Starting point is 00:00:00 So much larger than life. Yeah. Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show. 12-0-1 in H-town. What's happening, luncht timers? Good afternoon to you, and welcome to a Wednesday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 7-90, alongside Ross and Brendan. I'm Matt. This is not a snack-size edition of the show.
Starting point is 00:00:35 it's more like hours are being reduced. Like, you know what, Loubies is one of my favorite places to go eat. That probably comes to zero surprise to you. Interesting. Not favorite, but I enjoy it. Go get you a Lou Am platter? I actually do the full thing. The calories don't bother me as much over there for some of it.
Starting point is 00:00:57 I probably have not had Lubies in 15 years. How about you and I go to Lubies sometimes? Okay. There's one right down the street. Well, Lubies has... Do you got the Rockets game on? They do. By the way, we go right now to have to a 230. You think cafeterias are like where 80-year-olds go?
Starting point is 00:01:11 I might have been the oldest person in the place at 48th the other day. I mean, there are 20s, 30s. I'm not saying Luby's his hip. Yeah, I was going to say. But it's certainly not where, you know, you went with your grandparents. Was it lit? No, I would not describe it as lit. Was it turnt?
Starting point is 00:01:28 Have I told you my famous Luby story before? Which one? The one where you smashed a guy with a pool cue? No, that was at a slick willies. Oh, that'd be crazy if that happened at Lubies. So my wife and I and our kids were at Lubies one time, and Roger Clemens and his boys were sitting. That's right, yes. And just really quick.
Starting point is 00:01:44 And you guys harassed him. Well, my wife didn't want to harass him. She wanted to probably make out with him. And that's fine, because it's Roger Clemens. But she wanted to leave out of the door where Roger Clemens was because she wanted to say hello. I said, Kim, let the man be. Let him and his kids enjoy that Luan. or whatever full meal.
Starting point is 00:02:07 She goes, but there's a door. I said, that's the emergency exit. If you go out that door, the alarms will sound. Is that what you want? Because you want to go say how to Roger Clemens, you're going to get the entire fire alarms going off at the Luby's location. And that's my Louby story.
Starting point is 00:02:21 There you go. Now they're being sold apparently because Poppas is like, I've got to get out of this. Oh, they've roamed by Popas this whole time? No, not the whole time. But they have been the last few years. Or Pappas, I believe, is the correct pronunciation. Pappas, it's really no different.
Starting point is 00:02:33 all knows our yeah yeah, Mary's on the street's closed too. That's true. And there's today's edition of Food Talk on the radio program. We'll probably happen again. We're always hungry 12 to 3. Well, it's better than talking about
Starting point is 00:02:44 what the hell happened last night at Minna Made Park. Or college football. Well, Big 12 is good news today. College football's mixed. Yes. College football's me. By the way, Bob Bullsby, I don't think he'll ever play a Bob Bullsby sound by.
Starting point is 00:02:58 He's the commissioner of the Big 12. Because, energetic would be not really be applicable with but he did say some things today that I do want to mention and we'll do that coming up in the next segment of the show because obviously Big 12 was decided to they're going to do this
Starting point is 00:03:13 ACC is like we're going to do this there was never a doubt in the minds of the SEC they were going to play football. Yeah SEC wouldn't have to allow the invisible China virus to stop their college football. Pac-10 and Big 10 like we're good. Very interesting. So we'll get to that.
Starting point is 00:03:31 that a little bit. But what in, you know, what does our guy say? What in the hell's going on around it? Vincent Barney? You want to play that sound by? Let me just run through the things yesterday that would make you want to say, what the hell's going on around here? 713-212-5-790. Dusty Baker joins this radio program in 25 minutes. And he was very prompt last time. So it's not one of those 1233 things. I think he might be, he might be even calling in before the show even starts. Yeah, you didn't have time to mess around with us, man. No, you got to get right to. He's on a clock.
Starting point is 00:04:06 So where do you want to start? Matter of fact, get to the Lombardi. You're going to have to play this quite a bitch. So Josh Redick's trying to stretch a double into a triple in the second inning. Jose Al-Tube is once again picked off on the base pass. Garrett Stubbs, the backup to the backup catcher slash left-fielder slash, I guess, quasi-utility player. and a speedster in his mind. Trying to steal third base with Jose Altuve at the plate.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Ryan Presley in the ninth inning. Sy Sneed in the 10th inning. This is a disaster. It's too strong. This is a hot mess. That you went yesterday. Do you know San Francisco sucks? Well.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Hunter Pence. Hunter Pence with a three-run home run. Alex Bregman reaches base. four times yesterday with a home run in three walks and you don't win the game. Oh, by the way, you give up another four run, multiple run lead late in the contest. Don't, no, we don't want people leaving the station, so don't play it anymore. What a, y'all want to explain to me? It's very clear.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I mean, I would say snake bit is the way you feel after the last five losses. And oh, by the way, Alex Centron gets a 20-game suspension. Feels about right? Yeah, it seems about right to me. Could have been heavier, more heavy-handed, really. Well, I mean, he could have lost his job. Yeah, you tell a guy to come bring it in the midst of a pandemic and a coach nonetheless.
Starting point is 00:06:17 20 games. Yeah, just know your role. Just be a good guy to your own guys and don't chirp. That's it. Oh, he says he didn't say anything about anybody's mother. That's fine. But apparently he did something that cost him 20. And you know what it is, Ross is honestly,
Starting point is 00:06:32 it's provoking a fight in a world where major league baseball is like stay away from each other. Yeah, he escalated the situation. My guess is if this was normal world, non-pandemic, the suspension is 10 games. That's my guess. 10 games and a 162 game schedule. Yeah, message had to be sent. Yeah, so it definitely is. Just like Joe Kelly got the message sent too.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Aren't Astro fans. Come in here, bitch. Let's go. We're here. We are your sounding, but we are your therapist. We don't play medical doctors on the air, we certainly play psychologist. And if you need drugs, psychiatric help as well.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Somebody tweeting us in of the one says, Most Blown Saves in 2020. Astros number one was seven. Oh, by the way, did you see Channel Rumms tweet earlier today? Baseball America went through the minor league systems of all 30 baseball teams. You know who has the second to worst minor league system? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:07:28 The pirates? Nope. The rays? Nope. The Reds? Nope. The Giants? You can keep guessing, but you know the answer.
Starting point is 00:07:34 It's a huge of an Astra. Yeah, 29th out of 30. Making it probably not a great idea to trade what's left in order to go get somebody. You're going to probably trade a live body. And you tell me in that second-tier group of guys, can't trade Redick, can't trade Brantley, can't trade Springer, can't, man, I'm talking about guys that have, you know, no time left. Although it may be a little easier because guys maybe don't want to financially commit to people. You're not getting a lot of return. The number one player that has youth and is cheap and as a player that you could probably get something for,
Starting point is 00:08:21 probably Yaron Alvarez and he's not with the team right now. And he's probably going to be a one-trick pony for 90% of his major league career. Probably going to bash a ball a lot, but you're going to have to pencil him in as a DH forever. And that's what the asteros probably should do. So you wouldn't move that guy. No, you wouldn't move. I mean, he's under control for several more years. So there's no reason to move Yorda and Alvarez.
Starting point is 00:08:38 So any sort of semblance of prospect, they need at the major league level right now. Yeah, they've used them all. They need outfielders. They need arms. They need starting arms. They need relief arms. To be brutally honest, the only two guys probably among that group of guys we just discussed that you could get something for.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Forrest Whitley hasn't thrown a major league pitch yet. And Kyle Tucker, who's, you know, far from tearing the cover off the ball at the major league level. Batting, what is it now, 205? Let me see what he's bat. 2.6. Okay. Well, not that batting average means a lot, but I'm going to assume that his OPS is considerably under 800.
Starting point is 00:09:11 It's around 600. Okay. Yeah. Is that bad? Well, as we said, 800 is average. A800 is a competent major league player. I don't mean to have gaps in it, but I'm just,
Starting point is 00:09:23 I'm at times speechless. I understand. It's fine, Matt. We're all at a loss with the Astros. It's just frustrating that this keeps happening. You had it over the weekend. You get up multiple times, late in games.
Starting point is 00:09:35 and then you cough up the lead. And then last night, you're up at that point, what, six to two? And you lose that game? Three run, home run to Hunter. Can Hunter Pence just retire? Yeah, how old is Hunter Pence? He's got to be nearing 70. He doesn't hardly ever play, right?
Starting point is 00:09:50 I don't follow giants a lot, but he's not a... He's 37. Yeah, he's a once-a-week guy mostly as a pinch hitter. He looks like a mountain man. Shouldn't he be out chopping trees in the northwest? And he has the most awkward swing you'll find out there, but yet it works. And shout out to those guys at 100-penter. Pence Baseball Academy who listen to the show.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Yeah, look, we love you. We do love you. We do love you. Great, but I don't like when Hunter hits three run, home runs against the Astros. Dusty Baker in 20 minutes. Let's not mess around. We'll see what he's thinking. I'm sure he's grumpy. We'll get updates on Pedro, on Yordon, and George Springer, who, by the way, did pinch run yesterday. Yes, he did.
Starting point is 00:10:27 So he's, you know. And I think yesterday, Dusty said he wants him back Friday, I believe. Yeah. So that's good. Joseo Tubey is supposed to get a day off today. We'll find out the rhyme and reason behind that. I think it's a pretty good idea to figure out why. We'll do that. Plus, getting some of the things, including what Bob Bowlesby said. Oh, wait, 1230 today, Dusty Baker, 130, Joseph Duarte from The Chronicle, UHB writer, but covers college football in general. He'll join us at 130. And then Rockets launch pad with Sports RB at 2 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:10:56 You got a big get during the show on your launchback. I do? Yeah, it's big get. I heard it was like kind of a guy we just said the last second replacement. No, well, he might be a lot. last second replacement, but he's definitely highly wins above replacement guy. I heard it was like, well, I guess if we have to take this guy, we will. No, it's not actually, nobody said that at all. It's actually me. Oh, that's what I said, though.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Oh, at least you're saying it to my face now. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-2-1-2-5-79 if you want to get in with Dusty coming up in less than 20. First award for bronze roofing with over 30 years in business. The folks in bronze roofing are here today, and they will be here tomorrow. Roofs

Starting point is 00:12:01 And online, B-R-A-U-N-S roofing.com. That's bronze. Roofing.com. 1217, Matt Thomas show. We're going to 2 o'clock. It's on a snack size. It's a reduced hour edition of the show, right? How about it's like you got a big dinner coming up?
