Yeah.
Lunch timers.

12-03 and H-Town.
What's happening in lunchtimmers?
Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Thursday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
Okay.
Feel what?
The NFL schedule release.
turn it up.
Get people excited for this thing.
You hear me?
It is time for us
to guess
and guess again
and then guess again.
Joe George, it is
NFL schedule release day,
I say.
Can you feel it?
I can feel it, Matt.
I don't think you can feel it.
What is it your feeling?
Complacency?
Indifference.
I feel a 9 and 7th
schedule.
You know what?
I'm not going to have you two ruin the most exciting day in sports.
Okay.
Y'all are a bunch of frauds.
You call yourself NFL fans.
I will not be sitting, squatting down and watching three hours of Texans programming, or
I'm sorry, NFL programming about the schedule release.
Well, you're the only one that won't be because I'm going to be in front of my tube watching
week 13 breakdown of games.
How are they going to make that a three-hour broadcast?
They do every year.
There are a nimmer.
right now talking about what matter of fact you know what i'm going to do it right now go ahead

Let me ask people.
It's a gigantic waste of time.
I think...
Where'd Joe go?
I think people want to hear this.
You went to the bathroom.
I don't know.
Can you play the instapult music yourself?
I'm going to ask you a question.
Would you like to hear what I think the 17 game week schedule
is going to be for the Texans?
What game shows the insipole music from?
That's from chain reaction.
So you're going to play it off your computer?
Where the hell did Joe go?
Maybe he had to go for a quick smoke break.
I don't know.
We've just started the show and he's gone already.
Here we go.
Oh, here we go.
This is good.
Play it.
Turn it up as loud as you can.
That's as loud as it goes.
This is awful.
Now we're playing the hiss off your computer.
Do you all hear the instant music in the background?
I'll go in there and hit the music.
All right.
So here's the instipal question.
Do you want to hear my project?
I have it here on my iPhone.
I typed this up last night while I was watching God knows what on television.
Do you want to hear my 17 week predicted Texan schedule?
If you do, 713-212579, yes or no?
Because it really doesn't become a poll until we hear the music.
Oh, there's Joe back with us.
Good to have you, Joe with us on the show today.
He had to go get his food.
Oh, that's the reason why I left.
Okay, I understand.
Food greater than show.
Oh, there it is.
It's time for an insta poll.
713-212-5-7-90.
7-13-21-2-5-7-90.
The answer is either yes or no.
Do you want to hear my predictions on the Texans schedule?
Line 3 on the instant poll, yes or no, on my predictions of a schedule?
Maybe.
That doesn't count, but thank you for playing.
We don't accept maybe he's in the show, Joe, George.
Line 4 on the Instapult, do you want to hear my protections prediction schedule?
For love of God, no.
I'll take that as a no.
7-1-3-2-1-2-1-2.
Because it was a definitive no.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-90.
Line 1, do you want to hear my predictions on the Texan schedule?
No.
What kind of audience is this?
I spent minutes on this yesterday, guys.
Line 2, do you want to hear my Texans prediction schedule?
I would love to.
Oh, that's one vote.
There you go, Matt.
What do we say about the Instapal, Ross?
It never lies.
It does never lie.
Except that sometimes it does.
Line one, you want to hear my predictions on the Texan schedule?
This is believe it or not, do you?
Oh, no, that's a second yes vote.
Line three, do you want to hear my predictions on the Texan schedule?
No.
No, that's three nos.
All right, one more.
Line five, you want to hear my predictions on the Texan schedule?
There is nothing else going on in sports that I want to hear more.
That's true because there's nothing else going on in sports.
That's 3-3.
The next person.
It's a game 7.
We'll decide whether or not I run through.
Look at what I did, Joe.
I spent 10 minutes yesterday on my phone typing this up.
Please let that hard work not go for anything.
Line 2.
Do you want to hear this schedule what I think it's going to be?
Line 2.
Line 3.
Do you want to hear my schedule?
Yes.
There you go, Matt.
That's it.
Because the people have spoken, the insuboles closed,
here is what I think the Texan schedule is going to be.
Week one, they will be at Kansas City on Thursday night to open up the season.
Okay.
Okay.
Week two, at Detroit to take on the Lions.
One in one.
Week three.
home for Minnesota.
Week four at Chicago.
Two and two.
Week five, home for Jacksonville.
Three and two?
Week six, off week.
Week seven at Indianapolis.
Three and three.
Week eight, home for Tennessee.
Week nine at Cleveland.
Week 10 at Jacksonville.
Week 11, home for Indianapolis.
Week 12, home for Green Bay.
Week 13, home for Baltimore.
Week 14, at Pittsburgh, at 15, Cincinnati, 16, home New England.
The close-out-the-season at New Tennessee and week 17.
There it is.
I've done it.
That's what show prep is all about, Ross.
That's what this show does that others will not do.
I got him at 9 and 7.
Do you want me to do the Chicago Bears schedule, Joe?
Duh, Bears.
He shook his head, no.
That's not good.
That's not good.
I'm here to do it for all 32 teams if you want me to.
Well, if you're doing the full schedule prediction, Matt, why don't you predict results,
injuries, trades?
Tomorrow.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
A full season simulation.
I can't give you all your Christmas presents on one day.
Along with scandals.
So it's today Christmas Eve then if tomorrow's Christmas Day?
Today's Christmas Eve, you got one year for me.
It's just the Texan schedule.
You got the Texas schedule in my mind.
All right.
Now, is it accurate?
Probably not.
No, it's accurate.
Well, I mean, is it more or less accurate than a perfect March madness bracket?
Oh.
See?
Just saying.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have James Click, the Astros General Manager, is going to join us at the bottom of the hour.
Wonderful.
But we're going to have to go with another topic in the next segment.
I know that scheduled talk is huge.
Earl Thomas might be just bigger.
Excuse me.
Excuse me.
The Earl Thomas story might be bigger.
Yeah, go ahead and clip that, Joe.
No, Joe, don't clip it.
No need to.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
James clicked, bottom of the hour.
An Earl Thomas update.
If you haven't heard it, just sit back, relax, and enjoy it.
And if you're Earl Thomas' brother, you have some explaining to do.
12-12 on 7-90.
Hey, it's Lance McCullors.
Back to Matt Thomas.
Curveball, swinging a mid-strike three.
I'm Sports Talk 790.
Your home for Houston Astros baseball.
Again, James Click, Astros, General Manager,
just to catch up on some things,
really nothing overly newsworthy.
Although, there continues to be conversation
about the majorly baseball season,
if you have not heard it,
and it feels like every day this is changing.
But the very latest
has a season starting perhaps
as early as June 10th.
that seems a bit early, maybe significant early, June 10th.
More likely could start July 1st.
June 10th could be when spring training resumes, frankly, if you want to think about that.
The look of the season will be determined by an agreement between the league and its union.
Multiple executives suggested as many as 50 players will be available for teams,
and that they'll have active rosters of up to 30 players each.
That makes all sense, boys, right?
Nothing wrong with that.
50 players per team.
Yeah, that's basically having.
20 of your best minor leaguers on standby.
Ready to go.
Length of the season would be anywhere between 80 and 100 games.
We'll talk to James Click about that coming up in a little bit.
Now, the story we all woke up to this morning, Ross.
What would that be, Matt?
Earl Thomas.
One of the better defensive players in this decade in the NFL, safe to say, right?
A Longhorn great.
A guy that when I had my shoulders worked on a few years ago was rehabbing at the table next to me.
Really?
So Earl and I were able to not break bread, but talk shop.
Are you all related?
Same last name?
Nope.
And I went on Twitter today to verify that I'd tell everybody that yes, indeed,
but he and I are not brothers.
He has a wife, Nina.
Mm-hmm.
Nina and Earl apparently got into a fight over his drinking.
So Earl said I've had enough of this conversation.
I'm going to leave, and I'm going to have my brother, Seth, pick me up.
I'm sure that happens.
Well, Nina, that's Nina Thomas, decided to check in on Earl's whereabouts by logging into his Snapchat account.
That's when Nina says she found video of Earl with another woman.
Now, see, that's the detail that I need clarification on.
I cannot give it to you, but go ahead and try.
How does the woman that he's with sent him a snap of them together, and she was logged in and saw that?
We don't know if that woman's that day or something at a woman in the past.
We don't even know.
But it's another woman.
That's a good point.
Nina said she used Earl's Snapchat account to track his location to a nearby Airbnb rental home.
She then says she called up two other women, presuming her friends, to help her confront Earl at the pad.
Meaning, I'm not going to go one-on-one.
Yeah, she got the squad together.
Correct.
Nina at that point also claims she grabs Earl's pistol in the process.
with the intention to, quote, scare him.
When Nina's friends, the other women arrived at the house,
they all went to that Airbnb,
where they, quote, discovered Earl and Seth, Earl's brother,
naked in bed with other women.
That's when Nina admits she pulled out the gun
and put it into girls and into Earl's head,
stating that she took the magazine thinking that the gun could not fire.
But cop said Nina was unaware,
the gun had a round in the chamber.
Whoopsy-dazy.
Cops said one of the women in the house shot cell phone video of the incident,
which they say shows Nina pointing the gun on Earl's head,
quote, from less than a foot away.
It can clearly be seen that Nina's finger was on the trigger and the safety is disengaged.
Okay. First of all, how can we clearly see from this cell phone video that the safety is
disengaged? I don't know if I believe that.
Also, who is take it? Now, it says one of the women in the house taking the video.
Now, is that one of Earls and his brother's sex pots,
or is that one of Nina's...
My guess is that you are one of the women in the bed
that's taking the video of this.
And you're like, this is about to get in.
This woman's about...
I'm scared.
Right.
So you're naked, you're having sex with Earl and Seth Thomas,
and then all of a sudden this lady busts in.
So you grab your phone.
You want to film the incident and make sure you capture the moment.
Yeah.
Fortunately for Earl, cops of the Ravens defensive back
was able to wrestle the gun away from her.
Cops of the cell phone video also shows Nina striking Earl in the nose before it ends.
cops also spoke with Earl who essentially corroborated the story, adding that Nina repeatedly hit him while he attempted to take the firearm away.
The woman also claimed there's a woman that says that Nina's other friends were carrying a knife and swinging aggressively during the altercation as well.
Yeah, it's like you have somebody running the show and somebody with crowd control.
So cops would then arrest Nina and the members, and it says in her story, not me saying this, and members of her posse.
Nina was booked for a burglary of a residence with intent to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, family violence, and then she later bonded out.
I believe she also has a restraining order.
She can't get within 200 or protective order or something.
She can't get within 200 yards of Earl or any of the women he was abetting at the time.
So we're going to go blue here for a very short period of time.
What do you mean?
Well, there's going to be some really questions that may not be appropriate for all age groups.
We'll start with you, George, George.
Joe, you've got a brother.
Yes, I do.
Could you and your brother ever fathom being in a situation like that?
Absolutely not.
Reasons for that is?
I'm not doing that with my brother.
Near my brother, anything.
Pass.
No interest.
Really, at that point, social distancing has nothing to do with anything, correct?
Yeah, I know.
Not social distancing.
I've known your brother for almost as long as I've known you.
That's true.
And we've gotten into some precarious situations over the years.
I wouldn't say that's, I don't know about that.
Well, we had to take the one prostitute and had her kicked out.
That's, that's not true.
She was going to come out to the room.
That's not true.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Okay.
So I'll ask the same question.
I'll ask you the same question that I asked of you,
to ask of Joe.
Could you and your brother ever fathom being in a situation like that?
Yeah, well, I'm in an argument with somebody.
He picks me up and, you.
You know, need to have somebody to talk with?
Of course.
Yeah, I would do that with my brother.
Let's take it a step further.
Could you and your brother ever be in the same bed, completely naked, with other women in it?
I mean, we've been in the same bed clothed.
You share a room at a hotel, stuff like that.
Sure, sure.
But no.
I don't believe we've ever or ever will be engaged in sexual relationships.
I just think there is proper social distancing when it comes to another man.
You know, but some siblings are closer than other.
you know, who are we to judge the Thomas family?
They're very close.
One more question. Again, this is not, this is for mature audiences only.
What's the size of the bed?
If there's two adult men already in it.
That's cool. It's minimum of king.
If you're getting an Airbnb, Earl Thomas is not booking the Airbnb with bunk, bunk twin beds.
That's a valid point.
Last question, then we're going on to General Manager James Click.
what's the proper ratio?
What do you mean?
Joe knows what I mean.
Two to one.
Two guys, one girl? That's possible.
I mean, it could happen.
You're saying...
They have those on the internet.
You're thinking four were men, two men.
Yeah.
In one king size bed.
Could be one and a half to one.
Here's Earl Thomas to give us the latest details of his life in the last six weeks.
So my agent just hit me and said that I'm going to be on...
TMZ tomorrow from an altercation that happened with me and Nina.
So I just wanted to get ahead of it.
And I mean, it's really not anybody's business.
It pissing me off that it got out, but it's the world we live in today.
But instead of talking about this, just keep us in your prayers.
And stuff like this happens, bro.
We try to live the best lives we possibly can, but sometimes we don't go as plan.
Just pray for us as we go through this stuff.
We're back talking.
You know, I'm seeing my kids.
So just keep us in your prayers.
We got a lot of prayers.
How do you go to the Lord on that one?
You go, hey, I got this friend.
His name is Earl.
Dear 8 pounds, 6 ounce, baby Jesus.
And he and his brother were naked.
And his wife came in and caught us with a bunch of other women.
We don't know the exact number.
and she wanted to kill him.
So can you please pray for their health and wellness?
And his drinking issues, apparently.
And stuff like this happens, bro.
Yeah, it's stuff like this happens, Matt.
