This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
10 o'clock at H-town.
Good morning, and welcome to a Tuesday edition of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross from Phoenix.
This is Sports Talk 790s.
And the Suns 92.
Yeah, the Rockets came together, no Tories and no Freddy V.
No Kevin Durant
In Sports RV
A lot of Aaron
Holiday for the second time in 10 days.
The best shooting holiday
According to Austin Rivers
When he interviewed him
On Peacock
How was the peacock?
The broadcast was good.
I thought when we talked about this
in the preseason how they were
going to have one guy on one bench and one guy
in the other bench. You know how nonverbal communication
is very important on any
broadcast with your color men. I thought
it was fine. I mean, it's a little
off here and there, but overall
pretty good. And that dude,
what's his name? Grady, something Grady?
Yeah, Michael Grady is the, uh,
was a voice of the, uh, wolf, but he does
some national stuff now. Yeah,
I think he's pretty good.
Yeah, uh, it was
weird because the feed they gave me
from my broadcast spot was the peacock feed obviously usually like at the space city feed
and uh there's stephen adams got his legs wrapped up and like austin rivers is like within
two feet of the guy i mean the access that these analysts get with the headset literally right
next to the bench is uh you don't find it anywhere else you don't you don't get that
sign on the reporters at football don't get that as close as those guys get yeah and one of the
uh there was a moment where step adam said are you live uh say hello to my mother in austral
where it was like
Stephen Adams
wants me to shout
to his mother
and I'm not going to say
no.
Yeah, I was going to say
I wonder if they have
Peacock in New Zealand.
Sure, why not?
It's a strange network name
it just is.
Why?
What's weird about it, Matt?
It's a beautiful family.
I don't need to worry about it.
Yeah, NBC Peacock.
Let your feathers fly, baby.
I mean,
if that's the weirdest name
for network,
what's the second wordest name?
I don't think it's the weirdest.
What is the weirdest?
Tubi.
That's true, but is that a network or is that a service?
Tube is a streaming service.
Fubo is a streaming service, too.
I mean, but Tooby is more of a streaming platform.
Fubo.
Well, Fubo is in a dispute.
You know what?
I guess I can save it for tomorrow.
They're in a dispute with T&T and NBC right now.
Oh, no.
And I'm trying to switch, and then I'm on the phone with the AI Xfinity person for 30 minutes.
This is the worst.
So, I'm so mad.
Oh, man, I didn't mean, I apologize.
Yeah, thank you.
I was actually having a pretty serene morning.
I know, okay, but I want you to think about this.
If I think Peacock is the weirdest name for a channel, if I'm wrong, tell me what's the weirdest cable channel that's legitimate that's out there.
It was quibby, but they folded.
Now it's Tubeby, which is owned by Fox, I believe.
It's like their, their streaming service.
And I think it's everything on there's free.
It's just got commercials.
Yeah, I watch the.
old game show channel. It's called
Buzzer. That's B-U-Z-Z-R.
Oh, B-U-Z-Z-R. They take the E
out. Apparently.
Yeah, you take the vowels out to make everything
cooler. Yes.
Today's kids. It's crazy.
All right, that's Ross. I'm Matt here
in Phoenix. Rockets came together last night
and knocked off the suns.
Dylan Brooks, not overly
happy with the officiating in last
night's game. We'll let you hear about
that. He says the Rockets are flopper sports
RV. Not an I mean a docket team. No chance.
way no way no house right what shut you above ass up i don't know alprin shingoon alprin he looks like the
inflatable uh a flailing arm dude in front of the car dealership come on i love alpi shingoon but
let's be real i love alpi shangoon no i will not besmirge his great name let's be real
come on now i don't know ross it feels like to me that's the european game and it's been that way
for 10 years now.
I mean, it is what it is.
It gets calls.
It works.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, Dylan will, in his cerebral way, we'll be explaining how I'm happy he is.
It's funny.
He wasn't bringing this up when he was teammates with Alperin-Shingo.
No, you don't have a problem with it when it's on your team.
No, that's all right.
All right.
We got a lot to get to you today.
We've got a busy show.
We're going to check in in Indianapolis coming up at the top of the hour.
Derek Schultz, our friend from Indies.
But he's been on as long as I think Roto has been one of our correspondents.
Isn't that crazy?
Maybe longer.
Yeah.
But our buddy, Derek Schultz, who covers a lot of things that Indianapolis is going to join us.
I think he's on the Locked-on Colts Network, which, you know, lockdown is a lockdown for life.
You know, Gordy's a lockdown OG.
So we'll talk to him.
We got gut fillings at 1130.
The news at noon.
E. May Addoke is going to join us today at 1 o'clock.
We have NFL Rewin with Ross at 120, and at 1.30, we have a Houston fighter by the name of Joshua Vann, who is going to be in an MMA bout,
and he's representing our community.
We get some guys together that represent Houston.
We like to get him on the show.
His nickname, Rossi, the fearless.
Hmm.
I like that.
If you're going to be a cage fighter, being fearless is probably a good quality to have.
My nickname, Rossi, you don't know this?
Oh, no.
Totally in fear.
The fearful?
Oh, yeah.
Fearful, scaredy cat, whatever you want to say, I'm afraid.
I thought your nickname was Mr. Mac and Cheese.
So we had a conversation on the bus yesterday by the mac and cheese.
No, let's move on.
You know what?
I feel like we're picking on you now at this point.
No, no, no.
First of all, it's Thanksgiving week, okay?
So food is going to be a huge conversation piece.
Number two, if I'm listening to the Matt Thomas Show Ross and I hear myself, I'm yelling at the radio.
Okay.
I absolutely am.
But I can't change who I am, sports RV.
I could lie and say I love all these things, but I just don't.
It's part of your charm.
Well, or irritants, whatever.
But wait, do you put ketchup on your tamales, by the way?
No.
Oh, Lord.
We're going to throw you out of Texas.
First of all, I don't like tamales, so it's a moot point for me.
Oh, okay, good.
But I'm seeing people talking about, I've seen it on at least two different tweets from two different people.
putting, and I needed to save them, and I apologize
for not doing so. People are putting
ketchup on their tamales.
Oh, my God.
That sounds, first of all,
I'm not a tamale guy, but I understand why they're popular.
But you would put like a gravy
or a cheese or something. I don't think
ketchup was on the list.
No.
No. It's not
good. Not good at all.
All right. So what did you think the last
nice game? Rockets won.
no Aaron Holly we talked about
a man Thompson was great
it was a night where
the Rockets got out to an early lead
and they tried several different times
I thought Dylan Brooks played really well last night for them
Booker was just Booker
who else was really good
Reed Sheper was okay in the starting lineup
you had J.D. Davison getting some minutes
I mean it was literally and again
I chose the song come together because you kind of have to go
sometimes deep to that to that bench
and that's exactly what EMA I doke
and the Rockets did last night.
Yeah, I thought it was a good game.
As you mentioned, Dylan Brooks was going off,
and you could clearly tell that he wanted to try and punish his old team.
And, you know, he had some games like that for the Rockets last year,
where he's, like, making every single turnaround jumper.
He's being aggressive.
Like, his offensive game is really good.
He came in averaging 21 points per.
As you mentioned, Reed Shepard, a bit of regression.
And he was due.
He's been shooting like 53% from three in the last 10 games or something like that.
So that was due, but I like the team ball.
I liked Amin Thompson and Alpern Shungoon.
There was that one moment where Jabari Smith Jr.
And Amin Thompson were working the ball back and forth, like playing together.
As you said, come together was a perfect choice for the song.
And it was great team ball, the athleticism of Amin Thompson.
I was saying this to absolutely nobody listening on KTRH last night, Matt.
But on a, in a league of like the,
biggest freak athletes on the planet,
Amin Thompson sets himself apart.
The plays that he can make,
these little in-out, like, many Euro step dribbles
that he can make the quickness.
And actually, on the Peacock broadcast,
Austin Rivers was talking about this.
Like, he knew he was athletic.
He knew he could jump.
He knew he was fast.
But he didn't know until seeing him firsthand
how quick he is.
And he's six foot seven.
Like, he's so quick.
His zero to 60,
zero to 30, zero to 10 is so good.
he's so explosive
and he's just
the control that he has
over his body and I would say the same thing
for Alper and Shingoon for how big he is
it was just on full display last night
and men Thompson put on a show
and I'm going to say this you know a lot of those guys
when I go to the Eurostep like James would do that
he would have to go right to the lane
he's pulling up at the dotted circle
which is about a seven foot jumper
those should be made but easier said than done
and that's what he has to do
that's what makes it that much more difficult
But everybody on the planet on both teams
knows that a men Thompson's not a great jump shooter.
So what do they do?
They sag off of them.
They back off.
They play the drive.
If they're playing the drive
and you're still able to drive,
you're really good.
And the men Thompson's able to do that.
This is my obligatory
and I do this every time after I call a game.
Please, Houston.
I love you.
Please embrace this team.
It's going to be a fun season.
I cannot guarantee
supremacy in the NBA.
I certainly cannot promise
supremacy in the Western Conference
because I don't believe Oklahoma City
is ever going to lose again.
But it's so much fun.
And look, I have the great pleasure,
and I'm honored and privileged
to be at these games directly
to see this stuff going on.
And I talk to the Phoenix media
or people that are fellow broadcasters.
I'm like, God, y'all are good.
I'm like, and the number one thing.
Like, I saw, can I name drop here for one quick second?
Oh, here we go.
I talked for about 10 minutes with Tom Thibito yesterday.
The former Knicks Wolves coach, Chicago Bulls coach, could not have been nicer.
I mean, I was like, are you sure this is really you?
Are you, this is an AI version of you?
And he's like, y'all are really good.
He says, the West is so filthy, but it's just y'all, you know, think about it.
Tonight, last night was a group of made okay starters, obviously, but.
I know.
That's all, how many people are so OG.
How many people are getting that?
I respect the hell out of it.
So the funniest thing was we're talking about the game last night,
and I told Debs, and again, here comes another one of those things.
You can go and play it as often as you can.
I said, my first year calling basketball, he was the, you were the coach of the wolves.
And we put a crowd mic on the court table, and I'm broadcasting for my broadcast spot in Minneapolis,
which is the top part of the lower level.
And there is somebody just MFing everything.
And I said, we realized midway through the first quarter, I said, it was Coach Thibito, just, I mean, and I told him, I said, I said, I had to turn your microphone off because you were just MFing, and he laughed and they apologized.
He could have been nicer.
He's going to get another job again.
He's a good coach.
He weird and very temperamental, but man, he can coach.
But he was there last night.
He's like, y'all are really good, and it's going to be fun to watch how this thing plays out.
West is so filthy.
So please, again, I would love to be able to tell you this is a 60-win team that's going
to win the West.
I would love to tell you that, I can tell you, for minimum, Rockets play the Thunder.
It's going to be in a very entertaining series.
We saw that an opening night, as a matter of fact, against the Thunder.
Just say a small prayer.
Said that the Fountain of Youth hits Kevin Durant, and he scores 36 points a game in
every one of those games against Thunder if they play them in the playoff series.
God bless it, Ross.
Oklahoma City just won't lose.
the thunder are feeling like
they're 17 and 1
and Jalen Williams still hasn't played
17 and 1
yes 17 point
differential 16.9
they set the record last year with 12.9
or whatever
it's not
it's not good
you know what big picture
Hey, you play the games in front of you.
That's right.
They didn't look like they were overmatched by the Thunder in game one.
Sure didn't.
We got a few more with them coming up this year.
All right, 713212-5-7-90.
If you want to chime in on the Rockets, Cougars last night,
go to overtime to beat Syracuse in the Players-era tournament
for the big check.
Good, congratulations to them.
Your beloved Longbournes last night.
No other college basketball needs to be mentioned.
Oh, okay, that's fine.
We can't, we can't, no, it's fine. I'm not going to do that to you.
It's fine. Whatever. I actually, I know, well, I was up. I was on air until midnight, by the way.
And I actually forgot the game was on when I went home because I just went straight to bed.
And then I checked it this morning and I was disappointed.
I'm sorry.
How sorry are you, one to ten?
Nine.
Oh, you're such a lot.
Why would I, why would I be?
I'm sorry for a Maui invitational loss?
I think you need to recalibrate.
Okay, four now.
Nine is like my dog just died.
Okay, 2.3.
Back with more in a moment.
We're the Matt Thomas show with Ross until 2 o'clock today here on Sports Talk 790.
1022 on this Tuesday edition of the show.
Ross, are you okay with our tornadoes back home?
That was crazy yesterday, huh?
Yeah, I'm okay.
I know some people who
They're okay too
But they went right by them as well
Like over there
I believe it was like in the spring area
Yeah
It's crazy man
I don't know what the heck's going on
There's looked like there's some
A lot of tree damage some house damage as well
I don't know much more beyond that
But it is pretty wild stuff
I have never thankfully been a part of it
Now look we've all been around tornado warnings
We know friends that have been around it
But everybody that they've ever talked about that says they've been in and around a tornado knows it's a sound that you'll never forget.
Yeah, the train horn or something like that.
Yeah, like the destruction and worrying about whether or not you're in a safe space or not.
I mean, when we were kids, we were like, we had to go hide in a bathtub or hide in your closet,
but I don't even know if that even makes a difference anymore.
These things are so powerful.
It's crazy.
And to me, like tornado, it's a hurricane, you can kind of prepare yourself for earthquakes, no, but.
still tornadoes just seem terrifying
man like what do you even do
you know I have a quick story
at west Kentucky there was a dual tornado
that rampage to bowling green
and all you could do because we were in apartments
and dorms all you could do was just
sleep and hope you didn't get hit
and thankfully went around campus
but the entire city got destroyed
yeah this is over
100 homes destroyed in northwest
Harris County
in the Klein area
yeah an old co-worker of mine
at the University of Houston
One of my old directors on the U of H broadcast, his parents' home just got demolished,
and he put some photos up on Twitter.
It's, I mean, nothing we can do to say.
We're very sorry, and my goodness, just our sympathy is gone to anybody that has been affected by that.
But my gosh, it's crazy.
It just feels like to me, and again, maybe it's climate change.
Maybe it's just our weather that's as warm as it is right now, that these bad boys are kicking our ass a lot more than they did when, you know,
Yeah, I don't know.
It just seemed like tornadoes have been worse, but I don't know.
Yeah.
All right.
So, uh, hopefully, it's weather okay back home today?
You guys are going to make it today, all right?
Yeah, there's supposed to be some rain, I think, again, but it was pleasant this morning.
And it's supposed to get chilly, I think, into the 40s tonight or tomorrow night.
Uh-oh.
You'll be a good, good night for some chili, right?
Oh, yeah.
And some watching some talk on the Pichock.
Chili, they got a great review from Jonathan.
You know, Jonathan, that made me feel good.
I'm glad you got me a good review.
serious. I'm not even going to sugarcoat it. It was really good.
Did you use sausage or ground beef or none of the above?
Huh. It's a secret.
Oh, okay. No, I'm just kidding. It was, normally I make three meats.
I do a stew meat, a, you could call it a filler meat, and then a sausage. I used, for the stew, we used a venison backstrap.
My brother-in-law had recently killed a deer. And then I used some.
Yeah, some chili chuck, a ground chuck, and then I used some Italian hot sausage.
Nice.
Those are all great.
Mm-hmm.
I love Italian hot sausage.
I love deer meat, and, you know, who can go wrong with some ground chuck?
Yes, sir.
You know, Ross, let me say, folks, can do more than just, you know, come on and babble about endless nonsense.
He can give you some good cooking tips.
Yeah.
Like a little pop-o shot.
Yeah, I'm thinking about making a chili truck, but that sounds very much.
really hot in Houston. I think I should go
north and further north for that.
Let me tell you something, ladies and gentlemen. I have sponsored
Ross one thing in life. It was a poker event.
I lost my ass on that.
But how about this? Why don't I sponsor
you in a chili contest? Could you win?
I don't know. We'd have to talk to our
chili competition guy.
Where is that guy? He's got to be bringing
us some samples. Yeah, I know. He's
a national champ. He's like international champ.
Yeah, I don't think I can measure up to
that. Well,
all I'm saying is he's going to taste it.
he'd be the real judge.
If he doesn't like it, you know, it's done.
But we need, like, we need somebody to do a real taste test.
I'm the people's champ, Matt.
You are the people's champ.
All right, real quick, we mentioned to Dylan Brooks not overly happy with some of the officiating yesterday as a Rockets.
I mean, I thought the game was brilliantly called.
