Because if you put 10 to 15,000 people at NRG this weekend and the Texans are down 28 to nothing, that fan who was there for the Denver game, he's going to be able to have like a basically a five-minute conversation with Bill O'Brien. Yeah, you can head home at halftime. You suck. You know, I mean, it's, and we'll make our picks officially tomorrow, but it's not going to be pretty, is it? well you already have the gut feeling that they're going to lose there was no fight in the dodgers podre series let it be known that you are you are one for two in your gut feelings yeah but that wasn't

Your gut feeling may not be working out here so swell about the games next week, not meeting anything. Look, man, the Astros don't even need to win that many to get to that point. I'm almost betting more on the Mariners losing, assuming they play.

That's true. Could you imagine the Astros flying all the way to Seattle and then not playing? Maybe that's the Mariners best moves to not play games and let the Astros keep losing? God, they are gaining ground that way. Ironically enough. So yeah, the Astros are going to finish up. They've got, what, one more game with Texas, and then they've got three with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Yes. And then they're on the road for four in Seattle, no, three in Seattle, four in Texas to close out the year. Beautiful. Nervous? No. You're not nervous at all. I'm not nervous because if they lose,

if they don't make it, if you can't beat out the Seattle freaking Mariners. Or Texas Rangers for that matter. the Texas Rangers, for that matter. You don't deserve it. That's fine. It's a make or miss league. It's a winner-lose league. It's a play the games. I understand it's a short season. You had all these injuries, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Be good enough to be better than the Mariners of the Rangers. If you don't make the playoffs, you didn't deserve it. Play the games. Let's see what you got. See, I think it's going to be a huge embarrassment if the Astros don't make the playoffs. It's going to be a national story. I mean, I mean, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.

You don't know how sobering yesterday's loss was? Kyle Gibson throws his first shutout of his entire career and just his third complete game. guy's been in the big leagues. I want to say 7, 8, 9 years somewhere in that.

I mean, he's been around. He's gone that long. He gets the win yesterday. That's just his second of the year. Now granted, it's only a 60-game season. But after allowing four hits, no runs, he walks three and strikes out, what, nine? His ERA, after a complete game,

nine-inning shutout is 5.18. That's how bad Kyle Gibson has been for the Rangers this year and how bad the Astros offense was yesterday. And on the other end, Lance McCullors lowered his to 4.87. Well, Lance McCullors, home lance, is amazing.

It's pretty good. No moisture in Arizona. In five starts at Minamade Park this year, Lance McCullors, 3 and 0 with a 142 ER So if he's 3-0 in Houston with a 142 ERA and his overall ERA is nearly five, we're not going to look up as Rory R. We don't have to know.

We don't know. We can move on. We can move on. So here's the problem, Rossi. Springer, look, one for four. It's okay. Al-Tube is back. Thank goodness he is.

But he looks like he is, you know, two more strikeouts, like he won the ninth inning yesterday. one for three raised the raised up the average for him significantly. He's up to 221. He's almost to

Adam Everett levels. Kyle Tucker has started to He's cooled off significantly. Yeah. Brantley, same way. Breggman's number, Breggman never,

ever got super, super hot. He started, he's been getting on base consistently the whole season. He started to heat up a little bit and then he hit the IL. That's what happened. It seemed like Springer

getting and going, he hit the IL. It's just every time somebody starts to get something going. Carrea, now he cooled off, obviously, from where he was early in the season, then he's got the bone bruised thing and goes over three. But I will say, the lineup as is, is pretty sexy, though, Matt. I think it's going to be okay. It potentially has a chance to be very sexy. The reality is there wasn't a single player in the starting lineup yesterday that had a 300 batting average. Now, that's not everything.

It's about OPS. It's about on base plus slugging. What do you do when the ball cracks and you do get a base hit? What are you doing with it? You're getting on base through walks, whatever. but just if you take it at its most simplistic form, the Astros did not have a single batter in the lineup yesterday, batting 300. That's, it felt like there were four to five guys on a regular basis last year for the Astros doing that.

And then Ryan Presley. Tie game? Not a fan. Yeah. One run game? Not a big super fan. Two or more runs. All right, Ryan, go do your thing.

but was it what Mike who was the guy who was the one that provided the hit yesterday that was the game winner a guy that's been not hitting for crap who had the RBI

it was Gallo Gallo Joey Gallo this year is batting 188 and he plays every day and the Astros lost to Arlington and the silver boot is not secured does that what we're fretting about

I didn't mean to bury the lead on you there no It's troubling, Matt. And yeah, you want to say it's one game, but these one, it's just one game, things kind of pile up. And they've had their standard, what you would figure they're going into the playoffs with lineup the last couple of days. And yesterday, obviously, they got to be better. They got to hit better. They only scored four runs the day before.

So that's five runs in two games with what the lineup is you think you're going to have at the playoffs. Against Texas Rangers pitch. Okay. Can I say this? Can the Astros win the next four? hopefully give them at least Rossi at least three to four games separation from Seattle because here's the thing, if you go to Seattle and you drop all three of them

don't say that. I'm just putting this in perspective here. Then you're going to go to Arlington with, can you say Sphincter on the ear? Yeah, yeah, that's a medical term. Sphinctor. Sphinctor really tight against the Rangers. And it's a bad road team.

