But J.Kid and I are aligned, and we talk about archetypes, and we talk about the culture that we want to create. So I know the type of players that that, that he likes without actually talking to him, hey, would you like? So I know that. And J.K. coached them when they won a championship. So I think when you're aligned with your coach like that,

I know the type of players that he likes. This deal materialized in the shadows. This came out of nowhere. This is maybe the most stunning trade. Definitely that I've been a part of in recent NBA history. As far as it was never clearly out there. The Los Angeles Lakers made a statement. We're moving forward.

We appreciate what you've done. But this is no longer your franchise. This is Luca Donchik's franchise. Now, you can go out there and do what you want for the next year or so. But this is no longer yours. No one has ever said that in the 22 years that LeBron James has been in the NBA, Shannon. No one. I've been a master of my whole entire life since I've been a baby.

This is the worst moment in the history of my life. This is ridiculous. This is crazy, man. We went to the NBA finals. Why are we trading the best? player, the franchise player. How are we trading the franchise player? He went to the NBA finals.

He's supposed to have a statue. Hell we go. He's supposed to have a statue. Dirk got a statue right there. Supposed to be Luca right there. We don't have a statue for Luca. The entire sports world, Sports RV, is in a

Ross, and look, we are by no means a vibrant non-Rockets NBA City. I don't know if an intriguing matchup like Oklahoma City and Denver would necessarily move the needle for our audience. So when we talk about this trade today, and we will obviously get into a lot of it, for those that are the NBA gurus, or people that follow it,

but also for just the casual sports fan that listens to our show. I don't know if we need to put a cop on it, but I don't think it would hurt. This to me is, and I've been doing this a long time. I don't know. Now, I wasn't in sports when Herschel Walker trade happened from Dallas and Minnesota. Okay, so I don't, that obviously was a unbelievable stop, the earth-stop spinning kind of a move in the NFL. Can you help me with a couple of more that have shook the earth like this one did on Saturday night? Matt, your thoughts on Babe Ruth being sold to the Yankees in 1919.

Okay, not in the business. What was your reaction when that happened? I didn't have a reaction. I was not around at this point, although some would think I was. I was not. I mean, the only thing that popped in my head was Kareem getting traded to the Lakers, but also I wasn't in

1975. I was still watching Tom and Jerry and enjoying that experience in suburban Detroit at the age of three. This is one of the biggest moves in sports history. It just is. It absolutely, and that's what I want to talk to you guys about today. You have been a part of some

incredible things. You saw the greatest basketball player of all time play, and Michael Jordan, many of you have. You've seen the second greatest. You've seen the home run king be dethroned. You've seen multi-dynasties in many sports. You've seen the greatest of the greats play. Wayne Gretzky and Tiger Woods.

I mean, you in this generation that we're living in right now, you may have seen one of the three biggest trades in the history of sports. And I'm just throwing the number three out, Ross, because I can't, I'm, there's got to be two that are going to be comps of this at some point. But this is nuts. And the thing about trades are, you can't obviously grade them out for three to four years. No, we can grade this one. Okay, I'm good. What am I kidding?

Look, and by the way, any time that we say Doewey on the show today, we need to get Jalen Rose's ding out, because if there's any time that you and I like using that work, It's when describing Luca Donge. Oh, come on. You're going to call the guy Doey right now. What are you going to call him? I mean, he's basically fat now. Special, spectacular, great playmaker, one of the all-time great scores, and a finals participant.

Apparently, a 270 pounds right now, too. No, that's not true, is it? Just throwing it out there. Just throwing it out there. Point being is this, you don't see an All-Star for an All-Star Ross we've seen traded before. A starter,

a main go-to threat, sure. But when Luca's healthy, and look, he's not healthy right this moment,

but he'll be healthy eventually. He's a top, what, three player in the league? Yokic, SGA, Luca?

Yeah, depends on what you want to put Janus in there. Yonis, I mean, okay, so top five. Healthy and B. He's top five-ish. We can

stop right there. You don't, who by the way, if you would have kept him was going to sign a deal that was going to put him in the Supermax, and for those who don't know, and I had to look what Supermaxes are. Looks Max contracts are dollar amounts that every team can pay their own.

But if you've been with an NBA team for seven years, and you haven't been traded, and you make first or second team, or third team all NBA in the previous two years, you are eligible for a Supermax. But that's the only team that can pay the Super Max is the original team you were with, basically trying to keep players to stay with the team they were drafted.

So Luca was going to make, what? How much was it? Yeah, it was like $350 million, whatever it was. Whatever it was. Some godly amount. Something godly amount. Not only does he not get that from Dallas, he can't get that from the Los Angeles Lakers because he's not longer super eligible

max. He was eligible for five years, $345 million. So basically, Dow's could control him, pay him any amount of money, literally the most money you can ever pay on potential NBA player. If there is a top of the list, he'd be there. And the Mavericks just told Luca Donchich, your doughy butt ain't worth it. Yeah, but even if they were going to say that he was not worth the money, how do they only talk to the Lakers? how does he not talk to his head coach about who he wants back? And then that quote that we played at the beginning,

oh, I know what kind of players he wants. It's fine. We've got a good relationship. Something is rotten in Denmark. Something stinks with this. Something ain't right. I don't know what it is. I don't think it's, you know, the Adam Silver rigging the league for the Lakers like some people are saying or whatever.

But something ain't right. You don't start a bidding war for one of the great young players in the NBA? He was a 5 years old, by the way. Yep. Yep. And I want to know, did LeBron really not know? And if he really didn't know, then how much do the Lakers really care about LeBron?

