Lunch timers. This is the Matt Thomas show.
1002 in H-Town. Good morning. And welcome to the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
This is weird for us too. So just help us navigate these waters.
To my right is Ross Villarreal. I'm Matt Thomas. And it's great to have you with us.
Hey, Matt. You're saying, well, what's happening, lunch timers? Well, that will be still a part of the show.
will not be until noon.
We'll do that because nobody has lunch at 10 o'clock in the morning unless you're 73 years old.
And brunch, nobody has brunch in the middle of the week unless you're making high seven figures.
I'm an alcoholic.
That's true.
I could go for a mimosa right now.
Oh, my gosh.
We are here, and to be brutally honest, we did not expect to be here 24 hours ago.
And we'll just get this out of the way.
we'll mention a couple times in the course the show.
Obviously, our parent company had a reduction in workforce yesterday.
And unfortunately, we lost a member of our team.
And I do call him a team.
We are a team.
Stay in North Fleet no longer with us.
So we will inherit his show spot.
And we will take this program until 2 o'clock.
So we'll be on for four hours every day between 10 and 2.
And it'll still be much of the same hijinks.
Yes.
Much of the chagrin of some people on Twitter.
50% more coffee.
Probably more coffee.
coffee. I don't know when I'm going to have lunch.
Because Ross and I do believe we should never eat while you're on the air.
And it's impossible to eat during commercial breaks because it's unhealthy.
You can't digest and it causes issues.
You want a burp on air?
Yeah, you don't want that.
But we are going to miss Stan.
It was a tremendous pleasure working with him.
We gave each other lots of good nature ribbing.
I mean, lots.
And I probably did more to him than he did to me.
But it was all in good fun.
I really enjoyed working with him.
We broke bread on many occasions.
I think he took half the tickets on my Rockets games last year,
and he's always welcome to have my Rocket's tickets again.
But unfortunately, our parent company did this nationwide.
It wasn't just Houston.
It was major markets all throughout the country.
And sadly, there had to be a change.
So we're all having to kind of step up a little bit and move time slots and add hours to the show.
So if you love us, you get an extra hour.
If you hate us, well, we're going to give you an opportunity to really.
love us again. I like that Matt. Very well put. Now there were some people that, and it's funny because
Stan put a tweet out yesterday and I retweeted it and put my own personal comments on it. And it's,
you know, people are very sad when, when hosts leave and you develop a personal relationship
with people. And then it also gives you an opportunity to take shots at other people on the station.
And there were a couple people in particular that did so. And I didn't appreciate that, but everybody's got,
that's what Twitter does is it gives you a chance to take cheap shots at people. And, uh,
they got took him out on me and I'm a big boy I can grow up but I mean I'm not going to just sit there and just take it so
to Kirk out there you can go to hell I don't the rest of you what I don't know you're just so funny well well anyways we're gonna miss Dan yes
fortunately I have been very lucky to be in this business a long period of time I know a lot of people around this country and I'm going to do whatever I can do personally
to get Stan back on the air, whether it's here or somewhere else.
So we will miss him.
And again, good nature ribbing between the two of us.
And we had a lot of fun, frankly more off here than we did on, and he will be missed.
But we're going to go on.
The show's going to go on.
Our lineup is now 6 to 10 with Sean.
I'll be on with Ross from 10 o'clock until 2.
We're going to keep many of the same elements.
We're going to shift a few things around.
Like I said, you can't wake at the line.
You can't say good morning or what's happening lunch timers at 10 o'clock.
can you say good night strippers
Well 10 a.m. a little too late.
The strippers are going to stay at Fridays at noon.
How?
Because there's no way they're getting up at 10 o'clock on a Friday morning.
Okay, you're going to keep it to noon.
You know, originally it was 2 o'clock when we were on 2 to 4.
Yeah, yeah.
And that was the perfect time for good morning strippers.
It was because the 2 o'clock is their will house.
So we will visit with them on Friday's still at noon.
Okay.
We'll solve all of our main features with shut your bum ass up and gut feelings to tell the
We're going to have got feelings today at 11 o'clock.
And again, we don't, I mean, this is brutally honest,
and we're not going to spend a lot of time on this.
We didn't know about this until 3.30 yesterday afternoon.
So we're kind of massaging what we're doing.
So you're going to hear some weird liners and stuff like that,
and we're going to ultimately fix everything.
It's just not going to be done overnight.
Yeah, I would just say, I'm with you.
My head is spinning, and we didn't know about this.
It's an unfortunate part of this media business that we have chosen to be in.
I mean, look at any national media company.
There's been layoffs all over the place, and unfortunately, I heart media hit by those,
and I'm very saddened, and I'm saddened and, well, all so tired, Matt.
It's fine.
But we're going to make it.
We have the greatest jobs on Earth.
Absolutely.
100%.
A little bit of the sleep deprivation last night because I didn't, you know, was obviously
concerned about Stan and where he's going to do with his career.
And then a rocket game last night, you know, started 35 minutes later than it normally does.
Nice Rockets win.
Yes.
And we'll play a little musical montage later in the show to honor some of those highlights.
Let's go.
And I was concerned it wasn't going to be a bunch of Jalen Green highlights until the fourth quarter last night.
He had a couple of clutch ones.
So overall stat line doesn't look great, but two four eight from three, yuck, but two clutch ones in the fourth quarter?
Thanks.
Yeah.
All right.
So gut feelings today.
And if those of you that are new to the 10 to noon, so gut feelings is a segment we do every Tuesday where you just calling him make sports predictions.
Now, you could certainly make a political prediction if you wanted to, but we don't talk politics in the show.
so I'll let Michael Barry handle that part of it.
I was going to ask if you actually did what we're going to make a gut feeling on what happens.
And this is, again, for those of you listen to the show, we don't ever talk politics,
but I will say this with it being Election Day.
Uh-huh.
I really don't know.
I'm fascinated.
You're not fascinated.
I'm fascinated by the media coverage of it.
Circus.
It is.
But, and I'll be honest, I have serious XM on my car.
And I do have Fox, CNN, and MSNBC.
bam, bam, bam.
So the three channels that I move on my presets past my music and of course 790 are those channels.
And I was just flipping literally every five minutes coming into work today.
And everybody sees things completely differently.
One network has it one way.
One network has another way.
And it's, I don't even know if when I was a younger man going into college that I would have been able to figure out the 25, 30 years later,
we would have broadcast networks that claim their journalism that are so diametrically opposite of each other.
Like when I was growing up, CNN was news, polarizing.
Yes.
It was, here's what's going on.
Yes.
Here's the weather.
Here's the sports.
Here's the race A, race B.
I mean, but it's not that anymore.
So, again, I'm a consumer, not an enthusiast, but I'm a media consultant.
humor of this stuff. And so today to me is, to me, is fascinating. I will not be watching the election
returns until very late because my daughter's got a playoff volleyball game. And so that kind of helps
that a little bit. Yeah, I'm running away as far as possible. You should have to our game.
No, where is it? It's at Summer Creek, I think. Where is that? And humble?
What time? Uh, six o'clock. How long do the games normally last? About an hour and a half?
Put me down as maybe. Okay, you're not coming. That's fine. That's my neck of the woods. I'll show up.
Oh, yeah.
You know what?
If Connor goes, can we bring a cooler a beer?
You're not allowed to bring alcohol into a high school.
Okay, can we bring a pouch of wine?
Can we tailgate outside?
Yeah, can we tell you could?
The weather's going.
Is the weather going to be better by later today?
Can we, can we, yeah, get a grill going, crank some tunes and get a case of beer?
Now, we are pre-gaming today.
So if you want to join us with the pregame, you're welcome.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Well, Umble's finest restaurants of the Chuckie Cheese off of 1960 and 59 or what?
City, Humble, you have lots of great restaurants.
Don't let Ross.
Oh, the last remaining pot.
Manchos. Where is the finest dining in humble Texas?
I don't know. We're going to find out later today.
I'm like literally going to go to the movies or something.
I'm trying to disengage as much as possible from this evening.
All right. Yeah.
So we will be with you for four hours every day.
We're going to bring the energy because we're going to drink lots of coffee.
So if you're a coffee company out there, we'd like to sponsor this radio show.
Oh, please.
We are right here.
Ross to handle the cold brew side of it.
I'll handle the warmer stuff.
And that wasn't bad.
No, no, I was accurate.
I was going to say that I'd get me in trouble.
I don't think it did.
Okay, so Rockets last night take care of the Knicks 109 to 97,
a nice impressive win over a good New York team that has been beset by numerous injuries.
We'll get to that a little bit on the show today.
Jonathan and Alexander did a really nice story today in the Houston Chronicle
about why he thinks the Texans will not be active.
Today is the NFL trade deadline.
So we have MLB Free Agency.
Yes.
We have the NFL trade deadline.
And we have the election.
We're not going to talk about that.
That's right.
I'm not going to talk about that.
And with the Rockets winning last night against the New York Knicks.
So that's a radio program right there.
And we got people making trades that don't involve the Houston Texans.
Correct.
Are there any of them huge?
Like worthy of a Branky news sounder?
No, I wouldn't say necessarily.
Cowboys traded a fourth rounder for Jonathan Mingo, which, by the way, I do need to make it up.
Does Carolina just like, trade?
everybody off?
Yeah.
What do you mean?
They're the Panthers.
I mean, they beat the Saints
this week, but
they're in Selmo.
The Saints are terrible.
They just fired their coach.
Yeah.
No disrespect to gore.
But I have to make
an apology.
You were right.
I was wrong.
About?
When we come back.
Oh.
Now, for those of you
that are unfamiliar with the radio show,
Ross never thinks he's ever wrong about anything.
That is not true.
And so this will be worthy of you listening
to this radio show coming out of the break
because you do absolutely want to find out
what he did.
You never admit it to me.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
If you want to join our conversations today,
I believed yesterday we did something called
to tell the truth that I really think in my mind
that Nick's going to pull something off
to get something for in terms of a potential
offensive line depth and a wide receiver
and Jonathan Alexander, the Chronicle, says otherwise.
7-13-212-5-790.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We're here till 2 o'clock this afternoon.
afternoon right here on Sports Talk 790.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
Matt Thomas on Sports Talk 790.
This is the earliest of this show with you and I have ever been together.
We did the mornings with Lance many years ago, but 10 to 2 is our new spot.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
If you're new to the 10 o'clock hour with us, thank you for being a part of the show.
If you know the show at all, we do love to talk and interact with the audience.
It's not just us listen to ourselves talk for four hours in a row because I've listened to us,
so we're not particularly entertaining.
But we want to get you guys involved.
So please always feel like you've got an avenue to discuss anything from rockets to Astros to free agency to the Texans coming up with the Detroit Lions on Friday.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-1-2-7-90.
Now, before the break, you alluded to something that I was right on and that you were wrong or just that I was right?
Both.
Okay.
I tried to last week downplay how good of a receiver DeAndre Hopkins still was.
I thought he was washed, done.
I thought it was a trade that was going to maybe work out for the Chiefs,
but not make a huge impact.
And he was fantastic for the Chiefs last night.
And Travis Kelsey was catching everything too.
Even if he's not going to get that open, he's still got great hands.
He's still a good receiver.
And I mean, a couple of touchdowns.
What did he have, like seven, eight grabs?
I don't remember the exact stat line.
He is a difference maker for them.
Like, I think the Texans would like to make a difference maker.
Now, again, the only receiver that's really out there that's left,
if you really are worried about the receiving core for the Texans, is Adam Thielen.
Other than that, everybody's basically gone, right?
Yeah.
There may be a couple other folks, but that don't come right to the top of mind.
Would that be three receivers traded by the Panthers?
So they traded Deontay Johnson to the Ravens.
They have now traded Jonathan Mingo to the Cowboys.
By the way, for a fourth rounder, Jerry Jones, what are you doing?
It's Jonathan Mingo.
Possession receiver at best.
And yeah, Adam Thielen's like 33 years old, and he would be kind of a slot guy.
I mean...
Well, the thing of it is, if you went to go get Adam Thielen, are you thinking to yourself,
is he better than Hutchinson slash Mechie slash who am I forgetting?
Robert Woods?
Robert Woods.
The answer to that is yes, but at what price do you want to give up to get a guy like that?
Yeah, at what price and you like running Tank Dell?
Well, inside or outside.
He would be primarily a slot guy.
So that would be probably Hutchinson on the outside.
And then METI, you're losing some of John Metsi production, which I mean there has been no John M.
M. production.
All right.
So, again, I brought up Jonathan M. Alexander's article, and he's a good follow on Twitter at John M. Alexander.
I'll just say that his story was concerning to me because, again, his lead headline was,
Texans don't anticipate making any moves.
And I'm like, oh, why?
So then, and his subject line on his chronicle whole story, he says, here's why.
First of all, it sounds like to me, we played the press conference yesterday with D'Amico,
that he likes the guys in a building.
Now, again, that could be one thing publicly said, but privately mean another.
But if you don't make a deal today to go find another offensive lineman,
your public words are more private than anything you can bark at inside the building.
you don't make a move, then you are showing the audience,
your fan base, that you are happy with what's there.
And I can't imagine that to be the case.
By the way, three o'clock deadline today.
Quoting D'Amico from yesterday,
with Nick and his staff,
we're always looking to make our team as good as we can possibly be.
I do have a heightened sense of making a move just to make a move.
The answer to that question was no.
We're always looking to add to our team, add to our depth.
That's something we do constantly throughout the year.
Well, of course, every NFL team does.
That's why they bring in players every Tuesday for workouts.
That's not atypical of a Texans team or for that matter any of the other 31 teams.
Texans do not have a lot of salary cap space, according to Jonathan and his story.
They already are going to lose a second round pick in this next year's draft coming up because of the Stefan Diggs trade.
Yes.
And the reality is, I think they think that Nico Collins comes back.
He and Tank Dill are the one to punch and everybody else.
And why would you go trade for a number three receiver when you're number one that could be coming back, if not this week?
Certainly probably have perhaps a week after that.
And we'll know more about Nico when the team practice is starting tomorrow.
Yeah, I think you add all that up.
It's Nico coming back, giving away draft capital, salary cap restrictions, and maybe nothing's going to happen.
And maybe there's nobody they love.
You have to love somebody first.
You just can't make a deal just to make a deal.
Right.
I mean, look, Nick Casario is on the phone.
I'm sure. Of course he is. But is he finding the right level of compensation given away for what he's going to get in return? That's another question. And then of course, with the NFL and the hard cap, we don't know what kind of. There's all these weird cap rules about accelerating bonuses and whatever stuff with contracts in the NFL. And you never know what the hell's going on. So there's just a lot of intricacies to this that even if there is no deal made, that doesn't mean that Nick Casario didn't try.
No, he wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't.
And I know that Nick does it.
Like, again, all 32 general managers on the phone constantly.
Yes.
There was a USA Today article out this morning that does not have an offensive lineman in their top 10 trade targets.
That means that the USA Today is determining what's good a trade and what's not.
But they were listing 10 players that may be still available for the trade deadline at 3 o'clock.
And none of them involved in offensive line.
You also don't need a huge impact left guard.
You need somebody to be replacement level because you've gotten below replacement level.
play all year. So if you get somebody that can at least hold the line a little bit, that's a
massive improvement from what you were getting from Kenyon Green. I just put on there when I saw
John Alexander's story this morning. I said, this is a good read. CJ, you don't want to read it.
I'm not trying to be flippant when I tell you this. If CJ, and this is something that every
single Texan fan listening to our voice right now would completely agree with, if CJ faces the same
sort of pressure he faced this week, or last week against the Jets.
He will not survive the season. Now, are there worse defensive lines that they'll face over
the course of the year? Yeah, Tennessee doesn't provide much. There are some dogs still
left on the Texan schedule, but there's also some really good teams coming up. And even if you
have a below average defensive line and below average front seven, they still provide pressure.
Every NFL team puts pressure on quarterbacks, some better than others. There are some
individual players that are better than others.
Ross, he's not going to survive if they continue to believe,
and they may be down to four and a half hours here,
that the guys that are currently in uniform are the ones that are good enough
to protect them the rest of the way.
It's not going to end well.
I think, yeah, they have to weigh all the factors we talked about,
but it's not even, I mean, you're going to face,
the Lions have DJ Reader.
I think they're good on the interior that you're playing this week.
you mentioned some of the teams, but also like the teams that you want to beat in the
AFC, like Chris Jones and the Chiefs, and I mean, the Steelers are good with Cam Hayward and
T.J. Watt, like, if you want to make it anywhere in the AFC, I think most of the best
defenses in football, the Broncos, the Chargers, the Chiefs, the Steelers, like,
they're in the AFC. If you want to make it out of the AFC, and that's the goal. That's the goal
of Domingo, Rimeon. Enough of this AFC South crap. You want to do more than that.
They do. Absolutely. That's the goal. If you want to make it out.
of these playoffs, you have to be better on the line.
And that's either internal improvement, which I think is what they're going to bank on,
and we'll see, because we weren't talking as much about all these pressures.
It's been really bad these last three weeks.
The first five weeks, it was a little bit better.
So if they're saying, you know what, we've got to get back to basics,
we've got to do what we were doing early on in the season and all that type of stuff,
which I don't necessarily see.
