Starting point is 00:00:00 Much larger than life. Yeah. Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show. 12-0-1 in H-town. What's happening in lunchtomers? Good afternoon to you, and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. Round ball through the whole right side. That's a base hit.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Toro scores. Maldonado stops at second. George Springer and RBI single and it's 1-0-0-0-Astros. Man, did they make this error by D. Gordon hurt? And that's a liner in the shallow center field. That's got a chance to get down. And it does. Tucker around third, he'll score.
Starting point is 00:00:57 And we get ourselves a tie ball game at Minutemade. It's two apiece. Tucker hits it high in the air to right field that sends back four. At the wall, looking up. What are you talking about selling out for a fastball? That's what Tucker did. middle land and he pulled it high and far to right field and the Astros sweep the Mariners. Y'all can groove to this on a Monday, right, Ross?
Starting point is 00:02:02 Yes, we can't, Matt. Because our local nine are back above 500. Thank you, Seattle, over, over and over again. Okay, so this year has been a completely gimmicky season, right? I would like to petition Major League Baseball to add six to nine more additional games against Seattle. Yes. The Mariners cures what ails the Astros at all times. The Astros have 11 wins.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Yes. Six of them are against Seattle. The rest of the league, not so great. Two of them against the Giants. Very good, Matt. No, they're not. Okay, they suck. I mean, they're just, they're below average.
Starting point is 00:03:04 They suck. They're not going to make the playoffs. Not even close. So they have eight wins against two teams that are guaranteed without a doubt not going to make the playoffs. That is correct. That's what good teams do, though, Matt. They beat down on the bad competition. You pound them into submission.
Starting point is 00:03:20 You win four out of five against bad teams. I'm sorry, five out of six against bad teams. Record against the A's so far? 0 and 3. A's are bashing the hell out of people right now. Record against the Dodgers so far? Oh, and 2. So they're 0 and 5 against first.
Starting point is 00:03:34 place teams. Yes. Well, some of those games are close. We're extra ending affairs. Two of the games against the A's were one run, one losses, or two, what is a one run loss and a two run loss? Three to one and three to two, right? Yeah, but how many nine three games are there in baseball anymore?
Starting point is 00:03:50 Not enough. Not to justify our argument. Well, Friday night was a nice little 11 to one for the Shroes. Speaking of Friday night, by the way, good afternoon, everybody. This is the Matt Thomas show. Ross, Brendan, I'm Matt. Nice to have you guys with us today. Hi. Ladies, two. 713212-5-7-9 if you want to get in today 7-1-3-212-5-7-90 on Twitter at SportsMT
Starting point is 00:04:11 at SportsRV at Brendan Riley underscore So I'm in the car And what about 1130? The Astros activate Yordon Alvarez And I think I was listening to you We were listening to you on the IHeartRadio app And you guys had a big celebration for the 12 noon And big announcement that Yorda was going to be in the lineup
Starting point is 00:04:30 Yes And we didn't know soon after that that Michael Brantley was going to go on the injured list. Yes, he did. It is what it is. Well. But the city was in a, was in a, uh, it was a good positive buzz. They were a frenzy, Matt.
Starting point is 00:04:43 So they step to the plate in his first game. Yes. And it hits an op-home run, correct? Yeah. No, it was not. It was a, it was a, it was a conference box. Oh, okay. So it was off.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Yeah. So, uh, yeah, it was off the end of the bat. He didn't even get a hold of all of it and still went 343 feet. That's how strong he is. And then he reached base. again. Yes. And he ran the bases.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yes. And apparently he doesn't, I would think, enjoy running the bases. Well, it's not that he doesn't enjoy it. It's a painful experience for him, apparently. So thus, he's not enjoying it. Like, I like to go for walks, but if I'm tired or have a head cold, I don't want to do it. Or if you have a creaky knee, perhaps. The creaky knee or knees strike again.
Starting point is 00:05:32 I wish that were the official injury designation. Creaky? Yeah, day-to-day creaky knee. I'm telling you, there'll be things that Dusty Baker will say over the next couple of months that I will memorize and use all the time. And one of them he did during spring training was when you and I were down there, creaky knees. Yes. Knee, excuse me, I guess it's just one.
Starting point is 00:05:51 But here's the reality of it. The Astros have not been overly forthcoming. He did say when he came back that he had tested positive for COVID. he was gone a long time mean no camp so to speak no summer camp missed a handful of games start this season everybody hits COVID differently some people it's two weeks some people still in a hospital a ventilator so to say that COVID wasn't a factor would be foolish I just have a sneaking suspicion that it was COVID and creaky knees I'm with you yeah absolutely if if it were all just regular coronavirus,
Starting point is 00:06:33 it looks pretty bad that he's in the lineup for two days and then has to be held out. It's probably been a knee issue as well. I hate for you to get your crustal ball out right now,
Starting point is 00:06:43 but that's what we do here on the Matt Thomas show. Oh, no. Are we going to watch last year's rookie of the year, a man who can, with one arm,
Starting point is 00:06:54 hit a home run out of the ballpark? Are we going to be talking about his knees for his entire career? No. Oh, come on. Stay with me on this, Ross. Oh, don't do you. that, Matt. We talked about Yao's foot
Starting point is 00:07:07 all of his career. Oh, geez. You aren't an Al-Rez isn't six foot, seven-foot six. I don't even know. He don't even know that he's had surgery. I mean, but he's had wasn't he having knee issues at the end of last year as well? Yes, he was. Well, what the hell? Why didn't he get surgery or whatever? Get the creakiness fixed. You get some
Starting point is 00:07:25 WD-40 on those knees. If you guys know how to fix a creaky knee, 713-212-5-790, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Hmm Should we put his symptoms in a webmd And try to figure out what he's got at some point Let me ask you this
Starting point is 00:07:42 For a big hulking guy What is his height and weight? He's like I'm gonna say he's We'll just look it up Look it up and see what the official market I'm gonna say 6 424 or something like that I mean he's huge
Starting point is 00:07:53 Okay 6 4 240 guys If you've got knee issues In your young 20s Is a search 65-227 is what he's listed at Okay that's not true is he going to get is a surgery going to fix this
Starting point is 00:08:07 or a man of his stature carrying that kind of weight is that going to be a problem for the rest of his major league career it's very possible we don't know I'm not the doctor that's looking at him Matt so I don't want to come out and say I don't want to come on the show and say yeah Matt you know what his knees are going to bother the rest of his career he's never
Starting point is 00:08:26 going to become anything so I was at responsible I did channel 2's sports Sunday last night and Randy McIvoy asked me so concerned you. I said on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm about a 9. Nine? I'm not kidding you. Well, he's 23, as far as we know. Howard Memorial seems to think he's 40. Well, Howard's got a few conspiracy theories. We don't tend to believe in any of them, but you know, it's his right. Ross, he is so exciting. He's a game changer. There was a buzz in the air for all the right reasons.
Starting point is 00:08:58 He was a rookie of the year, having only played basically a half season last year. he's a phenom. The knees are going to be a serious, serious problem for him. I don't even know if, I mean, so what if the doctor said drop 15 pounds? Would that make a big difference? I mean, he doesn't look like he's got a whole lot of body fat. He doesn't look like, I mean, he doesn't look like he's got a flabby belly.
Starting point is 00:09:21 No. I'm not that I've seen him without a shirt on. He didn't have, say, a Daniel Cormier gut, Matt. Speaking of Daniel Cormier, I watched me some MMA this weekend. I'll tell you about that. It wasn't terrible. The co-main event, one of them got ended early because a guy twisted his ankle. I think he's the Irishman.
Starting point is 00:09:37 He's high-grish. And then Cormier was there to collect a paycheck. I don't know if that's going to make MMA fans mad at me, but that's just the truth. Because he had a Dunlap going on in the fight. Yeah, but that's how he always fights. Powerful puncher. Just not going to be in the best... He wants to absorb those body shots, Matt.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Not the best cardio condition of you think. Shock absorbers. 12-11, Sports Talk 790. It is the Matt Thomas show. 113-21-2-5-7-90. Astros sweep, please bring me back the Jose Altube that we know and love because the one we're watching right now and listen to on this radio station, this isn't the guy. Yordaun's knees, rockets get ready for game one of their series with Oklahoma City without Westbrook. The Texans are practicing. We'll visit with Adam Wexler coming up at 1 o'clock. And speaking of the Astros, Kyle Tucker, who it is the walk-off home run, will join us today at 2.30. That's a radio show right there. MMA, roadies, flying on an airplane for the first time since the whole corona for me.
Starting point is 00:10:39 We got a lot to get to. And by the way, a college football player starting to start a petition to get his conference to reinstate football after the conference canceled football last week. 713212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-790 with a message here for the Shell Federal Credit Union. Guess what I did this past week? And last Thursday, while I was out listening to Ross on the radio, you. I got my ATM card. I got my account all settled up with the Shell Federal Credit Union. Why? Because they're giving me an auto loan rate of 1.99% on a 36-month loan for a new used or a refinanced
Starting point is 00:11:17 vehicle. If you want to go to 48 months, you can get as low as 2.24%. You get $250 in cash back, which appears right now in my savings account there at the Shell. You get to skip a pay as a year and you can get deferred payments as well, plus that great low rate of 1.99%. All you got to do is stop by a Shell Federal Credit Union. In fact, I didn't even go in the branch. They came out to me in my car. That's how cool it was for the experience of working with ShellFCU. Do yourself a favor.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Go to shellfcU.org. ShellfcU.org for new, used, and refinanced vehicles as low as 1.99%. Welcome home to ShellFCU. The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 790, where Rockets and Astros play and real Texans talk. It is 1218 on the Matt Thomas show. You are welcome to join us all throughout the day. We have at 1 o'clock, Adam Webster from our 7-90 team is a Texan practice. We'll do what's talking about Bill O'Brien at 1.30 today.
Starting point is 00:12:29 We will? See, these are lay up. I got to start getting into practice. No, Matt. Never layup drills. You always say that, then I'm terrible, and you make fun of me. They're layups. It's training camp. It's social distancing. It's... Unprecedented times? How about any time he says uncertain or unprecedented or relative to, you got to drink. Yeah. Your coffee. Whatever the case. Whatever you're doing. But yeah, I feel like that you'll get, you'll have, these are like your preseason games, getting yourself, get ready for the course of the regular season.
Starting point is 00:12:57 And then 2.30, Kyle Tucker's going to stop by for a few minutes as well. So Astros taking on the Rockies tonight in the start of a pair of series, two here, and then they go to Denver for two. It's a little home at home. It's like a playoff series, start of a playoff series. Yeah, but they do that at once a year, usually with either Arizona or Colorado when they do the Interleague stuff. So that's coming up. And then we've got, believe it or not today, which I believe we've got some more skeeter tickets giveaway, if I'm not mistaken. Yes, we do.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Well, Constellation Field Baseball, and it's not necessarily the Skeeters. But it's something that's going to be out there close to that. Mm-hmm. If you want to get outside into little baseball. Yes, and they are social distancing. out there at Constellation Field. Yeah. So, you know what?
Starting point is 00:13:36 And the weather stays like it is today where, yes, you know, what? What's a heat index? I don't know, but it was, I mean, it didn't feel awful getting in the car today where it usually feels just terrible. Okay, so I said on the creaky knee watch, I'm at a nine on a one to ten for Yorda. Where are you at? Creaky knee watch, nine? Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Oh, maybe even a little higher. Nine would be like he's getting knee replacement surgery or tore his ACL. I'm going four? Three? No, I, then. the reason why I'm saying is I think this is going to be a habitual problem. So if it's habitual, then it's going to be a serious concern. I'm not saying that his knees are need complete replacement,
Starting point is 00:14:11 but I'm telling you, I don't think this storyline goes away anytime soon. I'll go four. Really? Just swing a bat. Don't run. Do a Kurt Gibson. Yes. Take your time around the base paths.
Starting point is 00:14:25 Can we get a McCain or a walker on the way on the base pass? He's 23. Well, it's almost like he's softball guy. Yeah. If big fat softball guy doesn't hit out of the park, there's no way he's running the first base. I'll just trot down there. Like Albert Pooholes does now, and Oliver Poole has been doing for the last five years. I was going to say, this isn't anything new with him.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I mean, I think it's terrible. I just, and I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm just, he's only been here a couple of days. That's it. Yeah. It's not, for that to happen, I mean, it was the, This was supposed to be, Friday was the first step. Saturday was supposed to be Michael Brantley's back in the lineup. He's in left field.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Yordon Alvarez is here. At that point, you were going to have Jose Altuve or Carlos Corre or somebody batting eighth. I mean, the lineup is nasty at full strength. That was supposed to be the day, Saturday. Then you had Michael Brantley on Saturday, wake up. And somehow, Dusty Baker said he had a great workout Friday morning. and then from there it got worse and he goes to the IL
Starting point is 00:15:36 and then on Sunday Yordon Alvarez is scratch from the game supposed to have everybody back To be honest with you Ross that's I think there's a little CYA and a little bit at all that right? I think it's a little like
Starting point is 00:15:51 we either we're just not even cover your ass it's weird straight lying to you people that's what it seems like to me yeah how do you say he's going to be in the lineup the next day and he had a great workout on Friday and then Saturday he's
Starting point is 00:16:05 the I'll. I didn't hear him. I didn't hear him said that on Friday. He actually said that. Yeah, he said he, how would, they, they asked him, how was Michael Brantley's workout? And he said, great. And he's feeling good. And then Saturday, he woke up and he's feeling worse.
