Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
12-01 in H-Town.
What's happening in lunchtimmers?
Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Thursday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
This is Sports Talk 790.
He had been struck out and a change-up his first time.
The heating up judge who settles under this ball.
But that drops him.
Can Hernandez get to the bag before the throw?
He does.
On a routine play, Aaron Judge.
Flubs it in center field and the Dodgers catch a huge break right there.
Well, the Dodgers got to be saying okay.
Here's our chance.
There's going to be a tough play, but one the Yankees should make and the bases are loaded.
Two defensive mishaps for New York.
It's the second Yankee error of the inning and they'll be loaded for Gavin Lutz.
I cannot think you're one more out of way.
You just have to block it out and make pitches with two.
Ground by right side, Lizzo.
Nobody at atrocious defense from the Yankees leading directly to a Dodger run in the fifth.
The Yankee defense absolutely failed Garrett Cole on the fifth.
It's now five to one and they're loaded for Freddie.
Joe Otney yet to really make his mark in this World Series.
Folks it foul.
That's catcher's interference on Austin Wells.
They're pointing to Wells.
Interference will load the bases, and the list of airs grows for the Yankees.
The Dodgers are strike away.
From a championship, from a proper celebration.
Then they started riots.
Good afternoon, everybody.
Ross, I do love L.A.
I don't love L.A. sports teams.
I do love L.A., but...
When you really love something, Matt, you burn its bus.
is to the ground. Yeah, and you
raid Nike stores
and just go in there and try to steal
as much gear as possible.
Yes.
Oh, man.
I felt dirty
just the whole week. I got to be
really honest with you. I mean,
giving you any run
towards the Dodge which just makes you
gross. It was the lesser
of the two evils, though. We
chose that we're on the right side of history.
Oh, I
I don't think there was any doubt in our mind we had to root for the Dodgers.
Yeah.
It was mostly rooting against the Yankees, of course.
And Brian Cashman.
That's right.
How are you going to blame this one on the Astros?
By the way, I am getting inundated with tweets, Rossi.
We've got to call Garrett Cole in a few minutes.
Really?
They're asking for him.
Okay.
When's he going to call in, do you think?
Are your people out to his people?
Um, let's try next time.
Let's just, let's just, uh, Conner, why we just random dialing.
Yeah, we won't even, like, set him up.
We'll just, like, just call him if he's available.
We'll try.
A lot of folks did not think he was very polite to me yesterday when he called the show.
Thus, he deserved the lack of defense that, uh, by the way, does Anthony Rizzle give
two craps about being in the World Series?
Well, why do you say that?
Well, yeah.
And I know he's got some hand injuries or whatever, but he has,
no home runs since like May or whatever it was.
I mean, I was like, man, do you even care about playing baseball right now?
I mean, he was washed before they signed him this year.
That's true. That's true.
I will say this, and we were kind of, you and I were kind of talking about whether or not
America was going to catch on to this Yankees Dodgers series.
I'm going to probably guess and Ross and tell you the numbers for these games are going to be outstanding
because there are just two rabid fan bases, but collectively a lot of America just,
hates them both too. So you add that together and it means people are going to at least watch.
Yeah. I wonder, have you had noticed at all or paid attention to what the rate of the World Series
ratings have been? I mean, the fact that it was basically, they got up 3-0 probably didn't help.
Now, I will say this. I think I saw a report that it beat the Monday night game beat the Pittsburgh
Steelers Giants game. Really? I don't know that to be accurate. I thought I saw some
And then again, remember, Twitter, you have to kind of double check.
And also, you know, people talk to the game like this, this demo and that demo.
And like, it's, oh, okay, yeah, they won 18 to 19 females.
Like, what?
Okay.
Sure.
Yeah.
All right.
So I need a ruling from you, Rossi, on something.
It doesn't involve me, but it involves a member of my Rockets broadcast team, a traveling crew.
Okay.
Adrian Chavaria has been a long time Spanish voice of the Rockets.
Oh, yeah.
Huge Dodgers fan.
huge Dodgers. I mean, huge Dodgers fan.
I told him last week. This is the only time I'll ever say this. Go Dodgers.
Okay. So he flew with the team on the team playing, and I flew up by myself commercially.
And he took care of my per diem money. And I said, hey, can I come get my per diem money?
Because I know that you're watching the game. This is when the game was five to nothing.
He says, bro, I've taken a sleeping pill. I'm going to.
bet oh wow so i said that's fine i mean i get the money the next day but i didn't really believe
him so then i'm on a group thread of text with some other people in the traveling party one
our director of operations is a huge yankee's fan so we were blank talking each other it was me
craig is it in hos or equipment manager or operations person and adrian and adrian doesn't know
any of this is going on the comeback because he was asleep
So he wasn't lying.
He was like, you know what?
5-0, I'm out of here.
I want to really give him lots of crap all day long.
I think I should be able to do that, right?
The win probability got up to 95.8%.
What a joke.
The Astros have lost World Series games before.
Did we ever fall asleep?
Did we ever go, it's over, good night?
No, I think I watched every single out of probably every single game,
no matter what, even to just having it on the background.
But you know what?
You're up three.
You got three wins in the bag.
It's not like it was game seven, I guess.
I don't know.
I'm trying to give him some leeway here somehow,
but it seemed like poor form, Matt.
I don't think he deserves leeway.
Yeah.
I could see that.
I mean, you missed one of the great comebacks in World Series history.
Yeah.
You missed it because you gave up.
Yeah.
Did he have a morning appointment?
What did he have to do?
in the morning. Nothing.
Oh, okay.
He doesn't leave his room.
We go out to dinner occasionally.
Not we. I mean, like everybody in the group, like the whole traveling party, we go out
to dinner, we maybe go see a movie.
Yeah.
Yeah, we got to throw a flag.
You know what?
You're right.
We got to throw a flag on this.
So I'm just, I was stunned.
He says, I'm going to bed, bro.
I'm like, going to bed.
It's the freaking world series.
I mean, it's the world freaking series.
I mean, it's the world freaking series.
raise your team's in it. I just couldn't believe it.
Yeah. All right.
Go Dodgers. Oh, we don't have to say it anymore. You don't have to say it anymore. Please don't.
We're done. We're absolutely finished with them. Thank God.
All right. Well, Rossi, we have a super busy show today. I mean, this is a show that might get us on Marconi.
Okay. Explain. All right, we've got Anthony Beck's going to join us today on the show.
Okay. And you're like, who's Anthony Bell? I am. Former tight end of the Jets way back in the day.
He's the coach of the St. Louis battlehawks of the XFL, but he's also the Jets radio analyst.
Okay, great.
Well, he's busy.
It's funny because Conner's like, why are we having the battlehawks coach on?
I'm like, because he does the color for the Jets.
First of all, why not?
It was like, duh.
Who doesn't want to talk XFL in the middle of the NFL season?
Come on now, Connor.
He'd be better than that.
