Starting point is 00:00:00 is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. 10-01 in H-town. Good morning. And welcome to a Thursday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross. This is Sports Talk 790. Oh man of the Astros fire away at the age yesterday. You know, Ross, I think the number one thing about as you get older is you always should be able to learn and accept when new knowledge comes your way. Hmm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:34 So when I thought about this song coming to work, I was, I texted Jonathan and said, we're going to go with, hit me with your best shot. And I was thinking, is that Pat Benatar or Joan Jett? Everybody gets them confused, I feel like. It's neither one of them. What? It's something called Adona. No, this is Pat Benatar.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Are you sure? It says sung by Adon. You know what? Maybe this is a 20-20 version. Uh-huh. See, again, this is AI coming into play. Uh, see? I told you.
Starting point is 00:01:04 It is Pat Benatar. I told you you can't trust AI. You're right. You're right. So how do I, as a music aficionado? No, no, hold on me. As a music. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:01:16 I know, I didn't mean. That was rude. As a music appreciator. That was mean. I'm sorry. How do I separate Pat Benatar from Joan Jet? I don't know. Listen to their music a lot.
Starting point is 00:01:26 I guess that would be the easy. But it's... You never do a deep dive into Joan Jet? But, I mean, I would think that I'm not the only one that confuses Pat Benetar and John Jet. Yeah, I just agreed with you. I think it's very. common. Okay. And then I brought up somebody named Adon. I guess Adona did a 20-20 version of this song. I don't even know what a don't know. So not yet. You know, A.I. Shut your bum ass up. Oh, goodness. All right. Good morning, everybody. I know many of you off today for Juneteenth. Yes. Happy Juneteenth, everyone. Because it was strange to me. I always checked my time from my house to the office. And it kept saying 46 minutes. I'm like, wait a minute. It's only 46 minutes on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Saturdays and Sundays. No traffic. No traffic. It's 46 minutes for you? Yes, that is correct. 37 miles. Woo! Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Don't. It's a very, it's a very source of day. You listen to a lot of books on tape. You'd knock one out a week. It's, and we're dog sitting this week. And the guest dog, we're doing this again next week, too. The guest dog won't be up at 4 o'clock this morning and go outside. Oh, hell no.
Starting point is 00:02:35 You got to get up because you don't want mess all over the place Correct. So I'm a little sleep deprived. I try to get an extra wink in between like 630 and 715, but I'm still not 100%. So you're going to carry the show today. Okay. So don't say like every other day. I'm not taking the low-hanging fruit. I know you're going to.
Starting point is 00:02:54 I did do it. I did do it. I know you're going to. I resisted. So you had the Astros playing late. Yes. The guest dog got me up at four. Oh, you flipped that bad boy off in the same. sixth inning though. I did when they score all the
Starting point is 00:03:07 runs. I'll be brutal. When they got up to 9-1 or when I went to the bathroom last time, I did go check the sports score and I looked at the box score and I'm like, my God, 20 hits. Oh. Yes. Double-digit runs again. Yes. Everybody said you couldn't do it in back-to-back games. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:24 So let's do this. Let's send somebody to Lake Charles today and let's bet the under, on the over-under on the number of runs in today's game. Because the Astros can't put up that kind of offense for 30-stradine. The only reason why you maybe think you can is because, first of all, the A's suck. And second of all, the balls are flying out in West Sacramento, California.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Correct. Correct. And that's why. Remember, we got burned on the under in Tampa because of that. We certainly did. You and I took a massive loss on that. That was my suggestion. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:03:56 We're together on that. I'm sorry. The over under on runs tonight. Which is like taking gas? Don't look. 10 and a half. 10 and a half. Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:07 I was going to say 9.5. Now, remember, Monday was the total was four. And that was a day where the temperatures were like 85 degrees. The last two days has been really stinking hot in Sacramento. But I thought I was supposed to get a little cooler today. 16 runs Tuesday. Yesterday, 15 runs. Yeah, it's only getting up to 85 today.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Hmm. How much do you know about Jacob Lopez? Oh, it's a lefty? Oh, stay away. Astros crush lefties. Yeah, I was going to say, it's all right. So then we'd probably want to go with the over ten and a half. You don't have to stay away from me.
Starting point is 00:04:49 You just take the other side of me. That's a stay away for me. Okay. All right, so let's pretend we make that we're in Lake Charles right now at a particular casino. You choose. Okay. We'll go at the Isle of Capri. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:03 We go to the betting window. Yes. And I have to make a bet. You have to make a bet. What are you doing? Lefty. I'm going to go with everything you just said. I'm going to go with, there's no way the Astros can produce that kind of offense for a third straight day.
Starting point is 00:05:19 And they may still win. They may still win, ain't nothing. But it does take 10 and a half to win on a combined total. I'm going to go, not betting my life savings, but I'm going to take money that I would spend on you on a nice dinner. And I'm going to put it towards the under. 10 and a half. Colton Gordon 4.7 ERA.
Starting point is 00:05:39 So elevate that a little bit because it's out in the west. 1.3 whip. Uh-huh. Stay with it. Make your call. Just do it. Over.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Over it is? Okay. It's a Thursday gut feeling. It's also a getaway day too. Those guys want to get in back way. It's like Cooper Hummel's in the lineup. Why you be smirching
Starting point is 00:06:03 Cooper Hummel there? Is Shade Whitcomb and Cooper Hummel? Yeah, Shays about a bit back with the team. Yeah, you got a pinch hit A-B yesterday. Yeah. But yeah, it is fun to see what the Astros are able to do and not only that, but the Mariners lost
Starting point is 00:06:17 yesterday, the Yankees lost yesterday and that means your beloved Astros. And again, I'm not, look, I will lie to you if it helps the show. Yeah, we know. The Astros have the second
Starting point is 00:06:33 best record in the American League and I'm telling you the truth. Wow. They have a better record than the New York Yankees. Suck it, Yankees. They just can't handle the Angels. Angels are just too good, huh, Yanks? They only scored runs yesterday, but they didn't score enough to win. They lost again to the Angels.
Starting point is 00:06:56 The Angels are a juggernaut. They're not a juggerna. According to the Yankees. And guess who's going to be playing the Angels starting tomorrow night? That would be... Uh-oh, that's true, actually. Should we be worried? Angels are heating up, Maddie. Now, remember, I got them going five and one
Starting point is 00:07:09 this trip and so far, or the rest of trip after Monday, so far they're two and all in this. I got a little wiggle room. As long as I beat the ace tonight. I'm trying to see the, yeah, the angel's probably right now just getting into their beds. Yeah, it's a cross-country flat they just finished off. So maybe they're so
Starting point is 00:07:26 we tired for Friday? You never know? Probably not. You're probably. They've got a good night's rest. Yeah. You say Kukuchi'll sleep like 16 hours. Apparently Pat Benatar, Frank Kennedy and Katie says Pat Benatar does not sing that song anymore. She's against gun violence. So she didn't sing it.
Starting point is 00:07:40 That's too bad. Wait. It's not even a... I'm not making... Unless Kenny's making something up. I mean, she's not talking about being at the battle of Bull Run. You sure he's not messing with you? I don't think Kenny would.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I mean, he would have some things, but I don't think that would be one of them. It's a metaphor, I thought, Pat, unless she's really... Wait a minute. Has Pat Benatar been doing gangster rap this whole time? I don't know. I couldn't... She's out there blasting on fools? What is Pat Benatar's last hit?
Starting point is 00:08:08 Would it be probably... I have no idea. And my internet's not working, so I can't look at it. Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. My Wi-Fi down. And there's somebody here. It's on holiday. Yeah, so we can't get it fixed.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Everything was weird today. The drive was ridiculously fast for all things considered. And I got to the office today, and there were 500 parking spots. That's when I knew it was a holiday. It did not click in until I got here. Because our sales pit, which normally is fairly empty to begin with, was super empty today. Why are you laughing? They're out there selling the show.
Starting point is 00:08:37 What are you talking about? We have great advertisers on this radio show. You're about to hear from one of them in about 30 seconds. Yeah, for you. I'm looking at the, let's take a log today. It's fine. Oh, you, uh, yeah, that's fine. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:52 Hey, everybody. If you own a, let's stand by for this. If you own a business and you want the business to grow, I want you to think about having Ross Field of Real endorse your product. Thank you. Thank you, Matt. Send an email. Ross at Sports790.com.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Ross at Sports790.com. saying, hey, I am a company that does this and I have a budget that I would like to spend on advertising and I want Ross to promote it. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate that. Do you ever hear Clanton do that to Ruexler? Nope. No. Do you ever hear Sean Salsbury do that for Dan Matthews? Nope. God, no. So it makes me the nicest person in this company. That's true. Or at least on this radio station. It took you seven seconds to pat yourself on the back. No, I'm just telling the truth. No, no. That's true. You are the best, Matt. Wait, wait to find out what happens to. Of all the 790 times.
Starting point is 00:09:39 talent if I was picking a co-host, I would pick Matt Thomas. That's what I'm talking about right there. And that's a fact. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-790. If you're off today and you don't normally get a chance to call the show, we will give you the leech that we would normally give on a Friday because it feels it's a holiday week.
Starting point is 00:09:56 So I see people are taking tomorrow off too because of this to kind of extend out. Yeah, it's like a donut hole. The Friday, you take that one off too. Eat that up. So eating a donut on a Thursday can also be translated. eating on a donut on Friday. Yes. So you go glaze.
Starting point is 00:10:12 By the way, I got donuts today. I don't normally eat donuts. You did? Yeah. That is not like you. No, I'm not a huge donut person per se, but I got one glaze and one plank cake. People complain about plank cake, but Craig Ackerman and I love Plank Lake donuts. Oh, plank cake's a classic. I feel like it's almost not like a diet donut, but it's like the less sugar in the group.
Starting point is 00:10:29 I mean, it's for old people, but I love it. I'm with you. Plain cake with a cup of coffee? Oh, spectacular. You dunk it in there? I could. Okay. I'm just asking if you're a dunker.
Starting point is 00:10:40 From the dunk's position on the court? Not the dunker, not the dunker spot. No, the dunker spot, okay. So if you are new to having a day off on a day like this and want to call on and say hello, we would love to have you at 713-212-5-7-9-A-year-old. So I have been obsessed with what's going to happen with Kevin Durant. And maybe I'm only one. But I even have shams on notifications like if something happens. Because I don't trust anybody else.
Starting point is 00:11:06 I mean, there's a lot of people that are- You got the noties on, Maddie? I got everybody's gravy training off of him. they're saying what they hear and whatnot. And that's the for you tab. But when Shams put something out, I will then believe it. By the way, Shams yesterday had the story that the Lakers, Genie Bus and the bus family are selling majority interest to a minority owner for $10 billion. 10B with a billion. That's, I mean, good for her, I guess. Of course, good for the entire family. But my God. She's going to stay. I was confused by the whole thing.
Starting point is 00:11:42 She's staying as a lead governor, right, which is the lead executive. Which is what they mean on her. But they see who's governor in NBA and that's fine. My guess it's going to be a five-year situation. I mean, she's got to be in her early 60s, I'm thinking. Okay. So, yeah, she'll do that for a while. So Sam's has it.
Starting point is 00:12:00 So every time I go to Shams and I see that I got a notification, I flip out only to realize it's been nothing about Kevin Durant. But yeah, I'm doing that. And that's all I can do at this point because I'm not going to bother anybody that's involved in it and let Shams. Because again, when this deal goes down, all these teams will go to the highest media source they can. And Shams has, what, several million followers, correct? Yes. And his word, and he is not, I don't think Shams has messed up much.
Starting point is 00:12:27 He may not have been batting a thousand, but he bats about 95. Yes. Yeah, here and there, there's been, I don't know. A little bit of here and there. He said something wrong or Woj has or each or vice versa. But, I mean, you talk about the two guys that get it right. I mean, 98% of the time, it's those two guys. So nothing new on that, but we'll give you what these streets are saying, perhaps throughout the course of the day.
Starting point is 00:12:48 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. George is with us on the Matt Thomas show with Ross. George, good morning. Oh, no way. Hey, Matt, can you hear that? Yeah, what is it? I'm in the shower right now.
Starting point is 00:13:01 I didn't think I was to get on this clip. Well, hold on. Well, hold on, why don't you cut water? Oh, wait, wait a minute, wait a minute. Wait a minute. I'm out of the chair. I'm sorry, George. You're going on the Friday open tomorrow. Friday, yeah, you're going to hit yourself tomorrow at 10 o'clock. You understand this, correct? Oh, no. You're in the shower?
Starting point is 00:13:19 Yeah, well, no. Whoa, whoa, no. Oh, my cat just came in here. Watch out. Are you by, so it's just you and the cat in the room? I mean, I mean, I got a little bird. You remember what that bird's name is? Mrs. Duff, sup, sup. All right, but real talk. Mr. Matt, real talk. You're the closest thing of black friend I know, so happy Juneteenth, but also I really called in to talk about, hey, do you see Lance McGovern on Twitter?
Starting point is 00:13:51 That's not him, right? That is not him, yeah. Or did he deactivate and just come out with a vengeance? No, he deactivated. Yeah, that's a fake account. Okay. Hey, do you think Julian Morales doesn't block me yet because she's unvaccinated? No, you're probably still blocked.
Starting point is 00:14:07 I'm probably rightfully so, George Yeah, go back And that's not That's That dude's weird Yeah, George has been calling us for a while Yeah, he's a little officer He's got a bird and a cat
Starting point is 00:14:22 No, the bird is Like a bird Not an actual bird mat You know pooping Not like a bird that cheeks would attack Yeah cheeks would attack that cat and bird Okay that's just gross let's move on.
Starting point is 00:14:42 Thank you, George. Let's give George like a year off. He can't call the show for a year. One year? Yeah, I think one year's suspension is one of the time. All right. Yeah, and by the way, Lance McCullors is not going to be on Twitter ever again. So anytime you see Lance McCullors tweeting, it's a fake account.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Okay. That's obviously somebody with a lot of time on their hands. Too much free time. Yeah. All right. What do you want to go? Oh, to the offensive yesterday. Oh, by the way, I got something for you.
Starting point is 00:15:13 We were talking about this at the dinner table last night. So we have said, we were talking about Framber Valdez yesterday. And I said there is no chance, no way, no how that Frommberg Valdez coming back as an astro. Yes. And I go off of that because the Astros all throughout spring training did not make any sort of attempt to try to negotiate a contract. Usually you want to do it with a year left to go because if you leave spring training in the final year of a contract and you don't have a deal, that gives the sign that, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:51 that player wants to go out and see what his value is. Now, it doesn't necessarily mean that he might not come back under the Astros terms, but that would also go against what I say of no way to know how he comes back. I think Framber Valdez, based on what he's doing this year, is going to be able to find a deal somewhere that's going to be, I mean, probably to his liking. It may not be a five or seven year deal, but there may be a three year deal that's going to pay him some pretty good cash. He's going to be looking for, yeah, seven to eight years deal. Whether he gets it or not, remains to be seen.
Starting point is 00:16:24 We'll see. So here is the issue. We were talking about this. They said, well, why don't we, because they said we, why don't the Astros do the same thing with Framber Valdez that they did with Kyle Tucker? trade him with a year left to go on the contract, get some prospects, so when he says goodbye, because Kyle Tucker had shown absolutely no indication he was going to come back and play for the Astros in 2026 and beyond,
Starting point is 00:16:50 that you don't sit there with a pitcher gone and nothing but a compensatory pick and return on. The kids didn't know about the compensatory pick, but they were just saying, you're leaving without any back. So I'll ask you this question. Are the Astros in a precarious? spot because of what they're doing right now and how good Framber is and how beat up the Astros
Starting point is 00:17:18 pitching staff is collectively, organizationally, frankly, at the major league level. Or do you say, you know what? Them's the brakes. The Astros are competing. They're in first place. They have the second best record in the American League right now. And you have to think about 2025 and think of only 2025. Well, you have to toe the line. You have to, and that's what they did with the Kyle Tucker trade and then keeping Framber Valdez. Is they're towing the line between trying to prepare for the future and also trying to compete right now. And at this point, I think you go over that line if you trade away Framber Valdez. Right now, with he and Hunter Brown as your one too and this line up the way that it is, you're competing for an American League pennant.
Starting point is 00:18:05 I think you're not doing that if Framber Valdez is gone from this team. So the easy answer to me, and I told this to the kids, is you are trying every year you can play that as long as your roster is built to some level of success and the ability to win, you have to win. Why are you worried about 2026, 2027 when 2025 may be your year? Now, I don't think the Astros are a World Series favorite. Matter of fact, I don't think they're a favorite. They're even a prime consideration to win the American League. But you don't tell those 26 guys at right now because they're playing outstanding baseball.
