Starting point is 00:00:01 Matt Thomas, Ross v. Riel. This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. 10-01 in H-Town. Good morning, and welcome to a Wednesday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross. This is Sports Talk 790. Bondo is right, he has it. Underhands the second for one, paying the first. That's two. Just what the doctor ordered for Fraber Valdez and the Astros of 463, and the side is retired. Phillies have stranded seven tonight and after five and a half Astros nothing, Philly's nothing three two and that's driven out toward right center field and hit pretty well long run for Rojas looking up
Starting point is 00:01:03 See you later second home run of the season for Hummel and the second home run is the ball game Cooper Hummel's home run in the eighth inning the difference tonight as the Astros defeat the Philadelphia Phillies one to nothing the Astros did not have a hit until the sixth inning. They get the biggest hit of all to take the first game of this three-game series. Astros victorious
Starting point is 00:01:52 in 10 of their last 13. Defaming of America's newest hero, Cooper Hummel. There will be another bit celebratory conversation as your Astros knocked off the Phillies. Justin is I was telling you yesterday, Matt.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Cooper Hummel's heating up. Turn us up! This song, In the classic category of, is it Pat Benatar or Joan Jett? And the answer is seen none of the above. Why do I do that to myself? I don't know, Matt. Because you're sexist, you pig?
Starting point is 00:02:41 Patty Smith. Not familiar. This is a banger. I mean, I know this song. You like it? I like this. I like this. The big rap towards what are they called the crescent, the crescendo.
Starting point is 00:02:52 The big chorus at the end is really powerful. We'll keep it up. And get you going? 10.03. Ridersmith. Rite Smith keeps you up. Just listen to this. This is a serious mid-80s banger. Turned up. Here we go. Yeah. Mid-80s cheese. Oh, stop. Here comes. Be ready. Cooper Hummel, you are this. I feel like having Jonathan here. I mean, it's not because it's mixing skills. They're getting better, but they're still not great.
Starting point is 00:03:44 We're taking it day by day. Yeah. We're getting there. There's the Cooper Hummel of mixing. It's getting better. And, you know, and he blows by some words rather quickly. We all do. Who does it? He's getting better at that. Yeah, it's getting better. But he doesn't know songs.
Starting point is 00:03:59 And unlike most kids of your age, and I still call you a kid, because I've got a son your age. Yeah, yeah, that's fine. You seem to appreciate the songs we put on the show as compared to just ripping the crap out of my oldest son does. And for that, I love you for that. These are good. You know, you all surprised me every time. I thought I knew music until I came. I'm like, dude, I don't know nothing, man.
Starting point is 00:04:18 I know. We're helping each other out. There's oceans of music. I'm discovered by all of us. Do you know who Billy Ocean is? No idea. Okay. Let's get him some Billy Ocean before the end of the show.
Starting point is 00:04:31 You don't like Billy Ocean? Sure. Oh, come on. Yeah, Billy Ocean's good. Little Caribbean Queen? All right. It's 80s night during the day on the Matt Thomas show of Ross. After the show today, let's go for a skate.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Now we won't go ice skating. at the gallery because there's a guy with a pair of bad legs on the ground still. They cleaned all that up. They swept up his bone fragments. Apparently it is going nationally viral because all my friends are sending me the videos. Yeah. It's funny. You know, I still feel bad for the guy.
Starting point is 00:05:05 He had two limp legs. Yeah, that's all I said. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. You still a high-end purse of a mature place. That's what's going to happen to you. It was glasses, sunglasses. That's it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:18 He was stealing sunglasses? That's it? Well, okay. Eyes from unconfirmed, like, Twitter for YouTube. Who are your people? Exactly. Unconfirmed Twitter for you tab. But it looked like the guy was just taking sunglasses and he was filming himself.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Is that true or is that fake news, guys? I don't know. I guess I shouldn't have said it. So I'm assuming he did lift the glasses, correct? I mean, there would be no way you. He was stealing something and was getting chased by the police. Yeah. And said, hey, that ice rink looks good.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Looks like a soft landing spot. He thought it was pillowy. I mean, wouldn't you want to go? He thought it was snow. Wouldn't you want to run to the playland at the gallery? Like, landing where the... No, you'd want to run to the exit, Matt. Well, but I mean, I said, as I told you yesterday, it's hard to exit a ball.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Yes, that's true. They do that on purpose. It's like trying to find the bathroom in a casino. They hide them. No question. So you pop down and plop down on the way. You're like, oh, screw it. I'm just going to sit a slot machine.
Starting point is 00:06:09 I mean, I've urinated in my pants before to casino. I know. I know. I've sold you. It wasn't great. It was when Barbara hit on that 14. What did you say? Jonathan? You should even talk about that because I think you're serious, Matt.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I did not urinate in a casino. I urinating on the spelling bee competition, but nobody knows that already. It's when Babs hit on that 14. You soiled yourself. I wanted to punch her. I don't believe in hitting women, but there's always exceptions to the rule. Oh, and it's when at the blackjack table? The blackjack table.
Starting point is 00:06:36 There's no rules of the blackjack table? I'd have punched her wig off. That's what I would have done. That wig would have been flying off. Yeah. You know, I should have taken the wig off for her and put it on me and see it. Look how stupid you look at it. on a 14 against a four.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Let her play her hand, Matt. Yeah, and we all lost. She lost and I lost. That's true. I let her play her hand and I was down $100. Dealer would have busted. And then he hit a $20 or $21, I can't remember. I think it was a $20.
Starting point is 00:07:02 It just hurt. Just hurt. Okay. Let's get back to more positive things. Cooper Hummel. Cooper Hummel. Cooper freaking. Robert Vaudes.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Robert skirted trouble? I mean, almost all night long, would you say? Yes. Got a couple of double plays, but that's what he does. It does. It's a ground ball pitcher. That's what good pitchers do. I mean, you still get seven innings and 92 pitches. It's not inefficient, but four walks
Starting point is 00:07:23 not ideal. That's what, nine walks in the last two games for him. Yeah. But he reeks of quality starts. It's going back to a couple years ago when he did the exact same thing. He's like, well, he didn't get a no decision yesterday, but I think at his last nine starts, he's seven and no. I mean, obviously
Starting point is 00:07:39 the ERA dropped yesterday. Philly's O for seven with runners in scoring position. Astros is O for three. All right. What is Morristy? It's astonishing to you. That Cooper Hummel was a hero of the game, or that Jake Myers' batted cleanup. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:07:58 What do you mean? Why is that astonishing? You know exactly what it is. OPS is over 750, average over 300, swinging a big bat. Let me tell you something. The Sultan of Swat, Jake Myers, what's up? If I would have told you in March,
Starting point is 00:08:15 yes? That your friend Jake The Rake Myers Jake the snake Myers Fan club
Starting point is 00:08:25 would be hitting cleanup in a game I gotta be honest fan club's feeling good I'm sure it is but if I would have said Chas McCormick
Starting point is 00:08:33 we've been fighting the Chas Chomper's for three years suck it Chas Chompers They're What do you call it? Inactive Yeah They're not chomping They're called gums now
Starting point is 00:08:43 They're not chomping But if I'd have told you You'd be bad in cleanup You'd be like What is every single player hurt I did, seriously, I don't know if, you know what a double take is? I did a triple take when I saw that. I was like, Jake, Jake Myers is batting cleanup?
Starting point is 00:08:58 No, it didn't matter because nobody in the line of hit yesterday. Yeah, Ranger Suarez was, I mean, he's just been fantastic this year. He's got to be really mad. You know, his earn run average is won in his last, since June 1st. 2.08 on the season. I mean, look, it was a win-win for me. Two good pitchers. Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:18 game was moving very quickly I was a little nervous because you were doing the post game I was waiting for the obligatory text I'm smelling extras no I would never do anything like that I wouldn't suggest that extra innings would be coming that would be rude
Starting point is 00:09:30 so somebody else has been sending me those texts for like the last 10 years yeah I must say he had the wrong number saved in your phone I know how you're built okay I'll come clean I did say something last night didn't I you got close
Starting point is 00:09:46 people or Twitter like did Ross text you. I'm like, no, he would not do such a thing. You know what the, at least I backed off when it was late night West Coast the other week. You did do an extra inning game. I did. And I had more calls last Friday than I had
Starting point is 00:10:00 last night. Typically, I'll peel the curtain back. We get more calls on home games because more people are getting in their cars listening and want to, but. And also more calls on losses because people want to complain. That's true. And I was thinking a Friday night game that didn't even start
Starting point is 00:10:16 until 840. I was like, all right, I'm going to be talking to myself for like 10 minutes, but I went to 1 o'clock in a morning. Yeah. I was done last night 10.15. I mean, people had to say what they wanted to say. Good win. Goodbye. Good night. Yeah, you're right. It's easier to complain than it is to. I mean, think about it. Yelp reviews, generally speaking, are you suck. Yes. As compared to this place was great. Mm-hmm. What we're going to do? Should we create a website that's nothing but positive reviews? Well, then nobody would go there because everybody have five stars. It would be unreliable. but it would be like the best of the best.
Starting point is 00:10:49 If you get onto our website, you are really good at what you do. How about the, we'll force the users for every negative review they give, they have to give at least one positive review. So if you hate this restaurant, like you can't have me some old Karen on there with like 15 negative reviews
Starting point is 00:11:05 and you've never said anything nice about anything because you just like to complain. Yeah, you want to show that you can not just dog cuss everybody you talk about. You've got to be nice about something. Okay. I like it. Do you hear crackling? I do.
Starting point is 00:11:20 I do. I do. I was like, do I have shampoo in my ear? How did the, how did the IT email go yesterday? I have not gotten a response. You send it what time? About 1.15 yesterday? And it's 10 o'clock. Yeah, they're working on it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:36 All right. We have no idea if the phones are working or not. I believe they are. I listen to Sean a little bit today. So I'm not crazy. You hear the crackling. You all hear the crackling. Yeah. It's freaking. It's very light. I imagine you can't hear it on there.
Starting point is 00:11:48 It's on the air. It has, you know what? You know, we're at a, but we're by a roaring fire. It sounds like somebody's opening a Wothers original. Very quietly. By the way, I have a bag of Werders Originals in the backseat of my car. You would. I was given to those.
Starting point is 00:12:03 It's got, butterscotch Thomas is what we call you. You could rip on those all you want. Oh, they're delicious. You put one in your mouth. It's ecstasy. That's very easy. 1013. My God, that's like three in this segment.
Starting point is 00:12:15 It is absolutely. It's a. delightful treat that anybody that wants a rip on Wothers, you can shut your bum ass up. Speaking of that, we'll have that 11.30 today. Brian Bogusevick at 11 o'clock. We have the news at noon, believe it or not today. And we have Ross intense NBA draft breakdown. How intense?
Starting point is 00:12:34 Hmm. One to 10.5. That's feel fair? Okay. Cooper Hummel. Cooper Flagg and then we'll go on from there. There's this one cat. The kid out of Rutgers who won't talk to anybody.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Ace Bailey. heard about this guy? I have not. He won't talk to me. He won't talk to you. He won't talk to any NBA team. You must have a spot he wants to go. I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:12:59 He said something like that. What would it be, though? Like if you have to talk to me, if you need to talk to me to draft me, then you're not really interested or something like that. It's something weird. These kids today. These kids today. 1014.
Starting point is 00:13:12 It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. If you'd like to chime in and brag about your Astros, who won again yesterday, won nothing and they still hold a four to half game little over Seattle. By the way, congratulations to the Cincinnati Reds. They beat the Yankees last night and 11 in 11 innings by a final score of 5 to 4, which means the Astros are all by themselves in second place among American League baseball teams record-wise. 713-212-5-7-90. I'm not going to play Billy Ocean all day long, but I don't think you can go that long for a four-hour show.
Starting point is 00:13:46 This? This is the 1985 at its best right here. People in 85 love this song. People went to the clubs to dance of this song. There's a lot of cocaine snorted to this song. Oh, sure. In, yeah, stonewashed jeans. A lot of hairspray sprayed to this song.
Starting point is 00:14:07 A lot of women wearing Mexican dresses. What? Mexican dresses. You know those long dresses the women when the 80s would wear? No. Oh, yeah, you do? Wait, with the flowers on them? Yeah, the flowers are up top.
Starting point is 00:14:19 ladies wearing them. No, all the moms in my school were wearing them. They were a big, big deal. I mean, my mom wore them, but she's Mexican. I don't know. Yeah, that's all I knew them is Mexican dresses. Wasn't even talking about the type of people that were wearing. It was just like where they're from. Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't know what I'm talking about, right? With the flower is uptown. I don't know. They're a full length. Okay. And they would twirl and dance? I don't know if the moms would. And play the Spanish guitar? I don't think they were doing that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:53 I mean, I guess you could. I mean, you went in Rome or whatever you are. Tejas? Yeah, I was going to say, wouldn't in Rome you're wearing Italian dresses. I don't know. What do they go wrong? What do they go wrong? Now I'm going to show you what I'm tech talking about.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Okay, no, I'm not calling you a liar. I just didn't know that. Yeah. And there probably was a formal name for them. Mexican dresses 1980. Let's take a look here. Folks, so while you're doing this, until I get to 500 follow it on Instagram,
Starting point is 00:15:27 I'm following everyone back at SportsRV on Instagram. You'll eventually stop following everybody? Maybe I'll go. Here we go. At Sports RV on Instagram. Thank you. Trying to build it up. Right there.
Starting point is 00:15:37 That's what I'm talking about right there. The flowers up top and there's a folding thing. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, they still wear those. My wife has one. Okay. But it's funny.
Starting point is 00:15:47 vintage Mexican dress in pink cotton fun 1980s I knew I wouldn't make it. Fun 1980s? Fun in 1980s? Music was mid, TV was great. Style was, as you said, a lot of hair spray. Got a little wacky. Got progressively weirder and there was kind of a reset. I don't know, around maybe late 90s, early 2000s.
Starting point is 00:16:10 But now it's cycling back. Yeah, if we want to forget the 90s, we just can, right? And ran about everything. What do you mean? You're trying to forget saved by the bell? Oh, Beverly Hills on 2 and O. Music of the 90s? What was the great?
Starting point is 00:16:24 Oh, no, I mean, big hip-hop revolution. Tupac, Notorious B-I-G, J-Z hitting the scene, Outcast, don't forget. Like, who had more? Would it be Whitney Houston and more top Billboard 100 in the 90s? Oh, probably Mariah Carey. Oh, that's true. She had like 13 number one hits or something like that. I can probably live without Marai Carrey music.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Okay. Until Christmas comes around. Well, I mean, now, do I want to look? great awakening She wanted me Toma Mottola What an idiot Right
Starting point is 00:16:57 Well you know You have mistakes made on both sides on that Everybody makes mistakes All right I mean Scarlett Johansson's been divorced twice God she was on the today show today Oh good gracious
Starting point is 00:17:09 Mount Rushmore Just perfection All right anyways Astros Go for a series win today This is what happens When you have a non-controversial one-nothing game Although Isak Parade has got called on an inside strike yesterday.
Starting point is 00:17:19 You know what? I also want to thank one of our co-workers. Dan, I appreciate you. I asked for a late swap. I had Astros tonight. I forgot I had something else. And he is always accommodating and always a great coworker. Thank you, Dan Matthews.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Just wanted to say that real quick. And host a Saturday show. And you do great with swaps too, Matt. Yeah, I'm a respectful swapper. That's why you get the pineapple. No, that's only in Santa Plantation. Shout out to the all of the day. wearing a pineapple shirt today.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Don't listen. Don't listen. I'm wearing a rocket shirt today to celebrate the big rockets. Well, no. Any given day you're wearing a free rockets or a free Cougar shirt. And that's okay. That feels fair. You've got to save money. You got kids in college. You got a mortgage. I got to buy you
Starting point is 00:18:06 a daytimeer today. Yes. Today? No, I'm getting one on Amazon. I'm not even waiting for you. Okay. I'm going to, let me just tell you, Ross is I'm very scatterbrained. He's, I would admit. You need a little, not a lot of organization in life, but you need a little organization. I got a lot of faults in my life.
Starting point is 00:18:25 And I write everything down on a daytimeer. And I may be the minority. A lot of people use their phones or computers or tablets or whatever, but I like to write it down. I like to see it in front of me. And I suggest you do the same thing. I wish I was more like that. There's a lot of ways that you are that I don't wish I was more like. Oh, geez.
Starting point is 00:18:40 But that is one of, I, I can get disorganized. So when the NBA schedule comes out, it gives me an opportunity to go to my favorite store of all-time office max or office depot or staples whatever and i like to go get a daytime or those 18 month day timers i'm going to buy you one of those so can you buy something is it gonna be one of those giant ones you have no i can get you smaller size you clock somewhere over the head with i just want like an eight by 10 like regular size or even smaller if you know what i'll do i will video chat you when i'm at the store to buy and said when you want this one when is this when the NBA schedule comes out let's late august what am i going to do till then
Starting point is 00:19:17 I'm going to be missing appointments and go to your outlook and just print a bunch of calendars. No, I'm going to just buy one on it. Don't worry about it. All right, so the Astros get a win, won nothing. And that Philly seems really good. I mean, Castellanos and company, and they just shut. Thankfully, Bryce Harper's hurt.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Not thankful, you know what I'm saying. Not missing him in the lineup. Too hurt for your... Yeah, he's not seriously hurt. He's going to be back in a cut next week, I think. It's always every year. He's almost like Yardon. There's going to be something.
