Starting point is 00:00:01 Houston Astros take the series from the Marlins winning tonight. Five to three. Astros will look for this week tomorrow as they hand the Marlins, their eighth straight loss. This song makes you want to go get on a plane and go down there, right? It is an incredible city, great food. There's gambling, not too far away. beaches the sexiest women on earth
Starting point is 00:00:36 you said it I'm not gonna disagree I would say of all the towns I've been to Miami stands alone LA and Vegas are up there yeah you can be fat in Vegas you can be fat in Los Angeles I don't know I feel fat when I go over there
Starting point is 00:00:53 but Miami yeah if you're not fit if you're over 5% body fat they look at you like you're crazy yeah and if you are now not walking everywhere with your shirt off or at least a minimum of tank top
Starting point is 00:01:06 and again if you feel that yoga pants are something you'd like to look at Miami's your city probably that it's got to be like the fittest city in America too oh man and it's again Miami is way different than Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale is families older
Starting point is 00:01:20 Miami it's old fat people men that are making multi millions of dollars hanging out with models with zero body fat and zero self esteem. Yeah. Party in the city where the heat is on.
Starting point is 00:01:36 Welcome to Miami. Yeah. That's one of those songs you ever like in its time. You're like, man, this is a jam. And you look back and like, okay, that was kind of cheesy. But I really got into it. Yeah. But it's fun of those ones. I'm kind of embarrassed to be like, yeah, that was my jam back in the day. I like it. It's clever. It's something you'll bounce around to.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Again, makes you want to get on a plane and go down to Miami. Yeah. Will Smith, not one of the greatest rappers of all time, but. And kind of a lot of human. being when you think about it well he slapped somebody yeah yeah i think that makes it lousy hey you know well was the last time you slap somebody he was defending his wife's name last time i slap somebody sixth grade yeah that that feels about right yeah once you're past early junior high you cannot slap anybody okay you're either throwing hands you can slap a girl man if you can pimp slap i don't want you doing that to me that's why we have a little bit of
Starting point is 00:02:29 distance between the two of us, just in case I got out of the lines. I don't pipslap you. All right. Jonathan and Ross, I am going to tell you something that happened last night as I was getting ready to host the 10th inning show on Sports Talk 790. I'm going to tell you on a stack of a yellow jacket. No. On a stack of Bibles. On a, on my kids and my wife.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Okay. Last night, nine things. eighth inning, the Astros are playing the Florida Marlins, the Miami Marlins, and they're comfortably up. And all we're waiting for is a final score. And once that final score comes in, the Astros will have won their second consecutive game, and we'll check the standings in a moment on standing 790.
Starting point is 00:03:20 So in the eighth inning, the Astros last at bat, Jordan Alvarez leads off the eighth inning with a base hit. Did you see that? Yes. Then Isok Peretti's with a base hit. That moved Al-Tubei, excuse me, that moved Yordon Alvarez's second. Uh-huh. And it moved Isok Paredes to first base.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Who was next up, Matthew? Jose Al-Tuve. I said to myself in my Kingwood Studios. I know what you're going to say. I said, I swear to God, I said, Al-Tube is going to hit into a triple play. I believe you. And damn he did. So it's your fault.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Well, my question is this. It's almost like hitting a hole-on-one but having no witnesses. You don't just guess triple plays. Yeah, that's a game we play. Like, we're in the press box. We always predict what's going to happen and we tell each other. Or you and I are just watching a game on TV. And we're like, we're like the 6-4-3 double play coming.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Or a dollar bet at the bar. Yeah. That guy's going to miss his next three-pointer or he's going to make his next three-thru. So you're there by yourself. So I was there by myself. Presumably 20% clothes? Huh, that's interesting. I didn't have shorts on and underwear, but no shirt.
Starting point is 00:04:42 You're right about that. So that's at least 50%. So my wife comes home. She'd had dinner with a friend. And I said, you're not going to believe this. And she said, I do believe you. I said, why weren't you home 15 minutes earlier so I could have. told somebody and had evidence to this fact.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Why didn't you text her? I'm not going to text my wife when she's at dinner with a friend. Oh, by the way, two ways of the plate with nobody out and runners at first and second, he's going to hit into a triple play. Yeah, it's a big deal. She could have given you a thumbs up. So as soon as it happened, I cackled for a minute. Okay.
Starting point is 00:05:14 And then I looked around, and there was no one around to celebrate this with. No one to corroborate your story. So if I would have said this to a group thread of friends, the answer would have been, sure you did. Oh, yeah. congratulations that great announcement. No, I believe you, Matt. Okay, thank you.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I mean, you swore on your kids about a triple play. Seems a little much, but I swear to God, I said he's going to hit into a triple play. Okay, well, he did. He did. First one since, what, 2019? Yeah, and it was classic 543. It was slow people on the base base.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Around the horn. Slow Alvarez, slower Peretti's, and no longer a quick L-2-A. You were on. got a little speed once he gets going. He's more of a galloper. Yeah, he's like a thoroughbred down the stretch. He'll see. He's got late speed. He's
Starting point is 00:06:06 better the last for long. Okay, so that was my night. Was, uh, was bragging to no one that I got this triple play call. And then talking about it on the 10th ending show right here on sports talk 790. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:22 And then we had, uh, I had a Jose Altovae uh, it wasn't a basher, but it was a what's he doing still playing? Well, he's got an OPS to 704. That puts him about fourth on the team, Rossi. I know it's not the Jose Al-Tube that you love. I know it's the Jose Al-Tube that has been the greatest astro of them all. But folks, have you seen the OPSs of this team?
Starting point is 00:06:45 99% of the season? OPS plus, league average being 100. He's at 95 and below average second base. So, I mean, but his name is Jose Al-Tube, so he's going to be on the team. and I still I've been saying this like all season long he's gonna he's been on some runs I still think he's gonna finish over
Starting point is 00:07:02 over an OPS plus of 100 folks that's my bold prediction I like it I like it a lot let's see last few years 161 OPS plus then to 151 124 11495 so there's been decline unfortunately there has been decline and he's 36 years old
Starting point is 00:07:18 and it's not a surprise yeah he's got 12 bombs something and again It's the fourth highest OPS than team among regular players? That's just an indictment of the team. What is?
Starting point is 00:07:32 I did this last time on the 10th inning show. I went with A, Yordon, B, Peña. Pena or East side, depending on what day. E.S. Walker is up there. So maybe fifth, means of the fifth highest Ops. Well, Raynell Dogados is higher. I'm not going to count that.
Starting point is 00:07:50 And is Carlos Correus. Yeah, we're not going to count. And he's close with Lamont Wade Jr. Hey, wait a minute. Standing 790, what we got? Brain and shoe makes right up there, too. I'm turning the positives into this. Give me some Standing 790 music. We need more of a sounder as the kids said.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Yeah, the sound. Look at the sounder going here. Okay, how are we doing, Standing 790? I need a sounder first. You're a computer. Oh, as a computer. It's loading up. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I'll do it. Standing 790. Astros are three back. Astros are three back. They were three and a half. yesterday. Yeah. So they made it a half game.
Starting point is 00:08:31 Correct. Okay. Texas in first place at 51 and 50. Seattle at 51 and 51 in half game back and Houston is three back at 49 and 54. If I would have told you on March the 1st. Yes. In the midst of spring training. The Astros on July 22nd, 2020, 2006, were three games out of first place.
Starting point is 00:08:53 In third place. I don't think, I think it's moot. Yeah, no, it's not moot. You got to beat two. You got to climb two teams, not just one. We saw them climb five wildcard teams in a week and a half. And then they're behind five wild card teams in a week and a half. Where are they now?
Starting point is 00:09:08 They're three back. If I came back to my answer. Four games. They gained a half game in the wild card too. Okay, behind three teams. Yeah. But three out, you'd be like, I can accept that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:22 What's their record? It's not great. It's only five under 500. Playoff watch 790 has them back up to 20%. That's good. All it takes is two wins over the fish. Before these two wins, they're like at 13%. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Slow and steady, my friend. Slow and steady, my friend. Did you hear Dana Brown 30 minutes ago? He is very bullish on his team. Of course he is. What's he going to say? What would you like him to say? Exactly.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Oh, my God. This is depressing. All these pitches are brought in and suck. I mean, EMI was good yesterday. I taught two. Emai was good. You was six innings? Really good.
Starting point is 00:09:55 By the way, I'd say a gut feeling hit for me. I said at least five. I said three innings, three earned runs are fewer. And I was correct as well. Oh, yeah, we're all celebrating today. Let's go. It's an EMI celebratory Wednesday on the show. Fresh EMI.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Let's go. All right, 713, 212-5-790. 7-1-3-2-1-790. Our time is 10-12. It is Matt. It is Ross today on the program. At 11 o'clock, we'll visit with Brian Bogussevick. At 1130, we have shut you, uh, we do have shut your bum ass up.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Ain't nobody got time. I almost got, uh, completely taken off the freeway by an 18-wheeler on 6-10 today. I was honking my horn left and right. I almost, let me ask you, can I get a ruling? Could I have taken a picture of his license plate and put it on social media and say, this guy's a douche? I think you're not supposed to post pictures of people's license plates?
Starting point is 00:10:45 That's why I didn't do it. I figured that was probably not the best thing. I don't know if it's illegal. I don't know. And here I'm presuming it was a guy driving 18-1. It could have been a woman, too. I don't know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:56 But I was pissed. It happened at 610 and Woodway. You know, like right close to our station. It is not illegal to post someone's license plate, but is it dushy? There's no reasonable expectation of privacy legally. Okay. However, it can still open up to legal liability. You know what?
Starting point is 00:11:14 If they got harassed. Oh, I would like to harass them. That's the whole point of me doing it. If somebody got harassed or stalked. Yeah. I don't need that. Or docks them via using the plate. the plate, then you could be liable.
Starting point is 00:11:28 Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. There we go. Quick Google search. Good job, Matt. Good judgment on your part. I'm going to do that. All right. Trade deadline. Do we have some names? Do we have something going on? Is it all quiet on the baseball front on that? Yeah, what's the latest? We'll get to that. And then the Miami Heat called for a press conference.
Starting point is 00:11:50 They had to take down. We'll discuss that. And then that in the show today. An endless Texans offensive line preview. I feel it's kind of important. Okay, that sounds great. Yeah, we'll go position by position. That sounds good. Let's do it.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Why not? Training camp's coming up. Season's getting fired up. Football town. Let me ask you this. Back-to-back divisional rounds? All of us predicted the Astros to win north of 85 games. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And we all kind of have a little bit of egg in our face. Wouldn't it be better if I just predicted the Texans that go 7 and 10? And if I got it right, I'd be like, man, you do know your football. Yeah, okay. You owe me, by the way, from a bet from a bet from, last year that I never collected on. We had seven and a half wins. Appetizer?
Starting point is 00:12:31 I can't remember what that was. Was it like a spinach dip? I took it easy on you, though, because I goaded you into it off air. So I won't collect that one. You can't if you want to. That's fine. Can we go during lunch? Because that's how you pay your bets off during lunch.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Yeah, that's fine. What's wrong with that? Cheaper? Is your belly full? You barely don't know what time of day it was? I probably could have some in my eye. Was your belly full? It was fine.
Starting point is 00:12:55 And did you take home the leftovers? 713, 212. That's it. I thought it was more. He got my hopes up. I thought it was LeBron decision time. I'm sorry. Dana Brown making a move.
Starting point is 00:13:24 It's a one? Nate Pearson got true to the Royals. Oh. Okay. You're so wrong for this. It's a one. That's a trade. It's deadline time.
Starting point is 00:13:39 By the way, shahy. are you looking shot 10 today. Oh my God. Good look at her. That's a five-knit breaking news center right there, if I've ever seen one. Oh, my gosh, you relax. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Do you think? For what? No, it doesn't say yet. Well, I don't know what to think. Chandler-Rome's reporting this. Was it for Bobby Witt, Jr.? That would be great. I would take his payroll.
Starting point is 00:14:07 I would take his contract. I think Jim Crane would figure out a way to make that happen. Uh-huh. First Jamie Payne, you would have to be looking somewhere else. Maybe they're training to Jeremy. I don't know. It wouldn't be that in case. No, no.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Yeah, the Astros are trading reliever Nate Pearson to the Kansas City Royals. Nate Pearson started to turn a season around. Maybe they're getting some sneaky. You can get some sneaky good value. Yeah, because you know what the Astros have. I mean, the bullpen has been better last couple months. But let's not pretend that it's just a bunch of lockdown guys back there after Josh Hayter. They're all utterly replaceable.
Starting point is 00:14:41 It's just the reality of it there. So that's a move, frankly, because you are going to have to be sending some people in and around. I mean, Kai Wei Tong probably not going to start again for the Astros this year because you got West Neski coming up. You've already got Blanco back. So basically, you've ridded yourself of two relievers that you were thinking about where are you going to put them rotational.
Starting point is 00:15:05 And you still have Mike Burroughs sitting down there. Circulane's like, can I come help y'all? He's marinating. I don't know if Mary, well, he's ready to serve. He might be frying if they're playing those outdoor games. Could you imagine going to a space cowboy game right these days? Ooh, that's not great. Oh, Lord. I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:15:20 I mean, well, support our great friends over at the space cowboys. I'm not blaming them. I mean, it's good product. Jesus. I'm not going to die on them sitting in the stands. Well, at least their name isn't the Skeeters anymore. It's like, hey, it's 102 degrees. You guys want to go see Skeeters?
Starting point is 00:15:34 No. No. What I would do is I would probably hand everybody a six pack of beverages or water or something. Yeah. It's a courtesy. Like, walking to our stadium. You get a cold. compress night at the ballpark
Starting point is 00:15:44 you get a bottle of suntan lotion you get a big bottle of like one of those long liter of waters yeah no salty food because it makes you thirsty so you don't oh look at this guy I'm just saying wow for Mr. Science over here I don't know but Nate Pearson is no longer
Starting point is 00:16:01 oh do we have do we even have Nate Pearson highlights no there's probably maybe like one or two I guess I'll hold on all right let's see if we can make this happen are you serious Jonathan get, I will remember you. Ready to go. Or how about end of the road or something?
Starting point is 00:16:17 Oh, end of the road? Ooh, that's okay, either one. It should maybe be in the system, Jonathan. Oh, yeah, we got some Pearson. All right, Pearson. Bad throw. Now, don't put Peterson. He did have a bad throw that one time.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I said Pearson. I didn't say Pearson. I thought you were saying Adrian Peterson. All right, well, see how this sounds. If this makes any sense. I don't have any highlights of people getting beat up in poker rooms. I hate it. Is it still the live version?
Starting point is 00:16:46 Yeah. 2-0 to Caratini. And that's a round ball, just in the left of second, charging Pena. He gloves, straightens up, throws to first side, retired. 1-2-3 inning for Nate Pearson in his Astros' debut, and we go to the ninth inning in Minnesota. We're going to pick off highlight. Perkins a big lead off of second, and they have him picked off.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Pearson throws a parade is, and he's out. Blake Perkins had taken a few shovel steps toward third base before Pearson had brought up the leg and Pearson turned around, saw him, and the pinch runner is Easy Pickens. Two away. Ah, Pearson picking off Perkins, Easy Pickens. I see what you did there, Robert Ford.
Starting point is 00:17:40 What a professional. Hold on, sorry, my computer's freezing. This is an appropriate way to say goodbye. Dribbler out in front of the plate, picked up by Pearson, throws to first on a hop in and it pulls Walker off the bag. Oh, whoops. The E1.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Sorry. Well, that's all we got. We're not full of, I mean, if we did an out, too they tribute. Swing and a miss. Got him on a slider away. Caglione strikes out for the third time today, and there is one away.
Starting point is 00:18:19 There's Nate Pearson Random strikeout All right Let's get the phones going At 713, 2,1, 2, 1, 2, 5, 790 Your favorite? You were tweeting out What was your favorite?
Starting point is 00:18:30 Nate Pearson and Astro a moment, were you? I'm going to do it right now. Thanks for reminding me. 3-2. Strike 3 on the inside corner and Williams goes down looking, burned him with a fastball at 97 and the side is retired.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Nate Pearson retires six of the seven he faces, strikes out two of them. There you go, Nate. I'm going to put the phone number out there to see if you guys want to call me with it. Do you think we get a board full of Nate Pearson calls? Do you even get one? Maybe. Anybody in the Pearson family morning right now?
Starting point is 00:19:03 Where are they from? Are they from here? I think because if they're local, maybe they're listening. Or maybe we have the I-Heart radio app. Nate Pearson was born in Odessa, Florida. That's not going to put us close. Odessa, Texas, we had a puncher's chance. Odessa, Florida.