That's cool.
So we'll have him join us coming up at the bottom of the hour to give us a little Jets, Texans preview.
At 1.30, we got Dr. Ordo with us for his weekly 30 minutes.
The last is 30 minutes of major market radio.
Yes.
At 2 o'clock, we're going to check in with Eddie Nunez, the athletic director of the University of Houston.
You know, kind of see what life is like on the job after moving from New Mexico, previously at LSU.
And just the thought of trying to navigate these murky waters that is NIL and transfer portal and Big 12.
And I just got the announcement.
I got the press release, Matt.
He will also be formally announcing your huge NIL donation.
So that's exciting news.
Got a bad connection.
here in Dallas. I didn't hear a word you said there.
Thank you for that. Whatever you said was probably rude.
And then we had the rotten five a day at 2.30.
Looking forward to that.
Yeah.
And, believe it or not today.
So, I mean, this is a radio program.
Is it Helly Aaron not Dodgers?
Believe it or not, Dodge.
Ooh.
You feel like a dirty whore, don't you?
Oh, it doesn't feel good.
No.
All right. So 713, 212.
570.
Now the World Series is over with
have you cleansed yourself now again what i want some people to do is i want the people to call in
today and say man i told you i wasn't going to watch it but you did you had to have watched it was
there was serious drama for a lot of this series i think a lot of people were tuned out in houston
we're like that no matter if it was yeah you know forget what i said yeah if it was like
giants and guardians we wouldn't be watching it didn't matter if not houston that's how we roll in this town
That's okay.
In this community, we only roll for the Houston teams.
And then sometimes we don't even roll for the Houston teams.
I mean, it is what it is.
We're getting there.
We're getting there.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-790.
Did you feel a little dirty rooting for the Dodgers,
or did you feel better by just seeing the Yankees absolutely implode?
By the way, Rossi, did I have the series prediction right?
Yes, Matthew.
You called out the Dodgers and 5.
I called you a madman.
I said that was ridiculous and a long laundry list of your bad opinions.
And you nailed it on the head.
Now, it took a great meltdown from Aaron, Judge, and Garrett Cole and Company.
But at the end of the day, you were right, and I was wrong.
And you're going to be nice to be the entire rest of the show today.
I didn't say that now.
Okay, maybe that.
713-212-5-7.
It's Matt Thomas.
We have Rockets and Mavericks tonight up here in the D.
We got Ross back in the H, and we have you at 713-212-5-790.

This is the Matt Thomas Show.
Happy Halloween, everyone.
1220 on the Matt Thomas show.
I got an unpiped or take I'll get with Ross about music here.
Oh, no.
What is it?
I like Halloween music more than I like Christmas music.
Well, we've known for years.
You hate Christmas.
He was like, that's fine.
Let's move on.
I don't even want to argue with you.
All right, Ross.
Let's try to get a hold of Gary Colsey.
this works out hold on yeah i'm looking for garret cole please yeah this is garrett who's this
this is matt thomas you were on my radio show yesterday matt what oh yeah oh this is that guy
that kept on trying to make fun of me uh what what do you want i want to send my condolences for your
loss yesterday yeah that was a tough one uh we got up five zero and i really
thought we were going to win and at the end of the day it didn't work out mostly because of
Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo. I mean, my goodness, how bad was their defense? But it's a team game
and unfortunately we lost and we'll have to go back to the drawing board and well, I'm going to
sleep on a pile of money tonight, Matt. So you don't sound too upset. Is that a fair indication
of your emotions right now? I'm sorry. I can't hear you over my 330 million dollars, Matt. Can you
you repeat that? So you're not too upset? No, I look. At the end of the day, I want to win games,
and I'm here to win a World Series, but also the new Bugatti I just bought wasn't cheap,
and I'm able to afford that, and I can live in New York City. I don't have to be in the
hell hole that is over there in Houston, and so not the way I wanted it to go, but I'm happy
to have all the money that I have and live a great life with my wife, Amy, and I can't wait
to dress up tonight for Halloween.
And no, we're not going to be Kermit and Piggy.
I knew you were going to say that.
Come on, Matt.
Can I ask what you're going to dress up at?
Can I ask what you're dressing up as?
Yes, I'm going to be Woody, and she's going to be Buzz Light Year.
Okay.
And will you stay in Midtown Manhattan, or are you going to go on the surface?
And we're going to go into infinity and beyond tonight, if you know what I mean.
Man, you don't sound like you're upset at all that you lost a 5-0 lead.
You know, in this business, Matt, as you know, you probably put together terrible shows
week after week, and you have to have a short memory, and you've got to be ready to go back there and focus.
So I'm looking forward to 2024, spending a lot of money and laying with Buzz Lightyear tonight.
All right.
Well, I just wanted to let you know the city of Houston.
I mean, I've got to be brutally honest with you, Gary, because I feel like our relationship is built that way.
we were not rooting for you we were hoping that your squad was going to lose and it was
yeah i know and it was actually really why not i gave my heart and soul to that city
yeah but you you put the scott boris hat on right away you don't even care about it with the
freaking hat it's my lucky hat scott boris made me a pile of money i love scott boris he was
the best man at my wedding i hope he can speak at my funeral i love scott boris i'm loyal to scott
Boris and that was my lucky hat and actually I forgot it yesterday and that's why I gave up all those
runs and that's why Anthony Rizzo didn't cover first base.
All right.
Last question.
What's your relationship now with Anthony Rizzo like today?
I hope to never talk to him again.
He cost me a world series.
All right.
Garrett, thank you very much.
Enjoy your offseason and we look forward to seeing you in your Buzz Lightyear and Woody costume later tonight.
whatever
Anthony Rizzo sucks
Trevor Bauer sucks
and Houston sucks
suck it
Garrett
Colin a mobile
joining us here
on the Matt Thomas
show of Ross
he really doesn't like
Trevor Bauer
nothing like
why is he taking shots
at Houston too
we loved him
we opened arms with him
you know what
I think he was trying to play it cool
but he was really angry
yeah
he's not happy with Anthony Rizzo
no he's not
And he kept on blaming Rizzo.
Was it his fault?
No, I think that people were saying that Rizzo kind of lollygagged it over there.
He didn't, once he grabbed the bowl, he didn't necessarily hustle to the bag, as a kids would say.
Yeah, but he can hardly move.
I don't know if he would have gotten over there.
He is slow and expensive and can't hit.
Yes.
Other than that, he's very valuable.
It's fantastic, yes.
I got to be honest with you, and I don't mean to be myopic when it comes to Houston.
but the Yankees lost yesterday Ross in a very Houston way.
Right?
Does that make sense?
No!
No!
Houston has two championships recently with the Astros.
Don't go there.
We don't have to hear that.
It's not Choke City against the Suns in like 1993 or whatever.
Don't bring up the older's Buffalo games, which are trying to tell me too, huh?
Come on, man.
Distant memories.
Distant memories.