It just is. you've got to I mean it's in all sincerity maybe three out of four but you can't out of four to split the next four games you've got to win at least three of these next four games

to give yourself a little bit that deep breath so you don't have to worry about going to Seattle going well if we don't win two out of three we've taken out of our hands so you're saying these are must win games um

and yeah metaphorically speaking sure I like I'm just kind of they will or they won't that's what I said in the first segment And it's, I'm saying, and I don't know. I don't. Like, get it. Exactly.

Get it together or don't. They'll be, nobody's fault with their own. Exactly. But I don't want that. I don't want, I don't want Stephen A. Smith saying, we only talk baseball once a year on this show.

Why am I doing Howard Koso doing Stephen A. Smith? I don't know what that is. The Houston ass shows are an absolutely disgrace. That's the, that's much better. You just do it for me. But I just, I mean, those national jerks never talk baseball

because they just think it's against their rule. to do it, but I can't imagine it's going to be very nice to Astroville when if the Astros don't make the playoffs a week from Sunday. No, they won't. They'll be a national laughing stock, and they can, they somewhat are already. I don't want it. I don't need it. Yeah, I mean, if they're five games under 500 or if they're two games under 500, it's going to make them miss the playoffs. Just get the playoffs. If they make the playoffs and they're out in the first round, it's going to be a national laughing stock. If they make the playoffs around the second round, everyone's going to laugh at them. So they basically have to win the World Series in order to

avoid national disgrace. So I would say this then. Oh, it's an asterisk. It was a gimmick season doesn't count. So they can't win. Well, I'd say to delay the embarrassment. And they should make the playoffs, they went around, they won't be embarrassed. You know, really good teams lose division series all the time. That's not of the ordinary.

But for them to go from being in the World Series to potentially winning Game 7 to not making the playoffs the next year with expanded playoffs, I just can hear the national folks going crazy. It all, it's all coming together. So I was calling to give you my wish list for the Rockets Me off season. Sure. I'm a huge James Hardin fan. We've been blessed to have a generational talent like him. I've always defended him. but after the series and trading Chris Paul and in effect for that trade only getting a couple more wins in the postseason, here's what I want, my wish list, is that we will hire Mike Brown from the Golden State Warriors, the assistant, install the Golden State system, then in effect make everyone available except for Covington and PJ Tucker, make the rest of them available to find the pieces, up-and-coming talent, draftics, whatever,

to play the Golden State system. That's my wish. Well, to play the Golden State system, you're probably going to need two more pure jump shooters. And let me ask you this. Why are you protecting Covington and Tucker? Well, okay, so if I'm just trying to fit the rockets into the Golden State picture,

PJ Tucker is R. Draymond Green. That's true. Also, something I believe, I don't think Golden State before Steve Kerr took over the team and made the changes he did, I don't think those guys were perennial All-Stars World Champions. They won 50 games, but they were not anything close to what they were when they were in the dynasty. You're right. That's right. They're good players, the talented, no doubt. But I think put Clay Thompson on the Phoenix Suns or Steph Curry on another team, and I don't think they've become the guys that they've become future Hall Famers.

So, you know, so PJ Tucker is our Draymond Green. Robert Covington is our Andre Iigodala. And I think you put Eric Gordon out there, you put Westbrook out there, you put Harden out there to find the other pieces. And to me, that would be fun

basketball. And I think winning basketball. I want to hear what you think. All right. We'll do that coming out of the break. Thanks for the phone call. I couldn't I don't imagine the Rock is trading James. I think Russell would be hard to move.

I don't know if Eric would be hard to move or not. I mean, he makes a lot of money, but it's not obscene money for a guy that could start for about, you know, 80% of the teams in the NBA. And then what do you, I mean, what are you trying to get back for him? But that's what is what are you getting to return? If you don't have Eric Gordon, that's, if you want Eric Gordon, that means you don't have a jump shooter. Yeah, it's a jump shooter who is one of your best perimeter defenders. That's, that's Rockets basketball right there. Yeah, I mean, if you're training Eric Gordon, you're training because you think you're going to, you need a legitimate four or five or, you know, really going to change things up.

Yeah, you're not trading Eric Gordon for another jump shooter. You really can't package him with Westbrook because that's a huge. You're never going to have that much money coming back. I've met Cal Ripkin. I have met Roger Clemens before he became an astro when he was just, remember the Blue Jays or the Red Sox or whatever. Liked him a lot. Still, I mean, I still do. I mean, even though obviously things turned out sour in his life in terms of the steroid scandal or whatnot, I'm still a Roger Clemens fan. But Eric Dickerson, I loved Ross when I was a kid watching him at SMU and then go to the Rams where he would beat up the... Matter of fact, when he ran for 2,000 yards, he did it against the Oilers.

