10.1 in H-Town. Good morning and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross here on Sports Talk 790 alongside Rossville. I'm Matt Thomas. We had a nice little 10 o'clock open for you, but our computers are freezing. So when they thaw out, we will play it for you.
I see what you did there. Because it's a good song. It's an 80s early jam. Uh-huh. And it rips on one of our least favorite cities in America.
I thought you loved L.A.
I do love L.A.
I don't know what I said that.
I just don't like Dodger fan.
Dodger fan's the worst.
Dodger Stadium is amazing.
Dodger Stadium traffic is the antichrist.
Take the shuttle bus.
No.
That's what I did.
Shuttle bus bad, Uber bad, Lyft bad.
Oh, lift.
Taxi terrible.
Your own car, awful.
Rickshaw.
Yeah.
Winnebago.
Double-decker bus.
Yeah, you could pull up in the Winnibego.
Like a weekend of it.
Just sleep in the parking lot and I just didn't even be cheaper than the hotels, that's for sure.
Well, there's people sleeping in there.
Yeah.
I'm doing other things.
Last time you spent the night in a Winnebago.
Probably when I was very, very young.
I've spent nights in tents.
For me, was October of 2005.
You know, last time I was in an RV.
Yeah, with me.
That's correct.
Yeah.
We were filming Thelman-Louis videos.
ESPN went to.
Salt Lake City for the first time
ever for Game Day. This is when the Utah
youths were going undefeated.
We had Urban Myers the coach
who was there a couple years and he jettisoned off
to Florida but that's a different issue for a different time.
And
so game day came and we said we're going to
spend the night in the parking lot and we did.
Oh, that's cool. You got a good spot?
We had a big station event. We got a big screen TV
and we were like we're going to spend the whole night
there. We're going to cook
eat. Some of us would drink.
Some of us would not. It did it Salt Lake City.
and we put the game on.
There was the Indiana-D Detroit game was on.
The Malice and the Palace happened right in the parking lot.
I remember watching that.
And they played it on ESPN like 75 times that night.
Because I knew.
You're just sitting there in disbelief like, oh, my God.
They're playing it again and I'm watching it again.
Yeah, that's exactly what it was.
So, yeah, that was, I'll never forget that night.
Malice in the palace the same night as us spinning.
We got up the next morning early and then we were on ESPN game day.
It was fun.
Mm-hmm.
And kicked the crap out of BYU, so it was all good.
Utah Ute's fever.
it.
And they're doing okay.
I guess.
Fellow back,
12 brethren?
Or a big 12 brother.
Yeah.
That's right.
It's confusing.
Hey, what a wonderful weekend sports wise.
What an awful weekend for our friends in the Hill country.
I'm sure somebody, it's when the sound of her voice has been impacted somehow some way by this.
Even if you haven't.
All I would ask you to do is, first of all, if you are so inclined to pray, please pray for those families.
if you are so inclined to make a donation, go to our website,
Sports790.com.
There is a click.
I believe it on the front page.
It's very easy to get to and make a donation.
I don't know.
Not much more to say than we're just all personally should be devastated at what happened
of the last few days.
And our hearts certainly go down to anybody that's involved in the Hill Country.
My daughter, ironically enough, went with some girlfriends this weekend to go
float the Rio.
You gave me a jump scare when you said that.
It's funny because as soon as they got there, I'm like, this is going to be a great.
She's never ever done it before in her life.
And then they just canceled at the very last second.
They're there, but they're in a safe house and everything.
But they just couldn't do it because the waters were just too high.
Crazy.
Yeah.
So again, please go to our website, support 790.com and donate if you can.
Any little amount helps.
And again, thoughts and prayers to anybody that has been affected by this and all the news stations or whatnot across the country.
Today's show was down there this morning. So obviously a very, very sad situation.
On a much more, an extremely much more lighthearted note, the local nine went to Los Angeles.
And I've been thinking about this all weekend, Ross.
Okay.
I've been doing this Houston radio bit for a long time.
You're a veteran of the biz, man.
I'm a veteran of the biz.
I don't know if I've been more startled than any one singular sports team in the history.
me talking about Houston sports teams.
And I'll just give you examples. It would be like a team, and maybe there are teams that have
been discussed at least Houston-wise, that were projected to win, for instance, order slash
Texans, a team that was projected to go 12 and 5 or 11 and 5, whatever they least place 16,
and they wound up winning 3. A rocket team that was projected to win 53 that won 24.
or a Astros team that was projected to go 100, win 96, it won up winning 66.
So using that as kind of a parameter, if you would have told me the Astros are 20 games above 500 at any point in the 2025 season,
with all the pitchers that went on the injured list before the season even started,
not knowing what your bullpen was going to be frankly leaving training camp
yes having no Kyle Tucker no Alex Spregman
no Yordon well Yordon was playing but you know
well he was terrible he was terrible didn't hurt
and something called Cam Smith
who just made the roster after being in the college world series or playoffs a year
beforehand.
You'd have told me in early July
there will be 20 games over 500.
I would have had you B-slot me.
Open hand.
It's incredible.
And as you laid it out, I did think of
one possible comparison.
I hope you can find one.
Remember the Rockets 22-game win streak in 2008?
That was one of those like,
what is happening? How are they doing this?
Either was it,
Yao, I think, was hurt in the middle of it.
I think by the end of it, both Tracy McGrady and Yao were hurt, maybe.
I mean, which was always happening during that era anyways.
They did a documentary about the 20-game streak.
Yeah, the 22-game win streak, I remember like, what is this?
How is this happening?
How does this continue to happen?
That's the only thing that can kind of come to my mind that comes close.
But, yeah, the way that they just continue to exceed expectations,
despite everything that you laid out that's going against them.
Now, of course, they've had some help.
There are some things before Jeremy Pena go,
went down. He was incredible.
Esoc Paredes is having a really good season.
Jose Altuve.
Keep booing, Dodgers fans.
And Christian Walker waking up.
But it's been here or there.
It's been Cooper Hummel.
It's been Zach Short.
Okay.
Let's go.
You brought up the last name.
So I'm doing Saturday's pregame show.
Yes.
And I'm going to peel the curtain back because I feel like it's important.
I peel the curtain back because we're family here on the show.
Mm-hmm.
So I'm running through the Astro starting lineups before the game.
Yes.
And I noticed that somebody had a day off.
It must have been, I don't know, was it Jake Myers had a Saturday off.
Yes.
And now he's possibly hurt?
Let's not go there.
But anyways.
So I'm running through it.
I know the name's Altuba.
I know the name's Hummel.
I know the names Paredes.
I know Walker.
And then at 9 it says Z short.
And I'm like, I could.
There's very few names that are Z.
Zach probably would be the number one on the list.
What's number two?
I don't even know.
Zed?
Yeah.
I don't know if he's from the old west.
Zach oriah.
But point being is that I would feel terrible if I would have guessed wrong.
Okay.
So I just went and short said,
stop batting ninth?
Yes.
I didn't know his first name.
Yeah, he'd been called him a couple days before.
I heard his name, but previously, but I'd have said out of mind.
I mean, he's like, you would have thought he was the Cesar Saddazar.
I mean, he was basically.
Basically not going to play just occupying a spot.
Like, like Shane Whitcomb has done for the most part.
He's just been hanging out.
Yeah, not playing.
Hanging on the 40 men, eating good meals.
He's getting a lot of batting practice in.
So, you know, it's what it is.
Yeah, called up on.
with the Guillermo going down.
Luis Guillaume.
Zach Short had three hits yesterday.
Zach Short.
Again, 219 AAA hitting Zach Short.
It wasn't like he was crushing
at any levels of the minor leagues.
He is a journeyman at the very best.
Probably a guest tomorrow on the A team.
Mike would be a chalk pick on that.
It's all right.
He's a good story, Matt.
Yeah.
It's a great story.
Good interviews can make a good interviewers
can make a good interview.
He was on with Julia yesterday, as a matter of fact.
Okay.
So, Zach freaking short's got three hits.
Taylor Trammell, who can't hit, made a terrific play in center field after replacing
Jake Myers last night.
And Taylor Trammell's actually played up some pretty good outfit.
Again, he can't hit a lick, but that's another here nor there.
That's all right.
I mean, he's not playing a whole lot.
Does it count as a left-headed bat if it can't hit?
Yeah, that's not the left-headed bat.
So here's Taylor Trammell.
Well, he doesn't have a good bat.
ball to second base is slow roller
and I mean a slow roller.
If you need a left-handed bat in the woods
and the bat can't hit, is it a bat?
I don't know. Does it reach the outfield?
It doesn't even count.
Your squad is 20 games above
500 with that.
What would just describe by the last five minutes?
Insane.
It is absolutely insane
how things have turned out for the local nine.
And I'm very happy about it.
713-212-5-7-9.
If you want to jump into the conversation,
713-212-5-790.
It is time for you to brag about the local 9.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Also on the radio program today,
everything from the Rockets is now official.
Kevin Durant,
Doreen Phiney Smith,
the OG Clint Capella,
and Kim One more got moved to the Washington Wizards.
And we'll talk to Ryan Howland's
about that 11 o'clock this morning.
He wanted to play more?
There's playing time on the Wizards.
he's going to score a lot.
Yes.
And there'll be some came with more truthers.
Look what he's doing, scoring 22 points a game.
He'll have a 30 point game or something or maybe even 40 and people are like, see?
And look, that's something we've talked about many times.
That's not surprising.
It's just going to be, is he going to be a volume shooter or efficient shooter?
And what will he do on the defensive side of things?
And will he ultimately make them a better basketball team?
But that's for DC radio to figure out.
Yeah.
I think there's one thing he needs to do, Matt.
to turn his career around.
Do we do Cam Wittmore T's on this show?
We do not.
Okay, I tried.
It was a fine effort.
All right, 1013 on the Matt Thomas show
with Ross 713-212-5-790.
At 11 o'clock, we've got Ryan Hollins.
Now, I did text Jonathan Allen
to see if he wanted to do
to tell the truth at 1130.
We didn't get a response.
No, Jonathan never texted.
No, he just thumbs up.
He just thumbs up.
He just hits us with it.
And, by the way, I sent that text at 430, 6 o'clock yesterday.
I gave him a.
Thumbs up.
When did you give the thumbs up at 9.30 this morning?
8.30.
Whatever.
Why don't you ever text anybody unless it's an hour before the show?
Well, because if I see it late, I'm just giving a response.
Late, it was 6 o'clock on the Sunday.
What's that?
I didn't see it.
I was on the game.
I didn't see it.
Oh, what were you playing?
I was playing Rocket League.
Oh, Rocket League.
Okay.
So do you want to tell the truth or do you want to wait a week?
No, I can do it.
I can make it some right now.
Okay, we'll make some up.
You're at 1130.
Okay.
You got an hour and 15.
Let's do it.
This could be amazing.
It could be a train wreck, but it's going to be much worth it.
It could be both.
I'm competitive now.
Some train wrecks are amazing.
I'm trying to think of some good one.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, you get an hour and 15 to think about it.
Yeah, you do have some crackpot take, so this would be tough.
Yeah, this is going to be good.
And then we have, believe it or not today, 150, and I've already done it.
It's already locked and loaded.
It's a happy birthday to a Ringo star.
Oh, really?
85 years young today.
Oof.
Good life.
It's a great run.
I mean, it's one of the luckiest drummers of all time.
713-212-5-790 7-1-3-212-5-790 we got a lot to get to today between now and 2 o'clock come on and join us it's the matt thomas show with ross and this is sports talk 790
1019 of the mad topics show at ross the things i learn about my partner during breaks is just incredible
what do you learn what i can't describe it internet only show i'm so happy that jonathan you're doing to tell the truth at a
And 30.
This is going to be an opportunity for you to grow as a show host or we're going to put you out to pasture.
One of the two.
No, it's not true.
I'm good.
I'm excited.
I'm excited.
So have you just, okay, you can do your option.
You can tell us three truths and one false or you can do one true and three false.
It's up to you.
I'm doing three truths and one lie.
I'll tell you all early.
Oh, he's already got a lie.
He's already like the load.
Yeah.
I feel I can get a good line there.
Okay.
Okay.
Wow.
That was quick.
That'll be coming up at 1130.
the day. We got Ryan Hollins at 11 o'clock. Because honestly,
he can at least talk about the players now. We can talk legally about the players. Now, as a talk show host,
I can do that all the time. And the Rockets understand that. If I was just a Rockets employee,
and that's all I did, I would have to not do anything. And that's why I want to make sure
Ryan was in a good spot that he could come on and join us. But now I think he's officials,
we can really get into it and kind of get a forecast of what we could expect on and what to
see with the Rockets. And we'll talk more about that as they move along. But I do want to brag about the Astros
again.
And I don't know if you can get to the audio if Oral Hersheiser is in the RCS.
And our-
I just restarted my computer system is down right now, so I don't know if he can play it at
this point, but that's fine.
What was the name again?
Oral-Hershizer.
It's ORL, for those of you playing at home.
Are you a fan of oral?
Yes.
I liked him as a player.
That's the guy that was talking about Astros are cheating?
He had, how many innings was his story?
Wasn't it in the 80s or something?
It's been so long, I don't remember.
But he was a guy that absolutely caused a young Matt Thomas a lot of heartache
because he'd come in here with the Dodgers and beat the Astros of the Dome many a time.
And he at one point had the longest, is it still the longest streak of?
59, I wasn't close.
Yeah, that's fine.
What are you going to do?
Whatever.
It was the 90s.
Yeah.
Does he still on the longest hitless score to streak?
Yes, 59 consecutive innings.
That's pretty great.
He's crazy. 59 innings not giving up a run.
Yeah, that's insane.
So, yeah, Oral does the TV for the Dodgers.
And he's a whiner.
Put his foot in his mouth.
And I know what he was trying to say.
For those who don't know, we're trying to paraphrase it.
He basically alluded to the fact that the Astros were pounding anybody that was throwing pitches for the Dodgers.
He says, I don't want to bring up an old wound.
Specifically breaking balls he was referencing.
Yeah, it looked like the Astros knew what was coming.
which could be tipping a pitch's
which could be very of course
but he wasn't alluding to tipping a pitch
he was alluding to that the asteros were cheating
him so I'm sorry
you have to know
that while your Dodger television fan base
probably went
nice good chuckle on you have the audio here it is
a matter of fact let's let you hear what Oral had to say
Friday after the Astros or during the Astros
beat down the Dodgers
feels like you've stumbled on the right thing
because even veterans have
slumps it hard to deep center field pahez on the wall it's trying to watch this one wedge itself
in the bottom of the wall and cams smith flying into second anchoring there with another extra base hit
for the astros double homer double so open third against casperius i don't want to open an old
long but in some ways they're swinging at these breaking balls like they know what it's coming
these are that is not a bad pitch it's really a very good pitch
That's funny.
All right.
So the reality is, well, again, Dodger TV fan is chuckling over this.
Astro fan found out about it in one second and annihilated its oral, Hersheiser.
And frankly, America annihilated him.
Awful announcing is a website and a Twitter account that takes audio of every broadcast.
So if anything controversial or crazy is said, even on a local broadcast, they're going to catch it, send it off.
and they've got quite a following.
And they're like,
Oral, amazing, awful announcement,
it's like, what are you doing?
Why would you open yourself up to that?
It's ridiculous.
If Oral's getting the hate,
then you know what?
You said it.
Has he made any further comment?
I don't know.
He didn't work Saturday.
And then Sunday, I don't know what was going on.
But, I mean, it would be like,
I mean, I don't know.
If I was doing a Rockets broadcast, Ross
of something and
I brought up something from yesteryear
that would have
eight years ago at this point yeah
I mean eight years
I just think sometimes
and they're on the road
yeah well even so even all that
sometimes you have things
that you would like to throw in a broadcast
that you just
bite your tongue and go you know what
I don't think I want to go viral with this
unless I really really truly believe
what I'm saying and you know that
all Hirschizer
even from
what he said, you know he didn't mean it.
He was just doing it to get Dodger, L.A.
fan to appreciate
him. I don't know his style. I don't know, I don't know,
I mean, if he was trolling. Remember when
the Dave Raymond thing went viral and we knew
he was trolling because we know Dave Raymond?
We know Dave. But I don't know
how serious he was being.
I just...
It sounds like he's being pretty
serious. It sounds like he's being serious.
And more importantly,
you know that it was going
to trigger a group of people.
And it triggered all the baseball for at least that night.
It triggered national folks going,
Oral, are you serious?
You're really going to go to this?
It triggered Astro fans.
And it clearly probably positively said,
yeah, no wonder our Dodgers are getting their ass kicked at home.
We don't ever lose like this.