I mean, who hasn't been in a bed with their brother with several naked women
and then have their wife burst in on them with a gun
while their friend is wielding a knife and threatening everyone?
If I had a nickel for every time that happened.
That's a typical Thursday for a lot of people.
Yeah.
I mean, we've all been there, Matt.
Have we?
Could happen to anybody.
Does it happen to radio people or just professional athletes?
Just everyone, Matt.
Okay.
Any Jimmy or Joe on the street?
Or Earl for that, man.
Or an Earl and a Seth.
All right.
I just wanted to pass that along.
That's some of the, that's a great non-Florida story.
We just buried it.
We just used it too early in the show.
We've got non-flora stories coming up at 2.30 today.
Joe, you're going to have to do a better job and you gave us the last week or so.
I don't feel good.
I don't feel confident.
Well, you shouldn't because your last two have completely sucked.
I know.
That's why I don't feel good about this.
Can I just read this headline real quick?
Sure one out.
You know, is Google and Earl Thomas.
There's a Twitter account called Bossip.
Are you aware of Bossip?
I have not.
I'm not.
It is the premier destination for Black A.F.
pop culture and entertainment,
plus the best headlines in the net.
They have 339,000 followers.
Doing well.
Their headline is,
Bang Bros.
Slizzard, Strong, safety, Earl Thomas,
and Schlong.
slang and sibling Seth caught in the same bed smashing two women's defensive backs to smithereens by Nina pack and wife, Nina on Snapchat.
Seth three times fast.
It's a mouthful.
General manager James Click of the Astros.
We do a complete 180.
We talk some baseball next.
It's 1228 on 790.
Hey, it's James Arden.
What a pass.
What a finish.
Listen to your home of the rockets on your smart speaker.
Just as.
Hey, Google, play Sports Talk 790 on IHR Radio.
That is something else, folks.
Our time is 1231.
It is the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
We are happy to be joined now by the first year general manager of the Houston Astros, James Click, who, I don't know if he's getting any more information than we are.
But, man, it feels like every single day there's a new development in terms of a startup again.
James, thanks for the time.
I appreciate it coming on.
How often are you getting updates?
It's not that you have to give away all the information, but how much is there a communication line between each individual team and the Major League Baseball Office about when hopefully you guys will start up again?
Yeah.
First of all, thanks for having me on.
It's a good question.
There are many, many avenues of communication because we have to coordinate all sorts of aspects of the possibility of starting back up.
You know, primarily it's a medical conversation about the logistics of,
getting the clubhouses to the point where they're safe, maintaining social distance,
and how do we do that in a competitive environment?
And then obviously you have to loop in the business side, you have to loop in the players
and the players' association, you have to loop in the front offices so that, you know,
we can talk about what this will look like.
So there are many, many avenues and communication.
Some of them are very frequent.
Some of them are less so because there's just less to talk about.
Yeah.
I think it's obvious from all of the different plans that have been put out there publicly
that we are trying to make sure that whenever we get the green light from the medical people,
from the government's municipalities, all that, that we have a plan that's ready to go
so we can get out there as quickly as possible.
If I was to look at your daytime or your schedule, and I think you've got some meetings
today, and I appreciate you joining me before you get to those, how much are you talking about
the operation of the team on the field and how much of it right now is about just trying
to get to sport back on its back on its feet.
Yeah, we're unfortunately a little bit limited on what we can do with the team on the field
because they're the transaction freeze.
And so it's interesting because I spend a ton of time on the phone every day,
sometimes with other general managers.
And normally we'd be talking about trades or ways to improve our team or ways to try to
line up on things.
And because of the transaction freeze, we're just unable to do that.
And everybody is focused on getting back.
out there, getting out on the field, figuring out how we do that as safely as possible.
So, like I said, when we get the green light, we're ready to go.
Rossville, we're out here, James.
And what's the communication like with the players and with Dusty?
Is their daily group communication individually?
How's that going for you?
It's kind of all of the above.
Dusty and I talk regularly, sometimes about wine.
Because he's out there in Sacramento at a winery.
But, you know, a lot of times we're talking about when we get back out there, you know, what is he wants that to look like?
How does he want to operate the dugout?
Who is he going to be leaning on for various decisions and how are we going to run a game plan?
And then with the players, it's always the balance, right?
Because we want to check in with them as much as possible to let them know that, you know, things are moving or we're trying to find a way to get this back going.
But we also don't want to bother them too much.
And, you know, where out you're welcome, so to speak.
They're professional.
They know how to keep themselves in shape.
And unfortunately, you know, there's not a lot of news to give them a lot of times.
You can say, hey, this is something that has been considered,
but it is nothing more than an idea at this point.
It is just an idea.
It's just a plan in case we get going.
So we don't all need to start packing our bags for Arizona if that's what you're wondering.
Yeah, and what is their general feeling, just the players?
Like, what's the consensus you think in your mind about kind of balancing,
wanting to play games, but also wanting to be with their families
and wanting things to be normal, even though we can't really do that, considering the circumstances.
Yeah, there's no right answer there.
But, you know, the guys that I talk to, especially the guys with young families, are hypersensitive
to the potential to, you know, go into a quarantine situation just to start playing games again.
And none of us wants to put that burden on our families, especially those with young kids.
And so that is another consideration that goes into all of these different plans about
out how are we going to start this back up again?
It's how to we make sure that not only the physical health of the players and the staff
is protected, but the emotional health of all of them dealing with, you know, the stress
that this is putting on all of our families.
It's a tough balancing act.
So you're telling me that Dusty Baker has asked you to join one of his Zoom meetings.
Is this accurate?
I have seen Dusty on the camera on the computer.
I've seen his office.
He's got a much nicer office than I do out there.
So, yeah, we're all getting up to speed on this.
I mean, you know, if I have a problem, I just call my 8-year-old, and he comes up and shows me how to do it.
He showed me how to change the background, so I'm on the Death Star or something like that.
And then Dusty, the same thing.
He's got to sound Darren out there who's a junior account right now.
He always jokes that if he had to probably just call Darren and Darren fixes it.
So we're all being on the younger generation all this out of that.
That's for sure.
James Click Astros, General Manager, with us.
Have you moved your family here now, or has all this pandemic kind of slow that down as well?
Well, I mean, how much time yet?
Well, I got to 3 o'clock, but I don't take commercial breaks.
You've got some meetings doing up in half an hour, so it's up to you.
You say as long as you want.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I do, and I appreciate you got squeezing in before the meeting.
Yeah, we are trying to get out there as fast as we can.
But as we can imagine, with, you know, getting hired at the beginning of February,
you know, we were having a spring in Tampa, St. Pete, and so the school year was over
so not to disrupt the kids, but, you know, the world had other plans for that. So, yeah,
we're going to be out there very, very soon, definitely before the draft, just kind of working
on final details. All right. Well, obviously, this delay helps Justin Verlander in a sense
that he wouldn't be missing time on the disabledist. He spoke with the media last week.
How often can you get in contact with him, perhaps his rehab plan, the doctors he's spoken
to where are you in terms of where he is?
He sounded encouraged.
I'm assuming you're sounding encouraged as well.
Yeah, and I like to let a guy like JV kind of take care of himself.
I mean, he is a true professional.
He knows his body.
He's been through this injury before.
So he has the experience of having to get back or how to get back.
And he talks with our trainers daily.
He keeps us up to speed on exactly what's going on.
But he doesn't need me breathing down his neck asking him, you know,
how his black feels and how his groin feels and everything else and you know how the ball is coming out
and you know he's wearing a mask and et cetera so um we touch base when when you know it's called for by
other issues or you know if i want to just get to try to take his temperature on what he's thinking about
how to start this back up but in terms of the medical aspects of things you know he's a pro and we've
got our athletic training staff they're keeping out close eye on him what have you told not necessarily
you per se, but all the general managers about the minor leaguers, because we're hearing various
numbers about how big the rosters are going to be, what kind of activity they will have,
if they go to Arizona or Florida, go to their home stadium, whatever the end game is.
What have you told the minor league system, you know, all a couple hundred of them, about
what their future is going to be for 2020?
Yeah, it's a really good question.
And I think you've hit the nail on the head in terms of why this is much more complicated than it seems like on a surface.
level of trying to get baseball back out there in the field because you're not just dealing
with a 26-man roster.
And especially in these times when there will be additional screening and safety protocols
for entry into clubhouses, you know, I expect that we're going to rely on minor league
players or guys who are in minor league rosters right now to help us out, just like we would
in any professional baseball season.
It's just going to be more so these days.
And this is another one of those issues that everybody is scrambling and, you know, and
and working as hard as they can to try to figure it out.
But unfortunately, the best thing that we can say right now is that we don't know.
And as much as we don't like to say that and we don't like to tell people that there are things that are uncertain,
I think all of us are recognizing that a lot of the world in the launch of baseball is pretty uncertain right now.
And James, you're a guy who was hired a few months after any other general manager late in the game.
So your head was kind of spinning in the fact that you have to learn the Astros organization and you have to get to hit the ground running.
And then this happens.
Can you just take us through, I mean, what was your mindset from February where it kind of probably felt like a whirlwind to where this all has it slowed down for you or has it just continued to be hectic?
What does it been like for you?
Well, at least now I have company with 29 other GMs who are also trying to deal with their heads spin all over the place and trying to figure out a bunch of problems that we've never really seen before.
Yeah, I mean, when I first got there, I knew, I think I knew what I was getting into and had an idea of kind of the, of kind of the,
the things that we were going to have to deal with.
But it was a very, not a lonely situation, but no other team was going through that.
Now at least, you know, when you have conversations with other teams and other general managers,
all of us can compare notes and say, okay, you know, these are the crises that we're having
to deal with.
These are the things that we're trying to solve.
Does anybody have a good idea?
And everybody just says, you know, we've never been for anything like this before.
So there's no playbook.
We're just going to have to figure it out.
Last question.
And I feel like we've asked you a lot of things that the answers are.
I don't know, but just sometimes you're a reassuring voice and we trust your valued opinion.
You know, obviously in the middle of spring training, you're trying to get this season started and then everything comes to a crashing halt.
I'm going to assume, James, that most of the players have not faced much live batting.
I'm going to assume that guys are not rigorously throwing like they would as they were getting ready for the start of the season.
In your mind, how long would it take for effectively your roster, for that matter, any major league baseball roster, to get tuned up?
So that first set of games, especially if it's only an 80 or 100 game schedule,
we're seeing the players at their best and that no one can say, well,
it took us 20 or 25 games to kind of get acclimated to playing baseball again.
Yeah, well, you guys are doing a good job asking really good questions.
This is an active conversation among all areas of the organization.
It's an active conversation with the players.
You know, hitters and pitchers, obviously, are on very different schedules.
veterans and rookies will be on different schedules.
You know, we have debates about how valuable is it to have, you know,
spring training games against other teams versus can we just do this inter-squad?
You know, how valuable is it to actually get through nine-ending games or back-to-back
or these kinds of things?
And there's so much that goes into getting ready for a major league baseball to see them.
You know, fortunately, Dusty's been through this before.
I mean, he's been through a couple of strikes.
He keeps talking about, you know, back in 18.
where they had, you know, a couple of weeks to get ready, and they did.
So, you know, I have that benefit of working with somebody who's actually been through something
sort of similar to that.
And we're going to lean very heavily on Dusty and obviously the medical staff and the players themselves
to try to figure that out.
But, you know, among all the things that we don't know, that's just another one.
And we'll try to figure it out.
That's more than brief I think that we can work out based on Dusty's experience, our trainers,
our players.
We'll figure it out.
But, you know, that's the reason that we're having to do.
having discussions about different roster configurations and things like that to address the short
runway that we may have.
Well, we are such vested baseball fans and of your organization in particular.
So thank you for spending some time with us.
I know we're still in a bunch of what eb's out there, but it's just good for us to kind of
talk baseball with somebody in the industry.
So we thank you for sparing some of your time with us today.
And we look forward to having you on the next time when it's a much more encouraging detail
about we definitely have a plan in place and looking forward to a season.
So again, James, thanks very much for the time this afternoon.
and we greatly appreciate it.
Same, guys. Thank you.
All right, take care of yourself.
James Click, Astros, General Manager with us here on the Matt Thomas show.
And again, I appreciate his, you know, he doesn't know anymore, Franklin,
and then a lot of us do, even those that are in the speculation world.
But it's just nice to have somebody that's thinking about the plan
and putting together a plan in place, which again, major league baseball,
it feels like to me, Ross, I could be wrong.
It feels like they're trying to take a step ahead of this.
They're the ones that are feeling like they've got,
And again, this could all just be up in the air and just guessing on my part.
They feel like they're pushing it a little faster than maybe even the NBA is at this point,
even though the NBA probably has the smallest window to get a season finished off.
So you're saying you can feel it.
Like the text is prediction of schedule?
Yeah, exactly.
You can feel it.
All right, 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
John Cheat chances.
I'm the only one not liking his answers?
Well, here's the problem.
He doesn't have definitive answers.
It's more speculation.
So if you are looking for, yes, I know the dropped dead date on these things,
you'd like the answers.
But if you don't, because he doesn't know.
And you can't blame him for that because I think there are different scenarios in play almost every single day.
713-21257.9 is how you reach our show.
It is a Matt Thomas show.
We take you to 3 o'clock today.
We'll do it right now with a message here for Shaw's Jewry at the corner of West
Gray and Montrose. I'm so happy that they're around for Mother's Day because a lot of you,
your mothers, the wives in your life, the grandmother's aunts, whoever have been adding additional
duties behind beyond just taking care of your everyday family needs. They've been teaching your
kids. They have been making sure they're doing their homework. They have been keeping them
occupied and interested in a variety of things. So you know what? Maybe something extra special.
