean, dang.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Steve is with us.
Steve, what's the matter with you?
Man, nothing, because that's the shortest wait time I ever had on the call in on the show.
Well, the reason for that is because we took you over Brad.
We would have normally gone to Brad.
Okay.
We'd take you in front of Brad.
Well, I almost didn't want to call in because I'm curious about this Brad dude, you know.
I'd like to hear what he has to say now.
Well, guess what?
You're going to hear him.
He's a friend of the show.
Okay.
Well, I need your help with something.
There's a guy who does a segment on 790 that's kind of pro-aggy.
Aggie oriented. I don't know who the guy is. Who is that guy? Pro Aggie. I don't know who you're
talking about. Yeah, there was some guy, it was kind of, it was in the evening, maybe around
seven at night. I don't remember if it was weekday or weekend, but he was talking about how
A&M may have one of the best rushing attacks in the country this year. I'm like, well, wait a second.
So I called the guy and I said, you know, who led the SEC in rushing last year?
individual. Trey Wisner.
Trey Wisner's back.
C.J. Baxter's back.
That's running back in his recruiting
class. Christian Clark, the true
pressure from last year's back from injury,
and we still got Trey Wisner. And oh, by the
way, our
back is too without being
Longmore and trying to.
Aggie, dude, shut your bum
ass up. We've got the Washington attack.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Thank you, Steve. That was kind of long-winded, but again,
remember, you got in over Brad. So,
You have that for you.
713-212-5-790.
Thanks, Steve.
Rick on 790.
Rick, what's the matter with you?
Good afternoon.
Well, almost good afternoon, Matt.
You'll hear to delay a little bit of Matt,
a bad, shining moment of the week.
So I got a couple such a bumer you left for you.
So, first one, let's go with whoever.
Actually, they are.
Rick, we're going to let you go because your phone line's terrible.
I don't know if you have like a pillow over your speaker part of it, but it's terrible.
We love you, but we're going to go and take it as an L.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
We weren't going to tell you to shut your bum ass up, but your phone did.
And we have terrible phone lines here, so I know it can be our fault sometimes, but not that case.
Tim and Galveston, Tim, what's the matter with you?
What's the matter with me?
Man, I'm sitting down here on the Gulf Coast.
Galveston looking at this beautiful water.
And you know what?
I want to say to Charles Barkley, you need to shut your bum ass up.
Shut your bum ass up, man.
Beautiful weeks.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
That's it.
That's it.
Thank you, Tim.
I love Galveston, too.
You know why?
Mr. Texas loves all the state.
and I love Gabbison.
Shout out to you.
Love you down on the 409.
Let's go to Roger on 790.
Roger, what's the matter with you?
Well, everything's Frumber.
Yeah, whatever he's got to say for himself about the last few starts lately,
shut his bum ass up.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Framber hate real.
I get it.
Bonnie Joe, my friend, on 790.
Bonnie, what's the matter?
with you? Hey, hey. Yeah, so I'm a huge Cowboys fan and I get tired of all these people who hate the
Cowboys that think that we think, as Cowboy fans, we're going back to the Super Bowl every year.
Most of us that are real Cowboy fans know that until Jerry Jones is gone, we have no chance
of going to the Super Bowl. So I tell all those Cowboy fan haters that shut their bum ass up.
Shit your bum ass up, man.
Bonnie, let's go get some hash brown casserole,
once they get the act together.
All right, last but not least,
our buddy Brad is with us at 1159.
Brad, what's the matter with you?
Shout out to James and Garden House,
but I want to ask you something real quick, Matt.
How do you think you compare yourself to Jody Mac?
I think he's like the best talk shows, sports host of all time.
How do you think you compare yourself?
and then I'll do my shout-out.
My shout-out, what's the matter with me?
You know, your sidekick Ross has treated me like crap
since that one incident at one of your,
I don't remember what it was,
but he don't let me come in on the 10th inning shows.
He blocks me, but when you're there, he backs off,
but he still talks to smack.
He's a very negative guy.
He will never get his own show.
until he takes his negativity.
I have never done anything wrong to the man,
but I want to just call in and tell you,
shut your bum ass up, Ross.
Shit your bum ass.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Next drastic measures here on the Matt Thomas show
with Ross to be able to play a Taylor Swift song
when it comes to the Astros.
But yes, the Astros,
must shake it off because their lead in the American League.
West still is at one and a half games.
It is our number three of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Ross with a few days off.
I'm Matt with you until 2 o'clock today.
Adam Amine from Fox Sports.
He will be with us coming up at 1230.
He'll be on the call.
Tonight's game for the Astros against the Orioles.
At 1 o'clock, it is the season debut of Dr. Roto.
Did Ross give you Dr. Roto's intro music, by the way?
Jonathan.
What's going on?
Did you find the intro music for Dr. Roto?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I got ready for one.
I'm excited, man.
That's just music to one man's ears right there.
So we've got that for you coming up in about 50 minutes from now.
All right, time now at 12.8 for the news at noon.
All right, Astros are going to try to snap this losing skid after losing the three games in Detroit.
And you'll have Astros.
Baseball on deck will be at 5 o'clock today.
And in the pitching matchup, Brandon Young, who nearly perfect game,
the Astros last time around, we'll go against Jason Alexander.
The Astros are at 69 and 58.
Still with that game and a half lead in the American League West,
the Astros have lost four in a row.
The Mariners have dropped five in a row.
And by the way, good shout out to UCJ Stroud.
Since touring that Seattle cap on Saturday before the game against the Panthers,
the Mariners have not won a game.
Texas, by the way, losing the last night is,
actually they beat Kansas City last night there within six and a half of the Astros in the American League West.
They brought this up.
The Yankees have hit 14 home runs in the last two games,
beat again Tampa last night in Tampa.
They're starting to move up the slate when it comes to being the number one walk card.
Toronto still holds the advantage in the American League East.
Other news, Texans are on the practice field.
today in Detroit.
They're playing in a organized team workout with the Lions.
They'll have a rest day tomorrow, and then they'll close out the regular season on Saturday
with a game against the Detroit Lions.
I will not expect any of the mainstay starters to get much, if any, a playing time,
and that would include C.J. Stroud.
Josh Allen's going to set out the entire preseason for the first time.
Buffalo Bills announced that he will not play in a third preseason game,
and Lamar Jackson was out of our practice today.
leaving practice a day early and did not practice today.
Again, the thought of him probably playing in the final preseason game is little or nothing at all.
And as far as one more thing on the Houston Texans are concerned,
if you've got a Jimmy Warren jersey, you might want to get rid of it.
He has been sued by the woman.
He allegedly assaulted.
A lawsuit filed in Harris County District Court yesterday saying,
quote, she was violently assaulted multiple times sexually and physically by Ward,
including the presence of their three-year-old son.
son. She is seeking more than $20 million damages. Her attorney is Tony Busby.
Uh-oh.
I will refrain from any comment on that, but again, Jimmy Ward now facing a $20 million
domestic violence civil suit.
And that, my friends, is the news at news.
All right, 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Are you...
amazed, dismayed, is it incredulous to you?
The Astros have a one and a half game lead.
For as bad as things have gone for the Astros,
for the way that Fromber gave up five runs in the first inning,
had took him forever to record it out,
for the Astros' offense to do nothing in Detroit
except for that two-run home run for Maricio Dubon yesterday.
It has been a lack of offense at the very least.
And you're saying to yourself,
Well, at least the softer part of the schedule is coming up.
And in theory it is.
Think about this gang.
Four with Baltimore.
Three with Colorado.
Three with the Angels.