We'll get to that. Matt, Dave McMinneman says he didn't know. How do you not tell the de facto general manager of the Lakers what you're doing? I'm just kidding. Dave McMinnon has been obviously in bed with the Lakers and LeBron, and so he would be. it's not a giant leap to say he was told by LeBron's camp to say hey go ahead and report that LeBron didn't know about this we'll get to more of this again this is to us at least to Ross tonight bigger than the sport

it's taking one of the three biggest transactions in the history of that league but so long Ross has been 77 years in the NBA is everything like that celebrated 75 so let's add a couple more 77 years of NBA basketball this might be the biggest trade in the history of the history of the NBA. And we're alive for it. Rossi Chip Kelly's in the NFL. He is? Yep. He's on Kirby?

It's Nico Abramowitz, and he apparently is a former Nike executive. Yes. That has a relationship with Rob Polinka, who's a former sports agent. Neither one of them have ever been a general manager before until the jobs they just inherited now. It's been on the job for a few years.

You know what Nico Harrison was famous for before this? The Kobe shoe? The Steph Curry shoe. Oh, Seth Curry. No, he botched the 2013 presentation to Steph Curry. He called him Seth and then accidentally played the presentation used for Kevin Durant. No. Okay.

So that's another thing. I understand secrecy. actually I respect secrecy when it keeps being tight-lipped on things. Do you think maybe Nico was afraid that he started calling other teams kicking the tires on Luca that the word would get out and that eventually you'd hear about Luca Donchich rumors that would probably affect Luca Donchers? I don't know how you take a top five player in the NBA.

In the not even really the super prime of his career, he's 25 years old. He's got 10 years at least in the NBA left. As long as well, taste of his doughy body when he's been health has been an issue. Number one, very clearly the man's organization was upset. And they got to a boiling point. Clearly, they tried to talk to him. We've heard reports over the years of them like, hey, stop messing with all the refs. Like, this is enough.

Clearly, for years and years and years, they've been trying to get him to get into shape. He plays himself into shape. He doesn't say into shape. If we're kind of, we can't sell this as Luca Donchitz is this perfect angel dynamic. playmaker, no doubt about it. Bitch about the officials every single time. He's got issues. Luca Donchish is not perfect, and the Mavs clearly

hit a boiling point. But even given that, getting back Anthony Glassman Davis and a first rounder doesn't make any sense. Not going to any other teams, doesn't make any sense. Don't forget Max Christie. I really

try not to be conspiracy theory and use the word collusion, but this just stinks from the high evidence. So a big storyline yesterday around the NBA or the World Sports World is that the Lakers always figure out a way to get stars. Somehow, some way, they get stars. Yes. Mark Gassall being the last example of, or is a Powell Gassau. Which one was the – Powell was the – Paul was the Laker.

Yeah. Paul Gassol from Memphis. Shack from the Orlando Magic. Kobe gets drafted in middle first round on the trade with Charlotte. But they go get James Worthy in this, you know, and who they had somebody else. They drafted James Worthy, right, or no? Yeah, they drafted James Worthy. Was it him and Byron Scott both in the same draft?

They got, didn't he go like number one James Worthy? No. Or it was very. No, Magic went one. Let me look it up. James, I want to say, was mid to late first round from that mistake. James Worthy first overall pick, 1982. Just like I said, the very first overall selection.

Yeah, how do the Lakers who did? It was some kind of crazy, there were some crazy circumstances around that, too, I think. Yeah. I mean, 80, they won the championship. It was like a trade or something. 81, they lost the Rockets in the playoffs. But, I mean, they were like beginning of showtime, and they were getting showier. Here it is.

The Lakers traded for the Cavaliers' first round pick in 1979 in exchange for Don Ford. Hmm. Hmm. Yeah. And then, and Nico Harris, so whatever his name is, he, he, he, uh, he, uh, he, uh, he, uh, up there with Jason Kidd, and Jason Kidd is just like, what? What are you doing? I can't believe.

Nico Harrison. Nico Harrison, yeah. I mean, they put J.K.K. Up there to look like, I mean, I think J.K.K.D. didn't know a word about it. I really believe it. You look like there was a deer in headlights up there on that press conference yesterday. You're doing me what? You're making me trade.

What? Now, let me ask you this one. Well, I say before we go to the phones. Could Dallas be really good this year? and get that and have the true rim protective they were looking for. I mean, they already have Daniel Gaffer. I mean, they got some guys underneath, but AD wakes up with a double-double. Problem is he goes into coma for a while a lot of times.

Yeah. And he's going with the defense wins championships thing. Like, okay, AD gets a lot of blocks and he's good defensively, but he can get beat up and muscled around by bigger centers. Yeah, I mean, again, an injured toenail, he's out for two weeks. Oh, man. this just does not all add up. It just doesn't. I'll throw this out in the audience. Do you all believe in conspiracies?

It was there some intent to get the Lakers? Are they the chiefs of the NBA? Is everybody want the Lakers to win? Does everybody in the NBA want the Lakers to win? I'm going to put it this way. It's one or the other. It is absolutely institutional, like, malpractice and dysfunction from the Mavericks, or there's collusion. It's one of the other. It's either one of the dumbest.

trades in the history of the sport or it's collusion. It's got to be one or the other. Because otherwise it makes no sense. I'm going to tell you right now, it's just the dumbest trade ever because we have seen sports teams make dumb trades. We know what in these parts not too long ago. Let's talk to Tony and Angleton at 1026. Tony, good morning. Wow, guys, it's trades like this that makes this sports radio is interesting because there's going to be a lot of discussion. I'm going to let people behind me do all that. I'm not going to talk about the conspiracy or anything.

I just want to know about how the rockets are going to benefit for this because it looks like to me that the Mavericks are going to tank, man. They're going to tank. And aren't we tied to them with some kind of draft considerations or something with the Mavericks? The lower they, the lower the worse they do, the better we, our position gets out of my ship. I would have to just, I have to look at the draft situation. I disagree. I don't like the Mavericks are trying to do.

tank. I mean... No, no, I'm not saying they're going to tank, man. I'm just saying they gave up almost 90... I think they gave up 90 points in the first half last night. Yeah. Yeah. And it might just been some of the shock, the shock value of it all. Absolutely. That they just say, like, are you kidding me? Really?

