10.1 in H-Town. Good morning and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross here on Sports Talk 790 alongside Rossville. I'm Matt Thomas. We had a nice little 10 o'clock open for you, but our computers are freezing. So when they thaw out, we will play it for you. I see what you did there. Because it's a good song. It's an 80s early jam. Uh-huh. And it rips on one of our least favorite cities in America. I thought you loved L.A. I do love L.A. I don't know what I said that. I just don't like Dodger fan. Dodger fan's the worst. Dodger Stadium is amazing.

Dodger Stadium traffic is the antichrist. Take the shuttle bus. No. That's what I did. Shuttle bus bad, Uber bad, Lyft bad. Oh, lift. Taxi terrible. Your own car, awful.

Rickshaw. Yeah. Winnebago. Double-decker bus. Yeah, you could pull up in the Winnibego. Like a weekend of it. Just sleep in the parking lot and I just didn't even be cheaper than the hotels, that's for sure. Well, there's people sleeping in there.

Yeah. I'm doing other things. Last time you spent the night in a Winnebago. Probably when I was very, very young. I've spent nights in tents. For me, was October of 2005. You know, last time I was in an RV. Yeah, with me.

That's correct. Yeah. We were filming Thelman-Louis videos. ESPN went to. Salt Lake City for the first time ever for Game Day. This is when the Utah youths were going undefeated. We had Urban Myers the coach

who was there a couple years and he jettisoned off to Florida but that's a different issue for a different time. And so game day came and we said we're going to spend the night in the parking lot and we did. Oh, that's cool. You got a good spot? We had a big station event. We got a big screen TV and we were like we're going to spend the whole night

there. We're going to cook eat. Some of us would drink. Some of us would not. It did it Salt Lake City. and we put the game on. There was the Indiana-D Detroit game was on. The Malice and the Palace happened right in the parking lot. I remember watching that. And they played it on ESPN like 75 times that night.

Because I knew. You're just sitting there in disbelief like, oh, my God. They're playing it again and I'm watching it again. Yeah, that's exactly what it was. So, yeah, that was, I'll never forget that night. Malice in the palace the same night as us spinning. We got up the next morning early and then we were on ESPN game day. It was fun.

Mm-hmm. And kicked the crap out of BYU, so it was all good. Utah Ute's fever. it. And they're doing okay. I guess. Fellow back, 12 brethren?

Or a big 12 brother. Yeah. That's right. It's confusing. Hey, what a wonderful weekend sports wise. What an awful weekend for our friends in the Hill country. I'm sure somebody, it's when the sound of her voice has been impacted somehow some way by this. Even if you haven't.

They're there, but they're in a safe house and everything. But they just couldn't do it because the waters were just too high. Crazy. Yeah. On a much more, an extremely much more lighthearted note, the local nine went to Los Angeles. And I've been thinking about this all weekend, Ross. Okay. I've been doing this Houston radio bit for a long time. You're a veteran of the biz, man. I'm a veteran of the biz. I don't know if I've been more startled than any one singular sports team in the history. me talking about Houston sports teams.

And I'll just give you examples. It would be like a team, and maybe there are teams that have been discussed at least Houston-wise, that were projected to win, for instance, order slash Texans, a team that was projected to go 12 and 5 or 11 and 5, whatever they least place 16, and they wound up winning 3. A rocket team that was projected to win 53 that won 24. or a Astros team that was projected to go 100, win 96, it won up winning 66. So using that as kind of a parameter, if you would have told me the Astros are 20 games above 500 at any point in the 2025 season, with all the pitchers that went on the injured list before the season even started, not knowing what your bullpen was going to be frankly leaving training camp

yes having no Kyle Tucker no Alex Spregman no Yordon well Yordon was playing but you know well he was terrible he was terrible didn't hurt and something called Cam Smith who just made the roster after being in the college world series or playoffs a year beforehand. You'd have told me in early July there will be 20 games over 500.

I would have had you B-slot me. Open hand. It's incredible. And as you laid it out, I did think of one possible comparison. I hope you can find one. Remember the Rockets 22-game win streak in 2008? That was one of those like,

what is happening? How are they doing this? Either was it, Yao, I think, was hurt in the middle of it. I think by the end of it, both Tracy McGrady and Yao were hurt, maybe. I mean, which was always happening during that era anyways. They did a documentary about the 20-game streak. Yeah, the 22-game win streak, I remember like, what is this? How is this happening?

