Starting point is 00:00:00 1002 in H-town. Good morning, everyone. And welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Tommy show with Ross, or pretty soon will be the Ross Real Real Real Real Show with this other scrub. Guys on television. That's how I call it in my mind anyways. By the dime, you got your trim bearded up. Yeah, I did.
Starting point is 00:00:19 You got a straight razor. Yeah, of course the suit was a little small, but that's a different issue for a different time. I'm just kidding. I just, no, I fit perfectly. Did it? Yeah. It's just snug? Uh-uh.
Starting point is 00:00:30 No, I was comfy. Yeah, you were on, for those who don't know, you were on Channel 2 last night on the Sports Sunday program. Yeah, it was a good time. Shout out to Randy McEvoy for having me out. Yeah. And again, the key to going on that show is to make sure you go during the non-football season. Because if you're in football season and you have to wait for the end of the NFL Sunday game, then the news, you're just wasting your time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:53 So you were in the sweet spot of the sports Sunday schedule. It was a good time. Happy to be out there. Yeah. And you guys went to the board and started looking like you're a meter out. I know. That was fun. Punching numbers and stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:05 I was like, what the hell's going on? Talking about Jalen Green. I'm in Thompson. Rocket stuff. It was good. Yeah, good. Good, good. So you did well for yourself.
Starting point is 00:01:13 I'm proud of you. Thank you, Matt. We are here today until 2 o'clock. Well, we have got, I mean, we had a few things to get to, but we really have some things to get to when it comes to. I would say, not earthshattering news, but it's getting closer. there is one of the three best players in the NBA wants to go play maybe somewhere else. So we'll get into that a little bit.
Starting point is 00:01:37 That is the show progresses. I know we are not a sizzling hot non-NBA town. It doesn't involve our rockets, but there is a... What? It's not Buckstock 790 over here? No, it's not. We've tried. The research says stop. But there could be a rocket's angle to it.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And obviously there's a lot of folks who run the NBA that are our attention. attaching the rockets to the news of the day, which we'll get to in just a couple minutes. We had the Astros with a Uber bizarre weekend, crushed on Friday. Yes. Got crushed on Saturday. And then that same back, though. Well, okay. The damage was done.
Starting point is 00:02:18 The damage was done. But it was nice to see him. See some fight from the lads. The lads? The lads. I'm sorry. That's a European soccer term. I was going to say, what are we doing this week in Euro soccer?
Starting point is 00:02:29 And then Sunday, a couple of hits for the Reds, that was it. They scored 10 in the first and then don't score any at all on Sunday. As they say, that's baseball. That's baseball. That's the crazy game of baseball. So we got that to get to. We have to tell the truth today at 1130. We're excited.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Believe it or not, I'm going to have to go with Derek Carr retiring out of nowhere. Huh. I thought there was some wrestles. Somebody tagged me in a tweet. Some wrestler died? Yeah, I don't care. I mean, I'm sure to his family it was. I think his family cares.
Starting point is 00:03:03 I'm going to send this tape to that. What was his name? I don't even know. Tonger Tof. The marauder. Point being is this, not, I mean, let's just be brutally honest. All deaths are not created equal. That's true, Matt.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Some are more impactful than others. Like, if I had my relatives that live in Dallas pass away, it's going to be hurtful to me. Okay. You're going to feel bad. But you're going to go on with your day? No, I'm going to feel for you, Matt. No, I'm going to feel for you, Matt. No, I'm going to give you hugs and provide you support.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Just check it on you. No, I want you. I want to let you know, Matt. I'm going to be available 24-7, whatever you need. If all deaths, let me just put it this way. If all deaths are created equal, you're never going to be happy the rest of your life. That's true. That's anything in this world, Matt.
Starting point is 00:03:50 We choose what to plug into. How many different things to plug into? It's like yesterday on Facebook. I have the best. best wife. I have the best mother. I don't think you do. Yeah, you're all wrong. My mom's the best. I mean, yesterday my timeline
Starting point is 00:04:05 was 500. This is the greatest mother of them all. This is the greatest wife of them all. I am the luckiest man on earth. You don't have evidence of that. You might think it, but
Starting point is 00:04:21 I got news for you. I've got the greatest mother. I've got the greatest wife. So the rest of you could suck it. I mean, if there was an unlike button on Facebook, I'd unlike it. Because you're wrong. You don't go on Facebook to tell half-truths. You might think it's the greatest woman of all time. You are so weird.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I know. You're upset that people are calling their wives and mothers the best of all time. That's fine. Tell them to their face. Don't run to Facebook because I ain't validating it. Sorry. I should go out of one, Matt. You are one of one.
Starting point is 00:04:54 I should just put on there with all the... Look at these idiots. Look at these idiots. saying their wives are the best? You probably would have called them worse if we're off air. With all due respect, I would have to disagree. And just live it at that. Yeah, you should do that, actually.
Starting point is 00:05:09 You know what? I'm going to post a picture of me and my mom. I'm going to say, all your moms are trash. My mom is number one. I'm going to the day after. I've looked at all your photos yesterday, and I've come to the consensus. I'm right.
Starting point is 00:05:22 My wife is the best. My mother is the best. Sorry, all y'all can fight for second. Boom. Okay. Anything goes Monday. I'm just saying. Like on Father's Day.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I hope this is one of your takes you don't believe for a... You don't know that. You don't know that. You don't know. We get to do it. Coming up at 1130. I can tell you Lauren Jehita or whatever her name is. She's one of my favorites.
Starting point is 00:05:49 And that's the tell... I'm telling the truth on that. We have MLB Network on here. And Matt admires Lauren every morning in her analysis. And Roeflow. Well, I'd rather have... I don't respect where I'll follow. The rest of them I do.
Starting point is 00:06:01 That's fine. Okay. All right. It is 10.08. Again, I'm right about the Facebook thing. No, you're not. Why can't people say their mothers are great on Facebook? Tell them their face.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Why don't they do both? Because I don't believe you. No one goes, no one's on Facebook, Ross. It goes, oh, Don says that his mom's the best. I guess she is. I lost. No, nobody said. It's not really for you.
Starting point is 00:06:27 It's more for them. So I should call my mom and say, I got to tell you something. My friend Don says his mom's the best. So mom, you're really going to be only about second or third. Yeah, that's social media.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Social media is about talking about your regular life. Yeah. Like, I don't say I have the greatest daughter of all time or the greatest sons. I don't do that. I brag about them, but I don't sit there and say,
Starting point is 00:06:46 they're the greatest of all time. This is... To me, they are, but not everybody else. I allow you to have your own opinion. I am flummocks that you are upset about this. I don't know. I'm flummets.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Every year at this time, it makes me laugh. I go, my mom is the, yeah, I mean, it's, you know what, I'm posting every social media I got. I'm going to find a picture of me and my mom. Are you really? Yeah. And you're going to say, hers is the best. I'm going to say, yep.
Starting point is 00:07:10 And now, I'm going to tag you in it. Here's the problem. If I say, I don't know if she's the best, no, she's really good though. People are going to think you're serious. People are going to think you're serious. You're like, what are you talking about? No, happy Mother's Day to all everybody out there. All the best moms.
Starting point is 00:07:26 All the best moms. We spend it with the volleyball. court. We wouldn't be here without them, literally. And then we went and got to take out pizza. That's how we, that's how we're mad at the time of his house. How would the volleyball weekend go? It was fine. It was fine. It wasn't great, but it was fine. I thought you got to, I thought you got to commit in your house. We do have a commit. We still time to hang them up.
Starting point is 00:07:42 No, I don't disagree with you. It's time to get on ice. I mean, can I have, we don't want any torn ACLs, pulled hammies? Can I have a little downtime? Can we like take a tournament off? That's what I'm saying? Can we do the, uh, what do they call in the NBA? Load management. Load management on my daughter. I mean, she's already at the scotly. Yes, what I'm saying. Is she going to be a senior?
Starting point is 00:08:00 She's a junior store right now. She's a junior store right now. She'll be a senior. I'm saying next year. Yeah, next year. Okay. Yeah. Take half the time off.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Stay healthy. Rest up those hamies. Yeah. I don't disagree with you at all. And I'll save you a little money. By the way, you'd have liked the event. You know why. You know what?
Starting point is 00:08:20 A special extra special thank you to all the volleyball moms out there. Especially the ones that are divorcee. be volleyball Mother's Day to all of you. Or we're taking your break, moms. Especially, yes. Especially the divorced ones drinking a lot of Sutter's home. Wine.
Starting point is 00:08:37 When you bring box wine to the hotel, you know they're ready to party. Anyway, all right. Where are we going from this? I don't know. It's anything goes Monday. It's totally my fault. I'm sorry. I'd take some of the blame.
Starting point is 00:08:54 We could have done some text and scheduled release. predictions, but we're not doing that. We'll say that for... Actually, we'll say that for Wednesday. I don't act like this when you're not here. What are you being? We're like the kids that they have to separate us in class because if they put us together in a project, we're going to get nothing done. You and Wax her doing the show, it's very serious. Yeah, we just talk
Starting point is 00:09:10 sports. Like Dan's here, we're talking sports. And you get here and then we just cut up like we're to the two bad kids in the back of the class. I mean, we're not breaking down the economy here. You know, we're not that serious. We're not getting to the international troubles that are our world. in World War III coming up.
Starting point is 00:09:29 All right. We didn't get to the Astros, obviously a lot of the conversation will be about that. A lot of the conversation about Janus Atentacumpo, a story that came down about two hours ago. And if you've not heard, he is open to playing somewhere else besides Milwaukee. Now, he has not flat out said,
Starting point is 00:09:46 I must be traded. He's just saying he is quote unquote, this is from Sham Shirani, BSPN, that he's open-minded to it. We do have the NBA draft lottery tonight. or Akeem Elisho and we represent the Houston Rockets. Let's go. Very excited about that.
Starting point is 00:09:59 We had an interesting weekend in the NBA. We had a really unfortunate situation involving Lance McCullors on the mound and perhaps more importantly off the mound. I don't think there's a whole lot to be said except that I've told you all, and I've said this before, and it's when I speak of this in generalities, I don't mean to do so. But Ross and I always seem to gather who. is the most destructive of Twitter out there. And we kind of do a pegging order. Yes, yes. It's been Astros Twitter in it for a long time.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And they have been on that top spot forever. If you've not heard, and I guess if you haven't, it's maybe even busy doing the mother's and stuff. But he got a lot of death threats, harassment, terrible things said about him and his family after Saturday's performance. And that's probably one, two, three people. The police are handling MLB is investigating it. I'm not going to paint with a broad brush and say that,
Starting point is 00:10:55 three people would necessarily describe a fan base, but they know who they are. They'll be caught. They'll be, I don't know if it can be, I guess you can be arrested for some sort of. Terroristic threats, I think is. Yeah. But that doesn't describe who the fan base is.
Starting point is 00:11:07 But by and large, again, Asteros, Twitter can do some really wacky things, like Fire Joe's a spot after five games, or say that Josh Hader's a bum, or say that Christian Walker's another first base, rejad. I mean, you're just the worst group, and it's going to take a while for somebody to unseat. you. And unfortunately, this gets attached to social media, but this can be life itself. I mean, you could have book authors that could happen this too. This could be a famous actor. I mean,
Starting point is 00:11:34 we've, social media just creates a very small anonymous segment of the population that gets an opportunity to think they can use their, their keyboard to say things that they would never say or do in front of the person if they're in front of their face. So, yeah, it's the anonymity. Exactly. All right. 713-212-5-7-9 if you want to get in. 713-212-5-790. We have to tell the truth at 1130. The news at noon, believe it or not today, are we going to go NBA Draft Lottery or do you want to go with Derek Carr retiring from the Saints?
Starting point is 00:12:04 Oh, you'll either want. I don't know. We got time. We got time. We got time. We do both. We do Derek Carr at the NBA lottery. I don't think that's the case.
Starting point is 00:12:10 1014 on Sports Talk 7-9. 1020 on Sports Talk 790. It is a Monday edition of the show, and I know it's kind of hard to get going in terms of waking up and getting to work. Today's drive wasn't terrible. I got here in less than an hour, so I was kind of pleased about that. I walked in here. I thought it was a holiday.
Starting point is 00:12:31 What's today? So you went to the sales pit? How many people were back there? 713, 212-790. I just pulled a Matt Thomas. 7-1-3-212. Just asking. 5-790 is the phone number.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Everybody's out on calls, working hard, baby, trying to sell the Matt Thomas show. With Ross? We heard this show. You're doing all right. I don't want to hear a word out of you. I didn't say anything.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Ramon, Do I have enough live endorsements on my show? Oh my gosh. Can I do five lives in one break and just play myself talking endlessly? You were in rare form of form in the first two segments of this show, Matt. That's fine. I don't because of love. If you give any, he must take it.
Starting point is 00:13:14 I take it all the time. That feels like a clip. That does not. Feels like a clip. I feel like we gave you a bunch of clip stuff late Friday. I think we're already set for the week. Yeah, I got like four. Oh, jeez.
Starting point is 00:13:26 You simmer down back there. Calm down. go he's working hard appreciate you jonathan you're still on a probationary basis seven one three how long you move this two months that's probably a pretty much pretty much close to put that resume builder out there hey let's go got it on the resume doing a hey put me down for recommendation you're doing a great job yeah oh i appreciate that you two you can go do a show and like uh love it together um call it uh raider talk i like that raider rash talk oh i knew you were going to say that i just knew it uh 713 212 5779
Starting point is 00:14:00 If you want to jump into the conversation, 713, 212, 5, 790. So, I was volleyballing with my daughter and doing that. I did not, did you work Saturday or were you on the on deck? Who did Saturday? Could you imagine, if you went, and let me ask you,
Starting point is 00:14:18 for those of you that went on a Saturday, look, the crowds have been fantastic. It was great baseball team. It was packed on Friday. I can't speak to the other days. I'm going tonight. I don't know if it's going to be packed for Kansas City on a Monday. Kansas City on a Monday, probably.
Starting point is 00:14:30 But could you imagine you're going to get your hot dogs or your burgers or your chicken strips? And look, you try to get there early, but maybe you've got volleyball or maybe you... Traffic? There's construction around the between the B and C lot right now. It's a mess. Yeah, it's a mess. And you got to your seat, I don't know, first pitch of 610, you got to your seat at say 615. I mean, stuff happened.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Nine and in game, you're there for two and a half hours. And by the time you settle down and you've gotten that, picked up that $15 beer and that $9 nachos and that $6 dog and you're about $60, $70 in the checkbook already. And your squad is down 10-0. I was thinking of the exact same thing because I almost went to the game. Somebody I knew offered me tickets and I was going to go. Well, my mom was offered me tickets.
Starting point is 00:15:26 She goes to a lot of games. 10, nothing. Your starter gave you one third of an inning. Of course, is Lance. And I know yesterday, Ronell Blanco saved the team's bacon by going deep as he did in the game. And thankfully, he did. That was, I mean, you talk about a necessary, man, much needed. Much needed performance from your Astro starter.
Starting point is 00:15:55 But this rotation, which is six deep because of the non-off days, I think a stretch of seven. a stretch of 17 consecutive games. You can't have very many of those. And it feels like to me, unfortunately, with Lance two times through the rotation, I mean, he's not the only one. It's, you got other guys, too.
Starting point is 00:16:14 I mean, you've had blue ball and other guys get in there. Who's the other one? What, you're just to last name? Gusto, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's not a common. It's not Smith. No, it's not. You're really going to have to be
Starting point is 00:16:29 very careful about the bullpen. And obviously, O'Penn got beat up pretty bad on Saturday. Thankfully, did not get beat up yesterday. So you get a huge break on that. But man, just sitting down at 10-0. What do you do? Do you go, well, we wasted our time?
Starting point is 00:16:45 Do you go with, hey, it's a nine-eating game. You got nine swings at it, 27 outs. We can make this up. And the Astros, to their credit, did make it a ballgame a little bit. Yeah, they had six in the third. So at least you're feeling like, okay, this isn't a complete right disaster. By the- down full runs is not fun but yeah 12 to 7 feels better than 10 to 0 after 1 3rd after 1 half of an
Starting point is 00:17:07 anything absolutely does so that was good at least they gave you it was like a sliver of hope it's like yeah they're still going to lose this one but at least there was a sliver of hope so I'm going to cheer about the the comp on that is being down 21 nothing five minutes into a football game yeah or being down in a basketball game 22 22 points because that's the thing 10 to nothing is it's over basically I didn't know they got down in the first inning. Oh my God. Yes, Jonathan. Where have you been, Jonathan?
Starting point is 00:17:34 Well, I knew they were losing that. I just didn't. I thought you guys were for the pit, but I didn't realize it was that bad. We don't do things for the bit. We speak of accuracies. It was 10-0 after one-half inning. We would make these things up. Yeah, this is the thing.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Yeah, 10-0, the win probability already in. Before the Astros have come to bat is 98.6. That feels like a 35-0-0. football game. Yeah. Oh yeah, I would think of all the heavy deficits to be down 10-0 would have to be the worst of all the major sports, right? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Because look, we've seen teams in NBA down
Starting point is 00:18:12 20 in the first half and they come back in a way. 30 points. 30 is rare. In football, 21-0 is hard. I mean, we've seen Buffalo obviously came back from 30. Oh, yeah. Come on, man. Come on, man. But you spend the money, the parking, the tickets.
Starting point is 00:18:29 It ain't cheap. You get the gear on and you sit down and you're down 10-0. Yeah, 32,000 attendance. That seems kind of low. It was like it was more on Friday. This is prior to the reports of the terrible threats on Twitter. Yes. There were people booing.
Starting point is 00:18:48 What's your take on booing a guy that gets 10-0? I wouldn't have. I didn't like it. I didn't like it because I like Lance. but I also will say it's not unexpected and I also say this, it's your right. It's your right. If you pay and it's 10-0 and you want to boo, like you said,
Starting point is 00:19:06 you've taken one bite of your chicken tender and it's 10-0-0. You can be upset. You can be upset. I don't want foul language. I don't want derogatory terms. Death threats is certainly over the line, obviously. Yeah, that goes really without saying. But
Starting point is 00:19:22 if you get shelled, you get shelled. The only reason why I would temper more towards side of it is because it is a guy that's making just his second start. He has been hurt much of his major league career. It takes a lot of work to get back
Starting point is 00:19:38 to where he was. And he's also been a guy that has had a truck record when he was healthy of helping this team do really, really amazing things. And no one in the building felt worse than him. So to me, to make that worse by booing him, I wouldn't have done it. I will also say it's your right.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Right. I'm not a typical booer except for Drummond Green, but I'm calling the game so it's hard for me to boo in the middle of calling a game. Yeah, it'd be funny. And another, Boo! Matt, what was that? Wexern Clanton are off mic.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Matt, what are you doing over there? Nothing. Looking up some stats. Draymond, you suck! Add the line for two more. And one more shot, but here it is. That'd be great. You'd go viral.