I didn't see one air on either side for the entire two and a half hour broadcast.
It's going to be honest with it.
That's okay.
I mean, Dylan Brooks flops around too.
Oh, he does.
He had five fouls.
But so did Jabari Smith had five.
I mean, there were a lot of guys in foul trouble.
So here is Dylan after the game talking about how maybe the rocket's got a few calls their way.
On the play, but I've never seen so many flops being rewarded on the other side.
And honestly, it felt like I was in a Feeba game, like playing basketball on FIBA where you just get rewarded for flopping.
And that killed every single run we had.
couldn't be physical
but the rockets were physical
grabbing and holding
and when we try to do it
there was calls right away
okay
uh okay
that's just him
it's just him being him
it is what it is
yeah the rockets
do alprung shingoon probably the worst offender
but everybody flops around a little bit
it's the NBA. It happens on both sides
and Dylan Brooks flops
around two. Devin Booker
flops around two.
Oh yeah. Oh, yeah.
But one thing
he said does kind of ring true
is the Rockets
force
the referees
to relax a bit
to where it kind of like in football
where there's holding on every single play
and they're not going to call it on every single play.
The Rockets do do a lot of clutching
and grabbing and pushing and shoving
and they're physical and they set a tone
and they set a baseline to where there is going to be a high level of
physicality and the referees aren't going to call it
so I mean that's that's not an accident
that's something IMA ad doka will tell you they do that
like they get physical
it's what they do it's their brand of basketball
do you know why the officials give the rockets breaks
one because we deserve them and two because
you may ad doca gives you the death stare you want to run far away from that
that's true
I mean, if you were going to go, you know, if you were going to do what do they call it,
fight club, he'd be the first guy coach you'd take, correct?
Yeah, it wouldn't even be close.
We're going to take J.J. Reddick? Come on, man.
You're not taking Steve Kerr.
No. Steve's car is getting folded like a lawn chair.
Exactly.
You're not taking J.B. Bickersap. He's a lover or not a fighter.
You know, it'd be sneaky good, I think.
Who?
It's got some sneaky red-ass.
Eric Spolstra
I got one for you here
give me a ruling on Jason Kidd
Ooh I think Jason Kidd
Would be a good one
Is Chonsie Billups on or off the board
He is definitely off the board
He's at home
Not available to media
He's out on bail
Still paying out that 5 million bail
He's out on bail literally
That's so crazy to say out loud
All right we're going to come back
We're going to play an audience
This is why the Matt Thomas
show Ross is so beloved by so few.
Ross sent a soundbite to me in our show
group yesterday that I sent to Jonathan and said,
we need to play it. Yes, it's an
all-timer. It is an all-timer
featuring, and I would think Ross in the history of the Matt
Thomas show, Ross, we have played less than
three Creighton play-by-play calls.
It makes me laugh just thinking about it. I can't wait.
All right, so the Creighton Blue Jays radio
play-by-play announcer loses his mind. We'll hear it next.
That's an understatement.
Matt Thomas show, Ross, continues here on Sports Talk 7.9.
I'm here in Phoenix after the Rockets beat the Sons.
We leave later today to go to San Francisco to take on the Warriors.
And we'll have it for you tomorrow.
And that will be then Thanksgiving.
It's our final show of the week tomorrow.
So looking forward to spending a lot of time with you guys tomorrow.
And certainly today, if you want to join us, you are more than welcome to do so.
We are, I want to say, Ross, are we the only really.
show in town that enjoys talking to people?
Everybody else is just monologue radio, right?
Yeah, what a bunch of idiots
and losers. Yeah, idiots.
We like y'all. We don't mind talking
to you. Yes, yes.
It's not love sometimes, depending on who this.
Some of you have some terrible takes, but generally speaking,
we enjoy visiting with you. So,
let's do this.
Let's let me hear the audio. We have our buddy
Gary in Spring has an early gut feeling. Now, can you
not wait till 1130? I mean, isn't there a rule that
gut feelings at 1130? Yeah, but he told me that he got
like something to do at 11. He wanted to get
Oh, he did. Okay. Okay. So Gary, hang out. He's got his summit 11. We'll get his early gut feeling because he's an OG listener. I do want to play the audio. Creighton played Baylor yesterday. Ross, how much of the game did you see before this highlight? Zero. Me too. Yeah, it's not a top of mind game. But there are two good teams, Creighton in the Big East, obviously Baylor and the Big 12. And there was a controversial call made in that contest. I happen to see the video of it. There was a blocking foul that was called.
against Creighton, and the Creighton announcer on the Blue Jays Radio Network,
not overly pleased with what he saw.
One second.
Car into the paint.
Miss the dunk.
And I'm fucking foul.
What are you talking about?
That was two seconds after the play ended.
Car driving.
He's outside.
the circle. He's outside the
circle and he's set. He was
outside the circle and he was set.
Brack Smith blew it.
He was outside the restricted area.
He was straight up and down.
He was set like the statue
sitting out in front of New York, New York
and they called that.
That's an absolutely
hoarse crap call.
In a game
that's been played out like this.
unbelievable bailout call by an incompetent referee and bald don't lie
this is in Vegas by the way
oh my god that's incredible
okay so I am going to I'll have an opinion about this
but I want to give you two an opportunity first to say what you want to
say about the raw emotions of the voice of the Blue Jays, the Creighton Blue Jays.
By the way, Baylor won the game 81.74.
With that call, now first of all, did you see the call?
What did you think of the call? And then more importantly, what did you think of the play-by-play call?
Yeah, so it looks like it was a bad call.
I mean, it was barely a bump.
The guy was standing his ground outside the restricted area.
It looks like that's a pretty bad foul call.
And he moved up the way, too.
Yeah, like he barely touched
Like that's a bad call
Number one
Number two, I don't know
I guess I am curious your opinion
Matt if it's unprofessional
If it's not becoming of a play by playman
To complain about the officials
But I will say
Entertainment 10 out of 10
Professionalism
2 out of 10
But this is a clear
And obvious bad call
It was a
terrible
at worst case
Ross
a non-wistle
there was not enough contact
secondly
what made it worse was the fact the whistle
as the announcer said came so late
I'm just going to tell you
I've been doing play by play on the radio
since 1996
I've never
lost my mind that much in a call
in doing this for
29 years.
Can you recall ever getting close?
What's the most you think you've lost it?
Oh, I got one.
When Kevin Durant's, both of his feet were out of bounds?
Yes.
In Golden State, and you were on the call of Craig?
That was incredible.
I think we have that somewhere.
Yeah.
Because Craig didn't see it, but I did.
And he's like, so I'm telling Craig what's going on.
This is when Durant was had.
I mean, did he have both feet?
out of bounds on the sideline, I want to say?
Both.
He was both feet were out of bounds by like two to three feet,
and he threw the ball back in bounds and it didn't get called.
I know exactly what I'm going to be all talking about.
It was ridiculous.
That was the game where I was on the color for that game.
And yeah, I guess I was incredulous to that.
But there was no interpretation needed for that.
That was cut and dry how far his feet were out of bounds.
Because say what you will, fouls are still subjective.
they shouldn't be, but they are subjective.
How much contact do you allow?
Is it the offensive player that initiates it?
Is it a defensive player?
Is it a no call?
Those things can clearly happen.
But I lost my mind in the most professional way like, wait a minute.
He's out of bounds.
There's no offense or bots.
He's out of bounds.
In terms of subjectivity on a call, I don't remember losing my mind like that.
And here's the reality of it is that.
In 2025, while I appreciate the energy, he had to have known that his rant, it was about 40 seconds,
he was going to go viral because any time you do something like that in today's world,
you're going to go viral.
Someone's going to catch a piece of audio of that and play it.
So I don't know if that's his stick in general, or he just was really upset,
or he knew the moment was going to be arbitrary for him to say what he wanted to say.
I just know that if I took every one of the bad calls that I see when I call NBA games, Ross,
and had that kind of energy every time, I'd have no voice and probably would die on the air.
It was great stuff, though.
It was a bad call.
I thought he was going to say horse bleep, too.
He said horse crap.
He was awfully close.
I'll say this.
I probably would have been on his same level if it would have decided the game.
but it did not do so
I think what was the score at the time
like I told you they won 81-74
and let's see 72 to 66
so there was still quite a bit of basketball left
two minutes yeah
but yeah two possession game with two minutes
yeah
it is what I mean look
I don't know if that's who he is
I don't know you know we've not heard of him before right
well how many Omaha announcers
have you heard of in your life zero now you got one i don't know what's the guy's name we even know
larry just plainly he's goes by larry he goes by one name like michael michael
i can i yeah let me let me see if i can print i don't think the creton blue jays announcer
is a single name person i mean if he is he must be that popular i didn't know let's see here
crating i'm googling this is great radio creighton blue jays radio announcer let's take a
because he's got a name
one of the
comments says
is this
Gilbert Godfrey
that's funny
let's see here
John Bishop is his name
and the ball don't lie
is like the coup de grace
that's
Jonathan didn't need a ruling on that
can old white men say
ball don't lie or is that out of bounds
no that's a basketball thing
ball doesn't lie
yeah you say that
I was in an all game
versus Orlando
ball don't lie
you know I did for the first time yesterday
I think in probably five or six years.
I said bang.
That's a Mike Breen thing.
Oh, you stole a bang?
I didn't mean to.
It just came out.
That's fine.
It's supposed to be natural, visceral.
That's what the great play-by-play men do.
I never write anything down.
Yeah, I don't force it.
By way, U of H stole my nothing but nylon.
You see on their tweet, I had to call them out on a bit steel.
That's been used since like the 70s, right?
As far as I'm concerned, I'm the one that created it.
1044 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We're going to go to Indianapolis at the Unitedapolis at the United States.
the top of the hour. We'll talk to Gary in Spring because
Gary is at O'G, and he has an early gut
feeling. We must get that in. It's
1044, the Matt Thomas show with Ross, here from
Phoenix on Sports Talk 790.
Rossi, I'm
20 ounces into my first 24 ounce
coffee. I'm going to take a break at some point during the
show to get a refill because it is free.
I have free, they're all up as $8
in the coffee, so.
I've had more coffee in this trip.
Oh, my God, I am so wired now,
Rossi. Ooh, Lordy.
I get your tolerance up.
You need to be careful.
I'm serious.
It starts a bad pattern.
Yeah, it's, I've been trying.
That's why I don't drink any more iced tea because I feel like I drink so much coffee now that I have to balance it out with the water.
First world problems.
All right.
Matt and Ross with you here.
We're going to go to Indianapolis at the top of the hour.
Let's talk to Gary in Spring who hates the wave on 7-90.
Gary, good morning to you.
Hey, good morning, guys.
Great show as usual.
Well, man, that was kind of a blast from the past when they had,
what's the guy used to play for us in the game last night was crying foul?
Dylan Brooks.
I heard him on that take y'all had there.
And a big old bully was just a whining and a crying.
But I miss him.
I love watching him be the bully on our team.
I miss him.
And he was a great defensive player.
Anyway, I was calling about, when I called in last week,
just remind you from last week
I called in on shut your bum ass up
and there was that one guy
I think his name was Mark
he was calling in just dragging the Texas
through the dirt
next three games
0 and 3
and I called him a DB
and you didn't really care for that
but anyway so
proofs in the pudding
from what he was saying
that's what he is
but I just wanted to
toot my own horn there
I commented on that take there
that the Texans were going to win that game
23 to 19 and lo and behold guess what they won at 23 to 19 so just a little toot on my own hands
do you know that Gary that uh Brian mctaggart uh the Astros reporter for mlb.com heard you
he texted me on sunday and said I heard a caller to your show say 23 to 19 so Gary your
words were heard by a respected reporter in the marketplace oh beautiful beautiful but I do have
a premonition it's too early for uh gut freedom but my premonition is and you may
out like this one either but but turn about it's fair play you know what's good for the goose good
for the gander the one of the uh starting players on the oklahoma city thunder within the next
30 days they will they will go down with a serious injury to bring them back to the pack so that's
just what what the feeling that i have going forward in the future so hopefully that one doesn't
hurt your feelings as much as when i called marca a db but you call him a douxie but anyway just going to
calling and tell you guys great show
and thanks for everything. All right, thank you
Gary. One of their starters is down.
They're 17 and 1. By the way,
I think it's Ray that he was talking about, not
Mark. Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, it was Ray in Miami.
Ray's in Miami great listening show, but he was
I think it was yesterday when Ray called
he was much more positive towards the Texan. I think he said
they're only going to lose two more time before the end of the year.
What was he all upset about? I can't remember
last week.
I think it's how poorly they
played against the Titans and barely won.
I'm not too sure.
Something about, was he talking about C.J. Stroud or something, too?
Yeah, there's some C.J. Stroud hate.
By the way, I'm thinking about muting C.J. Stroud and muting the words Davis Mills.
Do you think that's the right thing to do?
Yeah, you can do it.
You can also put a time to mute. You can mute it for like a week.
I mean, look, I just think for my mental health, I need C.J. to throw for 350 yards this one against the Colts.
Well, you're going to do it. I don't know, but I don't know if I want to live in a world, Ross.
what we're talking about whether or not
who's a quarterback.
It doesn't matter.
C.J. Stroud is the better quarterback.
You don't even have to speak
that into existence.
No, it's the truth.
It's the truth.
That's crazy.
Okay, so there you go.
Yeah, so Gary and Spring
literally got the game score right.
And that's why tomorrow
when I make my prediction,
I'm going to give you some
obnoxiously weird score.
I like that.
like i'm gonna go like 17 to 11 or something crazy like okay well maybe 11's a little crazy
a little scoregami there all right 713 212 5 790 if you want to join the conversation 713
uh 212 5 790 uh real quick rossi uh tv analyst of sports you know writers and whatnot are predicting
at least 50 million people to watch the chief's cowboys game on thanksgiving it would make it the most
watched regular season game
in the history of the NFL.
Really? 50 million?
Which I'm curious. For a 6 and 5 and 5
team and what are they 5 and 4 and 1
or whatever the Cowboys are?
Or 5 5 and 1? I would
think for two reasons. Well,
three reasons. One, it's the only game on at that time.
Two of the Dallas Cowboys have this
hellaciously big following, which we
don't understand. And three, the
Chiefs have a huge following. And
my guess is, would
there be a shot of seeing Taylor at the game? Because
at his Thanksgiving.
Oh, Taylor Swift.
Yeah, you get that angle in there.
But if you're Taylor Swift and you want to have Thanksgiving with your fiancé,
you just wait for him to come back.
You're not going to have Thanksgiving dinner with him before the game.
You're going to have it when you get back to Kansas City.
But you get any, no.
It's interesting to me that there are several, because I do follow a handful of sports
media writers, this, they're talking about this being.
the most watch game in the history of the regular season.
Now, I don't even know what is the most watch game.
I guess I could do a group of research and fight on.
Probably involves the Cowboys.
But Kansas City doesn't, I mean, the cash aid for Kansas City is incredible.
I get it, but isn't it more about the Cowboys and more about the only game on at 3 o'clock on a Thursday afternoon on Thanksgiving day to anything else?
I mean, three o'clock on Thanksgiving.
That's like prime time.
That is sweet.
They both need this win, right?
They both need this win and try to get a playoff.
Is it a must-win game for the Dallas Cowboys?
It really is for them.
Not for the Chiefs, but it is for the Cowboys, for sure.
So my guess is, look, the Eagles, I mean, the Cowboys have played the Eagles before on Thanksgiving.
They've played the Giants on Thanksgiving.
They've played Packers.
I mean, it's not because Kansas City's bringing his straw.
It's because I think the game is really good, right?
Kansas City's part of it.
Yeah, of course they are.
It takes time of tango.
Yeah.
Kelsey or whatnot.
So, by way, Rorto is going.
going to join us tomorrow at
1 o'clock. Most watched is
22 Cowboys and Giants.
Also, they've changed the Nielsen
rate. It probably is going to be the most watch because haven't they
changed the Nielsen rating? They're counting more streaming and stuff like that.
Yeah, they're kidding. So yeah. You know what? Chalk it up.
Gut feeling. I'm going to lock it in. Most watch game ever.
In a regular season.
Are we supposed to be like a plotting NFL? No, I mean,
it's cool. It's good for them. Yeah.
By the way, also, Roger Goodell is saying they're going to probably
add some more international games.
I'm telling you, Rossi,
I made a gut feeling about two years ago
that I think everybody's going to have to play one international game.
And then you wanted to back off that.