Starting point is 00:19:47 every year that's going to derail him for a long. IP? I don't know. I would have to look at the game. I would say distinguished IH. Two-time MVP? Woo! He's going to a Hall of Fame, huh?
Starting point is 00:20:00 Yeah, when he plays, all he does is change baseball games. 145 games last year, but then 126, 99, 141, 58. Like, what is acceptable now for athletes? Oh, 58 was the COVID season. That's 58 at a 60.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I mean, can we, can we redesign? Like there's no more, there's no more Cal Ripkins. We know that. And there's not even no more of Jose Al-Tube because Jose didn't want to take days off, but now it's happening. I mean, we can't. These guys' bodies are breaking down because of the, I mean, it's just year-round. It's year-round.
Starting point is 00:20:33 They're working on their bodies and they're pushing themselves to the limit. But if they, here's the, here's the catch-22 on this. If they don't work out year-round and they wait until February 1st to get ready, then people say, well, why did you show up to camp? the way that you look. Why do you have a terrible month of April? No, you have to do it. Now, in the 1970s, when everybody was just crushing cases of beer and smoking sigs in the off season, that's okay. You're not behind.
Starting point is 00:20:56 But yeah, if you don't do it now, you're going to be behind. It's actually, frankly, unfair. I mean, I was looking at the video of Kevin Duran. He's out there shooting baskets all the time. Part of me was like, this is nice that you're working out. Part of him is, can you save this for October? Yeah. I get it. It's tough. Look, we have some generational type baseball
Starting point is 00:21:16 players. We have Mike Trout. When he plays, he absolutely makes a difference. But there's, you know, there's death taxes and the third guarantee is an extended stint for Mike Trout on the injured list. It just happens.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Yeah, last three, 29 games, 82 games, 119 games, 36 and 53. Woo! He had played, he's only played over 82 games once in the last five years. You're talking about Mike Trout, right? Mike Trout, yeah. He's got 52 this year.
Starting point is 00:21:52 You can get over 100. But they've played 80, so he's already missed a quarter of the season. It's kind of sad that you have these awesome players that you can't build around because first of all, you spend a gaudly amount of money on these guys, and second, well, they're missing significant period of time. I don't know what the solution is. I don't either. I mean, do you tell them not to jump on a bike or not to go in the wait room or not to swing a bat for until February 15th?
Starting point is 00:22:20 I don't know. I was reading that athletic article about the umpires, and part of that they were asking what the, what players want, and one of them said that Monday's off like in the minor leagues. Every Monday off. Yeah, because you really can't, you've already extended the regular season more than it ever has before.
Starting point is 00:22:42 You give those guys. You'd have to extend it more. You'd have to go back to 154, like in the Babe Ruth days. But that's probably never going to. I mean, that's 400. home games for everybody. Who would have a harder time getting that pass? The owners or the Players Association?
Starting point is 00:22:55 Probably the owners. I bet the players would do it. And pro-rate four less games? Ooh, they don't want to do that. That's what I'm saying. Who's going to have a bigger issue with all that? All right, 1030 on Sports Talk 790. 713-212-5-790 if you want to jump in. Your Astros, I want to ask a very simple question. How do you think they're doing it?
Starting point is 00:23:16 People always ask us, I had a call outside on the 10th inning show. How are they doing it? And I said, well, it's because of bullpen. It's because starting pitching has been really, really good. And you've had some guys that have been... Black Magic. You've had Jeremy Payne of his career. And you've got other heroes.
Starting point is 00:23:29 You got Cam Smith as adjusted while. You've got Eastak Pradesh perform better. And you also have Jake Myers performing at his very best. That's right. Am I arguing with you about it? Rake Myers. So what do you think is the number one reason why? They're 13...
Starting point is 00:23:45 This squad is 13 games above 500. I'll give you the number one reason. When we come back after Ross, you talk about some folks. All right. So you have, do you say you have the number one reason why you believe the Astros are 13 games above 500? By the way, this is the Matt Thomas Show at Ross. 713-212-5-7-90. Brian Bogussev. We'll be with us in about 25 minutes. Number one or just a reason that you thought of? The number one reason. The Astros are 13 games above 500. And this is legit? You're bullpen. Yep. Josh Hater, Brian Abraeu, each have a 1.78 ERA.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Abreu picked up the win. Hater with 20 saves and 20 opportunities. Other guys that have stepped up, the Brian Kings, the Bennett-Suzas, the, I mean the Caleb Orts, whoever, Stephen Oakhirt. I mean, everybody in that bullpen. We talked about ad nauseum in spring training. Like, who's going to be the bullpen after the top two guys? I alluded to that to yesterday.
Starting point is 00:24:48 We were talking to Joe Espon. I remember Ross, us being back here, them playing a couple of space cowboy games at Diken Park, and them not knowing who their bullpen was going to be. And this is when Taylor Scott, we relied on him. Yes. And he sucked. He sucked so bad. He kicked him out.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Yeah. Exactly. We're talking about him being the de facto seven inning guy. He ended up being Brian King. And it's the bullpen. I mean, credit to Dana Brown and the Astros pitching brain trust. for finding these guys. No, look, there's no if, answer buts about it.
Starting point is 00:25:27 When you go to the eighth inning, not 100% of the time, but it's like 98% of the time, you're going to give me a Brayu and Josh Hader, you're not scoring any runs. You've won... And there was no wiggle room last night. I mean, it was zero-zero game when he was out there pitching.
Starting point is 00:25:41 But one of them was at least. Yeah, that's how Brian Abraeu picked up the win. And Josh Hater, who for you has 20 saves, and what, five wins. That's five wins and 20 saves. He's been a factor in 25 of your 46 wins. Over half. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:01 So here is your bullpen. You mentioned Ben-Nutsuza. Jordan Weems has called up yesterday because Sean Dubin won in the injured list. Stephen Ocert, Caleb Ort, Brian King, Brian Abrayu,
Starting point is 00:26:12 Josh Hater. I mean, not a... Murder is Roe, baby? Not a fairly recognizable bunch except for me. maybe a Brayu and Hader. And Abraeus pitched a lot. I think four times in the last six days in the last night's game.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Yep. And I mean, he's been more effective, at least, you know, in terms of ERA, I'd have to look at the other numbers as far as last year. But he's been great.
Starting point is 00:26:34 He's been spectacular. And you are second in baseball in ERA, in terms of relievers. I'm looking at the... Giants are first, your second. And to a smaller extent, I'm looking at the Astros rotation off of their website.
Starting point is 00:26:46 And they list anybody that is considered a starter in their organization. and they have, okay, Frumber, Hunter, Colton Gordon, Ryan Gusto, Brandon Walter. And then they have guys, Aragetti, IL 60, Garcia, IL-60. McCuller's IL-15, J.P. France, IL-60. I mean, I think the Dodgers are in a similar spot, but very few teams have lost as much as they have. And that's not even, yeah, I was going to say Javier is on that list. I mean, this is incredible, the amount of injuries and grabbing guys you've never heard of before that have come through. And there's a part of you that goes, you know, when is, when is, what's the other shoe going to drop?
Starting point is 00:27:31 Yeah. Or what is the pumpkin? When is it going to turn, they're going to turn into a pumpkin? When does the clock strike midnight? Right. And hopefully it does maybe after the last out of the 2025 World Series. Yes. Because here's the thing, Ross, offensively, they're not going to be able to win.
Starting point is 00:27:45 a World Series? No. Defensively they can, pitching they can. They can be if, if and if, if Yordon comes back and some of the guys
Starting point is 00:27:56 keep things up and some of the other guys get better, they can be like a top 10 offense. They're not going to be a top five offense. No. And they're not going to be,
Starting point is 00:28:04 you know, like they have been, we always do a home run counter every day. The Astros have been between, say, 14th and 20th and home runs.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Yes, that's great. And the Dodgers and the Yankees are 1 and 2, and they're so far everybody else, that's fine. It's not even funny. But games aren't.
Starting point is 00:28:15 about home runs exclusively. It would be nice of a bunch of guys do it for you, but they have not won games that way. Yeah, but outside of Framber and Hunter Brown, I mean, nobody's even got an ER End or four as far as starters. Oh, Brandon Walter does at 380. All right, so let's put the cart war before the horse on this.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Playoffs started tomorrow. By the way, I want y'all to know this for, and I feel like we do this on a yearly, like a public service announcement, you need four pitchers in a playoff series. You just do. In a seven game, yeah. Well, even in a five game, honestly, There's only one day off.
Starting point is 00:28:46 So you really would be rushing somebody back. So let's skip past the wild card round. Okay. Let's go to a divisional series of five games, which you play over six days. Okay. Who is your, put your order of your rotation for the baseball playoffs? Hunter Brown, Frambe Valdez. Spencer Arigetti.
Starting point is 00:29:09 No, it's tomorrow. So he said tomorrow, sorry. Yeah, Lance McCuller's Jr.? Wait. Nope. Can't do that. he starts tomorrow. Colton Gordon?
Starting point is 00:29:17 You know what, forget about tomorrow. Let's think about October. You said come playoff time. I know, I know. Erigeti, to me, as long as he comes back, you would think the arm would be in good shape. Yeah, cool. Gusto has the experience, but he's been giving up run.
Starting point is 00:29:31 He has the experience because he started the most games. So put it this way. If we were to get your crystal ball out. You throw a bullpen game in there, I guess. Yeah. If you had your crystal ball, Erigetti, Garcia, McCullors, Javier, France. Of those five, can you rely on two of those five?
Starting point is 00:29:48 Crystal ball. Aragetti, Javier. Ooh. And moving my colors the bullpen. Swing roll. No Garcia? You asked for a gut feeling. I know.
Starting point is 00:30:06 I know. Bullpen. Ashtro's ERA, for starters, by the way, is eighth. For relievers, it is second in baseball. Pretty good. Are we going to put a lot of pressure on any of those five guys? to do what they used to do before they got hurt. I mean, we're talking about extended injuries here.
Starting point is 00:30:28 Yeah, Javier's throwing BP. We got the nice big update from the Astros yesterday. Let's see. Javier threw a 20-pch BP. That means he could be August. Feels like it. Unless you get August and September, you get two months under your belt,
Starting point is 00:30:43 he's ready to go for the playoffs. Everybody's throwing, right? I mean, from what I saw yesterday, everybody's throwing. Yeah, it doesn't sound like Eraggetti is. reported to Florida to build up to game action, whatever that means. Okay. So, but yeah, Luis Garcia, live BP.
Starting point is 00:30:58 Christian Javier, live BP. Lance McCullors Jr., throwing off a mound. And you'd figure he wouldn't need like a full rehab program because he's only missed a couple of weeks. Okay. J.P. France? You're good. We'll see in 2020.
Starting point is 00:31:12 Yeah, see in Sugar Land. Poor kids have been working a year and a half to get back and you sent him to Sugar Land for a few days. He threw a live beef. Okay, I mean, he's... I know, I know. Fifth, fourth place on these, our fifth place on these five pictures, right? If you're relying on JP France to help you at any point, I mean, I like Jay-Price.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Yeah. Great story. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Huge help in what, was that? 23? Yeah. Yeah, but it had a subpar started last year and then got heard and we haven't heard from him since. So you've got to put in perspective.
Starting point is 00:31:38 All right, 1043.43. It is a Matt Thomas show with Ross. If you'd like to jump in, come on in and say hello to us. We'd love to have you. 713-212-5-790. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-7-91. All right.
Starting point is 00:31:55 Ari Alexander, over at Channel 2, just tweeted out something interesting. He tweeted out that the Astros were in contract negotiations worth Jeremy Payne on a five-year deal. Okay. How's that going? Not well. Oh, why not?
Starting point is 00:32:16 Let me give you the exact tweet here on us so I can get it. I have it for you. I agree. Read it out. Yes, the Astros and SS would be shortstop. Jeremy Pena, deep in contract extensions for a deal, were deep in contract extension discussions for a deal, exceeding $105 million over five years, multiple sources tell KPRC2. That's 21 million a year.
Starting point is 00:32:41 Yes. Now, depending on what he can get in arbitration, and, you know, the first reaction from people will be, oh, that's a way underpay. Yes, but in arbitration, you're not generally, unless you're one of the best in baseball, getting $20 million a year in arbitration. So they're buying those years out and paying a little more on the front end
Starting point is 00:33:02 to save on the back end is what it would be. Reading the context on this, were meaning that was prior representation. Yes. I mean, I'm just trying to see what the average, or what Jeremy Payne is making in his, I'll take a call while you do that. Yeah, you do that, sorry.
Starting point is 00:33:26 But the reality is it's the past tense. Mm-hmm. Yeah, he's making $4 million this year. And arbitration, yeah, this year. So who knows what he would make? I think it was around $14 million for Frumber and Tucker in arbitration. Now, who does signs these arbitration numbers? Is this...
Starting point is 00:33:47 I don't know, because they keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Right. It's it's convoluted, I get it. But point being is that when Ari's tweet says it says, we're meaning that
Starting point is 00:33:58 that's no longer on the table because Scott Boris said I can get you much better than that. Okay, I lied. Frombers make it 18 this year in arbitration. So maybe honestly 20 is a slap in a face. But it escalates as you go on in years. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:12 With service time. I don't know. Even in arbitration, you can make really, really good money. Yeah. And then it goes up and up and up. Yeah. So. It's passed. It's thing of the past.
Starting point is 00:34:22 It's not going to be, I guess, no longer on the table. Yeah, I can't imagine them giving that deal today and Scott Boros going. That sounds about right. The biggest arbitration contract one-year deal was $31 million from Juan Soto, O'Tani with $30 million as well. So that would be the most you could possibly make in an arbitration year if you're Juan Soto, which Jeremy Payneck, great player is not. No, but he's going to be more than, I mean, he will get a high,
Starting point is 00:34:51 especially coming off of this year. he will be he stand to do very well for himself david spring on 790 Dave good morning hey good morning guys enjoy the show thank you I've listened to your conversation about you know why the astros are where they are now 13 games over 500 and you talk about the bullpen being great and it is and penny and Myers you know overperforming and they are I don't think you give enough credit to the guy you
Starting point is 00:35:15 talk to for 10 minutes every Tuesday and that is Joe Espada you know I mean if they were 13 under 500 right now I don't be screaming for his head, but they're 13 over and everyone's going, why are they so good? I can't figure it out. I mean, the guy deserves some credit. And it's not just X's and O's, it's about how he manages the people. And that's what you've got to be able to do. And he's got a really good tone set in that clubhouse. They're all, it works. And Joe deserves credit. I don't think he gets enough. I just want to throw that out there. Oh, I don't know, but I don't if you're active on Twitter or not, but Ross routinely puts the, where I don't see the Joe Espada
Starting point is 00:35:51 haters out. I mean, we routinely make fun of the, when the Astros win baseball games, that the Joe Espada lovers don't come out. You are maybe the first one that's done that. Yeah, we appreciate that. Yeah. But I will stay consistent. I will say it's mostly the players. Joe does a good job. And I think even when they're losing and when they were losing last year, Joe does a good job. It's about the players who have to handle it. So is Joe putting them in a position to succeed, making good lineups, making good bullpen decisions? Yes. but also the players have to go out there and perform. So he does deserve some credit.
Starting point is 00:36:22 But I think when they're losing, people put all the blame on him. That's ridiculous. And when they're winning, you can't give him most of the credit. No, again, he, to me, and look, we know him from our Wizzled to visits. Love Joe.
Starting point is 00:36:33 He does a great job. He's very even keeled. Yes. And I will say this. The best managers in any sport, coaches are the ones that are they, don't get super high these days. days, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Yeah. And maybe they're built that way. I mean, I don't know. You got like the Jim Leland's back of the day who were like... Tabinal Sorters. I don't think Bill Belichick was so even killed. He just didn't know what you see it. I was thinking Bill Barsell is the guy that would kind of go crazy at a...
Starting point is 00:37:04 The taskmaster type doesn't really work these days. No, not for this generation. They're like, I'm making $40 million. Shut your bum ass up. You know, I don't even make $40 million to get screamed at every day. Yeah. Yeah, for me, I've always appreciated of calmness and frankly, his defense of some players,
Starting point is 00:37:21 I mean, he tried as long as he could to defend Jose Obrayout first base. He tried to reform Raphael Montereyro to give him some sort of role on this baseball team. He is a player's manager and they respond to that, for sure. And I'll tell you this, Ross, I don't know if you're not a player's manager, you're not going to make it.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Yeah, unless you already have like five championships and whatever sport you're in. Like, Belichick's being as boorish as he was, worked because he was winning Super Bowdo's over here. You have to respect. You can't say nothing. Yeah, Greg Pavvich or whatever. It's like, all right, yeah, you got to do what he says. This guy kind of knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:37:55 He's got five, five, six championships. Look at DeBeta. Well, not a player's coach. No, and didn't have the skins on the wall. He's gone. No. The leash is super short. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:05 As a coach once told me, if I don't take care of my star, I'm out. Period of his story. Let's go to Bobby before we talk to Brian Bogus Civic. Hello, Bobby. Hey, good morning. I think that caller had a very valid point. I also think that for whoever is responsible, whether it's the owner, the general manager, the manager, that I think that all the players genuinely really get along with each other.