Starting point is 00:20:21 You've been looking to go viral. I mean, we're looking at, yeah, I'm not looking to go viral that direction. That's for sure. By the way, being this, Dremont, have you seen the, number of Draymond Green AI created photos of what Dremont Green would be if he was not a Golden State Warrior. No. There's been one of him in a Popeye's
Starting point is 00:20:39 shirt. There's one with him in a Walmart Greener's shirt. Oh, come on. No, that's stop. Yeah. So he might not be a Hall of Famer, honestly. Oh, no, no, no. He's going to the Hall of Fame. No, I'm saying, I'm saying if he were in another organization. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he fit the skill sets of Clay and Steph like a glove. Yeah, I get you. So, back to my point.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Oh, so yeah, I would not myself boo him. I can't crush, but I would, so under the category, but I wouldn't do it, but I understand why some did. Does that make any sense to you? Yeah, I will still say it's bad and you shouldn't have done it. Yeah, I would still say that. I would lean that direction as well. Because again, if Lance was a cocky guy, bad dude, had never done anything,
Starting point is 00:21:24 taking the team for a financial ride, created some disharmony because of, of tough contract negotiations. Then there's an expectation of, but guys, this is the second start in three years. I just, I'm going to give him a little bit more slack. I think you have to give the guy credit for,
Starting point is 00:21:40 because he very only said, you know, let me tell you, here's the real just of it, friends. He could have just said, look, I've had two,
Starting point is 00:21:47 three major arm, elbow, four arm situations. I can call it a career. He's probably made 50 million plus dollars in his career, if not more. So he wanted to come back and do it. 1030,
Starting point is 00:21:56 sports talk seven, and he would take more of your phone calls coming up with Bob and Brian. The rest of you, join us, please. 713-212-5-7-90. If you were at the game on Saturday, how did you handle Saturday? That's an easy question. How did you handle Saturday here on Sports Talk 7-90? We thank you for being a part of this radio show today. We want you here until 2 o'clock. You may have appointments or calls to make, but come on back. We're going to be here every single day, 10 o'clock until 2.
Starting point is 00:22:20 And we thank you very much for spending part of your day with us here on Sports Talk 790. 7-1-3-2-2-5-7-90 is how you reach the show. If you want to jump in there. conversation. That's 713-212-5-7-90. Bob is in Texas City. Bob, you're at the game on Saturday. Tell us about your night. It can't get any better. Let me just preface this. Me and my buddy, we're both 70 years old. We're big sports family. We're going to go on games for years. Wives usually weren't interested until they met Jeremy Payne up at the Galleria like a year and a half ago. Now they're experts. So we end up the game Saturday after we take their pitchers, The Hall of Fame wall, the gap, hop, all the stuff headed to our seats.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Get all the popcorn and everything ready. Game starts. They can't wait because the colors is cute. They love him. Three batters in. They're wanting him go to the farm system. Wanting to know how he ever got pulled up. Wanted to know why we don't bring in Hunter Brown because he had a couple
Starting point is 00:23:21 innings left. He could have pitched nine last night. I had to answer those kind of questions for 10, well, for nine innings. because these gals ain't leaving until the last pitch of the last inning. And so I just, I can't imagine anybody enjoying the game more than me and Danny did. All right. So, Bob, first of all, I empathize with you, okay? And secondly, I'm going to ask you a line of questioning that is not meant to be derogatory towards your wife.
Starting point is 00:23:46 So please stay with me on this, okay? Are you ready? Okay. Yes, sir. So your wife asked you why Hunter Brown could not replace Lance McCullors during the game. accurate, yes or no? Yes, in the first inning because he did so good
Starting point is 00:24:04 last night that he ought to come in and do it again today. I mean, it makes sense. I mean, did you want to hit her? Did you want to hit her? Don't get gently. I mean, like... By then, I'm trying to roll up my popcorn thing
Starting point is 00:24:17 sharp enough to cut my throat because I knew I had another eight and a half inning bit on the question. Okay, so that might be, and again, Bob, you probably have a beautiful wife and Mary in a Long timing for that, I congratulate you. I do.
Starting point is 00:24:29 But that's really, that's about as, I mean, I don't know if the term of elementary baseball analysis could be put into play, but that's, did it get any worse than that? Or was that the crescendo? Was that the number one thing that you'd shut your head out? No, I mean, there's so many. I tell people, tell real life, it's better than stuff you can make up. There were, there were questions. I hope they take him.
Starting point is 00:24:53 This is what she did with Lance. They wanted them just taking, taking back the farm system. I can't believe they let him. pitch. Okay, got all the stuff that goes on. Then we get in the car. We had no idea that the death threat thing came through. Yeah. And then it was, oh my gosh, I can't believe he was out there trying so hard. And they ought to give that man, you know, all his props for trying. He wasn't trying to throw balls and give up home run. And for the whole time he was in the game, she hated him. And then if we tried to talk good about him, we got hammered in, then on the way home,
Starting point is 00:25:24 then it's just one game. They're trying to save innings. And that, It doesn't matter. You know, if they would have brought somebody in that could have, you know, Hunter Brown could have got him out. Well, hun, that's not the way it works. Well, I'm wrong. I mean, I've been married that long to know that I'm wrong about other things, but I never realized I was so wrong about sports until she met Jeremy Payne.
Starting point is 00:25:46 So that's my baseball lie from here on that. Let me tell you, Bob, this is the caller of the month, and we're only into May. And so you're off to a fantastic star. Congratulations. I appreciate it. but I don't know what to tell you guys. Oh, I do. We're in section 113.
Starting point is 00:26:03 If you ever want to learn baseball, come to road 32, 13, and 14. Let me tell you. I'm going to avoid section 113 and 112 and 114 just to make sure I don't get to hear her talk baseball, even from a section over. Okay, now here's the kicker. Section 112 is usually the visitor's section. So we had all the Cincinnati fans there, and she was mad at them. So, you know how well.
Starting point is 00:26:26 It was just a joyful night. I can't wait until we go back. Thank you, guys. Thank you. Bob, I have one recommendation for you. Just make it a bros night, right? I didn't know we were getting, take my wife, please, material on the show today. Let me tell you about Bob's call.
Starting point is 00:26:49 The day after Mother's Day. Let me tell you about Bob, and I never meant Bob. Bob loves his wife. Bob absolutely. He adores her. He adores her. And it's cool that a couple of guys in her 70s are still double dating and going to baseball games.
Starting point is 00:27:03 But there was a conversation between Bob and his buddy that were like, why are we bringing these bitches with us? He didn't say bitches per se, but they were thinking it. Yeah, he might have said broads, ladies? No, there wasn't ladies brought up in the conversation. It was much more of a derogatory phrasing. Skeezers? No, I called him skeezers.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Boppers? I think his bitches was about as bad as I got. He said, what are these boppers doing up in here? I mean, it would be like, oh, God, I don't even know. what the reversal that would be like. It would be like trying to watch one of their TV shows on Bravo or something and having to dissect what's going on with their relationships. You know, like, I will sit in with my wife sometimes and she's watching these real housewives of said city. And I'm like, that makes no sense.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Why is, why doesn't she just do this? And she's like, I don't need your commentary. I know this show. You don't know it. Oh, man. That was pretty funny stuff. Poor Bob. Poor Bob.
Starting point is 00:28:05 Thoughts and prayers. That's impressive. out to Bob. Shout out to Bob. You know we ought to do one night. Just bring Hunter Brown in. I mean, it makes logical sense. We should call,
Starting point is 00:28:13 we should have a Married-Nighted night. Remember how much Al-hated Peg? Yes. That's what it felt like. It felt like the, what do they call that, that club they had? No-ma'am? No-man.
Starting point is 00:28:22 It's like they're a no-man. We should have a no-man night. No girls come to our game. Dude's night out. Bro's night out. Yeah. All right. Let's talk to, I think, why is Bob trying to call back?
Starting point is 00:28:35 I don't know. Bob's in trouble? Yeah, Bob's probably already in hot water. This is probably his wife calling on her a different phone number. Hi, Brian, you're on 7-90. How was the game on Saturday? Well, my experience clearly wasn't as bad as Bob, so now I feel a little bit better about it all.
Starting point is 00:28:51 I weave in the afternoon and we're like, oh, let's see what my son who plays high school baseball, so at least I had some decent conversation during the game. But we got Crawford box seats. So we're like, oh, perfect. We sit down literally burger, beer, 10 runs. and the only thing that kept us there because we're in the property boxes
Starting point is 00:29:09 and we're like, well, at least we might get a home run this way. That's the only of them we got saving us. But we had two worse than Bob, I guess, in a way, two guys around us who are clearly the experts of baseball who were rattling off the batting averages from the scoreboard and telling their kids, and this is what a ERA is. It was pretty brutal, but after Bob's saying,
Starting point is 00:29:33 I feel like I'm a pretty lucky guy. So thanks to Bob. for the Monday morning. Bob, I don't know if, Bob, you could, if anybody's going to be able to top your phone call because going to the Hunter Brown pitch well last night, bringing back out there is, that's really going to be hard to meet.
Starting point is 00:29:48 Now, let me ask you this, Brian. I don't mean to pocket watch you here, but how much money did you spend on Saturday between your group of people that you were with? Well, $50 in, just me and my son. So I was $50 in with a gold medal light and a cheeseburger at 10-0. Well, that just makes you drink a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:30:06 So it was a solid $300,400, $200,000. Oh, God, you poor man. And they should issue refunds. You know what? They should issue refunds if it's 10-0 after one-third of an inning or one inning. There was a group behind this that walked in like, I don't know, third inning, right when we were scoring those six runs. And they're all excited. I'm like, did you see the rest of the score?
Starting point is 00:30:31 We're like, oh, God. So anyway, the six runs in that third inning, I think. did make it like, okay, we may have a shot here. And it was the Reds. It was the Reds. Thank you, Brian, for the phone call. You know, it's funny. You know, when you hit the foul pole, you get the free chicken or somebody strikes out.
Starting point is 00:30:48 I mean, there's a different contest. Yeah. So Bob called back. Just let me tell you guys that you said, I can say it be word on here. Yeah, you can. But I don't say it a lot. All right, but he said that was the most of his word out of the six-a-day. Oh, so he admits it.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Yeah. He was calling his wife and his girl bitches. That was the most of you know that. Yeah. I mean, Bob's a warm-blooded man. He understands these things. Thank you very much for that. So back to my point. If your team gets your ass kicked early, you should get some sort of retention bonus. I agree.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Or at least half off on a beer or a burger or some kind of coupon. You know how you get five free wings from a place that shall not be named if they steal a base? Yeah. Yeah. How about if you're down 10-0, you get a free chicken sandwich or something? Or the longer you, the longer you're, you're. you stay the cheaper the food is. Now you don't want to do beer. That's a good idea. If you stay and it's 12, your team is down 12 more runs, you get to eat like the burgers are half price.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Or for every inning it goes down 10% or 5%. So if you stay all nine innings, it's 45% off. So at least if you're watching a team get your ass kick, you're at least getting a decent meal out of it for a reasonable price. That's funny. And you can wait, but if they score runs and they're not down 10 anymore, you miss out on the discount. Oh, this is genius. It's dynamic pricing. Yes. It is. It's interesting. It's, it's interesting. In-game dynamic pricing. You better go trademark this for the Astros Marketing Department hops on it. I got to get on to this. I actually like this.
Starting point is 00:32:12 This is a good idea. You know, I'm tired of ideas being taken from me. I'm going to take the rest of the day off and go get this trademark somehow, said, boy. All right, 713-212-5-79 if you want to get in. 7-1-3-2-1-2-7-9-0. If you want to follow us on Twitter, by way, I've lost a lot of followers, not because of my bad takes. Although you can probably say it's probably really... That's why I haven't followed you.
Starting point is 00:32:36 inactive accounts are growing. Twitter's getting in there and they're knocking them out. Well, they were going to do that, but then people were upset because, like, let's say you're somebody you knew past and people like to have the tweets still up in remembrance. Correct. So people were mad about that, but I don't know. Okay. Yeah. I don't know what Elon's doing, but that's fine.
Starting point is 00:32:56 Yeah. So I think they're trying to do, it sounds like to me like a yearly cleansing of if you're not, because there's some people that also follow you on Twitter that just don't ever tweet. They just like to see what you're doing, but they have nothing to say. but if they don't, if they don't tweet, I think Twitter thinks that that's inactive too. Maybe ones that haven't been logged in, maybe they can. Yeah. There's got to be something.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I don't know. Because I would say the people that I've lost, I'm like, who are these people? I went and looked and like they haven't tweeted since like 2015. I mean, we're talking about like 10, 9, 10 years ago they haven't tweeted in. Okay. So it is what it is.
Starting point is 00:33:25 So if you want to follow me, come on in. We don't bite. I don't over tweet. I don't send out minutia that you don't care about. Oh, I do to do that sometimes. Well, you're not the worst one. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
Starting point is 00:33:41 This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Gordy was not with us on Friday. He was at some of Swingers convention. Now he's back with us here at 10-51 on a Monday for our Gordy drop-by. Good to see you. Yeah. It was a sports talk convention and my biggest process. So a bunch of Petey Blowhard is talking about how great they are in the program.
Starting point is 00:34:01 I was like, I got this midday host who was just, I got to find a way to deal with them. You have any advice? You know what they said? Let him do his thing. He's been doing it for 30 years. I think he knows what he's doing. Right. You know, I could have loved that convention. You suck-ass PDs think you know everything.
Starting point is 00:34:14 You don't know squad. Put the damn microphone in front of your face and talk for 20 hours a week. Then come back at me. You know what they did. What they did press, though, was they said, you know, now more than ever, you've got to get out more and do more station events. We're going to put together the event later this year. It's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:34:30 Yeah. 20 years of Sports Talk 790. 20 year anniversary. 20 years. Mm-hmm. those early days horrific disagree
Starting point is 00:34:41 the sports animal oh I listened trust me when I was trying to when I tried to decide which station I was going to I'm like I know which station needs more help he said this one the bars low
Starting point is 00:34:51 so refresh me you're like I can mail it in on this place you were here first then you left to Utah and Minnesota and then you came back yes I was never here when 790 was a sports station okay I worked on KTRH I used to do sports speed at night we used to have a sports show on KTR at night and then I would
Starting point is 00:35:07 actually, and then I would do morning sports sometime. I did it. I did everything in every shape. We're going to find those. I want that audio. I want to hear those shows. Oh, sports meet? Yeah. Who was on that with you? I don't want to talk about it. You don't want to talk about it? I mean, no, no.
Starting point is 00:35:26 I usually am an open can of information, but I'm going to stay back on that. But the point being, it was just. Yeah, it's not great. So, yeah, I, uh, June, uh, December of 2009, or no, October 2009, my wife and I like, let's go back to Houston. So I kicked the tires that I had two offers here in town. And, uh, I said, I need to listen to each one of the stations to see what the vibe is. And this station was replaying segments from earlier in the show verbatim, which I could not believe. I'm like, guess what? I think I know where I'm going to go.
Starting point is 00:36:01 And then Barry's called me, Matt, I want to have you do the morning sports on K-T-R-H, and then I'm going to have you do the Astros post-game shows, and then I'm going to have you do a three-hour midday show, and I'm going to pay you this. And I said, do I get endorsements? No, I'll take all of them from you. I'm like, okay, that's, no, it was not true. But that, Michael Berry was actually the one that hired me, and that was December 2009. Wait, so you've been, but then you left? No, I came back, I came in January, came back in January 2010. Gosh, so you've been on this station since January of 2010? Correct. Good God.
Starting point is 00:36:33 I know. You were here shortly there after, right? You've been here a long time. 11, 12? February, 2012. Okay. How long, were you the, is day one producer? I, yes, I was.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Are you sure? We always, I always tell you this. I was there day one, but I was a floater. I was rotating floater. So I became full-time about a month in. February, you were starting in January. By February, I was full-time and you were full-time guy. Because it was a transitional period.
Starting point is 00:36:58 They were doing hiring, but I was next up. So I was going to be your guy. So you worked the first show with me. Yes. And did you do the, do the, second show with me. I don't think I did. Then it was, then it was floating. I probably worked half the shows for the first month.
Starting point is 00:37:11 When did you first crack your mic open? You know, I used to say stuff in his ear because Charlie Polillo wouldn't let me talk on air and so I would just say stuff into Charlie's ear. And I did it to Matt and he was like, are you saying that on air? Or, because that's just how I thought things went. And he was like, open your mic, say it on air. And then the rest is history. Sorry, Matt. It's really my fault.
Starting point is 00:37:29 It's your fault. Now you handcuffed yourself this guy. Sorry. This silver tongue over here is that. Got silver because of me. Well, I told him, I said, look, I said, I'm going to equal opportunity. If I'm going to bust your balls, you must come after me. Well, because you told me I was funny, and you said for me to talk about it. Yeah, and I was, it was a bad character judgment there. Sucker?
Starting point is 00:37:46 Fifteen years of regret. Now, I've cried and scratched and clawed my way into studio with you. Jonathan wasn't even born back then. That's how long you'd be doing radio. I guess someone was going to do that. Yeah. Yeah, well, you're the third grade when this show started. He was picking his nose.
Starting point is 00:38:00 I was in fifth grade? He was picking his nose watching SpongeBob. I was eight. This was two weeks ago. All right. Okay, we were talking about the Astros. Yes. We're going to get to Janus.
Starting point is 00:38:11 I know this is such a minutia question, but do you know my son, my middle son who graduated from A&M on Thursday? Whoop. Spent last night. Spent last night looking at the contract of the A&M baseball coach. He won't. Are you looking for opt-outs and buyouts?