Starting point is 00:19:23 This is kind of a jam. Oh, I like the live version's good. It's better, I really have it. Yeah. You can really hear those acoustic guitars. The backup singers are doing great. All right. I'm going to do this again. Seriously.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Let's see how this works. 713-212-570. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Your favorite, Nate Pearson as an astro moment. We are looking for Nate Pearson phone calls on the show. and it's not working out real well. Doesn't mean we still have three and a half hours left to go. I mean, is that your lead topic at noon today?
Starting point is 00:20:10 We could play highlights of ESOC Prattie's home run or base hit. We could also just play Nate Pearson highlights all day long. Not all day long. Come on, Chandler. One of our highlights is him throwing the ball away. Yeah, that's fair. Let's take a look here. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:26 So we're looking for Nate Pearson reaction. We're going to discuss some Nate Pearson right here on the show. you. Yeah, it was bad. I deserve a another headache, don't I? Jonathan, how's the jar looking?
Starting point is 00:20:42 Oh, my God. I don't know, but I think we should shame them every time. Yeah. You mean, every time. You've been shaming me every time for years on this. We should do it like,
Starting point is 00:20:49 you know, more abruptly. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Don't give me any space. Just to say stop right now before you're head of nine. Okay.
Starting point is 00:20:57 713-212-5-790. Scott is with us at 1034 on 790. Scott, good morning. Hey, good morning, Matt. What's on your mind? Well, last night when I was listening to the game and Parades came up and I heard that smack or that ball coming off that back. Were you able to hear that at the stadium? I was actually, when Paradeus hit the home run, I was in the stands sitting with some friends, so I did not hear the specific smack.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Man, I knew it was a home run as soon as it hit. It was so loud. I was just wondering the difference. if you were able to hear it and if you knew it was gone as soon as it left the bat but no I mean you know again
Starting point is 00:21:42 people were sitting around talking by the way thank you Scott for the phone call we we rip on a variety of things for the Astros fans first of all the use of the wave is embarrassing
Starting point is 00:21:54 okay Twitter is the worst Twitter in Houston I'm still going to rockets right now it's bad but y'all are a tracking yesterday. What? I was just saying it was an attractive group of people at the game yesterday.
Starting point is 00:22:12 The dollar dogs got the people out. Really? I mean, there were, and I was sitting with two. The glissies were gleaming. I was sitting with two other men yesterday, and they brought up to me before I brought up to them. Like, man, we got another about eights and nines around us here. Okay. It was almost like River Oaks target good.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Really? Yeah. It was like Rockets Playoffs against the Lakers good? I got to be honest. it was Rockets playoff. You know what it was? It was Wild Card World Series. You can tell the game steps up when it's Rockets' playoffs time.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Oh, for sure. For sure. But I was like, man, maybe we're getting better looking as a city. Okay. Or we're going for Miami. We don't want to be known as the fattest city in America anymore. Maybe these shots that are everybody's dropping weight left and right on. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Everybody's got Ozimic. Yeah, whatever the case would be. It's working. Or Moon Jarro. Yeah, it's working. Everybody was like, damn, y'all, it was just, it was hard to focus on the game. Although Tatsu E. Mai, with all the historic counts,
Starting point is 00:23:09 getting the ounce yesterday, we were still do it. So congratulations to not only if you went to the game yesterday, you were an attractive bunch. And I left in the fifth inning, so I don't know if anybody was doing the wave after that. That will ruin all the good vibes. But, yeah, it was an attractive. I would have not thought the Tuesday dollar hot dogs
Starting point is 00:23:25 would have brought out the good-looking crowd. So we know what you were doing instead of watching the AB, the Paredes AB. Maybe I didn't hear the smack because of, I was, you were smacking your lips I was I wouldn't be I'm not I'm not doing that
Starting point is 00:23:43 I have eyes truly let me get this man a bib He was wetting wiping the sweat off my brow But you know It's a different issue For a different time
Starting point is 00:23:53 Oh my gosh All right 713 2125 790 So we're still looking for Our first Nate Pearson call In the show today What the heck
Starting point is 00:24:01 Why I thought we had a good Baseball audience Yeah okay Yeah we do But we don't Go to deep We have Christian Vasquez Truthers.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Okay. We have, why isn't Bryce Matthews got a five-year, $100 million contract right now to buy him out of his arbitration years? But I can't get an innate Pearson call? Oh, we got a tweet that Joe Spott is an idiot because he's batting Jose Al-Tubei cleanup. Like there's other options. I mean, that was my point yesterday to the caller on the 10th inning show,
Starting point is 00:24:31 is that who else did you want to go with? Yeah. I mean, do you want to, I mean, Lamont Wade Jr., I guess, sample size is small. Osele-L-Tube has got a higher OPS than he does. Christian Walker, I get it, but he's been horrible in July and coming off a hip injury. What was they said? It was a hip, I forget.
Starting point is 00:24:49 Yeah, hip soreness of some sort, yeah. Okay. So, yeah, I'm, guys, do you want Taylor-Tremel up there? Lucas Spence, Christian Vasquez. Joseo Tube is my favorite astor of all time in terms of performance, okay? Yeah. But I'm not naive to what he is.
Starting point is 00:25:06 and he is 60% of what he was in his absolute prime. So, I mean, I can't possibly argue with that with anybody. But right now, if you watch this team or listen to this team for anything like the time, 60% of Jose Altovae is better than four ninths of the Astros lineup. Which is not good, which is why they need a bat. Because Standing 790 says you're right there in it. Rossi, three out. That's nothing.
Starting point is 00:25:32 That's a weekend. Yeah, it's not nothing. It's nothing. Well, you need both of those. other teams to get swept. Oh, which again, you're talking about two teams that are comparable in record. Okay, well, I will bet you by Monday they're not in first place. I wouldn't take that bad. I mean, I made your odds on that. Okay, well, you said that right there. But they are right there. You know what? Could they be in first place in three weeks? Of course
Starting point is 00:25:54 they could be. Yeah, could they be six back in three weeks. They could be. Yeah. That's why I said, let's, before we start thinking about selling off, I know everybody was all pissed off on Monday. We got to see what they do against the White Sox, which is a team is in first place in their division and then you're going to go get fat and happy. You got to, you know what, again, I don't want to be the king of you. You got to go sweep guy because that's ridiculous. Uh-huh. But it wouldn't be the worst thing, Ross, to go to Anaheim and sweep them.
Starting point is 00:26:18 This is who they are, though. They're up and they're down. They're hot and they're cold and they're five games below 500. This is who they are. They inspire a little hope for a few days, and then they disappoint you for a few days. That's me, that's just, this is the roller coaster. And at the end of the day, you end up 49 and 54 right now. This is who they are.
Starting point is 00:26:36 So yeah, credit to them. Nice couple of wins. Certainly encouraging by EMI. Honestly, we could find some silver linings in the Blanco Star. That's the third time we've said, certainly encouraging by Emi. And then after we say that, he sucks the next two performances. Yeah, Tatsu Emi is the 2026 use in Astros.
Starting point is 00:26:54 Certainly encouraging and then not. So they're going to replace the Astro Star logo with Tatsui Emi? That Chase the fight is going to be Chase the Mid. You know, he's got, some economic bonuses into his contract based off of
Starting point is 00:27:11 Yeah, for 100 innings I think he needs to get to 100 But there's also some other ones before that too Okay So what do the Astros do?
Starting point is 00:27:19 Do you sacrifice Do you throw him out there To try to make him right? Please don't tell me They're going to penny pinch him I mean if you're out of it I guess I guess I'm saying If you're out of it
Starting point is 00:27:29 You do Which you could be Could be a week But the leash would be shorter on him as a starter because of you got other guys coming back. Yeah. Well, you got Peter Lambo going today, baby. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Got your ace. Staff ace. Probably the, I feel goofy even saying this. What's his contract says? He's a free agent after this year. Is he been linked six years? He believes a one year deal. Oh, in terms, I believe he's, well, it's a one year deal.
Starting point is 00:27:59 So I believe he's a free agent because he came back from overseas. So I think that's kind of different with the arbitration stuff. Yeah, I'm curious if he has, if he's got controlled. years left at his contract, whatever it is. As far as I know, he's, he is a unrestricted free agent after this year because he's on a one-year deal. I mean, you could get, and I don't want to say this because that would mean you're giving up on the season, but you can get some good return on him. You know that, right? The Asherers Elite released him on March 26th and then re-signed him on March 27th.
Starting point is 00:28:27 I'm sorry, March 24th and then resigned him on March 27th. As far as I know, he is a free agent. Yeah. He would be a sellable asset. I put that phone on mute. I know it's a spam call, too. I've got to get rid of it. All right, let's do this.
Starting point is 00:28:44 I'm going to go alter my phone. Ross is going to tell you about synergetics, and we're going to take more Nate Pearson phone calls. So far, we've got zero. All right, you have the details on the Nate Pearson signing. And maybe we're going to probably back off on the Nate Pearson's up because it feels like it's not moving the needle here on the radio show. I mean, I'm trying, Nate.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Wall-to-wall Nate Pearson coverage. By the way, I was getting tweeted by H-H-Town Sports not. He's saying Lambert has control for next year. Okay, well, it's good. Lambert was outrighted in 24, then went to Japan, and then came back, I thought here on a one-year deal.
Starting point is 00:29:29 I thought once you got outrighted and then cleared waivers or whatever, that you weren't subject to arbitration, but I guess I could be wrong on that. I guess we're looking for clarification. Yeah, we can get some. We'll try to get some clarification on whether or not Lambert is under control
Starting point is 00:29:45 for next year. At which point I would be more. If the Astros were in three out, this is a mood conversation. So. Yeah. They're in striking distance. Like I said, they're like a cobra. Let's wait a week from today. Ready to strike. Wait.
Starting point is 00:29:57 The King Cobra Astros. We're not doing Diamondback talk. What are you doing here? Yeah, why not? All right. So tell the folks, what the Astros are getting returned for, Nate Pearson. They're getting what they're calling a pitching prospect. Right-hand pitcher Max Martin from the Royals.
Starting point is 00:30:15 So there you go. Matt, your thoughts on Max. Martin. I've never seen him pitch until about a minute and a half ago, I know I do it who he existed. I'm sure the Martin family is lovely. I'm sure the kid has worked his tail off to get to professional baseball and I can't wait to see what he does. How old is he? He is 22. 22. He is in high A ball. Okay. With a 140 ERA. So we'll see him in a couple of years. Hey, a ball with a 140 ERA. Yeah, it looks, look, I mean, the numbers are good.
Starting point is 00:30:52 And where he's on the Royals top 100 prospect list? Do you want to put that, I can pull that up. I guess I've never really asked you to look at a prospect list of other teams, but why not? Take a look, right? Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. He is not listed in their, right? Wait. No, he is not listed in their top 30.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Yeah, but I mean, let's face what you're. Yeah, top 30 of the Royals is probably, you know, a lot of guys are better than the Ash. Might be top 30 in the Astros. Yeah, but I mean, could you imagine name Pearson getting you? He just named Astros his second best prospect for the Astros. Just kidding. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:31:26 If you say that. Now you're just being cruel to the organization. You shouldn't say that. I know what? That was unfair. And that was, you know, I want to write that down for Friday. Sorry to Astros farm system. All right.
Starting point is 00:31:39 713-212-570. 7-1-2-1-790. We've got Brian Bogus of it coming up at 11 o'clock. We'll get to that. Oh, love it. So let's do this real quick. Let's get to, uh, what the Miami Heat did yesterday.
Starting point is 00:31:54 Okay. Now, this is, anytime the Miami Heat and LeBron get brought up, it makes me laugh because, again, I have a friend of mine who has a friend who's insisting that he's going to Cleveland. And it may very well be the case.
Starting point is 00:32:09 If LeBron's insisted for weeks he's going to Cleveland, then why would you wait, let this dog and pony show down? I would just sign and get there and try to, hey, it's good to be back home, Can't wait to be with my bros. James Hardin can sign now, and we can work with Evan Mowgli and Donald McHencher. You can start a brand-new marketing campaign with a Cavaliers and everything. But that hasn't happened because LeBron's not made his decision.
Starting point is 00:32:33 So apparently yesterday, there was a social media post that said there was a LeBron James introductory press conference. A representative for the Miami-Hean acknowledged a mistake, claimed it was simply an error by the social media department. and then shortly after that, the Miami Heat listed a job opening for director of YouTube strategy on LinkedIn. Now, whether or not that had anything to do with it, I probably doubt it, but it's just kind of funny that those two things were basically done on the same day. Okay, so it was a just-in-case link is what they're saying. I didn't see it.
Starting point is 00:33:12 I just saw the... You wouldn't believe what we just posted kind of thing. Yeah, the Miami Heat spokesperson told Champ Sharani, the club social media department was preparing for the possibility of James signing and mistakenly posted the link. Can I tell you about social media departments? And again, I don't mean to stereotype on this, but I'm going to anyway. They're usually people with their first jobs at a college. They are hungry.
Starting point is 00:33:38 They love the fact they have an email address that says at professional team. Yeah, you get an underpaid college kid to be all excited to work for an organization. And they burn out in two or three years and go on to a bad. better job. It's an entry-level job. Yeah, it can happen with any industry, but this is, if you want to get into sports and you're not a communicator or you're a player or you're an analytics person, but you like to shoot TikTok videos, and you're really good at it, you can get a social media job because every sports team, whether there's football, basketball, baseball, always trying to find social media people that are looking to reinvent their
Starting point is 00:34:13 industry to have funny videos or clever themes. So, that's what the youngans are doing. They're trying to figure out new inventive ways to get reach on social media. But it also comes to the price of people that are sometimes don't pay attention to the tail, sometimes put something in drafts and send it back. I mean, that's just going to happen with any younger. Problem is when you put 23, 24-year-olds involved in such a huge thing, like what is the Rockets Twitter account?
Starting point is 00:34:43 It's got to be a million and a half. The Astros. At least three or four-nine. You know what I'm saying? Those are huge responsibility. you're giving to people that are being paid $25, $26,000 a year. Three million followers for the Rockets.
Starting point is 00:34:57 It's pretty good. So if the Rockets did something like that, the Rockets would be obviously like, uh-oh, we have egg on our face. And that's exactly what happened to Miami Heat. So you're saying I jumped the gun when I put a few bucks on Cal Sheaf for LeBron to Miami. Did you see they already have the job listing of that for the Miami YouTube director? So they already got fired? That's what the streets are saying on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:35:17 Are the streets saying that or is it just coinking it? No, it was a screenshot of the LinkedIn of Miami Heat looking for a new candidate for the YouTube directory. I mean, if I am an old stodgy front office person, do I say mistakes happen or do I fire the bro or girl? I don't think it was a fireball offense. It's embarrassing and no sports teams want to be embarrassed. But, I mean, they didn't put them in, I didn't see the post, but they didn't put them in, LeBron didn't put them in Miami Heat Gear, did they? No, not that I know of. I mean, I could imagine that being much more...
Starting point is 00:35:53 It was just a link that said introductory press conference. Yeah, so I... On the 27th. I would say, don't ever let this happen again, or you're going to be looking for work. But why can't you do that? It feels like he's got to be coming there. Why would you do that if he's not even sunk?
Starting point is 00:36:08 Can I tell you from experience? Okay. The Rockets have had videos made of players in their gear that never came to the Rockets. So it could slip out. Yeah, but it's just a link. They're posting a link, and it says introductory press conference. Yeah. Yeah, I guess I wouldn't type that up is what I would do. To a scheduled live stream. Yeah, I don't know that you would do that if he's not coming. So is the cat
Starting point is 00:36:30 out of the back now? I don't know. If that's the case, and LeBron can just say it. It doesn't seem like it. Yeah. I don't know. We're just thinking about this. Real quick before we get to Brian Bogus-evic. Paul is with us on 7-90. Hi, Paul. Yeah, since you were basically pleading to get folks to Pleading is what I would go with. Yes, I would definitely say pleading. You know, I'm a longtime astro fan, a realist, as opposed to some of the folks who are more like Homer McFanboy. I'm more like a Howard and Memorial being realistic. But my memory of today's pitcher, I think of, what was it, Nick Parsons? Anyway, my particular memory does have a particular date that I will always remember, and that date,
Starting point is 00:37:15 would be 722, 26, today, the day they got rid of him. And instead of playing that wistful, nostalgia, longing, I will remember you. The more accurate song would be, hit the road, Jack. Oh, wait a minute. Ney had some value. He didn't defend his position particularly well. Thank you, Paul, for the phone call. But, you know, his arm was used.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Somebody's got to throw in a 7-2 game, right, Rossi? Somebody's got to go in there when Tatsu Iemi throws five, gives up four runs over two and two thirds. Oh, hey. Yeah. Why you got to talk about Tatsu EMI? I mean, coming off a great start.
Starting point is 00:37:56 Let me tell you all something. If you really want to be a great friend of the Matt Thomas show at Ross, go figure out how many high leverage performances. I can go find it out. Oh, come on. Oh, my God. Jonathan.