And it's like he's saying it to appease the audience
because he knows who he has and make him feel better.
You just, because I'll be brutally honest with you.
it's very difficult for me as a play-by-play announcer for the Rockets
to talk about Dremont Green.
And so sometimes I really have to bite my tongue.
And I think Dremont Green is an excellent basketball player.
I think Dremont Green is a generational talent in some respects
about the way he positions and plays the game.
But he's also generational in terms of the absolute
horrific
non-basket
non-sportsmanship angles he puts
to the way he treats officials
and what he gets away with.
The amount of hitting of players and cheap shots.
And trying to injure them.
And trying to injure them. So
just watching him work,
and especially as I was calling
a seven-game series with the Golden State Warriors,
you really, really want to
just let it out, but you just don't.
So I didn't.
You can't call him a D-bag in the middle of the call.
I don't think.
I think I can.
Well, you could, but again, I don't want to be on awful.
I don't, well, I mean, I don't mean I'd be out of a job, but I don't, I don't, my thought is I want to be, if I'm ever going to go viral something, I want to be something funny.
I've gone viral in my life for one thing.
And it was when I announced the Golden State Warrior lineup.
Yes.
Even if I'm thinking of anything else.
That's it.
I'm very pleased of that.
If that's the one only thing I've got, unless you do something, you manipulate something.
Until that arrest record gets out.
Stop.
My point is that that was funny and interesting.
interesting and lighthearted and it was not meant as a malicious attempt to downgrade.
It was just, you know what, they're in our building.
It was game seven.
I wanted them to lose and I just want to let them know that I didn't care for who they were.
Yeah.
Also, you've been doing that all year.
It's funny how sometimes.
Yeah, that's right.
The weirdest most innocuous thing or something that you've been doing forever goes viral.
So that's my point.
The least, the fewer times I can go viral in my life, the better.
That's the opposite, I think.
Mm-mm.
Not in 2025.
No, in 2025.
There are people out there supporting Diddy and like marching for him outside of the courthouse.
Exactly.
I will tell you one thing that.
And as you said, Did he did what, Matt?
What do you diggling back over there for?
You missed the Thursday open.
Yeah, we did the Friday open on Thursday.
You did not.
And then the whole show, I thought it was Friday.
So I didn't tease.
I didn't tease, I just don't get it.
I didn't tease Brian McTaggart because we did the Friday open.
and it was like a holiday Thursday, so I was in Friday mode.
So I did the worst job in radio history of teasing ahead on Friday.
And you allowed this to happen, Jonathan?
It was kind of funny.
It was literally the 1050s break.
He goes, are we doing McTaggart here?
I was like, oh my God.
You didn't mention him a single time.
No, I didn't mention him once.
How long have you been in this business?
16 years.
That's what I thought.
You disappoint me so.
But I wasn't surprised.
713-212-5-790 if you'd like to join it.
Bob, your squad went 20 games above 100.
We have, Ross, I know we got nine people waiting to talk to us here.
We don't have nine lines.
Lines are working, though.
Lines are working, don't speak too soon.
Oh, there was issues earlier today?
Yeah, so let's play.
Okay, put in a trouble ticket and make a...
You're supposed to call me, so...
Okay.
All right, we need one guinea pig caller to see if you sound halfway decent.
Do the phone lines work?
7-1-3.
2-1-2?
5-7-9.
Jose Al-Tuve.
Oh.
Soul Crusher.
Christian Walker.
Dodger Stadium Crusher.
Yes.
And Coors Field Crusher.
How about this?
The Astros lose one game on the road trip and it's in Denver.
It just shows you again how wacky baseball is.
That's baseball, as they say.
That is baseball as they say.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-2-5-79.
1034, Sports Talk 790.
It is the Matt Thomas Show at Ross.
We have a grandiose open.
We'll use it noon today because I just love the song.
Okay.
And the Astros swept the Dodgers, and we will talk.
You know what?
I don't know if Ryan Hollins is a Dodger fan or not.
He grew up in L.A.
I would say probably yes, then.
Yeah, I got to ask him because we'll talk to Ryan coming up about...
You know there are other Astros broadcasts, I mean, Rockets broadcasters who are Dodgers fans?
Oh, when I...
On Friday I did.
And you got some middle finger emojis.
Or worse?
I would consider them worse.
Love Adrian.
So I didn't do anything Saturday.
I certainly didn't do anything yesterday either.
Oh, really?
No.
You got to twist the knife after the sweep.
No.
Unless he's threatening violence on you.
He was giving me Spanish swear words that I went and looked at translations.
You had to click the Google Translate on there?
A lot of them involved machete, knives, and throw.
road slashing.
Oh, no.
Next time, Matt, you say,
Nomi, I'll let's at C.
What?
That means don't talk to me that way.
You just say that to them.
It'll be so surprised.
Yeah, I'm going to be, I'm going to be fine.
Have a nice day.
Anthony, dear Park on the Matt Tabba show at Ross.
Anthony, good morning to you.
Hey, good morning, guys.
Hey, I don't know which one is sweeter when the Astro sweep the Dodgers or
sweep the Yankees, but I just had to call and get this off my chest to tell
Oral Hirschizer to shut his bomb ass up.
Like, what?
Let it go, dude.
Let it go.
Let it go.
Like the Astros, like, they're just, they own you.
They're better than you.
It is what it is.
I don't know if yesterday was bring your broom to work day or what, but I hope he enjoyed this
Astro sweep on his flight to Milwaukee last night.
That's it, guys.
Thank you.
Thank you, Anthony, for the phone call.
That doesn't, what happens to the Dodgers happens once every eight years, apparently.
A team comes in and sweeps him.
And the Friday loss was the worst home loss in Dodgers Stadium history.
In one of the story, isn't it the third oldest after Wrigley and Fenway?
Yeah.
It's the third oldest stadium in baseball.
So great.
So amazing.
So Friday night was obviously July 4th.
And they had 50 something thousand people there.
Yes. This is the best part.
And they came in part because the Dodgers do a really good fireworks display.
I have been to a July 4th at Dodger Stadium.
I know from experience how good it is.
And they let fans on the field.
So everybody wanted to get on the field.
Yeah.
So if you want to get on the field
and you want to see this amazing fireworks display,
and remember it's in Chavez Ravine,
so it's kind of surrounded by hills and mountains.
So you couldn't be just strolling along one of the interstates and catch it.
You're going to be kind of in a little valley there.
You had to stick around to watch that ass beaten.
Mm.
Mm.
Mm.
That's what we were trying to figure that out when we were watching the game.
It was like, man, this place says,
clearing out at all. I was like, oh, there's fireworks.
And it was full the whole time.
They just had to watch.
Did you also...
Home run after home run. Did you also see that the
Rockies and the White Sox played each other in Denver this weekend?
Yeah, they had $48,000.
48 for that bad boy, because guess what?
Major League Baseball teams, by and large, do nice jobs on fireworks.
Mm-hmm.
And you had two teams...
You had two teams that combined for over 100 losses.
And they had $48,000 in the building.
fireworks are crazy
fireworks
that's kind of and I just don't get it
maybe I'll bring it up on Thursday
no no no I will say this
I mean I get it but
I love fireworks as long as they're far away
from me or anybody of my family
or my house the professional ones
I'm with you as well
because I can tell you this
there is nothing better
than being in a ballpark
or at a concert
and knowing that the fireworks
are done by professionals
and you put good music behind it
it's fun
Yeah. Lee Greenwood's revenues going up.
Sparklers, the
you know the ones that you put in the middle of your streets
that could hit somebody's tree and then cause a flash fire.
Not a big fan of those.
And my dogs, you know what I did on Friday night after the Astros game?
You put dog-eat earmuffs on them?
The dogs are in our bed.
And thankfully, it wasn't too bad because it rained all day.
So it was kind of, it was not as much energy for fireworks.
I feel like I didn't hear as much firework activity as normal.
For sure.
Let's go to Chris in Jersey Village at 1038.
Hi, Chris.
Yeah, hey guys.
Good morning.
Great weekend of watching Astros baseball.
I listened to it on my I-Heart radio up in Huntsville as I was camping.
Man, I could not believe what I was here on Friday night with the 18 runs.
It's just, man, they are really, I said they were overachieving about three weeks ago.
Now I think this is just who they are.
Espada is just a great coach.
He's got a great demeanor.
to get a team like this through what they've gotten what they've had to go through with all the injuries and um
just want to say uh congrats to him and uh also about the all-star game i believe this is pania's
first all-star appearance yeah so congrats to him and the other two guys that made it but uh i wanted
to hear from the president of the jake myers fan club himself about how he feels about jake getting
snubbed. I mean, I just think the voting is a joke. It's obviously a popularity contest, but
Jake is definitely deserving of it. So, you know, we all, I'm glad he's not going. I personally
think that that injury, Jake suffered a couple years ago. It took all of last year for him to really
get back on his feet and trust his body because he throws his body around the center field like
nobody's business. And this year, we're just seeing what we saw before the injury. So what do you
got to say about Jake getting snubbed, Ross.
Yeah, you're right. I'm also petitioning for
him to already be inducted into the Hall of
Fame to waive the five years and have active
player in there as well. Well, he might
become the first Astro Hall of Famer
to be inducted while still playing
for the Astros. That's what I'm hoping for.
But no.
Okay, I'm looking, I know the All-Star
starters. Who are the All-Star
Outfield Reserves?
Buxton, Kwan, Julio, Rodriguez.
No, Jake does.
Jake's not making that cut.
I'm sorry.
I do appreciate Jake,
and I think he's great,
and he's having a fantastic season.
So here's the problem.
Average is good.
Holi-O-R-Reges makes the All-Star team, OPS of 695.
That's true.
George Springer's OPS 886, no All-Star.
Joe Adele, OPS-823, does not meet the All-Star.
So in some respects, it is popular.
Absolutely.
It's part of it.
Actually, you know what?
Excuse me, that's incorrect.
The players voted Rodriguez in over Springer and Adele.
It was the players that did it.
And Jake Myers.
And Jake Myers.
That's all right.
Yeah.
If he keeps this up next year, he'll be more in the mix.
Okay, so we know, okay, so Josh Hader's in for the sixth time.
Good for him.
Yes.
Jeremy Pena's in for the first time.
If I'm Jeremy Pena, I know I want to play.
No.
He said it yesterday.
No.
He can't play.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, Jeremy.
You're not even doing baseball activities right now.
Maybe he can DH.
Pinch run.
Yeah.
I don't even want him doing that.
He might slide.
You know what?
I don't want him playing.
And then no Fromber, which, by the way,
Fromber is going to get on the team because there'll be some pitching people.
Somebody will get replaced.
And then Hunter Brown is, when is he's pitching next?
Is he's got to be?
I thought it was supposed to be, I thought it was supposed to be close to the end.
remember.
No, he's tomorrow, actually.
So he should be good.
So Tuesday means they would pitch on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
He could throw an inning on Tuesday.
It's a normal day for him to throw.
Yeah.
Well, we'll see.
We'll see.
As long as it doesn't conflict with his normal schedule.
Again, I would send him to the All-Star game in bubble wrap.
Mm-hmm.
And I would not let him out of that bubble wrap.
I would just keep him in uniform.
I'm on board with this.
Yeah.
So all I'm saying is I know that a lot of y'all get fired up for it with this team and the way that they are fighting through injuries right now and keeping people alive.
Jeremy, God love you.
I think you're awesome.
You can't play in the game.
Somebody's got to talk some sense into this young man.
Yeah.
All right.
1043.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
If you'd like to join us, 713-212-5-790.
That's 7-13-212-5-790.
We'll talk to Ryan Hollins about all.
all the cool things that happened with the Astros.
No, the Astros, the Rockets says they officially have Kevin Durant signed, Clint Capella, they move Cam Wentmore, Dorian Finney Smith, who was a rocket killer.
Now in the rocket gear.
Thankfully.
By the way, I'll come back and give you the win total for the Rockets.
First one is out this year.
I have not seen it.
I want to see if you play, we'll play the range game.
Oh, man.
You get within one and a half either direction.
Think about it.
1043 on Sports Talk 790.
1050 Sports Talk 790.
Ryan Holland's going to join us in about 10 minutes to talk about the new look rockets.
All right. Real quick, Rossi, before we get to a couple other phone calls, Larry and Carlos will get to you in a matter of moments here.
Rockets win total.
What do you think?
You get plus one and a half either direction.
I did a lot of thinking.
And I'm going to go 53 and a half.
The actual number of wins.
Oh, man, your reaction.
I'm scared.
54.5.
Nicely done.
Oh, okay.
You know, I was going to go 52 and a half, and I'm like, ah.
Now, last year, they opened up at 44.5.
They finished with 52.
Yes.
If they improve seven and a half games this year,
yeah, it'll be in real good shape.
That'd be 60 wins.
I don't know if that's going to happen, but it would be lovely.
Yeah.
We'll talk about this with Ryan Hollins.
coming up.
But I wonder the regular season, it's going to be one of those situations,
kind of like the Astros the last couple of years.
Like, just get to the playoffs.
And then that's when the real season starts.
Because one of the reasons they won 52 games is because two of the guys that they gave away.
Jalen Green being available for all 82 games.
Dylan Brooks doing what he did in the value.
And that's not to say that we don't know that for sure that Kevin Durant's not going to be available.
I don't think he's going to be for sure.
You are definitely an older basketball team.
Fred's a year older.
Durant's 37.
Doran Finney Smith's been the league 10 years.
So there could be, you know,
you're, you basically brought Clint Capella in to supplement when Stephen Adams can't play.
Yes.
So you are basically super old at the top, not the Fred's super old, but older.
And you're still, you got some babies at the bottom.
But of all, you know what I mean?
Baby bottoms.
It's, no, I know what you're saying.
It's, yeah.
And the team is extremely deep.
So that's what I think
is also going to help them.
You're missing some of the value,
the 82 game value that you had,
but you also have, I think, a deeper roster.
Yeah.
For sure, this team is significantly deeper
than it was a year ago.
By the one thing that my buddies are on the league
are saying, who's your two guard?
I'm like, I don't think you have to define
what that is anymore.
Yeah, shut your bum asses up.
It's positionless bet.
It's not like, this is my one guard,
this is my two guard.
No, you put a bunch of guys out there.
there and then you just play. Kevin Durant can play three positions. He can play anywhere.
I mean, Thompson can play four. He played Kevin Durant played center and, yeah, are you saying
three, four, five for him or two, three, four five, I don't care. You can probably, yeah,
I mean, he's not running point, but he can bring the ball off the court. I mean, yeah, yeah.
He has before. And right, he's, you're, he, it's whatever. I'm not worried about that.
Yeah, nor am I. Let's go to, uh, Larry on the mat, Thomas show. Larry, thank you for holding. Good morning to
you. Hey, how you doing, Matt?
Good, Larry. What's up?
Hey, man, I've been listening to you ever since
Ross was a puppy, man, but I don't call in
as much because I'm older now.
You still sound great, Larry. You're always welcome on the show.
I remember you, Larry in Spring.
Yes, sir. Hey, Matt,
my favorite thing about this weekend was Friday night.
I watched the whole game,
and I was elated to watch those Dodger fans
have to sit nine in.
through that, man, that was hilarious.
I loved it.
I loved it.
Hello?
Yeah, you're on.
You're on.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hey, man, that was just great, man.
And I forever listen to you long as you all on the radio.
And love you all.
Be safe, all right?
Thank you, Larry.
Thank you, Larry.
Appreciate it.
It was rather enjoyable.
Again, I have two dogs at my house,
and they flip out on July 4.
So we were not going to go out and do anything because we were worried about them.
We don't, you know, we're not big fireworks consumers.
So it was just easy for us to stay home.
And I watched the game.
And I couldn't turn it away.
I was like, I'm like, we can find something else.
Exactly.
It was like, you're just sitting there like, more, more, more.
You left two on base.
How dare you?
We're in 20.
It was like when I went to OU in Texas and it was 49 to zero.
And we're all like, ah, more.
It was so good.
Yeah.
That's exactly how I feel.
felt. And then Saturday, I'm doing the, I worked Saturday.
And so I was like, oh, they're down one-nothing. And then all of a sudden, boom, they get back and get into that game.
Great defense, good relief pitching, timely hitting.
And then Sunday was just a little bit of a late boom.
Zach Short Day.
Now, I will say this. After watching Otani first throw the first two innings where we saw another, but BBs, I'm like, this could be a long night.
But then the bullpen game in and then the wrestles history.
Yeah.
Let's go to Carlos in San Antonio at 1055.
Hi, Carlos.
Carlos.
Carlos.
You know what the funny thing is, read what it says he's calling in for.
He says he's a test caller.
We can't hear him.