Starting point is 00:38:29 You see the home run last night, and they were all so happy for that guy knowing the struggles he's been through. And I just think, you know, it started with Biggio and Bagwell. That clubhouse has always just been, you know, very positive. and I really think that has a lot to do with their success. I wanted to just slide over a little bit and talk about Pena and Myers. Pena is batting 55 points higher than his career average, and Myers is betting 65 percent, 65 points higher than his career average, and I think a lot of it has to do with neither one of them are chasing pitches as much,
Starting point is 00:39:05 but also think that they're both doing a great job of using the whole field. And quickly turning the other way, Diaz is batting forward. 42 points lower, now Tuvay's batting 41 points lower. And I think that has a lot to do with the fact that they are chasing a lot of pitches, and they aren't hitting that many balls for right field. And I heard that Diaz was betting way above 300 when he hits the ball to the right side of second base. And I think that, you know, they always say so-and-so is coming out of his slump. He's hitting it the other way.
Starting point is 00:39:36 And I just think that some of these guys should look at Myers and Payne, and the way they're spreading the ball around and maybe copy what they're doing. And I love your show and I appreciate you. Thank you so much. All right. Thank you for the phone call. Yeah, I can't really argue much.
Starting point is 00:39:52 I mean, Diaz is the first hit the game yesterday. Was right at second base. It was a seeing, as the kids would say, a seeing-eye single. Is that what the kids are saying? No, I don't think any kid. I don't think any kid is saying seeing a single. Yeah, Diaz has had some bad luck this season.
Starting point is 00:40:08 And Al-2A-2. and Peña and Jake Myers have had some good luck too but also I mean you you pack they're also the plate appearance has been better for Jake and Jeremy Pena as well I mean it's it's all wrapped up into one it's it's it's a lot of discussion points that we can have on them individually yeah
Starting point is 00:40:24 1058 sports talk 790 we talk to Brian Bogosovic next if you're on the line want to hold through that we would get the expert next yeah us nomads you know the hell I'm talking about how we're talking about we're just guessing throwing stones against something right All right. 713-212-1-5-790. 11-03, Sports Talk 790. Your Astros win 1-0 over the Phillies.
Starting point is 00:40:50 We're going to spend 10 quality minutes with the main way joins us every Wednesday here on the show. Space City Home Networks. Brian Bogus Sevik. Brian, one-nothing. We've seen quite a few of those over the course of the year. How many times have we seen and how many times have we not shaking our heads over the fact that Jake Myers batting cleanup for the local nine last? night. Yeah, that was a little unexpected showing up at the ballpark and looking at the lineup.
Starting point is 00:41:15 I think it just kind of speaks to where the organization, where the coaches are at with, you know, some of the guys who've struggled early, right? Christian Walker, Yiner, those guys, they've been waiting for them to turn it around. You know, we're going to be here in a couple days and it's going to be the halfway point. You know, at some point, your leash has run out. And when you're writing out the lineup every day, you just got to take the guys that are swinging the bat the best. And I know, you know, your four or five hitters prototypically aren't going to be Jake Myers and Cam Smith, but they're both swinging the bat well. And you've got to get guys behind Pena, Parades-L-Tuve, who are going to potentially drive and run. Didn't happen yesterday, but, you know, it's not a terrible idea.
Starting point is 00:41:55 It is interesting how the game worked out yesterday. Ranger Suarez, I mean, the ERA is about a one this month. Frymberg gives you quality starts. You know, I don't know if today's baseball fan wants 100 of those kind of one. nothing games, but I was in tune with it because I first of all appreciate what both guys did. And secondly, I wanted to see who was going to flinch first. And of all people, Cooper Hummel was the man to be the hero for the local nine last night. Yeah, I think you, you know, if you're a true baseball fan, you really appreciate games like that because, you know, everything, you'd have to do
Starting point is 00:42:30 everything well in a type game like that. It was obvious from, you know, the first couple of innings that that was going to be a low scoring game. So all of a sudden, you know, you've got to play good defense. You know, you've got to run the base as well. You can't make a mistake pitch, you know, over the middle of the plate. You've got to really tighten down when there's runners in scoring position. And that's fun baseball to watch, in my opinion, when both teams have to be on it. When you're a lot of times watching a 10 to 9 game, it can be a little bit sloppy and it just
Starting point is 00:42:59 all gets kind of washed away with all the runs that are being scored. I enjoy a game like that. But, yeah, Major League Baseball doesn't want to see that. every night. No. How did Framber do it yesterday where he was kind of avoiding disaster? They've got on the base paths a lot through some a few hard knocks, some of the
Starting point is 00:43:15 walks, and that's what, nine, nine walks for Framber over the last couple of games, but every single opportunity presented itself and he came through and didn't let anybody cross the pay station for Philadelphia. Yeah, first of all, you know, he had really good stuff yesterday. His command wasn't as sharp
Starting point is 00:43:31 as we've seen at times, but just the pure stuff, the movement on the You know, the break on the curveball was all really good. And when you have that good of stuff, you know, you can just keep going to the well and eventually you'll be successful. But I think what was really important yesterday was he kept a really level head. You know, he had a walk, I think, in each of the first three innings. There were a couple errors mixed in.
Starting point is 00:43:54 So like there's a lot of traffic on the bases. And sometimes, you know, as a pitcher, you can get into those situations and you think, okay, I got to get nastier. I've got to go for the strikeout here. I've got to put a little bit more on this fastball and hump up a little bit. He just kept his cool and kept making pitches. And when he does that, you're going to get ground balls. You're going to get double plays.
Starting point is 00:44:13 You're going to get yourself out of the inning. And I thought he did a really nice job navigating some tough situations by keeping his head and not trying to do more and not making situations worse. Brian Bogus-evick with us here on Sports Talk 790 and the big series with the Phillies and the Cubs coming to town as well. players and coaches and everyone will always say publicly, yeah, we want to win every game and we take them all the same. But how much truth is that as you as a former player? Like when it's the Phillies and Cubs coming in town, is there a little extra juice? I think so, but I think it probably becomes more externally. You know, you get there and there's a little bit of a buzz in the stadium.
Starting point is 00:44:53 It's crowded. The fans show up earlier. You know, there's more stimulation from that standpoint. You know, guys know that they have to be on top of their game. you're playing a good team, you're playing a first place team, you're going to see a ton of really good pitching. So guys can feel that, but it's not like it's, okay, now we're going to try harder. Now we're going to, you know, really focus on our scouting reports and, you know,
Starting point is 00:45:14 dot eyes and cross-tees. That stuff is happening regardless. And I just think there's a little bit extra juice just because of the buzz that's in the stadium. But now, you know, it's, it really sounds cliche to say it's one of 162, but it really is. And especially this time of the year where, you've got a bunch of games behind you, so you're kind of in the drag of the season. But at the same time, you know, you're so far from the end where you're not really scoreboard watching or anything.
Starting point is 00:45:43 So, yes, in the clubhouse, it's just one of 162. But, yeah, you can feel the little bit of extra juice when you know that the fans are into it. Both Bryce Harper and Yordon Alvarez missing from this series. And we were talking about in the last hour, Brian, about, we've talked a lot about pitching injuries. but position player injuries, I think it feels like are up. I don't know if you agree with that, but we were just kind of thinking, is it guys just pushing their bodies to the limit, or are we just kind of noticing the injuries and it's always been like that?
Starting point is 00:46:14 Probably a little bit of both. You know, we hear a lot more of the day-to-day stuff regarding, you know, the 29 teams that aren't in our city, so we can feel that a little bit more. But, yeah, you know, where strength and conditioning has gone over the last 10 years, you're really pushing the envelope. Guys are bigger, stronger, faster. They work out more. They push themselves harder.
Starting point is 00:46:37 And, you know, as you push yourself towards that edge a little bit, every once in a while it goes a little bit too far and you get banged up and, you know, you get injured. I think also teams are more willing to be cautious with players and guys feel a little bit of something and you immediately say, okay, we're not going to push it. You know, we're going to sit you down for a couple days or we're going to put you on the IEL for 10 days and get ahead of it because, you know, there's so much volume throughout the course of the season that, you know, and with with the length of the season plus the expanded
Starting point is 00:47:11 playoffs and there's just more of a path to getting into the playoffs and the goal is really to be healthy in that full strength at the end. So I think teams have also figured out that, you know, weighing the option of pushing a guy during the middle of the season versus laying back and having him healthy at the end. It's more valuable to do that. Bogie with us here on Sports Talk 790. The Astros have been very fortunate over their history to have great eighth and ninth inning guys.
Starting point is 00:47:39 This a Brayu hater combo, sub-2-ERA, winning games, very, very rare poor performances. I mean, bullpen in itself has been a hero all year long, but these guys have been an outstanding one-two combination that I think that the, The Astros obviously said we think we can spend some serious money on Josh, and it'll be well worth it. Last year, good, this year, phenomenal. Yeah, you know, you try really hard not to take it for granted, but it feels pretty automatic, right?
Starting point is 00:48:12 It feels like once you get to those two guys that you're going to get two zeros and the game's going to be over. And, you know, the kind of stuff that they have, the power stuff, overwhelming fastballs, overwhelming sliders, it allows for market. of error for them. And even on days when they don't have their best stuff, they're still going to win most of the time because it's just that good. I mean, you miss a spot with 99. It's still 99 and really difficult to hit.
Starting point is 00:48:39 And when you have two of those guys, you know, you can make an argument that there are other, you know, tandums at the back of the bullpen that are as good as those guys or have been as good, but I don't know that you can really make the case that there's anybody that's been definitively better than those two.
Starting point is 00:48:54 everyone says all right what do you do at the deadline do you stand pat if it ain't broke don't fix it get the second best record in the american league you got some guys coming back and then there's always this conversation about the astros need another left-handed bat now clearly if yordaun comes back whatever it is and he picks up where not necessarily left off pre-injury but the normal jordan we're in let me ask you this as we speak to you today even with yordaun still in the injured list how desperate do you believe the astros are if they are at all for a need of a left-handed bat in their everyday lineup? I wouldn't call it desperate, but I would say it would definitely be useful.
Starting point is 00:49:33 Even with, you know, assume Yordon comes back and he's healthy and he's Jordan and he's producing like crazy, and you've got that big lefty bat right in the middle of the lineup, I think you still need another one. You know, a lot of times we'll see this team, you know, put out a very right-handed lineup against a power right-handed pitcher, particularly right-handed pitchers with good sinkers, and it's really difficult to score runs. You know, you need that balance, not just because you get the platoon advantage of going to the other side, but oftentimes just having the lefties in the lineup to make the pitcher throw to different locations, make them use different pitches, make them go to their changeups more, you know, getting them off of their spot a little bit
Starting point is 00:50:14 can create mistakes. You don't want to run out of a lineup there, even with Yordon, where there's eight other right-handed hitters where a pitcher can just go sinker down and sinker down and in slider, I got you, and just do the same thing over. You're not, you know, you have to make them go all over the strike zone because that creates opportunities for them to screw up. That creates opportunities for them to be off with something and then you get the advantage. So, yeah, even if it's not an everyday type of that, even if it's a guy who, you know, can come in and platoon with somebody or just be an option to give somebody a day off and give you a, matchup advantage every once in a while. I think it would definitely be a welcome addition. Talking about the
Starting point is 00:50:55 bats the Astros do have, we were also talking about batted ball luck and how it's been pretty good for Payne and Myers, but it's been pretty bad for guys like Altuvae, Walker, Yainer Diaz as well. Can you just, you as a player and then now you as an analyst of the game,
Starting point is 00:51:12 just how much, if at all, do you pay attention to those types of things? You do, because you kind of want to know what's going on. And, you know, everybody's always looking to make an adjustment. Everybody's looking to, you know, change something to try to get better. And, you know, if you're going out there and you're doing everything the way that you're supposed to do it, and it's just not finding a hole, then you have to kind of sit back and say, okay, I don't need to make change just for changes sake. You know, eventually
Starting point is 00:51:43 things will turn in my favor. So, yeah, you want to be aware of that. But at the same time, You know, you don't need those numbers to know whether or not you're executing your at bat. You know if you're swinging at good pitches. You know, you know, yeah, the numbers might reinforce it one way or the other, but you really have a good feel for where your swing is at regardless of what that number says. Brian, great stuff. As always, thank you very much for the time. We'll talk again next week.
Starting point is 00:52:11 And what is your TV schedule the next handful of days? I'm on the rest of this series, and I am off for the weekend. wait a minute you're not going to be there for the Kyle Tucker Ryan Presley tribute Friday night I will not I'll have to I'll have to catch a replay that is nearly dedicated as we thought you were that's fine let the man enjoy a weekend you know what
Starting point is 00:52:34 take the family out for a nice dinner they deserve it all the time you spend away at the boulevard or I'll be sitting at swim meets all weekend oh I see you know what you're dad of the year thanks bogey for the time as always all right see you guys we'll see Brian Bogusovic I will say this.
Starting point is 00:52:51 There were a couple of things as a youth, a young father, I should say, that I absolutely stared my kids away from. Swimming? Swimming was number one. Really? Yes. Why?
Starting point is 00:53:02 Because they have obnoxious hours. He's not lying. Yeah, I don't. Five, thirty, six o'clock in the morning getting to. Hell no. And then the swim meets, you're in this. Well, you don't want to be out there at noon in Houston. It's cold in those swim meets.
Starting point is 00:53:15 But those swim meets are, it's hot, it's human, and the air conditioning. people get sick all the time in those things? Oh, really? Nope, nope, nope. Number two was... Plus, you're swimming and urine? Gymnastics. I want to know part of that for Carly.
Starting point is 00:53:28 I don't. Injuries? No, I just didn't like it. So you steered your daughter away. She could be a limp... Well, no, she's too tall. Yeah, she's 6'1, yeah. I steered it in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:53:38 I've got to be honest with you on this. Yeah. She's got to be like 4-8. So I think she's a little too tall. The boys played baseball. My middle one played soccer and loved playing soccer. And I loved watching him play soccer. Who?
Starting point is 00:53:51 Peyton loved to play. He played soccer? In high school. I don't know that. Yeah, yeah. He likes it. Cool. Does he watch?
Starting point is 00:53:55 No. No. No. Cameron does. But Payton doesn't watch it. He played but doesn't watch. Correct. And the other son didn't play but watches.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Yes. That's interesting. That's a cool dynamic if you think about it. I think it is too. That is too. All right. 1116. Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 00:54:09 719. 719. We've got a little breaking news on the Rockets. Mm-hmm. And I'm frankly stunned. at the number. Would you not be? Are you stunned?
Starting point is 00:54:24 When we come back, we'll discuss. Oh, okay. I got you. We got a little bit of breaking news here on the Matt Thomas show at 1122. Rossi, worth a second one? Sure, why not? Let's hit it one more. Sure, why not?
Starting point is 00:54:39 It helps us with my microphones on. The Rockets have signed Fred Van Vleet. Yes? to a two-year, new two-year deal. Yes. Worth $50 million. $50 million. Can he buy me one meal?
Starting point is 00:55:02 Probably not. I guess that's true. You get all your free meals from Rockets anyways. So does he. Yeah. Got a little extra spare change. He's investing. Very big. All of this guys is tied up.
Starting point is 00:55:15 It is a guarantee for this year. It is a player option for next year. So, what? Yeah. Yeah, this is surprising. Because his original deal was $44.9 million. So let me deduce this, and I could be completely wrong. If I think we got a chance to win for a couple of years,
Starting point is 00:55:39 I'll take my 25-milly each year. Right. But if I don't like what's going on here, I'll bow out and try to go get more. money elsewhere? Yeah, he's, I mean, he's got the leverage, number one. They give him the ability to opt out, but I don't know how many teams are going to be wanting to assign him
Starting point is 00:56:01 to long-term deals more than 25 million a year. But I thought, I mean, I was just randomly throwing a number out when we were talking about this early in the off season. I thought it was going to be like 390. I'm surprised it's not three years. I'm surprised it's only $50 million. $25 million a year. And this sounds like we're whack.
Starting point is 00:56:21 I mean, it sounds like we're clinically ill. for a point guard of his ability. And I know that people are like, well, he's slow and small. He still is a very good NBA point guard. Oh, God. Rock his Twitter hates him. And then the seven game series against the Warriors, they loved him. He played it out of his mind.
Starting point is 00:56:36 It's good value. It's strange as to say, it's good value. It is. So someone came into our office in our studio during the break and said, is this just a precursor to going after a, another big fish in the next one to two seasons. Because you're getting Fred Van Vleet under the four.
Starting point is 00:57:03 He was supposed to make $44.9 million. Yes. In one year. You shave 20 off of that. Yeah. You shave 25 essentially, if not anymore. Because that would have been a one year, $45 million. You're getting him now two for 50.
Starting point is 00:57:18 Yes. Kevin Durant, if you believe the rumors, the Twitter streets. Maybe signing a deal, an extension here that would be less than what he could possibly get. Are you saving money? And there's a grandiose plan that says, I want to, in the Rockers are saying, I want to bring this player to town, we've got to clear as much space as possible. Now, this will give them a larger mid-level exception to use on somebody.
