Starting point is 00:00:00 So much larger than life. Yeah. Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show. 12 o'clock in H-town. What's happening in lunchtimers? Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. I'm Matt. Ross is still recovering.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Brendan Riley back in the producer's chair this afternoon. and will be with me along the way up until 3 o'clock this afternoon. Hope you guys had a happy and safe and relaxing 4th of July. Probably a lot different as I watch more television on July 4th, watching everybody else's fireworks and perhaps I've ever done in my entire life, but thus the situation. There are some fireworks going on in baseball, but not the good kind. We'll tell you about that coming up in just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:01:02 We are expected to be joined at some point in the show today by Jake Kaplan from the Athletic. and he's going to move with this every once in a while when big sports developments happen and one of them is today where the Astros had to call off their workout today at MinuteMade Park. They're calling it summer camp. Okay, whatever. That's because of a corporate tie-in. I mean, let's not kid around the reason why they're doing that. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:01:30 Majorly baseball needs to figure out ways to draw revenue. Get a corporate sponsor to do this spring training 2.0. So be it. So they have been working out the last handful of days, and I'm sure you've seen some of the video on the local TV stations. And they are in a position where they're social distancing and they're using all different parts of the ballpark, and they're doing this and they're doing that,
Starting point is 00:01:54 being very, very cautious, as you would expect them to do, as you would expect most Major League Baseball teams to do. Well, they've been getting these tests, and these results have not come back as quickly as, I don't know if the organization wants, the players want, a combination of both, but today they suspended the Astros did their workouts at MinuteMade Park, and here comes a statement from James Click. The safety of our players and staff remains our top priority at the Astros. The team is still awaiting results from COVID-19 tests taken on Friday. Due to the delay in receiving these results, coupled with the contagious nature of the virus, we felt it was a,
Starting point is 00:02:37 prudent to cancel today's workouts at Minutemate Park and the University of Houston. Players and staff continue to participate fully in the screening and testing protocols while we await these results. Despite these delays over the holiday weekend, we're optimistic that this process will be ironed out and will be back on the field and ready to compete for a championship soon. That's a statement again from general manager James Click earlier today. So I've been really mixed about this And this is where I'd like to get you guys involved in two

Starting point is 00:03:40 in terms of the delay in the season, and delay in workouts and the sometimes cancellation or postponement of individual workouts, was this just going to be something that was going to be expected by all the different Major League Baseball teams? Or is this a bigger concern that the people in mainly baseball are letting on. Because it's not just the Astros.
Starting point is 00:04:09 It's the Washington Nationals. It's a lot of other teams in the NBA. The test results are not coming back fast enough. And they, being the professional sports teams, are not willing to take that chance in infiltrating their facilities with potential multiple COVID victims. So where are y'all on this?
Starting point is 00:04:32 When you hear the Astros have to cancel today. The Nationals have to cancel. The Oakland days have yet to have a full squad workout. And by the way, the MLB schedule gets it released today. So you talk about an Oakland team that's really behind the eight ball. It's them because they have yet to even really have one full workout because of their protocols. Add on top of that, you have players like Nick Marcakechus, David Price, Ryan Zimmerman, Ian Desmond, Felix Hernandez, and I'm mentioning others, but those are the ones that you guys basically would recognize, have said, we're not going to compete. I wouldn't be completely stunned if Mike Trout says thanks, but no thanks.
Starting point is 00:05:21 He is very much hemorrhaging his enthusiasm for playing this year. So I would say today for me is a bad day for baseball. Does it mean they can't get this worked out as James Click put it in his release? It doesn't mean they can't get this fixing and they can't streamline this and that there are going to be some normal positive test. But not having results when these camps reopened, promising fast results is not a good sign for Major League Baseball. So I'm not asking to walk me off the ledge because, man, I need some sports in the worst way.
Starting point is 00:06:06 I'm sure y'all do too. But I just don't like the vibe I'm getting from Major League Baseball today and really the last handful of days about how there are some things going on in some camps moving along. And then there's other things in other camps that aren't moving along. The Yankees are going to have an inter-squad scrimmage here not too long from now. And again, they're doing their things. and the A's have yet to have a single workout. And again, I'm not in the, I don't really particularly care what the Yankees do or the A's to have to conduct their business, but there has got to be something going on that's got
Starting point is 00:06:43 to be a little more uniform, so we have at least some competitive baseball. And if I'm an Oakland A's fan, as few as they are out there, I'd be wiggin out a little bit that my team is yet to really have a full squad workout and get themselves really actively ready for the start of the season. and if the Astros postponed today's workout, how long does it take? Did the results show up at 3 o'clock this afternoon to the back on the field tomorrow? At this point, the Astros don't have any indication of what they're going to do. But it is, I think, a little bit of a dangerous sign that we're having problems with the distribution
Starting point is 00:07:22 and the results of these tests when you know that things are going to really get amped up when these teams start playing and they start traveling and they start going to different hotels in different cities and different stadiums. So I'd love to be a fly in the wall in Rob Manfred's office. I'd love to be able to figure out if he is wigging out,
Starting point is 00:07:48 if he is this is par for the course, or my guess is, oh no, what the hell are we going to do? Does that don't mean faith in the guy? Do you? do you think this is a guy that's going to be able to handle any more tumultuous times in Major League Baseball?
Starting point is 00:08:06 So far, he's 0 for 1. He completely butchered negotiations between the owners and the players. And now we're going to have teams canceling workouts because they can't get their test results fast enough. I think the response to this is massive. Can they start getting results fast enough? That was my point, Brendan,
Starting point is 00:08:27 is if they can't get them during summer camp, how am I do it before a start of a series if they're waiting for results? I mean, we know there are faster tests out there. So that's what can the MLB answer? Yeah. That's the number one thing. But I'm telling you, and again,
Starting point is 00:08:51 not that social media is the end all, but if I was to peruse my timeline today, when finding out about the Astros canceling their workout today, the Nationals canceling theirs, the A's have been unable to have full squad work, workouts, testing delays with the Los Angeles Angels. It sounds like a convoluted mess right now. And my hope is that there's just, this is all stuff that Major League Baseball thought of
Starting point is 00:09:19 and that they have planned to be in place to make sure if this became a problem, that they would be able to quickly resolve it. But I can just tell you, and I'm sure y'all are the same thing. if you're on social media, you're seeing the same sorts of things that I'm seeing, that I think there is some genuine alarms being sounded about what's going on. Because if it happens in the middle of summer camp, that's one thing. You cancel practice. You move on.
Starting point is 00:09:49 What if this happens, where test are delayed two or three days, and you have a team that's supposed to go on a long road trip, or a road trip, period. How are those players going to feel comfortable about to take jumping on an airplane when they may be on an airplane with players that have tested positive for COVID. Hate to be a Debbie down to this early. Excuse me, I'm a little over-climped. But that's really the headline of the day is that the Astros said,
Starting point is 00:10:16 thanks but no thanks. We're not going to work out today. So I'd like to ask you guys, if you're out there listening, and for that I'd appreciate it. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-5-790. what is your confidence level that Major League Baseball's got this down? That there were going to be some positive test.
Starting point is 00:10:39 There were going to be some delays in the resumular results, but that's just what they expected. And that because you have so many tests being distributed and so many taken and so many players and so many personnel that there were going to be some bumps along the road. And maybe that's what this is. That's what I'm hoping it is. because I think the more and more of these camps getting shut down, it's going to be a very, very, very hard argument to say, yeah,
Starting point is 00:11:11 we didn't get this down during summer camp, but man, when the season starts, we'll have this down perfectly. And there'll be zero complaints about anybody trying to figure out whether or not it's going to be safe for them to jump on a plane, go to a ballpark, and play a baseball game. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-21-5-790. Starting point is 00:13:52 Carlos Correa has some advice for his girl, his wife, Daniela, about where she shouldn't, should and go. here's his advice about making sure that she doesn't put herself in harm's way. I feel like if you go home, there's going to be a really low chance that you can contract COVID. You know, I mean, especially, you know, nobody in your household is going out either. So, you know, when I talk to my wife, she knows, you know, no getting your nails done, not getting your hair done right now. Somebody's two months. So we're going to be home.
Starting point is 00:14:24 We're going to stay here and we're going to focus on the baseball season. And once everything is done, then you can go, you get your nose. nail tone and do everything else. All right, women, you hear that? No nails, no hair for two months. All of us that are guys that have wives that like to spend a lot of money on such thing, we believe Carlos Carras is our favorite player of all the time. Are we going to see players with late in the postseason with wild hair?
Starting point is 00:14:57 You know, not in the NBA because they're going to have a barber there, but in baseball? I don't know. What are they going to do for all those hours? hours of the day. You know, I don't know. That's a good question. I mean, if the aster's, I mean, Yuli already has wild hair. I'm trying to think anybody else that would be really, I think we'll just see longer hair, but I don't think it's going to be like wild. Well, I mean, the regular season's probably not going to be a big issue, only being a couple months. Yeah. But if you start getting deep into the postseason, and especially if you have longer hair to begin with, I mean, my guess is most these guys are still going to go get their haircuts and something that scares you a little bit for the restart of the season.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Yeah, I mean, Josh Reddick's at the long flowing locks. I mean, what's another inch to him, right? I don't know, we'll see. I had really hadn't thought of it. Facial hair might be something very interesting. Guys like, screw it, am I taking a shout? I'm not going to shave. COVID beards on the field.
Starting point is 00:15:53 That's true. That's true. All right, 713-212-5-790. My simple question to you guys this hour, and it's really going to be throughout the course of the program. is Major League Baseball Are they screwing up? Are the protocols not properly in place? Do they not think this through?
Starting point is 00:16:14 Or is the virus just that damn powerful that no matter what you try to prevent, no matter what you try to do, that the virus is always going to win? Delayed test results, I want to know, is it a blemish or is it something that Major League Baseball had not prepared for and could be in serious trouble if they don't get the speed of these things going
Starting point is 00:16:36 like ASAP. 713-212-5-790. Let's go to my buddy David in Las Vegas at 1220. Hi, David. Hey, how are you? I'm okay. Listen, by way of full disclosure, before talking about the baseball, I actually did have this COVID thing.