That's how he got his 2,000. I didn't know that. Upright, standing, running style, Eric Dickerson. The goggles? Yeah, he'd have been a lot nicer to you if he had offered him a transam under the table. that's basically true. The stories I've heard about the vehicles that were being offered to him, you had to come in at a certain level before you were going to get a visit with Eric Differ.

The story was he got a, he got a transam from A&M and then still spurned them and went to SMU, and they couldn't be like, hey, give us our Trans Am back because they were never supposed to give it to him in the first place. You're right. And there were other schools. He got over on A&M Boosters. There were other schools that were like, what is it going to take?

And they were told this is what it's going to take. And they're like, well, okay, thanks, but no thanks. But I tell you what, you still drive by Sealy, Texas. You go out to the West, you know, San Antonio, you still see the sign of Homer Dickerson. I mean, he's a Hall of Famer. One of the greatest, one of my, I mean, pure watching him, one of my favorite players to watch. Top five Jerry Curl? Yeah, not top five analyst on the sidelines from Monday Football.

Was he bad? I don't even remember that. He did it one, they had him on one sideline and Melissa Stark on the other when it was Dennis Miller in the booth with Al Michaels. Well, that was just a total of boy. of a booth in the first place then. A lot of people, like, by the way, loved Herb Street and Fowler on the Monday night game between Pittsburgh and the Giants.

Look, here's the reality. If you're a good analyst, it doesn't matter what sport you do. Well, I mean, it does a little bit, but it doesn't matter whether it's pro or collegiate. If you're good, you're good. And Kirk Herbstre is one of the greatest analyst in the history of sports. I mean,

doing it for multiple decades now at the top of this game. It shows no signs of of losing his fastball. He's really good. Yeah, I would like them on the Fowler and Herb Street. Good pairing. I would take that on Monday Night Football.

I like Chris Fowler. I don't like him as a play-by-play guy. This doesn't carry the... When I think a plebby-play guy, is I think of the booming voice. Oh, okay. So you're going to hate on a man because it's a voice.

That's not very nice. Well, it's just the truth. I mean Eagle doesn't have a booming voice. But it's authoritative. I guess. was certainly when he's yelling at Mike Fratello. Well, you keep bringing that up all the time. You really, you won't let poor Ian take the loss on that one and just move along.

No, I think it's great. Ian stood up for himself. Congratulations to him. Yeah, big fan of the Eagle family. Ian, his son Noah does the Clipper games. Got to know him a little bit this year. But yeah. But yeah, Eric Dickerson was one of those.

Oh, man, this is Eric Dicker. This is Eric Freaking Dickerson, and it was awful. I had the same thing about Jack Nichol's the first time I've ever met him. terrible, terrible, you know, meeting of what I thought was one of my heroes. Hmm. That's unfortunate. Yeah. But it was also older. Yeah. Wasn't like he was fresh off Augustin 86. You know what I'm saying? Maybe he was just having a bad day, Matt. Don't judge him. Well, as I'm saying, his first impression.

Maybe he's a swell guy. Maybe he's fantastic and wonderful. Okay. I don't know. I mean, I guess. I just, I'm telling you, some, when you only get to, meet the megastars once and they come off badly, that's all you got, right? That's true.

You've met nobody in your life for the first impression. Like, oh, somebody asked me that once. A celebrity I met who was just kind of black. I'll give you one more. This is a celebrity. This is, you know, the monkeys, right? The band in the 60s. I played golf of Mickey Dolans one time.

Yes. And you hated him. And I just like, I will never listen to your music ever again. He was such an a-hole. I mean, major a hole. So you eliminated two songs then. So he wanted to go play golf. He was here in town for something.

And, you know, golf in Houston and June, Ross, I got news for you. It's going to be a little warm. I mean, there's no 18-hole indoor golf course. I guess you're going to tee it off at 6 p.m. And so he just nonstop bitched and moaned about the heat. I'm like, bra, what did you expect? You got free golf.

Yeah. We're not making you pay for a food or a drink. any drink on him because you're Mickey freaking Dolans. And he was just terrible. Hey, we're on the coast and we're a stone throw away from the equator. It's going to be hot

That's actually not true. Yes. One plays eight, two play seven. Now, three, four, five, six can move around a little bit because of records. They're going first and seconds are one through one, six, one through six. Right. And then the seven eight is seven eight. Right. So you could have a, regardless of record. You could have a five or six seed have a worse record than a seven and eight.

Yes. Okay. Three game wild card played in the home venue of the higher seed. Then they go to neutral sites for the next two rounds, which I don't believe it will be the once we get regular stadiums going again. We'll have regular, you know, home and road. I don't mind it. You what? Yeah, I don't mind it. The best, so you play 162 games.

You win 110 games or whoever, 105 games, and you're the best team in baseball. You've earned your number one spot as the seed, and then you can be out in two games because of some funky, wonky three-game series. Okay. Hell no. Okay, how about we adjust it? How about we give the top two seeds the buy? Okay.