Or Dave Smith blown the lead in the 86 series.
against the Mets.
Or Dame Lillard's catch or Chris Paul's
hamstring. Oh, we don't need to hear.
Oh, God.
Oh, you know what it was, Ross?
That was a Houstonian loss.
Stop.
It was.
Man, I put out a hundred high schoolers
and they catch that freaking fly ball
from Aaron Judge, that
Aaron Judge dropped.
Yeah, it was, I mean,
one for the, I mean,
help me out super routine right i mean i was in the plane so i didn't see every single but super routine
extremely 100 percent should have been caught a thousand times out of a thousand
oh lordy congratulations the dodgers thanks for destroying your city right away
ross it took them like an hour to destroy l.a correct i mean my god
they had like 200 people at a nike store going in there and just stealing gear was
Was it 200 people?
Were they stealing Dodgers gear?
What were they doing?
Well, I don't know what they were doing, but go look up Nike destruction in Los Angeles.
You'll be able to find it.
All right.
Let's get a little Texan chatter going next.
Anthony Beck is on Jets Radio.
He will join us next.
Time is 1227.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross 713-212-5-790.

1231 of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
I'm here in Dallas for Rockets and Mavericks.
Tonight I'll have the call for you, beginning with the pre-game show on the network at 7.
Launchpad starts at 6.30 right here on Sports Talk 7.
And he's joining us now is the head football coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks.
You're saying, well, Matt, why are we talking XFL right now?
Will we will?
But we're also going to talk about the New York Jets, tonight's Texans opponent.
And the man who calls the games with Bob with Susan on the Jets network is Anthony Beck,
who was a former tight end, did some games against for the Houston ESPN for the Cougars years ago with the American Athletic Conference and joins us here on Sports Talks Seminary.
Anthony, Matt, thanks for joining us.
How did you celebrate National Tightens Day last week?
You know, it's nice because, you know, a lot of my, you know, constituents in the past, my wife and some people that know me, they post some pictures of me and stuff like that make me feel good since it's been hell.
what now almost
2013 years since I put on the uniform
so it's good man I celebrated
obviously I called the game
so I was able to watch football but
it was good to see some some throwback
West Virginia picks online and
a couple jet picks online so it was good
stuff who is the greatest
tight end in NFL history
greatest tight end in NFL history
I'll go with Gronk
I just think
you know his run was
was pretty impressive and he did everything.
I mean, you know, we can pull clips of him blocking a guy out of bounds into the bleachers, right?
So I like complete tight ends.
You know, I got a lot of appreciation for the tight ends that play now in their skill set,
but Gronk was one of a kind and he did everything great.
For sure, for sure.
Anthony joining us here.
I'm Anthony back with us on Sports Talk 790.
Now, obviously, the Jets get a lot of national attention with all the games and being in the market.
we focus obviously on the Houston
sports side of things.
I am perplexed, Anthony,
that the Jets have gone off
to the start they have so far at 2 and 6.
And you've seen every game,
you've been in every one of them.
Is there a way to wrap it up in a nice package
to explain what has happened?
Because you've got great running backs,
you've got skill position receivers.
I don't think Aaron's career is over with.
Your defense has got one of the best corners
in the game in Soss Garner.
help me to the Houston audience.
What has gone wrong this year in a nutshell?
Yeah, you know, I just think from a week-to-week standpoint,
it's been just a lack of execution by multiple players taking their turns
that have really, you know, set this team back.
And I think as the weeks have gone on, you know, I think Aaron's played decent.
I just, he's not the same Aaron Rogers, but I don't think, at least I didn't.
I didn't want the Iron Rogers of, you know, 2018.
I wanted a guy that can run a system, get the ball where it needs to go,
and what the playmakers this team has, go make some plays.
You know, I think we're second in the NFL and drop balls.
That was an issue early on.
Then there was some penalties, and some games, there wasn't a lot of penalties,
but some of those penalties were strategic moments in the game where it costs us.
The special teams hasn't been great.
Obviously, it's documented.
Greg's Erlein struggles.
throughout the year. And then defensively
of late, it's not
been at its best.
You know, especially in the fact when you let the
Patriots drive down the field. And
I think a couple things come with that. I mean, you have
a designated safety
situation.
And also, you know, your head coach is now
your, was your full-time defensive
coordinator. And me being a head coach,
you know, I want to sit in on
offensive meetings and be a part of that game plan
for the entire time that we put
the run install on the play install as. But
I might be in there 20 minutes and all of a sudden I get pulled out because I got to do other head coaching duty.
So I'm not there for the whole install.
So, you know, I can imagine late nights.
Those things, I mean, ideally, Jeff Holbrook is a head coach in this league somewhere at some time.
But in the circumstances that it's in, it's not an easy proposition.
So combine all those things, I just think to me it's a lack of execution all the way through.
And Aaron's kind of pressing right now.
I think he's trying to do maybe a little too much.
and, you know, with the changes and everything,
I think, you know, everybody's trying to get it right,
but I think simply just going out and just playing good ball
is enough for this team to be good,
to be one of the better teams in the league.
But until they show that, you know,
they're just a collection of really good players right now.
So you mentioned it's a different Aaron Rogers
in terms of is it types of plays,
is it getting rid of the football a second too late,
maybe getting into the line of scrimmage a little bit?
Tell me some differences.
If no one had seen him as a jet this year as compared to maybe the last year or so in Green Bay.
Yeah, I mean, he's doing things at times where you're like, man, that's the legit hall of fame quarterback.
And then there's times where maybe he doesn't quite trust the protection, but it's there.
Or he trusts the protection and it's not there.
So now it's like, now, you know, getting into a rhythm.
I mean, the best game he played all year was against the Patriots in the first game they played.
I mean, creating plays on the move, getting out of the pocket, doing all these things.
You know, he's a little nicked up in those areas.
He's not that guy.
He can't do it week to week.
But in that moment, that looked like a guy that was trending in the right direction.
Unfortunately, that's not a guy that can consistently do that at this point in his career.
So winning from the pocket, obviously, has got to be a leap.
And for him, you know, being able to have some type of run game around him consistently,
that that has not been there of late.
and, you know, for him to go out there and do it all.
Now, to the other flip side is, you know, he's not quite hitting, you know,
I'm a layup guy, right?
Like, you know, if you're a really good quarterback, you're a little older, right,
but you got, I mean, you could see, do everything.
Like, to me, the Jets for the last 10 years haven't had a quarterback to just hit the layups, right?
Like, Zach Wilson tried to, but he couldn't complete him because he was just so inaccurate, right?
So for, like, for me, it's like sometimes you see him pull the trigger back on a couple circumstances.
Like, just get the ball to the guys and let them do their thing.
Move the sticks, move the chains, and just execute at that level.
I just think that consistency right now has to be the thought process.
The plays and whatever it's been, I actually think that, you know, from a standpoint of the offense, this is his system.
