Launch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
1002 in H-Town.
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to a Tuesday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Ross has the day off.
He, I believe, can be found in Nova Scotia today.
Hope everything is working well for his worldwide vacation.
Dan Matthews, normally in with me at this point, is running late.
Such a rookie move.
Connor McGovern, don't you know when you live in the?
Burbs like we do. You got to leave like two hours early.
Oh, yeah.
So we will give some game to
our buddy Dan when he gets here coming up in a few minutes.
We have a very busy show for you today,
and we look forward to having you with this all the way
until 2 o'clock this afternoon. I'm coming to you from
Minneapolis, where it's
20 degrees here, and you're like,
Matt, we've all been in cold weather shut up.
Okay, that's fine.
I'm just going to tell you this.
First of all, we are the nicest city in America.
Now, some of you are mean to me on Twitter, but that's a different issue for a different time.
We are generally speaking, a city of wonderful, nice people.
Our women are beautiful.
Our food is amazing.
We've got great culture, lots of stuff to do, interesting sports teams.
But there are other great places, too.
In Minneapolis, I lived here for three years.
And I promise I not to do this every single time I get up here to do this, but I don't know how in the hell I did it.
because what's the temperature counterback home?
Is it going to be in the 70s at this point?
Something like that?
Yeah, I'd say today it's in the mid-70s.
There's a little bit colder this morning, like the 60s to start the day.
20 freaking miserable degrees.
I don't know how people do it.
And the crazy thing is that when I lived here for three years,
while I enjoyed my neighborhood, I had great neighbors,
had lots of nice people I met.
If you're not from here,
they don't want to hear you bitch about how cold.
it is because 90% of the people that live in this state are from this state and that's all they know
they don't know what it's like to have a 70 degree late november day now i understand if you
if you want sweater weather or some of you want to wear hoodies and whatnot and i get that
but i'm telling you you come up here like we we walked the dinner yesterday it was like a half
mile from my hotel the restaurant we went to and i was like i i got to get back to houston as soon as
possible. Like tomorrow we're going to be in Philadelphia. Rockets are. It's 45 degrees there.
That is like a significant warm up to what 20 degrees are. So for any of you, and this is just my daily
little advice to you, not that you have to take it, but for any of us that bitch and Mona complain
about 104 degrees in July and August and September, just remember, it's always going to be
better than 20 degrees in windy. And that's my weather message.
message for today.
All right.
On the radio program today,
we will have,
coming up at 1130,
your gut feelings.
This is where you make your
sports predictions,
and we will get to those.
How we did last week?
How we'll do this week?
That'll be coming up
as we do that on a weekly basis
on Tuesdays.
We have the news at noon.
We have at 1230.
Conner's NFL rewind from last night.
We'll get to that.
Some of the big things
that happened from the NFL this past weekend.
At 1.30, we will talk
with Willie,
Ritz, he is the head football coach of our beloved Houston Cougars.
Cougars wrap it up their season with a late-night tilt in Provo this Saturday.
And it's supposed to be the coldest game, at least regular season-wise, the Cougars have ever played.
I don't know if that's going to be the case, but it's going to be pretty damn cold.
I will be in Utah for that one just because I'm a sucker for punishment in cold weather.
But the decision was made if you've not heard if you're a Cougar fan, Kevin Barbee, Barbe, the offensive coordinator has been relieved of his duties.
and so the Cougars will have a new offensive coordinator at least for one game.
It is the quarterback's coach Sean Bell, and we will hear from what Coach Fritz had to say about making this change with one game left to go.
Look, the Cougars offense this year has just not been good.
It's been shut out a couple of times, two straight weeks without an offensive touchdown.
It's just not good, and it's going to need a talent infusement, that's for sure.
And obviously, Coach Fritz deciding there needed to be a change in the coaching situation as well with one game.
game remaining, so we'll talk to him about that.
We have the Rockets tonight here in Minneapolis, taking on the Wolves in a playing tournament
game, not playing, I always want to say, in-season tournament game.
If the Rockets win this game, they will advance to the knockout round, which means they will
win their group and it will be one of the eight teams that will have a chance to make it
to a final four, and those final four teams will go to Las Vegas to play for potentially
a half million dollars.
You know, these NBA players have got to strive to make ends.
So this half million dollars will go a long way towards making that happen.
So we will obviously get some rockets chatter going on that.
We have another coaching firing in college football,
and it does relate to somebody that we all know.
And I think most people love.
Some people tolerate, but most people love.
And that involves a former Texas football coach looking for work.
We had last night's game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Los Angeles Chargers.
And then we have D'Amico Ryan's doing his normal Monday get-together with the media.
and I know we're going to play some of the audio coming up in the next segment of the show.
Again, we need to interpret what D'Amico had to say,
and whether or not he believes it or he's just putting on a brave face,
or he is saying one thing publicly and then thinking about other things privately.
So we'll let you hear some of the audio from D'Amico's from yesterday's press availability.
Jalen Petrie's situation on the injury front does not sound very good.
He's got a peck injury.
And most players that have peck injuries have to miss significant period of time,
if not the entire season.
And so I don't know if the Texans are trying to keep glass half full in this,
but usually peck injuries are a significant loss of time.
So the Texans will be looking for some safety help
as they get ready for this weekend's game with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So we've got a lot of little things to get to.
There's also a report from Bob Nightingale today.
that says that the Astros may have been an offer in the 160 range,
and that's not going to be enough.
Apparently, Mr. Breggman and his agent, Scott Boris, wants $200 million as part of the deal.
So we will get to that as well.
Look who just arrived in the Sports Talk 790 Studios,
the one and only Dan.
How was it drive this morning?
Boy, you know what?
Shout out to everybody right there on West Loop South.
You know, nothing says, hey, it's the holiday season like, hey, let's get into an accident and screw up everybody else's day.
I left my house at 9 o'clock.
And on the GPS, it said I would be here by about 9.30.
Yeah.
And then I was like, okay, well, if that's the case, you know, shows and, you know, hay's in the barn, we're good to go.
I'll stop and get a quick breakfast sandwich where it took me one minute to run into the place, grab the breakfast sandwich out of the heater and a Red Bull and get back.
in the car and all of a sudden I start seeing the time is going 945, 950, 955, and even higher and
higher.
And yeah, you know, it's just nice when people pay attention to what they're doing and don't
get into a fender bender and it messes up everyone's day.
Yeah, accidents happen though, unfortunately.
I mean, I've been a part of a few of my life.
I've got to be honest.
Some have been my fault.
Some have not been.
No, I get it.
And trust me, I've been there too as well.
I've, you know, gotten pulled over by Johnny Law before as well for going too fast.
But it's just a lot of times, Sue, and you drive around on these roads.
And, you know, we hear whenever, you know, AC does his reads from O'Carum Law,
he mentions it as well that you get a lot of people who do exactly what they tell you not to do,
the distracted driving.
Oh, hey, I've got to send off this text.
No, you don't.
There's probably in most cars car play for a reason for you to be able to speak.
it and if it's really that important pull over and send the text and get out of my way and don't
inconvenience me man you sound um kind of preachy today it's prime time for the holiday season let's just
say that okay yeah you cooking a turkey this year so i'm not handling the turkey what i am handling
though is my dad's famous holy trinity uh cornbread dressing which i you know i i kept
hearing on the show previous about
stuffing out of a box,
which I quickly reminded them
down here we don't call it stuffing, number
one. But number two,
if you've got the ability, don't make
it for, nothing
out of a box shows
hey, I made this with love.
Yeah, but when you're
eating it, do you really care where it came from?
You can tell the difference.
I can. Absolutely.
When I have my dad's dressing, absolutely.
I know the difference. And
Some people put apples in it.
I'm like, no, no, no.
Just don't put raisins in it.
Anybody that puts raisins in anything just ruins it.
I'm automatically.
That's another one.
You know, I will say this, though, you know, because I'm a chicken salad guy.
I'm assuming you are as well.
For the longest time, I would try to fight the urge for the grapes in the chicken salad.
Yeah, like tarragon chicken salad.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
Yeah, but, I mean, I, you know, finally I was like, all right, here, let me try it.
I loved it.
Like, the balance of flavors was outstanding.
I was like, you know what?
Yeah, grapes are delicious.
You really can't add grapes to something and not go, this adds something to it.
I get you on that.
It was, it's a good move.
So, yes, I mean, look, homemade always tastes better.
And, you know, the way that my dad makes it, I mean, it's meticulously made.
I mean, he will bake the cornbread himself.
And then now that he's got grandkids, he's, you know, put them to work in terms of, hey, break up the cornbread here.
And then, of course, it's got to be fine.
It's got to be finally broken down.
And if it's not, then you have to keep breaking down the cornbread.
Otherwise, it's not going to be ready to go.
Yeah, another show in the marketplace is going to tell you about breaking down cornbread.
Some people will break down cover two.
Some people will break down a two, three zone defense in basketball.
We break down cornbread here.
Or ask the offensive coordinator about why he wasn't wearing a hat in a game.
I mean, you know, we could do that too.
No, we don't do that.
No, no, no.
And we never will either.
No, no.
All right, so CJ Stroud was a headline on today's first take show.
You ever watch that show?
Hopefully not.
I try to say out of the shallow end of the pool.
Yeah, but it was the headline, I almost screen captured it to put it on social media,
but it's like, is CJ regressing?
We will get into that, but I do want to hear what D'Amico had to say
coming back from our first time out of the show.
And I want us to believe or not believe what.
uh, D'Amico was saying, and is he, is his glass remaining half full on a football team that has
gone through a bunch, what, four of six losses in it? The last four of the six have been losses,
correct? I believe you're right. Yeah, no, I, I believe you're right. I mean, uh, what,
they've lost two out of their last, uh, or three out of their last four, if I'm not mistaken, right?
All right. So is the chipper D'emico Ryan's still what you want to hear at this point? We'll hear from
some of his comments next. 713-212-5-7-9.
713-212-5-7-90 if you want to get in.
Matt here in Minneapolis, Dan is back off the streets
and into our 790 studios in Houston.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Our time is 1014.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Dan filling in on Sports Talk 7-90.
Lunch-timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
1019 on Sports Talk 7-90.
Matt here in Minneapolis.
Dan back in our Houston's.
The studio's Dan, the press conference with the head football coach of your beloved Houston Texans,
Domingo Ryan's, Monday at around 2.30.
You guys chopped it up a little bit yesterday.
What do we find from the highlights and what are we to believe?
And what are we to believe is him being polite when it comes to coach speak?
Rallying the troops.
That's pretty much what it is.
And, oh, by the way, I guess this might be a replay.
Your C.J. Stroud topic is up.
So I'm glad to see that the morning to midday TV network.
sports shows are taking a break from Cowboys and LeBron talk.
But that's another story for another time.
But rallying the troops.
D'Amico yesterday, of course, I mean, we've heard it all, right, Matt.
We've heard of players-only meetings.
One led by CJ, one led by Joe Mixon.
And then the other day, hey, everybody's got to look themselves in the mirror.
That's what Aziz Al-Shayr told the rest of the team.
Well, D'Amico says it really just comes down to, hey,
you got a job to do, just do it.
Yeah, for us, we just got to go do it.
Like, it's, we got a lot of cleaning up to do, which we go through the film and our guys
understand what we have to do.
But we just have to go do it.
Like, as I told our guys, we don't need a big meeting.
Nothing needs to be said or talked about.
We just got to go do our job.
So there you go.
No more meetings.
We don't need them anymore.
Hey, like, you know what it almost kind of reminds me of.
And I know that you've never watched the office.
but kind of the running storyline of it was Michael would always say everyone into the conference room
and then you have people rolling their eyes, all right, fine, what's this going to be about?
Like pretty much anybody that's ever worked in an office can relate.
But, I mean, that's pretty much what D'Amico's saying.
Hey, we're not going to the conference room.
Like, we know we need to play better.
We know that we need to stop having pre-snap penalties.
We know that we are beating ourselves, like all of those different things.
And I'm on board with it.
Well, you know, the reality is this, everybody, is I think if you overmeet, and this is a football locker room, this is a boardroom of a Fortune 500 company, this is a restaurant.
If you continue to have meetings over and over and over again, they become hollow.
They don't, in one ear and out the other.
And my guess is when you've had as many of these quote-unquote meetings the Texans have had and history repeats itself by making the same sort of mistakes, I think DiMico's right.
enough of meetings, you've got to fix this, you know what you can do.
We were playing at a very high level earlier this year.
We have faltered in some very key categories.
Instead of having these conversations where we're studying the film over and over again,
I think he right there is like, I don't want to continue to sound like a broken record,
but unfortunately he sounds like a broken record these days.
Well, I mean, it's also too.
I mean, it's because of good reason.
It's the same stuff all over and over again.
I mean, it's the pre-snap penalties.
It's two guys moving in motion and it wipes away a touchdown.
It's an offensive lineman too far down the field and again wipes away a touchdown.
I mean, it's things like that.
And then on top of it all, I mean, you know, we broke down the inventory of penalties they had against Tennessee on Sunday.
Four of them on special teams.
I mean, a couple of holdings in there and an unnecessary roughness.
Like it's kind of to the point where I'm guessing that exactly what you said.
The message to the team is enough, enough talk, enough of, oh,
hey we have to do this like do the job like it's really just that simple just do the job like you've been
playing football long enough you know what's a penalty what's not and what you can and cannot do so
just do it the right way and we're not having this discussion he continues on he is the head coach
he is the leader he is the largest voice in the room so he takes that job incredibly seriously
he says hey the team ready to go that's my job it's my job to help all of our guys to make sure
You know, as the head coach, it's my job to make sure we're all locked in.
It's not just CJ, of course, he owns up to his mistakes, but it's not only CJ, it's everyone on the entire team.
Like, it's not just him.
Everybody has their one play here or there that can end up hurting you.
But at the end of the day, mistakes happen in football, right?
That's the game we play.
Mistakes happen.
Teams exploit mistakes sometimes.
Sometimes they don't, right?
But it's about how you finish the game.
still had an opportunity there to finish the game and we did it.
Yeah.
I mean, that's as point blank as you can be about it.
I mean, he's not wrong.
I mean, this has been a team that at the beginning of the season,
we were all lamenting about, oh, they're in close games, but they were winning those
close games.
And I was the one who thought at the time, Matt, that this is going to benefit them.
Because when you do play against Baltimore, you do play against Kansas City, that's the
type of game you're going to be in.
And I understand the competition is going to be even better against them.
But if you don't feel concerned in those situations that you're not going to be able to come through with a win, then it can benefit you.
But all of a sudden, I think we've kind of realized the other side of this of, oh, yeah, those mistakes we were making, everything we were doing against, I don't know, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, any of these other teams that are kind of tomato cans compared to those guys.
Yeah, it's starting to show up.
Well, here's the thing, and every penalty hurts.
But there are going to be some penalties in the course of a game that are frankly expected because every NFL team does.
I'm talking about pass interferences.
I'm talking about illegal blocks in the back on kicker and punt returns.
I'm talking about, frankly, offensive holdings.
You want all that stuff to go away.
And on the offensive holding stuff, that just means that either your technique is bad or athletically you can't
stay up with the past rush that's coming your way and that's more times than not well i mean
the but the hold on the penalties to me that drive me crazy are the false start penalties
the illegal man downfield the two men in motion that to me dan is stuff that is uh people that
commit those penalties are are mentally checked out of the play and that to me would piss me off
more for D'Amico than the holds, the pass interferences, the illegal blocks, because unfortunately,
the support itself lends itself to those types of penalties on a fairly regular basis.
Well, I mean, and especially this year, they're exacerbated because it's been more prevalent.
You've been having these issues week in and week out.
And it's funny enough, you know, last night, the Mannings, I usually, whenever Peyton and Eli are on,
I'll watch them just because I like, you know, just the way that they look at the game and the way they
explain it, but they had Mike Vrable
on, and he was talking about dealing
with, you know, the holdings and the
pre-snap penalties and all these other things.
And, I mean, it's things that you
work on in practice. I mean, I
haven't been out of Texas practice
and forever, but I have to believe they have
officials out of practice. Most teams
do now. I mean, like,
I understand it's also, too,
you tell a guy, hey, on that play
right there, make sure your technique's better, you know,
be in better position so you don't have to hold.
Okay. Well, you just did it again.
Like it's kind of to a certain point where are we kind of dealing with a team that's full of guys who just can't comprehend it, much less can't do what's required of doing the job the right way?