Starting point is 00:38:28 For those of you that don't know, A&M baseball has been disappointing this year. Now, two weeks are getting better. They were getting better. Two weeks ago, they took two out of three from LSU. That was a big, big deal in Agueland. Huge. So this past weekend, they had Missouri, you don't know this.
Starting point is 00:38:44 They had Missouri come in. Winless Missouri. Missouri had not won a conference game. They were 0 in 24. Missouri Ross. Went to college station and swept the Aggies. Oh, three straight times. And I mean, three blowouts too, man.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Friday night it was like, oh, my God, they actually won. But you thought A&M was going to come back and win the next two. They got swept. That's a shame. They also got swept in Austin. They are now going to make history guys as the first team ever to start the season as the preseason
Starting point is 00:39:12 number one and not make the postseason. Historically bad. That's a shame. They would have to go sweep Georgia to sweep. That's tough. All Payton, you know, Payton's been home with us a few days. He's running in, like, I'm trying to now, I'm like, you know, a long weekend. Dad, the buyouts only this. I'm like, son, I don't need this
Starting point is 00:39:28 right now. Yeah, make a little donation, pops. But let's go. Trevor Alberts is going to let him go. I don't know. It's a lot of money. It's only $2.9 million or something. I think it's a baseball money. Maybe you didn't miss it.
Starting point is 00:39:39 You missed this, but they're still paying Jimbo Fisher. Yeah, that's a super bad. There was a story a few months ago. They were cutting back on supplies, like, pens and paper supplies to save every dollar set they could. Really? Yes. Well, they've laid off a bunch of people, too.
Starting point is 00:39:53 I mean, they don't. I thought the department is smaller today than when Treve Albert's got there. That's the sacrifice they made to buy a tuition. Keeps going up. Great job, guys. So I just wanted to bring that up. My son is just, he's a hundred, and he's now an alum,
Starting point is 00:40:07 the ring is turning the other direction now, he's all way. Let it be in a lesson. You never hire the guy, the interim that everybody rallies around. That never works out. Hey, Rodney Terry says it's not a big deal. Rodney Terry, how'd that one work out? Come on.
Starting point is 00:40:20 How do y'all feel about coaches and waiting? They don't do that anymore. It's still happening at U of H. Who was, uh, who was my guy the defense quarter of Texas? Oh, Will Mustamp was. Will Muschamp was. He was.
Starting point is 00:40:31 He was. And then that day. It didn't work out. All right. So what else you got? Got Astros? Oh, we got a big Carbock this Sunday. Doing a watch party.
Starting point is 00:40:41 You want to come out? I'm busy. It's early, too. It was supposed to be. It was a one o'clock game in Dallas. It's going to be a noon game on Roku now. 18th. Look, let me tell you guys this weekend, you got games this weekend, Astros games.
Starting point is 00:41:00 You got an MLB network game, you got an Apple TV game, and you got a Roku game. 790 is free. Stream the games right here on sports talk 790. Forget watching them on TV. Listen on 790. I plan on on being hung over that morning, so we'll see. I can make it out there. Roku, those games are at 11 o'clock?
Starting point is 00:41:17 It's noon. noon central. So that means an 11 a.m. pregame, I will have you out there, Carbock brewing. Oh, thank you. They'll have $5. Crawford box for us. So you come on out. You know what if I'm hung over. A $5. Crockford might do me right.
Starting point is 00:41:28 This is going to be our last, now it's going to get a little bit hotter this weekend. But every weather person has been saying this is probably going to be the last like bearable weekend outside. After this, it's going to be, you know, an inferno every weekend. So come on out to Karbach this Sunday. We'll be doing a watch party and grab you a nice Cole Crawford Bach while you're watching the Astros. It just goes perfect. All right.
Starting point is 00:41:47 Last thing before you roll, how about the fact that if the president gets what he wants, he's going to create this NIL subcommittee that's going to be led by Nick Saban and the guy that sold his oil and gas company in Lubbock, who's a big Red Raider NIL guy for $4 billion. He's going to be co-chairing. this with Nick Savenan. I hate it. Tommy Tuberville's been one of the big ones pushing this. Look, I just, I think
Starting point is 00:42:09 there's a line on, like, somewhere along the line, we've created this narrative that, oh my God, college sports is just in a terrible spot right now. It's in an awful spot. I'm going, you guys are watching the games, right? Like, we've got an expanded playoff. We've got, you know, NCAA tournament
Starting point is 00:42:25 was awesome. Like, everything is actually, the product is good right now. I understand people are angry that kids are getting millions of dollars. And Nico EML Oliava. I think we should look at it as it's a learning experience, but I don't know why old people are so mad that kids are getting paid money. Because this, and I'll grab you a nice Cole Crawford Bach while you're watching the Astros. It just goes perfect. All right. Last thing before you roll. How about the fact that if the president does, gets what he
Starting point is 00:42:51 wants, he's going to create this NIL subcommittee. That's going to be led by Nick Saban and the guy that sold his oil and gas company in Lubbock, who's a big Red Raider NIL guy for $4 billion. he's going to be co-chairing this with Nick Saven I hate it Tommy Tuberville's been one of the big ones pushing this I look I just I think there's a line on like somewhere along the line we've created this narrative that
Starting point is 00:43:13 oh my God college sports is just in a terrible spot right now it's in an awful spot I'm going you guys are watching the games right like we've got an expanded playoff we've got you know NCAA tournament was awesome like everything is actually the product is good right now
Starting point is 00:43:29 I understand people are angry that kids are getting millions of dollars and Nico Yamaliyava I think we should look at it as it's a learning experience but I don't know why old people are so mad that kids are getting paid money because this college sports was a million dollar business that became a billion dollar
Starting point is 00:43:45 business and all we expected the kids to go oh well you get a scholarship that's good enough right no the billionaire is stuff in their pockets so I don't I don't like this whole thing on Trump and everybody coming and he's going oh we need to get a wrangle on this NIL why why do you care if somebody wants to write a check to a player and
Starting point is 00:44:01 Waste their millions of dollars, let them. It's America. It's right on the SEC Playbook. Tell them. You're right on the U.S.S.C. It was behind closed doors. Let's go. You give a kid a duffel bag of cash.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Now it's just out in the open. Like, this isn't going to stop it. It's not going to prevent it. I'll have it to tell the truth. Take on this coming up in a half an hour. Thank you very much, Gore. We know that you hate the kids and you don't want them to get paid. So we'll see how it goes.
Starting point is 00:44:24 I want the kids to get paid, especially volleyball players in an Atlantic 10 school. Rimes with Bull Rylund. Yeah. Hypocrite And I open a volleyball Full Car lones Take a break we're way over
Starting point is 00:44:40 Airline Reserman Airline Miles for Dad 1105 Sports Talk 790 We are here at hour number two Of four You know what If we ever had to open mic night
Starting point is 00:44:52 I think I'm going to take the material I used About Mother's Day And use it I think people would be like That's pretty damn funny Because I'm not a great comedic writer. Yeah, Matt.
Starting point is 00:45:01 Mother's suck. Great stuff. Yeah, they're the worst. We all hit our mothers. I didn't say that. You're, no. Is that the reaction you think you're getting? No.
Starting point is 00:45:10 If that's, if that's, no, go back and listen to the show, damn it. I'm just saying that, go back and listen to the podcast. It was some of my best work,
Starting point is 00:45:21 some of my best non-sports takes. Available on all your major podcast platforms. Of course, you can find it on the IHeart Radio app, but we're also available on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Spreaker. other atlas as well.
Starting point is 00:45:33 And by the way, if you're on the high heart radio, go to your little favorites thing. Yes. And make us a number one preset. Make us your number one preset. It's a company initiative. You'd really help us out. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:45:43 I'll buy you some beer. Yeah. We need to get our number. We're getting our ass kick by Minneapolis. I mean, come on. Please just make us. They're a different animal out there. Please just make us a number one preset.
Starting point is 00:45:53 We're throwing the company among sports station. Yeah, but I mean, a little Minneapolis. Let's go, Houston. Minneapolis ain't little any more. That's true They're fierce They're also in the FM dial too Imagine how powerful we'd be if we were on the FM dial
Starting point is 00:46:09 Sports Sports talk 97 Something What do you know We would knock off sunny Yeah don't you buy a frequency for us Sunny Sports 99.1 We'd only speak in positives
Starting point is 00:46:21 Dana Tyson's going to cut you You gotta watch out I don't need that Can imagine doing Dana doing middays Hey everybody It's me a light and airy show today Yeah You know, the Astros on Saturday, they lost 10 nothing, but they came back.
Starting point is 00:46:36 Sonny. They really fought back. They really tried. Sports 99.1. Or Delilah. Delilah breaking down Jalen Green. Are the Texans losing in a Christmas? You know what?
Starting point is 00:46:44 Jalen Green really tried hard. How about this? It's important, folks. The Texans got their ass kicked this past Christmas, but it was the spirit of the season. At least the players got home to their families in time to have dinner. Hard life lessons. Yeah. You know, sometimes the downtime.
Starting point is 00:47:00 They really make you appreciate the good times. Could we do an entire four-hour show with nothing but positive takes? You know what? I was saying that last week. We kind of talked about this and we never did it because we do like shut your bum ass up slash ain't nobody got time for that. Why can't we do? I've got time for that or something else similar.
Starting point is 00:47:15 You know what? We were talking about this last week. Why don't we do and say what was the opposite of shut your bum ass up? Please tell us a much about it. Please tell me more. Please keep going. I don't know. We'll have to brainstorm this.
Starting point is 00:47:27 We have got two days. This Wednesday will be the debut of. the opposite of shut your bum ass up. How about we need more of this? Give me more? That's got a connotation. Give me some mo. We could play James around. Give me some mo.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Show meetings. Yeah, we'll have a show meeting for the first one in 15 years. Mike was at the Astros game. It was a pleasant experience. You got to spend time with family and friends, correct, Mike? Yeah, I did. I did. I took my son to the game and, of course,
Starting point is 00:48:01 to nothing wasn't very helpful, but the guys behind me had some pregame drinks, and they were hollering at Cam Smith asking if he could pitch. Asking who? Smith in the right field. Oh, Cam Smith, if he could pitch. He's got a good arm out there. He can hit 93. He is a good athlete.
Starting point is 00:48:23 I mean, I'm not going to dot him. Yeah, and then they started on the ball boy asking him if he could pitch. And then he got kind of boring. towards the middle innings, and then the girl sitting next to my son started asking him, since you're not interested in the game, can you take pictures of us? That's how old is your son? He's 24. And how old is the girls out taking pictures?
Starting point is 00:48:50 They were probably in their 20s, 25. Is your son single? Yes, he was, and he did get a digit. Oh, see? That's a good game. So, Mike, let's be honest. Your son didn't call him have a bad time. you had a bad time. He had a great time. Don't ruin his joy.
Starting point is 00:49:06 Yeah, he told me don't rain on his parade. And I was like, really, dude? I spent $300 on tickets. Oh, yeah. You got a number? He should be thanking you. Right. Okay, well, give us. That's how that went on Saturday. So he got, he was taking pictures of girls. He got a number. You spent $300. You left with a frown and left for the smile on his face. Pretty much. But we're going to all. Arlington this weekend, so we're going to, this is going to be our first experience over there.
Starting point is 00:49:36 So we're going to wear Astros gear and hopefully they'll show up. Well, hopefully you don't get hit by people too. It'd be very careful when you're up there. Yeah, we've never been there before. I've heard bad things about that place. Well, you know, it's just the, it's Arlington. Thank you for the phone call, my man. Arlington, it's just a home of, I mean, it's just pawn shops and grime.
Starting point is 00:49:56 It's low-in fast food. Mm-hmm. I mean, I can't really understand. I mean, it really, it's, I'm not trying to stereotype, but that's what it is. Yeah, when Gordy and I went for the playoffs, I think the nicest meal we had was at the Bendys. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:50:10 Yeah. I mean, it's true. And we put a mayonnaise on my burger when I asked for mustard. And we teased about the parade going right through a Walmart and a Target and all that, and they literally did that. They didn't even go to Dallas to do it, which would have been weird because it's not even close to Dallas. It's probably 45 minutes.
Starting point is 00:50:29 Get ready, folks. Suburban sports life. It's coming. At least for the football team. I think you're on to something there. Yeah. Because I was watching Sports Sunday. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:44 Aaron Wilson was talking about that. What was he saying? He was saying that basically pretty much that the team does want to explore a suburban type of, basically everything you've been saying. Yeah. Texas Live type of palace in the suburbs. These sports owners, they see what other cities are doing. Like, this is good. This is fun.
Starting point is 00:51:01 Give me the land. Give me a good sweetheart deal. build my and I get to collect everything. Mm-hmm. I mean, Hannah, Hannah knows. I don't think Cal really particularly cares. I just think he doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Well, he looks at his check. He looks in his debit card amount and there's like, you know, when you look at your debit and you're like, man, I got an extra $50 and I'm pretty like, when you run out of zeros and fives and sevens to put on the pay, when you're a little debit card, when you get $40 out and it gives you the receipt, when it comes out to a third receipt because all the zeros are on there,
Starting point is 00:51:33 you think really Cal's overly concerned about what's going to happen? I mean, for his kids, kids, kids. It's above his understanding. That's okay. It's like trying to teach your dog astrophysics. It's just some things are above some people's understandings. Yeah. And that's why Hannah's always within two steps of him,
Starting point is 00:51:49 just to make sure everything gets taken care of. Comments don't get over discussed or misconstrued or that kind of thing. You know, misspeak, yeah. Yeah. It's going to be very careful. curious who's going to carry the water for this campaign. They need to go to a Super Bowl and then they'll get whatever they want. That's the easiest thing. You lose again in the divisional playoff.
Starting point is 00:52:16 I wish you luck. Because you brought a new president who's not from here, who has no Houston connections. All he does is build stadiums. I mean, the handwriting was on the wall. And you can't, you don't have a, Henri Johnson is soft-spoken. He's not going to be able to carry the we need this and they're doing a good job of kind of like a soft opening like talking about this publicly now nothing happening we're always bringing up we're exploring practice facility first exploratory yeah yeah we're not sure we'll see it's coming you better be ready sit him talk took over five years of my young broadcast career ross you may be in it too the difference is
Starting point is 00:52:59 the NFL's not letting Houston leave with that too and but adams the city hated him right and he was they were asking, he kept asking for more, more, more, more, and then the city hit the hit a limit. Here's what's going to happen. This is happening in a lot of sports cities in the last 10 years. In a nutshell, uh, these sports teams go to the city and the city says, shut you bomb ass up. And they want to pay it for themselves. Not every situation.
Starting point is 00:53:22 Like, for instance, who did I, I got, I got a text from somebody that said somebody just built it themselves. Oh, God. Oh, it hurts what I can't think of the city. There's a city that, that is building a new facility. and they're paying it for themselves. Hmm. You have to look it up.
Starting point is 00:53:39 In the NFL? I'm not a 100% sure. God, it hurts when I don't know these things. But there's somebody that's paying. There's a new D.C. stadium. That's what it was. I think D.C. is paying for everything. I don't think they are.
Starting point is 00:53:54 No, no, no. They're paying two thirds, I think. But somebody's paying for it all. I got, oh, this is going to bother me. Oh, well. Gary and Spring, hang tight. We'll get to you to come a minute. The Bears?
Starting point is 00:54:04 No, I don't. Yeah. I'm sorry. We'll figure it out. 713, 212, 790. 1119 on the Matt Thomas show at Ross. Now, boys, we have to tell the truth coming up in 10 minutes. I only believe one of the four things.
Starting point is 00:54:21 Okay. So that's actually a little easier. Three falsehoods. I think it's harder, right? More falsehoods that are believable that you believe, if that makes sense. So that three times fast. That it's believable that you believe them. Correct.
Starting point is 00:54:34 So three of the four, I don't believe. one, I do believe. Okay. And that's coming up today in about 10 minutes from now. 713-212-5-790 is the way you reach our program. Then if you want to join us, we've got to tell the truth. We have, if you own a grade out how Ross did it on Sports Sunday last night, you're more than welcome to do that. Okay, thank you. And follow me on Instagram at Sports RV. Trying to build it up. Trying to build it up at Sports RV. It's not really worth it. It's just more regurgitated stuff. You know, hey, look at me. I'm on television. I'm a star. now. Who needs that? Influencer
Starting point is 00:55:08 initiatives at IHeartMedia. Please follow me at Sports RV on Instagram. And you thought just adding your name would make all the difference in the world. Imagine that. What do you mean? Matt Thomas showed Ross would sound better. No, I didn't think it would make much. At least, you know, we had to try.
Starting point is 00:55:26 We had to give it a college try. I think it's been better. Things have been better. It's getting there. 7-1-3-1-2-5-790. 7-1-3-2-1-2. I got to restart. thing. Are equipment not working? Yeah, are you shocked? All right.
Starting point is 00:55:41 I cannot, maybe else try Gary in Spring on 790. Gary, thanks for holding. Good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. Great show, as usual. I have two topics here. One is the, I forget the three letters,
Starting point is 00:55:52 but it's the college kids are getting paid. NIL? NIL. Name, image, and likeness. Yeah. Okay. And the other one is the volleyball. I'll get to the second one.
Starting point is 00:56:02 Second, the volleyball second. But now, I listen to your opinion there, and I respect your opinion, the younger of the two there. But I have the opposite opinion. So I can have my opinion and be right in my mind as well as you. I take it when you said it that yours is the only right opinion, but it's not. I don't believe in the athletes getting paid and getting free college tuition. I figure if they get paid, they should have to pay for their own tuition. tuition while somebody less fortunate, not getting paid, can get that scholarship.
Starting point is 00:56:40 So I just don't believe in the getting paid and a free college tuition. And I feel firmly about that. So hopefully you can respect my opinion on that as well as I respect your opinion on the opposite. Thank you, Gary. I have no issue with that. I understand that to where are you saying it's a different thing and they're not college, but also if the school is going to offer it and give it to them, then that's well within their right to take it.
Starting point is 00:57:07 You know, I don't think it's a one-for-one. Them being a scholarship does not prevent anybody else from getting a scholarship. Well, if they don't get one getting that money and they don't get that, well, then there's a scholarship open, isn't there? Yeah, but they're also providing the money and the revenues that are providing more than give up for, make up for that value. And that's why they do get the scholarships, and they also get the name image and likeness money.