I think he hung up.
Yeah, sorry.
Oh, there you are.
Hi, Carlos.
Are you messing with us, Carlos?
Come on, man.
Well, just because I was supposed to be just a test caller, man.
Well, we're testing you.
How's your life?
Well, we can't hear you, and now the line sounds like it's blipping.
great.
Yeah, yeah.
So, yeah, I live out in the hill country.
So we're, you know, that game, watching everything going on, the game, the floods
and everything.
It was just so like, I mean, not to minimize what's happened over there in the floods
and everything.
But I tell you what, watching those astros kick their butts in, that was his spiritual
winning as far as I was concerned.
But here's my question.
What?
What's the deal with Stromber and the All-Star game?
And then I'll just hang you up.
Thank you.
Thank you, Carlos.
And please be safe.
Everybody that listened to us in Central Texas.
Frumber did not make it.
I'm frankly surprised.
It's not like he just had a good two or three weeks.
He's had a great two or three months.
What I think 10 of his last 11 starts were quality.
That did not get the quality start on Saturday because he gave it the four runs,
but they still gave you six.
He's going to make the team.
Somebody in that pitching staff is not going to go,
and Fromber will be able to go.
and Frober will throw, if he threw Saturday, so that's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
He'll throw Thursday.
He could easily throw an inning in the All-Star game on Tuesday if he wanted to.
Mm-hmm.
He will.
Yeah, he's going.
If you're a Frogber fan, you can just enjoy the fact that he didn't get selected.
Now he's got a little Burunders, you know what, and he's going to go.
By the way, got an email this morning, and I'm not responded to it yet.
There are some people saying that maybe Fromber's gone at the end of this year.
You could go train him to go get obfirm.
optimum value for you right in him right now.
I don't think you can do that when you're 20 games about 500 in your game and a half away from the best record in the major league baseball.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, it's Hunter.
No.
No.
You, your goal is to win the World Series.
Yeah.
And he helps you get there.
You don't get, you have no shot.
I'll say it.
You have no shot without Frumber on this team.
No.
Because who's your two.
Let's begin.
Let's, well, let's, well, it's Hunter, but I mean, three, four, five is a hot mess.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Lance McCullors, too. Six innings.
McCullors Islands.
Getting a little more populated.
We got a couple people drifted in.
But when he got hit on the foot,
he was like, oh, here we go again.
He locked in when he got hit in the foot.
That was crazy.
Yeah, that's funny.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Obviously more on the asteros coming up
in over the next three hours on this radio show.
I also want to say that we're going to talk some NBA basketball.
and we'll do that next with our friend
Ryan Hollins here on
Sports Talk 790s.
112.
That's holy misread.
1102.
You scrambled the numbers, but you got close.
I was going to say, man, I just need to move.
Room 112, where the players dwell.
It's been over my head.
Is that a song? Is that a song I should know?
No, I just made it up on the spot, Matt.
That's not true at all.
Hey, it's the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Let's say, how do our?
friend Ryan Hollins.
Ryan,
are you a Dodger guy?
Yes or no.
You can't be an Angels fan.
There's no such thing as Angel fans, correct?
We can't disclose that.
We're Astros, guys.
We're Astros.
Okay.
State City Home Network.
What is wrong with you?
You're such a politician.
I love you.
You know that.
Oh, my gosh.
How are your brethren in Los Angeles?
They can't be very happy.
The local 9 went in there and beat them three straight times.
Oh, I mean, it's a long season, Maddie.
You know that.
Whoever is tied at the end.
But no, L.A. has its shares ups and down.
You know that.
I know.
I know.
Hey, now as official rocket broadcasters,
we can freely talk about all the moves that were made, my friend.
So let's go piece by piece on this.
The Kevin Durant talk never really ever went away.
And it got piping hot as the offseason began.
when you were hearing the name,
you obviously are very encouraged,
one of the greatest players of all time,
but now put in perspective,
how does he fit as a Houston Rocket, in your opinion?
I think he fits beautifully, Matt,
because the one thing that we know
is E-Mays built a culture that will not waver
for a player or a poor mindset
as a whole organization,
everybody's on the same page.
And the reason I say that is
you're not going to you're not looking at kevin durand at this stage's career and saying
kevin durant go go in you know score 50 points a night going you know average seven assists
go be a playmaker you want kevin durant to be kevin durant and that's score the basketball
he brings uh championship experience he brings lint to this double big lineup that we saw
so much success with uh he's already had a rapport with jabari in the office
offseason and he's a guy that you're excited about what he can become because his work ethic
and his mindset.
But the Houston group, which was top of the league in defense, top of the league in rebounding,
struggled in a half court to score if they can't manufacture points with their defense,
you got a guy who can manufacture his own offense.
So that's the excitement there to join this group that has already built something that was
second in the West last season.
All right.
So who takes over the moxie part of the Dylan Brooks loss to the Phoenix Sons?
And again, one of the things that Ross and I have talked about is say what you all about
Jalen.
And obviously Jalen was at or near the top of scoring for the Rockets all season long.
And he also played 82.
It feels like all these acquisitions, Doreen Phenny Smith, Clint Capel, the re-signing of Stephen Adams,
obviously Kevin Durant.
No one expects these guys to go full 82.
But you're replacing two guys that gave you as many minutes as anybody on the Rocket's team.
team last season?
Yeah, well, I think it's key, obviously, man.
It really, really hurts losing Dylan and Jalen and Jalen and Jop.
But what Rafael did is he addressed means, okay?
So I envision, this is not from the coaches staff or anybody,
that Finney Smith can play that Dylan Brooks role as obviously he doesn't have the energy,
but he brings the size, he can defend, he can shoot the three.
I think he could be the long-term starter in that position because you're right,
Matt, that's a lot of minutes at the two and three spot that are missing.
And you'd assume, hey, Kevin Durant, you're going to want him for the playoffs.
He may not play in a huge amount of minutes.
You know, you're not necessarily looking at 82 games.
The importance for Kevin Durant is in the playoffs.
So, Finney Smith was a huge signing.
And I think everybody overlooked that because they didn't see, as you noted, Matt,
the importance of Dylan Brooks and Jalen Green and their availability
and how hard they played and the energy and effort.
And, you know, Finney Smith is, he's one of those guys.
And that's why the Lakers were so upset that they couldn't sign him and he ends up getting away.
Ross with you here as well, Ryan, and a lot of talk has been had about the starting lineup.
How do you see it configured?
Do you think it'll be, you know, we saw it for stretches last year to where Coach Udoka would make it very matchup dependent.
And it wasn't the same five every time.
Do you think it'll be more of the same?
Absolutely.
I can see that. Obviously, you can pinch to Shingoon, Durant, Van Vleet, as starters.
And I think this is my opinion.
I thought, and I'm in Thompson as a starter, obviously.
But I think the gold that we found towards the end of last season, Ross, and Ross, I know Matt thinks you're crazy,
but I think you're going to agree with me on this, okay?
You're going to agree with me.
I think Jabari come up the bench was such a cheat code.
because he can sub in at center and you get really fast and really small,
or he can sub in, you know, and you get this jumbo lineup for one of the guards and go big.
Or let's say Durant sits out or, you know, Finney Smith or whoever misses a game,
he subs right in because for most of the time here with the Rockets, he was a starter and he won't miss a beat.
So I think the goal would be, you know, just the versatility of Jabari Smith Jr.
and that's why Houston went out and extended him and really put faith in him.
And I think even the urgency for the Durant, it wasn't just for Durant.
It's because, hey, we got this young star in Jabari Smith, Jr.
That we believe in.
I think it showed a lot of faith in him.
Yeah, I would agree.
I think Coach Udoka values his versatility, like you said,
guarding basically one through five on switches and using him in any number of different ways.
He's so matchup dependent.
But he can help you.
He's like a great tool to have in the toolbox for email.
Edoca and as will Kevin Durant
be and kind of
how much do you think about this
offense and the way that it's going to flow to where
one of the good things about the
offense last year was while it was Jalen Green
sometimes Alper and Shungoon there was a lot of
equality with guys getting
looks and stuff like that and with
Kevin Durant who you got to be that
kind of ISO alpha dog but you don't
necessarily want to build your offense around that
yeah and
again I think the biggest
thing is like you know Kevin Durant
spot up and shoot. You know, we're going to,
we're a guy we can run offense and some
sets through, but
Shinggoon was double-teamed for season
long. And the times he didn't get
double-team, he tried. He
absolutely fried. And
even in the playoffs, he was, he was
successful.
You know, just being put in and a hand, so
now you're saying, you can't help
off Durant. You can't help
off, you know, Finney Smith, he's a good
shooter from out there, and that
just changes the offense. And then
I listen, man, there's the great Jim Herrick, UCLA champ, 95 coach.
He had the same.
He was saying, you guys would love this.
He goes, he goes, it's not about the X's and O's.
It's about the Jimneys and Joe's, okay?
So it's about the players, okay?
So when all else fails, you get the ball to Kevin Rand,
and you get out the way, Matt, Thomas.
Who was your favorite player on the 1995 UCLA championship team?
Edel Benon.
Edel Bennett.
Come on, man. Ed O. Adol Bannon is a legend to this day, and we see all this NIL stuff going on, and that is because of his impact and the things that he went out and fought for, and he'd be a multi-millionaire if this is his NIL era.
Who had some key free throws for UCLA in a tournament game way back in the day? I can't remember who it was, who it was.
Oh, you're talking. Oh, you're talking so maddy. You're talking so maddy. You know how to talk about it.
Oh, okay. It was right, Hyatt. It was right, Hyatt.
Ryan's with the Space City Home Network.
We are so happy that we're able to openly discuss now the moves.
Give me some, look, I've been telling the audience,
during Finney Smith, his three-point percentage has gotten better every year.
He was an assassin against the Rockets, the last two times the Rockets played them.
Give me a thought or two about him and about what Clint Capella is going to bring to the mix as well.
I love his game.
Finney Smith was a guy that's been on Houston's radar for the way that he defends.
I thought that one of the biggest moves in getting him
showed a real commitment to what E-May would like to do.
He's got size.
So if you go with five big, versatile guys on the floor, he fits.
He plays extremely hard.
And again, he fits culture.
I thought that it was a culture move.
That was big in saying, hey, we're committed to the way that we played last year,
which is huge.
You know, and all of a sudden Houston shows up with all these three-point shooters
or offensive specialists.
I think we'd be in trouble, but keeping the bones of us there.
It's funny, I said this the other day.
I said, you know, Houston hasn't had a threat like Clint Capella since Clint Capella,
a guy who's extraordinary at rolling to the rim, blocking shots and commanding defense.
And that defense was one of the tops in the NBA off of just ball pressure
and walling up on the weak side and not really having a shot blocking presence inside.
Steven Adams brought that towards the end, but, you know, he was trying to, he was still kind of working his way back getting healthy.
So, Mike Capella, they're going to clean up a lot of mistakes from the guards, and that ends up getting scary, you know?
And then with Clint, he's had some injuries problems in the past, we'll be honest.
But the goal is, him and Stephen Adams can try to play one game on, one game off.
Right.
And you get really, really good play at the five position.
And then there's a commitment to that double big lineup that was so big and really featuring our Prince of Ngoon.
All right. Last question for your, Rai. Size up the Western Conference, notably Oklahoma City. I don't even count the Lakers, honestly, unless Luca becomes completely different. Denver, Minnesota. I mean, tell me how sick this is going to be covering these Western Conference teams this year.
It's sick because you get essentially all the teams back and then you get a number of acquisitions.
Denver, I mean, Denver scares me in some ways. Just.
as much as Oklahoma City does
because Cam Johnson was a huge
acquisition. They get healthier
and they get younger.
And I think that they
definitely improve. They got the best player on the planet
undisputedly and Napoleon Yolkich
over there. But the Western Conference,
man, it is as thick as they come.
And I thought the biggest thing
that impressed me about Houston is like
they went out and at some point
during the season beat everybody in the NBA.
They beat the league's best. And that
made you so hopeful moving
into next year and I'm intrigued to see
how Houston plays this season going
from being the hunters to being
the hunt head. And I think just maintaining
that ship on their shoulder, staying
fiery is huge and you
got the experience of Ambleet and
Kevin Durant and me guys like that.
So it's going to be a fun season, guys.
Hey guys, can we start it tomorrow?
I don't even know if you saw this eclipse
circulating to Kevin Durant working out.
And he looks unbelievable.
I mean, he looks better than you
on a game day with your suit on
calling some U of H basketball.
I mean, he looked unbelievable out there, Matt Thomas.
It's close, though.
Hey, Ryan, should we invite Ross
with us to get Habachi soon or no?
Oh, Ross, you're definitely open to invite to Habachi.
Okay, let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. You guys want to go this week?
I'm busy.
Wow. I'll go with you, Ryan.
Let's see. What do I got? All right.
Ryan, I love you like a brother. You know that. Thank you very much for coming
on the show, and I will see you very soon. We will have Batchatchezer.
you in the next 12 to 14 calendar days.
You're buying, though, right?
I love you.
I see later.
That's Ryan Hollins.
Was Ryan running during our conversation there?
Look like he's got a full workout going.
He is, I think, well, didn't you say he does that?
All the time.
Yeah.
This guy keep moving, man.
The best Ryan Hollins for me is we're sitting at dinner, and I think he's talking to us.
He's talking to somebody else.
On his Bluetooth?
On his Bluetooth?
Mm-hmm.
And he can, I think he can mix conversations.
conversations beautifully with two people at one time.
Really?
Yeah.
Like a penis playing with their left hand and their right hand?
And it harmonizing?
Like a drummer who is naturally one side of a hand and plays with the other.
Like a Ringo style.
Or is he?
Hey, five years old today Ringo.
The octopus is golden.
That song sucks.
We're in a yellow submarine.
All right.
1115.
Bottom of the hour.
Thoughts impressed us.
Jonathan Allen is to tell the truth here.
Can't wait.
On sports talk.
Can't wait.
Matt time of show with Ross.
Continues.
We've got to tell the truth.
The Jonathan Allen edition.
Woo.
Coming up at 1130.
Remember to speak slow and announce you, Jonathan?
We'll all get through it.
I'm practicing back here.
Yeah.
See you.
Okay.
That's good.
And we got the news at noon coming up at noon as well.
We have you if you'd like to get in.
Phone lines open at 713-212-5-790.
also have our good friend
Chris Gordy joining the show.
Oh, good's a relative term. He's a great friend.
Okay, you know what, that's, I'm glad you went in that direction.
A great friend and a friend
of the show and a friend of the station.
And such an SEC honk.
That's okay. That's fine.
You gotta take the good with the bad. Nobody's perfect.
We will be quick plug next week.
Dan Matthews and I will be in Atlanta next week
for both SEC Media Days
and the MLB All-Star game.
Did you get credential for the All-Star game?
We did.
Both of you did?
You have to share one pass, no?
Flagship? Well, we got denied one.
And we had to go back and be like, we're the flagship.
And then MLB goes, oh, okay, that's right.
This happens a lot in MLB.
Hey, Astros of the World Series.
We'll give you one credential.
Hey, but we're the flagship.
Okay, two.
Now, will you treat this as a work assignment or a vacation when you go to the Astros playoff games?
It's not vacation.
It's work.
Now, Dan, I mean, Dan will be doing a little bit more of the busting of ass because he's got to get up early.
He's going to be doing the Sean Salisbury show for four hours.
He's going to be helping me at media days.
And then he's going to be zoom in across town over to Truis Park, which isn't close, by the way.
It's on the other side of town.
And he's going to go get some media stuff.
Truis Park, by the way, the home of the Braves, kind of started this new phenomenon, not a phenomenon, but a new theory of don't need to be downtown anymore.
Now it's beautiful.
Cleveland Browns are going for 50 miles outside the city.
Yes.
I'm telling you right now, if they wanted to build, if they built a new.
ballpark in Woodlands or Katie and they built up what they built the battery in Atlanta I'd be there
every day yeah I mean you wouldn't be driving up from where you live to Woodlands every day it would be
there's no way there's so much stuff around it you could make a whole day of it we could broadcast
from out there like that's what's so cool about it the ballpark here I mean no offense
the Texan stadium there's nothing around it you just offended them uh when someone says no offense
the offense comes I can park I mean there's just you know we lost
home plate bar and grill. We lost a lot of stuff that used to be around there.
Like, it's just nothing.
I'm still skeptical that it would work just because of who we are as a town.
Now, they can't get out of it because what? They got a lease for a long time, but the Texans are pushing for it.
They are, but if somebody from the woodlands,
if somebody from the woodlands came up today, a billionaire and said, McNair family, we will pay you whatever X amount of money and build you a brand new stadium.