I mean, if that's the case, then it's an even larger issue because then it's a, you know, it's an evaluation and a development issue with this team at this point, which I hope it's not.
I mean, I understand, too, where this team is at.
I mean, I've had the rational people, hey, everybody calm down.
They're seven and five.
They're in first place.
I just think that more than anything, it's two things meeting up.
It's angst of wanting to finally get past the divisional round.
But it's B, also too, as well, believing that this team should be better than they are.
Well, if you watched Baltimore last night against the L.A. Chargers,
Houston Texans fans, you should be very, very scared of what that team can do away from Baltimore.
Was it five?
It was five straight possessions they scored point or four?
at least four of them.
And the game, frankly,
the final score was closer than the game was,
because when Baltimore turned it out in the second half,
they were pretty damn explosive,
and Lamar Jackson was fantastic last night.
And that'll be a game that you'll see on Christmas.
But first things first,
you've got to start feeling better about yourself
and beating a Jacksonville team on Sunday.
7-13-212-5-79 if you want to jump in.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-90.
I think Domingo's saying all the right things,
but man,
stuff is he's probably getting tired of it.
He needs his team to execute and not make some of the silly mistakes that we have seen
during these recent losing times.
7-13, 212-5-7-9 if you want to join in.
We have gut feelings coming up at 1130.
We have Conner's NFL rewind at 1230 and Willie Fritz on the offensive coordinator shakeup.
That is today at 130.

1033 sports talk 790 matt in minneapolis that should be my alter ego uh and we got dan matthews back in
houston nice to have all of you with us and by the way a lot of you probably have the week off
because you're in school or your kids around and you need to take some vacation times if you've never
called the show before and you're like hey i've never had a chance because i'm busy on sales calls
or i work a nine to five i can't get to the phone we're more than welcome to uh join us here
everybody's always welcome but i always like to give a special shout out to those of you that don't normally get a chance to call the show and you are welcome to do that at 713212 570 790 719 710 710 by the way the folks in and the betting world are not nearly as bullish dan on the texans something called a website that we will not mention because they don't spend money with us we'll be saying that the texans have gone from on uh november 18th as a 22 to 1
favorite to win the Super Bowl to now a 30 to one favorite. That's no surprise when you
drop four of six. Yeah, that's usually not an ideal scenario to inspire confidence with people
who want to go to the window and place a wager on you. But now, I mean, that's increased value
for you if you think that maybe the Texans can live up to Joe Mixon's words of getting hot
at the right time and being able to make that run. So, I mean, that's the way to look at it,
is now you just get more increased value. Usually it was a situation.
like this, it decreases in value,
but now you might have a better chance if
you want to head over to Lake Charles.
Yeah, I wonder how late you can go.
I've never put prop,
I've never done those kind of prop bets, futures.
I wonder how long you can go in before ultimately
they're, I guess you'd go all over to the playoffs, right?
I mean, yeah, I believe you can.
So I've done it a couple of different times.
I did one on the Super Bowl
with Tom Brady,
and, you know, I just was near a window
when it looked like that Tom Brady was going to be going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And I said, well, those odds, why not?
You know, place a little bit of money on it.
It worked.
In the year before, I usually will do three different players for a Heisman future.
And I was in Vegas for a wedding.
And I went with Jake Fromm to a Tongaviloa and Joe Burrow.
And, of course, when I told a buddy of mine, yeah, you know, Joe Burrow was in there.
Oh, you just wasted money.
Jokes on you now, bud.
Yeah.
Wow.
Yeah, I've never, the only future I put on last year is I did have,
I did have two bets, one on Houston winning the final four in college basketball and then Connecticut.
I was like cashed the Connecticut one, but it was on like four and a half to one, so I'll make a lot of money.
Oh, well.
Someday we'll get a chance to have that here in Texas, I think.
I hope so.
It would be nice.
But I feel like I've been saying that for 30 years.
Well, I mean, it would be nice to, I mean, even, you know, in-person kios.
I mean, like I said, I stopped and got a breakfast sandwich this morning.
If I had more time at, say, a said place there that had, oh, hey, I can go over there,
place a 20 in there and, you know, maybe have a couple of bets out of that.
Yeah, is that necessarily hurting anybody?
I don't think it is.
All right.
So a couple of opponents.
Miami has won three straight games.
Two of Tagovaloa has remained upright.
As long as he has, he's played really well.
So that's maybe perhaps of more concern.
You've got the Baltimore Ravens
Went to L.A. last night
After a tough loss at Pittsburgh the week before
and beat them in Los Angeles last night and Monday night and football.
I had them going 9 and 8 to open this year
And I was made a fool earlier this year
After that fast start they got to.
I still think they're better than Miami.
I think again
That game's in Houston, right?
The Miami game.
Yes, Miami and Baltimore are both here.
Kansas City's away.
I feel still fucking about that.
I think they're going to win in Jacksonville.
I mean, if you lose to Jacksonville this week with, you don't know whether or not Trevor Lawrence is going to play,
then it will be full implosion mode over there on Kirby.
But it might not be a foregone conclusion that they get to 10 wins, which is strange.
Now, will 9 and 8 win the AMC South?
It absolutely will, but it's not going to give you very much confidence.
Well, it's not going to give you very much confidence because likely on the other sidelines,
in that wild card game would be either the Chargers or now unfortunately because of last night it would be the Baltimore Ravens.
That's right.
Recent history has told you when the Baltimore Ravens are on the other sidelines, it's not gone well for the Texans.
There's almost kind of a mental block with that organization, I think.
Well, I don't think it's a mental block.
I think just Baltimore's been better.
I mean, when were the Texans better in any of those playoff games against Baltimore?
That's a fair point.
I mean, you know, last year, obviously you weren't.
and I mean, I brought it up yesterday.
D'Amico Ryan's at the podium on that Monday afterwards saying,
yeah, we've got to get better on the lines because you saw how much of a difference that was
and how much of a wide gap that is between us and them because they're that much better than we are.
And, I mean, I think that you've probably improved on the defensive side.
You definitely have regressed on the offensive side.
All right, so you've got five games left.
At Jacksonville, you have home for Miami.
at Kansas City,
at home for Baltimore, at Tennessee.
I mean, I would think
at bare minimum you could probably go through,
I don't say bare minimum.
You're going to at least win two.
I think you'd be favored to win three of the five,
which puts you at 10 and 7.
I mean, it does make you the least,
that makes you the 4C, but short of them running the table,
they're going to be the 4C going to the playoffs.
You'll take on the worst wild card,
which I think is going to probably be,
the Los Angeles Chargers, right?
I'd have to go back and look at the standings, but I mean, I think
last night they were matched up with you as the five.
Maybe that loss knocked them all the way down.
Oh, you know what? You'd be the best wild card you'd be taking on, right?
Yeah, it's first. Yeah, 7, 3, 6, 4, 5.
Correct. Yeah.
Oh, no.
So Baltimore could potentially be coming to Houston two times
in the final three weeks of the season.
That's fun.
You know what I also noticed yesterday with our callers, Dan,
is that there were, I wouldn't say there were a lot,
but that would say there was more than one.
That basically said that,
am I so on?
I want to make sure I'm still on.
Yeah, yeah, no, you're good.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we got you loud and clear.
Okay, very good.
That this is year two of the process,
that it's a young coach,
it's a young quarterback,
it's a young offensive coordinator.
D'emico, I should say,
Nick Casario talked about how many close one-score games
went the Texans way last year
and that maybe more difficult.
It was almost like we had a few folks
in a little bit of a backtrack.
Now, again, I would not say that's the majority of the people
that it called yesterday are the majority of the Texans fans out there,
but it felt like there was a greater number than that.
And I wonder if it's a byproduct of this team is coming down to Earth.
it overperformed earlier in the year,
or people are just kind of
preparing themselves for the disappointment of not advancing
as far as they would have seen the Texans go this year?
No, that's the anxiety I talked about.
Because, I mean, you finally felt like this season
with C.J. Stroud performing the way
he did last year, Will Anderson Jr.,
of course, the defensive rookie of the year.
He's coming back. You had to Neil Hunter.
You made all those moves in the offseason.
Like it felt loaded for bear.
It felt like this was going to be the year of all years.
I mean, the only time I think I've ever watched a Texan's team where I kind of looked at
them and said, maybe, was 2011 before Matt Job got hurt.
Like the way that that team was playing before he got his foot rolled up on and got the
Liz Frank injury, they were very much in position to not only get a first round by,
but to also be able to win the entire thing.
And when that happened, and of course Matt Liner,
got hurt. You had to go to T.J. Yates, who did an admirable job. He did a really great job.
I think at that point, though, you're like third team quarterback. I just don't see this becoming
a Jeff Hostelder thing. Like, I just, this is, you know, the team's good. The defense is fantastic.
I just think that, you know, there's still those Baltimore guys. There's still New England out
there. Like, all of those things kind of baked in, you were like, yeah, this, this isn't going to go
fully well. But outside of that,
I mean, this was probably the only other team that I could look at in the
preseason be like, yeah, we might be seeing something special here.
I just don't know how you can build it as
we went and got a great corner with early second round.
The Texans went and got a better running back.
They added a better receiver. Not granted that receivers hurt,
so you can't use it storyline.
You went and spent good money on a couple of free agents
in on the defense.
how do you sell that?
Well, we're still young when I think people leaving training camp.
And maybe it's because of the fake media that was out there that was, you know,
bragging on this team being the best training camp team that they've ever seen in their entire life.
So maybe that's the media is for a fault on this.
But I don't know.
I think we're training.
Training camp tweets.
Oh, man.
So and so.
Nico Collins just owned Derek Stealing on a one-on-on-on-one.
Oh, my God.
What a pass.
Stop.
those stupid ass training camp tweets. You're doing one-on-one with players and shorts and in helmets.
Yeah, exactly. But my point is that I feel like there are people preparing for a softer landing.
I think more irrational people are. But two at the same time, I mean, you know, it's much more
disappointing than this time last year. I mean, I don't remember what the Texans were through 12 games
last year, but I mean, it was all bonus at that point. And we would have been disappointed if they had
gone up to Indianapolis and lost.
But I think, like, once the emotions kind of got out of it, you would have been like,
hey, dude, like, this team probably at best should have been a seven-win team this year.
And they flipped it.
They went 10 and 7.
They made the playoffs.
They won a playoff game.
Like, let's not get too crazy in terms of how upset we are that they didn't go further.
All right.

This is the Matt Thomas show.
1051, Sports Talk 790.
Matt here in Minneapolis.
Dan back in Houston, eating his breakfast sandwich.
Oh, it's been digested.
We're good.
All right, we'll make sure.
Yeah, I kind of went to Bobby Hurley earlier, didn't I?
Danny Hurley, sorry, Danny Hurley.
Well, you're going to have to explain that and do it very succinctly
because nobody cares about college basketball.
That's true.
So, yeah, Danny Hurley lost his mind yesterday at the Maui Invitational
and explained himself afterwards of why he lost his mind.
So that was me explaining myself afterwards.
Do we have audio of this?
And it's really actually not bad audio.
I'm sure we can work on it.
So we'll let that marinate for a second.
And when it's ready to come out of the oven,
we'll go ahead and serve it for everyone.
Yeah, he just was bitching him.
morning. His Yukon Husky's
lost a huge lead late in the game against Memphis
and he was not particularly happy with some of the calls.
I'm not really a huge fan of him calling the other
guy giving a half-assed effort.
That's not your player. Like,
don't do that. Well,
he's, you know, he was being courted
pretty hard by the L.A. Lakers.
And I knew he wasn't going to take that job
because his stick would have lasted about five
seconds in an NBA locker room. Oh, LeBron's
already tired of J.J. Reddick.
We don't know that. You're making
that out. Dude.
Eventually, LeBron is very much the Jerry Jones of the NBA,
where it's never anybody else's fault.
But then the constant is it's always him.
It's always Jerry Jones.
Yeah, I get it.
All right, real quick, and we'll get to more on Jerry Jones next hour
because interesting little tidbit today on his weekly radio show in Dallas.
That'll be a little tease with the top of the next hour.
All right, so Bob Nightgill.
And look, Bob has had a mixed record,
it comes to accuracy on things, but I think he's had a better two years lately than maybe his
previous two before that.
Says in a recent story that he writes for USA today that the Astros would love to have
Alex Breggman back on a six-year deal worth $156 million.
By the way, how good is that?
I mean, imagine someone saying we want you and we want to pay you $156 million for the next
six years of your professional life, no matter what you do.
That's just crazy money.
But not good enough, apparently.
I mean, Regman wants $200 million.
Now, what if that's adding a seventh year to it?
What if that's $6,200, whether that's $7,200, whether that's $8,200, who knows?
The little clip that I saw does not detail how many years that's for.
I don't think, Dan, that the Astros want to go beyond sixth.
And that's where I think the number has been.
It's been consistent.
That would be one of the biggest lengthy contracts.
The Astros have ever given out to any player.
They've never given out a seven.
They sure as hell ain't given an eight out.
I think six is probably at the max where it is,
and I think they've figured out a per dollar value based on inflation
and based on cost of the doing business in baseball.
6-156 to me, and this is so crazy to say because it's stupid.
but it sounds low for what I think
Bregman wants.
That would be what, what does the math say on that?
Well, 25 million a year would be 150.
Oh, I just did it. It's 26.
Okay, 26 a million dollars a year.
It's a lot of money.
It's a lot of money.
Yeah, could buy a lot of athletic apparel with that.
It would keep him in one uniform,
I would think, for his entire career.
I mean, I think he'd be kind of to where Jose Altu,
the deal that he just signed, that maybe he, if he's shown that he's staying relatively healthy
and still playing the amount of games that he plays a season,
that maybe he could get a two, three-year deal and see if you can touch 40,
and he's still somewhat of a productive player.
He could be in that range.
But, yeah, I mean, I didn't necessarily read Nightingale's story to mean that that was, like,
the hard concrete offer.
Like I saw John Hayman's piece about that there was an offer, but I read it more of like that's what the Astros would kind of be in the neighborhood of.
Does that make sense?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
So, I mean, like, which makes a lot of sense.
I mean, because to knowing Dana a little bit from his previous stop in Atlanta, that was their modus operandi.
Like, that's how they went about their business is most of their deals for their guys, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Ozzy Albies, whoever it.
is was that $20 to $25 million range.
And Alexanthopoulos would explain it as I'd much rather have seven or eight guys making
really good money as opposed to one guy who we have to bet the farm on.
And then I've got to try to get creative from there.
Well, if you're Bregman, you thank the Astros for that offer if it's sincere.
And then you go, all right, Scott Boris, here you go.
go beat this.
And I've given you instruction to go get what I think is fair market value.
And maybe Scott's telling this to Brighman saying,
hey, I've seen what's out there.
I saw what Matt Chapman got for the Giants.
You're at least that, if not more.
So maybe we have a, not necessarily a baseline,
but an entry point as to where the market would say
with the team that's had him since day one.
Well, I mean, it's also, though, too.
I mean, you've got to think about it from the,
Astros perspective as well. And again, you know, going back to Dana Brown's previous spot,
they were in this with Freddie Freeman. And it was to a point where they finally said,
we've got to be proactive. I think if nothing else at this moment, Dana Brown, I have no doubt
that an offer has been made. I don't know what the offer is. But it's also to, hey, reach out
to Adomis's people. Reach out to whoever else if we've got to make a trade, whatever it might be.
Like, they're working through contingency plans for that as well. I mean, you even heard him say as
much last week on Astroline, that they're planning for both Bregman being here and Bregman not being
here.
Moral of the story is, Dana Brown has gone through this with experience.
He's not going to be caught flat-footed.
Well, the reality is this, if we believe Nightingale to be, that's the range, that seems
a good range.
Again, I can't go to our audience and say, do you give him more?
Because that's not our job.
We don't handle the budget.
Well, it's not our money.
know what value is.
We kind of know
based off of the guys that are his
position, his age, his success,
his track record, his resume,
and
future potential.
So it seems, it feels
low, but I don't know if it is low.
I mean, like you said,
you know, you got the Matt Chapman deal,
which I can't remember. I think it was about this range.
I think it was like $6.150 or something
like that. And I don't think
Bregman would look if indeed that was,
the six for 156 as what an insult.
Like I can't even believe they think that low of me.
I think that probably the response would be, all right, this is a good starting point.
I mean, what about 175?
And maybe the Astros counter and say, okay, 165.