Starting point is 00:57:31 It's two different things. because it's not tied into the school. The money that they're getting from the NIL collectives is basically what you would call advertisements, appearances, names, images, and likeness. It's separate from the school. Yeah, the school, put it this way, Gary.
Starting point is 00:57:44 The school is not, the scholarship limits are not being reduced because NIL money is increasing. NIA money is coming from, frankly, rich alums that just want a side pocket of the money to give to the kids. This is just circumventing, because the money cannot directly come from the school.
Starting point is 00:58:00 The NIA money at this point has to come from it, what they call a collective, which is basically a group of rich people that want to take care of athletes. So there's... Go ahead. Yeah, my question is, so they take this money, do they lose their amateur status? Are they now professionals? They have to file taxes, but they're still considered amateur athletics.
Starting point is 00:58:19 Yeah, see, I don't agree with that, too. But anyway, I'm just, like he said earlier, it's the older people. I'm old school, so... That's fine. Anyway. That was Gordy that said that, by the way. That was Gordy. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:58:31 Hey, Matt, I regret. I don't regret it because I'm going to bring it up. But anyway, Matt, do you ever look at Facebook? I just talked about it earlier today. As a matter of fact, about everybody, everybody's got the greatest mothers of all time. And I disagree. I think my mother is the greatest of all time. I believe my wife's the greatest mother of all time.
Starting point is 00:58:51 So for those of you that say, you've got the greatest mothers, you're wrong. And the reason I asked Matt, and you have a daughter playing volleyball, is she in college yet? No, she's got, she's a junior in high school. Okay, and she's going to get a scholarship. It sounds like you hope? Yes, she is. Yes.
Starting point is 00:59:06 Okay. So you've seen some of the, uh, uh, pictures of the volleyball players are posting on Facebook nowadays? Yes, I do. Yes, I do. Good, Lord. That's pornography or it's close to it. Well, that's, you're talking about NAL.
Starting point is 00:59:21 Thank you for the phone call, Gary. Let's be brutally honest. Um, the women, the young ladies, I should say young women, that are getting money that are from NIL, 90% of them are also because they're spectacularly beautiful women. That's just a reality of it. Caveter twins.
Starting point is 00:59:39 Livy, Livie Dun, Dun, DUN, D.U and E. I would say, of the top 10 female athletes that are getting NIL, my guess is safely eight or nine of them are because of their looks. But that goes to anything. I mean, models,
Starting point is 00:59:57 they're no such thing as ugly models. You're a model because you're attractive. I would say even male athletes, while of course a lot of his athletic achievements, I think it's beneficial for male. Tom Brady, to be handsome and be more marketable. That's part of the charm, I think.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Yeah. You know, somebody was talking about Jeremy Pena earlier. Jeremy Pena is on more stuff than anybody else in Houston as far as Astros athletes to me or just about. They're handsome dude. And that helps. It makes you more marketable. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:00:29 And charismatic and can smile and can say a few things. I mean, if you're soft-spoken, you're not going to happen. But I would say also those women that are very attractive are not afraid to get on their Instagram and post and not afraid to get on their Snapchat. Hey, if you got to do that. If it's going to make you some cash, go ahead. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:45 Now, my daughter, unfortunately, is very active at Instagram and Snapchat. Not in that kind of thing, but she's got a lot of friends and she snaps and does all the thing. And so it's going to be a difficult run for me in the next four or five years. I'm sorry, Matt. Be checking that out a lot. No, just stay off. That's a stay away.
Starting point is 01:01:02 Feels like a stay away. Don't do that to yourself, man. I'm not a father, so I can't tell you how to father, so I don't know. But it feels like a stay away. I can tell you with the girl name. Let me. Hey, Jonathan, stay with me for a second here. Will, hang on.
Starting point is 01:01:14 Put Will on hold for a second. And we'll screen a call in a second. Let me just say something real quick. So, Jonathan, my wife and my daughter and I are having these conversations about what her life's going to be like when she leaves us in a couple of years to go to Rhode Island. She wants to do this. She wants to go to Boston the weekend. She wants to go to New York on the trains.
Starting point is 01:01:28 and I'm like, slow your roll down, girl. Just get into college and do that first. Then do all your little adventuresomes. But she's already trying to test the waters of what she can get away with without mom and dad around. She spent her whole life in Kingwood, man. You got to let her spread her wings and fly. Is she going to be by herself?
Starting point is 01:01:45 Her freshman year, she will not have a car. How easy is it to get to? Like you can just train, like AM track or like that type of thing? Yeah, that's kind of thing. Okay. You know what I'll say? She won't have time to. I would agree with you on that.
Starting point is 01:01:58 Yeah, she's an athlete. Yeah. They don't have to wear it too bad. Even in volleyball and spring ball, like the off season, they sell the travel. So they do. And plus, like for, I know for SFA, they had a rule, the team rule. You can't leave the city on like certain days. Oh, I like that idea.
Starting point is 01:02:14 So like. But the problem is we went up for her recruiting trip. And all the girls are like, they're like, hey, Carly, can't, you know, you should come here, play here. We hang out with all the brown boys, the Harvard boys. We hang out with all. Because there's a lot of great schools. Oh, no. She's going to marry a Harvard boy.
Starting point is 01:02:28 This is horrible. And then I thought to myself, well, it's better than saying like SFA. I mean, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to the downgrade SFA. But if she's going to be someone with him, it's a Brown or Harvard kid, I'm okay with that. Okay, well, then you know what? Let's shoot for Harvard. But yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:43 Take Brown if you have to. Yeah, if we're going to Harvard, then, you know. I'll take any Ivy League. Bill O'Brien graduated Brown. Can't be that hard. Oh, snap. She just wants to have two adventures. I'm like, girl, you're 17 years old.
Starting point is 01:02:59 Relax. And she's a junior now in high school? You're junior high. Junior in high school, yeah. She's been caged up in the depths of Kingwood. She'd be caged up. She'd been driving around town. Let her spread her wings and fly.
Starting point is 01:03:10 Perfect. Let her senior year just be free. She's going on a cruise this summer. She's already been down to Gavis and a couple times. Oh, my. She loves Gavis and by the way. She don't know no better. Well, stop.
Starting point is 01:03:21 It's wrong with you. I can tell you right now. She ain't even being around Uncle Ross. I don't know. I'm telling her a sudden here in right and wrong directions. I got some life advice for her. All right. To tell the truth is up next.
Starting point is 01:03:35 Three of the four sports takes. I'm going to give you the next segment. I don't believe. It's up to Ross and John to decide which ones I do believe. I actually do, ladies and gentlemen. Remember, I think the easiest thing to do in life is to lie. The average person lies at least four times a day. I'm probably above that.
Starting point is 01:04:08 Yeah. I got you clocked at 17 a day, I think. I mean, I probably have lied 17 times in a day. I don't mean the last time I did it, but it's been a while. All right, ladies gentlemen, I've got four sports takes. It's up to Jonathan and Ross. Now, Jonathan, I don't think you've even hit one to tell the truth yet. I've got all the wrong.
Starting point is 01:04:26 You've got every single one of these wrong. Is that true? Yeah. He's a goose. He's got a goose. He's got a one and four shot. Come on, Jonathan. At minimum.
Starting point is 01:04:36 All right. Turn out of music. I told you. You got to get into the mind of a madman. Yeah. Remember, this is because these are my takes. I mean, they're good takes. Yeah, he doesn't.
Starting point is 01:04:43 He's exactly. Like no game sevens and stuff like that. Right. All right. There are four takes. I only believe one of them. Only believe one. One.
Starting point is 01:04:51 Let me write this down. All right. Tonight is the NBA draft lottery. If San Antonio or Houston lands in the one, two, three, or four spot, that pick will be used to help acquire Janice at the Guimpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. That's what it's going to take for Milwaukee to go, okay, I need some other parts of it, but I think part of what will be a trade of a top three NBA player will have to involve a top four NBA draft pick. Okay?
Starting point is 01:05:24 Okay. So I think Janice ends up. with one of the two teams if so make sure I make sure right. Yannis ends up with one of these two teams if either San Antonio and or Houston end up in the top four. Okay. Okay. Number two. I want you to need not worry.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Oklahoma City, the heavy favorite. Boston, the heavy favorite. They're still going to win their series. I know these things are competitive right now, back and forth, 2-1 right now. The Knicks are up and you got 2-2 Oklahoma City in Denver. need not worry. The Thunder and the Celtics are still going with these series. Okay.
Starting point is 01:06:00 Okay. Number three. I'm afraid we're going to have to have an uncomfortable conversation about Lance McCullors pretty soon. What if that's a go down and get his mojo at the minor league, skip a turn in the start, maybe a thought of the bullpen. He's got to be out of options. I'm just saying an uncomfortable conversation could be coming up about Lance McCuller's. Okay. And number four, we're going to have this new committee that's this subcommittee that's going to ultimately be created by President Trump with his buddy Nick Saban.
Starting point is 01:06:39 We're going to have a salary cap in the NAL within the next five years. They're going to say, look, we understand the NIL. We understand you guys got to get paid. But this rampant just pay, just to pay and out budget everybody, there's going to be some sort of salary cap that's going to be applied on players per year for NIL. Okay. those are my four takes. I only believe one of them, and I'll recap them for you again. One, Janice ends up with either San Antonio or the Rockets, if either one of the two teams ends up with the one, two, three, or four in tonight's draft lottery. Number two, need not worry,
Starting point is 01:07:13 Oklahoma City and Boston are so winning their series. Number three, I'm worried we're going to have to have an uncomfortable conversation about Lance McCullors shortly. And number four, we're going to have to have an NIL. We're going to need an NIL salary cap with the next five years. Which one of the four takes do I actually tell you the truth? Okay, Ross, I don't... You said, Boston and O KC is who you said, right? Yep, not Boston and Oakland, Cleveland. Nope, Boston and New Oklahoma City.
Starting point is 01:07:39 Okay. Go ahead. What are you thinking, Jonathan? I'm going to tackle number three with Lance McCullors. I don't... Matt is a harsh person, but I don't think he's going to be that harsh. He just got back. No, Matt's been doubting Lance for a long time.
Starting point is 01:07:51 Really? That one's in play. That one's in play? Mm-hmm. Matt hates Lance McCullors, Jr.? That's not true. Actually, I heard he was sending death threats this weekend. That's not.
Starting point is 01:07:59 I'm sorry. That's not true. Hi, my name is Ross. That's not true. Matt wasn't doing that. There's, I don't agree. No, there's no salary cap with any. This is actually pretty good because all these are kind of flimsy.
Starting point is 01:08:14 In five years, he said, though. Right? I mean, Boston and A key, okay, C, are going to win their series. You know what? I'm just going to keep it simple. I'm going to go with that one. I think. But I think it's two or three maybe.
Starting point is 01:08:28 Two or three. Let's go, since I'm hearing this, let's go. I'm going with three of Winlanston-McColars. Okay. Well, I think San Antonio and Houston would be in a much better spot. I ended up in the top four. I can't guarantee that Janus is going to go there even with that. I mean, it depends if New York gets involved, Brooklyn gets involved,
Starting point is 01:08:48 Golden State Orgers get involved, a team they're not even talking about gets involved. I can't, I can't tell you that for sure, I believe it, if the Rockets or Spurs get a two, three, or four in the pick that they're going to want I'm getting honest as part of it, so I can't say that. Okay. Number two, I don't ever really seeing NIL being under control under any circumstance. It's going to be to, they're just going to have to lose amateur status. So short of that, I can't imagine them putting a salary cap on this.
Starting point is 01:09:17 They probably should, but I can't imagine anybody being able to have the governmental power to tell these league commissioners and these college presidents that you're going to have a cap on this sort of collective, especially because the money right now still Ross isn't going through the school. It's going from alums to the players. You're going to tell rich alums to not spend money? Yeah, I don't think so. I don't think so either. What I do believe is I believe we're going to have an uncomfortable conversation about Lance McCullors.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Finally. How are Boston and OKC not winning their series? I said need not worry. I can see Denver still beating Oklahoma City. I really can. Now, did Denver look tired yesterday and looked worn out? And the 36 hours between games certainly didn't help. But they still have too much.
Starting point is 01:10:05 They have a lot of firepower. They really do. All you need is one Michael Porter game to just jump out. Christian Brown hits threes. There's three games left and two of them in OKC. OKC is going to win the series. What about the Celtics, J-Lam? Brown and Tata have been horrible.
Starting point is 01:10:21 Okay. I figured it could be two or three, like I said. But I don't want the... OTC is fine. I don't want to have that... I don't want to have that uncomfortable conversation because he's worked his ass to get back, but if he continues to
Starting point is 01:10:33 and again, we're looking at a very small sample size. But there's just a part of me that says that sometimes these players, and I'm going off a history Ross, some guys have taken two, three years off, they just don't come back to where they were. And if he can't give you links and you're putting him out there
Starting point is 01:10:50 every fifth day, that's going to ultimately crush your bullpen. Yes. So as I'm saying, I'm worried that we're going to have an uncomfortable conversation about Lance colors. No, but you're saying it's coming. This isn't worried about. Yeah, you said it was coming.
Starting point is 01:11:06 Okay, I'll say it's coming. You're always changing things up on the 7th. No, no, no, no, I'll say with it. So, congratulations. Jonathan, you finally got one. Two months and I'll take. I'm proud of you. Well, and because it's a bad take. Oklahoma City is fine in that series. They're 10 and a half point favorites at home. They're going to be 5.5 point favorites on the road. And they're going to be 10.5 point favorites at home in a game seven. They're winning that series. Okay, that's one out of two. I said both, Oklahoma City and Boston. I said
Starting point is 01:11:31 Boston's going to be fine too You think Boston's going to be fine Oh okay Is that what you're saying? Is that what you're saying? Yeah Celtics Celtics on the road in the Knicks
Starting point is 01:11:39 What's the spread? Celtics minus six and a half They'd be fine Okay Well weren't the Celtics favorite at home In those two New York games? Yes they were They had 20 point leads
Starting point is 01:11:46 They're going to be fine Okay I could be wrong Okay That's not your take My take is Both of them are going to be My take is I think
Starting point is 01:11:54 I think both are in A little bit of trouble Not saying that they can't win But I said need not worry and I'm saying I'd be worried. So technically that's me not telling you the truth. Whatever. There you go.
Starting point is 01:12:09 You ever notice, Jonathan? And you haven't noticed because he's a couple months that whenever he loses in this, he always makes fun of... No, because you always have bad takes. It turned out to be wrong on this segment. He's a sore loser, huh? I'm out of here. He's bruised.
Starting point is 01:12:20 All right, he's taking a quick time out. Remember me a little longer than necessary. Not feeling well. 1143 is our time. The news at noon is coming up in 15 short minutes here on Sports Talk 7. 713-212-5-790 if you want to jump in 7-1-3-212-5-790 yes the NBA draft lottery is tonight we'll talk about that next here on Sports Talk 790 all right tonight is the NBA draft lottery I will be at Minutemate Park
Starting point is 01:12:47 so you hear me yelling and about I don't know yelling at what no I think it's going to be yelling about the rocket skin and the number one overall draft pick oh okay screaming and yelping 4%. What is it? 3.8, I forget. What is the exact? They can either be 1 through 4 or keep their 9, 10, or they can actually drop a couple of spots too. They can't be 5 through 8.
Starting point is 01:13:16 Okay. 3.8% chance, 17.3% chance at a top 4. Very interesting. Is the lottery, has it always been to 14? I thought it was 13 back in the day. No, any team that doesn't make the playoffs. There's 13, 16, it was 14. Well, I guess I'm dumb.
Starting point is 01:13:41 Well, I wouldn't say that. Thank you. Foolish, maybe, but not dumb. What a fool believes. Yeah, what a fool believes. Tended to. So, Elijah Juan's going to represent the Rockets. Yes.
Starting point is 01:13:52 Can we send Stevie Franchise back? Didn't he get the number one pick? Well, I know. EMA's gone before. Okay. Who else has represented the Rockets over the years? I think Cotino Mobley. You mentioned Steve.
Starting point is 01:14:04 Eliasuan, has he done it more than once? I think Elijah one's done it before. I'm pretty sure. I'm 99%. I'm going to give you somebody that should be kind of off the radar that I think would kind of fit. Are they on 10 to 2 Sports Talk 790? It might be. Does it rhyme with Rat Ramos?
Starting point is 01:14:25 It might. I mean, look, I've been with the organization for 10 years. Oh, longer than that. Matt Thomas or Hakeem Olajuwon? Hmm, who should we send the lottery? The greatest block shot leader? Hakeem Alajuan, the blockshot leader. with like 3,830 blocks or something.
Starting point is 01:14:44 Or a mid-radio host and decent play-by-play guy. Mid-day, Matt. Oh, mid. Okay, excuse me. Not mid-day. You're not mid, Matt. You're excellent. You're finishing by line.
Starting point is 01:14:55 I don't like that. Thank you very much. All right. Well, we'll see what happens. What time is it? They do it before the games. Is it between the games? I can't remember.
Starting point is 01:15:08 I don't want the answer. Yeah. Celtics Nix is 630, and then Timberwolves Warriors is. nine. And I think, yeah, I think, do they do it between the games? I'm trying to recall. Let's not, let's not get it. I don't know. Just tonight. What time is the NBA? This is where I need Siri to come through. Yeah. Draft. Lottery. I want to say it was before. This says 7 p.m. Is it independent of the games? Okay. Well, it's 7 p.m. no matter what. Yeah, 6 o'clock hour time. So they'll do some pop and circumstance. Hi, how are you? Here are the people. My Google says 7 p.m. Central.
Starting point is 01:15:43 Mine says 7 o'clock Eastern. May 12, 2020. Well, Google's been, ever since they added this Gemini AI thing, they get stuff wrong. It feels like way more off. Yeah, 7 Eastern is correct. Thanks, Google. I showed it to you. Jerks. Trillion dollar company and they can't even get a time zone right.
Starting point is 01:16:03 I don't know. I'm bothered by AI. I told you that I'm ready. Oh, wait. It's the draft time. I put what time NBA lottery and they put the draft. Sorry. Go ahead. So they do it before the games. Yes.
Starting point is 01:16:16 Okay. Now, I want to say in the past, they didn't have in between. I think maybe. Yeah, yeah. I think feels correct. That's not wrong. That's not wrong. So, what's I going to say?