You trade your tape, trading this guy. But I think a lot of you were saying something about his weight. And I was noticing the same thing, man. He has put on some weight. And I think it has a lot to do with him, with with Luca. I think that I think they'd had enough. And he's perfect for L.A.

He'll be, I think he'll do fine there. But as it pertains to the Rockets, man, listen, I'm excited about this team. Matt, you're there with him every day. Yeah. And I, if they may, he's not going to, you know, he's going to kick the tires on any opportunities the Rockets have to get better. Rethel Stone, but I'm excited about this team, and they're a couple pieces away from being really, really good.

So I'm just kind of looking at it from a rocker's perspective, but I'm going to listen to the whole show because it's going to be dominated. Thank you. As a kid, dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, and that goal fuels me today more than ever. My love for the Northeast Ohio and the incredible fan base of the Browns made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. Not really. These past eight years have shaped me in a man I am today.

I love calling the city of my home. I desire to win and compete on the biggest stage won't allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton. It always been to compete and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded for Cleveland Browns. Has this happened before? Releasing a statement to request to trade? I just love sports in 2025. So you're telling me he didn't even call the bros and say something?

Normally it leaks out. Miles Garrett, like, yeah, I want out. Here's a statement with my signature on it and my life story. Yeah, the best trade requests are the ones that do not have to hear from Adam Schaefter. Like, when JJ Watt wanted something to say, he just went to his Twitter account. I have mad respect for that. Yeah. Okay, so he's unhappy in Cleveland.

Call me stunned. What is his age? What's the wear and tear? Has he been healthy? He's had some, I mean, look, he's had some injury issues, but that's... He's an edge player in the NFL. He's one of the most athletic physical freaks on the planet. He is 29.

Six-time Pro Bowl or four-time All-Priol. So there's some, there's some trend on the time. 23 defensive player of the year. 14 sacks. Since his rookie year, he has never had under 10 sacks in a year. Mm. Four time AP first. So we can just and disgust that the Texas trade form.

First time all, first time all pro. I mean, sorry. Four time first team all pro. God, he's really good, huh? For the last five years, the other year he made second team. How many games he to play this year? 17. Oh, he's going to get more.

gets to go where he wants. You know, it's funny. We've always spent all this time defending. Well, you know, life for an NFL player is a little more difficult because you don't have a guaranteed contract. Have we ever really worried about a guy's future if they were good, about whether they were, I mean, all they do is ask for, just like in the NBA, they ask to get out of these deals. You know what this world is, Rossi?

What is this world? Soft. Soft. We have guys getting, we have college kids leaving year after year after year, playing. playing for four different schools in four years. We got players who sign contracts, who then get unhappy because of the coach, and then it's the coach fired,

and then he has to request for a trade. We got Miles Garrett going on probably IG, TikTok, bumble. You're absolutely right, Matt. I want you to go up to Miles Garrett and tell him right in his face. Miles Garrett, you're soft. You know, Miles Garrett, why don't you stick it out? Stick it out like your man, Laramie Tonsle does.

A man's a warrior. He's been with his team through good times. and some bad times. Miles Gary, you're the cornerstone piece of that Cleveland Brown's defense. You can't be asking for a trade. It won't give good value back. He wants to go win a Super Bowl. He's a winner.

So, the rest of the other 1,500 players in the NFL. Man, this is terrible. All we want to do is the first sign of us being will be going. It's not the first sign, man. It's the Cleveland Browns. That's true. You don't want to forget what I'm saying. It's Cleveland.

You suck. You're going to say it. I think you get a free pass if you want out of the Cleveland Browns. you've done, you have done everything humanly possible to help that team win, and your team continues to have poor choices as a coach and general manager. You have put in your fair time.

is once again why I think I said this about once or twice here. I have a feeling that the NBA offseason or trade deadline, you put those two little windows of time in, maybe are more exciting than some of the games are, frankly. Because everybody in their mother, now granted,

I was at the, I was at a party after the Rockets game on Saturday night. Everybody was flipping out. Everybody was like, are you sure Shams has not had his account hacked? I was in disbelief, yeah. Yeah. Disbelief. And I really can't. Like, look, when DeAndre got traded, we were clearly stunned, as we've put the audio of that several times.

But it didn't have the stop what you're doing that this trade had, that this trade had. where people in Houston were obviously like what is going on, people in Arizona are going on, what's going on? And basically the rest of the NFL is like, what's two of the dumbest franchises in sports that are making dumb moves? Is this a case where Nico Harrison's just like, I don't know what I'm doing? So I might as well deal with the devil and hang out with a friend

who I was friends with before and let him go to L.A. And, I mean, why would you want that guy interrupting your future as a franchise you play him three to four times a year. I mean, if you're going to do that, ship Luke to Washington or something. Ship him to Charlotte where you don't have to have him directly in your face. He's going to be on TV, Ross, 12 times a year for the next seven or eight years of his NBA career.

Probably more when you factor in playoffs. You know what I mean? I mean, this is going to be, no wonder Dallas fan was losing their mind. They put burial plots out there in front of the arena. They're going on. There was apparently some insensitive things said about Nico that was put on some paint we don't need to be destroying

property over this. It's just a trade, but I didn't realize Dallas fans had such I'll say piss and vinegar for the Mavericks. Well, the Mavericks won a couple of years back. Oh, that's great.

When does Cowboy training game start? Yeah, I'm still in disbelief. I thought I'm with you, I thought Shams got hacked. Even when he responded to himself saying this is real, it's like, no, this is not real. Yeah, somebody's still been out. Somebody really has the account in lock.