I don't think we've, we clearly emphasize enough. The this extreme small sample size of this season. The volatility, Matthew. Tye. It'd be like going from playing an NFL 18 game season to playing six.

You went from 162 to 60? Hell it might be going from a 60 NFL game season to a 5 if you think about it. Maybe 6, maybe closer to it. Like this college football season is going to be played. Most teams are playing 10 games. The Big 12 may be playing, I mean the Big 10 may be playing. I mean, the big 10 may be playing eight. What is the SEC going to play?

They're playing 10 games all in conference. So that's a very subtle change. Most teams play 12. Occasionally, a few play will play 13, but that's small. This is dramatic. And that's the one thing that I really took away from George visiting with us yesterday was that, man, you just don't have any room. You get hit hard on the road.

Well, your ERA spikes from three and a half to six. Go ask Lance McCuller about how one bad performance. performance ruins your entire season. But it hasn't been just won. He's been terrible all on the road all season long. All in a day's work for a gimmicky season, Matthew. It is. And again, we're going to be just as hypocritical, but at least we're being consistent, Rossiness.

We told everybody, if the Astros don't win, this is a completely gimmicky season, and it doesn't count. Because I guarantee you, next spring training, when you and I go to West Palm Beach, hopefully if they have spring training, they'll be able to say, what was last year like? Oh, man, we couldn't get into our rhythm. We were having playing doubleheaders some days. We were having strange days off. We were going to hotels in the road and not being able to leave. there is a spring training schedule. Yeah. And it's full.

And there's a full 162 game schedule also out for next year too. And the NBA is going to have to come to this pretty quick. Because the NBA season, I envision Ross, they want to go eight games, 82 games. They want to make as much, they want to get this revenue back. These teams, these leagues that don't play full seasons with full fans lose revenue. And ultimately, when things are collectively bargained, they go off of, basketball revenue or off of baseball revenue. And if you don't have the revenue, nobody's winning.

The owners aren't making as much money and those player salaries are dropping too. And the players don't want to hear that. And that's just a reality. So that's why I think there will be a significant push to not only play in arenas, where it may be four, five, six thousand people, but they're going to try to play 82. How about these arenas in general? No, there's no concerts. When's the last time something happened in TOTA center?

Early March. That is a building, Ross, that is used all the damn time. It's not overrun with the Astrodome Rats, is it? No, it's still fresh and clean. It's sanitized. Why I was going there to do the Rockets playoff games in the arena? I'd sneak in the arena. He'd get some shots up?

I criticized the NFL last week because the Monday night games, when you and I were growing up, Doc, they were the sexy matchups.

Three of the four teams did not play in the playoffs last year. They were on Monday night football. So we're going to move past that. It's the Thursday night opener, Dr. Roto. It's the Bengals and the Browns. I mean, the only reason why you're watching this is because you're from Ohio. You've got a bet on the game or you've got fantasy. So let's get to the third part of that.

Who's sitting? Who's staying? Who's going to play? Who's going to score big in the Bengals and Browns this week? All right. So let's see. So Baker Mayfield historically has always done well. like people are missing two guys from the defensive lines.

That should be an issue. I think if you need to love him this week, but I like them. Beckham has to get on track. If he doesn't get the ball, he's even though. So he got to, he's not one of time. And stop. We're going to try this again. We're going to try to get Dr. Rodo a better line.

Because he was getting chockful information there, Rossi, but we just couldn't hear words. So we're going to try to reestablish that connection. Is he a submarine? No. I mean, I guess there are submarines in Fort Myers. That's true. So if we need to maybe find a landline for Doc, whatever the case.

Dr. Roto is a Florida man is what you're saying. Well, he's not eligible for Florida stories. By the way, non-Florida stories today. Mine is coming from Kentucky. Okay. Yours is coming from? Undetermined. Undetermined.

Browns and Bengals, who sits and who plays? He's done well against the Bengals. The Bengals are missing two guys on their defensive line. So I think if you need Baker, you can start them. Beckham got 10 targets last week. He also had four targets that were on penalties. So, I mean, he really was the third most targeted receiver last week, but he didn't catch the ball because Baker was very inaccurate.

I think he has a better week. I'm starting Nick Chub for sure. I think this is a game where they established the run. On the Bengals side, I mean, you can't bench, go mix, and I just don't expect a big night. But my favorite play in the Bengals is Tyler Boyd. I think he will get the football. You know, it's not a great game, but it's fantasy.

So we watch it. Give me two or three of your massive. disappointments from last week? I think Antonio Gibson was a massive disappointment. This was a guy that we were expecting to have the starting running back job for the Redskins, and all of a sudden we see Peyton Barber running two touchdowns in. So I think that was a disappointment. I think Austin Echler was a disappointment.

I mean, the guy had how many receptions last year, and he didn't have any in week one? I mean, if the Chargers got lucky winning that game, by the way, but you have to get Echler involved in the passing game. All right, let's get to some of the games this weekend. We'll stay in the AFC South. Jags and Titans, we know who's going to play for the Tennessee. Was there anything that came out of the Jacksonville game that surprised you in terms of a player that you may want to put towards the end of your bench that may be worthy of playing or maybe perhaps a free agent pickup?