Starting point is 00:16:54 I was sick for four days a couple weeks ago. It took me nine days to get my test results. I said it would take three to five. This system is so backed up. I mean, that's just a reality. I was well fully recovered from the thing by the time I got my positive test result back, and I have been fine for the last two weeks now. But just to file that report.
Starting point is 00:17:17 And also, I didn't get a chance to listen to you much last week, so I haven't been hearing how Ross is doing or what's going on. I know he quarantined himself because he thought he was at risk, but after a while, maybe he's had a positive result, too. He did have a positive result, yes. And I hope he's doing well. I hope he gets through it as easily as I did because it really wasn't that bad after a few days.
Starting point is 00:17:35 So I'm wishing RV the best. On the baseball, all I keep thinking of, I just keep going back to Europe because I'm watching all this soccer, which you know I have a little more of a tolerance for an interest in betting than you do. But, you know, I just keep seeing every, I know their numbers aren't as high over there
Starting point is 00:17:55 and maybe soccer's got certain amenities with smaller rosters and baseball and less contact and football, and it's an outdoor game unlike the hockey and the basketball. But it's kind of the same enterprise, and every country in Europe is able to put that game on the field and deal with the fact that they're positive tests from time to time. And it's part of life, and they've been able to do it. It gets to me as an American that this is something that we're, you know, can't do. So I don't know whether baseball is the head of the game
Starting point is 00:18:30 or the head of the plan or whether or not it was. But it just is infuriating me to think that we can't find a way to play through this when the rest of the world can put on their sports. Well, I, you know, I guess the question would be, immediately would be
Starting point is 00:18:45 what's our positivity rate as compared to other countries at this point? Oh, that's fine. And I don't have to answer that. So I don't know what the percentages are. I don't think of it as, well, England's playing, why can't we? I don't think of it that way because I think these are two different countries,
Starting point is 00:19:05 it's a different world. I just think that these sports organizations have had such a long time to process how to get through this that did in their what could go wrong kind of category, did delayed results into their mind? because if you're going to be testing as often as you are and saying that you're going to be making sure that everybody's going to have their tests multiple times and to make sure that everybody that's participating is healthy, you've got to be able to have, you know, expedient ways to get results.
Starting point is 00:19:38 And, you know, I don't know if there's a hiccup in the system or they just can't do it fast enough, whatever, but you're going to have to probably really ratchet down the number of workouts these sports teams are going to have the United States if they can't get these results faster to the people. people that need them. Yeah, you know, and I have another question about that testing. I tell you, of my experience, probably the worst part of the whole thing was that damn test.
Starting point is 00:20:02 I think it goes up your nose into your brain. That's awful. I would do anything to have to go through that twice, including the disease itself. That's awful. Only lasts a few seconds, but it's dreadful. I don't, is that the kind of test they're running on all these guys? Well, the columnicue, the former Astro, there's a spit test. Starting point is 00:20:23 Good to hear your voice. I'm glad you're feeling better. The editor's there's swabs. There's the spit test that Conno McHugh did. I think there's a variety of different things they're doing. And I'm glad that they're able to find out different ways because my guess is if I had to do the nose thing three to four times a week, I would be afraid to take the test because it'd be so painful. But yeah, I don't know where the hiccup is. but here's the thing
Starting point is 00:20:54 we've got a major league baseball season starting in what 18 days so what's the right course of doing this separating workouts by two to three days so that everybody when they go to the fields know exactly what their results are that won't have the guys ready for the start of the season
Starting point is 00:21:16 it won't I mean they just started up just a handful of days ago so I don't know what the right answer on this is. And I'm sure the commissioner is going to have to address it somehow today when the schedules get released and that'll be done at 5 o'clock our time, the 60 game schedule. But man, if you are 18 days away from the start of the season and you're having to shut down major league camps, that's not a good sign. Again, unless they anticipated doing this every once in a while. And they can't do it again, I don't think. Because if you start to shut down
Starting point is 00:21:57 shutting down teams from multiple teams and multiple days, there's going to be a lot of hesitancy, not from us as fans, but from the players saying, wait a minute, why are we going on here and risking our bodies in order for you guys to have this test for us, and then you make us take these tests,
Starting point is 00:22:14 and we don't have the results. Meanwhile, we could potentially be exposing each other to the COVID out there. Do you think this is as problematic as if they were shutting down for mass outbreaks, though? I don't know. That's a good question. To me, this feels a little more solvable. Like, it's unacceptable that they don't have quicker response tests now, but they can fix that.
Starting point is 00:22:36 If you start having mass outbreaks, the only way to fix it is to shut down. Yeah. And see, I don't think baseball can handle a shutdown. I think if baseball tries a shutdown, they're just going to just close a season and say, hey, we tried. Right? Oh, yeah. No, there's no way. There's no room for the NBA to shut down and try later.
Starting point is 00:22:55 There's no room for Major League Baseball. to shut down and try later. You know who's watching this, Brendan, in all seriousness? It's college and pro football. Oh, I think the NFL has chosen not to make any decisions because they get to watch somebody else try to go through this. If these leagues both succeed, the NFL is going to go full steam ahead. Yeah, by the way, the NFL, all the head coaches are on a conference call
Starting point is 00:23:19 this afternoon to talk about the latest run under protocols. 32 coaches and one general manager. Also, in about 20 minutes from now, we're going to discuss what's wrong with Peter King. He had a really odd, odd tweet over the weekend, and we'll let you run through a couple of those things. Other things going on, Darryl Morey is speaking
Starting point is 00:26:55 with the media, and we will play some of that for you coming up at about 120 this afternoon. He's still talking with them, and by the time we cut the audio up and whatnot, we'll give it to you guys a little bit later, so we have that going on. So the rockets are supposed to be later. this week for Orlando. I have a buddy of mine who is one of the official photographers of the NBA and he got hired by the league to go to Orlando to shoot video, shoot still photos.
Starting point is 00:27:20 And he's already in quarantine down there. And we may catch up with him later this week just to kind of see what's going on. I don't know if you guys saw ESPN sports center with one of their female reporters was already down there. And she is held up in her, she being held up in her room and she has to be in there for like five or six straight days. I mean, she cannot leave. She can go outside to exercise and walk around for, I think, 30 minutes a day, something like that,
Starting point is 00:27:47 once a day. But she was talking about she's in this room and that they deliver everything to her. That includes food. And the first thing I thought of is when somebody was delivering food is that, you know, what if you don't like something? Like if you are, if for, for, lunch, you get like a turkey sandwich and chips or something, you don't like turkey. You like ham better. Well, they don't have time to go through everybody's individual options of what they want for food. So what she showed us on this video is they just give you one of everything. So what's basically happening is they get fed three times a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Starting point is 00:28:35 and they're just in there in these closed plastic wrap thing very tightly wrapped as you would expect and basically they're just getting pounds and pounds and pounds and pounds of food she mentioned one day for breakfast she had there was a cold cereal she could have there was oatmeal that she was given there was a breakfast sandwich that was given there was fruit there was crackers and so basically these these people that have already made their way to orlando and i'm sure the players won't be far behind when they get there are just going to be fed ad nauseum now they're not going to obviously want to eat it all and if they are they're probably going to gain 15 or 20 pounds but could you imagine being hold up in a hotel room for multiple days only being able to leave one time per day
Starting point is 00:29:22 to go out and get some fresh air and then basically just eating anything in front of you because that's what I typically do when I'm bored I don't go anywhere when I've eaten a lot I was going to say I'm such a bored eater. I think that would be the most dangerous thing for my weight possible. And I imagine, like, at the end of the day, even if you're not a fan of what they're making, they're probably pretty high quality. Oh, I'm sure. I mean, and again, if you don't like at least one or two things, then you're just too picky an eater, right? I mean, they're going to give you some options that you're going to go, okay, maybe I'm not in the mood for a cheeseburger today, but there's a slice of cheese pizza in there.
Starting point is 00:30:03 I'll have that. You know what I mean? I can't imagine them being so finicky. So I have another friend of mine who is going to be one of the official scorers at the game, and he's supposed to be a little bit of his whole to him when he gets down in there to kind of get what his life is like. But I wonder how big their rooms are because here's the thing. These NBA players are all going to be in these probably very big rooms. Like, you know, what is an average hotel room, but 400 square feet, give or take, maybe a little less?
Starting point is 00:30:31 those guys are not stuck in a 400 square foot room. They're all probably getting villas, suites. Now, granted, it's not going to be fun to be stuck inside of an apartment. It would be about 1,000 square feet, whatever, give or take. But that's what you have to do in order if you want to finish out this basketball season. So I want to find out what my man, my official scorer, who's not an NBA player, but does still have a huge responsibility ahead of him, what his conditions are like, how often they can go out and how stir crazy is going to get before they start practicing.
Starting point is 00:31:04 They're going to have three scrimmages, and then they're going to eventually get started on the 30th and 31st, where the rockets will start their season on the 31st. So it's going to be, you know, I would have loved to have gone selfishly, but because of my rocket radio responsibilities, I wouldn't have able to. We're going to be broadcasting the rocket games from here in Houston. None of us from the broadcast team are going to Orlando. They're just trying to keep the number of people here at a minimum. them. So we're going to have television screens and we'll broadcast it like we were watching
Starting point is 00:31:32 with you guys on television. Have you ever done anything like that before? Yeah. Did some, my first year with the Rockets, the Rockets went to China to play a couple of games and I did not go and so I broadcast the games on a television. It's not an early as fun. It isn't. You like to be there. You like to hear the roar of the crowd. You like to be closer to the action and you know, you can still do it. It's not preferred. But yeah, it can be done. I did very limited play-by-play in my college days, and I just feel like I would have a hard time bringing the energy. Yeah, I'd feel the same.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because once you take the headphones off, you don't hear any crowd noise, because you're in this room, basically. So, yeah, that's why it's for me having crowd noise will be a big part of it, because it'll at least get the feel that I'm there. But for broadcasting, it'll be very, very odd, especially if the rockets go deep in the playoffs and you want to sit there and celebrate and talk to the guys after the game and whatnot.