Or maybe they see it's addition by subtraction with Kenyon Green.
I don't know.
But either way, we all know.
It has to get better.
It has to get better.
and you cannot go into the AFC playoffs
because the AFC South is done.
It's done.
You cannot go into the playoffs
with the line playing the way they are.
Because you're going to want to be in the four seat in the playoffs.
You're going to have the worst division record among the four teams.
Which means you're going to take on the best wild card.
Right?
Yes.
Which right now, I don't even know who that is, but it doesn't matter.
If it's any one of those teams I named, they all have really good defenses.
And again, even the worst teams in the NFL have some sort of pass rush.
This isn't a question of...
True.
CJ is going to take a seven-step drop, have a sandwich, a cup of coffee, get on a Zoom call, and then throw the ball.
He's going to face pressure.
And the Texans' offensive line this year, collectively, have not been able to handle it.
1027.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We're with you until 2 o'clock this afternoon.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
We'll talk to our buddy KJ next.
We're going to get to you as we take your calls all the way to 2 o'clock, gut feelings at 11 o'clock.
And today's edition, believe or not, is back in.
at 150 today.
It's kind of weird to have to say that time.
It's been a while in this side spot.
713-212-5-790.
1027 on Sports Talk 790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
It is the new time of the Matt Thomas show with Ross,
and we're trying to figure out when we're going to do some of our signature segments.
We'll have gut feelings coming up today at 11 o'clock.
Ross's NFL rewind, the most interesting things, at 1130.
And then we're going to do something new every day at 12 noon.
I called something I really thought hours over.
I called it the news at noon.
I love it.
You know, if local TV stations can call them themselves the news at noon, why can't we do it?
You're a font of ideas, Matt.
That's why we appreciate you.
The news at noon will be 90% sports.
Oh!
And one off the beaten track story.
Easy, easy, easy, peasy.
So Ross will choose three or four things.
And then I'll be the one to have to comment on these things, which is, and I don't want to know what these things are in advance.
Okay, good.
It kind of adds to the spontaneity of the segment.
So we've got the news at noon at 12 before that NFL rewind and before that and we've got gut feelings.
We'll still do shut your bum ass up.
We will still do believe it or not.
We'll have the Fantasy 5 occasionally.
We'll do Fantasy 5 Quincy Jones projects.
I'll go first, Thriller.
I'll go Sanford and Sun theme.
Ooh, I'll go off the wall.
I'll go back-to-back Michael Jackson.
I'll go anything that he did with Ray Charles.
The whiz.
Ooh, the whiz.
You said you never saw The Wiz, right?
No, I don't think so.
I didn't.
Do I need to watch?
Is that a must watch?
No, no, no.
But it does, there was, I mean, to see a young Michael Jackson, Diana Ross as,
The Wicked Witch or the other witch?
No, she was the Dorthing.
Oh, she was Dorothy?
Yeah.
Nipsy Russell was, I believe, the Tin Man, don't hold me to that?
I won't.
Okay.
And they had a song called E's On Down, E's On the Road.
That was a pretty catchy little tune back in the day.
I loved the Wiz.
I was great.
I remember seeing it as a kid.
Wonderful.
All right.
713, 212-5-790.
KJ.
with his at 1033 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
KJ, good morning to you.
Morning, fellas.
It's been a while, man, due to the schedule of conflicts and work.
I haven't been able to time in with you to as much as I used to have.
I typically touch in with Ross on occasion, but just again, love to show.
Thank you.
But here's a million-dollar question, Matt and Ross.
Inquired minds want to know.
I know you said you're going to have to shuffle around your segment scheduling,
because of an additional two hours.
But this is the question Matt Thomas fans want to know.
Are you going to still do the good morning strippers at 12 o'clock?
Or are you going to do it at 10 o'clock?
Because, you know, technically on Fridays, they still sleep at 10 o'clock.
You know what I'm saying?
Well, I said, honestly, that strippers never get up at 10 o'clock in the morning.
So it will always still be at Friday nighting at 12 noon.
Okay, cool.
cool, cool. Now, this is my thing
with the Texas. I heard
one of you guys mentioned earlier
that the offensive line
was performing somewhat better the first
four or five games of the season. I don't
think it was necessarily good then. I think
they had been fully exposed to
the extent they've been exposed to now
and now that the film is out on
their vulnerabilities, teams are taking
full advantage of it. But this is my
thing with the Texas, the
O line. Because again, this thing
can
the efficiencies of the
offensive line can
filter into other aspects
of the game of the overall
player of the team as far as the psyche is concerned
I know from ethical standpoint
they get paid millions to do a job
I get that but just from a human being standpoint
this can frustrate you to the point to where it affects
other aspects of the game I look at the
offensive line and again I don't know
I don't know where Shaq Mason was drafted
but the majority if not the offensive line
in its entirety was second
second or third round picks are higher.
So that means that there was something
seen tangibly in these guys
when they were taken and or resigned
onto the Texas because they're no longer Bill O'Brien guys.
I'm wondering if these guys as a collective
were thought to have this much talent,
yet all of them are falling short, not one or two.
Could this be a schematic thing
because you don't miss on that many up-around draft picks
and have as a collective
all of these guys coming short?
so I'm wondering if it's a schematic thing
and my question to you guys
before I get off of here.
I know this was more or less a one and done
for Stefan Diggs and now that he's hurt,
what do you guys think the likelihood
is of the Texans resigning him for a team-friendly deal
if because of his agent injury,
he doesn't get a lucrative deal in the market.
I'm going to sit back in listening.
Let's extra two hours, fellas.
All right, thank you for KJ. I appreciate it.
Well, I've been on the record. I don't think he comes back
under any circumstance.
He might be able to go a sweetheart-friendly deal
from a variety of different teams.
Does it mean the Texans want to give him a sweetheart-friendly deal?
Has he been, relatively speaking, a choir boy with the Texans?
Has there been a good relationship?
Yes.
But a lot of good guys, Ross, are good relationship guys, good teammates, team captains,
and you're coming off a severe injury and you're on the wrong side of 30.
Unless the Texans just don't have any other options,
which they will obviously have options,
I don't think he's going to get anything close to the kind of money he thinks he's going to go get.
So I would think at this point, if I'm Stefan Diggs, I recuperate, I recover, and I try to sell myself as, hey, I got still something left in the tank.
I just don't know if the Texans would be the team to do it.
Yeah, I mean, it's possible.
I wouldn't rule it completely out because he, one of the reasons they mutually agreed to avoid out all of his contract is that was Stefan Diggs betting on himself saying, I'm going to have a smash year in 24, and I'm going to hit the market and I'm going to make a bunch of money.
Well, obviously, that didn't happen.
So we've also seen Nick Casario be someone who likes to sign prove it deals to guys who are veterans with something to prove and towards the end of their career.
And Stefan Diggs fits that bill as well.
So you have somebody coming off a major injury that you could sign to a short term if Stefan Diggs thinks I need a one-year deal.
that way I can catapult myself to a bigger deal,
but he's going to be a year older coming off in an ACL injury,
so I don't know how realistic that is from both sides.
The types of players you just described on the Prove-it deal
are usually just guys.
They are extra linebackers, they are defensive linemen
that have had a handful of games.
I don't mean to stereotype on this, but I'm going to do it.
Wide receivers are a different breed.
Wide receivers are guys that think they are still the alpha dog.
that can still run these routes, they can still run down the field, catch everything that's thrown towards them.
I think the types of players that Nick Casarro brought in in the first couple of years, when he was a general manager,
were players that were just looking to prove themselves or on the wrong side of 30, that had no success and said,
hey, I'm going to go to Houston for a couple of years, prove that I'm worthy.
Grusier-Hill, kind of guys like that.
Stefan Dix has had a very, very successful NFL tenure.
I think him taking a, I got to prove it to other people kind of deal to stay in Houston is not in his repertoire.
Unless the market dictates it says, you know what, Stefan, you've got nowhere else to go.
If you want to play in the NFL in 2025, you will take a team-friendly deal in Houston.
Now, again, as how much as he loved Houston is compared to if all of a sudden, let's say Cincinnati was to get rid of T. Higgins and they brought him in on a contract that maybe paid him double or triple that he would be paid here.
We don't know those answers.
Yeah.
Well, it was before Nick Casario's tenure, but Terran Matthew was somebody that was signed to a prove-it deal here and then went on to sign a bigger deal somewhere else.
Denzel Perryman, that Nick Casario did sign to a one-year deal and was a prove-it deal, and then he went on.
Like Cashman would be an example.
Yeah, I mean, that was, I think, did they trade for Blake Cashman?
I can't remember.
But those types of Ilka players are not the headlanners.
These are second-tier guys looking to reinvent themselves.
I mean, Perryman had been a pro bowler.
So, I mean, he had a pretty good NFL career, but that's just off the top of my head.
I don't know.
We can go through every Nick Casario transaction and maybe find those guys.
Right.
But the bottom line is, Nick Casario likes signing one-year proof it deals.
So if that becomes the case with Stefan Diggs, I could see it happening.
Yeah, I will go on the record and say that it will not happen.
Not that, not you put your name on it.
Yeah, I just, it's, it's not, it's, it's Stefan Diggs.
it's not just your run-on-the-mill receiver that's heard.
It's Stefan Diggs, huge ego.
Alvindon.
The ego wasn't a problem here.
They loved him here.
They voted him captain.
But again, it's who he is.
I don't take one year of Stefan Diggs and say he's a completely changed man.
I think I know who Stefan Diggs is.
Now, again, it's not going to be about what he wants.
It's what the market dictates.
Exactly.
If he can't get a big, if these two things happen, what are possible,
if Stefan Diggs has these quite frankly delusions that he is the number one receiver and going to get a big deal and he needs a one year prove it deal, he would sign here.
And Nick Cosseri would probably happily do it.
If Stefan Diggs may be a little more realistic and say, I need to take a multi-year deal at less money somewhere, then I think that actually lessens his chances of coming back.
Yeah.
Again, strictly I think in his days, I don't even know if the Texans would be so much interested.
Because again, when you reduce a contract, when you had three years left and down to one,
that was kind of indicated, that was done by Kassari over to say, you know, we're going to go all in, does it work, we're moving on.
Yes.
I know injuries aren't fair, but it didn't work.
You got hurt.
It can't work if you're not playing.
Not his fault.
Dems the breaks, but it had to work if he's playing in meaningful games in January.
Yeah, at this moment, they wasted.
or now after the injury, they wasted a second round pick.
Yeah.
Let's go to Jacob on the north side at 1041 on 790.
Jacob, good afternoon or good morning.
All right.
Hey, all he got to do is get healthy, man.
And he's going to get, because his hands, he's going to get another opportunity.
And no doubt, just like D.Hop.
They thought Dihat was done.
Jop, the guy.
If you can play that position, you can play it.
You don't forget how to lose it because your leg, you get injured.
But with the Texans, all right, this is my man, the coach second, first,
second year. What first
of all, his first year he came in and he
won, he won his particular
division. In the second year, he
leading his division. There's not too many
coaches, you name
them, came in in their first year ever
and won a division, second year
ever, leading a division. It's
not like you just come in and you're going to go to the
Super Bowl. The Texas was losing. They got
zero.
They have zero
championships in
their existence.
bringing a winning attitude and I think they got enough offensive line they
it's not like you can get okay we don't trade for office like a rival receiver
would rob receiver they get just run out running you know the the usual
routes what they got to know the schemes and this and that so it's not like okay
yeah he's the top of old line we're gonna pick plug them in he don't know the schemes
and then we're gonna take off they got guys on the practice squad they're gonna be
good they six and three when in the division is not some easy task so I think they're on the
right path and the owner know that they've been having to lose an organization.
They start to win and they're going to be all right.
This is going to be okay.
All right.
Thanks, Jake, for the phone call.
I don't share that optimism.
And you know what, Ross, in this, you may disagree with me on this and that's fine.
I don't think CJ shares that optimism.
I think CJ is showing little signs of frustration of, I know pressure comes.
It's part of the game.
But his accuracy now.
members have dropped considerably the last couple weeks.
He's having his worst little mini stretch of his young NFL career.
I don't think it's because he's lost anything off his fastball.
I think he is every bit as good as he was last year.
He's feeling the heat.
He's feeling the pressure.
I think I think frustration can grow.
And I think he's doing the right thing by saying it's just as much of me about anybody else.
But that's what quarterback is supposed to say.
Yeah, I don't mean.
I can't.
I don't know what C.J. Stroud is thinking.
I don't think that he's losing faith in this.
Yeah, I don't think he's losing face.
based in the organization.
I think he believes in his guys.
I'd know, especially not at Kenyon Green's down.
I think he knows that he has to play better himself.
He is missing something.
But if we called CJ right now and said, C.J., Nick is not going to get you an extra lineman
to add depth to this offensive line.
You think he'd be okay with that?
He would say, all right, that's fine.
We've got to roll with the guys we got.
I've got to be better.
No excuses.
And please use a warm spatula when you scoop me off the turf.
Hmm.
Like oil it up?
Like a canola oil.
Yeah.
I don't like it.
I think Texans fans don't like it either.
And here's the problem.
Again, you just, here's the biggest thing that Casero's going to have to fight.
There just probably isn't an all-pro left guard sitting around going,
I'll come in and help or right guard, whatever the case.
That's the thing.
And then, I mean, I'm going to imagine the prices, if really Jonathan Mingo was just traded for a fourth rounder,
that's that's steep and so if the prices are going to be too high for nick casario i understand
him not wanting to mortgage the future and saying we have guys in-house who are going to get better
you're already probably better with kenyon green going down but it's still a rossi and again i'm
i'm saying i feel like i'm talking on both sides my mouth here it still feels pro what's the
opposite of proactive not reactive um just standing pat just doesn't feel like the right thing to do
It just doesn't.
I don't know why.
I don't know.
Stagnet?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I know.
But also.
Because it wasn't just a Jets game, Ross.
It's been this entire season.
Yeah, in particular.
And I don't know.
Maybe he's, and honestly, he might be in a no-win situation.
And I can fully accept that.
But I can guarantee you that the novice or even the hardcore Texan fan, if he faces
serious pressure this week.
Detroit got another guy in their trade deadline just yesterday.
think. Yes, they did. They got the, they got a
DM from the Brown. Zadariah,
Smith? Zadaria Smith? What was it?
Yeah. Something. Whatever. But point
being is if CJ has a similar
game where he's constantly facing the hurries
and pressures that he faced last week,
the organization is going to get called
on the carpet for saying that, just like in the Astros.
The Astros don't make moves. People say,
well, what is Dana Brown doing? What does James
Click doing? What does Jeff Leno doing?
You're close.
You're as close as you have been
in a long time.
There isn't one lineman out there on these NFL streets that could potentially get you over the top, not over the top, but at least make you feel a little bit better about the situation.
Also, speaking of the Astros, what happened?
They traded for the U.S.
Kukuchi and it was a firestorm and everybody hated it and it was the worst trade in the history.
But it listed something.
Dana Brown is a dummy and Dana Brown is the worst general manager ever.
And maybe sometimes these guys know more than we do.
But at least they did something.
Yes, they did.
And again, if, if you're telling me it's Kenyon Green out and Jared Patterson in, they should.
should be better. But Jared Patterson's far from
an all-pro. He's a swing guy. Right. But if it's
going to cost them a second or third-round pick to get an all-pro,
then they're not going to make that move. Well, I don't think it...
We don't know. I don't suggest... No, there's no
second-round picks going for swing lineman.
That's just not going to happen. That's not possible.
It's a fourth-rounder just went for Jonathan Mingo.
That's also Jerry Jones. But 80%
of the trades have been
involving fifth, sixth and seventh-round picks if you look
at it. 1047. It is the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross. We're with you today until 2 o'clock.
713-21-2-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
Rockets got a nice win last night against the Knicks.
We'll discuss that next here on 790.
Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk 790.
On the baseline, those at Inouement Thompson, back out.
Jalen, straight on three.
Yes!
Huge three-pointer for Jalen Green.
That's his first one in seven drives.
98-92 Rockets
He had two threes in the fourth,
eight points overall
And man, I was glad that Jaylon woke up
Because it would have been a second straight game
And I don't believe that the Twitter streets on Rockets
Would have been particularly kind
To our favorite off guard for the Houston Rockets.
Rockets win last night
Over the New York Knicks
As we continue here on the Matt Thomas show
For those of you just joining us,
we are now 10 to two weekdays
here on Sports Talk 790.
All of our favorite segments still around,
all the conversation as we continue to be,
and I'm probably saying this,
I feel like we are the most,
it's always a cliche term,
the most interactive radio show tomorrow.
But it's true, Matt.
But it is literally the truth.
A lot of times cliches are there because they're true.
Yeah, okay.
I respect that.
Taking it one game at a time.
It's true.
You should take it one game at a time.
We're going to take our show one show at a time.
One segment at a time.
We've got gut feelings coming up at 11 o'clock.
Normally we do those at 1.000.
It's like we're on West Coast time now.
That's just how you have to think about it.
Well, I was thinking about this.
What about when you go West Coast with the Rockets, by the way?
It'll be 8 to noon.