Starting point is 00:12:23 You have like a regular, you make sure not to go overboard at lunch. Yeah, because the happy hour is going to be good. Yeah, maybe you're going to Chama Gauta. Or to big city wings. Or to big city wings. Yeah. And so you want to make sure you don't go nuts for lunch. So you have like something substantive, but you don't want to go too crazy.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Like if you're going to the. drive through getting a Big Mac, that would be not be a good idea. If you've got a small cheeseburger and a drink. Or maybe like three tenders and a fries. Yeah, I like that. 7.13-2125 790. Is there another show in the marketplace that discusses food more than ours? I'd like for you to know what that is.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Tell me what that is. Because I don't think we can be beat on that. We are your food and information station. By the way, today, real fast, I'm going to be recording our first ever podcast of Plinko and Powerbombs. Wow. And old friend of the show, old sports 790 alum, Matt Jackson is with us. And I didn't normally would have picked Matt first for any particular reason, except that he and I have this affinity towards Kamala.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Not Kamala Harris, but Kamala the Ugandan giant. I was going to say, you really like that VP pick, don't you? I have zero opinion about that. I've had multiple people ask me what I like about the VP pick. And I was like, I don't know, man. I'm worried about the Astros blowing games. And what's going to happen with these rockets? They're injured.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Are they going to be all coming back and all okay? That's what I'm worried about. We are your political free show. I don't know if you guys are okay with that, but that's how we roll. But, yeah, so we will not discuss Kamala Harris on the Plinko and Powerbombs. It's going to be Kamala, the Ugandan giant. Okay. And we're going to do it face-to-face via Zoom.
Starting point is 00:13:53 So not only are we going to do an audio version, we'll also have the video for it. And we're going to record it today and probably give us a couple days to clean it up a little bit here and there. But we're going to start doing on a weekly basis or a couple times a month, depending on how busy the Rockets keep me. Hopefully which is busy. Are you going to curse on it? That's a great question. Brendan, how do you feel as a youngster as a podcast? How do you feel if your buddy Matt Thomas was to curse once or twice on these things?
Starting point is 00:14:15 I'm pro cursing. Okay, thank you. I'll do it. I do think, like you said, though, it's once or twice. You can't be, like, totally awful. Oh, yeah. Like, one of my favorite wrestling podcast is Jim Cornett. He swears so much that I have to turn it off because I get members of my family that I don't want to hear.
Starting point is 00:14:32 I mean, they're not, you know, they don't have like virgin ears. But point being is I don't need them to hear 14 F bombs in a minute and a half. Right. Oh. They shouldn't listen to any podcasts I would. do then. Yes, yours is coming up on. What is it? Yeah, it's a turnbuckles and that's too much. Yeah. You're always trying to steal my bits. Well, I came up with this weeks ago. You also did it for just 14 minutes too. I thought that was a great podcast as well.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Brad and Pearland at 1220 on Sports Talk 790. Hello, Brad. Hey, how's it going? Well, thank you for dialing in and what's up. Hey, I just quick thought and pick your brain on it. But, you know, a lot of games I've been working. Of course, we got this young rotation in there. And sometimes, some of these guys like last night, Pradesh, you know, doing a good rhythm, five straights out, and then they start talking about, oh, a bad matchups
Starting point is 00:15:19 coming up. You know, he's got three left ten hitters coming around, but the guys, you know, in a good rhythm getting out. No base runners, why do we pull them just because Blake Taylor's had a few good games? Well, I mean, but look who we're up. I mean, Tanner was a guy, you know, yesterday he had a
Starting point is 00:15:35 blemish, but he's been fantastic so far. He's been one of the rare bullpen arms you've been able to trust. Plus, you got to be honest, and I got to think about this. Paredes, it wasn't like he was throwing strike one, strike two. He walked a guy, only threw half strikes. And while he got those outs, I think the longer you go with him, the more vulnerable these guys go in. And on top of that, you now have them available to you today if you need him. If there's things to worry about in last night's game, I don't know if Pulling Paredes for Blake Taylor would have been the one I would have gone with.
Starting point is 00:16:08 The base running to me drove me absolutely insane. Oh, yeah. Tuvee getting picked off and Stubbs trying to steal. See, you can laugh about it. I can't laugh. I want to cry. Yeah. It's tough.
Starting point is 00:16:23 It's tough because even Tuvae, you just see it on his face because we've seen him get picked up multiple times. Oh, yeah. The announcers are sitting there calling it. This would be a good time for him to steal right now and first pickoff. Yeah. Thank you for the phone call. Good stuff, Brad. Rossi, I don't want Jose trying to try to.
Starting point is 00:16:38 going to tempt a stolen base anymore this year. That's the worst part of his game, and it has been that way since his time he's become a Houston Astro. And there are so many great things about his game. But his, what do you want to call it? Instincts. I mean, there was years where he had like 50 steals, but he had a bunch of cot stealing. So the percentage has never been really high.
Starting point is 00:16:57 And George has also gotten caught stealing for a number time. George's the last couple years easy. So, but I mean, it feels like to me that Jose, even during the heyday, which is, you hope the Astros are still in it. but 17, 18, 19 still found himself getting picked off way too much. I think sometimes he gets a little bit too. And you know, I'll say the same thing with his approach at the plate. Sometimes he gets a little too aggressive.
Starting point is 00:17:18 How many can you go look at cost dealings for Jose? Let's see. Yeah, there were this year. In general. It's just two. Okay. So the year he stole 56 in 2014, he got caught nine times. That's not a great percentage.
Starting point is 00:17:32 And then the next year, he stole 38 and he got cut 13 times. 13 times. led the American League and caught stealing three times. And it's not even cost dealings. It's, I think probably half of those are pick-offs. So he's got two stolen bases and two caught stealing. I think you need to be successful like 80% of the time or 75. To make it worth it.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Two to two is, by my math, Matt, not 80%. But Garrett Stubbs, unless Garrett Stubbs thought he was Carl Lewis. And sometimes you think you're faster to you. Like, for instance, I believe, I believe as an out-of-shaped white guy, pretty sneaky fast. I don't think the rest of America would echo that sentiment. Who wins in a foot race? You are Adam Clinton.
Starting point is 00:18:14 See, Adam told me how much he weighed yesterday. Okay. You think you got them. 400 meters. Oh, I'd run on a gas. Okay, how many yards? Okay, fine. 60 yards. 60 meters, I think, is the next one. 40 yard dash? Okay, yeah, you want to do a 40 yard dash? Clinton wins.
Starting point is 00:18:29 40 yard dash? Yeah, I'm not going to, I will never I will never tell you that a foot race is ever going to end well for me. I'm just telling you on the basketball court, I'm sneaky quick. I can get by that off guard real fast. How about you or Joe George? Oh, I beat Joe George. Matt's telling you he's agile.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Like he could juke. Thank you. Thank you. That's what I'm looking at. Cat leg quickness. Yeah, sneaky. Okay, fast off the line, but no staying power. Like, uh, like, uh, what's your face is sneaky hot?
Starting point is 00:18:56 Okay. So like, I like a, you know, right. Yeah. I'm the sneaky hot of running. Okay. But you would never go, man, he's really fast. No, you never would. But then you'd see me running on.
Starting point is 00:19:08 You certainly would never do that. You would then go, wow, I didn't realize he was fast. Well, you're like Garrett's stubbs. You think you're a little faster than you are. But the problem is Garrett thought he was a sprinter. And Dusty, and we'll talk to Dusty about this in a couple of minutes. I mean, he's like, I didn't call that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:22 What are you doing? You're not Miles Straw. Yeah. It was not a good situation. You can't do that. You can't do that. Look, Altuvae's been struggling, but you still can't do that. Isn't one of the Cardinal rules of baseball don't make the third out on third base?
Starting point is 00:19:37 Well, the Cardinal rule is the first and or third out at third base. Okay. It didn't happen twice yesterday. Well, it's not good to make it out anywhere. Certainly not the third out at third base. No, no. All right, 713, 212, 570. We're going to have to hold our college football talk to After Dusty, and that'll be coming up a 20 minutes.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Just real quick, for those that don't know, and there's still people trying to figure out because it's very confusing. Mac out. Big Ten out. Pack 12 out. ACC in. Big 12 in. S.E.C. In. American at this point.
Starting point is 00:20:12 In. Mountain West out. Mountain West out. Sunbelt don't know. Conference USA don't know. I think I got everybody, right? Rice postponed. Rice pushed back.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Rice members of Conference USA. Rice pushing back the Houston game to a perhaps to be determined. 1226. The Matt Thomas Show, Dusty Baker, joins us after I tell you about oops steam cleaning. 281, 822-0561 is a number I hope that you have memorized because I've been telling you about oops for over a decade now. And if you've not called them yet to have them come to your house to clean your carpets,
Starting point is 00:20:45 what are you waiting for? They only use true steam cleaning. They only use full-time employees, unlike a lot of steam companies that will hire contractors. It's a company that started right here in Houston. And they're going to do a great job with your natural stone and ceramic tile, your air ducts will clean. They'll clean your oriental rugs, your upholstery. And oh, by the way, their good old-fashioned A number one service is true steam cleaning on your carpet, it's done on a fair price by trained professionals.