How does this continue to happen? That's the only thing that can kind of come to my mind that comes close. But, yeah, the way that they just continue to exceed expectations, despite everything that you laid out that's going against them. Now, of course, they've had some help. There are some things before Jeremy Pena go, went down. He was incredible. Esoc Paredes is having a really good season.

I don't even know. Zed? Yeah. I don't know if he's from the old west. Zach oriah. But point being is that I would feel terrible if I would have guessed wrong. Okay. So I just went and short said,

stop batting ninth? Yes. I didn't know his first name. Yeah, he'd been called him a couple days before. I heard his name, but previously, but I'd have said out of mind. I mean, he's like, you would have thought he was the Cesar Saddazar. I mean, he was basically. Basically not going to play just occupying a spot.

Like, like Shane Whitcomb has done for the most part. He's just been hanging out. Yeah, not playing. Hanging on the 40 men, eating good meals. He's getting a lot of batting practice in. So, you know, it's what it is. Yeah, called up on. with the Guillermo going down.

Luis Guillaume. Zach Short had three hits yesterday. Zach Short. Again, 219 AAA hitting Zach Short. It wasn't like he was crushing at any levels of the minor leagues. He is a journeyman at the very best. Probably a guest tomorrow on the A team.

Mike would be a chalk pick on that. It's all right. He's a good story, Matt. Yeah. It's a great story. Good interviews can make a good interviewers can make a good interview. He was on with Julia yesterday, as a matter of fact.

Okay. So, Zach freaking short's got three hits. Taylor Trammell, who can't hit, made a terrific play in center field after replacing Jake Myers last night. And Taylor Trammell's actually played up some pretty good outfit. Again, he can't hit a lick, but that's another here nor there. That's all right. I mean, he's not playing a whole lot.

Does it count as a left-headed bat if it can't hit? Yeah, that's not the left-headed bat. So here's Taylor Trammell. Well, he doesn't have a good bat. ball to second base is slow roller and I mean a slow roller. If you need a left-handed bat in the woods and the bat can't hit, is it a bat?

It's ORL, for those of you playing at home. Are you a fan of oral? Yes. I liked him as a player. That's the guy that was talking about Astros are cheating? He had, how many innings was his story? Wasn't it in the 80s or something? It's been so long, I don't remember.

But he was a guy that absolutely caused a young Matt Thomas a lot of heartache because he'd come in here with the Dodgers and beat the Astros of the Dome many a time. And he at one point had the longest, is it still the longest streak of? 59, I wasn't close. Yeah, that's fine. What are you going to do? Whatever. It was the 90s.

Yeah. Does he still on the longest hitless score to streak? Yes, 59 consecutive innings. That's pretty great. He's crazy. 59 innings not giving up a run. Yeah, that's insane. So, yeah, Oral does the TV for the Dodgers. And he's a whiner.

Put his foot in his mouth. And I know what he was trying to say. For those who don't know, we're trying to paraphrase it. He basically alluded to the fact that the Astros were pounding anybody that was throwing pitches for the Dodgers. He says, I don't want to bring up an old wound. Specifically breaking balls he was referencing. Yeah, it looked like the Astros knew what was coming. which could be tipping a pitch's

which could be very of course but he wasn't alluding to tipping a pitch he was alluding to that the asteros were cheating him so I'm sorry you have to know that while your Dodger television fan base probably went nice good chuckle on you have the audio here it is

a matter of fact let's let you hear what Oral had to say Friday after the Astros or during the Astros beat down the Dodgers feels like you've stumbled on the right thing because even veterans have slumps it hard to deep center field pahez on the wall it's trying to watch this one wedge itself in the bottom of the wall and cams smith flying into second anchoring there with another extra base hit for the astros double homer double so open third against casperius i don't want to open an old

long but in some ways they're swinging at these breaking balls like they know what it's coming these are that is not a bad pitch it's really a very good pitch That's funny. All right. So the reality is, well, again, Dodger TV fan is chuckling over this. Astro fan found out about it in one second and annihilated its oral, Hersheiser. And frankly, America annihilated him. Awful announcing is a website and a Twitter account that takes audio of every broadcast.