You wanted to back off that?
You back on?
I know. I'm back on.
Because thinking it does make sense
if you're playing a 17 game schedule, at least for now,
you could have eight home, eight road,
and one international game.
I guess it's ridiculous.
But whatever.
I always thought it made sense to have one neutral site game,
like put it at a college stadium or something.
You can put the Cowboys against, I don't know, the Saints and put it in Austin.
I think that would be really cool, but they don't care or care about the college markets.
They want to go to Amsterdam.
They want to go to, you know, Sydney.
They want to go, you know, they want the NFL game to travel the world because people do watch those games.
And you do create a new fan base, and you do have an opportunity to sell more gear.
Yeah, you want to expand your reach.
They've already dominated.
They've already won America.
So now you might not go ahead and win the world.
Yep.
Jay and Ray?
Hmm.
You can call them a Jay.
I can forget it.
Those two gentlemen will get to you coming up in a few minutes.
I'll friend Derek Schultz from Indianapolis.
He's the locked-on culture reporter.
Long-time front of the show joins us next year at 1058 on Sports Talk 790.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
1102 Sports Talk 790.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We're coming to you today from Phoenix, Arizona, where the Rockets beat the suns last night in
The city of San Francisco tomorrow to play the Golden State Warriors,
but now we're going to spend some time talking about the football scene,
and we'll do that with our friend, long time in front of the show, Derek Schultz, 9 at Shultz 975.
He is with Locked on Colts.
He's Golden Blackcom.
He's life at Purdue.
I mean, how many jobs?
I mean, I ask you this every year.
Are you up in like nine jobs now, Derek Schultz?
Yeah, it's probably too much.
I have an 8-year-old son, which would be, I guess, the biggest job of all, right?
But, yeah, it's getting up there.
I think I'm approaching my bandwidth maximum, for sure.
Really quick, 30 seconds on this.
You go from the Indiana Pacers winning the Eastern Conference
with a team that might lose 60 games in one year.
How brutal is that for a transition?
It's brutal.
But the hope is that, you know, they're the 97 spurs all over again, right?
And then everything gets back to normal right away.
But, yeah, they've lost all the momentum and buzz.
And it stays.
It stays to the fan base and the Colts are pretty good again.
So it's been a tough slot for the pace, there's no doubt.
All right, Derek.
Tell me about the Colts.
I don't think anybody anticipated them being off to the start they are.
And look, they have been on top of the AFC South or about since the start.
What did you think about this team going in?
And I'm going to assume that you are beyond elated on how they've turned out so far
with a handful of weeks left to go in the season.
Yeah, I think I thought what most people saw.
Okay, here we go.
Here's another team that is not devoid of talent, but they've got enough talent.
to go 8, 9, 9, and 8, and not matter for the 10th straight year, 11th straight year,
however long it's been.
They haven't won this division since 2014.
They've won one playoff game over that span, and they've largely been stuck in the NFL's
purgatory.
You know, the old saying is, be good or be bad, just don't be ordinary, and the Colts
have been really ordinary over the last couple of years.
So, you know, for them to jump out to a 7-1 and 8-2 start was a very nice surprise around
these parts.
And, you know, they're still in good position now, even struggling a little bit over the past three weeks.
But, you know, the fact that, Matt, they were the most efficient offense in the NFL this entire century through the first eight games.
If you're asking me, if I had any idea that they would be better on offense than the 2007 Patriots, albeit over an eight-week stretch, I would have laughed you out of the room.
So, yeah, I mean, this is, this success so far, for the most part, has come out of nowhere.
But then you kind of look at it at, you know, Jonathan Taylor's been a good player for a long time.
The Forrest Bukter has been a good player for a long time.
It's a lot of the same names and faces.
It's just, you know, Daniel Jones really stabilized a quarterback position
that had been grossly unstable over the last decade or so, to say the least.
We have seen a fair amount of the cult so far this year,
and obviously a lot of folks saw the game against the Chiefs on Sunday.
Daniel has been excellent.
I wouldn't give him a 10, but I'd give him an 8 out of 10,
and I think going in, people thought Daniel Jones was just trying to hold on to his NFL career
by signing a deal with the Colts.
Yeah, I think Aidan, I'm sorry about my dog, let me tell us somewhere else.
No, that's all right, we like the dog.
A lot of Amazon deliveries here to the season, right?
I think there had been a lot of, you know, when you look at Jones,
and playing in New York, there was a lot of a special, you know, the section of his game.
And you wondered how much was the player and how much was actually the organization.
And I think it turns out that probably a lot of it was just the fact that
the Giants are one of the worst run organizations in American pro sports.
But, yeah, Jones being a solid B has been better than what the cults have had because,
frankly, you know, Anthony Richardson has been a D or an S.
And, you know, to upgrade a couple of letter grades the way that he has, again, it's about
stability.
It's not even really about raising the ceiling, which is all that we talked about in this
time of Richardson.
Oh, just wait.
He's going to hit.
And, man, his athleticism and watch out for his ceiling.
Well, the problem is, is that the floor.
was so far down that you know you couldn't even see it uh and with jones at the very least you knew that
the floor was solid your footing was going to be solid and um and he's been even more than that
i mean at times he's looked like a um you know a pro bowl level i guess player um now that hasn't
happened the last three weeks but when you just look at his numbers and the efficiency and
the way that he's commanded the pocket um he's been all the things that he was not in new york
Even in 2022, he never played to this level through the first 10 games here that he has in Indianapolis.
Derek Schultz locked on Colts with us here on the Matt Thomas Show at 1106.
All right.
So you mentioned the last three weeks.
Come from behind win against the Falcons of Berlin, the road loss at the Steelers, and then a road loss at Kansas City.
Are there chinks in the armor?
Is it the moment is too big?
It's not Daniel Jones' fault exclusively.
And the one thing that I noticed, and granted again, I watched the game on Sunday on the red zones.
I was only catching the parts of the game.
It felt like that Jonathan Taylor could have been used a lot more in the second half against Kansas City to keep the chiefs off the field.
Are you suggesting that Jonathan Taylor should have carried the ball more than once in the fourth quarter?
Matt, is that what you're saying?
I mean, I'm not a football god, but I'm going to kind of go with that if it's okay with you.
I mean, come on, yeah, you're 150% right.
And that's been the main takeaway from this game, you know,
as we've been kind of looking back on Sunday, on Monday, Tuesday,
and sports talk radio circles and podcasts and all that has been the fact that they just,
they ignored the best player that they have.
And that's what Taylor is.
Look, you know, Steve Feigolo decided, and he's a Hall of Fame coordinator,
he's done an unbelievable job.
He decided that he was going to die before he would let Jonathan Taylor beat them.
And that's fine.
We've seen teams do that and stack the box and all that.
But even running into a brick wall, when you've got an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter,
the utility of running the ball means that you're also eating clock.
So even if you're not necessarily gaining yards in big chunks,
you can at least take some time off the clock and not give Patrick Mahomes more chances,
more bites at the apple, if you will.
So it's, you know, I think Shane Seichen is a gifted offensive mind.
He's done a wonderful job scheming up this team.
And there's a reason why they were the most efficient offense in the 21st century
through the first eight games.
A lot of that had to do with Stuyken and his smarts.
But I do think that just like all NFL coaches,
he out thinks himself sometimes.
And I think he outfought himself a lot on Sunday.
The ball absolutely should have been to Jonathan Taylor's hands more.
And the Colts went three out, four straight drives.
And that allowed the Chiefs to sneak back into the game
and eventually, you know, kind of saved their season by winning that game in overtime.
I'm presuming that the Colts are preparing for C.J. Strauss that we certainly are.
And again, he's got a clear concussion protocol.
We think he would have done so.
if the Texans' Bills game was on Sundays
compared to Thursday. With that being
said, describe to the audience back here
your general thoughts about the pass
rush that the Colts have provided
their team so far this year?
Can I give you a phrase for the Colts
pass rush? Because I have a phrase that pops
into my mind and it's
eh.
It's fine.
You know, it's not
bad. It's certainly not good.
I'll give you
is some optimism. Well, I guess not optimism if you're in Houston, but optimism for folks there
in Indianapolis is that Laiu Latu has five sacks in his last six games, which I know doesn't
sound like much, but that's a big step forward for a guy that they used the first round pick on
two years ago and who they really wanted to pop this year. He's really starting to show some
signs, and he's not only pressuring the quarterback where he's getting home. Quiddique is just a guy.
He's a first round guy that they took out of Michigan a couple years ago, who's a perfectly
adequate NFL player, but not a guy who's going to keep anybody up at night.
And they have filled out their depth, injury-wise, they're going to get Samson-Ebbocount back.
You know, Taekwon Lewis might come back as well.
So they have some veteran depth as well.
But I think overall, I mean, if you're grading all of the past rushes in the NFL,
the Colts would probably be somewhere squarely in the middle.
That said, which are various ward and now Soss Gardner,
they're much more apt to be successful in the defensive secondary.
and I think with better coverage, there's a chance that that pass rush numbers-wise does a little bit better than it has through the first half, through the halfway point in the season.
All right, for I let you run.
So how does things play out?
I wouldn't say it's a pivotal game, more so for the Texans that it would be for the Colts.
Indianapolis still holds on a one-game lead.
I'm not sold on Jacksonville.
I don't know how you feel about him, Derek, but if I'm a Colts fan, I'm not worried about it.
For that matter, the Texans shouldn't be worried.
But how do you see this thing playing out?
I like to get to the crystal ball for you.
I agree with you on Jacksonville.
I like these conversations because we're in the trust tree,
so we can just both talk about the Jaguars behind their back
whenever we get together like this.
Look, I think it's, I understand from a standing standpoint,
you're right.
It's not a critical game for the Colts,
but in a way it is.
You know, they've lost two of three.
They have a murderous finishing stretch here
where they have Houston twice, Jacksonville twice,
a good San Francisco team,
and then they have to go at Seattle.
So all their layouts are done.
There's no Raiders, there's no dolphins,
there's no Titans game that's coming to save,
the Colts, they're done with all of that.
So they really have to protect their home fields and win a division home game
if they're going to want to hold on here.
So I do think it's a big game for the Colts.
And this is what I always do with this matchup.
I lead towards the home team.
Colts are unbeat at home.
Their offense has been much, much better at home than on the road,
albeit against some of those same teams I just talked about,
Raiders, Dolphins, Titans, things like that.
But I do think the Colts find a way to get it done at home.
But I'd be lying to you if I said that people in Indy, Matt, weren't,
slutting around.
right now. They are sweating big time, and they're sweating
in Houston much more than they're sweating Jacksonville.
That is for sure. Happy
holidays, you, the family, and the dog,
and we will talk again probably closer
to the final week of the season. I hope for
both sides it means something, honestly, because those
week 18 games that you bring
in subs, you're like, nobody cares
about this game, so hopefully it'll mean it'll mean something. Thank you
for the time, friend, as always.
Thanks, Matt. Take care.
All right. Derek Schultz,
locked on Colt with us here
on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Take a short
time out. We'll go back to the phones.
We have gut feelings coming up with the bottom of the hour, and the gut feelings are this.
You want to make a sports prediction, like Gary did earlier.
Did you catch it?
He called the show last week and predicted 23 to 19 Texans beat the bills.
He literally got the score correct.
If you want to brag about your gut feelings, you know where to find us.
Bottom of the hour, 713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-790.
Rossi may have held the curtain back?
Does it matter what I say?
I don't know.
I almost took some nighttime medicine.
Well, that would have been terrible.
Oh, yeah.
Let's get you hopped up on caffeine and on night while.
That sounds great.
What is wrong with me?
Jeez, happy Thanksgiving.
How much time you got?
It's only a four-hour show.
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Thanks again to Derek Shultz.
We used to have him on W.
Andy.
But now he's locked on Colts.
how we feeling um i'm making no prediction by the way i've decided are you serious yeah because i always
get him wrong why why would you want to hear from me anyway because i want to know your opinion
and then especially when you get it wrong i want to crush you on monday
well then okay that that's um that's part of your repertoire and i respect that so i will
all right i'll make a prediction tomorrow okay good what's today you have a prediction oh we're off to
Oh, this is a short week.
Tomorrow's our last day.
Oh, what a beautiful time to be alive, and then it's Thanksgiving,
and then I'm going to Austin, watch the Longhorn beat down the Aggies.
By the way, I'm trying to get a UT guy on the show.
I try to reach out to Fossey Whitaker, no response.
Really?
Yeah.
He's busy.
Doing what?
Your name is Fossey.
You can't be that busy.
Whoa, Foshwitt, Whitaker.
Yeah, but he's an adult calling himself Fuzzy.
So what's wrong with that?
I think it's awesome.
It's a human being calling yourself.
Pookie. That's okay, too.
Name an adult Pookie.
Pookie Wilson.
Oh, really? What do they do?
He was an NBA player.
I'm sorry.
Pookey Wilson? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Not Major League
baseball player. Pookie Wilson.
That's Mookie. Not Pookie.
Mookie Wilson.
Come on, Ross.
Pookie bets. Plays for the Dodgers.
Pookie Blaylock.
You done?
I think I'm out of mookies.
Come on.
Come on, that isn't an ordinary amount of nukees.
You did well, I mean, you put that together.
Yeah, so I sent a very nice message to Fazi on Sunday.
Now, again, I did it through Twitter, so I don't know, you know.
I'm trying to think of you, I'm looking to see in the last time you checked this Twitter account.
You know, one day, I sent it to them once, you know, I'm not happy with this.
He's probably, you get flooded with, I got like a thousand people in my DMs from China telling me that I look beautiful and I need to respond to them.
it's hard to check DMs on this stupid godforsaken site
I miss stuff from people all the time
then I sent out an email to Anwar Richardson
Is that name ring a bell to you?
Of course he was uh orange bloods right
Yeah so I'm trying to get something
I was gonna try to get a Aggie person
But I figured you'd be rude to that person
No that's I wouldn't be rude
Are you sure?
Why?
Because you're a Longhorn fan
You're not supposed to be polite
Of course you can be cordial
I'd like to get somebody on tomorrow that wouldn't have a dog in the fight.
Who would be a college football person?
Chris Gordy.
We had Sam Kahn on before.
No, Gordy doesn't care.
He's locked on SEC.
He's the perfect guest.
He hates the Aggies and the Longhorns.
That is true.
He's equally hating both of them.
That's actually fair.
So my attempt to get a preview of the game have gone unsuccessful.
I'm kind of disappointed to myself, but I'm trying.
Hook him horns
You can get Vince Young on the show
He'll be three hours late
Don't I know that
He might have been late
To the J-Barr and barbecue watch party
Was there one this weekend?
It was a couple weekends ago
But he was late
Zero surprise
He was very nice
He hung out
He took pictures with my brother
And my mother as well
Oh they went
Yeah, I was there.
Oh, you went?
Mm-hmm.
I've supported our sponsors, J-Barr and Barbecue.
Shout out to them.
So you went and said, I'll have a two meat plate,
and I want a picture with Vince.
We crushed like a giant tray of barbecue.
Hmm.
It was good.
I can't even remember what game where that was for.
Was that the Mississippi State?
No, it was the Kentucky game.
Oh, that was a nail biter, too.
It was overtime nail biter.
We like.
All right.
Let's, oh, we got, now, Gary took a shot at Ray.
Now, Ray wants to respond.
We have four on caller violence here.
Oh, this is actually a great bit.
I love this.
Ray, thank you for holding it.
Good morning to you.
What up?
First of all, Gary, you're interrupting me.
I'm trying to get off this dock and do jet skis in Biscayne Bay.
I'm going to send you a tweet.
I'm going to tweet you tonight, Madam.
or me on a jet skiing and biscuit.
Okay.
We can't have in-house fighting as Texans fans, Gary.
You sound like you're 230 years old.
Now, I know you're like an old vampire.
We can't have in-house fighting.
When you start buying my merchandise,
when you start paying for any Texas gear I get,
then you will be able to tell me how to talk about the Texans.
And I've been listening to Matt Thomas since 2011.
It's a caller-driven show, and I really love it.
You can't call in as a bully
and try to bully me into saying good things about the team
if I'm upset about them.
You're an old man, Gary.
You should understand what I'm saying.
And there's no need to try to call in
because you can only call in once a day.
So I'll hear you tomorrow.
And I know you're listening.
Let's end this right now.
I don't like AM Radio Beef and all that.
We're fellow Texans fans.