Yeah, I think a lot of people are missing out on the Jaguars. There's some talent there. They're building something that's good. So James Robinson is an absolute three-down running back. They felt comfortable getting rid of Leonard Fortnet because I knew they had him. He was the number one running back in the FCS last year. Secondly, DJ Chark, who most people know, but Leviska-Shanalt, this guy, he's going to get better as the season goes on. And in fantasy, if you have a spot deep at your bench, I would look at him.

And then lastly, on defense, CJ Henderson did a really good job covering T.Y. Hilton. And so I tend to look at the wide receiver cornerback matchups. So when you look at that, it's very underrated that people look at that, but I think in fantasy it's important. who is your wide receiver going up against? There are certain shutdown quarterbacks out there like Stefan Gilmore, you know, Darius Slay, we want to avoid some of those guys. All right, we mentioned to you last week about quarterbacks and new venues. We've seen one week, which is obviously an incredibly small sample size,

but what did you take away from the Panthers and Bucks with new quarterbacks and what they should do this week? Well, look, I think that Tom Brady had a rough week. And once again, I told you that was about the Saints are good defense, and Mike Evans was not healthy. Ronald Jones is their running back. They are not the Bucks. The Bucks will step it up this week.

Okay, the Bucks will step it up this week. I think Brady has a good week, except Chris Godwin does have a concussion issue, so I think he's 50-50 as to whether he plays. I thought Teddy B played all right last week. I thought it was problem with the coaching. I mean, Christian McCaffrey had three receptions last week, and then on that fourth and one,

they hand the ball to the fullback. I mean, what are you doing? You're the best player in the game, and you're giving the ball to a fullback? I mean, that's some bad play calling there. All right, let's go to the first. The Vikings and the Colts, Philly Style does what he normally does, and it throws a fourth quarter interception.

The Vikings, let's be honest, the Packers' offense was way more prolific in that game last Sunday, was it not? Well, okay, so people need to key in on the fact that the Vikings secondary is very young and very inexperienced, and Aaron Rogers took complete advantage of that. Devante Adams, Alan Lazard, Deltes Scantling, you name it, that person would have scored a touchdown. So you would think that Hilton and Paris Campbell are going to have good. good weeks. Minnesota wants to run the football, but the Packers didn't let them do that because

the Packers got out to such a lead that the Vikings were playing from behind. I think this game is going to be a lot closer this week. I also think that, you know, Jonathan Taylor is somebody that if you haven't seen this guy or you don't know this guy, he's a fantasy star. So if you can make a trade for Jonathan Taylor, go do it. Niam Hines will be very involved in the offense. Rivers loves to throw his running backs out of the backfield. Look at Danny Woodhead. Look at Austin Echler. And Nimehimes is just like that. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the NFL last week besides the fact that Jaguars were eight-point dogs and won the game was what Washington did with Philadelphia. What do we learn about the Redskins offensively and from a fantasy perspective with their victory over Philadelphia last week?

Yeah, that wasn't as shocking as most people think because the Philadelphia Eagles had like four guys out on their offensive line. And the Redskins' best strength is their pass rush with Chase Young and Jonathan Allen. So, I mean, look, Went made some bad plays and Dwayne Haskins did just enough. I think the Redskins are in a little bit of trouble this week. I think you're looking about going to the Cardinals, and the Cardinals play to breakneck pace, and that's something I want people out there to key in on. Pace.

Pace means more plays. More plays means more opportunity, and more opportunity to get you more fantasy points. So we love the Cardinals. In terms of the Eagles, Lane Johnson is expected back. I think that's big. If he's not there, you watch Aaron Donald.

He could have three sacks this week. All right, the Patriots had some success with a nice, consistent, nothing spectacular type approach against the Miami Dolphins, they now go across the country to play a very, well, typically ferocious Seattle defense. How will Cam Newton in your mind and the rest of his skill position players doing week number two? I mean, Cam did last week what Cam does. He controls that game. He runs the ball. He throws when he has to. That's Cam at his best. Are we going to get that Cam every week? No, but when he plays the Jets twice, he plays the Dolphins twice and a couple other crappy teams. You're going to see that. Now he goes to Seattle. He's going to have to show up. He's

going to have to throw the ball. Can Cam throw the ball? Can he find Julian Edelman? Can he find to kill Harry? I don't know. So I think we saw Cam it as best in week one. In week two, I think we're going to see more of a mediocre cam. And look, Russell Wilson played great. And the Seahawks threw the ball more than people thought they would. I mean, Chris Carson, the word of have here was restrained. He barely did anything after the first quarter. So I think the Seahawks around to something there, letting Russell Wilson pass more. Is Kyle Allen going to have another big week this week? Oh, Josh Allen?

Josh Allen. Josh is going to have a good week. Yeah, I mean, he historically kills the dolphins. I mean, he had his best games last year against Miami. And so I think that Buffalo is a pretty good team. They've won the ball well. They've got new good skill players with stuff on Diggs and John Brown. You're playing on DFS.