Starting point is 00:32:23 You're not able to do any of that stuff. In fact, no one's going to talk to anybody, basically. Everything's going to be on Zoom meetings. There will be no post-game interviews, I mean, at least in the local side of things. Now, maybe ESPN will have a boom mic that's like six or seven feet away from them. But, yeah, it's going to be really, really, really different. And the thing I think about, and that's because I'm always thinking months ahead on sometimes, is that if this works out okay
Starting point is 00:32:52 and we don't have any further resolution in terms of any sort of vaccination for the virus, will the NBA want to do something very similar with maybe multiple bubbles next year? At least start the season. I don't think the players will go for it. I think they're going to go bonkers as it is being tied up in Orlando,
Starting point is 00:33:15 but at least there's something to really play for like an NBA championship. could you imagine telling 30 NBA teams in two or three different locations, hey, we're going to do this bubble thing again, and you could be there for a week, two months, the entire season. First of all, it would bankrupt the league. I mean, having to take care of 30 teams and all that, hotels and whatnot. Oh, what a mess.
Starting point is 00:33:42 From what I understand, Orlando is going to cost the league $150 million. by the time they staff it, by the time they get the rooms, but by the time they do everything, the arenas and everything, it's $150 million. Just shows you how crazy the money is in the NBA right now that they're going to put that kind of investment into this just to finish off eight regular season games and a postseason run. I think they recognize the brand value too.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Of getting back on TV. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the television contracts will take care of that. It'll just be really, really, really weird to see where this goes and is this even an option for the start of the next season? Or my hope would be that you resume a normal NBA season in December of this year with no fans and then as the vaccination start to come in and you can start in the
Starting point is 00:34:34 and things tend to calm down and the hotspots go away that you'll be able to not have to worry about, you know, having arenas with no fans. Maybe you'll have a limited. numbers and maybe by say 2022. That was the very first thing I thought of when this started. I said, you know what? If they're having problems now, we're not going to get full crowds until January of 2020 and I'm kind of kind of stick with that, I think.
Starting point is 00:34:57 I don't think we'll see any sort of full crowds for any sporting event for a very, very long period of time, at least until there is rampant opportunity for everyone to get vaccinated. All right, 1242 on the Matt Thomas show. 713, 21, 5, 790, 713,

Starting point is 00:37:01 Hey. All right. So that's Joey Chestnut on July the 4th. I got to be honest with you. I don't particularly like the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. It's competitive eating is not my jam, especially after I was supposed to go,
Starting point is 00:37:14 one year and Kent Hoffman screwed that up, but that's a different issue for a different time. So I didn't realize that some would have such piss and vinegar when it comes to the competitive eating. Somebody called Jerry Sullivan tweets out July 5th. The media could do the culture of favor and ignore the sickening spectacle of competitive eating. It's revolting. Peter King of NBC Sports retweeted it and said, quote, tweet and said, and what he said. I didn't realize that there was such anger for it. So a guy, one of Peter's followers,
Starting point is 00:37:54 retweets him and says, you know, you do have a remote and do not have to watch it. Peter King then responds with the following. Never have, never will, not the point. The fact is ESPN celebrates the birthday of our country
Starting point is 00:38:11 by airing a gluttonous, vomitous, and grotesque event. Eating is not a sport. Competitive eating. is a sin? I have a pretty good feel, Brendan. I think you do, too. What is a sin and what is not a sin?
Starting point is 00:38:31 Is competitive eating a sin? I'm going to go ahead and say a hard no. I think Peter's lost his mind. Okay, it's not my cup of tea. It's not something I would ever do. But am I going to go run to my social media account and talk about, what it's in it's it's a sin it's grotesque it's vomitous and he shubs ESPN there by the way
Starting point is 00:39:02 I'm wondering Brendan Rodley if NBC would have done this event wouldn't he have said such a thing the answer is oh hell no it would it would not have I I'm trying to find it right now I don't know who it was but somebody commented it's much better to watch guys give CTE to each other on other holidays well I again that's that's just trying to be you know I want a one-up you guy well I just think the point is I don't have a problem with either one, obviously. Right. But I'm saying, like, I think it's fair to say if you have a problem with competitive eating,
Starting point is 00:39:33 like, is competitive eating worse than football? I think that's a fair point. You think it's worse than football? No, I'm saying, if you have a problem with competitive eating, if you have a problem with that, you should also have a problem with football. That's right. Personally, I think you should have a problem with neither. Yeah, my belief is to each his own.
Starting point is 00:39:54 You know, not have different strokes for different folks. But I was just like, because he got, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, He got sideways with Clay Travis over Trump. Peter King, please know your role as a grumpy newspaper guy. Just, that's what I'm telling you, Brendan, these writers that become television people, they just become these massive a-holes. And again, Peter, if you don't like it, that's fine. But the fact that you would go after a network that you don't work for is very, very,
Starting point is 00:40:31 convenient and the fact that you go that you that you go have something you don't cover is very convenient and the fact is that you know that people would say yeah oh so you think guys giving each other concussions is okay but competitive eating isn't again i'm not one of those people that would would try to equate the two but it just seemed like it was an absolute stretch that he would take time on his twitter account and make it sound like it was there were people committing murder I mean, if you watch the highlights of Joey Chestnut, it looks painful. And I don't know why anyone would do that to themselves.
Starting point is 00:41:06 But look, man, if that's what you want to do, if that's what you want to excel at, if that's what you want to be remembered for, like, I'm not going to stop you. And so, you know, whether or not he's talking about, if he's worried about gluttony would be a sin, correct? Yeah. Gluttony is a sin. But please, did anybody go turn on ESPN on July 4th and go, man these are these people are committing sin this is horrible what's the they're doing a stupid competition which i don't think it's healthy for your body but you know what there's a lot of people to do
Starting point is 00:41:45 a lot of things that aren't healthy for the body they do it anyway cigarette smoking for instance alcohol abuse i don't know throwing your body around on a football field doesn't seem like any of these things are particularly healthy it's just really odd to me that he again all i would say is this. Peter King would not have the stones to say that if it was on NBC. I'm kind of curious why he waited until this year. This has been a thing for a very long time. Why did he now decide that this is a problem? Because I think
Starting point is 00:42:13 he's just becoming older and crankier. I mean, he misses his football. He misses the fact that there's no training camps to go to where he can't stay in Starwood hotels and get his points and write about all the things that he does when he goes on eats on somebody else's dime. I mean, he's just cranky. He's upset. This is one of the most competitive things we've seen on ESPN lately?
Starting point is 00:42:35 Well, he's probably upset because it did so well ratings-wise, I'm assuming. I missed the Peter King who was just chalk full of football information, and I talked to this person, and I did this, and I, and I, and he's what he told me. I miss that guy. I miss Sports Illustrated Peter King. Does that make any sense? Oh, yeah. I never thought of Peter King as the guy that you're describing.
Starting point is 00:42:58 In this instance, I think he absolutely is, but I've never associated it with him as the old grumpy, almost I'm better than you feel that this tweet had? Yeah, that's the thing. And that's what's happening, unfortunately, to a lot of national baseball and football writers. They just, they're so self-righteous. It's just, it's gross.
Starting point is 00:43:19 So you know what? You don't like it. Go on. But to make an indictment against ESPN, who, by the way, is thirsting for programming just like your network is, I just thought it was it was just of all the people to chime in, whether it be about gluttony or whether it be about its gross,
Starting point is 00:43:38 whether about competitive, I mean, again, just because that's the thing we've learned in 2020. And unfortunately, I've got to make sure my children learn this. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean, you've got to be there the first one to comment on it. Well, I think Twitter kind of, if you want to do well on Twitter as far as numbers, I think having that personality does well for you too.
Starting point is 00:43:59 And I'd almost suggest that's why you're seeing these. national writers go that way because it gets a lot of clicks on Twitter. Oh, sure. It directs people to their stuff. Yeah. But see, I don't like, so am I making mistakes? I don't think competitive eating is very cool. I think it's gross.
Starting point is 00:44:15 But I haven't run and said, oh, my goodness, this is the worst thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Turn it off right now. Don't feed in this paranoia. I think you can do it and do fun, too. You don't have to be spiteful. Like, you can make jokes. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:44:29 Yeah. Lighthearted. So now that we're going to do that Well let's end this segment lighthearted If there was an eating contest Would you what would be your food of choice So I've had this discussion Way too many times the last couple days
Starting point is 00:44:42 Because I'm a food guy I think I'd go tacos Because I think I could knock back tacos pretty quickly Now are you talking like fajita tacos Or like ground beef Hmm I didn't I never really thought that through Fihas are better

Starting point is 00:45:10 I said, I think yesterday to somebody, I could do 15 tacos in 10 minutes, but that was probably if you're talking Taco Bell, I think I could do 30 in 10 minutes, but I think I'd hate myself. Oh, you'd be so sick, too. We wouldn't want that. Yeah, I wouldn't be working the rest of the day. I'd be busy. You get 10, right. You know, I always go back and forth about my, is my favorite singular food. is the steak lupae from lupi tortilla that's my favorite uh fajita meat period i think it's my favorite thing i found since i moved here and so i think to myself because because you know they had the 10 ounce and the 14 ounce i bought the 14 ounce for my birthday last month and i thought you know what
Starting point is 00:45:48 i'm going to crush this and i couldn't finish it and i'm thinking of myself well if i can't even finish a little 14 ounce uh steak loopie from loopie tortilla how the hell am i going to go to an to eating contest and try to eat a lot of it in a short period of time. Well, like popcorn. You measure it by weight, maybe? How about, you know what? How about like jamming lays sour cream and onion potato chips in your throat? Oh, I could easily.
Starting point is 00:46:16 Just taking a big stack and just crunching them like that? I could kill a bag in a few minutes. Oh, now I'm getting ill just thinking about that. Let's change the topic. Starting point is 00:47:34 because of the lack of testing, not lack of testing, but the lack of results. Jake Kaplan from the Athletic on Twitter, Jake M. Kaplan is there. Jake, did you go to the ballpark today and find out there? Take us through your day as you were following the baseball team. No, I found out from home. It was been a weird few days in MLB land. There were some complaints around the game yesterday. you saw online, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:48:08 And, you know, they're supposed to get tested every two days. And so Friday was the last test, and then they weren't tested. Some teams were tested yesterday. The Astros were not tested yesterday. Other teams in the same boat as the Astros. And then all of a sudden it turned into, well, we don't have the last result. We haven't, you know, we're getting our next test before we've gotten our last results in. So, like, it's not safe to practice, right?