This Mother's Day is exactly what she needs. And that's why you go to Shaw's jewelry at the
corner West Gray and Montrose. They've been at the same intersection.
since 1966.
They love tradents.
If you're looking to give her an upgrade of some sort,
bring in that old piece of jewelry,
and they can upgrade it for you
and make it worth your while.
They also have a great selection
of pre-owned Rolexes,
for those of you that are looking to upgrade
what's on your wrist,
or if she's looking for a diamond tennis bracelet,
a gorgeous diamond stud,
or the diamond ring upgrade
she's been asking about,
you can do it today at Shaw's jewelry.
They are open Monday through Friday, 10 to 7.
Saturdays they go 10 to 6.
Family-owned, family-operated since the 1960s,
do yourself a favor when it comes to a place to go to get a good selection.
And sometimes you're just looking online isn't going to cut it.
You need to see it for yourself.
See it today at Shaw's Jewelry, the corner of West Gray and Montrose.
When I listen to the Matt Thomas Show, I don't even understand the eclectic nature of the show,
the dichotomy, the ostentatiousness, the perfunctory that sounds about as smart as LeVar Ball.
Back to the Matt Thomas Show, whoever he is.
Well, it appears I have lost Ross for the rest of the show because he is spending an exorbitant amount of time looking at Earl Thomas memes.
Some of the best ones will be on the one.
You know what? I'll tweet it out right now.
What is your favorite?
There's the one.
You know the video of Isaiah Thomas talking about being on the dream team on Last Dance?
He said, I met the criteria to be selected.
But I don't know what went into the process, but I met the criteria to be selected.
and I wasn't selected.
They said Earl Thomas's wife not being
invited to the
Trist. Gang bang.
No.
Can you say that?
No.
Okay.
No.
Okay.
Well, I put a bunch of the really good ones out on Twitter.
I just tweeted.
I just tweeted it at Sports RV.
And one of my favorite things is the file photo.
I have of Earl Thomas on his knees with his arms spread out.
Oh, no.
Seriously, we have a lot of children to listen to the show.
Hi.
So we can't say what you just said.
Oh.
And I don't want to use the O word.
Okay.
Well, this is a, if you have, this is not a children's show, though.
I know, but you have, you have adult men that may have you taken their kids somewhere for, drop them some off.
And I, you know.
Okay.
Well, sometimes.
We need a code word.
Well, sometimes you're watching the TV with the kids and something inappropriate gets said.
It's just, it's part of life.
It is.
Not invited to the huddle?
Yeah.
No, is the, is the bed the huddle?
Oh, a large group.
Do we?
Oh, we need to go in the huddle.
I like that, actually.
We need to go in the huddle.
So Mrs. Thomas was not invited in the huddle.
Wait, what?
You say Mrs. Thomas, I think you're wife.
She wasn't there, right?
I still want to know how many women were.
How do you just, like, are these women on call?
Are they already, they were already side pieces?
And they're like, hey, sidepiece one, side piece two, side piece.
piece three, head to the Airbnb.
Well, and by the way, who's booking Airbnb's in a global pandemic?
We have friends of ours that are.
Okay.
And doing what, like...
Well, this front, a matter of frank, mutual friend of yours and mine,
oh, really?
Moved, and she doesn't want to get a full-time apartment yet, so she is Airbnb
for a couple of months.
So maybe that's with the situation.
Michelle Margot?
No, she's moved to Nashville with her boyfriend.
Good for her.
Yeah, and I don't think they're Airbnb.
So what was I going with this?
We were just talking about why they're booking.
Oh, so who are they?
I don't believe they're prostitutes.
My guess is they have some sort of relationship with the Thomas brothers.
They're in beautiful Austin, Texas, Matt.
There wouldn't be prostitutes.
Are they even prostitutes?
And Earl Thomas wouldn't have to scrounge up prostitutes in Austin.
Well, my guess is Earl Tom.
Yeah, he's going to have a pretty good run in most American cities.
Certainly Austin.
Certainly Austin and probably the Seattle, Portland area.
Baltimore is probably doing pretty well.
Baltimore's doing fine, too.
New two territory.
He's planting his full.
flag in various cities across the country.
We're talking about this
huddle. Yeah.
Are they playing
seven on seven?
Are there 11 people in the huddle?
I think it's a 4V2 situation, like Joe said.
Maybe more.
Could be five.
Look, it could be a 2V1.
Again, you're talking about
one king-sized bed.
As a California king or a regular
or a standard king.
California, it's an Airbnb, regular king.
Standard king.
You don't put a California king in an Airbnb.
Yeah, there's no reason for that.
Like the first time I ever thought of, and this is really going on, Rolling Stone back
in the 70s, had a cover of Fleetwood Mac.
And all four of the members of Fleetwood Mac were naked in a bed?
We're naked in a bed.
And I thought, what kind of, this is young Matt Thomas at seven or eight years old going,
how do they find a bed that big to put four naked human beings in?
it.
And yet they did.
Actually, there was probably five members of the band, right?
Were there five in the bed?
Looks like there's four.
I just hooked it up.
I think members of Fleetwood Mac all hooked up with each other.
They just rotated.
Really?
That's what they did in the 7th.
Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.
Stevie Nicks.
Yeah.
Mick Fleetwood.
Yeah.
Christine McVee, yeah.
I mean.
So I'm just saying I...
Germaine Jackson.
No, Jermaine Jackson.
Not a part of Fleetwood back at the time.
I didn't say that.
So I just...
I mean
Go ahead
Spit it out
Wait what
I don't blame Mrs. Thomas
I don't
Yeah she's mad
She should be mad
You know what I love
I love that she has friends
Close enough to her
That she called up
She called up two of her friends
Said let's go
And said I
Earl is with these women
He's with these hose
At the Airbnb
I'm grabbing his gun
You get your knife
And we're gonna go shake
These people down
That's not how it went
One of our friends said, I'm bringing my knife.
Like, that's friendship right there.
Like, I better happen to me.
If I called you two guys and said, come with me to an Airbnb.
And you're going with a gun?
Yeah, I'm super busy, man.
Oh, you know what?
I just got this thing.
Yeah, you guys, you'd let my call go straight to voicemail.
I would pick it up.
Once you said you're going over there with a firearm, we might get a shaky connection.
Do you think Mrs. Thomas told her friends that she was bringing a gun with him?
I bet you.
Or maybe?
Yeah, they had to know.
You think she sprung it on her?
Hey, Geryl.
Guess what?
Look what I brought to the party.
Here's a knife for you.
My friend named Boretta.
What?
No, like she brought a knife for a friend.
Oh, she's assigning them weapons like they're the ninja turtles and she's master splinter.
One friend's got a pair of numchucks, ironically.
Yeah, exactly.
No one's got a knife.
No one's got a gun.
It's like they're going into a battle of some sort.
Yeah, it's like the, the anchorman thing.
Wow.
That escalated quickly.
So Earl says he got.
She got beat up pretty badly.
Yeah, she was hitting him and hit him in the nose.
Did she pistol whip him?
We don't know.
That's what I'd like to imagine.
She just hit the butt of the gun into his nose.
And what we don't know is that how did he get the gun away from her?
Well, apparently, I think he wrestled it from her is what.
With one in the chamber, that's dangerous.
Could you imagine wrestling with someone with a gun in their hand?
No.
Oh, that's a hell no.
So Earl Thomas.
Yeah, how does he go to Media Day this year?
maybe there's no media day
maybe he gets lucky
I mean he did say they're seeing the kids again
they have three children between the two of them
which is obviously that's the worst part of all this
is that these kids are going to be embarrassed
because their father was involved in a big huddle
see it doesn't feel better to say huddle than it does anything else
no I feel like it's more family friendly content
I like the rhyming word one that's okay
I do too but it's for the internet only show
it's true all right second hour the Matt Thomas show
starts in a manner of moments
I think we've got as good a confirmation about Tom Brady's first game as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer who he's going to play.
The schedule leaks are coming out, Ross.
Are you a leaker?
Do you like the leak?
Do you like one of the leaks?
A few times a day.
I like surprises.
I don't want these things coming out, but they're going to anyway.
We'll tell you about where Tom Brady could be opening up his season, and I'm still waiting for the definitive leak on the Texans' first game.
It is the Matt Thomas show, 713-212.
5.790 is how you reach our show.
713-212-5-7-90.
Is the Matt Thomas show.
Here we go in the second hour
the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
NFL teams telling
their squads, they have
an opportunity to have everything
ready to go by May 15th. You'll be able to have
players back inside your facilities.
Wonderful.
It looks like non-employed,
non-team members, meaning like
coaches,
equipment managers,
anybody that's in and around the organization.
Chaplains.
Chaplains,
vice president of football operations,
will be required to wear a face mask.
The workers,
as well as visitors,
team facilities will have their temperature taken daily
while answering health-related questions.
Phase one,
which is May 15th,
may bring in no more than half of their non-playing employees,
up to 75 any day.
Fever is required,
or fewer is required by local regulations.
regulations. So that's going on there. Major League Baseball looks like they could get something going
with spring training, perhaps sometime in June with a July 1st or July 2nd start date. Schedule length
could be anywhere between 80 and 100 games. Players could have rosters as few as 30 and as many
as 50 available on standby. And the NBA, three teams are going to open up tomorrow, 27 or not.
The rockets are going to move back 10 days. They're supposed to open up on the 8th. Now it looks like
they're going to open up on the 18th.
Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner, has said they are not prepared to open up,
so the Maverks will not be.
So now, if you're Adam Silver, I'd like to put you in the commissioner's shoes here.
Okay.
If you're Adam Silver and you have only a handful of teams practicing, three start tomorrow,
a few more and more will come along.
What do you do with teams that can't clear them?
Do you fly them to somewhere else?
Do you fly them to different cities?
I don't know that you fly them.
I guess you give them the option.
Tell them if they want to go about and finding their best way.
I mean, does Adam Silver, is it my responsibility as commissioner to find you a place where you can practice?
Or do I say, hey, these things are open.
I understand.
We can't really do it at your own facility.
I encourage you to find a college or a high school or any kind of facility or whatever and try to get your people there.
Unfortunately, obviously, that becomes kind of difficult and they're at a disadvantage, but it's the reality of what's going on right now.
It's either today or tomorrow there is a call with every player available to jump on a conference call with the league's.
Player Association Director.
Yeah, I was wondering, are you going to have 450 NBA players on this conference call, or how is that working?
Let's get real for a second.
Are you going to interrupt your Airbnb huddles for this?
Let me ask you this.
Of the 450.
Yes.
How many are you jumping on the conference call?
Is James Harden jumping on this conference call?
Well, it's not just James.
It's anybody.
Is LeBron James jumping on the conference call?
Yeah, he's going to try to lead the conference call and make it about himself.
Well, hell.
There's that LeBron hatred spewing out of your...
I love LeBron.
I also know he likes to make things about himself.
So I'm that $450.
Would you say, would there be 100 players on it?
I would say over, hopefully?
You would hope that they would be at least half.
They made an announcement, hey, everybody be at this call at 12...
Because it's not like they do this a lot.
It's not like they're doing anything.
It's like, well, first of all, they're not busy.
They don't ask for these on a weekly basis.
You've got three days in advance of notice.
Hey, we're going to make this call at noon or whatever time.
So hopefully you're all up.
I mean, it's not like they can go out to bars or strip clubs unless there's, I don't know, speakies he's running or something like that.
They don't have anywhere to go.
They don't have anywhere to be.
Answer this call.
I don't know if it's going to be a conference call number or what.
Well, my guess you should get them all on the call.
You would think if you have a vested interest in seeing your game come back, you should be on that conference call.
Because, you know, what I would do is if I would, in time if you would take attendance per se, but if someone was to bitch and moan about what was going on in the NBA, then Silver could say, well,
You weren't on the call yesterday.
So you get no vote?
Or why are you being so outspoken when you didn't take the time to be on this conference call for a few minutes?
Maybe they'll put it on each of the teams to kind of corral their guys and have them all on the call at the same time.
I think absolutely.
It's like, hey, I don't know who on the Rockets organization would be, have to say, hey, it's your responsibility to get everybody, but somebody.
I feel like it would just be, make sense just to have 30 guys on the call, just have the player reps.
But.
Or maybe like only the player reps can ask questions.
But see, they want as many people to hear it because there does need to be, this guy said this happened during the call.
They want as many people to hear.
This is the Players Association.
This is not the League Mending.
This is the Players Association having this call to say, what do y'all want to do?
My guess is these are the types of questions.
Do you want to finish out a season?
Where do you want to do it?
How long do you need to get ready for the start of the season?
How many games do you want to play?
Because let's be honest, guys, if you're one of the 16 teams that's not going to be.
to make the play a 14 teams that not make the playoffs.
Why do you want to go through all this to play four or five games?
And that's, and I'm asking this question in all sincerity.
I don't, the more this thing gets pushed back and back and back,
I think we're not going to see those non-playoff teams.
We're going to see the 16 teams that make the playoffs.
They're all going to play, you would hope, three or four scrimmages
against maybe Eastern, maybe a team that you,
You won't face until maybe the finals.
So if the Rockets were to play, somebody they could play, I don't know,
who's a, who's a, who's a, who's a, who's to be the 60 in the Eastern Conference?
I'm trying to think it's been so long so we look the same.
The seven series of the nets.
So let's say they called the Nets and said, let's play three or four games
so we can get ourselves into game shape, into playing somebody else not named our own team.
And it's starting to playoffs.
But what motivating?
Sixers is a Sixers.
Wow.
Okay.
So what motivation would it be to go get.
Phoenix to rev up to play a month
of game unless it's in their
financial best interest. That's exactly
what I was going to say. Money. Paychecks.