They would absolutely do it.
I've been telling that to Ross.
I still think the favorite is refurbishing energy, but it's a slight lead.
I think Woodlands is a little far, and I would say, I don't know.
Sugar Land seems a little more feasible.
That's kind of what truest is.
It is a summer of Atlanta.
But how many miles away is it?
15.
Woodlands and downtown is going to be like 30 plus.
Yeah.
That's what I'm saying.
So somebody from Pearland up to Woodlands is going to be what?
it's going to be a lot further.
It's an hour.
Yeah.
And also what's the transportation?
Like transportation here is horrible.
I don't know if what it is in the land.
But you could also live on Woodlands, Spring, Conroe, Kingwood, Attasca Cedar, Cyprus to fill up your, not your venue, but you fill up your office buildings and your party venues.
Yeah.
But all of that is the population of what, like San Marcos or whatever?
Like, why don't we have an NFL team there?
You know what I'm saying?
I'm not trying to, I'm not trying to be that stupid with it.
But you know what I'm saying?
Like, I don't know.
I'm just skeptical.
I just think Houston is not the most passionate sports.
Well, it kind of doesn't matter.
Atlanta is bad way you put it.
Yeah, I just, I think there's going to be some healthy skepticism to say,
why are we going to put a couple of billion dollars into an area that has been dormant of any,
I mean, even on the dome, like, look, I grew up in the dome.
You didn't go on OST before games.
You just didn't.
You didn't.
Holly Hall wasn't a spot to go.
Main Street wasn't.
It's never in the history of our.
city been an area that has had decent economic boom despite the fact you've had Astro Arena,
Astro World, Astro Dump. You had all the different stuff and nobody could really ever build
around it. Yeah, but they have all that land and it's been 20 years and why has, my other question
is then why hasn't that ever been built up? If somebody would invest in Atlanta, you could
build that up. Well, all that to say. You've gentrified so many areas of Houston. The battery
at Atlanta is awesome for anybody who hasn't been there. I mean, you could literally spend all day out
there with shops and restaurants and
sports bars and you walk right out of
there into the ballpark and then when the game's over you walk right
on the ballpark cross the street to the sports bar or whatever
you're going to it's incredible.
Well, Foxborough, where the Patriots play is its own city
because of just the stadium itself.
But also Boston a little bit
more passionate than us here in Houston.
Yeah. But we have areas in Houston like, you know,
Edo. Like 20 years ago
that was just fourth word, we're in the hood.
You don't call it Edo and make it sound cool, right?
Right, right, right. Or near north side is right.
Now they're trying to the north.
That's the North Heights.
Like, no, that's the north side.
That's the ghetto.
Like, you can make, you can turn neighborhoods around.
And it just has never happened there.
It's puzzling to me.
We're just a little different here.
Yeah.
I don't know.
So anyway, it's going to be fun.
All-Star weekend in Atlanta.
Did I hear they're going to be wearing the numbers, Hank Aaron's number?
And somebody told me that, that they're going to, all the players, you're not going to have your number.
You're going to have Hank Aaron's number.
I'm okay with that.
Yeah.
Trying to play a.
pay a little tribute.
I do think they, have they gone back to wearing their normal jerseys too?
That's better than the stupid All-Star jersey.
The warm-up jerseys they wear or the batting practice jerseys are horrific.
Yeah.
It's like they get a 10-year-old, hey, what colors do you like?
Do you know what I, you know, I was telling this audience all the time, I get caught up in the Facebook Reels.
And I'm on a Facebook reel right now that shows All-Star lineups of the 70s.
Okay.
I mean, I could give you the starting lineup.
for the National League in
1974.
Uh-huh.
There are seven
Hall of Famers in the starting lineup
lineup.
Could we,
could we give you
the starting lineup
of the Hall of Fame
of this year's
All-Star game
and have seven
Hall of Famers
on either side?
I don't know.
By the way.
You may have seven
combined,
but never seven,
maybe on one side.
Quick correction,
I meant second word.
But let me look.
Let me look at the old
2000.
Is somebody award
shaming you?
No, but I figured they might.
And I was like,
it doesn't matter.
Okay.
Two 20,
A.L.
Is there a list of the All-Star starters?
Oh, here we go. I have National League.
Jake Myers, Hall of Famer.
Freddie Freeman will be a Hall of Famer.
Okay.
Shoha Tani will be a Hall of Famer.
Done.
Francisco Indoor?
No.
Yes.
Ronald Bacunya.
Yes.
Kyle Tucker.
He's got to do it for a little bit longer.
He's on a good track.
Mani Machado?
I will say yes.
So that's just the NL.
The AL, you've got Aaron Judge.
Absolutely.
Of course.
Vlad Guerrero Jr.
He's got some work to do.
Jose Ramirez?
Yes.
Cal Raleigh.
We'll see.
We'll see.
Needs to see more.
The other ones are a little young.
Riley Green.
I'm going to say no.
Jacob Wilson's a rookie.
Yeah.
Ryan O'Hern.
Javi Baez.
No.
American League's a little weaker.
Yeah, I think, but I think the pitchers.
Well, how about the reserves?
You got Bregman?
Future All the Famer.
You're saying no doubt?
I don't think he's in no doubt.
How many All-Stars he's been to?
I think they're going to look at the rings.
So what?
So overboard.
No, no, no.
That's too much.
There's too many guys that are not in the Hall of Fame that aren't littered with rings.
Julio Rodriguez?
Two-time All-Star Alex Breggman.
Not a Hall of Famer.
Fight me.
What's up? Bobby Wood Jr.?
On the track, yes.
Jeremy Pena?
Not exactly.
Why not?
It'd be nice as he was.
What's his agent?
Scott Boris says, absolutely.
Yes.
Pay about man like a Hall of Famer.
You're probably right.
You're probably right.
There were more Hall of Famers on All-Star Games of years past.
Yeah, and I don't know what that is.
Maybe it's just because I grew up with that generation.
Like, for instance, this is 1976 All-Star Game.
American League All-Stars and had Rod Caroo,
George Brett. Thurman Munson was on a Hall of Fame career until he perished, unfortunately.
Rusty Stobb, I don't think it was a Hall of Famer.
Bobby Gritch, no. National League had Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Johnny Bench,
Dave Concepcion on their starting lineup. Pretty filthy.
But, you know, maybe in 20 years we're doing the exact same conversation.
Yeah, we're going to go Pete Crow Armstrong. Remember him with the Cubs?
Hey, he's having a great year, man.
Yes.
All right. So, Gordy, people are going back to the ballpark.
tonight starting a series with the Cleveland
Guardians who have they won in the last two weeks?
I don't think they're 10 game losing show.
Oh, Lordy.
Just got swept by
Detroit.
Wouldn't it be so Astros?
Shut your bum ass out.
See, I didn't have to finish the sentence, though.
I knew what you were thinking.
I said this on the post game show yesterday, though.
I'm like, Jake Myers got banged up,
left the game early yesterday.
They might out of an abundance of caution,
give him the day off, Jeremy Payne is up.
Like, it's going to be the Sugar Land Space Caval.
out there this week. Don't get it twisted.
Like, they're in a great spot. They're coming home
where they've played well, but I think
they're going into this last week before the All-Star
break gone. You know, we lose four out of six, no big deal.
They probably got home at 1 o'clock this morning.
Probably had a couple of beverages
on the plane. Sure, went out. Slept well.
Yes. Get in the ballpark later.
But if we're going to the ballpark tonight at 7-10, what are we doing?
Hopefully you're grabbing a Crawford-Bock.
Ross and I were out there at Carbark Brewing last
Thursday. Had some nice
brews and some pizza. Yeah, a lot of people came out.
Appreciate you all. I appreciate. John was not there.
That's fine. Got a few people asking where he
was, but we gave out some Astros tickets. How many?
What is a few? One or two or like five or six.
Of people who came out? Yeah. Over ten.
Dozens. That asked about where I was?
Oh, no. We're not talking about you. People that came to see us.
Yeah. But no, it's great to have people out there at Carbock. And hopefully
you're out at the ballpark tonight. Enjoying a Crawford
Bach from Carbock Brewing and listening to
the Crawford Boxcast, Ross and I do with that as well. So, great.
as well, so grab you a Crawford Bach. Let's go asteros.
1971 All-Star Game is coming from my buddy Kevin Ash and Felder.
Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Johnny Bench, Lou Brock, Reggie Jackson, Al-Kaline, Harmon Killebrew.
I mean, my God.
You also had fewer teams.
Yeah, that's true. Everybody needs a representative.
That is true. That's true.
That probably does. Definitely.
So you're saying the quality of baseball was better?
No, I'm not saying. I'm just saying that looking at Facebook Reels watching the introductions,
the lineups of like Hall of Famer, Hall of Fame.
Hall of Very Good Hall of Very Good Hall of Famer. It was pretty incredible.
We'll even go back like 20 years ago where you had Derek Jeter.
I mean, I mean, all those guys became Hallfamers.
All right. We have to tell the truth coming up next.
Jonathan, my expectations are minimal for you, my friend.
Come on, man. That's rude. I got mine run down, so it was good.
All right, let's find out next, Ross.
So, my, night, you're trending about. I never know why you don't know how.
But does our producer, Jonathan Allen, know how to tell the truth?
I don't know.
Everybody ready?
Does he tell his girl the truth all the time?
Oh, girl, you're looking good, baby, girl.
What's up?
We'll give it 85%.
That's pretty good.
All right.
So you have four takes.
Four takes, guys.
And we believe three of them and one of them is a lie.
Is that correct?
Three of the truth?
And there's one.
Just one lie.
This is the first time in the history of this little segment we had that we've very
let the producer do it.
Yes.
This is a little bit of a testing ground here.
I'm scared. We're a little nervous.
I'm ready. I think I can get you guys.
Jonathan Allen here to tell us the truth.
Okay. So my first take, I have Astros, as they are now,
and the culture of Spada has brought into this team,
especially this year, they have proven that they can go all the way this year.
They can go all the way to the World Series.
And I have no doubt in that.
So take number one is you have no doubt the Astros are going to the World Series.
They are going to the World Series. No doubt. Is that your take?
That's my take.
Take number two, Rockets getting rid of Whitmore and putting him to the east with Washington
shows me that the Astros are willing to take everything that comes with this season
if they don't make it to the Western Conference final or further.
Katie only has two years.
Van Blit has two years.
They're really making, like, if they mess up, they mess up and they have to come back to the rebuild stage, in my opinion.
So you meant, you said Astros, you meant Rockets, but what's the exact thing?
What's the take?
So Rockets is Western Conference Finals.
Rockets are willing to, they're going to go all the.
They're going all in.
Everybody are here.
They told everybody in Houston that they're going to go all the way and they're risking it all for this championship.
They're going all in.
Going all in.
And I will repeat these.
I'm right.
Okay.
And this is my third take.
Make sure you're out of it.
After the NBA Finals and this new era basketball coming in with the Pacers and the OKC and how they built their team.
I believe this takes basketball, especially NBA,
away from the superstardom,
away from the, we need these guys to support our superstar, this, this and this.
From super teams?
From super teams, a better term, yes.
And going more about team and strategy and placement, like building through the draft.
I wouldn't say building through the draft,
but during these games, it's not going to be 48 minutes like Thib's doing over there in Nix.
is going to be a lot more strategic in coaching and who plays who and the matchups going in moving forward,
especially how world basketball is playing and we are changing the bat.
You roll all this down?
That's a lot of work.
You wrote down.
I was ready.
So that's my third take and I don't come back to it.
Okay.
Okay, good.
I need a summary of that.
Don't right.
Don't right.
We need a summary of that.
That's okay.
That's okay.
And my fourth take, make sure you're paying attention to it.
Oh, yeah.
First three, we're going to pay attention to you guys.
That's okay.
Ryan Gusto is the most overlooked player on the Astro team.
Okay.
That's my fourth take.
Okay.
He's most overworked or overlooked?
Overlooked.
Overlooked.
He's the most overlooked player on this Astros team.
He is the goat.
Go right.
Take one.
Take one.
Was Astros and how a spot to build this team right now as they are going all the way.
All the way.
Okay.
Rockets getting with a Whitmore.
Tell us everybody in Houston, we're going for the chip and we don't care about the consequences that come
If we mess up, if someone gets hurt, we got to start over again, but they're going for it.
The rockets are all in, okay.
Okay.
After this NBA finals, the league NBA is changing their culture and the way they are going about winning these championships and going further and deeper into the playoffs.
In what way?
As in, coaches are going to put different types of role players on different types of people.
It's not going to be super team after super team after super team.
Okay.
And so you're saying going away from the super team.
All right.
And four, Ryan Gusto is the most overlooked player on this Astros team.
This is easy.
It's easy?
Easy.
Go ahead.
You and I have been Team Gusto all year long.
We had a debate, Ross, about that.
So I know you believe that.
I know you believe that.
I do believe you believe the Astros are World Series caliber.
And I do believe that you think the rockets are showing them they're all in.
So the answer is you don't believe that the quote unquote none,
super team can work. I think you do believe
they still, they should still go
for super teams. The Rockets are trying to build a super team.
They just traded for Kevin Durant. Yeah, that would be the
epitome of trying to build for a super team.
So I think this
building for the draft malarkey is
bogus. You do still believe
if you're going to win an NBA championship, you've got to
build it through a super team. That's what I think you believe.
So I think number three are lying to us.
Number three is, okay, okay. All right, Ross, go ahead.
Ross, what you got? I mean, the rockets are obviously all
in, so I'm throwing two out.
Gusto, I guess I'll trust you on that.
one and that one's kind of raising some red flags for me maybe uh i'll go with number one no i'm not
going to go with number one i just don't want to agree with you so i'm just go with one whatever
all right give me a little drum roll give me a little drum roll let's go now the way this works is
you rule out the ones that neither was picked first okay you picked number three right matt i did
but okay and what's i'm number four ryan gusto of course you guys know i'm a team gusto
Your team guest.
I feel like he's the heart of the Astros.
Heart of the Astros.
Love it.
I love it.
461 ERA.
He is the heart of the Astros, said John the Malad.
4-6-1.
Rock is getting with and we're going on.
We all knew that.
That was a, that was a game.
That was a layup.
Okay.
I believe NBA is changing that.
I believe that this is going to be built to Jackson.
And I believe Rockies right now aren't a super team.
We got KD as a person to lead, but it's not the same as it's going to be as I was
growing up and you guys remember. I don't believe that.
But, and so
my lie was saying that
Ashters as they are now are going
out of the way. And I can be the, I'm going to be the real list here. I'm going to be
the cloud or
whatever you want to say. The wet
blanket. The wet blanket. We don't
have enough pieces. We are going
They need to make a trade. Yes. And we need
to do something because we got so many people injured.
We got, we're not, just because we get this LA
sweep and everybody, they're doing
this. They find the rhythm, yes.
But as we are right now, I don't think
go all the way. I like this. I like this a lot. And that's
your J.K.'s tell the truth.
Oh, yes. All right, Ross. Congratulations.
Thank you, Matt. I think two and three are pretty darn close.
And so that's, uh, that's why I said the opposite. When he added, when he added no doubt,
that's when I was like that. He put that in there to kind of maybe. Okay. All right.
All right, Jonathan. I, I think you're going to be able to do this again.
C plus. My guess is probably in February of next year.
year. Oh, I'll give him a C plus. Yeah, I'll give you more of a C minus. Oh, come on. I'm going
B minus. You know what? I'm going to bring the curve up.
Oh, you're moving the curve up. I got you. I got you. All right. There you go. That was to tell
the truth. John, Alan's style here on the Matt Thomas show of Ross. Speaking of moving up.
Well, who's moving up? All right. I'll try to segue you. You'll see. Let's see. Oh, yeah, we are
moving up. That's what we're going to definitely do here. We have the news
at noon come up. We're going to play our song at noon?
We're ready to go. Oh, my God.
I restarted my computer. We're good.
That's good. It's good. All right. 7-1.
By the way, can we come back?
Something happened last night. I didn't even know about it until after it was done.
And I'm on time of my love life.
7-13. 2-2-790. 7-1-3-2-5-790.
Moving on up.
All right, we've got the news at noon coming up in about to 10 minutes from now.
We've got a little bit of a musical tribute to what the Astros did in Los Angeles the last
handful of the days against the Dodgers.
So I tease this before the break.
There is something that happened here in town yesterday
that would never have been top of mind to me ever, Ross.
But I didn't even know what even happened here in town
until after the event was completed.
Oh, okay.
Go ahead.
The Gold Cup final was played last night at NRG Stadium.
Okay, I did know that.
I follow soccer more closer than you do.
But even as a, I mean, I'm a sports fan.