Starting point is 00:48:33 So, yeah, so work came down, when was that that I tweeted at 830 or so? Yeah. That today's workout was canceled. So is this a blip on the radar, or are you pausing for some serious concern right now? I mean, I don't think I – I think I've always had serious concern about this whole plan. It's definitely an ominous start to the whole process that MLB and the union have set out. And personally, I think they should be testing every day. And so they're already at sort of a disadvantage by doing every other day.
Starting point is 00:49:15 And then when you don't have the results between tests, that's not exactly safe, you know, to prevent an outbreak or spread at all. So, yeah, I think it remains seen whether it's just a one-off or something. something more serious that is going to continue, but MLB doesn't have long to make sure they fix it. Do you know where these tests are going? I mean, are they staying in Houston? They go somewhere else?
Starting point is 00:49:45 So where do you think the delay took place? Yeah, I don't know where exactly the delay took place. It could have been with the mail service because of the holiday. That's certainly possible. But the tests from every team are going to a lab in Salt Lake City, Utah. Yeah. That logistically seems like a lot of time to be wasted there, Jake. I mean, every one of these cities from Major League Baseball has teams.
Starting point is 00:50:15 You would assume they've got terrific medical practices. Clearly Houston does, but I'm assuming every city does. Why there? Do you have any idea why? I don't. I don't know why they haven't done, you know, instead of one centralized testing lab that they can't do several around the country. But even the rhyme of reasons of who's having delays and who isn't doesn't even seem to be necessarily based on proximity to Utah because the A's has been the team that's seemingly lost the most time.
Starting point is 00:50:52 They haven't even had a position player workout yet because their intake testing for their position players hasn't come through yet. So, you know, you would think San Francisco to Salt Lake City would be a pretty easy flight to get those tests over. but for some reason they've had the most trouble. So in your mind, what is Rob Manfred doing with results today that the nationals canceled, the Astros have, other teams have, the A's don't have a full work yet yet. What's going through his mind right now? I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:51:24 But certainly MLB has to fix the process. And, you know, it is, you know, like they did start on a holiday weekend, which is probably not ideal for all of it. And I think it would be easy to chalk it up to just that, but I think it remains to be seen as to whether it was just that or some flaw in the process. Because if you take a test on Friday, you should know the results, you know, before Monday at the least. So it's an ongoing thing that we're all monitoring and, you know, they took more tests
Starting point is 00:52:01 or are in the process of taking their next batch of test today in Houston. So we'll see how long it takes for them to get those results. Jake M. Kaplan on the Athletic Astros beat with us on Sports Talk 790. The argument I made to begin the show today was if they can't get this done during summer camp and the proper testing and the results and making sure by it's clear, how they're going to send teams from one end of the country to the other. And I'm talking about Toronto down to Florida, Houston to Seattle. I mean, this is just not set up to be a particularly good sign for about,
Starting point is 00:52:35 what is about to come up, and that's going to be some more intense testing and guys jumping on planes and guys playing in different ballparks and guys staying in hotels. Yeah, it's almost like they should have played in the bubble somewhere, right? Right. I mean, that's...
Starting point is 00:52:50 How frequently are they testing in the NBA? It's every day, right? Yeah, every other day, every other day, and they'll take tests before they leave. A lot of the teams are leaving in the next three days, and then they'll quarantine for anywhere between five and seven days, and then they'll be taking more tests, and there. The thing I can't get, I mean, you don't have the answer to is, I don't understand the Salt Lake City portion of this thing. If you want rapid test and you want results right away and you are willing to pay that kind of money to get that, it should be done in Houston, Texas, should be done in a laboratory, should be done at the medical center or anywhere else. So these guys can leave the ballpark that day knowing what exactly their health status is.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Yeah, I agree. If that's viable, I agree. Yeah, it's definitely an ominous beginning. You know, it's what they started Friday. We're speaking on Monday. This would have been their fourth workout day, and they're already losing time that they don't really have already because it's such a short spring training 2.0 here, opening days in less than three weeks.
Starting point is 00:53:53 So, yeah, it's not great times in Major League Baseball right now. Your eyes did see a few workouts over the weekend. Anything noticeable except, for the fact that Yorda and Joe Smith were not there? Personally, I was not at Minime Park. I have chosen to work remotely. Good. More comfortable that way for safety reasons.
Starting point is 00:54:17 So I haven't seen the batting practice rounds that have been open in the media, but I'm not sure after having watched years of batting practice, I would have been able to tell much from watching batting practice anyway. Oh, I understand. Yeah, for sure. So, yeah, it's tough to really get a read if anything's changed among specific players, but certainly, like, the monitoring who's there and who's not there is probably the most valuable part of reporters who are going to the park and watching.
Starting point is 00:54:50 So we ought to presume that, you shouldn't presume, but it feels like that when Dusty Baker kind of clams up and says, I can't really tell you why these guys aren't here, that it's probably COVID-related of some sort? Yeah, I don't know. We are, at our company, the athletic, we have, we're operating under a policy of like unless the team or the player announces it, we're not presuming anything. You know, we're not, you know, so that they need to announce that they have it for us to report it. And that hasn't happened. You know, you have seen that with other teams.
Starting point is 00:55:23 The Rangers, for example, today just announced that Joey Gallo has had it had COVID. So, you know, the Astros haven't announced any specific name. but yeah it's a weird it's a weird dance for these GMs and managers to kind of explain why guys aren't there without you know you know while adhering to like the privacy part of it and it's a non-baseball related injuries so like managers can't say one way or the other yeah Nick Marcakis David Price Zimmerman Desmond among those King Felix not going to partake any of those surprises to you, any of them, do you think they're all health-related? Do you think there's some guys worried about next year's and contracts? Is there anything you can take from that kind of list of guys I just mentioned? Well, I think, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is interesting and noteworthy
Starting point is 00:56:18 and telling that I think all of these guys are pretty accomplished and have made a lot of money in their careers, right? I think that's interesting. You know, I think there's still a few weeks where we're going to see more opt-outs. And you might see opt-outs during the season if they have a season. There's been a lot of players who seem like they're iffy on it and aren't certain, whether it's out of fear for their safety, their family safety, or just don't feel it's right. I mean, you've seen really every possible reason for it.
Starting point is 00:56:55 So, you know, I lost track of how many players it's up to now. It seems like 9 or 10 at this point, but I would be surprised if there weren't more in the coming weeks. I think we're all kind of waiting, Jake, on what a certain outfielder for Los Angeles Angels is thinking about. Because Mike Trout has not hidden the fact that he is very, very apprehensive about returning. And I think a guy like that, if he says things but no things could really, really shake the baseball world up a little bit. Yeah, I agree with you. I think if he opted out, you would see even more follow. And, you know, I think the development of today and yesterday with the testing issues
Starting point is 00:57:37 have to give some guys some pause too. So definitely an ongoing story that we're all following here. Well, I appreciate you jumping in on a short notice, my friend. Darrell Mori spoke with the media earlier today, getting his guys ready to go to Orlando. We'll have all the action for you right here on 790. First and foremost, Darrell asked a question that I pretty much know he can't answer, but it's in there anyway. has anyone tested positive for the COVID from the Rockets? I hate to sort of dodge, but not on purpose.
Starting point is 01:00:28 The league office has sent out a memo last night, maybe because I think the media is understandably very interested in this. They sent out a memo that they had had a discussion with the MBPA, and we're not at liberty to really talk about the details of all that. But I would say, look, every team is obviously every person at the world. world is really dealing with these challenges. The NBA has put a good plan together. We're following every part of that protocol and we're going to be on the plane to Orlando Thursday after all the final days of testing and following those protocols and we're excited to get back on.
Starting point is 01:01:12 Can you say if it's everyone on the plane or less than everyone? I mean, I can't say now because like the protocols go all the way until we get on the plane. And so exactly our traveling party won't be determined until then. Darrell also asked about Mike Dan, Tony, being a high-risk traveler. Yeah, I mean, we have concerns of every player and staff number. So is the NBA. And, you know, they went through a very comprehensive review of every person who is, you know, on the potential traveling party.
Starting point is 01:01:48 And, you know, I think people know from the CDC and other places what, what are the higher-risk factors, you know, different types of other conditions that increase your risk. Those have all been examined. The league office has done, they reviewed every person who was in the traveling party. They then came back and said, here are a set of people that need it even further review. in that review, to my understanding is ongoing. And one reason I couldn't answer Jonathan's question is we haven't gotten the final results of the further review among the select folks that they wanted to do more investigation. All right. Darrell also asked about if there's any anxiety about going to Florida with still the numbers rising in that state.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Well, I think I believe in the plan that's been put together by the NBA. I think everyone, you know, again, this has affected everyone in the world. I think everyone has anxiety, obviously, with, you know, the horrible, you know, results that have happened in the United States and around the world. So my personal anxiety, you know, I have in my family, my wife has one of those conditions. that puts out a higher risk so that obviously makes things more challenging for us. I think everyone's going through it. I think everyone has to assess the risk they're deciding to take on versus the upside of what we all have to do, which is also continued to live our lives.
Starting point is 01:03:39 So, you know, it's a tough balance everyone seems to be going through, including myself and everyone on this call. But I think we all are trying to make the smartest choice we can make. And, you know, my choice obviously is go to Orlando and everyone else has had everyone going. Starting point is 01:04:09 Bha'amute to add, and that's probably that's taking the spot of Tavo Sopalotia here, as Darrell on potentially adding loot to the roster. All else equal, you know, because we had a major change in the components of the team, we do think a second training camp benefits us because when you're integrating a starter onto a very good team, you know, getting more time to drill and rep things, especially I would say on the defensive end, although offense as well, will allow us to integrate Covington in. And I do think that slightly favors us.
Starting point is 01:04:50 But I think at the end of the day, you know, everyone just lines up their players and we're all going to be going at it. Well, that's about the second training camp. We'll let you hear what to. All right, here we go. Here is Daryl about maybe adding a new forward or an old forward of the team. Luke Mbamute. I'm trying to think what rules.
Starting point is 01:05:12 Let me say. So we don't only have the normal NBA rules. We have like, I think we're on memo 87, I think it's something around there. I think I can say, you know, we're obviously Luke was a huge part of our team in the past. You know, he's someone we're interested in signing. Yeah, he's a free agent so I can talk about him.