Like, I think if nothing else, it's a good working start that you can meet somewhere in the middle and be able to get this job done.
six years 151 is the new matt chapman deal so that'd be a little bit more than what again if you're believing with bob nightingales would say is what is out there all right let's get the second hour of the show started we were talking about the dan hurley comment about the officiating we happen to find it for you plus jerry jones comes to his defense of his head coach that's coming up as well gut feelings in one half hour 713 two one two five seven on a second hour matt thomas show
with Ross. Ross finds himself
in Puerto Rico
and we'll have more of that coming up momentarily
on 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt
Thomas show. Here we go with
hour number two of the Matt Thomas show with
Ross. I'm here in
Minneapolis. Ross
finds himself in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Nice to have you with us here on the radio program today.
713-212-5-790
if you want to jump in. We have
gut feelings coming up in one half hour from
now on the news noon. Conner's got NFL rewind at 1230 and Willie Fritz has made a change at
offensive coordinator and we will talk to Willie about that coming up today at 130 plus, believe
it or not. 713-212-5-7. I am here in Minneapolis tonight for the Rockets and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
If the Rockets win this game, they will go to the knockout round of the in-season tournament.
That means they will have won their group. They'll be one of the four teams representing the Western
Conference. They'll have four teams in the Eastern Conference. They'll have four teams in the Eastern
conference. Those two, four teams will meet each other, and then the semifinal
winners will go on to the tournament in Las Vegas, where they'll have a chance to play for
$500,000.
I'm looking at Vanessa Richardson's tweet right here of the NBA Cup Court that they have
down there at the Target Center. Is that what they play? Yeah. It's pretty interesting.
I think your eyes are in for it tonight, calling the action.
See, the wolves are wearing blue uniforms tonight. I'm about to go look at this photo you're
speaking of right now.
take a look. It is a very bright
lime green court.
Oh, it's my God. Oh, my God.
It's a hot mess. You're possibly
in for a tension headache.
Oh, my God.
It is literally lime green.
Oh, yeah. You're not lying.
I wouldn't lead you astray. Why would you
think that? Well, because I lie to you all the time.
Oh, well, I mean, I'm gullible,
so, you know, that's on me. That's not on you.
Okay, fair enough.
Ooh, Lord.
Yeah, can you imagine what the rocket
red court if they decided, hey, we're going to do something really funny here.
We're going all red tonight.
Well, you know, again, they always tell us the uniforms they're wearing the night before,
and they're wearing blue, and I was like, well, if they have a blue court,
it's not going to mesh well.
Lime green court, blue uniforms, yeah, I'm going to wind up having some serious eye issues.
You'd almost be like Mike Tariko on Battle Red Sunday night football,
where he was like, I've got to be honest.
I'm having a tough time seeing these numbers.
Yeah, it's tough.
All right, let's do this real quick before we get to some other news headlines
the day. We were talking about
Dan Hurley. He's the coach at Yukon,
back-to-back national champions.
They're in the Maui Invitational.
By the way, I love Maui.
Oh, it's great. I wish the Rockets could
play in a Maui Invitational.
Oh, it'd be awesome. I mean, you know, in terms
of the Hawaiian Islands, my favorite is Kauai.
But Maui is
pretty nice. It's getting
a little too large and commercialized,
though. I mean, that's kind of, you know,
the other part of it. It's like a smaller
Honolulu. But, yeah,
Yeah, shout out to Fleetwoods, which actually I don't think Fleetwoods is around anymore.
I don't think it made it.
No, but I'm just glad they're having a Maui Invitational after all those, the terrible fires they had a couple of years ago.
So they lost the game to Yukon late.
I don't really, it was like double-digit leave with like three or four minutes left to go, right?
Something crazy like that?
Yeah, I mean, you know, like you said, I mean, not paying a ton of attention to college basketball right now.
I watched a little bit of UNC Dayton last night, but that's the most college basketball I've watched all year.
I got you.
So there was a tough call last night, and it only matter what it was.
It's more about the reaction.
Here's Dan Hurley, the coach at Yukon.
Not particularly pleased with the gentleman with the whistles.
But I had a lot of issues with what went on out there in the game.
That over the back call at that point of the game, there was no attempt to block out.
There was a player on Memphis that made a half-ass effort to rebound that basketball.
and Liam McNeely high-pointed that rebound
for that call to be made at that point in the game
was a complete joke.
And then for me, I don't know what happened.
I might have lost my balance
by the absurdity of the call
or maybe I tripped.
But if I made that call at that point,
I would have ignored the fact that I was on my back
if I made that call.
I would have ignored that.
I would have ignored that.
That was a major, obviously a major.
How you could call that while that game was going on,
the way that game was going on is just beyond me.
But I know I've never seen the one ref before.
I didn't even know he was a college ref,
and then, you know, I'm familiar with the other two, so I'm not surprised.
First of all, Memphis player who half-assioned,
the play. That's hysterical.
It's definitely going to be t-shirts in the
Memphis facility, I'd have to believe.
Like, I think they've already started
printing up half-assed effort.
Well, I can tell you this.
He, I don't know
who finds him. I guess it would have
to be the Big East that would do it, but my
goodness.
See, that's what I was just wondering. I mean, because it wasn't
a Big East game. So, did they even have
the
purview to be
even able to do that? Well, my
guess is if these officials were assigned by, I mean, the, I guess it doesn't really, you know,
these could be other conference officials. I don't even know, but usually you have to, if you're
going to file a complaint against a coach, you go to the conference office to do that.
And then I think if on the Big East, I don't mess with my top dog here, because if you upset him
enough, then he just says, okay, hey, let's go to the Big 12. Let's go somewhere else.
No, Yukon's not going to the Big 12. That's not happening.
we don't want them we don't need them don't need them i mean yeah it's already too spread out as it is
well it's not only that i mean it's also competitive enough as is but you get my point though i mean
there are some programs who are too big to fail and in this case right here i don't think the big east
is barking up that tree yeah i don't know maybe you know he'll probably want up getting an
emmonishment like you know you can't do that again like a slap on the wrist kind of thing right
a strongly word letter if we will oh the old strongly worded letter
You hate those.
713-212-1-2-5-7-90.
If you want to jump in, 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
Let's go to Hondo and say how to Dean on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Dean, good morning.
Thanks for holding.
Hey, Matt.
I have called you a few times.
We lived in Montgomery, lived in Brenham.
Now we're in Hondo.
I'm still big-time Rockets fan.
My wife's a superintendent.
I don't know if you remember that.
it's been a while.
But I try to listen to y'all when I can.
First of all, I'm not even a U of H fan.
I want U of H to crush Connecticut
because Hurley thinks he's the king of basketball,
and he is right now,
but I want U of H to crush them in the tournament.
That's not what I'm calling about.
I understand.
He's a little too big for his bridges right now,
feeling like that's my opinion.
Now he's won it twice, I get it,
But I want you of a project.
We moved over here.
All I get is first off, and it makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
But I had to buy the NBA ticket.
And we've been, my wife loves them.
I love them.
They have looked awesome.
I don't know everything that's going on.
Last game, notwithstanding.
I won't know what.
They're seed.
I know it's early for playoff chances.
I don't, the cup deal is cool.
I get it.
They're doing good.
That would be something.
But I'm talking about the playoffs.
And then I don't know what's up with Cam Whitmore.
I know he could be a little volatile.
But I wanted, and look,
Tar Heason and Aeman are fantastic.
That's a great combo.
I just, if you can comment on that,
and that's really,
Yeah, it seems like we've lost Matt here for a second.
We'll get him back.
But, I mean, with Cam Whitmore, to answer your question there, I mean, I think it's just more or less, he's out of the rotation.
He's a young enough player.
You want to be able to try to continue that development and be able to make sure he gets his minutes.
It's not going to happen up here.
It's more beneficial for him to go down to Rio Grande and be able to get those minutes.
And as the season goes along, let's be honest.
We have injuries.
We have maybe even, you know, the Rockets,
finally around the trade deadline make a trade and he might slot back in but i mean we see what
email you doka wants to do with his rotation and unfortunately for kim whitmore he was in the category
of jayshon tate and for some of the guys that don't get a ton of minutes i mean when stephen adams is
active jock landell doesn't play so i mean that's just really kind of a numbers game when it comes to
that and i don't begrudge the rockets for deciding to move him down for the time being to
try to make sure that he can get those valuable minutes.
So, all right.
We'll work on trying to get Matt back, but it is the Matt Thomas show with Ross,
Dan Matthews, in for Ross.
Calm down a little bit since, you know, being slightly tardy for the show for reasons
outside of my control, but that's okay, all good, holiday season.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
But anyway, it's Dan Matthews.
Connor D. McGoverns behind the glass.
We'll continue with more of the Matt Thomas show with Ross next right here on your home of
the Astros and the Rock.
It's Sports Talk 790.
lunch timers
This is the Matt Thomas show
117 on 790
Sorry about that little disconnect there
Which some of the hotel technology
Is not spectacular
So I went to a plan B
I'm going to assume Dan our previous caller
And by the way thanks to our friends
We're Honda's number one sports station
Besides sports coverage
That's it
I mean rockets and Astros coverage runs deep
In the Honda area
Yeah so thanks to the caller for joining
I think he was asking about Cam went more.
The reality is you play 10 players on an NBA team, most nights, sometimes 9.
And Cam just wasn't making the top 10.
And instead of just sitting here and not playing, they want to go down to the G League and get some shots in and work on a shot.
He wasn't shooting very well at all at any point here was a rocket this year.
He's having a limited time he played.
He just couldn't shoot.
Pretty simple.
Yeah, I mean, and that's what I said too.
I mean, he was kind of in the Jay Sean Tate category.
Jay Sean Tate, I think they kind of look at him.
no disrespect to him as you know they don't necessarily have tremendous future plans for him but for cam whitmore
I think it's a different deal and I mean there's no sense in having him sit up here I mean we see it all
a time in major league baseball hey why is this guy being sent back down well because they're sitting on
the bench they're not getting consistent at bat so they're not getting consistent innings on the mound
right so send them down a sugar land let them let them get that opportunity there and when we need them
we'll call them back up and I mean just because he's down there right now I mean didn't we see this
last year with Tari Eason too as well
and Amen Thompson as well.
I mean, so there's going to come
a time where yeah, he's going to get his opportunity
and when that time is here,
be ready to go. The reality is
and unlike it was
25, 30 years ago, with all these 18
and 19 year olds
playing one year of college basketball
or playing in the G-League for one year,
they're coming up and they're just
not physically
and emotionally ready for the rigors
of a full schedule. I mean, Reed Shepard is
getting a little more
in playing time,
but even read it
would have to say
this is a growing process.
And he's the number one
three pick in the NBA draft.
You know,
it's funny you say that
because I was talking
with a buddy of mine
about this very thing
and just the NBA game
as a whole.
I mean,
there's a reason why
you watched the draft
last year and most of the
players picked were from Europe
because teams look at players
right now coming out of America
and say,
you are not ready.
For those guys that come out of Europe,
they've been playing
professional basketball already.
like they've already gone through at least somewhat of what they can expect.
Whereas, I mean, you know, you have a kid like, for example, everybody was all over Jalen Green.
Oh, man, bust of a pick, second overall.
What did we get here?
Because he grew up being a better athlete and larger than everybody on the floor and was able to get around the block, get to the rim with relative ease.
He tries to come off a pick and roll in this game.
Then he's going to have somebody standing there where he's like, wait a minute.
Somebody standing here?
Well, of course they are.
They've been doing this for 10, 15 years at an incredibly high level.
Yeah, they're just as athletic as you are.
Yeah, the reality is you're just, if these guys had played two or three years in college basketball
and had some time away, they could probably come up and be a little more impactful than they are.
That's why if you get a good rookie early in its first season, like if you're a rookie of the year in the NBA,
that must really mean something because you actually got some rotation time.
So, you know, Cam, I think's got a future.
It's just if the shots aren't falling.
And look, this is a basketball team right now that needs shooting in the worst way.
I mean, it's a 33% three-point shooting team.
It's about a 44% field goal shooting team.
If Can was to strike and get hot, there'd be time for him.
By the way, too, did you see the, somebody threw this out on Twitter of the Reed Shepard dribble to the corner, step back three?
And the caption was, who does that look like to you?
I was like, oh, no, don't do that to him.
He was saying that he looked like
Steph Curry.
No, no, no, no.
It's like, oh, don't do that to him.
That's not fair at all. Don't do that.
No.
But, yeah, look,
he's going to control it.
E. Medoakot has nothing out personally
for Cam Whitmore. He wants to put
the best 10 players out there.
And frankly, if Jalen Green is continuing to struggle
from the perimeter like he has in the last two weeks or so,
there'd be a spot for somebody to get some playing time.
I promise you that.
I absolutely do.
713-212-5-790 7-1-3-212-5-7-90 I have been wrong about a lot of things we all are we
we'd love to be able to say our sports predictions and our analysis are spot on every single time it's not it's not possible
I am stunned at the amount of leash that has been given to mike McCarthy in Dallas
case and point
this is Jerry Jones on his
twice weekly radio show
in Dallas
talking about the future this morning
of Mike McCarthy in Dallas
this season we could be talking about
an extension for Mike McCarthy
well I don't think
that's crazy at all
that's not crazy
and
listen
Mike McCarthy is one
an outstanding coach
I was listening to the
game last night watching
and Aikman was talking about, and he's reiterated that several times publicly, this Super Bowl winning coach.
And Mike McCarthy has been there, done that.
He's got great ideas.
So bottom line is that there's no place in my body language or anything else, have you seen indications about what we're going to be doing relative to.
this staff at the end of this year.
And we shouldn't.
I don't think Mike McCarthy is a terrible coach.
I just think it's a terrible fit.
And unfortunately, Jerry is not going to fire the general manager
and has not fired a general manager
through all of these different coaches he has brought in over the years.
So when in doubt, if you're looking to shift things and have a culture change,
the only person that Jerry Jones is going to fire,
it's not going to be himself, it's going to be the head football coach.
it there feels like to me and and look
Dallas won last week
and very lucky that they did because of the extra point that was missed
but the vibe to me for the Cowboys
is really really
flat and unmotivating
and not that I don't think
and look Mike McCarty's got to bear some of that responsibility
I think Jerry frankly has to do more of it
but I'm stunned that
the term extension in Mike McCarthy
are being brought up in the same sentence right now.
Well, I mean, it's also a couple of different reasons that I have to believe
Jerry on this is number one, Jerry doesn't have much more time.
I mean, let's just be honest here.
I'm not trying to put the guy...
In life or as a general manager?
In life.
I mean, he...
Yeah.
I mean, it's just father time eventually gets you.
And, I mean, look at how much he yo-yoed Jason Garrett.
I mean, how many times at the end of a season, Matt, did we say to our
ourselves, oh, it's Monday, it's Black Monday, Jason Garrett's going to get it, and then we get
nothing. And then it's like for days where even people on the Cowboys beat would be like, all right,
Jerry, like, what's the deal here? Are you firing him? Are you keeping them? Like, what's going
on here? And then eventually they'd have the press conference. Oh, we're all in. We're going to,
you know, go for it. And, you know, all of the things that the fan base, I'm sure, just loves.
And, I mean, I think the other part of it as well is, I mean, it's kind of hard to argue against
what Mike McCarthy has done outside of the playoffs for the previous seasons.
I think they've won 12 games in every single season.
So maybe this is Stephen getting in Jerry's ear and being like, hey, look, let's be honest
with ourselves.
We didn't do a good enough job of building him up a roster that's good enough to be able to
get past the point that we want him to get past.
So we've got to wear that on our end.
And it's also too as well, kind of again, to the first point I brought up of not having
much time left, I mean, you bring on a new coach.
That's a new coaching staff.
It's a new feeling out period.
There's an adjustment.
There's all these different types of things that I'm just not sure that Jerry wants to do.
Then why wouldn't you leave your lasting legacy on going into a coach that would maybe inspire that football team?
Because it looks like to me that Mike McCarthy, especially what Micah Parsons said two weeks ago, he's not inspired by him.
Because the coach isn't the problem, Matt.
Like that's the whole thing as well is Jerry will never admit that.
But it's an endless cycle.
I mean, I've told you the cycle of Cowboys
Fandom and the way that it is.
I mean, there's tons of ups and downs
in terms of the ups are enough to keep
people hoping, yeah, hey,
finally, we'll beat the 49ers,
we'll beat the Packers, you won't.
But the constant is Jerry.