I'll have to be able to have lunch before a game.
That's true.
Well, you get a nap.
Naps more important, yeah.
I'll order room service and go take a nap.
Yeah.
All right, so the Rockets take care of the Nix last night, 109 to 97.
Nix played eight players, of which one played five minutes.
The other seven combined to play.
Like, well, all the starters, two of the five starters, McKale Bridges and Jalen Brunton each had 40 minutes,
and then O.G. Anerobie almost had 40 by himself.
Rockets get a victory and Reed Sheppard played his best game career, high seven points for him.
Rockets got a good performance out of Alpi, 25 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, four block shots in the game.
Wow.
Matter of fact, the Rockets had six blocks collectively as a group.
Had a 15-point second quarter lead.
New York tried to come back.
Four lead changes very early in the contest,
but the Rockets were able to outscore the Knicks in the fourth quarter,
28 to 22 to even their mark on the year.
And now we'll have the San Antonio Spurs in tomorrow night.
You did not mention somebody who I could argue was the MVP of that game.
I meant Thompson.
Yes.
Did you see?
I mean, you saw it.
I was going to say, have you ever said, did you see this?
Yes.
If I didn't, because I could do you in the bathroom?
I know you saw it.
But did you see, he was locking up Jalen Brunson.
Yeah.
He was locking him up.
And we're talking about one of the great perimeter scores in this league.
Passing and driving.
He was shutting him down with his length and positioning and intelligence.
It was awesome.
A man is going to be a player that I think Rocket fans are going to just love.
The issue is going to be, does the perimeter shot ever become respectable?
It's showing a little bit of signs.
He knows where his strengths are.
certainly not at the three point line.
He's letting him go from the corner, which it feels like he's got the green line from the corner everywhere else.
It's the easiest spot in theory.
The metric said it's the easiest three-point shot.
Yes.
How about the past fake middle of the lane?
The ball fake?
A little fundamentals, little seventh grade basketball.
It was good.
It was good.
It was good.
But yeah, a nice win for the Rockets last night.
Didn't get a great night from Jaylen.
Five of 16, two of eight from three.
But again, eight of those 15 points he had in the fourth quarter.
Van Blit was really hot early.
He made his first four shots.
He finished 8 of 13 for the game.
Dylan Brooks had some threes as well.
It was good.
Get any more of those?
And so overall it's been, you know, again, what are they 500 now?
Or maybe you get any more?
4 and 3.
4 and 3, you do on-paced guy?
Yeah?
But you had about 48, 7-48 wins somewhere in that range?
Also, they were 0 in 3 in games that I worked.
Oh, really?
Now they're one and three.
I did listen to show last night.
Oh, well, you were the one.
I got one call.
I felt like it was worthy.
If you're going to take the time to do it, I'll take the time to listen.
I appreciate that.
You also want to know behind the curtain.
I was kind of distracted in my opening monologue because I was praying that Patrick Mahomes didn't score a touchdown so I could lose in a fantasy game.
I know.
I won by three points despite the fact that Travis Kelty.
Let's go Toros.
The Toros have won two straight.
I still despise fantasy sports.
Come on.
We need you in the league.
I mean, I went from 10th place to seventh last night.
You're looking good, Maddie.
Toros are charging up the standings.
For those of you don't know, I've given up on fantasy football.
This is my last year.
You're like the 2024 Astros.
You started off in a rut, but now you're making your charge.
You're making your move.
So did you bury me or no?
No, we didn't make a, no, the 2024 Astro.
Not 05.
Okay, so 05 they were buried.
We didn't put a gravestone on the Toros just yet.
All right, one hour in the books.
We've got three more to go.
We are going now from 10 to tune here on Sports Talk 790.
713-212-5-790.
the way you can reach us on this show today.
When we come back, we'll introduce the segment to those 11 o'clockers that don't know what we do.
It's called gut feelings.
This is where you literally call in with a prediction about anything sports related.
If you hit, you call us back in the future weeks and brag about it.
If you're wrong, we typically don't make fun of you.
Typically.
Now, occasionally we might.
713-212.5.790.
Gut feelings next on 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
Listen up, girls and more Matt Thomas.
Yo, they got a good feeling.
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas show.
All right, this is how it works.
By the way, you're like, worse, why are you guys starting so early?
We started 10 o'clock, and we used to go out every day until 2.
There was a programming change, a reduction in workforce in our parent company.
We wish Dan nothing but the very best.
We enjoyed our time with him.
And now, because Station has asked, we are now in the 10 to 2 slides.
here every day, five days a week, sports talk 790.
Ross, it is time for us to do a segment we used to do every Tuesday at 1 o'clock.
We're going to now do it at 11 o'clock.
And like I said, some of our segments we're going to figure out good times where we have
the NFL rewind at the bottom of the hour.
Yes.
Which I'm sure will include a lot of the Tampa Bay Kansas City game from yesterday.
Oh, huge.
Then we have today at the news at noon where you'll find four sports headlines or
thereabouts and maybe one non-sports headline.
Okay.
And you will throw things at me.
and I'll have to come up with Woody Riparte responses to your questions.
Lovely.
It should be great.
All right.
Gut feelings.
You call 713-212-579.
7-13-212-5-790.
You make a sports prediction.
You hit it right.
You call us back.
If you get it wrong, don't worry about it.
Now, Ross, you always keep track of how do we do on our gut feelings.
How did we do last week?
Yeah, but I guess I don't always do a great job.
I only wrote for you that the Texans will lose and then they take.
and the Texans take the under. Yep, I had that.
Did you do anything else? Do you remember?
That's all I wrote down for you. Sorry.
Let's see. I wrote that the Texans lose to the Jets 19 to 16.
Yeah, not bad.
Kind of close.
Yeah.
I had the Rockets in their next three games against Dallas, Golden State, and the Knicks.
Two and one?
One and two.
Oh, I'm glad when you're wrong on those things.
I'm glad I'm happy to be wrong on that.
Yeah, for sure, for sure.
I thought it might not go well for them the way that they were showing early on in the season,
but a huge win at Dallas and a nice win against the Knicks yesterday.
Conn McGovern had Joe Mixen getting a touchdown, which I believe he did.
And he also had a Tank Dell touchdown that did not happen.
He had Dalton Schultz over 50 yards.
He had three catches for like 21 yards or something like that.
Yeah, it was 21 yards.
It was basically Tank Dell and nobody else on that last Thursday.
Tank Dell was great.
And then everybody else,
let's get Nico back this week, please.
And he had the Texans winning 23 to 17, unfortunately.
What was it, 23 to 13?
They could have won that game.
The Jets tried to hand it to him over and over and over again, and they lost.
Yeah.
Terrible.
All right.
So again, we don't ever brag on our gut feelings.
Well, that's actually not true.
As soon as I hit one, I go to Twitter immediately and put it up there.
I'm feeling good about my one from two weeks ago.
Oh, by the way, Dodgers in five.
Remember that one?
Yes, you did.
That was an awesome one.
I was very proud of that.
Yeah, we're proud of you, Matt.
and two weeks ago I did have Jalen Green put my name on it,
best offensive season of his career.
And he's loved the team in four times so far?
Five out of six.
Five out of six?
No, no, no.
You're right, you're right.
Sorry.
Now four out of six.
Four to seven.
Five out of seven.
Five out of seven, final answer.
Are you sure?
Yes.
Okay.
I think it's four or seven, but don't hold me to it.
Like last night was Alpy.
I don't want to bet you.
Lifetime full of a bet, Ross.
It's just not every single time.
You don't like to gamble?
Let's go.
I don't like to gamble.
the gamble and everything. All right.
I would bet you on when the light's going to turn green. I don't care.
You know, it's funny because Ross and I will go to a sports bar during NCAA tournament and we will bet on free throws.
Yes.
We will bet on what commercials coming up next, the category. That's always a fun one.
I'll tell you probably the dumbest bet I ever made, but I don't regret it, was me and my brother were arguing about how bad the service was from a waiter.
And we bet over under how many minutes it would be before she came back.
See, I think that's not dumb. I think that's actually interesting.
you're reinventing new ways to make prop bets.
So was that a muckers in Austin and I won.
What did you win?
Do you buy a round or something like that?
I don't remember with a bet.
Okay.
It might have been 20 bucks.
Hmm.
I do like the one, I've never done this before,
when Kramer on Seinfeld was in the lounge at the airport,
and they were betting on when flights were coming in.
Yeah, that's good.
That's actually a pretty good one.
All right.
Delayed.
713-212-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-19.
Here's my political gut feeling for today.
Oh, gosh.
this show tomorrow morning begins at 10 o'clock we will not know who the president is president elect by tomorrow at 10 o'clock okay so there's still will be counting yes okay we will not have a president elect tomorrow at 10 o'clock no hanging chads though right there could be hanging chad is in most of states electronic now yeah most are not all but most are okay hold on election not decided by tomorrow 10 a.
good god what did it drag out for like three days last time uh it depends on yeah four five days in some respects yeah
It's just to be too close.
I think candidate A is going to be
Candidate B 50.1 to 49.9.
That's just me.
Okay.
My gut feeling is the candidate you're supporting
deserves to win the election.
That's a good one.
You're going to probably hit that one pretty nicely.
All right, as far as sports predictions are concerned,
do not hate me on this.
I might.
Texans lose by double digits this week.
What?
I know you're going to be mad at me.
No, I'm not mad at you.
It's the freaking lions.
Why?
is that line only three and a half?
It's one of those
What Am I Missing lines?
And you know what?
Fine. I got a gut feeling
for you now. Anytime
This always happens. There's a
What Am I missing? This line is so
mispriced. It
ends up going the other way. So Texans
cover the three and a half. What's up
Maddie? Do they win?
Texans cover the three
and a half. Give me
the three all day. It's not
lock of the week it's a gut feeling on a Tuesday.
All right, I'm going to ask one more time.
And then if you want to move on to something else,
do the Texans, you said they cover the three and a half,
do they win?
Texans cover the three and a half.
So you're assuming it's going to be a very close game.
I'm trying to convince myself.
Well, I mean, Jared Goff could throw in three interceptions.
There's no reason why they can't.
He's been like the most accurate quarterback on the planet.
I mean, granted, he's got two good running backs.
The best offensive line of football.
It doesn't give up sacks.
If you try to blitz him, then Amon Ross St. Brown is getting 10-12 catches.
If you don't blitz him, then he's running down the field.
And as is Jameson Williams, Williamson, who's coming back.
Jameson Williams? Jameson.
Jameson Williams.
Again, one of the best patching, past catching tight ends in the league.
San Leporta.
Yeah.
Running backs that can move, Montgomery, not Montgomery.
No, it is David Montgomery, isn't it?
They've got the Texan scoring points.
This is a 49 and a half total.
Oh, I don't think.
the Texans, well,
hmm. I could, you said,
49 and a half?
34.24?
Yeah. That's 10. That's a lion's in the over.
Okay, can I tell a real story here real quick?
So yesterday
we're doing the show and my cousin-in-law
is at Bo Revage.
Cousin-in-law. Cousin-law.
Bo Revoge, that's a casino.
And he texts me and he says,
hey, call your guy, I need some picks.
To bed
at the casino. And I said, well,
I didn't want to tell him this, but I didn't have a guy.
Yeah.
I don't know why he thought I had a guy.
You used to have guys on.
Used to, but I'm not going to reach out.
So I gave him my own picks.
Okay.
I gave him bucks plus the six.
That's Milwaukee Bucks.
Okay.
And I didn't realize shortly after that Yannis was not playing that game.
I gave him Buccaneers plus six and a half and the over.
Oh, so?
I had all three.
Oh, because Buccaneers covered the six because of the overtime.
Yes.
And the Bucks, without Yannis, only lost by two points of the Cavaliers yesterday.
As somebody who has witnessed this with my own eyes, you...
Our lucky some bitch.
When it comes to sports betting and randomly picking picks out of your ass, out of your ass, I will say it.
You hit like 80% of them.
Yeah, it's ridiculous.
If I give it a thought, it's a loss.
If you are walking in a sports book and you see Matt Thomas,
the more research he does, the worse his pick will be.
When Matt does zero research on a pick, and he didn't even know Janus was playing,
that's what I'm talking about.
I've seen it with my own eyes.
He hits parlayes.
He hits picks.
He hits first five innings.
It's honestly, it's incredible.
Like, I'll have Guardians Royals over in the first five.
I don't know who the pitchers are.
You know who's in the lineup.
Who's got a day off or not?
He didn't break up.
He doesn't know the exes.
slug at the lineup? None of that.
And it hits. No. It hits 80%.
So that's the reason why I'm going to
be in Detroit on Saturday for the Rockets.
We're going to get there probably late afternoon.
I'm going right to the MGM.
Yes. And I'm going to bet on a bunch of West Coast
football games and not give two blanks.
Who's playing what it is? Just look at the line.
And probably do based on geography and if I've
been to that airport before. If you try
to give like thoughtful analysis. No chance.
If you make the pick on air, it's got
no chance. If you make it in a book
randomly, it's 80%.
80% minimum.
And it's funny, the picks you get right are the ones you never bet on, you give it to your buddies.
So there you have it.
All right.
Yeah, I think that I'm thinking about this.
I think the lions want to double digits.
Is Matt the new Taylor?
Somebody's.
I mean, I guess, you know what?
I could do walking bets.
That's going to be a jiggle we don't want to see.
That's fair.
713-212-5-7-90.
We'll have more of our gut feelings coming up in just a couple of seconds.
If you would like to get your gut feeling in, I have not checked on Taylor.
She's doing okay?
I think she's back on those Twitter streets again.
You don't lie.
You've checked on her six times since the show started.
Okay, maybe that's accurate, but I didn't want to come across that way.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
We're with you today until 2 o'clock this afternoon here on Sports Talks.

The Matt Thomas show continues
on Sports Talk 790.
Ross and Matt Thomas.
Yo, they got a good feeling.
Lunch timer.
gut feelings continue now on the Matt Thomas show.
All right, 713, 212, 713-1-2-5-790.
If you have any gut feelings, I have the Texans losing by 10 this week.
I'm going to feel better about them going to Dallas, though.
Dallas is imploding.
I ain't scared about the Cowboys.
Dax's not playing.
Look, rough times ahead.
We knew this will be the tough part of the Texan schedule.
So it's just, you know, 6 and 4 still good.
You can win the AMC South.
You probably just have to settle for the fourth best spot in the West in the AFC playoffs.
I wonder if we'll see a friend of the show, Trey Lance, in that game.
You put your name on it a while ago, and so far you're good, that he is a bust and will never have any kind of NFL career.
That is correct.
But he'll probably play before the end of the year.
Oh, and I think, I think Zion wins, speaking of that, I think Zion has been having hamstring issues.
So you might be good there, too.
Is he really?
I think so.
For those that don't know,
I've always,
Ross and I have argued about
Zion Williamson's health.
You said he would never,
ever play 70 games in a season,
and he played 70 last year.
Yeah,
but that was the extra playing game.
So that was a very technical.
You know what?
We've got to check the tape.
If you want that one,
you can have it.
Yeah,
I think he,
yeah,
I think he didn't play.
He's got hamstrings also
don't just go away.
Nope, nope.
Ask Nico Collins.
Especially when you're not in great shape.
Now, Nico's in good shape.
No, apparently Zion lost a lot of weight this offseason,
and he was, like, in the best shape of his life.
Well, there's also a training camp dining table, too.
Well, some people are playing themselves into the shape, like Alper and Schingham.
All right.
Connor, what are your predictions on this week's edition of gut feelings?
Oh, that's right.
We didn't get Connor.
That's rude.
We got to make sure getting involved.
I appreciate.
Thank you.
I'll be over 20 points against the Spurs on Wednesday.
He was held against Wemby.
Yeah, okay.
I got you.
He had 12 and 6 last time they played, so.
Yeah, but he's going to have a little.
a breakout like he did last season.
Well, I would...
About 45 on his head?
Well, I would say this.
I would be impressed with your prediction,
but the problem is last year you played against Wemby three times
and averaged 28 points per game in those three.
Well, there's 45 and one, though.
In one of those games.
What are the others?
Do the math, man.
What was the other two?
I had no idea.
I don't know.
I'm not doing that.
Okay, so I'm sorry.
What did you say, Connor?
20 points.
20 points, I'm going to say.
And then Nico Collins does not play
against the Lions on Sunday.
You know what?
I will join you on that.
It just, it didn't sound like
Demico was overly optimistic.
Wouldn't you want to come out of a press conference on Monday saying,
yeah, we're going to be fine.
DeMico's, I mean, Nico's coming back.
He was very much of the, we're waiting in C mode.
I think Willa Anderson will play, but not Nico.
Okay, okay.
And Dolan Schultz will get his first touchdown of the year.
You are on Team Dalton Shultz.
I love it.
I love it.
Do you play his college football in Missouri or something?
If he says it every week, it's got to come true at some point.
Exactly.
I didn't say it last week, but I said,
his first touchdown of the season
this week against the lines. Okay.
Is there a Houston athlete that you can remember
off the top of your head, either one of you,
that you just kept saying it's going to
break through and be something special and just
never did? Like, your love for Dalton
Schultz is at some point uncomfortable.