Starting point is 01:05:38 And I think there's a good chance that that's a direction we'll go in. All right. Daryl's got to be very careful because, let's face it, Daryl's had some time before where he has actually settled some things and wasn't supposed to say. So I think he's now very overly cautious about what he can and cannot say about that. But if Luke can help from a defensive standpoint, absolutely. It's just, you know, he has had
Starting point is 01:06:08 in his time as a rocket in his last couple of years with the Clippers, he was always hurt. So hopefully he is, the time away from the game has kept his defensive wits about him and he can come help this team out and hit an occasional shop and more importantly, what he can provide on the defensive end will be a lot of fun because when he was healthy and was helping the team, he definitely did so as a defensive player.
Starting point is 01:06:28 All right, 1-24 on Sports Talk 790. If you would like to chime in anything that Darrell had to say about the concerns, the players. They're all leaving Thursday for Orlando, and they will be gone hopefully until October. I guess the question would be, what would be the one thing you'd have to take with you if you were gone for that period of time?
Starting point is 01:06:51 I wonder if they're allowed like three suitcases, two suitcases, five. I mean, they're not washing their own clothes, and not like they're going to a laundromat. Equip managers will handle that. But what would be the one thing you would have to take with you. Can I tell you, I think there's going to be players who do this too, even though they have
Starting point is 01:07:10 video games there, your personal system. I think it's smart, yeah. Just because, like, I know there's a lot of gamers in the NBA. And, like, you've got to have your own information. You've got to have the ability to go online and play with any friends you may have outside of the NBA. And you might not get that just from whatever the NBA provides. Are you a gamer?
Starting point is 01:07:30 Oh, yeah, I'm a gamer. So do you talk to people that you don't normally know on games? Um, so I've met people through games. I wouldn't say I normally do that, but I have friends who I've made through gaming. Weren't you the one that was telling us that somebody met a girl through gaming? Yeah, my cousin. My cousin has been dating a girl who lived states away, and they've lived together now, I think, for over a year. They met on World of Warcraft.
Starting point is 01:07:59 Man. So he lived in what state, and what state did she live? She moved from Florida to Michigan to live with it. him. Have they ever met before then? I don't know. I can check with him. I don't... That's actually if it's fascinating. I don't think so. Because the reason why I bring up the stranger thing, have you ever run into somebody like semi-famous where you're trying to play video games or is that just...
Starting point is 01:08:23 That's so minutia. There's so many millions of people to play. I have not, but I do have friends. Like, I play the 2K video game, NBA 2K, where like everyone controls their own player and you play five on five. The team that I play, play with has played against Darius Slay, NFL cornerback. Yeah? But I personally have not run into that yet. Could you imagine if you were playing some video game and you were blank talking some dude? That dude was on the, he's like, that's me.
Starting point is 01:08:51 The player? Yeah. I think you lose automatically, right? Well, I think you go into hiding first and foremost. You turn your mic off? Mm-hmm. Oh, man, I was just kidding. That wasn't me.
Starting point is 01:09:03 I wasn't saying that was somebody else. That was my little brother on the, on the. on the system. Or you double down and tell them this is, this is my turf. That might be you playing in the video game. You might be good at real football. I'm better at this game. Oh, no. You would, you would really say something like that? I don't know if it was the right game I might. That's true. That's like the ultimate keyboard warrior move, right? Well, look, man, I'm not, like, you've seen me, Matt. I'm not an athlete. I know where I'm good. I'm a lot better at video games. Yeah. It's better to talk up a good game than it is actually good. Oh, yeah. I'm right there
Starting point is 01:09:35 with you. I'm right there with you. But could you imagine like, oh, God, you need to catch that pass. And it's, you know, God, I hate playing this retro Steve Smith character. He doesn't, he drops everything and it's, and it's Steve Smith 89 on the other time you're playing against. That'd be pretty hysterical. I'm telling you in particular, the NBA, like, has a gamer culture. Like, there are a lot of guys who game in the NBA. You would probably know that, but oh yeah, do they play themselves or do they play other teams?
Starting point is 01:10:05 I don't even know if it's necessarily playing a ton of sports video games for all of them. I think you probably get a mix for the guys who are playing sports video games, though. Yeah, we don't have video games on the team playing, so I don't know if they do it there. And I don't know if... You know what the one thing I did notice about players? They love to shop. I mean, it's got the money. You know, I've been travel with them for four years, and what's the one thing that you notice?
Starting point is 01:10:31 And I said, first of all, they kind of keep it themselves because we're in so many different cities in such a short period of time. They like to play cards, just like anybody else does, and they like to shop. I mean, especially if we're in a really good shopping city, New York, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, Sacramento, not so much. But, you know, you get my drift on this. They're not going to be able to do that really in the Disney bubble, are they? They'll be able to shop at the Disney gift store. That's about it, right? That's tough.
Starting point is 01:10:59 You know, that's why, Brandon, you know what they got to do? They just got to go there and win the damn thing and not worry about anything else. A battle of who can be the least distracted? did. Who can go without sex? Who can go without video games? Who can go without shopping? We'll win the NBA championship. Because if anybody strays, it's going to be one of those reasons, right?
Starting point is 01:11:23 Because the food is going to be good, right? When they're there, they're not worried about having a good food. They'll love plenty. It's what they're just going to be bored. And if you take a chance and you have to be separated by your team because of an unexcused absence or something, you could really screw your team. And that's why they've got to be anybody. I'm talking about the Rockets, any team.
Starting point is 01:11:45 You just got to suck it up and say, you know what? This is a one-time thing. No one ever anticipated this is ever happening again. Starting point is 01:12:07 And by the way, I think this will be, there's no asterisk on this one at all because of the fact that it's, first of all, it's a full season, give or take. Secondly, it is playing in the most unnormal character type atmosphere with no feet, no crowd. You're in a bubble. You're basically trying to focus on basketball and that's it. You've got no other worries to get into. You've got to worry about making sure you stay on track and you eat. eat right and you get your sleep and you don't try to stray away. I mean, it's going to be, not only should you win an NBA championship because you're the best

I think the head coach Ron Rivera is involved in it. I think there are other ownership groups. The corporate dollars are going away. FedEx being one of them.
Starting point is 01:14:12 I think Nike being another one. So our friends in Vegas have put together a list of potential options and what you would, if any of these sound good to you. I don't really have much to say about the Reds. I mean, the Redskins name is offensive, and it has been forever. And I'm not, by no means, a leader of the PC crowd. But that one is just, it should have been changed a long, long time ago. So it's finally going to happen.
Starting point is 01:14:43 I don't think it's a question of consideration. I think when you have gone through the trials and tribulations the last couple days by the organization and the loss of corporate sponsorship, but they're definitely going to be making moves. So here are the names that are being thought of that Vegas has supposed odds on. Now, again, this is just a website that's looking to get some interest from you about, you know, what kind of team name it should be. Some of these make tremendous sense. Starting point is 01:15:19 There's a few that are funny. The Washington Trump's, 5001. Brandon, is a logo on the Trumps? Is that a picture of him, or is that a hashtag fake news on the helmet? Ooh, I just assumed it was a picture of him. You definitely work in fake news somewhere. Maybe across the jersey? And we get like a fight song with like Donald Trump quotes.
Starting point is 01:15:50 I think that would be the way to go. Oh, yeah, you would just have him sing it. It would just be a bunch of sound bites of him like we play on our show. Starting point is 01:19:34 if you have fallen on your sword for all these years not to change the name and you're finally going to do it it better be for the right reason and it better be a name that I think that everybody at University likes. And I would do a lot of due diligence on it, and I would check to make sure there's absolutely nothing of a negative connotation that's associated with that. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians, if they change their name, again, some really bizarre ones
Starting point is 01:20:00 have made their way on this one. The Great Lakes at 40 to 1, the Fellers, which is in relation to Bob Feller, the one of their great pitchers, 33 to 1. The Union's 25 to 1, the Rockers 21, 20 to 1. The Crue. Crows, 20 to 1, the Cuyahoga is 15 to 1, the Rocks 10 to 1, the Blue Sox 9 to 1. The Wild Things are 8 to 1. The Dobie, 7 to 1, the Buckeyes, 6 to 1, the Guardians 5 to 1, the Naps, 4 to 1. And the name, it was the Spiders, the Negro League team. Is that what they were called?
Starting point is 01:20:36 I don't recognize it. The spiders have a connotation to Cleveland somehow. They're the leaders at 3 to 1. I think the Braves have said they're not going to change theirs. I don't believe the Warriors are going to change theirs in Golden State. I know a lot of different college teams that have had Braves and Warriors have changed,
Starting point is 01:22:14 but at this point, those two organizations have said, we're going to keep things as is. The only one to me, in all... honestly, the one that really rubbed me the wrong way up for all these years was the Redskins. Everything else I felt like was more of a tribute than anything else. The Redskins just from the logo to how they were being the mascot and all the, it's just, it was a very, very bad look and it's surprising that it took until 2020 in order for them to finally make that change.

Starting point is 01:25:03 I know he was hesitant. I don't think we've heard him say anything. All right. So, Brandon, you sent me this story from something called theactivetimes.com. I have never heard of this website before my entire life. It was trending on Twitter. Well, it doesn't mean it's good. But you sent it to me anyway, and it's worthy of repeating.
Starting point is 01:25:22 they have a story out today. Most popular major league baseball team in every state. So let's put things in context. The southeastern states are going to love the Braves. The northeastern states, like New England states, are going to love the Red Sox. The teams in the California, Nevada, Utah may love the Dodgers. And then you had your each individual state that has more than one team.
Starting point is 01:25:53 So because Brandon, sent this to me. I wanted to see what state team was the favorite among people in Texas. So I'm going through Oregon and Rhode Island and South Carolina and Tennessee and then I get to Texas. This Gibroni website says, most popular Major League Baseball team in Texas is the Texas Rangers. says Texas has it all in sailing affordable warm weather destinations, iconic Texas recipes, and not one but two MLB teams to choose from, while the Texas Rangers came out on top in 2019. Now, they're basing it on number of ticket sales.
Starting point is 01:26:43 To determine the favorite baseball team in every state, the active times reached out to ticket marketplace vivid seats, which broke down 2019 ticket orders by state and included Washington, D.C. The data is based on regular season games only, so grab your glove and cap it's time to throw the first pitch. Brendan, you're a smart guy. Why is this a flawed way to determine who has the most baseball fans in a particular state? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is difference in stadium size.