I mean, this is him and Hackett work together.
And Todd Downing is running the same thing.
I actually think Todd Downing's called some, you know, two good games since he's been here.
But again, it's just this execution situation.
And at the end of the day, man, players got to go out there and play.
best players got to show up consistently.
And they're not doing that.
It's not just Aaron. I mean, they got a lot of good players.
You just talked about. They got a lot of good players on this roster.
But it may be the left guard one time, the right tackle one time.
It might be a receiver.
It might be the running back.
It might be the tight end.
You cannot have that.
And it starts from the top down.
You know, it's got to be handled.
It's got to be dealt with.
Guys have to take accountability.
And every team's dealing with it.
But, you know, at some point, the Jets have to get over the hump and play a good game completely.
And they haven't done that, really, since their win versus the Patriots, about five, five weeks ago.
Yeah, a couple more minutes here with Anthony Beck calls the color analysis on the Jets Radio Network.
The Texans are sending a woeful offensive line to East Rutherford tonight.
Tell me about the defensive pressure, the front four, really the front seven.
Do you think that's a way the Jets can get to C.J. Stroud is by maybe using one of their strengths?
Yeah, I mean, listen, you know, CJ's obviously missing a lot of his key receiving options.
And I think just watching him the last couple weeks is he may be holding all the ball a little bit too long,
waiting for some of those other targets to kind of get open.
I think for me, it gets a little simple.
I think everything has to flow through Joe Mixon in this game for them to have the success that they want.
You know, I think their line has been okay, but they are struggling.
Obviously, left guard, you know, green seems to be just from what I'm on much,
in a bit of a weak link right now and then
some other injuries have caused
them maybe to
have a setback and that but I think C.J. Strata
is enough now, do you have enough weapons
to get it done? Sure, I mean, you know,
you look at a guy like
Tank Dell, you know, you just don't have a receiver
or one guy you can lean on. I think Dalton
Schultz, I think, becomes a big priority.
And if you look at the history of the Jets defense,
last couple of the tight ends, but kind of a
place where they've had some
issues, you know, containing a
tight end. I mean, I think he's really talented.
I was really high on him when he was a free agent coming out of Dallas.
He felt like he could be a game-changing tight end, and that's what he was in Dallas.
So I think CJ Shroud just got to just looking at from their perspective is just kind of change what the priorities are.
I think he's so good.
And then I watch him on me.
He's so talented.
He's just so smart with the football.
I mean, you guys are fortunate, you know, to have a guy like that.
And, you know, I'm just kind of doing like a little bit of a study because this big talk right now is about, you know, why these quarterbacks coming out.
out or, you know, have so many struggles.
And I think it comes down a couple of things like, you know, how many games did they play
and start in college, you know, how much experience do they have in their completion percentage?
And when you look at him and just his year, I don't think anybody had more than 30 games
starting out of college, but he was kind of the enigma of that draft class in 2023,
but it was almost a 70% past completion at the quarterback position.
So, you know, I just think, you know, he's another guy, you can use his legs a little bit
as well. I mean, a lot of man-to-man defense
the Jets are going to play. I mean, you've seen the
quarterbacks week the week. They
getting out of their lanes, you know, maybe you take
off and run instead of holding on to that a little quicker.
So there will be a pass rush tonight.
It is good. Will McDonald is a good player.
And Hassan Reddick didn't show up in
the stat box last week, but he did
open up the ability for
Quinn and Williams to have a big game
last week. So that's what happens when you add
the other pass rush. Now, Quinn and Williams has a little
less to have occupied
to him on certain situations.
And he showed up.
So when you're talking about quarterbacks and young quarterbacks,
probably the one place you don't want to have your pressure is in your face,
and you're going to be facing one of the better ones in the NFL and Quinn and Williams.
We mentioned at the very top that you are also a coach in the XFL.
We have seen broadcasters in baseball and basketball leave the booth to get on to the field.
Is the NFL part of your dream, or are you kind of like in having the flexibility of kind of doing both?
Yeah, I mean, right now my priority is kind of.
coaching.
You know, anytime you can, I mean, the job that I took on with the Jets probably, you know,
it's, it's been 25 years since they had somebody different.
So, you know, at some point, I'll probably get fired, right?
And I'll just do this for the rest of my life.
So whatever that happens, I got something to fall back on.
But yeah, you know, my goal is to continue to be a head coach in the UFL, which was formerly
the XFL.
And I just keep doing that.
I mean, you know, continue to win, continue to build my resume.
I'm trying to expedite that process.
I do want to be a head coach in college football.
And, of course, the NFL is a path for me that makes sense now where I can get there the quickest.
And, you know, working on those things moving forward, I've had some opportunities to kind of slide into the NFL at a positional standpoint.
And I just think right now continue to be a head coach, continue to be a leader of men.
I'm a CEO guy.
I'm a guy that oversees extremely detailed, excels in messaging, knows how to handle people very where.
and tries to really be elite in the situational part of the game because I don't call the play.
So I have to be elite in that department.
And I learn every week from college coaches and NFL head coaches on what not to do.
So being a former player, being in those circumstances as a player now as a coach,
you know, those things are a premium for me.
So just continuing to grow and be at my best.
And then, like I said, I love to make the transition to be a head coach in college when that time comes.
Maybe when my son graduates too, I'd probably be better too, watching him play at Iowa State.
Yeah, for sure.
And we saw the Cyclones there.
Certainly a very good team in the Big 12.
I got 30 seconds left, and thank you so much for your valuable time here.
A lot of us here in Houston think this could be a potential trap game, short week, long travel up to New York,
beat up offensive line.
Defensive players are an issue.
If the Jets win tonight, what happens for New York for that to happen?
Yeah, they have balanced offensively.
I mean, yeah, I don't think it's a trap game.
The Jets are a good team.
They're just record isn't there.
When they show up and it turns on and the light goes, I mean,
you're going to be a hard team to deal with.
So, you know, I don't know if that's going to happen tonight.
It's a wait and see.
But Brise Hall, Braylon, our problems in the backfield.
You know, they're offensive line.
They're, you know, outside of Elijah Vera Tucker being out,
they're pretty good, you know, physically up front.
They just haven't been able to maintain and get to the second level.
And, you know, their receivers are dangerous.
Devon DeVos
does he take a big leap
from two games that play?
And Garrett Wilson obviously is a guy that can
beat anybody one-on-one.
So a lot of matchups,
we got to block your edge guys.
If we don't block the edge guys, then it's going to be a problem
for obviously a quarterback like Aaron Rogers,
who isn't moving around as well as he wants to.
So the ball's going to come out of his hands pretty quick
if that's the case.
So if they get some time, can have some balance
and take advantage of some of those edge rushers
and what their strengths are,
and this is a dangerous game for Houston or anybody they're playing.
But until they show it, that ultimately is going to be the goal.
Continued success to you and your family.
Thank you, Anthony, for the time.
We really, really appreciate it.