If there's any time for the Astros,
even with the dogged days of summer,
even though they're still missing out on their favorite power slugging hitter
and Gordon Alvarez is supposed to play again today for Corpus Christi.
This would be the time,
because here's the reality of it.
The Astros actually.
After today, or we mentioned the series coming up,
the Mariners, meanwhile, tomorrow start a three-game series at home against the Aves who suck.
That's problem number one.
After that, though, the Astros will watch the Mariners play the San Diego Padres in Seattle.
Now, Seattle's really good at home, but the Padres are winning the American League West.
And then after that, the Mariners will have a lot.
another series coming up to wrap up their home series and they will be on the road at
Cleveland.
Actually, they're going to go on the road.
So this has to be the time because if the Astros can't expand their lead more than what
it is right now in a game and a half, how the hell they're going to hold on it in September
when you've got the Yankees and the Rangers in Seattle coming up.
This has to be, as I like to say, the fat and happy time for the local nine.
Four with Baltimore, three with Colorado, three with the Angels.
that the Astros cannot expand their lead or at any point to lose it.
It's going to be a very dicey month of September
in a very unsettled Houston fan base
because I can already tell you've been very unsettled
with the way the team has played and for obviously of good reasons.
1213 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We'll take some more phone calls and we'll talk to Adam Amina Fox Sports
at the bottom of the hour with Dr. Roto at 1 o'clock here on Sports Talk 790.
713-213-2-5-790.
13212-5-790.
If you want to jump into the conversation,
Adam Amin's going to join the program coming up in just a little bit.
Adam Amin is the talented broadcaster of the Fox game of the week,
and he will be with us to discuss things because he's going to call the Astros game against the Orioles tonight,
which you'll see on Channel 26 locally.
Of course, the radio call right here on Sports Talk 790.
So again, looking forward to Adam Ameen joining as Adams.
does NFL on Fox and we'll be doing
Chicago Bulls games again on TV for their
regional TV network. 713212-5-790.
Stunner is at 1221.
Stunner, what do you got today?
What's going on, Matt?
Hi.
Hey, man.
We got to get us a slump buster, man.
You know, we got to get us a slum buster.
All right.
Stop what you're doing right there.
Hold up, hold up.
Because everybody knows what's a slump, slump.
slump buster is. I would like for you, stun it, because you're a responsible man in the streets of
Houston. Give us two or three candidates for slump busting. What do you got?
That's one in my book. Who is that again? I'm losing to the audio.
Yeah. I'm losing you a little bit. Are you there? Okay. I make sure you're there.
Yeah. Okay. Tell me again, who's your slump buster? What is going on? I don't know. I think he's
getting in and out there.
All right.
All right, we're going to let you go because it sounds like we're losing the connection there.
Poor Stunna.
Do you know what a slumpbuster is, Jonathan?
No, what is it?
Mark Grace was a former first baseman for the Cubs and the Diamondbacks.
Way back in the day, said when you're on a long losing streak or you haven't had a lot of hits or something,
you should just go find a rando to have relations with.
a K.A. a slumpbuster.
Like to relieve yourself?
To, yeah, to release the tension.
That's like that movie, Durham, that baseball movie?
Bull Durham, you mean?
Yeah, Bull Durham, you mean? Yeah, it's kind of like that, huh?
I mean, sort of.
But see, the problem is Susan Surrandon's character.
She found one guy every year, and she hooked up with him.
That's right, that's right.
He wasn't necessarily going for a slump.
He just, he wanted to find a cougar, and he got one.
I'm trying to think, what is, yeah, I don't mean to get too blue on the audience here a little bit,
but I think you know.
Yeah.
How do I explain this to my young friend?
I'll do it this way.
Let's just say you had a long-term relationship with a girl, and you broke up,
and you're really downtrodden and you're sad and you're depressed.
And you just want to, how do I say this?
You want to get back in the game a little bit.
You want to get back in the game just a little bit.
So that's what you do.
You don't necessarily aren't looking for a relationship.
You're not looking for a 10.
It'll be satisfied with a three or four.
Now, I know somebody that's going to be here to help me with this.
This is a man who's gotten a few slump busters in his day.
Hi, Brian.
You're on 790.
Good afternoon.
Hey, Matt.
Hey, Jonathan, long-time caller, or longtime listener, first-time caller, how we doing today?
Lyer, you called several times.
Shut up.
Hey, look, you said slumpbusters are a rando.
That's partially true.
Uh-oh.
But if you really want to go get out of your slump, you got to go get a big one.
A big slump buster, if you know what I mean?
Well, you know what I thought you were going to say, Brian, is you were going to call an old girlfriend of yours.
That's what I thought you were going to say.
No, that'll put you in a worse slump.
No, absolutely not. You don't call your ex.
You go find yourself a big, a fit girl, if you will, respectfully.
And if you really want that, there's a couple good spots on the north side for those.
No free pub on the Matt Thomas show with Ross, though.
Not at all. You got that right.
Yeah, there's a country bar on the north side.
You can find you a couple of slumpbusters on a Wednesday night or maybe a Saturday night.
I don't know. Can't confirm nor deny that I've ever been there, but no free pub.
Let's make this about your friend and not about you, because, Brian, you are a man about the town,
and you have friends that have had issues before, and you're looking for that slump busting.
So we're just saying thick, right?
We're not necessarily fat, correct?
Just thick.
You know, if you really want to, if you're struggling or if you're, let's say, you know,
left in a picture for the Astros, I'm not going to say any names from or Valdez.
You go get you a fat girl.
Yeah.
Do you really want to get that slump?
You go get you a big one.
All right.
Thank you, Brian.
And tell all your friends on Facebook we send our best.
Let's do us all a favor and stop posting our first day of school pictures when your little Johnny's going into third grade.
Thank you.
He's messed up for that.
He's messed up.
Gil, what can we do for you today, Gil?
Thank you for calling.
He stole my thunder.
I was going to say, as Charles Barkley would say, go to San Antonio and get you a little.
big one.
You know, they got some big
big girls over there. So if you want to get out
that slump, he stole my
thunder. All right.
So apparently there's a
North Houston country bar and
the entire Santa City of San Antonio
could help you with that. All right, that seems fair.
Before we get to
Adam Amin, Joe is with us at
1226. Hi, Joe.
Hey, we're from Sunbusters
to fat chicks real quick.
I love it. Yeah, that's good.
Hey, so I know it's tough watching this Astros team right now, man, you know, but I still appreciate
you. You know how hard it's got to be to be a Seattle Mariners fan?
Oh, no, no doubt.
Not make the playoffs for 20 years, and they do, then he gets swept by the Astros,
and they almost catch us last year, and they don't.
And then this time, they can't even get out of their own way, and we're like efficiently
bad, so I also appreciate for what we have.
I want better baseball here because it's spoiled, but, you know, so happy with what we
got here.
But I appreciate you guys.
Great Joe.
Amen, Joe.
Joe, thanks for the phone call.
Yeah, remember everybody as bad as things have been.
Your squad is still a game and a half in front.
Let's talk to our friend Adam Amin of Fox Sports.
He's on the call tonight's Astros Orioles game.
You'll hear from him next, 1227 on Sports Talk 790.
A very underrated sports theme for a television network.
It's baseball night in America.
And tonight on Channel 26,
you will see one of the nation's finest broadcasters.
Now, he does primarily NFC games
because he works for Fox on the NFL Sunday.
But when he ever does a Texan's game,
Adam Amin's going to be with us for like two hours in the show.
Adam, how the hell are you?
I'm very much looking forward to finally doing a Texan's game
and getting to sit down with you for two hours.
I know. I cannot weigh.
You are the television voice of the Chicago Bulls.
You are on baseball night in America tonight for the Astros against the Orioles.