Like, it doesn't matter how much
you change this. If you draft
crappily and you don't really do
well in terms of your free agent signings
and you try to win the offseason
of bringing in, I don't know, an aging
Vaughn Miller or somebody like that,
You're not doing anything other than just repeating the same things that you keep doing.
And when you keep repeating the same things that you're doing,
it's incredibly dumb to think that you're going to get different results.
It's amazing to me that his kid, Stephen, who's not a kid, he's an old adult himself,
hasn't taken the keys from dad's car.
Seriously, so you can't drive anymore.
I mean, like basically a hostile takeover, like what Kindle Roy tried to do in secession.
Ding.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
It's a TV show in fairness.
It doesn't matter.
By the way, anytime Connery, any multimedia reference, television, film, you must ding Dan
Matthews on that.
Ding.
There you go.
There you go.
So keep that in mind when I bring up my pardon my take references later, I guess.
There you go.
Even better.
Even better.
There you go.
That's Dan Matthews.
I'm at. Thomas.
We are with you today until 2 o'clock.
This afternoon, Rockets and Wolves here from the Twin Cities.
It is time now for us to get your gut feelings.
We'll give you ours when we return.
713212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
This is a segment where you just call in, if you so choose, and you make predictions.
That's very simple.
Just make a prediction on what you think is going to happen.
Anything in sports.
Cowboys, Texans versus Jaguars, Rockets Tonight, Houston Cougars, I don't matter.
Life in general.
Give us a gut feeling.
Let us know it's 713-212-5-790.
I want to ask you to use your Shell FCU debor or credit card for in-store online purchases between now and December the 31st because you could be one of five lucky $1,000 winners.
You're like, Matt, I don't, not a member of the ShellFCU.
Well, what are you waiting for?
Visit shellfccuh.org or call 713-844-1100.
That's 713-844-1100.

that ShellfcU.org for the Shell Federal Credit Union.
Listen up, girls and boys.
This has been so appealing.
You know, they got a gut feeling.
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas show.
All right, here we go.
713, 21, 212, 5, 790.
If you want to jump in, 713, 212, 5, 790.
If you have a gut feeling, a sports prediction,
if you call it, you get it right,
you call us back and you brag about it.
If you're wrong, we just forget about it unless it's completely absurd.
Connor, how did we do last week?
All right, Matt, you had the Rockets going to the knockout round of the in-season tournament,
so yet to be seen.
Yep.
Texans beat the Titans by three touchdowns.
Did I really say that?
You did say that.
Oh, ouch.
Astros will not make any moves, significant moves by winter meetings.
The Astros do not sign Verlander, and the Cougars beat Baylor.
Oh.
You hear that, folks?
I've just poured my soul to you.
Look at all that stuff.
Either that's an incomplete or flat out wrong.
It reminds me in my college days, Dan Matthews.
Who are you telling, man?
I still have bad dreams of I've missed a test.
I didn't even know I was signed up for a class.
My parents are going to kill me.
Then I wake up and I say, oh, yeah, I graduated.
I'm good.
Same thing.
I used to cheat a lot in high school.
school and I have this and the same teacher is always on me to turn these papers in and I'm like
oh my god I'm going to graduate from high school and then I realize I go to my office when I wake up
in the morning and my diploma is in there yeah mom and dad can't get upset about it anymore I mean
I walk the stage I had the cap and gown on we're we're good all right how did dan do I don't know
yeah how do dan had the rocket sweeping the homestan winning the next three games oops damn
Saturday game. Texas will cover
the eight and a half against the Titans.
Oops. Boy. And Verlando
re-signs with the Astros. Yeah, that's an incomplete.
To be determined. Yeah, that's an incomplete.
Yeah, these, my stone cold locks,
it's been a little bit of rough sledding
this year. And the games that I should be good
at, the college games,
I've been pedestrian at best.
I had the Rockets winning their next three
straight as well, so that didn't happen.
I said Alpi was going to get a triple double
by this time this week, which I believe
Didn't happen.
No, I want to say that he did on the Wednesday game, no?
No, he had 31 points and 12 rebounds, but only two assists.
I thought he had a rocket's rap scene.
He only had two triple doubles this year.
Oh, I said triple double double, not double double.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sorry, context.
Texans be the Titans by at least 15.
That didn't happen.
I said Nicka Calls had a touchdown, though.
He did, and I shouted him out for that.
Good for you.
Yes, as soon as he got in there to make it,
1714, I was like, I believe
that was a Connor McGovern gut feeling.
So very good CMD.
And then, yeah, man, I believe you said, oh, Ohio
State, Ohio State beats Indiana, which
did happen. Yeah, they destroyed him.
By the way, we got the college football rankings coming out
tonight, right? Indiana's got
to plummet, correct? Yes?
Not if you believe Danny Cannell,
but, uh, what did Danny Connell say?
Oh, he just, it's
basically anything that's against the popular
opinion and can be as
ridiculous on its, on its surface.
as possible, Danny Cannell will say on Twitter
when it comes to college. Okay, well, you've got to explain what he said,
that's what I'm saying. That Indiana
belongs. That's ridiculous.
Anybody that watched a game, they were
a fish out of water.
I mean, I like good stories and everything, but
my gosh, I mean, let's be
clear. That was
when Ohio State decided
to turn it up a little bit, they could have won that game by
more. They had a couple of red
zone non-scores.
I mean,
including even like a turnover on downs.
Like these, Matt, all these points you're bringing up are exactly the same points that people,
including Chipper Jones, started to throw back.
What?
Yeah, he got involved because Chipper's a big Florida fan.
And so, of course, then he made it about Knowles and Gators with Danny.
It was Twitter piling on.
Like, Twitter is very much the hallways at high school of if, you know,
one of the popular kids is trying to beat up one of like the nerdier kids that
everybody will then circle around and push the nerdy kid back in and, you know, have them get punched.
Yeah, that's what Twitter is.
All right.
So, this proves to you, ladies and gentlemen, that if you have any gut feelings, don't feel bad about getting them wrong.
We're human on this show.
And we only brag when we win.
If we get wrong, we just quickly move on like we're going to do this week.
Oh, Lord.
All right.
My son Peyton is in class right now, my middle son.
So I can tell you that Texas is going to be at A&M and College Station on Saturday.
I think it's going to be a close game.
I think that it's going to be the loudest game that maybe Kyle Field has ever had before in terms of like, you know,
they measure the decibels and whatnot.
Right.
It's the most, you know, it's the most expensive game ever in regular season college football history in the open market.
I saw that.
I think the cheapest ticket is touching about $750.
average ticket I think is
$1,600 at this point
Not in this economy, brother.
But you know what?
Those people that are looking to get that
can afford it. Oh, no.
And that's the thing too that
I brought this up earlier in the year
and especially in the SEC,
this is prevalent. Like I was
telling people Georgia was going to have
a half full stadium
at DKR for that Texas
game. And they're like, no way. I said no,
these people have tons of money.
and they spend it because they are rabid for their team.
And it turned out to be darn close.
So, yeah, people of major college football programs, especially in the SEC,
they'll fork out the money, even money they don't have.
Yeah.
Right now, Texas is a six-point favorite.
If I was a betting man on this, I would probably give the Longhorns.
I'd probably give the Aggies of six and still take the Longhorns.
That sounds fair.
I'm picking 31, 21, somewhere in that range.
well then the longhorns would cover correct yeah so i'm saying i'm giving the aggies of points and i'm
i'm going to still take texas yeah okay all right so that's my first prediction uh rockets win tonight
and grab i'm going to add to it they're going to win tonight and they're going to grab that spot
in the uh knockout round of the in season tournament okay and i'm willing this because that means
I'm only than one win away from that game from a trip to Vegas.
Speak it into existence, Matt.
That's what I'm trying to do.
I don't like my Cougars chances at BYU, just saying.
I mean, it's going to be really cold, and our offense has not scored in the last couple weeks,
and we got a new coordinator for this week.
I mean, I'd like to say it's going to be close, but I've not, I mean, our defense has played pretty well,
but, man, BYU is in a bad move.
They've, what, lost two straight games.
Still got a chance of the Big 12 tournament,
a Big 12 championship game.
So I'm going to, I'm going to say in the Houston BYU game,
that is a sports empty stayaway.
Okay.
All right.
What do you guys got?
I, too, believe that Texas wins the game on Saturday.
I actually do think that they cover.
I just think that that's a pretty high, emotional letdown for A&M last week.
And I just don't think they're there yet.
And I don't think that's a huge sin against Mike Elko in the program.
And then we can even do a further one that will be incomplete for next week.
But Texas beats Georgia in the rematch.
Oh, you're already calling your shot of who's going to be in it.
Okay.
Against Georgia, yeah, for the SEC championship game.
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah, I'm going with that.
Yep.
I had actually said, I actually told Ross many weeks ago,
I thought that when Texas played Georgia earlier this year,
that wasn't going to be the last time they were going to play each other.
Okay.
A couple of quick ones from me.
Go ahead. What else you got?
I've got, you know, Dana Brown has said maybe a platoon option over at first base, a right-handed bat.
One year deal, Paul Goldschman.
Really?
Yeah.
Going with the Houston ties, huh?
Yeah.
One year, maybe with an option for a second.
But, yeah.
I mean, you don't have to have him be an everyday guy.
He could split with John Singleton.
But if he starts to get going and becomes the Paul.
Goldschmidt that we hope he still could be, then maybe he becomes your everyday guy.
But that, and unfortunately, Matt, I think the Rockets lose tonight.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
I've got to go with my gut.
By the way, Paul Goldsmith last year with the Cardinals, 245 with 22 home runs, 65 RBI's 147 hits.
Yeah, get Christian Walker out of your brain.
Like, that's not happening whether whatever happens with Alex Breggman.
It's not.
Dana Brown is pretty much said as much.
that that's an edict from up high.
We're already paying a first basement.
We're not even using in our organization.
So get creative over it first.
All right.
Connor, what do you got?
I'll have the Rockets speeding the Timberwolves tonight to advance to the knockout round.
I like it.
I'll say Texans defeat the Jaguars and Joe Mixen has two touchdowns.
Oh, my.
A double dose of Joe Mixin.
Okay.
And then, yeah, I'll say UC beats Tuxa A&M and Missouri beats Arkansas.
Well, of course you're going to say Missouri.
beats Arkansas.
Yeah, I have to.
I mean, isn't Arkansas like two wins or something like that?
I'm just kidding, they're not that bad.
No, they're bowl eligible.
What do they call that?
Is that a rivalry game between Missouri and Arkansas?
Yeah, it is a rivalry game.
Is that like a teeth optional game or what?
It's the battle for the Ozarks.
They used to play on Friday after Thanksgiving.
Yeah.
That's how you know nobody was watching.
By the way, I want A&M and Texas playing at 7 o'clock
on Thursday nights like it was when I was a kid.
They've kind of gone away in college football from the Thursday night game
because much like the NBA did to...
The NFL took over.
That's it.
I mean, the NFL looked at the NBA for Christmas Day and said,
oh, that's your day, that's cute.
Watch what we do.
Yeah, NFL's taking over everything.
Got Black Friday game.
They've got Christmas Day games.
Poor NBA.
NBA is like, this is our chance to show.
We can put five games on.
All right.
Outside of LeBron playing against the Celtics, who cares?
that's right two NFL games we'll go for that instead
all right look another nix and 76ers game awesome
I'm not watching
yeah you know I was going to say that noon game nobody watches anyway
you don't you're only start picking up those NBA games
oh you're trying to make the Nets happen that's cute
yeah I'm still not watching
well hold on let me see what the let me see what the Christmas games are
are they're going to be any good this year let's take a
sure they're pedestrian at best
yeah all right 713212 570 if you have a gut feeling
that you want to get in the next segment
It's yours.
I'm not moving on.
But let me see what we got.
Okay, we got Spurs, Knicks.
Ne.
Timberwolves, Mavericks.
Fart noise.
Sixers, Celtics.
Same noise.
Lakers, Warriors, duh.
Nuggets Suns.
Yeah.
That NFL slate's looking pretty good.
We have like a Las Vegas Bowl or like a Hula Bowl or something that day.
Are you ready for this?
Are those five games the best record?
the best record in that group is the Warriors at 12 and 5.
Okay, so they beat LeBron and the Lakers by 25,
and all Mike Breen, Doris Burke,
and everybody will be able to talk about is,
oh, the job that JJ Reddick is doing here with this roster,
Austin Connect, Dalton Connect.
Austin, Austin, Austin.
Yeah, yeah, there you go.
713.
See, that's how important it is.
Oh, man.
713, 212, 5s.
It's not important enough to.
No, you will.
I mean,
if Don't connect keeps it in three-porters like he is,
you'll be,
you'll know his name well enough.
Oh, great.
Well,
I can't wait to see it on the shallow end pool TV shows.
Oh, listen to you.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
If you've got a gut feeling,
let's hear it now
before we move on to the news at noon
coming up in about 50 minutes.
What is today's a day to do?
Believe it or not,
I got to write this.
I'm not used to this.
I need Ross Pack.
That's hurtful, man.
You don't think I'm creative enough?
I've seen your work.
It's not.
I mean, you've tried.
You have the news and noon to worry about it.
I think Matt's hosting the rest of the show by himself.
Oh, come on.
I'm just teasing.
Sort of.
I was going to say, you were almost back, but that last one right there.
All right, you're definitely a great backup.
We appreciate it very much.
713-212-5-790.
Oh, you know what we can do?
Why don't we honor Mac Brown?
I got fired today at North Carolina.
That is a perfect one.
And you know what, Matt?
That's the one that I was going to go with.
All right. Well, I'm going to start working on it right now.
Got feelings in right now. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
11-46 on Sports Talk 7-90.
Lunch-timers.
This is the Matt Thomas Show.
1151, Sports Talk 790.
We have the news noon coming up in about 10 minutes from now.
We've got news on a football coach being hired, a football coach being fired.
We have the Rockets.
We have Monday Night Football from last night.
We have Damiko Ryan speaking to the media yesterday.
All that as part of the news at noon coming up in about 10 minutes from now.
At 1230, we'll have the NFL rewind, some little nibbles that you did not catch.
Connor has been combing the NFL wires and looking at seeing what's happening out there in the world of professional football.
We'll have it for you at 1230.
Willie Fritz is going to join us at 1.30 today.
Kevin Barbay, his offensive coordinator, he relieved him of his duties this morning.
Sean Bell, the quarterback's coach, and will be the play caller.
for this Saturday's game at BYU.
713-212-5-7-9.
If you want to squeeze in a gut feeling between now and the top of the hour,
7-1-3-212-5-7-9-0.
Dan, what else we're thinking about today?
We've kind of going over a little bit of everything,
because am I something I'm missing at this point?
You know, that's what I'm trying to think about, too, as well.
I think we've pretty much covered it.
I mean, you know, we got the Texans ad nauseum,
a little bit of the overflow from yesterday,
and still,
I follow the same rules you do.
If we've covered it, it's still fair game.
So 713, 2, 112, 5, 790.
Enough Rockets talk.
You know, we've gotten into the Bregman situation as well.
Got feelings.
6 for 156, by the way, is what Bob Nightgill says the Astros range would be.
Right.
If that's what you believe.
And it doesn't feel like it's a crazy number.
I mean, it's pretty much right in line with what they've done.
I mean, what was the, what was the Karea offer that?
Correa was like, yeah, you insulted me.
Not even close, which in hindsight,
probably would have been the best thing that Correa could have done.
More guaranteed money, that's for sure.
Easily.
Yeah.
No.
So, I mean, that's part of it as well.
And, you know, a lot of people get hung up on the Ken Rosenthal, you know,
line that he said about could be looking in the range of like what Mani Machado got,
which was like, I think like 11 years 300 plus.
But his point was, he did clarify it on his podcast.
he did say, I think that's what he would want to strive for.
Not that he would ask for it.
The term of a correct, correct?
No, Bregman.
Oh, there's no, he's not getting 10 years.
But his point was, is that that's why he believes that the contract, you know,
at least his wish would be to be more towards that than towards what he's eventually going to get.
He's probably going to get a 6-7-year 165 to 185 range.
Well, he said, again, if you believe a Bob Nightingale said he wants $200 million.
So if that's, if he's like, if that's the golden number, then it's going to have to be a longer deal, eight years somewhere in that range.
I mean, I love Alex.
I don't know if he's a $30 million ball player.
I want an endless suite at the top of the win.
I mean, let's see who's got a better opportunity.
Well, he actually could afford that with the money he's already made.
Oh, easily.
Yeah.