Starting point is 00:38:11 Damn. I can't get Stennon 790. ready to go, but I can get this going when I need to. How many high leverage situations is Nate Pearson pitched for the Astros? I would say at least one. Okay, one out of how many? I thought you play this song. It's so good. You can keep playing it.
Starting point is 00:38:35 I'm not sure. I miss Ray Charles. Six played appearances of high leverage in three games he faced. Opponents hitting just 167, one for six. So three games out of how many appearances for the Astros? Eight medium leverage appearances, 16 low leverage appearances. You know what? If there was a low leverage Hall of Famer?
Starting point is 00:38:57 Come on, man. What do you mean? I was being polite. All right, keep this music up. I apologize to the Pearson family. Friday. That's right. This is a jam. Write that down at 1130.
Starting point is 00:39:10 This is the jam. Oh, my God. I'm going to talk about Big City Wings of this song in the background. Okay. I'm sure Ray Charles, if he was alive, we'd love to have big city. I'm sure the state is on board with this. I'm sure I'm going to get a cease and desist here. Yeah, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:39:22 All right, that's probably a smart idea. This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. 1102 Sports Talk 790. Let's spend 10 quality minutes with our friend Brian Bogus Eivik of Space City Home Network. As a kids call it, S-C-H-N. And, Boogie, let's get right to it. We were impressed with Tatsui Emi yesterday. day, and we've been impressed a few other times over the course of the year.
Starting point is 00:39:51 It's just been remarkably inconsistent, and that's what I think is the hard thing to really rally around what we saw last night is because he'll follow up one great performance with two or three really subparer performances. Is that just a byproduct of who he's going to be? Is it a byproduct of his first year being in the United States playing baseball? What do you see as maybe trying to build off of something on a back-to-back start situation? Yeah, it's definitely. gotten to the point to where you're going to have to show it before people really buy in, because we've seen it for a start or two over the course of the first half.
Starting point is 00:40:27 Yeah, the stuff works. I mean, there's no question that when he's throwing strikes and when he's commanding the zone and when he's working ahead of hitters, that he can get major league hitters out. The question is, does he have the ability to do it consistently on a start in and out basis? We haven't seen it yet, but I do think there were some subtle differences yesterday that show maybe a little bit of maybe not just growth from him, but also the team understanding. You know, when we were down in the dugout with Joe is spotted before the game, he was talking about in my start, what he expected from him. And I was just talking about some changes that they thought they could make in the second half and some adjustments, you know, just from learning him. And I think first and foremost, we saw the use of the split finger,
Starting point is 00:41:16 change up, call it whatever you want. He used it more yesterday than in any start. It was effective. It adds a different element of kind of front and back changing speeds versus just trying to get you to swing and miss at spin off of a fastball. And it was also more slider to set up the fastball versus fastball to set up the slider. Just kind of leaning into your strength. His slider is his best pitch.
Starting point is 00:41:40 He threw it more than any of his other. pitches and it felt like the fastball was almost a secondary pitch once he could feel hitters waiting back a little bit trying to recognize spin. So just those things that, you know, not mechanical changes, not necessarily the stuff being different, but just different usage patterns, I think maybe can provide a little bit more confidence, which could hopefully lead to a little bit more consistency. Now, you look, you look at 140 Astro games a year, so it's hard to maybe go pitcher by picture, but is there a sign or something you see early in games that you know what you're going to see from Tatsui over the course of the night?
Starting point is 00:42:11 based on what you may be seeing the first or second inning? Yeah, if it looks like he's nibbling, right, just trying to be too fine on the edges of the zone, that always leads to the high pitch count that leads to the long inning, that leads to walk, it leads to, you know, usually the eventual big swing that scores a bunch of runs and puts up a crooked number. When he's in there and looks like he's comfortable throwing the ball more into the middle of the zone, trusting his stuff to work against hitters, that's when he's usually set up for success.
Starting point is 00:42:43 And even if it costs him a run or two throughout the course of an outing, those are the outings where he typically can eat up more innings and come out of it at the end of the outing and say, okay, on the whole, that was a good outing. Brian Bogus Evik with us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross on Sports Talk 790. And I know the Baltimore series really deflated a lot of folks, frankly deflated me, Brian.
Starting point is 00:43:07 And not the two victories against the Marlins are going to change all that, But is this five-game stretch just been a little bit of a microcosm of what we've gone through this entire season? I mean, when you're thinking about, all right, now should the Astros start selling at the deadline, you sit and look at the standings, you're three back, it ain't great, you're still under 500, you're still trailing the wild card. How are the players adjusting to this knowing that the consistency is there? There are a slightly under 500 team, but yet no one in this division has pulled away, giving them an eighth and ninth life. at this point. Yeah, you know, it's very different from a player standpoint versus a fan standpoint or even
Starting point is 00:43:48 even if you're a part of an organization in a front office or something where you're looking very big picture. Players are in the day to day. They really and truly, it sounds cliche, they don't care about anything other than what's right in front of them, getting ready for today, playing today, trying to win today. And if you win today, all is good. But, you know, going back to the Baltimore series, the thing that was, you know, most disappointing. You know, We've looked at the standings all throughout the year and judging against that, it's not that bad of a situation. But it's always, to me, you look at yourself, how are we playing? And for the course of, you know, most of June and into early July, it was, you know, we're playing pretty good baseball.
Starting point is 00:44:27 And we're getting there. We're getting to where we want to be. That series against Baltimore was concerning because it just wasn't good baseball. It was poor execution. It was a lot of walks again. So you know, you're hoping that that's just a blip on the radar and now moving into this Miami series. It seems like it kind of was, which, you know, you can weather that. That happens.
Starting point is 00:44:46 You have a bad series. You have a bad week, whatever. But as long as you can snap out of it quickly, then it's not too much to worry about. If the Astros are going to turn this around, of course, it's going to have to be with the help of the rotation. One turn through post-all-star break. How are you feeling about it overall? You know, I was actually looking at some of these. numbers this morning. Pretty good. If you look at it, so one time through for everybody,
Starting point is 00:45:12 they average just over five innings per start. So pitching into the sixth inning, which is huge, not just for the starters. You know, that helps the bullpen. Starters ERA is under four, it's a three, seven, five-ish, which you'll take that compared to what it was in the first half. We're not looking for dominance every single night. We're looking for consistently good keep us in the game. I think the thing that's a couple things that are that are most encouraging. Number one, we saw things from Spencer Arigetti and Tetsu I am that you can point to and say, okay, that could lead to sustained success going for, you know, some of the things
Starting point is 00:45:53 that we've been wanting to see, throwing more strikes, throwing the breaking balls in the zone. But also I think Renele Blanco looked great. He looked healthy. He looked like somebody that you can, you know, count on assuming he stays. healthy. And then the other thing you point to is that they did that one time through. And Hunter Brown still didn't have a good start. He still doesn't look like himself. You know, you need to get them right. You want to get him right. And I'm very confident that he's going to get right. So if the
Starting point is 00:46:19 pieces around him are doing well and moving forward, he's going to turn it on at some point. And then I think you're in a pretty good spot. Brian Bogusevic with us here on Sports Talk 790. I'm curious your former player's perspective, Brian, on Jeremy Pena. And can you, can you, can you kind of just take us through a little bit what he's been through because he's had these hamstring injuries and then he's had a couple of cramps and he's missed some time also with the calf injury what what is obviously he feels like he's not 100% but he's trying to do everything he can to be out there what are the things that he he is going through and putting himself through to continue to be out there well first of all it's frustrating right you know as much as we look at it
Starting point is 00:47:01 from the outside and it's frustrating when, you know, a guy who's your maybe second best offensive player can't stay in the lineup and you're like, man, you know, we're just not clicking on all cylinders. It's so frustrating for the players. You know, he's doing work in the weight room, doing work in the training room, trying to get through this. But the soft tissue injuries in a sport where you have to play every day, it's almost impossible to get 100% through and pass them during the season. It really takes an offseason of giving them, you know, weeks and weeks and weeks of rest and weeks and weeks of rehab and strength building to get back.
Starting point is 00:47:39 So it's just something that you have to try to manage. And it's a lot of trial and error. It's a lot of taking stock of how do you feel on a day-to-day basis, trying to be honest with yourself and maybe, you know, letting the manager know when I'm not feeling great and I need a day off, even if it's, you know, contrary to your nature to just, you know, when you want to be out there and play every day. It's just, you know, it's a pain. It is a huge pain in the butt to deal with leg, soft tissue injuries during the course of the season.
Starting point is 00:48:08 We were half joking about the impact of a Nate Pearson trade to Kansas City. And that's obviously to once again, like Lance McCullers last week, open up some roster spots. So does this mean that they're just trying to settle in that bullpen for if a couple of guys still can't be starters, i.e. and Mike Burroughs that he comes back on the major league roster and comes out of the bullpen. How do you shape up moving a low leverage reliever this time of year when everyone's running to their social media platforms to see what Astros players are coming to Houston as compared to leaving Houston? Yeah, it's just, you know, this time of year, first of all, you've got a bunch of guys coming off of the injure list. So there's just a roster crunch. It's just a numbers game to a degree, right? You have to, you can only have to, you can only have.
Starting point is 00:48:55 26 guys in the roster. You can only have 40 guys in the 40-man roster. So you've got to have, you know, make the most out of what you've got and you've got to accommodate the guys coming back. You have to also keep open spots for potential trade. So if you're, you know, moving we're less than two weeks to the trade deadline, you want to have the flexibility to add if the opportunity presents itself. So it's just kind of procedural things. And a lot of times it's the move or the moves before the actual move. But yeah, it's just kind of roster house cleaning up to this point. Is Yordon Alvarez the best hitter in baseball?
Starting point is 00:49:33 And if so, why? Yes, because all of the math and my eyeballs tell me that. It's incredible. I mean, he's starting to lap the field. I mean, you're looking at OPS numbers that are 10, 12 percent above the second highest OPS in all of baseball. He's getting close to, you know, triple crown leader. in not just the American League, but all across Major League Baseball. I just, I'm most impressed on a day-to-day basis, not when he hits a ball 500 feet,
Starting point is 00:50:05 but just some of the pitches that he hits out, which are pitches that you really shouldn't hit hard, let alone hit out of the ballpark, or, you know, he can go through these stretches where he's either hitting everything for home runs or he's just getting hit after hit after hit. I think his batting average is close to 500 over the course of the last eight to 10 games or something. It's just, it's the combination of power and just pure hitting, which there's nothing even close. If you look at the guys who are, you know, 25 home runs plus or the guys who are average 300 plus, there's no crossover in that group.
Starting point is 00:50:40 And he's basically at the top of both of them. All right, there you have it. That is Brian Bogus-evick with us from Space City Home Network. Bogi, thank you for the time. As always, do this again next week. And look forward to catching you on the broadcast tonight beginning at 630. All right, guys. You got Brian Bogus Heavik with us here every Wednesday on Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 00:51:00 Is there anybody arguing that Youron's not the best in the business today? I feel like with Judge not heard, well, Aaron Judge would probably be up there. Some people are... But he's been gone quite a bit, hasn't? He's hit 60 home runs, and he's had multiple 50 home run seasons. But you know what's funny, he has an MVP, right? He's got a 60 home run season. Both he's back-to-back MVP's.
Starting point is 00:51:22 Aaron Judge. And that's crazy for a guy who has... has a hellaciously high strikeout rate. Yeah. And again, I don't know the numbers
Starting point is 00:51:31 in front of me, but I'm going to presume that Yordon hasn't come close to what judges strikeout rate has been. I mean, Yordine's been,
Starting point is 00:51:39 you don't have to. I'm just saying, I would imagine judges is higher. Yeah, but judges have gotten better since earlier in his career.
Starting point is 00:51:48 But it still feels like that even when Yordaun is not hitting, it's not because he's taking 13 strikeouts over 26 plate appearances where I feel like I've watched a lot of Aaron Jones and maybe it's because it was against the Astros, frankly, that
Starting point is 00:52:02 he's had so many big whiffs and he didn't obviously do very much in the World Series but yeah, I mean Astros pitching is always not always but often done a very very good job against him. All right we got shut your ball my ass up and ain't nobody got time for that coming up at the bottom of the hour here on on Spree. 1120
Starting point is 00:52:18 Sports Talk 790. It is Mattis Ross with you until 2 o'clock this afternoon. Thanks again to Brian with us every Wednesday at 11 o'clock. We'll have Brian McTackard in the same spot in 24 hours from now here on Sports Talks at 10. Hopefully talking about an Astros sweep and moving further up, the American League West Standings. Moving on up. Standing 790 only has the Astros three games out of first place.
Starting point is 00:52:41 Yes. I am on a group text with a bunch of NBA fans. Okay. And we were talking about LeBron's, the Miami Heat's, faux announcement. and every single one of them and there are some deep LeBron fans in this group are like just announce it now you're just dragging this on
Starting point is 00:53:05 and then you got Rich Paul sometimes saying it's going to be dissent today then you got Rich Paul saying no he's going to take his time I think we're getting and I don't really care about the media I think fan fatigue is like just just make it for mind we appreciate you we know who you are
Starting point is 00:53:20 but I think when he announces it hopefully it's very very soon that people will start to get excited about what will be the possibilities of wherever he happens to go, whether he's going back home to Cleveland, whether he tries going to Philadelphia, whether he goes to Miami, whether he thinks of a Golden State. I wonder if he's getting all his ducks in a row for like, this is where I'm going, plus this is my last season. That's what I, that's my gut feeling.
Starting point is 00:53:42 That's my gut feeling. Let's get the, let's get the Netflix documentary lined up. Let's get the miniseries going. Let's get the cruise lined up, filming everything. But it doesn't take months. he's known about this for a long time. He wasn't going to be a Laker. I think the last time he played for the Lakers,
Starting point is 00:53:59 he knew that when he walked off the floor with that last time, he was done, done with the Laker. Now, again, you've got a lot of teams courting you. You're not the player that you were, but it's just, and you made up a point a week ago what you do agree with.
Starting point is 00:54:14 Everybody in the media trying to generate stories off this. Yeah, ESPN is squeezing this lemon too. Yeah. If we, I haven't really spent a whole lot of time, Well, except for when I saw the Miami thing, I was like, oh, let me put a few bucks on that. Go ahead and trade a few dollars on that. If Miami made a mistake. I'm going to say, I am not worried about how Ramona Shelbur and Spencer Days or Chris Haynes or any of the other people.
Starting point is 00:54:38 I mean, we could worry about the Nate Pearson trade. I was watching the World Cup. I'm more invested in the World Cup or what the Astros are doing or whatever than where LeBron is going because he ain't coming to Houston. Now, if Houston were in the, I would maybe feel that way more. if they were one of the teams in the running, it'd be like, come on, dude, let's go ahead and make a decision, but I don't care,
Starting point is 00:54:59 because the rockets aren't involved. Yeah. I don't know. I'm just, as an NBA observer, he's not a great player anymore. Which is, which I think is aggravating more because he's not a great player anymore.
Starting point is 00:55:08 So, kind of have to know, not necessarily know your role, but... I think if you, and I'm not saying you're doing this, because I know people who are LeBron haters and they want to whip themselves in a tizzy
Starting point is 00:55:17 and hate everything that he does, and there's literally a guy like messaging me on Instagram, like, he's, just getting, all he's doing is seeking attention right now. I'm like he hasn't said a word. Every story, every podcast, everything that's come out hasn't been from LeBron James's mouth. It's everybody else wanting to talk about him. But I, but I do say that Rich Paul is his mouthpiece for LeBron. Rich Paul is out there and Rich Paul and LeBron James are drawn to the hip. So it may not be LeBron
Starting point is 00:55:45 directly speaking, but when Rich Paul speaks, it's probably a lot of it coming out of. I might as I say he's a puppet holder. I don't listen to Rich Paul's podcast. So I know, but at the Every time he says a comment, it does make a news headline. So LeBron could stop all that. LeBron could say, enough rich, stop going on podcast, stop doing this thing. Let's just make the decision and go on. But I think he's milking a little bit. He can also say, I don't care.
Starting point is 00:56:09 Yeah, exactly. He's like, I'm going to let. I'm LeBron freaking James. He'll do this what I want. He didn't write one single ESPN headline. He didn't go on one single podcast. But Rich Paul did, though. Okay, but Rich Paul, he's not on Rich Paul's podcast.
Starting point is 00:56:23 But that's not the point. The point is Rich Paul speaks for LeBron James. When you think of Rich Paul, what do you think of the next thing that thinks out on your mind? LeBron James. Clutch Sports. And the Max Kellerman podcast. Okay. What were the topics on the Max Kellerman and Rich Paul podcast?