We'll give you this amount of money.
You'll be able to make your paychecks only
if you play these games. You say, hey, we're going to
play five games. And I think
that would maybe even be somewhat of an incentive for
these players. Hey, you're only going to have to deal with
these restrictions. You're only going to have to be with these bubble.
You're only going to have to get constantly tested
and temperature checked and all that type of stuff
for a couple weeks. And then the team, and you're going to make this
amount of money. And the team would then put the pressure
on the players because the Phoenix Suns, when they put five games on Fox Sports, Arizona,
get five sons broadcast.
And that means the local TV dollars go into the team's coffers, and then they can,
you know, they can help pay those checks.
A little bit, yeah.
Okay.
So maybe that makes sense.
But I think, yeah, I feel like basketball is just kind of slow to this a little bit.
Maybe they're just more gun-shy than the other sports are.
they don't you know football doesn't has the has the most attractive calendar to worry about
they're the ones that are like you know what we'll put the schedule out today and we'll see
what happens but we can we've got some flexibility and you only have to do 16 games yeah
major league baseball probably feels the next amount of pressure yeah because it's at least 80
yeah if not 100 you know because i think most people want it to get to at least 100 so get
to give it in a good round good number of games basketball's fighting the calendar
because not only is it fighting its calendar to finish out this year
it's also then putting on a calendar to determine
when they're going to play next year.
Yeah.
And so it'll be interesting to see you.
So the call is apparently an open forum for players
to address any concerns or ask questions.
So I mean, is that like if any Joe Schmoe
at the end of the bench of any player,
like he can ask a question to Adam Silver.
Is that how it's going to go?
Is Silver on the call?
I think.
I thought it was just a Players' Association.
It's with Silver.
Okay.
And the executive director of the NBA PA, Michelle Roberts.
Well, you know who's asking all those questions.
by the way. It'll be Chris Paul.
Yeah.
Chris Paul is a serious question asker.
Okay.
Like, you know, like the operator on a conference call.
Or like you're in class and you're trying, like the teacher's trying to dismiss
class, but there's somebody who's asking like 15 questions.
If you would like to ask a question on this NBA player's call, press star four.
That's star four.
Our first question comes from C. Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
He asks his question.
Ask his question.
Our next question comes from C. Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Press star four unless you're Chris Paul, because we want to give somebody else a chance to answer a question.
Our next nine questions, Commissioner, so we're coming from C. Paul.
I mean, that's what it would be.
Who's the rocket most likely to ask a bunch of questions?
Like, hold everything up.
Russ.
Russ?
Yeah.
What about Austin Rivers?
Yep.
Duke kid, smart, too many questions.
Let me tell you.
Let's turn to the roster.
He didn't really go to Duke.
He went for a season.
Yeah, you know.
He played like, didn't he?
He's an alum.
We were already determined that.
Yes, that's a fact.
Didn't he get hurt?
No.
You're thinking of Kyrie, maybe?
Oh, I'm thinking of Kyrie.
He had the game winning shot to beat North Carolina in a game.
That's right.
I saw that on ESPN Classic.
One of the 90 games I've watched in the last month.
What are they're recycling all the Astros' embarrassing losses again.
Who is?
The Kerry Wood game was on again, apparently.
They did the 2005 NLCS game five with the Poohole's home run.
Gross.
It's just like,
It's more astro-bashing happening with the MOB network recently.
Annoying.
Yeah, stop it.
Well, yesterday was the anniversary of the Carrie Wood game.
So, but it's a-
I don't want to hear it.
Don't-Han.
But it's the second time they've shown it.
Listen to hear you, Wendy City Hunk.
We don't hear your Chicago smack on this show.
Yeah.
Carrie Wood ripping up his arm with his crazy slurves.
You mean Dusty Baker?
Well, we weren't going to pull him out of that game.
That's one of the all-time great performances.
So good.
Yeah, is his arm still, is it still attached?
to his body?
Was there an amputation?
God almighty.
That game sucked.
It did.
113 on the Matt Thomas show.
All right.
Some schedule leaks are coming out.
Do we buy in the Texans opening up?
Do you think NBC would really go with Houston and Kansas in the week one opener?
We have some other confirmed of a sexy game featuring Tom Brady's debut.
We'll tell you about that next.
113.212.5.7.
That's how you want to get in if you'd like to do so.
We'd love to have you.
713, 212.
790.
This is Cougars head coach Dana Holgerson.
Matt's kind of like Shasta without putting on a costume.
He's a big old...
The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 790.
There is a sports radio host in Kansas City.
Remember, us in sports radio, we don't break stories.
Nick, right?
It's actually he's in Chicago now.
Oh, is he?
Danny Parkins.
Yeah, okay, you saw it then.
Yeah.
So he went from Kansas City to Chicago?
Yeah, he's Chicago.
Congratulations.
So he's doing pretty well for himself.
But he obviously messed up somebody that was a mole that was trying to tell him what's going on with Kansas City.
Yeah, he was in Kansas City for a long time.
I think he replaced Nick.
Okay, so do you trust this guy one to ten, ten being the highest?
Remember, sports radio people don't break stories very often.
I know, so that's why I'm not like a six, honestly.
This guy name is what, Bob Fesco?
Oh, Bob's in Kansas City, yeah.
Oh, who's the guy that broke the story?
Danny Parkins.
Danny Parkins.
Danny Parkins.
Sounds like a girl that...
What kind of name is Danny Parkins?
Newspaper delivery boy, small town America.
Wouldn't you have to stop going by Danny?
Oh, little Danny Parkins dropped off the newspaper.
He said he saw the dog down the street.
Hey, your daughter's going on on on her first date.
Who's she going on with Danny Parkins?
He's the neighborhood boy in small town America.
Yeah.
Little Danny Parkins.
He calls your wife, Mrs. Thomas.
He's extraordinarily polite.
He brought my daughter Carly a nice rose.
for their first date when they're going to movies.
Have you sent your applications in?
You know, Danny Parkins got into Dartmouth.
He's like a little two, he's like a little goody two shoes.
Yeah, do grown-ass man call themselves Danny?
Danny McBride?
Danny Ferry.
Maybe it's more common than we think.
It's not Danny Glover.
It's not Danny Marino.
It's not Danny Patrick.
Danny Green.
Danny Age, Danny DeVito.
Oh, okay.
Then it's okay.
No, it's still thinking it's not.
There's more dainties than we realize.
The polite newspaper thrower, Danny Parkins is okay.
Like, Joey, I can, don't, not good.
Can't be Joey?
Joey Gallo?
Two people call me Joey, and they're the only one of a lot.
Who's that?
Like your wife?
Family members.
And your mom.
No, like cousins.
Were you ever a Joey in your life?
When I was really young.
I just like to call you Joseph.
No one really calls me Joseph.
Everyone calls me J.G.
Okay.
Nobody calls you Matthew except my mom and one of my mom.
And my wife's mad at me.
I call you Matthew sometimes.
You're not,
yeah,
and that's when you're mad at me too.
I call you,
Mateo.
Okay,
so let's talk about
Dan Parkins.
Okay.
Or as the kids in the neighborhood
called him,
Little,
Little Danny Parkins.
He says the Texans are opening up
against Kansas City
on the Thursday night game.
Okay.
If you're,
okay,
go,
do me a favor.
Go get the Kansas City home schedule.
Okay.
So if you're NBC,
now granted,
we'll watch
the worst NBA football NFL
MLB game. How we're watching the
Korean baseball organization. So we as
America are watching anything. Let's go Dusan
Bears, baby. Do you
put up just
a rather ordinary week one game
because it's just a week?
It's the first week of the season. Whoa,
this is not ordinary, Matt. It's Deshawn
Watson. It's the reigning AFC
South Champions. It's a grudge match from the
divisional playoff round playoff game.
51-7.
Matt, the options aren't good.
51, 31.
I think the Texans are their
home games. Go ahead.
Broncos?
Could be.
Is that a more sexy matchup than the Texans?
No.
Okay, Chargers?
No.
Raiders.
Yes.
First game is the Las Vegas Raiders?
The Raiders are like 5 and 10 or whatever.
But it's John Groot?
I think they got to be first Monday night game.
I get your point, but they should open up in Vegas on Monday night football.
Okay.
Patriots with Jared Stidham.
It is still, they're one of the most popular teams in America.
Say what you will.
By way, there'll be a curiosity factor about what they're like without Tom Brady for the first time.
So yeah, I would say more interesting.
Sure.
Jets?
No.
Falcons.
No.
Panthers.
No.
Texans.
So you're saying there's a chance.
Patriots arguable.
Falcons, I would say arguable.
then the Texans are right there
as far as most sexy home opponents for the Chiefs.
Must be a sucky year to be a season ticket holder.
Let me ask you this.
If the Texans open up the year at Kansas City
in that Thursday and opener game,
do you think Bill O'Brien's like,
we are honored and privileged to,
that NBC gave us the chance of, you know,
showing the country.
NBC recognizes that we're a big brand
and obviously we're going to try to do good things
on the national stage.
You know, we played the Chiefs twice last year.
We got them once, and they got us once.
So looking forward.
to it. Patrick Mahomes, great quarterback,
Andy Reid, great coach, talented team, Super Bowl
champions, and we're looking for
a good early test in Arrowhead Stadium
this Sunday. Thursday.
You know what? I'm now buying into
it. I'm buying into
the fact that it's a playoff team.
It is an exciting quarterback.
And I'm going to still say a little bit of
I'm going to throw a little shade on,
why would you want to
burn an awesome,
how do I put this?
Why would you want to burn an awesome, awesome,
awesome game when America will watch anything the first weekend.
Yeah, I mean, well, and they just don't have any sexy home matchups anyways.
We just went through the list.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah, Stidem led Patriots or Derek Carr and the Raiders.
I would think if you're not going to take New England, it's because you think they're
really going to fall off the map this year.
Nah, I don't know.
They'll have their fair share of national.
They will have their fair share national games no matter what.
See, the reason why I would take New England over Houston ease of it.
it's because you're going to give me the Brady
less Patriots for the first time in 20 years.
Yeah, that's good.
I want to know what that looks like.
Yeah, I get it.
And if Stidham goes out there and his first start
beats Kansas City on national television,
that is a rude awakening to the rest of the league.
In my mind, New England is three times sexier than Texans in week one.
Now, Texans Karen, thinks that the Texans should play on national television every week.
All right.
So that's the one thing that remains up and great.
But again, little Danny Perkins or whatever is named, Parkinson's.
He would, how many Twitter followers he have?
He's got two markets following him, right?
So why?
50K.
That's a decent amount.
Twice as many as men.
Yeah, you're right.
He's not going to put that out there just to do that, is he?
Wouldn't think so.
Yeah, I wouldn't think so either.
And everything he's leaked is bears or cheese.
Chiefs related.
Dukes.
Okay, so let's go into...
Duceon Bears?
No, we haven't...
Not those bears.
We haven't done our KBO updated yet.
All right, so I'm going to go with
and it's opening week of Texans versus Chiefs.
All right.
I'm with it.
Okay.
Let's go.
O and one.
Week?
Well, we went into the lines, right?
There were like 11-point dogs in that game.
But tomorrow, we will give you the definitive
definitive record of the team.
Tomorrow, the schedule is dropping tonight.
We will have...
probably spreads for undoubtedly
week one, probably beyond.
What is also being put out there is that
week one of Tom Brady's career
as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
will be against the Saints.
I like that.
325 local time
for that second half of that Fox double header.
If Fox is smart, they'll put Tom Brady on every week.
Even if he's a train race, they'll put him as the main game every week.
I mean, they're going to be combined. How old are they going to be combined? The quarterbacks in that game? It's got to set some kind of records. Fox is already probably making their little packages. Aren't they both over 40? Yeah, 43 and 41 or something like that? Is there another quarterback matchup? Matchup that's ever been that heavy age-wise?
Can't be. Unless George Blanda, when he was playing into a, when he was nearly 50.
Yeah, Blanda had to play somebody in his mid-30s.
Yeah.
a thousand percent we will find out on on the on the graphics of that game so blanda
ended his career what is a member of the raiders am i right about that i think so
so george blanda this is pre who would have been old back in like
1960 when it was his last year i'm trying to think if we can figure out the
jrude blando was finished with the raiders in 75
did he start those games or was he back well he was probably a backup at that point
Because Stable was there at the time, right?
Yeah, the last time he started, actually, he didn't start a game.
Last time he started a game was 68.
So he was a backup for seven years?
41.
Well, he was a punter as well.
Okay, that's true.
Or a kicker.
So when's the last time he started a game at quarterback?
You said 68?
Yeah, 68, which point he was only, he was 41, so.
Ooh, then, yeah, then I think we're going to have the oldest starting quarterback duo ever.
Vinnie Testaest of Erdi played until he was in his 40s.
But that would also require somebody else being in his.
40s.
It's got to be record setting.
Maybe a Vinnie Tessaverty versus Joe Montana game, maybe.
Something like that.
Yeah.
All right, 127, and it's a Matt Thomas show.
Speaking of age, there is one NBA coach that says, don't worry about me.
Guess who that coach is?
Are you thinking about it?
We'll tell you who it is and what ESPN believes he's thinking about in terms of, yeah,
I'll be ready to coach when the NBA resumes.
Let me tell you about Big City Wings.
They are resuming amazing food at all either of the other.

Listen to the home of the Astros in your home.
Just tell your smart speaker, play Sports Talk 790 on IHeart Radio.
132 is the time.
Good afternoon to Houston, Texas.
My name is Matt.
That is Joe.
That is Ross right there.
We call ourselves the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
713-1-2-1-2-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-79.
If you want to reach out through Twitter, we'd love to have you visit with us there.
at SportsMT, at SportsRV, at Joe George Radio.