You got it.
Matt, that's having me on, but...
You got it.
That's Anthony back joining us.
The radio announcer part of the broadcast team of the New York Jets,
head coach with the Battlehawks in the UFL,
and again, his son is a player for Iowa State,
one of the premier teams in the Big 12th conference.
A lot of stuff to get to on that if you want to recap in
that Anthony had to say about the Jets.
Look, it comes down to execution, just like it is every week in the NFL, but a good perspective from New York.
1245 Sports Talk 790, if you want to jump into the conversation.
We have Dr. Roto coming up in 45 minutes from now.
If you want to get in on the World Series from yesterday, you can certainly do that.
And when we return, the clock has started for one of our all-time favorite Astros.
We'll talk about that when we return.

Hi, this is former running back of Herschel Walker.
You're listening to Matt Thomas in the Sports Talk 790.
Another take, Ross, that you'll disagree with.
You ready?
No.
Maybe this song is better than the movie.
I like this song better when it was I Want a New Drug by Huey Lewis in the News.
Oh, are you going to lyrics, rip-off or vocal?
It's more of a melodic rip-off?
Yeah, melodic rip-off.
Okay.
Just they sued and won, right?
I believe they did, yes.
Ray Parker has another song called Jack and Joe, which is Outstanding.
Outstanding?
Yes.
Maybe I'm selling a little bit too much.
Okay.
I'll take your word for.
for it. By the way, there is a new documentary coming out in late November, I believe.
Oh, God, somebody sent this to me.
Who's the, who sent it to you? I think I know what you're talking about. Go ahead.
The documentary will be coming out on November the 29th. It will be called Music Box Yacht Rock.
According to the network, this is HBO. The film,
Quote, chronicles the emergence and popularity of the West Coast soft pop, soft rock pop culture, epitomized by musical artists such as Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, Kenny Logan, Steely Dan, and Toto.
Oh, man, Ross, we have to have a watch party for that, don't we?
I'm good.
Come on.
It was retroactively dubbed Yacht Rock in 2005 by a parody website series.
So it's a made-up genre.
But it's still good.
It's not good.
It's excellent.
All right.
You like it.
That's fine, but it's a made-up genre.
Either way.
Okay.
All right.
We have the clock starting for the five-day watch for Alex Bregman, the negotiating period.
I'm finding it, frankly, amusing.
No announcement yet.
That people are like, come on, Jim Crane.
Come on, Dana Brown.
Make this happen right now.
You've got to do it.
Hey, everybody?
Hello.
Hello.
They've had the indictment.
entire damn season to make this happen in the season before in the season before yeah i mean brab i mean come
on they didn't go let's wait until the end of the world series to have a serious conversation with bregmy
give me a break you all got to realize come on put two and two together here
the amount of people on social media go this is the time to step it up step it up
i think jim's done a pretty good job to stepping up a lot of stuff but jim holds true now whether
you agree with it or not is a different issue
But Jim Crane holds to a certain formula for financial compensation for his players, the ones that he wants to lock up.
It's good, very, very good money, but it's no mega-long deals.
And sometimes the player, or in this case, many players, look for the mega deal.
And Alex Spragman will have this opportunity to go try to find that mega deal.
It doesn't mean he's going to find it.
but certainly he will want to go search it out.
And if I'm Alex, I don't blame him for that.
Now, just because you go out there and search doesn't mean you're going to find something better.
But as we've talked about many times, sports are, but it only takes one team to go, you know what, you are worth the seventh year.
You are worth the $31.5 million per year or whatever that number of it.
Yeah, we'll take a hit on the back end, pay you when we know you're not going to be worth it when you're 37 to buy what's left of your prime.
That's what it would be doing.
Yeah, yeah.
Let's go to before the top of the hour, talk to Larry and Galveston on 790.
Hi, Larry.
Hey, Matt.
How are you doing?
Good.
You know, personally, I'm with Jim Crane on, forget about going on the really long-time deals.
If Gregman had any sense, he would sit down and think about,
where he has been
and where he is
going, he is one of the best
defensive
third basements in baseball.
Without a doubt.
Has his bat tailed off some?
Yes, it has.
Okay? But who doesn't?
You know,
and
you know, Jose Al-Tubei
wants him on the team.
We have the best
second base.
in baseball right now, without a doubt.
And he just needs to say, okay, Astros,
look, if y'all want to give me six and 185 or 190,
I'm good with that.
Well, I don't know.
Thanks, Larry, for the phone call.
Again, nobody has ever announced from the Astros what's been out there.
And we'll talk more about that to start the second hour of the Matt Thomas show.
Plus we've got with Ross, obviously, and we've got Dr. Roto at 130.
We've got the Ross Rotten 5 at 230.
And believe it or not today, at 250.
Lots of get two plus Eddie Nunez.
I thought of director of the University of Houston to join us.
More on the Bregman situation.
The question I want to ask, and Ross and I'll throw this out is, is there a number,
is there a length of term in Jim Crane's mind right now that he says,
if I text him and say, I'll give you this and this.
This is as far as I go, or is there any wiggle room?
We'll discuss more of that.
Start the second hour of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross here from Dallas on Sports Talk 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
Lots to get to at 102 on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Sports Talk 790.
I'm hearing Dallas for tonight's game between the Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks.
Ross, I wish I was your house today.
You have the double TV bit going.
You'll have the rockets on.
You'll have the Texans on, right?
Come on over.
Yeah, I'll be busy.
Okay.
It's been life-changing, and I don't know how I lived without it.
Multiple TV screens in the living room.
I mean, every night, for example, last night there was a World Series,
and then there was NBA on ESPN.
Yep.
Watching the Celtics get blown out.
It's just about every single night you can put on a couple things,
especially when NBA season gets humming around.
Yeah, by the way, NBA opening night numbers television, not good for the league.
Really?
Yeah, they were about down 14% from a year ago.
14%.
That's significant.
Yeah.
The reality is this, and it fell on deaf ears when I asked the commissioner a couple of years ago.
I still think it's a terrible, terrible mistake to start the season so early.
I just do.
Yeah, and they, well, the first game was a complete blowout,
and I guess people weren't tuning in to watch LeBron James make history with Brony James.
Yeah, it was so Wemby's first game as a spur was the game that led last year.
Oh, interesting.
I guess I got, hmm, but ratings for the NBA, I think, down as a whole.
There's a lot of people talking about the state of the league.
It's just too much, it's two, three point driven.
What do you think?
Old man Bob Ryan was like, the three point line is the worst thing that has ever happened in the history since I've been alive covering the NBA,
which has been forever because he's ancient.
You know, the reality is, Ross, I don't think I can answer this because I, I,
I love all parts of the league.
I love professional basketball.
So maybe I'm not the person that would answer it.
I think the biggest problem the league has, frankly,
is it just gets swallowed up with everything else going on.
You have college football, pro football, you have the World Series.