Starting point is 00:56:39 Do we promote that one too? I don't think so. Oh, God, do we promote everybody's podcast? I just, I think there is a little fatigue. And again, I don't care about the reporters. I'm caring about as a basketball fan that's excited about the season. coming up and I think Brosky knows where he wants to go and he's enjoying this media charade. He's like, man, I may be only 70% of the player that I used to be, but if I want to hold out or I want to not tell you something for a while, guess that all these media people are doing?
Starting point is 00:57:09 Because I'm freaking LeBron James. Here we go. Max and Rich debate the sports most iconic franchises. LeBron's next move. from the Cowboys to the Yankees and the Lakers and the Knicks. Who is the most iconic franchises? We got to promote that. Rich Paul's talking about that. We got a-Margallman.
Starting point is 00:57:29 We got to promote that on that. The USP didn't write a headline about that. Just Kendrick Perkins on the podcast. Talking about the Knicks Championship. We didn't talk about that either. They're talking about other stuff on the podcast. Rich Paul is LeBron James. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:57:45 You're not going to shake me off of that. It is what it is. It is what it is. All right, let's do this. We got to shut your bum ass up, but anybody got time for that coming up in a few minutes. By the way, the Rockets preseasoned the first two games against Dallas, which are in Macau?
Starting point is 00:58:03 Am I saying it right? Macau, yeah. You're going to go to the Venetian on the Macau? I'm not going on the trip. Why aren't you going? Because I don't want to go. Okay. And it's just a...
Starting point is 00:58:13 What do you got against China? I don't want to go. I heard Macau is very nice. Very swanky. You are five diamond mat. That is true. and I'm sure the casinos there are absolutely amazing. Oh, I think they're immaculate.
Starting point is 00:58:24 October 9th is a Friday. 7 a.m. tip time. Ooh, the Venetian Macat looks real nice. And then October 11th, tip time is 5 a.m. Houston time. Oh. Say again? What was the first one? 7 a.m.?
Starting point is 00:58:40 Okay. On a Friday. Uh-huh. 5 a.m. on Sunday, October the 11th. Ooh. I call the 7 a.m. one with you. Have you talked to Wex from Kline about this yet? No.
Starting point is 00:58:51 Okay. I want to see how that goes. It's fine. I don't care. They can do it. All right. Shut your bum ass up. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Starting point is 00:58:58 It's all straight ahead. It's a Matt Thomas show. Maybe I should go. Can I go for just a couple days and go back? How many hours of flight to China from here? Let's see. Houston to McHugh. Can you fly in Macau nonstop?
Starting point is 00:59:12 Do you have to change planes? I think it looks like a nonstop with Eva Air. That's a Taiwanese base, I believe. leave. Oh, no, it's connecting. Ooh, it's going to take you 21 hours. Ooh, it's going to be $1,200 bucks. Each way or one? Yeah, I would save each way, right? Round trip.
Starting point is 00:59:31 That's not bet. $2,200? Oh, $1,200? No, $1,200. Oh, $1,200. But if I have to sit in business class, what's that going to run me? You're going to business class? Excuse me. What would that run the Rockets? I don't know. Yeah. What's that going to run Tillman? He can catch you a check. You can go into Meltta.
Starting point is 00:59:51 It's going to be $1,200. $1,200 bucks. Yeah, I'm a trip. I'm good. I think I'll stay here with you. You know, we can have breakfast together. Okay. Because I'll spend the night at your house.
Starting point is 01:00:02 I'll wake up and I'll make you an omelet. Oh, yeah. I told you've been practicing my omelets. Although you said you're the omelet king. I am. You know, the key is constantly stirring the eggs. Don't let him sit for any length of time. I don't, I think you just stir from the outer edge to the inside.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Yeah, but you got to keep going. You got to keep moving it around like that. Then doesn't it fall apart? Not really. If you're a whisker. Oh, so you're whisking? Mm-hmm. Hmm.
Starting point is 01:00:26 I'm not shubbling him a whisker. I mean, okay. See, let me show you the motion right there. Okay. I thought you do it right there. 713-212-790. Shut your bum ass up. Ain't nobody got time for that?
Starting point is 01:00:37 Next on Sports Talk 790. Ain't nobody getting time? Ain't nobody getting time for that? Ain't nobody getting time for day? Ain't nobody getting time for me. Ain't nobody getting time. You 18 Wheeler on 610 at Memorial? I FN.
Starting point is 01:00:57 hate you. Oh my gosh. Shut your ball mess up. Straight into it. Ain't nobody got time for you running me off the side of the road, bitch. Hey nobody got time today. Whoa. Oh, I was so mad that I almost shot a photo of his driver, not driver's license, but
Starting point is 01:01:12 it's of his license plate. I was so pissed. And I have been in a good driving mood. I have a new route here to the office every day, which is way less stressful. I get off equipment off of 59. I thought you were going to hire that driver. Well, I need to win the lottery for that. to happen.
Starting point is 01:01:28 Okay. Rossi, when I win the lottery, everything changes. Okay? And I mean everything. Okay? So, yeah, I go equipment. I go through Lorraine, I go through the Heights, I get on to Taylor, I go on I-10, I go to 6-10, and everything is just free and easy.
Starting point is 01:01:48 Until I'd jerk today on 6-20. Oh, I was mad. I'm sorry for going first, but I just had to get that off my chest. That's okay, Matt. Thank you. Can you? Can you have time for that? 7-13-21, 2-2, 4.
Starting point is 01:01:59 5797.97-13-212-1-2-5-7-9 if you're mad at somebody or something happened or somebody at your office is talking your head off and you just need to get back to work. Tell me, nobody got time for that. Hey nobody got time for that. Okay. Ross, what you got this week? What's the matter with you? I'm going to go after this guy, John Bolt, on the Twitterverse. First of all, I go to his page and he's just like trashing Jose Al-Tuvae every single post that he has.
Starting point is 01:02:28 so he's obsessed with hating on Jose Altuva. Then he tweeted us where we posted the Joe Espada video yesterday. A shout out to Jonathan for help on posting that video. Thank you, Jonathan. And he put Altuve batting cleanup as a prime example of how dumb this guy really is. Well, okay. I mean, I guess in theory, a guy who's got an OPS plus of 95 is not a prototypical cleanup hitter. But who else do you want in there?
Starting point is 01:02:55 lately you have Christian Walker hitting 182 with an OPS of 600 oh by the way this is his first start back from a hip injury that he has been missing some time with even though he did pinch hit the day before Jose Altuve has been hitting hotter in the month of July he's got an OPS of over 760 in the month he's got a couple of home runs you're not going to put Taylor Tremel Lucas Spence or Christian Vasquez there so what exactly you're talking about these people who want to criticize and call a manager dumb for making a completely reasonable lineup decision, shut your bum ass up. Shit your bum ass up, man. And ain't nobody got time for you. Ain't nobody got time for that? You went off the top rope.
Starting point is 01:03:40 I appreciate that very much. Oh, this is Bolt Johnson. What is this dude's name? Yeah, he's the one that tweeted us calling Joe a spotted doom for putting Altuve clean up. He doesn't even follow me. So John Bolt, shut your bum ass up. He doesn't follow me either. But that's...
Starting point is 01:03:55 Shit your bum ass up, man. You know what, here, let's go ahead and hit the good old-fashioned mute. I'm going to do mute as well. Bye, John Bo. Oh, suck it, John Bo. We just tag team muted that guy. I love this. Shit your bummed ass up, man.
Starting point is 01:04:07 We just fist bumped each other. John, then, what's the matter with you? I will never hear from him ever again. It's great. Mine's another Astros one, actually. Yes. I think it's one the most, I want to be nice, not really. Why in the world, if you have a losing team,
Starting point is 01:04:24 where you're going to trade your star caliber player, your MVP player talking about let's trade Yordon. What sense does that make? If you want other people to come in there and build up a team, you're going to want a piece that people are going to want to gravitate towards.
Starting point is 01:04:41 Yordon is truly the only hope of the Astros going back to being the World Series. That is the only person we truly have that's going to take it there. And you're saying because you're upset because we're losing, or we as an Astros are losing. and are we to just get rid of your arm?
Starting point is 01:04:56 For what? To be down like the Rockies for what? Yeah, we're not a... The Astros are not a poverty franchise. Okay? If you're Pittsburgh pirate fan, Jonathan, to your point, you're used to this. If you are Miami Marlins fan, typically in the last 20 years, you're used to this. Jim Crane spends money.
Starting point is 01:05:14 He just doesn't spend as much money as you want him to spend. Now, the decisions that have hurt this franchise, and I don't mean to interrupt your, shut your bum ass up here, but... but the Jose Abraeu deal was terrible. The Tatsu Emi deal so far has been terrible, but they have spent money. You just have to spend it wiser, and that's where a town evaluator comes into play. And if you want to criticize what Jim Crane has done
Starting point is 01:05:40 in the last handful of years is, did he pull the trigger on a general manager that should still be the general manager of this team? And if you did fire James Cook like you did right after you won, you had to have a lieutenant or replacement in place locked and ready to go. Instead, you've gone sideways with some deals that have taken the team back. But as I said yesterday on the show, not every team, every team in sports goes through a downtime. Literally in every sport, every team.
Starting point is 01:06:12 So, Jonathan, I apologize, I'm acquiescing and giving it back to you. No, I'm just saying, like, let's, you know, let's, okay, let the Astros trade yord on. what? For what? What are we doing here? Okay, we're on Tray Yordon and what are we doing? Because you, and I see all the time, even on Twitter, oh, we're wasting his time, his prime time. Okay. Has he left? Does he want to leave? Waste his time. That's our guy. That's our a a asterer. We're going to stick with him.
Starting point is 01:06:36 And he's being paid very, very well. He's not, yeah, exactly. He's not complaining. So I just think, shit your bum ass up. Shit your bum ass up, man. Thank you, Jonathan. There you go. He is a franchise cornerstone. You keep, you lock him up. or you give them an eight-year deal or whatever the hell is going to take.
Starting point is 01:06:54 Immediately. Now, of course, that's going to we'll have to figure out what the labor strife, what's going to go on with that, and what that'll look like. But I'm with you, Jonathan. All right. Thank you very much, Jonathan, for that. 713-212-5-790. If you want to tell somebody to shut their bum ass, we are here for you for the next 20 minutes.
Starting point is 01:07:11 You got anything else? Are we ready to go to the phones? I think I'm good. All right, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Let's talk to Larry in Spring on 7-90. Ari, what's the matter with you? Hey, how you doing, Matt, Ross, and Jonathan? Hey, Larry. Actually, you all kind of stole my thunder.
Starting point is 01:07:29 You know, I've been listening to you all since Ross first came up, was a pup. He was a baby. And I listen to your tent engine show every night. Thank you. And I was listening to you all try to explain to these guys. I hear guys talk about they've been watching baseball for 50 years and everything, but they still don't understand.
Starting point is 01:07:48 I mean, prior to us. product. I mean, what would they do? You know what I'm saying? If they were in that position. But my thing is, I haven't heard not one person called in and give them credit for the win
Starting point is 01:08:04 with the same team that they won them fired when they lose, which makes no sense to me. And as far as Cam Smith is concerned when Cal Tucker
Starting point is 01:08:19 first came up. I think it took him about two years before he really got in his groove, you know? I don't think these a real astro fan, you know, calling. But anyway, you know, hey, I'm a long time to listen. I can't call like I used to. But hey, you all have a great week.
Starting point is 01:08:37 Larry, thank you for the phone calls. You set your bum ass up, man. Not you, Larry. You can know you. Shut your bum ass up. No, no, Larry. Keep your bum ass open. Hey, nobody got time for that. Yeah, you were talking about the non-astro fans.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Thank you, Larry. You're not, you're not, you as astrophants, you're not any different than any other city. You're highly reactionary. Sports are highly reactionary. You don't, you always think about what's in front of you. You never think about what's in the past or what could be the future. Sports fans are stupid. A lot of them, I'm just saying.
Starting point is 01:09:11 People are stupid. Have you ever been lying at the grocery store? Have you been in any winnyware? Have you been in a parking lot? People are stupid. But it's different. You see Texans fans there at least have hopeful cases. their shrouds and turn it around.
Starting point is 01:09:22 Okay, you know, we have these pieces. We need an offensive line. You go to Astros. You hear Astros fans, they think everything's frozen over. Let me ask. Let me tell you this, Jonathan. I don't know if you have a 401k or not. If I got rid of my 401k or traded stocks like I felt about my sports teams, I'd be broke.
Starting point is 01:09:43 I look at my 401K every day. And I shouldn't because it makes no sense. No zero cents to do it. Maybe once a month. Maybe. Probably not even that. I agree with you. Probably about every once a quarter to be appropriate.
Starting point is 01:09:54 But I do it every day because I'm just manic that way. Bottom line is this. I don't all of a sudden call my financial planner and say, change this around every single day. It's an ebbs and flows. And I know that the flow hasn't been great the last couple of years. It's been a while. So we've tasted a postseason victory.
Starting point is 01:10:10 I promise you Astro fans, if the Astros don't make a playoffs, there are going to be wholesale changes. I cannot imagine a scenario. And I like Joe. Spada a lot. Matter of fact, I was shooting the, you know what, with him yesterday for about a half an hour on the dugout. I like Dana Brown, but Jim has shown no long-term, hey, well, we've got our core guys. I think when you leave a pair of guys under contract for their last year, you basically
Starting point is 01:10:41 say either you make it, you get us to where we need to go, or I'm going to replace you. So if you are in that group that doesn't like those two particular people, I can feel very confident. confident if they don't make the playoffs, that you're going to see changes. And as far as the players are concerned, contracts are contracts. You loved Jose Altuve five years ago, Ross, when he signed the contract that was going to be kept him as an astro forever. You can't bitch and moan about it now. Because you knew if you were a smart baseball fan that he was going to have some aggression
Starting point is 01:11:09 at some point in his life. You just did. And honestly, if you were signed Kyle Tucker, I don't care what it cost, that has not panned out for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it certainly didn't pan out for the Chicago Cubs. If you were a Sine Alex Bramman under any cost that has not panned out whether he was a Boston Red Socker or Chicago Cubs. Now
Starting point is 01:11:28 Garrett Cole was very good for the Yankees but he also had to go through T.J. It cost him a year and a half. There hasn't been. One of Sy Young there. Very good. But there has been so many players that have left that you kept saying you, proverbial astro fan, I want him here. I don't
Starting point is 01:11:44 care what it cost. And we haven't been bit by it. Now, there are two sides of the point on this. If you let those guys go, you have to have reinforcements. And the reinforcements haven't been as good. And I understand that. And that's where you are.
Starting point is 01:12:01 That's where you are. Underperforming 500 team. 1145, sports talk, 790. Shut your bum ass up. Ain't nobody got time for that still ahead of until the top of the hour. 713-212-5-7-9. If you want to join us, if you got something you want to talk about, that you're mad about. Come on. We don't bite.
Starting point is 01:12:18 7-13-212-5-7. 9-0. 1151 on Sports Talk 790. Matt and Ross with you. Astros with the win. We'll give you the highlights of that coming up in about 10 minutes. Playing the news at noon coming up. By the way, there was a guy on social media that thinks that the foe pot that the Miami Heat did could be impactful for hundreds of million dollars in sports betting.
Starting point is 01:12:46 Do you really, do you see that? I mean, I guess you did run to a couch, didn't you? I wouldn't put a few bucks on the Miami Heat? I did. Which would be a gut feeling hit for you? you. It would be a long shot. Yeah, it was a long shot.
Starting point is 01:13:00 When you said that, it was like 8%. Now it's at 50. Yeah. But do you think that was done to manipulate the market? I mean, could you... That's interesting. Absolutely possible. Because you can now, because you...
Starting point is 01:13:12 Nobody forced you to do it. No. Nobody forced you to do what you just decided to do. No, no. And the odds have gone up since I did it in the middle of the night. So I can cash out a profit right now. Wow. Is that promo code 790?
Starting point is 01:13:25 See, Coucho can be your friend, especially on the prediction market. Thus, the prediction. market. Yes. 713-212-5-7-90. Shut your bum-ass up. Ain't nobody got time for that. Let's talk to Gary on 7-90. Gary, what do you got this week?
Starting point is 01:13:43 Yes, Gary. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Yes, sir. All right. Thank you, good stuff. Yeah, thank you, Gary. Anybody got time for that.
Starting point is 01:13:58 All right. Brevity is the key. Brian and Pearland. What's the matter with you, Brian? Well, you know, there's another station that I follow on social media, but I don't listen to them. But they're further down the AM dial, and they put out big news today. But apparently they're moving to FM, but nobody listens to their station anyway. And they got real original, and they're going to call themselves the fan.
Starting point is 01:14:23 Like, nobody's ever heard that. What was the ticket taken? So the other station down the dial, man, Churchill Obama is something. Ain't nobody care anyway. your station sucks. We're all $7.90 for life, except between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Which the half the time we can't hear that show anyway,
Starting point is 01:14:41 because they're not working. But I digress, but normally they're in Astros baseball. Shit your bum ass up, man. Yeah, to that other station, shut your bum ass up. Nobody cares. Don't me listen to your station anyway. Ain't nobody got time for that. Thank you, Brian.