And, of course, every Sunday you can see them on Fox NFL Sunday.
Adam, I got to be honest with you, you're running into a game.
If you saw this game on your schedule back in April, you're probably thinking, okay,
Astros Orioles might be a potential ALCS matchup down the road.
Orioles have fired everybody.
They've traded off players.
They're playing okay since they're terrible first two months.
Meanwhile, the Astros don't score runs anymore.
So kind of a not what you thought was.
going to be matchup when you first got your schedule.
Yeah, I didn't think we would run
into the Astros in a week
where they've scored, what, 12 runs and have given up
more than 50. I did not think that that was
going to be the case, but I also didn't think
this would be an Astros team that would have Carlos
Correa, and I could go back into my 20-23
notes to learn, you know, remember everything
I had about him the last time we saw
Correa when he was playing for the twins.
So it's a very
different looking Astros team
that I was expecting. It is a
significantly different Baltimore team that I was
expecting. I don't know what to think about the Orioles, but I still feel very, everybody we run into
during our travels who talk about the Astros, it's the old model of consistency. And this is one
of those rare times that I've hopped into Houston, into a Houston game and thought,
this is not like the Astros I'm used to seeing. So yeah, in April, this is not what I would have
expected to be seeing, but it's got weight to it, right? This is a game that's got some impact
to it for Houston, obviously.
Yeah, with the game and a half late, game lead, especially with Seattle not winning any games as well.
So that's been a good sign.
Let me ask you this from a national perspective because you do get a chance to do different, call different games.
And one of the complaints from my audience is when an ESPN or an Apple will come in is that the cheating scandal comes into play almost every single national broadcast.
And there is a fair amount of resentment for it.
Not that the city of Houston, Adam, knows what the asteros did.
but it's almost like a situation of
how many times are we going to hear this?
And I don't think you would ever intentionally do it,
but I just think when someone comes in
and doesn't see a team a whole lot,
it's a narrative that comes into play.
What is your general thought
now that we are eight years removed from that?
And does that ever get up in conversations
when you're sitting down in a production meeting saying,
hey, do we bring up Kareas yesterday years?
Do we bring up the fact that L.A.L.T.O.E.
still gets boot everywhere he goes and plays.
I think that's the reason
behind it is the booing because
it's impossible not to associate
those things, right? And I think
for most audiences, again, we
are calling games for a national audience
which means essentially we're calling them for
both sides. Imagine
if, you know, I get
to imagine this because I'm the local guy for
a team in the NBA as you mentioned.
So I hear it on the rare occasions
and those occasions are rarer
and rarer for the Chicago Bulls
to be on national TV. But
I think the occasions
where the Bulls are on national TV.
You know, we get tweets.
Stacey King and I, my partner,
who are like, oh, these guys don't know this about this team,
or they're always talking about the other team,
or they're biased.
I'm like, no, that's Dave Pash.
He's a good friend of mine who's really good at his job
and called me two days ago to ask me about the Bulls.
Like, he knows what he's doing.
He knows what he's talking about.
I think it's little things that start to connect.
And I understand where a local audience would get frustrated by it,
but if you're calling games for the national side,
and suddenly you're hearing fans boo Jose Altuve,
it's impossible not to mention it because it's coming through on your TV.
And if we've learned anything on the national TV side,
I think baseball is an exception to this in a lot of ways, not fully,
but it is an exception in a lot of ways.
Most sports that we cover nationally,
fans don't know much about the teams.
And I want to believe that fans know so much more than they ever have,
and that's true.
but it's only a certain percentage of fans.
Most people that are tuning in and flipping through their channels
and landing on a Fox baseball game or a ESPN NBA game
or whatever it may be,
whatever the case ends up being a Fox NFL game,
like we're really introducing a lot of things to fans
who are watching this casually.
So I think that's why the natural tendency
is to just explain the most basic concept.
But I have been in production meetings.
We covered the Astros a couple of years ago in the playoffs
against Minnesota in that series.
And I remember saying, like,
I don't really feel like we got to talk about it.
It's not going to be a subject.
And I think the only time we mentioned it
is when the Astros were about to clinch the series.
I think it was like the seventh inning or something like that.
And it's like, you know, just as kind of a roller coaster of the last
at that point six or seven years.
I think now, like, it is further and further away.
But I went to a Toronto White Sox game earlier this year.
and fans are still booing George Springer.
Like one dude, and it's a light crowd in Chicago,
but one dude is still booing George Springer.
And you can hear it throughout the ballpark.
So for certain fans, it does still mean something.
I don't know how much it means, how much of the vitriol is real,
and how much of it is manufactured.
I'd probably lean much further towards manufactured.
At this point, it is something that I got tired of talking about.
I can't really imagine a scenario where we might talk about.
it tonight other than Correa and El Tuve getting booed by Baltimore fans when they show up
to hit. That's probably the only connectivity we would feel. And if it's drastic, yeah,
I probably would have to mention it, but it's not something that I'm going to go, let me go into
my notes and deep dive the 2017. How many times can I mention Jeff Luno in this? Like,
that's not what I want to do. That's not what I care to do. But I think that's the general
thinking about this stuff. And I know that was a long answer, Matt. No, it was very thoughtful.
and I think people, and I'm going to talk to my audience here directly,
do you guys understand that?
I think that makes a lot of sense.
And so I just felt like it needed to be asked,
and Adam is so talented and thoughtful that I knew you'd give it the responsible answer on that.
Adam, I mean, Fox Sports, he'll be doing the baseball night in American game tonight.
Astros and the Orioles.
You'll see him on Fox and NFL Sunday.
And you're also, and I didn't even know this.
You're quite a DJ.
Am I correct on this?
I guess your mileage may vary, but yes, I do performance.
DJ in Chicago and various other places.
So do they ever go, you're at this club, and you do this, and like, wait a minute,
I just saw him call a game against a bucks two hours ago.
Is that how it turns out your life?
What's going on with that?
Well, oddly enough, so for some background, when I was 13, my brother bought me a pair
of turntables and a mixer, and I'm from Chicago, the birthplace of house music.
So it was just something that was part of your childhood, honestly, growing up,
either in the city or in the suburbs.
And I love the music so much that I started DJing.
And then that became a profession of mine up until the point I got hired at ESPN when I was 24.
That was 14 years ago.
So I just stopped doing it.
It's a creative thing that I really enjoyed doing.
And I think house music, I've been reading more about this, is like one of the fastest-growing music genres in the world.
Kids that are going to college or in college now are listening to like remixes of the songs that I used to listen to when I was a teenager.
and maybe this just makes me sound super old,
but it felt really good that there was some connectivity there.
I got back into DJing a couple of years ago.
And then this year, one of the fun events,
we had a Cubs Red Sox game in July for Fox on a Saturday night in Chicago,
and one of my buddies is a DJ at one of the clubs down the street.
He asked me to play a set after the game,
and guess who came along?
A.J. Persinski and Ken Rosenthal,
62-year-old, venerable baseball reporter with a bunch of Emmys and awards on his mantle.
Ken Rosenthal came out to a club in Chicago to stand on stage with me while I DJed
during, you know, after a Cubs game.
So that's the type of stuff that once in a while, like we get to do, and people do kind of
look at me oddly and go, aren't you the, didn't you just do the, so we'll see what happens.
I'm doing it tomorrow.
I've got Bears Chiefs tomorrow night in Kansas City and then I'm DJing at a club in Kansas
City tomorrow.
Are you a better DJ than Kenny Albert?
I think so.
I don't know if I want to necessarily challenge him,
but I'd like to believe that I can do this better.
I think he's got six games to call tomorrow.
He won't have time to DJ anything.