Starting point is 01:27:17 Not what I was thinking, but continue on. I mean, I guess you'd also just say lots of fans don't go to game. as they watch on TV. Well, my thought was, when did Vivid Seats decide to tell me who's popular in a state and who's not? There's lots of flaws in this. That's the biggest one to me. Because if you are strictly going off of ticket sales, number of tickets, years, the Astros were 9th in Major League Baseball with 2.857 million fans
Starting point is 01:27:49 for an average of 35,276. The Texas Rangers were 18th, with 2.133 million people attended their games for an average of 26,333. So essentially, the Astros had almost 10,000 more fans per game. But apparently, they didn't use Vivid seats. So that's why this story is 100% crap. Basically, if you don't use vivid seats, you don't count according to this story that was sent to me today.
Starting point is 01:28:34 Yeah, this article should really read Houston Astros fans don't like vivid seats. Houston Astro fans buy season tickets. Houston Astro fans use less third-party ticket distributor than, say, Ranger fan. It's really... it's an awful way to say, because, again, anybody that wouldn't be able to figure that out, would say, wait a minute, why do the Rangers have more fans than the Astros do?
Starting point is 01:29:02 Why are their ticket sales better? It took you one second to figure out the Astros were drawn almost 10,000 more per game. That took you one. And two, that vivid seats, when did they decide they were the end-all when it comes to how people spend money
Starting point is 01:29:15 for tickets in the state of Texas. Now, I do think it could be interesting to look at the secondary market prices of average tickets. Not that they did that, But I think that could be an interesting study. Yeah. Yeah, who pays the most? That's a better story.
Starting point is 01:29:33 Because here's the thing. If you live in Utah and you want to go to a Dodgers game, which you're going to make a trip to California, then you are going to use a vivid seat. But unless you just can't get tickets because you don't go down to the ballpark, you're going to figure out a way to go to Minutemade Park on your way to work or after work or maybe buy them a day a game, and you're going to go.
Starting point is 01:29:55 So it was just yet again another misleading story to grab headlines. We have a massive Adam Schefter tweet here. Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached a 10-year agreement ties him to Kansas City through 2031. Okay. They don't have numbers on the deal yet, but 10-year deal for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Well, when we can get the number? I would imagine it's going to come out today, and I'll keep an eye on it, but 10 years? 10 years.
Starting point is 01:30:40 Now, granted, that's not all guaranteed, but there's going to be a lot of it that's going to be. 10 years. Let's discuss that coming back, and I guess the easy question for you would be, should the Texans be willing to invest 10 years in their franchise quarterback? You have to imagine that by the end of this deal, it's probably going to be a bit of a steel. I mean, we don't know the numbers yet, but that's my guess. Ten years, one, an XY, XYZ million dollars. And here's the thing. The thing that's going to be crazy is going to be the guaranteed money.
Starting point is 01:32:43 because you can throw out any sort of crazy number you want to it's will he be there for all 10 of those years to make that money you know it's so funny uh pat mahomes a couple of years ago brent we were on radio row and mahomes chose lee steinberg as his attorney his agent and lee in the 80s and 90s was the cremdala cremwin it came to football quarterback agents i mean he was he had all the stars I think he had Steve Young, he had Trachman, I think, just to name a couple. And he had kind of fallen off the map a little bit.
Starting point is 01:33:22 He had had some health concerns. He was always still very popular, but he was a little odd. We had him on the show probably five or six, seven years ago, and he would just talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk. Didn't say much. I was just talking about general culture around being. around sports and the legends and, you know, a little bit of the cross-references to Jerry McGuire and whatnot.
Starting point is 01:33:49 But I thought to myself, this is a guy that is past his prime as a sports agent, kind of living off of the money that he made in yesteryear, but, you know, still carries huge clout. And then a couple of years later, he shows up with Pat Mahomes and he's like, this is my guy. To get 10-year contract. How about this, Brendan?
Starting point is 01:34:16 How about 10 years? $475 million and the guarantee is $300 million. I think you're in the right ballpark. I'm kind of thinking $450 million has to be the minimum. The guaranteed numbers, I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than that.
Starting point is 01:34:34 I wouldn't be surprised because I'm telling you, man, every time the quarterback market gets reset, people beat it. So six, seven, eight years from now, the average numbers probably won't look as impressive. so the guarantee is going to have to be there. Yeah, I'm terrible by guessing about contracts. It's just not one of the things I like to do.
Starting point is 01:34:56 I mean, some guys can hit it around on the head on the way off. But he's... Maybe that... You know, not I just say that it feels like that's even a little low. Could you pay him 50? Oh, my gosh. If you add the numbers, would it be worth $500 million, knowing that in the last four or five years,
Starting point is 01:35:15 he's probably making more of the $53, $54, $55 million category. I don't think it gets to 500. I think it's between 450 and 500. That would be my range. And the guarantee is that what I said? 300 is that about right to you? I would say 350 to 400 of it is guaranteed. Almost, I would say, very significant portion.
Starting point is 01:35:37 Wow. Good luck any other free agents signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Because think about this. And maybe they're going to, they'll defer most of the money towards the back. but if NFL games do not have fans in the stands, you're looking at a large amount of revenue gone, which is going to ultimately affect the salary cap, which is ultimately going to affect how you disperse money among your team.
Starting point is 01:36:05 I bet you, when this thing, you know what kind of reminds me up is the Auburn Pooleholds contract with the Angels, where every year he's getting more and more and more money. How old is he? Is he 23? I was going to say he's 26. He'll be 36. I'm sorry. He is not 26, but it is a 10-year extension. So at the end of the extension, he will be 36 years old.
Starting point is 01:36:28 I got news for you. He's not finishing that contract. And my guess is he knows that and Kansas City knows that. So the big crux this is going to be is how much this money is he going to get in the heart of the deal the next seven years, where he is going to be, you know, as long as he stays the kind of player that he gets today, the starting quarterback can put together kind of numbers. You know who's also waiting for these results? Deshawn Watson.
Starting point is 01:37:01 He is dying to find out. You know who's not excited about finding out? Bill O'Brien. Because if there's anything we've learned about this time, ladies and gentlemen, is that Bill O'Brien is going to outpay with a fair market value as a people. He way overpaid for Laramie Tunsell. He inherited a bad David John.
Starting point is 01:37:25 contract. He overpaid for Randall Cobb. I don't think he overpaid for Brandon Cooks, because if Brandon Cooks is still got some of the money, the Rams are on the hook for that. But the organization has had a history. I mean, he overpaid for Kymi Fairbair.
Starting point is 01:37:40 We know that to be the accuracy on that one. Oh, man. Deshaun Watson is just he is foaming at the mouth right now. Give me that number. Give me that number. What's that number? because guess what he'll do? He'll say, I'll take, you know what,
Starting point is 01:37:59 I'm the franchise player for the Texans. Now, granted, I haven't taken the Texans to a division to a championship game or a Super Bowl just yet, but I'm going to. And when they do, and when I do, I want to be paid just like Pat Mahomes because I think I'm every bit of this quarterback as Pat Mahomes is.
Starting point is 01:38:17 But hell, if you're Deshaun Watson, you'll take 90% of whatever this deal is, and you've got to be thinking that's what Easterbino Reiner think in the back of their mind, well, you know, we kind of know what the market value is. And we know that our guy is really, really good. He's really, really close. We'll get 85% of what Pat Mahomes is getting and we'll have won. The question is going to be, how outrageous is this money, is this guaranteed money going to be?
Starting point is 01:38:50 That's the number one thing on this. You can float out any amount of money for any quarterback you want to, any position player you want to. It comes down to what you are. absolutely going to be guaranteed in giving that player for the length of the contract. I'm sure it's a convoluted mess. I'm sure there's got to be a lot of it is back towards the back of the contract.
Starting point is 01:39:17 But that doesn't take care of the guaranteed dollars, because that's what Pat wants. If Pat knows that 36 years old he's not going to be the Kansas City quarterback, he can live with that. It's how much of this contract he's going to have guaranteed. He's really good. He's the best player in the game. I like him over Lamar Jackson. I meant that's not an indicting Lamar. I like him over Pat, over Deshaun. But those two cats, they have another season like they've had in the years past,
Starting point is 01:39:42 and they're going to want the exact same money, especially in Deshawn's case because he's set to get a contract at the end of this season. I wonder if even Bill O'Brien would have thought that Pat Mahomes would have received a contract that would have gone a full decade. In the NFL? That's crazy. We only see crazy contracts like that in Major League Baseball. We don't even see that in the NBA.
Starting point is 01:40:13 We don't see LeBron James signing nine-year deals worth $464 million. These guys love these three, four, five-year deals. They love the two years of the opt-outs. Because they like to be wined and dined. Not Pat Mahomes. God, that's crazy money. But if you're the best at the game, and I wonder if it was, hey, we need some help towards the back.
Starting point is 01:40:40 We're about to hit a tough time in the world of sports business. Okay, let's just keep adding ears to the contract. Let's just keep adding, adding and adding and adding. And then all of a sudden one day they woke up and went, okay, we're done. Where are we? Oh, 10 years. 10 years! And he's been healthy for most of his career, clearly, a little bit of a setback last year.
Starting point is 01:41:05 But, man, he is. I mean, it's impossible for me to save money well worth. It just is. But if you were to name a quarterback in the NFL that would be wanting to get a 10-year deal, it's probably him. And I wonder how Dak Prescott feels about this. Dax's loving this. Deshaun is loving this.
Starting point is 01:41:28 Probably Lamar Jackson, one more good year for him and he's going to be loving this. Meanwhile, the NFL can't cry poor, especially with one team that is going to spend probably, what, 25% of their salary cap on one football player? It's a huge investment. Excuse me. He says the following. The safety of our players and staff remain one of the top priorities of the Astros. The team is still awaiting results of COVID-19 tests taken on Friday. Due to the delay in receiving these results, coupled with the contagious nature of the virus, we felt it was prudent to cancel today's workouts at Minutemate Park and the University of Houston.