Starting point is 00:21:13 281-82-2-2-2-0-561. 281, 82-0-561, and online at oopsteam.com. The Houston Astro! The Astro! The Astro! This exclusive Astros segment on Sports Talk 790 is brought to you by Expedity. The future of awesome. It's awesome. Time is 1232. It is the Matt Thomas show.
Starting point is 00:21:48 We are visiting right now with the manager of your Houston Astros, Dusty Baker. Skip, good afternoon. When I was teaching my children about baseball and base running, we were always told the first or third out at third base would be the most maddening. I'm assuming that feels the same way at the major league level for all the games you have managed. Well, it's the same way in any level. I mean, my son told me that last night, you know what I mean, and he's in college. And so that's what I've told him.
Starting point is 00:22:14 You know, some of the guys are trying a little bit too hard, trying to make things happen versus just, you know, letting it happen. And, you know, that's what kind of happens when things aren't going well. You get burnt for it. You know, these aren't very pleasant times. I really need some sleep. And I think my coaching staff needs to sleep because it, wigs you up in the middle of the night, you know, just wondering what changes you got to have to make
Starting point is 00:22:42 and make notes and about, you know, who you're going to talk to. So, you know, we've got a lot of work to do, but, you know, we'll get it done. You have mixed a lineup up a little bit. You're going to give, I guess, Jose a day off. And let's get to Al Tuvae for just a little bit because this is not the Jose Al-Ti we've ever seen before in our life. The bat is just not the same way that it was. There's been some defensive issues here and there. What have you said in terms of, you know what, take, what do you want him to do in these next two days as he gets himself, hopefully, out of this slump? Well, I'm, I'm invited to sit with me, like a couple managers did some with me when I was
Starting point is 00:23:16 playing, and just sort of notice, you know, who's hot, who's cold on their side, our side, start with their feet and see how full their feet are, or if they're real jumpy and they're probably not, not hitting very well, and, you know, it's a matter of concentration and focus, you can sort of tell. So, you know, it's as good every once in a while to just back off and then you can watch other people and then you get a true, you can make a true assessment of yourself, you know, because when you're going poorly, man, it looks like there's, you know, a Springer said about 10 days ago, it looks like there's 22 people on the field. They don't look like there's a hole anywhere and every time you look up your own two. And so it's a matter of concentration. and, you know, on desire and relaxation, but it's tough to, you know, relax when you're old for the world seems like.
Starting point is 00:24:08 So, you know, he'll get it together. And, you know, one thing you guys I remember is that, and, I mean, even though it's a season in your mind, it's still kind of at the end of spring training in your body. Because, like, I mean, these guys have 50 RBIs, I'm sorry, 50 at-bats. This is what you probably shoot for between 30 and 50 at the end of spring training, except that they, you know, they count. So, you know, we've got to stay close until we got all our big boys back. We'll figure out this bullpen situation. And, you know, it's really, you know, a tough thing when you're so close to, you know, getting a guy out.
Starting point is 00:24:52 I think we gave up like three or four, one, two hits last night. We gave up some in Oakland. you know, we've just got to figure out a way how to put these guys, you know, away. So I'm having a meeting today with Stromney and Miller and our bullpen catcher just try to figure this out. Dusty Baker here on the Matt Thomas show and Dusty, as you mentioned,
Starting point is 00:25:14 it just has to be that much more frustrating because of all of the close losses that you've had lately, but does that give you some hope to make you feel like you're close to getting over the hump? Oh, yeah, I mean, big time. I mean, you know, we're one hit away, you know, one strike away, one play away. You know, the ball last night gets through. I mean, that's a ground ball with a guy who can't run in rough. It's the same thing happening in Oakland.
Starting point is 00:25:41 You know, no, not in Oakland in Arizona. I mean, that's a double play ball that was just out of reach. So, you know, we've got to keep fighting, you know, concentrate, you know, a little harder. You know, make sure we get the signs because, you know, we've been missing some signs. and, you know, we haven't played well in all departments, and, you know, including us as coaches. You know, we got to concentrate a little more and do even more teaching now, I think, at the big league level than, you know, we've ever had.
Starting point is 00:26:14 So it's a different ballgame now. And, you know, a lot of these kids are rushed up here before, before they're really big league-wise, you know, mentally, physically, you know, games played. So, you know, we're trying to win games while we're teaching at the same time to make it easier on everybody in the future. It's safe to assume, Desty, over your managerial career, you've had a lot of great closers. You've probably had some really good setup guys over the years as well. Obviously, with Osuna being done probably for the season, that puts you in a different spot. With so many young men just getting their feet wet to Major League Baseball, I'm assuming you've not defined their roles.
Starting point is 00:26:50 And I guess the bigger question is, because of that, does that make your job more difficult to kind of try? to catch the hot hand because obviously, Ryan, the last couple times you've been put him in that closure spot, has not been able to come through for you. Well, yeah, and then, you know, last night, Taylor's been, you know, lights out. And, you know, like he throws a fastball right by 10th, and then hangs a breakball, you're positive in the right field feet. So, you know, from night to night, it's kind of jumped around.
Starting point is 00:27:18 It's kind of like a disease, you know, it jumps around from, you know, as soon as you've got one guy well, boom, it jumps around to somebody else. But a lot of these guys in our bullpen were former starters. You know, like, you know, they've never pitched back to back. That's why we rarely, you know, very rarely, you know, pitch our guys back to back. A lot of them are still learning how to warm up, you know, because as a starter, you know, they go long toss and then they come in shorter and they take like 20 or 30 minutes. But, heck, man, you know, they have like probably two minutes to get loose or three minutes.
Starting point is 00:27:52 So we're still teaching them how to get loose, how to take your time. carry themselves how not to get overly warm in case we've got to sit them down to say it for the next time they get up. So, you know, we're in the process of, like I said, of teaching as much as we are trying to win ball games. Because it's tough, I would assume, Skip, because if Ryan can't handle that responsibility, I don't really honestly know who plan B would be at this point. I mean, you mad to do it by committee. Hey, man, that's why we're having a meeting today. The thing about it is, I've learned, you know, closing by committee doesn't work. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:26 You know, because it doesn't work because you don't want the phone to ring down there and then eight people jump up and get nervous. You know, I mean, you would rather have, okay, if the phone rings in the fourth or fifth, there's a certain amount of guys that this could possibly be the phone rings of the six and seven or the eighth or ninth. You know, you know, guys like to know where they're going to be used. And, you know, anything about committee, you know, if you go with the guy with the hot hand and then you overuse him, then you've got to go back to the guy that you've been staying away from for a while and hope he does it. And then, after a while, nobody does it.
Starting point is 00:29:04 So, you know, we'll figure out. I'm really definitely figured out. All right. Don't worry. Yeah, all right. We won't worry then. A couple last questions. It's good to see George out there, a little pinch running.
Starting point is 00:29:16 You're assuming Friday may be an opportunity for him to get back on the field. play? Well, you know, George might be in there today as D.H. I just don't tell him yet. I haven't talked to him yet. Let me tell you. He's not, hey, Dust, he's not on Twitter, so I won't tell him it'll be our little secret if that's fair with you. Yeah, well, I got to convince Michael, because Michael's got kind of a bad leg that he's nursing. And so, like, you know, and George has a bad hand. So if we could put George's legs on Michael and vice versa, then, you know, we'd have a complete, you know, heck of a player. But so I'll probably D.H. Michael today.
Starting point is 00:29:55 And I'm sorry, D.H. George today, give Michael the day off. We hate to have Michael and Al-TUviyah off at the same time. But, hey, man, you've got to sacrifice one game, possibly for 10 to 15 to 20 games, you know, if they go down and get hurt. So, you know, we'll make it work today. And police time you're getting more encouraging news about Yardon Alvarez and hopefully his return soon. Yeah, yes, we are.
Starting point is 00:30:18 I mean, I'm looking at the injury report right now, and we're on, is playing in a game today, you know, trying to get three or four at that. You know, we're trying to, trying to speed him up but not rushing, you know, because, you know, he does have bad needs, and so he's got to come to take care of his knees while you're trying to get him at bat. You know, Diaz appears better. I mean, he's a guy that we really miss. He's our, you know, our super utility guy. and, you know, her key is going off the mound today. And so, you know, 20 to 25 pitches, you know, Roberto Asuna is still doing rehab, you know, Verlanders from rehab. So, you know, don't like these guys off yet.
Starting point is 00:31:04 I mean, you know, they're going to probably exhaust every avenue they can to try to come back and help us win without help them. I feel like I'm talking to the team physician. Skip, thank you very much for the time. Keep the faith. We'll talk again next week. Thanks for the visit. Take care of yourself. That's Dusty Baker.
Starting point is 00:31:19 He just gave us a rundown right there. And how about the encouraging news that George Springer will probably de age tonight? That's great. That is great news. Because here's the thing before he got hurt, the bat was fantastic. He was turning it around. Yeah, you'd start off slow. He's turning it around.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Bregman's turning it around bit. Hopefully day off, El Tuvae will be good. Yeah. And Bradley. You can tell. They're going to need to score about eight runs a night. How about that Brantley ankle when Joe Kelly stepped on it? He just hasn't never been falling percent since then.
Starting point is 00:31:44 So hopefully a day off would do them right. All right, good conversation with Dusty. If you want to chime in on that, you are more than welcome to do so. At 713212-570, 7190. 7-1-3-212-5-790. College football, still a hot mess. We'll discuss that. Anything you want to discuss what Dusty had to say?
Starting point is 00:32:02 We'll do that next here on the Matt Thomas show with a message here for Improve Myerection.com. Dr. Rorick has a sexual wellness institute over on Westheimer, not too far from the Sam Houston tollway. Go by and see him. consultation if you are having any issues with erectile dysfunction or overall sexual wellness. 281-496-3355. Starting point is 00:32:46 630355 and online and improve my erection.com. Darrell Mori here. Let's go, Rockets! This is the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. Some very sad news report just coming down from Mark
Starting point is 00:33:18 Berman over to 26. Bill Yohman has passed away at the age of 92. He had recently been in the hospital with COVID-related symptoms. He invented an offense. There's just no other way to say it. He invented the Veer version of the triple option.