Starting point is 01:16:27 Oh, so do we need to send, it's kind of too late to send him a lucky charm, but what would we send? We can't send anything. It's up to the basketball gods. Hopefully they smile upon us. They didn't let us pray for Victor. So Jonathan Fagan,
Starting point is 01:16:40 who used to be to cover the team for The Chronicle, told me about what it was like. And he was all this, but last year's matter of fact. They take your phones, so you can't report their results. You watch the whole process go through. You can't go to the bathroom.
Starting point is 01:16:55 You can't leave in there. Once you're in there, you better make sure your bladder's empty. Which that always wigs me out about my life. Tell me I can't go to the bathroom and I have to go to the bathroom right away. Interesting. Doesn't it always happen? Not to me. But when are you in a situation where they tell you can't go to the bathroom?
Starting point is 01:17:13 bathroom. Well, you've been, I've been on planes before they don't have bathrooms. You have? Like puddle jumpers or what? Like puddle jumpers, yeah. Oh. You should go out the side or what? No, nobody's going out the side. No. You go out the side, you're probably going to drop up a 10,000 feet. Chances of survival will be at zero percent. I don't give you a folders can or nothing. I mean, I guess. I was on a plane, commercial plane. It was a puddle jumper so tiny that the air conditioning for the plane was opening up the vents in the air from the from the outside was your cool air.
Starting point is 01:17:46 Yeah. I flew one time from Fort Lauderdale to Key West. That happened when I was on the bus in Kansas City, the shuttle at the airport shuttle. It was hot. And then they were like, yeah, we just put the windows down. Like, what is wrong with you people? Get some AC in here.
Starting point is 01:17:58 In Kansas City? No, thank you. No, thank you. Okay. So how this incorporates today. Janice was told, said a couple of hours ago, at last Shams reported that Shams Sharani from ESPN
Starting point is 01:18:09 that he's willing to contemplate of life outside of Milwaukee. Mm-hmm. And there are obviously teams that came into play. San Antonio was talked about a lot today in the morning TV shows. Houston was talked about because of draft commodity. Also, things were talked about in terms of Brooklyn
Starting point is 01:18:29 because the Nets are trying to get some little cachet back in New York area. How many times have they failed at that? The Clippers are like, hold my beer. They went with the Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett. No thanks. They went with the James Harden. They had James Hart and Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on the same team.
Starting point is 01:18:45 And couldn't get any traction. And they didn't work out. That's crazy. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers will always have to fight being second tier. I mean, it will have to take a championship of those teams in order for people to start thinking about them otherwise of being the second squad in New York or an ally. Yeah, White Sox in Chicago. New Orleans was talked about as a potential spot.
Starting point is 01:19:05 What? Well, here's a thing that was brought up yesterday on a show called Sports Sunday. I was watching. Oh, okay. somebody brought up and said, hey, if you give, if the rockets were to really pull a trigger for Yannis, and you gave him all those parts, then Yonauts would be trading one center nightmares for the other, not having great surrounding cast behind him. I'm going to tell you, and I should have said this for to tell the truth,
Starting point is 01:19:25 but it would have been so painfully obvious that you would know I was telling the truth on this. You and I talked about this a few weeks ago. I still, and I know that you're going to be mad at me about this. A man Thompson is untouchable in any trade. I'm not mad at you. Okay, so I'm going to make sure. I understand. it's reasonable.
Starting point is 01:19:42 I think if you're getting a, if you're getting Devin Booker or Janus, those guys are better than Amin Thompson. Right now. Now, Amin Thompson has ceiling. He has a potential. He's only two years in and he's been great. But if I told you in five years from now,
Starting point is 01:19:58 he's still not a good three-point shooter. And he's going to be like, he already finished fourth in defensive player of the year. Like he's going to be defensive player of the year candidate, first team all NBA. There are dynamic NBA players that are not, not great three-point shooters. Yanis is one of them,
Starting point is 01:20:14 but also he doesn't have the wingspan of Janus, he doesn't have the size of Janus. He's not the down. Janus, you're hoping, you're hoping that Amin Thompson is a defensive player of the year. You're hoping that maybe it's, I don't know if you think he's got MVP candidate written all over him.
Starting point is 01:20:30 I don't see that right now. It could happen. He won't score enough to be an MVP candidate. But he, right. All defensive team, defensive player of the year? Absolutely. Yonis average 30 and 12 and he's 30 points, 12 rebounds, like 6, 7 assists, and he's defensive player of the year candidate every year. His ceiling, he's already hit his ceiling,
Starting point is 01:20:47 and to me it's higher than what a men can do. Okay. So I understand what you're saying, and if it's going to be part of a package, it's not just going to be a men, it's probably one of Schengoon or Green as well, and a bunch of picks. And probably guys, good rotation. My guess is Taris who would be put out there on a chip. I believe Jabari Smith would be put out there in a chip,
Starting point is 01:21:06 because those two guys are a year away from their new, contracts. And I mean, I'm not saying I don't want those guys gone. I'm just saying that you, again, trades have to hurt. And amend has great value as well because he's on a rookie deal. Yonis would be coming here making 50 whatever million dollars he's making. Real quick, athletic reporter today in a story, Kelly Eco and Sam Amick, I read it this morning coming into work before I'm getting to work, that again, according to them,
Starting point is 01:21:34 doesn't mean it's a gospel, that the Rockets will not be pursuing a Devin Booker. because they feel like that they saw Devin Booker being the alpha this past year and it didn't necessarily work out for Phoenix and they remain bullish on Jalen Green. Okay, that's good. Jalen Green can get better. They would not, however, dismiss Kevin Durant. Hmm. Now, Durant's got one year left on a contract, correct?
Starting point is 01:22:01 I know Janus has got two. I know Janus has got two. You're not going to be married to him for long term if it doesn't work out. make this championship chasing doesn't work out but Durant's got to think one year left Hold on
Starting point is 01:22:17 it's taking a lot to scroll through all of his accolades and career I can't get done to the contract You're such a fan You're such a fan boy
Starting point is 01:22:23 You really are No I'm just serious 47 million yeah He's got He makes 54 million No this says two more years Oh okay I'm stupid
Starting point is 01:22:30 It's 24 25 25 2526 One more year $54.7 million Wow Woo We did that the exact same time. Yeah, it's like, thank you for that.
Starting point is 01:22:42 $54.7 million. Well, what's wrong with teams? I mean, I love these players. But when you sign these guys for over $45, $50 million, you are just opening up yourself up to a lot of win or we're screwed kind of conversation. Look at the teams that are screwed. Kevin Durant's contract, not by himself,
Starting point is 01:23:05 but when you have him and Booker and Bill together have ruined the Phoenix Suns. Yeah, but we knew that it was going to have. That was the owner, Matt Ashiba. He went nuts. He just bought the team. But we didn't think Milwaukee went nuts until all of a sudden they paid Damien, they're paying Damien Liller $50 million a year.
Starting point is 01:23:17 Yeah, but that made sense too. I mean, they were trying to do something and trying to, I mean, they ran into cap issues as well. But Matt Ishiba just went nuts. He was like, I'm going to buy. He tried to buy a championship. Yep. And he found out like Stephen Cohen did in his first couple years of the Mets,
Starting point is 01:23:31 it's not that easy. It may be just practical, just be very careful who you're spending that insane amount of money on. Because these teams have multiple 40 to $50 million. our players wind up hurting you. Unless you win it all. Well, nobody held a gun to their heads. And they're paying all that money to the players. They're paying all that money to the players because all the money they're making.
Starting point is 01:23:53 Golden State Warriors went well over the cap and spent so much in luxury tax over the last 10 years. They don't regret a penny. That's true. All right. Let's get the news at noon coming in a matter of moments. If you want to join our conversation, 713-212-5-790, the Astros with a very impressive win. yesterday did take, even though Saturday's game sucked, they did take two out of three against the Reds.
Starting point is 01:24:14 Open up a series tonight with Kansas City, and I will be on the On-Dex show at 2 o'clock today, or at 6 o'clock today. I was going to say four and a half hours of coverage. We have two hours left to go on today's edition of the Matt Thomas show at Ross. We want you to be a part of the program. If you went to Saturday's Astro game, we'll fill your pain. Tickets, parking, beer, soda,
Starting point is 01:24:42 popcorn, cotton candy, hot dog, how much did you spend? And how many people in your conversation were knowing you about the fact that Hunter Brown should have pitched a day before, day after that? Should have pitched two days in a row.
Starting point is 01:24:54 Two days in a row. We had a caller say that his wife was asking him, why not? If you went to Saturday's game, take us through your night. Because by the time you sat down or were comfortable in your chair in the first half inning, your squad was down to 10-0. You know what they did for you?
Starting point is 01:25:08 They came back and gave you Renel Blanco on, Sunday. It all worked out. A series win is a series win. Yes, he did. Let's get you the news at noon. 1205 of Sports Talks. And let's get to the Randy McAvoy of sports journalism. Wow. What a compliment. Man, we're just dropping Channel 2 all over the place. Yeah. I'm going to get you on one time. As I told Randy last night, I assumed the check is in the mail. God, almighty. Yes, Matt. I'm glad you mentioned Redo Blanco. What a start for him yesterday against the Cincinnati.
Starting point is 01:25:39 I meant to test this earlier. We'll see if it works. I did restart my computer, Jonathan. Let's see if it works. Both two. Go around on a pitch away. Yeah, he did. Says Adam back at first.
Starting point is 01:25:50 Espinall strikes out as Renel Blanco career high. 11 strikeouts over eight shutout innings. Has given up just two hits. And we head now to the bottom of the eight. How about 11 strikeouts career high for Renal Blanco? Sean Dubin doing his thing. So just the way you would have scripted it out, a 6-0 shutout. And Matt is Christian Walker waking up.
Starting point is 01:26:18 A couple of hits for him. Three runs batted in. Yiner Diaz with a three-run shot as well. Both those guys could start producing a middle lineup. That would be huge. Look, they're hanging around. The division is purely average. I feel like we're repeating ourselves.
Starting point is 01:26:31 All they need is a 7 out of 10, and they'll be back in first place. It's crazy. Just somebody in this division do something. and Yankees went and beat the A's badly yesterday. They're gaining ground. The division is purely average. Yeah, just last week I was talking about how good the Mariners have been looking if they could keep it up. Well, they lost three in a row.
Starting point is 01:26:48 Only two games back, your Astros. We mentioned Lance McCullors Jr. getting shelled on this Saturday. Now we have to figure out with Hayden Wisniewski going down with elbow discomfort, what will happen in the rotation with the Astros still wanting to stick with a six-man. Here is Dana Brown with the Astros Radio Network yesterday. talking about candidates for that six spot in the rotation. Yeah, particularly Gordon could be coming, getting the mix. He's been throwing the ball well in AAA.
Starting point is 01:27:18 You know, Gusto, of course, got a chance to be really good. You know, we've liked what we've seen from him earlier on this season. And so, you know, we're looking for him to really step it up, particularly with the two guys being hurt right now. But look, we really feel good about Gusto. and good things we didn't have to use him yesterday or our big boys in the back end. And so we're set up pretty good for today.
Starting point is 01:27:48 Who could be? That sixth spot? Sounds like Colton Gordon. I just love the fact every time I listen to Dana, he makes me feel optimistic. A channel of Rome pointing out over the weekend, Colton Gordon would be on regular rest to pitch for the Astros Wednesday. So I figure that would be your odds on a favorite.
Starting point is 01:28:04 Gusto is supposed to pitch tonight for the Houston Astros on your mound matchup, which you'll have for us later on. about six hours from now, Matt Thomas. Seriously, Mike, they have to claim overtime on this today? Oh, my. All right. Jeez.
Starting point is 01:28:19 Don't dislocate your shoulder, patting yourself on the back. All right, moving along on the news at noon here. When's Waxson-Clanton's next on-deck and tentating show? You know, it's something we didn't mention, Matt. We did mention, I'll get to some of the other stuff we have mentioned later, but we haven't mentioned the opener for the NFL season this year. Yes, please do. It is the Eagles hosting the DHS.
Starting point is 01:28:39 Dallas Cowboys. Wait a minute. The Dallas Cowboys are opening up a season on national television. Stop me. Yeah. What would you say the quote was from Chris Collinsworth was? If they could put the Cowboys on 17 times year, they would do it. Yes, on Sunday night football on NBC.
Starting point is 01:28:52 So it will be on NBC. Thursday night, September 4th, the season opener will be the Eagles and the Cowboys. And we always make fun of the Cowboys always being on. But the ratings are always good. And this is a classic NFL rivalry. It's a great rivalry. The Cowboys draw a fly. I mean, you could put the Cowboys against an.
Starting point is 01:29:09 XFL team and they would draw. Yeah, I don't know how or why. I think it's, I think it's because people who love them and then people who hate them want to hate watch. For a team that by the way is not won a Super Bowl in 30 years, they carry incredible national cachet. Speaking of which, Matt, I've been to hate watching the Golden State Warriors. They take on the Timberwolves at home. T. Wolves minus five and a half in this one with Steph Curry still out. Also in other playoff action, the Celtics and Nicks. That'll be a 630 tip. Celtics, six and a half. half point favors in that one. Is it a must win game for the Celtics down
Starting point is 01:29:43 2-1 in the series? Of course not, Ross. You can't be a must-win until you have three losses. I love you. You're a career. You know what, that's very smart and decisive analysis, Matt. I'm glad you would bring that to the table. I'll learn it from the best. Well, of course, before
Starting point is 01:29:59 tonight's action, 6 o'clock hour time, it will be the NBA lottery. Rockets hold a 3.8% chance to get Cooper Flag and the number Pick, 17.3% chance to get in to the top four. My gut tells me, and this is just because I'm playing the odds, I think the Rockets are going to be right where they are at number nine.
Starting point is 01:30:20 Yeah, I think so. I think so. Which is, by the way, I do have a gut feeling. Please. I've got a top four jump, feeling my gut. Now, let me tell you some, if a top four jump comes into play, it does help when trying to perhaps improve the team of the veteran player, whether to be honest, whether it be Kevin.
Starting point is 01:30:39 Duran or somebody else. Yes. Top four, seems really sexy. By the way, this draft, and we will obviously get into a little bit more when we get closer to the late June day. Yeah, you're breaking down tip now, right?
Starting point is 01:30:49 I'm not doing it right now, no. But we'll have somebody on that does, and they'll probably, from what I understand, this is a significantly better draft this year than it was last year. Last year may have been one of the worst in NBA history. Okay, Matt, one quick off the beaten path story for you. Online sports betting, you know, has taken over the world. Apparently, over $40 million was spent gambling on the identity of who will be the next Pope.
Starting point is 01:31:18 One winner making $52,000 on the long shot, Robert Prevost, who became Pope Leo the 14th. Did you bet on the Pope? No. I was looking for the smoke and I wanted being a brisket sandwich at Buckees. I believe Pietro Powellin was the favorite alongside Luis Antonio Taggle. But, of course, Robert Prevost was chosen. $40 million spent on betting on who the next Pope would be. And Pope Leo averaged four points a game on the 85 national championship team.
Starting point is 01:31:49 That's not true, Matt. He was a back-to-point. No, he graduated in 77. Oh, all right. Real quick, let's turn the music off here. John, then I set you a soundbite. This is from the game yesterday. Eli Deli, Eli, Eli.
Starting point is 01:32:04 Eli Delacros. Got called out on strikes yesterday. CB Buckner was behind the plate. It was a bad call. And CB Buckner's probably pound for pound your war some power, not named Angel Hernandez, and Angels retired. So I have a soundbite here from I believe the Reds TV crew. Now, Gavin Lux is their second baseman.
Starting point is 01:32:23 Apparently, he says something in the background. So if he winds up swearing, we need to hit the delay button because I've not heard it myself. Oh, geez. But Jonathan, go ahead and play this sound bite of this. This is Reds TV with Elie de la Cruz being called on on strikes. 2-2. Hoh, who, who. Call, strike three.
Starting point is 01:32:41 That's a ball. C.B. Buckner on Bulls and strikes. Blanco strikes out beside. 2-2. Okay. So we were safe on that. Yeah. Unpiring folks, it ain't getting any better. That was a horrible call, by the way.
Starting point is 01:33:04 Challenge just means getting to place, like tomorrow. I got a crazy idea. Shut up. 12-14. No one of your crazy ideas. I'm just going to stare at Miss Chahidi What if you could get every call right? Wouldn't that be crazy? Well, I mean, it'd be nice, but that's never going to happen.
Starting point is 01:33:20 So, no. By the way, I put my name on it. We're never getting every pitched ball strike. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. Only a fool speaks in absolutes. Oh, I'm sorry. What is it? Only a Sith speaks in absolutes.
Starting point is 01:33:31 Okay. Ever, ever. Put my name on it. I'm writing down. Good. 713, 21. We'll get the challenge system, though, right away. I think it'll come in the next couple of years.
Starting point is 01:33:41 713-212-5-790. 7-1-1-2-5-7-19. 5-7-19, 1214, and this is Sports Talk 790. 1219 on Sports Talk 790. Quick shout-out to my friends over at Uptown Appliance Repair. They are a fine Sports Talk 790 sponsor. We appreciate them having them as a part of our family, and if you need any of your appliances fixed up

Uptownappliance Repair.com is the website. You can also reach on to them at 281-758-9-9-7-8. Thank you for being a part of the 790 family. Starting point is 01:34:26 and I think your words of wisdom can help me grow my business. And I'd be like, you bet they can. MT at Sports790.com. And in fact, if you want to use Ross and me together, we could do that for you too. Yeah, we will combo them. We'll tag team them. Yes.
Starting point is 01:34:42 will be a one-two punch. So send me an email, mT at Sports790.com, and your business will grow and thrive and people will like you more if you and I are talking about it. Absolutely. We're lovable. We are lovable.
Starting point is 01:34:56 Kissable. Scribable. We're your best friends. M.T. at Sports790.com. All right. 1220 on Sports Talk, 70. What are you laughing over there for? Nothing.
Starting point is 01:35:09 Just the things I didn't say. But you were thinking. All right. So the Astros won two out of three. Yes. That's all you can ask for. I'm telling you, maybe this team just won't give us streaks. They will.