You keep predicting these great
things. Is there anybody else that you've, like,
he's going to break through now. I did have
Jake Myers. I did have Drake, you are
the president of the Jake Myers fan club. I give you that.
He broke through for a month.
His may was good. The other
Five months weren't so hot.
And I never really thought he was going to be an all-star.
I just thought he was going to be a good everyday player.
He was a gold globe finalist.
Well, help me.
You know me better than me sometimes.
Give me somebody that I've been pushing that just never ever did much.
Isaiah Hardstein.
Isaiah Hartstein turned out to get a hellaciously big contract with Oklahoma City.
But I wasn't one of those guys on him.
Who have I been super?
Russell Westbrook?
I'm just kidding.
I don't know.
I didn't think John Wall would be that big of a difference.
You're just mostly a hater.
No, not.
I'm a realist.
I can't think of anybody you believe.
didn't, so that's pretty tough. Oh, that's it. Hmm. I can tell you, I can rattle off 50 people you didn't
believe in. That's probably right, 45 times. Wrong five? Still a pretty good percentage.
I'll think, I'll think of somebody that I've, that I've been such a fan of that let me down.
Oh, okay. I'll give you one. Trey cabbage. Will, uh, Will Levis. Oh, Will Levis is good. Thomas
Sports Enterprise. John Ross. Slightly bullish on Will Levis. TSC's biggest hit of Dak Prescott, looking a little
shaky. It is. Although if we're
looking for potential income, he's doing
quite well for himself. But Joel Alt doing very well.
TSE declared him a perennial pro bowler.
That's right. What about that tied in, too?
That was the first round pick. Oh, Brock Bowers.
Brock Bowers. Yeah. Brock Bowers is dominating with the rate is.
Yeah, Thomas Sports & Prizes, generally speaking of a good year.
Last year, not so hot.
I mean, Joe Alt was like the first tackle off the board and went
like fifth. Is that like you? So, yeah. Should I be
bragging about that? Probably not. All right.
But Brock Bowers ago. There was people doubting Brock Bowers, including
myself. Yeah, he's been really good. Last call.
713212-1-2-5-7-90.
If you have any other predictions? I do.
Go ahead. Under 49 and a half,
Texans Lions.
By the way, the latest Super Bowl odds are out
for the winner of the Super Bowl.
Winner. This is just winner.
Okay. Texans went from 14 to 1
to 22 to 1.
Ooh, I might have to get down on them.
To win the thing? Yeah.
It's funny because you know what, you may be right. It may be harder
to win the AFC championship than it will be to win the world's
The Super Bowl.
Well, unless it's the Lions, the Lions.
If it's not the Lions, I feel pretty good.
If it is the Lions, it's going to be tough.
They'll be dogs.
Texans went from 6.5 to 1 on the 29th of October to win the AFC.
They are now 12 to 1 to win the AFC.
They are going, their numbers went way up.
I got them in the off season at 27 to 1.
And you had that ticket.
You know, there's a part of me that's just to win the AFC, right?
No.
Oh, well, you're not catching.
Well, if they make the Super Bowl a hedge,
I stand to win like $700
bucks if they win.
Wait a minute, you put a ticket in
at 27 to 1.
So you bet what, 25 bucks?
Somewhere, a 27 actually.
Okay.
It was the balance left over in the kiosk.
I was at the betting kiosk at the Math Mings
Mortimuk in...
You know what the rime of sportsbook.
At the molding mugget.
There you got much better.
And I was like, you know what?
bleep it.
Maybe I'd had had a few.
I was like, all right, Texas to win the Super Bowl.
So basically, I do this sober when I make these grandiose picks.
You have to have alcohol infusing your body to make that happen.
I told this story, I thought.
Because then the machine ran out of paper.
No, I didn't know this at all.
I had to get the lady to until I was waiting.
I had to go all the way to the Mortsmook.
You don't have to rhyme sports book.
And then the Danager of the Mortsmook.
Oh, my gosh.
And she was, and I brought her over there.
And she's like, what was your bet?
I was like, Texans to win the Super Bowl.
She gave me the biggest side eye.
Like, what?
That, wait a minute.
Look, there are a side eye bet you can make.
The Texans winning the Super Bowl is not a side eye.
This was like in January before they traded for Stefan Diggs as well.
She was like, what?
Well, the only reason why you'd get a side eye is if everybody in America thought
Kansas City was going to repeat as another champion.
So she had to like write down the bet number.
We had to go back.
It was a whole ordeal.
Whole ordeal.
I'll say the only thing about the negative about the sports book there is that the
The tickets are like four and a half pages each.
No wonder they run out of paper.
Those things are, they're like CVS receipts.
Yeah, yeah.
It's ridiculous.
By the way, percentage of time you use a CVS coupon off those receipts.
I'm not going to say zero.
Maybe I've done it once.
Maybe.
I'm going to say about 10% of the time.
Okay.
I'm going to say candy, green cards.
I'm going to say 2%.
Buy one and ask to get one free kind of thing.
It does work out itself.
Yeah.
Occasionally.
Biscuit on 790.
Biscuit.
What is in your gut this week, my man?
Cougar, Matt.
Hey, man.
Cougar, man, I'm going to call it last year early, and I'm going to call it again this year early.
I see back-to-back, Matt.
Back-to-back, big 12 champions for the Cougars.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, I like it.
By the way, did you see how we took care of Jackson State last night?
Who?
And that's why I'm calling you, Matt.
A reason I say back-to-back is because they got more shooters now, and they're still playing defense.
But let me ask you this, Matt.
Who's the third big man in the rotation?
Is that the guy Latham?
Because I'll just see the game.
Cedricleck.
You're talking about Lott?
He's a, yeah, they lost their big guy.
Lott, yeah, a lot.
He doesn't, he's not going to play that much.
But if somebody got to play in that third big man role, who's going to be?
It'd probably be a lot because of the injury to McFarland earlier this week.
So, yeah.
Oh, okay.
And who is, I've seen another guy.
I know you got Miller, who's a shooter, and you got Arson.
He got Sheper, the shooter, and you got Sharp.
It's a shooter.
and you got cries of a shooter.
Who was that other guy that came in last night and hit a bunch of threes?
Well, I didn't see the game because I was calling the Rockets,
but you're talking about Uzin?
He's the new point guard.
He's the replacement for Jamal's shit.
Oh, okay, Uzin. Yeah, he's good.
And he transferred from where?
He is a transfer.
Oh, you're putting me on the spot.
This is always so hard with college basketball.
Oh, God.
Oklahoma.
Oklahoma, there it is.
Thank you, Ross.
Okay, okay, okay.
But yeah, I see my Cougars, man.
Matt, back to back.
Big 12 chance.
You know what?
You know what?
I am...
Thank you for the call.
This actually works good this time.
I feel about the Cougars like Texans fans feel about the Texans.
Winning the Big 12 is cool and everything.
Yes.
I want bigger and better things.
I want to go to the Final Four.
And it works out perfectly because this year's final four is in San Antonio.
Ooh.
You going to go?
It depends on my rocket schedule.
Okay.
But if I can go, I'll try to go.
I'm good.
I'm glad you haven't brought up the Longhorns loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes last night.
That's not a terrible loss.
Yeah, they're one and a half point favors.
By the way, keep an eye on five-star freshman Trey Johnson.
He had 29 points shot 5 of 11 from three on the Longhorns.
Five-star scoring wing, 29 points in his debut as a true freshman.
Is that a VSE?
Is that a VSE pick right there?
It might have to be.
He's looking good.
He's looking smooth with it.
All right, I got you.
All right.
Up next, let's get to the NFL Rewan, a Tuesday staple of the show.
Normally it's between 12 and 3.
Now we're in the 10 to 2 spots, so we'll have.
of the Ross's NFL Rewan.
Well, he'll give you complete details of what happened last night
between Tampa Bay and Kansas City
and anything interesting in the world of the National Football League.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We are now 10 to 2 weekdays here on Sports Talk 790

All right, every Tuesday here, we have the new Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We're on 10 to 2 starting today.
And again, those are just joining us.
We'll miss Stan normally in this spot.
We were not told of the changes here at 7-9 until yesterday after the show.
So your surprise as much as our surprise.
A lot of people are asking on Twitter when the strippers are going to wake up Friday, 12 noon, they still wake up.
And I almost feel like we're going to do our, do we want to do our Friday open at 12 noon there too, or do you want to do...
Oh, let's make, we've got to make Connor do it twice, right?
Yeah, we're going to do it at 10 and noon.
At 10 and, well, at noon you're doing...
Oh, the news at noon.
Well, you could do...
You can do one.
One.
Let's do it every hour.
I love it.
It is such a funny thing.
And it gets to keep my feet up and hang out.
They call you Mr. 40 hours around here.
Hey, hey now.
We got a four-hour show now.
Any extra minutes off, I can get all this.
All right.
Time now for the NFL Rewind and is presented to you by, at this point, no one.
If you'd like to sponsor it, it can be yours.
Today's sales executive of the day.
We'll give it to Tanner Murphy.
She's fresh off of her struck throat.
She feels a lot better now.
And she can be willing to take your phone calls at 713-212-8,000.
Ask for Taylor and say, hey, I want to sponsor the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Okay.
Sounds great.
Time now for the NFL Rewind.
Yes, Matthew.
Well, we'll go before we get to Sunday.
We'll get to Monday.
And what happened last night with the Chiefs and the Buccaneers?
Handoff, Kareem Hunt, right side, Perry.
He is.
Give it time.
Touchdown.
Kansas City.
It's a walk-off touchdown by Kareem Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs stay undefeated at 8-0.
The only National Football League.
14 straight wins for the Chiefs Kingdom.
That's an all-time Kansas City record and seventh in national football league history.
That call just kept going.
But the Chiefs get the victory walk off in overtime, Matthew.
The Buccaneers come back late to tie it at 23.
but they kicked the extra point.
The entire nation was waiting for Todd Bowles to go for two in that situation.
He did not.
Here's what he had to say about it.
Very minor.
We wanted to get to overtime with the wet conditions on the field.
We felt like we had to go in overtime instead of to go for two.
So we had our shots.
You know, we lost the game.
Agree or disagree with Todd Bowles' decision to not go for it on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs
and play for overtime.
You know me,
I go conservative
in this particular situation.
I will go for the time.
That's just me.
Sorry.
You were the Ronald Reagan of going for it.
My goodness.
The Ronald Reagan for it.
All right.
Anyways.
Thank you, Matt, for that.
Let's keep it going in the AFC.
A clash of Titans in the AFC East.
The Buffalo Bills.
Eke won out against the Miami Dolphins.
Waddle in pursuit his Rousseau.
And he wrested.
He drops him up and drops him at the six-yard line.
Daddy Longlegs gets all over Jaylen Waddle and drops him at the six, and that'll do it.
The Bills, in inspiring fashion, went 30 to 27 and improved to 7 and 2 on the season.
Buffalo Bills go to 7 and 2.
A couple of angles on this one.
First of all, to a tongue of Aloha.
Congratulations.
He made it through another game.
He didn't get a concussion.
I watched some of that on the red zone on Sunday.
Just like you, having to watch Tua do anything scares the bejes out of me.
I don't want to think about it, but you know what I'm thinking about.
Yes.
So you're thinking about him getting hurt again.
And how about this, Matt, for a bad beat.
If you bet on the Tua yards prop, it was 243 and a half yards.
Which is a very small group people that are doing this.
He was at 252.
but on that last lateral play,
Jalen Waddle catches the ball.
He runs back 21 yards,
and now Tua at 231,
if you bet that prop, you took an owl.
But again, the number of people in this world
that bet the Tua Taga Lolo would probably...
I mean, there could be able to have it.
Underdog or...
That's actually true.
Whatever else type of pitch.
I was thinking just book only.
If you went to Underdog, that's going to certainly get you.
So, yeah, that's probably a lot more than I would thought.
But still not a huge play, though.
So dolphins down to 2-6, 2-and-6 on the season.
Matt, neutral field this week.
Bill's Texans, who are you taking?
Bill's Texans on a neutral?
What made you think of that?
I'm just asking.
Thinking about AFC pecking order?
Bills.
I don't think Josh Allen can have that bad of a game a second time in one year.
Although he was slow to get going last week.
I'll say this.
But he had epically bad numbers.
against the Texas. Now, again, that may be cradded
to the Texas defense, or
that maybe was just Josh Allen not being able to throw the ball
accurately. Yeah. I think you're right. I would go with the bills
right now. They're playing a lot better football. And even though you get the
head-to-head win, and that's important, you're a game
behind them now in the AFC. Let's go to the NFC.
By the way, can we stay on the AFC for one second?
Yes. If the playoffs were to start today,
let me give you the matchups. You ready?
Yes. Kansas City at 8-0 would have
have the buy. It's really a buy
because it really is a tournament.
You would then have Denver at Buffalo, the Chargers at Pittsburgh.
Yes.
Baltimore at Houston.
Just rest on that for a second.
Well, it's funny you bought that up because I was going to go to the NFC,
but I do have this on the docket.
Lamar takes a snap, rolls out, throws.
Pat Ricard, touchdown.
The Ravens destroy the Bronx.
Donkoes.
Eviscerate the bills,
win a shootout against the Bengals.
They take care of business against commanders,
but they've also lost the Browns.
They've got a bad loss of the Raiders.
They lost to the Chiefs in the opening.
They do have the Bengals on a Thursday night, Matt.
But who are the real Baltimore Ravens?
Baltimore Ravens are going to win that NFC North.
Pittsburgh's going to go in as a walled card probably,
which then means it'll be Pittsburgh against Houston in Houston.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Texans, I would pick the Texans to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at home.
TJ Watt?
Doesn't matter.
It's a little story game.
Cam Hayward says hello.
And, and.
Highman says hello.
Kami Fairbair will not hit us an upright this week or in that playoff game.
No.
That's true.
I think the Texans lose a Baltimore playoff home game.
They beat Pittsburgh at energy.
Well, I mean, Russell Wilson's been playing great.
Football.
They were on a buy last week.
That phrasing has not been said in about five years.
I know.
I ain't scared.
I understand.
I'm not.
Oh, okay.
This is very, this is a rare change of a changing of the guard.
I'm scared.
I know you are.
I know you are.
I'm sorry to everybody in the EFC.
Are you scared of Baltimore coming here?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So, I mean, you can't be scared of everybody.
Kaleel Mack and Joey Boso on the Chargers.
Yes, I'm scared of them.
The Denver Broncos defense.
Have you seen this Texans front?
But don't worry.
Dermico Ryans and Nick Casario love their offensive line.
They're not going to make any moves.
Well, by the 3 o'clock deadline today.
Unfortunately, that is probably going to happen.
I said, who did I say?
Alonzo Highsmith, I met Alex Highsmith.
Alex Highsmith, T.J. Watt,
Cam Hayward would feast on this offensive event.
Lastly, on the NFC side.
Yes.
How about the 7 and 2, Washington Commanders?
Jake, loads one up.
Towards the Edzo, towards McClorn.
He catches it.
Friend. Seven and two.
Atop the NFC East, ahead of the Eagles, ahead of the Cowboys.
Contender status?
Washington Commanders?
Or pretender status in the NFC?
I think Philadelphia is better than there.
They're obviously not better than the Lions.
Okay.
Commanders or Vikings.
Vikings by a smidge.
I think it goes Detroit 1, Philadelphia 2, Minnesota 3, Washington 4.
Atlanta is leading the south.
Arizona's leading the west.
Arizona 5, Green Bay 6, Arizona 7.
San Francisco you left up.
I don't know.
They're 4 and 4.
and Arizona got another big winning over the weekend.
They also should be getting Christian McCaffrey back this week.
Yeah, you're right.
The Niners.
I'll take out the Cardinals and put the Niners in instead.
NFC is starting to get interesting.
It is still better, but NFC is getting interesting.
All right.
And that's your NFL rewind.
All right.
New segment starts today, and we'll do it every day.
We'll add production value to it eventually.
But again, we were literally in transition mode here.
The news at noon will be at noon, where Ross will find headlines the day,
both sports and non-sports related, and we'll get to those.

Now on Sports Talk 790.
1149 here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We are with you now 10 o'clock until 2.
We'll have a new feature today, and it's just called the News at noon.
It's nothing crazy.
It's just opportunity to run through the headlines today from either what happened last night.
we could play highlights of Astros games.
We could play highlights of Rockets games.
You know, the Rockets announcer is pretty good,
so you want to play those as often as you possibly can.
Craig does a great job.
I mean, he's spectacular.
Fantastic.
Can't agree more.
I was thinking the radio that you hear on this radio station.
Oh, yeah.
He's fine.
He's all right.
So, well, it gives us a chance to kind of just reset the show.
What's going on?
What's happening?
And we'll call it the news at noon.
Nothing crazy.
Okay.
And you're going to find one offbeat news item for me to comment.
Now, please make sure it's nothing involving the election today.
Okay.
All right.
I was looking at a tweet earlier today.
Charles Barker was a guest in the Dan Patrick show.
And they were, you know, Charles has been very outspoken about today's athlete.
And a lot of old school players have done that.
And he says there are two things that are a large part of the reason why the NBA continues to have issues with lower viewership.