Now, granted, the World Series is not going to necessarily get you,
but if you get a big market in there, it's going to take away some people.
I still believe you should start in mid-December,
but that just nobody seems to believe.
me because they don't want the ratings, they don't want the ratings hit in the summertime
for the NBA finals.
I think the league is in a great state in terms of the talent.
Like you mentioned, Wimby and Janice and Yokic and, I mean, Embed and hopefully
Jalen Green or, you know, like the individual talents, I think, are great.
But I think the macro, the style of play where one team hits their three-pointers, the other
team doesn't, and that's the team that wins and loses.
And it seems kind of like that.
How is it every night?
The state of play is not in a good place,
even though the talent, I think, is in a good place.
Yes.
And I do believe that guys resting and sitting out games will hurt the league.
Not right now because it's early in the season,
but it's going to hurt on a regular old January night
where LeBron says, I don't want to play against the bucks because I'm not feeling good.
Or I'm not trying to throw LeBron, but just any of it.
I mean, Joel Embed is a star in this league,
and he's not playing because he's taking it easy.
I got a problem.
The playing tournament gives a little bit of a boost this time of year,
but I don't think it's enough to justify the overall fact that you've got a lot of people,
not that the playing game, the in-season tournament.
You don't put the stars out there on a regular basis,
you're going to be in a real tough spot.
And I think part of that is, too,
is what kind of has went into a ring culture in the NBA.
We only talk about rings, and Michael Jordan, six rings, six rings, six rings.
That's all we talk about.
And it's like, well, if we're only going to prioritize rings,
and that's all that matters at the bottom line when we talk about the NBA,
rather than players being great every day on a night-in-night-out basis,
you're going to have the conglomeration of super teams.
You're going to have the devaluation of the regular season,
where everybody's going to try to rest and say, yeah, Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls,
doesn't matter.
I'm trying to be ready for the playoffs because I want to win rings, rings, rings, rings.
Yep.
And one more thing on this, you're also adding a huge layer.
of what is it, non-linear broadcasting, is that what he would say?
The Amazon Prime and the Peacock and that kind of thing.
Yeah.
You're going to take a group of people that are going to be like, you know what?
I forgot the games were on.
Mm-hmm.
So I think, yeah, the, well, even the NFL is getting hit by that.
That ESPN Plus Monday Night Football game, it was like the fewest people they'd had watching a Monday Night Football game.
I think it was in years, in years and years.
I'll go ahead and find that.
I can find the number.
But I don't want to hear anybody in any of these leagues complaining about it because they're taking the checks.
Yes, they are.
You know when you take a check from Amazon Prime or Netflix or who else, Hulu was to broadcast games, you're going to lose audience.
So just either just take the check and stop complaining about it.
Yeah, Chargers Cardinals, a lowest watch game.
It was on ESPN Plus.
Right.
First time an NFL game drew fewer than two million viewers since 2008.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-mm-mm.
All right, 713-212-579.
We were talking about Alex Bregman a minute ago.
In your gut, Rossi,
yes.
If we were to look at a notepad that Jim has an upper right corner of his desk,
or he's got a notepad on his phone,
is there a number and a length of years that is on that phone right now
that he's like, this is where, this is as far as I'm going to,
go or is there a huge part of me that says he's going to let the market dictate it or is there
a part of me that says they've just decided that they need to move on from Alex and try
something else because maybe the best days of Alex Pregman are behind him.
I think there is a number and I think you're going to think it's ridiculous.
Go ahead.
5.125.
Now you and I have a lunch bet or a post-show bet.
as just me guessing, by the way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Six years deal he gets, none of us wins.
If he gets seven or more, you win,
if he gets five or less, I win.
Yeah, you're hoping, the way you win,
I don't think he's going to sign a five-year deal,
but if he gets like one, a three-year deal with opt-outs,
and that's how you win, I think.
Yeah, yeah.
I do believe there is a number.
I don't believe that the decline of Regman,
at least offensively,
is enough for them to say,
I just don't want to bring them back,
especially because there isn't a guy in the wings
that's ready to step in right away.
They obviously, Ross, when Carlos Correa left,
they thought enough of Jeremy Payne to say,
this is a guy we can fill in
in a much smaller value.
I don't think that guy with the Astros is ready for 25.
It might be ready for 26.
Do you piecemeal a 25 and go get a fridge
on a one or two-year deal?
You could certainly do that at a lesser amount.
But I'm just telling you, Rossi, if they would have thought that if in Jim Crane's mind,
I can't leave, let Alex Brighman leave.
He's going to be an Astro for Life.
This deal would have been done by spring training of last year.
I agree with you.
He's going to hit the market.
He loves Houston, but you've got two World Series championships.
There's no reason to stay here, nothing to chase, nothing to, I mean, he's one of the all-time great Astros.
if he never plays another game,
it's time to go get paid,
and it's time to go get the maximum.
And I'm not faulting him at all for that.
And I just don't think,
if you remember, when Carlos Correa,
I love Carlos Correa.
Remember he said publicly,
he was like, yeah, they offered me $5.160.
And I wasn't going to take it.
Like, he just wasn't going to take it.
And so $5160 to him was a slap in the face
because Jim Crane doesn't want to go over five.
So that's why I'm guessing $5,125,
maybe maximum $5,150,
somewhere in that neighborhood,
because, I mean, the economics of baseball have gone up.
But I think he's going to stay hard-line.
If he did it with Carlos Correy, he's going to do it with Alex Bregman,
and Alex Bregman's going to look elsewhere for unemployment.
It's to be tough.
It's going to be a very bitter pill to swallow for a lot of people.
But I would say, Ross, it isn't a consensus.
It is not a – and I know that Jose Al-Tube came out right before the end of the season.
It was like, he has got to stay here.
Yes.
He was doing that because he loves his teammate.
They will be friends for the rest of their life regardless of whether or not they put a glove on to work.
They generally love each other.
And he doesn't want a part of the great past to go away.
But everything comes full circle and you lose people and people go other directions or try other things.
This is not out of the ordinary with any walk of life.
But I can guarantee you that Jose Altuve did not say that.
the things that he wanted to say. Not on one different
occasion, but two different times.
And all of a sudden, the light bulb went off
in Jim Crane's office and said, well, Jose Outtube says, I got to do it.
I got to do it.
Yeah, probably not.
And it's unfortunate. It's going to be a big loss.
It's going to be a loss in the field and a loss with, you know,
Taylor Scott and others have talked about the game planning with the pitchers
and being involved in mound visits and all that type of stuff.
It's a loss.
There are so many intangibles that you just don't see on paper that Alex
Breggman brings the table and we unfortunately and hopefully we're wrong about this.
Hopefully we got to start preparing for the option of that not being a part of the Astros
future.
713-212-5-790.
If you want to jump in on the conversation, 7-13-212-5-7-90, Texans Jets tonight,

What's your prediction on the Texans game?