So if anything controversial or crazy is said, even on a local broadcast, they're going to catch it, send it off. and they've got quite a following. And they're like, Oral, amazing, awful announcement, it's like, what are you doing? Why would you open yourself up to that? It's ridiculous. If Oral's getting the hate,

then you know what? You said it. Has he made any further comment? I don't know. He didn't work Saturday. And then Sunday, I don't know what was going on. But, I mean, it would be like, I mean, I don't know.

If I was doing a Rockets broadcast, Ross of something and I brought up something from yesteryear that would have eight years ago at this point yeah I mean eight years I just think sometimes and they're on the road

yeah well even so even all that sometimes you have things that you would like to throw in a broadcast that you just bite your tongue and go you know what I don't think I want to go viral with this unless I really really truly believe what I'm saying and you know that

all Hirschizer even from what he said, you know he didn't mean it. He was just doing it to get Dodger, L.A. fan to appreciate him. I don't know his style. I don't know, I don't know, I mean, if he was trolling. Remember when the Dave Raymond thing went viral and we knew

he was trolling because we know Dave Raymond? We know Dave. But I don't know how serious he was being. I just... It sounds like he's being pretty serious. It sounds like he's being serious. And more importantly, you know that it was going

to trigger a group of people. And it triggered all the baseball for at least that night. It triggered national folks going, Oral, are you serious? You're really going to go to this? It triggered Astro fans. And it clearly probably positively said, yeah, no wonder our Dodgers are getting their ass kicked at home.

We don't ever lose like this. And it's like he's saying it to appease the audience because he knows who he has and make him feel better. You just, because I'll be brutally honest with you. it's very difficult for me as a play-by-play announcer for the Rockets to talk about Dremont Green. And so sometimes I really have to bite my tongue. And I think Dremont Green is an excellent basketball player.

I think Dremont Green is a generational talent in some respects about the way he positions and plays the game. But he's also generational in terms of the absolute horrific non-basket non-sportsmanship angles he puts to the way he treats officials and what he gets away with.

The amount of hitting of players and cheap shots. And trying to injure them. And trying to injure them. So just watching him work, and especially as I was calling a seven-game series with the Golden State Warriors, you really, really want to just let it out, but you just don't.

So I didn't. You can't call him a D-bag in the middle of the call. I don't think. I think I can. Well, you could, but again, I don't want to be on awful. I don't, well, I mean, I don't mean I'd be out of a job, but I don't, I don't, my thought is I want to be, if I'm ever going to go viral something, I want to be something funny. I've gone viral in my life for one thing. And it was when I announced the Golden State Warrior lineup.

Yes. Even if I'm thinking of anything else. That's it. I'm very pleased of that. If that's the one only thing I've got, unless you do something, you manipulate something. Until that arrest record gets out. Stop. My point is that that was funny and interesting.

interesting and lighthearted and it was not meant as a malicious attempt to downgrade. It was just, you know what, they're in our building. It was game seven. I wanted them to lose and I just want to let them know that I didn't care for who they were. Yeah. Also, you've been doing that all year. It's funny how sometimes. Yeah, that's right.

The weirdest most innocuous thing or something that you've been doing forever goes viral. So that's my point. The least, the fewer times I can go viral in my life, the better. That's the opposite, I think. Mm-mm. Not in 2025. No, in 2025. There are people out there supporting Diddy and like marching for him outside of the courthouse.

Exactly. I will tell you one thing that. And as you said, Did he did what, Matt? What do you diggling back over there for? You missed the Thursday open. Yeah, we did the Friday open on Thursday. You did not. And then the whole show, I thought it was Friday.

So I didn't tease. I didn't tease, I just don't get it. I didn't tease Brian McTaggart because we did the Friday open. and it was like a holiday Thursday, so I was in Friday mode. So I did the worst job in radio history of teasing ahead on Friday. And you allowed this to happen, Jonathan? It was kind of funny. It was literally the 1050s break.

He goes, are we doing McTaggart here? I was like, oh my God. You didn't mention him a single time. No, I didn't mention him once. How long have you been in this business? 16 years. That's what I thought. You disappoint me so.

Hey, I don't know which one is sweeter when the Astro sweep the Dodgers or sweep the Yankees, but I just had to call and get this off my chest to tell Oral Hirschizer to shut his bomb ass up. Like, what? Let it go, dude. Let it go. Let it go. Like the Astros, like, they're just, they own you.