Even if it was, again, I'm not following this weekend soccer.
I don't listen.
We don't bring up soccer.
I don't peruse soccer websites.
You're not listening to the I-Heart soccer podcast.
No, and that's fine.
But my point is, is that, and it didn't, it was sold out, but let's face it, my guess is it was
very few, it was USA versus Mexico.
right? My guess is the crowd was
significantly in favor of Mexico.
I don't know that. I don't know.
I don't know. I only caught the highlights.
So if anybody went to the game last night,
what would you say the crowd's
spin was on this?
It was probably a lot of... I mean, my initial
guess would be 50-50, but I don't know.
And maybe they did
market the Hispanic audience.
And which again, I'm not listening to Hispanic TV or radio
station. Because I don't understand what they're saying.
Have you seen the hotties on those shows?
I mean, I might look at it on mute, but I'm not saying
I'm watching this tennis match right now.
I'm mute and I'm having zero problem with it.
This is the women's round of 16 match.
You're very invested.
I believe there's a couple of semifinal winners right here.
We're not even talking about the game.
All right.
My point is this.
I didn't even know it was happening in our town.
And I was at home all weekend.
I didn't see a commercial for it.
Your son didn't tell you?
I didn't see five, six, and ten.
I didn't see Sports Center live from there.
I mean, I think it was a Fox Sports One event.
I think it was a regular fox, right?
Or no?
It may have been regular Fox, but some of the stuff was on FS1 before.
Usually you have a...
I even know when, like, major European friendlies take place
that the stadium was full of it.
I legitimately did not know.
Okay.
And I wondered if the average fan knew there was a...
What would you put Gold Cup in terms of importance?
Oh, it's low.
I mean, the Euro's and...
Europe or better. The Coppa America
is bigger. This is like
it's down the list. Like if the Savannah
bananas were playing at Dykin
opposite the Gold Cup, what would have gotten more
attention from the local news media? Probably the Savannah bananas.
I guess. I don't know. I don't watch local news so I can't speak to that.
I'm just about in general. I'll tell you what's a bigger deal. The Concord can't have gold
cups a bigger deal. Certainly when it's USA, Mexico and the final. I'm sure it is.
Certainly when it's USA, Mexico in the final as well, which is the big rivalry.
And USA, while they lost two to one, it really wasn't that close.
What happened?
They just got, you know.
Two to one indicated close men.
They just got closely.
They got old play.
Yeah, but I mean, yeah, you can have a two to one baseball game, but a bunch of people had a bunch of it.
You know, they had a lot.
I'll put it this way.
Mexico had a lot more traffic on the base pass.
They did.
Yeah.
All right.
So if anybody went yesterday, tell me what it was like to be there.
if it was, I mean, obviously they had a full stadium.
I think the announced tenants was $70,000.
Mexico, USA was the dream.
If you're putting together this event, that's the dream final.
Obviously, it's the easiest way to sell it out and, well, sell a lot of beers and whatnot.
But I legitimately did not know about it until, because if USA would have, if they would have played it in, say, Kansas City, I wouldn't have cared too since.
But I thought, wow, this is pretty big for you.
Yeah, you should have gone.
Well, I wasn't going to do that because the Astros were on.
But I just thought it was weird that a relatively big national sporting event was in our community,
and I had no idea.
It was even going to be there.
A full stadium.
Yeah, they didn't need me.
Yeah, it's like I didn't know Keshe was coming into town.
I've known about Keshe for quite some time.
Was that on the list of tickets you got?
Did you get a list from your daughter?
Like, I did.
Get me all these tickets now.
Yeah.
My 17-year-old living a beyond charmed life.
She went from a cruise to a week in Dallas playing volleyball to now being.
She was in the Hill Country, fortunately not involved with the rivers and stuff,
but she was hanging out with her buddies for three or four days.
And then she's coming back here to, then we're going to Rhode Island next week.
So you might be the number one dad, Matt.
Wow.
Matt Thomas has a lot of faults.
And I talk about many of them on this show.
Yes, you do.
He is an excellent, loving, caring father.
He gives his children the world.
I do whatever I can.
And I am number one day.
Remember we had to talk about father's day a few days?
No, I'm going to give you that.
Thank you very much.
I am the greatest dad of all time.
I'm like, I'm smiling over here.
Like, you know what?
They're all right.
You're all right, Matt.
Oh, my goodness.
I love my kids.
They're good.
All right.
1157 is the time.
So the phone lines are not lit with people that went to the gold cup yesterday.
That's okay.
Now, not that gold cup, by the way.
We're all talking about the gold cup at the state.
Well, that one shut down.
Oh, did it really?
After a couple of raids.
You hear that.
not that I've ever gone
I believe you went to a gold cup
before or after a station event
it was after the 10,000
10,000 at Hooters
I'm sorry, Mooters?
At Mooters, yeah.
There was a listener
who said they'd pay my cover
and they did
and drinks
and the he did
I threw up on myself
that's fine
in the cab on the way home
oh so you wind up having to pay
an extra fee, correct?
No, the guy kicked me out
I don't even want to talk about any of this.
I move on.
It was younger.
It was in my younger days.
I mean, I had to be, I was in my 20s for sure.
When was it 10,000?
30.
10,000 went pretty quick.
20,000 in a little work.
30 was a lot of work and then they'll never be a 40.
So just saying.
I was in my 20s.
I was a producer.
It was gullible.
At that point in my life, when this is the problem.
We went to the thing and everybody was like,
Ross, I want to buy you a shot.
Let's do some shots.
I was like, oh, yeah, let's go.
Four shots later, like in 20 minutes.
It was a bad night.
I had a big headache.
And then I saw it.
Then I had to call an Uber because my other option was just to walk several miles to my hotel room.
That wasn't going to happen.
That's the best option.
Walking to your hotel room in a violent rage of vomit?
I had to get the vomit off my pants, so hopefully I didn't smell too bad.
I got a five-star ride out of it.
So I guess I got most of the vomit smell off me somehow.
and it was a quick Uber
and then I went home and
threw up some more in the hotel room
at the
mixed ended May
you did spare no expense
I was making $10 an hour
10?
Who do we like here? Do we like Andrever or
Navarro or do not care? I think I do like them both.
I think I do like them both. I don't have to change this.
This is good. I like putting Lauren Shahati on.
All right, lots of highlights.
Let me watch some Wimbledon and we get to the second
third hour of the Matt Tava show at Ross.
like to join us to celebrate the Astros win. We'll do it next. 713-212-5-790.
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Oh, we do love L.A. Beautiful people, Rodeo Drive, and the Astros sweep the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Astros have played, obviously, the Dodgers a lot. They were NL West teammates for many, many, many years.
So it's not like it's uncommon for the Astros to have success at Dodgers Stadium, but it happens
now every other year, which is kind of,
I do like the unbalanced, or, yeah,
it has unbalanced because you play different teams
every year, so it's good.
Astros win, 20 games above
500. Wow.
And something called Zach Shorthead three hits
yesterday. Yes.
And Bennett Sousa gets people out.
Ryan Gusto was good. Ryan Gusto was
great. We are your official Ryan Gusto
station. Yes, we
are. And we're hopeful that Jake Myers,
is it a quad? Is that what I heard?
Was it a quad or CAF? I can remember.
What is one of those?
Something in his leg.
May he had a nice flight home resting comfortably?
Hopefully.
And don't want to add anybody else the injured list because it feels like that list is immense.
Yeah, right calf, tightness.
Oof.
I have right calf tightness.
What's worse?
Tightness every day.
Tightness, soreness, or discomfort?
I think tightness seems like the best.
No, soreness is the best.
Owry, sore.
Oh, tight.
Oh, I can't move.
I've heard elbow soreness.
Discomfort is another word for.
Would you rather hear elbow tightness,
soreness or discomfort?
Soreness?
I'm going tightness.
Soreness, I can get ibuprofen and knock it out.
Tightness, you can loosen it up.
Tightness.
It's hard to maneuver.
We all can agree.
You don't want discomfort.
Discomfort's the last one by far.
Let us present to you at 1207, the news at noon.
And with that,
we go to the news desk for sports surveys there
to handle all the top headlines. Yes, Matthew, as you'll mention, the Astros, destroying the Dodgers in a three-game sweep over the weekend in 18-to-1 victory, starting things off on Friday. It was incredible as they just continue to win, despite all the injuries piling up, the latest of which, as you mentioned, the calf tightness with Jake Myers. Hopefully he does not miss much time. And also the historic win for the Astros, the biggest in Dodgers.
stadium as you mentioned.
And the Astros, as a team met, we talked about the pitching and how it's been carrying the squad.
Team OPS in Major League Baseball is up to eighth.
Eighth.
How?
Why?
Who?
More importantly.
Well, Christian Walker, waking up.
Big road trip for him.
Jose L. Tuve's got his season OPS up to 788.
Last year he had a great number, 790.
This year, 788.
So a little bit of the slippage that we were talking about,
hopefully is not there.
He'd had a huge weekend in Dodgers Stadium where they were booing him.
And, of course, we also discussed Oral Hersheiser talking about the Astros and the whole,
it feels like they know what's coming.
That was, I've run out of things to talk about because my team sucks.
Yeah, I could agree with that.
Also, you have the American League All-Stars named Jeremy Pena, an all-star.
Will he play?
Nope.
Seems like he wants to.
I know he wants to, but needs to be told you're not going to.
Of course, that would be his natural reaction.
As soon as you got a name, are you playing?
Well, of course, I want to play.
I want to get out there.
You have, of course, Hunter Brown named as an all-star.
Josh Hader as an all-star.
No Framber Valdez, no Jake Myers as an All-Star, Matt, your reaction?
Frombert to me is the one that's going to get the ad.
I don't believe Jake Myers will make it.
Jake's had a very good season and has obviously career type numbers for the Astros.
But I don't think Jake carries a lot of cachet around Major League Baseball.
He might if he becomes the World Series MVP in 2025.
Don't be a hater, Matt.
Belly, so many people have asked me about this.
And we've got to get the bottom line on this with Jake.
That damn helmet on his falls off every single time now.
Yeah, I was saying it's
It's been a running joke for a few years now,
but it feels like it's getting worse.
Yeah.
Does he just have like a tall head so the helmet's too wide,
or is it?
It doesn't seem like he's got a fat head.
Like a Mike Napoli, if you will.
Mm-hmm.
But why?
I mean, even on like walking at first base, it falls off.
Yeah.
It doesn't, but you don't know.
You get my drift.
It comes off often when he swings?
Yeah.
I don't know.
going on.
That would, wouldn't that irritate you if you were, if your hat kept falling off?
Whatever he's doing is working.
Maybe it's a magical hat.
It could be.
All right.
It could be on.
Let's see, Matt.
Novak Djokovic grind out a win today at Wimbledon to reach the final eight.
Your thoughts?
And Drava leads 6-2-1 over Navarro.
I frankly don't care who wins.
Both are winners in my book.
And also yesterday was the 7th.
year anniversary of the historic
Roger Federer versus Raphael Nadal
Wimbledon final. It went into
16 games of the fifth set. Where were you?
I was watching it. I don't remember where exactly it was. I'm going to assume that I was
watching it too. When I was a kid and younger adult, you said 16 years ago?
Yeah, 17. 17?
Breakfast in Wimbledon was kind of a
not a automatic, but if you
you got up on a Sunday morning and it was 8.39 o'clock in the morning, you'd watch it.
Many people calling it the greatest match of all time.
That was 17 years ago today.
And also, of course, in the news of noon, I guess it's news we already knew, Matt,
but it is official.
Kevin Durant is a Houston rocket as part of a seven-team deal.
Rockets, Hocs, Nets, Warriors, Lakers, Timberwolves, Sons.
And we will go through all fastest of that trade on the show today.
We don't have to.
No, I don't think we're going to.
No, we don't have to.
And unfortunately, Kevin Durant and,
company are not going to have any sort of media availability, probably prior to training
camps. So we will not really hear, I'm excited to be here until it's literally time for start
a training camp. Yes. Kevin Durant said he could not make it. He will be on Twitter arguing
with people. I did call him my new bestie, hoping that he would retweet or like, hey, what's up,
man? Good to have you. Nice to be here with you. Needing to respond. That's okay. I'm sorry.
Do you follow him? No. I'll follow athletes.
I want you follow him if you want him to tweet you.
I retweeted him so he knows I retweeted him.
What if he follows you?
I'll follow him back.
You follow him and mute him.
I can't do that.
It's fine.
And that's your news and news.
Thank you very much.
By the way, a lot of people are sending us tweets.
You and I are both getting the same.
Yeah.
The crowd at the game yesterday was heavy, heavy team Mexico over team USA.
And Mexico.
Yeah, like I said, my first guess I'm stupid.
Dream shake says Mexico.
Mexico in the audience
was what people are saying 90 to
10. Dreamshek says
90 to 10. Steven says he
80 to 20. Still huge. And I think
she was there because he said fun atmosphere.
Not much for USA fans to cheer about.
But why do y'all think it's not advertised like
you think, as it should be? Because I don't think they needed
us. Yeah, they sold it out.
71,000. It was a 71,000
sellout. And what were
the chances of USA being there to begin
with? Not great. Pretty good? No, I think
I mean, I think this was the chalk final.
Okay, so
But they obviously
spent their advertising dollars
on probably the Spanish-speaking audience.
Perhaps.
Look, let's just be honest.
Soccer's not huge here.
It's just not.
They're the 16th ranked team in the world
and it's not a huge passion for the sport.
For whatever reason,
it's just never really caught on in a huge way here.
Attendance around the country was down.
I was watching that shootout in Minneapolis
last Sunday
and the upper deck was empty
maybe it's not you maybe it's USA soccer that just doesn't draw
that if you put any
if you would have put
could
would Argentina been over there
oh my God yes a lot of Argentina
I mean they've won multiple World Cups
Spain I mean they've also won World Cups
and euros and stuff like that yeah they all have a better history
what's the best finish for the United States?
States in a World Cup history, making the final
16, I think, or maybe the final eight?
So it
almost feels like, and again, I don't want to, I'm
certainly speaking on a turn here, that
maybe if you're these U.S. events
stadiums that are hosting these events, maybe you
want not a USA team there.
Well, as you knew Mexico was going to draw here. As long as Mexico's in there, yeah.
Yeah. I'm trying to look at the
yeah. Like if USA
would have taken on Canada here yesterday,
what would the crowd have been? I'm going to
I don't know.
You're telling me 90, 10 or 80, 20?
I'm curious what United States, Guatemala and St. Louis was.
And United States, Costa Rica and Minneapolis, it looked half full if that.
That's what I'm saying.
That's when I watched.
And then, yeah, let me just look at Guatemala.
So if you're a World Cup Stadium, do you not want Team U?
My, World Cup's a little different.
That's the flag wearing and whatnot.
What?
Semi-final United States,
Guatemala,
22,423.
And where was this?
Energizer Park?
That's a soccer-specific stadium.
20,000.
But where was that?
What city?
St. Louis.
Okay, so that's, that they didn't put it in the dome.
Or they didn't put it at Bush Stadium.
No.
So, I mean, my guess is, I'm not, I've never been to St. Louis to soccer stadium.
But I'm guessing that's probably sell out, right?
I'm going to guess.
I'm going to hope.
I don't know.
All right.
12-16 is our time.
There's your soccer report for the day.
The Astros are 20 games above 500.
I brought this up very early in the show today,
and I want you to see if you guys can come up with a good example of this.
I mentioned very early today that in the history of covering Houston sports
and talking about Houston sports teams,
has there ever been a team that has given you
such a surprise. For instance, a team that you thought was good in the NFL was going to win 12 games,
won up losing 12, a baseball team that you thought was going to lose 100 that won 100,
or a Rockets team that you thought was going to win 55 that lost 55.
Basically, the plot to Major League.
Exactly. Is this the greatest, most, not the greatest, is this the most surprising season
ever in Astros history? We'll debate that next. 1216, Sports Talk 790.
1222 sports talk 790
Matt and Ross with you here
we
take our jobs very seriously
our job is on a very serious one
does that make sense to you sports Harvey
I would agree with that
most of the time we do
appreciate you guys spend in part or hopefully all of your day with us
on this station this show in particular
and
very rarely do we ever
step outside of sports, but just again, Ross and I was talking off air.
The Kerr County flood relief, the devastation of the last few days.
It has been on our minds constantly.
Sports, as I mentioned on Twitter earlier this weekend is a great diversion.
Does it mean we can't, that we're going to turn a blind eye to the folks?
And our website, sports 790.com, has a direct connection to a Kerr County flood relief fund
that I would like for you guys if you are willing and able to do so.
If you can contribute, that would mean a lot.