And the ratings so far, remember, very early sample size.
Yes.
very, very poor.
Okay.
I think it'll get better.
I always think the NBA numbers this time of year are low because you've got college football, pro football.
You started college basketball yesterday.
Not that that would do a huge dent into it, but you're fresh up the World Series.
And I just think ultimately college and pro football just dominate sports more than any of the other sports combined.
He says there are two problems.
Number one problem is you've got a league that is heavily focused on three-point shooting.
And that the low block game is.
is just not part of the offense anymore.
I've never, I can see, I mean,
obviously I'm in the minority,
and I don't mind three-point shooting,
but I think I'm in a minority.
I think there is a bit of an issue
as to where a lot of times
it boils, every game simply boils down to which team made their threes,
that team wins.
And if that's not saying you're personally
are dumbing it down, but that could be a dumbed down statement
of what the NBA is all about,
I can get that.
I don't bother me because the Rockets were down 31 points of Golden State on Saturday night.
Now, they used the three ball to their advantage.
They started one for 10 for three.
They did.
And the Warriors were 8 for 12 in the first quarter, so they were down huge.
But they also used their steals and defense and fast break opportunities to get back in the game, not relying exclusively on the three.
Now, Jabari had a few.
But point being is that the three is the great equalizer.
No game is like in an NBA game in 1984.
If you're down 31 in the first half,
There's no chance, no way you're getting back.
So to me, it doesn't bother me.
But the second issue you brought up was the most important thing is the load management.
And you've got salaries rising.
I mean, unbelievable, $70, $80, $90 million of your players that are not going to be playing back to backs.
And Charles was asked about, and I'm going to paraphrasing here, how do you control load management?
You know what his answer was?
You play three to four times a week.
Suck it up, Sally.
Yes.
suck it up.
And if it means you don't practice during the week, if you don't go to pregame shootarounds,
if you take days off in between, it says most NBA teams play three times a week.
There aren't going to be sometimes you play four.
But the average team plays three times a week.
If you can't play three times a week and you are expecting to make $85, $90 million,
you're going to see a drop in ticket sales.
And you are going to ultimately see a drop in ratings of broadcast games of which
at least half of them next year will be on streaming.
you if you've got the Lakers playing the Bucks and Yannis and LeBron both are not playing because of load management.
And that game's on Amazon.
There ain't no way in the world.
And the average human beings are going to go try to find Amazon video broadcast of an NBA game that doesn't feature LeBron and Janus.
Well, is Janice load managing?
Why is he missing?
Is that why he's missing?
No, I'm using an example.
I don't know.
I don't know.
So they did try to, and so we know what the problem is.
The question becomes, what's the solution?
Charles says there's no solution except you play.
I think the NBA did a good thing.
They made, what is it, 65 games you have to play now to be eligible for end of the season awards?
So if you want first team, second, third team, all NBA.
But if you've already got the huge contract, that's moot.
I think a lot of these players, I think it matters as far as MVP's and all that type of stuff.
Then what I want to see is I want to see a direct correlation to that.
I want to say, I want to hear an athlete say, Rossi, that I've got to get the 68 games because I think
I'm worthy of being all first team. We're all second team.
And I also, I'm curious, I guess we need to go case by case basis of who is load managing.
If it's, first of all, LeBron James doesn't want to load manage. It's the trainers and the organization telling him he has to.
He or his argument is like, I'm as healthy as any 22 year old out of there, but the way that I take care of myself.
You're accurate, what you just said, but he's the face of LeBron.
No one's going to go, well, LeBron, we believe you. We're sorry that you've got trainers.
are trying to treat you with kid gloves here.
Yeah, but you are your own grown ass man.
But if they inactivate him, there's nothing he can do.
LeBron's run, is a general manager that team.
LeBron wants to play, LeBron's going to play.
He wants, I mean, I saw the documentary on Netflix or like there was, he's like, he's
arguing with the trainers.
He wants to play.
So I, he's also 39 years old turning forward.
Maybe he's a poor example.
So that's what I'm saying.
So who is load managing?
I mean, Joel Embededed his load manager.
He's got a million knee injuries lately.
So that feels like...
Okay, then you know what?
Then if that's the case, you can't go in and ask the NBA to compensate you for all these obnoxious contracts if you can't give 70 to 75 games.
Yeah, Kauai Leonard has been load managing.
He's got like degenerative knee issues that affect him every single year.
Like Stephen Adams' load managers right now for the Rockets.
Stephen Adams is a backup center and a guy's been the league for 11, 12 years, ain't going to break the bank.
I can totally get that.
And nobody's buying, well, unless you're from New Zealand, literally.
I mean, New Zealand's got a strong contingent.
Maybe you're right.
You're right about that.
You're not buying tickets to see.
But it's interesting, the first time I've seen an athlete, ex-athlet, obviously, with Charles, say, there is no answer.
You want to be a top 10 compensated player, top 15, top 20.
You've got to play.
Now, the only player that I can remember that I've covered called Games for that was making obscene amounts of money
and yet wanted to play all the time,
and I appreciated that was James Hardin.
A lot of things you could criticize James for.
James always wanted to play.
And James would be questionable going into games,
and James would go out there and warm up
before the start of the games, and he would go.
So for all the criticism that Hardin received
here in Houston, obviously,
the ability to want to play,
I mean, there were just nights that he said,
nah, I'm going to go. I don't want to go, but I'm going to go.
Yeah. And I think that's what Charles Barkley is saying,
and sometimes you don't want to do it.
You've got to do it if you want to be in that super,
super high echelon salary.
So I guess the question is,
Embed and Kauai would be the two greatest examples right now
of guys that are load managing
that are the superstar, super highly competent players
that probably could play, but are not.
And they've been hurt every playoffs, it seems like.
Both of those.
So basically, you have chronic leg issues.
So at first of the point, you could load manage,
it doesn't pay off in April.
Yeah.
I mean, the NBA sent a report.
They sent a report to all the teams.
The NBA's trying.
Adam Silver, they made the player participation policy where they're trying to get players to play.
And they also sent, they had doctors, they commissioned a report.
And these doctors sent this report to the teams saying, load management, we can't say for a fact that it helps.
But we also can't say that it hurts, but it doesn't help.
Yeah.
They're finding that the injury frequency is about the same.
Load management or not.
Yeah.
How many players are we legitimately worried about this?
Yeah, I think it's not as many as we think.
Really?
But it's just a super...
Jason Tatum's not load managing.
Nickle Yokic is not load managing.
Jalen Greene, nobody in the Rockets is load management with Stephen Adams.
No, he's the only one.
Are they...
Is Shea Gilges Alexander?
Like, I'm trying to think a star player.
Luca Donchich is not load managing.
He just can play managers a lot.
It feels like 90, 95% of star players.
Donovan Mitchell's not load managing.
Jailin Brown.
mean yeah so maybe he's just speaking in wide maybe he's you know what he's doing he's basically pointing
on koi is what he's yeah he's got he's got degenerative knee issues and he's hurt all the time
so in that particular case then it's up to the teams to say right we love you but we can't pay you
obnoxious amounts of cash for you not to play the news at noon is next 1158 on sports talk 790
launch timers this is the matt thomas show
Call all four, what's happening, luncht timers.
Good afternoon to you.
And welcome to hour number three of four of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
All right, this is our...
This is interesting.
I don't know if I like this.
This is too upbeat and cheery.
Oh, what do you want? Something sad?
Yeah.
Why? Come on.
It feels like you're going to toss to me for the weather at, eh?
79 degrees is going to be partly cloudy.
Stay out there, folks.
And election day, stay in the line.
Make sure you take your up.
At 25% she had to raid in the center of the city.
Connor, you like this theme song for the news at noon?
I don't think it's bad.
I mean, it's two-thirds vote.
A majority here, so if...
It's the one I chose, so, I mean, if you don't like...
It's the mad time of shows right now.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, it's two-thirds.
He says yes.
You say yes. We'll keep it then.
We can still try and improve.
If you find something better...
Yeah, we'll try and find different things.
We'll try another one...
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow.
Yeah, we got...
Look, we just figured out we're doing this show 23 hours ago,
So trust me, we had no idea we were having a four-hour show until after the show yesterday.
So we're trying to this.
But a new feature of the show every day at noon is we want to recap what we saw from last night.
Things we talked about on the show.
So we present to you the news at noon.
Okay.
I'm really going to try not to do a TV guy voice.
That's part of the challenge on this.
Yeah, it's part of the challenge here, but...
Oh, no.
Okay.
I'm sorry.
Okay.
So some trades made in the NFL, Matt.
Unfortunately, not in Houston.
and I'll run them down for you.
Go for it. With Zach Moss, Houston
Toro, down with his injury,
the bingles have traded for
Khalil Herbert.
That's a sixth, oh, excuse me,
he was a sixth round pick.
I don't know what the compensation exactly was
on that one, but we'll skip.
Khalil Herbert is now going to be a
Cincinnati bingle. This is bad
for the Texans. Zadaria Smith,
good edge rusher for the Cleveland Browns,
is now a Detroit line.
And he'll be in uniform, I'm sure, for Sunday
game down at NRG Stadium. That's the bad news.
Yes, that is the bad news. I do
not have compensation on that one in the story that I
have either, but this is the one that's funny to me. Cowboys
trading a fourth rounder,
getting back a seventh, and Jonathan Mingo,
I mean, they're losing games,
their quarterback is possibly going to go on IR with that
hamstring injury, and they trade for
Jonathan Mingo.
And they give away
more compensation than they got in the Amari Cooper trade a couple of years ago.
I'm asking a question.
I mean, this in all sincerity, why is everybody else making moves and the Texans can't do it?
Because all teams are probably strapped financially with the salary cap.
The Texans actually have much more lower-round capital than other teams do.
And now that's a great question, Matt.
And it's not that we're not trying to make deals.
It's about finding the right deal for us and talk a lot of teams.
and it's about compensation, it's about contracts, it's about salary cap,
and it's also about fit with the team.
So a lot of factors in play, and the bottom line is we do believe in the guys that we do have in the building.
I feel like we got a lot of good players on this team that we have who can step in in the place of Kenyon Green.
So do we want to improve the team?
Yes, do we want to do it at a great cost?
No, so we have to tow that line and find the right deal that makes sense for us.
the three previous years for the Texans under general manager Nick Casario,
they've only made one deadline deal.
If you get this, it's a running back.
And the Texans didn't get a player, they gave up a player.
I don't remember.
Mark Ingram goes back to the Saints.
Yeah, I remember that.
Do you say it?
But I wouldn't have got that.
Okay.
So teams are making deals.
What time is the deadline, Matt?
Do we have a clock on?
3 p.m.
We will not be on air, as I was about to say.
Well, we're almost.
You know, this song sounds better than I thought.
It'll fall in the laps of Adam and Adam.
I mean, we're used to that.
That's fine.
Okay, so no deals made there.
Now, let's keep it moving on the news at noon.
Yeah.
Jason Kelsey, if remember Matt,
did you end up seeing the video of him smashing the guy's phone
and then picking it up as he was calling his brother a gay slur
that starts with an F for dating Taylor Swift,
which doesn't make any sense.
in the first place. I think they're very heterosexual.
Jason Kelsey on Monday night football, issuing an apology.
I'm not happy with anything that took place.
I'm not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate,
and I just don't think that that's a productive thing.
I really don't. I don't think that, you know, it leads to discourse,
and it's the right way to go about things.
And in that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn't have.
So I think the bottom line is
I want to live my life
I try to live my life by the golden rule
That's what I've always been taught
I try to treat people with common decency
And respect and I'm going to keep doing that
Moving forward even though this past
Even though I fell short this week
Good for him
Soft
Everybody was rooting for Jason Kelsey when that happened
And he was living by the golden rule
That guy he was treating that guy
The way he was treating him
So what is the gold
and rule technically.
Treat others how you want to be treated.
And I think he's saying that I don't want to condone violence and words with other forms of
violence and words.
Is this Jason Kelsey saying this or was he pushed that way by Disney executives?
He was absolutely 100% pushed by ESPN.
You don't want a network employee throwing down phones or doing anything except smiling pretty
on camera and saying funny things.
I would agree with that, but also some punk kid calling your brother a slur for dating the most
famous woman in the planet
is ridiculous behavior
and I'm sick of these kids going
over the line. It'd be like people
taking shots at me on Twitter and me
responding. Oh wait a minute
dude. Yeah, you're matching their energy.
If you polled a thousand
people, how many were upset with what Jason
Kelsey did? It should be zero.
Yeah. But
I don't know. All right.
Moving along with the news
at noon. Big win
last out of TOTA Center. Oh, oh, you just
Look, Matt is shoving this box score in my face because he wants his own highlights.
No, I'm not asking for highlights.
No, I don't want any highlights.
No, no, no, no, no.
Tari sets the screen, green doesn't take it.
Right side angle.
Trying to get by Brunston.
Jalen, contested three.
It is up, and it's good.
Two triples in the fourth quarter.
The only threes, he's got all night long, and it couldn't have come in a better time.
Rockets 105, Knicks 97.
You didn't have to play that.
That was a good call.
You didn't have to play.
It was good.
I just want to say it.
The news and noon doesn't have to require.
Matt just wants his,
Matt wants his own calls after every game and news and new.
I'm figuring out the rules here.
Do you think of Robert Ford did a show he would want his own calls?
I don't know.
I'll probably not.
I'll ask him because I'm going to see him.
He's a big Knicks fan.
He'm not happy last night.
Actually, it's the new contract for the show.
We have to play a Matt highlight every segment.
He's demanded it.
And that's just how we have to all here.
I mean, that isn't sounding a terrible situation.
Okay, 109 to 97, the Rockets get the victory.
Men, Thompson defense, great.
Alperin Shingoon, 25 and 14,
and the Rockets improved to four and three on the year.
And San Antonio coming in on Wednesday,
then a very difficult matchup with Oklahoma City on Friday,
and then a piece of cake against the Troy on Sunday afternoon.
It would be strange.
Detroit, Houston play each other in two sports in the same day.
Wow. Incredible.
And they will go one-in-one.
Two and O.
No, I'm just kidding.
I'm okay with that.
Let me tell you, you beat Detroit with the way they've been playing the last month and a half.
Actually, this entire season, that would be 10 times more impressive than beating Buffalo.
Three point dogs in night games.
Generally, pretty good play.
But I'm also scared.
Do road teams typically went on Sunday nights?
Not a lot.
Not a lot.
I mean, hell, the Colts were like up at the half against the,
Vikings on Sunday, but then the
Colts, Joe Flacco looked like he was 53.
Well, also, I mean, that Vikings defense
is incredible. And, well,
Joe Flacco did probably about as good as
Anthony Richardson would have. They lost that game.
Lastly, on the news at noon. That's it.
Okay. Well, unless you want,
I had one more thing, if you really want to get to it.
Please, why not? Garrett Cole
opted out of his deal. Yes.
Then the Yankees would have to attack on
another year of his contract to keep him,
and then somehow they're staying
together on the original deal that he
opted out of. So four
years, $144 million for
Pete's sake left on
Garrett Cole. Hey, we try to reach out to Gary Cole
to congratulate him on his latest deal. I think he's sick
of talking to you. He gets very upset.
He had back-to-back appearances on this show and he was
none too pleased about it.
And that's the news at noon.
Yes. Now, sometimes when Ross, we
had more time for this because... I'll give you a wacky
story next time. I'm sorry.
And it can be from Florida, by the way. I did find one actually. Do you want it real quick?
Yeah, go ahead. A woman is going viral
for explaining her date with a 45-year-old
who left $100 on the table and walked out
after she ordered lamb chops, oysters, and crab-fried rice
while he only ordered a drink.
How did you find that story?
Mars Stool Mortz.
Okay.
They've always got...
Selechy stuff, yeah.
Was this like Baters? And guess what, I clicked.
What? Was it a first date?
Yes.
I'm walking out.
She's ordering oysters.
and crab fried rice and the lamb chops.
That's a little pricey.
Don't you typically now, Connor,
you're single among us group here.
You try to order light on your first date, right?
You don't try to show off what you can eat or that, right?
Yeah, because I know I'm paying.
I'm going to order light.
No, no, no, no.
I wouldn't worry about the cost.
I'd be worrying about ordering like a,
like if I ordered a big prime rib,
she's like, this guy's a pig.
Like when I was dating when I was fat,
I was ordered salads.
And they were look at me,
go away. I mean, you're the one ordering double big Macs when you leave the date, so.
My rule on first dates is you don't eat anything with your hands.
Oh.
This guy, look at this guy.
Now, you eat the double big Mac before Matt.
That way you're already kind of, you're not super hungry for that meal so you don't pig out.
Oh, so you're saying like eat it five o'clock for the seven o'clock date?
Yeah, if you got a seven o'clock day, at least some kind of snack.
Okay.
I'm not saying gorge yourself because you're going to throw up in the middle of the meal.
Yeah.
All right.
That would be my tip.
That's the news at noon.
Thank you.
I kind of like a segment.
And the music kind of grew on me, by the way.
$159 tab, and the guy left her $100.
He only had a $16 old-fashioned.
Left her $100 and pieced out.
That's generous.