And again, the phones are always available to you.
Some days are more intriguing than others.
Tomorrow we'll get full complete breakdown of the Texan schedule.
Matter of fact, we're going to go, and Joe, you don't know this,
but we're going to go with overnight coverage of the Texan schedule.
We'll start at 7 o'clock, and Joe will handle 7 to midnight taking your calls on the schedule.
7 to midnight?
Yeah.
Pass.
Who's done that?
He was doing midnight to six.
12 to 3 is Doug Pike, ironically enough.
Gordy goes 3 to 5.
He'll get you the best hunt.
For all the road games, he will find you the best hunting spots.
Gordy goes 3 to 5, and then we play the best of Joe George 5 to 6.
Okay, wow.
Wonderful.
We're getting some run, guys.
Appreciate it.
Could you imagine five hours of Joe George's schedule talk?
Of course.
Why not?
No.
I would just read the box.
I'd just be like, they're starting quarterback.
You have to go through every team at the...
Week one.
Thursday, September
whatever,
at Kansas City,
725.
Your thoughts,
713,
212, 7.
You don't have to simulate
that you should start
doing live play-by-play of that game.
I would just play Madden.
I would just bring my PS4 up here.
Just start playing Madden.
I like that.
This is how it's gonna go.
All right.
So tonight,
it's all-night coverage
with Joe George,
seven to midnight,
and then the best of five to six.
I crack myself up sometimes.
Yes, you do.
I know.
I'm not nearly as fun as I think I am.
None of a sign.
I think we all think we're funnier than we are.
Two different NBA general manager sports RV told ESPN recently they have had major concerns about older coaches and staffers being present at games, provided we get them, due to the factors that place older coaches and staffers at a higher risk.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that adults over the age of 65 are higher risk of severe or fatal complications from the coronavirus.
coronavirus. I don't think you can argue that. I think the number of deaths in America over the age of 65 are way higher than any other demographic.
Well, there's one person that's like, I'll be ready. Mike Dan Tony. According to the ESPN, he's not directly quoted in this, by the way, says that rocket sources believe that Mike Dentone would have zero reservations about being on the sideline at the NBA season was to resume, despite the increasing risk of severe illness.
he is 69 years old. He turns 69 on Friday tomorrow. We got to honor him tomorrow with his
birthday. Congratulations to him. Greg Popovich is 71 years of age. Are they going to have to wear
masks? Let me read on. Sources say Dan Tony, who's been sheltering in place at his Houston home
and plans to take precautions such as wearing a mask, has faith that silver would
not allow the league to resume if the safety
or players under, with players, coaches, and staffers would be
compromised, saying that if he gives the all-clear,
it should matter if you're 19 or 79,
you will be able to safely go into a building and play.
My biggest concern is he going to be able to social distance from the
referees when he gets in their faces?
No, he can yell.
Let me tell you this.
Wearing a mask as a coach might be a big benefit
because you can yell as a lot as you want to
be muffled a little bit?
If they give you a technical foul, you can say,
I didn't say what you thought I said.
Send that back.
Yeah.
What's up?
Mm-hmm.
I like that.
Can it get muffled?
Yeah.
I mean, yeah, I mean, let's hope that he's going to be saying.
I would imagine, first of all, he's healthy, right?
To our knowledge, he doesn't have, he's not what the kids would call immunocompromised
as far as pre-existing conditions or anything like that that we know.
I don't know the man's health.
You know, we're not doing his physicals or anything like that.
And we're not going to ask him.
No, we're not.
Yeah, what's your blood pressure day, coach?
What's your blood sugar today?
Yeah, not going to do that.
Right.
As far as we know, he hasn't had a bunch of issues or anything like that.
Right, right.
So I think with the proper, with the proper measures in place that he should be fine,
and you know he's going to want to coach.
You know, he's the gay.
He'll sign, he'll sign it.
If you put a whatever waiver in front of him or whatever, he'll sign it immediately
because the man just lives to coach basketball.
There just isn't a way that you can say, sorry, Charlie, we're going to knock you out of your job just because of your age.
It's not fair.
If he had had the virus before or once, then I would say, okay.
If he had been sick multiple times during his coaching career, I think he missed what a few games.
Was it a year ago or two years ago for some sort of flu-like symptom?
But again, that's right.
That's going to happen to everybody, whether you're 69 or 29.
Flu does move around.
It does.
It happens.
Is the conversation different for Coach Dantone if he has a contract?
I wouldn't think so.
No, I would say there's no difference in conversation.
Because they're saying the same thing about the concern about Greg Popovich than they are about Mike Dantone.
Yeah.
So they were trying to exclude him?
Like if they said, coaches over the age of 65 who don't have contracts for next season, you can't come coach.
Because I mean, I'll be honest with you.
if Mike Dan Tony was to leave the Rockets,
Mike Dan Tony is going to get hired again by another NBA team.
Immediately.
Immediately.
May not be as good as a situation.
Maybe a little bit, I mean, maybe a lot worse.
Might be a little bit better.
Brooklyn, New York, Chicago.
Ooh.
Don't set on Washington either.
Brooklyn?
Brooklyn with Katie and Kyrie.
Do you give Mike Antonio, Katie, and Kyrie?
Me, he's had to go through a, he's had to have divas on his team the last
handful of years.
No, I mean, I'm talking about how good the offense would be.
Yeah. Selfishly, you know how I feel.
What, do you want them with the Bulls?
Yes.
Please.
Yeah, y'all just prod along there in old Chicago land.
They've blown it up.
It's been a rough run since there was the brief Derek Rose era.
I'm excited about bulls basketball.
And his knees and legs got obliterated.
I'm excited for the first time in a decade, it feels like.
Well, selfishly, I don't want him to leave.
I don't either.
Because now only do I like him.
as a coach, I like him as a person.
And frankly, in our business, there are very few coaches you can appreciate them both on and off
their courts or all their field of plays.
And I do with him.
So I'm completely biased towards hoping that Mike Dan Tony stays.
Although, again, I'm mentally preparing for a party in the ways because that's what typically
happens when you don't have a long-term contract.
And, you know, maybe, you know, maybe Timone wants to make his own move, bring his own people
in.
Daryl or out of the case would be.
Like I said, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, you know, I,
I like him so much as a human being.
I like him as a coach.
I will be disappointed if he leaves, but I will know he will find another place.
And other rockets will be, you know, looking.
And again, there's all these names that are getting thrown out there.
I don't choose to get into those speculation wars.
Well, Jeff Van Gunney is a name that's been flooded.
He's the one that gets brought up.
I don't know why.
The guy hadn't coached in 13 years.
But that happens before, too.
There are guys that going to broadcast and they come back.
For 13 years?
I don't know if it's been that long, but Hugh B.
Brown came back.
Gruden was out for a long time.
Gordon was out.
Doug Collins came back.
How's that going on?
How's that go?
Well, they don't stay very long.
Yes, what I'm saying?
When is this worked out?
The last coach that went to the broadcast booth.
That was...
Well, Urban Meyer went, but...
I don't even count that.
I'm going to say Dick Vermil.
This was very successful.
Went to two Super Bowl.
He went to Super Bowl with the Eagles, and then he went one one.
But, I mean...
Yeah, he was in television a long time.
Who else is like that?
left the broadcast booth
and gone back and been successful
for, um,
oh,
Doc Rivers.
Yeah,
Doc Rivers.
I mean with the Clippers.
Or no,
I guess when did you go to the booth?
Was he with the Celtics before the,
was he in the booth before the Celtics?
Yeah, he was with ABC like in both three oh four.
That's right, because you know, he was kind of not that greater coach the magic.
Then he got three,
all, three Hall of Fame players and things went better.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So Doc Rivers would be an example.
But he wasn't gone for,
he wouldn't away from the game for 13 years.
How long was Herm Edwards away for?
There's no way.
A 20 years.
Yeah.
And then he also came out.
It's like, I'm going to Arizona State.
And he's done okay there, right?
I think he's like 500.
Okay, well, I mean, that's what kind of Arizona said expects.
Doc Rivers didn't miss a year of coaching.
He's coached every year since 1919.
So he must have, when he got fired from Orlando.
We got fired from Orlando in the 0304 season.
He was coaching the next season.
He was just got fired 11 games of the season.
Okay, so he did the TV.
He didn't miss a full season.
So, I mean, that's different than missing 13 seasons.
Yeah.
To me, the longest gap in time between a coach broadcasting going back to the court would have to, would have to be Dick Vermil.
Because Vermil was on television on CBS and ABC for a long, long, long time.
And Joe Gibbs was away from the game for a while and then came back.
But he made the playoffs like once, and then that was basically.
Well, you know, the thing about Van Gundy is he's been coaching that under 20 Olympic team, right?
So he's always tipped his feet in the water a little bit.
Yeah, he probably knows most of these young guys in the league from coaching that team.
I just would be skeptical.
Yeah, because the verse Van Gundy, I think, was really grumpy, wasn't he?
Yes.
And I don't want, and the thing about Mike D'Antonio that I love so much about him beyond the fact that I love his offense and whatnot, is that he rarely ever is grumpy.
He lets things, you know, roll off his back fairly easily.
I feel like that maybe, and maybe Jeff would be different.
Because he is so good on television.
He's matured, obviously.
And maybe he's like, you know, the way that I used to coach doesn't work in today's
in beginning in 2020.
Joe Gibbs went away in 92 and came back in 2004.
Wow.
Pretty good distance.
143 is our time.
We'll start taking some calls.
We'll come back from our segment here.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-750.
Non-Florida stories at 220.
If you missed our visit with James Clickit, that's coming up at 230 here on 790.
Yo, this is Bunbee.
and my wife is the biggest fan of the whitest man in America.
Matt Thomas, Matt Troy.
Reckless, ratchet, and don't give a fuck.
Thank you, Bon.
Or as we call him here on the show, Bumby.
Some people call him that.
Not us.
148. It is a Matt Thomas show.
Sports Talk, 790.
We take this program until 3 o'clock this afternoon.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Let's go to Paul and Myerland on 7-90.
Hi, Paul.
Hey, guys.
How's how to go on this afternoon?
Good, Paul. What's up?
Oh, not a whole...
I just want to say I had really enjoyed watching your little Facebook live stuff
which you've been putting on.
Thank you. We've had a good time with that.
Yeah, we've had a good time about that, for sure.
I've watched two of those, and really I'm looking forward to saying some more,
and keep up the good work, and I'm going to hang up and listen on the beautiful I-heart radio.
There you go. The all-I-heart radio, thank you, Paul, for the nice words.
Here's what I'm going to try to do.
I would like to play Family Feud.
with the 790 family
where we would split all of us up
into two teams, of course, I would play the role.
Richard Dawson.
Well, we're not going to kiss, are we?
No, we're going to be on a Zoom meeting, so no, no kissing.
But the problem is, is that we would need the graphics up and everything of the, you know, the results.
And we just don't have that kind of capability.
We're not on a television production scene.
Well, how do you know?
Because I've already asked Joe.
I've already asked a digital person and he's not responding on.
Yeah, but he likes roadblocks.
Oh.
I like solutions.
Do you really?
Yeah.
We could do it on a PowerPoint presentation.
You hit space bar.
Well, no, you'd have to click the right.
You'd have to click the box at the box to open up.
If you know the results ahead of time.
Yes.
You would need somebody who knew the results.
Couldn't you just create backgrounds and put them behind you?
That's what I'm saying.
Or you could pipe in like a PowerPoint presentation or something like that.
It could be done, I think.
Well, I guess I would invite the PowerPoint into the Zoom meeting, correct?
Is that how it would work?
No, like it would be your background.
Like what Ross does with Tiger King.
Or you can, I believe there's an option.
You could show my screen or whatever because people are doing that on accident when they're looking at things they shouldn't be.
So I think I would put on there like, show my screen.
And then you would show my screen and you could see.
Why don't I work on this this weekend?
You just wouldn't be able to like if we, it's a lot of work.
When we make a guess, you wouldn't be able to probably choose that one on the board, I feel like.
You'd have to wait till the end.
we'd have to have somebody with a soundboard
you could have to get a soundboard on your computer
it could be done
it sounds like a lot of work okay then I don't want to do it
I would love me let me tell you something
I'll do it for 100 bucks an hour
why that number of all the numbers
because that's what I make here
oh okay
just kidding I stand corrected
or I could just
write on a piece of paper and show you the answer
you know what I'm saying I mean we could just dumb it down
you could do that if you want
you can get a like a white do you have a whiteboarder
I got a whiteboard.
Yeah, a whiteboard would work.
So the team would be the final.
It would be Salisbury, Sager.
I was going to think the old versus the young.
Okay, you could do the whiteboard, and somebody could give the answer.
You could stand by the whiteboard.
And then if you have the answers, I don't know where we're going to get these survey answers, though, from.
Oh, I've got the 40th edition of Family Feud.
Okay.
And so you would just put, you'd say, that's your answer, and then you would just put an X on the board if it's a strike.
And then if it is the answer, you write it in.
Okay.
Yeah, just make it nice and simple.
Now, the bigger issue would be, do I take the questions that are in my home version of Family Feud?
Or do I make sports specific questions and have the audience be my survey people?
I think that would be more fun if we found a way to do a survey.
Survey everybody up here?
No.
Or audience people?
Remember they say top 100 people?
You would need 100 people to email you.
Yeah, I would email the, I would have, hey, do you want to screw with it?
I don't know.
You can probably pull old ones from the internet as well.
I bet you can find like all time.
But what would be a good family feud question?
What excites you about the most about the, let's say, what would be?
Oh, who is your least favorite coach of all time in Houston sports history?
Yeah, that'd be good because obviously the number one choice would be Bill O'Brien,
but number two would be who?