Anthony Beck was with us a few minutes ago.
Says, hey, they're a good football team.
just have not been able to put it together.
It isn't about a question of talent.
It's about execution.
Andy said that front seven today for the Jets could pose some serious problems
for your least favorite left guard ever in Texans history.

Oh, I missed the Gordy parodies.
I'm tearing up, Maddie.
That's sort of the good old days.
I'm totally blamed Locked on Gordy for this because he would actually care about our radio station and care about this show.
Hey, he cares about our station.
He's just got to, look, you deal with Stan Northfleet takes five days a week and see how you hold that.
Come on.
You know what?
You know, I apologize.
I retract that pot of the previous statement.
But, man, he's doing shows in Jackson and Colleen.
Yeah, he's got to be on in Lafayette, Mobile.
Monroe.
He's on in Mobile, Alabama.
Dothan.
Dothan.
He's hanging out and doing Pensacola Sports Leader.
I mean, come on, Gordy, give us a parody once in a while.
I think if they make the playoffs, we have to hold them to it.
Every week there in the playoffs, we need a parody.
Yeah, yeah.
A parody for, yes.
He doesn't know this yet, but he's not required by state law to do that.
All right, it is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
713-212-1-2-5-7-90.

I have a question on my Twitter account, Ross, at SportsMT.
You need to follow it because it's great.
My question was,

And I put on their wrong answers only.
Okay.
Here are some of the responses.
Oh, boy.

Let's talk to Ken on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Ken, good afternoon.
Good afternoon, sir.
I just want to make one little statement, and I just hope that the only
and the top organization of Astros would finally come to conclusion that if they want a consistent team year after year,
you've got to dig in your pockets.
And I don't understand why they don't do that.
Do they just want a team that's just mediocre sometimes, or do they not just want to pay them?
You know, I don't get it.
Wait a minute.
Did not the Astros go to seven straight American League Championship Series until this year?
yeah but there's always someone that is dissatisfied and they you know look what happened to
nolan ryan back way that way back then you mean in 1980 you're you're going to give me a
1980 reference no i'm just going to say what they did they don't want to get in their pockets
and pay the money well they did pay they have paid Alex pregnant before they have paid
Jose l to be multiplications they have paid your honor on alvarez they have paid you're on alvarez they
have paid Justin Verlander.
Give me some more, Rossi. Who else did they
pay took and care of it?
Josea Brayu.
Jose Abraeu they paid.
And he's the example of why they don't want to pay.
Some of the money spent it hasn't been
great, but they had a top five payroll
this year. I mean, honestly,
they're not miserly.
Okay, well, they got a lot
of dissatisfied players then, I guess,
because they're not getting what the other
teams that are consistent ones get,
I don't think. I might be wrong,
but that's my opinion.
All right.
Thanks for the phone call.
Let's be brutally honest on some things here.
The George Springer deal was not good for the Toronto Blue Jays.
He has been in disappointment.
Garrett Cole, to me, feels like an overpay.
Now, granted, he has helped them go on,
but it still felt like that was way overmarket value for him.
Who else has left?
Charlie Morton was a guy that would have been...
Well, Charlie Morton, they should have kept, quite frankly.
Charlie Morton was reasonable.
That would have been that point.
That's actually the one I'll go to bat for.
Carlos Correa has been okay up and down for the twins.
But I wouldn't say great value for that for the twins.
I would say, Garrett Cole's been excellent.
I mean, he won the Cy Young last year.
But maybe I'm just thinking of it's just too much to pay one pitcher.
It's just.
Yeah, $30 million for an ace.
That's market value.
What is he making now?
30, oh, 36.
Oh, it's got to be north of that.
36 a year.
remember he'd miss some time before the start of the season
yeah he likes that money apparently when he
called the show earlier yeah
and he did not like the reference that he and his wife
ran dressed up as curran and miss piggy that was
but i didn't bring that up he brought that up himself so he was preemptive
he said why is his wife going to be buzz light year though that's kind of weird
yeah that is weird uh you know look players leave all the time it's not
it's not personal it's it's completely financial
you know what it is jim crane has
a stance. He does not want to play players
deep into his 30s, players
that he broke that promise for
that rule for, Verlander,
who was terrible this year, and Jose
Bray, who you had to eat a year and a half
plus of that contract. So,
I mean, I think the examples
generally work in his favor.
Yeah. All right, let's get to Dr. Roto
here. You got any questions about your fantasy football team?
We are going to get them answered in the next half hour

And I've got to give me the news.
I really don't know what I should do.
Fastest 30 minutes of Major Market Radio.
We say hello to the one, the only Dr. Roto here on Sports Talk 790.
Doc, first of all, good to hear your voice.
Secondly, we've got to figure out a serious situation with the Texans receiving corps this week.
Snow Stefan Diggs.
No Nico Collins until next week.
against Detroit.
Was it worthy of picking up some people on waivers if available for the Texans tonight game against the Jets tonight?
That's going to be an ugly game, MT.
It is.
I do think, look, Joe Mixon is absolutely in play.
The Jets have not been good at stopping the run, and you know that the Texans have been leaning on the run,
and they're going to have to do that tonight.
Luckily, they're playing the Jets who play a lot of man coverage.
That feeds right into what Tankdale wants to do.
You know we still have Dalton Schultz there who's just fine.
Now, in terms of the other receivers, you're going to see Hutchinson play, you're going to see Metschie play.
And I think you're really going to see Robert Woods take a big step up.
Woods is that veteran guy who knows the routes, knows where to go.
I think he's probably the safest bet.
But I don't think I want any of those three guys for fantasy.
So give me Mixin, give me Dell, give me Schultz, and Stroud, and that's it.
Anybody on the jet side?
Yeah, I won Brees Hall for sure.
Rogers, the problem with Breece Hall is, you know, what Rogers likes to do.
They get on the three-yard line.
They're not running the ball.
He's trying to pair of stats and get some touchdowns.
Devante Adams looks like he can't get separation.
So I don't know whether it's the lack of knowing the playbook or maybe it's that hamstring.
He doesn't look great.
Garrett Wilson looks way better.
Will I start Adams probably?
So I'm going to start Adams.
I'm going to start Wilson and I'll start Breece Hall.
I don't feel great about Aaron Rogers tonight.
All right.
Let's get to the games around the NFL this week.
And again, if you got a question about a particular player
or players. You can start dialing in right now to 7-1-3-21-2-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. We've got a quarterback change in Indianapolis.
Joe Flacco, difference maker this week, yes or no?
Yes, and here's why. You can't win games when your quarterback completes 10 passes.
It's just not enough. It's not good for your receivers.
Richardson is not ready. And now you've got to play Minnesota, who's going to blitz, literally, on every down.
it could turn ugly.
So Flacco gives them the best chance to win it.
I think it also helps their receivers.
Michael Pittman and Josh Downs is in play.
On the other side, T.J. Hawkinson is back, which is great to see.