Starting point is 01:44:29 Players and staff continue to participate fully in the screening and testing protocols while we await these results. Despite these delays over the holiday weekend, we're optimistic that this process will be ironed out and will be back on the field and ready to compete for a championship soon. Okay, everybody, on a Scandal 1 to 10, one being no big deal, testing is going to take time, results are taking time, and 10, we ain't playing baseball this year. Where are you right now? I think I meant like a 6. I will go with a 5, but I'm very, very close to bumping it up. I mean, I'm not panicked, but I definitely think that there's reason for concern.
Starting point is 01:45:22 turn. Again, the thing that Janeway, Jay Cap went on from the athletic earlier today, you made to tell me the sophisticated system these Major League Baseball teams are doing when they're testing and they have to send the results off to Utah? That in itself sounds like a logistical nightmare. Why there? Why can't they in each individual city do their testing and get their results there? Let me tell you, people are spending 175, 200 and 200,
Starting point is 01:45:57 $225 for these rapid results test. Are they the same kind of test that the Astros are taking that majorly baseball players are taking? And people are finding out those results in an hour, hour and a half, in some cases, 15 minutes. Now, granted, those do have a false negative on some of those. I just, I don't understand it. I understand why they went to, why they're having to send everything to Utah. I'm wondering if the rapid ones are only the super uncomfortable ones. Yeah, that I don't know.
Starting point is 01:46:29 But it just feels weird. I mean, now granted, you take the test, you ship them on the plane, you take them to the airport or you have FedEx or whoever else picks them up, and they're in the Utah the next day. So it probably takes another day or so. So you're talking about a two-day turnaround, right? I just, it doesn't make sense to me why you couldn't get the results done here. Instead of a two-day turnaround, you have the results, say, buy that after. If you take the test in the morning and get the results in the afternoon.
Starting point is 01:46:59 This to me could potentially really throw off Major League Baseball if you have more and more teams unable to take part in their summer camp workouts because the Major League Baseball schedule is going to be released in two hours and 40 minutes and it is going to be what the 24th is the first day so we're talking about 18 days and we have one of the baseball teams. Granted, we don't care about them, but it is what it is. One baseball team that has not a full, has not had a full squad workout with each other
Starting point is 01:47:35 because of their testing practices, talking about the Oakland days. Man, we need baseball bad, but I don't know if, I think we're, if this continues where we have more and more teams canceling workouts, you're going to see a large number of very, very recognizable players canceling their seasons and saying, you know what, at the end of the day, this just isn't worth it. And that's where we are at 220 with their schedule being released coming up at 5 o'clock hour time. And we're going to be excited about the schedule release. We're going to be excited to see if the Astros play the Dodgers here in Houston or they go to Los Angeles.
Starting point is 01:48:21 It's not going to matter. I think of fans in the stands. But the Astros have won in both places, honestly. You know, how often will the Astros and Rangers play? How will the road trips be? Will the Astros go west? Maybe say just three times, play three 10-game road trips? because what you do want to do is ultimately you want to have them off of a plane as often as possible.
Starting point is 01:48:45 And, you know, if you have to go, because they're going to be doing more traveling than anybody else. Now, there is Eastern Seaboard travel where the Yankees would have to play the Rays in New Orleans. I get that. But everybody with the exception of, you know, the Rangers is about an 800-mile flight away. I think the next closest city to the Astros is the Colorado. Rockies. Then Arizona, then you have the California teams, and then you have Seattle way up there by themselves.
Starting point is 01:49:15 So I'm thinking just to cut down on air travel, to cut down on trips, that you keep those guys, once you send them on the road and heading west, you keep them on the road for, say, at least seven, if not ten days. Starting point is 01:50:14 The one sport you have not heard from in a long time, and it's funny if you do any sort of research, if you let to go on the web and see what various people think about college football, there is no unanimous option. There is no unanimous choice. there is no definitive decision about how to progress the season. You have a lot of people saying you should push the season back a month.
Starting point is 01:50:43 You have a lot of people saying we've got to carry on as is. So be it without fans. A lot of people are saying if you don't have fans, you don't have a college football season, then you should wait to the spring, so it gets at least an opportunity for some people to go. And that's the inherent problem with college football
Starting point is 01:51:01 is that you've got no governing body. Mark Emmert, the very, very poor president of the NCAA, very early on in this, said, let's leave it up to the individual conferences, basically exhausting them of any responsibility or any planning about how to maintain the season. And honestly, the SEC probably feels like they're ready to go. The ACC probably feel like they're ready to go. The Pac-12 probably doesn't. The Big Ten probably is up in the air and probably the same goes to the Big 12. But all I know is that there isn't anybody in this country and a college program that you would follow and care about
Starting point is 01:51:41 that feels like if summer practice had to start in a week, they'd be ready to go. Whether it be from testing, whether it be from protocols, whether it be from just making sure the guys are healthy, to, oh, by the way, the schedule for the season. There are games that are going to be played here in two months. Big-time games. You got Alabama playing USC.
Starting point is 01:52:04 You got a lot of cross-sectional matchups. I know my cougars are going to play Washington State and BYU this year. Do they scrap that? Because obviously what's going on in the West could be a lot different than those here in Texas. Does Rice and Houston even play? Does the University of Houston have the same protocols about making sure their athletes are ready to go as compared to what Rice is going through? U of H has a lot more money to spend on this than Rice ever would. So, you know, the NFL is going to try to paint a rosy picture today because that's what they've always been doing.
Starting point is 01:52:40 Major League Baseball, I think, is going to have to try to address the closures of camps today when they release a schedule. The one silent factor so far through all of this has been college football. So it would probably be, do you go Astros, Rangers open things up? That makes sense. That's going to be so weird. You'll be able to hear, you'll be able to hear, I mean, every little sound you'll be able to hear in the game. We've seen spring training games with little crowds, and you've heard the crowd,
Starting point is 01:55:37 the, the whispering, and you've heard the guys moving things around. Man, I can't. Do we know for a fact there will be no crowd? at any MLB games this year? We don't, but I'm assuming there's not going to be. This corona, this latest outbreak is really hurt. There shouldn't be, but I'm not as confident as you that we won't
Starting point is 01:55:56 allow it. Well, I think what you'll do is you'll probably have guys sign waivers, right? Yeah, I mean, they were at least thinking about it. Yeah, I mean, if you want to go, I'm not, I don't, that's really up to you. I would assume you'd social distance.
Starting point is 01:56:14 I would assume you'd have a face mask on. I would assume there be limited options for concessions, limited crowds. But yeah, I think that people, if they would like the option to do so, should be able to go. I actually wonder if you could see them do if they open stuff up. Concession similar to the XFL where you order on your phone rather than having to wait in line. They bring it to you? Yeah. I mean, that's the thing, right?
Starting point is 01:56:44 Like as we open different things, we've definitely learned a lot. lot about how we can try and keep distance. And that would be one way sporting events could do that. We ordered a pizza the other day at the house. We ordered two of them. And when I went out to go outside to get them, there were three pizza boxes. And I'm like, oh, yeah. I got me an extra pizza for some reason or something, you know, dessert, you know, crazy bread or whatever the hell it was. No, it was an empty box. They're separating the pizza from, like, I have a stool in front of my house. They put the box, the empty box on the bottom, and then they put the two pizza boxes on top
Starting point is 01:57:21 of that. There are no words for how disappointing that would be. I am so sorry for you. Well, I was so much, I was like, man, because usually they screen, you know, the number one rules they scree in the drive-thru. And then they scree in the takeout, too, because you ask for, you know, like some of the red pepper or the parmesan cheese and the in the delivery guy never has it with him right i thought man maybe they feel sorry for us maybe they're like hey you know what we appreciate
Starting point is 01:57:50 you during this uh july fourth weekend buying pizza from us we're gonna we're gonna throw on a cookie cake for you and no it was a empty box i went from uh i went from elation to borderline i don't want to eat now because i wasn't getting an extra something have this thing I've talked about before. I call it fat guy brain. Yeah. And just myself, if I saw an extra pizza box, like the level of excitement, I'm telling you, like it would hurt me.
Starting point is 01:58:20 Like, I would almost feel like they need to warn me that they're going to do that. Don't set me up for disappointment. Like, how about this? Do you ever go to, you know, the dual drive-thrus now, like McDonald's and whatever and stuff? Yeah. Where you go in, like, I'll, sometimes on my way to work, I'll get just a large ice tea. and I get up to the spot in the drive-thru, and they want to hand me this bag full of food.
Starting point is 01:58:45 I'm like, oh, should I take this? Because it sounds like it would be a great lunch. And then I realize, I can't do that. So I said, no, I just want the ice team. But that's what's happening is that these double drive-thrus have to guess what your order is. Yeah, I don't know that I had seen a ton of it before coming down here, to be honest with you.
Starting point is 01:59:11 Not to say there's none in Michigan, but I think they're a lot more popular here. But you know what? I don't think these restaurants were made for that, though. I mean, you're trying to take twice as many orders and jamming them through one line, right? I don't see the massive savings unless you just don't want the drive-through to be rooped around your restaurant. Well, and it's particularly weird when you do merge the lines. Like, sometimes with Waterburger, you have two separate lines and they stay two separate lines.
Starting point is 01:59:38 And that makes a little bit more sense to me. But when you merge them, I don't totally understand what the thought process is. Yeah, my guess is if I was ever to open up a drive-thru restaurant, I would spend the extra money and just have like a second little mini kitchen for the drive-thru side. You know what I mean? Where there's no confusion, you go, if you're just as good being in the second line as you were on the first line. Listen to us breaking down fast food critiques right now. Look, we hadn't talked about food yet on the show today, had we? That's true.
Starting point is 02:00:08 That's true. It's a must. It's a requirement. It's the daily checklist. It is, it is. What else on the checklist? If I miss anything in sports, I'm in my office here, so I'm trying to think of anything I've missed today
Starting point is 02:00:17 and we have not gone over. I mentioned Peter King and his surly-ass hot dog eating contest. We mentioned Carlos Correa telling his girlfriend or his wife not to get her nails done or her hair done. And by the way, numerous tweets coming in after I mentioned that story originally, basically saying that he's going to want him of getting hurt again this year. You know about him in the ribs, right? Actually, no, off top of my head, I'm not sure what that story is.