Starting point is 01:35:22 Long losing or long winnings. It will. It's going to take the batting. Now, first of all, things got, Spencer Erigetti's probably going to, well, hopefully, I think June is the earliest we've been talking, talked about for him coming back. A terrible injury for that being gone that long. Just terrible for him to fracture his throwing hand. So hopefully he can be back. And then, of course, he's going to have to build back up and do rehab and all that. So I think, Lance McKeough.
Starting point is 01:35:44 Colors Jr. is a huge if. Obviously. There's no way around that after Saturday. But I still think even if he doesn't turn, work out, Ryan Gusto's been good, you get Erigetti back. And then you just get a little bit of hitting. We're not asking, like yesterday, six runs. Is that too much to ask for? Is that some crazy thing?
Starting point is 01:36:02 Like, you're just asking for not to be under three runs. Brian McTaggart tweeted out the other day. It's like their record, when they score above three runs, it's like well, well, well above 500. All they have to do with this pitching in the way that it's been in the bullpen, which has been nails, is just score some runs. So I do believe they can. And as you mentioned, the Mariners on a three-game losing streak. So that's a good thing that the division still isn't very good.
Starting point is 01:36:28 And then your hope is to just get in the playoffs as around an 85, hopefully close to 90-win team, and then go from there. Now, things can change in the American League. but the standings right now you have in the central you have three teams that have better records than you do you've got in the American League East you have two teams at a better record so it feels like to me not that you can't squeeze a walled card out of this but in years past you've been able to at least have not win the division won the wild card it feels like this is going to be a
Starting point is 01:37:02 one playoff team out of the America League West this year case and reason for that Astros are a game of a 500 they're only two out of first place It's very, how did we get so lucky? Texans, AMC South, so mid of a division. Astros and America League West, so mid of a division. Any sort of streak. And probably my guess is Mariner Radio is doing the exact same thing.
Starting point is 01:37:28 There's no such thing as Athletics Radio. Ranger Radio is doing well. They're not talking about in Sacramento Sports Leader? Nobody's talking about that in Ranger Radio either. What are they talking about in Sacramento Sports Leader today? The Kings. The lottery? Doug Christie being renamed as a coach.
Starting point is 01:37:42 Yeah. What about in a month? Niners training camp. Oh, okay. They're big to Niners Town? Big Niners Town. Okay, I didn't know that. It's nothing close to San Francisco, but it's pretty, it's for a city that doesn't have a team, it's really big.
Starting point is 01:37:58 Kind of like San Antonio and the Cowboys? I never listen to San Antonio Sports Radio, so I can't tell you. They love the Cowboys in San Antonio. Oh, I don't doubt that. But they've had training camps there before in the past. But yeah, they're huge there. But I, no. I've asked people that have worked in Sacramento,
Starting point is 01:38:13 they talk Kings probably nine months that you're comfortably. It's a one sport pro town. I mean, I kind of get it. Deerrin Fox is gone. What are you talking about? Zach Levine. Well, good thing we're here in Houston. Talking about your Astros,
Starting point is 01:38:33 taking two out of three from the Royals. We have nice diversity. We have the Texans NFL schedule come out on Wednesday. I may take Thursday off just so I can break it down multiple times. I'm so excited. about it. I got a key to victory tonight. Pray whenever Bobby Witt
Starting point is 01:38:48 Jr. comes to the plate. They can't get him. They couldn't get him out. Last series they played. Yeah, they have, they have, uh, going to Kansas City hasn't been their friend of the last few years. And I mean, and Bobby Wood's a phenom, obviously. Right. And Kansas City is one of those teams fighting for the American League, uh, Central, aren't they? Let me take a look. Yeah, Kansas City's, they're two and a half out of first place. Detroit's still in first place. The Detroit Tigers. AJ Hinch is Detroit Tigers Rossi have the best record in the American League
Starting point is 01:39:18 and they have the third best record in Major League Baseball. They're 11 games above 500 and they are crushing the Yankees because the Yankees are only 6 over 500. Was that because they're just missing Garrett Cole that much? Is that the reason why? Yeah, for Pete's sakes, it's been tough for them. Aaron Judge is hitting 400
Starting point is 01:39:38 and hit in a home run every other plate appearance and they're still 23 and 17. By the way, did you see over the weekend, the rumor mill is out about another former ass. We're talking about Boston, obviously in Breggman conversation. There is a team that is whispering out there, we will kick the tires on making sure Kyle Tucker's financial dreams come true. Did you see who that team was?
Starting point is 01:40:00 I did not. The Los Angeles Dodgers. Are you serious? I mean, I could make it up, but I'm not. Oh, man. How? What's it going to defer another billion dollars? How are they getting everybody?
Starting point is 01:40:17 If Kyle Tucker won't... They need to be investigated. No, this needs to stop. This is ridiculous. But I'm scurmy little Jeff Passen. I think they're doing it right. Every other team can do exactly what the Dodgers are doing. Shut your bum ass up, pass, and hate you.
Starting point is 01:40:29 Get that damn shmedium coat off. Actually, a grown-ass man. This is terrible. What I do need Kyle Tucker to do is wherever he signs Ross, you need to make sure it's in the net. at the league. I don't want to see him multiple times this season. Well, yeah. Hopefully you can make the world serious.
Starting point is 01:40:51 And the Dodgers can cave your face in with a super team. Who plays right? I don't even know who plays right for the Dodgers right now. That doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, but if they seriously get him, don't even play the season. But I'm little Jeff Passon. I wear women's underwear. And I think that
Starting point is 01:41:14 what? And then I think that the Dodgers are doing it right. And everybody else has taken a lesson from them. Geez, Matt. What? Maybe he doesn't wear a woman's underwear.
Starting point is 01:41:29 I just said maybe. I'm not responding to any. Hi, my name is Ross. I don't have anything to do with anything Matt just said the last 30 seconds. I heard what Ross said about other people earlier today. What? I didn't say anything.
Starting point is 01:41:44 You were talking about Lance McCullors and all that stuff? Throwing me under the bus for no reason whatsoever. You know what? That was, yeah. Andy Pahas has been playing right field for the Dodgers. Use it in 286 with six homers, 8, OPS 800. Okay, still replaceable.
Starting point is 01:42:00 Yeah, for Kyle Tucker. Very much replaceable. All right, 713, 212, 790. We asked a question in the very early portion of the show today. Were they repeating? If you went to Saturday's game and you sat down, were you there at first pitch? And if you did get there late,
Starting point is 01:42:19 when did you sit down and what was the score when you sat down? And how much of that money did you realize when you were eating that hot dog you were never going to get back? And you scratched your nose and they were down 10. I'm trying to think if it's ever happened to me. I've been in the games where they've been down like six or seven. I mean, it was the worst, didn't they say it was the worst first inning since the 80s or something like that? I have been to Texans games. They've been down 14 nothing quickly.
Starting point is 01:42:47 But that's not, you can overcome that. Oh, yeah. If you were there in the David Cullier, that was every week. Yeah, I mean, if you went to a wildcard game at 3.30, you had a kickoff return for touchdown. You were used to that. Right? Wasn't there one? Wasn't we at a bar?
Starting point is 01:43:01 Yeah. I think so. Oh, that was the Saints. Monday night was at the... No, no, this was like a wild card game. I was with my family. We sat and said, they played somebody and the team returned to kickoff for touchdown, I thought. Yeah, I think you're right.
Starting point is 01:43:16 I can't recall when that was. No, you just... I'm not a touchdown. Texans expert. We'll get, call Adam Wexler. Where's Wax? He can tell us to this. You know, these wild car losses kind of get They do pile up. Yeah, they mix up a little bit there for you. 713-212-790.
Starting point is 01:43:30 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Some details of the NFL's international games, opening week games, are slowly trickling out. I don't get in a schedule talk like others, I guess? Oh yeah, breaking down the schedule. Don't people do mock schedules?
Starting point is 01:43:50 Hey, why don't you come my YouTube show and tell me how many national games the Texans are going to get? I have seen people do mock schedules, which to me is the biggest waste of time in the history of sports media. That is absolutely terrible. Why would you mock schedule? I mean, do you have nothing going on in your life? Do you not know what it's like to touch a woman? If you do a mock schedule, you don't have no idea what you have no life. You have no friends.
Starting point is 01:44:11 No one likes you and you're not touching a woman or a man for that matter. Hmm. We're not here to judge. Oh, I am. If you're Mac scheduling, you're a loser. You don't have to say anything. I got nothing. Let me tell you.
Starting point is 01:44:29 I do a lot of things that are making me a loser. I'm just putting myself in a different category of being a loser. You're a different loser. You're a winning loser. Oh, my God. I watch sports and soap operas. That makes me a loser. I fully got to understand this.
Starting point is 01:44:41 But you're a loser. I like music prior to 1980. I mean, that makes me a loser. It just does. I get it. You know what I thought of you? Some song from America came on. But at least I admit it.
Starting point is 01:44:50 That's the thing is. people don't admit it. I'm going to be a sports girl. You're not. Randomly some America song came on and it was kind of a jam and I thought of you. Well, you should have. America's a jam.
Starting point is 01:45:00 I think it was 10 man. Oh, 10 man's a good one. See, I was like, this is a Matt Thomas song, but it's kind of a jam. It wasn't bad.
Starting point is 01:45:06 Matter of fact, we're going to hear some Tim man. We come back. 713, 212-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. We will give you the text and schedule based off of the schedule. Oh, we got to run through it.
Starting point is 01:45:19 Run through it. Yeah. That's a classic. It's a bit for 10 plus years. All right, I got any of a text from a friend of mine, and you can choose not to answer this. This is directly strictly to you. Oh, really?
Starting point is 01:45:33 It says, so Ross is okay. The Dodgers, he's upset the Dodgers by everyone, but he's not upset about NAL big teams buying best players. Explain. What? Yeah. Okay, well, let's, let's, I'm talking about the Dodgers deferring all this money, and that's a loophole.
Starting point is 01:45:53 So they're paying, they're deferring $68 million of Shohayo and Bhani's $70 million salary. So you're upset with a deferment? Yeah, they can spend all their money they want. Okay. I think the loophole with the, and being able to outspend other owners because they're getting other people to agree to deferments. It's helping them out. And yeah, it's unfair anyways. There should be a hard cap in baseball if you ask me, because it's a professional league.
Starting point is 01:46:19 But also, I'm okay with not being, with a staying free market. but in a competitive league you want balance. But I get that argument in college sports. So you, I'm not trying about words in your mouth. I'm not trying to argue here either. Okay. So you don't believe that colleges are a competitive league. No.
Starting point is 01:46:38 Okay. Well, they shouldn't be. But that's what they, I guess that's what they have been. But also, yeah, I'm not mad at Joey Otani for signing all that money. I just think this loophole deferment stuff where they have Mookie bets deferring money, Otani's deferring money, who else, a bunch of other people, people, they've got almost a billion dollars deferred. And because what happens is if that $70 million that Choha Tani was getting deferred
Starting point is 01:47:00 stayed on the books as a full salary towards the luxury tax threshold, I would have no issue with it. The problem is when he defers all that money, they get a discount. I don't remember how much the discount is. It's not full. But if you're skirting the system, it's a loophole that they need to close, in my opinion. to where they get to pay everybody just because they defer money.
Starting point is 01:47:23 I think deferment is absolutely criminal in that if you're going to sign somebody and you're willing to pay the tax threshold because of that, then pay it. Then just say, all right, we're going to go well over the cap or whatever our competitive balance is and we'll pay the fine for it. And we're willing to
Starting point is 01:47:38 take on that penalty because we think overspending is still going to help us win a championship. So that's what I would do. I don't begrudge the Yankees in New York of the Mets out overspending, but punish them by doing them, making sure there's a tax that goes towards other teams to get them hopefully closer to what those other teams are spending. But yeah, the deferment is just a, it's a layaway process, and I just think it's loud.
Starting point is 01:48:02 Yeah, and it's a different animal than a professional league where everybody has the same TV contract, everybody gets that. It's like one league that all the owners vote and get together, and they collectively bargain with the players and all that type of stuff. That's why I like a hard cap league, and it would be totally different with a college. You can't expect Kansas Jayhawks football to invest in spend and bring the same amount of stuff to the table that Texas football or Georgia or whoever would. Now, I know, and you know I've discussed this for many years on this. It's the same 10 teams every year, essentially.
Starting point is 01:48:31 Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Notre Dame. And your evidence is well on your side for that. But I don't mind once in a while Kansas football running the table. I don't mind if UNLV was to make a lot. a magical year or Boise State or Boise State was in the playoffs. They were top three seed. They had a shot. But I think this, the NIL lack of regulation
Starting point is 01:48:58 is never going to give us one of those once in a while. I think it definitely to me makes it harder because and I'm not trying to be carry the flag for the small teams like Monroe is not going to do anything. Your Arkansas states,
Starting point is 01:49:14 your Colorado state. You're not going to know about it. You're less likely. I'm less likely. I'm less likely to watch a big game if it's Louis, like you said, Louisiana Monroe or Boise State or whatever. What's going to get more ratings and revenue and interest? It's going to be Ohio State versus Georgia over, you know, Arizona
Starting point is 01:49:30 State versus Boise State. That's just the fact of the matter. But Arizona State was in the playoff. They had a shot. They should have won that game against Texas. They choked it. And Boise State was in the playoffs as well. So they're getting in the game. But I do think the thing that makes it harder now is
Starting point is 01:49:46 the transfer portal, for sure. to where if you're a really good player on Arizona State or a smaller school and you have a good season, you're hitting the portal. And you're trying to go to Georgia. You're trying to go to like Texas last year. It's a manged rush from UTSA. Let me give you an end of simplistic form. We've got to get to ponder here in a second.
Starting point is 01:50:05 I am a football coach that took a chance on a kid that was not getting recruited by high-end schools. Yes. I am a coach at say, let's throw a small division. state. And I saw this wide receiver who may have had some issues in high school. The grades weren't great. Attitude wasn't spectacular. Maybe he had a little petty theft in his life.
Starting point is 01:50:29 But I said, you know what? I'm going to take a chance on this kid. Because I think he's going to have me win some football games and I think he's going to, I can put him under my program. And he goes there and he kicks butt. He catches 15 touchdowns, has a thousand yards of receiving. I should be rewarded by that. I took a chance
Starting point is 01:50:44 in a kid. What is that kid going to do nine times out of ten? He's going to enter the portal and somewhere else bigger. And that in itself is a fundamental problem I have with it. That doesn't do with that now. That's just transferable. But you are if you're a good coach who's finding all these good players and these diamonds in the rough, you're probably going to have, you're going to be successful. And then you're going to, you're going to go from UTSA to Texas to LSU to Oklahoma, whatever. So you have a chance to move up too. So basically we have to understand is this. If you're a ball state or you're
Starting point is 01:51:13 anybody in the Mac or the Mountain West or any, uh, what else is there? You've got no shot, just like the before system. You've got no shot. You have a tough time keeping coaches and a tough time keeping players. Who's the last mid-major to win a college football playoff or BCS or championship? Boy's your debut Oklahoma many years ago. Yeah, it wasn't for a championship. No.
Starting point is 01:51:37 I have a crazy crackpot idea for you. In European soccer, if I have a, they have their academies where they get players in when they're like seven, eight years old. And they cultivate this talent. and they put them on their team and whatever. Say I'm the smaller team and I found this diamond in the rough. And it turns out they're a world-class player. If you want him, you have to pay me. You have to pay a transfer fee.
Starting point is 01:52:00 That goes into my pocket that I can reinvest into player development and stuff like that. What if a player went from UTSA to Texas and Texas had to pay a little bit of money? Some of that NIL money had to go to the UTSA and some kind of fund where it was going to Yeah, I know. That's what I said. It's a crackpot idea. Nick Saban and President Trump. What do you think about that as an idea, though, to where the smaller school that is losing the player that developed them, like you said, you took a chance, you developed them, they hold their skills.
Starting point is 01:52:25 And the European soccer, well, not even, soccer everywhere, where you have to pay, if you want that player, you, they have to pay their salary and they have to pay their agent fees. And they have to pay them. You have a little bit of that right now. Guess what you have, buyouts. Yeah. If somebody wants to come by a player out. What about an NIL buyout? Excuse me.
Starting point is 01:52:44 Yeah. A coach out. You got to buy out the contract. and that money goes to the school. Again, there's no way to enforce this. This is kind of fantasy land, but I think, I absolutely think that the small school who discovered and took a chance on that player
Starting point is 01:52:54 should get something somehow. Ponder in Baytown wants to talk about, what was you going to talk about? Oh, he went to the Astros game on Saturday. How did your experience go? I think we know the answer. We'll get to you in a minute. 713212-5-790.
Starting point is 01:53:10 7-13-212-5-790. If you want to follow me on Instagram, Ross got three new people. on Instagram today. Hey, don't be mad. At Sports RV. At Sports RV. At SportsMT. Influencer initiatives, please help me out.
Starting point is 01:53:24 Matt's already got like 2000. I've only had 600. At SportsMT, Instagram. It's a wonderful account. Look, if you just want pictures of like volleyball stuff, that's fine. No. I need seven new Instagram followers. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:53:37 Just seven. Just seven. Seven people listening to me right now. If I don't get seven new Instagram followers, I'll know that we've got less than seven people listening. it'll hurt my feelings a little bit. At SportsMT on Instagram. 1243 on 7-H.
Starting point is 01:53:52 I just want to say I love you. Thank you for following me on Instagram at SportsMT. I won't let you down. He'll probably let you down. I followed all of you back. Matt probably didn't.
Starting point is 01:54:06 Damn, you call me out like that. So I'm more of a man of the people. You know what? Follow Sports RV. You know what I'll do? I'll follow you back. Up until 1 o'clock. All right.
Starting point is 01:54:17 I'm going to tell you right now. If you just follow me on Instagram, I'm following you right back. Give me a little bit of time. I promise I'll do it. In the next 24 hours. I already did it. It's done. I'm trying to do a major hour.
Starting point is 01:54:26 Two and a half. Follow button takes five seconds. No, I'll do it at the Astros game. The Astros game. I got to sit there for hours anyway. Is you filtering out? No. At SportsMT on IG.
Starting point is 01:54:37 Let's go. And I'll follow you back. Oh my God. You're great. I just, I've, uh, look at this count. Man. I'm about to hit the $2,600 here. pretty soon.
Starting point is 01:54:50 I liked it. I'm really pissed. We were talking about during the break. Is Instagram becoming the new Twitter? Problem is Twitter is information for the most part. It's rapid information and sports news. Definitely. But I would say, yeah, if I just had to guess, there's way more people on Instagram.