I think you can certainly play Josh Allen and sees the elite your start at him. I just think we're just nervous about picking a guy with such a little experience putting up. What did he have? I mean, over 300 yards of the air last week, right? And plus good moving on the ground, too. Well, his floor, you know, in fantasy terms, I call things feelings and floors. His floor is very high because he's mobile, right? And when they get in the five-yard line, he sometimes runs it in. So when he's passing like he did last week, he's a real good quarterback. Now, the Jets may have had the worst pass rush I think I've ever seen. There were times where Josh Allen just took out a lawn chair and just sat there, and nobody came near him. So I

think it's going to be a little bit better this week with the top of it, but not much better. I think with no pass rush, I don't going to carve them up. We talked about Washington a minute ago with the Cardinals hosting him this week. Did all the success that DeAndre Hopkins have come in an expense of the other guys that were wearing wide receiver uniforms for the Cardinals? Yes, absolutely. And that's a great point. So my prediction for week two is I think we're going to see a topsy-turvy week.

So you're not going to give DeAndre Hopkins another 14 receptions. because he'd have 28 and Christian Kirk would have zero. So week two is like a make-up week for coaches. So now maybe Hopkins has six or seven catches, but Kirk has five. You've got to integrate guys in the offense. So I think a lot of players that had bad weeks in week one will have much better weeks in week two. All right.

I would play Kenyon Drake because I actually think this is going to be a Leonard Fournet week.

So there you go. Why do you think it's Leonard Fournet week? It looked like Tom Brady was perturbed with him last week. Maybe so, but you pay the guy 3.25 mil. And if you want to win a Super Bowl, it's not going to be with a guy like Ronald Jones is going to be with Fournet because he's a star. So the Carolina Panthers have one of the three worst run defenses in the NFL. If there's ever a week to get this guy the ball and get his rolling, this is the week. So, you know, I don't love him this week, but I certainly don't. I didn't wake up this morning loving Ronald Jones either.

All right. So can I interrupt it now and ask Roto a question since Adam Klan got one in? Sure, why not? Hey, Doctor. It's Ross. How are you? Hey, Ross. How are you been?

I'm great. Sit to Odell Beckham, Calvin Ridley, Hollywood Brown, DJ Moore, Deontay Johnson. Wow. I know. That's a good line of it. Yeah, it is good line. Bragher. I'm not sitting Ridley ever.

I'm not sitting Marquis Brown ever. Right? They're just too good. So between Johnson has a tough matchup. I like the player. I don't like the matchup. More could be garbage time. I think they're going to feed Beckham.

So I'm okay sitting Johnson, and I think it's your choice between Beckham and more who you feel more comfortable with. Thank you. Speaking of Hollywood Brown, we did not go to the Ravens Texans yet. I would assume every single wide receiver running back tight end ever for Baltimore should be in somebody's lineup this week. Would that be fair to say? Yeah, fire up your Ravens. But look, I'm going to give you guys some hope.

I'm planning on DFS this week. I'm going to roll with some contrarian lineups with the Texans there. Because if the Texans can keep this game close and Vegas has this game at like a 51. So unless we think that the Ravens are going to win, you know, 4110, which is possible, I think the Texans are going to be closer this week. So, I mean, look, I love Marquise Brown. I love Mark Andrews, Dobbins and Ingram and Lamar Jackson. But look, David Johnson looks spry last week, shockingly.

Will Fuller is a good player. Watson is always a threat. So, you know, they have a puncher's chance. I will, you know, I was actually teasing the audience about taking David Johnson in a keeper league in the third round. I mean, I think him and Brayning Cooks, and, again, Brandon, the offense was so sluggish, But those could be the two real go-to guys for Deshaun this year at the end of the day, right? No, Deshawn's going to go to Will Fuller.

Look, they're going to validate David Johnson's trade, and David Johnson played real well. But he's not the Andre Hopkins. Hopkins showed you what a difference maker he is, right? So, I mean, the guy goes to the carnals and is a superstar. So, I mean, look, let's just call what it is. This is a terrible trade, and it was a trade that never needed to happen. It was just so Brian didn't want to deal with Hopkins anymore and vice versa. Yeah, and he also caught more.

Sure. Dr. Roto, I just had a quick question for you. For Noah Fant, I picked him up and drop Robbkin, Grunkowski. Do you see him as a bigger threat than Hayden Hurst? And then real quick, if you got time, Malcolm Brown, would you ride that train? Yeah. So, Fant was really good in the first half on Monday Night's game. And then he turned into a phantom in the second half and I stopped throwing at him.

But I do like him. I think he's a good player. Tough matchup with the Steelers, though, this week. I like Hayden Hurst. I think that he wasn't used as much last week because Jamal Adams is there and that's a tougher matchup. I think he's going to do better against the Cowboys. in terms of playing them, I think their point production will be similar this week. Here's the thing about Malcolm Brown.