Starting point is 00:16:19 To be, to be fair, he could do that. That is possible. Like the Rockets and Russ, I mean, not playing tomorrow for sure. We don't know how long it's going to be. When I had first heard, I thought he's going to be on at least. I'm not expecting him to play until at least. least game three. The Fagan report did say he's going to miss at least the beginning of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:16:42 So I would imagine that's probably the earliest he would be back and we'll see from there. Well, and this is the thing. It's not just the Astros. It's sports in general. People just, in sports, you don't want to give away anything you don't have to give away. You don't want to give the impression of a player that might be out because it then gives the team, you know, the opponents. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Well, like when Bill Belichick puts like 15 people on the injury list as or as questions, questionable for Sunday. If you're in a pair of these Mariners and you find out that Yaron Alvarez has been pulled because of the knee, do you all of a sudden, are people high-fiving each other in the clubhouse? I don't think it changes a lot of baseball. I think it matters more in basketball and football. Correct. Because now, because if you're Oklahoma City, you know for a fact that Russ isn't playing game one,
Starting point is 00:17:29 now you game playing perhaps a little bit differently. You maybe try to guard James a little bit differently. And then how do you guard Eric Gordon? what he does compared to what Russ does. The double teams are coming for James Harden. Right at mid-court? Are they going to actually get to the top of the key? Without Russell Westbrook, I think it'd be smart to start at mid-court.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Yeah. All right. So we will get to some basketball as well. But yeah, I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but I'm just, I'm not happy about this at all. And I feel bad because apparently, not apparently, he is, he electrifies a crowd of zero. There was a buzz at Minutemate Park that never should have been there
Starting point is 00:18:03 because nobody gets to go in. and now that 3 o'clock get together with Dustin and Media is going to be very interesting or 3 o'clock whenever that is because there's no days off really, right?
Starting point is 00:18:15 There's no days off until what next Monday I think it's yeah no yeah that's right they just don't have any time off and you're playing 60 games in 66 days it's crazy well
Starting point is 00:18:25 at least they're not playing like 50 games in 40 days like the Cardinals yeah including I think we would 7 or 8 double headers a couple triple headers they're playing one quadruple header. They're playing a day-night
Starting point is 00:18:36 quadruple header, which is going to be very interesting. How about they just play one game and it counts for two? That would be so... If you win one game, you're two and oh. That would be so 2020 baseball. That's what I'm saying. They might have to do something like that. Because you don't remember how they had to do. They did in the G-League or they tried it, like one free throw counts for two. Right. They just do that with a whole entire
Starting point is 00:18:58 games because that's what baseball in 2020 has become. If you want to chuckle, go look at the National League Central Standings. The Cardinals have played like 40% of what everybody else has played so far. The Cardinals are 4 and 4. The Cubs are 13 and 6. And how far are the Cardinals out of first place? Three and a half games. Well, they're in striking distance.
Starting point is 00:19:20 They're tied for the Brewers right now in second place. So they're technically in the playoffs right now, right? Yeah, what's the Brewers' record? 10 and 10. So the Brewers have played 20 and the Cardinals have played 8. And they're both 500. It's going to take a real mathematician to figure out the standings because if you play less games but you have the same loss record,
Starting point is 00:19:41 you lose a half game for every game that the other team has played. So I know that's just sounded confusing right there as it is. I have no idea what you just said, but I'm going to smile and not. Well, for instance, if you play, if you have four wins and four losses and the team in front of you has 12 wins and four losses, you're down, you're four back in the division. Yes. But you're well back as far as winning.
Starting point is 00:20:01 percentage. Correct. Far back. Far back. All right. 713, 2125790 is how you reach our show today. 713212-5-790.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Rossi, what do you want to go? Texans, by the way, are practicing. We'll visit with Adam Wexer coming up in a half an hour from now. Wonderful. They're actually hitting each other today from what I understand.
Starting point is 00:20:19 Is everything okay? They got face guards or what's going on with that? We'll find out. Because very few eyes have been able to see what's going on in Texans. That's true. And we sent Mr. Texan, Adam Wexer, to Texer, to Texans practice.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Or should we lie and say that he's like a mole? No, because he's not trying to help the enemy out. That's true. He's just trying to help us out. Unless he's a damn good chargers fan. Maybe he's a big charger fan. We don't know this. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Or working on behalf of the Chiefs for week one, the week one matchup against the... Maybe he's like me that he's always going to be an orders fan that he's by defunct becoming a Titans fan. By default. Or defunct too. Okay. Defunct would actually go on a business.
Starting point is 00:21:00 The Oilers are defaulted. The Oilers did. Yeah, I was actually not wrong. The olderers went to phone. But, yeah. So, well, I don't, yeah, I don't think Wax is the kind of person that would try to sabotage the Texans. No, I wouldn't think he was. I think he wants the Texans to succeed.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Yeah, I think it's good. All right. So college football has this petition out. We're going to talk about this when we come back. I also want to get to Rockets chatter, too. And we'll circle back with the Astros coming up in a little while. We've got to figure out, do we need to? send Jose Altuva
Starting point is 00:21:32 a care package? Hmm. Do we need to have a revival for him and Yordon? We need to find out more about Yoron first. Okay. 1227. Matt Thomas show 713212-5-790.
Starting point is 00:21:47 7-1-3-212-5-790 with a message here for Shaw's jewelry. Hey, do yourself a favor. If you are thinking about buying a special piece of diamond jewelry for that lady in your life, there's a lot of different stores in the departments. There's a lot of different things online. But if you're buying something important like diamond jewelry, wouldn't you want to go actually see it for yourself?
Starting point is 00:22:11 And that's why you need to stop by the corner West Gray and Montrose and see the team over at Shaw's jewelry. They have been in that exact same intersection since 1966. Take their price challenge. They want you to price shop because they know they will earn your business. Biggest selection of pre-owned Rolexes. They specialize in engagement rings and they specialize in diamond ring up. grades and they also offer zero percent financing for 12 months on most purchases some exclusions apply open monday through saturday 10 o'clock until seven saturdays they go 10 to six great customer service i've been there many times myself including some recent watch repair they'll do it all for you at shaw's jewelry at west grey and montrose sports talk 790 product with a grand slam home of your
Starting point is 00:22:57 asteros 1233 on sports talk 790 it is beyond bizarre here we are in a monday afternoon and we've got ESPN in our studio. We are 11 minutes away from tip off from the start of the NBA playoffs, the Utah Jazz against Denver Nuggets. First of all, no surprise there in the early
Starting point is 00:23:28 slot because jazz nuggets, not getting the juice is flowing for you, Matt? That's normally, are they doing NBA TV ones now or is it because of the bubble it's all ESPN? No, there'll be Brooklyn versus who they play in the first round. Miami, not Toronto. Brooklyn, Toronto is on some
Starting point is 00:23:44 NBA TV games. Okay. Yeah, Brooklyn, Toronto's got NBA TV written all over. And for that matter. Eastern Conference, middle of the pack. You would think the Rockets Thunder would be a little sexier than it is, but there's a bunch of afternoon games on that too. Well, they're after, yeah, 530 tomorrow on TNT. Coverage here on Sports Talk 7.90. Or is it? Right? Oh, wait. Yeah. Tomorrow? You got to get to count. Here's our situation. We have two stations that are carrying these games. and we're having to mix and match here because of the schedules.
Starting point is 00:24:17 The Astros, yeah, the game's here on KB and me tomorrow. Yes. The Astros tomorrow will be over on KTRH during the day, which is going to just delight the Rush Limbaugh fans like nobody's business. The Hannity fanatics are not going to be happy with that. No, but that's fine. It is what it is. It's the Astros.
Starting point is 00:24:33 Once in a while you get it. So, yeah, Rockets here tomorrow on 790, the Astros on 740 tomorrow. So the Astros have not gotten a lot of prime times. spots. And frankly, there's only one prime time spot. That's 8 o'clock at night. Every single night of the playoffs, at least for the first week in change, is either the 8 o'clock games either involves the Clippers or the Lakers. Teams in L.A. West Coast. Six o'clock starts local. And they're also very, very popular, especially the Lakers. Yeah, if you have Lakers' Blazers, I mean, that's two West Coast teams. You're going to probably want to put those on late as it is.
Starting point is 00:25:08 Right. Yeah. They won't put them on now at 10.30 morning to lights. Well, they're having, you know, Denver and Utah are both mountain times. So they're tipping off at 1135 local times. It's Denver and Utah, though. It is Denver. They should be happy there on national TV. Yeah, they should be like, man, we actually got to go on ESPN today. That's kind of cool. So we'll give you some updates on those games. And we never do that. We never do a live scoreboard update on anything much between 12 and 12 and 3. That'd be nice if Denver would win by more than four and a half. Okay. All right. Justin Fields. You know who Justin Fields is? Yeah, he's the top level prospect in the NFL and quarterback for Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:25:45 He will be a first round pick. Yeah, I think he's thought of as the number two quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence, correct? Pretty much the consensus. Well, he's not real pleased with the conference in which he plays in now. He put out a petition. Brendan sent me the story. Brendan, is there a particular, is it a sign me account or where did he put this petition out there? MoveOn.on.org?
Starting point is 00:26:12 MoveOn.org. What about change.org? They're not cool anymore? There's competition. Okay. That's why I asked you because I'm not sure which one it was. I know there's a few that are out. So I got to weigh my options when I want to put a petition out.
Starting point is 00:26:23 So it's to sign. MoveOn.org under the hashtag we want to play. He says, this is Justin Fields, the quarterback at Ohio State. We, the football players of the Big Ten, together with the fans and supporters of college football, request the Big Ten conference immediately reinstate the 2020 football season. Allow Big Ten players slash teams to make their own choice as to whether they wish to play or opt out this fall season. Allow Big Ten players slash teams who choose to opt out of playing a fall season to do so without penalty or repercussion. Within the first hour, they had 25,000 people sign this.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Within the first 10 minutes, they had 10,000. And this was yesterday. Brendan, what is the latest count on the sign.mov-in.org? Move on.org of we want to play. Where is that at now? 242,901. Oh, I just refreshed. It's up to 243-189.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Brittany R just signed it, as did Mark Z. Ooh, I'm a big fan of Brittany R. She's a delightful young lady. She's nice. Can we point out, I think this is pretty funny, across the top of the petition. Move on, encourages everyone to listen to public health experts and fellow CDC guidelines to protect their health and the economy.
Starting point is 00:27:34 And where I'm asking social distance. Well, yeah, that's pretty funny. That's ironic. I have to be a little honest with you here as compared to sometimes never being honest with you. What is a success rate of petitions on the web in general? On moveon.org, I'm going to say half of a half of a half a percent. It's more just to say, here I am. I want you guys to know how I feel and sign up with me.
Starting point is 00:28:02 Yeah. And then, yes. And when you get 243,000 people, I guess maybe that, I don't know if that moves the needle with the big ten, it probably not going to. If you have a lot of people signing the petition, maybe it gets more attention, I guess. I don't know. Okay. So let's do this. If you're the Big Ten and you see this, what is your reaction?
Starting point is 00:28:22 Now, let's go through a bunch of them, okay? Here's potential reactions to it. One, these are young children. Now, they're not young. They're young adults, but they're still children. They're not family of four, raising kids, doing all this thing, taking care of mortgage. They don't know any better. Sometimes you have to have elder people tell you.
Starting point is 00:28:40 you what's right and what's wrong. And what we're doing is the right thing. Yeah, there's people in power who make decisions for every reason. They're in a power. Yeah. We're watching out in your best interest. Yeah, do they know everything? Do they make the right decision every time? Of course not. But there's a reason that they're, they're the ones where the power rests on their shoulders. Option number two. This is cute. But 240,000 people in a country of how many million? A 300 plus. Blip on the radar. It's cute. But it doesn't necessarily mean that there's a large segment of the population that thinks we did the wrong thing. Option three.
Starting point is 00:29:19 Wow. 240-something thousand people in less than 24 hours. Pretty damn impressive. This is amazing. You know what? We're going to reinstate football. Should we reconsider? No.
Starting point is 00:29:32 See, that last option to me isn't even on the Big Ten radar. It's just a waste of time and a waste of breath. I'm more interested in these other petitions that are on this weather. website. Matter of fact, you know what we could do? Today's edition of Believe it or not. A petition or not? Is this a petition or not? Don't say a word. Well, it's fine, Matt. Nobody's, you know, the prize wars are calling in at $2.50 anyways. Okay. Let let Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speak longer at the Democratic National Convention. How's she doing on that? I don't know. Is she an opener? Does she get 15 minutes? They put on a red light when she talks too long?
Starting point is 00:30:09 159 of 200 signatures on that. So that's good news. Let's see. Switch single-use plastics to biodegradable plastics. They're looking for 200 signatures on that. These are boring. Yeah. Give me something juicy.
Starting point is 00:30:27 They want people in Philadelphia want Mayor Kinney to give sanitation workers hazard pay. That seems like it's got a little bit of juice to it. Sure. Free Keman Taylor. He was wrongfully convicted of, well, it says, I was. So Keman Taylor put his own petition up. And how many people have signed that? I was wrongfully convicted of first-degree murder.
Starting point is 00:30:46 He's got 192 of 200 signatures. So he's his goal. He's closing it off at a certain number? Yes. Okay. And I'm assuming that the Big Ten number has not been closed. Or do you, I guess, do you have to have a closing number? He wants three.
Starting point is 00:31:00 The goal was 300,000 and they're at 244. So he'll get that probably by tomorrow. Here's another one. Mark Zuckerberg stopped playing with our democracy. I'm going to sign that one. Okay. I'm just kidding. So I'm glad you guys agree with me on this.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Or maybe Brenda, you don't. These petition things are generally speaking a waste of time, correct? Yeah, absolutely. Yes. Oh, here we go. Demand Trump resign now. 138 signatures. And when do you want to stop?
Starting point is 00:31:27 The Supreme Court going to look at this or the senator? I don't know. Mary O'Connor made this one. But let's be as serious just for a second because I've got one minute left. If you've got a lot of kids that want to play, I'm sure he's speaking on behalf of the majority of Big Ten players. Maybe not all of them. I would say 99% of the players want to play.
Starting point is 00:31:46 So I feel bad for them. Yeah. I feel terrible for them. If they want to play... Here's the thing is, Ross, they want to play and they see three other conferences. Actually, more than three, there's more than three conferences that are going to play football this year. At this point, the American Conference, on the Power 5, they're going to play. That's four.