Starting point is 02:00:48 Well, he said he got a really, really hard massage from a masseuse, and she broke some rims of his. Oh, okay. Interesting. Yeah, I guess we're supposed to believe that. I mean, hey, I've heard lots of great stories from different athletes over the years. We thought that Daniela was being just, they were just kind of being rough in the bedroom. We couldn't prove that. That's believable.
Starting point is 02:01:14 and it would explain how he came up with his excuse. Well, I mean, the question is, the number one problem is that he never should. He got a masseuse from somebody that wasn't an Astros qualified masseuse. That was the problem. He was embarrassed about that. Hey, Matt, here's something you might have missed. Did she see the Antonio Brown stuff with the Texans? Oh.
Starting point is 02:01:37 I'm sure you love that story, right? Love's a strong term. I don't want him here. I mean, he's had his nine lives, right? Yeah, and I mean, I don't think there's any chance that happens, but there was some stuff popping off over the weekend about that. It was Chad John, right? Yeah, and then Deshawn Watson quote tweeted him, I believe, as well.
Starting point is 02:01:59 Well, that's because that's what athletes like to do. Just to get your attention. Just to get the attention. Just like Deshawn Watson did a bunch of lyrics of songs when his buddy DeAndre Hopkins got traded. Deshawn's going to be just fine after he gets a brand new contract just as soon as he waits and finds out what Pat Mahomes is going to be getting. Why is Schefter waiting so long?
Starting point is 02:02:25 Is somebody just being coy with him? I think that he probably would have liked to wait and announce it all at once, but he just knew how big the first part was. That, yeah, he hasn't gotten all the information yet. But that's coming from the agent, right? Oh, yeah. So if you're Adam Schaefter, and you call Lee Steinberg.
Starting point is 02:02:45 You say, Lee, what up? And he goes, I just signed Pat Mahomes to a 10-year extension in Kansas City. And he goes, wait, what? What's the next question after that?
Starting point is 02:02:56 How much money is it? I wonder if they're still working out the details of the finances of the contract. The only thing is Schefter has made it sound pretty, he's been pretty adamant that they have a reached agreement
Starting point is 02:03:13 on 10-year, contract extension. I don't think Schaefter says reached if they're not done. Okay, so with that being said, why would Lee Steinberg be so coy with Adam Schaeftor he's already got the information? Maybe his text messages are just really backed up right now and he hasn't found the one from Schaefter asking how much it was. Do you think Lee Steinberg is a good texter?
Starting point is 02:03:36 He might be, but, you know, when the news breaks that he just got his client a 10-year extension, I think his phone probably blows up. and Shepter's like, hey, what's up? You only gave me half the story. What's the other half? I think that's what I'm going to stand by. He's just, right now, he's dealing with a lot of messages. He's probably got a lot of clients trying to figure out if they can get to any of your deals.
Starting point is 02:03:58 Hey, where's mine? Why don't you get that for me? That kind of stuff? Exactly. Okay. I could go into that. I mean, they might as well retire his number, right? there's no reason to wear number 15 ever again in Kansas City.
Starting point is 02:04:15 I mean, that might be a little preemptive, but you probably like. Why not? You've got a 12-year contract. I mean, you are making him literally the franchise. And that's why I can't wait to see how the money is distributed, because if the NFL really takes it in the shorts this year because of no fans in the stands, where are they going to have this money and how much of his salary for the foreseeable future, at least the next two or three years, is going to be tied to the overall salary camp.
Starting point is 02:04:44 Shepter did just retweet Ross Tucker, who speculated that it's probably more than the 426-5 million Mike Trout got. I mean, that's not a confirmed number. No, but it seems to make sense. He'll be the richest athlete in sports, correct? Oh, yeah, I mean, easily. And then the indoor, I mean, does he even do an endorsement deal with anything? Does he even bother?
Starting point is 02:05:07 He's with someone right now nationally, isn't he? Yeah. Does it subway? I don't know who it is. I know I see his face on my TV. I see his girl on IG photos all the time. Not that I'm perusing or anything. Is she the one that was with him since high school?
Starting point is 02:05:22 Yeah, I would say I think she catches a lot of flack from some people. I think there's a lot of people who don't like her. Well, let me ask you this. Is it because she's all of a sudden now worth $400-something million? Yeah. That probably has something to do with it? Or do we just hate high school sweethearts in general? and that she hooked on to him because she knew he was going to make serious money.
Starting point is 02:05:47 People have bitterness towards high school sweethearts? She didn't, yeah, she didn't know he was going to do this at Texas Tech. I can tell you this from experience. Texas Tech quarterbacks typically don't do much in the NFL. So it was for him to, for her to think that all of a sudden he was going to go from being a Red Rader quarterback to being the highest paid player in sports, that's a pretty big presumption on her part. But now she loves her man and she's going to love that cash. When you're making that kind of money,
Starting point is 02:06:21 there's nothing you don't have to ask for or want. And that's the beauty of a long-lasting high school relationship. Starting point is 02:08:16 Back to Matt Thomas. And sports talk, 790. Home of Astros baseball. One thing I failed to mention, Charlie Daniels, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, best known for the devil went down to Georgia, died today.
Starting point is 02:08:40 after suffering a stroke he was 83 years old Charlie Daniels to me was the first country western guy I ever heard when I moved to Houston in 1979 it was right before Urban Cowboy he was in that that song the devil went down to Georgia is one of my all-time favorite songs kind of country rock
Starting point is 02:09:02 he was one of the first ever to do that but RIP to Charlie Daniels passing away at the age of 83 I can't name five Charlie Daniels song. I'm sure he's had five, but that's the only one I can really think of being a number one song, or being at least a song that I remember. All right. Also, later today, at 5 o'clock, we're down to two hours and 11 minutes. A majorly baseball schedule is going to be released, which should be interesting to see how many West Coast games they have.
Starting point is 02:09:37 You know, how many 9 o'clock starts, and frankly, we're always getting screwed by that because we are in the central time zone with the West team. But now that you're having to play San Diego, San Francisco, the Dodgers, you're just going to have more, unless they play a lot more day games. Problem is with the day games, you want to have as many eyeballs on those sets as possible, and it doesn't hurt.
Starting point is 02:10:00 It doesn't help the Houston market or the market in the West. I would assume that every travel day is going to be a day game because it's going to take a lot longer for these major league baseball teams to travel from testing to getting on planes and making sure to decline, you know. My guess the whole travel process is probably going to be 10 times more difficult today than it was, say, even just a year ago. You know what's so strange to me, Brendan, when you watch old sporting events, even stuff earlier this year, like the NBA is doing these shows on NBA called, they're calling them blank restart where you look at the different NBA teams and what they did before. We were five months ago, we were watching games in front of 18,000.
Starting point is 02:10:41 people. We were, NFL games had 75,000 people. The bowl games had 80,000, the championship games, all these, less than a year, calendar year ago. We had thousands and thousands and thousands of people jammed right next to each other. And now we don't even think about ever being any time in the near future, fans being at even any at one game. Isn't that weird? Sometimes when I watch TV, this doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes when I watch TV and I see like large crowd. environments, it, like, takes me out of it. Like, it makes it feel not real. You know what it does for me? It makes me miss yesterday year even more so. That you could go to a supporting event and cheer your team on and not worry about the person next to you giving you a virus. I mean, it sucks.
Starting point is 02:11:35 It absolutely sucks that this virus has screwed up our sports, delayed our events, caused, I mean, you know, hundreds of thousands of people illnesses, hundreds of thousands of deaths. I mean, I'm not even trying to minimize it just for sports. I'm talking about just in general. We can't go to the grocery store like we want to. We can't go to the bars like we want to. And then I put on ESPN where those will be an old classic game on. I'm like, man, there were people that were able to go see Alabama plays, you know,
Starting point is 02:12:09 Clemson for the National Championship. or I was doing the arena announcing for the Rockets and there were 18,000 people in TOTUS Center getting ready to watch the Lakers and a Rockets play. And all that's gone. And we're trying to make the best of it. We're trying to play a bubble season. We're trying to play a 60-game baseball season.
Starting point is 02:12:29 But today's news of the Astros having to close down camp because of not having the test in from Utah, it's a kick in the guy. it really is. So we have a Mohomes update. Oh, you do? It's not the update you're going to want, but we still have one. Go ahead.
Starting point is 02:12:49 Adam Schaefter says there are no official numbers on the 10-year extension yet, but multiple sources believe it will ultimately be tied to a percentage of the salary cap each season. The higher the cap goes, the more Mahomes makes. So like 21%, 22%, that kind of thing? Right. That seems almost scary on both sides. Well, even if he stays at a single percentage, let's say he's always 21%. The cap's going to go up every year, right?
Starting point is 02:13:27 I mean, that's the general belief. You don't think there's any concern at all with everything going on right now that that could change? Oh, I think for the next couple of years, I think it's going to change. But I think when you're putting together a 10-year deal, you're not thinking about that right now. You're thinking about in 2008, my 22% of the country, cap is going to be worth X amount of dollars. That's fair. As long as he's getting as much or more late in the deal, you're right. If it doesn't go down, then the late portions of this deal are going to be absurd.
Starting point is 02:13:59 I wonder if it does go down, does he ask for a higher percentage? Like, is he guaranteed a certain dollar amount. Like, if the NFL salary cap is down, say, 4%, does he have to, can he take 1% more of what the chiefs are off and have? Also, think about incentives. Normally incentives are dollar figures. Could incentives trigger higher or lower percentages? That might be why Shepter doesn't have the details.
Starting point is 02:14:25 This could be a very complex deal that he just can't give us a number two. That makes sense because, again, I don't, my guess is if he's done the legwork and found out this deal happened to begin with, that there's, they're not trying to be coy with him. You know who's staring at his computer is Sean, right? Staring in his computer. And his agent is staring at the computer. Every time I look at Twitter, there's different quarterbacks names trending on Twitter. So who's trending right now? Dach's got to be trending.
Starting point is 02:14:54 Deshawn. I actually just saw Mitch Trubisky as well. Well, that's because he sucks. But he's always going to be linked to. Yeah, Trubisky, Deshawn Watson. I saw Dak Prescott earlier. The Cowboys as a whole are trending. I mean, this Mahomes news has wrinkles all throughout the NFL.
Starting point is 02:15:13 And hopefully by the time we get together tomorrow, we'll have a firmer grasp of exactly what kind of money that is going to be.