I have made my donation.
I am just absolutely, and as many,
I'm going to assume that every single person in the sound of my voice is in the same spot,
the Kirk County and what happened at the Camp Mystic over the weekend and the
devastation, just about as sad of a story as you possibly can have.
And there's nothing more than we can say that we're sorry if you've been affected,
If your friends and family have been affected,
if you know some of those affected,
we sent our deepest, deepest condolences.
And if you can help on any way,
the Kirk County Relief Flood Relief Fund
is through the community foundation
of the Texas Hill Country,
and you can click on it directly at our website
at Sports790.com.
And if you can do that and spare a little bit of change,
we greatly thank you for that.
Yeah, you go to the website and scroll down a little bit,
and it's right there on the left.
It's in red, and it's a direct link.
Yeah. So we're here to take you away from that, but we ain't forgetting about it.
And just absolutely, and my daughter never went to camps.
My sons went to camps, but they didn't go there.
They went up in the northeast around Lake Livingston.
So, I mean, it could happen, frankly, I didn't even like, but just unbelievably tragic, tragic story.
And we think about you guys, if you've been affected by it or your friend, if you've not been.
We're just thinking about Kirk County.
And anything you can do to donate would be greatly appreciated.
All right, 1225, Sports Talk, 798.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
713-212-5-7-90.
If you want to chime in on the conversation, you may do so.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
We have, believe it or not, today coming up,
which I've already done at Ringo Star.
I did it last night.
Really?
You're fired up.
I was going to say some.
Sunday nights used to be an awesome night of television.
Help me out here.
Sopranos on Sunday night?
I think so.
Game of Thrones was Sunday night.
Game of Thrones.
My curb was on Sunday night.
Yes.
It's always a big night for HBO stuff.
Sunday nights used to have going back many, many years.
Did Succession come on Sunday nights?
Succession, I think, was a Sunday night.
I'm trying to get into the TV of like some comedies when I was a kid.
The Jeffersons were on Sunday nights.
I thought was a funny show.
Alice, I'm just going to get an example of shows.
Sunday Night was a really good TV night.
And then in the 1990s, ESPN brought a Sunday night baseball.
And that to me, and I'm segueing to sports here, that was the game of the week.
John Miller still does the Giants games.
Great booming voice, really authoritative.
And Joe Morgan, excellent analyst.
If your team got picked for Sunday night game of the week, that was a big freaking deal.
Yes.
Yeah, it's just the multitude of options.
It is.
It's everything.
All the streaming services.
I mean, even just you, you know.
But even so, there's even, I guess,
as you don't have to time anything anymore.
You just, if you want to watch what you want to watch,
you find that on Netflix who gives it to you on a regular basis.
And you know what you can also do?
I tell myself, like, I didn't watch the Gold Cup final yesterday.
I'm like, I'll just catch the extended highlights.
The extended highlights are your friend,
but also like you kind of miss a lot of the game.
It's obviously better to watch the whole game.
But sometimes you're like,
I just watch the highlights when I get home.
See, you can do that on you.
And now, you know, everybody's TV.
If you had a smart TV, it's got the YouTube app on it,
and you just click that, and then you plop on there.
And then before you know it, three hours have passed.
And you're watching the extended highlights of the 2008 Wimbledon Federal Nidal match.
Maybe that was just me.
Yeah.
So last.
A lot of options, yeah.
Yeah.
So last night they had the Sunday night baseball game on.
And I'm trying to see.
It was Rangers Padres?
There was two of them.
There was the Cubs and the Cardinals, too.
Okay. Chicago was up 10-0. And I'm watching the video right now.
There's a cardinal pitcher that struck out a Cubs batter. Strike three usually means end of inning.
Guys are walking off the field. Hey, that's all the Cubs could do in this inning. We'd go to the next inning here on ESPN.
Uh-huh.
Carl Ravich didn't say a word as the guys are walking off the mound.
Really? The Cub batter goes back to the dugout.
Is Mike Shortout?
No.
He obviously was confused and he said as much, he thought there were only two strikes.
What was the bad one he did recently?
He thought a ball got, he was like, this ball's crushed and it was like a lazy phone.
No, no, what he did is he called a home run.
That what he thought was a game winner.
It was the top of the end.
That's what it was.
Oh.
That was bad.
That was really bad.
So let me tell you something.
Can you get caught up in a mistake?
Yes, you can.
I have done it.
And you can also see why a your mistake.
Yeah, cover your ass is what he's saying.
Yes.
Oh, I didn't get it, thank you.
The easy perception is if they're walking off the mound to go to the dugout.
Yes.
And the batter is going back to the dugout.
And the other team is grabbing their gloves to go back on the money.
That probably meant that was the end of the inning.
What is he?
Was he on his phone?
What is he doing?
I don't know.
Put your phone down, Carl.
But it just gave you another example of how so many things in television and sports are awesome in television and
general, as you mentioned, all the options, the Apple, the Netflix.
But there is a part of me that was like, damn, there had nothing to do last night.
And I'm watching a crappy game on ESPN with announcers who shouldn't be doing the game of the week because they can't even figure out when strike two or strike three was.
I'm not even trying to be funny.
Like, should he be, it gets like, go through some kind of cognitive checks?
I was just going to say that.
Because, I mean, matter of fact, I'm going to, I'm going to send you the audit.
And look, let me tell you something.
I have made boneheaded mistakes myself.
I'm just going to fly out to you.
What, though?
I mean, how, what is this egregious?
Like, okay, you call a two-pointer or a three-pointer because the foot was on the line.
I mean, whatever, that's forgivable.
Yeah.
But calling something a walk-off when it's the top.
That is like, you wouldn't expect rookie ball play-by-play guy to do that.
Jonathan, I just sent you the email.
I want you to play the sound when you let us.
Give us a thumbs up on this.
But I was like, what?
How?
I don't know.
You're on network television doing the game of the week.
You're not doing high school baseball?
Here's the sound real quick.
Just tell me if I'm missing something.
Yeah.
Misinterpreting this.
That was strike three.
Cardinals are walking off.
Cole.
Everybody's coming off the field,
I thought that was the second strike,
but apparently that was strike number three,
because both sides are in.
their dog-ups.
I'm looking at you.
That's it.
He's looking at his partner for it.
And in baseball as well.
Don't 100, 1,000 out of 1,000 baseball play-by-play guys score the game as they're going along?
Yeah, not necessarily every pitch, but a lot of guys do do to every pitch.
I don't.
Well, he thought it was strike too.
But then, yeah, okay.
So I guess it was strike fine.
Weird.
So what I would do.
And again, I get two seconds here.
there are some angles that I can't see very well when I'm calling a basketball game.
But if I know a shot was missed or a shot was made because the shot was inbound,
the shot was made, which means it was made.
Yes.
If the shot wasn't inbound and they were running in the direction really quickly.
Context clue.
Context clue is everything.
That was a painfully obvious context clue.
I'm actually worried about them.
If you ever catch me really losing my fastball, you've got to tell me because, man, that was a,
tough. We'll talk during the break. Oh, geez. You're awful.
All right. I asked me a question. The best winning
of Houston sports history, the most surprising Houston winning
moments are happening with the 2025 Houston Astros.
Argue with me. Or can you? I don't think you can.
713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-7-90.
1236. The PM here on Sports Talks.
790.
On the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Ross, Vee. I'm Matt Thomas with you.
Phone lines open if you'd like to get in.
713, 212, 5790.
713, 212 5790.
Astros sweeping the Dodgers over the weekend.
20 games above 500.
7 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners.
And you can't even say, like, before you'd be like,
all right, whatever.
The Mariners are like below 500.
around 500. Who cares? They're winning a weak division. Yes, a division is weak.
Rangers are below 500. Angels and A's, of course, are below 500. But the Mariners are 48 and 42.
That's not terrible. That is still in the position of being the third wild card in the American
League West. So it's not, while they are running away with a overall bad division, the Mariners are
pretty good. They're positioned to be in the playoffs right now. And you are 20 games above 500,
seven games ahead of them.
And as I mentioned, I was mind-blown when I saw this earlier,
and we talked about it at the news of noon.
Eighth and Team OPS with no Yordon and everybody underperforming as much as they have.
I just don't get it.
You do that on Thursday?
Yeah, you do them on Thursdays, Ross.
Okay, I'm sorry.
I have it, I just don't get it.
I'm going to start sending you hour-by-hour notes, even when I'm off.
Okay.
You should, actually.
It wasn't my fault.
I thought it was, look.
Jonathan, whose fault is it?
July 3rd felt like a Friday.
It just did.
All right.
I will say this, it did.
It was a really fun show.
It was, you know.
How was the show quality?
Gordy was incredible and I give Gordy and A and myself a seat.
So you guys are on location.
Yeah, we're at Pizza and Pints.
Okay.
We may be in a location this Thursday.
I'll tell you good pints, good pizza.
Okay.
Over with the Pizza Pites.
At Carbock Brewing,
sponsor of the Crawford Boxcast for free on the I Heart Radio app.
All right. So let's go back to answer my question.
Okay.
Is this the most stunning season in Houston sports history?
It has to complete.
All right. Again, we're setting this up.
This is the most surprising team I've ever been around in talking about Houston sports.
Is there another team that we're missing out on?
713-212-5-790.
This is the most surprising team.
From a team that spent, what, six weeks playing win one, lose one.
win one lose one, win one, lose one.
To a team that's had all the injuries from pitching to the hitting.
And they're 20 games above 500.
Yeah, I will again go to the 08 Rockets.
That was insane when they won 22.
It's like this team, because every other team they were on the list with was like the 72 Lakers.
And what was it, the Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Bucks or something like that?
It was crazy the list.
They are, have you ever seen that meme where it's like four soul?
and then a guy in a clown suit.
That's basically what the rockets are on that list.
It's like all the greatest teams of all time.
And then the 2008 rockets?
What is this?
What's happening?
And they were really good when they were healthy,
but they just weren't a contender.
And we'll see.
Obviously, the Astros are American League.
I wonder what the betting odds are.
Probably Detroit and then the Astros as far as favorites.
Can I, I don't want to be a Debbie Downer to a small extent.
Oh, geez.
Oh, here we go.
Go ahead.
But if they're going to,
walk away with this division and compete for a one or two see in america league the expectations now
are so astronomical that ross if they lose in the division series i'll be devastated
because you worked your ass off with all these ailments and all these guys you never heard of
in your life that are winning these games if you peter out in a five game division series you
That's cruel to us.
That's not fair.
Hunter Fraubber 1-2?
I ain't worried about it.
You need...
Arrogatti 3.
Who's Spencer Arrogati?
He's a really good pitcher with a broken thumb.
Who's been gone for when?
How long?
Months.
Yeah.
Who's this Jordan Alvarez you speak of?
What's the latest on that?
Actually, we have a Dana Brown cut.
we're supposed to get 48.
What happened to 48 hours?
How many hours is a bit?
Dana talked on that.
Oh, that's right.
We did get it.
That's right.
Do we have a sound bite on it?
On Sunday.
We have it?
You're on updates and next steps.
So this is an exciting time for us, and I would tell you because of this.
When he went in for more imaging, you know, the pain was not related to the fracture.
The fracture is a non-factor right now.
That's a good thing.
The pain was related to some inflammation.
He received two shots, and he's feeling better and better each day.
The first thing is we'll get a bat in his hand and get him to start taking a little dry swings just to see how that feels because the pain is pretty much gone right now.
And so once he starts to take those dry swings, we'll get them off the tea, we'll do some soft toss.
And then, of course, we'll get them off the machine.
And then at that point, we'll make a determination what the next plans are.
that can all happen pretty quickly, you know, in the near future.
But the thing is he's feeling a lot better.
And once he starts to take some dry swings, we'll know a lot more.
Can I say something real quick?
Yes.
As an athlete, and it's really, and every time I hear about this topic, it really irks me.
He just said that the fracture is still there, inflammation is there, and we're going to take dry swings still?
I don't even know.
I've never heard of my entire life.
I know what a dry swing is.
I just haven't heard it ever discussed.
Let me tell you something.
My dating life is in my 20s
with a lot of dry swings.
Yeah.
If you know what I'm saying.
It's unfortunate.
Thank God I've found Kim in 1997.
Dryness and...
All right.
I'm a little worried.
Go ahead.
That was...
That was...
Pretty swoon.
I'm doing my air quotes.
It's radio, but I'm doing air quotes.
Pretty soon.
Near future.
That's September.
first to me.
You know what?
As long as it's by October 1st.
I don't care.
See, I think he needs, I don't think you can't, you can't, you can't be as gone as long
as October 1st and expect him to contribute at all.
Well, I'm not going to, look, I'm just saying as long as he's there.
Okay.
Yeah.
I would say.
We don't know.
I don't know.
You're not a doctor.
I'm not a hand specialist.
Well, I'm going to act like one for the next 12 seconds.
I'm going to tell you that.
There is a kind of hand specialist.
I'm going to tell you that he needs to be on the field by September the first.
He needs a month of swinging.
Okay.
And not dry swinging.
I'm talking about the real wet ones.
1243.
Easy peasy.
This Friday can be fun.
We're going to be on this Friday, too.
We're actually going to be on air.
I know.
You'll be stunned by this.
I'll be able to say it's Friday and it actually be Friday.
1244 on the bad taboo show with Ross.
Donnie and Tombo on socks of Astros.
We'll get to him.
We'll get to the rest of you.
Come on and be a part of the show.
Your squad's 20 games above 500.
And they're doing it without.
Jordan Alvarez and the dry swings.
And no a regetti.
And no Javier.
What's the opposite of a dry swing?
A wet swing.
Like what's it?
You know what a dry rib, dry rub is, right?
What do you call a rib that's not dry?
Glazed.
I don't know.
I walk that back to you.
I don't think so.
Yeah, you glaze it.
You do?
Okay.
That sounds fine.
Hey, you never glazed ribs?
I have never cooked ribs.
before.
Oh.
Okay.
I'm about to have a river right now.
Look at the 3-21 methods.
Very easy.
Okay.
Hey, let's tell you about the Shell Federal Credit Union.
I'd really appreciate if you would get away from this conversation.
I'm talking about something more important.
And by getting yourself a chance to win $5,000.
We thank you again for spending part of your day with us here on the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross.
Believe it or not, today is all things about Ringo's Star.
85 years young.
And Ross, we want to take care of our 12 o'clockers.
I'm going to give you one of the questions.
Love it.
And we also should know what great prizes we have.
Jonathan, what's our price?
Give us the question and then he'll give us the question.
I was going to hopefully give you the question.
Oh, okay.
Well, you're both stalling.
Okay.
Well, you both stall while you can follow me on Instagram.
I wouldn't do that.
At Sports RV.
Oh, I saw your account is getting up there a little bit.
Yeah, I know.
I'm trying to follow everybody back.
I was begging for followers on Twitter.
I'm trying to build it up.
We're up to 924.
I'm following everybody back.
I got you guys on the prizes.
In the next 10 minutes,
everybody who follows me, I'm following you back.
Here's my question.
Then we'll give you the prizes.
Here's the one.
Ringo's favorite meal is pizza.
But he says he only gets it on USA tours
because British pizza is, quote, rubbish.
Made up.
That's a knot.
That's a knot.
Oh, I would have said, believe it.
He's never had pizza before in his life.
Hmm.
There you go.
To this day?
Why?
He says most of the ingredients he's allergic to.
Oh, okay.
Is he gluten-free, lactose intolerant?
He's got gout so we can't have pepperoni.
One question I did not put.
I don't want to mix it up.
But yeah, there's your freebie right there.
You do another freebie.
Oh, I was not in the next hour.
And if you guys get this right, of course, you get the Sports Talk 790 T-shirt.
Oh, yeah.
Of course.
You can put that one last every day.
And we got a pair of tickets to see psychedelic furs live on July 10.
They're back?
At the House of Blues.
Or is this the same tour?
The psychedelic furs are you doing a residency at the House of Blues?
They might get the same one, but you know.
Woo!
Huge tickets coming up.
Yes.
What's your favorite psychedelic furs song, Matt?
It is...
This is going to be tough for me to say.
Okay, go ahead.
Underneath the apple tree.
Okay.
Mine is a stand by me.
It is not.
It's not.
All right, to the phones.
Donnie and Tomball.
Thanks for waiting, Donnie.
you're on 790. Good afternoon.
Good afternoon. Yeah, I was going to say the only team I can think of that might be
either as surprising or more surprising than the Astros this year is the Astros that got
in the paper as though they were dead.
And they had that massive comeback.
That's a good one.
Yeah, that's really good.
05.
Thank you, Donnie.
That's a great one.
They put a literal headstone.