We should just hold hands
and hope they make the playoffs
and stop called
stop sitting on hole
calling in about me
that's a waste of time Gary
call in to have a hot take
about a sports team
not me
I'm about to hop on the jet skis
see you later
see you later
you know what Ray
you know what Ray
you know what Ray
you know what Ray
what Ray
what
that was some
that was some ball of stuff
I'm not going to lie
I hope he sends you that picture.
I want to see the picture of him.
Not only is he calling out Gary.
It's like, I'm about to go on my jet ski.
What are you going to be?
What are you going to be doing?
Gary.
Call her on caller.
Well, your band's that.
That's what he told him.
And he called him 250 years old, too, which would be the all-time record for most old, the oldest person in the world.
I think so, yeah.
Can you get to 110?
Is that a possibility?
I'm assuming you can.
Somebody's probably alive right now.
there's a hundred to ten people yeah they're like a couple of them oldest person living right now
is ethel catterham she's 116 and that's just the recorded ones
zero surprise her name is ethel by the way hello i'm ethel catherine
who was the last person born in america named ethel
i want to a girl well this woman is in the ukule
I had an affair with Winston Churchill.
I had a girl in high school named Ethel.
See, there you go.
Ethelian?
Did you really? Yeah.
I had Ethel.
Also, it was another one.
It was really old.
Is that short for Ethylene?
Isn't that an additive you put in your car, Ethelene?
Look at this guy.
Are you sure you went to school with a girl named Ethel?
I'm almost positive.
Yeah.
What do you mean you almost positive?
You did or you didn't?
I'm pretty sure I did.
I had her one class.
but you're not 100% sure.
I know it was old.
It's either Ethel or it was like...
Charlotte.
Here's the question.
Is there a woman alive today at the age of 25 years old named Ethel?
Yes.
Is she embarrassed by it?
She shouldn't be.
It's not...
Who cares?
If you had a terrible name, you'd be upset about it.
Why are you all fixated on people's names?
They didn't name themselves.
Ethel's not bad.
What's wrong with Ethel?
You wouldn't be pleased with that.
Ethel's fine.
It's not a name.
No, it's a sucky name.
It's a sucky name.
Yeah, it's a sucky name.
It's probably a family name.
It's probably an honor of some wonderful loving grandmother of hers.
Eh, move on.
Grandma died 80 years ago.
She's fine.
You would not want to be called a variety of names.
Like, uh, what did I say before?
Uh, would you want to be a Bertrand?
No.
Bertrand?
Yeah.
That sounds pretty sweet.
It does not.
Yeah.
Yeah, what's up?
No.
Call me buy some stately
Bertrand, yes, I'll have the foie grow
on the caviar.
Would you want to be an Oliver?
No. What's wrong with Oliver?
Hey, my cousin's name's Oliver.
Yeah, what's wrong with Oliver?
It's a bad name.
This is coming from the guy called Matt.
That's it.
Yeah, Matt's great.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
I was in the Bible.
That's very basic.
You know what? Basic works.
I think it's some other names
that you wouldn't want to be named.
It doesn't matter.
you're so weird
Austin
Austin
Austin
I wouldn't want to be
Bray Lynn
Bray Lynn yeah
it's pretty bad
all right
there you go
that's our name
conversation for the day
if your
if your name is Ethel
and you're under
60
call us and let us know
who you are
it's time for some gut
feelings
this is we make
our sports predictions
did we write the ones
down from last week
Rossie of course
we've only been
doing it every week
yeah but I feel like
I forget something
you know we forgot to do
last Thursday
what
The Rotten 5.
Oh, man, that's a shame.
What?
You forgot, Matt?
That is my fault.
Oh, man.
Well, we won't get it in this week.
Well, I have it on the schedule for tomorrow.
Because you didn't do it last week.
And Lord knows if I'm not there, you're not going to remember to do it.
Hmm.
We should do the Rotten 5 tomorrow.
It's such a good set.
No, next week.
I'm in vacation mode tomorrow.
Same.
It's already vacation mode of here.
How is the office today?
How is the sales?
It's ghost town.
I believe there was an incentive
a given
in order to put in a lot of work
in order to work from home
and then incentive was met.
So that's what I was told.
Okay.
Is Gordy in the office today?
Ghost town. I haven't seen Gordy.
Brian Erickson there.
You know the answer to all these questions.
Wow.
You're not here.
All that matters is that way.
We're putting in the work.
If the Rockets were home, I'd be at the office with you today.
That's true.
Thank you, Matt.
I appreciate you working.
Thank you.
You're still in Phoenix?
Yeah, we're leaving for San Francisco today in a couple of hours.
Are you going to San Francisco?
We're playing this long tomorrow, don't you know?
We have to.
We play real good San Francisco songs.
Actually, that one's kind of a jam.
I'll give it to you.
As far as the 60-year-old jams, you force us to
play on this song that's not one of the worst one on this show that's one of the worst
played is all um what is the george straight song about arizona
ocean front property in arizona yeah oh i love that song oh yeah ocean front
oh yeah i didn't ask you to sing it hey it's down we're gonna play it coming up in the next
i'd rather here sitting on the dock of the bay or i left my heart in san franciscoe
we're gonna play them all tomorrow tomorrow is nothing but san francisco's song in the show oh yeah
i like that and no rotten five which makes me sad
but that's fine.
That's good.
You're one.
All right.
Let's, uh, gut, gut feelings.
You any gut feelings?
Let us know.
713, 212, 5, 790.
7.13, 212.790.
Listen up, girls and boys.
They've been so appealing.
Cause Russ and Matt Thomas.
Yo, they got a gut feeling.
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas show.
Here we go.
Time for you to tell us what's going to happen in the world of sports.
And if you get the predictions, right, like Gary gave you 2319.
last week for the Texans over the bill.
You can call back and brag on them.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-21-5-7-90.
Before we make our predictions for this week,
Ross is going to tell us how we did from one week ago.
Yes, Matthew, one week ago,
you had Lane Kiffin staying at Ole Miss.
How are we feeling?
Mid?
It could happen.
I think, you know, he's posting a lot of these, like,
these self-help inspirational quotes about like finding yourself and not wanting too much and more
and meeting up where you're happy. If he's truly happy in Oxford and he's truly buying into whatever
he's posting, maybe he will stay there or he could just be trolling like he often is.
Now let me ask you this. I have been to Oxford, Mississippi one time. I've been to Baton Rouge 10
times. Does living in a city make that big of a difference to anybody in college football?
yes because if it does
Oxford's charming
Baton Rouge
what's wrong with Baton Rouge
it's fine
it's like the Burger King of Louisiana
wait
you mean you'll go there but you won't
you're like no one's going
I can't out wait to get in a Baton Rouge
I had a good time there
I do love the college atmosphere
I do love college towns
and boy that city does shut down when LSU plays
it's got casinos too
Does Oxford have casinos?
I don't think so.
It's been so long.
I guess what it is...
Not that Link Kiff is worried about that, but...
No, no.
But, you know, it's in Mississippi, and
Tunica can't be too far away from there, so...
I would rather live in Baton Rouge.
Okay.
Food's got to be better.
Yep.
The rap music's better.
The rap music is better.
You think you think Link Kippets go, man,
all things create equal, where can I get the better...
I think so.
Bat Rouge
Duh
I mean Chimes
Chimes is a wonderful restaurant
I am Team Chim's good
Chim's really good
You probably get unlimited
Basing Rains
Yeah
But that place is overrated
Chimes good
I'll even say
Raising Cains
Overrated
What
What's up
That's blasphemy
All right
Then you also had the Texans
Losing by at least
7 points to the Buffalo Bills
That's why I'm not making a prediction tomorrow.
That's fine.
I lose every time.
All right.
Whatever.
And that's all I wrote down for you.
I had the Texans covering the five and a half.
Good for you.
And then of course, by Thursday I had them pulling the upset, which they did.
And I had Kyle Tucker over seven and a half years.
I think I just put that down.
I don't know why.
I was being rude.
Just because you wanted to pour salt on my wounds.
You're right.
It was a twist of the knife.
That's unfortunate.
Yeah.
Jonathan Allen had the Rockets on a seven-game winning streak while they lost to the Denver Nuggets.
He also had the Kansas City Chiefs losing to the Indianapolis cult.
He was so close.
You're a Chiefs hitter.
When I got to overtime, I turned it off.
I said, okay.
So close.
Such a hater for the Chiefs.
And that's the gut feelings from last week.
All right.
Okay, so gut feelings going around.
I'm going to say by this time next week
Jake Myers is no longer an astro
I hate to say that because that's your guy
this time next week
yep
okay that's fine
that makes sense
it makes too much sense
especially if they really believe in
Zach Cole and Jacob Melton
which I don't know that they do
I don't know and boy
Cam Smith still getting that lot of that
I mean if you need a glove
can't hit much. Jacob Melton's a good option.
So, I mean, he can replace Jake Myers
there. And he's a lefty bat,
which is going to provide more value.
Yeah.
All right. I'm still going with Jake Myers.
Not that I want him gone, because I like Jake.
And by the way, you hate Jake.
No, I love Jake.
I am a, I am not a president of the fan club,
but I am a, I'm a follower of it.
I've contributed to the GoFundMe account.
Whatever.
All right. I'm going with a double upset week, baby.
The Houston Texans will go up to Indianapolis and win and beat the Colts.
Wow.
And your Texas Longhorns in their second biggest rivalry game will take on the
undefeated Texas
A&M Aggies
and despite their struggles
against the run game
and running quarterbacks
that does have me a lot worried.
Yes. They'll find a way
and they'll pull off the upset
at home in front of a hundred
thousand plus. You know, some stadiums can't even
get 30. It's going to be
100,000 plus
raucous Longhorn fans
at DKR
and they're going to pull the upset as well.
Texas and Texans win.
What's up?
Aggies, you want to respond to that right now?
Your team has a chance to go for a perfect season.
Go to the SEC championship game.
By the way, do we know who's playing in the SEC championship game yet?
No.
Well, the Aggies right now.
And then there's three one-lost teams?
Is it Georgia?
I can't keep track.
Georgia Ole Miss and somebody else.
Yeah.
And this is another question for Chris Gordy.
Okay, here we go.
Here are my guts.
I'm going to keep my laying kiff in an Ole Miss.
I think I'm going to lose that one, but I'm going to stay with it.
Alabama.
Alabama with one loss, Ole Miss with one loss.
Georgia Bulldogs have one loss.
And after this week, Aggies with one loss.
Alabama has two losses, no?
Two conference losses.
Oh, okay, okay.
Cougars beat Baylor by at least 10 this week.
Hashtag rebound game.
Hashtag undefeated on the road.
Let's go.
You know what?
I'll make a text and prediction right.
You're such a fraud. I love it.
Go ahead.
I don't even know if we're on the air at this point.
7.13-212-5-790.
Can you hear us?
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
If you're alive, you can call the show.
Just give us an eye blink or like a bad phone could disconnect.
Just let us know that we're on and you hear us.
713-212-1-2-5-7-90
I don't know
All right
I'm gonna go
I'm not ready
I can't do this yet
I'm not
I'll have it by the end of the segment
I promise
Jonathan what do you got for your gut this week
Wow
What a pump-fake
I think Arch Manning's throwing two
interceptions this weekend
It's my first one.
And then wins that game.
Oh, my gosh.
And then I want to settle.
Come on, you can't let the cult win.
Hullabaloo connect.
What does that even mean?
I don't even know.
It's like gibberish.
And then I want to settle.
This is my last time, my final time.
Chiefs lose to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
And I'm sticking off.
Beed the Cowboys.
Right that down.
I can't look.
I'm bullshit.
You know what?
I'm not a Cowboys fan.
Never been my life?
Cowboys.
Please, it's your year.
Oh, come on.
You're such a Kansas City hater.
What did Travis Kelsey ever do to you?
It's a Chiefs by three is the line for those playing at home.
What's what's what Brown ever do to you?
You see how they play with the Colts?
Do you see all this?
They're the most floppy, whiny team I've ever seen in my 23 years living.
And I've watched a lot of a ball.
Colts 26, Texans 24.
now remember when i give you texas predictions they're typically wrong
even when i predict them to win they're wrong okay i will uh i will give you a final
score on the texans oh you know what i'm going to flip yours kind of 26
22 Texans okay you had a pregnant pause there though i know 22 is a weird number
No, it's good, though, because we had 19 last week.
I didn't know.
We had that anticipated.
Jet.
D'Amico Ryan's like to kick so many field goals.
That's why I always pick weird numbers for the Texans, too.
Yeah, that's true.
But I about this one?
Let's see here.
Something about the, oh, Jonathan Taylor does not rush for 100 yards.
Ooh, that is a bold one.
I kind of like that, though.
But you still have the Colts winning and scoring.
26. Yes.
Hmm. Yes.
Okay. I think
I think that
the passing game is going to be much
more effective this week. Danny Jones.
Yeah. I think Danny Jones has
this leg is something to watch out for.
All right. Yeah. Jonathan Taylor
less than 100. I think
the tight ends for the Colts
one of them will reach the end zone
this week. Did I
lock in Justin Verlander as an astro?
I don't think I did in the last couple of weeks. Let me write
that now. I have a gut. I'll keep it as a gut feeling for sure.
Okay. You have, uh, did you say that before?
He's an Astro. Yes. Yeah, he's already at the, uh, cool thing.
I got Myers traded by next week. Um, Rockets, Warriors, I'm going to stay away from that
because I just hate the Warriors more than life itself. And there's no Kevin Durant.
Mm-hmm. And I'm not going to predict the Cougars because last year, the Cougars did not
do very well in this player's era tournament. Didn't mean anything, but they didn't, you know,
They didn't do one yesterday, beating Syracuse, so I got that.
Playing Rick Barnes and Tennessee volunteers tonight.
I got a prediction for the Warriors game.
Yes, sir.
Dremont Green Flagrant Review at some point in the game.
Is he going to play?
I thought he was hurt.
Oh, is he hurt?
Dang it.
Well, man, still could happen.
He could get away.
He could be flaggated review during the game.
You know, he's getting in a beef with Kenyon.
and Martin on Twitter?
He's going to be with everybody.
By the way, here are the SEC title game scenarios.
Oh, Jesus.
Here we go.
AM wins, they're in, or Alabama and Ole Miss loss.
Alabama is in with a win.
Georgia gets in with an Alabama loss or an A&M loss.
Ole Miss gets in with a win plus an A&M loss plus an Alabama.
Well, let's just see what happened.
Let's just do this afterwards.
Jesus.
Well, you know, we are.
official home of SEC football.
Look at Gordy. I mean, Gordy is so
into us. I love Gordy. He just sends
this stuff like, we were talking about there's nobody at the office
today, and he had to come back and say, I was there yesterday.
I was here Monday. That's fine.
Gordy can do it. If there anybody at the office, I'm not worried about it's Chris
Gordy. Clinton, on the other hand, I'm concerned about.
Not Gordy.
He's the executive producer of this show.
He is.
And can he get us a good Texas versus A.
am guests, since I'm 0 for two of my guests looking for us.
Let's just get Gordion.
I like him.
I'm a little bigger.
Wow.
You just had locked on Colts.
You can't get locked on SEC?
What a hater.
Shout out to Trey, listening all show every day, benefit of retirement.
Trey, thank you very much.
Trey, you don't look old.
How old are you, Trey?
He's got black hair.
Now, he could be dying as here.
You never know these things, but that's good.
We do.
We do well.
We always checking up on everybody's appearance.
Well, because I want to make sure we're
We keep in demo.
They're so weird.
I'm not weird.
By the way, no one's called yet with the name Mildred or Agnes.
It's under the age 25 or Ethel.
Names are long gone.
All right.
Gut feelings coming up.
Are you?
You've had a cold for like two weeks.
What's going on?
I can take this cough.
I almost took nighttime medicine,
which would have been terrible for the show,
especially since I've been pounding coffee.
Don't do that.
All right, 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
If you've got any gut feelings, hell, if you're out there,
7-13-2-1-2-5-7-90, it is the Matt Thomas show.
E-Mey-A-Docke is going to join us a little over an hour from now here on Sports Talk 790.
All right, last call for gut feelings you got one.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-9-9-7-1-2-1-2-2-1-2-2-2-1-2-1-2.
5-7-9-0. Rockets off today. We'll be playing the hated Golden State Warriors tomorrow night in San Francisco.
College basketball tonight has the Houston Cougars in action against the Tennessee Volunteers.
Your beloved Longhorns, are they in the, are they playing Shamanade today in the secondary round of this big Maui invitational?