You know what?
Jerry Glanville.
I was going to say Glanville would be two.
Does Kubiak make the survey?
Cubiak is probably on there.
Maybe capers?
There are people who don't like McTanthony.
Kevin McHale, no.
Well, these would be the guesses.
You'd have to get 100 people, though.
No, you wouldn't.
I could get 15 to double it.
It'd be a lot cooler if you did.
All right, here's what I'll do.
I will send out tonight.
I've got nothing to do tonight.
Anything going on?
Schedule release.
I'll watch it during the schedule release.
party.
Yeah, I'll wake up and read the schedule.
I don't think I'm turning in early tonight.
It's going to come on during our show.
Don't think giving out some of it at 630?
Everything's coming out at 630.
The Texans are going to release it on Houston Texans.com at 630.
When do we replay James Clay?
615.
So are you going to do a show today then?
What do you mean?
You could tape the show.
Well, no, because the schedule's going to come out a lot.
Yeah.
I can't predict that many different schedules.
Might be funnier if we do it that way.
Yeah.
All right.
So here's what I'll do.
because again I'm worried I'm worried about the Monday night meetings by the way
what we're talking about is that we do these meetings once a week on Mondays where we
rotate people on 7 I need to join our star our money I'd rather do password or something
like that what's the one with the 60 is that the one with the 64 million dollar
pyramid and you guess the words or whatever well password is if there's a word like
if let's say the word was crash yeah and I would say cars do this no you know you would
of say cars and you'd say crash.
Okay, yeah, yeah.
One word.
Now, Pyramid is where you have, you can describe it as much as you want to as long as you
don't say the name of the word.
Okay.
Yeah, let's do pyramid.
I like that one.
That's easier.
Yeah, but family few with sports-related stuff.
We could do different games every week.
We can do it every week, yeah.
Or every once a month maybe.
This is your opportunity to be a game show.
Yeah, Matt.
You could do audition tape.
So like my auditioning?
Yeah.
You know what?
I hadn't thought of it that way.
You said you have a green screen, get your nice background.
Let's go all in.
Let's do it.
Let me tell you something.
You guys add the production value of the show.
When I get my first game show that I get to host, I'll give you guys a cut of my first salary.
It'll be a very small cut.
Yeah, I was going to say, what kind of cut?
What's like we're talking?
50, like we, I mean, I get you a gift card or something.
A car.
Oh, thanks.
You don't.
50 bucks to best pro shop or something.
Yeah.
Oh, by the way, Jimmy Williams will be in the top five of people we hated.
Ooh.
You weren't in the business at the time.
No, I wasn't.
Jimmy Williams was Hager.
I know that he was hated just from reading the Chronicle.
Jimmy Williams was one of the biggest A-holes in Houston coaching slash managerial history.
Jimmy with one M, by the way.
I hated him.
Who spells there?
How are you Jimmy with one M?
We still have some audio in our sports archive of him.
And I'm going to go look out of here real quick.
I don't think we can air it because I think some of it involved swear words and whatnot.
Oh, we do. Yeah, there was some Jimmy Williams in the archives.
I heard it recently.
I know. I'm waiting for this.
My computer's not working fast.
But he was so not obnoxious.
What would you call it?
When you talk down to somebody.
Pompous, arrogant?
Yeah, exactly what that was.
He was the worst.
Holier than now?
Yeah.
Let me see if I can go to Sports Archive here.
We have some doozies.
Jimmy.
Let me see if I can find some Jimmy Williams with a Y.
Oh, imperious. That's a good one.
Yeah, very good.
Dominering.
So 2 o'clock hour is going to feature our visit with James Click if you missed that.
Plus, we need to recap the Earl Thomas situation.
If those are not playing.
Well, we've got to keep people abreast of the situations.
All right.
See, I have a bunch here that says, not for air.
Why Jimmy is a...
Yeah, not for air, Matt.
Damn.
He'd that.
He'd that one.
I wish we could play this.
Well, we can't.
We have a lot of not-for-air stuff here.
We should play this on a Monday night meeting.
We'll get some big-time numbers off of that.
I mean, you can just play me on the new guy.
I don't know what one ever told me what not-for-air means.
Stop.
All right.
Stop of the hour.
If you've not heard about Earl Thomas, can we add some production value in Earl Thomas?
Maybe put some sound bites in there?
What sound bites?
I don't know the ones you found on your blog.
They're, oh, no.
Just saying.
Let's start the final.
It's your blog.
Let's start the final hour
The Matt Thomas show in a moment.
713, 212.7.90.
Is the Matt Thomas show.
All right, we got non-Florida stories coming up in 20 minutes.
The James Click interview at the bottom of the hour.
We were talking about, and by way, my buddy, Wade,
a great idea.
I'll go to SurveyMonkey and come up with Family Feud questions.
And then we'll have the 790 Family Feud.
We'll have the morning.
We'll go morning all the way of the afternoon.
So we'll go Sean Sager, Connor,
Andy and Gordy on one team.
You, Ross, Joe, Clanton, Wexler,
and we'll need a fifth person for the...
Do you go at Doug Pike?
Who would be the fifth per?
Oh, I think we need a fifth person.
I don't know. I definitely want Wix.
I want Wix as well.
If we're not doing...
Wix as well, like...
And we're not doing the young versus the old.
No, no, no, we're going to do one versus the afternoon.
Yeah, we need We need Wex on the squad.
Salisbury is sneaky, probably good at this, though.
Okay.
It's an opinion game.
There's no right or wrong answers, I guess.
You need to get, you need, yeah, you need certain level of the lines.
By the way, if you want to get into a rabbit hole tonight on YouTube, go to Family Few Dumb answers.
Okay.
One from the old version of.
I watch those, yeah.
Steve Harvey.
I love the way Steve Harvey reacts.
Richard Dawson, I watched one the other day.
The question was, name the month in which a woman starts showing her pregnancy.
Why?
It was a question.
Well, that's a dumb question.
So you would say, you know, fifth month, six month, whatever.
Oh, so she said like January or something?
She said September.
Yeah, see, that's why I got confused.
I was like, what?
January, I guess?
How many different answers can you have on that?
Literally only nine.
That's right.
And you would think probably between three.
Three and four.
Three and six would be the top answers.
Well, it depends on when you tell everybody.
Depends on how she's showing.
Yeah.
So, yeah, you two rabbit hole of dumbass family feud answers,
it will make you better laugh.
That's for sure.
Okay.
All right.
So we were talking about Jimmy Smith being Jimmy Smith.
Jimmy Smith.
Jimmy Williams being one of the most unpopular leaders of a Houston sports team.
I don't even remember what these are, but we have three soundbite.
it says why Jimmy is a P-Rick.
Right? I can say that, right?
Why Jimmy is a P-Rick. Here is example at number one.
So I'll just have to accept that and move on.
That's just the way it is. That's the way life goes sometimes.
Tough one you have to sit out the game.
Listen, you keep repeating yourself here.
No, I just say it's tough to be out for you, personally.
That was obviously Jimmy Williams' guy kicked out of a game, and Mark Berman asked about it.
he said you keep repeating yourself
okay that one's not too bad
here is example number two
managers coaches players so like I said
just accept it and move on
why
I guess you're just going to have to stay curious
that was I think it's Matt Mucelotskin that question
these are really old this is
2006
and probably before that it's when we archived him
and then here is
the last two we have of why Jimmy Williams was a P-Rick.
He had an outstanding game tonight for us, and we needed it.
Surprised they would try to steal in that situation?
You'd have to go ask them.
Are you surprised them?
You'd have to go ask them.
I've got 25 players here.
We just take care of our own team.
I can't worry about two teams.
Did he kind of block the base, so it's hard to tell.
I don't know.
I don't know if the runner got there.
I don't you see a replay.
See, I can't see a replay.
You guys see replays, and you're asking me something that you should know.
because I don't.
You better go talk to him then if you don't have the answer.
I love the beginning with McTaggart.
And former 790 Robert Hensley on the questions.
Was that right?
With a little awkward media laugh in the mix in the middle there.
Huh.
Were you surprised?
We'd have to ask them.
What?
No, are you surprised?
I'm asking you.
So the Astros hosted the All-Star game.
Was it 0-4, 0-5?
0-4.
Jimmy Williams gets booed.
I knew the next day that McLean was going to fire him.
And if it was the next day or pretty close after that,
but Phil Garner was ready and locked and loaded to go
because he was everything that Jimmy Williams wasn't.
He was a player's, he was personable, he was pleasant.
He, the clubhouse appreciated him.
And things turned out pretty well.
They went to the National Championship Series one year and then the World Series
of next.
Man, Jimmy Williams.
Williams. And there have been, I'll say this, in all honesty, in my career here as a sportscaster,
there have been very few. I mean, I didn't think Gary Kubiak was a great coach, especially down
the stretch, but he was always a very fair, decent human being. I'm trying to think of some other,
Don Cheney. It was the next, it was the day after the after the All-Star game. Yeah, it was
bad. It was 2004. Bad. I didn't, I didn't get to, I didn't cover the Rockets with Bill Fitch's coach.
I covered him with Don Cheney.
I covered them with Rudy as the coach.
I never did Adelman, although I heard very mixed things about Edelman.
Did a little bit obviously with Kevin McHale before he got let go.
Texans coaches Kubiak and O'Brien.
Capers.
Capers was terrific.
Capers was just the salt to the earth guy.
Jet black die job.
As with Kubiak, I guess.
Yeah, you know, it's what it is.
Guys do not want to give out the gray.
And then in terms of colleges,
uh,
Kemp Houghton was hot and cold.
Dana Demo was nice, but way over his head.
Uh,
didn't get to really know someone all that well.
Tony Levine hated my,
uh,
my headphones.
Yeah.
But all those guys were pretty decent guys.
We've,
I think we've been all,
you know,
all,
all,
all things considered pretty lucky in our city,
in terms of likable people.
Jerry Glanville would have to be probably number,
I would think if,
if you really were to take
the Houston coach's
sports scene of the history of the sport,
of that probably Glanville is even more is despise more than Bill O'Brien.
I would say, yeah, but I think there's a lot of people aren't going to have context.
That's exactly right.
Which you, it's the here and the now that doesn't more than anything else.
So, because Bill O'Brien hasn't had a great run of things and on top of it, he's getting more and more power.
So, yeah, I think I will put the survey monkey into play here.
We're, okay.
I don't really know what Survey Monkey is, having to used it.
That's what you can go on the web and you can create your own surveys.
And they'll do all the heavy lifting for you.
I might have to make some of those.
What would you make your questions about?
Matt Thomas Show.
No, I don't think so.
No, no, no, no, no.
I can't handle critics as him very well.
Don't do that.
All right.
Let's get to Earl Thomas for a second.
Can you recap?
Are you going to recap the story?
Sure, please do.
Well, Earl Thomas, apparently, in Austin on April 13th.
So this happened weeks ago and still have.
and come out.
Got into an argument with his wife over his drinking.
And then at that point, asked his brother, Seth Thomas, to pick him up.
He got scooped up.
They went apparently to an Airbnb.
Nina Thomas looking for him, signed into his Snapchat account, found video of another
woman with Earl Thomas, then turned on the Snapchat location services.
found Earl that way,
grabbed a couple of her friends,
grabbed Earl's Beretta 9mm,
which she took the magazine out,
but apparently there was still a round in the chamber.
And then she and two of her friends,
one of them wielding a knife,
apparently busted down the door,
and at that point confronted Earl Thomas
and his brother who were in bed with multiple women.
Confronted.
Let's put this in there.
They walk in to the B&B.
Did they try to,
Do they knock the door down or do they enter on their own?
Maybe she checked the email and got the Airbnb gate code.
Knock, knock, knock.
Could you imagine your spouse with their sibling in a bed with multiple people of the other sex?
Invision that for one second if you choose.
And you have a gun in your hand.
How is this going to end well for anybody?
It's not.
She's going to go to jail or something.
I don't know.
You can't, can you drop those types of charges?
really drop charges on your wife, right?
Yeah, I think so.
But maybe it's not up to him.
Maybe it's up to the courts.
We'd have to get our legal expert on this.
Where's Charles Adams?
I think you just can't testify.
Yeah.
Or you don't have to testify.
No, but in a domestic situation, the wife or husband can choose not to press charges, right?
So let's say you go in front of the judge and say, Judge, you were looking to throw me in jail because you think that I did something wrong by me walking in.
on my husband and his brother buck naked with multiple women.
Yeah, you're going to eat some women on that jury.
And you'll be fine.
Didn't Carrie Underwood say something about this?
Yeah, didn't she write a song about it?
Before he cheats or after he cheats.
Yeah, didn't he?
When he cheats.
Didn't she take a tire iron or somebody's windshield or something?
Yeah. She put a bat in his car's headlights or whatever.
You're trying to recite
Underwood lyrics to a song?
I don't know them.
It's not going well.
Why not?
Because you haven't done it yet.
I don't know them.
Well, they don't do it.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah, she did this.
Carved your name in as leather seats.
See, Louisville slugger to both headlights.
There's a baseball reference.
Yeah, that'll teach him.
Crazy skink.
And again, the two things about the story.
is we're trying to figure out the ratio in the huddle.
Yes.
And number two, if you were to call your friend or friends and say, hey, we're going to go catch my husband or my wife cheating on me, why would you think bringing a knife to this said confrontation would be the right thing to do?
Because that's what Mrs. Thomas did, her friends did.
He said, hey, yeah, not only will I go with you, I'll bring a knife with me to this.