Endless line of credit.
hell he could probably buy Churchill downs all that horse racing stuff he likes i was gonna say
he's he's quite he's quite the horseman maybe he wants to be that's my last contract that that's
that i can go rest with 200 additional million dollars coming my way however how many years it takes
to me to get that 200 million dollars no this is the one where you where you go for rich i mean
because you're exactly right i mean like i said he might get a two with a third year option at the
end of his career, but that one will probably be in the $14, $15 million range, which, I mean,
that's nothing to sneeze at.
But no, this is the one where he's going to get the most money.
It's kind of like we see in the NFL all the time of players when they're upset why they
get franchise tagged because they're like, no, I want as much guaranteed money as possible so
that when you cut me, at least I got my money.
Yeah, let's go to Brian and Pearland on 790.
Hi, Brian.
Thanks for holding.
Hey, guys, I just got a gut feeling for you.
one that I know you guys will both hopefully root for on Saturday.
I'm calling my shot now.
Going to the Taps finals will be the St. Thomas Eagles with a win over Liberty Christian.
I like it.
Saturday as well.
I will be up at Kyle Field and they and will get their 13 year redemption.
I'm going on the record now.
They will win it with the last second field goal the way just, or the way they got beat 13 years ago.
So they will win it with a walkoff field goal to.
ruined Texas chances that have
going to the SEC title game
and possibly the college football
playoff. I like it. Eagle
Fight never dies. Yeah, is there a
spread on that St. Thomas game?
I do not see one
on the taps.
I don't think there would be.
I was not anticipating there would be one.
We're going to have to check in with the
Memorial Book and see what type
of action they're taking right now, where the sharp money
is. Yeah, that's crazy. Thank you, Brian.
I got to say this.
and Ross will get mad at me, but he's
47,000 miles away, so I don't care.
My son, my middle son,
wears everything Aggies on his heart,
and it crushed him to see them lose to Auburn last week.
So I'm purely for selfish reasons
rooting for A&M to win this week,
because I want my boy to be happy.
That's also, too, I mean, look, you know, Texas fans,
they've got everything, they remind you,
they've got everything.
Let them have a little bit of heartache
every once in a while.
Oh, we lost to Alabama in the national championship game.
So what?
Nobody's thinking that.
What?
For Texas?
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I was going to say, no, I don't think anybody feel sorry for anybody at this point, right?
No, that's my point.
Nobody, like, you know, it's okay for them to lose a hard-fought game.
And, oh, we didn't make the college football playoff.
Oh, shucks.
Maybe next year when you give two more kids a Lamborghini, maybe you'll get
back there. No, wait a minute. We can't do that anymore.
It's all fair. It's all fair now. Everything's fine.
No, I get that. Pay, pay, pay. No, I get that. And look, I don't begrudge them for doing it,
but it's just also, too, as well. I'm going with the mindset of this would mean a lot more to
A&M fans than I think it would mean to Texas fans. Because there's a lot of people who think
no matter what. I disagree. Texas has a chance play for a national championship. Are you kidding?
I think they still get in if they lose this game.
You're probably right, but seating will matter.
I think, right?
Okay, fine.
So maybe, you know, you get a home game for the round that is outside the top four,
and maybe you've got to go to, I don't know, Tennessee for the next one.
I'm trying to think, I'm looking at the Marriott rate right now.
If you want to stay at the Town Place Suites College Station, which is a really borderline
Marriott, not terrible, 593 for the night.
That's not bad.
That's not, I mean, $600 for a hotel room these days.
I mean, this game, not crazy.
I just, I think you're probably also, too.
I mean, this is, you know, it's funny how, like, major southern state universities are in, like, the most, like, circuitous routes to get there from major cities.
Like, none of them have them have to go to these, like, state roads, like, 290 and Highway 6 to be able to get over there.
But, I mean, I think you probably have a lot of people who will be driving in from Austin or from here and going back home.
Well, I know is that I could probably sell my son's apartment for a night and probably make two grand, but you know what?
Oh, dude, Airbnb like crazy.
He's got his brother and his mother staying with him, so there's no room.
Meanwhile, I'm going to watch Mike Cougars play the BYU Cougars in 12-degree weather.
No, no sharing spaces outside of an airplane with total strangers.
Like, there was a buddy of mine who used to always want to do the shared Uber, and we had a really, really weird guy.
that got in it with us and I looked at him and I said never again.
I will pay for the R Uber next time.
I was like, we're never doing this again.
All right.
12 o'clock, news at noon is straight ahead.
We'll start to get the headlines the day, get you back on the phones,
and we have the NFL Rewind.
Bottom of the hour here on Sports Talk 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
1203 Sports Talk 790.
Matt here from Minneapolis.
Ross is off today.
He is in Argentina.
Dan Matthew's in our studios with us today with you until 2 o'clock.
We have the NFL rewind coming up at a half an hour.
Believe it or not, today all things about Mac Brown,
and that's part of today's news at noon.
And we go to the news desk.
The Les Nestman of...
Well, actually, that's not.
It would be Ted Baxter to some here in Minneapolis.
The Ted Baxter of Houston Sports.
There you go.
Dan Matthew.
There you go.
Harvey or whatever the guy's name was.
and die hard. All right. Rockets
in NBA Cup game action
in the night. Minneapolis is Matt you just talked about.
Taking all the Timberwolves.
A win, they move forward to the knockout
round for a chance to get to Vegas
for the in-season tournament semis.
And I wish them nothing but the
very best. Hopefully.
Hopefully. What's the
pregame meal the night before up there
in Minnesota? Like what's the...
I actually went to a seafood restaurant last night
where I had some
clam chowder and I
I had a hot fish sandwich.
The batter was really hot.
Seafood in Minneapolis.
It's underrated.
It's a good fish up here.
A lot of lakes.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
No, ice fishing all of that.
But, I mean, you know, I don't know.
I just, I think of like upper Midwest, you know, Shepherds Pie, maybe some chili.
Oh, Shepherds.
I don't like pies like that.
Really?
I don't like casseroles.
What's, you know, I do.
I'm a huge fan.
Maybe some meatloaf, some mashed potatoes.
I would do that.
I got an unpopular take.
I think King Ranch Chicken is disgusting.
Like, I don't even know what it is.
Like, I hear people talk about it all the time.
So it's basically like with like tortillas in it.
Yeah, my wife makes it and all the kids hated, I hate it.
But she's like, how do you hate King Ranch Chicken?
I said, because it's a gross casserole.
See, I'm all about the casseroles.
I mean, it's like if it's all going to mix together anyway, why not just go ahead and start the process early?
All righty then.
All right.
former Texas head coach Mac Brown
out at North Carolina. He's going to coach
the Tar Heels for their game against
NC State. Second stint
there with UNC,
44 and 32.
They're 6 and 5 this season.
I don't know much about
what he's done there. I know there was a nice
warm story coming back a couple of years ago,
but I mean, Mac
is 73 years old.
I mean, he's got plenty of money.
Him and Sally can go back and
just retire. He can do some television
if he wanted to.
He loved it, by the way.
He loved doing TV.
Every single time I talked with them
when he was at UNC,
he would talk about how that experience
really gave him a respect for the media.
And, I mean, that's going to be interesting to see
if Bill Belichick gets back in,
if he's still kind of the same way with the media that he was,
because it might just be like, hey, you know what,
you guys aren't so bad.
Yeah, I could see him doing some studio work, whatever,
not traveling a whole lot, but I, yeah, I mean,
And, yeah, I mean, he's done everything humanly possible.
He's one of the greatest college football coaches of all time.
And when you didn't get on his bad side, he loved you.
If you got on his bad side, you lost your job.
That's.
And also, too, I mean, what we in the southeastern part of the country
would call the Chicken and Green Bean circuit, you know, the keynote speaker at the, I don't know,
making touchdown club, at the Little Rock touchdown club, the Houston touchdown club.
Like that's, that's what Mac Brown will be.
Chicken and bake and green beans, circa?
I've never heard of it.
I mean, you've been to enough, like, banquets and things like that,
where it's, you know, that or London broil or something like that.
Like, it's a mass-produced meal.
That's nice enough, but everybody eats the same thing.
The rolls, the salad, the same chocolate cake.
You know how these things go.
You know what they're doing now these days?
They're doing a lot of puddings with these massive meals, and it's not good.
I'm not a big pudding fan.
I like it.
If it's done well enough, it's got to be more of like a custard.
though. I got you. All right. What else you got?
Jerry Jones says we heard
the audio earlier saying it's not crazy to think
that Mike McCarthy could receive a contract
extension to remain the head coach of the
Cowboys. And it's funny, you know, Matt,
I was talking about this with Will Cuncle
and someone else the other day
outside the Texans locker room.
The Cowboys can honestly finish the season
8 and 9. And if that
happens, I think that Jerry says
he rallied the guys.
We didn't do a good enough job
building the roster on our end. Let's
So let's run it back next year.
And we get a healthy DAC and we go from there.
It was kind of a half, Jerry, impersonation.
I didn't go all the way in.
You know, it's hard for me to even try to guess what he wants to do
because I think today when Word travels around the Dallas sports fans
that Mike McCarthy may be getting an extension,
I think people are going to be shell-shocked if they aren't already.
Like I said, I was surprised they haven't made a move before now.
but if you're talking about extending a coach,
and again, I don't think Mike McCarthy's a bad coach.
I just think there needs to be a complete overhaul.
Sometimes you've got to make more changes.
The problem is if you're the number one problem of these issues,
then I guess just keep people around close to you
that aren't going to argue with you and aren't going to fight back.
My guess is Mike McCarthy's like,
you know what, you just give me the roster,
I'll do the best I can.
He's still going to give Cowboy fans enough hope
to continue to shell out money
and go to AT&T Stadium.
and go out to training camp and follow them on the road.
You know, it's, I'm telling you all, it's an endless cycle.
And the cycle that keeps spinning it is Jerry.
Like, no coach, no player, no anything is going to change that as long as Jerry is still there.
Fair enough.
All right.
Back to college football.
Quick mention here, Rice, hiring Davidson coach Scott Abel, Abel.
I'm not really sure how to say his name.
but he's going to be the next head coach at Rice.
He was 47 and 28 since arriving at Davidson in 2018.
I like Rice.
It's an outstanding institution of higher learning.
They just don't care about athletics.
And we should not pretend that we think that they care about athletics.
They just don't.
I mean, I wish nothing but the very best,
but they just don't put money into it.
It's an afterthought.
The central administration doesn't care.
There's a few alums that care.
They don't draw people.
I mean, Rice would better serve either dropping down a level or just stop competing.
It's just, it's, it, I feel too bad for those kids because I think they're sold, hey, come to this really insanely awesome academic institution and look at our facilities and they get there and they're like, oh, nobody cares.
Chances are if you're going to Rice for anything that's not baseball, that you know.
Baseball's terrible too right now.
It's, it's down.
It's not what it used to be.
But, I mean, you still, I mean, the Astros drafted a guy out of baseball.
Rice this year. So there's still players that have an opportunity to make it to the next level.
But yeah, if you're going to play football or basketball at Rice, you're going there with
the express purpose of I'll play college sports and then I'll go be a financial guy living
up in New York or oil and gas or something like that. Like you're going there with the express
purpose of getting a really good education and setting yourself up for life.
Yeah, got a text from a listener. It says King Ranch Casserol is A solid take. Thank you for
very much. There you go. See?
Look, yesterday you had some people
on the Twitter sphere that were against you
and today they're on your side. They all love
me today. That's how Twitter works.
We're going to dive into a little bit of
hockey just because it involves a former
hockey player, so Connor, feel free.
Former NHL enforcer
Paul Bissonette
involved in a
six, or I guess with him, it's seven way,
seven way
fracas at a
popular restaurant that we know
here in this town that serves salads with hot bacon dressing.
Really good burgers and fries, other things on there.
The serving staff wears black shirts.
I think you know the place I'm talking about.
They're not a sponsor.
But apparently it was a group of six drunk golfers who refused service and started to get
a little disrespectful with the restaurant staff.
Well, Bissinette says he goes to this said restaurant that was in the Scottsdale area
and got involved.
tried to break it up, but then also to him being a former NHL enforcer,
let the guys know like, hey, I'm not going to stand for it either.
Well, the six got arrested, and Bissinette went online to talk about that he was at dinner.
He goes there quite a bit.
The staff's incredible.
The food's great.
All of those different types of things.
One point, a bit of a ruckus going on at the bar.
A bunch of drunk golfers.
Things obviously continue to escalate.
Then one guy was asked to leave, and one guy kept getting in the man.
dangerous face, put his hands on him, and it went on for about 30, 45 seconds.
And then it was finally broken up, and cops showed up and arrested the six guys.
I'm trying to think about the place that has hot bacon dressing.
I think I'm at a lot.
Don't overthink it.
Don't ever think it.
It's named after a city.
Hot bacon dressing after a city.
They've also...
Oh, oh, oh, oh, is it?
But they don't call that anymore.
Spenichardichoke dip.
Yeah, they don't call it.
Houston's anymore. They called something else.
Oh, I know, but I mean, I still remember it
as, you know, there's Kirby
location, one off Richmond.
Yeah.
All right. There you go. Good call. Good pull on your part there. So
he went to have dinner and he got to fight with people.
Well, I mean, they started it. Stop me if you've heard something new.
Yeah. They started it though with being, again,
disrespectful and even almost getting physical with the restaurants
manager. And Paul Bissinette, like you said, he's a regular there.
And he said, no, this isn't going to happen. And
I'm a guy that showed during my career.
I'll throw hands.
So you want to go that route?
We can go that route.
There you go.
You're not going to get hockey fights at the high-end restaurant.
Talk for me.
Any of them are showing the marketplace.
I can tell you that.
Have you ever seen or been involved in a restaurant or bar brawl?
Well, I've been involved in a brawl in a pool hall.
Okay.
That served booze, but I was also underage and shouldn't have been there.
Did you hit somebody with a pool cue?
or did they get you?
No, I hit somebody with a pool stick.
Yeah, pool cue.
That's it.
Yeah.
So my friend
poked a girl
and he did it intentionally
and he acted like it wasn't intentional
and the boyfriend saw it.
And then that's when everything
going crazy.
So then I was helping my friend
and I took the pool stick
and hit it over the back of the guy.
And then the guy turned around
and we ran out.
They started ringing the bell
at Bullick
really and we ran quickly because I was 17 years old I shouldn't have been there and drinking certainly
shouldn't have been there doing that so it's like that part in the movies where you know the the much
bigger guy gets hit with the pole stick and then turns around it is like oh now you're getting
the business that's exactly how it turned out the story you could have told if you got a shiner
from that matt no no are you telling me I was a mascot of my high school I found it got in a minor
in possession oh and then thrown in jail I had a lost
everything. I wasn't going to do that.
So it would have sent you down the wrong path
in life, so we wouldn't even have the Matt Thomas show
with Ross. Yeah, but at least have a good story out of it, right?
I mean, I've had that at least. I mean, come
on. Many people have found their ways to the
airwaves with questionable paths.
I think you would have been fine. What bothered me was?
You would have persevered. My buddy,
I was like, don't, I know what he was going to do.
I could see it from a mile away. I said, don't do
this. This guy is going to beat your ass,
and he did it anyway.
Yeah, that's a
tough situation to be in because
you've got bullheaded friends and you're just like short of telling them dude if something happens
I'm not jumping in for you like I'm not getting involved in this and then of course you're friends so you
have to all right that's the news at noon thank you very much bottom of the hour we have uh ross's
nf al rewound but he's not here it's going to be connor's nfl rewine we have that for you we are welcome
you at 713212 5790 713 212 5 790 demico spoke a couple more comments from him

Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
Matt here in Minneapolis.
Dan back in Houston. We thank all of you
for listening to us today. Twitter
interaction. Calls are certainly welcome
here on the Tuesday edition of the show. Tomorrow,
I will be in Philadelphia. Chris Cordy's going to fill in. We got a
busy show tomorrow. We have
E-M-A-Doka, Dr. Roe.
Shut your bum ass up.
We got the rotten five.
We may have an A&M Texas preview guest on.
You don't know what it's going to happen between 10 and two tomorrow.
Do you think with EMA and just slight suggestion, ever an in-person on the road, hand him a headset, you guys talk?
We're all just there for the conversation.
Would that ever happen?
No, because the equipment I bring with me only has one inputs.
That's too bad.
Why don't I want him to come in my room?
or why don't want to go to his room?
I mean, I just think, you know, it's an in-person personal conversation that we just get to be a part of.