Starting point is 00:32:05 I don't know what conference USA, I think, is still planning on. I'm playing. So that'd be five. There are five conferences that I can think of right off the top. Now, things obviously can change in a moment's notice that are going to play football. I'm telling you, if I'm 19 or 20 years old, and I'm playing in a prestigious power five school with all the money in the world and all the proper testing, and I don't get to play, I'm pissed off. I just don't know if going to petition.org or sign this.org is going to make any difference
Starting point is 00:32:32 because I know the answer to that. Yeah, we're all pissed off, though, Matt. I want to go to a bar or we want to go to the casino or we want to know how to want to wear a mask everywhere or we want to do other things. Yeah, but the difference is that Texas is not the only state that's not allowing you to do that. You can't, or in college football, if he was at an ACC school, he's playing football. He's practicing. He's getting ready.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Well, when it started off, there were states that were having those mandates and states that didn't. But in his mind, and he's right, there are going to be 60 or so schools that are going to play football this year. And he's not going to be at one of them. Tough, you know what? You know what it is? Don't go play their football anymore in Ohio State. They don't care about you. Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:11 If you're a five-star recruit, go to a place where we care about you, the University of Houston. Right. Well, unless somebody's brother is already there, y'all aren't getting any five-star recruits. Stop it. 1244 on the Matt Thomas show. 713-212. You're rude. 7-1-3-212.
Starting point is 00:33:26 5-7-90. You know what I was going to do? I was going to buy you dinner, Big City Wings. But forget that now. You had no chance of that happening because you're rude that way. Big City Wings has specials every day, I mean, including the weekends. Today's specials, $1 chicken tenders. and 34-ounce big brews at a special price at any of the eight big city wing locations.
Starting point is 00:33:45 You can go and enjoy the best food when it comes to burgers and wings and sandwiches, salads, desserts, appetizers. We're talking about the only wing joint to offer specials every single day on food and drinks. And today, again, it's $1 chicken tenders. And they're open for dine-in, takeout, curbside pickup, or delivery, and they also take care of a great responsibility, and that is handling adult beverages to go. That's why you've got to stop by. Big City Wings.
Starting point is 00:34:14 Eight locations, the one near you. BigCitywings.com. BigCitywings.com. Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk 790. Baseball, football, basketball in Houston. Home for your home teams. We'll check in with our buddy,
Starting point is 00:34:39 Adam Wexler, at the top of the hour. He was at Texans practice today. See, the problem is, is he going to go home and shower first? I mean, it's warm out there. It's not like, I don't think we want him in here for. I mean, I feel bad for Clinton. Wait, is he going to be in here?
Starting point is 00:34:54 He's got to show it in two hours and 12 minutes. Let me stop home for a shower, calls on the phone. And then, I mean, show's not till three. Yeah, please, wax, if you're listening, go home and shower. We're looking out for your partner there. Yeah, that's true. You don't want to show up to work with swamp ass or something. That's true.
Starting point is 00:35:11 713-212-5-790. Larry's in Leport at 1249. Hi, Larry. Hello. Hello. I've been trying to figure this out, man, and I can't figure it out. Maybe y'all can help me. How do you hit a ball when you don't swing at it?
Starting point is 00:35:32 You don't. Right. Everybody in the Astros lineup takes strats. Some of them take two strats. You know, Antova's problem is when he was hitting the ball, He was letting the ball come to him instead of going to the ball. When Correa was hitting the first part of the season, when he was bedding up 3.30, 340, he was going with the pitch.
Starting point is 00:36:02 Now all of a sudden he started trying to pull everything. It's two things I know of pitching. A pitcher remembers what hit you get off of him, and he remember what pit he gets you out on. They are pitching the Astros outside. and the Astros want to pull the ball. They'll take an outside track to get their pitch, but they're not getting their pitch.
Starting point is 00:36:28 One thing about it, if you go with the pitcher's pitch, then he got to do something different, but they don't have to do anything different because the Astros are trying to pull the outside pitch. When they were hitting, they were going with the pitch. Altube was hitting the ball the right field. Springer was hitting the ball of right field. But now all of a sudden, everybody wants to pull the ball.
Starting point is 00:36:51 That pitcher, if you get a hit, that home run last night was a mistake. That boy didn't mean to throw that ball that. You know, the Astros are not protecting the plate. You know, they're going for their pitch. The pitcher's not going to throw your pitch where he can throw that ball where he won't do. You watch the game tonight and watch how many strats the Astros take. And two out of three of them going to be on the outside, going to be on the outside, other plate.
Starting point is 00:37:19 Arturova needs to go with the pitch. The assos need to go with the pitch, and then the pitch has got to do something different. So, hold on, hold on, hold on. So you're telling me, the Astros have to go with the pitch that's thrown at him to the pitch to the outside. But if they don't go to the pitch that's in the outside, they're going to want to go to the inside and getting it out.
Starting point is 00:37:40 The thing of it is, three out of four times the pitcher is going to the ball toward the outside part of the plate, even if he's throwing it out to play. So it's about the – So hold on. So it's about the outside of the outside pitch of the plate, but if it's on the inside, how it of the plate, don't swing on it because you wanted to get to the outside. It's the pitchers ball and it's the baddest plate.
Starting point is 00:38:06 It's up to you to protect your plate. They're not protecting their plate. They're looking like strats. Well, here's what I'm going to do for you. I know. Larry, you have brought a compelling argument. It's frankly the exact same one you used last year, which is interesting to me. Right.
Starting point is 00:38:22 the same thing's happening. When they had the best offense of baseball last year? So what I want to do is I'm going to create a new hashtag for the Astros. In honor of you, Larry, it's Protect the Plate. That's what the game's all about. I clearly. Yeah. Thank you, buddy.
Starting point is 00:38:39 I appreciate it. Larry, don't be a stranger to the show. Larry, I love and is always welcome to call the show. But Larry's probably called the show, what, 15 times over the last year? Probably. every single one of them is about the outside pitch. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:58 And going with the outside pitch. Last year it was a little easier to argue against because the Astros had the best offense in baseball and it wasn't really close. No, well, obviously. Offense has been struggling a little bit, certainly with Jose Al-Tuvae. Well, Springer was getting hot a little bit,
Starting point is 00:39:16 then got hurt, and now he's been shaky since. By the way, what is going on with our friend, Jose Al-Tuvae? I mean, he's gotten two, his average has gone up in the last two games. What, he's one for three and then one for two yesterday or something like that? Okay, so yeah, when you're under 200, anything above those numbers are going to certainly help you. Let me throw some. I'm sorry, one for four yesterday. Let me throw some, that still bumps his average.
Starting point is 00:39:38 Yeah, it is it, he's having the hebie-jeebies because of all the talk of the stealing and stuff and getting caught and all that. I don't think so. Do you think it's just a really, terrible one-month slump? Yes. Or do you think that we have seen the first ever downturn in the career of won Jose Al-Tube? His career is not over.
Starting point is 00:40:02 He didn't forget to add a hit. He's a three-time batting champion. He's an MVP. I know that everybody, I know that the Astros troll accounts on Twitter are jumping all over Jose Al-Tuvei. At the end of the day, it's baseball and it's 21 games. And I understand it means more, but that doesn't matter when you're in the middle of a slump. You can slump for 20 games.
Starting point is 00:40:20 And it's just things like that happen. I mean, Anthony Rendon, coming into the weekend, he was hitting like 180. He's still getting on base a ton, but his numbers were wrote. Cody Bellinger, I think, was hitting under 200. You know who's the best under 230 hitter in baseball? Is our catcher? Martine Maldonado, yeah. All he does is slug, and now he steals bases.
Starting point is 00:40:40 He's just got wheels, Matt. Wheels for days. But the Astros are going to go far in the playoffs. Like, make them Rossi. Here's comes bold take from sports guy. They need them with some Jose Altuve. There you go. You find that from another radio show in this market. Well, if he's going to be down, if they get fully healthy and he's down like 7-8 in the lineup,
Starting point is 00:40:58 it's not going to matter as much. All right, let's go to, is that Zeb? I can't read that part of that all over there. Zeb on line two calling us from Katie. Hi, Zeb. Good afternoon, Jen. I've got more of a question than a comment. But when the Astros run TV and the cameras, why doesn't the camera pan out to the cutouts?
Starting point is 00:41:17 I want to see my cutout. Well, why don't you call AT&T and complain about that? Well, you've got a lot of stroke with all these people. I figure all you'd have to do is just make a public service announcement, and they probably just pan back to the game every once in a while. So you would like to see more of you? Yeah, exactly. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Make a petition at MoveOn.org. Yeah, why don't you make a petition, Zeb? And I will actually sign that petition. Great. I'll bring it down. Do I get a prize? How many cutouts are actually in the stadium? I have no clue.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Where is your cutout, by the way? I don't know. And it's really, once you go to the soap, you can't walk in to find out where your actual cutout is. No, wait a minute. They don't tell you where your cutout is? No. That seems like a sham, actually. Maybe you're sitting next to President Bush.
Starting point is 00:42:09 No, I'm sure. I don't think they put you at the Diamond Club. No, I'm pretty sure I'm not. But, yeah, that's just the only comment I wanted to make is it. I think for a lot of folks that would like to see their cutouts rather than... Okay. Then the game. Listen to Blumble.
Starting point is 00:42:25 wrong about something. Good gracious. You're tough. Thank you for the call, Zeb. Would you rather see your cutouts? You know what? I'm going to do it. Would you rather see Zeb's cutout? I'm going to do an instant poll. No, no, no, an instant. I'll do a poll on Twitter. Would you rather see more cutouts or the game? I'll put that question in just a second. 1257. You're going to go find out what Mike Dan Tony has to say. Adam Wexer joins us next. He was at Texan's practice. We'll visit with him. Get the thought on that. More are you on the phones as well? 713-212-790. This is the Matt Thomas show. 102 on Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 00:43:10 It is the Matt Thomas show. Paul question is up if you want to check it out on my Twitter account at SportsMT. The question is, do you want to see more cutouts at the game? A friend of ours, the show, Grace, just texting me and said that you buy a cutout. Or not a cutout. whatever they're calling these things, poster board likeness of yourself, and you don't know where it is.
Starting point is 00:43:35 I'm surprised the Astros wouldn't just say, hey, you're in Section X. I mean, they know who you are. I mean, that would take like five extra seconds. But, man, poor Zeb has been trying to find out where he's been put in his cutout, and he's S.O.L. So, yeah, Zeb, we're thinking about you.
Starting point is 00:43:52 Poll question is up. We'll see exactly where that goes and before the end of the show. Right now, we say how to our good friend, Adam Wexler, Ross is getting some audio right now from Mike Dan Tony, who is speaking down in Orlando, so we'll get an update on the Rockets coming up shortly. But right now, an update on the Texans.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Wex able to get out there at practice today. First, tell the folks about the protocol going in, how long it took you to get in, and what did the guys look like when you first saw them? Well, the protocols for the different tiers of media are different, and my tier of media going to practice, first practice they had in pads outside today. were very simplistic. Basically, I was nowhere near anybody. I had a mask on.
Starting point is 00:44:33 I had my temperature taken, and I took my questionnaire. And being that it was outside, and there's so much room for everybody, I wasn't moving around very much. And like I said, socially distanced, away from the players, away from other members of the media, that was it. So a little bit of no swabbing or anything like that, huh? Okay, that's good. That's good.
Starting point is 00:44:51 All right, when you walked out there, did it look like a normal training camp practice to you, or was there a different feel to it, different vibe because of all the new protocols in place? I don't think there was much to notice that's different in terms of the football. You're going to your back and forth from field one and two. You're working out in your position groups. Ones versus ones are going to each other, 11 on 11, two, two, same thing. Every part of the practice, the interaction the players have, the physical contact that they have,
Starting point is 00:45:20 very, very similar to previous Texans training camps that have been here in Houston, and especially under Bill O'Brien, very, very similar. I've been to so many of them. There are some little bits and pieces that aren't really football related that you can notice that are different, the manner in which they're staying hydrated, how they're getting drinks, how they're dispensing of those drinks, things like that.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I can notice certain things that are going on. But you can go out there and watch this team practice, say a couple times over the last couple years, then out again today, and we're just focused on the activity and the football stuff. It doesn't look a whole lot different, And that's what these teams clearly have to do because the games aren't going to look any different. They're not going to change the way that they play on Sundays or Mondays or Fridays or Saturdays. So this shouldn't be either.
Starting point is 00:46:04 And how many days have you found out they're going to do similar practices like they did today? Because most of the stuff's been in non-shoulder pads is kind of just guys in shorts and shirts. So where are we on the number of times you'll see what you saw today in the next a handful of weeks? Well, again, the timing is already limited. We're already at the 17th of August. game is on the 10th. It's a travel date. If you won't really doing anything on the 8th, you'll be traveling on the 9th. There's only so much practice time left, and there's only a limited number that you're even allowed to have pads. And now that they've had three of those,
Starting point is 00:46:36 they'll probably take some time away from those. It should be back out there. Planning on being back out there tomorrow morning. They like going on the grass, which is where they were today. They've been in the bubble the last two days. So try to keep that from getting to where it gets to be an issue with guys. know, it wears on you when you're practicing inside a lot. So they try to mix it up a little bit. I have a feeling, again, we're about two weeks away from them. Late in training camp, you transition into regular season mode.
Starting point is 00:47:04 That usually comes right before the fourth preseason game, which I know has been canceled, but we're getting to that date already. So it'll turn into season mode at some point. They're also trying to mix in and out some of the veteran players and watch workloads for certain players because this is such a unique ramp up. Adam Wex are with us. Part of the 18-3-6 here on Sports Talk 790 out at Texas practice today. Wex, you said in your tweet earlier there are lots of nuggets that you came away from practice.