Starting point is 00:18:44 They have a five and a half game in their division and they went from a team that was three to four, five games under 500 to being double-digit games above 500. They're thinking about winning and winning now. So I frankly told the kids, and I don't know if the audience agrees, you have to think about now and you have to take your chances. Because what kind of sign would that be to the organization
Starting point is 00:19:05 if all of a sudden you're in first place, And you are down to two A-level pitchers. The rest of the guys are nice, Ross, but they ain't A-Level. Hunter Brown is A-level. Frauber-Beld is A-level. What kind of message would you be sending to your fan base that here we are having this great run, much of the surprise of many, and you all of a sudden trade-off because you're worried about what to do in 20, 26 and beyond? It's just that's a risk you take when you keep a guy here with a year left to go on his contract.
Starting point is 00:19:38 So that's a risk. It's a good risk. Because right now the Astros are getting good pitching from him, quality start after quality start. And by the way, they're in first place in the division. Yeah. And I would say they're absolutely in the thick of one of the contenders for the American League. If not, I mean, look, the Tigers have been great. But, I mean, outside of Terrick Scouble, they've had some good pitching. And their bullpen's been good too.
Starting point is 00:20:01 But I don't think, despite their record, I don't think that they are going to be just some indomitable force in the playoffs. because they haven't been there and done that. They beat the Astros but then lost the division series. Yeah, I get it. So, just something that I think some Astro fans are probably contemplating because the history has shown that players have walked. And in this past off season, one player moved a year before he could walk. I thought that once they traded Tucker, I thought they were going to trade Framber. Because that would make sense to try to hit a soft reset button, get the prospects back,
Starting point is 00:20:35 maybe take a year or two off and then be back at it for Yordons Prime. but clearly I was wrong. I mean, they're winning all these games with some kind of black magic of pitching, and it just keeps happening. And they're going to run away with it. As of right now, they're going to run away with the AOS. And then you're playing for seating, which we never would have thought about a month ago. No.
Starting point is 00:21:00 But they're playing great baseball. And the schedule continues to be fairly soft. And people will get healthier. Yor Don will get healthier. Eric Getty's going to come back. Christian Javier is throwing bullpins. Luis Garcia, maybe. I mean, if somebody, I'd put it this way.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Was it even live BP for Javier? If somebody comes back, that's a win, right? If just anybody comes back, 1029 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross, 713-212-5-790. If you'd like to join our radio program today, 7-13-212-5-7-90. Time is 1033. It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. No Brian McTagger today. He's in Paris or Londoner, one of the two.
Starting point is 00:21:40 He was in Paris for most of the week. I think he was going to London for this a day or so. So he'll be back with his next week. Wonderful. Is he going to the motherland? Ireland? No, just that those two. He's already over there.
Starting point is 00:21:52 He better get to the motherland. He's Irish? I don't know. Oh, the McTaggart's from Limerick. Go see the old family home. I mean, I guess next year, they've only got to, you long can take a week off. I mean, I guess if you wanted to go to a third country, would take a few after days, right? Well, come on now.
Starting point is 00:22:09 M.O.B. Check's probably pretty nice. He does okay for himself. He says okay. All right, 713, 212 5790. If you want to join our program today, 713-212-5-7-90. We have game six of the NBA finals tonight. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:22:27 It does sneak up on you. It does sneak after being gone. You don't get in a rhythm with the way that they do this. Yeah. Yep, yep. Let's check the 4U tab on the latest when it comes. Oh, no. Come on. I'm sorry. It's addiction. Okay. Let's see. Women and Bikinis and WNBA fight.
Starting point is 00:22:41 You know what I'm getting a lot of? Are guys losing blackjack hands? They definitely know my phone. Yeah, they know what you're up to. That's pretty funny. Let's see here. Which they do that. And then I thought they didn't allow you.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Most places don't allow you phones at the table. The last one I just looked at was that the El Cortez. This guy bet $1,000 in each of the hands. He had six hands on the table. Yes. The dealers showed don't. dealt him one card, then the dealer showed his card, and they started playing off
Starting point is 00:23:15 with a one hand. Is that an advantage to anybody? Probably the house. If they're doing it, whenever you see these new games, and you're like, hey, yeah, I wonder what the math is on that. The math is you lose. I've never seen that before. And I did not watch the entire video so far.
Starting point is 00:23:31 He's two hands into it, and he's lost both of them. Okay, well, just keep giving us the play-by-play, I guess. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Okay, so, in a In summation, it sounds like, again, there are other teams trying to get involved. Toronto would like to get involved in this. Miami may be pivoting to other people if the Kevin Durant stuff doesn't come into play. The Rockets are standing firm.
Starting point is 00:23:52 The San Antonio Spurs seem to be wavering, although rumors have it, they may come back. Phoenix is like, man, you've got to get this improved. We need more value in return. Then Brian Winhorse says, hey, you know, Phoenix may hold on to it for a while. I still don't think that's a possibility. still don't think it's the right thing to do. If you're trying to rebuild your organization on a reset, a soft reset or a heart reset, depending on how bad this is going to be for them, you need to figure out who you want in this draft. You need a top 10 pick. And the teams that they're talking to, obviously, are going to all possess top 10 picks. Grizzly said that they were not interested in the Kevin Durant. The Knicks said that Kevin Durant was interested in going to New York, but the Nick said we're not interested in Kevin Durant. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Oh, was it Janice the Knicks we're all in on? I got those confused, I think. Somebody had reported it. I don't remember who it was. It's all crazy. I mean, the reality is it's just, again, it's about 30 or 40 different people aggregating and guessing. Are Nick's going to hire a coach? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:24:56 What's going on with that? You figured when they've hired Tibbs, there was like a plan in place. You would think, right? Our plan is to ask every other team if we could hire their coach. Yeah. And every one of them said no. Maybe they were hoping that one was going to say, okay, go ahead, take a look.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Maybe they were like 50-50 shot. Someone will say yes. Even Quinn Snyder and Atlanta was told, no, you can't go there. Shut your bum ass up. I mean, Atlanta's like the epitome of mid, and they're like, no, we like our guy. And Trey Young was like, stay off our coach. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:27 I mean, even Chris Finch in Minnesota was, you know, that'd have been a good bump for him. I think he's a good coach, yeah. I like Chris a lot. So, and then, of course, the Rockets told the Knicks to shut their bum asses up. and anybody got time for taking your phone calls about that. As they should have.
Starting point is 00:25:41 So I still firm hold that this will be done. I think I said Friday. It probably may not be until the draft, but why would the Sun's wait post-draft? That doesn't make sense. Only if someone's drafting for you, maybe. But that even seems weird. I mean, I'm just trying to think of a reason.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Do you go baseball style and you're waiting for camp injuries? I mean, it doesn't make any sense. No. Or football style, I should say. You know what it probably is? It's probably the sun's wanting to make the move of Minnesota because Minnesota is offering the most. And they're spending the last handful of days
Starting point is 00:26:17 convincing him that Minnesota would be a good spot for you. And then Durant's saying no. It's like, I don't want to go. So think about this. Is Kevin Durant really anti-Cole weather? Or is he anti-the- Minnesota Timberwolves an organization? I would presume that Rudy Gober would go as part of that deal to Phoenix. So if you were worried about whether or not Gobert was a good team,
Starting point is 00:26:38 or not or could be a guy that you could win a championship with. You're doing it with Nas Reid and you're doing it with Anthony Edwards. You're not doing it with Rudy Gobert. Okay. The list is... My colleague's a good veteran guy. I mean... Houston, Miami and who else? San Antonio would be the
Starting point is 00:26:54 three places that he would accept an extension. Are they in a better spot the next few years? Rockets? Yes. Rockets better than Minnesota after back-to-back? Absolutely. You think so? I would say going forward. Okay. I mean, so with Kevin Durant on the Rockets? Yeah, maybe not.
Starting point is 00:27:11 I don't know. I think Kevin Durant helps whomever he goes to. That I'm not going to question. I mean, everything's warm climate there. But are you really going to say no to Minneapolis because it's just cold there a lot? I mean, look, I may be a hypocrite because I did move from there because it was too cold. I live there 12 months a year. I think mentally, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Mentally, it's probably challenging. but once you get there, it's not that bad? No. That's not true. It's awful. But I mean, but I'm playing for the Timberwolves. I'm not talking about the weather. I'm not talking about just the weather.
Starting point is 00:27:46 I'm saying mentally you're like, yeah, it's going to be cold, it's going to suck. But once you get in the routine of it or whatever, if you're doing it, if it's not weather-related, does he think that maybe Anthony Edwards isn't mature enough to do it to lead a team? Would Anthony Edwards, you know, acquiesce to Durant or maybe Durant doesn't think he would? and say that, you know, it's going to be Anthony's team and still should be Anthony's team. You can't be Kevin Durant's team. If it goes to Rockets, it can't be Katie's team at 37 here.
Starting point is 00:28:15 It just can't. It could be a 1A or a 2. But in Minneapolis, you are, you're number 2. Well, Damien Lillard didn't want to go to, I mean, he wanted to go to Miami and the trailblazers said, all right, that's cool. I join Milwaukee. Why can't the sons do that? They need somebody else to add to that list for Durant that he wants to go play.
Starting point is 00:28:39 they can bump up the price. When you have three teams and three teams only that Duran has told the sons, I will go play for, that limit your possibilities of those three teams trying to ante up something more to make the deal happen, especially if you have one of the three teams, whether it's Houston or San Antonio or Miami, you're like, we've given you the best we can give you.
Starting point is 00:29:00 This is all we can do. That will happen. But I just wonder, and also the sons have no leverage. Everybody knows they're trying to offload. Kevin Durant. They know they want to start game one of this year without Kevin Durant on their roster. Everyone knows that. And they also want to have draft picks back. They've got no draft picks. You get one if you make a deal prior to next Wednesday. San Antonio's had the number two pick if they were to give that up.
Starting point is 00:29:28 The Rockets have the pick number 10 and I don't know what Miami's situation is. If the Rockets ended up with two, three, four in the draft, do you think a deal's already done? That'd be a question for Raphael Stone. I'm just saying, do you, what do you think? I think yes. I think. One they would have kept, I think. I think.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Okay, I'll purely guess on this. If the Rockets had two, three, or four, do you want to extend to five? Well, they only could have dropped, jumped to four, right? That's true, because after that five through nine would have been determined. Yeah, I'll say, yeah,
Starting point is 00:30:06 the deal would have been done. I think so, too. So it was the luck of the draw, or the unfortunate luck of the draw. Or? sometimes deals you don't make end up going in your favor. Yeah. Because you don't want that number two, three, or four to be a generational player and you go grab a guy that is obviously the downside of his career.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Again, I still think Kevin Durant can score 25 points a game. I still think Kevin Durant's going to make whatever team he goes to better. But Father Time never loses. Yes. But I feel like I'm doing butt after butt after butt after butt here. But the NBA player, the really good ones, stay good longer. Yes. Also, though, it was a good point.
Starting point is 00:30:52 It was the podcast that we played the audio. It was Zach Lone and Kirk Colesbury. They were asking, who is the oldest player right now who made a huge impact in a team that made a deep playoff run? Like we talk about these old supersts, Steph Curry out in the second round. LeBron James out in the first round. Do you want to describe superstars or just good players in general? Like you're making a huge impact or in the finals. How about who's the oldest player in the finals making a huge impact?
Starting point is 00:31:15 Well, right now it's Miles Turner probably. Yeah, and he's not even been that great in the finals. And he's not even that old. Yeah. I mean, Miles Turner's 29. Describe Mike Connolly to the audience. Yeah, Mike Conley, that's a good one.
Starting point is 00:31:30 I mean, he's a good point guard. He gets you 10. He doesn't score, but he's a good distributor, doesn't turn a ball over and plays a good defense game for a guy his age. You just, I mean, that was just the first random example I thought of. No, I know. It's difficult. That's what I'm saying. I mean, LeBron James, what he does, especially in the regular.
Starting point is 00:31:48 season has been great. He's been on the first round for like four straight years or something like that, right? But are you betting on them losing in the first round again next year? I wouldn't. With Luca Donchich If Luke is healthy and they play together with 482 and they get a real center there? I can find anything
Starting point is 00:32:04 around them. Yeah. All right, we've got a couple of different athletes in sports, Ross, that had the need for speed. We'll give you details on that. Okay. When we've returned. 1044, it is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. 713, 212, 570 if you want to join us on this June 10th.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Many of you have the day off. If you want to come in and say hello, you may do so at 713-212-5-79. Jonathan, I'm going to very safely tell you you'll be suspended without paying the next time you play this as a bump. Get us anything else. I don't care. It's just in a rotation. No, well, it's a crap. I don't hear this rotation on the shows. Tell Gordy to get out of the system. It's not me.
Starting point is 00:32:41 It sucks. All right, move on. Any other song? Not that mini song. I love you. I know you did. Okay, one of, or E.D. Anything with E.D. Bertel.
Starting point is 00:32:53 We're going to play now. This, this mini, whatever, this horrific song. Oh, God. I like it. I don't know. Yeah, Matt. It's light and airy. Not light and air. It's, it's burning to my ears.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Listen to the five seconds. Oh. You don't hear the birds chirping? Yeah. No, I hate it. Making love with you. Oh. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:18 All right, let's get back to sports. People need sports on a holiday. They don't need mini-repertin talk? No, they don't. Zach Edie is a Memphis Grizzly center. He's slow-footed. I thought he had a very underwhelming rookie season. At times, I thought you could really take advantage of him.
Starting point is 00:33:38 And then many teams did. Yeah. I look at him and I go, I'm glad the Rockets don't have him. Now, could he turn out to be a much better NBA player? You would certainly presume so. His limitations are always going to be his limitations of the slow-footedness. Yeah. Well, he's got a fast foot, a lead foot when he's driving.
Starting point is 00:33:57 He does? Lafayette, Indiana. He was stopped a couple of days ago. Western East. This says Lafayette. For Lafayette proper. It was southern Tippa, Tippecanoe County. That's a great name of a county.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Tipakanoe. Tipa-Cano. He was driving 101 miles an hour. In a 55 zone on Highway Indiana 25. 7.03 p.m. probable cause affidavit when the trooper caught up with a speeding car. Eadie turned eastbound on Tippecanoe County Road and stopped. Edie has an initial hearing at 1030 Monday morning for a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. Edie told police he was trying to pass a vehicle as an explanation for speeding.
Starting point is 00:34:44 Now, you're saying to yourself, well, what kind of car was he driving? What kind of car was he driving? He was driving a... It's got to be in a big SUV, doesn't he? A Bio Memento. Bio? Bia. Oh, Bia.
Starting point is 00:35:01 Bia Memento. Okay. Kia Sorrento. Now, one of the vehicles we own is a Kia. They do a nice job. Very comfortable vehicle. If I'm Ria, am I bragging about this?
Starting point is 00:35:16 That my guy, that you can go 101 in my car? Probably. I mean, wouldn't you? First of all, that he can fit in it. What is he? 7 3, 7.4? It'll be a little bit of a humble brag, would it not? I think so.
Starting point is 00:35:25 You got the need for speed. Go get you a Riabrento. Yeah, he's listed at 7 foot 4. He's not cramming in a Lamborghini. But if you were to say, let's go through a list of potential vehicles that would go 101 miles an hour in an Indiana highway. I would not put that vehicle in particular in my top five. Now, get to the other store you're going to get to, and then I have a question. Before this other one? Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:35:50 Well, I know you're going to bring up the other one. Yeah. So the other player who has the need for speed is recent draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, Shador Sanders. Let's see here. He was going over 100 miles an hour himself. And I want to read you the details on that. Tuesday morning in Cleveland, he was only going 101, but it was in a 60 mile per hour zone.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Apparently, Mill Kuiper was in the car with him. That's not true. I'm just kidding. They're hitting the club. I have a question. What are the odds they were both going 101 miles an hour? You're saying that maybe the police cut them some slack? Well, maybe the reverse.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Aren't the penalties worse when you're going over 100 miles an hour? I don't know. It's over 30. If you go over 30 to speed limit, it's a felony charge. I'm just asking. That can't be the case in Indiana because it says Mr. Meeter on there. He was going 101 and 55. I thought that if you...
Starting point is 00:36:57 went that over the limit that they would arrest you and take your car from you. Yeah. That's crazy. Or maybe they should. I just find it. That's, I mean, just perhaps coincidence, I guess. They're both going exactly 101 miles per hour. Isn't that what happened with the guy from the Raiders and he ended up in Las Vegas blowing up the...
Starting point is 00:37:17 Well, yeah, he committed vehicular manslaughter. I don't know how fast he was going. I think he was going faster than that. He was in a sports car. I don't remember what it was, if was a Ferrari or Lambo or what. He recently, I think there was like a tearful apology for he, they let him out of prison. And I saw some story. I didn't read all the details.
Starting point is 00:37:37 But he, and he went to apologize to the family. You know, it's funny. You just brought up, I didn't think about it. The first thing I thought about is we have too many people in society, whether they're professional athletes or not, that don't understand that going that rate of speed can kill a yourself and be others. Yes. And that whatever charge they get, does something, a light bulb get turned on in their brain to go, you are playing with your fate. My daughter, I have three wonderful children.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Two of my three kids have led foot and it is a constant argument with them. And one of them we monitor on GPS. Really? And the young one, my Carly, is about to get seriously in trouble. She's got one more strike against her or she's going to lose her car for a week. Because her rate of speed is... Now, her driving itself is fine.