The very talented Adam Meen is.
If he did have time, he probably would end up being better than me anyway
because he's just the most versatile dude on the planet.
That's awesome.
Adam Amin with us here from Fox Sports.
You, as a football broadcaster,
you get a chance to visit with teams the day before.
You get to low little intricacies about not necessarily play calls but strategies.
Do you get that on the baseball side or two?
Or is it just because it's such a daily grind that you're not going to be able to get a whole lot of that inside dirt
that you would potentially get on a Saturday before a Sunday football game?
Usually it's a little bit more nuanced stuff and it often just relates to the starting pitcher.
It's like, you know, today we might go in and say, well, what did Brandon Young do well against you guys the other day?
that you're looking to attack or what stuck out on Saturday.
You know, that's a question we might ask to Joe.
You know, we might go into Tony Mantellino's office and say,
how do you attack, you know, hit her X, hit her Y.
I think it's a little bit less about strategy because of the day-to-day grind of it.
And so much happens in terms of variables in the first,
now like five innings of a game,
and you're really getting into this a lot faster because it's not like 15 years ago,
even where you'd go, all right, well, we got our number two pitcher going, so I'm expecting
to throw him for seven innings today or six innings today.
The wheels have to start moving so much earlier that it's impossible to predict for managers
when they're going to start making moves.
I think we ask about tendencies, we ask about recent successes, we ask about development,
and I think that's a little bit different on the football side where we are going in
and saying, this is the match.
You're playing Minnesota, you're a defensive coordinator.
and you're preparing for Justin Jefferson.
And by the way, the answer is for a lot of those defensive coordinators often end up being the same thing.
Well, we've got this coverage for this.
We've got this coverage and these down in distances.
But guess what?
He beats it anyway.
So that's when you hear the cliched stuff.
It's a matter of execution.
We have to execute better.
Basically just meaning my guy has to be better than yours.
My guy has to have a better step than yours.
He has to think one step ahead than the other guy.
And he's got to jump around.
And guess what?
50% of the time he's probably going to get beat over the top.
Like that's how a lot of the candid coaches in the NFL will tell you.
And I think that's where we lean.
We lean more towards like specific strategy for that day,
whereas the day-to-day grind of baseball does have certain things that you can talk about
because of the starting pitchers and some tendencies and maybe who's available and who's not in a bullpen.
And we kind of have to put the puzzle together as the game goes on in baseball.
So we're going to get probably at least four to five Seinfeld references for Jason Alexander tonight.
Is that feel fair?
We got to think about how many we can muscle in.
Here's the other thing, though, too.
I'm watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel right now.
I don't know if you've ever seen that show.
My girlfriend turned me on to it.
I'm a huge stand-up comedy nerd, so she turned me out of the show,
and I'm like, this is a great show.
Jason Alexander plays a small role in the show.
So, like, I keep forgetting the man has range.
I don't want to just pigeonhole him into Seinfeld.
That's the one thing I've got to keep in mind.
Last question for you live in Chicago.
Kyle Tucker is a former Houston Astro.
He's been wearing it the last week or so.
What's going on with him in the north side right now?
Well, there's a, I think I read some potential injury issues over the course of this last month.
He's been playing through some injury.
The offense just hasn't been there as of late.
Yeah, fractured hand, I guess, fractured right hand in June.
And he'd been playing through it for the last month plus.
So you can tell that the offense had kind of tailed off.
He'd been great even when I saw him in July, but I think it's probably starting to become more and more of a factor.
And listen, the Cubs have hit a skid that many teams do.
Again, the Astros may be a team that can sympathize right now.
We're your best hitters who have had a track record, whether it's short or long of being relatively consistent and relatively productive,
just have hit a slump all at the incorrect time and all at right around the same time.
And the guys that are getting on base aren't getting driven in.
And that's been a prolonged issue now for the better part of a ballroom.
month and during this time, look at the Milwaukee Brewers.
They've just bulleted their way in the first place.
I know the Cubs won the last couple of games and what is a very important series.
But the whole talk in Chicago all year, all year has been got to sign, got to re-sign Tucker,
got to re-sign Tucker.
And my general thought was, I don't know if the Cubs front office has a track record
of actually pulling the trigger and making the move.
Not necessarily that they don't want Kyle Tucker, but are they willing to pay upwards of around
for maybe $500 million
for a long-term contract for them.
I was never convinced of it.
Now you're really going to get people with
Milwaukee surging the way they have.
The Cubs flirting with more of a wild card slot
than anything else. And again, anything could happen
in this last stretch, 40 games or whatever it is.
But I still feel like
the Cubs front office hasn't shown
the track record to resign Kyle Tucker.
And my gut feeling at the beginning
of the year, my gut feeling towards the end of this year
is probably going to be the same where I would imagine
Kyle Tucker is going to test the market.
And not to say he won't come back to Chicago, but I think he's going to end up testing the market.
All right, I've kept you too long, but I've got to give you the last question on this.
Who is your gut feel-feeling?
Not that you can change your mind.
Who's one in the American League?
It looks really wide open right now.
It does.
It looks tremendously wide open.
And at various times this year, I've said the Yankees, the Astros and the Tigers all have a shot.
If the Astros are healthy in a month, I feel really good about Houston.
I really do.
If they have your Don Alvarez, if they have, you know, Jake Myers back,
if they get some reinforcements for their offense, I don't, I think this is a bad slump.
I don't panic when it comes to the Astros.
I rarely ever have.
I think the Yankees are still very talented.
Same deal.
Their reinforcements need to get back.
Judge isn't fully healthy yet, dealing with the elbow.
Stan had been in and out of the lineup for most of the year.
I still feel good about Detroit.
I know the Astros just saw them.
I know it was a rough series.
but Detroit hit a skid a few weeks ago.
I think I still lean mostly towards Detroit.
In a big series, I still lean towards Houston.
God, it's really hard to choose.
It's really hard to choose because it's been such a mish-mash in the American League this year.
But, yeah, I think Detroit and Houston are the two teams on leaning towards.
Well, I've called your Fox bosses, and I've demanded you cover the American League Division series
and the Astros and whomever, so you're going to be coming to Houston eventually.
I just want to take you that.
So thank you very much.
Death and taxes, my friend, being in Houston for the playoffs, and that's not a bad thing.
And I'm buying you a very heavy meal unless you can get Fox expense hours.
Either way, we're going to have some of the greatness.
You got it, brother.
Thanks, Adam.
We'll talk to you soon.
Thank you.
Adam Amin.
Fox Sports.
He'll be on the call tonight for the Astros and the Orioles.
It is the baseball night in America broadcast.
You can catch it right here locally on Channel 26.
And, of course, the radio call right here on Sports Talk, 790.
Dr. Roto is with us in 15 short minutes.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We take you till 2 o'clock today.
Believe it or not, at 150 is highly Googled.
It's about retired numbers in the NBA.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Thanks again to Adam O'Mean.
Such a good dude, everybody.
I just have gotten to know him a lot of it the last handful of years.
He's very talented and just a really decent guy.
I mean, there are some of these national guys that are so arrogant and just so holier than thou.
He's salt to the earth.
I hope that you guys had a chance to enjoy that conversation.
1253.
Dr. Roto coming up in about seven minutes.
If you got any questions for Dr. Roto, we'll do that in the segment two of the one o'clock hour.
Let's talk to Jim in Georgetown in 1253.
Hi, Jim.
Hi there.
Hey, I was watched.
I moved out from Houston to Georgetown a little over a year ago.
and I've been suffering through not being able to watch the Astros.
And the other night they had a Detroit Astros game on TBS.
Yes.
And when I tuned that in, there was a notification that they couldn't do it from some sort of regulatory thing.