Yeah. And then other NBA pro reporters started confirming it and that's when I was like okay I guess it's real it's the name called Stephen A at his house

I was just on ESPN's broadcast of the Lakers and the Knicks and I could have been home and join a fine Why am I doing this? I should stop This is absolutely unconscionable

but maybe it's like, man, we're tired of you, we're tired of telling you to get in shape. We're tired of you having soft tissue injuries. Yes. We're tired of you having, and we're not going to put $350 million in your piggy bank for a guy who's going to miss 25 games a year because it can't keep himself in shape. Analogy time. Is this you or somebody else? Anology time for me, Matt.

Okay, now, as someone who is the official analogy expert, I'm a very tough critic on this. So go ahead. The Mavericks were dating a 9.5. And everybody's like, man, I can't believe you pulled her. That is great. But it's just been, she's been acting crazy, possessive, and just, I mean, flirting with a bunch of guys on Instagram. He's like, you know what? This headache ain't worth it.

You break up with her. And all your boys are like, what are you doing? You need to marry that girl. And it's like, you just don't understand. So on the outside, it looks like a perfect situation. But on the inside, there's a lot more turmoil than we thought. Not bad. can I add one caveat?

Yes. To this relationship you're speaking of, the nine and a half? This nine and a half wants you to buy her an expensive apartment. She wants a supermax apartment. Yeah. She wants a lot. A supermax loft. Yeah, she wants a loft.

She wants a full butler service. She wants an upgraded car. Now, remember, you could still be with her. Yeah. You get all the benefits of being with a nine and a half. Yes. But she's looking for upgrades. But you're growing for hate and she wants more.

Yeah. You're growing hate for her. and she wants more. Have you been concerned about her weight at all at this one? Well, I don't think of her she's a nine and a half, no. That's different. That's true. Okay.

Our next guest has been a long-time NBA reporter based out of Southern California. You can hear him definitely on the weekends here on Sports Talk 7-90. It's part of the Fox Sports Radio Network. And he joins us.

It's Mark Medina. I believe it for the second time in the history of this radio show. Mark, it's Matt, here in New York City. Thanks for joining me today. we've been trying to find the parallels to this, an analogy. And Ross is my co-host, and he's not going to be a part of this interview. But Ross, I want you to jump on the headset real quick if he's there. Are you there?

Hello. I want you to give Mark the analogy you just gave to our audience. And then, Mark, I want you to grade the analogy based of what we saw in her. Go ahead. All right, Mark. So the Mavericks are this friend of ours that's dating like a 9-and-a-half, and she's smoking hot. And you're like, oh, my God, he's so lucky. But deep within that relationship, there seems to be some discord.

There's some issues that we don't even know about. So on the outside, it looks like a perfect scenario. But perhaps on the inside, there were some strife that we didn't know about, and that's thus the breakup. Yeah, it doesn't make any sense because unless Luca Dachich said that he wants out, he wants to be traded, he's not going to sign an extension. This doesn't make any sense. and the Mavericks and, you know, Lucaside have maintained that that hasn't been the case. So I think your analogy is spot on that, you know, there might be some insecurity that, oh, this person is going to break up with me months down the line. So I'm going to get ahead of the curve, even though I want to keep that person, but I just don't want to get my heartbroken.

That seems to be the analogy here. But the thing that is really confusing on top of that is that Dallas could have gotten a better deal. I mean, they got Anthony Davis. he's a great player. They got Max Christie. He's an emerging young player. They got a first-round pick. But, you know, you only have to look at the Rudy Goldberg trade to see how many, how much you can get in a deal as far as draft picks and other assets go.

Now, it seems like from Dallas's end, they didn't want to prolong this and affect the locker room. And, you know, sometimes when things get out in the open, that can derail a deal. But we're talking about a generational town. I mean, the Lakers basically got a coup here. Mark, do you think part of the reason why the conversation was just to the Lakers is because that word travels fast and lips will flap all around the world of sports and they start spreading the rumor out that he wanted to keep this as quiet as possible. He said, if I'm going to do that, I've got to just kind of basically have a conversation

with one team. Yeah, it seems like that was part of the calculus. I thought it was notable that Nico Harrison in his press conference the other day was creating Rob Polinka for keeping this secret. if they had some informal conversations a few weeks ago, and it was very comforting to him that word didn't get out. So, yes, when you look at certain deals like this, or several years ago when the Lakers got Pal-Gissal in 2008,

no one knew about this. I think at the same time, though, we're in a different era where things get out quickly, there's a lot more people on staff or social media, that any expectation that nothing is, is out in the open is fairly unrealistic, but I think given the context of they're talking about a generational star, if it's out, who knows how it affects the locker room and how Luca feels, and if a deal doesn't work out, you know, is it almost like the toothpaste is out of the

tube? But again, I go back to what the Dallas Mavericks got in return. Anthony Davis is a great player. He's a defensive player of the year candidate. They are a playoff team. But you could have gotten even more out of this. So I'm just really surprised that this is what they wound up green upon. I don't know. Did you watch the press conference yesterday with Harrison and with Jason Kidd? I felt first of all disappointed with Jason Kidd because I think he was a deer in headlines on this. And in Harrison's case, I just felt like he needed to backtrack in almost every single statement he said

because people are probably in that room going, this sounds good, but you're full of crap. I thought it was notable when Nico said right next to Jason, hey, he didn't know about it, but he's on board. And what Jason's supposed to say? I mean, he said he's on board, too. No one knew about this. It's just one of those things that, again, unless Luca gave directives, I won out. You may as well get something of value out of me. I don't get this trade at all.

I mean, the Dallas Mavericks made the NBA finals last season. And in fairness, I did talk to some executives before the season started for, you know, season preview-type work. And some of them remarked to me that they felt like Dallas was a one-hit wonder as far as getting back to the finals. But didn't really have anything to do with Luca and any shortcomings he has. It was just more of the roster that there was a lot of credit being given that Kyrie, Kyrie Irving's shown that he can co-exist with Luca. He's a better leader that did get some roster depth.