Starting point is 00:57:48 And maybe they're just doing it just for that. Yeah. Or they really. Maybe you could get another piece. maybe not just a big huge piece or maybe they go for the big huge piece who would that be Matt oh I don't practice saying that's a long name
Starting point is 00:58:06 oh what are you saying sports RV uh uh atento cumpo artetto umpo how do you how do you what's that's largely speculative on your part I'm just saying he's available well maybe no he's not available at this point can we stop with the way can the can the rockets move back to the eastern conference like the
Starting point is 00:58:26 old days? They were at Eastern team way back in the day. Way back in the day. There's like 19 teams in the league, but that's, you know. Let's shift back. You can't go back when the New Orleans... Swap for the Celtics. When the New Orleans Jazz were in there?
Starting point is 00:58:39 Yeah. Now, you know that when the NBA expands, if they go to Las Vegas and into Seattle, they'll have to take... They'll have to take one team move to the east, but it'll be Houston. Houston, why not? No.
Starting point is 00:58:49 The three favorites... Who is it going to be? It's either going to be Memphis, New Orleans, or the Timberwolves. They're... No. Okay, fight me. Go ahead. I want to hear this.
Starting point is 00:58:58 Oh, it should be the Rockets. Because? Bring the Rockets home. Okay. So, I don't want to buy into what you just said, but there'll be a few people that will try to put the two and two together on that. I don't think that's going to happen. I think they're just going to have more flexibility with role player options. My prediction on this, and again, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:59:22 And the inside would be they're going to have more room to go get a guy that's, oh, that's a nice of pickup. That's a guy, like a I'll just throw, Nas Reid, for example. Ooh, okay. Nas Reid, let's go. I think Nas is going to come in more than a middle level, but you know what I'm saying? A kind of a player like that.
Starting point is 00:59:36 Come on down. Trade for Derek White. Can they afford that? I don't know. I'm not a capologist. But you play one in the radio. All right, ladies and gentlemen, this is our favorite half hour of the week, right?
Starting point is 00:59:47 This is where you just lay it all out. 713-212-5-790. I'm going to tell somebody, to shut their bum ass up that you're really going to appreciate. And this guy called me on the 10th inning show last night, Rossi. And I'm going to tell him to shut his bum ass up right now. 713-212-5-790. If you want to tell somebody to shut their bum-ass up, 7-13-212-5-7-90.
Starting point is 01:00:13 If you have somebody you want to tell a story in your life, a boss, a coworker, your mother-in-law just dravels and just talks and talks and says nothing in return, and so, hey, nobody got time for that. We'll do that too. 713-212-5-790. You want to follow us on Twitter? You may do that as well. It's at SportsMT, at SportsRV,
Starting point is 01:00:34 and at Sports Talk 790. Shut your bum ass up is next. Ain't nobody getting time? Ain't nobody getting time for day. Ain't nobody getting time for that? Ain't nobody getting time for that? 1133, Sports Talk, 790. It's our favorite way to cleanse, our emotions, our anger,
Starting point is 01:00:59 and we don't do it and judge. We just say what we got to say and move on. To Brad, who called me on the 10th inning show. Brad, friend of the show, friend to all. One of our favorites. He's not my friend. Ripping the crap out of me
Starting point is 01:01:17 for ripping on Cooper Hummel. You ripped on Cooper Hummel? I was like, you didn't get you. Cooper Hummel wasn't even in my conversation piece in my life. Not that I'm anti-Cupertummel. I had no opinion of Cooper Hummel. Hummel. Did I
Starting point is 01:01:34 probably throw them in a collection of guys that nobody never heard of playing for the Astros? Yes. That's been part of the charm of the Astros in 2025. A guys that you'd never heard of helping the team. I wasn't smirching Cooper Hummel. I wasn't calling him a bad player. I didn't even remember bringing up Cooper Hummel.
Starting point is 01:01:50 So to Brad, who I defend you more than anybody else, shut your bum ass up, man. Shit your bum ass up, man. See, why do you even do that? Well, I mean, yes, I was like, this is making, give me a bad, give me a headache. 10.15 a night. Good.
Starting point is 01:02:04 That should teach you not to take his calls. Well, again, Brad, you know what? You deserve a double. Shut your bum ass up. I wouldn't ever take... Shut your bum ass up, man. I've been different to Cooper Humble,
Starting point is 01:02:13 but I literally love him after last night's home run because it saved me if I'm doing a late night show. Yeah, Brad asks like anybody who puts on a Sugar Land Space Cabo uniform is a future Hall of Famer. I mean, we've been through the list. The Brennan McCurries, the Cooper Humbles,
Starting point is 01:02:25 the Joey Lopofitos. Will Wagner, I think he said, was taking over in Toronto. Yeah. Shut your bum ass up. help you out too, Matt. You're all checking in there. Brad. You're more than welcome. It's Willie Wagner up to these days. Let me check this out.
Starting point is 01:02:38 Nobody calls him Willie Wagner. That's crazy. That'd be funny. Willie and Billy is dead and his son. I think he probably calls himself Will for a reason, not to be confused with Willie Wagner. Yeah, Willie and Billy. What's the problem? All right, why don't you do that next time he comes to town? Oh, the Blue Jays
Starting point is 01:02:54 aren't coming back, are they? No, they're done here. No. Yeah, they're... Now, the Astros playing Toronto. Was he rehearsed? Was he hurt? was he rehabbing in rookie ball? Who? Will Wagner hitting 250 in Buffalo this year?
Starting point is 01:03:08 No. And 186 at the Major League Glove. And Joey La Profito? I don't have a lot. You should always have Syracuse Blue Jay baseball on your desktop. Everybody was screaming about Joey Lo Perfito being the next great thing.
Starting point is 01:03:21 Shut your bum ass up too. I'm trying to pull it off. My-fi spot of here. That's fine. Let's see. He hasn't played for the Major League team since the end of April. Where he was hitting, uh, no, wait, no.
Starting point is 01:03:36 My Wi-Fi's messed up. That's fine. We'll sit, move on. I was, that was somebody else. Jonathan, what's the matter with you this week? You know, when you go to places, and it's usually the older people, I'm sorry to call you a lot. Oh, Jesus. Here comes the ages thing again.
Starting point is 01:03:50 It's because it's a real issue. If I'm, if we are in any facility and we have, there's a line, okay, and people have to stand behind another one, right? All right. I do not understand why I can smell your breath. I can smell you must. Oh. I do not understand why you're so close to me. And then when the line scoops up in front of me,
Starting point is 01:04:14 you think it's time for you to scoot ahead and get closer to me. Okay. Where did this happen, by the way? At, uh, how around this? Ballmart. Oh, Walmart. Okay. I know where Walmart is.
Starting point is 01:04:25 Yeah. There's a few. I just don't, it happens everywhere I go. I don't understand why it's such a hassle. It's just a rush to go. Go places. We're in line together. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Starting point is 01:04:35 Ain't nobody got time for that? So you do know, you want people to go to Balbart and have good smelling breath. No, to give me at least six feet away. At least be far away to where you can't smell it. I don't even want to think that if you sneeze, I might just get a germ. If you're pulling up with the stank breath, you've got to pull away. Smelling like chewing and everything. Like, oh.
Starting point is 01:04:59 No, was this a ballbart in the city limits or are you outside of the city limits? Outside the city of this. Well, that's going to go without saying that, right? I think no matter where you are. It's ballbart not the classiest joint. Which I love, I go there all the time. Let me tell you, I go to Ballbart and Porter. Ooh.
Starting point is 01:05:15 Really? Oh, it's what you think it is. Girl Scouts sell meth in the front there at the tables. Mm. Used to be a McDonald's, they had big bottles in there. Yeah, they got rid of those. I guess, do they have a partnership that dissolved? Past tense, I guess.
Starting point is 01:05:30 Man, that used to be convenient. on the way out and get a McDouble and small fry get you a 20 piece of box fan Exactly That's a one two punch you can't deny All right Anything else anything from you? Are you just piggybacking off of me?
Starting point is 01:05:45 Yeah, I'm just gonna go with that Well, I also said the people who are all upset about Joey Lopofito I'll go with that. I'll stick with that And Brad and you can always tell Brad to shut his bum ass up Okay, how about this Wi-Fi that? I'm having Wi-Fi issues right now I can't even pull up Joey Lop Profito's debts our Wi-Fi run by Domcast
Starting point is 01:06:04 and we had the phones going out yesterday and I still have not gotten a reply from IT ain't nobody got time for any of this. Did you ask for a read receipt on the email? No, I put it in a trouble ticket. Oh, they're very busy. I think if Michael Berry has anything wrong with his stuff, it's the alarms go off.
Starting point is 01:06:25 That's okay. He makes more money than us. I mean, he's more important. No, you and I are just as important. is Michael Barry. No, no, we're not. No, we're not. Ask the bosses. So if we brought in any martini and said, who's more important? He would say, you and me together, we're a combo over Michael Barry. He would say Michael Berry is more important. Yeah, you and I, let's say we're on a, somehow we're on an I-Heart media boat trip.
Starting point is 01:06:48 And you, me and Michael Barry all fall into the water. And they can only save two. No, no, here's what I work. There's two life raps. Barry gets both of them. That's what I was going to say. You still, you see you coming off and steal my line. That's a real, a whole move. Sorry. I was going to say, you could only save two of us. They would still just save Michael Barry to be safe.
Starting point is 01:07:11 Is that true? I'll have to ask Eddie during the break. Oh, come on now. All right. And that's okay. It makes a lot of money for this company. And we get a little trickle down. Very little.
Starting point is 01:07:22 Trickle down economics. Eric and B. Oh, oh. Hello, Eric. Oh, hell now. This is going to be great. Hello, guys. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 01:07:29 Hey, I want to tell Dan Matthews to shut his bum ass up because yesterday I was listening to that other show y'all got in the morning with Sean Salisbury there. Yes, sir. And Dan Matthews said, made the comment, he made a demand that Jose Al-Tuvae never play second base again and then he started going historical on it. It said that just like when we got Jeff Kent
Starting point is 01:07:50 because Craig Biggio couldn't play second. Shut your bum ass up then. That's not why we did that. We did that because we got an MVP-level bat. Craig Vigio was a four-time. gold glover, you wash your mouth out with soap, Dan Matthews. My other thing is it. Shit your bum ass up, man.
Starting point is 01:08:05 Thank you. My other thing is this. Ain't nobody got time for that. And that's John Singleton coming back. There wasn't even an official campaign to bring back John. There was one to bring back Zach, and we can't do the right thing. Ain't nobody got time for that?
Starting point is 01:08:20 Who cares? He's on a minor league deal. Yeah, I think John Singleton's is very happy to be in Sugar Langue. Getting all worked up over a minor league deal. Ain't nobody got time for that. Yeah, unless you have, unless you're Pedro Leon because you don't want to lose that, that rifle spot in the Sugar Land Space Cowboys locker room. I don't know. I don't say Sugar Land Space Cowboys Hall of Fame. That's where he's heads.
Starting point is 01:08:40 That's already, that's already locked in there. Let's go to Mark at 1141 on 790. Mark, good evening or good morning or whatever this is. Hey, hey, hey, no, I ain't got no time for Iheart media. Hey, nobody got time for that. Hey. Hey, I call, I called like a month. and won tickets to the space cowboys.
Starting point is 01:09:02 I've called Jonathan twice. He's a nice guy and tries to help out. I've emailed some Marvin guy three times. I never heard back to him. And I still got no tickets. Oh. Ain't nobody got time for that. Ooh.
Starting point is 01:09:16 Oh, shame. Come on, Marvin. Marvin, you listen to the show. You like us. Starving for tickets over here, Marvin. Let's go. Come on. We got to get the man.
Starting point is 01:09:25 Markout, man. Help him out. Give him Marvin's cell number. You don't care. Marvin takes a lot of vacation. Yeah, Marvin doesn't work. Every time I email Marvin, he's on vacation. Marvin, let me tell him about Marvin.
Starting point is 01:09:34 He works four days a week. He gets a month off. He gets a month off. He works summer vacation. He's a teacher schedule. Thanks for the focus. Huck our brother, Mark. He's been going to a while.
Starting point is 01:09:44 I think he's going on a cruise around the world. I haven't seen him since we moved offices. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-7-90. You got more of shit your bum-ass up, but anybody got time to know. I'm going to ask Eddie Martini our market manager.
Starting point is 01:10:00 In no chance, no way, no how. He's going to lie to you. He'll give us the results next. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-790. We have the news at noon coming up. We have also, oh, believe it or not, today is highly Googledable.
Starting point is 01:10:16 I mean, well, yeah. That's what we talked about yesterday. I don't have to do it. You're doing it? I can't if you want me to. I'm not doing it? It takes about 10 minutes. Stop.
Starting point is 01:10:23 This is an easy one. 7-1-3-2-5-7-90 for shut you'll bum ass up. All right, I just checked our market manager, our vice president, a regional manager, Eddie Martini was not in, but our programming guys were in, Mark Sherman and Brian Erickson, and I posed the question to them. If there were two life rafts, Ross, myself, Barry, who would get them in the answer? I said that to me, I said that Barry would get both. They said, actually, it's never would be a possibility because Barry would never let us on the boat to begin with. He'd have to have his own project. That's true.
Starting point is 01:10:55 That's fine. I know I'm getting left. It's not a big deal. So, I mean, we wouldn't necessarily be in a boat pretty committed with Barry. I'm a strong swimmer. Yeah, I mean, he's in a charter jet and you and I are in a Cessna, single engine. What is? I don't know what that is.
Starting point is 01:11:07 You know what a single plane? You know, the ones that go like 8,000 feet up and it's high as they go. Okay. You know, those little sink. Like a crop duster? No, you know, single, like you go to a little private air space. You know, a little private, small air, like over to hooks and Tomball. Watch those planes take off.
Starting point is 01:11:23 Meanwhile, he's in the big, in the Lear jet. That's fine. I mean, he's earned it. Is that a great career? Way more famous. It brings in way more revenue in ratings than we do. Yeah. What did I say that was inaccurate?
Starting point is 01:11:41 No, no, no, no, no, no. I'm just, no, I'm just going, yeah, I agree with you. He's got 140,000 followers on Twitter. How many are bots? None. I don't believe that at all. There's no bots on Twitter? Are you kidding me?
Starting point is 01:11:57 I cleanse my bots. Everything's real. 140,000, huh? I'm going to look at the same. I don't go see many I've blocked that are his followers. 713-212-5-790. Jason and Kingwood. Jason, what's the matter with you?
Starting point is 01:12:17 Matt, how long have you lived in Kingwood? Since 2010. And before that, like 1990-29-25. I've been here for two and a half years. And what I do not have time for is losing power every other week. Like every Every two weeks We have an outage that is anywhere from four hours
Starting point is 01:12:40 To eight hours To 12 hours There's no explanations behind it They don't give me any updates I am on the verge of selling my house Because of that I cannot deal with it And I don't know how you have for so long
Starting point is 01:12:53 Well that's why you're going to get a Genorak standby generator From quality home products of Texas my friend Man and wait six months for them to come and install No no no I'm going to have one to them I'm going to have lunch with them tomorrow's a matter of fact Jason, I'll take care of you.
Starting point is 01:13:06 I'll give you the old sports empty hookup. Okay. Okay. We'll see how that works. It should work. Thank you. You don't trust me, do you? It doesn't sound like there was a whole lot of trust.
Starting point is 01:13:16 It sounded like he was telling you to shut your bum ass up without saying it. 7-1-3 quality. Come on now. Yeah, don't worry. I'll take care of you. You guys, if you guys want to generate it that bad, I'm going to talk to the owner tomorrow as a matter of fact. I got a lunch in the woodlands with them.
Starting point is 01:13:31 Hope they're mine. I'm going to go look at how many bots Barry's got on his Twitter account here. Let's take a look here. Oh my gosh. Will you leave him alone? 7-13. It's not 100,000. He's got more than you.
Starting point is 01:13:41 Sorry. Damn, he does. He got a lot of followers. You're so weird. I'm not weird. I'm just taking a look. Just want to see what's going on. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:52 There's some bots in this group. At B-L-O-O-D-M-3-Ridion. Yeah. Blood Meridian? That sounds like a word. Does not. What? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:03 at J-U-R-A-R-2-7-2-1-1-3. Okay, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. The thing is a list of fully loaded with bots. Yeah, okay, man. All of them are bots except for a thousand. You've got more followers. I'm glad you said that. You're more popular, more famous,
Starting point is 01:14:20 and way better than Michael Barry, Matt. No, I talk show-wise, we're mono-a-m-m-a. What does he do that we don't do? I really want to hear this. I think it's because he speaks politics. Yeah, I was going to say, his is a much more grandiose topic, but in terms of the mechanics, we do a great show here. Yeah, we do do a great show here, Matt.
Starting point is 01:14:41 We just don't, sports is just not as big of a group as politics. That's it. That goes out saying. Even the number one national show doesn't have nearly the listeners that Clay and what's his face. Was it Buck Sexton? Is that his name? That's over there on it. Is he still on there?