Starting point is 00:33:37 And one of the sweetest men I've ever been around in my entire life, passing with the age of 92. Coach was my first radio partner when I did Houston Cougar football games in the mid to late 1990. I was 24 years old calling my first major college football. And here comes one of the icons of college football into my booth. And coach never pretended to be an analyst. was a cheerleader that happened to have a microphone on. And so some of the legendary calls we had would have him screaming as I'm calling a long run by, Antoine Smith was a running back at the time of the Cougars and great plays on defense
Starting point is 00:34:15 or whatever. But it was so crazy that he would scream so much that we'd have to turn his microphone down or off because he would yell so much into my microphone that it would bleed over into that. But a special, special man. loved the University of Houston just about as much as anybody I've ever met in my entire life. And I will say this, for a personal note, I got married in 1997. And Coach Yeoman and his wife, AJ, came to my wedding. And it meant a lot to me.
Starting point is 00:34:47 They had to go leave to drop a child off or a grandkid or a daughter. I don't know what it was, Ross. So he left and we thought, well, that was nice. That coach came by to my wedding in my wedding reception. They dropped the kid off or whoever had. the drop up and they came back to the wedding. Oh, really? I just thought it was just the coolest thing.
Starting point is 00:35:05 At the Colom de Ore or whatever. Oh, my gosh. Great wedding. I wasn't paying for it, but that's not a thing or there. But yeah, so rest in peace to one of my favorite people of all time. Bill Yohman passing with a great storyteller. Great, great storyteller, passing with the age of 92. So, rest and peace, my friend.
Starting point is 00:35:26 713-212-5-790. 713-212-5-790. We've got to get to some college football. We'll do that, but I've got a couple folks that want to get on the line and talk, so we always like to have you guys involved in the radio show. Let's go to Tim. Is it Tim or Jim? I can't see the name. Jim. Hi, Jim and Crosby. What's going on? Hey, I got questions. And do you think the Astros are in a buying mood to get an acquisition? Well, if you heard us earlier, I'm going to let your go get a little bit of a static on your line there. The Astros, according to Baseball America, has the 29th best minor league system based out of 30. Is that bad? Well, it's not, yeah, I'd say it's bad.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Yeah, I would say it's very bad. So that would, again, it's just subjective opinions, but Baseball America doesn't mess around. They do the research. We're not doing it just to be mean towards the Astros like everybody else is, apparently. But that would mean that the trades, the loss of players and the fact that have been a couple of first round that haven't panned out, haven't necessarily allowed the Astros to be to replenish their system to use in trades because of what they've already done in the past. So honestly, I don't know. Whitley's hurt.
Starting point is 00:36:46 Orchidious, Dusty Baker told us, is back on the mound, which is good. Who else did he ask about? Oh, who's the third player? Was it Yordon? No, Fernando Rodney. He's 43. It is what it is. Okay. So he's got creaky arms and legs just from existing. Throwing in him. You got 95 on the gun still? Let's go.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Well, nobody knows what the gun is. I don't know. Whatever. I would say I'm not holding on a lot of faith that a young man, I'm young, he's old. He's younger than you. It's true. But has a lot of wear and tear on the old Major League body. Yes. 17 years. How did you last year? You don't want to know.
Starting point is 00:37:31 I already know it was bad. Tell the truth. He pitched in 55 games last year. Okay. ERA of 566. All right. Whip of 1.615. So around 1, 1.1.2, that's decent.
Starting point is 00:37:47 He was at 1.6. That's not good. The ERA plus, Matt, which you love. 100 means you're about an average pitcher. He was in 80. Okay. So I'm not putting a lot of faith in Fernando Rodney. There's a reason he was with the Skeeters.
Starting point is 00:38:04 And then the new kid they picked up, Rayleigh. Yeah, he pitched last night. Yeah, he did. That was his first time on a mound that I major league game in like seven years. Yeah, well, apparently he was dominated the KBO for the Lati Giants. Which we figured out is between AA and AAA, right? Pretty much. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:24 That's okay. I mean, how are the KT. Wiz doing? I don't know. I didn't even pay attention to them. So, I would say... They're not going to be very aggressive. How can they be? There's nothing to give up and there's nothing.
Starting point is 00:38:38 And this is another thing. How is our teams going to make trades when 16 teams are making the playoffs and then you're going to have a bunch of other teams who think they can just sneak in because they're going to be close? We've seen this the last couple of years when they expanded the playoffs to five or six. We've seen that teams always think they're in it and then they're more hesitant to make trades because they say, hey, we're a couple of games out. We get the wild card.
Starting point is 00:39:02 We can catch lightning in the bottle. that's what everybody's going to be saying this year. So teams aren't going to want to make trades and the Astros don't have a lot of tradable assets as is. So I wouldn't expect any sort of earth-shattering trade. I would expect more for like this Rayleigh guy. A lot of players to be named
Starting point is 00:39:17 later, I think is what we would see in any trades that the Astro is going to make. Yeah, I... Brooks Reilly. Because here's the thing. The two guys that have been the marquee top prospects in the organization, Kyle Tucker's playing every day. Yes. That's our
Starting point is 00:39:33 has to. And Forrest Whitley has arm issues. Yeah, and Christian Javier is one of your top prospects. They need him. Anoli Parade is one of your top prospects. They need him. All these guys who are quote-unquote top prospects, the Astros need them at the major league level. It's because they got everybody hurt. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 00:39:52 You know, let's take a five-minute break from the Astros. Let's get to something more positive. It's not feeling great. Okay, let's talk about, I'll talk about Big Ten football then. Joseph Dwarte is going to join us at 130 on this. Okay. So we went through all the conferences.
Starting point is 00:40:05 So Bob Bowlesby is a commissioner of the Big 12th. Just paraphrasing what he had a conference call today with media. First of all, he said that the spring football makes no sense. And I didn't realize how much brushback there had been and pushback there had been to spring football from everybody. I think it doesn't make sense either. Well, in theory, you're right. It doesn't. But nothing makes sense in 2020.
Starting point is 00:40:31 That's true. What's the better option? So if you're going to keep athletic departments alive by playing 10 games in January and February, get the NFL right. You've got to do it. So I know that spring wasn't the most popular answer that you would be going up against guys that are going for the NFL draft and that you'd have to, in theory, try to play football a game in September. But nothing makes sense. So I wouldn't dismiss it nearly as quickly, but I'm a minority on that. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:40:56 I'm not the one making these decisions. He had also said that capacity for stadiums will be judged by the individual campuses and states. There are some people, A&M, and this is obviously SEC, A&M won 50% capacity. Because they're thinking, if we can do this right, and we play, toching, to Ching, to Ching, to Ching. I think it's thinking 25%, right? Yeah, they said 50 a couple weeks ago. Now they're down to 25. I think most schools that originally had said 50, especially in our state, are now backing down to 25.
Starting point is 00:41:32 He says no temporary members. Because look, Nebraska's out there going, hey, guys, I'm here. I want to play. Not going to do it. They don't really need them. They're going to play everybody in their own conference. That's nine games plus the one non-conference game on their home. That's 10.
Starting point is 00:41:49 That's 10 game season. They don't need anybody else. And ultimately, this was the funny part of it. that they don't want to be the only ones officially say we're playing. They don't want to be on an island by themselves. And that has been the struggle, I think, through all of this, Ross, is that none of them wanted to be the first. And that obviously the Big Ten and the Pac-12 thought,
Starting point is 00:42:11 well, if the Matt got there and show themselves out, then maybe we should do the same thing. What I don't understand, and this is why need help from you guys to open up the second hour of the show. Why do the doctors in the ACC and the SEC and the Big 12 say it's okay, but those other set of doctors from the Pac-12 and the Big Ten say this is a lousy idea. That's what I'm confused about. And by the way, just to make sure you know how I perfectly feel about this,
Starting point is 00:42:35 I want college football to be played. I really, really, really do. I think we've got to move forward on some things. I think if we're unscared the rest of our lives on this, we're going to see the complete implosion of college athletics. No one wants that. So maybe it's just a sports guy me more than anything else than the logical thinking person.
Starting point is 00:42:54 But I would hope that all the protocols are being placed, the kids' safest place that can be on Earth, would be with their football team, as long as they're social distancing, as long as they're doing all the things that they're supposed to do, that hopefully being in football, playing games, is safer than saying, kids, we'll see you next year.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Go back to your dorms, go back to your buddies in town, where the thought of maybe getting the erona would be significantly higher. But again, that's up for conjecture. Second hour, Matt Thomas show starts in a matter of moments. 713-212-5-790, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Yeah, and I've got to talk to you guys about how you're feeling. Rockets launch pad at 2 o'clock, hosted by Sports Irving. Wow, it's going to be a great edition. A great game recap. I'm your guest.
Starting point is 00:45:26 That's true. It's a huge get on your point. part. You know, we've been efforting for months. I know, Rockets, Pacer's at 3 o'clock. And then I'll be over on KTRH at 5 for Astros on deck. Man, we got you everywhere, Matt. Well, I'm a busy man.
Starting point is 00:45:40 You're running around. That's really about 10 steps. The voice of Houston sports, Matthew Thomas. You of H. Cougars, Houston Rockets, Astros on deck and post game. No Texans, though. 12 to 3 sports talk 790. Right. No, no Texans, though. Turnbuckles and this
Starting point is 00:45:56 is too much. Recording the first edition. of Plinko's and Powerbombs. Okay, it's just 15 minutes. I mean, the man's everywhere. That's gone. Oh, but don't forget Cameo. Oh, and on Cameo. Camio.com slash Matt.
Starting point is 00:46:08 I'm tremendous value on Cameo. I've had nothing but five-star reviews the entire way. No, let me go and drop a one-star. You can't. You didn't buy me yet. Dang it. Very affordable. 713-212.