Starting point is 00:47:32 Give us one or two right away. I think you're going to see a lot of things from David Johnson because he's so versatile. And the good news is he's no different in that regard for Duke Johnson. And one of the things I asked Coach O'Brien after watching some of the things that they were doing with these guys. And we all know how they would we would expect to them to intend to use them. but about disguising things, about packages they can use. That's really whose answer for me was they just have so many abilities to trot out whatever personnel groups they've found to work,
Starting point is 00:48:02 certain looks that they want to give teams, certain plays that they think work well with these personnel groups. They have versatile tight ends. The back side of the backfield, I think are going to be fantastic. It's going to be the most we've ever seen them used under Bill O'Brien, and David Johnson's going to be right in the middle of that. He can line up in the slide. He can line up out wide.
Starting point is 00:48:19 He's definitely going to catch balls. coming out of the backfield when he's lined up next to the Sean Watson and the shotgun or literally just behind him. And I mean on every route, you know, his fifth option is a dump off coming over the middle when he's got a mismatch with a tight end who can't cover. And there are a lot of them in the NFL. And that's where a guy like that, even if he's not David Johnson 2016 scoring 20 touchdowns, he's going to give this option, this offense, a tremendous option to keep moving the change and get up and down the field. But can the Texans comfortably live?
Starting point is 00:48:50 with two running backs that probably combine, what would you say, Wex, maybe 20 carries a game? Maybe? I think it'll be a little higher than that. And when you have a team that has Deshaun Watson on it, you have to factor that in. They may call design running plays for Deshaun Watson. They may not, but he's going to run the ball. He's going to have five to seven carries most games in some form or fashion, whether they're scrambled or whether they're designed, you know, third and two runs where they know all they have to do is run them off right tackle and run to the sideline.
Starting point is 00:49:20 he's going to get the first down. And those, to me, factor in. I also think in Johnson's case, the assumption is, oh, he's broken down. He's always hurt. He was recently heard, and he did have a down here last year after he was the feature back in Arizona. He had four games in six weeks of over 100 yards of total offense. He's not a 25 carry a game back, like he said. But I think he's a bigger back than people think.
Starting point is 00:49:45 I think we're viewing him as if he's a good receiver out of the backfield, well, then he must be a small guy. like Duke Johnson is. But he's not. He's not a small running back. He will be able to run between the tackles. I don't think they're going to count on it. But I think this team is still going to carry the ball quite a bit.
Starting point is 00:50:01 So what if one guy doesn't have 25? How about if one guy has 18 to 20 and the other guy has 10? There's your 30 carries a game without even factoring in Watson. And Bill O'Brien likes to do that. I don't think that'll change tremendously. Well, if you're a Texas fan, you do want the combination to be productive regardless of how the carriers are dispersed. I just don't want, I know that you brought up.
Starting point is 00:50:20 to Sean running the football. And there's going to be some times because of his athleticism and maybe a short play call or try to keep teams off guard. But I just don't want him carrying the ball 10 times a day. I mean, that just may be stupid on my part. But I need him in the pocket with good protection and not running for his life because at some point he's going to get a hit that's going to cost him some time. And I know that's with every quarterback. But to me, him in the pocket, him throwing, him being able to look down at the field looking in his routes is the best way that this team is going to survive, not by having to rely on your quarterback being your main go-to running back.
Starting point is 00:50:55 No, and that's, to me, that's the difference between this year and each of his previous years, and you use the word rely. They're not going to rely on them for it except when, again, like I said, down in distance, maybe dictates it's just such an easy play. When you're inside the five-yard line, why bother with anything other than, hey, Deshaun, go run it in? It's so easy for you to do it. They'll take advantage of things like that.
Starting point is 00:51:15 but, you know, 99 carries, so to speak, in his first full year as a starter. Last year that went down to 83. It's going to go down even more this year. You know, it's going to be more like five times a game or less, probably much less. You mean three times a game puts you in the 50 range. So that's probably where it's going to be this year. And I think that they could perfectly well survive with that. That kind of goes into the versatility of the offense.
Starting point is 00:51:42 If these receivers are healthy, if their top three tight ends are in, healthy and those two backs are healthy. There's just so many ways to gain easy yards instead of having to count on him to find a way. I mean, there's five-yard plays at the snap immediately with some of the looks they're going to give teams. They're going to know exactly where the mismatches and where it's easy to just keep moving the chains. And then if a guy makes a guy miss, all of a sudden it's a big game. All right, a lot of other things to get to, but we'll leave one more topic on the table before you guys do your show at 3 o'clock. Duke, Edgifor got hurt over the weekend. He's done for the season. Did Bill O'Brien address
Starting point is 00:52:15 where he is depth-wise on the defensive line? I mean, he was one of many guys. He was in a group with rookie John Grenard, Charles Amanahue, and Brennan, and Brennan Scarlett, and Jacob Martin. These are all guys that have to do something pass rush-wise. Now you just have one less body to work with. Grenard's kind of behind the eight ball because he's a rookie. A menahue's probably going to split his time, both inside and out.
Starting point is 00:52:40 But I think you'll see a huge jump from him in year two. So it really comes down to Jacob Martin probably. and Brennan Scarlet, most likely it's Martin. Martin's a pass rusher. He's an edge rusher. He's going to struggle against the run because he's not as big as some of the other guys, and he's going to be playing on passing down. That's really where he and Duke Edgeier 4 might have been looking at the same reps. They're not quite the same player, but those are two of the guys that could have been at the front of the line for being that next player. Somebody else besides JJ Watt has to disrupt other teams off,
Starting point is 00:53:11 has to get quarterback hits. And that's really Jacob Martin's gig now to go out and tackle. All right. Last nugget before you get ready for your show with Clinton at 3 o'clock. Big interception today from A.J. Moore. They had ones against ones. Deshaun Watson was out there. Play kind of broke down.
Starting point is 00:53:29 He stepped up in the pocket. Thought he had Jordan Aiken's deep kind of underthrew the ball a lot. And Moore did the right thing. Before the ball arrived, he turned around, he played the ball, and he picked it off. So that's your pick-to-click for today, huh? I like it. For today, yeah. Yes, training camp practice, impads, outside day one.
Starting point is 00:53:50 That's my pick-to-click. We're going to keep this on the record. Every time you join us for these practices, we're going to be your pick-to-click. And if these guys want to be being stars, we'll give you the proper credit you deserve. If they want it being busted, don't make the team, it's not going to be good for you. Well, the reality, my pick-to-click for the season was the guy we talked about the most today. That's David Johnson. It's going to turn out to do a good acquisition.
Starting point is 00:54:13 The manner in which they got him and the money that he makes, notwithstanding. To me, at this point, it's kind of irrelevant. There isn't, it's not a wish. It has to be this. You've given up your best receiver for a running back who doesn't have the stats the last couple of years, who's been heard, who makes an enormous amount of money. He's got to win here. He's got to be successful.
Starting point is 00:54:34 To me, that's kind of a yes and no deal. Yes, for the reality of it, you're right. But at what point would he ever really truly win? He's the best running back in the NFL this year, which is probably not going to happen. do you even then say oh yeah the Texans won I'll say this if he I don't even know how to look at it if he gives here and the other guy's not that's it's it wex if he gives Carlos high numbers it's a win he'll get those he'll have more totally yards than Carlos hide no question about it all right all right we have you on recording for saying that right now you got it bold wex prediction
Starting point is 00:55:04 wex you do a show with adam clinton every day at three o'clock what is it called the can you say it for me no I do it at 256 see you later it's called the a team All right, at 3 o'clock. Perfect. Goodbye. All right. Adam Wexler with us from Texans training camp. He's with us in a couple of hours.
Starting point is 00:55:22 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. What's you talking about Bill O'Brien coming up at the bottom of the hour? Kyle Tucker, who hit the walk-off home run for the Astros yesterday, joins us at 2.30. Right now a message for bronze roofing. Hey, if your roof has suffered any damage, a man, there was some pretty intense thunderstorms yesterday. A little nervous. about the condition of your roof.
Starting point is 00:55:46 I want you to call bronze roofing right now at 281-480-9900. You know that high winds and rain and falling debris can indeed cause... Matt Thomas continues on Sports Talk 7-9th. Your rockets, your Astros, your voice. Thanks again to Wax for joining us from Training Camp. He'll do that semi-regularly as access is extraordinarily limited to the media. we would want it to send Ross, but he was sleeping,
Starting point is 00:56:17 so that didn't do us any good there. Texas don't let me in there, Matt. Why not? You did nothing wrong. I'm just kidding. You and I are Astro Rockets heavy until one season ends, which hopefully won't be until October, and another season ends,
Starting point is 00:56:29 hopefully it won't be until October 2. We'll see. However long in the last, that's right, I'll be locked in for the Rockets pre-and-post game shows Thursday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday this week. Yeah, Craig's calling games one and two. I will do three and four.
Starting point is 00:56:43 Okay. And so we'll do normal. When the Rockets of the Road team, which would be, they won the three-way tie breaker for the four-seat. The Ambigate was really screwy. They gave us a bunch of different scenarios. And most of them involved four and five. You know, who was going to be the four-five between Oklahoma City and Houston?
Starting point is 00:57:01 Not that it makes any difference, but for our broadcasting purposes, it kind of did. And then when Utah and the Rockets and Oklahoma City all finished with the same record, it created a three-way tie. and for one of the rare time sports RV, winning the division paid off. Yes. Southwest Division winners get the higher seed. Normally in the last few years, it did not matter to the NBA.
Starting point is 00:57:21 Right. Because you had, what was it? Somebody was like a six seed with a way better record than one of the three. They used to give you top three for division winning. No, they don't do anymore. But the tie breakers. It was ridiculous. Yeah, tiebreakers going to play on the division on the three-way tie,
Starting point is 00:57:33 and that's where the Rockets won the Southwest. Do they even put, I don't think we put up Southwest Division banners in the arena, to do it? They have a banner and it says division champs and it has every year on it. Yeah. Which is what the Texans should do, but I guess they put up a new banner every single time now? I don't know. I don't really pay attention. I usually lose
Starting point is 00:57:50 circulation and nosebleeds when I look up there. I haven't been NRG in like four years. I went for the Jacksonville game last year with Peyton and we sat on the Jacksonville side and I'm like, God, Doug Morone's a very bad NFL coach. And then I watch the rest of the season and it further pushed my agenda along. How many
Starting point is 00:58:07 How many Jaguar fans did you see there? None. Zero? They don't travel, do they? Well, there might be some Jacksonvillians. Do you think there's... Jackson Villains? You think there's Goober Jacksonville Jaguar fans?
Starting point is 00:58:19 Jackson Vinalana Nights? Like Goober Traveling Texan fans are? The traveling Jaguars? There's the traveling Texans. Do you think traveling Jaguar fan goes to City Hall in downtown Houston and puts Jacksonville gear all over their water fountain and stuff? you're looking at it. Don't even look it up.
Starting point is 00:58:39 They have official Jaguars fans' travel packages. Yeah. It doesn't mean there's a group. Yeah, I can't find any traveling Jaguars. Reddit. 50, 75 tops. I'll get the traveling Texans credit. That group spends all their money on road games,
Starting point is 00:58:58 which I think will be a lot more limited this year. By the way, you'd see that the Baltimore Texans game will not have fans in it? How many games are going to have fans in the NFL? I think it's going to be a game. I think it's going to be a week-to-week basis. I don't think there'll be any sort of firm. Now, the only team that I know, like I think the Raiders have said they're not going to have any fans this year, which is sad because that's a brand-new stadium in Las Vegas.
Starting point is 00:59:20 I know. And then on the opposite side of things, the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones has said, we're going to have fans. He was talking about full capacity. I'm like, Jerry Jones, what world are you living in? Not ours. He looks like a ghoul from another realm anyways. Yeah. maybe the facelifts are starting to eventually catch up with him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:59:38 Face tips of having him looking ghoulish in the last five years. 713-212-5-790. What you're talking about Bill O'Brien coming up at the bottom of the hour? Right now, Christian, in the north side of town on 7-90. Hi, Christian. Hey, man. You know, normally I'd call a show. I'd be happy to be on the show, but frankly, I'm disappointed in you guys.
Starting point is 01:00:01 I can't believe y'all are letting out. I can't believe y'all are letting out too. They struggle like this, and y'all've got to cure in y'all's back pocket and just negligence that y'all aren't fixing his point. Ross has got to do, Ross has got to get his soul on, and y'all got to do a preacher Ross bit, and Altube is going to go four for five of the home run tonight. Well, you know what I thought of first, Christian? I thought about putting together a care package for Jose Altuva. that maybe the revival
Starting point is 01:00:34 Can we be truthful for one second Christian? Because you've listened to show quite a bit. There are some people that believe the revival is insensitive. I don't believe that, but I don't want to... In today's climate, in today's cultural climate, I can understand. But I'm telling you, Al-Tuvae needs a little bit of Jesus in his life. brought to him solely by Ross David out. Okay. Point taken, for sure. Thank you,
Starting point is 01:01:08 Christian. I appreciate it. Ross, you and I, Amanda, man. We've never even talked about this on air. I love it. It's funny. Does somebody complain to you about it? There have been a couple. Oh, no. Nothing formerly. That's a shame. But unfortunately, in 2020, I would say lighten up. I would say
Starting point is 01:01:25 please lighten up. It's a joke. But because a couple people have said, look at you all stereotyping. I did one once on a sports RV show a couple years ago, and this lady got really mad at me for blaspheming. And then I immediately went back into it just in the middle of her call. Because you're an agitator. Me? Ross, the agitator.
Starting point is 01:01:47 I work with you every day. That's not true. I know who you are. So let's do this. We got, what you're talking about Bill coming up at 1.30. If you would like to contribute to a Ross, to excuse me, to a Jose Al-2. Step up to the collection plate. Goody bag.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Okay. Care package. We'll call it Altube's care package. Not package, just care package. I don't want to know anything to do with Altuve's package, Matt. We've got to send him something. Like, for instance, when I was at North Texas my freshman year, and I was so deep in the, it was down in the dumps.