And I'm just wondering what's going on if the law.
lawsuit that crane settled had anything to do with it?
It does not.
Does the Rangers have territorial authority?
No, Jim, it's unfortunately, it's very convoluted, and I apologize for that because it makes absolutely no sense.
It's really a dumb thing, but let me tell you in a nutshell what it is.
You can get Space City Home Network on most cable providers and DirecTV, okay, in Austin.
Now, I don't know, do you have cable? Do you have satellite? What do you have?
I have cable.
Okay. Does your cable provider, does it offer Space City Home Network?
I have not ever looked for it, to be honest with you.
Well, since you...
I just expected it to be like Houston.
Yeah. If you, if your cave...
In the city in Austin, you can get Space City Home Network.
If that is the case, Major League Baseball protects its regional.
markets over its national, meaning that if Space City wasn't in Austin, you could get the TBS
version of the game.
For instance, people in Cincinnati could watch the Astros Tigers on TBS because that's not
a space city network.
Yeah, it's Philly, it's city.
If the game was in, you know, people in Tampa or in Miami or in Cincinnati or Detroit,
whoever, they can get it.
But when you have a game that's in a market,
that has the cable channel that carries the games,
you can't double carry it.
That is convoluted.
It is very convoluted, and I apologize.
It makes zero sense.
I think Major League Baseball will change that.
But what they're trying to protect is the ability
to have the Space City Home Network folks
broadcast the game and not have any competition,
which is silly, especially for people that don't live in the greater...
I mean, I can see that being blacked out in Houston,
but to have it in Austin seems kind of.
kind of ridiculous.
It does.
And, you know, so I'm kind of locked into, I listen to the games on Iheart radio.
Thank you.
And that's something, but it's just not the same.
I know.
Now, tonight, the game is on channel, it will be on your local Fox affiliate in Austin.
So you'll be able to see the game tonight on Fox.
Okay.
Sounds good.
Well, thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah, again, I wish it was better.
I wish you didn't have to do that.
Remember, if a city has Space City Home Network, it's going to black it out.
That's why even though you would think that there'd be more fan, you know, that Austin and San Antonio and other cities wouldn't be subject to a blackout like that.
The city of Houston would be probably the only ones that should make any sense to do that.
They stretch it out to an entire region.
Yeah.
I wish, and again, I hope baseball with this new TV deal will allow a little more freedom for people outside of the city limits.
to watch it because again it's not fair i don't even know but i don't even think
beaumont can since beaumont's a space city city uh affiliate area they can't broadcast the
game on their local fox uh their tbs and in bomont and lake charles i don't even i mean i don't
know how far space city's home network reaches but it's quite a bit in this area
it doesn't make any sense all right uh let's get the doctor rhoda you guys ready for some
fantasy football chatter get away from this astro sadness of the last handful of the days uh dr
Roto's going to be with us. And again, if you want to get a question in for Dr. Roto
on your fantasy football team, we'll get that coming up in segment number two.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Roto, give me the news. I really don't know what I should do.
Goodness. Dr. Roto's been with us so long. He's put his kids through high school and college.
I'm going to be a godfather to his son who's at Rice University.
Dr. Howard thing, my friend, long time no talk.
It really feels that way, doesn't it?
But every time I hear the music, I'm ready to go.
No other city.
And we give you here on Sports Talk 790.
Dr. Rottles, get right to it.
How many Fantasy League drafts have you been in?
And how many more still to go?
Oh, great question.
So I've been in about 50 best ball drafts.
So those are just you pick a team and then you don't make any moves.
I've done about six or so regular drafts, and I've got another 10 or so to come.
I basically told my wife, next week, you're not seeing me at all after we come back from Houston,
and then probably the first week in the season week.
I'm going to have another couple of drafts.
So we're going to be very busy here in the Roto household.
Good for you.
Dr. Roto with us, and he'll be with us this year on Fridays.
It works better for his schedule.
We want to make sure Dr. Roto's happy.
So he'll be with us every Friday in the 1 o'clock hour once the NFL regular season
begins. So
let's, I like to put quarterbacks in new
places. So let's go through two or three
of them that you think will flourish and two or three
that you think will be a complete disaster now
that we're in new gear.
Well, you know, it's interesting.
So I think quarterback is obviously
the deepest position in fantasy.
And look, if you want to take Josh Allen
or Lamar Jackson or Joe Burrow
early, I'll fine with it. But I think you
can get really good value with Bow Nix
maybe in round nine, maybe
Drake May in round 10 or 11.
Brock Purdy, you can get late.
J.J. McCarthy.
Bryce Young, you could probably get as your second quarterback with the last pick in the draft.
So quarterback, as you guys know, I always tell people, wait on your quarterbacks.
I'll even tell you, what if I told you that I think that Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville
will be so much better this year with Liam Cohen as the coach versus Doug Peterson?
They gave up from week two last season.
So please, I'm begging you if you listen to anything I've said on this show today,
if you're not taking Allen, you're not taking Lamar, wait on your quarterback.
I mean, we're talking, what, six, seventh round, correct?
Seven, they're going to be perfect.
By six, by end of round six, you probably have yourself two or three running backs,
two or, you know, three or four receivers.
Then you want to take a quarterback, I'm fine with it.
You want to go get a Jack Prescott.
You want to go get a Baker Mayfield.
I'll wait even longer, MT.
I'll go to round nine.
I'll even go to round 11.
I did a draft.
recently. I took Drake May and Bo Nix as my two quarterbacks. I'm thrilled.
Good gracious. Now, you said Trevor Lawrence, good season. That's scary because,
you know, we were just talking about this earlier on the show today.
Jacksonville and, I mean, excuse me, Indianapolis and Tennessee looked to be hot messes.
So it might be a two-team race, although I think everybody and their mothers got the Texans
to win the division. So what do, are you, what kind of numbers do you anticipate
Trevor Lawrence having?
Sure. Well, look, Trevor Lawrence.
still has a good arm. He still has Brian Thomas Jr. who was terrific. They added Travis Hunter,
who's a weapon. They brought in this kid, Bachel Tootin, from Virginia Tech, who's explosive.
But the big thing is the coaching change, right? Coaches make a big difference. Look at what Cohen
did in Tampa last year. He was successful. He was successful when he was with the Rams.
Dave Canala, same thing. When this guy was in Seattle, he was good. When he was in Tampa, he was good.
Look at Carolina at the end of last year. They were a lot better. So we, we,
can't use last year's statistics for this year's assumptions. I'm going to tell you Lawrence will
be, let's say, 3,700 yards, 23, 24 touchdowns, maybe run for 300 yards and three or four
touchdowns. I'm not saying that's a generational talent, but I'm saying that might be no worse than
Brock Purdy. Wow. Okay. All right, with that being settled, let's localize it to the Houston side
of things. Really good freshman campaign for C.J. Stroud, the numbers backed off last year.
what does your gut tell you about this year's overall numbers for CJ?
Look, I'm a big fan. I really am.
I think the problem that he had last year was all of his receivers got injured,
and he had an offensive line that didn't protect him.
So, look, you've got these two young future stars.
I think Jaden Higgins and Jalen Knoll are the future stars in this league.
We need Nico Collins to be healthy.
Nico Collins is the top 7-8 receiver in this league.
And don't like, Christian Kirk is solid.
Christian Kirk is a good slot player.
He's reliable.
Now the question is this. Can Nick Chubb give them enough of a running game and can the offensive line keep Stroud on his feet? Because there are times last year, don't you remember, he looked very twitchy. He had to get rid of the ball quickly. He was panicking. He wasn't taking his time and finding his receivers. If that happens, Texans win this division by two, three games minimum. That's how good Stroud is. And I think Kate Stover is one of the most underrated tight ends in the league because he's BFF with Stroud. And I know Stroud wants to find him.