Yeah, I would just love.
So there's no second date, I'm assuming, at this point.
No.
All right.
When we return, are you concerned that we're hearing no buzz about Texans making a trade
two hours and 44 minutes away from the trade deadline?

This is the Matt Thomas Show.
1220. It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We are now with you every day between 10 and 2 o'clock.
We had a station change.
Unfortunately, we are going to miss our man's staying North Fleet tremendously.
He is no longer with the station.
We had to move all the shows around a little bit.
Unfortunately, our parent company did a reduction in workforce.
nationwide.
Which, yeah.
Luckily for us,
didn't hit Houston as hard as hit at other areas.
There are a lot of shows in a lot of different cities,
both in the music dial on the FM side,
a AM side that were cut, released,
a lot of longtime employees.
A lot of sports nationwide as well.
A lot of sports.
So, feel terrible.
And as I've told,
and we mentioned it's 10 o'clock today
worth repeating one more time.
We really enjoyed working with Stan.
He was so fun.
We love to bust each other's Cajonis.
Chops.
Chops.
That's the PG-friendly version.
and I'll give him this and I'll say this and I hope Stan's listening.
It is not easy and I've done this in two different places.
It is not easy to go to a market in which you do not know.
Now Stan lived here for a while many, many moons ago but was never in the media business.
It is not easy to go and do a radio show in a market that you're not from and you didn't grow up with.
I did it in Salt Lake City for a couple of years.
I did it Minneapolis for three years and then shows come back to Houston in 2010.
to get ingrained with a community that lives and breathes the local sports teams when you're not from it, it's very difficult and takes a lot of time.
But stand to his credit, 100% went full throttle into learning as much as he did about the local teams as he could.
Doesn't mean you have to agree with every one of his takes.
Doesn't mean that maybe he and I would argue about a variety of things he would say.
But that man put in the time.
there are so many
lazy
non-talented
mailing in people
in our industry
that didn't put the time
into becoming a good radio host
and Stan did that
so Stan if you're listening
we still have our bet
number two
you'll be missed
number three you know I know people
across this country
have been very fortunate to be in this business
a long period of time
and he knows that he can find me
anytime he wants to
and I can put any recommendations
I can in
and he will be missed.
And like I said, we did not know of this change until we got off the air yesterday.
In fact, the boys in front of us and behind us knew of it,
but we're told by our boss is not the same anything to us until we spoke with him.
So when we heard about the decision in the reduction in workforce by the parent company,
that things are going to be all moved around, we were literally the last ones to know.
So, Stan, we're going to miss you, and hopefully you will get the back in front of a microphone
in the not too distant future.
perfectly said.
Good.
No notes.
I back everything Matt just said.
There you go.
713212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Believe it or not, today coming up at 150.
That's going to be hard.
And again, a lot of our funny...
At what time?
150.
Oh.
Okay.
Which is going to throw the 250 cart off
because there are a lot of people
that were just tuning in for that.
Oh, the prize whores are going to be so shocked when they hear Adam and Adam.
They're not going to know what to do.
They're going to be calling Dan like, yeah, I'm calling for believe it or not.
They did what?
Now? Huh. Okay.
They're going to have to readjust their clocks.
They're going to be on Mountain Time.
Let's talk to some people. Let's say hi to Travis and Katie.
Then we'll go back to our question, which I brought up about,
are you as a Texan fan concerned that you're not hearing the trade winds of blowing?
Speaking of that, we do have a trade in the NFL real quick.
Go ahead.
Mike Williams.
Receiver?
Receiver.
Yeah.
Traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers from the New York Jets.
it's a fifth round pick to the Jets.
Okay, so the Steelers are trying to get better
because they think they're going to make a playoff push.
Yeah.
They needed W.R. 2 with George Pickens is good, but
after that's a fan Jefferson.
But Pickens is even largely inconsistent, too.
Pickens has been good since he got a better quarterback.
That's true.
And since he's not walking off the field.
Travis and Katie on 790. Hi, Travis.
Hey, how are you doing, Matt?
Good.
Longtime listener.
First time caller.
How's it going over there?
Sorry to hear about all that stuff.
I understand.
Thank you.
Anyways, so the Dallas Cowboys made a trade today for Jonathan Mingo,
and I'm pretty upset about it.
You know, I don't understand why they would give up a fourth rounder
for such a diminishing return.
But I had a question for you guys personally.
Do you guys think that Jerry Jones read Jonathan Mingo and thought it was that Jonathan Mandingo?
I'll hang up and listen.
Was that Trey?
I don't know, but there's always a key asset part of the show.
My ears perked up the start of that.
I was like, yeah, when you go to a long time, first time, Trey, I was wondering in the middle of that if it was Trey.
So I'm not sure if it was.
If it was, Trey, shout out to Trey.
But no, I don't think he was trading for a male porn star.
Although probably, I don't know.
Jerry Jones is a fan, I don't know.
Yeah, what he does in his own world.
I'm not here to judge.
I'm texting him right now.
Yeah, if that was Trey, he was an apology.
We've only promoted his comedy career.
By the way, how about Kill Tony going up in that Trump rally
and nobody knowing who killed Tony is?
I love Kill Tony.
Well, what happened?
So Kill Tony was up at the President Trump rally.
Why?
Because he was like a comedian and he brought up some jokes, unfortunately, about Puerto Rico.
And he was being what he was a roaster, taking jabs and everybody.
Why is he at a political rally?
That's my, I don't know.
I don't know what they think about it.
But nobody knew who he was.
So they just keep calling him the comedian that was so out of touch and wrong.
And I was like, that's Kill Tony.
That's what Kiltony does.
Trump didn't even.
know who kill Tony was then why did he have him up there it wasn't his call he says well whose call
was it i don't know somebody said hey let's bring up a to let's bring up a roaster who insults everybody's
nationality and ethnicity as a joke and again if you go to a kill Tony event you know that
kiltony's going to make fun of people it was just an odd situation hmm all right sorry about that
i just was like our boy our guy tray has been on uh kill Tony a few times so yeah i don't know he's he's
claiming it wasn't him or he says he just gave me a what maybe it wasn't he's in austin i don't know
what do you've called the show on that maybe who knows he is a cowboys fan all right uh so to recap
quickly here and we got oh we get quick time out we got one minute here um are we nervous of the texans
are going to sit back and are we okay are we going to be okay because you are battle red ross i'm not battle red
matt okay so what's the question my question is how concerned are you that they're going to stand pat
and that are they doing this because they don't want to give up draft commodity?
They don't think there's legitimately anybody out there,
or they think that this is the best we can possibly get.
And Nick, we trust.
He's made one trade since the deadline,
and it was trading Mark Ingram to New Orleans.
He's never acquired anybody at the deadline.
You're nervous, Nellie.
I can see it.
I would like a receiver.
I would like a lineman.
You're nervous.
But Kenyon Green out.
the worst guard in football.
So they're going to be better, I think.
So Jared Patterson is supposed to fix all this?
Or Kendrick Green? Are you sure?
You feel confident?
Kendra Green or Jared Patterson will be better.
Okay.
Am I excited about it?
No.
Am I like, let's go!
Jared Patterson for life!
First team all pro loading!
No.
Okay.
I would rather have seen a receiver, really.
Adam Thielen's available if you want him.
Oh, 33-year-old Adam.
I'm feeling who's been hurt all year.
Good hands.
Yeah.
And plays in the slot.
Better than matching.
Well, yeah.
Yeah.
By the way, I broke my phone yesterday.
I cannot get rid of the, I cannot turn my phone on silence.
Were you filming Jason Kelsey?
No.
How did you get your phone broken?
It fell and I just can't.
Oh, it fell.
Can you fix it during the break?
You fell or you dropped it.
I dropped it.
Okay.
See, that's what my dad used to do to me.
Oh, okay.
Okay. It broke or you broke it?
Yes.
Well, I broke it.
All right.

All right.
So ESPN has their projections of the free agents.
Oh, can I say one more quick trade that happened in the NFL that didn't involve the Texas?
Go ahead, go ahead.
Marshawn Latimore, cornerback, four-time pro bowler, traded to the Washington Commanders,
New Orleans getting a third round pick and a fourth round pick.
Is Gordi okay on this?
Are we sure he's all right?
I don't think he's going to be great.
third and fourth
to the Saints
Washington gets Marshawn
Latimore and a fifth
Okay
So again
These are deals involving players
We recognize
Now they could be
Passer Primer getting there
But at least these
These contending teams
Laddmore's 28
He's still good
Yeah I mean
They're contending teams
That want to get better
Third and fourth
Is pretty Steve
Russ
I'm gonna make a
I'm gonna say a little
A little late gut feeling right now
Tomorrow people are gonna call this show
And aren't gonna be unhappy
that the Texans didn't do anything.
That's fine.
Fans don't run the team.
But we've seen in baseball locker rooms,
clubhouses, when teams don't make trades,
there's a small segment and say,
all right, it's us against the world, let's go.
Yeah.
And there's also a large segment that says,
man, we ain't good enough.
I don't know what this general manager's not doing here.
CJ Strout, if we can call CJ right now.
Okay.
He wants an additional alignment.
He wants an additional slot receiver, too.
I'm sure he would want both.
or no, outside receiver.
No, I'm thinking about Theol's what I'm thinking about.
Okay.
You got Theelin on the mind.
What, you want, Mike Williams?
See, I don't, not really.
Mike Williams is washed.
As I'm saying, the guy,
and the reason I'm bringing up Theilin's name
is because he's the name that I see that I think can come in
and help out right away.
You got to turn your ringer down.
No, I can't.
No, I can't.
The phone is broken.
I'm going to start texting you throughout the show now.
No, do not text me during the show.
I'm going to do it right now.
No, no, no.
What?
713-212-5-790 7-1-3-212
stop texting
I can't I turn my phone off
I gotta read this is off my phone
look we're trying to get rid of the mantra of us being a giggle-fast show
and you're not helping to call us
sorry we like to have fun on the show
coach Kurt the douche says we were a giggle-fast
if you wanted to scream at each other for two hours
you think it happened or four hours
The fifth most prolific free agent in this
off-season 2024 market is Alex Bregman
what?
Yeah, I'm assuming this is number five.
I got this off a tweet.
Oh, fifth. I thought you said most.
Sorry, you said fifth most.
The fifth.
Yeah.
Most sought after for age.
Yeah.
I missed for my brain skipped over fifth.
I was like most.
More than one soda?
Okay.
Reading, this is what ESPN has to say.
Who wrote this?
Passon or some other Giamoke?
I don't know.
I got this off a tweet from Michael Schwab, I think.
Oh, wow.
He didn't write it.
He's copy.
He's cut in pacing and things.
here. Yeah, we know.
Bregman seems to be the primary target of the Astros. That's a good sign. Check.
And the Washington Nationals, a very widely rumored landing spot for him.
Two teams that tend to be aggressive and not worry about models when chasing their targets.
Will Bregman get more than a narrow market than shortstop Bully Adamas?
Will, while having three or four times as many teams engaged,
Bregman has posted three straight four to five war seasons with a wide base of skills,
though he hasn't topped 26 home run since 2019 and plays a corner position.
The projected contract is what Ross, the range game, belong.
I saw this already.
They have them at six years, 187.
Now, six years, if he signs for six, nobody wins a lunch bet on this.
Or in our case, afternoon snack.
Yeah, we said plate lunch, though.
We can do breakfast.
We up the bet from a snack, too.
You up the bet to a plate lunch.
I did. I did updated.
Is your phone continue to go on?
Are people texting you now because they're listening to the show?
Yes.
You can't turn the volume down on that?
I'm trying.
Look at this.
All the way down.
Look at it sees, I cannot.
It's still texting like, it's out of control.
I'm getting a new phone this week.
So if you have my phone number, just text me all the way.
You can do it.
You can do the scroll down and then you should be able to do it like this.
Please do it.
Do it for me, please.
I don't think it's going to make a difference.
6-187, Ross.
Oh, you're right.
It already has the sound off.
Yeah.
I don't hear anything else. Do you want me to test it?
Go ahead. It's not going to work.
Focus on sports here. Six years, 187.
Okay.
That sounds about right.
Okay.
Sounds about right.
Six years, 187?
I'm thinking about one, one, seven years, 190.
I think the Astros, I would like for them to offer $5.150.
Yeah, okay, he's not going to sign that.
But is he really going to...
Wait a minute.
Your take yesterday was that they wouldn't offer $5.150.
Why wouldn't they?
Because I don't think.
the Astros are going to make a deal at all offer at all.
They're going to make some sort of offer.
And then is it going to leak out to the public and people are going to get mad about that?
I don't know.
Correa leaked his own offer.
Maybe the Astros don't want to get burned like that.
Why can't I not see the glass half full on this?
You know why?
On why, I don't think Bregman's coming back.
No, he's there is, because he's gone.
But see, there are Astro fans that are running to their Twitter account saying,
sign Bregman. Royalswold says
sign Bregman. Well, we said
Jose Al Tuve, Seimbray and Springer
and I mean, this even feels different.
We knew Garer Cole. We knew Garacol is gone. This feels
really different. Why? Because he's older
than all them. Because he is
Mr. Astor in the last 10 years.
Well, outside of Jose Al Tuve.
Yeah, but El Tube's not worried
about a contract. He's taken care of.
Yes, he is. I'm going off
of what I've seen in the past
and the track record of the organization.
And the track record is, we'll
pay you a lot, but we're going to
keep the years, not at a
minimum, but very club-friendly.
Under five, we don't want to pay
old players. And what happened when they did pay
old players, Jose Ibrahim and
Justin Verlander, who are either hurt
or useless?
I wouldn't say Jose Abria, I think of
thinking about it too, but yeah, you're right.
The Abraeu signing
has burned
the
Jim may never get over that.
Any thought of, I mean, yeah, they
paid an old player. Now was a three-year deal, but he was, what, like 35 when he signed it?
Correct. Or 34, whatever. And he was the only team in Major League Baseball won't
to give him a third year. Seems like the rest of baseball was smart on that.
Yeah. Okay. Well, I just, I see these things pop up and I think, okay, 6187.
I think a lot of baseball teams would sign him for that. I don't think he's going to get the
seventh year. That's why I'm in the bet with you. Okay. Well, we'll see.
Only takes one.
Mm-hmm. You have Channel Rome on your side.
He thinks he's getting seven.
That's a good guy to have him.
I side, baseball-wise.
If we're talking about LSU, he's going to be a little biased.
Yeah, probably so.
All right, 7-13-212-5-7-9.
If you want to jump in, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90,
if I say that Alex Bregman is going to sign a six-year-187 deal with the Astro or with anybody,
and it's not the Astros.
Because here's a thing.
The love for Alex is immense, and I love him personally myself.
but there were a lot of
there are a lot of people that just
think that it wouldn't be worth it.
The offensive production really since the
finishing second MVP voting just hasn't been the same.
And it's only going to go south from there.
It's 6187, I say do it.
I say 6187, do it.
Your threshold is five.
You're going one year extra for one of the hearts of soul of your team.
Gold glove winner, by the way.
You're taking a big L on that year of that contract or that last maybe a couple of years.
Yeah.
But you want to win now.
Yeah.
713-212-5-790.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Today's edition, believe it or not today at 150 is 150, 150.
I don't know who it is.

Would you do it?
Of course you do it.
Yeah, my money.

Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk 790.
Baseball, football, basketball in Houston.
Home for your home teams.
Welcome back to the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Hour number three, drawing to a conclusion,
I want to say first time ever,
a fourth hour unless there was some special circumstance of, I don't know, a hurricane or a flood or...
Well, when Lance and I first started the morning show, we did four hours.
That doesn't count. That was the proper gentleman.
Yeah. And then we would fill...
We would do...
We took pictures in a suit.
That was true. It was a good suit. A nice gray suit.
Yeah.
Good gray tie. It looked great.
That was the start of my weight loss. That was probably about 15 pounds ago.
Okay.
And then we would fill and we do an extra hour sometimes when Charlie would take McKay.
vacation time. Oh, okay. I don't really remember that, which was always, by the way.
I'm going to use the Charlie Polittle philosophy of vacation time. Like this year, I'm going to
live a couple days on the table. Just because. Well, I'm proud of you, Matt. I will not be.
2025, I'm taking every day.
Ooh. Hmm. That's, uh, that's eight weeks of Gordy. Between the two of us.
You will not be seeing me much in the second half of this month, as then I will be gone.
Well, we're going to get some Dan Matthews in here.
We'll get some Gordy in here.
We may be in a couple other people to come in and do something.
Because I'd be on the road of some of those times.
Special guest stars?
Trying to.
Okay.
Yeah, we're reaching out to Mike Tyson, I believe.
Yeah.
Michael Jordan.
Yeah.
Tiger Woods.
We used to be able to have really good replacements around.
Like Brian T. Smith, we miss him.
Yes.
Brian T. was an excellent feeling because he could do a little bit of everything.
He had a few opinions.
I just don't want to have people in here just to have people.
We can get them on from across the pond.
To talk about Houston sports?
Yeah.
I don't want to deep dive into NFL Europe.
He's still locked down.
He's not doing soccer stuff.
He's writing articles about American sports in Britain.
Yeah.