Starting point is 01:14:58 Ross, a comment. I had not heard the news. I had not either. I'm wishing them all the best. The fan is not an original name for a sports station. No, it's not. You know what? We keep it straightforward here on Sports Talk 7-90.
Starting point is 01:15:13 You know what we do? We talk sports. I want to say we are the only sports talk with the numbers of our station in America. I don't think that's actually accurate. All right, well, let's, you know what? Talk about your Instagram account, and I will put in. Okay. Now there's sports radio.
Starting point is 01:15:34 Ah, maybe that's what I'm thinking of. But there is, I don't believe there's another sports talk with a number. Okay. Now, I could be wrong because I'm not watching. I thought there was. Oh, you know what? There is, uh, nope, that's not it. I went to a Google search, Sports Talk.
Starting point is 01:15:53 Yeah, I could be wrong. Follow me on Instagram at SportsRV. I really would appreciate it. Oh, I saying corrected. Sports Talk 105.1. FM in Let's see Somewhere in Wisconsin
Starting point is 01:16:08 So I was right Yeah you're right And I'm sorry I forgive you Follow me on Instagram At Sports RV You know what follow Matt too At SportsMT
Starting point is 01:16:20 Let me tell you trying to grow the show You can be on FM You can be on AM You can be on Instagram You can be on the apps Ross and Matt Weekdays 10 to 2 We're going to talk about all the teams.
Starting point is 01:16:35 We're going to love on some. We're going to hate on others. But we are going to talk about everything. We are beating down in Bush. 20 hours in a row of the same crap over and over and over. Right here, 7.90 a.m. We talk about everything. Everybody got time for that.
Starting point is 01:17:03 Put the tip jar. I don't care. I'll put a 20 spot in there. Anything from you? You just want to stay silent. Get your bum ass up, man. It's probably fine. I can respect that. Oh, by the way, I wanted to say, we did talk about this earlier.
Starting point is 01:17:20 Clark Crawford is asking, about clarification on Lambert, he is under team control. Okay, good. Yep. So the Astros can put it together a guy qualifying offer for him. So anybody got time for me calling him in rental? I was wrong. Anybody got time for that? You made a mistake?
Starting point is 01:17:36 All the time. Shut your bum ass up, May. Daily. Who else can give you shut your bum ass up, man? Who else can give you believing or not? Who else is going to give you to tell the truth? It's the best show in the country. I don't disagree with that.
Starting point is 01:17:51 And thus, the world. Yes. On the I-Hart Radio app. Yes. For free. For free. From New Zealand. From New Zealand.
Starting point is 01:18:00 From New Orleans and New Zealand. Well, hopefully you guys here in Houston. To Dyken Park. Tony. What's the matter with you, Tony? What's going on, gentlemen? The best show? Yo.
Starting point is 01:18:13 I think I ran into your guy yesterday, Matt. I was on Highway 8. Who's my guy? Oh, okay, I got you. I got you. All right. The guy that got, see, I'm a listener. I heard the Tony dance. I'm a morning guy also.
Starting point is 01:18:27 Nice. So you love that. Yes. And Ross loved that. So this guy decides he's going to try to cut me off as we're going into the easy pass lane. and he's going to come over the solid line. And we are maybe about three or four hundred feet from those rubber poles. And of course, my Camry XLE has a lot of speed, and it's a hybrid, so I push it.
Starting point is 01:18:57 And he had to go back the other way and hit three of those poles, Matt, because he was being a smarty pair. So ain't nobody got time for you being an idiot on Highway 8. and don't cut my boy Matt Thomas off. That's not I'm talking about Tony. That's exactly right. Yeah. Shit your bum ass up, man. Also, that last caller, listen, man,
Starting point is 01:19:22 nobody's got time for your mouth, okay? Because when it's late night, and I work for Viking Corbett 1, and I spot the area 45 on 610 from 7 to 11. That's wasting your money, then. 713-212-5-790. Shit your bum-ass up. man.
Starting point is 01:19:43 Shit your bum man. That dude's weird. Yeah. I agree. All right. Gary and Spring, last chance for you. Gary, you there?
Starting point is 01:19:56 Yes, sir. I'm here. Sorry, I missed you earlier. Sure. This is one I've called in earlier on, and I keep saying it because I see it's happening right before my eyes. All the nays there is for EMI, and that's everybody. You know, he is going to be the, if he win the,
Starting point is 01:20:13 Astros make the playoffs, he will be slotted as the number three starter because he's going to get better and better and better as the season matures. So all of your naysayers that make fun of my guy, Emae, shut your bum ass up, man. And if you don't believe it gives watch, don't believe it's fun. Shut your bum ass up, man. Ain't nobody got time for that. Wow. I was actually amused by that, actually. that's pretty great
Starting point is 01:20:43 he drops Bruno Mars on us I've been I mean look I've been hopeful for Tatsu Yemi and I think he can be good just to this point he's not good nope nope this point has been a disaster
Starting point is 01:20:57 I'm sorry yesterday it was good I got some news for you if you're starting if you're playing a playoff series and your number three starter has an ERA of 5.59 you're probably not in the playoffs. Hey, it was over six yesterday. So he's whittling it down. He's whittling.
Starting point is 01:21:19 Or whittling. He can do either one if you're lying. And that would shut your bum ass up. Thank you, Matt. Anybody got time for that? All right. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212. It's strange show. 7-1-3-2-5-790. I love you all. shout out to not that timmy b sent me uh the best uh the best direct message ever maybe in the history radio but i can't really i can't really put it out there but thank you not timibbee appreciate you 713212 5 790 the news at noon with a little will smith to honor the asteris performance uh gordony's going to stop by and join us at oh really 1250 today that's good what's the big news well it's a nm day at the cc media days oh thank goodness
Starting point is 01:22:10 How are they doing? I mean, so far, they're probably undefeated. They got the number one recruited class in the country. Yes. And so they're going to finally reach the SEC Football Championship. You know who's going to take them? The greatest coach of all time, Mike Yoko. I like Mike Yolko.
Starting point is 01:22:28 It just makes me laugh. What makes you laugh? Because at the end of two years ago, all the Aggies wanted him fired. Yes, they did. Then he has this great season. Well, it couldn't beat Texas at DKR. I was there. you're welcome and then failed in the playoffs
Starting point is 01:22:44 all of a sudden he got an extension right yeah he's got yeah he's yeah you have to college you have to extend guys we're super late by way yeah it's funny oh this is my fault this is the matt thomas show with ross yeah yeah yeah five to three
Starting point is 01:23:08 those will look for this week tomorrow as they hand the barlins their eighth straight loss don't get me wrong shot I don't got it going on. And New York is the city that we know don't sleep. And we all know that L.A. and Philly stay jiggy.
Starting point is 01:23:23 But on the snake, Miami bringing heat for real. You all right now. Garrett Cole, by the way, pitching today. We'll give you update on that right now. But we don't worry about gear. Here we go. I'm throwing for the Yankees today. My fault.
Starting point is 01:23:36 My fault. I'm sorry. It's a day game. It's sweltering out here. Why am I not talking about the Astros and standing seven-nighting? I'm sweating bullets over here. Standing. 790
Starting point is 01:23:49 You want those standings, don't you, Rossi? Oh, for Pete's sake. It's pretty warm in New York. 12. Ted. Let's get to the news at noon, please. Jesus, what's the matter with me? And more importantly, what's the matter with you? Well, I can do this voice rather if you prefer, man.
Starting point is 01:24:08 Hey, if y'all, hey, send me y'all text me y'all's numbers. I will get you on my text right of. That's been sending me Elmo videos. Did you like the one I sent yesterday? I was out at a sports bar and unable to watch it. And then I forgot. I'm sorry. I understand. I understand. I'm a poor texter.
Starting point is 01:24:24 I understand. I want to watch it right now? Can I put it on the microphone? No, because I think this almost swears. But I'm sending you one per day. I would like to send you 10. But I'm going to send you one per day. Okay. All right. Now are the news at news. Thank you, Matthew. Yes, the Astros with the victory over the Miami.
Starting point is 01:24:43 Marlins, as they have won the series. Today, they go for a sweep with their ace, Peter Lambert, on the hill. but yesterday, great news all around. Tatuya I Mai with a quality start and the win. He's six and four on the season, by the way, Matt. Tells you how much win loss matters. Oh, I think I think Dana Brown this morning said that the Astros are 9 and 5 in EMA starts, which I would have been, I would have said, oh, you're full of it.
Starting point is 01:25:11 Yeah, one of those they gave him like a nine run lead and they were able to hang on for dear life. Kansas City game, I remember that one I do. So yeah, it's not like he's been incredible. He's just been getting a lot of run support. Six innings, though, just four hits, one earned run. He did walk three batters, but also struck out eight on 96 pitches. So very encouraging from him. But we've been encouraged by Tatsuya Imiah before, so we'll see what happens there.
Starting point is 01:25:33 Josh Hader gets the save after a couple of runs given up by A.J. Blue Ball on, was it a home run? Was it a two-run shot, I think, maybe in the seventh? Sure, why not? Why is Gary Cole giving us a rundown of the game? Maybe it wasn't a maybe Maybe didn't Josh Hater You're throwing me off That was Austin Powers
Starting point is 01:25:54 And Josh Hader Josh Hater got his 11th save And it's and it's two out All right This is your fault There you go Astros go for the sweep And they are currently on standing
Starting point is 01:26:09 790 as you mentioned Three games back in the American League West Oh yeah They are four games back in the wild card with the twins, Orioles, and Mariners all ahead of them. And then the Red Sox holding on to the third spot. So to get a wildcard spot, they would have to overcome four teams. To win the American League West, they would only have to overcome two teams.
Starting point is 01:26:31 One week from tomorrow, I will make the final decision. Whether the Astros should be sellers or buyers of the deadline. Okay, one week from tomorrow. One week. They should sell. All right, that's my opinion. Hi, my name is Ross. Don't you premature anything like that?
Starting point is 01:26:46 No, prematuring. I'm saying they should sell. Oh, damn it. I'll fight you. All right. So also some big news today, the Chiefs have unveiled their renderings for a $3 billion. Yes. Dome Stadium.
Starting point is 01:26:58 Tell them where it's at, by the way, sports RV. In Kansas City. No, keep going. Kansas. There you go. Isn't it in Kansas City, Kansas or is it somewhere else in Kansas? No, they're going to Kansas City, Kansas right across the border. Yeah, so it's in Kansas City.
Starting point is 01:27:11 Isn't just the tip? It's in Kansas of the city? How do I explain this? There isn't a comp on this. It looks like an upside-down Pringle. Kind of like a Legion Stadium. I think So-Fi is kind of like that too, right? Yes.
Starting point is 01:27:28 So the upside-down Pringle Stadium design is in. That's what the Kansas City Chief Stadium looks like. 70,000 seats will be built with the intention of amplifying cron noise, thus the lower roof. Ah, okay. They want to be the lot of stadium in the NFL. Apparently it's a pissing match between Seattle Seahawk fan and Kansas City fan for a lot of stadium. Not on the stadium list.
Starting point is 01:27:50 Houston Texans, not loudest. So it looks like it is domed but with glass on the top. Yeah. So that's good because didn't they have people losing the, losing appendages to frostbite one time the last couple years? And another thing that helps that
Starting point is 01:28:08 going to the suburbs? 20,000 parking spots. That's it. Prime tailgating. That's great. Meanwhile, if you want to go to a Las Vegas radar game, number of parking spots available, I think of $5,600. Five or $600? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:22 Really? They want everybody to park at the casinos. Go over and game. Oh, I had no. Yeah. Damn, that's crazy. All right, there you go, Matt.
Starting point is 01:28:29 Let's see. Elsewhere, LeBron James could be going to the Miami Heat. Brown James. As the Miami Heat posted a link to a scheduled live stream titled LeBron James introductory press conference,
Starting point is 01:28:47 followed by the date July 27th to its YouTube channel. What a team spokesperson has said, though, was a mistake. The spokesperson telling Shams Sharani on Tuesday, the club's social media department was preparing for the possibility of James signing and mistakenly posted a link to the team's YouTube page. The post was later deleted. Okay.
Starting point is 01:29:11 So I originally said mistakes happen with youngens. I'm assuming that the people that work at the social media department, as in every team's social media department, they're all 25 and less typically. Okay. Do I go simple mistake or do you go That was such a bad faux pa you're out I would imagine somebody got fired over it I don't know how do you do How do you schedule that and post it
Starting point is 01:29:33 And how do you even go to a computer and type that in You know what I mean? Yeah you see we had to type in LeBron James introductory press conference That's why it feels like it's happening and well Put a few shekels down on it Hopefully it turns out okay Now I'm rooting for you
Starting point is 01:29:48 Thank you because you'll get a gut feeling And I'll get some cash Let's go It's a win win I can get that Couchy account. Maybe I can help myself out. Yeah, let's go, Maddie. Use code 790 at signup. Heat President Pat Riley said last week that he and newly acquired superstar Yanastin Takumpo would welcome James back to Miami. Now, apparently Pat Riley and LeBron left on, they didn't have an amical departure.
Starting point is 01:30:13 They left by guys, be eye guys, right? Well, LeBron was dumb. He wanted Eric Spulster fired at the first season. Pat Riley is 81. How are you going to tell Pat Riley is an a hole? And Eric Spulster is like one of the turnout to be one of the greatest coaches of all time. John James, not a great coach picker. Who's been his coaches over the years? David Blatt, Mike Brown. They won with Tyron Lou.
Starting point is 01:30:33 Yeah. One with Frank Vogel. This is honestly part of my goat conversation of why I do have LeBron James as the greatest of all time. Because he gets coaches fire more than Michael does? No, because Phil Jackson's the greatest coach of all time. How many different coaches did Michael Jordan win with? He won with Philip J. Jackson. Okay.
Starting point is 01:30:54 That's it. No Doug Collins. He liked Doug Collins. He liked Doug Collins. But didn't know. With him in Washington, too. Didn't win there. Didn't win there, no.
Starting point is 01:31:01 So Phil Jackson, in arguably, one of the greatest coaches of all time, probably top three. Some would say one. Yes? Oh, Phil Jackson? Yeah, that's a good conversation. Eric's certainly an all-time great. Are we building a Mount Rushmore for this? And then Tyron Lou and Frank Vogel are the other coaches LeBron James won a championship with.
Starting point is 01:31:21 Yeah, that's a loss, LeBron. All right. 12-17 sports talk. No, but I mean, he won a spolster out. That was not a... No, that is stupid. Yeah. That was very dumb.
Starting point is 01:31:29 Not good. I never said the guy was perfect. No. All right. 713-21-2-5-7-90. 7-1-3-1-2-5-70. This chief stadium, you know who's losing her mind over this? Hannah, she's like, damn, this is good.
Starting point is 01:31:44 I thought you were talking about, what's her name, Hunt? Oh, no. She's not losing her mind. She's just counting on her. She's very happy. She's very pleased. $3 billion. in Kansas.
Starting point is 01:31:57 Apparently it's a sketchy part of that metro area there. But you can change things around. I mean, hell, they may be moving to Gary Indiana. Gary Indiana is one of the most crime-ridden cities in America. The Chicago Bears are like, I don't care. 16 and Kirby's not the safest place in the town. Oh, God, no. That's why they shouldn't be building a new facility.
Starting point is 01:32:13 They don't want to refurbish I'm okay with, but build a new one. Which, by the way, is the machos still over there? No. Because they tore down the one on West Time. I know. I don't think it's gone. They're all gone? Let me ask you.
Starting point is 01:32:24 What about the Northside one? What about the Remy Rands? Is that still there? I don't know. Is the Machos is gone on Northside too? I'll check. I'll check. 45 and Tidwell?
Starting point is 01:32:33 I'll check the website. 1218 on Sports Talk 790. 713-1-2-125. 790. Big Astro News. Ross did not mention news in noon. We'll come back with that. You know, play the musical tribute.
Starting point is 01:32:44 You're such a fraud. To our next topic next on 790. 2-0 to Caratini. And that's a ground ball Just at the left of second charging Pena. He gloves straightens up, throws the first side, retired. One, two, three inning for Nate Pearson in his Astros debut, and we go to the ninth inning in Minnesota.
Starting point is 01:33:18 Three two. Strike three on the inside corner, and Williams goes down looking. Burned him with a fastball at 97, and the side is retired. Nate Pearson retires six of the seven he faces, strikes out two of them. Big right-handed pitcher Pearson. There's a ground ball. That's an easy one for Altuve on a really high candy hop. And he gets Pasquitino for the third out.