That's it.
Okay.
I could ask, I don't know if it's going to happen, but I usually catch him at lunchtime, so it's easy, you know.
Maybe the boundary of the phone is a good thing.
I mean, you guys get the personal conversation before the game.
Yeah, before the game, yeah.
See, you don't want to come across as unreasonable.
I get that.
I get that.
It was a bad idea by me.
Why don't we strike that from records?
Speaking of, you threw out for people who normally don't get a chance to call in earlier.
Yeah.
Would you be open to maybe educators, teachers, superintendents, coaches.
We had a superintendent's wife called the show.
And that's what gave me the idea.
Because where I'm going with this is my mom for her air quotes retirement taught in Burnett, ISD.
she taught middle school special ed and she would tell me about the either Christmas break or end of year happy hours that teachers and everybody would go on and she said that it was basically just a chance for teachers to get a couple of drinks in them and start talking about how rotten certain kids were really yes like my mom was like god I almost like kind of felt terrible listening to this because it's like you're supposed to like you know I mean I get it some kids are just rotten kids
So, you know, we all knew the troublemakers in school, and I'm sure probably teachers felt that way.
But it just was funny to realize, like, yeah, like teachers actually do, you know, talk about us behind our backs just like we do with them.
Oh, hell yeah.
There has to be.
I mean, they're human.
We all talk about bad about each other.
Apparently the teacher's lounges are like the ultimate spilling of the tea.
Like, that is where it's fourth period, you know, Johnny.
again, I can't stand that kid
and I try to talk to his parents and blah, blah, blah.
Yeah, that's all out there.
So 713, 212, 5, 790.
If you feel inclined, no names, though.
I don't want to get you in trouble with the school.
No, no. If you aren't an educator and you can,
you don't get to call very often.
Like, for instance, my daughter's high school,
I think the cross-country coach listens to the show all the time,
and for that I thank him for that.
Very nice.
So you're off this week.
No, but the thing you used to wig me out was seeing my teachers in public.
You know, like in a grocery store or a restaurant, that would always freak me out.
Yeah, it was, Connor, go ahead and get the bell ready.
They talk about it in the movie Mean Girls, where they saw Tina Fey's character,
and they're like seeing a teacher out in public.
It's almost like seeing a dog on its hind legs.
Ding.
I mean, it's, yeah, it's kind of jarring because, you know.
Let me ask you a question, Dan.
Please.
Because people are, you have all.
this movie knowledge in your head, and you've got sports information in your head, right?
Mm-hmm.
What's not in that head that you have gotten rid of because you have that other stuff in your
head?
Financial advice, financial retention, probably love advice as well.
Because I get that all the time of you're not listening to me.
Because I can tell you this.
I can give you the lineups for like a variety of different sports teams that I loved growing up.
But if my wife says, remember when Cameron was five years old and did this,
and I don't remember she gets super mad at it.
So I've told us all the time.
I said, I have sports facts in my head that have covered up memories of Carly's third birthday.
It's not a great thing to say to your wife because they can, obviously,
they consider that very serious stuff.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, I mean, it's not something I'm proud of.
Trust me, if I could have those other bits of information and not remember as much on this,
and I would absolutely make that trade for sure.
Because I think what I want to do, I think I'm speaking on behalf of all of Houston,
we want to drain your brain of movies.
In quotes, too.
I mean, it's all encompassing, I'm sure.
I just think at 39 years old, Matt, that's going to be a really tough ask.
You're probably right.
I think my programming is pretty much set and just get an update here and there.
Until Elon Musk can come along and be able to try to develop something
that can accomplish that for you.
Until then, I think you're stuck with this version.
Yeah, you just come along,
and you're bringing up all the sports analysis,
and you go, and at the end of the day,
it's like, you know, watching, you know,
a, I can't even name a movie.
I don't watch movies. I don't even know.
It's just, oh, Wall Street.
Remember what happened in Wall Street?
Remember what happened in Wall Street when it's like, like, what?
Yeah, it's one of my go-to moves.
It's one of my crutches.
It makes you, Dan. I wouldn't, I wouldn't change your first.
That's just like if you listen to the Joe Rogan show,
one way or another, he'll either tie it back into fight sports or his time when he hosted Fear Factor.
All right, there you go.
Hey, let's do this.
Let's get to Connor McGovern involved.
He's going to give us the NFL rewind.
Some of the things we didn't catch from this past weekend, and that'll be coming up next here on the program.
If you want to join us, and if you could possibly do it, pull a Dan Matthews and reciting a movie within your sports take, we'll give you a special prop for that because it does take a special art to do that.
713-212-5-790 7-1-3-212-5-790 we got that coming up we have willie fritz is going to join us in one hour from now he has made a coaching change and we'll talk about that with him in just a few minutes give yourself $250 in cash back when you finance a new used or refinance auto loan with the shell federal credit union that's right 250 in cashback plus you can enjoy rates as low as 3.99% APR up to 36 months

Texans on three, one, two, three.
Back to Battle Red Ross and Liberty white-ass Matt Thomas.
What up, what up?
That is what I am.
Real pale Texans talk continues on the Matt Thomas show.
What up, what up?
That remains the rudest introduction of a segment, I think, in Houston Sports Radio.
It's tremendous.
It's terrible.
It's tremendous.
It's embarrassing.
So do I soon enough become Deep Steel Blue Dan?
Well, I mean, are you a Texans homer?
I mean, I want them to do well.
If that makes me a Texans Homer, I guess so, maybe.
Okay, well, then we'll call you Deep Steel Dan.
That's fine.
You know what?
Then I won't disappoint you.
Next year at training camp, when they're in shorts and helmets,
I will tweet out every little positional win for you.
I've got you.
And you'll be blocked.
immediately.
Plus with
videos of me
recapping practice for you.
I got that.
Then you'll start your own YouTube page.
Because Lord knows there's not enough of those.
Locked on Texans.
All right.
713-212-5790.
Time now for
well, Ross is not here to do it.
Ross is in Panama.
And today it'll be up to
Conover Govind for a second straight week
on the NFL rewind. What do you got today?
Week 12 wrapped up last night with the Harbaugh brothers facing off again on Monday night football.
The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 30 to 23.
Justin Herbert and the Chargers got off to an early lead into the second quarter.
However, the Ravens' offense responded, scoring on five straight drives,
reaching the end zone four times, and converting three-fourth downs against a very strong Chargers defense.
Ball at the 40.
Good protection, aired out. Bateman downfield.
And he has got it for the touchdown.
You saw the flag.
That call is against the Chargers and this touchdown will stand.
While Derek Henry didn't reach the end zone, he was still dominant rush for 140 yards on 24 carries.
John Harbaughan proves to a three-no record over his younger brother, Jim.
The last time the brothers coached against each other was Super Bowl 47, 11 years ago.
His team is so much better than the Chargers.
I mean to be rude, but man, Baltimore is good.
Baltimore versus Houston.
Who would be the favorite in that playoff game right the second?
Be honest.
If the game was this weekend.
Baltimore minus four.
In Houston.
Yep.
Early start time.
Would it be on the peacock or on the Amazon or?
Depend.
ESPN the 8, Ocho.
So, I mean, yeah, if they were going to do it as the way that they did it last year,
then probably of AFC, AFC.
NFC, NFC, NFC,
because the other one I think would be
Steelers and Chargers.
And, of course, Pittsburgh and, yeah,
they would be the early start time.
Yeah, I don't know how they're going to go out of this.
They're going to have to hopefully think,
I mean, if Pittsburgh holds on to that division,
Baltimore being the walled card is not premium at all,
not a good spot for the Texans,
because they looked really good last night,
especially the second half.
I think the Texans would be favored over to Steelers,
if indeed that flip does happen.
Yeah, I agree. I agree.
I think you want Pittsburgh way more than you want Baltimore in your facility.
I mean, even the Chargers kind of worry me with the way that Justin Herbert flings it around.
Yeah. All right. What else you got?
The night before was Sunday night football at SoFi Stadium.
So back-to-back primetime games in Los Angeles.
The Philadelphia Eagles took down the Rams 37 to 20.
The main takeaway from this game is that Saquan Barkley might become the first running back since 2012 to win
MVP. Barkley set a career
high 302 yards from scrimmage
and broke the franchise record for
single game rushing yards with 255
yards. Milestone.
A six yards shy of a career
high for rushing yards. And he's got
it and he's got more. What a season.
What a player.
The Eagles are riding a seven
game winning streak and have a shot of being the NFC's
top seed. Matthew Stafford
and the Rams, offensive line struggled, allowing five
sacks and 11 quarterback kicks. Hits.
However, the Rams are just a game out
first place in a tightly contested
NFC West. Yeah, that
NFC West is not spectacular.
Arizona's going to Minnesota this week. They're probably
going to lose that game.
Rams are just pedestrian. You know what?
Niners lost last week at Green Bay.
Maybe boys it takes, maybe you
could have a losing record in the NFC West and still
win the division. Would that be crazy?
Yeah, I mean, 9 and 8. And it's
happened before. I mean, what was it? Seattle?
Saints? Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
when they beat New Orleans.
Seattle that was below and they played the Saints and beat them.
I remember that.
And the NFC South had happened too.
I want to say there was one year because of a tie that I think the Panthers won because they had six wins.
No, they did not win a division with six games.
I think it was the year that Mike Smith got fired because they crushed the Falcons in that final game and then Mike Smith got fired the next day.
I want to say it was 2015.
They won the division with six and ten records.
I don't think there was six and ten
I think they were six nine and one
and one of the division
I will bet you a
lunch that you're wrong
all right there was seven and eight
all right I was gonna say
so a po boy on me congratulations
all right what do we want what did I win
we'll go go get a hot bacon salad dressing
lunch yeah yeah
how about that spinach R choked dip I'm game
let's go all right I'm off of that
yeah by way they don't take
they don't take
cash at that place anymore, by the way. It's all credit.
Well, I mean, I rarely ever carry
cash. The only time I'll carry cash is either going to
Vegas or if I'm traveling. Oh,
there you go. Nice going, Adam Klein. That's good.
Appreciate that.
Why go to a place and have the
hey, oh, you don't take cash?
Okay, here's my car.
Everybody listen to me very carefully.
You must carry $20 in cash for you at all the time, just
in case. Because you don't want to be the
D that, well, I would help you
chip in, but I don't know any cash.
Yeah, I've heard that for many, many people in my life.
Well, because the Lord invented the thing called Venmo for a reason.
All right, well, people don't seem to be dropping the Venmo card.
All right, continue on.
I'm sorry.
Now it's on my soapbox.
After losing to the Texans and Arlington, the Dallas Cowboys,
snapped their five-game losing streak, beating the Washington Commanders 34 to 26 on the road.
The Cowboys have Dak Prescott, DeMarcus,
and Brandon Cooke's all on injured reserved,
and one of their best offensive linemen, Tyler Smith, was ruled out on Sunday.
But the Cowboys overcame two missed field goals and a deflected punt.
to hold off the commanders who nearly pulled off an amazing comeback.
Cavante Turpin scored a 99-yard kick-returned touchdown,
but the commanders scored 10 points in the final 100 seconds,
yet all they needed was a game-time extra point, and they missed it.
Half a minute, no time out.
Daniels throws down the sideline for Terry McLeod.
Lightning strikes twice in Washington for the tie.
Low snap.
It is no good.
Cowboys sealed the victory after returning an onside kick for 4 to 3 yards.
And for a touchdown, the Cowboys aren't really going anywhere in the playoff race,
but they're playing the disruptor as the commanders are on a three-game losing streak.
Are they going to be...
Philadelphia's going to win that division.
Clearly.
They're playing better football.
Can the commanders play themselves out of a playoff spot?
Especially if you get more than one NFC North team in the playoffs.
maybe three.
Oh, easily.
Yeah, they easily can.
They're the seventh right now, as is.
The team that's right behind them is actually a team that's in that no-good division you were talking about, NFC West.
So are you ready to tell me that two teams of NFC West are going to make the playoffs?
Good.
I mean, the Cardinals are six and five.
Niners are going to Buffalo this week.
They have to beat the bills.
Or they're toast.
He had tough for them.
They don't literally have to, but I think they're going to, for their own mental health, they're going to have to.
Yeah, pretty much the teams that they have to worry about the most, them being the commanders, are the Cardinals in Tampa Bay.
Not so much worried about Tampa Bay.
By the way, maybe playing that game after all, because he didn't play last week.
Bad shoulder.
All right.
Anything else?
Yeah, we'll talk about Caleb Williams and the Bears were this close to upsetting the Minnesota Vikings.
But Sam Donner led the Vikings to a 30 to 27 overtime victory.
The Vikings were up 11 points in the final 22 seconds of regulation,
but Caleb Williams led the offense on an A-play drive the results in a touchdown
and a successful two-point conversion.
However, the Vikings let an on-side kick hit Johnny Muntz in the foot,
and the Bears recovered.
Caleb Williams got the Bears in a field-go range and forced overtime.
The Bears won the toss, but the Vikings forced a three-in-out.
Sam Darnel got the ball and set up the Vikings for the game-winning field goal.
29 yards for the win.
Good snap. Good hold. Good kick. The Vikings.
Win it in overtime.
30 to 27.
Sam Darnold is the quarterback story of the season as the Vikings are within a game of the Detroit lines in the NFC North
and have their next three games at home against the Cardinals, Falcons, and Bears again.
And by the way, they're the favorites because I'm here in Minneapolis to land Daniel Jones,
who cleared waivers yesterday by the New York Giants that are being released.
What a find.
Well, I mean, it's not a terrible backup.
I mean, I wouldn't let him be my starter of my football team, but as a backup, he'd be fine.
Yeah, Sam Donald's kind of carved out the new Ryan Fitzpatrick career.
I mean, that's pretty much what he's going to be for his entire career of.
Now you're good enough to be a starter until our other guys ready.
If Sam Darnold, if Sam Darnold leads the Vikings the championship or the NFC champion, well, for that match a Super Bowl,
it's got to be one of the greatest rebound stories in the history of the NFL.
Yeah, I'm not saying that to, you know,
Pooh, pooh, the guy.
But, I mean, I just know that they drafted J.J. McCarthy for a reason.
They're going to want to see what J.J. McCarthy has.
But are you really going to build your team around Sam Darnold?
No, because, like I just told you, that's what he's going to – he's going to be what Joe Flacco is now.
Like, Joe Flacco is good enough to be able to play, and he won't completely wreck the car for you.
But he's also not going to be the reason that you win the game.
Is Sam Darnel playing quarterback for another football team next season?
How about that?
Absolutely.
guaranteed.
Okay.
And that was the NFL Re-Wan.
Thank you very much, Connor, for that.
1244.
Sports Talk, 790.
Matt here in Minneapolis.
Dan, back in Houston, you guys are welcome to be a part of the show.
And ladies as well.
713-212-5-79.
If you want to jump in, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Let's get a couple of comments in from D'Amico from yesterday,
just to kind of see how the room is for our beloved Texans as they get ready for
yet another must-win game this week?
Did I say it was a must-win game last week, boys?
Did I say that?
I don't remember if you did.
This has to be a must-win week,
not literally, but figuratively, yes?
Yeah, it is.
You lose this one year and you're in some pretty serious trouble,
especially with you're going to have to have more team meetings
and you're going to have to really, you'll have had one back-to-back
games to teams that have less than three wins.
Yeah.
By the way, one more thing about putting a bow on last week's game.
There is somebody out on Twitter.
I don't even know who this person is.
You know, when I go to the 4U tab, that's bad things happen for me.
There is somebody that's out there saying, you know, Amy's drunk, crunk, she works hard, she's charitable, she's a great owner, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And then Hannah's Cal's husband or wife.
Mm-hmm.
Now, while that may be true,
I don't think anybody outside of Nashville
thinks that Amy Kunk-strunk is a good owner.
I mean, a lot of people are criticizing her for canning Mike Vrable.
It hadn't worked out for him.
Just saying, this false love for her,
maybe something that she's related to that put that out there,
but I was like, I almost wanted to retweet and say,
I think you're seeing a different side of Amy Kunk that we don't see.
Might be a burner.
Maybe it's so.
Maybe so.
713, 2.12.5.790.
CJ on, not C.J., but Dimeco on how things are in Texanville after a very disappointing loss.
Next year on 790.
This is Craig Ackerman.
The rockets are certainly popping the polypropylase.
I know Matt Thomas all too well.
Hey, by the way, this is my new catchphrase.
Nothing but nylon.