Starting point is 00:46:19 I can chat with you for $2.99? Yeah, I don't make anybody ever pay for that. That's ridiculous. Yeah. Yeah. I chat with you daily for free. I know. Don't DME for three bucks.
Starting point is 00:46:29 It's not worth it. I'm not a great DM. 713, 212, 5, 790. So Big 12 is out there like, we're going. What do you think? Forgetting about what the experts are saying or not saying, how weird is this going to be this year? It's very bizarre.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Two super mega conferences, say what you will about what they haven't done in the last couple of years. But it's still a big freaking 10. And it's still the freaking Pac-12. It's two of the power fives. Yes. That's significant.
Starting point is 00:46:59 It's huge. Not enough teams to play bowl games now. Yeah, I think there's, what did they say? There is like, how many, they need like 81 teams for bowls? And right now, only 77 teams are scheduled to play. They better not be 81. I mean somebody's playing by themselves. Oh, yeah, okay, what, in 81, 80-something, whatever, at 802.
Starting point is 00:47:17 That would be weird. It's a two-for-one. You ain't be qualified for a bowl, but since they ran out of teams, you're just going to play each other. In the inter-squad game. It's inter-squad bowl game. But what do you do if you're Nebraska who's pissed? Scott Frost wants to play. Michigan feels like it's pissed too, but Nebraska's been really out there.
Starting point is 00:47:36 Yeah, they've been on the forefront saying we want to play. By the way, all their media rights where they get their money is control by the Big Ten. So even if Nebraska's that we want to play, where are their game going to be? They'd have to join another conference. And can they do that within weeks? You'd have to let the Big Ten would have to let you do that. And if I'm the Big Ten, I'm like, Brian, you joined our conference. you're either you're with us or you're against us,
Starting point is 00:47:58 even though you think it's bad. And then the Big 12 would have to split their pie, their pie as far as the money that they get from these contracts. And why would the Nebraska want to do that? Or why would the Big 12 want to do that after Nebraska said? I mean, it would be like A&M saying, hey, guys, we're over here too. We'll come back. We'll come back.
Starting point is 00:48:14 That's why the Big 12 hasn't been expanding for years is they're like, well, we can get this big money contract. And if it's in the contract, if we add more teams, they don't give us more money. So why would we do that until the deal's up? Right. So while Nebraska I applaud, you want to be out there. You're going to have to probably take four or five teams with you.
Starting point is 00:48:34 And it's so funny because you can't, you know, with sports, we're supposed to just be able to look at it as a fan, right? As fans, we all want football. We want, you want the Cougars out there on Saturday. I want the Longhorns out there on Saturday. But it's just far more complicated than that. There's the PR standpoint. There's the player safety standpoint.
Starting point is 00:48:52 There's the how much, the lawsuit standpoint. that they have to watch out. And like when Joel Klatt was talking about it this week, presidents are worried about liability. And so there's just all of that rolled into one. Well, yeah, that's true. So the number one question I have, and you and I don't have the answer this, but it is interesting to me. The Intel, the ACC and the Big 12 and the SEC are getting, because everybody has their own medical experts. They have, they have them for a reason. It's significantly different than what the PAC 12 and the Big Ten are being told. Now, does that mean that a liberal doctor is going to have a different philosophy than a conservative
Starting point is 00:49:25 of doctor, the answer is absolutely, Ross, yes, it can. You might have just, you might have hired a batch of doctors or medical experts for your own conference that have, that have a philosophical point. Because let's face it, Ross, what this is is a microcosm of America. There is a large segment of America that don't believe in the mask, that don't want to hear about the number of tests and COVID and how it, all this has stopped our economy and everything. And then there's another, there's another part of our country that says, that we're not doing enough. And the part of this is because we're not wearing our mask
Starting point is 00:49:59 and because we're not social distancing. So, frankly, college football took, got into our regular lives and said, well, I'm going to pull some of this in there. And that's why we're all screwed up is because we don't have a consensus. Well, I don't think there's doctors out there saying, you know what? A bunch of a hundred guys crashing into each other on Saturday is totally fine and everything's
Starting point is 00:50:18 okay. I think they're saying that. I think they're saying that it can be mitigated if you, I don't think that there's a, Much of a different message from ACC to Big Ten doctors. I think there's a different message. I'm sorry, yeah. I think there's a message is from the staff to say we can test, we can enforce these rules,
Starting point is 00:50:36 and we're going to do it, and we should be able to do this safely rather than the other. Like there's not some doctor who, I don't think, that says, you know what, Trump says it's okay, I think it's okay. He's not taking his advice from Donald Trump. I think they all think it's dangerous, and it's a question of how much can we limit this if there is an outbreak because eventually there will there has to be wanted something. So our conference, yeah, our conference can properly test.
Starting point is 00:51:01 Yes. We can afford it. We'll do out the money. Right. And we will do the proper protocols. We will social distance. We will wear masks when we're not when we're supposed to. Probably going to make the player sign waivers.
Starting point is 00:51:11 And then, but if it's time to hit somebody and time to go cover somebody, we're going to conduct business as usual because you can't play football only 50%. You can't go out there and half asset because that's the most dangerous thing you can possibly do. even flag football I mean somebody's got to handle the flags there's just no way to do it
Starting point is 00:51:28 it's just yeah I'm glad you brought that up my son is a at Texas Tech we're leaving Friday to go take him up there he works for the rec department and he was refereeing flag football games and oh really and I'm thinking son I don't want you to lose that job a tradition of referees in your family
Starting point is 00:51:43 did you like did a tear roll down your cheek when you found out that your son was going to be a referee because you are mister I mean you were a softball umpire getting cussed out on the fields of Minnesota. Well, that was because the guy had a thing on his ankle. So the St. Paul police. Yeah, that's how you know not to mess with him, Matt. That's what I knew it was time for me to end my college, my softball wreck umpiring career. Is that a bat or is that a lead
Starting point is 00:52:07 pipe in his hand? Like, you need to get out of there, Matt. So you have to be proud of your son going into the refereeing tradition of the Thomas family. Well, I told him, I said it's easy money. Yeah. I said it's fun. You're going to get exercise. You're going to yell that. If you can get past that But you got a punch his chance of meeting a girl there that way Oh, that's true Don't you think? I guess
Starting point is 00:52:29 Oh, I met lots of girls You're gonna toss a girl out of the game And then go talk to her? No, but you don't toss him out of here He refereed basketball up there He didn't toss anybody out He said he gave away He had to do one technical
Starting point is 00:52:39 Because he had to because two guys were fighting So you take it easy on the girl You don't call her fouls or something No, you say You don't call her for pass interference on the flag football Well, here's what happens The game is over and it's late And you don't want her on the softball field by herself
Starting point is 00:52:51 At 1130 He said you need to ride home. And umpire is the last one there. Well, you know what happens, too, is after these games, they go out for drinks. Yeah. And they're going to buy the umpire beers because they're going to want some favorable calls.
Starting point is 00:53:02 I think it's a genius move on his part. I'm proud of the boy. He's a junior now in college? He's a junior now? Can you believe that? Oh, we're getting old, Matt. I don't know. Actually, you just made my stomach hurt.
Starting point is 00:53:14 He's a junior in college now? Yes, he is. I remember when he was a little Cam Thomas. We moved here in 2010. He was in the fifth grade. and now Carly, who's my seventh grader, is 5-7. I'm going to start openly weeping now for my children. 5-7, that's good.
Starting point is 00:53:29 You can get her some, I don't know, what makes kids grow. No, no, no, no. I don't know. I don't know. She's good. She's playing volleyball. She's good. Five, ten, six-foot, she'd be upset.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Because I think girls that are like six-two, six-three have uncomfortable lives. Do they not? Harder to meet dudes that way? Yeah, well, then she can meet a very rich and famous, very tall NBA player. Brandon, how tall are you? Like, five, nine. You're not dating any girls six feet above. are you? She's not dating him.
Starting point is 00:53:53 That's true. I'm sorry. I don't know. I think I can get past it. I'm sure you can. We'll come back, take some phone calls, and we get to Joseph Torto at the bottom of the hour. U of H News of the day, unfortunately, the passing of Bill Yolman today at the age of 92 years old. One of the greatest college football coaches ever, in fact, member of the College Football Hall of Fame. 11 on Sports Talk 790 with a message here for hoops, basketball goals, and sporting equipment. speaking for hoops since camera was in the fifth grade. That's how cool that young fellow is,
Starting point is 00:54:25 and that's how cool the folks are at Hoops Basketball Goals. Starting point is 00:55:33 We'll check in on the college football beat with Joseph Torte from The Chronicle in about 12 minutes from now. Rockets tonight. Actually, late this afternoon. It's an afternoon delight. Back to back, Matt. Waxler and Clayton get another day off? Jeez.
Starting point is 00:55:50 All they do is get time off. Grinders. We have two Astor Day games next week. Oh, well, yesterday they did. They did about two and a half. half-hour show yesterday. Did they? We're doing a two-hour show yesterday and had none as well.
Starting point is 00:56:02 But I worked. Yeah. You're calling me. And you work, too. Yeah, that's right. You put together the amazing Emmy Award-winning launch pad. And then I did a nightcap as well. How was a nightcap?
Starting point is 00:56:12 Oh, it was fantastic. Perfect. 713-212-5-790. So realistically, what do we think college football is going to look like? And do we believe when the ACC and the Big 12 and the SEC are like, yeah, we're going go? Are they going to pull the plug a week later? Because let me tell you a set raw so a week ago, we thought
Starting point is 00:56:28 the Big Ten was doing their bit because they were announcing their conference-only schedule. We knew the Pact 12 was going to do their bit because they were announcing their conference-only schedule. Let me answer that question was another question. That's the Matt Thomas Way. How many days did it take for there to be an outbreak in baseball? You mean from the start of the season to where it was? Four? I think it was like three days.