Starting point is 00:38:36 She uses her blinkers. She looks on both ways. She's not too close to vehicle in front of her. She just goes too fast. So that's what I thought about yesterday. Maybe I'm coming from a fatherly perspective of... No, that's good. Yeah, fatherly perspective is good.
Starting point is 00:38:52 It means you care. It means you want people to be safe. And so that's what I've thought about is that Chodore Sanders and Zach Edy are ridiculously blessed that they got pulled over and nothing else happened beyond them getting pulled over. I think it just comes with
Starting point is 00:39:05 the life experience. I mean, I used to drive faster when I was young and no, I don't care. No, I do go, no, all of us go over the speed limit. Now, they're in a single human being in this world that doesn't go over the speed limit. But when you're in that, once you get past like 80, you are, now
Starting point is 00:39:21 granted, you can get killed by a car going 30 miles and not, much less anything. But I mean, when you're on the interstate and you're hitting 84-85, you really are playing with fire. So that's what I thought of. I thought of, especially because I'm trying to teach my kids, especially my youngest one, you cannot go to those kind of rates of speed.
Starting point is 00:39:41 Not that they're doing that, but like my biggest brain, and I'm sorry, Carly, if you're listening, but she'll go 57 and a 30, and I'm like, girl, you have got to slow down. What does she say? I'm sorry. And I'm like, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:39:52 She wasn't paying attention? No, she knows exactly what she's doing. And she knows that we follow her to her speed. So she's about to get the hammer pretty quick. Okay. And she's very social this summer, so she's going to, she better. So giving him keys. She's got a strike two going against her.
Starting point is 00:40:08 We say she's not taking a car to college, right? You might as well let her have this last little year, you know? No, I'm not going to let her go 20, five miles on over the speed limit. No, come on, come on, Jonathan. What are you talking to him? He's only taking it away if she's breaking the rules. Yeah, she can drive all she wants. It's time.
Starting point is 00:40:21 He was already taking it away. No, no, no, no, no, no. No. No. No. she needs to slow down. Yeah. Say, get on the huffy. Let's go. Let me tell you something. Take those keys. My mother still calls me and says, are you, how, are you driving okay? Is you really? Yeah. I don't think anybody, I don't think anybody that has, that's a parent ever
Starting point is 00:40:37 not, not doesn't not worry about their kids driving, no matter where they're going. And I'll be 91 years old and a home and worried about my kids driving. That's good, man. Because I got people like Zach eating chador, Sanders going one-on-one on the streets. These kids today. Second hour of the Matt Thomas show at Ross begins with a visit with our friend Mike and San Antonio. Brian McTaggart, not here today, so we're going to go back to you. Our friend John Lucas, former long-time NBA player and coach, we're with us at 1230 today.
Starting point is 00:41:06 We have the news at noon. We have, I just don't get it coming up in a half an hour. What don't you get, Ross? 30 minutes or now. We'll find the answer to that. 713-212-5-790. It's the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Getting people asking me if there's going to be a funeral service for Cheeks.
Starting point is 00:41:27 If you didn't catch a show yesterday. We set our farewells to my hamster of two years. No funeral services, but donations can be made to the Venmo account of AtSportsMT. Oh, wow. What? Don't give him any money. I'm just saying if it's a part. You're going to take him out of the freezer bag and put them in a little tucks?
Starting point is 00:41:46 I think you move forward with that plan. Did you figure out what you're going to do with them? We're going to bury him. We just got to make sure the dogs don't know where we're burying them. Well, so you can't do it on your property. Why don't you go to a funeral home and have a lot of them? and have a service get a little plot
Starting point is 00:42:03 you already got guest well yeah we know that Jonathan yeah that's not helpful comment let's not get to the formalities of what happened we have to relive the trauma Jonathan jeez yeah no one of your girl thinks you're not very sensitive
Starting point is 00:42:19 well if you missed it it's on both of all it's on all of it's Facebook Instagram and Twitter yeah we posted we had a little during a commercial break actually no, listen to our wonderful sponsors. Listen at 2 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:42:33 Yeah, listen at 2 o'clock. No, I think we're going to Fox Sports Radio at 2 o'clock. I mean, are the Waxson-Clantern working the day? I don't know. They try to beg off every holiday. Yeah, they get most holidays off. They never work on weekends. When's ever heard you heard Adam Clanton
Starting point is 00:42:45 or Adam Wexer on the weekends of anything? Zilch. Not what I'm saying. You and I work weekends. I'm working late night Friday night as a matter of fact. You are. I'm not working this weekend. I don't mind working weekends until college football starts. You know, we'll let Day Matthews handle that.
Starting point is 00:43:03 All right, 713, 212.570. 713-212-5-790. Astros bludgeon the A's again, Rossi. Yes. Five and a half game leave for the local nine now in the West because the Mariners lost again yesterday. They actually lost in the daytime. They finished their series of the Red Sox on the drop two out of three.
Starting point is 00:43:21 That was terrible. That's a shame. And Jose Altovae. Hives a home run while somebody was screaming for him to get his trash can. Suck you. it. Thank you very fan. Thank you, John Boy Media, courtesy of MLB. A proud sponsor of John Boy Media. Ridiculous. That's awful. Let's talk to some people. Let's go to our friend Mike in San Antonio 1105
Starting point is 00:43:43 with the Matt Thomas Show. Ross. Mike, thank you for holding and good morning. Good morning, guys. A lot of talk about animals today. I am not in the shower and I don't have any animals with me. Thank you very much. You're a normal human being that. It makes me happy. I try. I have a question for you about the Rockets week before I getting into that. You were mentioned about McHaggart. His heritage, he's from Scotland.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I just yesterday finished reading the book you wrote, for the second time I finished reading it. And it mentioned that his parents immigrated from Scotland in like the mid-70s. It's a great book. I'm wondering if you're not updated. The Astros, I'm sorry, the Astros 100 things to do,
Starting point is 00:44:20 to see and do before you die for Astros fans. And so he has something in there about it. Oh, okay. One of the Motherlands. So he, that's his motherland, yes, Scotland. So incredible what the Astros are doing. But I have a question for you on the Rockets. And you may have talked about this on the show.
Starting point is 00:44:41 I don't know. But what would you say would be reasonable for them to do to get Duran? I'd love to see them just to get that kind of shooter. But what's reasonable for them to give up? I mean, I know they got to negotiate it. You don't want to give up everything. But what would you, what's your opinion about what they should do if they are actually going to try to get him?
Starting point is 00:44:58 Thanks, Mike. I do believe the 10th draft pick is in play. That'd be it as a starter. Yes. My guess is a future first round pick would be in play. Yes. Because I do believe that the Sons want draft capital. I think it would be, my guess to start would be 10 for 29.
Starting point is 00:45:19 They have 29, you have 10, plus a first rounder, and then Jalen Green, which they would probably move elsewhere. you get a third team involved. We're not guessing that. There have been multiple people that have said the sons are not particularly interested in keeping Jailen Green. So you've got to find a third team to move Jailen Green somewhere. Again, this is if you believe what the rumors are out there.
Starting point is 00:45:40 And then either of Dylan Brooks or Jabari Smith Jr. Probably Jabari Smith Jr. being more attractive to the sons. But if it matches dollar for dollar, can you do that with Jabari? Because he's still relatively cheap? Or do you have to have Dylan Brooks as part of the package? Yeah, well, as a top three, I think he's making a good
Starting point is 00:46:01 good chunk 12 to 15 a million a year I can go look yeah okay that sounds about right yeah if you're doing in Jabbar then maybe I don't know Aaron Holliday or Jack Landale or something like that yeah filler I will not filler but you know filling up the contract
Starting point is 00:46:16 Hey Aaron Holliday did okay for the Rockins in limited time yeah I would probably agree towards what you said I also believe there'll be more draft picks involved I think the sons are looking for. Now, again, just because the sons want something doesn't necessarily mean they're going to get it. That's the feeling that we're getting on the streets right now.
Starting point is 00:46:35 And that's where I think Raphael Stone hits a limit. It's like, no, we're good. Yep. Let me throw this at you then. So if you have done everything to appease Phoenix and said, here's what we'll want to give you, do what kind of San Antonio's doing and kind of getting at the, sending out the vibe that maybe that there isn't going to be a deal done,
Starting point is 00:46:59 and that maybe you can try to get Phoenix to come back and say, okay, we want you involved after all. Because, again, the lesser teams that are involved in trying to get Kevin Durant out of Phoenix, the lesser the hall is going to be. So you're saying the Astro, I mean, the Rockets pull out of the deal? Well, if the Rockets, if the Rockets pull of San Antonio, that leaves really Miami. And then Minnesota, here's the reality.
Starting point is 00:47:24 It sounds like to Minnesota is the one that's got the best package of them all, of all the teams. And you hear Toronto's being involved a little bit. You get the Clippers involved a little bit. But remember, there's only three teams that Duran is at least, through his agents, have said that he would be willing to sign a long-term deal with. Which, again, to me, it's like, okay, oh, the 37-year-old won't sign for four years. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:47:46 For what I understand, it would be two years after this. It'll be a total of three years. Okay. Well, the thing of it is, is that there be a lot. Of a certain age, you can only sign so many years. Correct? Here's a reality. A lot of those teams will give some.
Starting point is 00:48:00 up for Durant. But they're not going to give up the fortune for a one-year guy. Gut feeling. He's a Timberwolf. Timber Wolf. Yeah. Timber Wolf. Okay. For one year. For one year.
Starting point is 00:48:17 And then he gets to go pick where he wants to play for his final couple of years left in the league. And if they get lucky to make a deep run, maybe they can convince him that it's a good spot for him to be in and he signed a two-year extension. And that is a huge ask. And by the way, Anthony Edwards, you know, on the stand. for you, Tab Ross, which I'm getting caught up in. Anthony Edwards is like, again, one report doesn't mean it's accurate.
Starting point is 00:48:38 One thing I saw on Twitter yesterday, and I almost feel like I got to bookmark these bad boys, said that it's not going to, Anthony Edwards has basically said it's not my job to convince Kevin Durant to stay in Minnesota. I don't know. I think if you bring Kevin Durant in, because you're new owners, Alex Rodriguez and his buddy and the general manager of the wolves says, hey, Anthony, you guys have gotten to the Western finals the last couple of years. We did something we think is going to get you over the hump.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Why wouldn't you do your best to try to convince Kevin Durant to stay there? Doesn't Kevin Durant, Minnesota Timberwolf, give you like, Elijah and Toronto Raptor vibes? Just saying it ain't out loud. Patrick Ewing, Orlando Magic. I mean, we can go down the list, but you know what I'm saying? That's weird. But here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:49:29 If you make this deal, how in the hell do you spend? minute. Kevin Durant has to have an introductory press conference. Kevin Durant is going to have to answer questions when he's up in Minnesota. She's just say, yeah, it's a business and I'm here to win. Hopefully you didn't get too bad of an attitude. But Ross, let's be practical for a second. Forgetting about Kevin Durant. Just talk about anybody. If you get sent on a job assignment to a city you don't want to go to, if you've already got that built in your mind. Unless
Starting point is 00:50:05 it's just this most wonderful experience, you're going to probably say that, but in your heart to heart, you're probably only going to give 60%. Well, Luca Don't, you could tell Luca Don't just wanted to stay in Dallas. Of course, Lakers are a better landing spot. Yeah, I was going to say. But you could tell that he
Starting point is 00:50:21 wanted to be in Dallas, and you could tell in the press conference that, you know, when he was asked questions, that he thought he was going to be in Dallas for life. Damien Lillard, we mentioned, wanted to be in Miami, and they said it in Milwaukee. They said, you said Milwaukee? No, I said Miami. All right, Milwaukee.
Starting point is 00:50:38 He didn't want to be there. But he is. But it's easier to be there. Well, I guess the same situation. It was easy for Damon Lillard to go there because Janice was there. And it's also easy to go to Minnesota. Anthony Edwards is there. We get to play with a great young coach and Chris Finch and Aunt Edwards.
Starting point is 00:50:51 I think Noghreides, he's a free agent. But Lerby-O-Bair, they've got pieces. They've got good players. And they made the Western finals the last two years. Wham, wah, boo-hoo, and you're getting $54 million. See, that's the reason why I'm trying to, to piece this, why would Kevin Durant
Starting point is 00:51:04 exclude Minnesota for the mix? If Minnesota is an up-and-coming basketball team that is close but no cigar two straight ears. He doesn't want his brittle bones to snap in the cold. He's played in Oklahoma. He played in Brooklyn, which is cold. But that's New York City.
Starting point is 00:51:24 I mean, it is what it is. He's in Phoenix, and he listed San Antonio, Houston, and Miami. Yeah, apparently, he believes humidity is not an issue. Yes. What are they? Yeah. Humid subtropical, I think, is what he's looking for. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:35 I don't know. I mean, couldn't Minnesota. It's your calling. You're going to call a shot on this one. That's gut feel. Okay, so let's take it one more extent beyond that. If you're calling Minnesota,
Starting point is 00:51:49 does he then play their one and done, or does he go, wow, this is fun being with these guys? Yes, he goes, he goes, Kawhi Leonard style. One year and done. Says all the right things. Who's going to have all the caps space to sign them?
Starting point is 00:52:04 He'll be able to sign the biggest. deal back in Minnesota. You know what? My crystal ball is a little fuzzy that far out. I will go with Minnesota Timber Wolf. See, I didn't San Antonio originally. I don't want that to happen. I don't want that to happen either.
Starting point is 00:52:19 Actually, part of me wants it to be Houston. It does, you know, but I understand if it doesn't happen again, because you don't want a mortgage what has already been built here. Yeah, we talk about the Rockets trusting the process. The Spurs can trust the process, too. They just got Deerrin Fox. Wemby comes back.
Starting point is 00:52:38 Stefan Castle, as you mentioned. You have back-to-back rookies of the year. Yes. You have the... What number pick do they have? Two. Yeah. Remember they that?
Starting point is 00:52:47 They can trust the process. Dallas got one and San Antonio got two. Life's not fair. You know what? No, I don't think about it. I might even see San Antonio trust in the process more than even the rockets. That number two pick? I mean, truth be told, two to ten is a pretty seismic difference.
Starting point is 00:53:02 All right. 1114 on Sports Talk, 790. 713-212-5-7-9. Let's go into the scorecard the last night's Astros game and just brag about how badly they beat up on Oakland A's pitch. What does it matter with me? It's fine.
Starting point is 00:53:16 They were saying, let's go Oakland in the stands yesterday. They were? Yes. Hmm. By the way, there was a slip of the tongue on the Oakland A's television broadcast last night. I wasn't watching it. Well, you couldn't because we were in Houston.
Starting point is 00:53:31 I want you to listen to her during the break and then I want you to let me know if we can say it on, if we can use it on the ear or not. Okay. 7-1, 3, 2-1. Problem is we can't. I've already asked a question to Ross. I already know the answer to.
Starting point is 00:53:42 11.15 on Sports Talk 7-90. I just don't get it. It's coming up in the next segment. The Matt Thomas show with Ross. We'll have John Lucas coming up at 1230, talking some Rockets and NBA as well. With game number six, the NBA finals tonight. Phone lines are open for you on an anything goes holiday Thursday.
Starting point is 00:54:05 Happy Juneteenth to everyone out there. 713212-5-790 is the phone number. So can we play it or not? No. 7-13-212-5-7-90. So I was, we'll just put it this way. There was a slippage of the tongue in the A's broadcast yesterday, and you can find it an awful announcing because they found it.
Starting point is 00:54:25 Why don't you retweet it and tell people to find it at your Twitter account, Matt? See, that's a nice. No. Okay, fine. I'm going to retweet it. You do it. And you can find it. See, that's a nice.
Starting point is 00:54:33 No. Okay, fine. I'm going to retweet it. You do it. And you can find it on my Twitter. And then I'll retweet yours. Sports RV. You can't retweet my retweet.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Sure, I can. I can like it. Okay. Yeah. No, I'll just like the original one. All right. Coming up at the bottom of the hour, I just don't get it here on the radio program. This is where you get to call in and you're confused by things.
Starting point is 00:54:53 And we're trying to help you out. We have three different perspectives. We have a successful man like myself. We have whatever you are right now. And we've got the young and in Jonathan. and surviving, Matt, 16 years in this business. It's good. It ain't nothing. It ain't nothing. A lot of guys
Starting point is 00:55:10 would die for 16 years. People will die in for 16 months, apparently, some cases. All right, so the Astros win yesterday. I've always been bullish on the Altova 3,000 hit thing. Now, granted, he's going to have to have sustained success for several
Starting point is 00:55:27 more years. Health. Health, health, health, and health. That's number one key to me. Because he's going to, he can hit until he's 50. He's got the greatest hand-to-eye coordination of maybe anybody I've seen in an Astros uniform. Yeah. But yeah, if you miss 50 games a year because of a variety of ailments, you're going to have a hard time getting there. Now, thankfully, he hasn't had that issue at this point. But Rossi, he can still sock the baseball.