All right. Are you staying away from all of the Texans running backs this year?
Well, you know, it's funny. I don't know how much time Woody Marks will have.
I can tell you Woody Marks was a sensational running back in college in terms of catching the ball.
When he was at Mississippi State in 2021, he had 83 receptions.
Then he goes to USC and had 47 last year.
Are you telling me the Texans don't need a running back to be receiving threat out of the backfield?
I think they really do.
So will they play Woody Marks?
I hope they will.
If they do, I think this guy could be special.
I'm not touching Pierce.
Chubb, I don't trust.
I mean, he's okay, but not the guy that I'm going to draft.
But I think Woody Marks and a PPR, I love him as one of my last picks.
All right.
If you got any questions for Dr. Roto, get them in right now.
It's 713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
gut feeling on Aaron Rogers is a Pittsburgh Steeler.
I think that the Steelers are going to play not to lose.
What do I mean by that?
Let's play some really good defense.
Let's run the ball a lot.
Let's make good, smart passes.
That's why you bring in a John Huss Smith.
You throw the ball a little bit to guys like Roman Wilson.
Maybe you take one or two shots a half with D.K. Metcalf.
Now, here's a bigger question.
How many games last year did Aaron Rogers throw,
for over 100 yards.
Not many.
In fact,
one, excuse me, one.
Do I expect him to throw
for over 300 yards
for the feelers this year?
I really don't.
So that's, I think he's just one of those guys
who, you know,
will they make the playoffs?
Yes.
Could they win one game in the playoffs?
Maybe.
Is Rogers going to be conservative
and do time of possession,
you know, make sure that keep the defense
off the field, get a first down?
Yes.
Is he the Aaron Rogers 10 years ago?
No chance.
All right.
I want to go to a couple of rookies here, if you don't mind.
Let's go with the top two.
First of all, nobody expects the Titans do much.
Cam Ward, probably the least most heralded,
at least heralded, I should say, rookie 1-1.
A thought or two about him so far,
which you think could be his 2025.
Every time I watch this guy in an interview,
I like him more and more.
He loves the game.
He's passionate about it.
first guy at the, you know, at the stadium, and he's the last guy to leave. And I think that's how
you become a leader. Okay. And I think that there's something that it's going to take time. I don't know
whether Bill Callahan or Brian Callahan, excuse me, is the guy to lead this franchise, but I think
Cam Ward is a franchise quarterback. It's just going to take them time. So if you're in a super
flex league and you want them as your second or third quarterback, I have no problem with it. The problem
there is you got Calvin Ridley, who's a number one. And then you've got a bunch of guys who are like,
would be number fours or fives on another team.
So I like Tony Pollard, I like Ridley, maybe a Conquo is a late tight end.
But Tyler Lockett, he's done. Van Jefferson stinks.
I know he's a rookie out of Stanford who's okay.
You just don't have a lot to help ward with, and that's the big issue.
Two more rookies, then we'll start taking some phone calls.
Do you stay away from Travis Hunter because he's going to be playing some on the defensive side
or perhaps quite a bit?
and then a thought about how impactful Ashton Genties going to be for that Raiders offense.
So look, Travis Hunter in the leagues right now could be very powerful for people.
Are people playing in leagues where they're going to give them,
where are you going to get defensive stats for him as well or just offensive stats?
There are some leagues that I'm familiar with where you're going to get points for his tackles and his interceptions.
So this guy really could end up being a top player in fantasy.
Let's just assume he plays no defense and he's only playing offense.
I still think he could probably get like 60 receptions, maybe 900 yards, maybe six, seven touchdowns.
I mean, he's explosive.
He's still learning the position.
Ryan, you've got to learn it in the NFL.
But, I mean, the sky's the limit with a creative play caller like Cohen.
Now, in terms of Ashton Genti, I think you know this by now, MT.
I always have a Roto child.
So every year, you know, Mrs. Roto and I adopt somebody.
So last year was Malik Neighbors Roto.
Over the years, Jemar Chase, Roto, Justin Jefferson.
So I try to find guys who I think are going to be amazing talents in this league.
This year's Roto Child, Ashton Genti Roto.
Don't knock this guy.
This guy is a first round fantasy talent.
I'm thinking 1,500 yards from scrimmage.
I'm thinking 10 touchdowns.
I'm thinking 30 to 40 receptions.
I'm thinking if I'm picking 8, 9, or 10, Ashton Gentis, one of the guys I'm thinking about.
All right, there you have it.
Now, your opportunity.
any questions about receivers, tight-ins,
quarterbacks, defense.
If you want to get it in,
you've not had your draft yet.
Dr. Roto wants to help you out.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Your question's up for Dr. Roto next.
114.
It's a Matt Thomas show with Ross here on Sports Talk 790.
Oh, my gosh, hearing this song in Dr. Roto.
Oh, my God.
thing is going to happen. The weather's going to change. And we're going to have football, baby.
The one and only Dr. Roto with us here on Sports Talk 790.
Again, Dr. Roto is with us every Friday, and maybe except like Thanksgiving week will be early.
But every Friday during the regular season for the most part, 1 o'clock and 1.30 for a full half hour.
Let's start talking to the great people. And Jonathan, let's go with Koso on line number four.
First up for Dr. Roto. What's the good word, Koso?
Good to hear from you guys.
Roto, quick question.
I went Barkley and Jackson and back-to-back-round,
so that left me.
My wire receiver position kind of thin with Drake London and Cortland Sutton.
Are we expecting anything from that year?
And one quick one is I also picked at Matthew Golden.
Is that any shot about starting him?
Thanks.
Yeah, I mean, look, it's funny because I would tell you immediately
I didn't love the way you started your draft,
but Drake London, in draft, and I'm going,
in, he's going literally around pick 12 to 14, right? High stakes guys love Drake London. And when I say
high stakes, people are paying too much money to be in fantasy leagues. So Drake London is a great player,
he's a true wide receiver one. And who is even the wide receiver two on that team? Mooney's hurt,
Ray Ray Ray McLeod, Kyle Pitts, no thanks. Quintland Sutton is another true wide receiver one. They just
traded Valle. They've got the second year kid Franklin. They've got Marvin Mims who's still trying to figure it
out. They drafted Pat Bryant.
So I think he did great. I think you have yourself
a great quarterback. He got yourself a stud
running back and two receivers. Matthew
Golden, I think, is
going to be really good.
They brought him in as their number one
to be their number one receiver. I'm a bigger fan of
Golden than I am of Jaden Reed.
Jaden Reed is great against zone coverage.
Stinks against man coverage.
Matthew Golden is very good against man coverage
and I think he'll have a pretty decent rookie year.
Roto's, are there any rookies
we should stay away from?
any rookies to stay away from.
I mean, you have to look for situations.
So, for example, Amica Igbuka is in a great situation, right?
Jalen McMillan is out for nine reads.
Chris Godwin's not healthy.
He's in a great spot.
Jalen Noel is not in a great spot.
He's buried on the depth charts.
So when you look at rookies, look at opportunity.
Tyler Warren, great opportunity to be the Tideon 1 in Indianapolis.
Omerian Henton, going to be the RB1 for the Chargers.
Trayvion Henderson, going to be a 20-touch guy for the Patriots.
So rookies could start slowly.
They could do well if they're playing early on.
But most rookies, like, for example, Caleb Johnson,
I'm worried about him in Pittsburgh because it doesn't pass-protect very well.
And if you don't protect Aaron Rogers, you're not playing.