You know, they drafted Derek lively the second. They're PJ Washington, great win player that just got Clay Thompson. But is it quite enough to compete in this very competitive Western Conference landscape? And when you're looking at this trade here, again, Anthony Davis is a

great player. He's going to coexist well with Kyrie Irving. But I don't think it really does anything as far as changing their playoff fortunes. It doesn't worsen it significantly in the short term. There's still a team that will be a tough playoff out, but I don't think that this catapults them in the Western Conference landscape. And I think the bigger thing is long term.

There's a lot of questions. All their core players, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Clay Thompson, they're getting older in age here. And where you contrast that with the Lakers, I think there's short-term questions about, even though Luca Dachich is a generational talent, how's the fit going to be with LeBron, James, and Luca, even though there's a lot of respect for each other,

just half a season's worth of games is that enough to really get the chemistry going? What are they going to do with the center position? And what are they going to do with their defense? I don't have any good defenders. But in the long term, the Lakers set themselves up to have that next generational superstar for whatever LeBron James decides to retire.

And that's obviously going to be soon because he's 40 years old. He still has a player option next year, but he's obviously said, he is toward the end of his career than the beginning of it. So, yeah, there's a lot to unpack and the contrast between what this means for the Lakers and the Mavericks couldn't be any clear. Mark Medina's with it's Mark G underscore Medina M-E-D-I-N-A. Are you really buying that LeBron didn't know anything about this before it went down? I do. I do buy it. actually. Look, I'm not going to be naive to say that LeBron James doesn't have influence on the Lakers. They obviously drafted Brawny James. They know how LeBron feels about things. But I think the context that we have to be aware of is that the Lakers dynamical LeBron James changed after the Russell Westbrook trade. Now, there's a lot of different versions depending on when you listen to the Lakers side of things or LeBron side of things as far as to what extent his voice actually carried weight with this Russell Westbrook trade.

You know, the Lakers would say, you know, LeBron really push for it at the 11th hour, even though they're about to get buddy healed. LeBron's people will say, yeah, he was in support of Russ, but it was in the larger context of the Lakers asking him, as well as other deals. So with that context being said since then, because that deal hasn't worked out, there's been a healthy distance where the Lakers really haven't factored in his input when it's specifically with trade deadline moves and free agency moves. And LeBron has been detached from that process because I think from his own self-interest,

he doesn't want to get signed blame if a deal goes bad and then says, yeah, well, this is what LeBron wanted. So I think we have to keep in mind that outside of them drafting Bronte James, and I know that that has sparked a lot of reaction anyway. The Lakers haven't done anything that has reflected what LeBron's wanted from personnel standpoint. I think with Brunney specifically, that calculus is a little bit different, where from the Lakers then, they didn't feel like they really gave up a lot because it's a second-round pick. Most second-round picks don't really pan out well that much.

He hasn't really played much in the actual NBA. It's mostly been G-League games. So, yeah, I do believe to your original question that he didn't know about it. Yeah, I just feel like he knows everything. And so that doesn't really make a difference at the point. The deal was still made. But I think I'm just naturally hesitant to believe that Rich Paul and LeBron did not have some sort of intel beforehand. Let me get to the Dallas side before we wrap things up with you.

Tell me exactly what we know about Mark Cuban's current role with the team. I know he sold the majority interest of the franchise. I know that their new ownership in the Dallas organization has casino ties. They have never hidden the fact they want to get casino gambling in Texas to build, I think, perhaps a future palis involving the Mavericks and a gambling casino, mono, mono. If there's conspiracy theories out there in Twitter, which I don't believe in, but you know what, for the sake of this crazy story, is the Dallas Mavericks long-term future in jeopardy if casino gambling does not come to Texas? That is a very fluid thing.

It's very hard to really answer that question because there's so many moving parts as it pertains to any moves, relocation or just having new business ventures. But I think to the original point that you're making about Mark Cuban, I think that this illustrates very clearly. He doesn't run things at all and pertaining to the basketball side.

Now, he might still have some role on the business side, but if it were up to Mark Cuban, they wouldn't be trading Luca Dodgers. I mean, he's already been on record in a very strong statement saying if he had to choose between, you know, staying with his wife or trading Luca, he would get his divorce papers ready.

A little strong, but that's what Mark Cuban is known to say. I think the bottom line is whether it was Luca or Dirk or any kind of generational talent. Mark Cuban was very a strong believer that you hold on to those legendary players

and don't make any exceptions whatsoever. Because there is the rumor that and again these are just rumors that if something falls apart in Dallas and the casino and the new ownership group doesn't get a casino that they would be willing to move the team to Las Vegas. I'm just curious because

You know Las Vegas is going to get an NBA franchise either through expansion or a franchise moving. It's just a matter of time. Yeah, and I think the one thing, again, these are moving parts, but I would be surprised just as an educated guess that there is a relocation. The NBA could have the power to exert things, and the NBA doesn't want relocation to happen. They want expansion to happen. They also want to make sure that, you know,

know, mid and small markets aren't a good position too. And so, you know, the MBA, now that there's not a commissioner that's having to be an acting owner with a franchise, they're not going to dig into personnel moves and say yes or nay on a deal. But they're, I think, going to be very active in making sure that all their different markets are well represented. And they feel like Dallas is a really strong market because of the history. So, again, a lot of fluidity. No one knows exactly how this will play out from the business end, but I'll be on record and say, and I'd be surprised that it would be any relocation.