Starting point is 01:14:57 They're still together. Yeah. Oh, okay. I thought somebody said there was, was there friction? I don't think so I don't know I mean Frictions in haul
Starting point is 01:15:04 and oats Well they don't talk to each other anymore No they don't That's not friction That's split That's Splitsville Millie and Vanilli
Starting point is 01:15:12 Don't have They had friction Well they're both dead Aren't they Or is a Millie I think one of them is dead I thought both of them Oh
Starting point is 01:15:20 They both rest in peace I don't know All right let's go Uh Geo on 790 Hi Geo What's the matter with you Hey what's up
Starting point is 01:15:29 What's up man What's up Rob? What's up, Jonathan? So, can you guys hear me good? Yes, sir. The phone line that you're on is working. Okay, perfect, because that's what I want to call in. I as a loyal listener for this show for many, many years now,
Starting point is 01:15:44 and I know there's a lot of us out there. You know, sometimes we wait, you know, 10, 15, 30, even sometimes an hour to get on with you guys, right? And sometimes when we get on, you know, something's wrong with the phones. You know, and even sometimes when Joe's spotter calls and you guys got, I guess, there's something wrong with the phones. Now, whoever's in charge over there of technical issues, the group of people who handle the IT,
Starting point is 01:16:08 I wanted to say to them, shut your bum asses up and we don't have time for technical issues as far as the phones because we're trying to get on and enjoy the show. Shut your bum ass up, man. Thank you, Gio. Ain't nobody got time for that. I won't be sending that air check to IT. I send them the blippy phones.
Starting point is 01:16:25 We might believe you, but we ain't going to say anything about it. Hopefully they'll listen, Joe. Jay, you'll know in the next handful of days if the IT department cares about this little sports radio station we handle over here. Yeah, we'll see. If you hear the blips, you know they don't care. Well, I got an email back. They asked for the phone number, so I don't know if they'll be calling in. Okay, well, good.
Starting point is 01:16:44 Thank goodness they weren't. Hold on hold them. That would have been an ugly way to. Maybe they would have fixed it. Hold on. Look, it's not for a lot. I think it just comes with the territory being on web-based phones. I don't know what they can do.
Starting point is 01:16:55 So the web has done a lot of amazing things for us, right? Yes. But this is not one of them. Correct. What is another thing that web has done well for us? No, I'll tell you this. Inciting violence? I do like the web because my daughter's on a cruise right now.
Starting point is 01:17:11 Yes. And she is talking to us and video chatting through the web. Now at the middle of Caribbean right now. So that's a win for the web. She's on a cruise? Yeah. Without her parents. Yes.
Starting point is 01:17:21 She's with a couple of girlfriends and their dad. So yeah, they're doing their thing. Okay. And so that's kind of nice. That web is working out that way. The web has helped us out when it comes information. Do you trust these people? I would hope so.
Starting point is 01:17:33 Yeah, I sent them off. Okay. Now you got me all nervous. I don't know. I'm just worried. Don't worry about her. She's a grown girl. I hope she's okay.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Yeah. I'm going to Hawaii next year. Good. Oof. And you are making nice money. I'm trying. Yeah. I'm going to Freeport.
Starting point is 01:17:53 Freeport's lovely this time of year. Why don't you go to Bay City and hang out with Eric? I'm good. Spend many quality days with him. You know, I've never been to Bay City before my life? Driven through? Or where is it? No, exactly.
Starting point is 01:18:07 It's on the coast, isn't it not? I don't know. Like Brassus Port? Sure. Bay City. I think as far south as Galveston, but I don't think I've gone like... Maybe I've been through there around the trying to get to Bolivar. You've been to Freeport before?
Starting point is 01:18:21 Trying to get to Bolivor. If you go around if there's a lot of traffickers. You run to Bolivor? Yes, absolutely. Nice place? Oh, forget it. Forget it. Why do I do this?
Starting point is 01:18:30 It's fine. Is it a Burger King of Peninsula? If Galveston is the Burger King, Oh, geez. Might be more of the jack-in-a-box. Can I tell you that I got a Burger King hamburger the other day? You did? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:43 How was it? First of all, it was cheap. Was it your first choice? No. But it was on the way there. But I got the job done. And it was close. It was a small hamburger.
Starting point is 01:18:50 Just like Galveston. With cheese, an onion ring and some barbecue sauce on it. They called a rodeo burgers. It's two bucks. It wasn't bad. I used to get the rodeo burgers. Rodeo burgers back in the day used to be 99 cents. Rodeo burger can fill your belly.
Starting point is 01:19:01 I would be pulling up like crazy on them rodeo burgers. Maddie? It's like, you know what, Ross? You want to go on and date Scarlet Johansson. But they're not always around for you. You've got a limited budget. It's convenient. It gets the job done.
Starting point is 01:19:15 Yeah. Galveston. So you are going to go and if you're looking for Scarlet and you need and you... Exactly. You're looking for Turks and Kikos and you end up with Galveston. Oh, you're going to say it with somebody else? say a female. Oh, like a...
Starting point is 01:19:30 I don't know. Most celebrities are attractive, so this would be a tough one to come up with. Who's a mid? Don't even... Just go to break. All right. You get yourself in trouble.
Starting point is 01:19:38 Yeah, I was going to say, I don't want to hear anybody's feelings. Not celebrities would care, but, you know. All right, 1158 on Sports Talk 790. The news at noon is up next. Astro, you know what we're going to do? We're looking for Warriors. Not Golden State.
Starting point is 01:19:52 Just good old-fashioned after Warriors. We'll have it for you to start the news at noon here on Sports Talk 790. This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Does Scandal have any other hits? Do you want to hit wander? Well, the band is scandal, fronted by Patty. This is how I imagine the 80s.
Starting point is 01:20:16 They get out of high school, seniors, driving down to convertible. Uh-huh. Let me tell you something, Jonathan. You are 100% right. The convertible is open. You are on the main streets of Main Street in Flugerville, Texas. Ooh. Or Duncanville or.
Starting point is 01:20:33 Madisonville. Like I can't just be in Houston? You want to be out Maine sure? The convertible doubt? Oh, hell no. You won't make it. North Maine? No. Definitely now South Maine. North Maine, you got a puncher's chance, but South Maine, no.
Starting point is 01:20:49 Okay, just asking. Now, are you down Richmond Avenue in 1985 and okay? The Warrior was their only top 40 hit. Oh, okay. All right. They had two hits hit 41. Really? Could you name? them both?
Starting point is 01:21:04 No. Hands tied and beat of a heart? Beat of a heart might be familiar? Nope. Don't know it. I don't know. But again, I am 53 years old and I did not know until about 9.15 this morning that Patty Smith was the lead singer of said group.
Starting point is 01:21:18 I didn't even know the name. Again, when in doubt, you're a song like that, you think it's either Joan Jett or Pat Benatar. Hey, goodbye to you. Hey, play whatever this is, Jonathan. Goodbye to you? Scandal. I know this song. Yeah, yeah, this is a good one.
Starting point is 01:21:32 Or Smife. We will play this as a Was she from Ireland? She's a patisemite. When somebody leaves town, we'll play this. Like when a coach gets fired? We should play this when Bill O'Brien got tossed. You'll hear the chorus.
Starting point is 01:21:49 You'll know. No, I don't want to. How long as the chorus is going to take? We can bail out of this. Okay, all right. I was like, I don't know. We've got to get to the news at noon. All right, let's get to the news at noon.
Starting point is 01:21:57 Come on now. Goodbye to you. Goodbye to you. That's what it goes. Sorry. I mean, you know, though, that way. Thank you. Remember, I am a 13-time
Starting point is 01:22:08 Letterjack and winner in high school. Just refrain from any comments. I'm trying to be nicer. It's not working. I'm going to get you a planner. I didn't say a word. I know. Let's get
Starting point is 01:22:21 to the news at noon. Astros beat the Phillies won nothing yesterday. Didn't have a hit until the sixth inning. Shout out Yiner Diaz. Clean up hitter, Jake Myers, went over three. But he's still hitting 3. the seven. Framer Valdez, four walks, four hits, but no runs given up.
Starting point is 01:22:44 Only three strikeouts, but still pretty efficient. 92 pitches in the seven innings pitched. I mean, that's kind of how you draw it up if it were like a playoff series. Valdez for seven, a brayue for one, hater for one, shutout. Astros get the one-nothing victory and go for the series win today against the Philadelphia Phillies, Matthew. And Dan Matthews will have the on-deck show at 6 o'clock. Lifesaver, stepping in for me at the last night. You're going to work on Saturday, correct?
Starting point is 01:23:10 Yeah, so I took a Saturday for him, so it gets the weekend. Yeah, and I'll be hosting Friday show against the Cubs on the Kyle Tucker Ryan Presley Tribute Night. Great, and I'll have on deck for you tomorrow. And I'll be listening as I drive to the Woodlands. Appreciate you, Matt. All right. It'll be Zach Wheeler versus Colton Gordon. How are we feeling?
Starting point is 01:23:32 I think Zach Wheeler has the most quality starts in baseball the last calendar year? I think his ERA is significantly lower. than three. 2.6.1. Man, Phillies are good. Christopher Sanchez with 2.870 that's the day after. That's tomorrow with Hunter Brown on the hill. It'll be a tough series. Then you got the Cubs coming in town as well.
Starting point is 01:23:58 Now you said four and two, right? You don't have to a good start. Well, I mean, I got work to do. Yes. You have a little bit of work to do. One, the pitchers duel yesterday. Hopefully the Astros can get another one today. Also in the news at noon. Matt, your Houston Rockets, signing Fred Van Vleet. He had one year, basically $45 million, $44.9 million left on his deal. The Rockets and Van Vleet mutually agreeing to push back the option so that they could make the deal they made today, two years, $50 million. Here's what Sharm Sharania had to say about the deal.
Starting point is 01:24:32 Houston Rockets Guard, Fred Van Vleet intends to sign a new two-year, $50 million contract. track to stay with the Rockets. He's going to have a player option in the second season in 2026, 27. And this essentially gives him five more million dollars than the team option that the Rockets have. So the Rocks are declining a $44.9 million team option for Fred Van Lee to give this two-year deal to him. And the Rock has negotiated this deal with Clutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. And they're able to land a deal that now gives the Rockets flexibility, gives him some comfort in having a two-year deal with a player option. And next off-season, there is going to be some more salary cap room across the league for Fred Van Bleeve.
Starting point is 01:25:18 So salary cap going up, maybe he could opt out in that. Do you think there could be a situation where the rocket said, you opt out next year? We'll take care of it. There could also be that there's more money available in the NBA. As Shams said next season, that maybe somebody will want to pay more than, say, $25 million for his services next year. So some flexibility. keep Fred. On both sides and most importantly, you dig yourself under
Starting point is 01:25:41 the 44.9 million dollars you're supposed to pay them this year. Yeah, I think they're under the first apron now. Of the tax. And maybe more money to spend on rockets broadcasting. No, I think they said they're looking to cut. Oh, I hope not. The word I heard was simulcast. Oh,
Starting point is 01:25:57 that's not nice. You know what that was rude. I'm just kidding. You know what, I'm sorry, Matt. That was just a joke. But I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'll write that down. Okay. We've got a long live. And that's your news and noon. By the way, John Heyman also literally just this last second just tweeted out about Jeremy Payne in long-term contract talks of the Astros. That's past tense.
Starting point is 01:26:22 Here's John Heyman. A crusty old SOB said a few minutes ago. Had been in serious long-term contract talks before his recent agent switched to Scott Boris, as I said on MLB network. Those talks are now on hold at least for now. Pena is second in MLB war behind Aaron Jones. judge. They were talking about a deal for in the range of $100 million, now on hold, basically confirming the reporting from Ari Alexander. When hearing of this, Scott Boris' belly laughing still to this extent of nonstop minutes and hours.
Starting point is 01:26:58 I would love for one day to be able to scoff at $100 million, man. So that's obviously, and again, deducing things here. Yes. Who would want to tell Scott Boris? I mean, who'd want to tell John Heyman and Ari Alexander such things? I don't know, Matt. Could it be the player?
Starting point is 01:27:19 Nope. Could it be Scott Boris? I guess he could. Maybe. Cooper Hummel? I don't think Cooper Hummel's going to be whispering about Jeremy Payne's future. I think Cooper Hamill's is happy to be on a 26-man roster right now.
Starting point is 01:27:31 Could also be the former representation that said, you know, we tried. Well, we got dumped. Five years of 100 ain't enough. It's not enough. It's not enough. even close enough, is it? Not for even a decent level starting short-should think so.
Starting point is 01:27:47 Did the audience tell us yesterday to relax about this, not to bring this up? Or was it just about... I mean, we're relaxed. Hunter Brown. Hunter Brown we can really chill out about, correct? I guess so. Yeah, this is Jeremy going 5-100 and ain't going to get it done. 5105, excuse me.
Starting point is 01:28:12 Mm-hmm. And this, and any negotiations you may have had with prior reparations, representation. You can just erase that off to Blackboard. They said, see you later. Yeah. They're like, delete your, delete that, you know, delete this chat. There's a new group chat. Oh, archive it. Scott Boris. Boris Corp.
Starting point is 01:28:28 D.B. Dana Brown. J.P. Jeremy Payne. You think they're in a group chat? Uh, no. Okay. But for the sake of our show, it sounded like it was a good idea. Hey, Dana, meet my new agent. I heard you were having trouble finding his number in the off season. Apparently you dissed him. New phone who dis.
Starting point is 01:28:44 I hope not. I hope not. And this isn't going to ruin what the asteros are going on right now. This is nothing to do about this season. It won't be an issue. It won't even probably be an issue next year. But in a couple of years, it's going to definitely be an issue. Especially if it continues to progress the way that he has.
Starting point is 01:29:00 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-790. We'll go to San Antonio, talk to our friend Caleb. We'll also get with you at 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. We'll get to the Rockets. and the Texans have announced their training camp dates. All that between now and two o'clock plus today's edition, a believe it or not, is highly Googled.
Starting point is 01:29:22 1215 on Sports Talk 790. 1222, Sports Talk 790. It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Texans real quick announcing their training camp dates. There'll be a handful of ones that are available to the fan base, which is the biggest concern for y'all. open practices will be I'm just going to throw them out
Starting point is 01:29:47 July 26, 28, 29, 30 August 1, 2, and 14. So you get them writing this down. Seven shots to go see your team out there. Seven public practices? That's not bad. That's pretty great. Yeah. Make sure you hydrate. Oof, I know. Now, they'll have, I don't know if it's
Starting point is 01:30:03 free water, but they'll have water available for you. They should have free water. I think they should cap. You go to these stadiums and the water bottles like $8-9? It's ridiculous. There should be a lot inactive. No more than $2. What's up? You know, I think that's great. I went to go see a concert at
Starting point is 01:30:19 Cynthia Woods and the water was $5 a pop. And fairly expensive. Yeah. Now, they also, I do believe they did have some water fountains, but they do water stations at like the like U of H does it, UT does it. They have water stations for
Starting point is 01:30:35 free water, which everybody should do honestly, but whatever. It's a profit off water. Yeah. Seriously, if you wanted to run for office and your number one platform topic was, I believe no one should pay more than $2 for a bottle of water, you would win. Okay. All right. Well, let's start the campaign. Uh-oh, they're going to dig into my past. Let's not do this. You know what? I know enough about your past. I think you're okay. You're not anymore than any other politicians out there. That's true.
Starting point is 01:31:10 You know, if he'd cheat on your taxes. Yeah, that's true. No felonies. No felonies. No drug arrest. You didn't say anything controversial per se in the show. The only person you really insult is me and Major League umpires. The worst. I'm talking about the umpires. Okay.
Starting point is 01:31:29 I was setting you up for that one, wasn't I? All right. 7.13-212-5-7. Howdy. Caleb, good afternoon. Good afternoon. I just wanted to see if you heard about the information Houston getting a professional softball team, I believe it would be with the Astros. I had not heard the news, Matt, have you? I was thinking maybe Joe Estrada could.
Starting point is 01:31:56 Joe Espada, he could coach them and tank that franchise. You're stupid. I mean, seriously, you waited 20 minutes for that? It took you all day to come up with that, Caleb, you're really stupid. We've got a really bad trick of caller one-liners, man. They're 46 and 33. That's really dumb.
Starting point is 01:32:23 Spencer Arrigetti's missed a month plus. Yordon Alvarez has not played since May 3rd. Hayden Wisniewski and Ronel Blanco have gotten Tommy John surgery. Christian Walker is not hitting his weight. Yonner Diaz has been terrible at the plate, and they're 13 games above 500. That's the best you can come up with? And we're going with he's tanking a franchise?
Starting point is 01:32:50 They won the division last year as well, by the way. And that's the best you can come up with? That guy was, he was locked and loaded with some horrific softball take. Softball joke. It's going to be hilarious. And thank God I've been a seasoned up radio professional and know this was coming from a mile away. I didn't even let him finish the call. I would like him to keep going
Starting point is 01:33:18 Sometimes it's funny to give them enough rope to hang themselves with Again, if you continue to call stupid crap We're going to give out your phone number over the air Because it's not fair that we have to take our show To listen to your bad crap We're going to call you at your house It's all right But I mean even the it's not even the joke
Starting point is 01:33:45 It's the premise of the joke Yeah it's though should I waste my time I mean does that guy have a do it have a job Listen, the idea behind the joke is that Joe Espada is somehow bringing down the Astros. I got news for you. Joe Espada might win the manager of the year award. If they overtake the Tigers for the best record, they're three and a half out of that. It ain't impossible, Ross. And I'm not saying it's probable.