Starting point is 00:55:53 Yes, he can. Is he the great? I don't know the answer to this. I'm just throwing us out out there. Is he the greatest sub-5-10 hitter in? baseball history. There's got to be others. But I want... But I want to put him in some particular category. Hack Wilson, I think,
Starting point is 00:56:13 only had a few good years. See, you're making me look up Hack Wilson. You don't have Hack Wilson in the brain? At least I brought him up. You did. I'll give you credit for that. That's old Hack Wilson for the Chicago Cubs. Let's see. Hack Wilson listed at 5-6. Hack Wilson had a 56 home run year.
Starting point is 00:56:32 career OPS plus 144. Now, my computer's freezing. Otherwise, I'll get you Jose Al-Tube's career OPS plus. Ooh, 128. Okay, so the answer is no. It took you five seconds. But I got heckahawk. Wilson on the north side of Chicago,
Starting point is 00:56:50 he's the greatest diminutive slugger you've ever seen. Altube, three for four yesterday, three ribbies. His average now to 277. OPS is 764, which is well above league average. It is third on the team, right now behind Pena and Poretis. So here's how it works. Your top three hitters.
Starting point is 00:57:10 Actually, the OPS of Al-Tuvres is less than Cam Smiths, but there's been more plate appearances for Al-Tube. So that goes into some of it here. Toy Cannon. That would be Jimmy Wynn. Oh, he's 5'10. You can't be Toy Cannon. 5-10. He was the Toy Cannon.
Starting point is 00:57:32 You can't take that away from him. He rests. That's his name. Yeah. Okay. So then who else is short guys? I mean, Tony Kemp didn't have much of a career. I mean, we love Tony Kemp.
Starting point is 00:57:42 How tall was Pete Rose? I think, wouldn't he like six foot or something? I always look like a diminutive guy. Yeah. 5-11. Okay. So that's a little bit above what we're talking about. All right.
Starting point is 00:57:56 So if you all can help us out, give us some people that you would think are short. Joe Morgan. Ooh, Joe Morgan's a great call. That's from Google. I stole it from Google. That's okay. You got... Hack Wilson, I named.
Starting point is 00:58:06 That should give me some credit. Yeah, you get a hack because I think I wasn't going to think about a hack. Five, seven, a Joe Morgan. Career OPS Plus 132. Two-time MVP. 22 seasons, by the way.
Starting point is 00:58:21 Woo! Yeah, I wonder what his prime OPS Plus was. Probably a lot better. Got a little worse. How many hits the gentleman looking at Joe Morgan's hit total? He finished with 2,517 hits. That's it.
Starting point is 00:58:33 Get together, Joe Morgan. He can't. He's not, and there's no possible chance he can do that. It's like a missed or 3,000 situation. He's going to go back out there. No, not at all. No, wouldn't even be close. Not a bad effort. But no, that would be no chance of that. By the way, coming up at 1220 today, we have the, you found a list. Did you not? Oh, I did. It was from our friends at Barstool Sports of the greatest player for every franchise. there's only one player active in baseball who is considered by them the best player in franchise history. Okay.
Starting point is 00:59:09 And we'll get that coming up at 1220 today because we got to, I just don't get it coming up now. That could be I just don't get it that you have a holiday on a Thursday. Don't you? I mean, June 19 moves around. Yeah, I mean, it happens. July 4th is on a Friday and it's not always on a Friday. I told you one of the dumbest things I ever thought of was that Christmas always had to be on a Friday. they should know man actually i used to the same thing man they should do that they should do that
Starting point is 00:59:35 you know when i first thought of that jonathan just wasn't born on the 25th anyways staying with me in this i the reason why i thought that was because it felt like many years over friday and then we had a christmas day game last year on a wednesday where the texans play and i'm like what are doing playing christmas on a wednesday you don't have christmas on josember 25 so you said again i told you i learned things that uh you know i can't i can't separate pacif Benettar and Joan Jett? These are just things I fight with all the time. Incredible.
Starting point is 01:00:05 Which you don't believe it or not today is Pat Benatar. If it's not Pat Benatar, it's Joan Jett. That would be a bad idea. That's actually pretty fun. That sounds like a lot of work. You can do it. I like to make stuff up. Okay, you do Pat or Joan?
Starting point is 01:00:19 Yeah. Pat believe it. If it's not, it's Joan. That's easy. That's easy. Why does Joan get relegated to not? Okay, well then because we played the Pat song. Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:28 we can do jump pat just kidding are both alive we're gonna do the we're gonna do the song yes we're doing that again in noon today it's a good song
Starting point is 01:00:39 it's a banger it's okay I didn't realize how short it was I thought it was a lot longer song it's only like two I thought it was 17 minutes yeah you did not think it was 17 minutes in a gotta divita
Starting point is 01:00:48 don't listen to him you know if you're a DJ you play three songs stairway to heaven American pie In Agata de Vita Inagata de Vita And anything with James Brown.
Starting point is 01:01:01 He can make any song make... You know what? I'll pay to get my money's worth on a jukebox. B.B. King's Lucille. It's quite nice. It's 10 minutes long. You get your money's worth on the jukebox. One time I was at a bar and somebody went to the back and fast forward.
Starting point is 01:01:15 They skipped my song. I was like, I want my money back. Disrespectful. I know. Were you going to cut a rug on the floor with Lucille? No, I think it's a good song. Get your money's worth of jukebox. Okay.
Starting point is 01:01:27 All right. What don't you get? Maybe you don't get this radio show. I mean, there's been a lot of others that agree with you. We're going to hear Joan Jett, Hack Wilson, and B.B. Kings, Lucille, in one segment. What other show, Matt, I challenge you. And again, you could find other shows that bring you better content, but we brought ours. 713-1-2-5-7-90.
Starting point is 01:01:50 If there's anything in your life you don't get, whether it's sports-related or life-related, you've got three different perspectives coming to you next here on Sports Talk 7-9. That's one That's two Ross do you want a third I don't know I'm scared You told me not to look at the internet
Starting point is 01:02:16 Say can I get a third Can I get a third? No Okay What sport? Basketball Basketball Two
Starting point is 01:02:30 Kevin Durant would be way more Yep Is it rocket specifically? Yes Good or bad Good Okay. An extension for E. Medoca. That is correct.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Yes. Rockets coach E. Medoca has agreed to a long-term extension with a franchise that makes him one of the highest paid NBA coaches. This is a gut feeling hit for me, by the way. Good for him. This is no-brainer. Especially when the Knicks thing got floated out. He's no-brainer. He's getting re-upped.
Starting point is 01:03:01 His initial deal was four years for $28.5 million. So that's seven. millie plus a year. And the new extension is not public? I don't think, not from Shams. Okay. So, I don't know, it's funny. You don't, it takes a little longer to figure out coaches because I don't think they
Starting point is 01:03:23 think them public. Unless, unless they want to offer that up. So there you go. Eme Adoka. I mean, let's, let's put the cards on the table. The Knicks call? Mm-hmm. They ain't the only ones thinking about E. Mae Adokin down the road.
Starting point is 01:03:40 He's a great coach. One of the five best coaches in basketball, if you ask me. Yeah, yeah. Good for him. So E. May Adokin's got himself a new extension. Great. Players love him. He signed on the dotted line, so things sound like things are going well over there.
Starting point is 01:03:55 In Rocketville. $7 million. I wonder if he's hitting the 10 spot. Probably. Good for him. But think about it. I mean, if you're paying players 34, 40, 50, 60 million dollars.
Starting point is 01:04:08 What's 10 million to a coach that, you know? But, um, hmm. A coaching does matter in basketball, of course. But it's funny. We ran through the list of like all the guys winning coach of the year and how they'd all been fired basically. That's right. That's right. No coach of the year for you to hook up.
Starting point is 01:04:24 All right. 1135. Hit the music please, Jonathan. This is a segment. Oh, where's our AI jam? Yeah, do we have the AI jam? No, sorry. Don't worry about it.
Starting point is 01:04:37 It's too long. Oh, okay. He's going to putting it in there. Okay. That's fine. Do you have something in your life That you just don't get No need to worry
Starting point is 01:04:51 No need to fret We will discuss the topics To see if we comprehend The things that may confuse our friends It's time to say I just don't get it Nice And now the music
Starting point is 01:05:07 Doon doom Doom All right This is the segment where you call in About your life And what we can do to help you If you just don't get something Okay
Starting point is 01:05:15 Jonathan you gave us nothing yesterday during shut your bomb ass up. So today we're letting you go first. I'm going to ask you guys, I don't understand, and this is about women, so just, just I don't understand why women
Starting point is 01:05:32 wear these thick, huge wedges everywhere. I think that's the most I don't understand the, I don't know if that was with you guys when they're growing up or the style or whatever. And now now he's on top of the wedges. It's all the lip filler, the Botox.
Starting point is 01:05:47 the fake eyelashes. It's like we're living in, you know, that haunted wax museum. It's like, I don't know. You can't tell what a person is a real person. You don't know what their race is not. They just all look the same. I don't understand it.
Starting point is 01:06:05 I don't get it. It's a nice, easy for one for me, my man. I totally get it. It is the internal, internal. It is the never-ending quest to remain young. simply put. Well, I'll tell you insecurity.
Starting point is 01:06:20 Do you guys feel like you need to be younger? No, guys don't feel that way typically. Like some guys get work done. They get you put in, put hair dye. They dye their grays. Yeah, I mean, I think putting a black hair color or blonde or whatever in your hair is a sign
Starting point is 01:06:34 of not wanting to get older. Yeah, it happens to guys too. I would say it's just more and it's not even really to me, it's not even women for men. It's women to other women. If we're being, if we're getting real talk here. I just don't get it.
Starting point is 01:06:48 How many times you're going out with your lady or something, you're like, oh, yeah, I don't care how you look. You don't have to do your hair. And she's like doing makeup for 25 minutes. And you're like, what are we doing? I said you don't have to do makeup. Let's go. But it's for her and for, I think, women to look at other women, I think.
Starting point is 01:07:03 Yeah, there's a constant competition. When that's from, that's women that are 23 years old and that are 53 years old. It's like, there's a crisp rock bit. or he's like women are the most dishonest people on earth he's like
Starting point is 01:07:17 you're not that tall you're wearing heels you're not that not that tall you're wearing makeup your face doesn't look like that it's a funny little bit but
Starting point is 01:07:23 I guess it should be there you didn't think it's okay I mean it's a chuckle Chris Rock bit I'm just saying Chris Rock is funny by the way I think so oh no no no no
Starting point is 01:07:34 Chris Rock pound for pound I mean I would have Obviously Chris Rock does the bit better than I do Have we ever done A Fantasy 5 of Best Stand up comedians? Yes, you lost. You took Lisa Lampinelli and Carrot Top. Caratop was funny this past weekend, I got to say. But he's not one of
Starting point is 01:07:49 the five greatest of all time. He's not one of the people that have the plasticitis too. I just don't get it. I just understand. See, you were talking about that day. I get it. Yeah, it's insecurity and sometimes. But don't you think growing older is a sign of natural insecurity? I think it's in, absolutely. People aren't comfortable in their age. It's most people, I wouldn't say 10 out of 10, but I'd say 8 out of 10 people worried about looking and getting older. The only time I ever look at myself and go, God, I'm
Starting point is 01:08:17 getting old is in my face. You're going to get some work done? No, but I'm just saying that I'm like, but do you ever take pride in like, I look like, I look like, I'm like, daily, daily. Every day. Matt Thomas is the last person asked if you think he thinks he's good looking. Shut up, both of you.
Starting point is 01:08:36 Yeah, I get it. So I'll say, Jonathan, I absolutely get it. I think people are insecure about their looks and growing old is a very difficult part of the process. And it's, I will say this, it may be vain, but it's totally natural because it's, it's with
Starting point is 01:08:51 just about everybody. We're all worried about looking older. Growing older and getting, and looking older. And the lip filler thing is out of control. Thank you. I think it's the Kardashians. Could be. Right, right. Everyone wants to look like a Kardashian. Like Matt, would you let your daughters get lip filler and stuff?
Starting point is 01:09:09 I came home and they had like some jumbo, you know. Excuse me? Jumbo lips. You know the point I make it. Don't make this weird. At a certain point I have to let them be adults, but I would not encourage it. And certainly when she's into my house and spending money of mine that she didn't earn, if she wants to go get a job and spend her money on that, I wouldn't be for it, but I wouldn't hold her against it.
Starting point is 01:09:35 But no, I'm not spending my own personal money for a 17-year-old to get for. kind of stuff done. But I mean, I'm just telling you, look, I'm in my 50s, my wife's in her 50s, our friends are in our 40s and 50s. I can go to any party that I go to and probably eight of the 10 women have had something done, whether it's LIPO or whether it's... Oh, it's everywhere. Are you kidding me? The Kwood's probably pretty good. Yeah. In the woodlands. Probably worse in the woodlands. Oh, yeah. Cyprus? Big money out in Cyprus? Yeah. But wait, you need to start shaming Cyprus. They got a lot of money out there, too.
Starting point is 01:10:11 You still those big old houses in Cyprus now? No, I don't know. I haven't been on 290 in like three years. Well, you're consider yourself blessed. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-21-5-7-90. Chad is with us. Chad, what don't you get, my friend?
Starting point is 01:10:29 Okay, it's on the John Boy stuff. So y'all said that you hadn't heard much about him. He's got a pretty big YouTube bit. A bunch of stuff he does, it's kind of funny. I still listen to him. I don't care about cheating anymore. I get booed at Bush Gardens when I wear my yord on jersey. But some of the stuff he does is bad lip reading.
Starting point is 01:10:50 He will lip read calls on the field, coaches, players getting mad at umpires. And it's always critical of the umpires. How did the MLB agree to this? Because MLB, Chad, unfortunately, another one of the situations, I get it. MLB has had a difficult time getting a hold of younger viewers and younger fans of the sport. And they think that the John Boy group, largely East Coast, largely New York in the number one media market and largely under the age of 30 is a way to attract people to their sport. So anything that MLB and John Boy collaborate together with, I get it because MLB can't do it on their own. They need to get John Boy involved.
Starting point is 01:11:37 there'll be nothing that John Boy will be able to have to change because I guarantee if you're John Boy and MLB comes in and says we want to buy part of your property first of all they're ecstatic but John Boy is going to say well wait a minute what made us successful is who we are and how we put out material and put out media and put out tweets and do all our socials we can't change it
Starting point is 01:11:59 MLB is like that's fine here's 10% it's it's awful it's hypocrisy it's fine it's mostly Yankees fans. I still don't get it. It's not the right avenue they should have gone. The other day that was here. Say again? We had a supporter of John Boy Media the other day. Who? Some younger people still watch their content.
Starting point is 01:12:18 A friend yesterday. Who's friend? Oh. Oh, the guy was watching the show? Yeah, he was. Nico? Yeah, he liked the Dodgers fan. But I thought they were, you know, I was just, you guys said no one care. I'm just saying, I didn't know people liked him. He was a big, like he followed him. He knew everything about it.
Starting point is 01:12:35 Yeah, he also likes the Dodgers. And the heat. Wait a minute. Should we just call him Captain Banwagon or what? And the Real Madrid, Real Madrid, which is like the biggest European Evil Empire club,
Starting point is 01:12:46 is the Real Madrid. That's like liking the Yankees. That's why I'm team Liverpool. Liverpool is a pretty big power too, but, you know, thank you. We're doing our best. They're reigning champs.
Starting point is 01:12:59 That's great. All right. If you have something you don't get, we're here for you. 713-212-5-790. 713-212-5-790. The news and noon is coming up, and again, if you just joined us,
Starting point is 01:13:12 anywhere the hell have you been. Be damn glad to have you and C. E-Madocca's got a new contract extension that will keep him as one of the top-paid coaches in the association after the Rockets' 52 game win of a year ago. When season, 7-13-212-5-790. I wouldn't normally ask you to follow Ross on Twitter. Matter of fact, I wouldn't follow him,
Starting point is 01:13:41 But go to his Twitter account. He does have a fight with Adrian Peterson in a poker room. It's pretty funny. It's from TMZ Sports. Can I just tell you I've shaken, I always say this to you, but it's different audiences, different days. I've shaken, shook on or shaken? Shaken. Shaken.
Starting point is 01:13:57 Adrian Peterson. He shook his hand. I shook his hand twice. The bones were cracking in my hand every time I shook. Yeah, he's legendary for a very strong grip. And quite frankly, he gets pieced up in this video. I'm surprised. whoever this guy is.
Starting point is 01:14:11 First of all, if Adrian Peterson starts running at me, I'm running away. Correct. And likely getting caught, of course. Because he did a, we were, I was doing a show in Minneapolis, and we were at a Rick's sporting, Rick's Roading Woods. Oh, my gosh. And he did an appearance there, and I went and shook his hand when he got there. And I was like, I can't move my right hand. And I'm not trying to embellish.