It would be expansion. I got 30 seconds, and you've been awesome, Mark, as you normally are. I listen on the weekends. How long is Nico Harrison's leash in Dallas right this second? I think his leash is fine right the second, but this decision is obviously his legacy. see. So we're going to see very clearly how well this plays out. And again, I think the intriguing part about this is in the short term, I think they're going to be fine. They're a team that

has been up and down all season for different reasons. They're still going to be a player in the playoffs. But I think even prior to this trade, they're sealing with second round at best. I think where, you know, the chickens come home to roost, so to speak, is how things will look like, you the next two seasons with all this. Mark, thank you very much for the time. I don't know who it's going to be, but it's going to be a, not a mind-blowing like Donchich, but it'll be something impactful like the Deerrin Fox. something's going to happen. Do you consider Jimmy Butler in the top 20? I was just going to ask that. Yeah, let's put Jimmy Butler in there. Okay.

Number two, I really do believe the fatigue for the Chiefs' Eagles game is real. People are coming out of it. People are having Taylor fatigue, Kelsey fatigue. It's not a matchup we were looking forward to seeing. We were looking forward to seeing Buffalo or Detroit or Baltimore more play. Guys, when it's all said and done, this will not be a top 10 rated Super Bowl.

Jose Al-Tube is going to play a lot of let field. Even if Alex Bruegman does not sign with the Astros. I think Al-Tube's transition is beginning. It will be in full thrust if Bruegman gets here. it'll be subtle but expect Jose Altubi to get some serious left field playing time in 2020

so I'm throwing out number three I mean Lakers or Mavs can certainly make the second round dismissing both of them Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis probably enough to get in a second round you would think or the Lakers and what they have. If they're healthy.

It's just contingent upon them making another move.

I'll go one with you. All right. I do believe there is some fatigue for the Chiefs and the Eagles, but come on. It's the Super Bowl. It's Taylor Swift. It's a recognizable team. It's a huge media market in Philadelphia. Everybody's going to be watching it.

It's absolutely going to make the top 10. Now, that was an easy one to throw out. I wouldn't be surprised if both teams were out of the playoffs in the first round, but I can't predict that. That would not be a take I would fall on. The Lakers, if Luka gets back and they can behave and he and LeBron can work together, they're going to be dynamic right out of the jump. And look, Dallas does have another defensive threat that can help them win,

and Kyrie Irving has been playing well. Yeah, I couldn't bounce both them out easily. At the end of the day, I really believe that Jose Al-Tube is on his way to left field. And I can't believe I'm saying this, boys. This is, again, just an opinion not based on fact. But I don't think you throw this out to Jose Al-Tubei to say you're going to left field or thinking about it and then say, never mind. I think this has been something that's been in the works for the Astros, and they're going to try to figure out a way to get him to play some steady left field.

So towards the latter half of his major league career, it will not be at second base. It will be in left field. And that's the one I believe. So you believe he's getting 50 plus? Yeah, he could give 50 plus games this year. Yeah, that's what I believe. How can you say a top 20 players not getting traded then the rest of this deadline? I mean, I was just feeling.

In my, like Zion Williamson, I don't think is moving. I don't think Jimmy Butler's moving. I think now that Jimmy Butler just yesterday said he's not going. going to Golden State. I mean, he's basically telegraphing where he wants to go. And if Bradley Bill does not want to veto a trade to go out leaving Phoenix, it ain't happening. You can't

have those two ridiculous contracts on the one team with Duran and with Booker. So, I don't think a top 20 player is going. I think everything else is going to be just little stuff here and there. Okay. You seem upset.

They just traded away their best defender, their rim protector. And they're picking up one of the worst defenders of all time in losing.

And then offensively for the Lakers, you have two ball-dominant guys who like to massage the ball. They're both great passers, but who are they going to pass it to each other? I mean, so it's kind of like, I just don't see how the chemistry would work. Defensively, they're going to suffer greatly. And I think the Mavs got stronger with this trade. Okay, Vince, I would really, frankly see it the other direction. I would have to say that Vince, with all due respect, you're in the minority, like the big-time minority, unless you are maybe related to Nico Harrison. Yeah, there are going to be issues.

The questions that he raised are valid, but that doesn't mean that the tips the scales to the Dallas Mavericks winning this trade. Correct. And ultimately, you know what? If there's only one basketball for Luca and LeBron, guess who's getting it? Luca. And it's also not even about this year. I'm going to be right at the weight I am. I'm going to still let you have your boys out once or twice a month, and you're going to hang out with my parents once or twice a month. Ross, really quick before we get to this conversation we had with Mark Medina earlier, I don't think I've ever said I'm jealous for Dallas radio host, but I'm jealous for Dallas radio host. You get the Luca trade and Brian Schottenheimer as the Cowboys coach in one calendar week. You're doing pretty good for yourself.

Yeah, it's a little bit easier. But we've had our good times here, Matt. We had David Cully. We had the Astros. We had Lovie Smith. Super Bowl, I mean, World Series Championships? Yeah. Trade James Hardin Talk for like five years.

Is Matt Schaub and elite quarterback? We had that for a long time. Those were good times. Vince Young versus Reggie Bush, and then they went and got Mario Williams. Mario Williams? That was before my time, but yeah, I'd love to have that. What else is there? We've had that were a good old staples, at least from a Houston sports scene.

Matt Chobbilly quarterback, three first player pick, Dwight Howard Update kind of started at all. We were on the edge of our seats on that one. That was true. Kind of got the whole update thing started. All right. Mark Medina covers the Lakers on the West Coast. He's also an IHeart's NBA analyst.

You can hear on weekends here on these airwaves, and Mark and I had a chance to visit earlier today. He covers the Lakers, covers the NBA, and I asked him about how everybody meaning L.A., in particular Dallas, and Utah, for that matter, kept things secret. So when we all found out together,

we all did together, and we were all massively shocked. Yeah, it seems like that was part of the calculus. I thought it was notable that Nico Harrison and his press conference the other day was crying Rob Polinka for keeping this secret. They had some informal conversations

a few weeks ago, and it was very comforting to him that word didn't get out. So yes, when you look at certain deals like this or several years ago when the Lakers got Powell-Gissau in 2008 no one knew about this

I think at the same time though we're in a different era where things get out quickly there's a lot more people on staff or social media that any expectation that nothing is out in the open is fairly unrealistic but I think given the context of

they're talking about a generational star if it's out who knows how it affects the locker room and how Luca feels. And if a deal doesn't work out, you know, is it almost like the toothpaste is out of the tube? But again, I go back to what the Dallas Mavericks got in return. Anthony Davis is a great player. He's a defensive player of the year candidate. They are a playoff team.