The Cowboys didn't have Sean Lee and Leighton Vander Esch, who was their best linebacker, got hurt in the middle of the game. The Rams ran the ball 40 times. I mean, that is a crazy number. That's not going to happen again this week. The Eagles have a very good run defense. So I like Malcolm Brown, but I don't love him. I think the better running back there is Cam Acres.

And I think anybody who spent gobs of money on Malcolm Brown is going to be a little disappointed. Thanks for the phone call. We appreciate you listening. Brown. You just talked about him. Miller, Montgomery, Reagan. Cortland Sutton's a guy that I can't wait to use, but he sounds like he's still questionable for the game this week. Is that right? He is. We don't know that. And I thought, honestly, let's just look back on that Bronco game. That was one of the worst coaching jobs I think I've ever seen. That was bad clock management at the end of the game, really, and some bad play calling Jerry Judy. I hope he doesn't eat with. those hands because, man, it's going to be all, the food's going to be all over his shirt. That guy's got to catch the football better. I mean, Drew, he made, Drew Locke had another 80 yards

Maybe it's Nicole Hardman. maybe is Travis Kelsey, but I'm not sure it's the receivers. I do, Mike Williams is interesting. Tyrae Taylor likes throwing deep, and I think that he's going to be in play. And look, I think you have to feed Beckham.

If you can't get Beckham going against the Bengals, when are you going to get him going? And then if he is a malcontent, you're going to have to trade this guy by week eight because he's not going to want to be there. So I think this is a Beckham week. All right. He looked good on that last drive, but the Chargers were pretty good. I think this game is going to be over the 44 points, but I don't feel comfortable yet with Joe Burrow.

Joe Mixon, look, you took him probably in the first or second round. I mean, do we want to bench him? I don't think so. I think they need to get him more involved in the passing game. So a lot of, like, reflection and I did a ton of walking, like, probably upwards of about six miles a day. you know and so a lot of thinking a lot of changing evaluating how you do things and then changing and implementing different ways of doing things and so our practice schedule is a little bit different so this morning on Thursdays you know we kind of wrap things up we go in the morning on Tuesday and Thursday morning and then we go on the afternoon on Sunday and Wednesday

so it's kind of a quick turnaround from Wednesday night to Thursday morning long story short, I've already walked about five miles, so I walked before practice and after practice. And so now I'm just kind of getting my binder ready for the game this Saturday here in the office. And you're having a big chocolate shake to celebrate your five-mile walk? No. Cake pops. Much better.

Yeah, Lewis Jewelries, which is a big University of Houston supporter. They dropped off a bunch of these cake pops. So I've already had a great. couple of them. Well, I'm not going to judge you on that. All right, let's get right to it. How cranky were your boys, coach, when you had to tell them about the situation at Memphis, I'm presuming they knew about it already, and then how ecstatic

were they when you came in them and said, we're going to Waco, Texas on Saturday? Yeah, they probably knew more about it than I did. You know, the coaches don't talk to each other very much, and what I'm gathering, administrators don't really talk to each other very much either, but our players

talk a lot, right? So a lot of our guys know a lot of the players on Memphis. So, you know, it's funny. I mean, just with social media and being able to communicate with a whole bunch of people, like, constantly all day long, I would say the majority of our team knew more than coaches did. And this kind of came about last Friday. You may know more than I do, but I know kind of some of the media started hitting on Friday. and we I had I had a mock game scheduled for Friday night so they weren't coming in until

five o'clock in the afternoon. We were going to meet them for a while and then go to the stadium and do a pregame thing and you know kind of do a mock kickoff at 630. Well at five o'clock they're looking at me like what's up coach? And I'm like guys you guys you guys probably know more than I do. You know, we got to stay ready to play. I mean the game at this point in time is on. So we got to stay ready to play.

And they were good. You know, I said today's not about Memphis. Today's about Houston. Today's about, you know, us understanding game day, understanding pregame, how the locker room works. You know, there's a lot of guys on the team that went through this last year, but there's a lot of guys that didn't go through it last year as well. So we need to, you know, how the sideline is going to work, how substitutions work, you know, how the flow of the game works. So regardless if we play Memphis or we play the Dallas Cowboys next Friday night, you know, this is still going to be good for us.

So I had their attention, you know, but then afterwards, when we called it up, they're just kind of looking at me like, what are we going to do? I was probably a little concerned on if that game got postponed what I was going to do this week, you know, just because for eight weeks, we've been gearing ourselves towards playing this upcoming weekend. And I just felt like we were ready for game week, you know, and then this opportunity presented itself literally, you know, within the next 12 to 20 hours, this thing was done. From the time Friday night was over to the time it was done,

it was an easy thing because we were ready to play, and I commend both administrations for making it happen so quickly. Both coaching staffs were excited, and I know both teams as far as the players were excited as well. You know, I got a phone call from Pez when I was at the mall on Saturday, and I'm like, oh, no, the Memphis game. And he goes, well, wait. And he said, what if I told you were going to Waco?

and I'm like, oh, heck yeah. Not only to rejuvenate that series, but he said, hey, there's two more matchups this decade. So if this went from a, oh, no, no more football again another week to, not only do you get to play a quality opponent, you get to play on national television, the game of the week early on, but you also get to do this and re, you know, rejuice a series that was very advantageous to both sides, say, 25, 30 years ago.