Starting point is 00:56:50 They started on Thursday. There was an outbreak by Sunday. However many days you want to call that. How many days is it going to take for there's an outbreak in college football? hopefully zero you think there's going to be zero outbreaks can I pray for it I mean you can
Starting point is 00:57:04 I don't want to go without college football this year I will I'm saying if there is an outbreak how will it be handled if there's an outbreak on a team you got everybody's got if what if 10 players on a team does I think we just go on business as usual then I think you postpone the game
Starting point is 00:57:19 and you hope to catch it up on the back end okay which in theory I think is what the NFL's thinking about too I think they're going to If there are multiple outbreaks, is there a chance they would cancel the season or they just keep marching forward like baseball has? Don't you think they're taking the lead off of baseball right now? I think so. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:39 How many games the Cardinals play? Five. They didn't stop them. They're three and two or two and three. I forget. Are they still in first place? No, they're not. Are they still eligible for the playoffs?
Starting point is 00:57:51 By winning percentage? I don't know. Everybody else has played 16 games. Oh, they're two and three. So, yeah. What's the division look like right now? Cubs are 11 and 3. So they've played 14 and the Cardinals have played 5.
Starting point is 00:58:02 Yes. So is that fair? No. No. They're taking a lead off of Major League Baseball. They're saying we'll get those games in or at least many as we can because we can. Daniel in Lubbock at 120 on 7-90. Daniel, what's the good word?
Starting point is 00:58:16 MT. Long time now here. You used to be in Jersey Village now here in lovely, flat, dusty Lubbock. Nice. I'll be in your city on Friday. Man, I was just hearing that. had a call in, make sure you get the Lubbock tour. You got to go see the Paray Dog Town, the Buddy Holiday Museum, and then the Amazon drop-off locker store.
Starting point is 00:58:38 Those are all the big gets in Lubbock? I've got to be honest with a... I'm going to go get a hamburger with a great fried cheeses. What's the place called? Spankies. Spankies. Yeah, there's a lot of restaurants over here. A lot of restaurants.
Starting point is 00:58:54 The best time to come if you're going to come to a visit to your son is probably the the first week of November when the yoga pant game is strong. Oh, morning. So this didn't get creepy all of a sudden. Yeah, it did. It got very creepy. Well, it's you, M.T. What do you expect?
Starting point is 00:59:10 That's right. Daniel, thanks for the phone call, friend. I appreciate you to dial it in. I will say this. I have been in Lovick four or five times in my life, and obviously a lot in the last couple of years. It's West Texas. Have you been to Lovic before?
Starting point is 00:59:22 Never. It's very West Texas, but it's way more. I'll say way more cosmopolitan I thought it was going to be. Mm-hmm. They do have an Amazon locker, so things are going pretty well for them. But I mean, there's nice malls. They've got, you know, cheesecake factory, I think. Okay.
Starting point is 00:59:43 I think they do now. They do have a P.F. Chang's. But it's still, it's a college. And the Buddy Holly Museum. It's just. And yoga pants, apparently. Well, most good-looking campuses have the yoga pan game going on. The only thing it pisses me off, frankly, is it's just so freaking far.
Starting point is 01:00:00 Nine hours? Nine hours. And we're carrying a trailer with us, so that probably adds a little extra time to it. Well, at least it doesn't get windy out in West Texas. You'll be fine. Now I'm depressed this thing about the drive. So we get up in the morning, we go to Lubbock. I mean, we go through Waco first.
Starting point is 01:00:17 And that seems, that's okay. Three, three and a half hours. And then we go for another three, three and a half hours in the middle of nowhere. And we're like, okay, this is just part of the journey. Right. We get to Abilene. We're like, okay, home stretch. And then look at how many miles Abilene is to the love it? It's like 150.
Starting point is 01:00:31 Oh, God. Well, the longest road trip I ever went to was this past year. I went to Big Ben for, it was like eight hours, eight, nine hours. We had to go up to Austin to get my brother. To me, I mean, we just listen to satellite radio. I wasn't that bad. Well, that's what we'll do. And, of course, listen to you on Friday between noon and three, because we'll still be in the car.
Starting point is 01:00:48 On Friday? Oh, yeah. Okay. You're going to call in? You going to give us a road trip report? There's a possibility. Mattie's road trip. Report. All I'm saying is that
Starting point is 01:00:56 when I'm flying home, I get mad when I'm on the plane because I'm like, this took an hour and a half or the other trip that I just did coming up there is nine. Damn you Southwestern United for not having those airfares reasonable for both ways. Well, the flights aren't bad now, right?
Starting point is 01:01:12 I paid a hundred bucks on the way home, so that wasn't bad. It wasn't bad at all. Are they still no middle seats? It's regional jets seats. They're two and two, so that's a good question. Is there going to be anybody in your row, coughing, coughing on you? I don't know. It's Five o'clock on a Sunday night? I think I got the swine flu off of a plane in 2009.
Starting point is 01:01:28 You're not just making things up. Well, I got the swine flu, and I think it was from a plane ride. How sick were you? Were you sicker with that, or were you sicker with COVID? It was pretty much the flu. It was like if the flu's a seven, it was an eight. Wow, ATX hobo girl. At least sports RV isn't driving.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Might take 15. It's not a bad drive. Are you a slow driver? I've talked about on air before being a grand... I drive like a grandma. Now, on a road trip, I do not drive like a grandma. Now, if I'm... Look, if I need to get a...
Starting point is 01:01:54 get to my, you know, going to my mom's house and it's 30 minutes away, I'm not going to drive 80, so I get there in 27 minutes and get a speeding ticket. Now, if we're out in the open road, and we're trying to make some time on a road trip, then I'll ramp it up. I'm selective with when I, and if I'm late for something, I will drive like a bad out of hell. But most of the time, if I'm just making a regular trip somewhere, I will drive five above in the cruise control in the slow lane. I don't even know you anymore. What's wrong with that? It's practical. You How many speeding tickets I've ever gotten to my life, Matt? Zero.
Starting point is 01:02:27 How many accidents? Zero. The calls by me? Zero. That's, you know what? I would, I'll tip my cap to you on that one. Yeah, I'm not out here ramming in 18. I was like you, Matt. I was in a zero-zero category when I was 16. That's as far as it went. Sorry, Matt.
Starting point is 01:02:45 Okay. So what else we want to get to? We got Joseph coming up next. Oh, Rockets, by the way. We do have the lineups for today's game. Really? No, Daniel House again, with the, sore big toe. We all have sore big toes. Eric Gordon's going to play between 20 and 25 minutes.
Starting point is 01:03:03 He will start today. Ben McLemore will start. Westbrook is out. Harden is back in. So is Hardin Tucker, Covington, Gordon, and Maclemore, the starting five today. Wonderful. I'll write that down. See, I'm... Because the starting lineups are brought to you by El Tempo Cantina. I'm basically writing your script for the Rockets Launchpad, which starts in 35... Goza. Cala Momento. Okay, that's enough from you. 713-212-5-7-9. 713, 212, 5, 790.
Starting point is 01:03:28 Here's something that Clay Travis brought up, but it was a final kicker. This is not about politics. So Clay just treated out that a listener of ours said, in the state of Iowa, it is safe for Iowa state to play football. It is not safe for Iowa to play football. How crazy is that?
Starting point is 01:03:48 Two teams, same state, two different conferences. One says it's okay to play. One says it's not. So maybe the question would be Why is Iowa City more dangerous than Ames? Answer that question for me. So the bubble should be, I mean, that's nonsensical.
Starting point is 01:04:05 It doesn't matter. I mean, the bubble, the conferences have to worry about their entire conferences. It's not the Iowa sports conference. In theory, that's correct. But it is kind of a funny note that one team in the state can do its thing, and another one can't. Well, it's at all or nothing at all. I mean, I don't think they can opt out.
Starting point is 01:04:22 I know Nebraska would like to opt out. I know Nebraska fans, bitch, I mean, I guess Omaha radio today is going crazy over this. Should we pipe in some Omaha radio? No. But the fact of the matter is, you made your bed. You got to line it, right? When you join the Big Ten, you don't get to follow Big Ten rules only when it's good for you. You have to live with them good or bad.
Starting point is 01:04:43 And if I'm the Big 12 or anybody else, I'm not inviting you. Now, if you're looking to play non-conference opponent, that's fine. But I'm not going to give you any gate revenue. I'm not going to give you tickets. I'm not going to give you television revenue. This is what happens. And oh, by the way, the Nebraska president was on the call, I'm sure, with the other big 10 presidents and probably had a loud voice in there, right? No, they put it to a vote, I guess, right?
Starting point is 01:05:07 The matter is, the reason why Nebraska, Ross, to be brutally honest, they're not doing it because they're worried about playing football. They're worried about the fact that Nebraska football and fall athletics shuts down that state, shuts down that institution, shuts down Omaha, shuts down Lincoln. A couple hundred million dollars. Gonso. That's why there is so much brushback on this. It's because Scott Frost, anybody associated with Nebraska, knows the economic impact of Cornhusker athletics to that state. And that's why they're really complaining.
Starting point is 01:05:38 And I'm okay with that, but I don't even think they're hiding it. Yeah, they want their kids to play. But they also realize that having those kids play means that they get to keep their campus alive and thriving. Now it's shut down and maybe you're going to lose some non-REB sports over this. It's tough. It's just there's no right answer. That's the month there's make, that's why you're having these conferences in college football who are just so disjointed and not under one umbrella. That's why they're making different decisions because you could go either way on that.
Starting point is 01:06:05 And it's just, it's very, very difficult. I'm glad I'm not in the position to have to make these decisions for not only the athletes, but for like you said, all the people who are around there and whose lives depend and whose salaries and their families depend on these sports going on. One thing you can control is the decision to lower your rates on your home policy. do that with TGS insurance. Text the word money, M-O-N-E-W at 23-23-23-23, and you can start the process right now. The average 7-90 listeners saving almost $900 in her home policy, a lot of you have saved over $1,000 and then some. But texting the word money to 23-23-23-23 gets it all started right now.