But you could have gotten even more out of this. So I'm just really surprised that this is what they wound up green upon. I don't know. did you watch the press conference yesterday with Harrison and with Jason Kidd? I felt, first of a disappointed with Jason Kidd because I think he was a deer in headlines on this. And in Harrison's case, I just felt like he needed to backtrack in almost every single statement he said because people are probably in that room going, this sounds good, but you're full of crap. I thought it was notable when Nico said right next to Jason, hey, he didn't know about it, but he's on board.

and what Jason's supposed to say. I mean, he said he's on board, too. No one knew about this. It's just one of those things that, again, unless Luca gave directives, I won out. You may as well get something of value out of me. I don't get this trade at all. I mean, the Dallas Mavericks made the NBA finals last season. And in fairness, I did talk to some executives before the season started for, you know, season preview type work.

And some of them remarked to me that they felt like Dallas was a one-hit wonder as far as getting back to the finals. But didn't really have anything to do with Luca and any shortcomings he has. It was just more of the roster that there was a lot of credit being given that Kyrie Irving shown that he can co-exist with Luca. He's a better leader. They did get some roster depth. You know, they drafted Derek lively the second. They're PJ Washington great win player that just got Clay Thompson. but is it quite enough to compete in this very competitive Western Conference landscape?

And when you're looking at this trade here, again, Anthony Davis is a great player. He's going to coexist well with Kyrie Irving, but I don't think it really does anything as far as changing their playoff fortunes. It doesn't worsen it significantly in the short term. There's still a team that will be a tough playoff out, but I don't think that this catapults them in the Western Conference landscape. David, I think the bigger thing is long-term. There's a lot of questions. All their core players, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Clay Thompson, they're getting older and age here.

And where you contrast that with the Lakers, I think there's short-term questions about, even though Luca Dodgich is a generational talent, how's the fit going to be with LeBron, James, and Luca, even though there's a lot of respect for each other, just half a season's worth of games, is that enough to really get the chemistry going? What are they going to do with the center position?

and what are they going to do with their defense? I don't have any good defenders. But in the long term, the Lakers set themselves up to have that next-generational superstar for whatever LeBron James decides to retire. And that's obviously going to be soon because he's 40 years old. He still has a player option next year. But he's obviously said he's toward the end of his career than the beginning of it. So, yeah, there's a lot to unpack and the contrast between what this means for the Lakers

and the Mavericks couldn't be any clear. Mark Medina's with it's Mark G underscore Medina M-E-D-I-N-A. Whether's here from Athlon Sports, CBS-L-A spectrum, and of course you're hearing weekends on Fox Sports Radio right here on sports talks of any. Are you really buying that LeBron didn't know anything about this before it went down? I do. I do buy it, actually. Look, I'm not going to be naive to say that LeBron James doesn't have influence on the Lakers. They obviously drafted Brawny James. They know how LeBron feels about things.

the context that we have to be aware of is that the Lakers dynamical LeBron James changed after the Russell Westbrook trade. Now, there's a lot of different versions depending on when you listen to the Lakers side of things or LeBron's side of things as far as to

what extent. His voice actually carried weight with this Russell Westbrook trade. You know, the Lakers would say, you know, LeBron really pushed for it at the 11th hour, even though they're about to get buddy healed. LeBron's people will say, yeah, He was in support of Russ, but it was in the larger context of the Lakers asking him, as well as other deals.

So with that context being said since then, because that deal hasn't worked out, there's been a healthy distance where the Lakers really haven't factored in his input when it's specifically with trade deadline moves and free agency moves. And LeBron has been detached from that process because I think from his own self-interest, he doesn't want to get signed blame if a deal goes bad and then says, yeah, well, this is what LeBron wanted. So I think we have to keep in mind that outside of them drafting Brony James, and I know that that has sparked a lot of reaction anyway, the Lakers haven't done anything that has reflected what LeBron's wanted from personnel standpoint. I think with Brunney specifically, that calculus is a little bit different where from the

Lakers then, they didn't feel like they really gave up a lot because it's a second round pick. You know, most second round picks don't really pan out well that much. He hasn't really played much in the actual NBA. It's mostly been G-League games. So, yeah, I do believe to your original question that he didn't know about it. Yeah, I just feel like he knows everything. And so that doesn't really make a difference at the point. The deal was still made.

But I think I'm just naturally hesitant to believe that Rich Paul and LeBron did not have some sort of intel beforehand. Let me get to the Dallas side before we wrap things up with you. Tell me exactly what we know about Mark Cuban's current role with the team. I know we sold the majority interests of the franchise. I know that their new ownership in the Dallas organization has casino ties. They have never hidden the fact they want to get casino gambling in Texas to build, I think perhaps a future palis involving the Mavericks and a gambling casino, mono, mono.

if there's conspiracy theories out there in Twitter, which I don't believe in, but you know what, for the sake of this crazy story, is the Dallas Mavericks long-term future in jeopardy if casino gambling does not come to Texas? That is a very fluid thing. It's very hard to really answer that question because there's so many moving parts as it pertains to any moves, you know, relocation or just how. having new business ventures. But I think to the original point that you're making about Mark Cuban, I think that this illustrates very clearly he doesn't run things at all and pertaining to the basketball side.