So watch those depth charts.
All right, let's go to line two and talk to Reese on 790 for the good doctor.
Hi, Reese.
Hey, so I think he may have already answered my questions, but I'm in a deep keeper league, and unfortunately, we're picking first.
I was just wondering, should we pick, we're obviously going with Gentry, but I was wondering if we shouldn't be overlooking a guy like Henderson, and then we pick 11th also, and I was wondering if there's any who your top wide receiver, rookie wide receivers would be.
Yeah, I think you take Gentry 1 in the Keeper League.
Now, I would have told you Henderson might have been there for you, but not after the preceptive.
season he's had. He's looked so good in training camp and preseason. I wish he'd be there for 11
for you. I'm not sure he is. I love it, Buka. Love that kid. I like Matthew Golden. I do. I like
Tyler Warren. I think he's going to be good. Tcha William for Carolina is another fantastic
player. They like Luther Bird in a ton in Chicago. I think you could take an opportunity
scataboo for the Giants. May be interesting. Quinshawn Judkins, if he can, you know, now that he's not going to be
charge for something. This guy's got a lot of talent. So this is not the deepest of drafts, right?
This is not a great rookie draft. If you're in one of those leagues, maybe you could trade out of
that 11 pick and get some picks for next year or the year after because 2026 and 2027 are really
good. George Pickens in Dallas, what you're thinking? And he's a stud. I think Pickens was upset last
year because he wasn't getting the football enough. Dallas's defense is a mess, right? This whole
Micah Parsons thing is an embarrassment. Jerry Jones has just lost it. Really, he's lost it.
I mean, when was the last contract that happened easily in Dallas with a star player?
It's always like a pain in the butt. So I think Dallas, their running game is non-existent.
Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, Jaden Blue, I'm not feeling it. I think Doc is going to need to
throw. It's going to throw the lamb. He's going to throw to George Pickens, and those guys are
going to need to be fed because if you don't feed Pickens, it's going to complain. And if you
don't feed lamb, lamb's going to complain. So I think Dallas is going to be a pass-first offense.
Let's go to line one and talk to Baylor Doug at 124.
Baylor Doug, well, I'm with Rodo.
Go ahead, Doug.
Dr. Roto, good to hear your voice again.
Less hurricanes and top of the storms for Florida, please.
Appreciate that.
Yeah.
What's your question?
Last year, my league really slept on Chase Brown.
I was able to get him where I didn't expect to,
before he killed it.
I'm sure he's going to draft higher this year.
Who is this year's Chase Brown?
Yeah.
That's a really great question.
I love Chase Brown last year.
Big fan.
So I'm going to tell you what I'm doing in leagues.
I am beating people to the punch on two players.
First, Trayvion Henderson.
Okay?
I know he's going up draft boards.
I don't care.
I'll climb.
I'll climb with him.
I think this guy's special.
Why do rookies not play?
Because they don't know how to pass protect.
Henderson does.
It's really good in pass protection.
And I think I said the name already.
Amika Buka.
for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
They will not be able to take him out of the lineup.
He can play anywhere.
And I think Baker-Mayfield has full confidence in them.
So look, in a world, I don't know your league.
I can just tell you in my leagues in the high-stakes leagues,
Henderson has now moved up to late third round, early fourth,
and Egbuk is going late fifth, early sixth.
So I'm just telling everybody out there,
be around early on both those guys.
They're worth it.
All right.
Let's go to line five for now.
for Dr. Roto 1-7. Honey. Hi, Fernando.
Hey, how are you all?
Good.
I'm, you know, I'm well, I'm well aware.
It's Justin Jefferson, all those great names.
But I'm really, Marquade.
I thought you're Trevor Lawrence and Bo Nix and Sleeper.
Quarterbacks was absolutely brilliant.
Now, I'm looking at risk of smart sports.
Be competitive, you know, when we will help.
Fernando we're going to let you go unfortunately
it sounds like you've got a bad connection there
I want to give you one more before we get to brand
and wrap it up here
Rodol a lot of folks are very bullish on the Patriots
Drake May season number two and they have a very soft
schedule are you into this early season hype on New England
I am and I think one of my favorite moves empty
is to put Drake May and pair them with Treveon Henderson
it's a move it's the baller move this year
May is mobile it's going to run for three or four
maybe five touchdowns, maybe 400 yards.
Anderson is going to catch 75 passes,
and I think you're going to get a lot of upside with those guys.
If I can try to piece together what Fernando was saying,
wait on your quarterbacks, build up your receivers.
I love guys like Ricky Pearson, Bucca,
and George Pickens, Jameson Williams,
get a couple of running backs in the first, Omerian Hampton.
Build your team, make it strong like a house,
then get your quarterbacks to almost be.
the roof.
All right.
Last call.
Let's get to
Brandon on
790 at
127.
Brandon,
thanks for
holding in
good afternoon.
Hey,
guys,
how are you doing
today?
Good.
My question
for the doc
was,
I drafted
Devon A.
Chain and
Josh Jacobs
as my
two running backs.
And then I
bought high
on Colston
Loveland.
What is your
like thoughts
on that?
You need to
be careful
because right now
A.
Chan is not
100
percent healthy is dealing with an injury.
And I think they are talking about bringing in Brian Robinson, Jr.
from the commanders.
If they do, that is a telling sign that they're worried.
I'm not telling you to panic yet.
I'm just telling you to keep your eye on it.
Jalen Wright also got injured in practice today.
I think you're going to see some movement with Miami and the running back situation there.
Holston Loveland, I love the player, but Caleb Williams has to be more reliable,
which we haven't seen yet.
And there's a lot of dudes there.
You got Luther Burden, you got DJ Moore, you got Roma Dunzee.
So it's not that I don't like Loveland.
I just don't know if he gets more than 45 or 50 catches.
So, you know, Josh Jacobs, good player.
I mean, he's the one that I think is your safest guy right now,
but the other two have slight risk.
Dr. Roel, great hearing your voice.
Safe travels to our town next week,
and we will talk to you in a couple weeks the Friday before the start of the regular season.
People want to find you between now and then for fantasy help,
more than how they're going to do that.
Yeah, check out Dr.rotto.com.
We're giving 10% off our season packages and our monthly packages.
We have the best value out there for anybody.
And normally I'm not on this weekend, but starting next weekend,
I'm on Sirius XM Fantasy Sports Radio from 8 to 10 a.m.
Eastern Time, and you can listen, ask questions,
and we can try to get your fantasy championships.
There you go.
Dr. Roto, we'll talk to you in a couple weeks,
and thanks for joining us again.
Looking forward to this season, as always.
Take care, MC. Talk soon.
You got it.
That's Dr. Roto with us here on Sports Talk 790.
Thanks again for him for joining us.
If you missed our conversation with Brian Bogussevich on the Astros woes.
A recap of that is next.
1.30 on Sports Talk 790.
Brian Bogusovic is a weekly guest with us, normally on Wednesdays,
but he had TV duty yesterday, so he joined us earlier today.
If you missed that conversation, well, you get it a little treat.
We look forward to talking with him about a variety of astro-related things,
and much of our conversation early on was talking.
talking about the Astros woes, and in particular yesterday's starting pitcher, the work of
one Framber Valdez.
Yeah, it was certainly disappointing, you know, seeing Framber not really go out there and
rise to the occasion.
I think you've got to look at it through two different lenses.
You know, first of all, the physical, right?