That's right. Craig Ackerman's a bit stealer.
like everybody is it's fine i can live with it
it's the sincerest form of flattery right
of course it is
1251 sports talk 790
matt here in minneapolis
uh dan is back in houston you guys and ladies are welcome to join us throughout the
course to show if you'd like to at 713212 5790
let's uh hear more from what cj had to say
i'll keep doing that why
cj'll speak but won't be till tomorrow let's hear from what
Damico had to say about watching his football team take a very, very painful loss in Tennessee on Sunday.
Yeah, he, of course, saw what we all saw.
The first half, it was at least somewhat better offensively.
In the second half, it sucked.
But Damiko talking about the mistakes all throughout the game, and he says,
hey, don't just focus on the ones in the first half.
In the second half, they're happening in the first as well.
Those things happen in the first half as well.
There are mistakes that happen all throughout the game,
but just the second half for us,
we haven't scored enough points.
We haven't stopped enough people in the second half
from scoring points on us as well.
Defensively, second half,
we have to make sure we play well as well.
We've been outscored by a lot of points in the second half
and got to keep them off the board
and we've got to be able to score in the red zone.
I understand his answer there, Matt,
but it's also too, I mean, as we talked about, up until last week in Dallas,
you went an entire calendar month without scoring an offensive touchdown in the second half.
Like, I kind of feel like sometimes when they're asked questions,
they dodge the answer because they don't have the answer.
I mean, I said it yesterday with Bobby Sloick,
but it's like understand the merit of being asked about the mistakes in the second half.
Like, just say, yeah, we're awful in the second half offensively.
We're terrible, as a matter of fact.
Well, do you think it's, you think it's his, his demeanor is that when someone comes after somebody in life, we all do this, that instead of answering the question head on, you deflected towards another part of, and I wish I had a good analogy for this.
Well, I don't want to give you an analogy because I'm a terrible analogy person, but yeah, point correct directly, what's the problem with the second half?
His answer typically return of, well, we also have problems in the first half, too.
Yeah, I mean, it's, I mean, I'm not going to say it's gaslighting, but I mean, it's, it's kind of like, you know, you're talking bad about someone and maybe they don't have as huge a problem with that person as you do. And usually people's way to kind of diffuse it is, hey, look, they've always been good to me, whatever. But it's also, too, if you want to get confrontational with it, hey, look, you've got issues on your own end as well. Like, that's, that's kind of where I'm going at with the, here I'll call it, it's, it's gaslighting. I mean, it's, it's, you know, just, you know, just, you know, just.
kind of, you know, saying, all right, yeah, we know we've got problems, but you know what,
you've got problems as well, and you don't know what we're trying to call.
Like, he's not doing it in a confrontational way, but it's also where it's, you're not exactly
at least to us taking ownership of what is happening.
Yeah.
Yeah, and I think he's probably just tired of seeing it first and foremost because he's on the
field watching it happen, and he's certainly tired of trying to answer questions about it.
Yeah, I can understand that as well.
What we did see on Sunday in the game against Tennessee was the inability to be able to run the football.
Like it was non-existent.
It wasn't even close to any of the other games we've seen from Joe Mixen or whoever you hand the football off to in the backfield.
He ran the ball for 22 yards in that game.
His lowest total previous was 46 against the Detroit Lions.
So both times at home, it's not been great.
And D'Amico talked about having trouble running the ball.
That what led to the issues in the run game, we didn't block them well enough, and we didn't finish our blocks.
Like, we were on guys and we didn't finish.
It was nothing that they did.
Like, we just got to finish our blocks, especially when we're on the second level.
We have to stay attached.
Like, a lot of times we're getting up to the second level, but we're not staying attached on the linebackers or the safeties.
And they're shooting a gap and making those plays.
That doesn't change in all the football.
Like, you work up to the second level, you have to finish.
or the guy's going to make a move and make the play.
So that's just the mindset for us.
We didn't handle the edge as well,
well enough to get the ball on the perimeter as well.
Well, that tells me is then those guys don't want physicality
because that's the most basic block in football for alignment is run blocking.
I mean, nobody grows up in Pop Warner football that plays on the offensive line throwing the football.
That comes later.
That's in high school.
That's in middle school, maybe.
the most basic is blocking for the run.
And if you don't want to do it,
it just shows me that you don't want to be physical.
But I hear a lot of people say that.
What do you mean by saying he doesn't want to be physical?
Are you saying that the offensive line is finesse driven,
that it doesn't want to push guys around?
I think they want to.
It's hard for me to, as never taken a snap as an offensive line
and saying, man, and look, I'm not a big Laramie Tunsel fan at all.
I think he's been largely overrated as a Houston Texan
and the amount of money that has been spent for the little production he's given
has disappointed me.
But it's hard for me to tell a bunch of 300-pound linemen
who are down in the stands like that
that you're not playing it to as a physical level.
You can be out-worked, but physical meaning they just give up on plays.
And I don't think that's the case, do you?
No, I don't see a lack of effort anywhere on this team.
I just see a team that honestly just makes dumb decisions that lead to untimely penalties.
And that's what I think we've seen not only in the game against Tennessee.
You saw it to some extent against Detroit.
You definitely saw it in even wins this year against Indianapolis, against Buffalo as well.
I mean, I think there's a difference between wanting to be physical and actually knowing that you can be.
Like, I've learned all throughout my life around football that it's either you either want to be that player or it's just not in you.
And maybe it's just not in these guys to be that way.
Yeah.
So if you were to give the advice, we get to the top of the hour here, what would you tell the linemen?
If we're talking about not finishing through their progressions, are they giving up on the place too soon?
Are they assuming that Joe Mixing can do all the heavy lifting by himself?
I think they're a line that's more suited to being much better for the passing game.
And, I mean, it worked out incredibly well last year when you weren't really that good running the football.
And this year, I mean, you heard D'Amico say it.
You heard Bobby Sloak say it, that they wanted to run the football.
You just don't have the guys that are able to do that.
I mean, remember, you know, back in the air raid days when it was very in vogue,
I mean, now it's kind of, you know, taken on a different form in college football.
But, I mean, you had players coming out of programs that were built for that type of offense.
And the case and point I can bring up here is when Mack Brown wanted to go to more of a pro-style offense.
And people were saying, well, coach, you can't do that because you don't have the guys up front
that are going to have to take on that physicality that type of offense requires.
All right.
Those are the offensive line thoughts.
And the great O-Line guru, his name is Dan Matthews.
I'll buy into it.
It makes a lot of sense to me.
Final hour includes Willie Fritz in 30 minutes.
Believe it or not today, all things about Mac Brown, who's out today as head football coach at North Carolina.
He will coach their final game this week against North Carolina State.
1259 on Sports Talk 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
Final hour on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
is off today. He is on vacation. He's in Antarctica. I hope he's dressed warm for the occasion.
Dan Matthews in this hour. 713-212-5-7-90. Gordor view with me tomorrow's. We have a plethora of guests and fun things to do to wrap up the week.
We are off Thursday and Friday, but we will be up in Pro Bowl, Utah, for the Cougars game this Saturday against BYU.
I'm going to Philadelphia first tomorrow and then back to Houston for Thanksgiving, then heading up to
Utah on Friday.
Headlines the day.
Rockets take on the Minnesota Timberwolves
tonight.
Dan, we mentioned us a little while ago.
If you're not a huge basketball fan,
just want to see a bizarre court, check out the Target Center
tonight, correct?
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting one for your eyes up there.
Of course, you'll be on the call.
We'll be back here in studio,
as I'll have launch pad and wrap,
but it is a very bright lime green,
which, by the way, too,
will that not mess with the cameras?
Because don't cameras have a tough time with green?
That's why they have green screens.
I don't know. That's a great question.
We'll find out later tonight.
You got to text me and tell me how bad it looks on this.
I mean, I would assume that all these courts have been tested out to make sure it look decent.
I would think so.
I mean, yeah, maybe you do a little bit of extra white balance.
I mean, I don't know.
I don't know the intricacies of cameras.
No, nor do I.
All right.
We got Mack Brown is out at North Carolina.
He'll coach one more game.
He's the subject of believe it or not today.
We have the Baltimore Ravens disposing of the charges last night.
Texans are off today, back on the practice field tomorrow, getting ready for Sunday's game at Jacksonville.
Aggies and Longhorns start to work this week towards the game on Saturday.
Game day, I'm assuming, is there, correct?
Yeah, it's in College Station.
Well, I would hope so.
The game's in College Station.
I wouldn't expect them to be in Austin.
Well, I mean, sometimes they do have game day elsewhere.
Like, I mean, last week, for example.
And by the way, too, Kirk Herbstreet on with Sean Salisbury this morning.
Good conversation there.
It's up on SportsTalk 790.com, free iHeartRadio app.
But like last week, he was in Columbus for the Ohio State Indiana game.
And then he flew down to Norman for the Oklahoma Alabama game.
Yeah, by a huge upset.
Nobody thought that was going to happen.
It was massive.
I mean, Alabama, feeling a lot better, kind of taking a deep breath of,
okay, hey, maybe Caleb Dabore's not that.
bad. We can make the playoff. And then, pow, you were terrible.
Jalen Millroll is not very good, is he? Honestly. Just okay.
Yes, yes. I would say that probably that game against LSU inflated people's opinion of him.
But overall, yes, probably just okay.
Yeah. So let me ask you this, because you follow the college game a lot tighter than I do.
tell me give me some scenarios that would rock the college football world this weekend i would think
first and foremost a&m beating texas would would be crazy for the SEC correct yeah i mean that
if michigan was able to pull off the upset over ohio states i think that would probably do that
um i'm trying to think uh who else could you know kind of throw chaos into the scenario um
Oregon plays against Washington.
Don't see that.
Keep an eye out for Georgia Tech at Georgia.
That could be an interesting one.
How about in the Big 12?
Houston beating BYU would knock BYU
obviously out of the Big 12 race.
Yeah, you would have that.
You would have Arizona State at Arizona.
I mean, I think short of Arizona State being able to win the Big 12,
that wouldn't do too much.
Yeah, I mean, that's about it.
I mean, Miami at Syracuse, no, Maryland, Penn State, no.
There's a four-way tie right now in the Big 12
with four teams and two losses.
Notre Dame could be an interesting one at USC.
You know, speaking in Notre Dame,
and we've been talking about this college football playoff for a while.
You know in the U.S. that Notre Dame,
even if they go undefeated, would never be able to have a buy?
Because they're not affiliated with one of the conferences.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, maybe that was kind of the,
enticement right there of, oh, you guys want to continue to do this with NBC and
independence and all of that and somewhat be in the ACC but not really being the ACC.
All right, we'll show you.
Yeah, because I, and I don't know if Notre Dame will ever get to that spot, but I mean,
clearly Notre Dame has been a program in the last, I don't know, 50 years.
It has always on the cusp of winning a potential national championship.
I'll look this up during the break, but I actually, I'm going to push back on that.
I want to say that Notre Dame, if they were in position, I think they would count
them as the ACC. I want to say that
I heard that. I could be wrong.
Gordy told me to the other wife.
Well, then I would trust Gordy on that
because he's following. No, no, no. I'm not saying
that like, you know, like, I'm being
defensive about this, but like Gordy's
following it a lot closer than I did
when I was in my previous stop.
Because here's the thing. You have
the top four spots are
supposed to be for conference champions.
Mm-hmm. That is the four
highest ranked conference
champions. Well,
Notre Dame is not in a conference.
So how could
how could they jump over a team?
I guess they have no affiliation
in football. I mean, they have affiliation with everything
else in the ECC, but they have no affiliation
except they have to play four opponents in the ECC.
That's all they have to do.
And by the way, I stand
corrected in terms of
you and Gordy being correct. Yahoo Sports.
Independence like Notre Dame are not eligible to receive a top
four seat or buy.
Now, they could be a five-seat and have a home field in one in a new game.
Right.
Right.
Right.
Right.
Which, by the way, how long is that far going to last for?
Do you think they're going to go 16 teams?
Well, it's not that they're going to go 16 teams.
Eventually, it's going to be, hey, Las Vegas wants to host one of these opening round games.
Hey, Tampa.
Dude, yes.
Like, and then people, of course, will lament, oh, well, you're taking away the sanctity of the game.
Who cares?
You're still going to watch.
No, I don't think it's a question of, I don't think.
I think it's a question of how much money is there to spend.
And my argument is, if you're a diehard fan of these teams, you're going.
You're just to.
Well, it's also, I mean, like, you know, I was talking about this with somebody the other day.
Like the people, oh, these playoff games should be played on Saturday.
It's a Saturday game.
Who cares if it's a Monday night?
You're watching the game.
Stop.
Who would argue with you about the day of the week?
Apparently, J.D. Pichel of On 3 is a huge proponent.
a guy that does an online show for On 3.
I don't know who that is.
Why would you care?
If it was Wednesday at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, millions of people would watch.
Well, it's the same people who lament about who are going to do the same thing.
Oh, well, those opening games should be played on a college campus.
Well, you know what?
It's going to be just fine being played at Allegiance Stadium.
No, my guess is you're probably right.
They will probably, someone will step in and make all these neutral site games
so they can attract thousands of people.
Yes, it's going to become a paired down version of the NCAA tournament
or the NCAA tournament puts it up for bid,
and Boise will try to get a host.
Houston will try to get a host,
either at Toyota Center or if you want to do the riser-raised stage court there
on a football field for a Sweet 16 and Elite 8, go ahead.
Yeah, do that.
They've done it tons of times.
Yeah, yeah.
The home field first round is intriguing to me,
but I don't know if it's going to last long term.
Here's another reason why it's going to be such a novelty is watch one of these games at Ohio State, Penn State,
if they ever play like at Michigan or any of these other places,
and they have like a deluge blizzard come through and you might not be able to play the game that night.
That's when they'll be like, what are we doing?
Like, why aren't we playing these games in Tampa?
when Nashville builds their brand new indoor stadium.
Why aren't we playing this game in Nashville?
Yep.
That's when that's going to happen.
They're not going to want schedule quirks.
They're not going to want to say,
hey, Florida State has to go to play at,
oh, I don't know, Boston College in a playoff game,
and it's snowing in 15 degrees.
The NFL doesn't mind the elements.
I think college football would probably have a bigger problem with it.
Because the NFL doesn't.
have to mind it. They know that you're going to watch no matter where it's at and how it's being
played regardless. So college. The NFL actually frankly encourages the bad weather because
they put the, they put the Green Bay games, they put the New England games, they put the games in
cold weather cities at the nighttime where it's going to be colder and a chance of precipitation
and other sort of, you know, wind and rain in that kind of thing. I mean, because that's the thing
with college is, I mean, college is very much a niche viewership. It's huge here in this part
of the country. Well, it's really huge in the southeast. Parts of the Midwest, the West Coast,
they could care less.
Up in the Northeast,
they could care even less than less.
Yep.
All right, 713, 212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Willie Fritz is going to join us at the bottom of the hour.
You may join us if you'd like to at 7-13-212-5-7-90.
Let me ask you this, and we'll do more of this tomorrow.
Are there any Aggies and Longhorns listening to me right now
that are trying to get tickets?
that they're just running into, this is insanely expensive,
and I just can't do it.
Or are you saying this has not happened in over a decade,
I've got to be there for it?
Because the prices I'm seeing for these tickets,
and we'll talk about this coming back, are incredible.
The hotel cost, just getting in and around Kyle Field might be one of the biggest,
I mean, if you thought George Strait concert was an ordeal getting in and around,
how I'll field. Imagine what that's going to be like this Saturday.
So if you're one of the fan bases
of one of those two teams,
how is your search going for tickets?
Do you already have them? Are you willing
to sell them? I'm not trying to be a ticket broker here, but I'm just curious
where you are on this or are you got to be in that stadium
no matter what the case may be.
And no, me and Matt cannot get you tickets.
No, I have no connections. No, none.
I mean, my family's going and that's a non-starter.
Don't you always love those DMs?
Hey, I know we hadn't talked to.
a while and we'll continue
that way.
So you won't
you will not respond to people
DMing you? Dude, it's the most annoying.
I mean, even people, hey, I see
you're on the field. Could you ever get my son on?
No, I cannot get your son on the field. They don't even want
me on the field. Yeah, they don't want you
there, Dan. They've met you. They don't want you there.
713-212-5-7901.
They know where they want you, Dan. They want you
at Two Creeks Crossing Resort. That's what they want you.
Get a little getaway
to enjoy Lake
Livingston. There are waterfront cabins.