Yeah, it's a win-win. everybody. You know, I was shocked to hear that we hadn't played Baylor in 25 years. You know, I mean, obviously aware that, you know, and I've educated our team, you know, long before this about the history of the Southwest Conference, you know, the old rivals that existed, you know, the fact that it's a damn shame that the University of Houston doesn't play the likes of Baylor and Texas and Texas Tech, which we're playing opening up with Texas Tech next year, which is going to be awesome. It's just really good for the university because our university is ready.

It's really good for our athletic department. It's really good for our football team, the fan base, the players enjoy it. So it's a win-win for everybody, you know. And I'm just glad it came together. And then once again, I commend, you know, Chris Pezman and our administration for getting on it so quick and having the wherewithal to get a couple more games scheduled down the road as well. So it's a game that should be played. It's a damn shame.

It hadn't happened in 25 years, but we get to do it here this time. Dan, is this the first time that Clayton Toon knows in a week one his exact role? I mean, obviously with other great quarterbacks had been through here the last couple of years, you know, he knew his role as a backup and didn't know how much he was going to play, if any. This is his football team. And tell us about what it's been like watching him grow just during this pandemic in terms of it's his football team. he's a single caller. He's a number one guy. Now he just wants to get on the field

and prove that he's worth it. Yeah, you're right. I mean, you know, game one, two years ago, he was the backup to Deeric and ended up playing in five games that year, but knew Deerick was coming back. And then last year, he was the guy for seven games, I believe, is what he ended up starting in and playing in.

And, you know, knew he was the starter, you know, started the season, he was Derek's backup, but then was the starter for seven games, but also knew that Derek was coming back. So he's in a different mindset right now. And, you know, once he knew it was his team and he was the guy, then I think that allows you to, you know, have a clear mind and commit to it 100%. And everybody looks at you a little bit different. Now, there's responsibility with that, too.

But he's the type of guy that can handle that responsibility and understands the magnitude of what being the starting quarterback means. You know, he looks like a starting quarterback. I mean, he's a good looking 6-2, 210-pound broad-shouldered guy that smiles and talks good and is intelligent. And, oh, yeah, by the way, can throw the football pretty accurately and pretty far and can run as well. So he's got the respect to the team.

He's allowed to be able to grow now and do it freely, and he's done so. So a completely different guy right now than what he was, at any point last year. And I'm excited about watching them play. People got to play good around them, but part of the thing about being the starting quarterback is making people around you better as well. And he understands that and it's currently doing that.

So I'm excited about seeing where we're at. I'm excited about seeing where he's at. It looks a whole lot better in practice right now, but we practice differently now, too. So some of the stuff's on air, but at least we're playing balls on air. And looking forward to seeing where we're at here. Saturday. And you've got a good feel for Charlie Brewer. And this guy's been at Baylor,

I mean, through the darkest times, and now he's got another coach. And so what do you expect from him? And also on the defensive side, do you spend a lot of time looking at Dave oranda tape from, you know, LSU to kind of figure out what he thinks is best for his program? I obviously different kids, but I'm thinking schematically about the same thing, right? Yeah, game one's always tricky. I don't care if you're going against the staff that, like, you know, them going. against us. I mean, offense, defense, special teams is the same. You got a bunch of video you can watch last year. Well, they just really don't, when it comes right down to it, they don't know what I've been up to for the last eight months. And so things could be different. You know, Charlie Brewer, great player at Texas High School has won everywhere he's been. As is a tough,

gritty, intelligent football player with a lot of experiences. His coming out party was against West Virginia three years ago. And we, we, we, we, we, we, were in Waco and we were winning by about 31 points, 32 points, and he brought him back within a two-point conversion to tie the game. So, yeah, I saw his coming out party and he's a fantastic football player and, you know, he's a dual-threat guy that's pezzy and smart and we'll be able to pick things up quick. Now, what are they going to do offensively? It's a little bit of a guess. You know, I mean, Joe Wickland, their O-Line coach was with me at West Virginia, so I kind of know what his thoughts and ideas are.

I've known Larry Fedora for a long time. There's a lot of information to go back and look at. How much does he learn from Texas last year being the analyst is something we got and taken into consideration? Dave Miranda defensively got the head coaching job at Baylor because of what he does defensively. I doubt he strays too far from that. You know, he hired a guy that he used to work for in Ron Roberts.

And they do kind of the same thing. He was the D.C. at Louisiana, Lafayette. You kind of just take those two and you kind of merge them and you guess. And then game one is always about adjustments. It's about coming out and kind of seeing what their plan is and then being able to adjust. I like the fact that our staff has a lot of continuity and we'll have answers for whatever they do, regardless of if it's offense, defense or special teams. Coach, I'd like to wish you luck personally Saturday in Waco, but we're going to be in the press box and we can't come on the field. So I'll just wish you good luck here today.