Starting point is 01:14:37 It was Ross, the most. I mean, I'll be 98 years old. You'll be feeding pudding to me in the home, and I'll be telling you, you'll be asking me who the hardest handshake was in my entire life, and I will say Adrian Peterson. Yeah, won't even be close. This guy must have boxing training or something. He's got a pretty good stance.
Starting point is 01:14:56 He's got a clean one on him, too. He's throwing counter rights. He's ducking back. That's how they tell you, you rock back, and then come forward with your right. That's what he's doing. This dude must have got some training. And then Adrian Peterson slips and falls. and then he gets caught.
Starting point is 01:15:12 I thought once he got him in the corner, it was over. This guy did pretty good. I would not be fighting Adrian Peterson. And then my favorite part of the video is that, and this is what happens when you get a room full of dudes. Nice referee, by the way. Everyone just kind of, yeah, the security guard, he's like, oh, whatever, let him fight.
Starting point is 01:15:30 And see, that's what I want to do. If there's two people who want to slug it out, who want to throw hands, and nobody's got a knife for a gun, let them do it. Let them fight. And then if somebody's being pummel, then you grab them and you pull them off of them.
Starting point is 01:15:43 Once one guy starts getting knocked out and starts seeing stars, then yeah, you pull them off of them and then you shake hands and you move on with your life. That's how it was back in the day. That's what they do in the hockey. They let them fight. Yeah, exactly. That's what they should do for Draymond. And when the first tooth is in the air, then you call it a day.
Starting point is 01:16:00 Yeah, that's true. You go try to find it when you're spitting chicklets. Go pick them up. By the way, why do you want to be the referee in that situation? You're going to get beat as bad as other two guys. Exactly. So I love that now they try to break it up at first, but then they're like, all right, let him fight. Kenneth on 790. Kenneth, what don't you get my man? That's about these nicks, man. Well, I just don't get here.
Starting point is 01:16:24 You got a coach that took you somewhere. You ain't been in 25 years. And you're flying him with no damn plan and then you turn around. And it's like, you know, you rock or something, you know. Oh, we may want a female adult who the hell you think you are, man. I just don't get this, man. What were they thinking, Nate? You know what? Kenneth? I just don't get it either.
Starting point is 01:16:48 I don't either. You figured when you fire Tibbs, I mean, multiple time coach of the year and got you to the East Finals? And sure, it wasn't perfect. People thought he was a little too rigid. But you knew that the day you hired him. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:17:08 You got to have a plan in place. He gets the full, public backing. Now, maybe Jalen Brunson privately was like, no, this guy's got to go. Then I would get it. And by the way, that happens a lot. A lot of coaches will publicly say one thing and probably say two things. But funny, because Jalen Brunson
Starting point is 01:17:23 was asked about that as soon as they lost their Eastern Final Indiana, and it was like, no, that's our guy. He's the reason why we are where we are, and then he gets fire like the next day. So, and my thought is, you don't make a move like this without getting Jalen Brunson's input on that.
Starting point is 01:17:39 So. Yeah, I get it. I don't get it. I don't know what the Knicks are doing. But whatever. All right. Last call for anybody. I just don't get it. You guys? Yeah. I didn't get you to do mine. What you got? Why am I getting like 10 to 15? I understand bots and spam are a part of social media. But why does it continue to happen? Who is responding to these messages? I get 10 to 15 DMs, not just from you guys' wives and girlfriends, but from spam bots. I'm just, just kidding, by the way. Trevor, you heard that? Trevor, it's the real.
Starting point is 01:18:20 And apparently they're fantastic. I was just a joke reference from yesterday. No, why why am I getting, why is this happening? I don't get it. How is this unchecked? Who are these people that are signing up? And a lot of times it's like verified account. Don't you have to pay money
Starting point is 01:18:36 to Elon Musk to get this verified account? Do they just put like a dummy credit card and then it gets declined so they can do it for a month? I don't understand. So I've been blocking the people every time I can't and it doesn't help because I think part of the reason why I get them is because there are followers that I that slip through and they wind up in the in the bot system figures it out and you guys put the like block other accounts too like it says block and you can block other accounts about might be associated with oh no where's that at I want that button I know for a fact on Instagram you can definitely say I'm more talking about the old X platform uh they might have changed
Starting point is 01:19:07 I know you could though let's see yeah it's ridiculous it's like hey here's my contact info Are people clicking these links? What's wrong with you? They must be. Nobody would be farming out all these bots if they weren't getting some of y'all in your credit card information. Stop clicking on these bots, folks. Correct. Use your head.
Starting point is 01:19:31 The hot young lady in lingerie is not reaching out to you because she loves you. It's a bot. And she doesn't listen to show. You can go check her picks out and then then block. But they're not real pigs. Is there somebody? I guess, yeah. They don't AI those, those things.
Starting point is 01:19:49 All right, that's it for this week's. I don't have anything. I, I use, I've got everything. What? Yeah. I think this is, I think this is unprecedented in the history of the show. I don't get Amish people. Why did you just say?
Starting point is 01:20:02 Because I just saw a video just now, they built a entire barn. From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. it was done. I don't, and I'm young. I don't know. Do they just, they're just rural people that live in America and they just built people? Yeah, they just, they reject modernity or whatever you would call it, technology. It's just a religious thing as well. Obviously, they're born into it.
Starting point is 01:20:30 I'm going to let you go with this. I have zero comment. I mean, I don't know a whole lot about the inner workings of the, of the Amic. They make great, they make great furniture. I saw, I saw a tweet the other day or it was a video or Instagram or something like that where, yeah, some guy hired them to build a deck on his house. See, I seen the exact same thing too You saw a barn and a deck? Yeah, I saw two videos.
Starting point is 01:20:50 He was like, these guys aren't getting this deck done by, they're like, yeah, we'll get it done by sundown. And then they had it done. And it was just two of them. These guys are incredible hard workers. Now, they don't drink. No. They don't use electricity. Oh, no, we did a, we did a non-floor story one time.
Starting point is 01:21:06 They got busted with like a pack of Coorset light on the porcid buggy. They didn't even spend like for the expensive stuff. So I don't know if they dream. Maybe they're not supposed to drink. And it was like some rogue kids. By the way, I just checked my Twitter account. I have muted 583 accounts. Oh, I've muted over 2,500.
Starting point is 01:21:22 I have blocked 6,737 accounts. Oh, wow. And only about 50 of them are real people. Most of the accounts I block are... 50? Are just... It could be more than that. I've had at least 50 people tell me you've blocked them so they can get unblock, get unblocked.
Starting point is 01:21:42 All they got to do is just pretend they're, if they're real, then I'll follow, or at least let them follow me. It hasn't happened a while, though. Yeah, I'm saying. Thank you. All right, 1158. The news at noon is coming up. We've got the Astros. A little bit of rocket news.
Starting point is 01:21:55 Yes. Do we have anything on Kevin Durant? You'll find out with the news at noon after we hear from Pat Benatar. And one of the goats' songs, apparently she didn't sing anymore. 1158 on Sports Talk 790. This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Second straight day, Rossie. for the local nine to get double digits and runs.
Starting point is 01:22:25 And the Astros now lead by five and a half games in the American League West. The second best record in the American League. By the way, you know what? The Angels, oh, this is going to be good. I thought the series of the Yankees was over with. They're playing a day game. Then they're going to fly five hours from L.A., from New York. to L.A. after the game to play the Astros tomorrow night.
Starting point is 01:22:54 This is called a fat and happy road trip sports RV. Advantage Astros. Is that what you're saying? That's what I'm saying. They don't play until nine. Seven. Oh, that's true. Seven local time. There you go. No, 638 because I got to do the on-deck show and do the post game. Oh, I'm talking about tonight, the Astros. Yeah. Yeah, they're fine.
Starting point is 01:23:15 You only got an hour flight between Sacramento and in Anaheim. It's still a late game. Day game would be better. It'd be great. Actually, it would be 305, which means Adams would have a day off today. Yeah, that would also mean it's like 500 degrees in Sacramento. Yeah, it's not great. Nobody wants that. All right, time now for the news at noon.
Starting point is 01:23:36 And with that, we present to you the one and only man who will not stalk your girlfriend. In Instagram, it's Rossville. Maybe not. Thank you, Matt. No, I won't. I don't stock anybody. All right. Let's start with the news.
Starting point is 01:23:48 Yes, you played the highlights from the Astros. taking out the trash with the A's. They're 30 and 46 on the season. Astros 43 and 31. Frumber Valdez was quality despite five walks for Framber. Still just five hits. Two earned runs. Three strikeouts for him on 97 pitches.
Starting point is 01:24:11 He also had a wild pitch. Not the most efficient evening for him, but he was able to get some double plays as well. to get out of some trouble. As he has a 3.09 ERA on the season, Matt. Frabo Valdez is All-Starworthy. He's all-star worthy. He's also once again doing something he did a couple of years ago,
Starting point is 01:24:32 giving you back to back, to back, the back, quality starts. 20 hits for the Astros. Four different Astros, excuse me. Is this correct? Yes, five different Astros had three hits, Matt, including Jake Myers, who has his. his average, back to up to up to 300 on the season. But Jose Altuve,
Starting point is 01:24:57 how about him? He's swinging a hot bat. 277 is average. OPS up to 765. He will be shortly catching Jeff Bagwell on the Astros all-time hit list. He has 2309.
Starting point is 01:25:13 Jeff Baguil has 230014. By the way, Barstool has a list of the greatest players for each individual team. And we will tell you who they think the Astros are. Greatest player of all time is coming up in about 12 minutes from now.
Starting point is 01:25:28 All right. Elsewhere in the news at noon, we mentioned this, some breaking news from the last hour. Rockets head coach email Adoka agreeing to a long-term contract extension that will make him one of the highest paid coaches in the NBA, according to Sham Sharani of ESPN.
Starting point is 01:25:45 He was already making $7 million in change per year. He was finishing year. He just finished year two of his four-year deal. So he's got two years left on the current deal. that can be torn up obviously because there's no rules about that and putting him down in the upper echelon and my guess it'll be a matter of only not when but maybe a little bit of if and a little bit of win
Starting point is 01:26:04 we found out how much it is but it only matter because you know the cap on the coaches I don't care he's getting paid good for him and by the way don't ever call on him he's not available bye how much does he think does he send a thank you letter to the New York Knicks for expressing interest in his services maybe upping the dollar amount the reality is it didn't hurt it did not hurt that E. May was getting phone calls. And again, my guess is if you're Chris Finch,
Starting point is 01:26:27 you're doing the exact same thing in Minneapolis right now with the Timberwolves. She's saying, yeah, the New York Knicks. And Jason Kitt, too, probably in Dallas. Don't they need some positive PR? I would think so. I would think so. Matt, how much are you following the College World Series? If you want to talk about the final three plays of the game last night,
Starting point is 01:26:45 I'm quite a bit. Arkansas eliminated from the College World Series. some are calling it the biggest choke in college world series history. Two outs, two on. A ball hit to left field. And I can't remember the left fielder's name. It doesn't matter. But actually, you're going to talk about the play before that.
Starting point is 01:27:04 Go ahead. The play before that. First and second, one out. Ground ball to the shortstop. Not guaranteed, but more than likely going to be turning a double play, Arkansas wins the game. Instead, the shortstop throws the ball. to third base gets the lead out.
Starting point is 01:27:22 Instead of getting two outs, he only gets one. And then that's when the big error happens in left field. Big error happened in left field. And then LSU walked it off there, going into the championship series. Also in that walkoff, the ball off the glove of the second baseman. He could have caught it for the third out. And then they would have went to extras. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:48 College baseball doesn't move the next. needle, but if any fan base that doesn't deserve any additional breaks, it's LSU. I mean, my God. Seriously. They should have lost. They should have been embarrassed. I don't want to hear from Gordy and the people up here if they get eight. Gordy, you know,
Starting point is 01:28:04 Gordy would do. He'd walk in, he would talk normally, and then he starts raising his voice when LSU comes in. Hey, boy, about this, how about this? No, we're talking about our disdain for your school. He'd be wearing an LSU championship t-shirt. I'm telling you, does he have? How many graphic teas are in his
Starting point is 01:28:20 closet. Yeah, you guys complain about how I don't pay for shirts. I don't think I've seen a shirt Gordy paid for in probably 15 years. No, he pays for all those. Does he really? Nobody's paying for that. Yeah, he's got Ed Ogeron, ugly sweaters. He's not getting those free from anyone. Okay, well, that name he needs to readjust his budget then. And he's got those new Nike Airmax with the Astro City Connect.
Starting point is 01:28:40 Them puppies are like one. What is he? What kind of site? You know what? Man, this is locked on SEC cash. We don't have a marketing budget, but we got Gordy budget and it's good. Those bad boys are like a hundred. Buck 70, man. Yeah, all I'm saying is Go Coastal Carolina. LSU is probably going to win
Starting point is 01:28:57 another one. What are you rooting for? I'm rooting against LSU. Say go coastal. Go coastal. Carolina. What do they call it? They're not the Shanta Clears, are they?
Starting point is 01:29:08 Who's the Shanticleers? I don't know. I thought they were the Shanticleers. Okay, are they? They're not the Warhawks. Okay, it is the Coast of Carolina. Okay. Go Shanticleers.
Starting point is 01:29:20 Chanticleers for life. Harder school to get into. Coastal Carolina or LSU. I'm going to say LSU, but I don't know. John's a harder school to get into LSU or SFA. LSU. Why don't you get to shame him? Acceptance rate at LSU?
Starting point is 01:29:45 100%. 74%. No way. You mean, I thought the rule would be had teeth you got in. then you've got to have shoes and that rules a lot of people out. That does run. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:57 80% for the coastal Carolina Chanticleers. All right. Anything else? Yeah, real quickly, I was going to mention, Matt. Your favorite artist, Drake, apparently, is really going through it this month in terms of sports betting.
Starting point is 01:30:12 He was posting some screenshots of his stake account, which is a sports betting platform. Yeah, in Canada? This month, he has wager $124 million in sports betting. He is down $8.2 million just in this month. Betting a lot on the NBA finals.
Starting point is 01:30:42 Okay, I don't know what is his... His net worth? I don't know. Hundreds of millions, I would guess. You're talking about endorsements, money. He's one of the highest selling artists of all times. So if you look at his tax return, what do you think his tax return was? Oh, it's a mess.
Starting point is 01:30:56 Is it fit? And plus he's in Canada. Don't they take a lot of money? Did he make $50 million this past year? This past year, probably. Okay, so relatively speaking, 1.8.8 is not a lot. No, 8.2 million dollars. 8.6.
Starting point is 01:31:08 Yes, it is. I don't care who you are. So $8.2 million is a lot of money. That's 15% of his salary if he made $50 million a year. Yeah. I could not take 15% of my salary and bet it on sports and live a normal life. Yeah. I know.
Starting point is 01:31:24 The famous. this actor we knew once new is now spiraling. It's unfortunate. And he's still yet to make an appearance on Rockets Radio in Toronto. You're trying to get him on? I've tried many years. Really? With no success.
Starting point is 01:31:36 I'm just putting Drake net worth. $250 million says Bored Panda, whatever website that is. $250 out of eight minutes. I mean, it's a lot. It's a staying. Yeah, you got to stop. You got to stop betting on sports, Drake.
Starting point is 01:31:49 Although he does have a sponsorship deal with stake, so it is a possibility that not all this is actual losses. Could be getting a talent fee for doing it. He's got $600,000 on the Thunder to beat the Pacers in game six. And another $200,000 for the margin to be six to ten points. In Indiana? Wow. I think the, yeah, well, Tyrese Halliburton's game-time decision.
Starting point is 01:32:12 Yeah, he's going to play. I think, I bet you he plays. This is a little tip, folks, from somebody who loses its sports betting alone. Sure. But I always feel like they don't account, they say, oh, Halliburie is playing. We're going to keep the line here. I think they don't account enough for how effective he's going to be. So I'm just saying,
Starting point is 01:32:31 Thunder minus the points, in my opinion. Thunder, my opinion, win tonight. Angels up 1-0 at the Yankees. Mike Trout. There's a drive. Deep love. It is Michael Trout, who's not as good as Michael Brantley. According to some.
Starting point is 01:32:51 12.15, and that is the news at noon. Barstool Sports says they know who the greatest astro of all time is. We'll tell you who that is next. All right. I'm not a barstool guy. I don't respect them. I don't respect John Boy. I just don't bombastic, crazy, not thought-provoking media.
Starting point is 01:33:14 I'm no interest in. Some people say that may be their show, but that's to each his own. I think we are at least, we make you think a little bit. Thought-provoking. Yeah. Like, where does one get? a mask to put down a... Before you guys saw that point,
Starting point is 01:33:25 I had to call it, ask a question for you guys. Yes, sir. And they wanted to know about the college world series and why they put the extra green bag on the first base to run them. They just added that to sport to make sure there would be fewer collisions between first basemen and runners.