They're better than you. It is what it is. I don't know if yesterday was bring your broom to work day or what, but I hope he enjoyed this Astro sweep on his flight to Milwaukee last night. A team comes in and sweeps him. And the Friday loss was the worst home loss in Dodgers Stadium history. In one of the story, isn't it the third oldest after Wrigley and Fenway? Yeah. It's the third oldest stadium in baseball. So great. So amazing. So Friday night was obviously July 4th.

And they had 50 something thousand people there. Yes. This is the best part. And they came in part because the Dodgers do a really good fireworks display. I have been to a July 4th at Dodger Stadium. I know from experience how good it is. And they let fans on the field. So everybody wanted to get on the field. Yeah.

So if you want to get on the field and you want to see this amazing fireworks display, and remember it's in Chavez Ravine, so it's kind of surrounded by hills and mountains. So you couldn't be just strolling along one of the interstates and catch it. You're going to be kind of in a little valley there. You had to stick around to watch that ass beaten. Mm.

Mm. Mm. That's what we were trying to figure that out when we were watching the game. It was like, man, this place says, clearing out at all. I was like, oh, there's fireworks. And it was full the whole time. They just had to watch. Did you also...

Home run after home run. Did you also see that the Rockies and the White Sox played each other in Denver this weekend? Yeah, they had $48,000. 48 for that bad boy, because guess what? Major League Baseball teams, by and large, do nice jobs on fireworks. Mm-hmm. And you had two teams... You had two teams that combined for over 100 losses.

And they had $48,000 in the building. fireworks are crazy fireworks that's kind of and I just don't get it maybe I'll bring it up on Thursday no no no I will say this I mean I get it but I love fireworks as long as they're far away

from me or anybody of my family or my house the professional ones I'm with you as well because I can tell you this there is nothing better than being in a ballpark or at a concert and knowing that the fireworks

are done by professionals and you put good music behind it it's fun Yeah. Lee Greenwood's revenues going up. Sparklers, the you know the ones that you put in the middle of your streets that could hit somebody's tree and then cause a flash fire. Not a big fan of those.

And my dogs, you know what I did on Friday night after the Astros game? You put dog-eat earmuffs on them? The dogs are in our bed. And thankfully, it wasn't too bad because it rained all day. So it was kind of, it was not as much energy for fireworks. I feel like I didn't hear as much firework activity as normal. For sure. Let's go to Chris in Jersey Village at 1038.

Hi, Chris. Yeah, hey guys. Good morning. Great weekend of watching Astros baseball. I listened to it on my I-Heart radio up in Huntsville as I was camping. Man, I could not believe what I was here on Friday night with the 18 runs. It's just, man, they are really, I said they were overachieving about three weeks ago. Now I think this is just who they are.

Espada is just a great coach. He's got a great demeanor. to get a team like this through what they've gotten what they've had to go through with all the injuries and um just want to say uh congrats to him and uh also about the all-star game i believe this is pania's first all-star appearance yeah so congrats to him and the other two guys that made it but uh i wanted to hear from the president of the jake myers fan club himself about how he feels about jake getting snubbed. I mean, I just think the voting is a joke. It's obviously a popularity contest, but Jake is definitely deserving of it. So, you know, we all, I'm glad he's not going. I personally

think that that injury, Jake suffered a couple years ago. It took all of last year for him to really get back on his feet and trust his body because he throws his body around the center field like nobody's business. And this year, we're just seeing what we saw before the injury. So what do you got to say about Jake getting snubbed, Ross. Yeah, you're right. I'm also petitioning for him to already be inducted into the Hall of Fame to waive the five years and have active player in there as well. Well, he might

become the first Astro Hall of Famer to be inducted while still playing for the Astros. That's what I'm hoping for. But no. Okay, I'm looking, I know the All-Star starters. Who are the All-Star Outfield Reserves? Buxton, Kwan, Julio, Rodriguez.

No, Jake does. Jake's not making that cut. I'm sorry. I do appreciate Jake, and I think he's great, and he's having a fantastic season. So here's the problem. Average is good.

You are definitely an older basketball team. Fred's a year older. Durant's 37. Doran Finney Smith's been the league 10 years. So there could be, you know,

you're, you basically brought Clint Capella in to supplement when Stephen Adams can't play. Yes. So you are basically super old at the top, not the Fred's super old, but older. And you're still, you got some babies at the bottom. But of all, you know what I mean? Baby bottoms. It's, no, I know what you're saying. It's, yeah.