Starting point is 01:34:02 So six in a row retired by Pearson after the leadoff single last inning. And he's worked two innings. And the Astros lead nine to five as we go to the eighth inning. All right, Ross, I got a question for you. And I'm not going to look it up. I want to see if you know the definition of it because I don't. But I've heard it before. What exactly is a candy hop?
Starting point is 01:34:23 Candy hop in what constant? Context. Steve Spark just said it. I didn't even hear it. That's just because... A candy hop? It's like a short hop? I would define... We're going to look this up alive.
Starting point is 01:34:38 You're going to go with this? Is that what you're going to go with your answer of? Let me hear the context again. Was it the last one? Play the last huddle again. Big right-handed pitcher Pearson. There's a ground ball. That's an easy one for Altovae on a really high candy hop. And he gets Paspartino for the third. out. So six in a row retired
Starting point is 01:34:57 by Pearson after the lead-off single last inning. And he's worked two innings, and the Astros lead nine to five as we go to the eighth inning. Thank you, Steve. I would say, yeah, a high hop right into the glove. Easy to handle. One hopper? I would go with candy hop being a piece of candy.
Starting point is 01:35:17 Like, you know, like a piece of cake would be to something's easy. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Candy, a hop's right in, one big hop right in the glove. It's like easy like Sunday morning. Like a one hopper. Yeah, okay. I go with that. Okay. Nate Pearson, we're going to miss you.
Starting point is 01:35:31 Okay. Let me ask you this, do you think the Royals, because they're kind of a miserly team, they fly him first class? It's like two-hour flight. What do you think they're going to put him on Frontier? No, because you could put him on a regional jet. You can make him pay for his own bag?
Starting point is 01:35:45 You know, not every regional jet has first class. I'm going to put him on a Greyhound. No, I wouldn't think so. I'm sure he's flying first class. I think he probably is, too. I don't think the Royals are going to do him like that. Basic economy. Welcome to the Royals. Yeah, I'm not familiar with a, that sounds more like, uh, yeah, back of the day.
Starting point is 01:36:06 Back of the day. Yeah, Nap, laude you away with a candy hop. I like, for the Cleveland spiders. That's why I love Steve Sparks, putting it in a little candy, old candy hop. You don't hear Joe Buck saying candy hop. No, you don't. You got Steve Sparks saying candy hop. I got a lot of little things I want to get to on the radio show today.
Starting point is 01:36:23 Okay. I was going to leave this segment wide open for Nate Pearson calls. We did have one, remember? We did have one Nate Pearson call today on the show. Yes, we did. What was his favorite Nate Pearson highlight? I believe throwing the ball away when he was trying to defend his position. Hmm.
Starting point is 01:36:42 I'm going to give you, in the next segment of this show, two anecdotal things I just found on the World Wide Web. One, we have to honor the vocalist who just recently passed away, who sang one of the five greatest theme songs in television history. Okay. That's number one. Number two, I have some hopeful news about why we may not get a lockout in baseball long term next season. Okay.
Starting point is 01:37:15 So how about that? So you're coming to my side. Hopefully it will be okay. But the reason why I'm giving you here, we were going to bet 61 and a half games. We just never made the terms of the bag. We're not going to make the bet. Oh, you're out? No, I just want, I'm tired of making bets.
Starting point is 01:37:28 You were on a good run, but now you're kind of on a bad run, unless you find out Joe Mixing got his foot shot. By the way, which you were tweeting about. I was and people are like, yeah, man, you got some, you got, I'm on your side of this. Jonathan, do not worry, my friend. I'm not saying you and I are right about this. It's not going to be a matter of if we find out. It's going to be when we find out. Okay.
Starting point is 01:37:51 When Nick Casario said nothing, did he said the term nefarious? Is that what he went with? He said nothing irresponsible. He lied to you. He 100% lied to you. Okay. because even if it was something, if he had had a,
Starting point is 01:38:10 what do you, massive foot, what if he broke his foot? Mm-hmm. I mean, that happens with athletes all the time. Yeah. So if it's something that wasn't irresponsible,
Starting point is 01:38:23 then just tell the world. They're hiding something. So Casario lied to you, Houston. I hope you okay with that. Hope you're okay with your general manager's lying to you. Oh, you think it was Cal shot him in the foot? They were cleaning their guns
Starting point is 01:38:36 After a day of the range Was Cal at the scene of when Joe Mixon hurt himself? I will say no on that. Were they hunting? No, because he only plays video games. And then Joe shot himself from the foot. Oh no, I bet you Calhunts.
Starting point is 01:38:50 I bet you Calhunts. Yeah. Takes his boys out there. Drinking a bunch of light beers. Is he drinking too much noise in the deer stand? Is he drinking PBR light? He's the guy in the deer stand making a bunch of noise. He's like, well, shut up. He's like giggling and laughing and you're like, dude, we're trying to catch deer out.
Starting point is 01:39:07 We're trying to shoot deer out here. And see, Hannah is... And you're rustling around making a bunch of noise. And Hannah insists on him drinking light beer. So before he had to take a bunch of photos of all the foodie ate. He was given carrots, celery, and light beer. No, he's crackling Snickers wrappers and he's like, he brought a whoopee cushion. And you're like, dude, we gotta be quiet out here.
Starting point is 01:39:27 And he brought a nudie movie to put on the DVD player. You really got yourself with that one. Nobody calls them nudie movies anymore. You ever notice that? You all just go straight to porn. Nudy mag. Nudy mag. Have you ever heard that term, Jonathan?
Starting point is 01:39:47 Nudy mag. Looks like a no. He's texting his girl. He's given the Russell Whisper, bro, what? He's like, man, I am busy talking to my girl. What do you all need for me? Just hit your breaks. You would ask me about nudie bag, nudie mags?
Starting point is 01:40:03 I'm like, we're a minute behind break. All right, all right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. We're coming back with one of the greatest theme songs of television history. The man who sang that song is no longer with us. May he rest?
Starting point is 01:40:14 And optimism for maybe they're not being a long lockout in baseball. 1231 on Sports Talk 790. From Television City in Hollywood. Jim Gilstrap passing away Saturday at the age of 79, RIP to him. Background singer for a lot of Motown R&B soul singers, including Aretha Franklin over time. But clearly his most famous work was the last 32nd you just heard. What was his name
Starting point is 01:41:22 again? Jim Gilstrap. Jim Gilstrap. That's a good name. 79 years old. Jim Gilstrip. Maybe it's Gilstrip. Maybe it is. I don't know. I think it's more. I'm making that up. All right. Would you like a little bit of optimism on why we might not have a super long lockout? He had a solo hit
Starting point is 01:41:40 Swing Your Daddy. 1975. Does that sound familiar? No, it is not. Okay. All right. So there is language in the Major League Baseball National Media Deal that would push the current media rights deal that the owners have with the Major League Television Partners that would give the television partners an additional year should a certain threshold of games be missed. Hmm. Which means you don't get to negotiate.
Starting point is 01:42:18 a new deal if you have to push everything back a year. And as we know, in college athletics, in the NBA, television, NFL, television deals need to be constantly freshened and updated Ross because these TV networks continue to somehow, some way, find big money to pay these networks, all of them. Now, if there really is a situation, oh, look at our buddy L.J. from New Zealand's calling Let's go. All right.
Starting point is 01:42:50 Let's go ahead, LJ. I get back from New Zealand, though, I think. Maybe he's still there. Maybe he's in Alvin. You never know. You know the 30 owners knew this. Mm-hmm. When the commissioner said, has told them,
Starting point is 01:43:03 if you're really going to lock out the baseball in December, and you're really going to sit this out, not only are you going to lose ticket sales, you're going to lose revenues, but you're also going to lose a year of your major league baseball television rights deals. Will that be enough to sway them to maybe miss a part of the season to get into a as you suggested enough to play a 60 game 90 game schedule.
Starting point is 01:43:25 Nobody knows the answer to that question. But it's interesting because television makes the world go round. The NFL has got years left in all their TV deals and they're always looking to renegotiate. Of course they are. The NBA's mega billion dollar deal pissed the NFL off. It said we are five times more popular than the NBA. let's talk.
Starting point is 01:43:50 I have a stupid question, though. Please. How much longer can everything go up and up and up and up and up and up and up to where like ESPN is laying everyone off so they can pay for all these rights fees that they're doing? I mean, you get in these bidding wars that apparently NBC, Peacock is losing hemorrhaging money. Correct. Over this NBA deal. I mean, NBC and Universal, they can take hits. I guess it depends on its stockholders and its CEO, right?
Starting point is 01:44:19 Yeah. This says Peacock posted a deficit of $432 million in the first quarter of 26 after a $552 million loss in quarter four of 2025. So since the NBA is going to Peacock, they've lost almost a billion dollars. This says Comcast, NBC Universal. It's all one, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a ridiculous conglomerate, but I digress. It says Peacock has lost $11 billion since it's not.
Starting point is 01:44:49 Which makes you think why is NBC in the business of doing that? How does this keep happening? How do they keep writing checks and paying for Sunday night football and paying for Sunday night baseball? Yeah, if NBC has basically bought enough media rights to sports franchises that they're going to be able to broadcast sports 52 Sundays a year between the NFL, baseball and basketball. Now, for us as sports consoors, we love that. I mean, the Dodgers Yankees game was on Sunday night baseball. Rossi, I watched some of it. Now, there wasn't anything else going on.
Starting point is 01:45:35 There was no World Cup that week because the World Cup had completed. The Astros were done. And it was two sexy franchises that were our potential World Series contenders. So I watch a few innings of it. But few innings, that doesn't move the needle for them because I don't remember any of the sponsors in the show. I haven't bought anything. I wouldn't buy sponsors off shows, but, you know, I don't remember anything on it. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 01:46:00 They need me, if Peacock's going to turn around, they need me to buy every product that they try to sell. They need me to pay the more money that it would cost for me to be a Peacock subscriber. I guess it's the number of thing they're going to have to try to do, raise their rates. Comcast stock is almost a third from five years ago. Ooh. It was trading at 58 bucks. Now it's trading at 24. Yikes.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Yikes. Hmm. Okay, so let's do this. I'm scared now. Let's say we're having the Matt and Ross show at 1241 on July 22nd, 2016. We were probably having the same conversation. This is when media rights were starting to really skyrocket. This is when we were starting to see games occasionally shown on Amazon or occasionally shown on Netflix.
Starting point is 01:46:50 SEC was still on CBS, but there were rumors that ESPN was going to write at the SEC a blank check. and they did. Rossi, we're watching these Christmas Day games Netflix paying billions, not billions,
Starting point is 01:47:06 tens of millions of dollars for two mundane regular season NFL games. That's crazy. I mean, they must be, obviously they make money on the advertising
Starting point is 01:47:14 and they have it there so that they can advertise their other shows and programming. So they can put on, hey, this is on NBC. Hey, this is on Peacock. Hey, catch this movie.
Starting point is 01:47:23 Hey, catch this show. You asked me a question I don't have an answer to, and I guess we have to get a sports business person. Yeah. But you're right. Now, remember, Sports Center, ESPN in the last 48 hours laid off about six to eight on air talent. Mm-hmm. They all made nice money. Probably a bunch of other people.
Starting point is 01:47:43 But they're a bunch. But at the day, they just re-upped Pat McAfee to $60 million. Yeah. They just gave Tim Tebow a new deal. Uh-huh. They're really, when you look at... lay off, when you tell Linda Cone to retire, when you lay off Tom Pelosarro,
Starting point is 01:47:58 when you lay off Carl Ravich, that's not real bleeding. Let me tell you what real bleeding is. I can tell you what real bleeding is. That's not it. Disney's had three rounds. It's not only just ESPN. It's Disney.
Starting point is 01:48:13 Here's the New York Post headline. Bloodbath at Disney. As mass layoffs hit. Pixar, National Geographic, ESPN, and more at the Walt Disney Company. I don't know. I'm just talking out loud. Just thinking about this long term. You know what? It's us in a media business?
Starting point is 01:48:32 I don't want you to worry a pretty little head on that. Thank you, Matt. Just keep being here with me every day, 10 to 2. I'm trying. 7-1-3-212. That's my plan. All right, we're going to talk to LJ, and we're going to check in with Gordy as well. All in the next segment, Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Starting point is 01:48:46 This is Sports Talk 790. Sweet! From somebody named Flex. I don't want them to trade Yordon, but suggesting it is no different from just dressing them to trade Pena or Isok Paredes? I like that face you made, Jonathan. Thank you. If you're willing to trade one of the three, you should be willing to
Starting point is 01:49:15 trade all of them. You don't see the difference. This is why I try not to argue online. You don't see the difference of trading ESOC Paredes, a, I don't know, 75760 OPS, solid third baseman with one year of team control. Or Jeremy Pena, gold glove caliber, all-star, caliber shortstop, but also with one year of team control and going to be looking for a payday over literally the best hitter in baseball right now, leading the American League in average
Starting point is 01:49:48 slugging and OPS, does play some outfield, is the chalk favorite for the MVP, and you don't have to worry about him hitting arbitration and getting some mammoth deal because he's under your control for two more years. I'm reading, so you're tweeting me that's the same as trading Pena or Isok Paredes? Who's saying that? Our guy Flex. Is he mad at us still?
Starting point is 01:50:15 Your microphone's off. Oh, is he mad at us still? I don't think he's mad, but he's saying, if you're willing to trade one of the three, Paratus, Pena, and Yorta, he's putting them all in one bucket. If you're willing to trade one, you should be willing to trade them all. Hey, is that Adam Wuxer in there? Yeah, he's coming to do it one of a clime. He's got a nice shirt on.
Starting point is 01:50:31 Yeah. Is it an Astro shirt? He usually wears Astros shirt. No, look at his shirt. I can't say what it is. Oh, it's 790. Good for him. 790 of the A.m.
Starting point is 01:50:39 down. You guys are twins. We're wearing the same shirt. All right. Let's talk to Gordy. Let's talk to Gordy real quick. Gordy is joining us from Tampa at the SEC Media. Gordy, you wearing your Sports Talk 790 shirt as well?
Starting point is 01:50:49 I'm wearing an I heart radio shirt. We're gone for the company. Yeah, good for you. Good for you. Hey, it was Aggie Media Day or at the SEC, Agie Talk Day. anything anecdotal from the head coach and or players that are representing the Texas A&M University? Just actually, just a few minutes ago, recorded an interview with Damien Sanford, the lineback for Texas A&M, who I'm a little surprised they brought him. He's a guy that was named a team captain before the Maroon and White game, and I know you didn't watch the Marooner White game, but he got hurt in that game, got carted off.
Starting point is 01:51:26 Lower leg injury that was, they said pretty serious. and we couldn't really get a timeline on, you know, how long is he going to be out? When's he going to be back? And I think Mike Elko said the other night when he was in Houston that he said, yeah, he's going to be back at some point in the season, middle of the season, I think he said. So it's a little awkward kind of asking about that because he kind of danced around it. But, you know, a kid that went to Katie, I forget, one of the Katie schools, is Houston native. And it was cool chatting with him.
Starting point is 01:51:53 He's a kid that, you know, when he's healthy, he's one of the best linebackers, you know, at A&M and in the SEC. Cool to chat with him, but, yeah, raise expectations for Mike Alcoe and company coming off the season. You think about how last season went guys. I mean, they start 11 and 0. They are controlling the SEC. They're sitting at the top of the standings. Everybody's singing their praises. And then they lose their last two games.
Starting point is 01:52:15 They lose to Texas. That keeps them out of Atlanta and playing for an SEC championship. And then a home playoff game, they don't score a touchdown and lose to Miami. And unfortunately, those two games have left a lot of sour taste in people's mouths. And people forget that they were 11 and 0. and one of the best teams of college football to start last year. Now, I was listening to you guys this morning coming to work, and you had said, you know, not every quarterback gets better.
Starting point is 01:52:37 And I'm not saying that you insinuated that Marcel Reed was going to get worse. But you did bring it up. So let me ask you this. If Marcel Reed takes a downturn, are you worried about the competition? Are you worried about you not seeing the natural progression in his game? Why did you bring that up in conversation today? I'm just not a fan of what they did at OC.
Starting point is 01:52:58 I mean, everybody remembers they went out and got, when Mike Elko got the job, they went and got one of the hot young names. I was Colin Klein, right? Former Houston Texan quarterback, by the way. But, you know, young offensive mind was a quarterback to Kansas State, and everybody was excited about him. And he brought a great offense to A&M. We saw that the last couple years.
Starting point is 01:53:19 But when he left to go be the head coach at Kansas State, he just promoted from within. Holman Wiggins, who was on the staff already, a guy who was. Hold on Wiggins. Yeah, he was a one-time, you know, wide-receiver coach at Alabama when they had all this great wide receiver. So, you know, it seems to be a pretty good football mind, but, you know, this is first time he's going to be OC play caller, and I just wonder, is this a mistake? He's 46 years old, mostly been a wide receiver's coach's whole career, so I don't know.