Starting point is 01:02:21 I was way from, I was homesick and wasn't meeting girls like I wanted to. What? You weren't just slaying out at North Texas, Matt? It was a struggle. Really very, very, very bad struggle. I would go to my post office box at the North Texas campus, and there would be cookies and some money from my mom. Wow.
Starting point is 01:02:42 That was a care package I needed. You said cookies in the mail? Yeah. You don't spoil or go bad or anything? It's put them in foil. Houston of the Dallas is one day. Oh, that's true. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:02:48 Okay. So we're going to create coming up at one. Oh, by the way, let me ask Brendan, because you cut the Bill O'Brien up. How are we doing on the, are these going to be good and juicy ones? Are these kind of boring a Bill O'Brien's? I thought he was kind of disappointing. All right. So we'll do, maybe we'll start the care package.
Starting point is 01:03:05 What does Jose Altoube need in a care package? Plus, what you're talking about Bill? That's a double doozy of a segment coming up next. I can't wait. You should not go anywhere. It's Matt Thomas Show 127 on Sports Talk 790. Ross, maybe Jose needs a little energy boost. Yeah, you know what?
Starting point is 01:03:21 Maybe you're like Jose Altoouvae. And you're not feeling yourself. You're a little bit sluggish and you need to feel 10 years younger. Jose Altuvae is in his 30s. A lot of time, you're going to have. issues with low testosterone. And let me tell you about my friends at Cinergenics. Starting point is 01:04:30 deeply. And Cents back gardener looking up. Let's go! Sports Talk 790. Jose Al-Tube puts the Astros up. Your home of the Stroes. 132, Sports Talk 790. If you have something you want to give
Starting point is 01:04:56 to Jose Altube for his care package, let us know. Oh, I'm looking at some of them. Bifocals? That's not nice. A DVD of his first 20 hits as an astro player? send some more Venezuelan food to the clubhouse? That's not a bad idea, right? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:05:20 What is the standard Venezuelan fare? I'm sure there's rice in there somewhere. And, of course, the anti-astro fans, a dugout full of garbage cans. Ha, ha, ha. Homemade chocolate chip cookies. Ooh, we've got a repas. Some great Texas whiskey.
Starting point is 01:05:37 Sacrifice a live chicken. Some pavilion, grioyo. Somebody says greenies. I know. Zebra cakes. Ross, you know how the zebra cakes were. I do like me some zebra cakes. All right more on this coming up
Starting point is 01:05:48 momentarily. But right now, it is a time-honored event that we like to do here in the show at least once a week, sometimes more than that. We like to have Ross guests with the head coach of the Houston Texans said during his media availability. We simply call it this. Coach O'Brien.
Starting point is 01:06:05 What's telling about? Anybody can just play lousy soundbites. That's boring. We like for you to guess what he said. Now, we are being honest and true here. You never hear these ahead of time. That's correct. I have not heard these.
Starting point is 01:06:15 And Brendan is now slugging these because when Chris Gordy slugs them, they're terrible. I know Chris is listening so I can say this. Matt said that, not me. I definitely said it. And you know I'm right, Chris. So Brendan, you slug these. Take away what the essence of the conversation is, but not the conversation. So we've got three of you today.
Starting point is 01:06:37 First one is going to be 25.9 second sports RV. It's about the intensity and focus. at today's practice? Well, it's intensity and focus in the unusual situation with the pandemic. Well, you know, the guys have been really good. They're professionals.
Starting point is 01:06:54 They're working hard, and, you know, this is something that everyone is having to deal with and the intensity relative to regular years has been really good. I've been impressed. All these guys have come in here and ready to get to work. Fired off. I mean, I think it's been good. These guys,
Starting point is 01:07:10 they've been locked in and meeting. It hasn't been perfect. I mean, that's not, you know, I don't think, I'm not sure it's ever perfect, but, but the intensity and the attention to detail and the, the ability to focus on what we're trying to get done. I think it's been really good. I've enjoyed, you know, this team and coaching them and I think they've worked hard every day.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Okay. Well, I nailed it. I feel like that was almost like, you know how in Houston high school you took pre-algebra? Is it in order to learn how to do algebra? Yes. Well, I didn't. That was your pre-algebra class right there. Whatever.
Starting point is 01:07:57 You get five stars, but it wasn't like... Thank you. It wasn't tough. Move on. Brandon, do you think he was challenged by that? You know what? You do the next one. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 01:08:06 The bid is you, not made. It's yours. You're Alex Trebek there, sitting there with all the answers and criticizing. I just want to question why we're attacking pre-algebra. I was a really good student earlier in my life. I took algebra as an eighth grader. Uh-huh. And then I just said, why am I doing this?
Starting point is 01:08:25 I was pretty good at math. I just didn't like math. I like math up until the algebra two. And then after that, like calculus. What's the other one? Trig. Oh, God knows. Geometry, no.
Starting point is 01:08:36 I couldn't do anything, but I couldn't do a proof to save my life. I was a worst profer of all time. Okay. I like the given. How are your derivatives? X, Y. I forget it. Next up, 40.3 seconds.
Starting point is 01:08:49 Now, this one's a little more of a challenge. This is meaty. This has got meaty. 40 seconds. How have you shaped your roster based on your divisional opponents? Well, you know, anytime you're building a roster, there are going to be a number of factors. And one of the things you do have to look at is going to be the other guys and who you're going to be playing against. You know, if the other team has a strength in one area, you would like to counter that.
Starting point is 01:09:12 And that's definitely something that factors in. Is it the end-all be-all? I would say no. but it's certainly something that we look at when we're going through and looking at our roster and in ways we can improve. We definitely talk about our opponents. The best road to the playoffs is through the division. So if you win the division,
Starting point is 01:09:29 so we have to think about those teams and what the strengths are of those teams and what their philosophies are. You know, all three head coaches, I have a ton of respect for it. Are really good football coaches or good people. So we do take into account what they're all about or what we believe they are all about. And then sometimes that has to factor in. But at the same time, we have to know what we're all about.
Starting point is 01:09:56 And we have to figure out, you know, hey, is this guy dependable? Is he tough physically and mentally tough? And is he smart? I think I did pretty good. Yeah, the first 20 seconds was a clear waste of time. I don't care if you like the coaches or not. if you like them. The question was, how do you prepare for divisional opponents? You get four stars. I'm not giving you back-to-back five. That's fine. Another layup drill here. This is so freaking easy.
Starting point is 01:10:23 What? 36.3 seconds. How the new receivers are working with Deshaun Watson. This is such a layup drill. Things are progressing well right now. Obviously, there is room for improvement, but the guys were working together in the offseason and Deshaun knows these guys and Brandon's been out there. and he's looking pretty good. And we know Will Fuller is a guy who's been around Deshaun for a number of years. So the chemistry is improving. It's looking good. We're not exactly where we want to be or where we need to be, but things are looking up.
Starting point is 01:10:54 Yeah, it's been tough because, you know, they didn't have an off-season program. They did get together in the off-season on their own. They did a few times. But, yeah, they didn't have an off-season program. So they didn't get any of those type of reps. So we've got some ground to make up there. They work hard. They get a lot of these individual reps in practice.
Starting point is 01:11:16 But yeah, no, we've got a ways to go there with the timing and the passing game. I think it's getting better. I think Deshawn's had an excellent training camp. So I think it'll get better and better. But yeah, that's something that definitely we talk about working on every single day. Brendan, you did a lousy job today. You gave him while the rest of us were playing Augusta National, sports are being on a putt putt course.
Starting point is 01:11:40 So the options today were either that he could be on a putt putt course or he could be answering questions about individual like player 59 on the Texas roster. God, I've been so boring. There were a lot of those. Man, don't be mad.
Starting point is 01:11:54 You don't have to get upset my success, Matthew. God, fuck. You know, he's been having a rough time with believe it or not lately, so. The questions have been terrible. And well, let's see what happens with these change.orgs. Today is a layup
Starting point is 01:12:08 drill for them. We'll see. Believe it or not today is going to be whether or not this is a current petition. Oh, I got a good one to give away for a, it's a pretty good one. Kyle Tucker's going to join us in less than an hour here on Sports Talk 790. Let's go to Jeff on the North Loop on 790. Hi, Jeff. Hello, I heard you talking about your down earlier and his injury. Yeah. I wonder if he's now the Astros Will Fuller. seen as how he's been injured for a pretty good length of time last year and he plays, what, one game and develops his sore knee this year? I mean, he's a young man.
Starting point is 01:12:47 Did he have an old football injury that we don't know about? No, and that's actually not a fair comparison because Yordaun did play last year. Will Fuller, he missed more time than he played or it felt like it at least. I mean, this is, Will's been having the injury issues for multiple seasons. Yordawn is only in his second season. But I will say this, though, Jeff. It is, it is alarming that he just got here, and these knees that we always were kind of joking about
Starting point is 01:13:12 have turned it to be very serious. Yeah, because was it the knee last year, too, or was the foot or something? Well, it was that in a September slump. But, you know, yeah, a variety of things. But I think his knees have always been an issue. His knees, I got you. Well, I'm just hoping that the trainer,
Starting point is 01:13:31 whoever the trainer is, is still working hard. this year because a guy that talented should be able to get out there and swing the bat a little bit more than than we've seen. Again, last year he was incredible, but again, he seems like he's a pretty good physical specimen coming up with the knee problems. Yeah, it wouldn't be like he's fat. I mean, I don't think there's, it's like he's out of shape. I just think that maybe, you know, some guys that are trying to play a sport that carry that kind
Starting point is 01:14:00 of way. Like I think Zion Williamson, I don't think he's fat with the New Orleans Pelicans. but there's going to be something about his body that may not allow him to stay in play a full season year and in year out from New Orleans. I think so far the jury is very much out of the end. I agree with you. I agree with you. Good, good example. Two young athletes.
Starting point is 01:14:18 But yep, you've got to stay healthy. Well, we'll hope keep our fingers crossed with Fuller. Thanks a lot. You got it, Jeff. Thanks for the phone call. Yeah. Well, Fuller does his body just not may be able to stand up to it on a different account. I mean, he may just be too.
Starting point is 01:14:32 He's small and frail. Yeah. He's frail is the part that hurts. Frail is not who Jorn on is. No. He scares me. You just have a lot of weight carried on those knees, Matt.
Starting point is 01:14:46 But do you think he could lose 10? You think that would make a difference? I don't know. I haven't seen him with a shirt off. So I'm saying. He might be chiseled and say, where are you going to find this body fat? I don't find anywhere.
Starting point is 01:14:58 I don't say he's like a Zion Williamson. I think I think Zion's a little more. Doey than he is. I would agree with that. 143. Speaking of Doe, I watched that fight today tonight. Daniel Cormeier, collect the check. Doe.
Starting point is 01:15:11 713-212-790. 7-1-3-21-5-790. And by the way, if you say, you're calling somebody to Dewey, I built my body based on dough. So trust me, I'm right the leader in that category. Let me tell you about oops, steam cleaning, a 281-8-220-561. 281-8-2-0-561 for true steam cleaning done at a fair price by trained professionals. Coming up, top of the hour, we'll revisit the sweep of the Astros to the Mariners. I should say by the Astros to the Mariners.
Starting point is 01:16:39 Astros and Rockies play tonight. You'll hear it right here on Sports Talk 790, beginning with the On Deck Show at 8 o'clock. So it would be 7 o'clock with the On Deck Show. These 8 o'clock games kind of, hmm. I know why they're doing it. I mean, I like it. Afternoon affair tomorrow and the Rockets play
Starting point is 01:16:58 late afternoon, early evening games. It's a funky week for Houston Sports. It's a funky week for all of us here to figure out. I mean, the biggest takeaway, at least for me, since I'm not a regular 9 to 5ers, have to be up all the hours of the night, at least on Tuesday and Thursday for Houston Sports. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:12 Three things that you had, on people of Twitter, except for the banging of trash cans, because I know who you are outside Houston. I know how you all roll. The three most common things that according to you, Altuve needs in his care package, one is a slump buster. Well, he's married. Two is Joe Boo from Major League. And three, the ability to bite his fingernails.
Starting point is 01:17:33 I told you the biting the fingernails. Has he not been biting his fingernails? I have. Do we have confirmation of that? Has he been going into the clubhouse? I've seen to do it a little bit. I don't recall one way or the other. I don't spend a lot of time staring at him.
Starting point is 01:17:45 Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm kind of at the beck and call the TV screen? Yes. Slump busting ain't happening. Mrs. Altuby will have no part of that. Mark Grace might, but not Mrs. Well, but not Mrs. El Tiber. Mark Grace is in some hot water of his own.
Starting point is 01:18:01 Yeah. He was on the Cubs broadcast over the weekend and basically told the story about his ex-wife and during the conversation, he didn't refer to his ex-wife by her name. He referred to her as a dingbat, which is what Hose-it, which is what Archie Bunker used to call his wife Edith.
Starting point is 01:18:19 Because she wasn't the brightest bull about them. Yeah. And that got him to some hot water. Well, the story was that his ex-wife had dropped him off at the stadium and apparently she wanted to come to the game so she decided to come back to Riggily and or no, not Riggily. I guess they were in Milwaukee.
Starting point is 01:18:35 Yes. Because then she parked in Bud, Seel, parking spot. At County Stadium. Yeah. Called her dingbat. And now he's suspended. For how long? I want to run.
Starting point is 01:18:48 He was suspended from coming on the broadcast. He's not on there every day. He was just there as a guest. You know, all the Astros have bag well come by or somebody, Birkman or somebody like that. It's basically that kind of situation. He was just there as a guest. And will not be invited anytime soon, it sounds like.
Starting point is 01:19:04 He's done for saying dingbat. It's 20-20 for you. This is the worst year. ever it's pretty bad yeah it's pretty bad i'm telling you as as there are i'm sure there's far worse things that mark grace is called his ex-wife as honest as i can be i am i am now 25 times more careful what i write on twitter you don't want to get canceled matt or just crushed by that one percent of america that's looking to crush anybody that doesn't believe everything they believe there are people that's the funny thing and i almost tweeted this the other day the funny thing you
Starting point is 01:19:41 say that I didn't. It's like because it doesn't matter and it's just going to stir up stuff that I don't want to say. There are people like, would they get their feelings hurt, do you say something that hurt your feelings? And it's like, they are entitled to something. Like, hey, you hurt my feelings. I need you fired. I need your life ruined. And that's going to make me feel better.