Starting point is 01:55:07 Yeah. All right, a couple quick, one quick thing, report today out of NBA Central, not NBA Centelle. That's the fake account. NBA Central's. Don't go to, don't fall for that. I block that account because I don't want to get caught. that Janice is perhaps interested in a team that plays in a state
Starting point is 01:55:23 with no state income tax. Look, I'm putting us on our story, Matt, on Instagram. Let's go. God, I'm handsome. I've got to block some of this out. By the way, nice job by you getting that beard all trimmed up. Thank you. All took us of you getting on TV.
Starting point is 01:55:36 Yeah. Well, it wasn't my idea. Oh, somebody told you to get it. Did mom tell you to? Mom paid for it. She got me a straight razor. Appreciate you, Mama. What?
Starting point is 01:55:46 Your mom is the second-greatest mom. No, she's the greatest. No, mine's greatest. Numero uno. No, mine's the greatest. That's not even close. You know, I'm going to spend all Astros game at Minutemay Park going on people's Facebook posting, your mom's kind of cool and everything, but my mom's better, but I stick
Starting point is 01:56:01 a tongue up. That'd be weird. I'm saying, my mom's the best. That's not true. Here, I'm putting this on my Instagram story now at SportsRefi. I wouldn't do that. Ponder. Thanks for waiting, ponder.
Starting point is 01:56:12 What have you been pondering? Oh, man. I never heard that one before. That was a whole, that may tell you. That was the worst dad joke I've given in quite some time. And for that, Ponder, I do apologize. Hey, it's okay. I got four daughters.
Starting point is 01:56:24 I'm the king of bad dad jokes. Thank you. Got you. Hey, y'all had a couple of other topics, too, I wanted to jump in on. And I will tell you, before I get to the Astros game, is, you know, I have a daughter that she is a sophomore. She'll be a sophomore this next year. And we're already getting letters and stuff and talk to by some of the smaller colleges.
Starting point is 01:56:46 and y'all mentioned a school in your examples with UTSA, which is a target school, that in Sam Houston is a target school for us. And long story short, you know, that's kind of where we're at. And because I do head coach two high-end select softball organizations in the Houston area. And we focus on the 16-18 new girls because recruitment's right around the quarter. And we play a lot of showcase things, and a lot of these colleges are there. And so you do a lot of talking with these college. coaches on how all of this truly works for a sport that's not nearly as high
Starting point is 01:57:21 scale as football. But it's the money that these kids stand to make. And Ross, I love your point on the tax of or doing some kind of transferal reward to these players that find these kids and their small schools, like a Sam Houston, like a UTSA. I won't say the word praying, but they're trying to get these kids to honor their commitment early and they do get good players because of it but it now it's impossible form to keep them and as a dad of a player who who may have that potential for d1 i tell her i say you you know there there is no level of commitment it's it's all about money you know and that's
Starting point is 01:58:02 hard for me because i i'm all about team commitment and i grew up with the bad geo biggio and bagwell era and all that stuff and long story short i just at the end of the day you got to go where the money takes you because you might there is nothing else for you And for these football players, there may not be a professional career for them. So I understand, but they should have something to stop all this transferring, or we're just going to be watching the same big dogs play with all the best players all across. But yes, sir. But that's been the problem, Ms. Ponter, we've been watching the same big dogs for 30 years.
Starting point is 01:58:36 I mean, even though you've got some smaller schools, and we'll just use football as an example. Boise State's been relevant lately. You've had Northern Illinois one year. You had Utah before they joined the Big 12 and the Pac-12. But generally speaking, the big dogs are the ones that are around every year. They're the big dogs that are filling up stadiums or the big dogs that fill up the television contracts. And ESPN and ABC and NBC aren't paying significantly large amounts of money to watch Nevada Wolfpack football. They're doing it because they want to grab Notre Dame and Georgia and LSU and Alabama.
Starting point is 01:59:07 That's how it goes. I agree. But where I disagree with you on, of course, you've got that Notre Dame lifelong contracts with all the, with all the incentives that come with it. But here's where destination, I believe, will end up taking a front seat to this, where University of Miami may, and I know Cam Ward's in there this year and all that stuff, but they're going to be relevant again, I mean, relevant to the point back in the 90s when they were powerhouses. I think Cal, UCLA, schools like that that have been on the back burner,
Starting point is 01:59:38 I think they will be able to pay these players. and let's take like an Iowa Hawkeye or a Penn State. All right. What kid wants to go to Penn State when they go to University of Miami or go to California? So I know as early as all this is, and I could be dead wrong on this, but I truly believe we will see a change in the quality teams.
Starting point is 02:00:00 We may still see all those teams up there competing, but I do think we'll have additional teams. Is it ever going to be University of Louisiana Monroe? No, it's not. Is it going to be Team Houston? going to be UTSA? No, it's not. But I think those schools can get rewarded and give kids the opportunity to be better, to be better paid and be better sports or be better athletes, so they're going to train
Starting point is 02:00:23 harder, they're going to try to make that money, they're going to do it on an earlier age. But that's my opinion on that is where we will see more teams be more competitive within that top tier of players just because, or top tier of schools, just because players are going to want to go to some of these destinations. And you're going to stop seeing Arizona states, and you're going to, you know, as the schools that kind of snuck their way in there and kind of were sleepers and things like that, that's going to all go away. And you're going to have coastal teams, whether it's west, east, southeast, whatever, those destination schools,
Starting point is 02:00:54 I believe, will become relevant because who doesn't want to go there versus an Iowa or a Penn State or something like that? Yeah. Go ahead. Go ahead. Yeah, they have limited. I mean, they only have a certain amount of scholarships they can give out. And I'll give you an example. Now, Oregon is on the coast, but there's not a whole lot of cachet in Oregon, but Phil
Starting point is 02:01:11 Night is forking off a bunch of money and Oregon is getting built up. This guy over at Texas Tech, you mentioned, Matt, now I haven't seen any dividends paid for that, but that's the thing is too, is this, this NIL thing, we said before you had no shot. Now, I mean, you have a shot. You just got to cut the check. You just got to put the money up there. And Phil Knight did that. Oregon hasn't been a national powerhouse until Phil Knight got involved with the program,
Starting point is 02:01:33 and now it's just accepted that there are going to be a college football playoff contender as in getting in to the top 12 every single year because of what he's done. his contributions. Well, and in your conference, and your conference will matter too. And I think one of the biggest killers for college sports, more than this NIO and transfer portal and all these things, and then taking away some of the penalties for the transfer,
Starting point is 02:01:56 because I believe they used to have a, you had to sit out a year after you transfer, correct? Yes. You're right. And so they've taken some of that stuff out. And now, what are they called it the power four now instead of the power five? Right. They're completely degrading these conferences.
Starting point is 02:02:11 conferences that what made college football so exciting. And I think the base thing, why people hate this so much, and I agree with it. It is what it is, and there's nothing you can do about it, so you can either go along or get out of the way. But it is one of those things where I love the competition. These kids are trying, you know, they're getting a free education. That's how they're getting paid. They are trying to make a name for themselves to go get paid. And it's why college football forever until fantasy football, you know, I mean, I know the NFL has, been huge, but I can tell you, as much as I love watching football, give me a good college matchup over a professional matchup all day long. And that's just me. Yeah, Pondon, I got a roll on that.
Starting point is 02:02:51 Thank you. Unfortunately, you're probably in the mind, not probably, you are in the minority. NFL football. A Randow Jacksonville Cincinnati game is going to outdraw even a top 10 college football. There are a lot of people who that feel more of the pageantry and all of college football. Yeah, pageantry of colleges is unsurpassed. I will also say this. They try to institute a rule where you only get one free pass in the transfer portal, then they're second. transfer you do have to sit out i want to time time in it's because of covid why it's not a thing anymore yeah uh oh not uh is that when it started then the not sitting out of year i joined college right when it in 2020 it's because of the covid why they took the ban out for different conferences but also they
Starting point is 02:03:27 they also have to treat you like students if i'm if i'm a if i'm a student and i'm going to uh you know hcc and my grades are really good and i get into rice i don't have to sit out a year right right right if i'm if going to some other college and you want to transfer i mean so i kind of get I understand why people don't want that and they want a sit-out year so that people can't just free transfer every single year. But if we're selling that they're student athletes and a student can transfer schools every year without sitting out, I get that argument too. In theory, if you're in biology manager, you want to go to four different schools. You can go to four different schools. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:04:01 Matt Thomas want to come home from you, North Texas. You didn't have to sit out of year. No, I didn't. I went back to the Harvard of Southeast Texas. There you go. Look how it turned out. Are you going to do that I transfer? What?
Starting point is 02:04:12 Are you going to let your daughter transfer? You talk too fast. Yeah, you're too fast. Yeah, I can't understand what you said. Are you going to let your daughter transfer? I'm sorry. Oh, you'll let your daughter transfer. Whoa, man, you're on hyper speed right there, Jonathan?
Starting point is 02:04:23 It was a quick question. She didn't even, she didn't even, she made our way to Rhode Island yet. What am I? I just wanted to ask you. You're very opinion. I just want to know if she's like, that's up, that's up to her. I mean, I'm not. I'm not.
Starting point is 02:04:33 I can consult. I'm not against transferring. I mean, if she misses home or there's a coaching change or something like that, you know, I can't control what she's. feels. But she right now, it's funny you bring that up and I've got 10 seconds here. She is like, Dad, I'm not transferring. NBA draft lottery tonight.
Starting point is 02:04:51 Astros open up a series with the hated Kansas City Royals. There are 14 members of the NBA media that are in the lottery drawing room. Why, I need to be there. They're all newspaper guys. Somebody likes these people anyway. What do you want to be there for? You're going to fall asleep. There's nothing to see. I kind of want to be there for that. I mean, I'm
Starting point is 02:05:11 behind the scene stuff. Okay. Oh, well. You're busy. You're on Astros on deck. I am putting in a, I mean, my day started. I left the house at 8.30. I won't be done until about 10.30 tonight.
Starting point is 02:05:23 Damn. I'm the model of consistency around these parts. Man, you're great, Matt. And you know, you're so humble about it, too. You never pat yourself on the back. I believe it's correct. I believe it's correct. I call you Mr. Modesty is what we call you.
Starting point is 02:05:36 Meanwhile, Clinton, they'll do their four-hour show and they'll go home and say very tired, very busy. and happy Mother's Day to all the number one mothers out there. Yes, which mine's number one and the rest of you all are fighting for second. You're right? No, not really.
Starting point is 02:05:56 Seriously, I'm so happy. That is, what a great take of mine. All I did was spend, yes. Those of you don't know, 10 o'clock this morning we opened the show with, but we went on, we've been on the air for three hours. Damn, it's just flying by here, Rossi. We were talking about how everybody on Facebook said,
Starting point is 02:06:11 I have the best mother everywhere. My wife's the best mother. I mean, they're probably pretty good. But you're wrong. No, my mom's literally the best mom. No, my mom's the best mom. No, mine's literally the best mom. So what I'm going to do is while at the Astros game today,
Starting point is 02:06:29 I'm going to go on everybody's Facebook and say, this is not entirely a true statement. Your mom may be an operational mom. You're going to attack people and their mothers on Facebook all night. I mean, it feels like at least an hour with work. Is that how you want to spend your time? Like, for instance, let me just run to Facebook. but really quick and I'll go back to sports here.
Starting point is 02:06:46 Oh, my God. This is from yesterday. Let's see here. Picture you all over the... Why are you showing up there? Oh, love it. At Sports RV. See, this...
Starting point is 02:06:57 I should have this... Oh, here we go. Talk for a second, Ross. There we go. Yeah, follow me at Sports RV. On Instagram. You know what? I said I was following back everyone to 1 o'clock.
Starting point is 02:07:08 I extended it to 1.15. I'm just trying to get my numbers up. By the way, I just followed a bunch of people, too. So hope it worked out for me. Thank you. Y'all'll be, I'll be weird or anything. Yeah, I mean, you can unfollow or mute them.
Starting point is 02:07:18 It's fine. I'm not going to do that. Once I stay, I don't unfollow, unless you put something derogatory, or you follow people I don't like. So if somebody follows somebody you don't like, you're going to unfollow them? Correct.
Starting point is 02:07:31 That makes sense. Yeah, this is a bunch of, it does it. Just let me be my love, my life. It's okay. I know. You're one of a kind, Matt. I am.
Starting point is 02:07:41 We love you for who you are. And I would never ask you to change. My hair on your head. Thank you very much. No, it's too late. I got to tell the non-mother's day stuff in there. Just for next year we need a Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to my great mother and my great wife.
Starting point is 02:07:56 Why can't you call her number one? What if you think she's the best? You think your mother's the best? I think my mother's the best. Why can't I say she's the best? Why are you so hung up on this? I will go to your Twitter. I will go to your Facebook account and say that you're wrong.
Starting point is 02:08:06 But you'll be wrong. You don't know that. Yes, I do. All right. Hey, somebody on Twitter a few minutes ago, speaking of Twitter, said that if you want to watch an NFL game this year, Here's where you're going to watch them on. ABC, of course.
Starting point is 02:08:22 CBS, NBC, ESPN. Fox. I already mentioned Fox, right? Oh, no, Fox. ESPN Plus, YouTube, Google, Amazon Prime, Netflix. That's nine networks. Everybody wants a piece of the NFL pie. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:08:45 That is impressive. wasn't there something they had like 50 million viewers on Netflix for the Texans Ravens game and it was that was a complete blowout both of them were lousy right yeah it was what Baltimore Pittsburgh no it was Pittsburgh uh Kansas City I think everybody's just trying to get their parlays you know I think I think gambling and and fantasy football helps NFL ratings in a huge way too plus on Sundays I mean I love the NBA you love the NBA most people just it's fine need their football fix this second round has been great
Starting point is 02:09:18 I've enjoyed the second round most of the first round has been great too NBA playoffs have been spectacular I know like you said Houston's not tuning in nope that's fine we'll move on but I will say this speaking of tuning in so we mentioned last week about NBC is going to get the NBA back
Starting point is 02:09:34 and they got John Tesh involved he's going to I don't know if he's going to update round ball rocked the song but he's giving his blessing to it and they've hired a bunch of different people to do analysis they have hired a special contributor. This is unbelievable, frankly.
Starting point is 02:09:54 And that means whether he's on four or five times, six times, weekly, once a year, whatever. I want you to try to guess. Did you see it yet? No. Who is this person? Okay, you're going to guess. A former NBA player. As a guest on.
Starting point is 02:10:09 It's called a special contributor on the NBC version of the NBA games. And I'll even give you three guesses. Nicholas Shida Vili. I'm going to try to give you this again. Try this again. Three guesses. Michael Jordan. That's correct.
Starting point is 02:10:25 See, because you, I just guessed that because you sounded, it sounds crazy that he would be involved. Mm-hmm. He's never done anything in television since he left. Is he okay? He's any cash? He's sold every. He's any multi-billionaire? What's he spending his time doing this for?
Starting point is 02:10:40 When we find out how much he's going to get paid for, which we will, I'm sure. We will be dumbfounded by it. You're probably right. And do you think, like, for example, that last dance documentary came out after LeBron won his championship and he was like, y'all must have forgot. Let me remind you all of something. And let me remind you who I am and I'm still the goat. Right.
Starting point is 02:11:05 Do you think there's a little bit of that too? I think it's a combination of, hey, all this, all this LeBron stuff, I can tell you who the greatest is. It's me. Because, right. I believe NBC is giving him a lot of money. putting a lot of money into this product. They think the NBA is where it's at and they're putting a lot of money behind it. And third, my guess is it's probably not a huge commitment. It's probably four to five times a year. It'll be interesting. It is, I'll tell you one unintended benefit and I
Starting point is 02:11:34 know that 99% of my audience won't care. I bet we get the schedule out a lot earlier because I know that NBC's going to want to spend the fall promoting their NBA coverage on their football stuff. And when you put the schedule out in late August, it doesn't give you a whole lot of time to do that. So that I think it's a positive for me because I like to kind of know what my life's going to be like for the next nine months. You do too to a certain extent.
Starting point is 02:11:55 So the NBA has always been very late with releasing the schedule. I think it's going to be a lot of tune. That's just a guess of mine. Got feeling. Yeah. Yeah. So Michael Jordan's going to join NBC Sports.
Starting point is 02:12:07 You got Charles Barkley staying with inside the NBA, even though it's going to be on ESPN. And Charles Barkley has been going on every show he possibly can to crush TNT and crushing SBN. He's like, if you want to fire me, fire me.
Starting point is 02:12:21 I don't care. I'll do my, I'll commit, I'll do my commitment, but I'm not gonna, I don't want to, he basically annihilates Kendrick Perkins whenever he can. Yeah. He doesn't respect Stuart Scott. Not Sir Scott, Stephen A. Smith. Stephen A. Smith, yeah.
Starting point is 02:12:37 He's like, I'm not going on every week. I'm not going on every one of the shows. Because what the ESPN does, they pay their people a lot, but they also put them on every show. So it's too much of every show. everybody. I mean, as great as this show is, what you want to be on, it's 730, 930, 1 o'clock, 2.30, 445, 6 o'clock, 930.
Starting point is 02:12:56 It'd be too much for Ross and Ross and Matt. How much is Stephen A make? That's true. I like the challenge of that. I'll go on ESPN 10 times today. Yeah, I'll give it a shot. I'll give him a shot for 30 minutes a year. That's right.
Starting point is 02:13:10 713-212-5-790. 7-1-2-1-2-7-9-9. Zero. Are the Astro bats, based off of Ross, this weekend? Starting to turn the corner. The production against the Natty. Not fully woken up, but they kind of open up an eye. They're a little groggy. Are their eyes still dilated? Are they hitting snooze? Or are they getting up?
Starting point is 02:13:36 Hmm. What's waiting from them when they get up? A cup of coffee? Victories? American League West Championship. Fresh squeeze orange juice. Mmm, bacon. Morning Whoopi. I knew you're going to go there, but I'm just going to step right over that.
Starting point is 02:13:53 Waffles or pancakes? Or French toast. Ooh. In order, real quick. French toast, waffles, pancakes. And pancakes are a distant third. I'm going pancakes, waffles, French toast. I got you flipped.