Starting point is 01:53:49 I'm not a fan of that hiring because of that, I say, what if A&M's offense takes a step back? What if Marcel Reed doesn't mature as a passerer? We're going to find out. I mean, look, they added Isaiah Horton, who's a really good receiver last year at Alabama, comes in through the portal. Mario Craver, obviously, was awesome last year. He's going to be one of their go-to guys, Terry Bussie, Ashton Bethel-Roman. They've recruited well there.
Starting point is 01:54:11 They have productive guys. I'm a little worried about the offensive line. Four new transfers on that offensive line. I just wonder how much does that hurt them, and they take a step backward offensively. But aren't we seeing that with every major school? I mean, how many teams are going through massive? I mean, we're seeing it in college basketball. I can't be surprised that they're not the only team in the conference
Starting point is 01:54:31 or for that matter in college football that's going through massive shifts in the offensive line. Hell, the Cougars the last few years have made major changes too. It feels like it's a very replaceable position that you can spend your NIM money. You can spend your money that you're spending on, and you can constantly move in and out of those positions. See, I don't know. I mean, continuity is big. Look, the rumors they spent a million dollars on Mark Nebu, the center, to bring him back.
Starting point is 01:54:54 I mean, that is crazy on a, on a, on a, center, but he's the only returning starter. And look, they went out guys that got guys that have experience. What can Formby was at Alabama. Tyree Adams and Cohen Eccles were at LSU. So these are guys who played at other SEC programs, but, you know,
Starting point is 01:55:10 like Oklahoma was here the other day. Oklahoma brings back all five starting offensive linemen. In fact, one of the returning starters is going to be a backup now because they brought in a piece through the portal who's better than the guy who was playing. But, you know, at least four returning starting alignment. So it's not every school is having a retool
Starting point is 01:55:26 the old line every off season, but it's a point of question for A&M. And, you know, we like Rubin-Owins as a running back. We like, you know, Jamarion Morrow and those pieces back there. It's just, if they struggle at all on that offensive line, it could spell trouble. We were kind of talking about this earlier, Gordy.
Starting point is 01:55:42 What do you think of Mike Elko overall? Because obviously it was an underwhelming hire when it was made. Then you had the first season, 8 and 5, lost the Las Vegas Bowl, and there were a lot of people, like, already on the bandwagon to fire the guy, Then he wins the games that he did early on, didn't end the season they wanted to,
Starting point is 01:56:01 and then he gets an extension. So he goes from like being, this guy needs to be fired to already getting an extension over there at Texas A&M. But overall, what do you think of him? I think you're going with the outsider perspective. Go ask any Aggie. They love the guy. I mean, you know, look, eight and five in year one was way better than anything. Jimbo had done the few years prior.
Starting point is 01:56:21 And then, you know, five and three in the SEC in year one. And then last year to go 11 and two. Yeah, I know those last two games. stunk, but still, he's 12 and 4 in the SEC the last two years. I don't know many other coaches. Kirby Smart, maybe Kalyn DeBore. Like, I don't know who's done better than that the last couple years. So, yeah, they love him.
Starting point is 01:56:40 You know, I am of the old school mentality of when a coach has a great second year and his agent says, hey, time for a raise, I'm of the mindset of you go, hey, no, your guy is earning his paycheck. He's doing a great job. I'm not a fan of this. Every time a coach has a year that was better than expected, let's instantly run to the table and go give him a contract extension. I just think it's so stupid because then what happens to the next year he sucks.
Starting point is 01:57:02 Guess what? You just locked yourself in long term to a guy that you committed even more money in years to. And that's how we get to these stupid huge buyouts. But no, talk to anybody at College Station. They absolutely love where they are with Mike Elko. All right. Anything else going on there besides Aggie Talk? John Sumroll, the new head coach of Florida, is right across from us doing a hit on CBS Sports.
Starting point is 01:57:24 And he was the rock star of the day. And I knew that. I mean, this is a guy that was, you know, former linebacker in Kentucky, was a D.C. at Kentucky a few years back. Got his first job as a head coach at Troy, elevated Troy, had two awesome years there. Then went to Tulane, followed Willie Fritz there at Tulane, had two great years at Tulane. And now he's an SEC head coach of Florida. And everybody says, I mean, this guy is a rock star.
Starting point is 01:57:46 He's got a top ten recruiting class right now in Florida. They're racking up recruit after recruit after recruit. He's got to go prove it X's and O's-wise on the football field. But people are super excited about what John. summer on the Florida Gators are going to do. All right. Thank you, Gordy. And tomorrow it's UT Day, right? And LSU. No, when is LSU Day?
Starting point is 01:58:03 Both, both them tomorrow. Oh, you're me a Kinn to candy store. Sark and Kiffin. Let's get them up there together. And making an arm wrestling competition. Put them on the show together tomorrow on 790. That'd be great. That'd be a huge get for you.
Starting point is 01:58:17 I actually did get Kailen to board today. That was a surprise. The Bama guy likes me. But, no, I was already told by our LSU guys. They said, we will get you. every LSU player, Lane is not doing any extra media. I told that to the TV people, the radio stations, everybody. But what if he goes on KLSU? Will you be pissed off?
Starting point is 01:58:34 He will not. I can guarantee Lane is not doing anything outside of his podium stuff tomorrow. Well, we should get all the LSU players and all the Texas players and coaches. We are as your home for the Tigers and the Horns are here in the IHard Media family. This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Let's go to the phones. Man at Ross. 9790, 713, 2,1, 2, 1, 5, 790. All right, on the line, LJ's first. Daryl says, finally agrees with Matt.
Starting point is 01:59:10 Does this have been a lifelong disagreement with me about someone, Daryl? I feel like I've got some decent takes. Now, you're not going to agree with me on everything, but it says finally agrees with me. I'm curious, but our man, LJ, who's paying ridiculous amounts of long-distance airtime to talk to us here on the show. LJ, first of all, where are you calling from us? Where are you calling from? Number two, what time is it? It's 606 in the morning. I'm calling from New Zealand.
Starting point is 01:59:39 And I got a plan, this thing called, they don't sponsor, Charles, so let's call them RELO. Yes. I just pay six U.S. dollars a month, and I got a number. And the main reason I keep this number is I was like, man, I just got this dude, Jonathan, to realize that I am calling from New Zealand. Oh, there you go. I got to get a new one.
Starting point is 02:00:00 I got to start all over. But, no, I mean, I've been 15 years. I was in New Zealand when I called you when you was at the Super Bowl. I know. I just was curious. Yeah, I was just curious if you'd come back. So you are explaining the audience again. You live in New Zealand because you work there or you like it there or there's a girl there.
Starting point is 02:00:17 What's exactly the reason? All the above. All right. And then you can add my kids. I've been here. I've got my own stuff that I've been here. Yeah, and Yeah, but my heart
Starting point is 02:00:32 I was born and raised in Houston. You're Mr. Texas, I'm Mr. Houston. I know, I know. That's why you and I are such good friends because we share the same vibe. L.J., you know he's not Mr. Texas. Yeah, I am. Yeah, I am.
Starting point is 02:00:43 Yeah, I got to say that. But hey, what I'm saying is if he can say that, I definitely can say Mr. Houston because I can definitely back it up. And then I'm missing the I heart. You know, if it wasn't for our heart, you know, I've been missing the Aheart since I got here.
Starting point is 02:00:56 And, you know, it used to be listening to my man are you guys for sure but E&D you know and that's what really kept a long long time and then
Starting point is 02:01:09 when you guys came back so all right but the main thing I call you know candy hop I don't know what candy hop was but definitely check out what candy flipping is but
Starting point is 02:01:20 speaking about the Astros can I look up what candy flipping is on an office computer or darn not need to do that? Like, I'm going to look at it right now. It's a street term for the simultaneous recreational use of LSD and MDMA. This dangerous polysubstance practice amplifies the stimulant
Starting point is 02:01:45 and hallucinogenic effects of both drugs carrying severe risks such as serotonin syndrome, overheating panic attacks, and cardiovascular failure. I'll try to 2 o'clock today, LJ, thank you. You should do it for believe it or not. That's for Vegas, bro. That's for Vegas. Before you go to the Syrac Show in Vegas.
Starting point is 02:02:08 Yeah. All forks. So the thing about Astros, you know, I watch it here, and sometimes I get the alerts on my watch. This is the year where I call it, like, giving up the booty quick. They have given up to lead in the first inning or early, like, more games than I've ever seen. my life. I've been watching the Astros all my life and they've been giving up the lead so early. And, you know, these people,
Starting point is 02:02:33 and the thing about I was calling is for two things. Like the Yoran trades and these people talking about the KD trades. Like, they really can set their own ass up. Like, because the main thing is, like, why was you trade with two best players? Like, the Rock has been trying to get a player like KD forever. The Astros, if you can't, if you trade away your turn,
Starting point is 02:02:57 you would be hoping to get somebody to play like him. Like, that don't make no sense to me. And then, like, y'all's the Aggies, like, only thing I want to say to all the Aggie people is, is just ACEs. Aces. You just said it.
Starting point is 02:03:13 Yeah. Aces? Like the monitors? As we're saying, thank you very much of the phone call. I don't get it. It's fine. I mean, I didn't want his bill to run out. Okay.
Starting point is 02:03:26 Like the Las Vegas is? Yeah. He loves Las Vegas. Yeah. He watches everything in Las Vegas. He's going to love the Las Vegas Jackson of the NBA. I just don't like that name. All right.
Starting point is 02:03:39 You know what? Give him a better one. Okay. If you're so finicky, I like the 21s. You hate that. The Sands. The Sands? S-N-D-S?
Starting point is 02:03:50 The Desert Inns. The camels? The mirages. You know what the... I thought of something. I'll tell you all fair. The Venetians. I was going to say, if you name them the camels,
Starting point is 02:04:02 you could not name the Trilitters an offshoot of that name. All right. I know it's going to involve toes. I didn't say that. You thought of it. How about the Las Vegas and Bellagios? How about the Royal Flush?
Starting point is 02:04:18 That's not bad. How about the dealers? Okay. All right. Daryl says he finally agrees with me. What did I say today? that would require Darrell calling the show to say
Starting point is 02:04:30 you finally agree with me on something. I didn't realize we had disagreements in the past. Let's find out right now. Daryl's with us at 111.7.9. Daryl, good afternoon. Good afternoon, Matt. Good afternoon, Ross. In context, it wasn't about your
Starting point is 02:04:46 sports takes at all. Your sports takes. I agree with most of your sports takes. I mean, you're a seasoned veteran. You understand sports very well. Thank you. And so does Ross. Thank you. So it's not the sports takes.
Starting point is 02:04:59 It's just your, outside of that, just your life, such as the music you listen to. Yeah, I love it. The way you dress. No, what are you talking about? Food. It's delicious. You're Mr. McRibb.
Starting point is 02:05:12 Come on. Come on. Elton John and Barry Manilow. Oh, I'm sorry. Elton John who sold 400 million albums. Yeah, he sucks. Go ahead. Get him, Daryl.
Starting point is 02:05:22 Well, you can't argue. He'd rather have the McRib over Brisket. all you need to know. That is true. Continue on. Exactly. That's what I'm going to wait. But you finally said something, I totally agree with it.
Starting point is 02:05:34 You said airplane was the funniest movie of all time. Yes, sir, it is. Thank you. Most certainly. Yeah. So, you know, I finally found something so I think it would be cool if we hung out and had a beer and discussed airplanes. I'm very busy. But I appreciate the off.
Starting point is 02:05:49 No, no. Yeah, yeah. Darry, you're busy too. I'm sorry, Darrell, what are you do for living my ass? Write that down for your Friday, sorry. I'm talking to Darrell. Darrell, what do you do for a living? May I ask? Oh, yes, sir. I'm a senior machinist and the medical dog.
Starting point is 02:06:04 Oh, damn, that's a good job. You know what? Let's go have a drink and you pay. We go great on that. We'll be doing just fine. All right. I can do that. No problem. Perfect. Thank you, very. All right. L.J.'s calling us on that one. Good God. Why don't we put you back on there? He can't say that one. He didn't realize he was on air. Oh, I put him back on there. Oh, well. All right.
Starting point is 02:06:25 Oh, the pirates are up on top of the Yankees. That's good for us. Wall card getting just a smit closer to sports RV. It's 2-0-0 Pirates. Good news. For Pete's sake. That was a candy corn pitch right there. Candy hop?
Starting point is 02:06:48 Candy hop pitch. Oh, my God. By the way, we need a ruling on a questionable jersey. sponsor. Hold on. Was it yesterday or today that you said you were always going to be on clock the whole show? Yeah, it was yesterday.
Starting point is 02:07:07 You haven't chimed in two hours. Shut your mom-ass up. I was giving you some grace. Yeah, he's trying to help you out. I don't think there was any grace at all. Shut up. Willie and friends would love you, Jonathan. Back.
Starting point is 02:07:22 Geez. No, I'm just, he just came. You're feisty today. He came in two hours ago. He told you. You told Daryl, you shut his bum ass up, basically. But he's going to buy me a drink. He's actually congratulating you.
Starting point is 02:07:33 On my airplane take, of course. It's a great thing. Most of your takes are horrible. They don't have the day off right. He got cut off, you know. Your sports takes are mostly fine, and your pop culture takes are, and food takes are bad.
Starting point is 02:07:45 More with Mr. Texas and Ross next at 114 on Sports Talk 790. Our visit with Brian Booker, coming up at about 10 minutes from now. Ross, a quick ruling. Now, advertising makes the roll go round. And if not for our advertisers, we aren't operating as a company. We want to thank everybody that's been involved. That includes uptown appliance.
Starting point is 02:08:05 You'll be talking about on the curb coming up in a minute. Centergenics, big city wings, uptown appliance, you're pair mentioned, Shell, Federal Corny. You mean, you've heard all of our favorites. Yes. And we thank them tremendously for their support. And please support them if you want to support the show. That's all we ask. You want to help us out support our sponsors who are great.
Starting point is 02:08:22 Yeah. Now, sometimes we are given some strange ones. Like, I've done erectile dysfunction before. I've done the chews where you, you know, there's just some bizarre things. This one is a bizarre one for the Houston Dynamo. They have a back of Jersey partner now. Okay. Dude wipes.
Starting point is 02:08:46 Oh, okay. They've been spending a lot of money on stuff. And again, money makes the world go around. And if you want to call it the Matt Thomas Show of Ross, bought you by dude wipes. We'd be all for it. Wasn't Adam Clinton speaking for them for a while? No, he just bought them. So I didn't even know about dude wipes until he and I went to Dallas to cover a Rockets Mavericks playoff series many years ago.
Starting point is 02:09:05 And he's like, do not use the total paper. I'm like, why? He goes because I brought something. Yeah, he gets the Thai chili ones, right? I believe he gets the, uh, the, I was thrown off by that. I'm so happy. I threw you off. No, they have like mintal ones.
Starting point is 02:09:23 It's kind of, well, they have, they have peppermint. They've got fall breeze. and they've got garlic lime. And a prickly pear, I believe, are your favorites. Prickly pair. It's just interesting. I think puns can come into play on that pretty quick. Good for them?
Starting point is 02:09:44 Who's backing... It's got to be like Procter & Gamble or somebody owns dude wipes, right? One of the big corporations. I don't know. Okay. But their phrasing they're using for all of their advertising is... You know, I'm not going to even go say it. Okay.
Starting point is 02:10:01 Because it's a, it's a, it's a, it's too, it's a lawying for, we don't do loying for another show, but, apparently they're just dude products. Apparently they're on Shirk Tank. They're basically moist toilets for your rear end. Yeah. Which, somebody had to go to Shart Tank for that? Yeah, if you want to be cleaner and promote cleanliness among dudes. A lot of dirty dudes out there. Yeah, we work with Adam, Clanton.
Starting point is 02:10:26 Yeah. He's dirty as a Gits. That's the reason why he'd get his dude wipes. Oh, apparently. Are they still independent? Good for them. You know what? I want to support them, but I...
Starting point is 02:10:37 I've used one before. Okay? It's a little... Hmm, how do I put this? Yeah, this is weird conversation. I would assume that if you're used to it, it's not a big deal, but the first couple of times you use it, it... It takes them getting used to.
Starting point is 02:10:50 It's a little bit of a tingle. But they call them flushable wives, but you're still not supposed to flush them, right? Where are you going to put them wrong? That's what I'm saying. This is why it's weird. No, I believe you're supposed to flush them. You're still not supposed... A plumbers, I bet it was...
Starting point is 02:11:01 I bet why I can get a plumber to call in right now and say, do not flush the flushable wipes. I probably don't disagree with you. But again, I'm not, if I'm going to use the dut wipes, they're going in the toilet. Just saying. Well, you don't put diapers in the toilet. It's got the same stuff on it.