There are tree houses.

There are these beautiful cabins that you can put multiple families in.

Or you know what?
You can do a bros weekend and run a cabin out, play some cards, go fishing,
just relax, hang out with the guys.
Whatever you want to do, these facilities are absolutely amazing.
And I promise you, get up to that area near Lake Livingston
at Two Creeks Crossing Resort, and you'll be like, man, this is certainly worth the drive.

So have you looked at the stub hubs,
that kind of stuff, to see what tickets are going for these bad boys?
Apparently it's the highest regular season ticket dollar
that you're going to want to buy for a college football game,
maybe ever in the history of college football,
at least for regular issues in game.
Yeah, a website, and I will say this as clearly as I can,
so I avoid any confusion.
Tick, pick is the name of it.
The name of it is Tick, like as in Tickets, and Pick, like you pick something up.
Oh, okay.
I thought you said something else.
No, no, I properly enunciated and made sure that there was no blurred lines there.
The current get-in is average, of course, $741.
the average purchase price is just over 1,000.
1,079.
And this was as of yesterday.
I mean, I don't know how much extra, I mean, the most extravagant spending I've ever done for sports.
Now, I did go to the final four to see the Cougars play Baylor.
And I did that in a moment's notice.
But I use like every frequent flyer mile I had and then I bought a one-way ticket on the way back.
That was about $600.
Now, you don't have to do that if you're going to the game
because I'm presuming that 90% of the people that are coming to this game
are within driving distance of college station.
Sure.
But, man, are these kids, are these season ticket holders selling them?
Are the, I mean, I wonder who is that, what's the demographic?
Who is that person that says Texas and A&M are finally playing each other?
It's been so long.
We've missed his rivalry.
And let's go try to sell these tickets.
Not a ton, at least a really good buddy of mine
is an Aggie season ticket holder. He went to A&M
and he, no matter us on our group text,
trying to tell him like, dude, you could pay for your season tickets.
You could go on vacation with this money.
Like, watch it on TV.
He was like, no, absolutely not.
He's like, I have to be here.
And by the way, too, the same website that, I mean, I've given a name out.
We don't have to revisit it.
Don't say it against it.
I'm afraid you're going to slow an episode of the time.
No, no, no.
I'm highly concentrated on it.
This is the highest average price in years for a game.
The second highest was $912 for Bucks at the Patriots in 2021.
And of course, that was the return of Tom Brady.
Ohio State at Michigan last year was 763,
762 for Georgia at Texas this year.
And Ohio State at Notre Dame last year in South Bend was 758.
Yeah, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't.
honestly see this going down at all.
I think, frankly, when you get closer to kickoff,
they're probably going to get more expensive, wouldn't you think?
The key is...
Sometimes if you wait at the very last second,
they say you can get a deal,
but once you get, if you were to get within a mile of Kyle Field
and people are tailgating and having a good time
and there's blank talking between the two schools,
it's going to want you to be in that facility
even more than you would be if you were just on the outside looking in, right?
See, and that's the thing, is advantage ticket holder,
at that point because maybe you do go there and you say, you know, look, I'm perfectly fine if I don't
get my price going to the game. But if I do, I mean, bar tab for everybody. We'll go to Northgate.
We'll watch this game and wait. Of course, hopefully if we win, we being A&M, then you could be
able to have even more of a fun time on Northgate with other Aggies, trash talking Texas
fans that walk by and you getting sloshed on free money, basically.
Yeah, again, everybody's going to have different agendas on it,
whether you bought the tickets to go to the game because you wanted to be there for it,
or you say, you know what, we're now in the same conference,
we're going to see each other again in a couple of years,
the game is going to be in Austin next year.
It may not, yeah, it's hard to pinpoint how exactly the importance
for every single individual fan is.
I can just tell you this.
My son, my middle one, is a senior.
And this will be his only opportunity to see these two teams,
play as a student. Now he can obviously go back as an alum, but I think there's something special
about being in the student section. So there's no way, no how no chance he's selling his ticket.
Well, and that's the thing too is, I mean, of course what I'm saying in certain fronts is a statement
of privilege because of what we do and like the ways that we can get tickets now. Like, honestly,
a lot of times I won't go to a game unless it's a premium seat because I'm like, why do I want
the traffic? What do I want just everything that goes with?
it just to sit in just a regular seat, I can just watch it at home and be perfectly fine with it.
I mean, I used to be about, oh, I've got to be there, the atmosphere, all those different things.
But like, especially college football games, where especially in the SEC, just how hard it is to get in
and out of these towns, it's an all-day deal.
Like, if you're going to this game on Saturday, you would be best suited to leave your house
in the morning and expect that you're going to be getting home well after midnight.
Yeah, well, I'm out. Yeah, we're there's been the night of the apartment. So, yeah, there's no chance anybody from my family is coming home on Sunday morning because it's going to take hours to get out of Cal, feel much less trying to get home to Houston a decent hour.
That was the beauty for me and Gordy once LSU started to get blown out that we were like, let's just go. And the most traffic we had on the way home was stopping at the place that's got the beaver on it.
Yeah, I'm glad you to mention because they don't spend money. They don't need to, but they, you know.
I was going to say, if they want to, they're more than welcome.
I will pump the hell out of some beef jerky and some brisket sandwiches and clean restrooms.
All of that, absolutely.
Yeah, but until then, no, they get nothing unlike it.
All right, 128.
Let's talk to head football coach Willie Fritz, and he'll join us next year.
There has been a coaching change, and we'll hear from him on that when we return.

Damn!
Time is 133. It is the Matt Thomas show here
from Minneapolis.
Rockets and the wolves coming up later
tonight tomorrow in Philadelphia, and this
weekend I'll be joining the Cougars in
of Provo, Utah for U of H versus BYU.
It'll be the final game of the 2020
season for Coach Willie Fritz,
and he has brought to you today, as he is every week
by the joint chiropractor, the official chiropractor
of the Houston Cougars.
Coach, needless to say, probably a tough day for you
with the decision to make a move
with your offensive coordinator's spot,
take us through what it's been like the last couple days
and the decision ultimately to make a change
for this week's game.
Well, Kevin's a barbede.
He's a fantastic person.
And we just, you know, just didn't have the success we wanted to have this year offensively.
And, you know, I tried to wait as long as I can.
I was just hoping that we could, you know, have some success and just was tough.
And, you know, it's coaching, it's playing, it's everything, execution.
And, you know, but I wanted to get out in front of this a little bit earlier.
There's a cycle involved with hiring.
coaches it's kind of right now so I just needed to do it now and I talked to the team
earlier this morning and then released a little statement and and you know Sean Bell is
going to be our interim offensive coordinator and you know had a good lively practice this
morning and you know we want to go up and play great in a provost Saturday night so
but unfortunately it's part of the job that you got to got to do from time.
times of time.
It is a tough from a timing standpoint because obviously you want to find the next list of
candidates.
You almost feel like listening to what you're telling us is that you kind of had to do it now
just so you can get out in front of it.
Is that fair to say?
Yeah, a little bit.
You know, it's, you know, we just hadn't had much success here, particularly recently,
offensively.
And, you know, and you wanted to, you know, I had all sorts of, I came back.
from practice and had about 30 text messages.
You know, so, you know, now that people know it's open, you see who's out there and who's
available.
You know, I told our kids, hey, we're going to have a nationwide search.
We're going to find the very best person.
They help put us in position to be big 12 champions.
And that's what I got to do is head coach, and I've got to find the right guy.
And the more time you have, obviously, the easier that is for you.
obviously coach when you look down the road for the future and that's what we're looking forward
to obviously seeing what you do and who you make on the hire it has to be about the coach that
fits the players and vice versa so if i gave you a dream scenario obviously you want a team that
scores a lot and gets in the end zone a bunch and is exciting but what kind of things characteristics
do you want from a guy that's going to ultimately be your play caller well number one you want a good
person you know that's very important to me guy's going to be a good guy's going to be a
good role model mentor to our student athletes.
I want a guy that can play complimentary football.
You know, sometimes get off as these coordinators.
You just try to score as many points they can.
Don't worry about field position or turnovers or, you know,
time of possession and ends up hurting your defense and your kicking game
and then play field position or score the game,
all those different kind of things.
So, and I do believe we want to be a 50-50 team.
You know, I want to be able to.
you know, run the ball for 70-play game, you know, 35 times run and 35 times pass.
And, you know, we weren't able to get to that point.
And then we've got to go out and do a great job recruit.
That's another part of it with getting the guy in here is, you know, helping, you know,
to see what he, you know, needs and looks for and, you know, different position groups.
We've got some good guys coming back offensively,
but we've got some positions that we need some help
and be able to play with the same kind of guys
everybody else is playing with in the Big 12.
So it's going to be important for us to get a guy in here
and not help us with the freshman class.
We've already got that figured out
and help us with the guys in any additions
that we might make from the portal.
Let's start thinking about this BYU team.
They're frankly shell-shocked the way they performed themselves the last couple of weeks.
They still have a chance at this Big 12 championship.
I think a lot of things have to obviously line up.
But take me through what you've seen so far for them this year.
And I'm not saying anything's vulnerable because obviously they're in a bad mood,
but they've been a double football team in the last two weeks.
Well, they've had a great year other than the last couple of weeks.
I haven't had the outcome they wanted almost did last week.
but you know it's a team that was projected pretty low in the big 12 prior to the season
and has done a great job i think won their first nine ball games you know offensively what
you think you know big offensive line you know they're they're going to be the most mature
team we play i think they average uh 23 24 years of age someplace in that vicinity excellent
a quarterback, you know, big tall receivers, big strong running game defensively, you know,
play a lot of man coverage, which is, you know, I don't know if they've always done that or not,
but they're playing a bunch of man coverage this year and just really well-coached club.
I got a lot of respect for their head coach.
He does it the right way.
And they play extremely hard, so we're going to have to come in there in a hostile environment
and playing in the evening and, you know, playing on national TV,
and we're going to have to play great.
We know that.
I've said that every week.
You know, in order for us to have the success we want to have,
we've got to play well in all three phases,
and we're certainly going to have to do that Saturday night.
All right.
We have had our share of games that are temperatures in the mid-90s.
This week's game could be a temperature is in the 20s, 25, 30-degree range.
Your equipment staff probably going to have to put some extra time in this week,
loading up the plane?
Yeah, they're going to have to do that.
It's, you know, I think it'll be fun.
They'll kind of challenge everybody.
I've played a bunch of cold games,
but may not have as many guys that have done that before.
So we'll, you know, get out there.
Once you get out there playing and coaching,
you know, you really don't notice it much.
So that'll be a great challenge for us.
We're looking forward to it.
Last question for you.
Coach. Let's do this season recap here, and obviously still one game left to go.
Give me the high watermark of the year and then take us through what your next few weeks will be
beyond the fact of recruiting and obviously trying to fill a coaching position.
What other forms of evaluation will you be doing once the dust settles of this season is over?
Well, you know, you hit on the two main ones.
You know, hiring an offense coordinator and then also, you know, I'm sure there'll be some guys
we'll add to our roster via the portal.
We've got National Signing Day a week from tomorrow, I think, December 4th.
For high school guys, we're going to sign a great high school class.
We're really excited about that.
And, you know, that'll be a – and then we'll have a recap.
You know, we'll visit with all our players and, you know, talk to them about things they did well,
things they need to prove on.
I'll visit with all the coaches also and give my observations and sum up this season.
So there's a lot of stuff to do.
And then take a little bit of time off at the end of December and jump back into when the kids return in January.
And I'm assuming getting ready to move in that football facility in the not-too-distant future too, correct?
Yeah, July.
We should be getting in there.
I took a walkthrough on it a couple of weeks ago, and it is going to be spectacular.
but we'll have facilities on par with anybody in the state of Texas.
So that's another added bonus to being here at the University of Houston.
Coach, we appreciate our weekly visits.
I know the better times are ahead.
Thanks again for your honest assessment of what's going on,
and we look forward to surprises and folks in Provo this weekend,
and we will see you, and happy Thanksgiving to you and the family.
Same to you all.
Go Coos.
Thank you very much.
Willie Fritz joining us here on Sports Talk 790.
and again, a decision made by coach to relieve offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay of his duties.
Sean Bell will be the, who's a quarterback's coach, and passing game coordinator will be calling plays this week.
142 is our time.
Time for us to play, believe it or not.
It's all things about Mack Brown.
Speaking of coaching changes, he is going to coach one more game at North Carolina.
And how old do you know, Mac Brown?
Chance to win some nice prizes coming up on that straight ahead.
143.
Sports Talk 790.
Matt Thomas Show continues here from Minneapolis in a moment here on 790.
Hey, it's Jeff Blum.
Blum fact number 14.
I was on the White Sox in 2005.
Yeah, sorry about that sweep, H-Town.
We're all good right now, right?
World Series champion.
Back to your lunchtime champion, Matt Thomas.
147.
Matt Thomas show here from Minneapolis.
Dan is back with us for the final segment.
Rockets and Wolves, do you have the launch pad at 6 o'clock today?
That's correct.
Launchpad, 6 o'clock, rockets wrap afterwards.
And even though I made the gut feeling,
I would hope that it's a rocket's win to be able to talk about on rockets wrap.
It'd be nice.
It'd be nice.
If they lose, not the end of the world, although I kind of, you know what,
I'm, you know what, me, I'm always a carp and four horse guy.
I like this top three seating the Rockets have in the Western Conference.
forget about the end play.
I mean, this is thinking about the playoffs after all these years of all these losses,
I'm all for it.
Well, it's also, too.
I mean, it's kind of a character test for you.
I mean, can you beat these teams if you do face them in the playoffs?
And, I mean, we found out earlier in the year when they played against Oklahoma,
or Oklahoma City, you're not as good as them right now.
Maybe you will be as good as them when you play them in December, March, or even April.
Yeah.
I really hope they can pull this off.
It would be fun for them a nice little reward.
And again, I know that I think generally speaking, most sports fans don't really care
that a whole much about the in-season tournament.
But it's adding a little bit of an extra layer.
I wouldn't say it's necessarily going to dominate this part of the sports year.
We've got so lots of football going on, both college and pro.
But if you're a basketball fan, it definitely gives you a little more of an interest
than maybe it would have, if it was just a regular mundane,
who's the basketball game, to be honest with you.
Well, and too, I mean, Stephen Adams is out tonight,
so we're not going to see him and Rudy Gobert get into it.
But maybe Dylan and Rudy Gobert get into it at some point tonight,
maybe a tie-up for a loose ball or something like that.
Dylan doesn't care who he goes up against.
He'll fight anybody.
That's true.
He does not duck smoke.
No, by the way, did you say that Joel Embed's not playing tomorrow?
I did not.
Paul George is not playing tomorrow.
Hmm.
And there's somebody else for the Sixers, I think it's not playing tomorrow, too.
Kyle Lowry.
Kyle Lowry is out tomorrow.
Sorry, Darrell.
Yeah, they have been a major, major disappointment.
I mean, shell-shocked how bad they've been this year.
It's just seemingly, it's like they've just continuously tried.
And look, I know that I say that.
It sounds like I'm taking a shot at Darry.
I'm not.
We love Darry around.
here. But, I mean, it's not for a lack of trying, that's for sure.
Yeah, they're 3 and 13. They have the second worst record in the Eastern Conference.
So you start flipping players?
Too soon. They're only three out of the 10th spot.
But, man, they are 10 games under 500. And there's only 16 games so far in this season.
I mean, that is saying something.
I mean, we've seen that if he doesn't believe they have a chance to go for a championship, he'll do it.
I mean, I remember that press conference when they tried.
traded away Shane Badiere and I can't remember who else and he said, look, we're not a championship
basketball team. Just what is. What are you going to trade? I mean, you know, I mean, what do you
have the trade that you'd be willing to give up? You're talking about for the Rockets willing to
give up? Philadelphia. Oh, I mean, I would think that somebody would be fine taking Joel
Embed. That much money and that much injury? I mean, I get that parameters of it, but it's
also too. I mean, I think that
the NBA does not
have enough stars. It's a star-deficient
league. And if there is a team out
there that has enough of the
assets to be able to give up, and
a guy that could help give them a boost at the
box office, for sure.
Yeah, I don't see him being
traded. I think it's too much money.
I think Kelly Ubrae would be a guy that could possibly
trade, maybe Tyrese Maxie, but
I don't know.
Good players, but that's not necessarily
doing anything for me in terms of, hey, come
watch us play.