Starting point is 01:06:45 M-O-N-E-Y to 23-23-23 and start saving big on your home policy right now with T-G-S insurance, You'll text that. The last few of your address, you'll text that. And then 15 seconds later, you're going to get a quote that I think is going to save you a lot of money. Text money, M-O-N-E-Y to 23, 23, and starting to enjoying great coverage and lower prices with TGS insurance. This is Cougars head coach Dana Holgerson. Matt's kind of like Shasta without putting on a costume. He's a big old...
Starting point is 01:07:16 The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 790. And it's time now. for our Cougar Update, it is presented to you by the Joint Chiropractor of the University of Houston Athletics. Right now, you can get a new patient special, $29 for a consultation, exam, and adjustment, all the details at the joint.com. Joseph Dorte covers the Cougars in college football for the Houston Chronicle with us here on the show. Joseph, unfortunately, we visit with you today having word that Bill Yulman has passed away at the age of 92. I told him it was my first partner on Cougar Radio and was a sweet general. man and a great football coach, legendary.
Starting point is 01:07:57 Have you been able to get some reaction from people in around your world on the passing of Coach Yeoman? Yeah, Matt, an incredibly sad day for the University of Houston family. And really, you don't even have to be a member of that family to appreciate and really respect what Bill Yeoman did as a man and as a coach in college football from everything from helping to integrate the South with the signing of the first African-American of a players at the University of Houston to just, you know, what he did with them, ushering them from independent to a dominant stretch to begin their running the Southwest Conference.
Starting point is 01:08:34 But, yeah, a lot of people reflecting today that he was a players coach. You know, Leroy Borell just posted that, you know, he wasn't his coach, but everybody on campus felt like he was. It didn't matter what sport you were in. And Bill Rood Yoman had that type of reach. So a really, really sad day, you know, he had looked. like things were, had turned a corner. He had the, uh, the COVID 19 bout a few weeks ago that he got cleared from, but, uh, you know, he was 92. Talked to his son, Bill Jr. a little while
Starting point is 01:09:05 ago said that, you know, his dad just had been in declining help. And it was a many, many things that eventually, uh, led to his, uh, his passing today around noon, uh, lunchtime. Well, again, uh, thoughts and prayers to the entire family and, uh, and with all sincerity, one of the great people in Houston sports history, Bill Yulman, at the age of 92 passing away today. All right, let's get to some other things. First and foremost, four Houston Cougar fans that are listening, and for that matter, Rice fans, or anybody that's not associated with the Power Five schools that maybe have our fans. What do we know about the American and Conference USA?
Starting point is 01:09:41 Because obviously Houston Rice are in those leagues. Where do those conferences stand right now as we speak here at 135? Well, the American has said they plan to move forward. So kind of piggybacking off of the the Southeastern Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference of the Big 12th announcement today. The American plans to go business as usual and get ready for the season. Now, on Conference USA, they're meeting this afternoon. I haven't really heard which way they're leaning, but, you know, you look, they had Old Dominion, who was a member who decided that they were going to opt out this.
Starting point is 01:10:17 season. Many think Conference USA will remain. Then you have the Sunbelt Conference, which includes Texas State. They're going to play. So right now, you know, there's 53 out of the 130 that we know of that will not play football this year. But in terms of locally with the FBS schools, Houston, right now is set to play. And right now they have a 10-game schedule. And Rice, who has lost most of its non-conference schedule, and as part of conference Tuesday, is right now preparing to play as well. Is there a date that meets both Houston and Rice
Starting point is 01:10:54 so they can play that Bayou Bucking game after all? Have you now looked that further into it at this point? You know, Matt, right now there isn't. And now there's some possibilities of late in, you know, that December slot right before the championship game, if they decide to push the championship game back, at least in the American that they could play. But there is it.
Starting point is 01:11:16 You know, originally I thought that that September 12th date might match up since Houston had lost Washington State and Army was likely not to come to Houston, but that doesn't fit. And you just go down the list. So I think both schools are certainly looking to keep that game going somehow, but it may just be a matter not being able to fit it in. You know, Houston's other date would be October 16th where they have a trip to B-Y schedule. Rice, I believe, plays that weekend. So again, you know, it could be a matter of just
Starting point is 01:11:48 not being able to find an open date that works for both schools unless you fit it in, sometimes into an early December slot. Ross and I were discussing this a little while ago. We don't believe at the end of the day that there are doctors in the ACC, the Big 12, and the SEC that are philosophically tremendously different than what you would have from doctors and specialists from the Pac-12 and the Big Ten. So you tell me, and this is a your opinion on this one, why is one set of conferences ready to go forward on this, and why are two saying thanks but no thanks? Well, because at the end of the day, Matt, you have, you know, you have the 10 conferences
Starting point is 01:12:23 of the group of five and the Power Five, and no clear leader. I mean, it's not like the professional leagues that have a commissioner. You do have commissioners, but there's just, there's 10 different opinions who also rely on the input from, you know, 10 board of, you know, excuse me, governors or presidents or chancellors, whatever you want to call them. So at the end of the day, everybody's making their own decisions. Now, granted, these schools are talking daily or these conferences are talking daily, but there's just no general consensus. Everybody has their own task force, their own medical advisory group. They have their own set of safety protocols. And that's just a
Starting point is 01:13:06 recipe for not being on the same page or at least. And then you're talking about different regions of the country. Some people have been hit harder in other regions than others. And I was told today that, like, for instance, in the South Easter conference, some of them may have different data or looking at different type of testing and information than, say, the PAC 12. So it's just, you know, you've had five months to look this over and figure things out. and the lack of not having a leader and the NCAA really not being able to step in or at least not being able to do as much as that some of the pro leagues would do has really hurt them.
Starting point is 01:13:43 And that's why you're getting different opinions on a lot of different subjects. Joseph Twartay covers the University of Houston and College football for the Chronicle here on the Matt Thomas show. So tell me what Dana has done the last couple of weeks and what is expected from the school in the next couple of weeks, provided that everybody, you know, relatively speaking, behaves themselves and doesn't, attract the virus from someone? Well, they're testing. That's for one. And that was a point that when they started a volunteer workout in June, and it led to, they're shutting it down after 12 days is new. So that, you know, for about the past month or so, they have been having the testing. We don't know the numbers, but that's one thing. Now, they're also on the field
Starting point is 01:14:25 and in the weight room doing OTAs. There has been no official practice. We're told that that could begin possibly on Monday of next week. But you're looking at because the schedule has now been pushed back. So instead of beginning on September 3rd, they're beginning on September 19th. They have over 30 days to go until the season begins. So there's not necessarily that rush. They did get halfway through their spring, which is a lot more than a lot of other schools did. So there's not a big rush.
Starting point is 01:14:54 And, you know, they're kind of just waiting to make sure that I think to get past this this really hectic week of so many things happening. Will they play? Won't they play? And now the things will hopefully settle, they can kind of get into that preseason camp regimen starting next week. This may be more for Big 12 stuff, but in college football in general,
Starting point is 01:15:14 how much scrambling are you seeing with teams trying to fell out of schedule, especially if you've lost one or two non-conference opponents? I know the Big 12 is going to just stay with just home, one non-conference game at home. but generally speaking, maybe like schools in American are looking to fill out three or four. What are you hearing about how often ADs are visiting about trying to schedule something here in the next 30 to 45 days? Well, I think you're going to have a few, but when you look at the way the schedules are set up, a lot of these schools are going to be able to save that one game.
Starting point is 01:15:47 For instance, Texas will likely play U-TEP. You know, Oklahoma State has Tulsa. I'm told Baylor will play incarnate Word. You look at Kansas State, I believe, added Arkansas State today. So there's a lot of options. Oklahoma had a game already said before this. So I don't think it's having to rush to fill anything. I think what you'll see really ramp up in the next few weeks is the safety protocols,
Starting point is 01:16:13 the very important stuff that they said today in terms of what a game week will look like with the three COVID tests. You know, you'll have if a player test positive, you have the electrocardiogram. the cardiac MRI, the troponin test, you know, a bunch of things that are safeguarding because there's been that that link possibly between the myocarditis and COVID, especially with athletes. So I think the safety protocols will be front and center before these games, but I don't see any problems right now because they have released the conference schedule, and it's just kind of crossing the T's and dotting the eyes on getting that one conference game that each team will host
Starting point is 01:16:53 during that first few weeks of when the season began. You threw out some majorly big words. I applaud you for being able to pronounce them. I don't know if you know what they mean, but you did a great job. I absolutely know what each one of them means from, unfortunately, from personal history.
Starting point is 01:17:07 Wow. All right. Lastly, again, this is opinion only. Nebraska's obviously out there bitching and moaning about this. What do you tell them? So sorry? Or do you say, you know what? Go beg the Big Ten to let you play an independent slate.
Starting point is 01:17:21 The problem is I don't know where they're television money's going to go because that that money is distributed equally throughout the Big Ten. And oh, by the way, I can't imagine another conference wanting to give you any money to play games on television this year. Right. Nebraska is basically going to have to be the little kid who's told to go to the corner and they pouts and they pounce their feet on the floor the entire way there. But there's nothing that's going to happen. You know, the Big 12 was asked today whether or not Nebraska has reached out. just hearing that is odd because, you know, this is hopefully a one-season situation with the cancellation for some of these conferences.
Starting point is 01:17:59 But, I mean, realistically, what can you do? I mean, I can understand if you're a team like BYU maybe that doesn't have or in Loder Dane that has the potential to join a conference. But, I mean, they sort of made their bed. Now they have to sleep in it. They left when they did. And, you know, you could talk until you're blue in the face about. outfits and should they have ever, you know, been a part of that realignment, whether it was Rutgers, Maryland, or Missouri and the SEC. What's done is done. So I don't see that moving anywhere. I just
Starting point is 01:18:29 can't see the commissioners. Kevin Warren of the Big Ten allowing that to even happen. So I think it's a non-discussion, but it is fun to hear, especially when we've all been begging for some type of sports news or rumors for the last five and six months. Great stuff. As always, friend, thank you very much the time. I look forward to reading your work on The Chronicle website and of course the hard copy at your local newsstands. Thank you, Matt. Anytime, buddy. You got it.