Yeah.
those are your ride or dies Matt
you know I do believe in ride or die you know that that's true
we don't get enough ride or die in this world
I just think that's taking it to a little extreme
yeah all right um
it's time for us to give you something
that we'll give you every Thursday on the show
and that's not Earl Thomas updates but
stories about what's happening in our world
strange things that happen outside the state of Florida
now if you've listened to the last couple weeks
Joe George has embarrassed himself with his selection of stories.
Fact.
Do you feel like you got a better chance to sweep him?
No.
I don't want to do it.
Why don't you, Ross, seriously, send him a story.
It's fine.
I got to come backups for him.
Because I just think you're really wasting your breath and you're embarrassing yourself by these horrific stories you put to the table.
That's not very nice.
I mean, it's the truth.
It is.
He's not wrong.
I'm not denying any of this.
Tell the man that is wasting his breath.
You know what?
Prove me wrong.
I can't. Give me the best story of the weekend.
I have nothing.
Not floor stories.
Wait a way to sell the second.
Yeah, I was going to say, this we call a professional radio tease right here.
You're going to go last.
I just figured that already.
After I tell you about what's happening with Cromberg flags and flagpoles.
So many people in my neighborhood are improving their outside, working on the yards,
working on the interior, the exterior.
And they're trying to make their homes obviously a place of pride.
And one of the things you can do is display your favorite college team, your favorite pro team, or your affinity towards a set of Texas or the United States with a flag or a banner from Cromberg's flags and flagpoles.
These banners and flags are made of heavyweight, durable, 100% nylon or polyester.
They're finished with a heavy duty stitching for tremendous durability, and they'll help you get your home to stand out even more.
This is a company that has been there for decades.
They work in the Bella area, and they have different flagpoles on display at their offices.
You can get U.S. flags, sports team flags, patriotic apparel, flagpole hardware, home kits, brackets, all that.
They'll do the installing for you, especially if you're looking to add some flags to your place of business.
Do yourself a favor and call Ron at Cronberg's flags and flagpoles at 713-661-92.
713-661-922. To get a flag or banner that really will stand out for your place, a business
over your home, think of Cronberg's Flags and Flagpoles. Online, K-R-O-N-B-E-R-G-S-Flags, Flags and Flagpolls.com. That's Cronbergs,
flags and flagpoles.com.
This is Craig Vigio.
Vigio. Back to Matt Thomas on Sports Talk, 790.
Oh, we're having some fun.
You're home with a strove.
I, 217 on the Matt Thomas show.
This is time for our non-Florida stories.
You find the official non-Florida music.
Yes, we did.
Despite the system's best attempts to thwart us.
Here's how it goes.
We'll read a story.
And then we'll all decide between the three of us,
maybe get some help from the audience, too,
about which of our stories is the best.
So it'll really be between Ross and myself.
Joe might have a great story.
The story that I chose
I found and Ross also sent to me.
Oh, wow. There you go.
I don't know. That makes me feel more confident, less confident.
Know that Ross didn't choose it.
It was one of my leftovers, but that's okay.
This isn't a great story.
It's unfortunately involving a husband and wife arguing again.
Dateline Battle Creek, Michigan.
According to police records, a husband and wife in the Battle Creek area called 911.
After the woman said she threw away the man's cheesecake, worried that it could be infected with a COVID virus.
I could go for some cheesecake.
The man told her it was a gift from a friend and was angry that she threw it away.
As the woman then reached for her purse, the man said he was worried that she was looking for her gun.
They wrestled over the bag, ending with the man hitting the woman in the head.
Both parties called.
911.
The man reportedly going into his bedroom to get an unloaded gun.
Oh, boy.
He said the woman hit him in the head when he came out of the room.
The man then walked outside where a Calhoun County Sheriff Deputy arrested him on domestic violence charges and being a felon in possession of a weapon.
A warrant for domestic violence will be sought for his wife.
So not only did they not get to eat the cheesecake, they both called 911 at the same time, and they both got arrested.
COVID's a bitch.
Cheesecake's worth it.
now let me ask you about the cheesecake
yeah do you fight over the cheesecake
if it's like the serrali box stuff that you get at the grocery store
those are still solid
they are sneaky good
or jam pack with preservatives but that's okay
or do you let him be
because the cheesecake is first made from saying a cheesecake factory
you're speaking words of wisdom
or a Marie calendars if you will
or a house of pies
I think the origin of the cheesecake
and whether or not
she should allot him to eat it is a huge component in this.
Okay.
So just put it this way.
Be careful when you eat cheesecake at home
because your wife might get mad at you
and then you might think she's trying to kill you with a gun.
I want Oreo cheesecake right now.
Favorite flavor of cheesecake?
I'm going to go with just a regular old New York style
with strawberry topping on.
I'd go regular New York.
New York style with no topping.
After that, red velvet.
Cheesecake.
Regular style, no topping.
If I add topping, I go blueberry.
But if you don't have a topping on it, then it becomes very thick and there's no...
Well, if you have a nice fluffy one that's got enough moisture, you don't need any topping.
Yeah, if it's a new cheesecake, it's good by itself.
Thank you.
But see, I think it's too rich.
What depends on where you go?
It's my wheelhouse.
Like, we didn't do birthday cakes for my birthdays.
Growing up, we did cheesecake.
Wow.
Number one on my list.
I like that.
Cheesecake is my favorite dessert.
I do like an Oreo cheesecake.
Oreo cheesecake is money.
How about a key lime cheesecake?
You guys in for that?
If you will.
I've had that, yeah.
I think the graham cracker crust makes it all
no matter of what kind of cheesecake.
Any kind of cheesecake.
It's got to have a graham cracker crust.
Yeah, my story's very average.
I just thought bringing up cheesecake was good.
Okay, so who's next?
Me or Joe?
You're next.
Joe, your last.
All right.
Well, let me tell you about people, the people of Louisiana,
and the police of Louisiana,
they're urging residents to be on the lookout
for a suspect that has been terrorizing bank customers
in Walker, Louisiana.
They have warned that the suspect
is ignoring social distancing rules
and the orders of the governor
by harassing customers at the ATM
and the drive-thru.
It is chasing people and trying to get into the vehicles.
The suspect is an aggressive chicken.
What?
It's described as a reddish-tan
18-3.
inches tall between six and eight pound chicken
according to the Walker to
police department
the officers responded to the bank
on Walker in Walker South Road
after receiving call at 4 p.m. Friday
regarding the suspect quote
apparently anticipated the imminent arrival of loss
of enforcement and fled on foot from the scene
the chicken
is still at large
I'm just trying to envision this chicken
so you're just trying to
get a couple of bucks out of the ATM
and some aggressive chicken is
squawking at you, packing you, and trying to get into your car.
How many people had this happen to them?
I don't know, several people apparently in Walker, Louisiana.
That's a made-up story.
CNN.com.
That's fake news.
You're not letting, you're not running a chicken.
You're not letting a chicken.
They're not letting him into their car.
He's trying to get into car.
For what?
I don't know.
Maybe he wants to burglarize them.
And these people are all at the ATM machine when this is happening?
Maybe he heard some of the hands racked up in an Airbnb and he wants to need to ride.
All right.
So we have a chicken trying to get into cars.
We have a husband-wife fighting over cheesecake.
I feel confident, guys.
You're number one?
Come on now.
Don't let us down.
All right.
Go to California.
The Modesto California Highway Patrol arrested Gabriel Moreno.
He decided he would put his blinkers on in front of a truck carrying barrels of
wine. Okay. The trucker pulled over to the side of the road and Mr.
Marino got out of his car with no shirt and no shoes on and he then decided to
climb on the side of the truck. The truck driver freaked out, drove on the road,
and Mr. Morano decided to climb underneath the truck while it's going on the
freeway, open a valve and start drinking and chugging wine coming out from the tanker.
You win. And I see I feel good because I found this one, but Ross also said it to me.
Good affirmation.
Good for you.
You did it.
You found a better story than ours.
A man gets into a truck.
Open.
How, like, how?
It's in, the way the story describes it, it's like a fast and the furious scene where he's holding on to the truck, like the underneath of the truck.
But how big is the valve?
That's it.
They don't say.
That's a great question, though.
It holds, well, they lost about a thousand gallons of wine, they said.
Oh, so it just was pouring out on top of them.
So basically it pours all over.
He's probably drenched in wine, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he's just like opening up his mouth and saying, I'll take it.
He's spilled the wine, yeah.
That seems oddly intriguing.
I'm not a wine drinker, but...
Hmm.
You're not?
No.
If I was to start, by the way, I've been asking about this because, look, we're all drinking more than we ever had before.
That's a fact, actually, last couple weeks.
It is absolutely a fact.
If I've had glasses, I've never had a full glass of wine in my life.
What?
Yeah.
Man, I wonder how you live your life sometimes.
But you're a fancy mat.
How do you go through all the stages of your life, including marriage?
How does your wife feel about wine?
Loves it.
You've never had a glass of wine.
I've had taste.
How about at your wedding?
Champagne.
Okay.
I mean, that's sparkling white wine.
But nobody really goes, oh, okay, champagne and wine.
It's different, yeah.
I drank a whole bottle this weekend.
What do you buy your wine?
It depends.
Liquor store?
Specks or H-EB?
Yeah.
H-EB's got a lot of labels.
Or like a total wine and more.
Like if I put out five bottles of wine
and said which one is the most expensive,
could you figure it out?
No.
No idea.
Actually, experts can't even do that.
That's a fact with blind taste testing.
So basically wine is a scam.
Wine culture is kind of a scam in the way that
kind of like you find, for example,
your wife's $500 bags that she tries to make you buy.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, the $20 bag works just fine, right?
Sure.
But it's kind of like that in a way.
No, there is obviously differences in quality,
but for the most part, a lot of it is a scam.
So here's what I'll do this weekend.
I'll watch the Big Labowski, knock that out the list.
Yes.
And I'll have a glass of wine.
You need to tell me what I'm going to drink.
One of the greatest joys in life, man,
is a sip of red wine with a wonderfully seared steak.
Okay.
You need red meat and red wine together.
It's amazing.
How about this?
We're going to go to Lake Charles soon.
Okay.
As soon as like Charles opens up again, we'll go have some steak.
over at one of the Landry's properties.
And have a bottle of wine with it.
Yeah, that's what happened last time we went there.
I had a steak and wine and you had a...
Did you have a cocktail or a beer?
I had a cocktail, yeah.
Okay.
So what am I going with?
What's if I'm going to drink that initial glass of wine, what am I going with?
We should probably start you off with a cabernet or pinot noir or something.
My favorite kind of wine is Keanti.
I like a Keonti.
Can I go, should I go box wine or should we go with a bottle?
No, no.
We'll get you something like, you know, 12 bucks a bottle or something.
Let me make.
you a steak and some wine. Wait, that's weird.
Date night? Bring your wife.
I don't need you. I'm not going out on a date with you. Bring your wife.
I saw it. It's like an old time.
I'm not joining your huddle.
Let's get an Airbnb, Matt.
What's our ratio, by the law? You don't know.
Well, how much money you got?
All right. And those are our non-floor stories. We'll go down Bisonette.
Stop at the PI. We know people there. The guy runs the P.I. I know sent me an email one time.
All right.
If you missed our visit with James, click the Astros General Manager.
We're going to hear from him next.
Just kind of a state of the sport instead of his Astros.
We'll discuss that with him next to 228 on Sports Talk 790.
Hey, listen, Lou Holtz, and listen to Sports Talk 790 on your sports speaker.
Your smart sports speaker.
Your smart speaker.
Just ask.
Hey, Google, play Sports Talk 790 on Iheart Radio.
Earlier today, we visited with James Click.
If you missed a visit with the Astros General Manager, it comes now.
And to you as an opportunity for us to catch up with him,
we asked him opening up our visit today about what exactly the lines of communication are
between him, the team, and Major League Baseball in order to try to get a season up and started.
There are many, many avenues of communication because we have to coordinate all sorts of aspects of the possibility of starting back up.
you know, primarily it's a medical conversation about the logistics of getting the clubhouses
to the point where they're safe, maintaining social distance, and how do we do that in a competitive
environment? And then obviously you have to loop in the business side, you have to loop in the players
and boat association, you have to loop in the firm offices so that, you know, we can talk about
what this will look like. So there are many, many avenues of communication. Some of them are very
frequent. Some of them are less so because there's just less to talk about.
I think it's obvious from all of the different plans that have been put out there publicly
that we are trying to make sure that whenever we get the green light from the medical people,
from the government's municipalities, all that, that we have a plan that's ready to go so we can
get out there as quickly as possible. If I was to look at your daytime or your schedule, and I
think you've got some meetings today, and I appreciate you joining me before you get to those,
how much are you talking about the operation of the team on the field and how much of it right now is about just trying to get the sport back on its feet?
Yeah, we're unfortunately a little bit limited on what we can do with the team on the field because they're the transaction freeze.
And so it's interesting because I spend a ton of time on the phone every day, sometimes with other general managers.
And normally we'd be talking about trades or ways to improve our team or ways to,
to try to line up on things.
And because of the transaction freeze,
we're just unable to do that.
And everybody is focused on getting back out there,
getting out on the field,
figuring out how we do that as safely as possible.
So, like I said,
when we get the green light,
we're ready to go.
Ross, Villal here, James.
And what's the communication like with the players
and with Dusty?
Is their daily group communication individually?
How's that going for you?
It's kind of all of the above.
And Duffy and I talk regularly, sometimes about wine because he's out there in Sacramento
with a winery.
But, you know, a lot of times we're talking about when we get back out there, you know,
what does he want that to look like?
How does he want to operate the dugout?
Who is he going to be leaning on for various decisions and how are we going to run a game plan?
And then with the players, it's always the balance, right?
Because we want to check in with them as much as possible if they let them know that, you know,
things are moving or we're trying to find a way to get this stock going,
but you also don't want to bother them too much.