Starting point is 02:11:18 Well, how much of a mess are you making? Well, depends on what I had. How do you feel about bidetes? Once. I'm good. I was in Korea and Taiwan. It was quite nice. You just sit there.
Starting point is 02:11:38 You just sit there. Used to it. Again. It's a shocking feeling in that part of your body the first time, I'm assuming. Once you translate, yeah, what's going on? Make sure you push the right buttons. Oh, there's like a... There's a female setting and a male setting.
Starting point is 02:11:53 And the female setting is more of a what? More turbo or less turbo? Turbo. No, it's not turbo. Well, the water gushing would be of a certain speed, will it not? Anyways, I'm pro to beday. I was, I had no opinion until I went to Korea and it was on every toilet. Little known fact, probably of the 29 NBA cities I travel to, I have bideties probably in 20 of them.
Starting point is 02:12:28 Yeah, I think you should use them to promote your personal health and well-being. Okay, what I will do is next time I'm on the show, on the road during a break, I will go use a bidet and then report back to you how it felt. Don't need a report. I don't need a report from you. I don't need a Biday. I don't need MT's Biday report. Baday update on the Mets. Okay.
Starting point is 02:12:54 Willie on 7.90. Hi, Willie. Thank you. Famous, Willie. Hi. Hi. I'm not famous. Famous.
Starting point is 02:13:02 Thank you for taking a call. Sure. I'm an avid watcher of the Astros, and I'm one of these people that keep score. I know who strikes out. I know who hits the ball. And when you get to the end of the game, you'll say, So-and-so did this, so-and-so do that. And you just, you know, you go, oh, gosh.
Starting point is 02:13:21 But last night, this was the first thing, I believe, the double play about two-day. And I believe it was the eighth inning with the triple play. Triple play, yeah. Has he ever had a game before where he's done this? And thank God we were winning in the eighth inning. But had we been losing, that, that, that triple play would have been, oh, scrutinized a little bit more. And he's lost his patience in batting, and he's swinging right away again.
Starting point is 02:13:57 So I don't, I'm not condemning him. He doesn't mean to do it. But it's not helpful for the team. Well, I would hope not. I mean, any out is not helpful for the team. Well, I don't think, I don't think Jose Al-Tuvia went to the plate and the eighth inning going, man, this would be kind of cool to get into bouncing of five, four, three. I don't, he doesn't, he wants to get as many hits. as possible. First of all, he's chased in 3,000.
Starting point is 02:14:18 Second of all, he knows his team needs him to be successful. So he certainly didn't do it intentionally. What would, if you, if Willie, if Jose went and came into your house right now and said, hey, I'm headed to the ballpark, what do you want to tell me before I leave? What would you tell him? I'll tell you, I've got my rabbits foot out and praying for you. There you go. See, that's exactly what it is. Thank you, Willie, for the phone call. Yeah, one in doubt, get the good luck terms out.
Starting point is 02:14:43 Yeah. Switch seats. Change your shirt inside out. please come and sit on my bidet. Yeah. Go sit on the bidet. That's whatever's going to work. And maybe he's got a little extra bounce in his step because of that. Maybe he legs it out.
Starting point is 02:14:56 Legs what out. So he's not a part of a 5-4-3? Huh. That thing was a, that was a candy hop five-three, Rossi. Candy-hop. It was. It was a candy hopper, wasn't it? Yes.
Starting point is 02:15:11 Brian Bogus-Evick joins us in a moment here on Sports Talk 790. Yeah. Thomas show with Ross here on Sports Talk 790. We got believe it or not coming up. A lot of great prizes in the next segment right now. As soon as I get the signal that we are ready, which we are earlier in the show. We had Brian Bogus Evicon.
Starting point is 02:15:47 Just a great interview every week, given the player perspective on a number of different things, including Jeremy Pena, dealing with his injuries, Astros rotation. But started off talking about the up and down nature of the Astros. Since coming back from the All-Star break, you get swept by the Orioles, and you come back and win a couple against the Marlins.
Starting point is 02:16:04 Yeah, it's definitely gotten to the point to where you're going to have to show it before people really buy in because, you know, we've seen it for a start or two over the course of the first half. Yeah, the stuff works. I mean, there's no question that when he's throwing strikes and when he's commanding the zone and when he's working ahead of hitters, that he can get major league hitters out. The question is, does he have the ability to do it? it consistently on a start in and out basis. We haven't
Starting point is 02:16:35 seen it yet, but I do think there were some subtle differences yesterday that show maybe a little bit of maybe not just growth from him, but also the team understanding. You know, when we were down in the dugout with Joe is spotted before the game,
Starting point is 02:16:51 he was talking about in my start, what he expected from him. And I was just talking about some changes that they thought they could make in the second half and some adjustments just from learning him. And I think first and foremost, we saw the use of the split finger, change up, call it whatever you want. He used it more yesterday than in any start.
Starting point is 02:17:11 It was effective. It adds a different element of kind of front and back changing speeds versus just trying to get you to swing and miss at spin off of a fastball. And it was also more slider to set up the fastball versus fastball to set up the slider. Just kind of leaning into your strength. His slider is his best pitch. He threw it more than any of his other. pitches and it felt like the fastball was almost a secondary pitch once he could feel hitters
Starting point is 02:17:36 waiting back a little bit trying to recognize spin. So just those things, you know, not mechanical changes, not necessarily the stuff being different, but just different usage patterns, I think maybe can provide a little bit more confidence, which could hopefully lead to a little bit more consistency. Now, you look, you look at 140 Astro games a year, so it's hard to maybe go picture by picture. But is there a sign or something you see early in games that you know what you're going to see from Tatsui over the course of the night? and what you maybe see in the first or second inning? Yeah, if it looks like he's nibbling, right,
Starting point is 02:18:07 just trying to be too fine on the edges of the zone, that always leads to the high pitch count, it leads to the long inning, that leads to walk, it leads to, you know, usually the eventual big swing that scores a bunch of runs and puts up a crooked number. When he's in there and looks like he's comfortable throwing the ball more into the middle of the zone,
Starting point is 02:18:27 trusting his stuff to work against hitters, that's when he's usually set up for success. And even if it costs him a run or two throughout the course of an outing, those are the outings where he typically can eat up more innings and come out of it at the end of the outing and say, okay, on the whole, that was a good outing. Brian Bogus-Evick with us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross on Sports Talk 790. And I know the Baltimore series really deflated a lot of folks,
Starting point is 02:18:54 frankly deflated me, Brian. And not the two victories against the Marlins are going to change all that, But is this five-game stretch just been a little bit of a microcosm of what we've gone through this entire season? I mean, when you're thinking about, all right, now should the Astros start selling at the deadline, you sit and look at the standings, you're three back, it ain't great, you're still under 500, you're still trailing the wild card. How are the players adjusting to this knowing that the consistency is there? There are a slightly under 500 team, but yet no one in this division has pulled away, giving them an eighth and ninth life. at this point?
Starting point is 02:19:32 Yeah, you know, it's very different from a player standpoint versus a fan standpoint or even if you're a part of an organization in a front office or something where you're looking very big picture. Players are in the day to day. They really and truly, it sounds cliche, they don't care about anything other than what's right in front of them, getting ready for today, playing today, trying to win today. And if you win today, all is good. But, you know, going back to the Baltimore series, the thing that was, you know, most disappointing, you know, We've looked at the standings all throughout the year and judging against that, it's not that bad of a situation. But it's always, to me, you look at yourself, how are we playing?
Starting point is 02:20:10 And for the course of, you know, most of June and into early July, it was, you know, we're playing pretty good baseball. And we're getting there. We're getting to where we want to be. That series against Baltimore was concerning because it just wasn't good baseball. It was poor execution. It was a lot of walks again. So, you know, you're hoping that that's just a. blip on the radar and now moving into this Miami series.
Starting point is 02:20:33 It seems like it kind of was, which, you know, you can weather that. That happens. You have a bad series. You have a bad week, whatever. But as long as you can snap out of it quickly, then it's not too much to worry about. If the Astros are going to turn this around, of course, it's going to have to be with the help of the rotation. One turn through post-all-star break. How are you feeling about it overall?
Starting point is 02:20:53 You know, I was actually looking at some of these numbers this morning. Pretty good. But if you look at it, so one time through for everybody, they average just over five innings per start.
Starting point is 02:21:28 I think the thing that's a couple things that are that are most encouraging. Number one, we saw things from Spencer Arigetti and Tetsu Yi and I that you can point to and say, okay, that could lead to sustained success going forward. You know, some of the things that we've been wanting to see throwing more strikes, throwing the breaking balls in the zone. But also I think Renele Blanco looks great. He looked healthy. He looked like somebody that you can, you know, count on assuming he stays healthy.
Starting point is 02:21:55 And then the other thing you point to is that they did that one. time through and Hunter Brown still didn't have a good start. He still doesn't look like himself. You know, you need to get him right. You want to get him right. And I'm very confident that he's going to get right. So if the pieces around him are doing well and moving forward, he's going to turn it on at some point. And then I think you're in a pretty good spot. Brian Bogusevich with us here on Sports Talk 790. I'm curious your former player's perspective, Brian, on Jeremy Pena. And can you kind of just take us through a little bit what he's been through? because he's had these hamstring injuries
Starting point is 02:22:29 and then he's had a couple of cramps and he's missed some time also with the calf injury. What is, obviously, he feels like he's not 100%, but he's trying to do everything he can to be out there. What are the things that he is going through and putting himself through to continue to be out there?
Starting point is 02:22:46 Well, first of all, it's frustrating, right? You know, as much as we look at it from the outside and it's frustrating when, you know, a guy who's your maybe second best offensive player can't stay in the lineup And you're like, man, you know, we're just not clicking on all cylinders. It's so frustrating for the players. You know, he's doing work in the weight room, doing work in the training room,
Starting point is 02:23:08 trying to get through this. But the soft tissue injuries in a sport where you have to play every day, it's almost impossible to get 100% through and past them during the season. It really takes an offseason of giving them, you know, weeks and weeks of rest and weeks and weeks of rehab and strength building to get back. So it's just something that you have to try to manage. And it's a lot of trial and error. It's a lot of taking stock of how do you feel on a day-to-day basis,
Starting point is 02:23:37 trying to be honest with yourself and maybe, you know, letting the manager know when I'm not feeling great and I need a day off, even if it's, you know, contrary to your nature to just, you know, when you want to be out there and play every day. It's just, you know, it's a pain. It is a huge pain in the butt to deal with legs, soft, tissue injuries during the course of the season. We were half joking about the impact of a Nate Pearson trade to Kansas City, and that's obviously
Starting point is 02:24:02 to once again, like Lance McCuller's last week, open up some roster spots. So does this mean that they're just trying to settle in that bullpen for if a couple of guys still can't be starters, i.e. a Mike Burroughs that he comes back on the Major League roster and comes out of the bullpen. How do you shape up moving a low leverage reliever this time of year when everyone's running to their social media platforms to see what Astros players are coming to Houston as compared to leaving Houston. Yeah, it's just, you know, this time of year, you're, first of all, you've got a bunch of guys coming off of the injure list. So, so there's just a roster crunch. It's just a numbers game to a degree, right? You have to, you can only have 26 guys in the roster. You can only have 40 guys in the 40-man roster. So, so you've got to have, you know, make, make the most out of what you've got. And you've got to accommodate the guys coming.
Starting point is 02:24:53 back, you have to also keep open spots for potential trade. So if you're moving, we're less than two weeks of the trade deadline, you want to have the flexibility to add if the opportunity presents itself. So it's just kind of procedural things. And a lot of times it's the move or the moves before the actual move. But yeah, it's just kind of roster house cleaning up to this point. That again is Brian Boga-Cific with us every Wednesday, at 11 o'clock here on sports talk 790
Starting point is 02:25:26 Ross, what is today's edition of Believe it or Not? It's highly Googledable and related to what's happening in Kansas City. About bidetes? No, it's not about bidetes. Oh, we can do a bidet, believe it or not. Yeah. By the way, Turbo, not the applicable term, apparently,
Starting point is 02:25:41 what the kids are saying. It's more side-to-side-and-side. What? Yeah. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. We're playing for some outstanding prizes. It takes two correct answers to win on, believe it or not today. You'll win either John Cougar Mellon camp tickets,
Starting point is 02:25:55 Brian Adams tickets, or Big Three Basketball tickets. That's all available for you on Believe it or not. Really fast. GEO's got a question about BDES, and that's what we are on Biday Talk 790. Can't punch it up here. Let's try this really quick. Can you punch Gio for me?
Starting point is 02:26:18 It's French, by the way, Jonathan. B-I-D-E-T. Hi, G-O-C-E-T. Gio, can you hear us? I can hear you. Do you guys hear me? Go for you. You got about a minute. All right, quick questions. Generally just curious.
Starting point is 02:26:30 Ross, since you used one, let's say you're going on a bidet, right, and you just ate some taco, but I'm talking about supersized it, and, you know, you got the runs. Now, if you use the bidet, isn't it going to make a mess, man, or does it, is it like a smooth clean? You know what I mean? Yeah, you can turn it up higher. Now what I would do. Oh, so you can go turbo with it then. I guess.
Starting point is 02:26:51 Yeah. What I would do is I would wipe and then bidet and then wipe. So a bidet, wipe, bidet. It's like a bidet sandwich. Oh, you go, you go wipe, badee. Do a wipe, Gio, then bidet and then do another wipe. Okay, I got you. One last comment, Matt, you sparked me as a turbo guy if you were able to use a bidet. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 02:27:15 You guys have a good one, man. The word turbo doesn't use enough in sports or in life for that. matter. Five minutes left to go on the show. What should we do? We should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show. We simply call it Believe it or not, and here's how it works.
Starting point is 02:27:33 You call 7-1-3-21-2-5-790. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. We talked earlier today about the Chief's new stadium being $3 billion in Kansas City, Kansas. I'm going to give you a stadium and its cost at the time of construction, not inflation ingested. At the time.
Starting point is 02:27:51 of construction. If it's the truth, you'll hear this. You'll say this, I should say. Believe it. And if we made it up, you'll say this. Two believe it or not, center of all. We've mentioned this all week long. We got John Mellencamp tickets on August 6th at the Woodlands, July 29th for Brian Adams or Big 3 this weekend at TOTA Center. A yay, yay, let's play, believe it or not. Mike on 790, Mike, you ready to play, Believe it or not? Believe it. The Astrodome costs $60 million to make in 1965.

Starting point is 02:28:48 Believe it or not. Believe it. Believe it. Statement number two for the way in Madison Square Garden in 1879 costs $1 million. Believe it or not. Believe it. No, $300,000. That was a cheap price. That's a good deal.
Starting point is 02:29:08 Chris on 7 on a Chris, your favorite part of today's 10 to 2 radio show. You believe in once again that you are certainly not Mr. Texas. Let me tell you something, Chris. I hope you lose. Let's go, Chris. I will be so happy. I'm going to personally give you the answers, Chris. No, you know what?
Starting point is 02:29:24 Wembley Stadium, 750,000 British pounds in 1923. Believe it or not? No. You get nothing like it. I think Chris should get a prize. Love Mr. Texas. Richard on 790. Richard, you're ready to play, believe it or not?
Starting point is 02:29:47 Yes. Toyota Center, $235 million. back in 2003. Believe it or not? Believe it. Yes. Believe it. Statement number two for the win. SoFi Stadium, $5.5.5 billion in 2020.

Starting point is 02:30:21 Believe it or not? believe it. No, $1.9 billion. See, these are off. These are not just, not minutia-esque, I can tell you that. Loretta on 790, Loretta, what was your favorite part of today's 10-2 radio show? You? Original Yankee Stadium, $2.4 million back in 1922. Believe it or not? Not. That's a believe it, but I appreciate the nice words about me.
Starting point is 02:30:53 I don't think Loretta will listen to a minute of the show. but that's okay. John on 790. John, you're ready to play, believe it or not? Believe it. Fenway Park in 1912 in Boston cost $1.1 million. Believe it or not?
Starting point is 02:31:09 Believe it. $650,000. That's a nod. Seems like a good deal too. Paul on 790. You ready to play? Believe it or not. Believe it. Paul, I know you.
Starting point is 02:31:24 He's not clicked on. Paul. Oh, let me try it again. Paul, you ready to play Believe it or not? Believe it. All right. Lambeau Field, 1957, Green Bay, Wisconsin, $2.2.2 million. Believe it or next?
Starting point is 02:31:39 Not. 960,000. Congratulations. That seems like a good deal, too. For 1957, that's great. The city was very basic back in the day. And probably the land cheaper over there. Yeah, next to what are you going to do? All right.
Starting point is 02:31:53 Up next, it is Clayton. It is Waxler. They're on location. where they are in approximately three and a half minutes. They call themselves the team. Ross has Astros on deck at six. The Wexler and Clan duo do not.
Starting point is 02:32:07 This is Sports Talk 790.