Starting point is 01:34:09 I would put it at a very, very low percentage. Its odds are going up every day. They keep winning. Yeah. I mean, we do not oppose humor on the show. No. We love it. We embrace it.
Starting point is 01:34:22 We thrive on it. Yeah. I look forward to it. But Jonathan, you're right. The last week of the amateur comedians calling this show, it's been really rough. And I believe in you people. Well, I don't believe in all of you,
Starting point is 01:34:36 but some of you had to believe in. It hurts my heart a little bit. Does it? Yeah. Because you and I could do a boring-ass four-hour radio show. We don't talk to anybody and communicate and interact with our listeners and get to know them.
Starting point is 01:34:51 And we could just go ad nauseum after topic after a topic just to listen to our voices, but we don't believe in that. But I get let down sometimes. That's okay, Matt. We'll regroup. It's like, you know what? It's like, you know what it is? It's like I let my kids go out a half hour past their curfew. But I say, you know, curfew is 1130. Okay, you can stay out to minute, but don't be a minute later.
Starting point is 01:35:14 They're coming home with 1215, 1220. I'd lose faith in my children that way. Not that I didn't even have curfews anymore. So is Caleb in San Antonio is like your child. Well, I mean, he's San Antonio. They're going to be a little bit brain deprived to begin with. Okay. I'll take your word for it.
Starting point is 01:35:30 I got no issues with San Antonio. Oh, I do. San Antonioans? Yeah, I mean, there's two things in life I hate. Stereotypes and Spurs fans. Because they're Cowboys fans. They are really good. You know, that is a double dip.
Starting point is 01:35:43 That's what San Antonio is. It's Spur slash Cowboy fan. Just imagine. Imagine having your, if you have a daughter, and your daughter says, I've met my dream boat. he treats me nice he's got a good job he's educated he wants to build a family
Starting point is 01:35:59 you go that's great is he like sports oh he loves sports and then he and then he says he's a huge spurs and cowboys fan what if Carly came home with that to me I think you'd be okay are you sure yeah you didn't say anything you wouldn't be asking for tickets
Starting point is 01:36:16 you're not intimidating any boyfriends oh I think I am maybe the brothers might the brothers would definitely 7-1, 3, 2 212.7.90. Just don't be that guy. Rossi, there's a Twitter account called Legion Hoops. Do you believe in them okay? Tell me. Help me out. You love aggregators.
Starting point is 01:36:34 Yeah. But, I mean, is it decent or not? Let me see. Got 883,000 followers. I'll tell you if I have them muted or not. I don't. So they must be okay. Okay. So they haven't wronged me yet. If you wrong me once, I mute you. That's how it goes. Real quick before we get back on the phones.
Starting point is 01:36:51 and I think we've just got word from our IT department our phones are fixed. Hopefully we got no explanation. I just said it's been, you know what I messed up? They sent me a response like, hey, let us know what phone number it is. We'll try to call. Do some testing. And I was like, oh, well, it hasn't been happening today, but it has been happening the last couple of weeks.
Starting point is 01:37:13 Maybe they took to me saying, oh, it didn't happen. They resolved. Yeah, that's exactly what it was. They literally said, ain't nobody got time for that. Like, I understand they're busy. And this is outsourced. We don't have local people. So they're dealing with a lot of tickets all day, I guess.
Starting point is 01:37:28 I mean, just a too-minute explanation. Like, hey, this is just how it's going to be. Just something. Some courtesy would be cool. Just suck it and enjoy them. Yeah, just tell me to half off at least. So this Legion Hoop says, Cooper Flag, by the time he reaches 32 years of age.
Starting point is 01:37:42 Okay. He's going to, you know, he'll be the number one picking the NBA draft. I know we will not get another NBA draft conversation call today. And that's fine. I'm okay with that. It's fine. Rookie deal, $62 million. 62 million.
Starting point is 01:37:52 If he plays up to expectations, his first contract can be a supermax contract of 30%. Okay? Whatever that means. 30% supermax. So his next contract can be worth $359 million. That's what Shaggill's Alexander's about to get with Oklahoma City. Yeah, a rookie extension.
Starting point is 01:38:09 Yeah. Then if he continues to perform at an all-leet level, he can make a 35% bonus supermax contract extension that would give him $509 million. dollars. So Legion Hoops added L's all together and said, if he performs up to expectations a 1-1, by the time he's 32 years of age, he could have made, he could make $1 billion playing in the NBA. That's without endorsements or anything else. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:38:39 One Billy. Good for him. First of all, good for him. Second of all. Number one. Get your kids on a basketball court as fast. Oh yeah, easy. Just raise kids to be six foot 10 and freakishly athletic. I mean, so easy. With handles, block shots, yes, hit a three, feathery touch.
Starting point is 01:38:58 A little bit of a post-up defensive game. Yeah. And hit the mid range. Easy peasy. That's it. And you, if you follow that formula, your kid is going to make one billion dollars. That's great. And remember, it's not where you're from, because you know where he's from, don't you? No idea. Maine. Not a basketball hotbed. Okay. Well, again, I will say, if you think about how much. much he's making. Think about how much the owners are making. Oh, I'm not besmirching anybody.
Starting point is 01:39:26 I'm sorry, the governors. No, they're owners. It's silly. But yeah, one billion dollars. And he's 18. So in four, think about what you've done in your life. Going from 62 million to a combined one billy in 14 years. Good for him. I was just curious and looked up the highest earning NBA players of all time. You could probably guess the top three.
Starting point is 01:39:53 One is, one is easy. I think. Michael. Oh, no. No, no, no. Oh, you know, because I'm thinking 90s. It's all recent. All in the last, what, 10 years.
Starting point is 01:40:02 Yeah, this is not inflation adjusted. You're telling, uh, LeBron James. Yes, is one. Okay. And you're telling me who the next couple are. And then the next two, you can guess. Are they in the league right now? Yes.
Starting point is 01:40:17 And they're all-time greats. Durant. Is two? Hardin. Hardin is four. Oh, I'm right around around. Yeah. Quile Leonard?
Starting point is 01:40:33 Quile Leonard's ninth. I'm going to say it. You're going to kick yourself. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. I told you. Active and all-time great.
Starting point is 01:40:41 Active, all-time great. What conference? I know you know it. Western conference. Yokej. Stefan Curry. Paul George, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Dame Lillard,
Starting point is 01:40:58 Coilenter. Bradley Beale is the 10th highest earning basketball player of all time. All time. And by the way, the sons told him we want to trade you. He said no. And they're like, well, we may just buy you out. Wow. You're going to buy out all that money?
Starting point is 01:41:16 I guess. Crazy, isn't it? Let's talk to Ryan and Montgomery. Ryan, good afternoon. Afternoon, gentlemen. How are y'all doing today? We're wonderful. Thank you for asking.
Starting point is 01:41:29 I feel stupid or having listened to Caleb. I know. How do you think we feel? I'm like, I'm drooling on myself. I accidentally hung out when Drill hit the end button on my phone. I apologize. Let me tell you something. Brian, hold on a second.
Starting point is 01:41:41 May I ask you, how old you are and what do you do for a loving? I'm 33 and I am a home repair project manager for Habitat Free Manor. Okay, well, first of all, that's a great chance. It's a great cause. Number two, I want to apologize to you. Will you please accept my heartfelt apology for wasting your time for a minute? Absolutely, sir. I appreciate the apology.
Starting point is 01:42:01 It's not needed. No, but it really is genuine. And I just, because I, I tried to, we try to do a radio show that involves everybody, and that does include the nut jobs. And so he's a nut job, and that's fine. But it is what it is. Caleb will not be able to call the show without me giving out his phone number. And we'll call him and make his life hell because I have called listeners before.
Starting point is 01:42:21 And I live to antagonize them. So just remember, we have your phone number. Ryan, the floor is yours. Continue on, please. Oh, I just wanted to say Caleb's a dumbass. And if we get a hockey team before a soft, if we get a, a softball team, professional softball team before a hockey team, I'm going to be so unbelievably aggravated.
Starting point is 01:42:39 Are you, are you an H.L. The Houston guy, is that who you are? Are you one of the groups in that group? I can make this story very quick if you want to hear it. Take your time. So before I did this, I used to work for a company where we would go to places after hurricanes for like disaster relief, right? So the biggest job I did is I spent like a year in Fort Myers, Florida.
Starting point is 01:43:02 You couldn't live there after Hurricane Ian because it was trashed. So I lived in Cape Coral. And right there, it was in the heart of, like, Tampa Bay Lightning fans. And so my wife came over for Thanksgiving because I couldn't go home. And we went to a Tampa Bay Lightning game and absolutely fell in love. And so I'm a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, but that allegiance can be broken if we get a team here. I'm all on board with that. But no, NHL, it's a wonderful game experience.
Starting point is 01:43:31 and I think Houston, if we had a real team where we could play in a nice arena like Toyota Center, if they want to do that or if they want to build something new, you would put asses in seats all day long. It would be fun. It's a great time, and I really hope it happens. Ryan, thanks to the phone call, safe travels, and good luck with all with the Habitatu for humanity. I lived in Minneapolis for three years, Ross. I love going to Minnesota Wild Games.
Starting point is 01:43:56 How many did you go to? Five a year at least. Wow. Yeah. What was there a credential? Some credentials, some with family. The kids love it too. Free tickets to work. Well, the radio
Starting point is 01:44:06 company station I worked for was a minority owner of the team. So we got tickets. That's nice. You don't begrudge me for that, right? I don't know. I begrudge you at all. Okay, I just want to make sure. It's free, give me three. Really enjoyed it. Never really learned much about it. I still want to go to a game. I went to
Starting point is 01:44:24 Arrow's games. I loved Arrow's games. By the way, for all you, NHL and Houston fans, you know, I always have the weirdest dreams? Oh, no. I had a dream about a week ago. I didn't even mention it to you. It was sports related that I was thrown into doing a broadcast.
Starting point is 01:44:37 A hockey broadcast? They're like, I don't remember every part of my dream, but it was X, YZ announcer is sick. We need to do a broadcast. It was a national game of the week broadcast. It wasn't just like doing a local Houston team
Starting point is 01:44:49 or winning a Jets game. It was like, we need you to do the NHL and TNT, and I'm like, I don't know the vernacular. I don't know the rules. But I wasn't going to turn down a national opportunity. Okay. Did you do the game or did you wake up? And then you got hit in the head with a puck.
Starting point is 01:45:04 I woke up. Oh. I wake up because the dogs are always barking and yelling and stuff like. That always cost me finishing my dreams. I was been storming a lot too. That's right. That's part of it. Why are we getting thunderstorms like every night?
Starting point is 01:45:16 What the hell's going on out here? That's a very good thing. Ain't anybody got time for that? My water bill says I got plenty of time for that. Okay. Your grass is looking good? Grass is lush. Sending Cam Thomas out there to cut the grass?
Starting point is 01:45:28 Don't bring that up either What you should Well Since you poke the bear Let's go No no it's okay Time for a break No two things
Starting point is 01:45:39 I don't want to hear it I'm sorry I don't want to get in trouble With your son No no no no Not my son's fault There were two things The wife wanted a
Starting point is 01:45:46 A housekeeper Every week To clean the house And I didn't want to do Yard service So we have a yard person And we have a housekeeper That's what you have sons for
Starting point is 01:45:56 man I was cutting that grass back in my day I just got grass back in the day edge not so much I'm doing edging I'll do a yeah did you ever have an edger that had like the little the white wire that would always come out and wrapped up and it would then snap into 40 different pieces and screw it up
Starting point is 01:46:17 if you weren't winding it correctly I wasn't wanting it correctly so that's why I said I'm not going to add that frustration in my children's life I haven't Oh, it's character building. Builds character. Didn't character build me.
Starting point is 01:46:29 It pissed me off. Part of the reason why I'm as aggressive as I am. Okay. Just saying. 1243 on Sports Talk 790. Believe it or not today. Highly Googled. Okay.
Starting point is 01:46:43 All right. 1249 on Sports Talk 790. Real quick, the Texans, one more on the training camp, I thought was interesting. So they're going to have training camp starting here on Wednesday, July 23rd. They will practice. here for two weeks. Then they will take their practice to West Virginia
Starting point is 01:47:02 for four days. Then they'll go from there to Minnesota to play one of their preseason games. Okay. I'm sure there is a reason to it, but I would think that if you were going to go away for training camp, you would start your training
Starting point is 01:47:20 camp away so you guys could really brohanging and all that kind of stuff. I'm interested as to why they would start in here. Houston, then go to West Virginia to go hide. Are they going to the Green Brough? They're going to the Greenbriar. Okay. Maybe they got a good deal. The Green Brough.
Starting point is 01:47:35 Maybe midweek rates are low. They got a package deal? Well, I mean, I really don't know. All inclusive? Isn't there a casino over there, too? There is, yeah. I've never been there. Let's go to the Green Barre. You know, Mike Dantone's got a house.
Starting point is 01:47:49 Oh, yeah. He's West Virginia's finest. Yeah. But I'm, I mean, I mean, really serious for second, why would you pack everything up and go hide for four or five, not hide, but you know, get away for, I mean, I guess the only, the number one thing I would think of probably would be weather, but
Starting point is 01:48:05 you tell me, August, 45, 6, 7 is going to be just as hot as July 23 through all the way to July 30th. I mean, do they truly think that their current training facility is not up to far? No, because they're going to be there for two weeks. That's what I'm say. I don't. I, you know what? I
Starting point is 01:48:21 just don't get it. We'll have that tomorrow 1130, but I Yeah, we'll be talking about the Greenbrier in the Houston, Texas training camp. I mean, kudos to whoever is. I mean, that's Cal and Hannah don't have to do that. They can take care of the folks. They could say, you stay in Houston, Texas. We'll get you guys, you know.
Starting point is 01:48:41 Maybe they're trying to get their ratings up. Weren't they bad as far as the, like, the anonymous NFL players poll? I didn't think there was anything that was overly bad. I can't remember. But, you know, and I guess you could probably also say maybe you break up the monotony of training camp by just going away for a few days. But you're still practicing. I mean, the green bar,
Starting point is 01:49:02 I've never been in the green bar, but I hear it's nice. I hear it's lovely. They were going there years ago, and then they stopped. Yeah. Well, you're right. It looks like the,
Starting point is 01:49:11 the Texans got a, got an A or a B minus on everything. Yeah, I don't think there was anything that was running room. Trust because there was something that was really bad, we would have been a three-day topic on the show. Ownership got an A.
Starting point is 01:49:22 Well, of course. And, you know, but maybe, maybe Hannah's got, there's like a state sale up there. You think Hannah wants to go up there? Oh, Hannah's going to be there. Are you kidding me? She's picking up the tab with the green bar.
Starting point is 01:49:34 She will definitely be there. They got a B minus on treatment of families. Oh, that's how, dude, B minus is what. That's the worst grade they got on anything. So basically the family rooms. They're like team travel, coach, ownership, weight room, training staff, et cetera. So basically the family room sucks is what they're saying. Maybe they don't give them good tickets.
Starting point is 01:49:54 They put them in the nosebleeds? You got the best seat that says. 600 can buy. You're all right over there? My headset's all screwed up. I got to give me some... No, those are $9 ones. Can you buy me?
Starting point is 01:50:05 I have some earphones, and I'll get you a day timer. You want some like these? Yeah. I'll get them for you. Right now. All right, let's do it. Bamazon.
Starting point is 01:50:13 All right, Amazon is your friend. No, I got a Bamazon, get care for my birthday, so I'll do it myself. Okay, I'll send you the link. Thank you. So, yeah, so just when you get comfortable in your training camp, you're going to pack everything... You know, really, I feel bad for us as equipment managers.
Starting point is 01:50:27 everything is at their facility. The helmets are in this right spot. The pads, the washing machines, and then they're going to go to a hotel for four days. It's good for them. Probably costing a pretty penny. They're taking care of their players. Maybe they want to get from all this media that's hounding everybody, you know?
Starting point is 01:50:47 This Texans media. Oh, that Texans media, they're ferocious over there. You know what? I'm going to be better. Hey. You hear me? Nothing. I do.
Starting point is 01:50:58 I'm proud of you, Matt. I guess there could be some reason they're going to the green bar. I don't know what it is, but I'm sure we'll find out. I'm sure there'll be a story about it. And, you know, again, kudos to them. They don't have to do that. There's no requirement to go run away somewhere. And the Cowboys still go to California.
Starting point is 01:51:14 Do they now for the first few weeks? And that's what I was saying is usually when you travel, you start that distance and then you come home for the last few weeks. It's kind of weird that you would do it in the middle of it. But to each is though. Let's talk to Colby in Baytown at 1254. Colby, good afternoon. And it's good to talk to you.
Starting point is 01:51:34 Look, okay, so I've been seeing a lot lately about the Kevin Durant trade. Look, I'm honestly very excited for Kevin Durant to come back to Houston. He's coming home to where he went to college and all that. But here's my thing. We have a lot of people out there who are saying Kevin Durant is coming to Houston. They're going to win a championship now, or their championship caliber kind of like that. My thing is, is Kevin Durant. is just one piece to a championship.