And the team is extremely deep. So that's what I think is also going to help them. You're missing some of the value, the 82 game value that you had, but you also have, I think, a deeper roster. Yeah. For sure, this team is significantly deeper

You know that. I know. I know. Hey, now as official rocket broadcasters, we can freely talk about all the moves that were made, my friend. So let's go piece by piece on this. The Kevin Durant talk never really ever went away. And it got piping hot as the offseason began.

when you were hearing the name, you obviously are very encouraged, one of the greatest players of all time, but now put in perspective, how does he fit as a Houston Rocket, in your opinion? I think he fits beautifully, Matt, because the one thing that we know is E-Mays built a culture that will not waver

for a player or a poor mindset as a whole organization, everybody's on the same page. And the reason I say that is you're not going to you're not looking at kevin durand at this stage's career and saying kevin durant go go in you know score 50 points a night going you know average seven assists go be a playmaker you want kevin durant to be kevin durant and that's score the basketball he brings uh championship experience he brings lint to this double big lineup that we saw

so much success with uh he's already had a rapport with jabari in the office offseason and he's a guy that you're excited about what he can become because his work ethic and his mindset. But the Houston group, which was top of the league in defense, top of the league in rebounding, struggled in a half court to score if they can't manufacture points with their defense, you got a guy who can manufacture his own offense. So that's the excitement there to join this group that has already built something that was second in the West last season.

All right. So who takes over the moxie part of the Dylan Brooks loss to the Phoenix Sons? And again, one of the things that Ross and I have talked about is say what you all about Jalen. And obviously Jalen was at or near the top of scoring for the Rockets all season long. And he also played 82. It feels like all these acquisitions, Doreen Phenny Smith, Clint Capel, the re-signing of Stephen Adams, obviously Kevin Durant.

No one expects these guys to go full 82. But you're replacing two guys that gave you as many minutes as anybody on the Rocket's team. team last season? Yeah, well, I think it's key, obviously, man. It really, really hurts losing Dylan and Jalen and Jalen and Jop. But what Rafael did is he addressed means, okay? So I envision, this is not from the coaches staff or anybody, that Finney Smith can play that Dylan Brooks role as obviously he doesn't have the energy,

but he brings the size, he can defend, he can shoot the three. I think he could be the long-term starter in that position because you're right, Matt, that's a lot of minutes at the two and three spot that are missing. And you'd assume, hey, Kevin Durant, you're going to want him for the playoffs. He may not play in a huge amount of minutes. You know, you're not necessarily looking at 82 games. The importance for Kevin Durant is in the playoffs. So, Finney Smith was a huge signing.

And I think everybody overlooked that because they didn't see, as you noted, Matt, the importance of Dylan Brooks and Jalen Green and their availability and how hard they played and the energy and effort. And, you know, Finney Smith is, he's one of those guys. And that's why the Lakers were so upset that they couldn't sign him and he ends up getting away. Ross with you here as well, Ryan, and a lot of talk has been had about the starting lineup. How do you see it configured? Do you think it'll be, you know, we saw it for stretches last year to where Coach Udoka would make it very matchup dependent.

And it wasn't the same five every time. Do you think it'll be more of the same? Absolutely. I can see that. Obviously, you can pinch to Shingoon, Durant, Van Vleet, as starters. And I think this is my opinion. I thought, and I'm in Thompson as a starter, obviously. But I think the gold that we found towards the end of last season, Ross, and Ross, I know Matt thinks you're crazy, but I think you're going to agree with me on this, okay?

You're going to agree with me. I think Jabari come up the bench was such a cheat code. because he can sub in at center and you get really fast and really small, or he can sub in, you know, and you get this jumbo lineup for one of the guards and go big. Or let's say Durant sits out or, you know, Finney Smith or whoever misses a game, he subs right in because for most of the time here with the Rockets, he was a starter and he won't miss a beat. So I think the goal would be, you know, just the versatility of Jabari Smith Jr. and that's why Houston went out and extended him and really put faith in him.

And I think even the urgency for the Durant, it wasn't just for Durant. It's because, hey, we got this young star in Jabari Smith, Jr. That we believe in. I think it showed a lot of faith in him. Yeah, I would agree. I think Coach Udoka values his versatility, like you said, guarding basically one through five on switches and using him in any number of different ways. He's so matchup dependent.