Starting point is 01:33:38 It's safety. They talked about doing in major league baseball. I think they should do it. It would avoid... Sometimes there's collisions, yeah. Yeah, it would avoid guys running inside the bag at first base. Yeah, very simple.
Starting point is 01:33:49 Yeah, I think it's a great idea. And it does. And it's a pitch clock in college world. Is it the same clock as Major League Baseball? I don't watch any college baseball. Yeah, Texas got eliminated rather early, so I haven't been paying attention either. All right. Okay, so Barstool puts out its list of the greatest of particular teams.
Starting point is 01:34:09 Now, we're not going to do all 30. We'll do a handful. It's a guy named Chris Clemmer of Barstool. Okay, and this is the greatest player of that franchise's history? He puts the greatest players in every franchise's history. Made a list. Okay. Let's go, let's see how well I do on this. By the way, John Lucas is going to join us in about 10 minutes.
Starting point is 01:34:31 Give me a team that you think I should probably have a pretty good chance at. A good chance? Let's start with the division. Mariners. Ken Griffey. Yes, correct. I was going either Griffey or Ich. A's. Got to be Griffe because he was there a long.
Starting point is 01:34:52 A pitcher or hitter. It is a position player. Mark McGuire. No Earlier I'm assuming He played there Yeah earlier but also Kind of around the same time
Starting point is 01:35:09 Not Carney Lanceford Uh More hint And we'll move on I'll give you the easiest hint of all Go ahead He played there four different times With the athletics
Starting point is 01:35:23 Oh Ricky Andrews Yes Okay that makes sense Okay Angels Rod Carew No Not Mike Trout
Starting point is 01:35:34 Mike Trout. Really? For as much as often as he's been injured. He's like a four-time MVP. Okay. It's been so long since he was those days. Okay. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 01:35:44 All right. So he's the only active player among these 30? That is correct. Okay. Which means who did they? Well, we just do Rangers real quick. Greatest Ranger of all time? Ooh.
Starting point is 01:35:58 I'm going to go Raphael Palmero? No, but around that era. Will Clark No I'm trying to think of a good hint Oh, former Astro Former Astro Not Ken Caminetti
Starting point is 01:36:18 Um Former Astro This feels like I should know this Former Astro He was an Astro at the end of his career Not Nolan Ryan No Uh
Starting point is 01:36:33 First letter of his name First letter of his first name I'll go He mostly went by a nickname there Padreggis Okay I figured it out Okay All right
Starting point is 01:36:42 So now we go to the Astros Yes And you know how I feel about Joseo Tube The greatest Astro of him all Except he's the worst base runner In Astros history Mm-hmm
Starting point is 01:36:52 So I mean that That could ultimately hurt you But I don't think it does Because of the fact that Not only is he going to get close to 3,000 hits He's been a multiple-lamp All-Star
Starting point is 01:37:02 He's been a batting champion And he has a Most importantly He has a fantastic postseason record, which puts him over the top of the other two candidates, in my opinion. Yes. They list Craig Bizio or Jeff Bagwell.
Starting point is 01:37:14 And there is a paragraph on this. You can make the case for either Bagua or Bigio, I'm more of a Bigio guy, but I understand Bagwell people. Can Al-Tuvae catch them? When you consider postseason success, you can make the case that El Tube is already the greatest player in Astros. So really, he's basically towing the line on all three.
Starting point is 01:37:35 of the guys. He's, he's, he's not, they're not, that, that guy is saying you can go with either one of the three. Yeah, but he lists Bizio as his pick. I'll go with Bagu. I would get, my, my list, and I'm knowing it's ever going to change, Altuve 1, Bagwell, 2, Bigio 3. Yordon can get in there. And Jake Myers for. Cam Smith. Somebody used to work with us, said that Yorda asked, Arboros will be the greatest astor of all time. Well, he got to get on the field a little bit more. Here's the problem. He's never going to be that because he's going to And look, I don't want you to get mad at me. But he has an IH.
Starting point is 01:38:11 He has an injury history that is over multiple seasons. Yes. I go with Bagwell because he is now the all-time, I believe the OPS Plus leader all-time is Yordon. Number two is Bagwell. I go with Bagwell because he's the all-time OPS Plus leader, 449 home runs, 30-30 guy. multiple, he got a 30-30 season, correct?
Starting point is 01:38:36 He got multiple 20-20 seasons, great base runner, gold Glover at first. Yeah. Yeah. The only reason why I could, if you just took strictly regular season numbers, I'd probably actually lean towards Bagwell. But postseason to me is a huge component of it. By the way, it is raining in New York, which means there could be a delay, which means the ages get back in later tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:38:58 That's great. Yeah, look, the postseason record, absolutely. is a blight on Bagwell's record. Early on, I mean, he was getting shut down by, he carved up by the great Atlanta Braves teams of the 90s.
Starting point is 01:39:14 Yep. The greatest rotations in history. Yep. And then he was bad late in his career. Yeah. He was old. In 0405, his shoulder didn't work. All right, real quick, a few more.
Starting point is 01:39:24 Mickey Mantle for the Yankees. Am I right on that one? Oh, let me look. No, I already know that one. It's Babe Ruth. Okay. Greatest Dodger of all time. Oh
Starting point is 01:39:35 pitcher? For some reason it is not showing up. Oh, okay. We'll take a time. I'm having issues with my... We'll have a time. We've got John Lucas going to join us a couple minutes here.
Starting point is 01:39:46 1228, Sports Talk 790. 1232. It is Matt and Ross with you on Sports Talk 790. Joining us right now is one of the great basketball minds. One of the best human beings you'll ever get the chance to talk to, listen to. And he's also a six-time. winner of the Steve Harvey Lookalike Club, John Lucas with us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Where the hell have you been? I've been trying to chase you down for years. Where are you doing?
Starting point is 01:40:14 How are you doing Matt Thomas? I'm very good. Everything's good. That's good. Hey, you got to listen to you on the radio doing Rocky games. Good. I get to see you. Good. Good. Good. Hey, you got a big golf tournament coming up on Monday. Tell us what it's all about because it's a very, very worthwhile cause. Well, it's called the John Lucas Foundation. And in that group is JL3 Elite, which are groups of basketball teams that play all over the country. And it also gives opportunity for kids to get scholarships. And then we have a mental health component that really helps kids who need more help than a little bit in other areas, whether it's in the drugs, the alcohol, anxiety, or mental health that we try to work with and serve. and we raise funds for those kids
Starting point is 01:41:01 to be able to have those opportunities. Unfortunately, for us, Matt, this year with what we've done, we've got over 120 kids who've gotten college scholarships. We've helped over 60 kids get into treatment, and we're having a fun golf event on Monday
Starting point is 01:41:17 at Memorial Park with the Shell Open Course, and we are going to have a lot of celebrities and guests, local rockets and former rockets, and one of your favorite and one of my favorite person. One of our
Starting point is 01:41:31 co-chairman is Kelvin Samson. Is that right? Good for him. We have Calvin and we have some of the rocket coaches are going to be there. Along with George Gerving,
Starting point is 01:41:42 Rudy Tottenjanovich, Penny Hardaway, running Maxwell, Mario Ellie, James Posey, Mike James, DJ Augustine. We have a lot of people
Starting point is 01:41:54 and a lot of corporate sponsors that are helping us put this on in our kids and everybody, I'm really grateful to them. Well, I want to send people to your website, john Lucasfoundation.org is the easiest way to get all information. And if you like to play golf and you want to hang out with some of the basketball elite in this community, Luke knows everybody.
Starting point is 01:42:13 We were traveling all those rocket streets for many years and there wasn't a town that you weren't getting hugged on by everybody. So everybody knows Luke and is going to be a great cause. And look, your career as a player was something and your player is a development coach. But what you've done is a human being. And by the way, a good friend of ours, a mutual friend of ours, is celebrating one year of sobriety this week. So I wanted to let you know about that, just to pass that along to you as well. Well, that is really great to hear.
Starting point is 01:42:41 You know, I'm in my 39th year. You know, Houston saved me when I couldn't save myself. And that year was 1986. We went to the finals. And I wasn't able to go on that ride because of my drug and alcohol addiction. But for 39 years, I've been on this city. and been trying to give back and make up with amends for what it did for me and my family. And you certainly have done that.
Starting point is 01:43:06 And again, the event is coming up on Monday at Memorial Park. John LucasFoundation.org is the website. Now, Luke, for those that don't know, you have been for a long time involved with high school athletes and AAU teams and trying to get kids that go play college basketball and whatnot. Tell me what it's like right now compared to even five years ago, the NIL, the club scene. the AAU, are you having to do much more accounting than you did just about town evaluation
Starting point is 01:43:35 and getting kids to go play college basketball somewhere? Well, you know, now with them being paid to go to school, it really makes it difficult. And now people really believe that they're at that level. And what has happened at is now with, it's like the NBA, it's got free agency because at the end of each college year, you can go get a kid that was on the bench of a college team that didn't play so it's making it much harder for high school kids to get recruited and so they've got
Starting point is 01:44:04 to be better skilled they've got to be trained better and then their parents have got to be educated quicker because a lot of people will sell their soul for tweets and hits and they really don't know the business and how this works so part of what the foundation
Starting point is 01:44:20 is doing is educating parents educating kids and that finding the best fit rather than who pays the most money is more important for that part of it. And only about two or three people will really get paid on teams now because they now have a salary cap kind of restriction with them. And that name, image, and likeness, as you know,
Starting point is 01:44:44 is only for those that are the elite players. Yeah. So let me ask you this. If we didn't have, we know that the super elite kids are benefiting from it, is that what cross-section of the athletes that you're dealing with are getting hurt by this? really a lot of them, especially the high school, because why should I recruit a high school kid when I can get a player that's played a year or two in college may not have played on their bench? Why would I risk my job on an opportunity for growth for someone who hadn't been fully developed, the skill level isn't there?
Starting point is 01:45:20 So the high school kid, which where we are is really affected. So really in the end event, Matt, education is still the most important thing. And if you can get an opportunity to go to school for free, as well as to get an opportunity to make some dollars for that, what a great opportunity. But the key is college and education. And now with the way things are going with AI, the more you can know to be able to work is even better. John Lucas, our guest, John Lucas' big golf tournament coming up on Monday. John Lucas Foundation.org as the website you can go to for all that. Speaking of coaches, and you have had a successful career in that as much as you were as a player,
Starting point is 01:46:03 your son is now the head coach of the University of Miami, 36 years old. Are you going to go try to help him out, or is he wanted you to stay far away from him right now? He wants me to stay as far away from him as I can right now. You know, I went to his press conference, and that's the first time, Matt, I really realized that my son had matured to a man. And somebody said to me before, why would you deprive him of him getting his own experiences? So he asked me to move there.
Starting point is 01:46:34 I refused to do that. I told him that he's on his own. And now you go from giving suggestions to not having to make decisions and being one of the youngest coaches in America. One of the first calls I asked him to make was the Calvin Sampson. to find out because Calvin now from the same area in North Carolina,
Starting point is 01:46:56 and we live right around the corner. So I wanted him to get a bill. I know the NBA game. I know what it takes to get to college, but in a college environment and building the right culture, I don't think we have someone better than Kevin Sampson in the area, and then we have other people that have been served as mentors. And he's been with me my whole 50 years in the NBA.
Starting point is 01:47:19 So I think he's pretty well suited and it's up to him. And he was previously an assistant coach at Duke. What kind of learning experience do you think that was for him and knowing that if he was going to take his own job, he had to go to the right spot? Well, I think going to Duke was an opportunity to see what top-level basketball would be like and the pressure of winning every game. So he got a little bit of that.
Starting point is 01:47:46 And those teams are trying to win. But Duke is everybody's Super Bowl. And so, you know, for them, they had to be on their games, every game. Scala reports had to be on point. Their culture had to be what it needed to be. And I think he's learned those things, and I think he's taken a lot from Rick Bonds. He's taken a lot from Chalker Smart, Rob Lanier, who is also coaches at Rice. And it's been a good resume builder for him as well as John Shaw.
Starting point is 01:48:15 And then he has his dad who oversees everything from a distance. Yeah. So you're, will you text him after games, call him once a week? Have you figured out what you want to do in terms of giving him his space? But yet, you got a lot of knowledge and that ahead of yours as well. No, I'm going to, you know, the one thing I learned, Matt, that there's only one me, there's only one him, and he needs to find who he is within the face of coaching.
Starting point is 01:48:44 He's got to find out what his disciplines are going to be, what his teaching is going to be, what is education of teaching them how to play it's going to be and what is confrontation it's going to be. I've never seen two people, I've never seen a person duplicate themselves to try to be successful. So it needs to take a little bit from everybody
Starting point is 01:49:04 and then grow. And that's part of what I do with our organization. Grow them to learn how to become themselves within an environment. And then I just take the 12 principles and the 12 principles that I live by and apply that to the Lucas Foundation and trying to help kids grow. And if you use those principles,
Starting point is 01:49:25 you'll be pretty successful. Again, the tournament is coming up on Monday, John Lucas Foundation.org for all the information. It is John Lucas's yearly golf tournament raising some tremendous funds for so many youth in our community. Last thing about the NBA, who do you like tonight? And do you think Oklahoma City has a chance to build
Starting point is 01:49:42 a mini-dynasty over the next two and three years? Well, you know, they've done a lot like we did, like we started later than they, about five years later because we were so good with James in that group, but they've got a lot of assets. They can afford to lose a young piece or two and restock through the draft because they have their core now, which is really young. So I think that they're going to, but one thing I notice about the game tonight, I really, if Aliburton is healthy, I expect the game seven and I expect O.K.C. to win it.
Starting point is 01:50:16 I think they've matched their pace. And if you notice, these are the two youngest, and the game has great pace to it, and the two teams with the most face in the league. All right. Last thing, I want you to apologize for all the shots you took at the size of my head over the last seven or eight years. You've got a public form to do that right now. Every time I see you, it just seems to get bigger. Oh, Jesus. That was not what I was looking for, Luke.
Starting point is 01:50:48 I love you. I love you like a step-grandfather. Like a step-great-grandfather, my man. Congratulations on all your success. Great success for you Monday at the golf tournament. I hope to get some people out there. And thank you for spending some time with us today. All right.
Starting point is 01:51:04 Thank you, Matt. And tell everybody, hello. I will. I will. John Lucas is with us here. Seriously. He just always, he would stop practice, Ross. the rockets are trying to get through practices
Starting point is 01:51:17 and I'm saying, good God, you see how big that man's head is? I mean, just trying to humiliate it all the time. That's rude. That's what I'm saying. He had a chance to apologize. It's pretty funny though. John LucasFoundation.org Memorial Park this Monday, Healthy Living Program focused on mental wellness,
Starting point is 01:51:32 substance abuse prevention, and youth basketball, all from John Lucas Foundation.org. Ooh, look at the rain coming into New York. That's going to be a lefty delay, Rossi. Yeah, I think the angels hit another home run too. length of delay flight cancellation perfect win
Starting point is 01:51:49 angels up 2-1 yeah it's a rain delay is happening the tarps coming out oh yeah no it just finished coming out I think now they're warming up again I think it was a very short oh they're rolling it up the tarp yeah I guess oh man you already had a call her just say they really appreciate this interview and he said John Lucas is one of the greatest guys
Starting point is 01:52:06 oh let me tell you something about John Lucas one of the greatest of all time just a good human being and has literally Rossi as we know and talked about for years, save thousands of people's lives. Yes. In athletics and out of athletics. 1245, Sports Talk, 790.
Starting point is 01:52:23 Today's edition, believe or not, Ross, is what? He's still working on it. 1245, Sports Talk 790. Thanks again to John Lucas for joining us. John LucasFoundation.org for his golf tournament coming up on Monday. A very worthwhile cause. And if you're a basketball junkie, he will have numerous celebrities. And of course,
Starting point is 01:52:43 Calvin Samson, he just said we'll be co-chairing the event. Real quick, Shams reporting, or at least not a report, but just more of commenting, says it's a game of chicken right now. The Rockets, heat, and Timberwolves are literally one or two pieces away from getting a deal done. My feeling on this is, and again, this is just purely conjecture from San Antonio's side, I think the sons want the number two pick. And the Spurs are telling them no. Does that feel like that could be a possible scenario? I think it is. I think, as you brought up to ask me last hour,
Starting point is 01:53:16 the Rockets had had two, three, four, five. Maybe they would give up for Duran, and maybe the Spurs don't want to do that. Yes. Stefan Castle, De Aaron Fox, Victor Wembenyama. That's your three big cogs of that San Antonio team. Kevin, Kevin Duran on that team would scare me.