Starting point is 01:52:04 I think that we have a lot of players on our team, like Shingoon and Van Fleet, who just got that deal, who can also come in and be a supporting cast, too. And that's like, that is one of the biggest things that is bothering me right now, is Kevin Durant is not the solution to our problem. But there's no problem, I would say, but he is not the only thing to, help us win a title. It's a team effort. So I got to say this right now, to the national media, to ESPN, to everyone else, you know, saying, oh, well, the Rockets, this and this and this and this, Katie, Katie, Katie, shut your old bum ass up. Okay, thanks, Colby. I mean, my thought is it's not
Starting point is 01:52:49 the solution to, it's an enhancement to. This team did win 52 games last year. This team was a number two seed. This team has got plenty of talent. But Kobe, to be fair to the national media, and to fair to anybody that would be talking about it, whether it's local or national, there weren't a lot of folks that thought that the Rockets pre-Cevident trade were going to be a title contender.
Starting point is 01:53:14 Because there was some hesitancy about whether or not this current group could do it. Kevin Durant puts you in that group. Not just me saying it, not just Sports RV or the national folks. Las Vegas, say what you want. Yeah. Just skyrocketed the rocket's chances to winning the NBA championship. Pre-playoffs, they were 80 to 1.
Starting point is 01:53:34 And I thought that was good value, so I lit 20 bucks on fire with that. I hope you had it on that, by the way. I didn't. No, I'm talking about for this upcoming. See, they lost in the first round. Oh, I thought you about this. Pre-playoffs, they were 80 to 1. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:53:49 This upcoming year right now, they are 9 to 1. That's Kevin Durant. That's not Albert and Schengen growing up. That's not Fred Ben Bleed signing. Odds don't mean everything. but that means something. Certainly not futures odds. I think point spreads mean a little bit more than
Starting point is 01:54:05 futures odds. The future odds are all off all the time. But that just gives you an idea. You went from 80 to 1 to 9 to 1. No, he's not the, I don't think Kevin Durant, if Kevin Durant scores 25 points a game and dishes out 12 rebounds, and everybody else
Starting point is 01:54:26 doesn't perform up to what they did last year, this team will not be a championship contender. I mean, Alpe's got to get better. Thompson's got to get better. And they will. And Jabari's, I mean, you still have to fix, not fix, you have to figure out where the, who's going to pick up the Jalen Green production? Because Jalen was productive for most of the year.
Starting point is 01:54:46 Yeah, and it'll be Kevin Durant. And Jalen Green is at better, at this point in their career, is a better defender than Kevin Durant is, so you'll have to shore it up, but you've got guys that can do that. That's why we'll see who starts. Whether it's Jabari or Tari or whoever, you're going to have a good defender. and there you're going to have good team defense. And as we alluded to a few minutes ago, there is now a $14 million
Starting point is 01:55:05 mid-level exception available for the rockets to use. Get some more help. Who that may be? I don't know. But it may not be a guy that's going to stop in your tracks, but it's going to be somebody
Starting point is 01:55:15 I think we know, right? We'll see. I remain bullish on going, wow, that's a nice pickup. All right. I want you to be right. I don't think that they're going to take the $14 million to give it to Jeff Green.
Starting point is 01:55:27 I mean, you know. But I hope not. be somebody that they know. Maybe a former teammate. Or maybe Ross, they swing for the fences. Explain. As we start the final hour, the Matt Thomas show at Ross next on Sports Talk 790. All right, it is 102 on Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 01:55:53 This is our final hour of the day. Tomorrow way of a shorter show. We've got 10 to noon. And then we've got Astros baseball at 12 o'clock. We'll have, I just don't get it at 1130. Brian McTagger will slide into the Astros. on deck, which you'll be hosting tomorrow for a 110 first pitch between the Astros and Phillies to close out the three-game series. First things first tonight.
Starting point is 01:56:13 6 o'clock for the on-deck show with Dan Matthews. Game two between the Astros. Colton Gordon will throw for the local nine today. Astros, a season high, 13 games above 500. I'm glad you didn't mention Zach Wheeler. I wanted to bury that. Yeah. Because I'm a little nervous to be brutally honest with you. Minus 160 for the old Phil's today. All right. So I tease something about if you really want to swing for the fence. The Astros still have a lot of draft capital between themselves, Phoenix, and I believe Brooklyn in the mix, too. Yes.
Starting point is 01:56:47 Okay. If you wanted to really swing for the fence, train them a bunch of first round picks. Send them a couple players. See if Milwaukee will take it. Milwaukee? Yeah. Bucks. Yeah. The team in control of
Starting point is 01:57:13 Yanis Athentacompos' contract. Yeah. Fill them up with Janus Durant. Endless first rounders. They're going to want them in, or shingoon minimum. Then I can't have the conversation.
Starting point is 01:57:28 You're not going to give them either of them and you think you're getting Janus atentacompo? Oh, come on that. 30-year-old multiple-time MVP? Hold, hold, hold, hold. What if I gave them... I say, I don't like to throw in names in particular. You always say, man, it has to hurt.
Starting point is 01:57:42 Okay, you're right, it has to hurt. So if it hurts... What it seems? Shingoon and four first round picks. Probably going to take more. More to match a salary even. Because the buss have nobody now. They just traded a holiday too, huh?
Starting point is 01:58:01 Holiday was on the Celtics. He was on the Bucks before that. You're telling me, Shin'oon and four first runners wouldn't do it for Yannis. If you're telling me, you're telling me. I don't think so. Okay, what if I threw Whitmore and or Kim, Reed Shepherd in the mix? Four first rounds. What do I give you a fifth first round?
Starting point is 01:58:23 I don't even know. Is there a max? Is four of the max? Because it feels like it could be. Because nobody's giving away more than four than I know of. We have no more seconds, I don't think, because of the Rockets are doing. Yeah, they're really running. They gave five of them to Phoenix.
Starting point is 01:58:37 I think. I can't give up Tari or Jabr. Well, I don't want to do Can I back off this conversation? Shingun Jibari 4 first. Would you do it? No.
Starting point is 01:58:58 I can 4 first and no human being is better because I don't know what these draft picks are. I know who these human beings are. And I know what their abilities are. Okay.
Starting point is 01:59:10 But the reason why I would throw, you're bringing up Shangoon is because you're talking about big man for big man, right? I mean, I guess. I think of Janus is just a everything. But maybe, you know, he's tall.
Starting point is 01:59:22 But he's not like a back to the basket. No, no, no, no. But maybe this is a non-starter. Maybe they were like, we decided that Alperin is our guy. Alperin was untouchable in a Kevin Durant trade possibility. Alperin's not untouchable. Not for Yonis, certainly, to me. Janus?
Starting point is 01:59:43 Four-first? I mean, four-first and Alprim can't do it. I don't think they, I don't think they would take that. No lottery protection whatsoever. Maybe. Let's see. Janice has two more years left on his deal plus a player option.
Starting point is 02:00:02 Okay. If you're telling me no, you're telling me no. I mean, this, I can't do. You can't squeeze anything more out of me. I don't think they'd take amended for it first. I'll say that. What's up? I think we value the potential of Amin Thompson more than everybody loves Amin Thompson. But is Amin Thompson ever going to be multiple-time MVP
Starting point is 02:00:22 and defensive player of the year? the reason why a men Thompson Because Yonis is Hold on hold on The reason why a man Tom Because he's just starting his third year in the NBA Yonis has been the league of decade Yes
Starting point is 02:00:35 So if you think that Amin Thompson can groove a nice 12 to 15 year career And with maybe a few All-Star appearances in there And maybe all defensive player team And maybe an NBA defensive player of the year And he's progressed offensive
Starting point is 02:00:51 And again he's not an elite But got significantly better in year two than in year one that's the kind of guy you can build around. He's, yeah, absolutely. He's a building block. I love a man, Thompson. He's going to be a defensive player of the year, threat.
Starting point is 02:01:03 If Yonis was 24, I would then probably argue with you more to it. Okay, he's 30. And see, it's easy to get Durant because you didn't give, I don't think the Rockets in their mind thought we give up a lot. You're asking the Rockets to give up a lot to give up a men as part of that deal. Is Amin Thompson ever going to win defensive player of the year? Yes. We can argue that.
Starting point is 02:01:23 Yes, I can, I'm not saying he's probably, I'm saying, is there, is there, a viable case for it. Okay, is he ever going to win MVP? Well, it's a scoring league. I'm going to say no. Okay, since it's a scoring league, who's the last, did Gary Payton ever win an MVP? Yeah, I want to say yes.
Starting point is 02:01:42 In 96, I think when he had that big year. Okay. But typically speaking, your NBA scores. John says two, he didn't finish in the voting last year. He didn't qualify because what do you need? He had 67 games. Yeah, it's going to be 60. I thought it was 61, 62.
Starting point is 02:01:58 Oh, is it 65 or something? I don't remember. Go ahead. But he played 67 games, but he didn't finish any awards. He was hurt. The year before that, he was fourth and MVP, third, third, fourth, first, first. I think the youth and the excitement
Starting point is 02:02:13 and the potential for M.N. Thompson to be an absolute dog. You know, I can do this. I don't think I can project him as an MVP, but I could project him as a for all NBA first team. Maybe a little bit of a stretch. Haven then. He's young. How about first or second team?
Starting point is 02:02:30 How about, could you see a man Thompson being an NBA second team? I could see that. Sure, for sure. Maybe first even. Because I think if you're an all defensive play, that means you probably got a whole lot to your repertoire. I'm just asking you question. Last three years, Janus has been over 30 points for game.
Starting point is 02:02:44 Is Amin Thompson ever going to average over 30 points per game? I don't think that is... At 60% from the field. My men shoots 50% from the floor. Then shoot 60. Okay, but you know what I'm saying. And I also, his repertoire is not nearly as wide as Yonis, but Janus doesn't shoot three. Here's what Janus doesn't do.
Starting point is 02:03:03 That makes me a little nervous if I'm going to trade everything we're talking about. You are absolutely solid in your foundation. Shingun doesn't shoot threes. A man doesn't shoot threes. A man is not a great, I mean, Janus is not a great three-point shooter. In fact, he's regressed and doesn't even take as many as he used to. And he doesn't shoot free throw as well. It's a bad free throw shooter.
Starting point is 02:03:22 69% in his career. A man Thompson got better at free throw. was last year. He was around 75, right? Getting there. I have to go look. I'm just saying, I love a men too. But we're talking about the Greek freak here. All right. You know what? I mean, you know what, Ross, to answer your question, it hurts too much. I'm pulling back. Goodbye.
Starting point is 02:03:42 Okay. New phone, who is? Lose my number. All right. Just, just, I just want to throw it out. Would you even make the phone call? I would think about it For sure Janus is one of the five best players on the planet Four first round picks
Starting point is 02:04:04 That can do a lot You have Kevin Durant and Janus How good are those picks But we always say that We said that about the Brooklyn picks And then they turned it out to be pretty good I'm not endorsing us I'm just saying
Starting point is 02:04:15 Just throwing something against the wall See if it sticks Okay Let's go to KJ in Cyprus At 11 on 790 Hi KJ This is your boys good
Starting point is 02:04:30 Yeah, where are you calling us from? He's like you're a mile away from us. It's not you guys. It's not a technical thing. But am I good enough for you guys to hear me? Fire away. Go for it. Okay, I want to give a little bit a different perspective in regards to this, Kevin Duran.
Starting point is 02:04:50 The reason why I say that. First and foremost, Tim, obviously, this football fans, a sports fan, that got to the point where we normalize getting big names to put on your team, and we consistently see example after example that that does not work. The last time that was successful, I want to say, was probably when it didn't work in the clipper, it didn't work with Philly. It didn't work.
Starting point is 02:05:26 It does not work when you get, just get a bunch of alphas and chemistry. The reason why I say as a player for years of your career, so I'm not, I'm not adverse with them getting rid of jail and dreams. What I do dislike is the fact that, let's get that guy, let's get champions, or all, you're walking. He added to Holiday and Derek Whitey.
Starting point is 02:06:34 So hold on, KJ, real quick. What are the Rockets doing? You're telling me they're not adding by adding Kevin Durant? That doesn't make any sense. This team, this team was going on. This team grew up together. They grew up through the draft. They grew up with Jalen Green and Jabari Smith and Amin Thompson and Tari
Starting point is 02:06:51 Easton. And they very slowly added their pieces. This is exactly what the rockets are doing what everybody else was doing. Worst case scenario. So what you have, Kevin Durant is off. bitch is he's not just going to be quote unquote a role player. A piece is a role player. That's more or less like...
Starting point is 02:07:58 Okay, so using your train of thought, Jalen Green stays, the rockets where all of a sudden were to go get Nas Reid. Nas Reid, Jalen Green, Alperin Shingoon gives you a better chance of winning an NBA championship than Kevin Durant does with
Starting point is 02:08:14 Alperin Shingoon and Amanda Thompson. Is that what you're telling me? You said, I'll ask this question. Outside of winning, the last time it happened, outside of when it happened, Go ahead. Well, they didn't have the championship team. Okay. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:09:04 The Celtics added Porzingis. Who else? I don't know. The Mavericks went to the finals. They added Kyrie Irving. Oh, go ahead. Sorry. When's the last time a team won the championship
Starting point is 02:09:27 when their leading score throughout the season scored only single digits and four points in the first. They were out in the first round. I mean, am I crazy? Are they on the cusp and then they just upset the apple cart? First round. Not the simple. not the Western finals, not the NBA finals.
Starting point is 02:09:45 They were out in the first round. And the fact is, it hurt to watch Jalen not perform in the playoffs. There were a lot of people in that Rockets organization that were rooting for Jalen Green. They gave him a new contract before the start of the season. They drafted him in the top five. I'm rooting for Jalen Green. Everybody did. I'm team Jalen Green.
Starting point is 02:10:05 But he let me down. They felt like they, I'm not saying I'm not putting words in her mouth, but they probably felt like we had a lot of faith that you could shake yourself of this and you didn't. And he is correct to say that there is a lack of patience. There is a win now or it's a failure. That's just kind of the nature of the NBA. And I get it trying to trust the process and all that type of stuff. And the Rockets could get better as a team.
Starting point is 02:10:26 But you're not getting better than Golden. I mean, Oklahoma City. I don't think you're better than Denver without making this Kevin Durantmoor. Just getting a year. I don't think you're better than Minnesota. Yeah. Just getting a year older and making a small change. I don't think it's over the top of Oklahoma City and Denver.
Starting point is 02:10:41 And hell, we don't even know what that. the Lakers are going to be disappointed. To win a championship, you need players that can transcend the best defenses. Nobody's stopping Prime Michael Jordan, a LeBron James, or even what Che Gilges Alexander, I mean, those types of player, like the alpha dog. Jalen Green proved to us, now was his first playoff taste, but he proved to us that he's not transcending. First round defense. It gets tougher as you go.
Starting point is 02:11:09 And I think the Rockets recognize that. 117, mega, 118, sports talk 790. We're way late, but the content was good. That's what we do, listen to the radio show. You listen for good content. We give it to you, I think. Good conversation, KJ.
Starting point is 02:11:22 Back in a minute. We were just debating whether or not the Rockets had a pick in the draft. I believe the answer is yes. I believe it's pick 59 or 60. It doesn't, it's super late second round. I know there was a report the Rockets would like to maybe kick the tires on getting back a little higher in the draft. I saw a tweet that that was one of the ones going to, but this is why you can. can't trust Twitter, I guess, that that was one of the ones going to Phoenix, but I suppose
Starting point is 02:11:45 I was misinformed, or I am misinformed. Well, you're misinformed in general. I just don't know if this particular case you're wrong or right. Yeah, I've looked at a bunch of websites. You may be right? I may be crazy. Yeah, it looks like they still have it. Yeah, that's fine. Lease accordingly ESPN's website. Is it 59 or it's 60? 59. And it's 60 player draft? Why does this have them listed as the last team? That's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 02:12:13 I'm a little confused. You know what? On ESPN, I'm super going to use. We'll get some more information. By way, we'll have a draft party tomorrow night too. Did somebody lose one as like an infraction or somebody? Somebody lost a second round pick? I can't remember.
Starting point is 02:12:23 No, we're not having a draft party. The Rockets. I'm talking about tomorrow. Nobody's having a draft party tomorrow. You can go see Adam and Adam out of the Rocket's draft party tonight. Yeah, I'll be there as well. I'm hosting a trivia contest. Oh, you will?
Starting point is 02:12:35 You are? Yeah. Do you have the questions? Yes. Really? Yes. Can I answer them? No.
Starting point is 02:12:42 Come on, I want one. It'd get mad at me. I don't want that. Oh, they would? Why would I give away questions on the air? Well, you would reward our listeners? You better get authorization. Yeah, I was going to say.