But he can help you. He's like a great tool to have in the toolbox for email. Edoca and as will Kevin Durant be and kind of how much do you think about this offense and the way that it's going to flow to where one of the good things about the offense last year was while it was Jalen Green

sometimes Alper and Shungoon there was a lot of equality with guys getting looks and stuff like that and with Kevin Durant who you got to be that kind of ISO alpha dog but you don't necessarily want to build your offense around that yeah and again I think the biggest

thing is like you know Kevin Durant spot up and shoot. You know, we're going to, we're a guy we can run offense and some sets through, but Shinggoon was double-teamed for season long. And the times he didn't get double-team, he tried. He absolutely fried. And

even in the playoffs, he was, he was successful. You know, just being put in and a hand, so now you're saying, you can't help off Durant. You can't help off, you know, Finney Smith, he's a good shooter from out there, and that just changes the offense. And then

I listen, man, there's the great Jim Herrick, UCLA champ, 95 coach. He had the same. He was saying, you guys would love this. He goes, he goes, it's not about the X's and O's. It's about the Jimneys and Joe's, okay? So it's about the players, okay? So when all else fails, you get the ball to Kevin Rand, and you get out the way, Matt, Thomas.

Who was your favorite player on the 1995 UCLA championship team? Edel Benon. Edel Bennett. Come on, man. Ed O. Adol Bannon is a legend to this day, and we see all this NIL stuff going on, and that is because of his impact and the things that he went out and fought for, and he'd be a multi-millionaire if this is his NIL era. Who had some key free throws for UCLA in a tournament game way back in the day? I can't remember who it was, who it was. Oh, you're talking. Oh, you're talking so maddy. You're talking so maddy. You know how to talk about it. Oh, okay. It was right, Hyatt. It was right, Hyatt. Ryan's with the Space City Home Network.

We are so happy that we're able to openly discuss now the moves. Give me some, look, I've been telling the audience, during Finney Smith, his three-point percentage has gotten better every year. He was an assassin against the Rockets, the last two times the Rockets played them. Give me a thought or two about him and about what Clint Capella is going to bring to the mix as well. I love his game. Finney Smith was a guy that's been on Houston's radar for the way that he defends. I thought that one of the biggest moves in getting him

showed a real commitment to what E-May would like to do. He's got size. So if you go with five big, versatile guys on the floor, he fits. He plays extremely hard. And again, he fits culture. I thought that it was a culture move. That was big in saying, hey, we're committed to the way that we played last year, which is huge.

You know, and all of a sudden Houston shows up with all these three-point shooters or offensive specialists. I think we'd be in trouble, but keeping the bones of us there. It's funny, I said this the other day. I said, you know, Houston hasn't had a threat like Clint Capella since Clint Capella, a guy who's extraordinary at rolling to the rim, blocking shots and commanding defense. And that defense was one of the tops in the NBA off of just ball pressure and walling up on the weak side and not really having a shot blocking presence inside.

Steven Adams brought that towards the end, but, you know, he was trying to, he was still kind of working his way back getting healthy. So, Mike Capella, they're going to clean up a lot of mistakes from the guards, and that ends up getting scary, you know? And then with Clint, he's had some injuries problems in the past, we'll be honest. But the goal is, him and Stephen Adams can try to play one game on, one game off. Right. And you get really, really good play at the five position. And then there's a commitment to that double big lineup that was so big and really featuring our Prince of Ngoon. All right. Last question for your, Rai. Size up the Western Conference, notably Oklahoma City. I don't even count the Lakers, honestly, unless Luca becomes completely different. Denver, Minnesota. I mean, tell me how sick this is going to be covering these Western Conference teams this year.

It's sick because you get essentially all the teams back and then you get a number of acquisitions. Denver, I mean, Denver scares me in some ways. Just. as much as Oklahoma City does because Cam Johnson was a huge acquisition. They get healthier and they get younger. And I think that they definitely improve. They got the best player on the planet

undisputedly and Napoleon Yolkich over there. But the Western Conference, man, it is as thick as they come. And I thought the biggest thing that impressed me about Houston is like they went out and at some point during the season beat everybody in the NBA. They beat the league's best. And that

made you so hopeful moving into next year and I'm intrigued to see how Houston plays this season going from being the hunters to being the hunt head. And I think just maintaining that ship on their shoulder, staying fiery is huge and you got the experience of Ambleet and