Like, this is two out of his last three starts where the sinker hasn't had the right
shape. The curveball has been pretty ineffective. And so that's kind of a, you got to sit down,
you got to look at some video, you got to work on your mechanics in between starts and get that
right. You know, when he's kind of feeling for his sinker a little bit and you see the
velocity really varying, that's when you can tell he's trying to find the right shape and the
right release point. And he just didn't have it yesterday. But that's, that happens throughout
the course of the season. That's something that that you can fix. That is unfortunate that it's
happening now, but it just is what it is. The other side of it is kind of looking at it from,
you know, where's Frommber at mentally, right? This is something that we've seen pop up throughout
the course of his career is when things don't go his way, frustration builds and it snowballs on
him. And, you know, innings get away from him and, you know, he kind of becomes his own worst enemy.
And, you know, we've never seen it like yesterday where it almost felt like he was frustrated going
into the game. Usually it takes a blue pit and some guys bunting on him and trying to steal bases to really
kind of rattle him a little bit. It almost felt like going into that game with where the offense has been.
And that's really concerning because you need your best guys to be the guys that kind of stand up and say,
hey, you made an error behind me, I'll pick you up.
You guys in scorny runs, I'll pick you up.
Now, he could have that, his daubber down and then go throw seven innings of three hitball
and spin and beautiful and get the high strike count.
And we'd be like, well, that's just Framber being fromer.
But it's so disheartening because, you know, I thought Hunter Brown went in there going,
Terrick Scoobel is one of the best pitchers in the game.
I've got to be my very best.
and I thought he had the moxie to do that.
And I guess the thing is,
not every player you've ever played with Brian Bogusevic
or every pitcher you've been with
or you've covered or talked about or played with,
has that moxie of,
I don't care what's going against us.
I'm going to fight through it.
And maybe Framber just one of those guys.
But at the same time,
we've seen him come up big in big situations
and playoff games in the past.
So it's not really that.
It's more of just getting him into the right headspace
because we know from experience that he can be a guy that can go out there and thrive in pressure-packed situations.
And, you know, sometimes it builds start over start.
There's been some things that haven't gone Framber's way, even when he's been really good in a couple of starts recently.
So it's really just getting him in the right space.
You know, in between starts, you've got to work on things mechanically in your bullpen sessions,
but you also got to get in the right head space.
And I think, you know, having a strong clubhouse, you know, having Carlos Krival,
Rayabak having El Tube there to kind of sit down with him and reassure him that, you know,
we're all in this with you and we need you.
I think that's kind of where you got to get him to because if he's right, I mean,
I'm not talking about physically right, but when he's right and he's going out there and
taking on that challenge, I mean, he's been up to it in the past.
And unfortunately, when you've had such little offense, the last handful of days, it's well.
Try, flip, move different guys around.
Generally speaking, your assessment of the lineup in terms of its up and down changes,
I don't think there's much to do with it because it's not like it's been a certain pocket of players that have done their job.
And it just felt like a collective slump among the entire team.
thus the case with no runs being scored except for the two-run homerly yesterday afternoon.
Yeah, I mean, you only have, you know, the tools that are at your disposal.
And, I mean, we've seen lineup tweaks throughout the course of the season
where if there's only a handful of guys who have it going,
you know, Joe's really tried to bunch those guys up so you have some semblance of, you know,
guys stringing at backs together.
The problem right now is that it's not really going that way for anybody.
And you can only make a lineup out of what you got.
and, you know, they dropped Sanchez down in the lineup a little bit,
but, you know, at some point the lineup is what it is,
and the roster is what it is,
and it's on the players to go out there and hit,
and you can try to find favorable matchups
and kind of give yourself advantages in the margins,
but when the players aren't hitting, it doesn't matter, you know,
if you're hitting first or you're hitting nice, honestly.
Bogey, this team has had its offensive roles really more so,
consistently as compared to being a team that's putting up
7, 8, 8, 9 runs.
To me, this has been
kind of a byproduct of you've got a lot of guys getting
a lot of A-Bs that maybe
are playing the most. And I'll use Cam Smith as an example.
Taylor Tremel has been a guy that's been up and down with a variety of different
teams. Jacob Melton looks like he's not necessarily ready for the big time of
Major League Baseball. How much of that is, do you think, is
the moment right now is really big
for a lot of these young men who have not gotten as many professional at bats like this,
how much of this is dog days and how much of this is, my God, Yordaun, please make sure your hands feel good.
We need you in the heart of the lineup as soon as humanly possible.
I think the biggest thing is, you know, middle of the order, major league hitters, run producers,
big-time hitters like Yordan or guys like him aren't very common.
And you can find guys who are swinging a hot bat and have them in the middle of the order for a while.
And you can, you know, play a hot hand for a little bit.
But, you know, at the end of the day, to have a, you know, big-time offense that consistently produces runs, you need the horses to do it.
And, you know, they did a great job for a long time getting by piecing together a lineup and having guys put in situations where they can thrive and getting production out at the bottom of a lineup of guys who are doing.
just kind of filling in roles.
You know, a lot of that has to do with you need your big guys up at top producing
so the guys further down the lineup can just be, you know, supplementing that.
But, you know, at the end of the day, you become who you are.
And, you know, Cam Smith is a guy who was in college last year.
And some of these other guys were guys that were not necessarily going to be counted on
as everyday players.
And when you get thrust into that role, at some point it's going to get exposed a little bit.
And, you know, if they're going to score runs consistently and be a productive offense consistently,
it's got to be from the guys who can do it.
And getting Yordaumbach will be helpful.
And getting Altuve hot again will be helpful.
And getting Christian Walker going will be helpful.
But, yeah, you're not going to consistently score runs if you're just trying to piecemeal a lineup together.
How much did the former outfielder in you feel for Taylor Tremel and had hit he took in the first thing of the game yesterday?
You know what?
First of all, that's the position that you're in physically there where you're on a dead sprint backwards,
but at the same time you're trying to kind of fight to keep the ball from tailing over your head so you're leaning back.
Like that's the worst position you can be in to run face first into the wall.
So yeah, that doesn't feel good.
But this is, you know, one of the things where you point at and you say, okay, the team's not playing well.
They're not hitting well.
They're not winning games.
you know, how frustrating is it, you know, is Joe's spotting going in the clubhouse and flipping tables and stuff?
But it's like, you've got guys literally running face first into the wall.
I mean, the night before Taylor Tramel laid out on the warning track and landed flat on his back.
So there's no lack of effort.
There's no lack of playing hard.
And so, yeah, I feel for guys going out there and trying to put in that effort and still not getting the results that they want.
But, you know, it's not for lack of going for it.
that again is our good friend Brian Bogus Civic you can catch him next Wednesday at 11 o'clock right here on sports talk 790 let's play believe it or not

And then in the 1 o'clock hour, for an entire hour,
Eddie Nunez, athletic director at the University of Houston's going to stop by in studio and talk to us
about what's going on on campus.
He just finished one year at the helm of the University of Houston.
But more importantly, this is for those of you that are not even necessarily University of Houston fans.
Just the nuances of NIL revenue sharing, not revenue sharing, but paying players,
the portal, all that kind of stuff,
in try it in the most elementary
fashion we can because it's so convoluted.
There's still a lot of unanswered questions.
I think there's tremendous confusion.
And more importantly to me,
you don't have a common group of schools
all on the same page.
And so we'll kind of get Eddie's thoughts on that tomorrow.
They're opening up their football operations center
officially to media tomorrow as well.
So that's be a big deal for Willie Fritz and his squad.
And of course,
next Thursday, the University of Houston Cougars will be defeating SFA.
I'm going to guess in the range of four to five touchdown.
So that's what we got.
It's going to be a tight game.
No one's going to know who wins.
And then when lumberjacks come on top, war screams.
I almost feel like you should take Friday off because you're going to be so embarrassed
and you get to wear it next Friday.
So bad.
Just saying I don't know.