No, I think they're playing University of Hawaii Kona.
that could be a tricky matchup
you never know these things
I don't know
that was a good pull by the University of Hawaii
Kona
I don't even know who you all are playing
are we carrying the game that I am sure
I don't know what's happening
so bad
we are playing Shamanat I knew it
so bad
they don't even have a record
it says Texas 4 and 2 versus Shamanah
no record
they're just
they're just
floating around in space.
The matchup predictor at ESPN
says you have a 99% chance
of winning. I hope they pull it
off. Oh my God, that is hysterical.
Oh, Lordy.
Why can't? Yeah,
there's no page for Shamanaut.
No, there's no record. They don't
even really exist. So bad.
They're pulling the SFA.
The silver swords.
Maybe the Longhorns can go play that school
on 59 near Richmond Rosenberg.
area that'd be good man non-con oh yeah that one that sFA played what were they called the
proctor school or whatever something like that goodness it's like the made-up school that
quarterback that's going to uv h is from hey was that called the spring school of the whatever
well it's it's our own version of the i mg academy how about that you school of science and
technology or whatever what was it called no it was something totally made up yeah what's that guy's
Keeshawn Henderson or something.
Henderson, yeah, number one quarterback in the country.
So I'm presuming we're paying him and we're going to pay...
Legacy the School of Sports Sciences.
I would try to get my kids to go there and they wouldn't go.
Yeah, sure.
Their fax machine was broken.
Legacy the sport...
Legacy the school of sport sciences.
Yes.
It's a highly acclaimed a college preparatory school.
Because you have to have it because you need to go.
You're going to a tier one school like the University of Houston.
You've got to be ready to go.
So there you have.
When did the school open?
Don't do any, don't do a search on this.
I don't want the end results of this.
I'd rather just presume it's awesome.
Wikipage doesn't say when it opened.
Well, it's, it's a newbie.
It's a, it's a thriver.
on the custom of greatness.
What district has said?
It opened in 2018.
It's in district 36.3A or
5A, something like that.
I'm complaining.
You know, you mean to tell me
that every one of the University of Texas
alumni players are coming from
thoroughbred high school?
I didn't say that.
We weren't talking about Texas.
Maybe everybody's
education leads are different, Ross.
By the way, I was in Ohio.
last week, and they passed a bill, I think, or they were thinking about passing a bill for
NIL's student, for high school players.
I thought that was already done deal, or is that in other states?
Six states don't have it at this point.
Ohio was one of them.
Oh, my gosh.
Well.
Because we've seen how NIL has made everything awesome and Cush in college.
I'd like it's my little bringing to the high school level.
Hey, man.
The kids can get a little money.
Good for them.
Mm-hmm.
man do we have it in texas by the way do we i think we do have it in texas correct if you get nil if you
wanted to i believe so i went to a i went to a high school game recently and they were they were
endorsing they were all telling what their favorite order from what a burger was so i think so
that that would be the epitome of that yeah for sure i would do it for i would do it for i would
go to a different school for free uber rides i'd go with the number two with uh cheese and grilled
halipinos. No tomatoes.
Love tomatoes.
See, the problem is fast food.
I like tomatoes, but sometimes the fast food
tomatoes are very bad and they just bogged down
the sandwich with bad flavor and soggyness.
That is true. I used to cut, when I was
working at McDonald's, we just cut tomatoes at 5 o'clock
in the morning before the rest of the years open.
Yeah, exactly. As I'm saying.
Yeah, well, we'd put them in their fridge.
Wouldn't them sit down there in the heat?
Those McDLTs that make themselves,
Ross. It's a great F.
Tomatoes. And when I make burgers,
at home, I use, I, I slice my own
tomatoes, man.
All right.
Let's get to the news at noon. You want to?
Sure, I not. Please. Let's do that.
This half hour has been a complete utter disaster.
I think it's been great.
I don't know.
I think people are.
Was it light, now you hardly had to go anywhere.
Was traffic, has traffic been pretty easy the last couple days or has been pretty
hectic?
I'm not the one to ask. I've got a four-minute commute.
Today was pretty hectic.
I'm not a lot.
Yesterday it was pretty chill.
Okay.
There's a lot of construction going on right now.
So much.
Does Houston ever finish their construction?
Here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to go get another cup of coffee.
Oh, my gosh.
Make it 48 ounces.
This is bad.
We're going to play some highlights.
Ross, you will do the news at noon,
and when you're done with the news or in the middle of the news of noon,
when I'm back, I will tell you I'm back.
Okay.
Sure, why not?
All right.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Astros came together.
The Astros, the Rockets came together last night.
You'll hear about it next.
So we approach high noon on Sports Talk 790.
Rockets win.
Tonight here in Phoenix, it's your Rockets 114 and the Suns 92.
Ross, I'm properly caffeinated.
We're down the home stretch, halfway done on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Ross, I ran into some assistant coaches with a team downstairs getting that cup of coffee.
They're like, Matt, are you okay?
I said, Matt, I'm doing great.
Nothing wrong with me at all.
Just get me a second 24 hours.
Why are you shaking so much?
And then I said, they said, I just went downstairs and the coaches said, hey, Matt, you're doing okay?
I said, yeah, I'm having my second 24 hours.
I got nothing wrong with me.
Did I just repeat myself?
I'm sorry.
Jeez, are you all right?
I'm doing great.
Are we on, is there some kind of issue?
No, no, I was just teasing.
Okay.
You know what's time for, don't you?
No.
Another cup of coffee?
And the news, the dude.
What do you got at Sports RV?
Yes, Matthew, all the do's a dude.
You just heard the highlights there.
Your Houston Rockets, no Kevin Durant, no problem.
114 to 92 over the Phoenix Suns.
Defense holding the Suns to under 100, and it would have been even less.
If Dylan Brooks weren't going off, he had 29 points on 11 of 22 shooting.
But the Rockets were led by Amin Thompson, 28 points.
How about eight assists and seven rebounds as well?
Showing off the athleticism on the National Peacock Broadcast.
Alpi Shingoon with a quiet 18, 5, and 5.
But he was 8 to 14 from the field, so he had a pretty solid game as well.
In A.A. Ron Holiday, big off the bench, 6 of 10 from the 3 point line.
Add it all up, Rockets get the victory.
11 and 4 on the season
Matt. Now, of course, I know you're
a standings watcher, guys, so let's go ahead and do this.
Can I do it, please? Go ahead.
Rockets right now would open up the playoffs
as the four seat against the San Antonio Spurs.
But the playoffs don't start today.
No, they don't start for approximately five months.
Sounds ridiculous, isn't it?
You are ridiculous, yes. You know what? I'm glad you said that.
Don't say I sound ridiculous.
I am obsessed with standings.
I will never change.
I look at the AFC playoff picture for the Texans at least six times a day,
thinking things are going to change and they really don't.
The only thing that doesn't change either is the fantasy football.
Congratulations, the Houston Toros,
the nice win yesterday.
Yeah, as I'm back in care of Cal's Roughwriters.
Basically finished me off.
I'm done, man.
Four and eight now, no chance to make the playoffs, unfortunately.
Yeah, I think there's no chance.
Yeah, here's a quick press conference from Cal's Rough Riders and team governor, Ross.
Yeah, you know, it started with some bad decisions at the top of the draft.
We took Saquan Barclay over Jemir Gibbs, and that was the death blow.
He went off for 50 points at Guinness against a strangely poetic there.
Obviously didn't help that Malik neighbors went down, had some other injuries as well throughout the season.
Brock Purdy didn't play the entire year.
not like he's been good when he has been playing
so got to go back to the drawing board
we've had some issues at the top of the draft
and we're looking forward to resetting
for next year and getting better
we are not going to win a championship
for a four straight year but we're still proud
of what we've accomplished in this league
and if we don't get our NIL money up
we're going to get losing our job really quickly
you know it's not
realistic to think I was going to win four straight
championships you know God if it was
I was really going to retire but now I've got the
juices flown again the total
are back.
We thought we'd let somebody else win this year.
But whatever.
All right, anyways, let's keep with the NBA real quick, actually.
Oklahoma City Thunder, best in basketball, in net rating, by the way.
The Rockets number two.
How about the Detroit Pistons 13 straight wins tying a franchise record?
The other teams in their history of won 13 straight games have all won the NBA championship.
That would be the 1990 and 2004.
Detroit Pistons, Matt, they were horrible last year.
They are now 15 and 2.
Are we putting the contender status on the Detroit Pistons,
or is it still too early?
No, we are.
It's going to come down to, I think, three teams.
Detroit, Milwaukee,
and who else in the east?
I'm trying to think.
I'm looking at the standings.
The bucks have lost five in a row.
They're eight and ten.
The Raptors have been good.
They've won eight in a row.
the heat of won five in a row.
They just got Tyler Hero back.
Who?
Donovan McNabb doesn't win big playoff series.
I'm not buying a movie.
He got to the Super Bowl with Terrell Owens on a broken leg.
What did I say?
Donovan Mitchell.
McNabb.
Geez.
I'm not buying it on Toronto.
I'm not buying it on Miami.
New York, I think it's good.
Atlanta's mid.
Philadelphia's been a surprise.
Sir, what are we doing here?
We break it down Eastern Conference basketball.
What is wrong with us, Rossi?
I think the three.
best teams in basketball to the thunder nuggets and rockets, but the Pistons are starting
to enter that conversation.
Yep, that's good.
All right, moving along here, and all the news at noon here on Sports Talk 790.
How about some baseball news?
The Red Sox acquiring former Sy Young finalist, Sunny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals,
according to Jeff Passon of ESPN.
Sonny Gray, 36 years old.
Also, the Cardinals sending $20 million to cover
Sunny Gray's salary, which will pay him $35 million this year.
Remember when the Astros were looking to go for Sunny Gray?
And the price tag was way too uncomfortable for the local nine.
Yes, it was.
But Red Sox is getting better in the arms race in the American League.
Boston Red Sox
Receives Sunny Gray and Cash
Cardinals getting
prospects or getting Brandon Clark
and Richard Fitz
I don't think either of those
I think at least Clark is a major week
right? I don't know about Fitz
And that was the news at noon
By the way shout out to the Cougars
Minos Auxan, Emmanuel Sharp
with 26 points apiece last night
Cougars beat Syracuse
in overtime 78 to 74
And oh actually one more quick note
in the news of noon, Matt.
Please.
Rick Fox is running for a legislative seat in the Bahamas.
Of all places you could run for office,
Bahamas has to be on the short list, right?
I've never been, so I can't speak to it,
but I don't think people go, God, that's horrible.
Yes, but his candidacy is
coming as the area is
struggling with a high-profile corruption
case and an influx of
of people entering the country illegally
an ongoing recovery from Hurricane Dorian,
the Category 5 storm that hit in September of 2019.
I gotta be honest,
Rick Fox is one of those guys that women stop in their tracks
that look at him.
It's disgusting, actually.
What happened to his e-sports?
He had Fox e-sports or something like that.
Did that fold?
Most of those esports have gone away.
Yeah, Echo Fox.
No, they're still thriving.
They're not thriving.
Not to thrive.
Just because you're not paying attention
to something.
But you're not thriving.
It's not thriving.
Somebody once told me it was going to be
as popular as NASCAR.
I'm like,
I don't think so.
Well, they're wrong about that.
It's too fractured.
There's too many games.
But, I mean,
there's a lot of popular
e-sports
entities that are doing well.
Still has a chance to get that,
but still getting millions of followers.
No, it's not going to happen.
There's too many games.
There's Rocket League,
and there's Dota,
and then there's League of Legends
is the biggest one, right?
Yes.
And there's Apex Legends,
call of duty.
It's just too many
different.
things. Too many different genres. I told you that one time I was in Vegas and there were about
3,000 people on the floor at MGM Casino and I'm like, what is going on? Is there somebody
celebrity? No, there are a bunch of people watching people play video games. I'm like,
you know what, you got to get a life. Yeah, there's still people doing that.
It was also 10 years ago, too. It's people who are the best in the world at a game you can play,
like the NBA. It's people who are the best in the world that again, you can go out in
the hoop and shoot a hoop. It's professional madden's well. It's okay.
You can get some shots up, but nobody's going to watch you.
You can play video games at home, but nobody's going to watch you if you're not even good.
Yeah.
Ryan Holland's a huge Madden 2K watcher.
I'll see.
There you go.
We'll be at a nice five-star diamond restaurant eating steak and potatoes and having a nice glass of your favorite Vino,
and all of a sudden, boom, he's got a Madden game on his phone.
I think LeBron's like top in the world in Madden.
Is that true?
Yeah, he's like, I don't know last season, he was like ranked 15 or something.
What?
Did you see who, speaking of a video game,
did you see who a man Thompson was going to choose in the first pick of his NBA 2K draft?
Wait, is this true?
LeBron James was a top 100 player in Madden, 25 on rank?
That is actually insane.
There are millions and millions of players.
In Madden, 2004, I was super proud of myself.
Like, I still brag about this to this day.
I crack the top 10,000.
And I was like, man, I'm a bad man.
I cracked the top.
He's top 100.
Is this true?
That's insane.
Matt, we need to get you on a game.
We need to put a controller in your hand.
Millions and millions of people play this game.
If you are top 100, that's crazy.
You know what?
I'm a top 100 player in pole position.
There's no way.
Impact, man.
No way
Oh, okay
Yo, hell yeah, I am
Miss Pac-Man especially
I got to get to my mom
That was the reaction times
I've probably eroded over the years
You don't know
Not what the coffee you got on right now
Yeah, it's true
You don't know at all
I'm a great pole position driver
A great Pac-Man player
This is actually mind-boggling
I'm blown away right now
A huge Frogger player
But I could play if I needed to
And I'm exceptional in the game
called Pong
Hashtag quick reaction
time. How much does he play?
You're obsessed with this
LeBron James. I didn't know you. No, this is
actually, I know you don't care
Matt, but Jonathan knows, is it crazy?
Yeah, I thought you knew that. I was a big, I think it was last year. He hit that.
So basically anything LeBron James does
in terms of skill and
or athleticism, he's really good at.
That's pretty crazy.
Yeah, you got to be your own head coach when you play the game like that.
Change defenses and all that stuff.
wow you know what another radio show on the marketplace talking about lebrine james being a top hunter
except this one god love us uh all right that's that's the elongated edition of the
thank you no by way you answer my question who did a man thompson choose for his number one player
on the NBA 2k uh to be or to play to play to on his team a Kevin Durant
wimby that's smart
adam clinton did not like that
lost the family he's hurt with a calf injury
so yeah and you know attendance is part of the grade
1218 of the matthomas show at ross 713
212 5790 email doca is going to join us in 40 minutes
we've got an mMA fighter coming up at 130
houston kid we'll get to that as well
and nfl ross's NFL rewind at 120 today
what is the most intriguing thing that happened over the week
NFL Slate will not the week
W-E-E-E-K
weak NFL Slate
7-13-212-5-7-9 if you want to
chime in 7-1-3-212-5-7-9
a little bit of sad news
not sad but like oh
are we really going to do this news
the college football playoff committee
has pushed their deadline back to
December the first to determine whether or not they should expand
to 16 teams
they're still arguing, Ross, about how many automatic spots per conference and who gets them and how that's determined.
Just keep it at 12.
It's not going to happen.
Keep it at 12, Ross.
Just keep it at 12.
The disease of more.
Like, I want to have a conversation about this right now.
Is there something in sports that we have too much of now?
that has hurt the sport.
That's kind of an open-ended question.
So I'm just rattle your head about this.
Over-exposure?
Hmm.
Now, not necessarily television.
Because look, but I'm saying,
is there something we have too much of
that it was better back in the day?
You could say a 17th regular season game,
although that's more athletes.
I don't think fans particularly care.
In fact, it gives you another week to gamble
and play fantasy football.
So that's not one of those things I would.
news is there something we have seen more of in sports that frankly was better the way it used to
be now you don't normally get a lot of that because let's use the NFL schedule as an example
you know in the 70s they would play 14 regular season games in six exhibition games and
that was a disaster they bumped to 16 dropped the depreciation to four in baseball there was
a generation of people that watched 154 that got to 162 in my entire life
If the NBA has always played 82, so I don't know anything less than that.
That's too many, though.
The NCAA tournament used to be 48 teams.
They added to 64, and they went to 68.
There's going to be a talk of them eventually going to 96, you would think.
That's too much.
But that hasn't happened yet.
I mean, is there something currently right now?
I'll give you a great example.
This one I thought of right as little as I'm talking this out.
There are too many bowl games.