Kevin Durant and me guys like that. So it's going to be a fun season, guys. Hey guys, can we start it tomorrow? I don't even know if you saw this eclipse circulating to Kevin Durant working out. And he looks unbelievable. I mean, he looks better than you on a game day with your suit on

ballpark in Woodlands or Katie and they built up what they built the battery in Atlanta I'd be there every day yeah I mean you wouldn't be driving up from where you live to Woodlands every day it would be there's no way there's so much stuff around it you could make a whole day of it we could broadcast from out there like that's what's so cool about it the ballpark here I mean no offense the Texan stadium there's nothing around it you just offended them uh when someone says no offense the offense comes I can park I mean there's just you know we lost home plate bar and grill. We lost a lot of stuff that used to be around there. Like, it's just nothing.

I'm still skeptical that it would work just because of who we are as a town. Now, they can't get out of it because what? They got a lease for a long time, but the Texans are pushing for it. They are, but if somebody from the woodlands, if somebody from the woodlands came up today, a billionaire and said, McNair family, we will pay you whatever X amount of money and build you a brand new stadium. They would absolutely do it. I've been telling that to Ross. I still think the favorite is refurbishing energy, but it's a slight lead. I think Woodlands is a little far, and I would say, I don't know.

Sugar Land seems a little more feasible. That's kind of what truest is. It is a summer of Atlanta. But how many miles away is it? 15. Woodlands and downtown is going to be like 30 plus. Yeah. That's what I'm saying.

So somebody from Pearland up to Woodlands is going to be what? it's going to be a lot further. It's an hour. Yeah. And also what's the transportation? Like transportation here is horrible. I don't know if what it is in the land. But you could also live on Woodlands, Spring, Conroe, Kingwood, Attasca Cedar, Cyprus to fill up your, not your venue, but you fill up your office buildings and your party venues.

Yeah. But all of that is the population of what, like San Marcos or whatever? Like, why don't we have an NFL team there? You know what I'm saying? I'm not trying to, I'm not trying to be that stupid with it. But you know what I'm saying? Like, I don't know. I'm just skeptical.

I just think Houston is not the most passionate sports. Well, it kind of doesn't matter. Atlanta is bad way you put it. Yeah, I just, I think there's going to be some healthy skepticism to say, why are we going to put a couple of billion dollars into an area that has been dormant of any, I mean, even on the dome, like, look, I grew up in the dome. You didn't go on OST before games. You just didn't.

You didn't. Holly Hall wasn't a spot to go. Main Street wasn't. It's never in the history of our. city been an area that has had decent economic boom despite the fact you've had Astro Arena, Astro World, Astro Dump. You had all the different stuff and nobody could really ever build around it. Yeah, but they have all that land and it's been 20 years and why has, my other question is then why hasn't that ever been built up? If somebody would invest in Atlanta, you could

build that up. Well, all that to say. You've gentrified so many areas of Houston. The battery at Atlanta is awesome for anybody who hasn't been there. I mean, you could literally spend all day out there with shops and restaurants and sports bars and you walk right out of there into the ballpark and then when the game's over you walk right on the ballpark cross the street to the sports bar or whatever you're going to it's incredible. Well, Foxborough, where the Patriots play is its own city

I don't know that. I don't know. I don't know. I only caught the highlights. So if anybody went to the game last night, what would you say the crowd's

spin was on this? It was probably a lot of... I mean, my initial guess would be 50-50, but I don't know. And maybe they did market the Hispanic audience. And which again, I'm not listening to Hispanic TV or radio station. Because I don't understand what they're saying. Have you seen the hotties on those shows?

I mean, I might look at it on mute, but I'm not saying I'm watching this tennis match right now. I'm mute and I'm having zero problem with it. This is the women's round of 16 match. You're very invested. I believe there's a couple of semifinal winners right here. We're not even talking about the game. All right.

My point is this. I didn't even know it was happening in our town. And I was at home all weekend. I didn't see a commercial for it. Your son didn't tell you? I didn't see five, six, and ten. I didn't see Sports Center live from there. I mean, I think it was a Fox Sports One event.

I think it was a regular fox, right? Or no? It may have been regular Fox, but some of the stuff was on FS1 before. Usually you have a... I even know when, like, major European friendlies take place that the stadium was full of it. I legitimately did not know. Okay.