And pretty soon, did I gut feeling this?
There's going to be an NFL game in Europe every week of the year?
Maybe I think you did.
You know what?
I don't want to say every week.
Okay.
I think week one will be no.
And I think week 18 will be no.
Because I think week 18 is going to be too important.
They're in Germany this week.
Yeah.
But you see what the game is?
It's a dog game.
What is it?
Giants Panthers.
Ooh.
Seriously.
You have serious problems if you're going to get up earlier to watch that game.
Is this punishment for World War II?
We're sending them Bryce Young and Daniel Jones.
Oh, there is some talk of Bryce Young being traded.
Did you see that last week?
For what?
People thinking that maybe a change of scenery would help him?
They did trade away all his weapons now.
Who's his best weapon over there?
Jalen Coker?
Let me ask you this.
Longhorn legend, Chavian Sanders.
Were we probe Bryce or do we flip-flop on him?
I don't remember if I liked him or not.
I liked Bryce.
I didn't love Bryce.
I was concerned.
My biggest concern was the height.
And I wasn't advocating for the Texans to trade, if memory serves, for them to trade up.
When a C.J. Stroud happened, I was like, okay, well, at least.
Here's what I do remember about C.J.
liked him in the national
semi-final game.
It gets Georgia.
Didn't like where he played college football.
And I got caught up in that
and I will take...
I'll take the loss on that.
I fully accept that.
Told you, it doesn't matter.
The prime example has always been
the Texas Tech quarterbacks.
They never work on in the NFL.
Well, that Pat Mahomes guy is pretty good.
Yeah.
There's no real quarterback factory,
really, with the NFL.
Brady went to Michigan, Manning.
Tennessee. Well, let's take a look at who's great
right now. Mahomes, Texas Tech, that would
not be one.
Josh, I went to Wyoming.
So that's...
Exactly, like I said. Farmer for a factory.
CJ Stroud, Ohio State.
They had that a huge history.
Lamar Jackson, Louisville.
I mean, you had Bridgewater and Jackson
back to back. That wasn't terrible.
But Teddy was never a great quarterback.
Yeah.
Mississippi State for Dak, no.
Matt Staffett, Georgia.
Oklahoma?
Baker Mayfield,
Kyler Murray
Tuatunga
Valoa?
Alabama.
I'm sorry, yeah, he's Alabama.
Alabama's was Tua and Jalen Hertz.
And Bryce Young.
Bryce Young's done good.
You know, I think we answered our question.
There is not a quarterback factory in college football anymore.
I think it's just
quarterbacks, special quarterbacks,
it just seems to be pretty random.
No, there's,
There's no, I can go to XYZ school and grab a quarterback.
That's because it's such a hard job, to me.
It's such a hard job.
It's the hardest job in sports, being a great special quarterback.
There's literally 10 of 10 good ones in the whole country.
Yeah.
And there's been a lot of tweets about that in the NFL circles the last couple of years about,
actually in the last couple of weeks I should say, why does the NFL have a quarterback development problem?
the number one problem is it's just super hard.
Yeah.
Oh, but I hear Chris,
I can hear Chris Gordy in the distance
talking about Jaden Daniels and Joe Burrow.
Okay, well, then maybe he's right.
But my point is, you know,
you can say,
why aren't there more great physicists out there?
It's hard to be a great physicist.
That's true, Matt.
You're making a lot of good points.
I should record that.
I wouldn't, I mean,
you can't begrudge the crazy money
that is spent on those guys
because they just mean everything.
I mean, and CJ, if he used to go down,
franchise quarterback.
You're going from him to Davis Mills.
I mean, please.
CJ Strauss, he's going to get paid.
If you think CJ is having to run for his life,
imagine the stoic Davis Mills going against a front seven person.
Yeah.
It's not good.
Not good at all.
But we'll be fine.
So let me ask you this.
Why can't we have at least how many?
Okay, let's go quickly through this.
for the next minute I have here. How many teams
have just absolutely
disaster quarterback situations?
Real quick.
Carolina's a disastrous quarterback situation.
I mean, Bryce Young has been an absolute bust.
I'm going to say the Saints. I'm sorry, Derek Carr.
Saints? Okay.
Giants, yes. That's one. New Orleans, two. Carolina three.
Dallas, no, Seattle. Gino Spence, okay.
And Gino's good.
Tampa, no. So we're talking about
three teams right now in the NFC.
Browns.
Okay, let's go to the AMC.
New England?
No, no.
They're not a disaster.
Drake May's...
You like him?
I think he's plain decent.
Okay.
Vegas, yes.
Four.
Yes.
Jacksonville, even though they're two and seven.
Taylor, a Triber has been overrated.
Not a disaster.
But not a disaster.
It's four.
Cleveland five.
Tennessee makes six.
Yes.
Jets?
No, even though Aaron Rogers is underperformed.
I would say, I think,
I think they'll be looking at quarterback in the office.
Indianapolis, yes, it makes eight.
So we're talking about 8.
We're talking about 25% of the teams in the NBA or the NFL.
That's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Yeah, but I think it's about that many that are like feel like they're completely set.
Now, do you have a lot of mids?
Yes.
You have way more mids today than you did, say, 15, 20 years ago.
All right, let's get to the final hour of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Today's edition and believe it or not, it's going to be about election history.
Yes.
highly Wikipedia.
I mean, I'm going to use Wikipedia.
You can go Google election quiz.
Yeah, I know, Matt.
Oh, sorry. I mean.
I've been doing this.
This ain't my first rodeo, Matthew.
All right.
All right.

Lunch timers. This is the Matt Thomas show.
Final hour of the Matt Thomas show with Ross. If you're just joining us,
A, where the hell have you been? B, damn glad to have you. And second, we're not going to three o'clock
today. We are now 10 to 2 here on sports talk. Some of the morning. It's going to take some time for all
us to get used to it. We'll be fine, Rossi. We'll be just fine. Of course, we can't eat in the middle
of the day. How do y'all do the work, do you shift workers work where you don't get, like we don't,
you don't get breaks in our show. We usually eat breakfast in the morning. And then you can eat
lunch at two, a little late luncher. Like for instance, not to give a shout out to a fast food
restaurant, but there is a fast food restaurant breakfast item that I happen to adore.
Okay. It's the steak, egg, and cheese bagel. Oh, so glad it's back.
from Rick Ronald's.
And usually I split that with my wife because there's a lot of food.
Oh, really?
I crushed it by myself on the way of the hair this morning.
I'm proud of you.
That's why you've been having a little extra pep in your step.
Is that what it is?
Yeah.
And late coming back to a couple breaks.
No, I'm fine.
So I'm going to rotate.
That of the morning, I'm going to have French toasticks from Rackenarrocks.
Can you bring me some?
And then I will do probably an egg muffin.
And then maybe oatmeal from Rar Rucks, too.
Just rotate those four.
The oatmeal is good and cheap.
Does Romero bread do an oatmeal too?
Are you having a stroke?
Sounds like it, isn't it?
All right.
713, 2125.7.
Believe it or not today is all things about the election.
150 today, which is going to throw some people off?
Oh, yeah.
You have 46 minutes.
You keep saying it and it keeps throwing me off because I keep looking at the clock.
I'm like, oh, I got two hours.
Tomorrow, I'm going to be with us.
What time?
Well, it was supposed to be one.
We can still do one.
Yeah.
And then I guess we can still do next year a spot at 1230 still.
Yeah, spot is still good.
The player interview will have to be moved.
Ooh, that's right.
And might be going to the A team.
Ooh.
Oh, man.
They're always catching bikes for us.
That's fine.
Good luck interviewing.
Well, I was going to say Seth Martinez, but he was let go.
Yeah, by the way, Seth Martinez gone.
Trey Cabbage gone yesterday.
There was somebody else that.
Oh, Jose are Keith.
That's a gut feeling I hit.
I told you if I was never pitching for the Astros again.
I was right about that.
You might have put your name on that.
Let me go look.
I think I did.
Give me at least some credit on that.
Oh, well.
All right.
713-212-5-790.
7-19.
7-190.
Start the 1 o'clock hour.
We talked to Larry and Tomball on 7-90.
You put your name on it.
Thank you very much.
June 4th.
That's a dub.
Thank you, Larry.
Good afternoon.
How are you, friend?
And delete.
Oh, fine.
Matt, you were talking about
quarterbacks from multiple quarterbacks from the same college.
You mentioned three that have an OU connection,
but actually for the past few weeks there have been five starting NFL quarterbacks,
all with an OU connection.
Who are those?
Well, it would be Baker Mayfield, my favorite boy.
Tyler Murray, Dalyland Hertz, Callum Williams,
And Spencer Rattler.
Who Williams?
Spencer Rattler.
Rattler was the common denominator.
Oh, you're claiming Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams?
They were both recruited to OU.
But did they go there?
Okay, well, then Baker-Mayfields and Texas Tech Quarterback.
Then Mayfield's a Tech quarterback then.
All five of those players started.
for OU at one time or the other.
And there's a sixth one that'll be there next year, and that's Dylan Gabriel.
He's likely to win the Heisman this year.
That'd be Oregon Ducks great Dylan Gabriel.
Man, you are claiming...
You're like...
What's a good analogy for this, Rossick?
I can't think of one right now.
I don't know.
Matt, the common denominator for the first five, of course, is Lincoln Riley.
Yeah, Lincoln, Riley.
How about this? How about Lincoln Rowell? Let's go to Lincoln Riley for a second.
He left Oklahoma to go to the Pac-12 because he thought it would be an easier chance for the national championship.
And then one year after he's there, they decided to go to the Big Ten.
And now he's middle of the pack in that conference.
He's getting a boatload of money.
And getting a boatload of cash.
That's agreeable. He did stay at OU though for about five years.
So I can't blame him too much.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you.
Thanks, Larry.
Good reference.
Boom or sooner to you there.
Oh, come on.
Why, it's all right.
Don't say that.
Why, it's fine.
I have no affinity towards them whatsoever.
Oh, you sucks.
What time is it?
It's 107 and oh, you suck.
There we go.
The absolute what?
Lowest of hanging.
No one of that gross.
I'm sorry, what's the great Cougars chant?
We don't have to have one.
We're MF and Cougars.
Oh, that's great, man.
That's pretty good.
Oh, that's genius.
Wow, blew me away.
Talking about the cougars.
By the way, that woman.
All these colleges have stupid sayings.
It said they're 18, 19-year-old
come up with them. So it's
107 and oh you sucks. It's like
something like, oh, that's so in original. It's called a rivalry, Matt.
I know you don't have one over there.
We're going to come up with things.
Okay, you really
want to claim that it's 107
oh you sucks is really, really a fun,
interesting way to badmouth your rival.
Amongst, yeah, why not?
Okay.
Does another school do it? That I don't know of?
It just seems like it's not entertaining about it.
Nothing good. It's not entertaining?
It's one of those, if you know, you know,
the things, Matt.
All right.
I guess.
And I'm going to, yeah, it's not extremely clever.
Like, he's a bunch of 18, 19 year olds came up with this and God knows when.
And then probably the 1940s or something.
No one of that female listener who took a shot on me on Twitter hates me.
She's a big UT fan.
Is she?
Yeah, she's far as the dumb bee that goes, it's 101 and all you sucks.
Matt, don't worry about these people.
That's fine.
All right.
I only do that one day a year.
And I respect you for that.
I can't do it one day a year.
Come on.
No, I'll give it to you one day a year.
You can clip that.
713, 212. I'm clip my own stuff.
713.
2125790.
713.
Women's field hockey.
That's what else is on.
I don't know.
What difference between field hockey and lacrosse?
The ball has to stay on the ground in field hockey.
Like a puck.
Oh my God.
That's got to hurt their backs.
Yeah.
I know.
I'm sure they'll have back issues.
Some more than others.
I mean, I'd watch this.
All right, Matt.
Focus up.
we always try to watch live sports in here
and we're definitely not going to watch Pat McAfee
so I put on
we had on some Turkish League basketball
that game. Turkish League basketball ended
so now we're on to women's field hockey
and by the way Syracuse is the 1-0-0-0-0-Virginia
it's on the ACC network.
Yeah, you want to make a bet on this? Who you got?
Why aren't hockey players have been back trained?
They have been down the whole time.
They have longer sticks. Can we get them longer sticks?
Everybody wants to have a longer stick once in a while.
Yeah, absolutely.
2-15. These ladies need longer sticks.
Oh, so we have, we,
brought up field hockey before.
How did you find that clip, Connor?
As Matt Thomas would say, only one show in the marketplace.
That's exactly right.
Talking women's field hockey.
Well, we're not talking NFL trade.
We've got an hour, 40, 50 minutes left, and Texas have done squat.
They're all getting back surgery after the season.
They're very attractive, generally speaking.
Matt.
What?
They're all old enough to be your daughter, first of all.
That's half plus.
Well, that's true.
Forget what I said.
They're all lovely young ladies.
Their parents must be very proud
This has hurt my back watching this
I got to change it
Yeah, change the channel
We'll put Pat Mac's feedback on
No let's not do that
All right 713-212-5-790
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-9
Do we have we take it a rocket call yet today?
I don't want to do obligatory rocket's call
We have to
You're getting your squad's above 500 right Rossi
They're 4 and 3 now
3 baby
I've done seven games already
Yes you have
The season's just flying by
Yeah
game number eight of 82.
10% of the season coming up Wednesday.
That is crazy.
You know, in all seriousness, the Texan season, they're six and three.
Yes.
There's eight games left for the bye week.
There's nine, not a biweek and off week.
Yeah, when I was watching Red Zone on Sunday at some point, Scott Hanson said,
by the end of the games at noon, we will be over halfway through the season, and I wanted to cry.
It's like we spend all these months dreaming of our fantasy drafts and getting in front
of the red zone and going to games and planning our trips.
Like the Cougars football season is might be over in three weeks.
Now, if they went to, they went two out of three.
Okay, that's enough from you.
If they go two out of three, they go to a bowl game, so we'll get to have another
month of excitement.
Yeah, that'd be nice.
Go Cooke's.
That's nice, you to say that.
Wishing them the best in the Birmingham Bowl or whatever.
You know what?
Let me take some.
I'll take a bowl after this year.
Are you kidding me?
After what I thought was going to happen?
Yes.
As somebody who lived through the Charlie Strong and Tom Herman,
errors. I do not take bowl games for granted. So you get to a bowl game. That's fun.
All right. 713.2.5.790. The Rockets did get a victory last night. We'll get into that a little bit.
We have, believe it or not, today coming up in about 40 minutes from now. And we have, what else is going on?
I'm trying to think of. We end up trade deadline. Texans have been largely quiet. Jonathan M. Alexander with a good story in the
Chronicle website about that. NFL from last night, Kansas City won an overtime against Tampa Bay.
and election day, which we've covered already in the three seconds of political talk on this radio show.
713-212-5-790. Are you hungry? I can tell you for a fact that Ross and I are starving right now.
Big City Wings is where you should go to enjoy a fine, fine meal. And it's Tuesday, which is buy one, get one free wings.
Bone in or boneless. You get 10, they'll give you 10. You buy 15, they'll give you 15. 20 gives you 20 and so on.
and so on. Get some ranch dressing, get some blue cheese, get your favorite side, whether it be
waffle fries, potato wedges, onion rings, and you're going to enjoy an amazing night of buy one,
get one free wings at any of the 13 big city wing locations. Not only are you going to get that,
but they also have a drink special today that, frankly for me, is a little dangerous, dangerous in a good way.
Tea time, $3 Long Island teas at any of the 13 locations. So it's two for Tuesday wings and $3 Long Island ice teas.
any of those locations.
Find the Big City Wings near you.
It's an easy check.
Go to bigcitywings.com for two for Tuesday wings.
Matt Thomas continues on Sports Talk 790.
Somebody called off air.
Our salesperson today is Taylor Murphy.
She was sick last week.
She's back in the office today celebrating that.
Wonderful.
If you want to reach out to Taylor, call 713-212-8,000.
She's a salesperson today, and she will give you great rates.
on advertising on this radio show.
With Ross, yeah.
Thank you.
I mean, I will take some to...
Ross and I would both each like a...
No, you're doing fine.
How about we can do a tandem?
We've never done that.
We could do it.
Now my name's on the show, let's go.
Let's go.
I have a hand them, tandem everything.
A bunch of tag teamers.
713-212-5-790.
Call Taylor at 7-13-212-8,000 and say,
I want to advertise on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Let's go.
I'm in money.
We all need revenue.
Some more than others.
You're all right?
What's the matter with you?
I just, I don't know.
About 15 times a day, I've got to bite my tongue on this show.
It's funny, I should probably bite mine more often.
Yeah, me too, actually.
So.
So, what are we doing when we're off at two now?
Well, I'm going to vote.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, and then I'm going to go to Carly's volleyball game.
You can check the lines, right, as far as how long they are?
Well, I'm going to go to
They're playing at Summer Creek High School tonight
So I'm going to go by a school by
Elementary School by where the Summer Creek is
So kind of knock out, stay in the area
By the way, if you live in Harris County, you can vote anywhere you want in Harris County.
Okay, I didn't know that.
Yeah, I didn't know that either, so
I'm just going to do it, just do it.