Starting point is 01:53:36 It just would. Again, I will be, not petrified, but I will be like, he's going to make whatever team he goes to, a better title contender than they are at this exact moment. I will firmly stand ground on that. But it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be guaranteed because think about it again, history shows most guys in the latter third of their careers don't make that big of a difference,
Starting point is 01:54:00 especially when there's a huge financial ramification attached to him. And secondly, the last three spots that he's gone to haven't panned out. Two spots at live, Brooklyn and Phoenix. Yeah. It was before Phoenix. Brooklyn was it Golden State? was he golden state before brooklyn it must it worked out there for sure but yeah yeah you know what i'm saying not me know the last two spots and he had town around him in brooklyn with kiree and with james
Starting point is 01:54:27 and it didn't work out he had talent with him in phoenix with bradley beale and with devon booker and it didn't work out so it doesn't guarantee success but it's still i still think it's a stock that you wouldn't mind having in your portfolio he can't be your best player but he can be an absolute devastating weapon he wouldn't be the best player on the rockets he would be the best score. Ooh. Hmm. Who'd be the best player on the Rockets?
Starting point is 01:54:54 I still think it's a Men Thompson. Not Alper and Shingoon? I, first of all. A man doesn't score a... Men Thompson is first team all defense. Mm-hmm. He can play four different positions.
Starting point is 01:55:15 Yes. He can run point one day and be your power four of the next. And he can cave in the front of the rim with his shooting. Well, it's not that. bad. Three point percentage did get was better year to year. What was it? 28%. Well, I mean, it could have gone down. Just saying. I mean, I love
Starting point is 01:55:30 them in Thompson. Hey, but I'll say this. I'm also getting pretty happy about what I'm seeing from the Alperin-Shingon turkey videos that are being put out there too. Oh, what? He's dunking on dudes in Turkey? Hey, Turkish can play. That's fine. Alpy said he would show me around Istanbul if I ever went. Fourteen. Hey, it wouldn't let you
Starting point is 01:55:51 in. That's true. Those felony history. 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3.8 assists. He is just 22. He is going to get better. You don't think, okay, answer my question. We were talking about him getting benched two games into that playoff series for Jabari Smith Jr. I mean, that was happening. I think a man can be.
Starting point is 01:56:10 That was a real discussion. I think a men can be 18, 8 and 8 in play great defense. Eight, eight assists per game? Long term, yeah. When Fred Leads. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, I'm talking about right now.
Starting point is 01:56:24 I'm talking about who next year. Your best player would be Kevin Duran, I think. 18, 8, and 5. Oh, hell. Two run homer Yankees. They lead 3-2. That's a shame. Can Alpi go from 21, 8, and 4 to 25, 10, and 6?
Starting point is 01:56:45 His field goal percentages have gone down three straight years. The only part of Alpi's game that drives me nuts is that little lift leg. A flamingo shot? Finesse shot. You don't like the flamingo? When it goes down, when it goes down, I'm really happy. He shoots it to the moon and it splashes in. That's fun. It is fun.
Starting point is 01:57:06 I think the Rockets told him to work on his low post game in terms of back to the basket would be my guess they told him to do. If he adds that, it's going to be even better because it was an All-Star last year. He was. I will make a boxing analogy in that it feels like right now with Jalen Green and Alperin Shungoon that they can hit limits when they go up against the best of the best. Like a fighter who's a young prospect and he's coming up and he's beating this guy and he's beating gatekeepers.
Starting point is 01:57:36 When it comes to them championship fights, Alpern Shingun was good, but he wasn't efficient scoring. He led the team in points for rebounds, assistant steals. That was great. But he wasn't an efficient score. He was shooting under 50%. Same thing with Jalen Green. Jalen Green was, he got to step up to the championship fight
Starting point is 01:57:53 and he got knocked out. But is that? But whose number? go up in the regular season. Nobody's. Against good playoff opponents. It's not about the numbers going up. It's about them dive bombing.
Starting point is 01:58:03 Yeah, okay, that's fair. Let's go to George and Cyprus at 1254. Hi, George. Is it another home run? Hey, how you doing, guys? Good, George, what's up? Yeah, it's back-to-back homeowners the Yankees. Oh, I just want to piggyback on what Ross said earlier about trust the process.
Starting point is 01:58:22 I mean, the Philadelphia win a championship with the process. we need to go out and get Kevin Durant now. No, they didn't. They had a bunch of injuries as well in that process. Markill's Fultz was a dud. They were pretty good like around 2019, but Joel Embed's been hurt every year. I would say as far as teams who are really great right now,
Starting point is 01:58:48 who didn't make earth-shattering trades, who would you say, well, the Boston Celtics got Porzingis. Mm-hmm. the Thunder did trade for Shegildes Alexander but then they built around him with pieces Jalen Williams was a draft pick Chathonger was a Jaff pick But that wasn't they weren't looking to grab
Starting point is 01:59:08 Shegilder's Alexander Paul George told him I want to go to L.A. That's true. That's true. White Leonard, yeah. Yeah, George, there is, there are 50, if I took 100 rocket fans, I believe they're 50-50 split. Maybe a slight tinge towards getting Durant.
Starting point is 01:59:25 What would you say? If we grabbed 100 rocket fans, fans. I don't know. 55. I'll put a poll on my Twitter at SportsRV. And I'll do the same thing. And what we do is why don't we add our numbers together? Or is that going to skew the numbers? No, I don't know. Just do it on yours, Matt, then. That's fine. No, no. I will retweet yours to get you a few more tweets.
Starting point is 01:59:41 Get you a few more bots. I'll take the bots. I know you will. You don't get rid of bots. I get rid of bots. My account is clean. It's cleansed. It's like silky white and spoo. How much do you factor in trading for Kevin Durant? Not only because he helps you, but he doesn't help the spur of. or the Timberwolves. To grab so nobody else helps.
Starting point is 02:00:02 So nobody else, you don't get hurt by a staying here. Is that a 1% factor, a 0% factor? If I'm the Rockets or any team in contention in the West, I'm not just worried about San Antonio or Minnesota. I'm worried about Denver. I'm worried about Oklahoma City. I mean, that's why the West is so loaded is because if you just get one guy, does that solve all your problems?
Starting point is 02:00:25 No, but it also puts you in that category of, hey, now we've got one more bullet to fire off to help us. try to beat those top-to-level teams. That's why I think you execute the trade. You keep him from the others, and I like the core here. I just don't think this core is getting close to where Oklahoma City is, and that's the dragon you have to slay.
Starting point is 02:00:45 All right, this should be quick. Something called Big C on the Matt Thomas show. Osage, like in Oklahoma? Where are you calling from Big C? Small town, Texas. What can do for you? So I'm always been a dark breast fan. And so we're planning a trip.
Starting point is 02:01:11 I haven't booked, had to book a flight in a while. Give me, you know, I know they went away from there. Note, or what is it, free check bags or whatever. So give me the advice. What do I need to do? Do I just need to shell out the cash and pay for the free Wi-Fi and get on the plane first and whatnot? Give me the pro tips.
Starting point is 02:01:31 All right, where are you going? We're going to Rhode Island. Really? From what city? San Antonio or Houston. Probably Austin. Okay. Austin to Rhode Island, huh?
Starting point is 02:01:42 By the way, that's... Yeah, I love Providence. My daughter's going to be playing college volleyball in the state of Rhode Island in a couple of years. Ooh, Lord. I would probably... Do you have a good income or are you doing trying to do this on a budget? No, we're fine. Okay.
Starting point is 02:02:01 I would probably pay on an airline that had a wider seat, that had gave you more leg room. Dark breast flying to Providence with a change of plane is going to be kind of a pain. Okay. You could also fly nonstop to Boston and then drive the rest of the way into Rhode Island if you want to do that too. Well, we were liking the appeal of a 30-minute drive or whatever it is from Providence. We're going to Newport. That's where my daughter is going to be going to playing college in Newport. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:02:28 in Kingston, yeah, yeah. I'll give you a further report. When are you going? July 4th weekend. Oh, man, that's a great time up there. Yeah, I would, we're going to fly to Boston because my wife's not a big fan of connecting cities.
Starting point is 02:02:45 So, I don't know if you, do you guys travel a lot or not much? About once or twice a year. Okay. My suggestion would be fly to Boston nonstop and drive a little bit more than compared to changing. planes but and plus the Boston Airfare is going to be probably a little bit cheaper but I would go
Starting point is 02:03:01 with economy plus whatever airline you go on yeah I was going to say I guess my question was more or less referring to just buy the base you know cheapest ticket possible oh hell no oh hell no go ahead and shell out the cash shell out the cash by the time you check in bags and whatnot and you're going to pay for it anyway yeah yeah yeah buy the whole thing you need it big seat thanks for the phone call now it said something about my airline I was I was a little worried about that. I miss heard of him. How did you miss it?
Starting point is 02:03:31 Airline. Hairline. Yeah, not airline. Airline. Airline. Come on. Come on. Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Starting point is 02:03:39 All right. I just checked your Twitter account. 78 votes are in in the last eight minutes. That's not a bad number. We can maybe get to about, I don't know, 150, 175. Your question on Twitter was, should the Houston Rockets trade for Kevin Durant? You have got 40% of your voters say yes. 60% of your voters say no.
Starting point is 02:03:55 Hmm. That to me sounds like. you are worried that you'll be giving up too much for a guy who's 37 years old. That you're worried that 37-year-old turns into really old 38-year-old that turns into Mrs. 25 games, doesn't play back-to-backs. I mean, he's still got it, but there have been so many athletes that can't tell you when their days are done. I remember Donovan McNabb.
Starting point is 02:04:32 Remember when his career basically ended on the football field? He couldn't throw the ball anymore. Couldn't run. Couldn't read defenses. And so when it stops, it stops. And I'm not saying that Kevin Durant's going to have that fall because I'm not trying to make him the dime McNabb of football. But point being is that I've watched athletes literally see their careers end in one particular game.
Starting point is 02:04:54 And I think people are a little nervous that he comes here. If he's here an injury or the shot's not falling or he turns a ball or more or the defense isn't there. They're only getting a certain percentage of what they think Kevin Durant can be. And there's others that say he still wakes up scoring 25 points a game. And he still does that. But a question of when does that eventually end? That's what the rockets are mulling over. And the rockets probably in their mind say,
Starting point is 02:05:21 we think he's got this left in the tank. And so if that's the case, then we're willing to give you this in order to make that happen to him for him becoming a Houston rocket. Either that or they are like Jalen and Alpi together one more time. Let's go. Let's see what we can do because we think they can be better than they wore last year and then get over the hump and win some playoff series.
Starting point is 02:05:50 57% from 2, 43% from 3 he shot last year. How many games do you play? 62. He's a freak of nature. He is a freak. And he is in that. category of guys that you think can probably play well in their late 30s if not 40s
Starting point is 02:06:12 because that is something that we're now seeing in today's NBA. He's shooting 57% from 2 and he doesn't really get to the basket like he did it when he was young. Pulls up in the elbows. He pulls up and he makes 57%. By the way, Emei Doca, brand new extension to stay with the Houston Rockets coming down earlier today. Ema Edoca, brand new extension.
Starting point is 02:06:38 Also, we had played the Zach Lowe audio yesterday. saying that the coaching staff is more into Kevin Durant than the upper management. Some correlation or no correlation? I will say no correlation because I think this happens with every trade. What do you mean? I think who is, oh man. I don't know because I don't know how other teams operate. It would be foolish to believe that every time,
Starting point is 02:07:18 a team makes a trade that the coach and the general manager are on the same page every single time. Maybe the Clippers organization, maybe Tyron Loo said, yeah, I want James Harden. Maybe the general manager, the Clippers said, I don't want him. And then Clippers' GM says, all right, Ty Lou, you want James? You make it happen. Or maybe there's somebody that's like a general manager's like, this is a great value trade. Let's go get this guy. Maybe the coach isn't the biggest fan of him.
Starting point is 02:07:47 I would just say knowing the NBA streets that if you can get the coach and GM to grant everything that's wonderful, I just don't think it's possible for that thing. Yeah, I mean, there's obviously enough of a lack of friction that he just signed this extension. Now, of course, the dollar signs and the zero's on that extension probably has something to do with it. Right, right, right, right. Just thinking. EMA's got to feel pretty comfortable.
Starting point is 02:08:15 I mean, got a brand new extension. I think Raffel's going to have an extension too. I mean, from all accounts, they work very well together. It's, you know, with Tillman now involved in the Italy stuff, Patrick, his son is now intimately involved, and it really always has been. So my guess is it's a deep three-man conversation with a lot of things thrown against the wall and see what sticks. I think the rockets, again, you don't hear the rockets pulling out, and enough people would say it. And enough people would whisper to somebody to say the rockets still are interested. So that would mean to me that EMA is like, man, get him here.
Starting point is 02:08:54 here, I'll make this happen. But he may has also got to understand if, and we talked about this on the show yesterday, if Durant gets here, it's championship or bust, right? You don't bring him here just to win 54 games and advance one round of the playoffs. But if he comes here and some coaches like that pressure. I think Yudko loves that pressure. I think EMA lives for that. He wants it, thrives in it.
Starting point is 02:09:17 And honestly, for me, I want that from my coach. I'm not looking for steadily improvement. He is scared. He was like, I got 52, and I got my eyes kicked again by Golden State. You know, remember how much we were talking about how much we hated Golden State. Guess who beat him in the NBA finals? Golden State Warriors. True.
Starting point is 02:09:34 So he's lived with that frustration as well. So he's just tortured as we are. Yeah. We're all the same page. That's exactly right. We hate the Warriors. We hate the Warriors. We hate Raymond Green.
Starting point is 02:09:45 We hate Steve Kerr. We hate Steph Curry. We barely tolerate John the Cominga. Yeah, okay. Moses Moody. I hate him all. Brandon Pajimski, if you will. Yes.
Starting point is 02:09:57 Hate that guy. Terrible hair. Does he have terrible hair? I don't really. Okay. Yeah, that's pretty accurate statement. Yeah, see, he knows. He backs it up.
Starting point is 02:10:06 I don't really. I even hate Gary Payton the second. Because he don't call himself Junior. He's a second. What's wrong with that? Sounds more stately. Gary Payton the second. You know what?
Starting point is 02:10:15 Name your kid something else. John Lucas, you just had us. John Lucas the second. Yeah, but he doesn't call himself that. John Lucas the third was. was his son. Jay. I think Jay, there's Jay and there's John Lucas III. I think he has multiple sons, right?
Starting point is 02:10:30 Yes. You know, I haven't talked about his kids. Yeah, should. Can you help us out with your family tree? Yeah, John Lucas the 3rd and there's Jay Lucas. That's confusing to me. I know. Let's do it.
Starting point is 02:10:47 I mean, I want to see it. I'm telling you it'd be fun. I think 60% of these people saying no on my Twitter. poll. They'd be like, oh my God, the Rockets got Kevin Durant. Yeah, that's funny. You know what this feels like? This feels like baseball guy. Now we're not wanting to give up prospects.
Starting point is 02:11:07 Oh my God. Joey Loperfeito. Now it's not the same. So here's not the same. Real quick. So if they're saying no on your poll, are they saying it's because you're afraid they're giving up too much or are they saying that you're giving up anything, that you are team Jabar, you are team Jalen,
Starting point is 02:11:23 you are team Alpa, you are, whatever is here, they're trusting the process. Yeah, that's the question. Why are they saying no? Are they saying no because it's Kevin Durant at 37? That's part of it. Part of it is the age and the worry that he would get hurt. But you know what, Matt?
Starting point is 02:11:45 Life is short. You can't live the whole time worrying. You got to roll the dice. He's been relatively healthy the last couple of years. I think he wouldn't have been shut down if they weren't trying to tank for draft position. Which, well, I don't even know if they... Actually, they didn't have their own pick, so maybe they weren't doing that. but they just weren't going to make the playoffs anyways.
Starting point is 02:12:05 They weren't trying to tank. They were just, they just were bad. It is a risk. It is for sure. Neither way it's not a surefire situation. 114 in the Matt Thomas Show. 119 on Sports Talk 790. The Astros took care of business, knocked off the A's last night, chance to take three out of four.
Starting point is 02:12:28 Right now the Yankees who trail the Astros by a half game for the best record. Second best record in the American League are leading the Angels 4 to 2. Let's go Angels. Come on now. What's the inning? The fourth. Top of the fourth. There is one out and they've got a runner at first base. Let's go Angels.
Starting point is 02:12:52 They don't even say that in Orange County. No. They don't care. Who are the figures? That was messed up Matt. Am I not telling the truth? Let me give you the five biggest stepbrother, little. Little Brother
Starting point is 02:13:07 Syndrome sports franchises. You put them in order real quick. Okay. Clippers. Mm-hmm. Angels. Hold on, I got to write this down. Clippers, angels.
Starting point is 02:13:18 Because you want me to order. Yeah, put them in order. Clippers. Okay. Angels. Nets. Ooh. White Sox.
Starting point is 02:13:29 Okay. I'd put Anaheim Ducks, but I don't even know if they... You used to be able to say the A's. Yeah, I can't say they... anymore. Who else would be a stepchild to a second team in the same city? Metz? I mean, they've had their own following.