And I wondered if the average fan knew there was a... What would you put Gold Cup in terms of importance? Oh, it's low. I mean, the Euro's and... Europe or better. The Coppa America is bigger. This is like it's down the list. Like if the Savannah bananas were playing at Dykin

opposite the Gold Cup, what would have gotten more attention from the local news media? Probably the Savannah bananas. I guess. I don't know. I don't watch local news so I can't speak to that. I'm just about in general. I'll tell you what's a bigger deal. The Concord can't have gold cups a bigger deal. Certainly when it's USA, Mexico and the final. I'm sure it is. Certainly when it's USA, Mexico in the final as well, which is the big rivalry. And USA, while they lost two to one, it really wasn't that close. What happened?

They just got, you know. Two to one indicated close men. They just got closely. They got old play. Yeah, but I mean, yeah, you can have a two to one baseball game, but a bunch of people had a bunch of it. You know, they had a lot. I'll put it this way. Mexico had a lot more traffic on the base pass.

They did. Yeah. All right. So if anybody went yesterday, tell me what it was like to be there. if it was, I mean, obviously they had a full stadium. I think the announced tenants was $70,000. Mexico, USA was the dream. If you're putting together this event, that's the dream final.

Obviously, it's the easiest way to sell it out and, well, sell a lot of beers and whatnot. But I legitimately did not know about it until, because if USA would have, if they would have played it in, say, Kansas City, I wouldn't have cared too since. But I thought, wow, this is pretty big for you. Yeah, you should have gone. Well, I wasn't going to do that because the Astros were on. But I just thought it was weird that a relatively big national sporting event was in our community, and I had no idea. It was even going to be there.

A full stadium. Yeah, they didn't need me. Yeah, it's like I didn't know Keshe was coming into town. I've known about Keshe for quite some time. Was that on the list of tickets you got? Did you get a list from your daughter? Like, I did. Get me all these tickets now.

Yeah. My 17-year-old living a beyond charmed life. She went from a cruise to a week in Dallas playing volleyball to now being. She was in the Hill Country, fortunately not involved with the rivers and stuff, but she was hanging out with her buddies for three or four days. And then she's coming back here to, then we're going to Rhode Island next week. So you might be the number one dad, Matt. Wow.

If your team got picked for Sunday night game of the week, that was a big freaking deal. Yes.

Yeah, it's just the multitude of options. It is. It's everything. All the streaming services. I mean, even just you, you know. But even so, there's even, I guess, as you don't have to time anything anymore. You just, if you want to watch what you want to watch,

you find that on Netflix who gives it to you on a regular basis. And you know what you can also do? I tell myself, like, I didn't watch the Gold Cup final yesterday. I'm like, I'll just catch the extended highlights. The extended highlights are your friend, but also like you kind of miss a lot of the game. It's obviously better to watch the whole game. But sometimes you're like,

I just watch the highlights when I get home. See, you can do that on you. And now, you know, everybody's TV. If you had a smart TV, it's got the YouTube app on it, and you just click that, and then you plop on there. And then before you know it, three hours have passed. And you're watching the extended highlights of the 2008 Wimbledon Federal Nidal match. Maybe that was just me.

Yeah. So last. A lot of options, yeah. Yeah. So last night they had the Sunday night baseball game on. And I'm trying to see. It was Rangers Padres? There was two of them.

He thought a ball got, he was like, this ball's crushed and it was like a lazy phone. No, no, what he did is he called a home run. That what he thought was a game winner. It was the top of the end. Oh. That was bad. That was really bad. So let me tell you something. Can you get caught up in a mistake? Yes, you can. I have done it. And you can also see why a your mistake.

Yeah, cover your ass is what he's saying. Yes. Oh, I didn't get it, thank you. The easy perception is if they're walking off the mound to go to the dugout. Yes. And I'm watching a crappy game on ESPN with announcers who shouldn't be doing the game of the week because they can't even figure out when strike two or strike three was. I'm not even trying to be funny. Like, should he be, it gets like, go through some kind of cognitive checks? I was just going to say that. Because, I mean, matter of fact, I'm going to, I'm going to send you the audit. And look, let me tell you something. I have made boneheaded mistakes myself. I'm just going to fly out to you.

And once he starts to take some dry swings, we'll know a lot more. Can I say something real quick? Yes. As an athlete, and it's really, and every time I hear about this topic, it really irks me. He just said that the fracture is still there, inflammation is there, and we're going to take dry swings still? I don't even know. I've never heard of my entire life. I know what a dry swing is.