Now, he might still have some role on the business side, but if it were up to Mark Cuban, they wouldn't be trading Luca Dantra. I mean, he's already been on record in a very strong statement saying if he had to choose between, you know, staying with his wife or trading Lucas. he would get his divorce papers ready. A little strong, but that's what Mark Cuban is known to say. I think the bottom line is whether it was Luca or Dirk or any kind of generational talent. Mark Cuban was very, you know, a strong believer that you hold on to those legendary players

and don't make any exceptions whatsoever. All right, that again needs Mark Medina out from Los Angeles, Fox Sports Radio, NBA analysts. He also works on Sportsnet Central LA. Ross, I did check Mark Cuban's Twitter account. He has not tweeted or responded anything in two days. Interesting. Is Silence Golden or is he just really busy and doesn't have time to run to his social platforms? He probably doesn't know what to say.

He's not the majority owner anymore, correct? Correct. Yeah, there's a woman that is running a casino that the plans are for her when she bought the team was to ultimately gel her NBA franchise with a large casino in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Interesting. I mean, part of it,

I don't know a whole lot behind the story, but a lot of it is that she's a casino operator and that she must know something that maybe Texas is closer than we think it is to getting casino gambling. Well, if she's bought off enough politicians. That's how it works in this country. Did you say that loud sports, RV? Am I wrong?

Well, maybe she is. I don't know. But part of the conspiracy theory, and again, it's just a conspiracy, is that maybe the Mavericks are tanking that it would be better served if they were to go somewhere else. I don't know what their least situation is at American Airlines Center. I can't imagine the Mavericks leaving Dallas under any reason.

That's too big of a medium market. Too good. Just too much. Too much money there, too much. And if you're going to put Vegas game of a franchise, you're going to give them expansion team, let them start from scratch. The Las Vegas 21s. Never, ever, ever going to happen.

It hurts my feelings. I'm sorry, Matt. Well, you know, the reason why I thought they wouldn't be called the 21s because you wouldn't want to have the number issue, but the 76ers don't write the word 76ers on their jersey. They write Sixers. That's true. And the Denver Nuggets have a uniform that has 5280 across their chest.

Pay me an ungodly amounts of money to be the offensive coordinator. Yeah, ungodly amounts. Did you see how much he's getting, according to Chris Gordy? Is Smith-Morkeying the story? No, I guess he got it from somewhere else, but he's the only place I saw it. Tell him. $6 million a year for Chip Kelly. The highest paid OC, I think it was Todd Munkin with the Ravens making $3 million.

I wonder he left. But you don't know. If you live in Vegas, it costs the living, right? More expensive? I don't think the cost of living is low as long as you stay out of the casinos. Yeah, maybe he can't do that. Yeah, Albert Brewer is saying $6 million a year. That is insane.

That is absolutely insane. Double the next highest paid coordinator on the whole league. And oh, by the way, every other coordinator in the NFL is like, you get it, Chip. Thanks for setting the bar for us. That's crazy. The issue is, I'm trying to look at what Domeko Ryan's makes. It says he was signed in the head coach in 2023, six-year deal worth $28 million. So no wonder, Chip Kelly wasn't in the mix.

You were not going to pay your OC more than your head coach. God, Ross, $6 million for one half of the ball, and all you got to do is make sure that half is good. If your team loses 37 to 34, you don't care. You put up 34. as you mentioned, this is great for Chip Kelly. Fewer headaches and more money. Yeah. And no worrying about NIL recruiting. Good for him.

It's like, you know, when coaches would leave the professional ranks to go to the college ranks because they're like, I don't want to mess with the money and the free agency and people getting mad or free agency. Ross, college doesn't offer that like you used to. Remember you used to? You just have to just have to make the kids, make sure they go to school.

Yeah. You're able to re-recruit them every year. year and find new, find new cash for him. Yeah, you're dealing with free agents and they're, I mean, more emotionally volatile as, you know, naturally 20-year-old, more than a 30-year-old grown man who has all their finances said. It's going to be different. So let me ask you this. What is the number one advantage for being a college coach over at NFL? I'll give you two.

One. Oh, okay. Lesser games, comparable money. I guess, but it's... So your stress level is not nearly the... much because you're not having to worry about extra games. I think it was 15, was it 15 games? Coach Sark had to coach this year. Yeah, but only one person is doing, or two people are doing it, three.

Okay, so that's not much of an argument. But the number two is you still get to run it more than other. I don't know, do you get to run? But before talking about coaches who are going to have their pick of NFL or college, it's going to be those coaches playing 13, 14, 15 games a year. Yeah. Nobody's looking for the guy that's not making his conference chance. chip game and not even putting

on the NFL spheres. So what is the biggest advantage of being a college coach over pro coach? You still get to be this GMO? Does I mean this chief operating officer more so do you want NFL? If you're into that,

I guess you are you are you more celebrated? Let's go to college. You have to win. You have to graduate your kids. You got to make sure they don't get into drugs and alcohol and guns. speeding and any number of things. It's being.

Where the NFL handles that for you if you're an NFL coach. You don't do this one on that. No. Just pass them off the NFL. You have NIL to worry about. You have the transfer portal to get to. I mean, tell me the significant advantages of being a college coach.

I don't see them. Not like they used to be. I mean, maybe you're more of the, is Nick Sabin more celebrated in the state of Alabama? He's like a god there. You become more of a god and more of a mythic figure or a legendary. But that's about it. But your leash is a lot shorter in college than it used to be.

You're making $6, $7 million years a head coach. If you don't win games in two years, you're done. Ryan Day, if there wasn't an expanded playoff this year, he might have been fired. Yeah, that's crazy. It's absolutely crazy. For losing two games. So, you know, mama's out there. Teach your kids to be NFL coaches because the college game ain't as cool as it used to be.

It just not. Still cool. Yes, Ohio State played 16 games. That's an NFL slate. But it's funny that Ryan Day didn't show any stress at all because his beard was still... Jet Black. Jet Black. Good for him. 713-212-5-790.