Starting point is 01:19:57 It's just, it's weird to me. Like, neither one of you will be able to relate to this. But you both have been, how old are you, Brendan again? In 27. Okay. So when I was 24, 25, I felt like if I believed in one political person and you Brendan believe in somebody else
Starting point is 01:20:19 that we could agree to disagree I like Clinton, you like Bush, vice versa, whatever the case may be, right? And that you just went your separate ways after that. I feel like in 2020, if you are fan of person A, and I'm a fan of person B, you are going to crush me for liking B. You are going to think I'm the worst human being alive. I feel like I've even seen that difference.
Starting point is 01:20:48 And so I'm 27. I've been able to vote for nine years. I don't think nine years ago it was anywhere near as extreme as it is now. And maybe it's because Trump. Maybe Trump is the most polarizing president or president in the history of president. I think that's a huge part of it for sure. But man, I hope it changes where if you wanted to, to have a political conversation, which we don't.
Starting point is 01:21:11 But it's just, man, it just feels like I don't even want to because I know that I'm going to be called the name. I think it's a disgrace. You're part of the problem with it. People like you, then the people that don't like you, hate it. I mean, oh, it's just. That's enough. Put down the mic. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. We're
Starting point is 01:21:28 talking sports. Thank God. Roger and the RGV at 153. Roger, what do you have today? How are you doing, Matt? Love you show. Thank you, buddy. What's up? And I hope. are staying safe with this COVID. We are. Here we go.
Starting point is 01:21:43 It's going to be incredible these playoffs. The bubble, it's just like, it's exciting. I don't know what's going to happen, you know, with that Westbrook injury, but I know Chris Paul will have something to say, you know, in these playoffs because of the trades,
Starting point is 01:22:01 and I don't know if there's any ill-sealing to them rocket. That's one. And as far as El Tube, I got a question for y'all, you know, you're all of the pros. Do you think this is an albatross of what's going on with Altuvi or do the Yankee fans, which I have a lot of friends that are Yankee fans, do you blame them if they think, you know, the Steven's signed scandal.
Starting point is 01:22:24 That's why he's having a bad season. Yeah, it's a good point. Thank you. It's an easy narrative, Ross. It's, I mean, right? It's a low-hanging fruit. Yes. It can't be just a slump.
Starting point is 01:22:34 It's got to be his mind is wearing on the pressure of trying to come. back and be the same Jose Al-Tube with all this sign-stealing stuff in front of him. I mean, Breckman's okay. Correa's okay. Uli's okay. Let me ask you this. Does Jose Al-Tube spend hours on the internet? No, I don't think so.
Starting point is 01:22:55 Does he spend a lot of time reading the athletic? Does he a big Jeff Passing fan? Does he go, God, I got to check out what Buster Only said today? Does he have notifications on for Bob Nightingale articles? I don't think so. So if that, if he was really slumping because of that, you would have to be reminded of it daily. Jose Al-Tubia Ross, let me see if I can figure his life out right now. He goes home, he watches games, he spends time with his baby and his wife, he goes to the
Starting point is 01:23:29 ballpark where he's around his teammates and his friends and his coaching staff and people that love him. Anytime, if Jose Al-Tube was to go to a restaurant in this town, he's not going to get. get booed. He's going to be loved on and appreciated and probably have a meal bought for him. Where is this? Like for instance, if I went to my, went to a social media site and saw my name, Matt Thomas does this, Matt Thomas says that, he's this, that would wear on me, right? Because I know that the wolves would be out for me. But if I'm Jose Altuve and I don't go to Twitter and I just live a normal life, how does he know how people outside of Southeast Texas feel?
Starting point is 01:24:05 are people calling his house in the middle of the night Jose you suck if you didn't have the buzzer you wouldn't have been able to hit the home run you know what I'm saying I don't
Starting point is 01:24:12 I'm not completely buying into it do I think there's pressure that goes with what the team has gone through the last year of course be foolish not the thing it's not on their minds but I don't believe
Starting point is 01:24:22 that Jose's prolonged season long slump is because he's sitting in home going man another national writer did a story about us no he hadn't tweeted since 2018 November you see what I'm saying
Starting point is 01:24:34 maybe he's got burner accounts and he's super hyper. He's looking at two phones at all times and he's hypersensitive and reading every story and it's mentally ruining him or it's baseball and he's on a 20-game slump. And unfortunately, 20-game slump in a 60-game season is way more pronounced. Absolutely. And it's going to be under a magnifying glass because that's what's happening with this, as you would say, Matthew, a gimmicky season. Totally gimmicky season.
Starting point is 01:25:02 But it's still a baseball. It's not like the fans add 20 baseball. percentage batting point. I mean, he's in a season-long slump. And you can't hide that. That's why, again, while I would like to get him a slump buster, Mrs. El Tuvei does not want that. Maybe they need to sacrifice a live chicken, Ross.
Starting point is 01:25:20 Maybe they need to. Well, I don't know. You can't do that in 2020, Matt. We'll get a tofu chicken. Well, how about a bunch of, like, churches fried chicken sandwiches or go over the Chick-fil-A combo of his choice? Something. We've got to do something.
Starting point is 01:25:33 Some big city wings? Yeah. I'll ask my buddy Sam at Big City Wings maybe 12 pieces of wings with some ranch dressing. That'll sort of my problems for sure. Final hour, Matt Thomas show. How are we going to handle Yordon and his creaky knees? That's C-R-E-A-K-Y, creaky knees.
Starting point is 01:25:50 That plus Kyle Tucker does not have creaky knees. He had a home run to win the game yesterday for the Astros. And we just got an interesting tweet from a Houston rocket. Stay with us. We'll find out what that is in a moment. 157 on Sports Talk. 790. This is the Matt Thomas show.
Starting point is 01:26:19 202 on the Matt Thomas show. Final hour here on 790. Kyle Tucker joins us in 28 minutes. Ross is working on, believe it or not. Is this a current petition? You're going to give us a freebie? You don't have to. Yeah, I can.
Starting point is 01:26:41 We're playing for consolation field tickets coming up in about 50 minutes. This is one I made up. Make mayonnaise the default dressing at Waterburger. 109 signatures. I made that up. I know this is going into terrible territory. I like mustard. Yeah?
Starting point is 01:26:59 I like ketchup. Yeah. I like mayonnaise. Manez is third on the list. I'll eat it, but it's... Here's the strange part. You can do ketchup and mustard together. You can do ketchup and mayonnaise together.
Starting point is 01:27:12 You cannot do mustard and mayonnaise together. Not a good combination. I used to do that when I was a kid. I used to put... but mustard mayonnaise and ketchup and making a big swap. I can still do that, all three. Yeah. It's called, what do they call it in Step Brothers?
Starting point is 01:27:26 The something sauce, special sauce or whatever? Well, now, remember when you used to go to the convenience store and get one, like, two ounces of every drink and call it, was it, suicide? Yes, I used to do that back in the day. You can't call them suicides anymore. The fancy sauce. That's what they call it in Step Brothers. Really?
Starting point is 01:27:40 She mixes up, yeah, I think it's ketchup and mayonnaise. So if you can't do the drink suicides anymore, what are they called? just the Uber drink mixers. Can you not call it a suicide anymore? Is that politically incorrect? Yeah, it's 2020. You can't call it suicide. We used to go.
Starting point is 01:27:55 We played Little League and then go get a suicide. We would say go up to the stand. Hey, I want a bag of Doritos, a hot dog, and a suicide. Nope. Jeez. These kids are swathed. Yeah, no suicide. And no, when you're crossing your legs on the ground,
Starting point is 01:28:09 you have to call them criss cross apples sauce. Yeah. Who was it that was incensed about that? Was it an Indie? He had never heard of that. Yeah. It's Indian style for most of us, but we can't do that anymore either. My apologies to the Indians.
Starting point is 01:28:22 Yeah. All right. 713-212-5-790. You had teased us with a tweet. Oh, that's right. Who's it from? It's from Russ West 44. Oh, he plays for the Houston Rockets.
Starting point is 01:28:36 On Twitter. Go ahead. Locked in with a padlock emoji. See y'all later. What would you call this? Duce's or the. Peace sign. Or peace or the V for victory.
Starting point is 01:28:51 Okay. Hashtag, why not? Well, he does why not on every one of his tweets. And then it's a picture of him screaming. So you want me to interpret his tweet? Yes, Matthew. You're our tweet interpreter. Extraordinaire.
Starting point is 01:29:05 Say it again. Lot. Padlock emoji. Okay. In, see y'all later. Exclamation point, exclamation point, exclamation point. Deuces. emoji.
Starting point is 01:29:20 This is going to be a horrible answer. I cannot read into that whatsoever. You're asking me when he's going to play again, is what you're saying. Can you glean anything from this, Matt? No. I think if he weren't going to, if he were out for the season and this would are a bad injury, then he wouldn't tweet that. So this is good, right?
Starting point is 01:29:35 Or is he saying, see you later. I'm out for the season. No, no, no, no. He's locked in. No, he's locked in. Like, I'll see you later in the week. Right? I say, I'm going to see you Saturday.
Starting point is 01:29:45 Like, we got some good news from the treatment. Yeah, but it's always. the next day you got to wake up. Seattle's feel like those creaky knees. Is it wild? He's got a creaky quad. I read that as I'm going to be there game one. Well, he's already been ruled out.
Starting point is 01:29:59 Wow. So that's smooth. But to go along your line of thinking, maybe he says I'll be there for game two. It's what it feels like. Just, I mean, he's not saying it. Maybe he's feeling pretty good. Wouldn't it be better saying see y'all game two,
Starting point is 01:30:11 peace out, hashtag why not? Well, maybe he's not allowed to say that kind of thing because we talked about the game planning aspect of it. You don't want to give Billy Donovan, Donovan an edge. Okay. By way, we're going to go to Oklahoma City tomorrow on the show to get a perspective from their side. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:30:25 I'll be here. Yeah, but you can't give us the OKC perspective. Okay, fine. Aaron Reese from the Athletics is going to join us for some Texans chatter tomorrow at 1.30. He'll be with us every Tuesday during the course of the football season. Wonderful. However long that may be. Hopefully it's a nice 17 weeks and then some.
Starting point is 01:30:40 Hopefully. I'm trying to figure out our guest list for the fall. Yes. Because we're approaching it right now. Yes. We're normally getting hard-hitting football interviews on the reg here on Sports Talk 790. Well, we love Joel Clat, but if Joe Clat ain't calling anything, then knows any good. That's true.
Starting point is 01:30:54 You just talking about life. Now, he does. He can go on for seven minutes. Now, there is an open spot in their NFL roster because Charles Davis left Fox to go to CBS. Oh, okay. So my guess is maybe he slips in the number two spot if there's no college football. Now, the conferences that he does is Pac-12, Big 10, and Big 12. It really helps us out if he's doing nothing but Big 12 week after week.
Starting point is 01:31:18 Yeah, he's going to be locked in. Because no disrespect, but last year, I felt like he was at Michigan every week. And we don't have a huge Michigan fan base. Now he was able to talk big picture on things. Of course, well, yeah, he follows everything. It would be really cool to be able to say, hey, you're doing Texas versus Nebraska this, not in Nebraska, Kansas State this week. What are your thoughts about the game?
Starting point is 01:31:39 That kind of thing. A West Virginia Texas Tech breakdown. I'm going to say something about Texas. Let me tell you that one. Play the over. Yeah, that's true. Texas Tech. I was in Lumpic this weekend, for those that don't know,
Starting point is 01:31:51 I was... How was that? It was a good trip. The drive is just... I don't know what hell is, but I have a pretty good feeling for what it is. It's not that bad. Oh, my God. You're listening to Gunna and stuff like that.
Starting point is 01:32:03 And to you. So the time moved quickly. Oh, yeah. Although I did fell asleep for like an hour during it, but that's not here nor there. Glad I can keep you up. It's nine hours and 15 minutes. It's not ever going to be shorter than that. How much of the driving did you do?
Starting point is 01:32:15 Because I know you hate driving on road trips. I went to HICO and stopped. And then. And then he flips. I went probably 45% away. Really? Maybe 40. Okay.
Starting point is 01:32:22 Yeah. We carried it. We had a U-Haul trailer with us, too, which just sucked gas like you wouldn't believe. Oh, yeah. I know. I did pass two cars in it, though. I felt a little.
Starting point is 01:32:31 Matt. I know. It getting dicey over there. I got it to 82, like, twice. And I'm like, this thing is going to just crap out. But yeah, we did. We had a good time. But Lubbock is a way.
Starting point is 01:32:42 I always tell you this every time I go there. First of all, if I had a chance to go back in college, I would, Texas Tech will be on my short list. It's a college town, but it's got all the bells and whistles that you need. Traffic, Rossi, nothing is more than 15 minutes away. I mean nothing. That's good. They have malls, they have restaurants. You can get booze there now, right? Yes. You used to not be able to. You see the picture I took at the Walmart? Yeah, that's right. The keystones and the natural lights. I can't believe people were trying to argue with me that Natty Light is superior or keystone. No. Not that it matters. Not that, neither I'll never have one, either one ever again.
Starting point is 01:33:15 Yeah. Well, if I fall out rough times, I get a little 30-pack keystone for 18 bucks. I have to. You know me, I'm Coors Light all the way. Of course. But it was $19 for a 30-pack. That's good value right there. Hashtag value. Notice the classy high-end beers don't come in 30 packs. Nobody says sit around and have 30 of the new citrus IPA from whatever local brew there is. But I just, the kids today, like Cameron's not of age of drink yet. Hopefully he's not.