When the Chronicle puts a headstone out and they wind up winning the division,
was a division or wild card?
I don't really matter.
05, do they get in as a wild card?
I think so.
They played the Cardinals.
No, they beat the Cardinals to win the National League that year.
When was the Headstone?
04 or 05?
I thought it was 05 and then was that the AL, the NLD?
These are all running together.
They beat the Cardinals.
That was when Lidge gave up the home run to Poole-Hull sent it to game 7.
Oswald wins game seven.
Yes
And when the
Was the Chris Burke walkoff
Was that? Was that 04 or 05?
04, I want to say
The Burke walk off
Okay
And I want to say
Did they beat the Cardinals in 6?
Because didn't they have to go back
To St. Louis to win
So it was 6.
Yeah, they could have
Beating the Cardinals in 5
And the Burke was also 05
Against the Braves.
So Chris Burke can do squat in 04?
I don't know what he did.
You know the hardest thing about that for me was
I was moving from Houston to Salt Lake City
in the middle of the playoffs.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
My boss is like,
tell me,
are you going to cover this team?
When you move to Salt Lake City,
I was like, man,
I'd give you my two weeks,
and I'm going to stay for four.
Bye.
Yeah.
That's why we're in this business, though.
Playoffs.
That's where it gets fun,
the energy.
Oh, you can't beat it.
Wednesday night against the Rockies,
I'm okay.
I told us to Carly today.
I said,
Carl and I said, you know, the Rockets are a heavy favorite to go to the NBA
finals, not heavy favorite, but they're one of the favorites to go to the NBA finals.
I said, I might miss your high school graduation.
She's like, what? I said, do you know?
That's fine.
She's like, we'll FaceTime you win.
She's going to walk across the stage.
I said, there's some positives to me working in these games.
Yeah.
And I told her with the positive where she's like, Dad, you'll be missed.
Yeah.
You'll beef up that graduation present.
Yeah, I mean, we're going to Hawaii next year.
So I said, we've got to make.
make sure that works for those games.
Let's talk to Vince on 7 out of a 1255.
Hi Vince.
Hey, good afternoon.
Hey, one team that I thought of is that 1981 when the Rockets with a losing record
paid it to the NBA finals versus Boston.
You know what I don't know is, and I'm not old enough,
what were the expectations that team to begin with?
Well, I don't think very high.
Look at their roster.
They had, you know, aging Tomanovitch, Calvin Murphy was aging,
Newland was aging.
Don Levy was there.
Mosin Malone was growing up.
Alan Level was a rookie, I think.
Yeah.
You know, so not high expectations.
That's good.
And they were the, I just looked it up on,
they were the only the second team with the losing record to make it to the NBA finals.
Was this was the...
Oh, really? I thought they were...
Who was the other one?
Was the Van Gundy Nix's an under 500 team maybe?
No, they weren't an eight team, but I don't think...
Google said some team way back.
in the 50s.
Oh, okay, okay.
Chicago Stags or something weird.
Hey, I have some of their gear.
Yeah, I bet you do.
Stop.
Thanks, Vince, for the phone call.
It's good stuff.
Yeah, Mo Malone finished fourth in the MVP that year,
so he had a great year.
But outside of that,
I mean, Robert Reed had a good season.
Calvin Murphy was 32.
He shot 95.
I'm just curious.
I will never know, but what were the 80-81 rocket
supposed to do?
Yeah, Murphy was older and declined.
So was Tom John.
Calvin Murphy shot 95.8% from the free throw line that year.
Of course he did.
I suspect nothing else from him.
What a boss.
Yeah.
Yeah, it seems like expectations would be pretty low.
I mean, you had an MVP candidate and then a mix.
Yeah.
Over Under for Rocket wins this year.
Yeah, what was the win total that year?
Yeah.
This year's 54.
You're going with me to the Western Finals.
All right, let's go.
I thought you said I can choose NBA finals.
Or that's up to you.
you. We'll take a look at the bracket
when the time comes. You're saying that
if it's going to come down to cities over
you know. If Oklahoma City gets knocked out by somebody else,
I might feel they're going to make the finals. If it's
LA and the Rockets and the Clippers
or the Rockets in the Lake, you're like, I think LA would be good.
I have never been to an NBA
finals game. I have
been to
I've been to Western finals. I've been to World Series.
I've worked six
of them and I've been to
two others. Number of game. I've
into eight NBA finals games in my life.
I'm jelly.
I was young and fat.
Important question. How many more are you going to?
We'll discuss.
It's part of the final hour of the Matt Thomas show at Raw.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-213-2-5-7-0.
104 Sports Talk 790.
Hope you guys are in a good mood.
We're trying, giving you a little bit of an avenue away from sports.
See, our thoughts, deep, sincere, remorseful, painful, whatever.
I'm running out of adjectives for the devastation in central Texas.
Horrible.
No words could really do justice.
Yeah, we can't do it.
But we can ask you to do, and I've done so already, is please go to our website,
sports790.com.
There's an icon about 80% way down the page.
Not even.
Yeah, you just scroll down a little bit.
There's a story about Kevin Durant.
It's one of the first, like, it's the first link, and it's on the left, Kerr.
Kirk County Flood Relief Fund.
You click right on that.
It takes you directly to their page.
We are just funneling people to the page.
We're not, of course, not making any money or taking any money.
It goes to the Kirk County Flood Relief Fund directly to that website.
It doesn't even go through our company.
We would say it on air, but it's like a really long CFTexasheelcountry.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
So just the link is easier to give out.
So please, please, please, if you can, not the money is going to fix this.
Frankly, is not.
No.
But if we can help them anyway,
feed some people
help with the
the tree
I mean
houses and trees
recovery you know whatever
whatever we can again
a word of loss for words
just an awful awful
tragedy this weekend so please
if you can take a couple minutes
and spare a couple dollars if you can
support 790.com
and look for that
recovery efforts that they're trying to do in central
Texas and we are really really thinking
about them and that's why again
if any of you have been impacted by us, let us know.
We'll be happy to put you with them as well because they're trying to put everything towards
that one website to get the financial support that's needed for that.
I know that my, we live in Kingwood and one of the teachers at Kingwood Park High School
passed away.
He'd been a 30-year teacher there and they have not found his wife or his child at this
point when they're in the, and unfortunately we're now in the presumption situation.
but the folks in king went had a little vigil last night for him and it was just just very very sad so if you can help out a little bit
just lending a helping hand with a little bit of a donation I'm sure got a lot of families that are displaced right now and a lot of loss souls so we we invite you to go to sports 790.com and for that we thank you all right back to what we try to do and that is to entertain you and get some sports conversation astros are home tonight for the Cleveland guardians who have lost what
10 straight games?
Yes.
I'll start the sentence
this way again.
All right.
So this means.
So let's put this in perspective here.
You stopped me from completing the sentence last time.
I'm moving on.
So the Astros are a minus 135.
That's not crazy.
Meaning this.
If you want to make money on the game,
if you were a betting,
if you were going to the state line
and going over cross and betting,
something and say Vinton.
Okay.
Charles.
Sure.
It's a minus $135,
which means you have to spend $135
to win $100.
Rossi, that doesn't seem crazy.
If you think the Guardians are going
to beat the Astros,
you're only getting plus
$1.15.
That doesn't feel crazy either.
Colton Gordon, we trust.
I wonder why the Astros
are not a heavier favorite.
Tan up, babie, on the heel.
Conversely, if you were to bet the Rockies versus the Red Sox game tonight, the Sox who are only a game above 500,
granted, the Rockies are 21 and 69, so it is what it is.
But the Rockies are a minus 225 favorites.
You'd have to spend $225 to win $100 to win $100.
Mm-hmm.
The real odds somewhere in between.
That's how they make money.
you thought the Rockies were a blind squirrel finding a nut?
Only a plus 185. That's not a lot.
Yeah, that's juiced up. That's, uh, that's $40 a juice. That's, that's a lot.
Yeah.
But again, as I say, that's how they keep building sportsbooks and casinos. They don't give you the true odds.
Nope. Nope. And that's why you got to find the value when you can.
Yes. That's why a sharp like Matt Thomas with the first five hits like 89%.
Really impressive.
I don't know how I do it
I don't know
because my lot
generally speaking
my sports tics are terrible
terrible my predictions are bad
and you've never heard of either
of the starting pitchers
and you're like yeah
you're a wizard man
Jonathan are you a gambler
Jonathan
you know college I was
you know I had to take a step back
okay
I'm just saying you got to go with this
to Lake Charles sometime
you ought to see me work the room
on a plus first five innings game
again Ross is not lying
I win 89% of the time
I don't know why
I believe you all you're all seem confident
First five.
Yeah.
When we're here and making picks on air, it's a fade empty.
When we're in the casino, that's a tail empty.
That's right.
It's gravitate towards empty.
I'm gravitating towards the Astros.
By the way, did you see the Seattle Mariners this weekend?
They also did some damage too.
They, let's see, the final score in that game yesterday was, oh yeah, they swept the Mariners.
No, excuse me, the Mariners swept the pirates.
I want to say,
I'm going to double-check this.
Yesterday was 1-0.
The previous game was 1-0.
And Friday's game was
6-0-0.
The Pirates went to Seattle
and didn't score a single run over the weekend.
Thanks a lot, pirates.
And they lost a pair of 1-0-0 games back-to-back.
Paul Skeens, get me out of Pittsburgh.
I can't take this anymore.
I'm going to lose 20 games with ERA or two.
he is yeah i think it's like 194 era and he's like four and seven or something like that
well okay look he's got a smoke show of a girlfriend yes he's going to make a
boatload of cash 300 plus million minimum minimum minimum he can live with a few losses
yeah you're right he wins when he gets home put it that way
0.92 whip 1.9 4er8 4 and 7 record 4 and 7 what's a earning
again. 1.94. My close
personal friend, Nolan Ryan, had to go through that
many, many a time. He didn't have a point nine to whip
because he's walking everybody. But that's
okay. We love Nolan. I'm sorry.
I mean, you're just, you always are like,
I am the wet blanket. But I got to add this in
their guy. You're right. You're right. I'm sorry.
But usually what I'm adding in is a fact.
You know who would hate you is LeBron James.
Why? All the individual accomplishment
all the championships, the MVPs, the point holes.
Yeah, but he only shoots 31% from three in the fourth quarter of championship games.
No, I think he's better than that.
He's one of the clutch gods.
You get my drift.
Let's see, what would I butt?
I mean, the big butt would be he has fewer championships than Kobe and Jordan.
I'm going to throw three things at you right now, random things.
Okay.
Let me see if I can do this.
Let's do this.
Are you calling me negative?
Earl Campbell.
Oh.
is one of the greatest running backs I've ever witnessed in my life,
whether he was a Texas Longhorn, a Houston order, or a New Orleans saint.
Yeah, but he didn't really have the longevity.
He only had like really four maximum five plus seasons,
and I think it's arguable he may not even should have made the Hall of Fame.
Okay, that's one down.
You hear this, folks, Ross's yeah, but.
Number two.
Sean Alexander with more yards than Earl Campbell.
Portis, Ricky Williams, Marshawn Lynch, Eddie George, Tiki Barber,
Jamal Lewis.
Sorry, go ahead.
Number two, Tiger Woods.
Reinvented golf in the 1990s and most of the 2000s.
He became must-watch television because he got a young group of kids watching.
He got a bunch of people that didn't watch golf to watch.
And all by the way, he was dominant on.
some days. Well, also he was a bad person, ruined all of his interpersonal relationships,
not only with his wife, but also with basically every caddy that he ever met and just sacrificed
personal relationships on his way to his top and then never reached Jack Nicholas's number.
And his violent swings led to many injuries. Okay. So those were the layups. The Pope.
Speaks in front of millions of people. I'm staying away from this one. Speaks in front of millions of
People. Stay away from this one.
He is fluent in usually multiple languages, gets to meet with world powers, and tries to create a world of peace for every country, no matter what their affiliation is and who they believe in.
He tries to, you go to the Vatican, he'll speak with you.
He'll speak in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
He meets the government leaders.
Yes.
He's a man of incredible, credible faith and honor and has a wonderful soul.
Just put three words into Google, and that's all I'm going to say.
and then you can go from there.
Catholic Church abuse.
Oh, I'm just choked my chicken.
Excuse me.
You're choking your chicken back then?
Are you choking your chicken back then?
How are we going to move past this?
We're not moving past you choking your chicken.
Ross, maybe you choked my chicken, man.
He doesn't know.
No, I know.
You'd go to a dictionary.
Have you?
I don't want you.
choking on your chicken.
You can do that at 2 o'clock.
Certainly when you're maybe in the car, but not in the, not in the building.
You are, that's what you are.
You are, yeah, but, I got one for you.
Hallelujah.
Oh, no.
Beautiful people, 83 degrees.
Beautiful oceans, nice people, plenty of places to eat and relax and just ponder life.
Yeah, a place that was colonized and a lot of the native peoples are held down and oppressed and they really hate when tourists come over there and they treat them poorly.
And there's a lot of deep rooted economic issues.
You are the male Debbie Downer.
You asked me to.
I'd like to think I'm pretty positive overall.
You got him choking on his chicken in there.
That's a him problem.
You're going to hear from HR.
1 15 in the Matt Thomas show.
We're late.
The Rockets are a meeting with the media.
Just Rafael is.
It's a very informal situation, not like a formal press conference.
If it was, we would have carried it, but they're not.
So, Rafael's going to join the show tomorrow.
Looking forward to that.
Love it.
Yeah.
Don't know the time, but I'll let's go on tomorrow when he joins us.
Wonderful.
So we'll have gut feelings tomorrow.
We'll have Raffel.
We may move a couple things around depending on his schedule, but that's the plan.
And we'll also have Joe Espada with us.
Joe Spotted will be locked in at 1230.
What a show.
Yeah.
We're trying.
We're doing great.
We're trying.
We're trying to do our best here.
Oh, it just wrapped up.
We're going to, Rafael was just finishing with the media a few minutes ago.
So we'll get a couple of sound bites here, hopefully in the next 10 minutes or so.
All right.
Just my guess is just general excitement about having Kevin Durant here.
This is going to be very, very weird for me.
And I would say this for anybody.
It's going to be weird for Rocket fans.
Kevin Durant has been a pain in our ass for 15 years.
Yes.
All the years in Oklahoma City.
Then he goes to go get, he goes to Golden State where there was a lot of animosity about that.
I've always supported him.
You have been, you have been.
I supported LeBron during the decision.
That was, I didn't have a problem with him going to Miami.
I had a problem with how he did it.
Oh, raising all that money for the boys and girls clubs?
He could have wrote the check, wrote, wrote, wrote, wrote,
written the check without having to go through all that.
He raised awareness.
He did not raise awareness.
You raised awareness by saying, hi, I'm LeBron James.
Here's $5 million of the boys and girls called.
Giving all those children opportunities.
Thank you, LeBron James.
No.
Wrong.
What a great philanthropist.
Nope.
He did it because he wanted to self-promote.
And you're one of the goats, I guess you can do that.
Yeah, I'm sorry. The guy who was told he was the chosen one since eighth grade thinks he's got me.
I didn't call him that.
So one person calls him that?
It was put on the Sports Illustrated cover when he was in high school.
We were wrong about this, Ross.
You're wrong with very few things.
What do I say?
I'm not Trump here.
I don't know.
LeBron James.
No.
I can't do it, dog.
It was, no.
That was a joke.
And he had to wear it for a long time.
But I don't.
But the point being, where am I going with this?
Oh, I don't know.
So, Durant's just been a pain on our ass for the longest time.
Yes.
And now he's with us.
But he never was the evil enemy.
He was just, oh, stop trying to stop beating us.
Yes.
I will say I disliked, I respected, always respected Chris Paul's game,
but I disliked the way that he would wind or referees and flop around.
And then when he came to Houston, I'm like, all right, fine.
And hitting the jewels occasionally.
The occasional nut punch would happen, yes.
And same thing with Russell Westbrook.
I liked Russell Westbrook, but it was more of like entertainment than I wanted him on my team.
And then he was here.
And it's like, well, I got to support Russell Westbrook.
So I'm about.
I'm about.
I'm about to end of my 10th year with the Rockets.
Okay.
Congratulations, by the way.
Are they going to get you a $13.
a watch or something?
I don't think so.
They should.
This will be 13 years overall, but my 10th year coming in with this current run.
I want you to get, we're going to play a reverse.
You know how you always ask you to do sound effects of players?
Okay.
I want you to give me sound effects of great players that didn't start as a rocket and my feeling about them.
And you're feeling or my feeling about it?
And you can also add your sound effect too.
Just go back to the last since I've been joint doing the games.
Oh, I'm throwing them at you.