Starting point is 02:13:48 I don't count Mets, Yankees, I don't count Giants Jets. Okay. Well, the Rams and the chargers are stepchildren in their own city. They're not even kids. They've got no father. Oh, wow. Fatherless. Yeah. I mean, the father
Starting point is 02:14:03 abandoned them. Who else would it be? He's got a second family in Chicago. Yeah, Clippers. I already mentioned the Clippers. Okay. I think it's it.
Starting point is 02:14:14 Four, right? I'm trying to think. Who also is double? I feel like we're missing somebody. Giants and Jets are both terrible. But I mean, I'm talking about they both have huge fan bases. Yeah. It's probably just them.
Starting point is 02:14:31 Okay. So White Sox last. I think they have the biggest following of those teams you mentioned. They've won their own championship. Right. Big, been around forever. Southside routinely roots for them. Angels got to be the worst.
Starting point is 02:14:43 Then Clippers, then Nets. I think it's Clippers Angels in there, for sure. Yeah. It used to be the A's too. Although they've drawn 8,000 a game in Sacramento. They're such a little brother. They're moving out of town. They're in Sacramento.
Starting point is 02:14:59 Let me ask you this. Is this ruining Sacramento shot at building a stadium and hosting a major league baseball team at some point in their life? Because nobody cares? No, I don't think so. I don't think it was going to happen for them anyways. Yeah, I think so. I don't know.
Starting point is 02:15:12 If I'm major league baseball, I don't think I expand. Yeah, they're just a rebound side piece. It was never going to be long term anyways. So Sacramento is a side piece. Yes. Hmm. And the rebound.
Starting point is 02:15:24 Got kicked out of the house from your old lady. How they look? Sacramento? Mm-hmm. Six. Not a lot of effort getting there, right? Oh, they welcome you with open arms. No judging.
Starting point is 02:15:38 Mm-hmm. You can call any time. They take what they can get because they got self-esteem problems because they're not L.A. or San Francisco. Do you have to cuddle after? Well, for three years. Got to cuddle in 2028. That's a lot of cuddling.
Starting point is 02:15:59 That's a lot of cuddling. That's almost like leaving a toothbrush there. Yeah. I don't even know what the analogy would be if you're waiting until 2008. Your lady is locked up in prison. So basically, you get to leave a toothbrush and you get to cuddle, and you get to drop by any time you want to. And then you're going to leave when you've already told them here. going to leave. That's why you're not
Starting point is 02:16:23 getting the real love, though. You're not getting the support you need. Not showing up to these games. Yeah. So Sacramento's getting as much out of it as you are. Roger on 790. Good afternoon. Good afternoon,
Starting point is 02:16:41 man. Yeah, it's a cheekless world out there, and I'm so sorry for that man. So, on the answer, on the Rockets, a chance to try to acquire Trevin Grant. I think that would follow all his coaching philosophy as far as defense is concerned. And if a young kid, you know, very easy to get manipulated by that,
Starting point is 02:17:03 wouldn't that kind of like mess up the fragile chemistry, ecosystem with that team? He's a guy to come in, an older cat, and he's there for, you know, he's there for points and to get them up that needed bucket when they need it. But also, who's going to come up for him on defense? He's going to, you know, where are they going to hide him? where they're going to, you know, it's going to be kind of hard that he's going to have to guard a big or maybe try to chase somebody on the wing.
Starting point is 02:17:29 So we don't know how they're going to try to fix that or try to make that work. Just give your thoughts on that. You're going to get your phone line on proofs that, Roger. You got to get your phone line on. You got to get, like, just talking like a muffled or something over it. We've had issues with him before. Yeah, we've got to get that phone.
Starting point is 02:17:49 Yeah, as far as covering for Kevin Durant defensively, you would just hope that that would happen with, I mean, I'm in Thompson, and depending on who stays here, whether it be Dylan Brooks or Jabari Smith Jr., you can still try to play good team defense with Kevin Durant. And the most wonderful thing is, I don't think EMA would let Kevin Durant skate on lack of defense.
Starting point is 02:18:09 No, he wouldn't. But also, energy is finite in a 48-minute game for a 37-year-old. How much energy do you want him expending on that end of the floor? I mean, would they think, game plan B, you're signing in for 60 games? Maybe do you want them to take 22 games off during the season? He's not playing back to backs.
Starting point is 02:18:30 So here's your non-back-to-backs. My guess is Stephen Adams would be in that mix. That's why you got him at, I want to say a bargain, but you got him probably at below retail value. You've been holding Tari East and out of back-to-back. So would you still do that? To be determined, but it would be certainly something to keep an eye on.
Starting point is 02:18:48 Fred Van Vleet? I mean, it feels like he turns an ankle once or twice. Fred doesn't want. want to, but it might be... Put it this way. I think you're going to have to space them out a little bit more. And probably if not... I mean, you can't have all those one guys sit out every single night back to back,
Starting point is 02:19:07 but maybe limit minutes. Put minutes restrictions on some guys. Because look, you're not doing this to beat Charlotte in November. You're doing this to beat Minnesota and Denver and Oklahoma City. You have the eye on the prize, and that is hard to dethrone Oklahoma. City who will be, by the way, regardless of whether they win this thing or not tonight, they're going to be the heavy favorites to win next year, too. Rightfully so.
Starting point is 02:19:30 Yeah. And there's a, the West is ridiculous. That's what I'm saying. If it were in a vacuum and it's only the Houston Rockets, I'm down with trusting the process. When you open it up and look at the other teams and what's going on and these Joneses you have to keep up with in the Western Conference, that's when I tip the scales to you have to do something. You have to make a splash.
Starting point is 02:19:54 If, if you're saying it's championship. or bust. If you're saying, okay, you know what, we'll end up the two, three seed and we'll be out in the second round. It's all cool. It's all gravy. That's actually okay. We're in such a, such a ring championship or bust culture with the NBA right now. I think it does lend to some toxicity, and it slants the way that we view some of the all-time grades. Can you space out four guys not playing 82? It's a lot of work. It's a lot of sports medicine, and that's where does that affect you in your seating? I mean, we know how tight. Now they, they, were able to rest guys the last three games.
Starting point is 02:20:35 But that, I think, is going to be the exception rather than the rule when it comes to the West. You had guys going from like three seed to seven seed on a daily basis down the stretch in the West this year. But do you think we could give that again next year? Absolutely. It does feel like the top eight are going to be right there. Yeah. It ain't going away. We've been wondering when the West is going to get weak for like the last 25 years.
Starting point is 02:20:55 I believe in 2031. It'll start to be down the title will turn of the Eastern Conference. 128 sports talk 790 it is the matt thomas show with ross 713 212 790 719 719 we got lots of nice folks that want to get into the sports of the day including the astros double-digit offensive performance kevin derank conversation never seems to die down until it does and he has eventually moved i still think it's going to happen before the draft although maybe phoenix since and waits i wouldn't want to do that if i was finis especially because I need to figure out what I want to do for my draft. Let's talk to Sal on 790. Sal, good morning or good afternoon.
Starting point is 02:21:38 Hey, hey, good afternoon, Matt. Hi, Ross. Hi. Hey, Matt, I have an honest question. What is your honest opinion about the two soccer tournaments happening right now in the United States? I'm embarrassed for Team USA. Am I wrong? Yeah, I mean.
Starting point is 02:21:58 I am wrong. I am wrong. No, but. Go ahead. Yeah, I'm saying they won 5-0, but what about Mexico, though? They're struggling too. Yeah, I know. I think if they go away from their 3-4-2 to more of a...
Starting point is 02:22:16 That doesn't add up. But how many are 11 on each side? 3-4-3-4-3? 3-4-4-4-4? Yeah, you take the keeper out. You add it up to 10. Okay, if they go more with a 7-1-1... Put a lot of pressure fun.
Starting point is 02:22:32 Still, that's only nine. I got one guy hanging out. Hey, Hey, Ross, what do you think is going to be in the Gold Cup final in Houston? The Gold Cup, it'll be Shiree,
Starting point is 02:22:44 and Shiree and Shiree. Sunshine and Desiree will be in the Gold Cup finals. Oh, I get you. I see what you're saying now. And I like Sunshine for the win. Can you explain to me?
Starting point is 02:22:56 How come Japan and South Korea in the Concaf Gold Cup? No. Yeah, no, I don't know how. It's very confusing. Yeah. But all right, Matt. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 02:23:06 Thank you. I'm sorry. I just don't follow it. U.S. versus Saudi Arabia today at 815, Matt. Tonight? You have a pile of the back for, you know, trying. Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
Starting point is 02:23:17 I'm bluffing. USA. At first when you started saying, formations, oh? So where's the U.S. versus Saudi Arabia watch party? Wherever you want to go. There's soccer bars. What channel is it on there?
Starting point is 02:23:31 night. I don't know. It's in Austin. Oh, it's in Austin? We can probably drive there and get there in time. A lot of tickets available. Austin, not a thriving sports market? I guess not. You think old Sports Radio 1300 is giving it a rundown the night? Probably. Hopefully they're giving away some tickets at least.
Starting point is 02:23:47 Well, we can maybe call our buddy Craig Way. I've seen some ticks. It's on Fox Sports One. I get that channel. We're good. You'll come to the house. We'll watch it together. I am not driving up there. All right. Let's go to Lewis and Sugarland at 137. Lewis, good afternoon.
Starting point is 02:24:06 Matt and Ross, how y'all doing? We're wonderful. I appreciate you asking us. Look, I want to bounce, you know, the only people that I believe when I hear rocket rumors are Matt, Ross, and maybe Shams. Maybe, it's maybe, not even definitively Shams.
Starting point is 02:24:22 That's exactly right. Thank you very much, Lewis. Well, yeah. Shams comes in a very behind third, if at all. Exactly, yes. You know, you're reading all this stuff about Durant, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And you read stuff like how San Antonio doesn't have to give up Castle, doesn't have to give up the number two pick. You know, they're talking about, you know, the 14th pick, blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 02:24:47 And I'm reading names about the Rockets giving some people up that, let me ask you a question. what's your feeling on some of the rumors about Cam Johnson? Are you hearing anything about that at all? Not per se. I mean, I know Cam was talked about at the trade deadline, but I'm not hurting early things since then, no. But do I think Brooklyn's in a potential spot to be a team that could be involving a trade, involving a third team in a mix around?
Starting point is 02:25:21 Yeah, I mean, a matter of fact, there was a report that last week had Phoenix, Minnesota, and Brooklyn put together a three-team trade, and I think Durant put the kibosh on that. Wow. Well, you know, it's been a long time, you know, and you've been with Rockets basketball, it's been a long time since we've had a guy of name, you know, wanting to come here, you know? I don't think we've had that since maybe Charles Barkley, but I just, I can't see. you know, giving up the ranch to get this guy. And I went to UT and I'm a big Durant guy.
Starting point is 02:26:01 But the dude's 37 and I just would hate to see us give up one or two starters and a bench person. So I just thought I'd get y'all's thoughts and keep up the good work. Thank you, Lewis. Thank you, Lewis. Dwight Howard wanted to be here. Yeah, Westbrook wanted to be here. Chris Paul. Chris Paul, yeah, go ahead.
Starting point is 02:26:21 Chris Paul definitely wanted to be here for a year. And then things got surly after that, but that's a different issue for different time. And his hamstring got hurt. And the Rocket should have won the 2018 championship against one of the greatest. You know, I'm going to say, the greatest team of all time, 2018 Warriors. Durant Curry, Clay, Dray, Dremont. They beat the 86 Celtics? Yes.
Starting point is 02:26:47 You just saying that because you want to argue with me? We'll argue. I just said, I'm not going to backtrack five seconds later. I think it'd be easier if you did. 98 Bulls? Ooh. Oh, wait, no, I'm sorry. When do they win 72?
Starting point is 02:27:00 Is that 97? 97, I think. But basically the same team. 6. When did they go 70? Don't worry. Don't worry about it. 90, ooh.
Starting point is 02:27:10 Late 90s Bulls versus that Golden State team. And 96 Bulls were 72 and 10. Pretty good. I think late 90s Bulls beats that Golden State team. That's fine. I'm going with KD. Clay.
Starting point is 02:27:24 It'll go with the three greatest shooters of all time, arguably. Yeah, but I got the number one player in all time, and I got the greatest Batman, Robin of all time. I got a good squad. I got defenders. I've got a great point guard. Different games. I got a better bench.
Starting point is 02:27:37 Do you? Yeah. Who's on the bench? Will Purdue? Yeah. Bill Whittington? Not a Bill Whittington. Bill Cartwright.
Starting point is 02:27:48 What do I got? I have Steve Kerr on the bench for them, jump shooter. Steve Kerr in both places at once? Yeah, probably not. Who's that 96 bench? I'm trying to pull it up for you, Matt. Bill Winnington. I was right about that.
Starting point is 02:28:06 Dickie Simpkins? Didn't play. He played in 60 games. How many of the playoffs? I don't know. I'm being Dickie Simpkins. Give us a Dickie Simpkins breakdown, please. All right, fine.
Starting point is 02:28:19 Let me find the playoff bench. That's what I should have gone to. Uh Yes, Steve Kerr Thank you Randy Brown Ron Harper Oh Ron Harper
Starting point is 02:28:34 Was on Harper starting? No BJ Armstrong was starting wasn't on that team He was on the first three Pete Not the second one Wow I mean I forgot about Tony Kooch Coach
Starting point is 02:28:43 Coach got off the bench No he's starting Okay Rodman Where's Rodman during this time He's starting Okay Jordan Pippen
Starting point is 02:28:52 Coocoach Longley Rodman You got Ron Harper, Steve Kerr, basically, they only went seven deep on the rotation, basically. And Golden State had what, Iguodala, Kavon Looney. Who's the guy that looked like Clay Thompson? Not learning. The lookalike in the stands that got banned from the stadium? No, there was somebody that looked like Clay Thompson that played for the Golden State Warriors. If you said his name, I would be able to recognize it.
Starting point is 02:29:22 Let's see. You had Durant, Green, Curry, Thompson. Oh, Sean Livingston. That's who I was thinking of. Yeah, Iguidala, Kavana, Kavon Looney a little bit. Oh, old man David West was on that squad. He didn't play. Not really. So basically, neither team had a bench. It was their starters. No, I mean, it's the finals. You're on 7, 8 deep max.
Starting point is 02:29:46 All right, let's play, believe it or not. Biscuit, we'll get to you tomorrow, my man. We've got to get to believe it or not here coming up. And the category today is, It's coming up, Ross, in like seven minutes. I got to write a lot. It's Joan Jet and Bad Bitter. Joan Jet.
Starting point is 02:29:59 The show just went by so fast, Matt. It did. Yeah. We started three hours and 45 minutes ago. That's how fast the show moved along. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. All right.
Starting point is 02:30:21 Adam Clanton is wearing Astros gear. He must be doing Astros on deck tonight. Oh, no, that's Dan Matthew. who does the morning show. Oh, well. We can't all live on Adam Clanton's schedule. That's rigorous. He's got to get the Metallica concerts in.
Starting point is 02:30:41 Yeah, he's got to get into the concerts. By the way, my daughter, just real quick before we get speaking of concerts, sent me a text. Dad, can you get the following tickets for the following concerts? She just sent you a straight-up, sent you a lift. Well, she... Go get them.
Starting point is 02:30:56 We talked about it, and she's like... Oh, okay. Can you get me some tickets for this? I'm like, well, I mean, my credit card works, so yes, I can. Uh-huh. She wants to go see Keisha. Kesha? Same difference.
Starting point is 02:31:10 Jason Aldeen. Keith Urban. Oh, my God. Parker McCollum. She likes the country music. And the Lumineers. Oh, the Lumineers? Yeah.
Starting point is 02:31:20 That's funny. Okay. What other woman? 17 years old text dad and says, Can you get me tickets to five different concerts? One with a good father. Remember what I said on Monday? What?
Starting point is 02:31:37 I'm the number one dad. I'll take it back. I'll take it back now. No, I'm the number one dad. That's all right. Number one dad's do that. We got you number one dad. So if I called myself the number one dad, there's a lot of pressure on me.
Starting point is 02:31:47 I've got to come through. Just trying to get them from work. You don't know that? Oh, please. And that's okay. It's a great resource we have up here at IHartMedia. Tickets to concerts. but usually for like concerts that nobody wants to go to.
Starting point is 02:32:03 Sometimes. Yeah, you got to ask. But yeah, they're not going to have extra ones lying. We're going to have great tickets for, believe it or not, right now, aren't we? We are? Five minutes left to go on the show. What should we do? Should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show.
Starting point is 02:32:19 We simply call it B, believe it or not, and here's how it works. You'll call 713212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-790. Starting point is 02:33:40 Joan Jett is younger than Pat Benatar, believe it or not? I've said again, I'm sorry. Joan Jett is younger than Pat Benatar. Believe it or not? Believe it. Yeah. Joan is 66. Pat is 72.
Starting point is 02:33:55 Statement number two for the win. For years, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett had a silent rivalry with Benet. Anatar feeling she was superior as a Juilliard trained vocalist. Believe it or not? Not. That is also correct. Congratulations. Nice and done.