Starting point is 01:18:53 Joseph Dwarte from the Houston Chronicle. Follow him on Twitter for the latest news on college football and especially the University Houston. And this Cougar update today and this week has been brought to you by the joint chiropractor, the official chiropractor of U.H. athletics. 144 on the Matt Thomas show. We'll update you and just be frustrated for the Astros. And a final segment of this edition of the Matt Thomas show, Rockets Launchpad,
Starting point is 01:19:17 coming up in 15 minutes here. on Sports Talk 790 with a message here for cold, refreshing and delicious. Coors Light. It is the world's most refreshing beer. It's made to chill. It's a company that obviously started in Colorado, but when they thought to themselves, hey, we're going to go national. Where should we go first?
Starting point is 01:19:33 They went to the state of Texas because they know that we here in Texas love our beers. We love to drink them responsibly, and that's why Coors Light's got to be on your grocery list, whether you stop by the liquor store or you go by your local grocery store. Grab yourself a 12-pack and enjoy the remaining days of summer. enjoying that delicious cold refreshing Corr's life. Maddie Nation. Things are going to start happening to me now.
Starting point is 01:19:56 You made it. I'm somebody now. More Matt Thomas. Now. 148 on the Matt Thomas show. We are about 12 minutes away from Rossville, Real hosting the Rockets launch pad. 230.
Starting point is 01:20:20 It'll be, I think, Adam Clinton with a network pregame, and then Craig and Adam will have the call of the Rockets and the Pacers. James Hardin returns after missing yesterday. Russ played yesterday and was rusty and will not play today in a back-to-back. Eric Gordon is scheduled to play, and Daniel House is not expected to go. Victor Oladipo will go today for the Indiana Pacers. 713-212-5-790.
Starting point is 01:20:48 7-13-212-5-790. If you missed our Dusty Baker conversation, it's good. You're going to mess around. Still spins positively, as most manager. It was, as he should. He knows, well, it's not a long season so much here, but he understands. Baseball's always another day. That's one of the interesting things about it.
Starting point is 01:21:08 You can lose 11 to 2 one day, and you know what? New game in the next day. You're fine. Get it out of your mind. Yeah, you get no hit one day, and the next day you hit four home runs. It could happen. The base runners' mistakes have got to stop, though. This is supposed to be a smarter team than that.
Starting point is 01:21:22 That's been one of their issue. Al-Tubey. Honestly, it's been an issue. Altubey's aggressiveness on the base paths has been an issue for years. I don't even think it's aggressiveness. I think it's, ill time. I mean, he gets picked off a lot. That means he's not reading something or has terrible instincts. There's a lot of times he'll go first or third when he shouldn't or try to go for a triple when he shouldn't. He's always, to me, he sometimes, and a lot of times when
Starting point is 01:21:43 he's pressing at the plate, he gets a little too aggressive. Garrett Stubbs trying to steal third. Oh gosh. I don't know what's going on with that one. You could hear to Dusty's voice that he wasn't And the strange part was that straw went at the same time thinking maybe that was a double steel call from the dugout. And everybody had said, no, Garrett said, I tried to steal that on my own. And then Dusty said, I didn't call that. Yeah, what if there was a rule in baseball you could flip them and then put straw on second as a lead runner? What would that rule be called? The flip?
Starting point is 01:22:12 Yeah. The runner flip. Then I would like, I would be okay with straw trying to steal 30. Honestly, if you're going to, this gimmicky season, why don't you have one runner flip per game? Yeah. You call it a, what does that move called in chess when you swap your, your rook and your igniting or no, when you, uh... I don't play chess.
Starting point is 01:22:32 I have never played before. How about this? If you wanted to make it, you know what you ought to do? You have the Yordon rule. He hits, but somebody else runs for you. Castling, that's right. You got a castle, Matt. You can call it castling.
Starting point is 01:22:44 They swap them. Okay. Well, how about the rule where Yordon hits and Miles Straw runs? Oh, yeah. He's, okay. The designated hitter gets. a designated runner. I like that.
Starting point is 01:22:55 I want to say we did that as kids. I don't know if that's true or not, but it feels like it's a ghost runner. You know, they are, well, they added ghost runners in extra inning. So you get a ghost runner on second. No, gross runners are not that. Ghost runners, when there's nobody there. I know, but it's... And here's the thing.
Starting point is 01:23:10 The ghost runner runs as fast as you do, ironically enough. So if you're slow-ass, like when I was a kid, I was fat, so we didn't have a ghost runner in second, they'd always go to third base for the tag out because I was never at first base at them. They said, hey, we got you. Ghostrunners out. Damn. That's not very nice.
Starting point is 01:23:24 It's a truth, though. I got a lot of pent-up frustration for my time as a youth. So you were like a Daniel Vogelbach back in the day. Yeah. Or maybe Pablo Sandoval. He's big. Were you the Kung Fu Panda of the Katie area? Again, I consider myself sneaky quick.
Starting point is 01:23:46 I don't believe anybody else did. Well, Cecil Fielder was sneaky quick for a big guy. Well, you know who didn't move his son. His son couldn't move. Well, he was all right. Like who is sneaky? Who's fat but moves around pretty well? I mean, NBA players would be the example of that.
Starting point is 01:24:01 For instance, Charles Barkley was always fat. But he moved. That's true. I'm trying to think of baseball. Jack was very, he had a really good feat for someone who has big as he was. Yeah, but the problem is we got to separate ourselves from basketball because that's the core to the sport is being able to run up and the court. There's probably some de-de-tackles out there.
Starting point is 01:24:20 Let's go to baseball. Is there a fat? Oh, Aaron Donald. Aaron Donald's big and he's amazingly quick and fast. Okay, but that's football. I'm talking about baseball. Is there a fat baseball player that moves faster than he looks? Kung Fu Panda Pablo Sandoval.
Starting point is 01:24:35 Yeah, but I think he's super. Back in the day, he's old now. He's super fat. How old is he now? He's got to be way old. Like, does any catcher, like, really run pretty decently for a fact? I mean, because a lot of them are not fat anymore, but there are a few, like Castro, Jason Castro of the Angels, former Astro is not fat.
Starting point is 01:24:49 Yeah, Santerol is 34 now. Back in his heyday, though, that's why he got the nickname Kung Fu Panan. because he was quick. What do they list him as weight-wise? This had to be like 2014 weight. I'll just put Pablo Sandval, wait. Maybe there's no such thing. Maybe there's no such thing as a fat 10-268.
Starting point is 01:25:07 Fat base runner. I think his guts about 268. Yeah. But Garrett Stubbs, I never want you trying to steal third base ever again. That's the point of the conversation. I don't, yeah, I don't care how smart of a base runner you believe you are or how bad you're willing to help your team. because maybe in the back of his mind he was thinking, Ross,
Starting point is 01:25:25 I can't get to home on a base hit that I need that extra 90 feet. Well, if you can't get to home on a base hit, you can't steal third either. I agree. Come on, come on, Garrett. But Garrett maybe is overestimating how fast he is because he did get put out in left field
Starting point is 01:25:42 in that extra inning game against the A's last week. He had that nice catch. He did. Sometimes the nice catch looks good because you're a late getting over there, though. But maybe that gave him some false security of his lack there of speed. What were the statcast numbers on that sprint from Garrett Stubbs?
Starting point is 01:25:58 We need that. How many feet per second was he running? Did you hear, I don't know if you heard, this is Jeff Blum was on the broadcast yesterday. He keeps up six different baseball websites during their broadcast. And one of them is the geek related one. Like he'd say, well, this one says that, you know, the ball left. This one says it had this much detractors. on it. I mean,
Starting point is 01:26:26 I'll use it. When a pitcher comes in, I'll look them up on fan graphs sometimes. I'll be honest with you. And then I'll bring up Stackass as well. I love basketball play by a play because I wouldn't have time to look up six webcasts, or six websites during our podcast. Baseball, you got a little extra time. You do. And another pitching change. Guess I'll browse some six websites.
Starting point is 01:26:42 Because look, there are metrics that are involved in basketball. Daryl Morey is the president of the metrics fan club. They're not in live time, though, like baseball. But they're not, you're not metricting. Is that a word metricing? You're not metering during a game. I think I just added a word. I like metricing better.
Starting point is 01:26:58 Metricing is not a word. But I'll go, okay, metering it is. I don't know if metering's a word. But the point is, you don't do that in the middle of the game. You take the data after the game is over. I don't think you're doing it in real time. Measuring. That's what it is.
Starting point is 01:27:11 No, I think metering is better. We're idiots. We are idiots, but I like to, it sounds better. Okay. I think making up words is part of our charm. And we just did that right there. All right. Let's let's set the rest of the day. You've got Rockets Launchpad here. Yes.
Starting point is 01:27:29 Rockets game broadcast. I've got a fantastic guest coming up on the show. I got to talk about Charles Jewry first. Oh, that's true. Go ahead. All right. Well, and loan. And also, I'll have Astros on deck at 5 over on KTRH today, which will really amuse the Michael Berry listeners. Well, yeah, they want to hear Michael Barry talk about Kamala Harris, and they're just going to hear you. You know what? Try to get a couple of political opinions in the on-deck show. talking about Garrett Stubbs or Michael Berry talking about Camilla Harris.
Starting point is 01:27:58 A Garrett Stub blunder, just as big as picking Kamala Harris as your VP. You should do that, something like that. I don't want to irritate them anymore. They're going to hate me in about three hours. A word for Shaw's Jewelry at the Corner West Grand Montrose. They've been there since 1966.