Yeah, you're throwing me.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
We'll start with, well, Dwight Howard.
No particular order.
You worked with Dwight.
That was in 16, he left, right?
I never called games with Dwight.
Okay.
But you're a PA.
I'll just start with it.
Dwight Howard.
Yeah.
Okay.
Chris Paul.
Yeah.
Pleasantly.
Pleasantly, yeah.
Russell Westbrook.
Really?
It was actually, remember when they went five out?
He was actually pretty good.
I'm not talking.
I'm just talking about the whole experience.
Oh, the whole experience.
Faring about the games.
Well, all right.
Well, and then Ryan Anderson.
Mm-hmm.
Let me think.
Eric Gordon.
Oh.
Got us some trouble with EG.
James Hardin.
During the rocket,
post.
I mean, he was in a VP here.
I'm not talking about the performance.
I'm talking about the result.
It's like the result.
I got you.
Being around him, on the planes, hotels,
before games.
Kevin Durant is TBD, but I'll still say Kevin Durant.
I don't mind he's 37 years old. I just don't.
That's the same thing you make when we mentioned Sophia Vergara.
Jeez, 50 something. I don't mind that either.
By the way, Jaylove at 55 is really good, too.
Mm-hmm.
Continue.
Oh, I'm sorry. I googled Sophia Vergara.
Good for you.
At least your mind is right.
Oh, here we go.
Go ahead.
Here we go.
Here we go.
I want to try this in you.
Okay.
Yeah, but.
Sophia Vigara.
One of the most beautiful women in the history of the world.
Done.
And every time we do a fantasy five that involves women, she's always in the list.
No, it's over.
She's perfect.
I got nothing.
Okay.
You finally got me.
I did get you.
How could I say a bad word about Sophia Vergara?
You can't.
There might be something that I just don't know about.
I got another one for you.
Did you hear that?
What's our girl the blondeie?
married to
the Saturday Night Live.
Scarlet Johansson is now the most
successful
female actress in terms of money in movie history.
Is that true?
Just with Jurassic Park.
Oh, Jurassic Park's going to make a billion.
Yeah.
What other, well, okay, she's been in all those Marvel movies.
Yeah, she has.
Yeah.
Can't yeah about her. She's perfect.
She married a dork on SNL, but he's funny.
Yeah.
Okay.
So those are the guys.
I've done.
So those are the players of yesterday
that I,
that I was pleasantly surprised about Chris Paul.
And by the way,
remember when Chris Paul and James Hardin apparently hate each other?
Yes.
Guess what Chris Paul might be going back?
You might go back to the Clippers.
If you hate James Harden that much,
no.
You're going back to the Clippers.
You're not going back to Clippers.
The Clippers wouldn't be an option.
Apparently he's hinting at retirement as well.
He said this was his last year.
Oh, okay.
after this year.
After this year.
Yeah, it should be.
He's got a, well, he's not catching Stockton.
Let me look at the all-time assist list.
He's got to be close.
I don't think he, actually, I think Stockton is still blowing everyone away.
I'll go look.
But what he needs to do, he needs to continue to pad his lead over LeBron James.
Because LeBron might catch him.
Yeah.
Stockton has 15,806.
Paul has 12,499.
Who is of all those players in all?
the last nine years. Who's the greatest player I've called personally as a Houston rocket?
James Harden.
Oh, Chris Paul, whose career?
But it's going to be Durant once I call a game.
James Harden is, yeah, Kevin Durant is top 15 all time, I think.
And you're Ryan Hollins earlier in the show today. He's like, man, he looks, he's working out,
looks like he's 25. And again, I will say this. I put him ahead of Steph Curry.
They were on the same teams in their prime. He won both of those.
finals MVP's and he was a better career
defender than Steph Curry was.
But Durant caught
a lot of flight because he went to
go join a team that was already great to begin with.
They don't win those championships without
Kevin Durant and what he was doing in those playoff runs
including against the Rockets and 18.
We have, believe it or not, coming up with Ringo Starring
20 minutes here on the Matt Thomas show at Ross.
713-212-2-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
Got a listener. Bobby
sent me a nice long email.
the show or just say Kevin, thank you very much, Kevin for that.
I was thinking my Bobby Boucher there for a minute.
Kevin said...
Hey, ho.
That was more Billy Madison.
Yeah.
I'm not looking forward to Billy Madison too.
Happy Gilmore.
Happy Gilmore, too.
I got to be honest.
Teaser trailer looked horrible.
I felt optimistic after the real trailer.
But I also was the only one.
People I've talked to are like, no, this looks terrible.
the recent
Reboats
Leighton sequels
Like coming to America
I heard the rebuing it was terrible
The latest Beverly Hills cop was not good
All right
I digress
So Kevin
Kevin says he listens to the show
And he also plays competitive softball
Oh wow
Competitive baseball for a long period of time
He's not a fan of Ben Mallor
What did Ben Mallor have to say
this weekend. Well, what do you think Ben Mallor said? He said they were cheating?
Yeah. I mean, he's trolling. Folks, listen to me. He's on in the middle of the night.
He's got to stoke up phone calls. He's got four to five hours to fill. He hosts by himself.
I actually think, like, you know, his fundamentals of radio are good. His takes are bad.
But, you know, as far as setting up topics, energy, I think he does all that good. So the reality is this.
He's trolling you.
You have to be, you have to have to have a screw loose to work overnights.
Yes.
You're just not going to be a main, like what my goal was when I was in radio,
would have become a radio?
It was like, yeah, I really, I think I could be a great midnight to five host.
I had larger aspirations.
I knew I didn't want to do morning drive.
I did it a couple times.
That's not for me.
You had to have a special kind of lifestyle for the mat.
And I didn't want to do nights because I wanted to do nights because I wanted to
in time with my kids. I've loved the midday sweet spot because it's just a little bit of a different
kind of an animal day drinkers. Yeah. But Kevin, love you very much. He says he is really deranged and
probably should be in a rubber room wearing a straight jacket. Okay. Then he says later on,
he goes, anyway, I'm not listening to 790 anymore when that D head is on the air.
They should just replay our show. Yeah. We'll get Jonathan on that. He doesn't have anything else to do.
Yeah, that's a more podcasting news.
The reality is this.
We're probably his second biggest market.
He's on in L.A. for sure.
I don't know if he's on in San Francisco.
I don't know if he might be on in Dallas,
but that would be, I'm not for sure.
Houston, I think, is his second biggest market.
And he's not going to rip on L.A.
Because that's where he broadcasts a show from.
Yes.
And it's in a more, it's a more of an evening time slot in the long.
Los Angeles with a time difference.
The Astros have been his go-to B-SLAPP for seven years in or now, give or take,
and he knows it pisses you off.
Exactly.
And he's going to keep doing it because he knows that you're still listening.
People, he's doing, he's trolling.
He's doing schick.
Yeah.
Which I'm not stick radio guy.
I know you aren't either, Matt.
Some people are.
I don't care for it.
And that's fine if that's your deal.
If you're doing schick, whatever.
But he's doing shick.
dick. It's not real.
It's trolling. I met him
one time. It was at a Clippers Rockets game.
He came by and said, hello. I was doing the game and he
came by at half time and said, well, he's fine.
I mean, again,
I just, you have to understand
when you work midnight to five or
one to five, whatever the hours are,
11 to 3.
That's specific time. That's one to five.
One to five our time.
You're just built differently.
So is he going to say
wacky, crazy things? Yes. Is he
have wacky crazy collars, yes.
He's got four hours to feel by himself.
As you mentioned, we're a big market.
He knows he's going to get a reaction.
Yeah.
Just put on the Matt Thomas show podcast.
Yeah.
Well, I'm sorry, with Ross.
Yeah.
Especially when I'm not here, and you forget all the bits of the show.
We did them.
I didn't forget them.
I just forgot to tease them.
You did?
I just don't get it.
Sometimes you forget to tease.
Yes, we did.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, we did everything.
All right.
I can't remember.
Gordy's. It was something about SEC football.
Imagine that. You hear Gordy's like,
yep, I'm going to truck it up to Atlanta
and really struggle to get all these guests.
You're going because you just want to hang out with your fellow
SEC honks.
No, he's going to be working, Matt.
Gordy is such a fraud when it comes to that.
That's not true. Because I went
on a couple of those trips.
You went with him to SEC? No, no, no.
On baseball. Oh, yeah.
Now, last year they were out in two games, so we didn't go
anywhere. Yeah.
But the year before, we were, I didn't
didn't do anything in, we didn't do anything in Minneapolis
but work. And in Arlington, I mean, what
were we going to do there anyways?
So let's figure out where you could be going this
year. Let's do it.
If the playoffs were
to end today, the season,
you know me, I'm standings guy. You're a Mr.
Season in today guy. I am
all about that. The Astros
would be the number two seed.
They would then take on
the winner of the
4-5 wild card.
Which at this moment is,
The wild cards would be
Yankees raise
Games to be played
Well they both have identical records of 49 and 41
I don't know who has the season advantage home field
Let's presume that
Let's just go Yankees, who cares
So do you want
Yankees Tampa Bay
Or do you want to drop to the three seed
But still but then have to play in the first round?
I do love Seattle
I do love Seattle.
I think if you're
You're the Astros, you want to stay in the top two.
I think the wild card really, no, there's no question.
There's no question.
First, we've got to play two extra games or three extra games.
Yes.
Secondly, you're going to burn pitching out in a wild card series when you can go use that starting pitching, get everybody healed up, get some people off their feet.
You mean to tell me that Jose Altoouvae wouldn't appreciate, or Jeremy Payne for that matter, or if Yordon comes back, wouldn't appreciate four or five days off the field?
They would.
Yeah, absolutely.
any lingering hand swordness we're all good
lingering
it's still there
yeah what if it never
yeah never left
so if he's got a if you got a permanent tingle then he's in trouble
permanent what tingle
you know what tingling means
you sound like you
oh I've got tingling you got permanent tingling
yeah it depends on who walks in a room
143
unbelieve it or not is up next
all things about Ringo star
Happy? Does he
Make you tingle?
He does not make me tingle.
Are you sure?
I mean, his music's good.
I like that.
I wouldn't say he's tingling.
Okay.
Well, I got a way for people to get their tingle back, Matt.
Well, I can't wait to hear this.
You know what?
We made a major mistake here.
We have not played one Ringo star song today.
We all live in a yellow submarine.
You know what?
I want you to play the song.
It's whatever he wrote down when he was on an Linger.
Let's D-Trip.
It don't come easy.
Go get the song and play a little bit of a hero.
Let's look at us some people with a solo career of one
George Starkey was.
Is that his name George Starkey, I think?
It's not a question.
I don't know.
Yeah.
It don't come easy, Ringo Starr.
This is a...
Sir Richard Starky.
Richard Stark.
Not George.
Give us a little...
It don't come easy, Jonathan, when you get a second.
He can fire that bad boy.
So deep cuts?
He had some number one hits.
Or did he?
But to find out here on below.
believe it or not.
Oh, this is a jam.
Isn't that?
Drums?
1970 Ross, we love
this song.
Good background vocals.
The lyrics are not great, but it is
what it is.
I would say easily fourth place lyricist
in the Beatles.
Easily. One verse, here we go.
Jonathan, give us a review after this.
It's great stuff, Rickup.
I'm listening to Ring on the way home.
Screw the 18.
All right, that's enough.
Okay, it took me a little bit.
It took me a little in the groove, but...
I'm not saying you some songs.
Also, fourth place singer in the Beatles.
Ringo Starrs on...
I'm not even going to say that, but okay, he is on the Beatles.
Yes.
You know what?
Do you disagree with me?
Fourth place singer and fourth place songwriter of the Beatles?
Yes.
Oh!
I mean, somebody's got to be four.
You have four greats.
Yes.
Somebody's got to finish last in that group.
No, I guess three head of them are all greats.
So who's the...
Who does Ringo sing better then?
No, it doesn't.
I'm just saying no.
Okay, who does he write songs better then?
No, no.
I mean, yeah.
Okay.
That's all?
I'm just stating a fact.
Yeah, give me another song.
Great career?
Oh, you want another one?
No.
This is a, your 16, I don't think you can't play anymore, can you?
It feels kind of inappropriate.
Yeah, it was a different time.
You're 16 in 1973.
Don't give any information.
That may be a question of believe it or not today.
That was a cover of a Sherman Brothers song anyways,
or written by the Sherman Brothers.
So he didn't write it.
No.
There's a cover.
Five minutes left to go on the show.
What should we do?
We should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show.
We simply call it a beat.
Believe it or not.
And here's how it works.
You'll call 713-212-5-7.9.
1-2-5-7-90.
Today's edition of Believe it or Not is
all things about
one of the all-time greats.
Ringo, Sir Ringo
Star, right?
It's been united.
I'll read your statement about Ringo.
Statements completely utterly accurate. You'll say this.
Believe it.
Our statement's erroneous
Philibunk and made up. You'll say this.
Not. Two believe or nots in a row
about Ringo Star. Win's your prize. What are you playing
for today? Jonathan.
A pair of tickets to see the
psychedelic first live on July 12 and
The House of Blues. Tickets are on sell now at Ticketmaster.com.
And of course, we got the Sports Talk 790 T-shirt.
I would I recognize even a single psychedelic first song?
I think one of them.
I think whatever their main hit is.
Okay.
Well, we're giving away those wonderful prizes today as part of Believe it or not.
713-212-5.7 a.m.
My phone bank is slow to get going here.
Are you all right?
So you're going to go to Davis first on line 1, Rossi.
Davis, you're on Believe it or not.
You're on Believe it or not.
believe it
Davis, good luck to you, my friend.
Here is your question.
I wrote it, here we go.
While naturally left-handed, Ringo plays a right-handed drum kit.
Believe it or not.
Not.
Yeah, it's actually true.
That's a lay-up.
That was lay-up drill.
Lay-up.
Bill, what's your favorite Ringo star song?
Permanent.
King, believe.
Ringo's brother-in-law is Eagles member Joe Walsh.
Believe it or not?
Hey, man, believe you that.
Believe it.
That is correct.
Statement number two for the win.
If all four were alive today, Ringo would be the oldest of the four Beatles.
Believe it or not?
Not.
Yes, believe it.
He's won twice recently, too.
Yeah.
He has.
By the way.
Bill is the most satisfying one.
Ringo is 85 today.
Believe it.
Yeah, you should.
Okay.
Ken on 790, Kim, what was your favorite part of today's 10-2 radio show?
Talk about the Astros.
Ringo had just one number one hit as a solo artist.
It was, we displayed it.
It don't come easy.
Believe it or not.
Not.
That is right.
He had two of them.
Photograph and your 16.
Statement number two for the win.
In 2016, Rolling Stone magazine,
named Ringo the 16th best drummer of all time. Believe it or not?
Believe it?
Yes, I don't believe it, but it's a correct answer.
Why, where do you hood them?
One or two, easy.
50th?
Stop.
Randy on 790, Randy, you ready to play, believe it or not?
Believe it.
From 1972 to 1974, Ringo hosted a monthly variety and music show on CBS.
It was called Ringo and his All-Stars.
Believe it or not.
Not.
That's right, I made that up.
Statement number two for the win.
Ringo is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Beatles and is a solo artist.
Believe it or not?
Believe it.
That is correct.
Congratulations.
Leon on 790, Leon, you're ready to play Believe it or not?
Believe it.
Leon, Ringo loves pizza but says he only gets it in the United States because British pizza is, quote, rubbish.
Believe it or not.
Believe it.
We gave it an answer an hour ago.
It hurts.
It just hurts.
Lance on 790 Lance, what was your favorite part of today's 10-2 radio show?
Kevin Durant, man, Kevin Durant.
All right, you get one question for the win here.
Ringo has, on his dating resume, before marrying Barbara Bach, Ann Margaret, Rachel, Raquel Welch, and Jane Fonda.
Believe it or not.
Nah
Yeah, I made that up.
You guys, aren't you.
Ross, how'd I do?
It's pretty good.
Not bad.
I'm proud of you.
That was great.
I didn't have the right.
No, you did excellent, man.
I think you should do it more.
I knew you were going to say that.
A plus plus.
All right.
I'm going to go listen to Ringo music.
If you don't like Ringo music, you should listen to Wax.
Are they both here today?
Are they both here today?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
You're awful.
Are they both here today?
Isn't Waxis turn for vacation?
Probably not.
I mean.
Ornose claim has been gone on vacation.
Playing the math, I'm just going to say no.
Somebody's going to show up to entertain you for the next four hours.
They might be part of the team.
Rafael Stone, Joe Espada, tomorrow, 12 as part of the Matt.
Thomasville Ross, 10 to 2, 790.