Starting point is 01:33:47 But if he is, his buddies can certainly buy where my wife went to Texas Tech and they couldn't. It was still dry at the time. They didn't have to go. Where would they have to go? Yeah. Where would they have to go? Everything's 10 minutes away. Okay.
Starting point is 01:34:00 Everything. I left his apartment yesterday at 5 to 4, 355. My flight was at 5.10. Well, how's the big at the airport? About as big as this room? It's got 6 gates, 6 7 gates. Okay. we left his apartment.
Starting point is 01:34:16 It's about an eight-mile drive. I was at the gate sitting in 20 minutes. I mean, it ain't intercontinent. I'll put it that way. That's not bad. It was really nice. But yeah, I like to love like a lot. Beautiful facilities.
Starting point is 01:34:32 They should be a lot, frankly, they should be better than what they are in athletics. Probably. I mean, I'm just saying better, not saying national champions. There's nothing holding them back from succeeding. How about that? We agree with that. But the basketball program, frankly, is way outperforming.
Starting point is 01:34:46 the football program. Well, the women's program just fired their coach for harassing everybody. I didn't say behavioral-wise. I said on with wins and losses. All right. So there's your Texas Tech update for the day. Go Red Raiders. Astros play Rockies tonight. We'll have Kyle Tucker coming up in 20 minutes. Yes. I'm very curious of what Dusty has to say at 4 o'clock today with the whole situation with Jordon Alvarez. I mentioned this to you in the noon hour. I'll ask it again. my alarm rate on this one to ten is a nine because think about this Rossi if he hardly plays and is just the DH
Starting point is 01:35:23 if he's playing every day how is he going how are those knees going to hold up without it being massively looked at scoped clean whatever wouldn't he have I mean if it was that bad it's been well it's been one day I'm just hoping he doesn't if he goes on the aisle my alarm my alarm is going to shoot So maybe he says, you know what?
Starting point is 01:35:46 He's been with the team a couple of days, wasn't used to doing all the things of being a major leaguer. Now he's fine. And then obviously we'll drop the level of concern from 9 to 0.5. Yeah, Dusty tried to downplay it, but Dusty's been downplaying every injury this year. Justin Verlander, we might throw him out in five days. Oh, he's out for the year.
Starting point is 01:36:01 Justin Verlander, trying to throw with his left arm. Oh, okay, we'll get him a chance. Dust. But we should have Dusty on Wednesday show. We're trying to do a double header of coaches in the same day. Could we get him on the same time? No, no, no, no, no, no. Have Dusty interviewed Mike and Mike interview Dusty?
Starting point is 01:36:20 Now, those two guys throw some stories back now. They got stories. Mike's 69 and Dusty 70, somewhere in that range, yeah. I bet they got some stories about the ladies back in the 70s. Sure. Mike Dentone could probably tell you about the Italian ladies. Oh, well, he married one. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:39 Model, in fact. Laurel listens to show all the time. Hi, Laurel, what's up? So he did okay. He did great. She's a great woman. We enjoyed getting to know her. Yeah, a lot of philanthropic efforts for a lot of that.
Starting point is 01:36:49 And then Dusty, I think his son is like really very actively involved in his life. I think he runs a Twitter account and tells him what's going on and whatnot. So Dusty living in a little one-bedroom apartment by the ballpark. Do you think it's decorated? Do you think Dusty's apartment's decorated? If it is, he didn't do it. For sure. But it is decorated.
Starting point is 01:37:08 Okay. Because he's 72 years, he doesn't want to stare at blank walls all day long. I was in my apartment for a year before I hung up anything. We should actually do a do a cribs of your apartment. Oh, it'll be over about 45 seconds. It's a small one-bedroom apartment. But you want to be funny if I just, we need to do that for a blog. It would be, we need some great hits.
Starting point is 01:37:29 I don't have to clean up a little bit. Well, you can still do that. That's okay. 2.13. I don't think anybody cares. On the Matt Thomas show, 713, 212-790 if you want to get in. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Rockets getting running for Oklahoma City.
Starting point is 01:37:44 Texans back at practice. Astros trying to make it now a four-game winning streak. They're over 500 for the first time in quite a while at 11 and 10. Thank you very much to Seattle. And the five victories over them, actually six victories over them in seven games this year. Summer Salletathon is going on right now at Beck and Mass and Buick GMC where they're burning up high prices to bring you massive summer savings at either one of their two locations. Starting point is 01:38:48 Wherever you are, so is Matt Thomas. 218 on the Matt Thomas show. 713-212-5-790. Kyle Tucker's going to join us in just a couple of minutes. He of the walk-off. We're going to put this sound by him of the call, right? All right. So week one of the SEA.
Starting point is 01:39:16 has been announced. They're going to announce the full schedule tonight. The SEC, for those of you don't know, they're going to play football. September, is it September 26? I'm going to remember about somewhere in that last weekend of September they're going to play. Tennessee at South Carolina. Me. Mississippi State against LSU. So Mike Leach's first game as a coach at Mississippi State's against the national champions. That should be fun.
Starting point is 01:39:42 Wonderful. Florida at Ole Miss. Kentucky. Florida. Kentucky at Auburn. Okay. Georgia and Arkansas. Alabama goes to Missouri.
Starting point is 01:39:55 I didn't think Alabama left the state of Alabama unless they had to. Normally they wouldn't like to. Not required. I guess they actually don't do it to about eight weeks into the season. And A&M with a strong, I mean, basically Hatfield versus McCoy kind of rivalry with Vanderbilt. Oof. You don't take those Commodores lightly, Matt. Yeah, you do.
Starting point is 01:40:17 Certainly not Lionel Richie. You do take them lightly. Okay. You haven't been able to take them seriously since Jake Cutler was the quarterback, right? Yeah, pretty much. Actually, it's not true. James Franklin was there, had a little run, right? Vanderbilt beat the Cougars in the Birmingham Bowl one year.
Starting point is 01:40:32 A lot of strange calls in favor the SEC, ironically enough. The nation turned its eyes to the, what was that? The Birmingham Bowl? The Birmingham Bowl. Vanderbilt versus U of H. Probably the most underrated bowl in America. Yeah, okay. Right after the ticket city bowl.
Starting point is 01:40:48 Or was it spirit of Dallas? It changes yearly. So we talked about Justin Fields earlier, the Ohio State quarterback, putting this petition up. And that's part of the reason why we're doing the believe it or not, this is a petition. So imagine what these petition people are today. Imagine what Big Ten's doing if you're a player in that conference and you are watching the SEC announce your schedule today. You're pissed. You are pissed, Ross.
Starting point is 01:41:11 You're very upset. Very mad. And you know what? You're finding, what is it? Where's the transfer portal? How's there's one step into the transfer portal? If you're trying to get drafted and you're a senior and you have eligibility, why wouldn't you try it?
Starting point is 01:41:27 Problem is. Certainly if you're, I mean, there's so many guys. You had some of the big name guys, right? I doubt it was the, it was like a Penn State linebacker. It's a hookahman running back. Yeah, something like that. So, I mean, if you're already established as an NFL prospect, it makes sense. Here's why you're going to be careful.
Starting point is 01:41:43 Because if you enter the portal and a coach comes, scoops you up, and you, you're, you take that kid spot on the team. He's been there since day one being like a kid that was that we use Mississippi State. If Mike Leach goes and grabs a receiver from Michigan and takes that dude's spot, what kind of precedent is Mike Leach setting for kids that have been Ole Miss or Mississippi State all the way through? And because his kids' conference can't play, he now joins his program. I think it's, I think it's very dangerous how frisky coaches should be in this portal during this time. Now, coaches lie all the time.
Starting point is 01:42:15 Coaches, that's what they do. They promise recruit X. You're going to start. You're going to be our guy. We need you. This other school doesn't want you. And then he comes in and comes spring. He's third on the depth chart.
Starting point is 01:42:25 I mean, it happens all the time. So coaches are, it's a lying business, quite frankly. But I think in this particular case, you have to be extra careful because it was just determined, what, 10 days ago that the Big Ten wasn't going to play. I don't even know. I can see if it was offseason, normal camp, but you're basically going, what is it, a rummage sale kind of basically that, you know, somebody's, oh, it's going on a business.
Starting point is 01:42:52 Michigan, Ohio State, Big 10 schools, Pact 12 schools are out of business for a year. And you as a coach and a that your business is still alive, you're going to peck and choose what you want with the leftovers. I'm not saying it's not going to happen. But I think it's,
Starting point is 01:43:08 you got to be careful how you do it. I don't even know that it can happen. What if I'm a player who on Ohio State's roster right now, I can't transfer right now. right now and be eligible for the regular season. I wouldn't think, right? Is that possible? I mean, I guess the question is, why can't they transfer now?
Starting point is 01:43:25 Is there a deadline where you have to transfer? That's what I'm wondering. Somebody knows the answer to let us know. Yeah. Because I don't know. Me either. Now, if they skip, now, they don't usually, they're not going to lose a year of eligibility, right?
Starting point is 01:43:40 So if you just take this year off and you still had two years left of eligibility, you could go back at Ohio State next year in the year for that and play your two years and be fine. because honestly, the difference between playing, you know, at Mississippi State as compared to playing in Ohio, it's considerable. One is a middle-the-road SEC football squad. Another one is one of the top teams year-in-year-in-year-out in the Big Ten and probably a national championship contender every year. But these are kids that are antsy and bored and probably really mad at their member institution in the conference in which they play in to say, hey, while these three other Power Five conferences are playing, we're sitting here holding our bulls. blanks in our hand not being able to play. It's tough. It sucks. It's just this is...
Starting point is 01:44:23 So I was listening to a national radio show in Lubbock yesterday, driving around before I left town. There was a mom and a dad of two different Iowa players that went on this national radio show. And they've started this petition along with Justin to beg the big 10 to play this year. Rossi, it's... What are we looking at here? August 17th. Realistically. Could they beg for four or five days and the Big Ten change its mind?
Starting point is 01:44:56 What wheels were in motion that stopped and what wheels that stopped can start back up and can it be okay? I would guess, yes. I mean, the SEC just came out with a new schedule. The schedule clearly doesn't matter. And if you're thinking about playing the last week of September, gives you still 45 days, give or take.
Starting point is 01:45:16 it would feel like to me you'd have to probably do that sometime this week. Would you have to do all inter-conference? Like how many teams are in each division? Seven. So six in division and four cross maybe or something? I don't even think you have to worry about that per se. I think you're going to worry about whether or not you're going to bother playing. I'm saying if you decide to play.
Starting point is 01:45:36 Oh, I see, I see. Because they would have to scramble. I don't know if these teams could scramble and find non-conference opponents. Brendan, do we have any response to the Big Ten about these petitions or anything? Have they said anything publicly about them? No, I don't believe. Are they going to just treat these with a deaf ear on this? Probably.
Starting point is 01:45:54 And maybe just say, look, we're trying to protect you. Yeah, I don't think this is a decision that was made lightly. So I think it would look even worse for them to reverse it after a couple of days. But it's, but it is, isn't it extremely peculiar that you've got three conferences saying we're going to do this and two that are not? And there is the big deal that they're coming out with that. What is the new test where they can, it's only $10 and it's faster and it's rapid and it's accurate? and it's accurate, it's like 90% accurate or something like that. Well, testing is one thing.
Starting point is 01:46:23 It's just getting it is what I think is what they're concerned is. Yeah, that's one of the huge things. It was one of the reasons that they, I mean, you have to pay for the test and you have to administer the tests and you have to, yeah, acquire the tests. I think it's worth mentioning the big time, I believe, was expecting to test twice a week. So if there's testing that allows them to do it more, I do think that allows you to consider reversing course. If they do it, though, Brennan, they better hurry up, right? Yeah, no, I agree. if they're going to do it late this week.
Starting point is 01:46:51 And here's the problem. You also have a first-time commissioner in the Big Ten right now. And that dude doesn't, his end of the category of been there, done that, doesn't know this. Well, first of all, none of the commissioners know that. But he's probably facing intense scrutiny because he's been hired by these presidents of these schools that are ultimately the ones that made the decision. I have a feeling we've got to get to Kyle Tucker here that this was more on the president's side than the AD side. Absolutely. It's about liability.
Starting point is 01:47:18 money. It's about avoiding lawsuits down the road. All right. Kyle Tucker is going to join us next. 227 here on Sports Talk 790 with a message for Improve Myerection.com. Maybe a silly website, but it's effective. Ask their clients. Ask their customers. Their patients that have said, yes, the folks in Improve Myerection.com have helped me out cure my ED issues. If you've got that, 281, 496, 3355. 281, 496, 3355.
Starting point is 01:47:47 You know, many of the prescription medicines that you hear on the radio, they will work for a very short period of time before they will stop working entirely. This actually happened to Dr. Rorick, who runs the clinic over at Improved Myerection.com. Pills also will not be able to address the psychological component of this issue. The Rorix will take an approach that aims to work with you to get you not only physically back to where you want to be, but mentally and emotionally as well. Do yourself a favor. Call for a free consultation, 281, 496, 33,
Starting point is 01:48:17 55. 281, 496.3355, or that website again, improve my erection.com. This is 790 baseball direct. Direct from the ballpark. To your radio. Driven by Texas Direct Auto, powered by Vroom. And Tucker hits it high in the air to right field.
Starting point is 01:48:44 It sends back more at the wall looking up. See you later. See you later. Kyle Tucker with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the night. And the Astros beat the Mariners 3 to 2. Well, you're talking about selling out for a fastball. That's what Tucker did. Middle end and he pulled it high and far to right field.
Starting point is 01:49:08 And the Astros sweep the Mariners. And the man that did that joins us right now on Sports Talk 790. Kyle, it's Matt and Ross. Congratulations. Did I hear this? Is this your first walk-off ever or just first as a major leaguer? First in the major league, yeah. Can you remember the last time you had a walk-off?
Starting point is 01:49:29 Some minor league games, maybe in the sixth grade. When was the last time you had a walk-out prior to yesterday? I remember I had, I think, one or two and 18 when we were in Fresno. And I think I had one last year in AAA. Yeah, but that score probably was like 19 to 15, right? because that AAA ball is some high-scoring games, correct? Yeah, we put up some runs back there. No question about that.