And, you know, where out you're welcome, so to speak, they're professional.
They know how to keep themselves in shape.
And unfortunately, you know, there's not a lot of news to give them a lot of times.
You can say, hey, this is something that has been considered,
but it is nothing more than an idea at this point.
It is just an idea.
It's just a plan in case we get going.
So we don't all need to start packing our bags for Arizona if that's what you're
wonder. And what is their general feeling, just the players, like, what's the consensus you think in
your mind about kind of balancing, wanting to play games, but also wanting to be with their
families and wanting things to be normal, even though we can't really do that, considering
the circumstances? Yeah, there's no right answer there. But, you know, the guys that I talk to,
especially the guys with young families, are, are hypersensitive to the potential to, you know,
go into a quarantine situation just to start playing games again. And, you know, and, you know,
None of us wants to put that burden on our families, especially those of us with young kids.
And so that is another consideration that goes into all of these different plans about how are we going to start this back up again,
is how that we make sure that not only the physical health of the players and the staff is protected,
but the emotional health of all of them dealing with, you know, the stress that this is putting on all of our families.
I mean, you know, if I have a problem, I just call my 8-year-old,
and he comes up and shows me how to it.
He showed me how to change the background,
so I'm on the Death Star or something like that.
And then Dusty, the same thing.
He's got to sound Darren out there, who's a junior account right now.
He always jokes that if he has a problem, he just called Darren,
name and Darren
fixing it.
So we're all
being on the younger
generation
office out of that.
That's for sure.
James Click Astros
General Manager with us.
Have you moved
your family here
now or has
did all this
pandemic kind of
slow that down as well?
Well,
I mean,
how much time yet?
Well,
I got to 3 o'clock
but I don't take
commercial breaks
and you've got some meetings
doing up in half an hour.
So it's up to you.
You say as long as you want.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I do.
I appreciate you got
Stephen in before the meeting.
But yeah,
we are trying to get out there.
as fast as we can, but as you can imagine, with, you know, getting hired at the beginning of February,
you know, we were planning a spring in Tampa, St. Pete, and so the school year was over, so not to disrupt the kids,
but, you know, the world had other plans for that. So, yeah, we're going to be out there very, very soon,
definitely before the draft, just kind of working on final details. All right, well, obviously,
this delay helps Justin Verlanner, in a sense, that he wouldn't be missing time on the
disabled us. He spoke with the media last week. How often can you get in contact with him,
perhaps his rehab plan, the doctors he's spoken to, where are you in terms of where he is?
He sounded encouraged. I'm assuming you're sounding encouraged as well.
Yeah, and I like to let a guy like JV kind of take care of himself. I mean, he is a true professional.
He knows his body. He's been through this injury before. So he has the experience of having to get back or have
to get back and he talks with our trainers daily and keeps us up to speed on exactly what's going
on but he doesn't need me breathing down his neck asking him you know how his black feels and how his
groin feels and everything else and you know how the ball is coming out and you know he's wearing
a mask and etc so we touch base when when you know it's called for by other issues or you know
if i want to just get to try to take his temperature on what he's thinking about how to start this back up
but in terms of the medical aspects of things you know he's a pro and we've got our
athletic training staff that are keeping out close eye on them.
What have you told, not necessarily you per se, but all the general managers about the minor
leaguers, because we're hearing various numbers about how big the rosters are going to be,
what kind of activity they will have if they go to Arizona or Florida, go to their home stadium,
whatever the end game is, what have you told the minor league system, you know, all a couple hundred of them,
about what their future is going to be for 2020?
Yeah, it's a really good question.
And I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of why this is much more complicated than it seems like on a surface level of trying to get baseball back out there in the field because you're not just dealing with a 26-man roster.
And especially in these times when there will be additional screening and safety protocols for entry into clubhouses, you know, I expect that we're going to rely on minor league players or guys who are in minor league rosters right now to help us out, just like we would in any professional baseball season.
It's just going to be more so these days.
And this is another one of those issues that everybody is scrambling and working as hard
as they can to try to figure it out.
But unfortunately, the best thing that we can say right now is that we don't know.
And as much as we don't like to say that and we don't like to tell people that there are things that are uncertain,
I think all of us are recognizing that a lot of the world in the launch of baseball is pretty uncertain right now.
And James, you're a guy who was hired a few months after any other general manager.
late in the game. So your head was kind of spinning in the fact that you have to learn the
Astros organization and you have to get to hit the ground running. And then this happens.
Can you just take us through? I mean, what was your mindset from February where it kind of
probably felt like a whirlwind to where this all has it slowed down for you or has it just
continued to be hectic? What does it been like for you?
Well, at least now I have company with 29 other GMs who are also trying to deal with their heads
spinning all over the place and trying to figure out a bunch of problems that we've never
really seen before. Yeah, I mean, when I first got there, I knew, I think I knew what I was getting
into and had an idea of kind of the things that we were going to have to deal with. But it was a very,
not a lonely situation, but no other team was going through that. Now at least, you know,
when you have conversations with other teams and other general managers, all of us can compare notes
and say, okay, you know, these are the crises that we're having to deal with. These are the things
that we're trying to solve. Does anybody have a good idea? And everybody,
just as, you know, we've never been for anything like this before.
So there's no playbook. We're just going to have to figure it out.
Last question, and I feel like we've asked you a lot of things that the answers are,
I don't know, but just somebody, you're a reassuring voice and we trust your valued opinion.
You know, obviously in the middle of spring training, you're trying to get this season started,
and then everything comes to a crashing halt.
I'm going to assume, James, that most of the players have not faced much live batting.
I'm going to assume that guys are not rigorously throwing like they would as they were getting ready for the start of the season.
in your mind, how long would it take for effectively your roster,
for that matter, any major league baseball roster, to get tuned up?
So that first set of games, especially if it's only an 80 or 100 game schedule,
we're seeing the players at their best and that no one can say,
well, it took us 20 or 25 games to kind of get acclimated to playing baseball again.
Yeah, well, you guys are doing a good job asking really good questions.
This is an active conversation among all areas of the organization.
It's an active conversation with the players.
You know, hitters and pitchers obviously are on very different schedules.
Veterans and rookies will be on different schedules.
You know, we have debates about how valuable is it to have, you know,
spring training games against other teams versus can we just do this inter-squad?
You know, how valuable is it to actually get through nine-inning games or back-to-back
or these kinds of things?
And there's so much that goes into getting ready for a major league-league based on a season.
And, you know, fortunately, Dusty's been through this before.
I mean, he's been through a couple of strikes.
He keeps talking about, you know, back in 81 where they had, you know, a couple weeks to get ready and they did.
So, you know, I have that benefit of working with somebody who's actually been through something sort of similar to that.
And we're going to lean very heavily on Dusty and obviously the medical staff and players themselves to try to figure that out.
But, guys, really don't have, like, you know, among all the things that we don't know, that's just another one.
And we'll try to figure it out.
That's more brief I think that we can work out, basically.
on Dusty's experience, our trainers, our players, we'll figure it out.
But, you know, that's the reason that we're having discussions about different
roster configurations and things like that to address the short runway that we may have.
All right, that again is James Click, the general manager of your Houston Astros.
Rossi, we're going to end the show with a bang.
We're not talking about Earl Thomas and his husband.
I was going to say, is Seth and Earl going to be there?
More schedule leaks.
Oh, boy.
on the Texans after I tell you about Big City wings.
So today is Thursday.
Double boneless wings.
That's right, double.
You buy one set of wings, boneless wings, sauce to toss the way that you want to.
I would recommend the cool ranch, new flavor, the dry rub that's excellent at any of the eight big city wing locations.
You buy one set, you get one free.
Plus, bud light aluminum cans, $3 all day.
Three measly dollars.
You're going to eat and drink on the cheap at any of the eight.
eight big city wing locations.
They still do the door dash.
They still do the takeout service.
But they're dying and in all eight of their locations.
Plus, if you're in the hankering for some crawfish, five pounds of crawfish for just $25.
So you got wings, you got crawfish, you got burgers, you got $3.00 buttline aluminums.
And you've got outstanding service.
And I'm telling you, it's a great place to go for cheap eats and a great time to spend some time with friends and family.
And yes, proper social distancing is in place.
Big on wings, big on specials, big on crawfish.
It's Big City Wings.
Online, big citywings.com.
Stop by one of those eight locations and please, please, please tell him that Matt Thomas
from Sports Talk 790 sent you to Big City Wings.
Left side to Westbrook on the baseline for the tie.
He makes it and he's fouled.
This is Russell Westbrook.
One thing's for sure.
I did not get my amazing style from Matt Thomas.
Oh, hammer job.
Hey, Ross, do you think that Russell misses me at all?
Russell, who?
Westbrook.
No.
Yeah, I think you're right.
I don't know that he's thought about you once.
Sorry.
Oh, there's no chance.
Good liner, though.
Yes, we appreciate Russ.
I can't wait for him to come back because it's been a great sport, good interview.
It's been fun having him here, right?
Emicable fella.
Way more enjoyable than I think most people, including Adam Clinton, thought it would be.
I just remember the day it happened.
We were at a kind of a Rockets Watch party at a local bar,
and the question was brought up among the group,
hey,
what do you think about Russ coming to the rockets?
I said,
I wouldn't be opposed to it.
I was heading up to the mountains in the Sequoia National Forest
going to lose cell service for over 48 hours.
Yeah.
So I was up in the woods contemplating the whole Russell Westbrook thing.
And one other friend of the show said,
we'd be okay with it.
And then,
not even 10 minutes later
and table adjacent to us said
oh my God
oh my God oh my God oh my God
and it was Russell Westbrook
to the Houston Rockets in return
Chris Paul and there was another key pieces to it
I'll say this
I know that every one of the deals for the Rockets
has not gone the way they wanted to
you're still chasing a championship
but for a drama
this team can give it to you
in the last 25 years Ross
Clyde
Scotty
Barclay,
Dwight Howard,
Chris Paul,
Russell Westbrook,
Carmelo Anthony.
Carmelo Anthony.
Tracy McGrady.
I mean,
this is an organization
that goes for the star power.
I think, yeah,
that's one of the reasons I love the Rockets.
Maybe obviously hadn't resulted in a championship
in the last 25 years,
but they're all,
you can never,
you can never deny.
when it's less and now tell them it,
that the owner is doing everything
that they can to win a championship.
All right, couple of team.
Kirby?
No, Kirby's got it.
They're close.
Divisional playoffs.
Okay.
I mean, they are the only team in the last decade
that's not as tasting an AFC championship game
in the division, but, you know, there's time.
The last six years, right,
since Bill O'Brien's been here.
Oh, yeah.
Way to narrow it down.
Well, it is what it is.
A couple things.
There will be the main for TV, a golf event,
going to take place involving Tiger, Phil, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning.
It will be on Sunday, May the 24th at 2 o'clock Houston time.
It will be broadcast on TNT, TBS, True TV, and HLN.
I'm going to assume you're going to get each of their viewpoints.
You're going to be able to watch every shot of those four guys on their own channel.
Yeah.
Why is May 24th the ring of the bells?
Anything else going on that day?
Memorial Day weekend?
Okay, maybe.
I think $10 million in charity money is up for grabs.
Oh, I think that was the weekend I was supposed to go to Boston.
Hmm.
The Astros were supposed to be in Boston that weekend, I think.
Do we have a Lake Charles opening date yet?
I don't think so, Matt.
I think it's especially bad in Louisiana, right?
I feel like I ask that to you twice a week in the hopes that you say, yes, Matt, we've got a date.
Sorry.
We don't.
All right.
And you also were teasing.
Leakage.
Leakage from Danny Parsons.
No.
Danny Parkins?
Danny Parkins, little Danny Parkins.
Little Danny Parkins from down the street.
I'm sure he's a wonderful guy.
Danny Parkins sounds like he's the neighbor down the street that delivered your paper as a kid, and now he's in working in IT.
Why can't you be more like Danny Parkins?
Yeah.
You know who was the homecoming king of our high school?
Danny Parkins?
I don't know if he's that cool.
I think he's just kind of nerdy, goody two shoes.
I don't know.
I think a Danny Parkins could win a homecoming contest.
It ends up being like an insurance salesman.
Now, Danny Parkins is not running a Fortune 500 company,
but he's also successful enough not to run.
He gets middle management.
He's not running a hardware store.
I don't know.
Anyways, what's the leak?
Little Lenny Parkins telling us that the Texans are going to play the Chiefs
and opening night of the season.
What was the new leak?
The new leak is that this comes from Wex's old comrade over a channel two,
Vanessa Richardson, that it's the Texans and the Lions to play on Thanksgiving.
Oh, really?
That would be that with the second time in the last eight years,
they play on Thanksgiving against the Lions?
Yeah, they had that game when, who was the running back?
Ben Tate's knee was down.
Yeah, was it Ben Tate's knee was down, and then he kept running.
I think he had a hundred yard.
They didn't review it.
A hundred yard game that day, did you not?
That was part of his 1,000-yard season, true?
Probably.
I got all these things mixed up.
This is 2012, and, well, yeah, is this 2012?
Yeah, because they play those departments.
I think I'm thinking of Justin 14th.
set.
Somebody from the Texans, I think all the running backs had a great day.
Aaron Foster had 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Matt Schaubb had, this was an old-fashioned shootout.
Maddie Stafford had 440 yards and two touchdowns.
Do me a favor.
Listen to Adam Clayton and of Wexer because they are the A team,
and they want you to call in and tell them who they're going to play in week five.
Just making a random guess.
Week five predictions.
Part of Clayton, part of Wexer.
They're known as the A team.
and they are up next.
I'm Matt. He's Ross for Joe.
We'll talk to you tomorrow at noon on 7.90.