I mean, I feel like that's a, if we're giving the right to do it, might as well do it.
Okay.
I'm looking up election stuff for believe it or not.
Loest, this will be a little nugget for people.
Okay.
Lowest percentage turnout of voters
in by state.
Is?
The lowest state was
Oklahoma.
In 2020.
In 2020.
Okay.
Oklahoma.
That's a freebie for you guys
at 150 today.
You can use Oklahoma
and you can use a different state.
Sixth lowest turnout?
Texas.
Texas.
Yeesh.
Okay.
Highest turnout?
Your folks in Minnesota.
Oh, yes.
79% turnout.
That's, wow.
I think we're going to say
some record numbers.
Because first of all,
the early
voting has been astronomical
in a lot of states. Yeah, but there are people
that think that the, I guess, the early, since so many
voted early, that might put
lower turnout here, so who knows?
All right, Rockets,
by the way, the NBA is off tonight
because they want everybody to vote. We had staggered
games last night. Yes. I think
that's cool. That's great. I think it should be a national holiday.
Why wouldn't election day be
a national holiday? Kids are off school today.
Oh, they are? Yeah. Okay.
Why are we here?
because we were told to work at 10 o'clock.
Oh, that's true.
We do what we're told.
Yeah.
I will not question anybody around here.
We ain't going to ruffle feathers, you know what I'm saying?
But I think it should be a national holiday.
What do you think?
No, you can still do your business and be done in 10 and 50 minutes.
Some people don't.
Some people have to work multiple jobs.
Yeah, but there's early voting.
I mean, if you're not going to vote, you're not going to use my job as an excuse.
You've got plenty of days.
I think it'll be, I think there are people who,
it would be a lot easier if this day were a national holiday.
Absolutely.
I think it would up turnout?
I couldn't hurt it, put it that way.
But you get plenty of opportunities to do it ahead of time.
I think turnout would go up, and I think that's a good thing.
Yeah.
Well, like I said, I'm going to be out of the air in a few minutes, and we'll go down and see what we'll do.
We'll decide.
Good luck.
I'm undecided.
You're a writing vote.
Write yourself in.
If I could get 10% of the vote, I would write myself in.
Oh, you know what?
I'll go vote.
I'll go write you in.
So all these, it'd be like Trump 49.9, Kamala Harris, 49.9, M. Thomas, point one.
Yeah, that'd be cool.
You'd go down in history.
Didn't who was the, wasn't there a guy with a strange name that was running for office?
He got like 1% one time.
Cowboy had old guy.
Oh, God.
Kinky Friedman?
Cankey Friedman.
May he rest?
Yeah, he did.
He's dead.
I think Kinkie's dead.
He ran for governor.
And he got one.
1% I think we're here? Something crazy like that?
You don't look. No, you don't have to. No, don't look.
I want you to focus on sports.
Because people come to us to get away from politics.
That's true. And you're talking about it. I'm moving on. I'm moving on.
All right. Rockets last night got a win, San Antonio tomorrow night.
He died this year in June. Kinky Friedman.
Boy, I should use him for a life or dead, believe it or not.
Ripped, yeah, too late.
Rockets win last night.
And if you're a rocket fan, want to call in and say, hey, do you feel better about what Jalen did in the fourth quarter of the game last night?
Do you feel better that Alper and Shangoon was out there playing valuable minutes?
Amen Thompson
playing some spectacular defense
And here's the thing
If you're in New York
I know you're not happy
That you lost last night
But you basically tried to beat the rockets
With seven players
Kinky Friedman got 12% of the vote
He got that much
Thought we were going back to sports
Get off that damn page
Whatever you're on
Rick Perry 39%
Chris Bell 29
Carol Keaton
Strayhorn
18%
Kinky Freeman 12%
So how long goes that?
2006
Okay
Sorry what were you talking about
I was zoned out
I was you got me on
This is I get a week
Wikipedia holes.
It's the fourth hour.
I'm sorry.
I've tried to get you to talk sports with me
for 12 seconds here and repeatedly
and get off that website.
Turn it off.
Close the computer down.
Don't stare at me like that.
That makes me, that's creepy.
I'm just like,
now you're looking at me with adoring eyes.
I'm closing my eyes on this.
All right, I'll back up.
I'm locking in on what you're saying, though, Matt.
All right.
I got the, I got the rocket's winning 48.
Can they get to 48?
Maybe.
Because I'm biased.
Purely.
I put them in 45.
Total's 43 and a half.
You got them five over the total, so what?
Okay.
It's not bad.
You see Milwaukee's 1 and 6?
Yeah.
I think they said it's been like a bunch of hundreds of teams have started that way
and only like 12 of them made the playoffs.
You honestly not play last night.
It's Drew Holiday playing for them?
I feel like he's always hurt.
I don't know.
Not Drew Holiday.
No, no, no, no, no.
Chris Middleton.
Drew Holliday's with the Celtics.
Chris Middleton.
Is he been playing?
I know he's been hurt a lot
the last couple of years.
Aggie legend?
I don't know.
Yeah.
I do want the Rockets to make the playoffs.
There's a good buzz
in the TOTA Center can get fun
if they make the playoffs.
It was going on Saturday.
A lot of Nick fans
the game last night, by the way.
I heard some Nick fan roaring.
It was like in one section of the arena.
How did New York fans find a particular area of the arena
and buy up all the tickets?
Robert Ford.
He probably bought him for everybody.
Well, he had my tickets.
He did.
I mean, he's giving me some of his Astro tickets.
At least I can do.
Oh, wow.
That's good.
Tomato, tomato.
Wait, that's not a tomato tomato tomato.
Tad.
Tad for tat.
Tomato is better.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hmm.
Tomato doesn't apply at all.
No, it doesn't.
Tit for tat is what I meant.
Okay.
Tit for tat.
It's the fourth hour.
I'm tired.
No, we're going to get past this.
We're going to rally.
No, I'm going to get some good rest tonight.
My sleep schedule's a little off.
I'm ready to go.
I got tomorrow night. We've got the show and the Spurs Rockets tomorrow night. So we'll have it for you here on 7.20.
College basketball last night, Houston Cougars took care of Jackson State. Longhorns lost to Ohio State.
A&M lost to Central Florida. Power of the Big 12.
What was the line on that one?
I've been upset. But Aggies were ranked, but I mean. Maybe a small favorite for A&M.
Longhorns are ranked in Ohio State wasn't, but it was a one and a half point spread. I mean, ranked by 57 points.
That's a cover. Wasn't it 37 and a half or something?
It was in the mid-30s, yeah.
Now, here's the thing.
You want to have home games to kind of get warmed up.
But I would say this, and like I'm not going to tell Kevin Hunter to do his thing because he's won a boatload of games.
But I almost feel like you want to play somebody a little bit better just to keep a competitive.
No, I'm okay with that.
I mean, to start off the season for a game or two, like the Longhorns played their first game against Ohio State.
It's like, can we get a warm up?
Because we're going to go from playing Jackson State last night to playing Auburn on Saturday.
I feel like a...
No, that's good. You ramped the season up. That's how you do it. I like that.
And I would like for...
I'm doing two of their games on television the rest of the way.
One is against Toledo.
You get the dress rehearsal against Jackson State.
Yeah.
And then you get the main event.
Yeah.
And then they're going to go to Vegas over Thanksgiving
where they're going to play in that big tournament where they pay the athletes.
Kevin's like, the only reason I'm going to this thing is I can pay my athletes off.
The Longhorns were in Las Vegas for the Hall of Fame series.
Is that something else?
No, this is a brand new event.
This is where they're giving each one of the eight teams a million dollars.
One million dollars.
You know what I don't like about college football year to year?
I don't know.
Is it more stable with the Cougars?
You have to learn the team every single year.
There's like, okay, where did he transfer from?
No, every single.
Where was he there?
No, no.
If you looked at a spotter board or the too deep of every college football team.
Basketball.
I'm saying I'm football, too.
Okay.
It's loaded with transfers.
I mean, I look at Kevin Ashenfelder.
He does his spotting boards, and he'll put name, weight, where he's from.
And then there's always going to be a space for where that person was previously.
Where he transferred from.
Yeah.
I mean, teams are littered with transfers.
Yeah, I guess in football, too.
It's harder to learn the team every year, too.
Because you used to watch guy, you know, back in the old days.
This guy was a freshman.
He got some snaps or some minutes, and then he got better.
And then you're like, oh, wow, he's really grown or, oh, he added some weight.
And then by their time they're a junior, they're really good.
They're really good.
But you know what my philosophy about college football is, and to a lesser extent, college basketball, the players, the fans of those teams don't care what their names are or who they are.
I mean, if you're Texas, Alabama, Ohio State, perennial national title contender teams, you get to know your players.
Yes.
But I can tell you, my U of H brethren doesn't know eight U of H players.
Maybe they know four or five basketball players.
I think it's different for bigger proof.
Okay.
How many, if I wouldn't find a Baylor fan, could Baylor fan?
Can Baylor fan give me 10 Baylor football player names?
I'm talking about, like, I mean, how many, for example,
there's like five, six message boards for Longhorns and Longhorn fans.
How many Baylor ones are there?
I don't know.
I don't go to those things.
Yeah, I don't know.
But I think there are a lot of people who get into recruiting, get into transfer portal,
get into all that type of stuff.
Okay, then I'm going to speak on behalf of only my school.
My school, I don't think cares what the players' names are in the back of the jerseys.
They care what's in front.
and I'm okay with that.
I will speak for Longhorn fans.
I think a lot of them do get heavy into the recruiting
and heavy into, I mean, there's...
Well, if you're in Austin,
okay, you're not...
There's orange bloods.
But if you're in Austin,
and you are not competing with pro of sports teams,
your sports talk is going into deep detail of,
like, when the Craig Way show goes on,
he's not breaking down the NFL from last night.
He's getting into Texas getting running for this week's game again, set upon it.
Can Alfred Collins step up with Tavondre Sweat and Byron Murphy?
going into the draft, stuff like that.
Exactly.
Or in bigger cities,
I would be safe to telling you that Miami Sports Radio
doesn't have a deep dive into Miami Hurricane Too Deep Talk.
Okay.
Frankly, the only thing we worry about at U of H is,
who's the quarterback going to be?
And Donovan Smith has been replaced by Zion Chris,
and he has been really really good.
Let's ask Gordy, Tiger Droppings.
Oh, but Gordy's on, every market he goes on
is college football heavy.
I know.

I want to tell you about 2 Creeks
Crossing Resort
this is a locale that is
near Lake Livingston that I promise you
you get up to see the folks at two creeks
and you're going to enjoy the experience.
It is a combo park with yurts.
It's going to have glamping tents.
It's going to have these big, beautiful tree houses, big cabins that you can escape from the city for peace and quiet and great amenities.
These amenities would include barbecue grilling facilities, community fire pits, a boat ramp, docks and slips.
There's a playground.
There's resort-wide high-speed Wi-Fi, concrete RV pads.

We look forward to you spending.
your middays with us all as much as you can't hear on Sports Talk 790.
Let's go to Chris in Missouri City.
Chris, thanks for holding on.
Good afternoon.
Hey, Matt.
So I was at the game last night, 6 and 106 surrounded by New York fans.
I don't know how they got that many tickets, but whatever.
I was surrounded by fans.
That's crazy.
I wonder why that one section in particular.
I wonder if there was like a New York Knicks fan group or Houston and all decided to buy in the same area.
Right.
and they also won, like, they were next to the section that won, and that was full of New York fans.
Like, you know, the section that cheers loudest, they won because there was nothing with New York fans.
That was crazy.
But what I caught about was the closing team that was on the floor last night is jelling and going to be so good as they matured together.
That defense, I think it's the youth, athleticism, and just a will to play defense.
Amen was spectacular on Brunson in the fourth quarter.
I think his length just bothered him at the end of the end of the game.
But Tari Easton, Amin Thompson, Green, Sanguon, and I forget who the 50 is on the floor last night.
But they clapped down, and I'm sure the coach was extremely happy, man.
That five closing is going to be tough on West and Conference teams.
Well, it's defensive-minded.
Thanks for the phone call, Chris.
And as we talked about a little bit on the show yesterday,
EMA is not going to be afraid to not worry about who's making how much money,
who's playing that many minutes.
He wants defensive stops in the fourth quarter.
Now, obviously running and pushing and scoring, it's a huge part of the thing.
But last night, Rossi, the Rockets give up 97 points.
That is such an abnormality in today's NBA that I guarantee you,
as much as fun as it was seeing Alpy's score
as what he did in the first half
and seeing Fred hit those three pointers early.
He had to be as more proud,
if not even,
than anything that he saw offensively by the work that
a man Thompson did on Jalen Brunson
because Jalen, it's just really, really hard to stop.
And it's really hard to stop a guy
that's still primarily left-handed 95% of the time too.
Yeah, they want to push pace
and they want to defend well,
and that can be harder with Alperin-Changoon on the floor,
who did get a lot of,
of minutes, but he also wasn't in the closing
lineups against the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks.
So you want to use Alpern Shingoon's strength and his skill set,
and that is the back to the basket game, the playmaking, all that type of stuff,
but also sometimes it can come at a cost.
Meaning, I need a permanent jump shooter.
I don't have one on the floor.
Because, yes, if you have, on lineups,
we have M.N. Thompson and Alpren Shingoon on the floor,
teams don't have to respect either of their three-point shots.
No, you lose a deep perimeter game. I understand that.
And so what you're going to have is you're going to have the paint packed.
Everyone sags way off of Amin Thompson and sags way off of Alpern Shingun.
So that's fewer cutting, that's fewer driving lanes for a guy like Jalen Green,
who is best to add his best when he is cutting and getting to the basket.
But what I see from a men 15 feet in, I can live with.
Problem is, when you watch the rockets and a men has the basket,
ball, the defender sag off.
Yes. And you see him wide open.
And then you have to make the decision. Do you take
the shot and trust it? Or do you
try to take one dribble in
to get a little bit closer? Then the body
comes after you and then all of a sudden that free
and easy wide open shot becomes a
contested shot. Yeah. So
a man is doing a good job adjusting. He's
still driving. He's attacking those situations.
If somebody's sagging way off of it, he's still
trying to get to the basket and create for others, which he can
do. So it's going to be an
adjustment period. And
We'll see what happens long term, but very clearly, very clearly,
Udoka loves Amin Thompson's defensive energy and playmaking ability and kind of do everything,
Swiss Army knife type of ability he has.
And I said this about anything in basketball, it's hard to play defense.
It's a lot of effort.
It's athleticism.
It's scouting their opponent to know what he does, when he doesn't do well, how to put him in different spots of the floor.
but most importantly it's about
athleticism and effort and want.
I would say also extremely important fighting the referees.
And you've got guys like Jalen Brunson
and who...
The swim moves that will try to drag fouls.
Fowl hunters.
Yeah, yeah.
And I mean, Luca Donchich does it.
I mean, Luca Donchus pump fakes eight times
and then flops and then they call a foul.
And the NBA doesn't make it,
and this is college basketball too,
it doesn't make it easy for you to play good defense.
No.
It's a very, very difficult challenge
to be an on-ball defender
and not stay at a foul.
Can't hand check.
I mean, yeah, these games are, the rules have been to facilitate offense.
And that's smart and that's good for the overall health of the league.
And, you know, remember we were watching the last dance and we're like, final score, 72 to 68.
Let me tell you, the NBA wants no part of 97-94.
They don't want any, they don't want games like that on the regular under any circumstance.
So, you know, but as much that we don't talk about loving defense, we respect the hell out.
of it. Yes. And if you have somebody who can do it, do it proficiently without fouling,
that's a big asset, and that's what Amin Thompson is defensively. And that's what the sweet part was
of the Saturday comeback, which eventually the rockets came up short, was that they triggered
their second half comeback because of Tarisen and Amens Thompson's defense more so than
Golden State getting cool or the Rockets getting hot from three. But I will say this, and we were
talking about this a little bit earlier on the show today, about how the, the
NBA is sagging a little bit from an interest standpoint because it feels like it's a three and D league and that's about it.
We almost get mad when our favorite shooters take the two-point shot when they could have taken one step back and couldn't have made it a three.
I like open threes.
I don't like just, like for example, at the end of the Golden State game, I felt like Jabari Smith Jr.
And some of the rockets, they just got a little two-three happy.
They were just ready to let it fly within the flow of that offense for open shots.
I'm more on board.
Just letting it go.
just to let it go, I'm less on board with it.
Well, and another thing is, too, is that coaches
will say you've got to keep shooting.
Yes. Like Fred Van Vleet didn't hide the fact yesterday.
He said, look, my numbers were terrible, but I'm a shooter.
I'm still a guy that can make threes in this league,
and I'm going to continue to shoot until I get out of my slump.
Jalen Green started that game 0 for 6 last night.
I'm sure there are people saying, oh, you start 0 for 6.
Don't ever shoot again.
Well, he made his next two, and those were clutch threes that won them the game.
Yeah.
And while the score card doesn't look great, the stat sheet,
if you watched the game last and listened to it,
Eight points from Jalen Green were a huge part of the reason why the rockets were able to withstand that late push by New York.
All right.