Starting point is 01:49:55 Congratulations on the effort yesterday. They said you were waiting for a fastball. Is that an accurate statement from our broadcasters yesterday? Yeah. I mean, the guy on the mound is big power arm. There's 97, I think. And, you know, I was just getting down to that. And you were able to do that.
Starting point is 01:50:15 How surreal was it to have that walk off? knowing there weren't 40,000 people screaming at the top of their lungs congratulating you. Yeah, it's definitely different without all the fans there, cheering us on and everything. But, you know, it's still a big league win, so a lot of fun. And, you know, we had a good time yesterday. So as you're circling the bases, do you hear the guys screaming in the dugout? I mean, what could you hear as you were going from base to base? When I hear it, when I hit it, I heard everyone start cheering.
Starting point is 01:50:46 And when it went out, obviously, everyone was heard. yell a little louder and piling around bases a little bit and then coming around home seeing everyone there. It was pretty cool. I was listening to the game on radio, so I didn't see it. What is a social distancing
Starting point is 01:51:02 gang dog pile feel like? I mean, did you guys separate by six feet? Did you have water thrown on you or at least maybe some ice chips or something? Oh, I think Yulee got straw with some, you know, the little ice bucket we had in there. but I mean it's not your typical, you know, a little celebration. We were a little separated, but, you know, it's still fun being out there with those guys and celebrating.
Starting point is 01:51:25 Yeah, no question about it. You've been able to get the Mariners six times so far out of the seven games. Is it because of familiarity or just that you've been able to put it all together at the right time? Yeah, I mean, the last, I think, four games, you know, we've won and, you know, we've been playing pretty well lately. So we're just trying to stick to that game plan. And we've just been playing well whenever we played them. And we're trying to keep that up. What has it been like?
Starting point is 01:51:53 You've seen yourself move up and down the order. You're in the lineup on a regular basis. It must be just from a pure selfish standpoint, much more fun to walk in the clubhouse and see your name on the scorecard every single day. Yeah, I mean, that's what everyone wants is to just get an opportunity to play in the game. and I mean, our team's so talented, and, you know, everyone one through nine in the lineup can do damage. And I don't really necessarily care where I'm at in this lineup.
Starting point is 01:52:21 You know, everyone can do their part and help the team once. Is there a different mindset or what is it if you're batting in the front or as compared to the back of the lineup? Do you prepare yourself any differently? I mean, I got that, you know, same game plan, whether I'm hitting second, third, fifth, third, eighth. I mean, you still got to go up there and hit the guy on the mound. But, I mean, that's just how I approach it. You know, it doesn't really matter from that first or last. You know, you just got to go up there and do your job.
Starting point is 01:52:52 Are you hearing much conversation between pitcher and catcher because there's obviously no fans around? And I know the craw noise that the amp in there a little bit tries to do a little bit here and there. But can you hear the relationship between those two guys more so than if it was a regular game? No. I mean, I don't hear him. you know, whether there's 40,000 people in the sands or zero. You know, they might talk a little softer or whatever now,
Starting point is 01:53:18 but I mean, that's just between them too. You can't really hear that. How about just the game atmosphere in itself? I'm assuming by at this point, everybody's fully adjusted to it. What are some of the nuances of playing in front of no one that you never would have expected and now you're experiencing on a daily basis? Yeah, I mean, it's just different. I mean, without, you know, a packed stadium cheering us on from the first pitch to the end.
Starting point is 01:53:46 I mean, you know, in Houston, you know, the fans are always on their feet cheering us on, and it gets real loud in there. And now we just have the recording of, you know, the fans cheering and whatnot. They'll turn it up a little bit in some situations, but it's not the same as having everyone there screaming. That's for sure. Kyle Tucker with us here on the Matt Thomas show. Kyle, the biggest adjustment I've talked to with young players, especially from the left side of the plate, is going against left-handed pitching. You've now seen perhaps more of it now at the major league level than you ever had before.
Starting point is 01:54:18 What's that like for you? Do they present, as Brig of a challenge, as a lot of great left-handers have said that it's so difficult to have success against lefties? Me personally, I don't really have a problem hitting lefties. I kind of like it. But I think that the reasoning for that is, you know, when I was growing up, my brother, he's a lefty, and we would always play with a ball in the backyard, and he would always pitch. So I think I just got used to that now.
Starting point is 01:54:50 Whenever I face the lefties, it doesn't really matter. You know, there's a right-year left-de-on-the-mount. I try and just do my job and, you know, get some hits. So every time you hit a home run against the left, the person's going to text you and say it was because of me, right? Probably. I'm probably expecting that now. Is he still playing over in Korea? area right now? Yeah, yeah, he's over there playing. I think they played over half their season.
Starting point is 01:55:13 I think they're around 80-ish games or so. But, you know, they got about two months left, I believe. But, you know, he's doing well. They're having a good time over there. I think they started allowing a couple fans in. I don't really know that. But, you know, he's having a good time with it, and he's doing well. Are you DVRing his games, or are you just waiting for his reports from him himself? I mean, I'll say time them every now and then and see I was going and talk to him, but I'll also look at the stats and try and watch a couple of ADs whenever I can. So I stay up-to-date with him. Kyle Tucker here on the Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 01:55:49 Kyle, we're getting to meet a lot of your pitchers really for the first time because they're so young and they weren't really on the radar because of injuries and whatnot. You've known these guys, I think, a little bit through your time of the minor leagues. tell me about a couple of stories if you have any about who's making some impact for you guys that maybe just six months ago you guys were talking about days in the Mono Leagues. I mean, I don't know if you knew
Starting point is 01:56:10 Blake Taylor very much or scrub or any of those guys, but these are young men that are, we're just in the minor leagues a handful of months ago and now they're trying to help you get Major League outs. Yeah, I mean, they've done a tremendous job, you know, coming out of the bullpen and starting some games and
Starting point is 01:56:26 you know, really helping us out with some of the injuries we've had. But I mean, some of these guys, you know, they were in A ball last year, double A. I mean, they've really stepped up to, you know, come up and, you know, just start the season in the big leagues and start having to pitch a lot and, you know, coming up in some big situations and doing their job. And, you know, I mean, I can't complain. They've all done really well. And they're great guys and, you know, happy to have them on my team. Do they come to you guys for advice much?
Starting point is 01:56:55 Or is it because the situation in this season is so freaky and no one has experienced it is hard to give advice. when you're trying to play 60 games in 66 days in a stadium that's got no fans in it? Yeah. I mean, I'm sure some of the older pitchers have been around for a little while to help them out some and try and get them used to what they should, you know, approach the game with and everything. And, I mean, it's a little different.
Starting point is 01:57:22 You know, they come in to pitch, you know, you don't have the, you know, 40,000 people screaming, watching right there. But, you know, they're watching. watching on the TV and, you know, those guys just go out there and do their job. You know, whether there's no one in the stands or a ton of people in the stands, they'll do just fine. Last question for you, Kyle. You guys have been on one road trip so far.
Starting point is 01:57:42 You're going to go to Colorado after the game tomorrow. Under normal circumstances, are you a guy that likes to run around the city a little bit, go to some restaurants, go shopping, or do you kind of keep to yourself in the room? I typically just hang out and, you know, try and stay in the room and whatnot. But I'll go out. If it's a cool city or I have some family in town and, you know, I haven't been there before. I'll try and go do a little bit. But if I'm just there by myself, I'll try and just rest up for the game the next day.
Starting point is 01:58:13 That's the only thing that sucks in my opinion for you guys is that all your road trips this year are to really cool places. I mean, you're not going to like Milwaukee and Cleveland. You're going to be in Denver and San Diego and you were in San Francisco before that, L.A. I mean, these are some fun spots. So I applaud your discipline because I know it can't be easy. But we wish you the very best luck tonight, and the road trip coming up, and we appreciate it coming out on the show this afternoon.
Starting point is 01:58:35 Awesome. Thanks for having me. You got it, I'll appreciate it. Kyle Tucker, the Houston Astros, with us here on Sports Talk 790. We're back to play, believe it or not, for a chance to win some tickets to see some baseball and consolation field. 242 on Sports Talk 790, and I want to welcome a brand-new friend of the 790 family
Starting point is 01:58:53 that's Big Rivers Water Park. When I was a kid, Waterworld was my first. my jam. And there are some other places that you guys have gone to, but I want to tell you about a new place up along 59, just north of Kingwood. It's basically new Caney. So just the next town right north on 59. Big Rivers Water Park. They're open in weekends through the month of August and September. They'll go from 1030 to 6 or 11 o'clock until 5 in September. It's really affordable. Day passes start as low as 2499. And not only are you going to have great water slides. They've got the largest lazy river in the Houston area.
Starting point is 01:59:28 They've got a lot of fun things to do water-related. But then they want to offer you more. They have some of the longest zip lines in the state of Texas. So you get to do that too. Or how about going on a 70-foot high fall tower? They have that too. They have a petting zoo. They have a great maze.
Starting point is 01:59:48 So it's really something for a days full of entertainment, whether you are 6, 16, or 36. And again, these passes to Big Rivers Waterpark start as low as 2499. Open in August, Saturday and Sundays 10.306, September's they go weekends, 11 o'clock until 5. For a great day of visit, both in the water and out, I want you think of only one place. Big Riverswaterpark in the website. Big Riverswaterpark.com. This is the Matt Thomas Show. Matt Thomas.
Starting point is 02:00:19 On Sports Talk 790. We do not feel the thunder here on. on 790. Thunder? And the thunder? See, every time you play that, you come up with that. You don't say, hey, Matt, this song sucks, too. I agree with you. You always do the thunder, whatever that stupid I think.
Starting point is 02:00:41 And the thunder? Presumably there is also lightning. Please don't play that anymore. I know it's my show and I don't get a vote on the music for some reason. Although we found out the classic rock is very well here. We're not going straight Fanolo. We could, but we won't. Okay.
Starting point is 02:00:59 So tomorrow on the show, you ready for a schizophrenic Tuesday edition of the Matt Thomas show? You and I will entertain the masses between noon and well, the tens between noon and one. The thousands and thousands and thousands of Matt Thomas show listeners. And then you, then I will leave you for 35 minutes. Yes. To go do Astros. Okay. Then I will come back.
Starting point is 02:01:19 Okay. And then you and I will finish up the show at 135 to 3 o'clock. Okay. We will have Aaron Rees during the show tomorrow, Texans Insider from The Athletic. And I'll play that later on the Rock of Rockets Launchpad. That's not possible. I'll have a breakdown of the Thunder series. Probably not.
Starting point is 02:01:34 And then we will hopefully have a member of the OKC Media on the show sometime tomorrow as well. Oh, okay. What? Yeah. Why'd you raise your eyes? I'm just planning my launch pad in my head, Matt. Oh, I'm helping you out. I'm a Mr. Show Prep, man.
Starting point is 02:01:50 I prep days in advance. And that'll be on at two. The launch pads at 4.30. Oh, that's one of a time. Separation by 20. Launchpad's getting written from 3 to 430. So that's tomorrow. So we've got a busy day.
Starting point is 02:02:04 We've got Astros on KTRH tomorrow. Yes. Will they be here on 790 tonight. And then the Rockets will be here on 790 tomorrow for a 530 tip. Yes. And we should give the public service announcement yet again. If you're looking for the Astros and you don't hear them here, or if you're looking for the Rockets, you don't hear them here, they're probably on 740.
Starting point is 02:02:19 It's one or the other. We slip them a lot because of there's, we've got to take care of Michael Berry. We've got to take care of different things that are happening on the weekend. So sometimes one's on the other and one's here. usually if it's not every time. If it's not 790, check 740. I would never check Sunday 99.1. Not usually.
Starting point is 02:02:37 Although a couple of years ago, we had a game on Sunny. Yeah, it was strange. It was Saturday Night for the Rockets on Sunny. Yeah, you called the game with Dana Tyson. I did not. Oh. She might have wanted to. That would be cool.
Starting point is 02:02:48 She could have said really nice things about all the players, or you get Delilah on there. What a lovely basket from James Hardin. That really warms my heart. do you want a soothing massage back rub and just good tidings James Hardin it's me here Delilah yes in the middle of a you're calling the game
Starting point is 02:03:09 and she starts reading a letter from a military wife no it's a Hardin left corner to Westbrook he'll spot up hit a quarter three and it's good and the rockets are up 11 Delilah what do you got well I've got Marcy in the line here from Yakima Washington what's going on Darcy well Delilah I just really miss my boy. Well, back to Matt for the call.
Starting point is 02:03:28 Yes. We could mix Delilah calls in with My Play-by-Play. I think it'd be fantastic, Matt. So Craig will have games one and two on the radio. I'll have three and four. On Sunny 99.1. No, it'll be on, no, don't confuse the audience already. Sunny, 99.1. Not your home for Rockets basketball. Okay. Or the Astros.
Starting point is 02:03:50 And ratings are doing quite well, though. Who's? Sunny. Do you know the Sunny used to carry the older games? What? Yep. Absolutely 100%. Who was on the call for those? Tom Franklin? Jerry Truppiano.
Starting point is 02:04:02 Oh. Did Tom Franklin ever used to do those? Not on Sunny. Okay. But on KTRH, yeah. All right. And they were on KLO for a while, too. But, yeah, it used to be the Cota Oilers Radio Network with Jerry Truppiano. Interesting.
Starting point is 02:04:16 I mean, and they played the same music. It wasn't like they were something different. Yeah. So a little radio history for Houston. Matt is a Radio Houston who is this historian. I've grown up here. So I grew up here. I knew everything that was going on.
Starting point is 02:04:28 I'll go back to Dallas. Yeah, I'm going to. Five minutes off in the show. What should we do? We should play America's fastest-growing sports game show. We simply called it Believe it or not. And here's how it works. You'll call 713-212-5-790.