Too many bowl games.
in our lifetime
there's too many
boxing
sanctioning bodies
and belts
yep
I go with that
and maybe too many
weight classes
yeah
because really
what are the weight
class separated by
four to five pounds
now it feels like
depends yeah
the lower you go
the higher you go
then it's
after middle weight's
160 then
light heavy's
but then they added
a new weight class
they called it
Bridger weight
Have you ever heard of Bridgerweight?
I don't even know what that is.
It's between heavyweight and cruiser weight, I think.
Yeah.
Because so Cruise heavyweight, you know, back in the day,
they didn't have so much access to food.
So if you're over 200 pounds, you're a heavyweight.
Right.
These days, the Bridgerweight, they did 200 and 224.
Is there still super heavyweight?
No, they're super heavyweight in the UFC.
I don't know how much they fight that.
I think it's over 265.
There's a heavyweight limit in UFC.
I think it's 265.
Okay.
And in boxing, there's no limit.
So you'd have any, if you're 201 pounds, you're a heavy weight, but also if you're
260 pounds, you're a heavy weight, which is just ridiculous.
So they've created Bridger weight.
So we have too many weight classes.
We have too many bowl games.
Like when I was a kid, and you need to hit me every time I say this.
That's okay.
I mean to do that.
Mac and my day.
But there were like 12 bowls.
and if your team got to a bowl, it was a big freaking deal.
Now, every college team that plays Division I football,
all they do is race to get to six wins
because they know they're going to play in a bowl game.
And 90% of the bowls,
no one gives two craps about.
In fact, they lose money for their respective leagues
and individual teams.
And it's even worse for the playoff now.
Because think about it, and I don't know what the minimum payoff is, but it used to be $750,000.
Used to be each of the, and maybe I'm guessing it's probably bumped up in recent years.
But you'd go, let's say you're Eastern Michigan, and you're going to play in the New Orleans Bowl against, I don't know, Louisiana Tech.
If you're Eastern Michigan and you go to this bowl game, you get $750,000.
You have to buy a certain number of tickets that's required, and if you don't sell your
tickets, you owe the bowl back.
Then you have to pay for
your expenses, and then you've got to
split it up with the rest of the teams in your conference
that part of that 750. Now, if you're
in a mega SEC conference or Big 12
or Big 10 or ACC, you're
not sweating this, but if you're a Mac team
and you've got three
teams going to a bowl game that are only making
$750,000, $800,000, and you've got
to spend money, and you know that Eastern
Michigan's not going to travel 7,000
people to New Orleans
on a Tuesday or a mid-week bowl,
game in Mobile, Alabama, those are losses.
Now, again, you can also sell it as, hey, we went to a ball game, we put an extra game,
and the kids enjoy the experience, and whatnot, but it just, it dilutes it.
And it's almost like every year when the bowl schedule comes out, there's always that
list of five bowl games you have to absolutely watch, and then there's a list of 20
bowl games you could, you can stay far away from.
Too many bowl games.
But again, how do you go tell a kid that,
Toledo that went 7 and 5 this year.
You can't go to a bowl game.
A lot of them,
they're opting out and hitting the portal anyways.
That's right.
Like, I'm going to assume that
when the Cougars play,
whatever bowl game there,
and there could be probably a half dozen players
that don't play because they want to make sure they protect their draft status.
I'm looking at current bowl payout.
Is this true?
Bahamas bowl's only get 225 Gs?
That's, I thought the minimum payout was $750.
I thought it would be more, yeah.
When you said that, that sounded right.
Hmm.
You know, our Birmingham Bowl, 1.3 mil.
That's not terrible.
You look at that.
What's it?
Where's the old Texas Bowl?
6.4 million for Texas Bowl.
Hey, let's go, you have a man.
Let's go, big 12.
What's the Alamo Bowl payout?
Just asking for a friend.
8.2 mil.
Ooh.
Valero is pointing up the cash.
Our gas prices are going to go up, but you know what?
You got a bowl game.
Oh, it used to be the Builders Square Alamo Bowl.
Ross, you have to go with me to San Antonio for the Cougars play there.
That is your bowl game.
I show you, yeah, show you the ropes.
If there's anybody that knows that stadium as well as you, it knows that bowl, it's you in that stadium.
You've been there more recently than I have.
Don't bring that up.
I forget what game it was for.
I do, too.
1232 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Ime Adoka in one half hour.
You may join us at 713-212-5-790.
If you missed the Creighton-Baylor call from yesterday,
the radio call of a very controversial play
is worthy of a listen again.
You'll hear it next.
1233 on Sports Talk 790.
Ross, I have to protect the innocent.
Two different e-mailers of the show.
The category was,
We were bringing up as what is too much
compared to what there was yesterday year.
Two different people said there were too many
WMBA games.
If you're paying attention to zero,
does it matter how many there are?
Too many streaming services.
But you're asking about sports.
Yeah.
Oversaturated sports.
It's too many NBA regular season.
games but I mean that's just the way it's always been I guess I highly object to that
I'm going to just be brutally honest with you yeah but that's because you're being selfish
you mean I'd be selfish about something like that oh sorry did I say that out loud
I think we heard you belly laugh and cackle at the same time I'm supposed to be
internal monologue now if you love betting on sports the bowl games are right up your
battle you usually got something every single night yeah that's true but i mean come on if you're
betting on like the toledo rockets versus north texas or something
don't sleep on north texas they could sneak into the uh cfp by the way
that's stupid whatever any team not in the top 12 should not make the not toe and i'm not
saying that because texas is close i've been saying this for years i've been consistent
have you talk with your your longhorn friends if you beat a and m can you get in or
is it too much?
There are longhorn people who are arguing
they should be in. I am not one
of those people. I say
let the chips fall where they may.
If you lose to automatic bids, that's tough,
but it is what it is. Don't lose
to Florida.
And at least, I think if they had
showed better against Georgia, their ranking would be
better. It was 35 to 10. I mean,
you got your ass whooped. I think
the Florida loss was bad.
I think that Georgia ass kicking may have been
worse.
yeah i don't know it's all subjective but every time i look at somebody on these
projections things i always see first four out and i see university texas and every single one
of them that's okay i'm just curious if there is a scenario that if a bunch of teams in front
lose could you really sneak in as maybe that number 10 they might you know that that texas brand
i'm not saying it should matt carries a little sway though with the pollsters oh you think
weeks ago? He's like, oh, yeah, I'm watching
to you text to get their ass kick. By the way, they beat
A&M, maybe they got a shot. You never know.
You never know.
And also, I mean, if
it's, it could depend
on how the game goes, too. I don't think, I don't
think Texas is like a blow it out A&M or anything. I think it's
to be a close game. I did call for the upset, but it's
like a two and a half point spread. All right. If we
don't get anybody better, we're going to have Gordy on tomorrow.
We're looking for an upgrade, but we'll take Gordy.
That's so rude.
That I said out loud?
That was internal.
What's wrong with better?
He knows both teams.
He's good on air.
Yeah.
I wonder if he's going to the game.
He probably put in for a credential.
I wonder if he got accepted.
I think he's been having issues with the Texas PR folks over the years.
Because they're Bush League.
Yeah, they can be snooty.
I'm with you.
John Bianco, you're snooty.
I called you by direct name.
Hope you enjoyed that.
Dang.
Get them, Maddie.
Get them.
I'm sorry.
First of all,
Every PR team is a little holier than now,
but certain, some more than others in Texas.
Oh, you and Texas are the two worst.
Really?
And A&M, you're not much better,
saying you can't talk to Mike Elkoe,
ask him a question about whether or not you've got a contract extension.
You can't tell people what you can't ask.
By the way, speaking of that, I need a quick ruling on this.
And we'll go to, is it Dolce?
Is that who that is on line two there?
I can't remember.
I know that.
Doiss?
What is that?
I don't know.
That's a question for Jonathan.
So yesterday, I don't, this is how it was going on.
Oh, he's already saved?
Yeah.
Okay.
Quick ruling, Ross, we're at the availability yesterday,
and Kevin Durant is out with personal reasons for tonight's,
yesterday's game and Wednesday's game.
E. Madoka was asked by this crotchety old Phoenix reporter.
Can you explain why Kevin Durant is not playing?
And he said, personal reasons.
The guy said, well, that's going to lead to a lot of speculation.
and took point one off the clock for him in to say well people can speculate all they want to
and it's none of your business it was a very awkward frankly inappropriate moment it's not like
he's going to be gone for a month the rockets have already said it's going to be last night
and tomorrow he's expected to be back with the team sunding in utah against the jazz
if personal reasons or personal reasons it is what it is
I mean, we don't have to tell the whole world everything.
There isn't enough people around this world that are dying to know what Kevin Durant's personal issues are, if there's anything.
Could be good, it could be bad.
I don't even know what they are.
I don't really particularly care.
Yeah, I mean, I would be curious, but if it doesn't want to be disclosed, and that's, I think the first question from the reporter is fine.
Hey, do you want to shed any more light on what's happening with Kevin Durant?
And then you say no, and you move on with your life.
I'm saying it's, oh, you're leaving it open for people to speculate.
Speculate what?
So what?
Who cares?
That's right.
I was, I...
You think he's ducking the Phoenix Suns?
I would imagine he wants nothing more than any other game on the 82 games schedule to play against the Phoenix Suns.
And Golden State?
Yes, seriously.
Yeah, I mean, I get if it's Charlotte and Washington.
He is a competitor of the highest order.
I just thought it was...
Now, if he misses 10 games or something in a row, then that's fair.
But the Rockets got out in front of whatever the...
situation is and said it's two games we'll see him sunday in salt lake city and we're moving on
you just say i hope everything's okay with kevin durent and his family and let's move on with our
lives i mean what was he supposed to say you know he got a really great fare to turks and kekos want
to get there early maybe i just thought it was i was like 75 years old he had one of those
old school hats it looked like he hadn't shaved he looked like he had to wash his hair in a month
probably an all-NBA voter
it was kind of just kind of a douchy move I thought
and again I wish all of us in life didn't have personal stuff
I wish we could do our jobs every single day
and not have anything that would interfere with any of those things
and whatever he's going with or whatever he's going through
or whatever it is
they were out in front they could have just said oh he's not feeling well
but there's something going on and let him be
1243 it's a matt thomas show with ross
713-212-5-790.
Emei-Doka to join us in about 15 minutes.
We'll go to Vince and the Dolce next on 790.
Eme-Doka coming up at the top of the hour.
A little MMA conversation at 130.
In between that, Ross's NFL Rewind at 120.
To the phones we go, Vince is with us on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Vince, thank you for holding him.
Good afternoon to you.
Hey, good afternoon, guys.
First of all, Ross, I saw your...
Chili on the Instagram, man, that looks good, dude.
Thank you, Vince.
Anyway, it was good.
I can turn on the, on the too many bowl games,
and it brought me to something I saw recently where I don't know what it was,
but basically some one of these football teams had won a bowl game,
no-name bowl game, and it said,
such and such bowl game champions, you know, champions.
I said, how can you be a champion, a six-and-six team,
against another six and six team and claim
yourself to be a champion of anything.
So, just something I thought
about. I don't get.
That is not abnormal.
Unfortunately, Vince, when you win a game,
they just say, they don't say you're the winner of.
They call you the champion, so.
It is, it's just a way to put it on.
It's not a championship, but they call them champions.
Yeah. I see it all the time.
I'm with Vince, though.
It feels a little participation trophy-ish.
Exactly.
That's what 80% of the bowls are.
are, wouldn't you agree? Yeah, I mean, we're the Popeyes Bahama Bowl champions. I mean,
okay.
Gotcha. Well, thanks for taking my call, guys.
Thank you. Appreciate it. Let's go next to, uh, is it Dulce? Are we get it right, Dulce?
No, it's Doise.
Joyce.
It's okay. Chew it up, spit it out, stomp on it all you want, but just don't forget to call me when the chili's done.
is doyce your last name or your first name first name
doce but hey dois
it's hippieish
clearly it's okay
the reason I call it is because you guys were talking about
changes in sports and what's ruined sports a little bit
is there's two things that's been on my mind for years now
all the changes in NASCAR ruin NASCAR
NASCAR was the fastest-growing sport there for a while.
But the other thing that's really, really run sports
is I think this portal thing is going to run something
because it takes away from the commitment of playing for a team for four years.
Well, you know what?
I'm going to tell you this, Deuce.
I was of the belief of that 100 times over
until the last handful of years when coaches would leave on a dime to go somewhere else.
I wish I could fall in line with what you're saying
But I got coaches bumping from team to team to team
As soon as they get one great offer
So if the coaches are doing it
Why can't the players do it?
I can see that other side of the sword too
Yeah
It's not great
I'm not excited about it
I'm not excited about defending that side of it
I do believe I kind of like the rule where you had to skip a year
But man
It's not constitutional
They keep losing lawsuits
If I can transfer from a University of Texas and then I can go to University of Houston because I want to be closer to home, I don't need to sit out of school for a year.
I mean, you're supposed to be a student athlete and going to the school.
I'm going to have to sit down for you just because you play athletics.
Yeah, small example, doise.
I've got some friends of mine.
I went to North Texas my freshman year in this kid.
Coach there is Eric Morris.
And he is a really successful coach in North Texas.
They love him.
They're trying to figure out ways to keep him.
Eric Morris is going to have a new job in the next year.
He's just not going to be at North Texas
That's not the plan for him
He's going to have a chance to make five times what he's making right now
He's going to leave
So if he gets to leave, why can't the kids?
And that's my philosophy on that
I understand that side disorder
But at the same time, I don't like this bouncing around
From one team to another
And it's what are we going to do
For a Texas fan, what happens when we lose our quarterback
To the portal now?
yeah he's not portaling he's got the right to go he does he's got the right to go
uh doyce all i know is there's only one place he'd like to go and that's the university
of houston we don't need it why do you do this why do you set yourself up for these delusions
thank you doyce how why does that even come out of your mouth like what i i just i just don't
get it we don't need it i told you we got dachan henderson coming we got connor wickman's already there
It's an absurd statement for a team that just lost to TCU.
Bad calls.
How many points were scored by the star quarterback there?
Not enough.
14?
Did they score 14 points that whole game?
Like, I'm just curious why that comes out of your mouth.
So weird.
I'm a delusional Cougar fan.
I don't live with it.
That's fine.
Delusional Cougar fan.
Just play Kate to me.
Just let me have my time.
I don't even know how to handle this.
Like, do I just let this?
fly by?
Correct.
That's what you do.
Well, every time I'm on location or meet up people,
they say keep giving Matt Guff, so I don't know.
Uh-uh.
Well, Cooter fans don't stop giving me so much guff.
Well, I don't care about those idiots.
And that cesspool of a website,
you sad sack human beings.
Yeah.
No.
Joyce, I'm sorry.
If you fall on your sword for every sports take,
you're not going to win.
You have to adapt with a change with the time.
and the reality is you've got a bunch of coaches I could say what I mean I don't even know who
the Vanderbilt coaches but I'm presuming that he's going to be offered a new deal somewhere you know
Eric Morris is the kid I'm a coach talking about it north Texas but anybody's decent I mean
what is it old Dominion's got a good program this year whoever that dude is he's not
going to stay there long term yeah and a player who wants to find the best opportunity for them
they should be afforded that as well so I'm glad that they can do that
But, you know, I will say this, though, and to wrap this up,
is that we need to stop thinking about this as a place where these kids are going to go to school.
I mean, they're just, they're just, it's a minor league system.
And it is a little embarrassing that you would have a college football player
or athlete of any sport that's at three schools and three years.
I don't think that's the, that wasn't the spirit of the rule,
but, you know, it's happening with coaches.
H-town Lilo says, the portal is trash.
It's the coach's occupation.
if he wants to leave the school, allow us him to leave
and let him. The athletes are students, they're not
employees.
Well, they are now with getting cash.
Can I say something about me?
Yeah, get them!
I was going to, I teed that up for whoever wanted to take it.
And I'm not going to, I'm not going to be so critical,
but people with the outside perspective of saying
the coaches and athletic directors can leave what they want,
but students are essentially locked into school as almost like,
indentured servants or slaves
when we're the one
curating the product and getting the money
it doesn't make sense why you can't
go look for a better job if you're not getting
treated right it's
it's the same it's the same thing
if you if coaches want to stay there
and give me a good and give me a good
time and you know respect me
and then he leaves
maybe I want to go with him too
that was the coach that brought me in that's one I've already
had this yeah I've had this conversation
with my daughter my daughter is going to the
University of Rhode Island next year to play college volleyball because she loves the
coaches. If those coaches get fired or leave, that's going to impact her decision.