Starting point is 02:12:54 You're going to go back to Craig. I'm never asking you to do anything else. Madame Phil Sarphy. Can you host a couple of trivia questions? Sure, I can't wait. That's cool. I want the questions off air. If you're going to the TOTA Center,
Starting point is 02:13:06 tonight. You get on the floor like at 4.4.30 somewhere in that range, you can shoot basketball on the court. I mean, how many times you get to play on an NBA court? That's great. I think the trophies will be there. We'll get some shots up. Rudy's going to be there. Stevie Franchise going to be there. Oh, wow. Mucci's going to be there. You're going to post up
Starting point is 02:13:22 Moochie Norse? How tall is Mooch? About six foot. Yeah, I'm taller than him. I think by an inch. I don't know. Go look at listed height. Less accurate back of the day. He's listed at 6'1. So he and I are my mom. Mano-emano.
Starting point is 02:13:37 Oh, yeah. I got him minus 500. In a game of horse? I'm talking about odds. We're talking about points. Oh, dang. Horse? What's your go-to horse shop?
Starting point is 02:13:48 Behind the back? Granny style? Um, what is the go-to? SportsMT. Oh, turn around jumper, like Dream Shake. Oh, okay. Wow. You ask.
Starting point is 02:14:02 The MT shake. It's more like a rattle. So does shake. A little slow. How you, oh, I played so much basketball as a kid. Didn't translate to the court because I was fat. See, somebody just tweeted me. They traded 59 to Phoenix, but I'm looking at ESPN and it's on there.
Starting point is 02:14:18 I don't know. We're getting conflicting reports. You don't, I'll, I'll check in with a source. Is that fair? Okay, back to K. Do you want any more on the KJ? Look, Jalen Green hurts. But the energy, the buzz, the excitement.
Starting point is 02:14:34 Almost every NBA, Not that everybody, NBA analysts are right, but everybody that I do trust when it comes to a basketball mind says the Rockets did really, really well in this trade. Hey, Matt, real quick, man, I have a caller wanting to know, rise health information real quick. I just want you to do your thing. Jonathan, we need to have a discussion. Jonathan, something called timing. Wait to the break. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:14:58 We don't have to relay every message from the caller. But it's nice. I see you're trying to get a free plug. I see you working. You know, we'll get more fluid. it is. It's risehealth.com, two eyes. R-I-I-I-C-E-Health.com. E-D issues.

Like, I went to, when I got an old change last week, I googled the name of the company and found an online coupon of 15% off the old change. Good for you, man. Risehealth.com.
Starting point is 02:15:38 R-I-I-Z-E-Halth.com, use the promo code M-T-20 when you check out 20% off. Boom, shock on like a... Thanks, Matt. And you'd be ferocious. Like a tagger-rah. I gotta go. There you don't. You can go to rise-health.com.
Starting point is 02:15:57 Yeah, it's phone going. Okay. Hey, yeah, it's got to hurt. It hurts. But Kevin Durant's got a lot left in the tank. I just... First of all, I need to believe it, but I certainly choose to believe it. And other teams did, too.
Starting point is 02:16:12 Miami was willing to make some misdemean moves. Minnesota had the most attractive offer. Brooklyn was involved. Golden State tried to get him three months ago. Apparently the reason why? Not because he didn't like Dreamon Green. He didn't like Steve Kerr. But he wanted to be here. And San Antonio was also kicking the tires too. One just one team.
Starting point is 02:16:34 25 and 12. 50-40 shooting percentage. What's his free throw numbers? No, I actually dipped last year. like 83%. So he's like 88, 89. So he's 50, 40, 88. I'll take you.

Starting point is 02:21:21 The free Iheart radio app. This is Joe Spada. Listen to the Astros on your radio and on the free IHeartRadio app. Sports Talk 790 is your home for Astros baseball. Real quick, ESPN Bobby Mark says the funneling rockets in the second round do not have a pick tomorrow. This is Bobby Marks. that they would be giving up the 59th pick tomorrow. Two of them in 26, one in 19, in 2013. That came from Boston and one in 2013. So there you have it. Whether Bobby Marks is accurate, again, everything is July 6. But, yeah, I mean, again, I don't think we're going to be sweating with them with the rockets do at 59, even if they had the pick.
Starting point is 02:22:12 All right, before we get to a little bit of what Brian Bogos Civic said about the local nine, let's talk to a listener, 713-212-5-79. 713212-5-790. Let's go to Paul the Matt Thomas show. Paul with Ross. Paul, good afternoon. What's up, man? Matt, this is Paul. And Gallison, I called about three weeks ago. I was the one that called you a clown over the Archmanning deal. I'm calling back because of the, I mentioned in that conversation about the Rockets possibly moving up in the draft. This is before they. got to rant and you know I just hear y'all talking about singoon and thompson and you really nobody's you know untouchable and I mentioned in that conversation that I would really love to see the rockets move up and they still have enough I think to move up to four and five and get especially of sin go if you can get rid of sin goon and the number one pick is that not enough to move up to number four?
Starting point is 02:23:23 Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You're suggesting training Alperin Shangoon and a future first round pick for the number four pick in this year's draft? Yes, but I want the guy from Duke, the seven-footer. He is so athletic. He is going to go, he's going number one. He's not going number one. Cooper Flag is going number one. You're talking about Keppel? Concanipal?
Starting point is 02:23:53 Concanepal? Or no, the other guy. No, he's not seven foot. No, Malawoods. The seven foot, he's just... Yeah. He might be younger. He might be younger than Cooper Fagg.
Starting point is 02:24:03 He's only 18 or 19. You give him two years with Akeem, and he'll be... What if Akeem is busy, Paul? Oh, come on, man. He's worked with every big man they've had in the last few years. He would...
Starting point is 02:24:19 Too old. So you want a project over an All-Star. So you want an All-Star and the first-round pick for a guy that's going to be a two-to-three-three-year project? He's not a two-to-three-year project. And even if he is, look how athletic is. He's seven-foot. What's his wingspan? Seven-seven.
Starting point is 02:24:36 Seven-seven? Okay. He is athletic. He is more athletic than Singun. And he can probably shoot better in two years than Sin-Goon can shoot right now. He can't shoot outside of five feet. Look, I... No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 02:24:55 Let's move on. We got to cut bait because we're going to get to... There's Brian Bogusevic on the Astros... There's a pallet cleanser for you, folks. We're going to just cleanse ourself. There we go. I don't ever do that again, please. It's disturbing.
Starting point is 02:25:11 Here is Bogie earlier today talking about the Astros and our favorite cleanup here at least for one game yesterday. That, of course, was sneaky snake Jake Myers. Yeah, that was. that was a little unexpected showing up at the ballpark and looking at the lineup. I think it just kind of speaks to where the organization, where the coaches are at with, you know, some of the guys who've struggled early, right? Christian Walker, Yiner, those guys, they've been waiting for them to turn it around.
Starting point is 02:25:36 You know, we're going to be here in a couple days and it's going to be the halfway point. You know, at some point, your leash has run out. And when you're writing out the lineup every day, you've just got to take the guys that are swinging the bat the best. And I know, you know, your four or five hitters prototypically aren't going to be Jake Myers and Camp Smith, but they're both swinging the bat well. And you've got to get guys behind Pena, Parades-L-Tuve, who are going to potentially drive and run. Didn't happen yesterday, but, you know, it's not a terrible idea. It is interesting how the game worked out yesterday. Ranger Suarez, I mean, the ERA is about a one this month.
Starting point is 02:26:11 Frymberg gives you quality starts. You know, I don't know if today's baseball fan wants 100 of those kind of one-nose. nothing games, but I was in tune with it because I first of all appreciate what both guys did. And secondly, I wanted to see who was going to flinch first. And of all people, Cooper Hummel was the man to be the hero for the local nine last night. Yeah, I think, you know, if you're a true baseball fan, you really appreciate games like that because, you know, everything, you'd have to do everything well in a type game like that. It was obvious from, you know, the first couple of endings that that was going to be a low scoring game. So all of a sudden, you know, you've got to play good defense.
Starting point is 02:26:48 You know, you've got to run the base as well. You can't make a mistake pitch, you know, over the middle of the plate. You've got to really tighten down when there's runners in scoring position. And that's fun baseball to watch, in my opinion, when both teams have to be out of it. When you're a lot of times watching a 10 to 9 game, it can be a little bit sloppy and it just all gets kind of washed away with all the runs that are being scored. I enjoy a game like that. But, yeah, Major League Baseball doesn't want to see that every night. No. How did Framber do it yesterday where he was kind of avoiding disaster?
Starting point is 02:27:19 They've got on the base paths a lot through some, a few hard knocks, some of the walks, and that's what, nine, nine walks for Framber over the last couple of games, but every single opportunity presented itself and he came through and didn't let anybody cross the pay station for Philadelphia. Yeah, first of all, you know, he had really good stuff yesterday. His command wasn't as sharp as we've seen at times, but just the pure stuff to move in on the fastball. all, you know, the break on the curveball was all really good. And when you have that good of stuff, you know, you can just keep going to the well and eventually you'll be successful. But I think what was really important yesterday was he kept a really level head.
Starting point is 02:27:58 You know, he had a walk, I think, in each of the first three innings. There were a couple errors mixed in. So like there's a lot of traffic on the basis. And sometimes, you know, as a pitcher, you can get into those situations and you think, okay, I got to get nastier. I've got to go for the strikeout here. I've got to, you know, put a little bit more on the basis. this fastball and hump up a little bit.
Starting point is 02:28:16 He just kept his cool and kept making pitches. And when he does that, you're going to get ground balls. You're going to get double plays. You're going to get yourself out of the inning. And I thought he did a really nice job navigating some tough situations by keeping his head and not trying to do more and not making situations worse.
Starting point is 02:28:34 Brian Bogusevick with us here on Sports Talk 790 and the big series with the Phillies and the Cubs coming to town as well. Players and coaches and everyone will always say publicly, yeah, we want to win every game and we take them all the same. But how much truth is that as you as a former player? Like when it's the Phillies and Cubs coming in town, is there a little extra juice?
Starting point is 02:28:55 I think so, but I think it probably comes more externally. You know, you get there and there's a little bit of a buzz in the stadium. It's crowded. The fans show up earlier. You know, there's more stimulation from that standpoint. You know, guys know that they have to be on top of their game. You're playing a good team. You're playing a first place team.
Starting point is 02:29:12 You're going to see a ton of really good pitch. So guys can feel that, but it's not like it's, okay, now we're going to try harder. Now we're going to, you know, really focus on our scouting reports and, you know, dot eyes and cross-tees. That stuff is happening regardless. And I just think there's a little bit extra juice just because of the buzz that's in the stadium. But now, you know, it's, it really sounds cliche to say it's one of 162, but it really is. And especially this time of the year where you've got a bunch of games behind you. so you're kind of in the drag of the season,
Starting point is 02:29:46 but at the same time, you know, you're so far from the end where you're not really scoreboard watching or anything. So, yes, in the clubhouse, it's just one of 162, but yeah, you can feel the little bit of extra juice when you know that the fans are into it. That again was Brian Bogus-Sivik. You can catch him every Wednesday at 11 o'clock right here on Sports Talk 7-90. A friend of the show on Twitter at B. Connoisseur just said at SportsMT,
Starting point is 02:30:10 Paul must be drinking the Galveston water training Shingoon and a future first for the fourth pick is quite possibly the worst thing I've ever heard. That just made me flat out chuckle. An all-star and a first round pick, by the way. You're some doozies today. We've had some softball guy calling in. I mean, we tease because we care. We want you to call the show.
Starting point is 02:30:40 But remember, if it's really a whack job call, we're going to kind of call it out for it. Not that art takes, aren't whack job, takes over once in a while. We admit that as much. Believe it or not, highly Googledable about the NBA draft. If you want to play for a chance and some spectacular prizes. Well, you have to find a different show for that. We've got some decent prizes that are up next. 713-212-5-790 if you want to play.
Starting point is 02:31:03 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. All right, I think I know what's going to happen tonight with the Rockets when they have the 10th selection, which is really Phoenix. If the player is there, Ross, they're going to draft him they're not going to have a uniform for him and they're not going to make him put a cap on that's good
Starting point is 02:31:23 why don't they just make him put a Phoenix cap on I guess because the deal could fall through because the NBA would say no new new or maybe there's a he's got a passive physical or some sort yeah deal could fall through I guess potentially better not building up a lot of this stuff here all right
Starting point is 02:31:39 150 on sports talk 70 Do you know my wife prides herself of being a huge sports fan? She did not know that John Tesh created Round Ball Rock. Okay. I thought most people knew that, especially after the SNL skit. I know. She didn't. She's like, I learned something new every day.
Starting point is 02:31:58 I am generally excited about how NBC is going to do this NBA coverage. I think we're going to be in a good spot. If you're an NBA fan, I think you're going to see the big opens with the narration and the great sound effects. And, I mean, they're going to actually give a damn about broadcasting the games. and I think a lot of people have been turned off by the fact that ESPN like people have made fun of their halftime shows first of all because of the who's on it but it's like 30 seconds of talk
Starting point is 02:32:23 three minutes of commercials 30 seconds of talk three minutes of commercials you gotta let some stuff breathe a little bit don't you yeah it's very shallow analysis too of just Stephen A screaming about how they need to you know they can't let you come into your house and do this is conscionable yeah it's not real basketball analysis
Starting point is 02:32:40 you better get going shake you just Alexander Yeah, it's cliches, exactly. But whatever. Come on, Isaiah Hanson, I'm watching you. Please tell me he's running for president. Please tell me. Oh, you just want to want on on VSP. Actually, that might work.
Starting point is 02:32:56 That might work. I mean, there's an alternative motive. There just is. Five minutes left to go on the show. What should we do? We should play America's fastest-growing sports radio game show. We simply call it a B. Believe it or not.
Starting point is 02:33:12 And here's how it works. You'll call 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. Today's edition of Believe it or not is whether or not this player is projected to be first-round pick Ross. Are we going on that or just a draft prospect in general? Top 100 NBA prospect. If he is, you'll say this. Believe it.
Starting point is 02:33:33 If he's not, he is a member of Congress. The United States Congress. And you will answer quickly. You have two seconds. Not, um, who's the name again? We're hanging up on you. Control. Wolf? Don't give them
Starting point is 02:33:46 ideas. That's what they're doing anyway. I see you, prize horse. You name two of them in a row. You're going to win a prize. We're playing for today, Jonathan. Three prizes, of course. Got the T-shirt. A pair, tickets to see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest on on October 26 at the Woodlands Pavilion. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.
Starting point is 02:34:02 And we got a four pack of tickets with pit passes for Monster Jam on October 18th at NRG Stadium. Again, tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. All right, let's go. Koso, you're ready to play, believe it or not? I'm a little high right now, but I got there.
Starting point is 02:34:17 That's fine. Lance Gooden, Guard, St. John's. Believe it or not? Not. No, he's a Texas representative. That's right. Name number two for the win. Hakeem Jeffries, the forward out of Memphis. Believe it or not. Believe it. No, representative out of New York. Bye. That's up. And asks if he was rolling or he's piping or he's... It doesn't matter. Or he's using the gummies. Roger on 790. You're ready to play. believe it or not?
Starting point is 02:34:46 I guess. Roger, Chuckie Hepburn, guard Louisville. Believe it or not? Believe it. There you go. Name number two for the win.
Starting point is 02:34:55 Grant Nelson, Ford, Alabama. Believe it or not? Not. Yeah, he is. He went there. How do you not know an Alabama point guard? Actually,
Starting point is 02:35:07 forward, sorry. 713, 212, 5, 790. Josh on 790, ready to play, believe it or not? Believe it. John Padula, Guard, Ole Miss.
Starting point is 02:35:18 Believe it or not. Believe it. Name number two for the win. Austin Scott is the center out of USC. Believe it or not. Yeah, he's a representative from Georgia. Congratulations, thanks for doing. Rick on 790.
Starting point is 02:35:34 Rick, what was your favorite part of today's 10-2 radio show? Oh, the whole show. The what? The whole what? The whole show. Okay, thank you. Appreciate you listening since 10 o'clock this morning. Derek Wolf forward Michigan.
Starting point is 02:35:49 Believe it or not. Yeah, we talked about them all show long. We talked about Derek Wolf all four hours. Full breakdown. Al on 790, Al, your favorite part of today's 10-2 radio show. All of that. Lamont, Butler, Guard, Kentucky. Believe it or not?
Starting point is 02:36:08 Yeah, he is. We talked about him. What, 10, 30, 11, 15, 1145. You guys got to listen to the show. We gave you more NBA draft break. down than anybody else in the marketplace. Let's go to Ken on 790. Ken, you're ready to play, believe it or not? Believe it.
Starting point is 02:36:24 Chas Lanier, Guard, Tennessee. Believe it or not? Believe it. Yes. Name number two for the win. Troy Balderson is a guard out of Oregon. Believe it or not. He's a representative out of Ohio. Congratulations. There you go.
Starting point is 02:36:43 All right. We got a minute left in the show. Astros tonight. How are they going to do sports RV? I got them winning this one in a higher scoring affair. What is the overrunner in the game? You know, Zach Wheeler is throwing for the Phillies, right? And Jake Myers has been cleaning up.
Starting point is 02:37:00 Okay, forget what I said. This is a stay away. It's a stay away. Tomorrow we've got, I just don't get it. Shorter show with Astros on deck, Brian McAggard along the way. Up next, Planton, Wexler. What the hell is Clanton wearing? Jesus.
Starting point is 02:37:16 What a mess. It's the A team on sports. shirt. I love it. It's a hot mess. Talk to you later.