Starting point is 02:14:06 You like pancakes over the other two? It's sentimental, I think. For me, my mom used to make pancakes when I was a kid. I love pancakes. So you're going sentimental on the cake? Yeah, it's delicious. I like what. By the way, I love waffles and French toast.
Starting point is 02:14:19 Don't get me wrong. It's like the Mount Rushmore. Like three goats. Give me Texas toast made French toast for the win. What about some halibred? Hollabred too. Stale sourdough works as well, beautifully. Breakfast talk will continue after we talk about the Astros 2.
Starting point is 02:14:38 713-212-5-790. 120 on Sports Talk 790. Astros' start a week series, I should say, three games with the Kansas City Royals tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday. And then they have a weekend series against the Texas Rangers. I've not, you know what, have we done ourselves a disservice by not going up to Arlington just yet? That series starts, by the way, on Thursday. It's a four game series, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Arlington.
Starting point is 02:15:12 The press box is like you're like a hundred thousand feet in the air. Yeah, it's really, really, it's the highest point of the stadium. You can't, when a pop-up happens, you don't know where it's going. Because you've got no depth perception. It's like, you've got no, the perspective is not correct. But Ross, we're not entitled media. Oh, I'm in, no, I'm entitled media. Yeah, I'm on a good spot.
Starting point is 02:15:32 I'm just kidding. I'd look. We can sit with the people. Yeah, it's probably half empty. Well, and I'm with the, right. And I'm with the Astros in town. No, I would like, uh, I would probably say a suite would be fine for us. Ashros are coming into Arlington to, to boost the economy.
Starting point is 02:15:45 Oh, yeah. Shout out to those of you that go to get up. Because if it was just the A's in town, there wouldn't be anybody there. But everybody wants to go and root against the Astros, and Astros friends are going to go up there and give millions of dollars to the Arlington economy. You're welcome, whatever county y'all are in. What is Arlington County? Is that, are they part of Tarrant County?
Starting point is 02:16:03 I know that's Fort Worth. No idea. Okay. Oh, what this guy? We call you county master. That's what we call you. That's what they do? County Commissioner Matt, Territ County.
Starting point is 02:16:13 I like it. It's correct. Okay. Yeah, I don't mind Arlington. I mean, look, I can get the... No, it sucks. I can get a pawn shop. I can get a strip club.
Starting point is 02:16:24 Seriously. I get a variety of Sam's and Walmarts and the other places like that. I mean, it's fine. Hotels are reasonable. I mean, Six Flags is still there. Yeah. If you want to go see some rusted out roller coasters and nasty Six Flags. I'm down with roller coasters.
Starting point is 02:16:45 by the way. I told you that about five years ago. You got, because didn't, at that place in whatever gardens or whatever? No, it was in Cleveland. Yeah, what is that place called? Cedar. Cedar Point, maybe?
Starting point is 02:16:56 Cedar something or other. Yeah. Didn't somebody die or get hurt? Somebody got hurt. Somebody got a piece of it got hit her in the head. We were just there like three weeks beforehand. Yeah, I'm out. I'm with you.
Starting point is 02:17:07 Way out. All right, so do the Astros. They did, the, the offense, I mean, even though they lost the game over the weekend. The Astros offense did show up. I mean, it wasn't, you know, I got there late, especially after falling behind 10. I think of Saturday. Well, hey, it wasn't late. They didn't even get
Starting point is 02:17:25 a shot. They were down 10, 0 before they even came to bat. That's true. But think about it. Friday, they win, they score 3, which wasn't great, but again, you shut out the Reds. How about the Reds series? Zero, 13, and zero. That's
Starting point is 02:17:43 baseball in a nutshell. That's why if you ever have a team, get no hit, on one day, bet them to win the next. It seems like, oh, the Astros scored double digits, and then, well, they have, I think they've still only done that once this year. But when they scored double digits in the years past, it was, yeah, that, we used to joke, save these for the tomorrow, we literally meant that. We entered the weekend within 20th and team OPS.
Starting point is 02:18:10 Now they're 14th. Bats are waking up. They're waking up, baby, let's go. And then now, of course, Lance McCullors is getting shell. and Hayden was necessary he has elbow discomfort. So it's crazy how the pendulum can sometimes swing between
Starting point is 02:18:26 you pitch and you can't hit you hit and you can't pitch. I got to be honest with you when the Astros tell me something's discomforting that automatically means it's long term for me and that's not always the case
Starting point is 02:18:39 because there was discomfort in Jose's hamstring over the weekend and they're not necessarily saying it's a long-term thing and a matter of fact you'd be back probably by maybe sometime this series or maybe even the Ranger series. They said 24 to 48 hours.
Starting point is 02:18:52 I'm concerned with a soft tissue injury with somebody like Jose O2 of him with how hard he plays. Right. Trying to cover territory in left field. And how much he always wants to be out there. I am concerned with re-injury. But we'll see. He's 30. What is he?
Starting point is 02:19:11 35. First soft tissue injury, I think. 35-year-olds with hammy issues? That sounds like that could be something. That's something we're going to watch a lot. He's coming back in 72 hours? That seems pretty wild to me. But hopefully it's just mild.
Starting point is 02:19:23 We're going to trust them. The Wisnowski thing to me is a bigger concern because two starts ago there was a velocity drop. He skips a start and then has to get to four innings and really tries hard. And then they're shutting him down for a few days to let it not cool off, but what's the term they were using yesterday? Calm down is what they're saying. Calm down. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 02:19:47 Calm down each town. You know how inflammation can calm down. Yeah. Doesn't sound good. Bank others debt. Some. I mean, not names you necessarily would recognize. We'll see how Colton Gordon looks on Wednesday. In likely, nothing's been announced. Yeah. And again, you need a sick start at least for the next week and a half.
Starting point is 02:20:12 Astros, I'm going to look at real quick. The Astros next home day, excuse me, next off day is, stay with me on this. don't leave me. Let's see they play Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Their next off day is not until May 20th. Memorial Day. Why aren't they playing a Memorial Day? That's stupid.
Starting point is 02:20:33 Wait, they're off on Memorial Day? Off. O-F. That's good, Matt. You get the first Memorial Day off in like 10 years. I will say this, not to brag on myself, but I will brag. I have worked a lot of Memorial Days in July 4th because I know you guys pick up a load of the stuff during this, especially before, during the rocket season. Case and point, I told you I've worked.
Starting point is 02:20:50 working this Saturday, and I will be working this Saturday's Astros game. Man, you're the best. Will you be at the outdoor theater listening to some light jazz? I'll be working Astros baseball. I will be, actually, I think listening to some blues. It's my dad's birthday coming up, so we'll be going out on Saturday. Shout out to Pops, birthday tomorrow.
Starting point is 02:21:06 Tell him we say, happy birthday. I didn't understand a word you said. Tell him, he said happy birthday. You talk very fast, Jonathan. John, I swear to that. I promise, Rodham about this to me. You're so excited about talking. I'm talking out of that. Yeah, you're doing it.
Starting point is 02:21:20 It's okay. First of all, all three of us talk fast. You really are going to get a break-and-neck speed over there. It's impressive. You talk like you run. You know, they do fast-talking competitions. Yeah. Where people do reading.
Starting point is 02:21:32 Yeah. Auctions. They should do that. Yeah. I mean, you should be an auctioneer. Wait a second. Hold on. I want to try it real quick.
Starting point is 02:21:40 Let me see if I can do some auctioning. Listen and see if I'm any good at this. Three, two, one. Mm-hmm. Three, three, 43, 43. A dollar 43 and a high. Now, $34.44.
Starting point is 02:21:54 $144.44. $144.34. $3.5. $4.44. A dollar $43 and a high. Now, $44. Seld him, $143.5. $143 and a half.
Starting point is 02:22:02 Put them on number 109 on $1.19 on order 16. Wow. You think I did well? Matt, that was incredible. Did you all like that? Oh, my gosh. That was good. That was good.
Starting point is 02:22:13 You should be a professional. By the way, I got to tell you something. And you have inspired me to do this. I kicked the tie. on doing some ring announcing for some UFC. Yes? And they're like, we don't need you. Oh.
Starting point is 02:22:28 All right, we'll save that for Wednesday. We'll tell them to shut their bumasses up. No, no, no, no, no, no. We're doing the opposite on Wednesday. Oh, that's right. What do we do we call? We have to workshop the name. I had a color of brainstorm and he said,
Starting point is 02:22:42 talkio-ish. Oh, okay. Talk your. That's only, that's only, talk-your talk. Somebody else suggests, let me find it. What is the opposite of shut your bob ass up? Meaning we want to hear more from you. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 02:22:58 Oh, you just call it, tell us more. Okay. Oh, we had somebody on Twitter say, say it from your chest Wednesday. Hmm. I'd like to see Taylor tell me from her chest. Oh, right? Is that you going straight there?
Starting point is 02:23:16 Am I lying? If Taylor told you from her chest, would you argue with it? I don't know how I host with a 15-year-old hormonal boy and an 80-year-old man at the same time with your music tastes and other tastes. It's incredible, actually. One of a kind.
Starting point is 02:23:39 You know what? Follow SportsMT on Instagram. At SportsMT. I just say things that people think. I wasn't thinking about Taylor's chest at that moment. There are others that were. All right. I got a bunch of new people.
Starting point is 02:24:02 Dang. By way, some people are, I have to be requested to follow them. I just requested y'all. You better follow me. Let's go. I mean, accept my request. You don't have to. I'm at 2576 now.
Starting point is 02:24:16 That's great. I'm looking at my Instagram. It's nothing about me with a bunch of rocket photos. If you like rockets, that's fine. There's me talking to Joe a spot in spring training. Looks like I'm the true journalist that I am. Just saying. All right. I was talking with a chest and Taylor and I'm lost track of the show.
Starting point is 02:24:36 That's okay. It's time for a break. What are we're doing next? You're going to break down lottery odds for every team. Let's get to this. Let's get to Janus, because that is worthy of a conversation. Janus is contemplating a life without Milwaukee. We'll discuss that coming up.
Starting point is 02:24:52 Oh, you're writing eyes or something. Something going down? I'll just give you the tweet that I didn't listen to the audio, but just what I read. It's Kay Adams on with Shams. They have a very flirtatious relationship. Is Kaye? Janice? Kay Adams?
Starting point is 02:25:06 Yeah, yes. Is the Pope Catholic? Okay. Dionis to the Lakers. Okay. We'll get into this in a minute. 1.30 on Sports Talk, 7.90. So tonight at 6 o'clock or thereabouts, we will know the Rockets
Starting point is 02:25:23 drafting in the upcoming June draft. Now, again, they can go right now, if they play the percentages, they would have the ninth pick. They could go all the way to 14, but the numbers between 9 and 14 are. a significant difference. So my guess is their overriding numbers they'll stay at nine. There is a small percent chance
Starting point is 02:25:42 they can go to four into three and to two into one. They cannot go five to eight. It's either one to four or nine to twelve. Nine to fourteen, excuse me.
Starting point is 02:25:52 Okay. As the morning TV shows were saying, because I was very curious as soon as the whole thing about Janus is willing to listen to offers to leave
Starting point is 02:26:03 Milwaukee. And I don't think he's like miserable there. I think they know they got to do reboot because Damien Lillard is on the hook
Starting point is 02:26:13 for $50 million next year and will not play a single game for them. 50 million dollars. I mean, I love Dame Lillard. I mean, one of the all-time grades. But that's insane money. That is, I feel like if you make $15 million in your life, you should be able to cure cancer.
Starting point is 02:26:32 Or in Lillard? Or into war. Well, you just have to remember how much the teams and the owners are making. That is true. It's just the only perspective. I forget about that, but let me forget about it. Dame Lillard at all time, 75 great, yeah. Was he on the list? I would put him on my list. I think he makes the Hall of Fame, but...
Starting point is 02:26:52 Yeah, but the Hall of Fame's not nearly as a student as you, 75 and 75. He doesn't make the Sports RV Hall of Fame. How about that? In the Sports RV Hall of Fame, we reserve it for the greatest of the greatest of the... Rossie, for a five or six years... You're out. Tracy McGrady, you're out. Yow Ming, you're out.
Starting point is 02:27:11 Ross, for a five or six years' charge, Dame Liller was scoring about 35 points of with his eyes closed. Yeah, let's see. How many scoring championships for the lad? Zero. But how many top fives in those? Probably a lot. He averaged 32 points per game in 23 and didn't win a scoring championship.
Starting point is 02:27:30 Was that the year that Dimbied was averaging like 35 or something? Was that the game where he had like 80 against the Rockets? Not 80, but 60. Yeah, he scored 60. Let's see. Rookie of the year. Nine-time All-Star. Seven All-NBA, but I don't know which.
Starting point is 02:27:45 That's first or third team, yeah. Only one time first team, four times second team. Yeah, I'm not going to say you're crazy. He's going to make it. You're going to make it. He's not part of the 75 and 75 or is he? I'll look that up.
Starting point is 02:28:01 All right, back to it. Point being is that they're a mess. They need to overhaul. He was. He was. All right, he's in. Yeah. They need to overhaul.
Starting point is 02:28:09 They know that Janus and Damien take up so much. Plus, Brooke Lopez makes a lot of money too. I don't know if it's a contract year for him or not, but he ties up. of a lot of money. I'm sure Bobby Portis is not cheap. Oh, Kyle Kuzma's not cheap for both. And then maybe that trade with Washington earlier in the year. They're a mess. They're a mess. They've got no draft
Starting point is 02:28:27 picks. They need to re-configure. Not necessarily reboot, but reconfigure their team. I can't remember. I read something on how bad it was. It's like, yeah, as you mentioned, no picks, cap hell, bad contracts. And whatever they get back is going to be a significant haul. Whatever, whatever,
Starting point is 02:28:45 if they do pull their, if they do pull the trigger and Milwaukee makes a trade, they will strike it rich from a variety of draft picks and because I don't think Milwaukee wants to go 24 and 48, 58 next year. They want to go, they want to make the playoffs next year. They're probably thinking we're not close with title contender, but they have made it abundantly clear they do not want to be a bottom dweller. Or I think Phoenix kind of has to do that if they move Durant and if they move Devin Booker, which it sounds like they may not move Booker, Durant sounds like a possibility. they're not ready to do something what the Rockets did a bunch of years ago
Starting point is 02:29:19 and that was to bottom out to start to build from scratch. They don't think they're built to do that. So here's the thing. How crazy will it be tonight on the NBA rumor mill, meaning Twitter, if San Antonio or Houston gets into the top four? Because top four, Ross, makes things intriguing. for Milwaukee. Doesn't mean it's going to be a guarantee.
Starting point is 02:29:50 And as I said, as I said, to tell the truth, I didn't think a guarantee. I didn't think a top four spot means Janus goes there. Because I think there's going to be 10 teams that are going to be looking for Janus. I think it's going to be the two New York teams. It's going to be Houston, San Antonio. That's four. I think New Orleans will kick the tires on it.
Starting point is 02:30:07 You said that, who was, said something about the Lakers a minute ago? Yeah, Shams. Sharania. Oh, Shams hadn't mentioned the Lakers? He, I didn't click on the video. the title of the tweet, which K. Adams show, and it says, Janice to the Lakers, so maybe it's possible. But I don't even know.
Starting point is 02:30:22 They don't have the assets for that, unless LeBron's going out. Well, you can send him Austin Reeves. Let me tell you, Austin Reeves is, first of all, is, first of all, going to make a lot of money. Second of all, whatever team he goes to, he's going to score 20 points a game for them. Janice, Luca, and LeBron. If they don't win a championship. How does the Spurs not become all of a sudden this team to be worried about
Starting point is 02:30:49 if you have the back-to-back rookies of the year, with Victor Wimbunyama and Stefan Castle. Plus Deer and Fox. Plus Deer and Janus? How does that team not wake up of 50 wins? They would. Easily. And you can't see block the spurs
Starting point is 02:31:12 by grabbing your own player by him. Because whoever, as I said before, if you're going to grab Janus, who's 30 years old, who has at least three years of the best of him left in his body, Yeah, I wonder how concerned you would be with him not ever being, not having a credible jump shot and how much longer he can continue to just dive into the paint and be as effective as he is with no jump shot. He can do it with his athleticism that he has right now, obviously.
Starting point is 02:31:40 Right. And his size obviously matters. It's very hard to guard. Isn't he over like 60% from the field? 60% around the nose. 30 points per game? Freak. But you know what that one?
Starting point is 02:31:51 You know that thing that still doesn't solve? if you're a Rockets fan, where are you getting the outside jump shot from? Reed Shepard. Well, my guess is Reed Shepard would be a part of the trade. Maybe. First round pick under team control for three more, if not four more years.
Starting point is 02:32:12 Especially if somehow you don't have a men Thompson and you keep, if you have a men, Shingoon, and Yannis out there, there's just going to be five dudes hanging out in the paint. Which they couldn't do, by the way, against Michael Jordan. Can I ask for a jump shooter? Yes, we tried. We thought we got one of the number three overall pick.
Starting point is 02:32:30 Now he's still young, he's just a rookie. Yeah. And would it be very NBA of Cooper Flaggwan? I'm staying at number one pick going to Utah. Let's see what odds do they have. Hold on. I'm going to simulate a lottery bat. Boom.
Starting point is 02:32:46 Rockets pick, 10th. Ooh, that's not good. That's a drop of a spot. Portland jumps to one in this sim I just did. Utah has a 14% chance, yeah. So they're in the top three. Think about the teams that have the three best. Help me out with a zip.
Starting point is 02:33:00 Utah, Washington, Charlotte. Am I correct on that? Yes, Utah, Washington, Charlotte, and they all have 14%. And what's the fourth team after that? New Orleans has 12 and a half, Philadelphia, 10 and a half. Okay, so the top four teams are four of who gives a blank about their franchises. Are you all the sudden going to put Utah on national TV seven times next year? Because of the Cooper flag?
Starting point is 02:33:27 Are you going to put Charlotte on a bunch of times? Let me tell you something. The NBA guys ain't letting Cooper flag go to one of those teams. actually they're going to because the ads are so overwhelmingly in their favor. Yeah, even then, though, you add it all up. What is that? 42%. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:33:44 Still over 50%. It won't be one of those three teams. It'll be interesting. Lottery tonight. 6 o'clock. I'll be watching. Actually, I won't be the a Astros on deck. You want to get on deck for me?