Now, she may want to stay at Rhode Island, and that's great.
But if she wants to move, I can't begrudge her that.
You go for the players, you go for the coaches, you go for the facility, you go for, I wish I could
say it's the education.
But to the education point, and I really want to hone on to this, there's been so many
athletes that I met that were at a group of five or even a very, very small.
D1 that ran the times that did perform and it got to a better institution with a better education
for that degree so they can move on when they get out of college.
It's just another way to upgrade yourself because maybe you didn't get the grades in college.
Maybe you didn't you get in high school.
Maybe you didn't get everything you wanted to do.
You were late Bloomer in high school.
You have a chance with the transfer portal to spread your wings out.
You know what I mean?
Yep.
Yeah.
And by the way, they're not in, they're getting paid now.
I mean, the schools that are agreeing to this allowing of the athlete compensation,
the schools can directly pay the kids now.
Let's not hide that.
So they are going to, I don't know, I don't know if it's tax-free or not.
I don't know.
I think it's not.
I think it's income, yeah.
So they're employees now.
Everything that we grew up thinking about the amateur status and what a student athlete is,
is no longer in play.
It's just not.
and it may not be what you grew up watching,
you may not like the trend of it is,
but I'm going to tell you right now
there are going to be 20 football games this weekend
that are going to mean a whole lot
to a lot of football teams around this country,
and they're going to have 85, 90,000 seats stadiums full
every single time around.
Michael and Roger Hank tight will get to you.
We got E.May Addoker to join the final hour,
the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
It's 1258 here on Sports Talk 790.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
With Ross.
102 Sports Talk 7-9.
Let's spend 10 minutes with the head basketball coach of your Houston Rockets
knocking off the suns here in Phoenix last night.
He made doka with us on the show.
Coach, thanks for the time.
Let's do this.
Let's evaluate Dylan Brooks smack to you during the game.
You chuckled one time.
Can you tell us what was said or is it for non-radio show purposes?
No, that was all me.
It was me messing with Dylan.
just talking a little bit
nothing real and I was going to laugh
it basically what I said
he might have thought I was serious but
we got a lot of love and respect for each
other and just giving them a little bit
for the Stephen
flopped
you know what he said y'all were flopping yesterday
I don't believe it for a second
y'all pull and tug it's what the NBA
lifestyle is all about I'm all for
congratulations on the win last night
you had to go with a different lineup
a thought or two about
Aaron Holiday man every time
you call his number for extended minutes, he's come through for you.
No, I've said it non-stop, that he's a constant pro, a guy that always stays ready,
and it works extremely hard, and no matter when it's been in these last years,
whenever called upon, to your point, he's always ready, plays multiple roles,
multiple positions, and does a little bit of everything as far as defending, scoring,
initiating offense, and so he's been great for us.
Last night, you didn't start the jumble on it, but you went to it a little bit,
during the second half.
As you watch this and the season progresses,
do you find yourself kind of curious
to throw the jumble line up in there
to see what it does when you don't normally think
you put it into play during the course of the game?
And how much of it is feeling?
How much of it is, hey, let's try something different?
I think it's something that works really well for us consistently.
And so we're going to go to that pretty much every game.
There's some non-conventional luncheon that you think we would not use it against,
but, you know, we can go to our zone there
and then teams are going to either kind of upsize
to match our physicality
or downsize to create mismatches.
But if we do what we do on the offensive end,
take care of the ball and then play a good zone
with communication and activity,
we can kind of combat any line of that's out there.
You have had to go a little bit deeper into the rotation
with the injuries popping up.
What did you see from J.D. Davison
with his 18 minutes, things you liked
and things that you would like to see improve.
Yeah, I mean, it fit in very well.
He's another guy that we're very confident in.
And obviously, numbers crunch and minutes at crunch at certain positions.
So with Aaron not being able to get minutes every night,
and we're fully healthy, it's obviously J.D.'s behind him as far as that.
So a guy that's had a really good preseason dominant in the G League,
and we see that carrying over into the games.
And so he kind of hit the ground running, you know,
handles the playing guard very well, can guard up or guard down.
I think he's just
fit in well with the other guys
and so having him out there with Reed or Aaron was great
and no guy that can handle
and like I said he got to bigger guys
and so I had a very impressive night.
Rocket's head coach,
Ema Adoka was here on Sports Talk 790.
A bit of a quiet night for Reed Shepard offensively
but just from my untrained
I looked defensively like he was holding his own
teams look for him.
What are your conversations with him
as far as the defensive side of the ball
where you know that there are teams
that are going to try to exploit his defense.
He's going to have to be ready for that.
I know you've run some zone with him as well.
And what have you seen from him on that end of the floor?
Well, first of all, you know,
we want him to take the challenge.
And I think he's done that and improved his physicality
during the ball this year.
And so in general, I think, you know,
it doesn't matter with him or Aaron
or somebody else that's more season than even stronger.
There's going to be some size advantages and disadvantages regardless.
And we can scheme up things to, you know,
getting heads and certain things that we did against Booker last night.
but, you know, he's taking on a challenge this year,
and it's a night and day from last year,
more confident, more physical, more aggressive,
and then understanding assignments, and so he's great there.
But even with that offensively, you know,
he just missed shots and that he normally makes him.
So, you know, we don't equate a bad night just to missing shots.
He still ran the pick and roll very well,
made a ton of great passes and got us into what we needed to.
EMA, is that a men-Thompson Eurostep mid-range,
becoming one of the most difficult shots for opponents to stop right now in the NBA?
Yeah, I mean, teams want to give up to him because of his pace and athleticism.
And, you know, he has a change of pace there and can stop on the dime and make that awkward shot.
So it's, you know, you keep giving up ground and he keeps eating up the space and elevates him.
He's so high over the ram or whatever.
And so, yeah, he's very unique player in the things he does, things you can't teach.
But he's more confident in the jumper, knocking down the mid-lanes.
They're going to step up a little bit and you can get to that much easier now.
I know the three-point shot is something he's still trying to work on.
And it feels like he's been a little more selective, especially since earlier this season.
Was that something that is just knowing where he is on the floor?
Is it something you've talked to him about?
I don't think you need him necessarily to shoot five or six a game.
But if that becomes something where he can knock down one or two for you every single night,
it will certainly open up your spacing on the offensive side.
Yeah, we want him to be aggressive, but also understand that take the shot that you want,
not the shot that the opponent wants you to take.
And so just because they're, you know, shifting off and trying to beat you into certain shots,
you can still flash back door like he does very well, still attack the close-out.
Like I said, eating up that space and be confident when the shot presents itself.
And so he's been much better in the corners, and we encourage him to take those above the break.
We wanted to move and get to his spots a little bit to the corner or the dunker spot a little bit more to, you know,
move the defense around, but when it's
presented, take the shot confidently, but also
don't fail teams out by taking it when you
want it and attack when they close out short.
Last year, obviously, it was a
knockdown, drag-out seven-game series with Golden State.
They're going through some injury concerns
just like you are right now. What have you
seen on tape and early thought about playing the
Warriors tomorrow and I?
Yeah, I mean, they've had some ups and downs
due to those injuries. Guys in the lineup
like a lot of league right now, but
But still, you know, decent record with the injuries and the set-by-fit they've had.
And so always a challenge.
You know, they've got a guy over there that makes that possible with Curry and playing the way he is.
And, you know, I obviously add Butler to the mix as well.
So we'll prepare for them if they're going to be whole.
And regardless, we hold ourselves to the same standard regardless of them for us as you saw last night.
And so no different on our end.
So I'm going there for a hard-fought game and, you know, going to this Thanksgiving break with the win.
you talked about wanting the guys to obviously with the ball movement being very important and and playing for each other and i think probably the best passing team or one of the best passing teams i can remember would be that 2014 spurs team that you were an assistant on do you ever talk about those teams or or show tape of those teams and bring it to your team about just when it comes to everybody passing and being unselfish yeah i mean we always and i may not have to
specifically about that team, but we're always harping on
making the right play, making the simple play
and, you know, good to great for the next
guy. And so the more we can do that, especially
with the double teams that Kevin and Alpy draw,
I think it's difficult to guard
and the randomness as far as that. And so
there are a sense we want to get into, but there's also
going to be those situations where you just, and
drive and kick mode. And when we get to that,
I think we've been really good because we've got multiple guys
that can do it.
EMA, thank you for the visit, as always.
Don't leave without me in a few minutes, and we'll
look forward tomorrow night's game against the Warriors
and go up in San Francisco.
Thanks for the time, as always.
I appreciate you guys.
I will see.
You may adoka with us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Rockets in Warriors tomorrow night from San Francisco.
NFL Rewan coming up in a little bit,
but I do want to get a couple of calls in before we do that.
Michael with us at 110 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Michael, thank you for holding it.
Good afternoon to you.
Hey, man.
What's going on, man?
How are you?
Amazing.
Thank you for asking.
Hey, man.
Good luck with the rockets tonight, man.
Safe travels.

follow uc you should also wanted to tell you matt we've got a lot of great fighters in h

Totally in fear.
Totally in fear, Thomas.
That's a little wordy.
What's wrong with Peach Basket?
I feel like the surprise.
Hey!
You love it.
Yeah.
We got a bunch of nickname for you.
Most of them we can't say off air.
I mean, on air.
I'm not a great.
Yeah, I'm going to say off of you're using quite frequently.
I think five diamond mat, fancy mat,
high horse mat.
48 ounces of coffee mat.
Mac and cheese mat.
Oh, 48 ounces.
Call that Matt.
You know, just 48 ounces.
That's it.
full throat
Thomas
okay
what
see Ross
see Jonathan
what you opened up
the can of
you just opened up
you
mr analogy
oh mr analogy
is a good one
I self glossed myself that one
Texans insider
Mr. Texas
Manny McRib
Manny
McRib
I kind of like that way
you know what it is
America sandwich
It is
Not
It is
If it was America
sandwich
It would be on the
menu the full year
No you know what it is
We
The McRib
Is the
What's that fish
They always serve
As specials
Everywhere you go
Um
Not tilapia
Trapia yes
The dirt fish
Of the fast food world
Mm-mm
Mm-mm
I'm not thinking
Tilapia
Something
Amahi
Mahi
That's what it is
That's what I was thinking of.
It's the special that they're trying to get rid of that's rotting in the back.
Yes, actually that works.
Because if you offered it 12 months a year, no more would eat anything but it.
So you have to make it a special.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, these restaurants don't want to make money.
If they offered it all year long, they would sell too many.
It's ridiculous.
You know what?
I will accept Maddie McGrib.
Okay, good.
NFL Rewind is next.
Oh, great.
You don't even have it ready to you.
That's not true, actually.
I actually, normally nine times out of ten, you'd be correct, but I actually did prepare.
I got here, I don't know what had got into me.
I got here a little early.
I prepared my segments today.
It's crazy.
Joshua, the fearless van with us in about 15 minutes here on Sports Talk 790.
Content more or the song more.
But it's a time now for a sports RV institution.
Was this the NFL win?
Fifth of Beethoven? I would believe it.
I would guess yes.
It was, I think it was.
So I've had 43 ounces of coffee.
I'm standing up in my room right now.
Number one.
Yep.
In 1976.
Why don't we get our audience to go to a disco tech
And we can play this song
I love disco music
You've got generally great singers
Great songwriting
Gloria Gainer
You get you get the full band
Plus you get strings
I mean it's it's very danceable
Fun
Yep light
Oh yeah
I used to when I was like in my 20s
And you know I thought I was cooler than everybody
It's like man
Disco sucks man it's so dumb
But then you grow old
and you're like, you know what?
Disco's awesome.
It's just feel good.
And you get the, it's a room full of music.
It's a full band plus strings.
It's amazing.
And as a white person, I can dance to it.
And I'm very happy about that.
Yeah, just, just point to your northwest.
Point to your belt, button, buckle, and then point to your northwest.
You're good.
You can shimmy, you can shammie.
Yes.
That's as far as you can go.
Yes.
You can hustle.
I love it.
All right.
How about the NFL rewind?
I can top 35 minutes of disco.
I had zero problem with that.
Disco needs to come back.
All right.
Well, actually, let's talk about a quick news item of what we mentioned yesterday.
Justin Tucker trying out for the Saints on Tuesday after Blake Groupie?
Or group, whatever.
Missed a couple of field goals against the Falcon.
unfortunately he was well for him i guess maybe fortunate to others he was not signed by the new
Orleans saints who are going with cade york signed to their practice squad following the tryouts
on tuesday so if you're in the justin tucker fan club which i know you are matt just kidding
he did not get signed by the new orleans saints so he's still looking for work yes and still
looking apparently for that just that right spot
for a massage because he's been trying a bunch of different
places in the Baltimore area. Didn't find
anything to his satisfaction. Or maybe he found too many
players for he said. He got satisfied and got out of town.
Is that what you're saying? He got satisfied too much. That's the
issues.
He started missing kicks.
Do you ever go to get a massage, Ross, and it just doesn't
feel great? I don't know. I've never had that issue.
I've had, I've only done one massage
and it was great. And actually,
I'm going to start doing it again. See, this is you're the worst.
I'm just getting in my 40s now
and I wake up and oh my hamstring hurts
and I wake up oh my back hurts
my lower back oh my upper back
like I need to start stretching
and getting massages regularly
it's just it's this is getting out of control
I'm getting too old
I'm down with I'm on team massage
same me too
too old over here
shut up
shut up actually you probably have more miles
on your legs than I do so
the leg part yeah
some people have more
miles on
He ran track.
He's got more miles than me.
I've walked a lot of my life.
I ran from the kitchen of the couch.
I walked to the drive-thru to the restaurants.
Exactly.
I walked to the garage to get to my car.
So I'm sure you've probably literally got more miles on your legs than I do.
But anyways.
All right, Matt.
How about some Hall of Fame semifinalist named five newcomers among the 20th?
modern era candidates.
All right, you're going to give me the list, and I'm going to tell you
at least one that shouldn't be in there.
Okay.
Go.
Let's, well, I don't have the, yeah, I can pull the full list.
Let me bring you the new guys first.
New to the game would be Drew Brees?
Yep.
Yeah, just say in or out, I guess.
I don't know that'd be easy.
Drew Brees, in.
Philip Rivers.
In.
Ooh, Frank Gore.
in he's like third all time in rushing i know in i know he blew off the show
larry fitzgerald
he if andre johnson's in larry fitzgerald it's not even close to me in jason
jason whitten
wow
he doesn't come to mind to me but my guess if you look at receiving arts
and without looking i think he's like
top five all time receiving
yards he's he's
I believe he's number one in
tight ends right or up there
maybe two
I my
my guess is if I took one minute to look at his
numbers I would say but I mean
he's kind of an accumulator you know like
Curtis Martin's one of the top
Russian all time leading rushers but you nobody was ever
like oh my God Curtis Martin's
the greatest in the game
nobody was created a dream team
how many years would how many players
is what it take for us to get to Jason
Witten as our tight end. Okay, you know what?
He's not as high as I thought. He's
21st. He's ahead of Travis
Kelsey. Mike
Evans. You know
what? I thought Jason Witten was higher.
Let me just give you... I thought he was like... It's just me
talk on top of the top of my head here.
Kellynne Winslow.
Yeah. Dicka.
Antonio Gates.
Tony Gonzalez.
Tony Gonzalez.
Shannon Sharp you put in there?
Oh, Shannon Sharp.
Travis Kelsey
I mean there's six
Right there that I would think of
Gronk
11 time a pro bowler
Now remember they're don't limit
So it's not you're kicking people out
Yeah I would say maybe not first ballot then
I thought his resume was a little bit better than I thought
Well 11 time pro bowl is nothing to sneeze at
Two time first team all pro
And 13,000 receiving yards
He's around Steve Largent
Travis Kelsey Mike Evans
Irving Friar, Art Monk, Devante Adams.
He's getting in, it just won't be right away.
Yeah.
You know what?
I'm going to put him on the shelf for a year.
All right.
Adam Vinatari is back on the list.
What do you think about him?
I think you should be in, right?
In.
Okay, the wide receiver crop is interesting.
Torrey Holt?
Out.
Steve Smith, Sr.
Out.
Hines Ward?
Out.
Easy, out for me.
Reggie Wayne.
Oh, Lord.
Against the Texans, in.
Hey, Earl Thomas is on this list?
Who is?
Hook them horns, baby.
Earl Thomas.
Rodney Harrison, Darren Woodson, the three debes.
Yeah, Earl Thomas, legendary Longhorn and Seahog DB.
In?
Who the other two?
I don't know about her.
Earl Thomas is fringe for me.
And then Rodney Harrison and Darren Woodson.
Out in.
Hmm
Okay
I'm going to read you a couple others
How about Vince Wilford?
Out
Luke Kieckley's got to be in
Are you sure
Terrell Suggs got to be in
Luke Keeckley retired young
But his
His resume is pretty insane
Nonetheless, I think
Look, it's
Five times
Time all pro
The hardest one to get into into his football, for sure.
Luke Keeckley played.
Although baseball requires 75%.
Luke Keeckley retired at 29.
Yeah, out.
Eight years.
Out.
However, out.
However, out.
Defensive rookie of the year.
Okay.
Defensive player of the year.
And five-time first team all pro.
Give me the 31 one to talk.
Five-time first team all pro.
Woo!
All right.
Gail Sayers.
he's in.
Terrell Davis thinks he's in.
Earl Campbell thinks he's in.
Yeah, right, you're right.
And that was the NFL rewind.
Let's talk some MMA next.
128 of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
This is Sports Talk 790.
All right, hey, did you get to the Creight Radio Network call
of the game against Baylor last night?
Here was the big highlight from it.
Into the pain.
Missed the dunk.
And I'm fucking foul.
What are you talking about?
That was two seconds after the play ended.
Car driving.
He's outside the circle.
He's outside the circle and he's set.
He was outside the circle and he was set.
Frank Smith blew it.
He was outside the restricted area.
He was straight up and down.
He was set like the statue sitting out in front of New York, New York, and they called that.
that's an absolutely horse crap call
in a game that's been played out like this
unbelievable bailout call
by an incompetent referee
and ball don't lie
Ross heart to heart
if I did that what would you say to me
hey Matt I heard your call last night
you lost your damn mind on a foul call
If you drop the ball, don't lie.
And the horse crap.
And that's like, that's from the heart too.
He was fed up.
That's so good.
As you know, man, what makes play-by-play guys who do play by,
if they're really into the game and really not faking and forcing it in big moments
and screaming when they shouldn't and stuff like that.
That was as genuine.
as it gets. He had it. That wasn't forced. I'll get the guy credit. That was he had it. He was pissed off. He was.
So good.
Did you ever find me and Craig called me, Duran? You know what? I need to ask Gordy. I look for the, we used to play it as late night filler. I mean, you're better than that late mad. But you know, classic, we had a series of classic moments in Rockets Radio history.
They would play, you know, Gene Peterson losing his mind. The clock wouldn't start in Utah.
and stuff like that.
And I can't find them.
So that's a gorty question.
We used to play that moment.
Hmm.
All right.
By the way, we're waiting for our MMA guy.
If he calls the next few minutes,
it's going to be your interview,
which you like MMA enough.
Sure, why not?
I got a fact sheet.
Yeah, we're good to go.
Let's go to Roger on line 2 at 135.
Roger, terrible news for you.
can't be a
prize for it today
and believe it or not
we're not playing
so I hope
you're okay with that
that's fine
it's all good
no no no no
I'm too busy
for price for them today
got to get these jobs
done for the holidays
and they talk to you
so
yeah
Rossi
I just
you can't be
softening
you of age too much longer
my friend
we're a perennial
powerhouse
and basketball
that's you know
that's more than what any
the Texas team
can say about
whatever sport they're
supposed to be good at
the only thing
UT is good for
is a
classic underachieving.
Y'all get a championship,
then Pekaboo, we're out, and then we're out, and then we're out.
So, yeah, it's going to be to where, you know,
we're going to not not be so much so laughable in a little while.
And maybe you can draw more than 30,000 at your football games.
That'd be cool.
We're working on.
And it's a work in progress.
We're working on the last, I don't know, 80 years.
We'll see what we can do.
Anyway, on the Rocketsville, I did not mind.
Dylan Brooks having a nice game like that.
You know, if it wasn't for him and Fred coming in
and being part of that culture change,
man, they really did a lot for us as far as getting that program,
getting our program back on track as far as being taken seriously, at least.
And, yeah, I just thought that Dylan was a big part of that.
And, yeah, I didn't mind seeing it, annex and all that stuff.
It was cool to see, you know, I knew they were going to win
because now the kids are growing up now, and the other grown men now, right?
You see Alpi and Javari and Alman, and those guys are like, they're like laughing at them.
Like, you know, it's just like, it's not as serious that it used to be in.
Man, man, Reed Shepherd.
Remember when I called in, before the season started, I said that this thing is only good as Reed Shepard's progress.
And I was already panicking and saying, hey, man, I think we might be the Band-Aid until Banffleet comes back and yada-da-a-y-y-y-y-and- now.
guys just progressing, and he didn't even really have a good game last time, but still
it's good enough to where, you know, he had some turnovers with, man, he can get the
ball, he can get into your face, and he can be a pet, and then he can make a pass, and then
it's just like his scrappiness, I guess.
He's like a better version of Scotty Brooks, a little taller.
So, yeah, man, I like where this is going, and I just, you know, stay healthy and keep the
course.
And on the Astros, it looks like a pitcher's already left to Boston.
it looks like one of the pictures are already gone
that we're trying to get
so I don't need to make a move
and we already got you down to utility players
are trying to get Brandon Donovan
and I just don't think that's going to happen.
I just don't think.
Thanks, Roger, for the phone call.
Ross, I just, and we talked to Brian McTagger about this last week,
I don't know if the Astros are going to make
any sort of major splashy hires in the off season.
I just don't.
The splashy hire would be to get Hunter Brown
and or Jeremy
signing extension
yeah
that's to me
would be the sexy thing
to do in this option
and I get both of them done
I don't yeah
I don't think Dylan cease is coming
Justin Verlander's going to be
kind of a mid move
I don't know
I mean I've been surprised
by Jim Crane before
the Josh
going for the Josh
hater deal
and going into the tax
was a surprise
and there was something more recently
right that was a surprise as well
Was there a trade at the deadline that got him over for a little bit?
Was it Eurias and or Sanchez going on?
Maybe. I can't remember.
All right.
We're going to start a conversation here with our next guest.
He is a Houston guy.
He is the number one UFC flyweight in the world.
He trains right here in Houston, Texas.
And he is going to be an action coming up on December the 6th for UFC 323 on the match.
Thomas Show at Ross. It's Joshua, the Fearless Van. Joshua, it's Matt and Ross. Thank you for coming on
the show. How are you this morning or this afternoon? I'm doing great, sir. How are you doing?
Good. Hey, take us through your life. You are 8-1 in the UFC. You got a five-fight win streak.
What did it got you into it, and how did the city of Houston get you help you in your training to be
where you are right now?
Well, I start my fighting career because, you know, I was fighting a lot in the street and things like that.
So, you know, my auntie basically was like, hey, why don't you fight for your country and, you know, your family and things like that.
So that's when I started to go to the gyms and, you know, trying to fight on the state and things like that.
But as far as my training, man, you know, For Ons Fight Club has been helping me all my life.
So they'll be doing a great job of, you know, helping me prepare for every fight.
And Joshua, you moved to Houston when you were a young man, what, 12 or 13, correct?
12, yes, sir.
And what was that like when mom and dad said, hey, we're moving out of Southeast Asia to come to the United States?
And why did they choose Houston, Texas?
Is there any, is their family here before that?
Yeah.
Yeah, we already have my uncle here, you know what I mean?
I was in Malaysia in a refugee camp and things like that.
So, you know, the only family we have was my uncle when he was here.
So, you know what I mean?
When it was time to come here, you know, they asked for like the address of our family members and things like that.
So this was the address that we gave them.
So they sent us here and that was the best thing that ever happened in my life.
well you're going to be in a big event UFC 323 in Las Vegas on December the 6th
you're going to be taking on uh help me out with his last name alexandra pantoya is that
how you pronounce it yes sir pentosia pentosia okay
he is a very successful distinguished career size up his strengths and what you think
could be a weakness or two when you fight him on December the 6th uh I don't see a lot of weaknesses
as in right now
but you know what I mean
sometimes what you see on TV
and when you finally get in
the case with them
is like completely different
so
you know
come fight day December 6
on that night
I'll figure him out
and you know what I'm trying
to adjust to his styles
and things like that
so yeah
I'm going to have to wait
and see that night
you know of what he
or what he brings to the tables
and things like that yeah
Joshua I had the nickname
I'm in total fear how do you get the nickname the fearless well when I started fighting
they call me the savage and I was like the name savage you know what I mean I was trying to
look for any nicknames and things like that so when when I was watching the show called the
last kingdom and I see this guy named the fearless and I was like yeah I really like the
feelings and i was looking at my fighting styles and things like that so you know i give myself that
me all right i think it probably works for you pretty well if you want to see uh the event it's
going to be on the espm pay-per-view on december the 6th ufc 323 how long does it take you
before we wrap things up how long does it take you to prepare how much downtime do you get after
a fight and then when do you have to ramp it back up knowing that december 6 was on your calendar
what was the question
sir? Sorry.
Just basically how much
how much time in between fights
do you have to prepare? How much downtime
do you have? And when do you start to ramp
things up when you know a new
fights on your schedule?
Yeah, well it depends.
Like if you look at all my
UFC career, like most of them
are like the short notice.
You know, it gave me three weeks, two
weeks, and sometime in a week.
So I'm just ready whenever they call me, man.
and uh but uh for this fight they gave me uh they gave me like four months in advance of getting ready
for this fight so uh that was plenty of time so you know that was uh we used that wisely and
you know me this is the best can i ever had how is the four ounce fight club is there a lot
of future stars when you when you work out here in town yes sir there's a lot of guys that
i come up with and you know there's another u s fee fighter that i come up with
in the same logo scene.
His name is Michael Aswell.
And then there's another guy's name
Alden Korea. And, you know,
we got three other guys
that are going to be the USC
fighters pretty soon. So,
you know what I mean? We're just bringing
up the young and
can't wait.
Joshua, thank you. What's going to happen with the dream.
I hope so. Hey, have a great trip to
Vegas. Good luck. Represent the City of Houston.
Thank you for the time. And best of luck on December
the 6th. We appreciate you coming on the show today.
thank you all right thank you buddy that's joshua joining us here on the radio program again he will
be joshua the fearless van he will be in action on december the six ufc 323 and it's kind of cool
to have a houston guy in that event ross it's you the rest of the way my friend i'll talk
with you tomorrow from san francisco california for the rockets and the warriors
mattie mcrib signing out 1244 on sports talk 790
not exactly
Matt Thomas
stealing off early
traveling with the Houston
Rockets
as they are now leaving Phoenix
they will be taking on the Golden State Warriors
on Sunday
thanks to Joshua Van
the UFC fighter
for joining us in the last segment
you know what
he could really kick my ass and like
put me into a pretzel so I'm just going to say nice things about Joshua Van we appreciate you
thank you for making the time and I hope he wins his fight representing Houston I went to look
it up he is a plus 185 underdog in the fight Jonathan which I don't think you bring that up to the
fighter like what's the what's the betting line I think I don't think he really care he probably
doesn't care hey the only way to make an upset is being underdog that's what I'm talking about
that's how I'm calling it with the Houston tech how do you feel about me my gut feeling earlier today
Houston, Texans pull the upstead, and the Texas Longhorns pull the upset.
An upset weekend coming up on Thanksgiving weekend in football here in the great state of Texas.
I think you're one in one, I think.
Who am I going to be right?
Oh, you already had the Aggies winning.
Yes, I think Texas and Colts, I think Texas got it, man.
After that defense showed out and how they rallied, even with the offensive line.
They got the extra time off.
You're getting C.J. Stroud back.
Now, I don't want to do you, are we saying C.J. Stroud is fresh and ready to go, or he needs to clear the cobwebs out?
What do we even say?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Well, he's not clear, Jay.
Four and a half point.
He's going to be fine.
He's going to be cleared.
He's going to play.
Aaron Wilson reported yesterday that the expectation is he's going to be able to play.
So I'm not necessarily worried about him being able to play.
He's going to be all right.
And I think the Texans are going to pull off the upset.
I just, I don't know.
The Colts did lose last week to the chiefs.
They barely pulled it off against the Falcons.
And the week before that, they lost to the Steelers.
They had a hot start to the season, but I'm just not convinced that they're going to be able to keep it up.
And maybe I'm just riding too high off that bills win.
And maybe I'm huffing the fumes of recency bias with that nice victory over the bills on Thursday night at home with eight sacks.
I mean, if they sacked Jonathan Allen, that's you, Josh Allen.
And I called you Josh Allen last week, too.
I'm getting my Jonathan and my Josh Allen's mixed up.
John, Josh Allen, if they sacked him eight times,
I'm feeling pretty good about what they might be able to do against Daniel Jones,
but that is going to be on the road in Indianapolis this week at noon.
So we'll see what happens there.
As I mentioned, Matt off on not on holiday,
just leaving a little bit early with the Rockets.
They got the win last night against the Phoenix Suns.
They're on a four-game road trip right now, taking on Phoenix,
and then now they're taking on the Golden State Warriors tomorrow,
and then a couple of games in Utah.
then they get off Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, three days off.
I actually should have asked Matt this.
They don't want to go straight to Salt Lake City, right?
NBA players, I think that's like 30 out of 30, Salt Lake City as far as the cities they would want to hang.
Are they going to come all the way back home?
A lot of times when they get three days off, they might come home and then go back to Utah.
Really?
You can do that when you're flying private.
If you come back Wednesday night, you can have Thanksgiving with your family, then Friday, then leave Saturday to Utah and then go to the back-to-back.
on Sunday and Monday. That's probably what
they would do if I would have had to guess.
But a nice win by the Rockets yesterday,
114 to 92 over the Phoenix Suns.
I'm calling it a big three.
I just am. Kevin Durant, Alprin Shungoon,
Amen Thompson.
What's up? Already? What's not a big three?
Kevin Durant's one of the greatest players of all time.
Alpern Shingoon was an all star last year and he's been better this year.
Didn't even really, one of the questions I wanted to get to Eme Adoka,
we thanked to him for interviewing with us earlier on the show.
You can catch it at sports talk 790.com.
The podcast page is about Alprin Shungoon.
Now, he's not taking a ton of threes,
but he is shooting like 44% from three this year.
He is a career 23% or excuse me, 29% three-point shooter.
He shot 23% last year.
That's not going to keep up.
But he's also, he's shooting three a game and shooting 44%.
If that can continue, he's just going to be flattowed
unstoppable. Because he does have issues
sometimes dealing with the bigger, bulkier
centers we saw against Jonas Valenciunis
and Nicolioch on Friday. He struggled.
He only shot 6 of 14 from the field.
So he is going to run into some roadblocks
there. But if he can continue
to shoot three is the way that he is
and have defenses respect that,
he's, and he's already been,
he was an all-star last year. You're an all-star, you're part
of a big three. And then a men
Thompson first-team all-defense. And he's
averaging like 18, 19 points
a game this year.
So I'm going with it.
Big three, Houston Rockets.
What's up?
You're going to try to fight me on that?
I just, I mean, it's too early.
I feel like for a man to little too early with all the turnovers.
And I was there at the Orlando game.
He had a horrific game.
And I just don't feel like if you're going to call it a big three,
they have to be all three efficient.
Like 18 points, six rebounds, five assists, first team all defense,
Alpern-Shingon and All-Star.
Kevin Durant, one of the greatest players to ever walk the planet.
Rockets have a big three.
What's up?
And we lost to OKC.
Yes.
San Antonio.
Detroit and Denver.
Arguably the top four teams right now in the league.
Not an embarrassing loss among the bunch for the Rockets.
All right.
Next game on Wednesday here on Sports Talk 790 as they take on the Golden State Warriors.
And that'll do it for the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Without Matt Thomas for the last segment here on Sports.
Sports Talk 790. Ross v. Real saying, thank you so much for listening to the program. I do appreciate you making time.
Thanks to Joshua Van for joining. E. Mae Adoker for joining. Derek Schultz for joining and Matt Thomas for joining for, I don't know, two and a half hours and change of the show as well.
Thanks to Jonathan Allen for producing doing a great job as he always does. I'll talk to you folks next tomorrow at 10 a.m.
As part of the Matt Thomas show with Ross, don't go anywhere. It's two atoms. They call themselves the A team.
And they're coming up next here on Sports Talk 790.
Thank you.