Justin Jefferson is always in play.
And I got a very good friend in Minnesota who calls us the squeaky wheel narrative
because Jordan Addison is complaining about not getting enough targets,
so they'll try to feed him as well.
All right.
So there's your thought about the Sunday night game.
Let's get to Detroit and Green Bay.
cannot wait for this bad boy Sunday at 325.
Tell me if you can go five deep on both sides, correct?
Or are you going to hold off some people on the Green Bay side?
No, no, you can.
The good news is Jordan Love was at practice today.
So I think he's going to give it every chance he can to go.
And if he does, it's a game changer.
So let's just talk about the receivers.
Romeo Dobbs has been sensational.
He's really good against man coverage,
and Detroit rolls out a ton of man coverage.
So we're going to want to look at Dobbs.
like Jane Reed, not as much this week, but I like him. I like Tucker Kraft for sure. And then
keep your eyes on Christian Watson. They may need him to make a big play downfield and challenge this
lion's defense. Look, the lions always come out tough. But what happens is if you start beating them,
they lose confidence quickly. On the other side of the ball, listen, we're playing David Montgomery.
You play him every time. You play Gibbs every time. You play Amal Ross St. Brown every time.
Jameson Williams is still out. I don't trust Sam Laporte as much this week.
I do believe Gough ends up going, but I think they're going to run on Green Bay as much as they can.
So Montgomery Gibbs and Amma-Saint-Ramp, Amma-Ross-Saint-Brown, all can score touchdowns.
All right. Chargers go to Cleveland to take on the Browns.
Brown's a huge victory last week.
Are you buying in on any of the James Winston one week, amazing work that he did last Sunday?
I am.
I'm buying into it.
Now, I think what happened was last week, Baltimore's past defense is not very good.
The chargers have been stingy.
Jim Harba has done a really great job with this team.
So I think they're going to keep the ball,
and they're going to keep the defense and make James dink and dunk, right?
They're not going to let James go deep, which is what James wants to do.
I think that changes the Brown's offense a little bit.
I think you're going to see more Nick Chubb and take a look for David Nujoku and Elijah
Moore.
I don't think they're going to be able to go to Judy and Tillman like they've been doing.
On the other side of the ball, there's a guy if people don't know him,
Ladd McConkey from the University of Georgia.
He's a man-covered specialist.
And, oh, by the way, what do the Browns love playing?
Man coverage.
Ladd-McConkey had two touchdowns last week.
I think he scores again this week.
I really do.
Derek Carr apparently is back for New Orleans.
Do we care when they go to Carolina?
Well, look, I mean, this is the whole season right here for the Saints.
If they don't win this game, it's done.
I think Derek Carr returning is a big thing, and Chris Olive will benefit, you know, immensely.
We haven't heard the name Taysam Hill in a while.
I think you're going to see him.
I don't know if he scores, but I think he'll be involved.
And of course, Alvin Kamara's not 100%, but he, look, this is a game.
I'm still playing him.
I expect that he'll practice in full on Friday.
So you want to start Kamara, you want to start Alave.
Hill, if you're desperate and Carr, if you're desperate on the other side of the ball.
Deonté Johnson is gone, right?
He's in Baltimore.
I think Xavier Leggett is going to be the number one receiver there, and the Saints
roll out a lot of mankind.
coverage, which I think Legate should do a good job against.
All right.
Tampa Bay and Kansas City is the Monday night game.
You see the bucks every single week as you're down on that neck of the woods.
Are they held to skilter offensively?
Are there some weeks that you expect big things happen and nothing does,
and then other weeks where you expect them to be tame and they don't?
And I guess the question would be, are we due for a Kansas City let down a little bit?
I mean, we just don't see very many teams this late in the season remain undefeated.
We are, but I'm not sure the bucks are the team that can get it done.
Now, here's the thing.
The bucks stopped the run.
So now could this be a Patrick Mahomes passing week?
It very well could be.
Could we be seeing way more Hopkins than we did last week?
Yes.
And we're going to certainly see a ton of Kelsey in this game.
Now, do I think Kareem Hunt has a big game, maybe as a receiver more than a runner?
On the other side of the football, I think Baker did a very credible job last week without Godwin, without Mike Evans.
I mean, that's losing a ton of talent.
Kate Otten has been sensational.
And by the way, oh, who's the worst team in the NFL against opposing tight ends?
That's right.
It's a Kansas City Chief.
So Otten's going to have a good game.
And I think they're going to have to run the football with, you know, with Rashad White and Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker.
So Baker's going to throw to Otten and he's going to throw to his receivers a little bit.
But I think they're going to have to control the time of possession and keep Mahomes off the field.
It's going to be hard to do.
I think that, you know, look, is Kansas City going to lose?
yet they will. I just don't think it's going to be this week.
And lastly, Miami, Bo,
how have things changed now the two is back for the dolphins?
Well, look, at least Miami has a semblance of an offense.
There's some rumors down here that they may want to trade mustard.
I think that makes a little sense.
A Chan is sensational, especially with two-back.
He may be one of my plays of the week.
I really like him.
Wright is a very good young running back as well,
so they may not need mustard as much.
Now, look, Jalen Waddle has to get involved.
in this offense. They have not used to them enough. Tyree Kill is sensational, but Buffalo doesn't
like to let you beat them deep. So I think they're going to keep Hill and Waddle in front of them
and just once again, dank and dunk down the field, which is what two is happy to do on the other side
of the ball. Miami, I don't think can stop Buffalo. James Cook has been sensational. Josh Allen
runs when he needs to. Adding Amari Cooper has been sensational. Kalil Shakir has been a great number
two. And by the way, Keon Coleman, the rookie from Florida State, has really been good in the red
zone. So I just don't think Miami's defense can stop Buffalo's offense. All right. You
have a question for Dr. Roto. Get him in right now. At 713-212-790. 7-1-2-790.

It's the Matt Thomas show for lunch on Sports Talk 790.
The good doctor with us on this Halloween.
713, 212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
If you've got a question for the good doc.
And we will start things off with Hugh and Conroe for Dr. Roto on 7-90.
Hi, Hugh.
Hey, how you guys doing?
Good.
Good. Quick question.
2-1-2 for real quick for Roto.
one, Kate Otten or Trey McBride, and number two, two flex positions.
Give me two out of the four.
Josh Downs, Kiann, Kohn Coleman, Amari Cooper, or Etienne.
All right, so we're going to go Otton because it's just a better matchup.
I mean, McBride's been great, but Otton against Kansas City's a great matchup.
I think you've got to go Josh Downs against Joe Flacco is a game changer there.
Downs is a great technical receiver, and as long as Flacco doesn't get blitzed, which he will be
If he can stand in there, he'll find downs.
In terms of Buffalo, look, I like Keon Coleman, but Amari Cooper's no more receiver there.
So let's go with him.
All right, 713-213-2-5-790 for a question for Dr. Roto.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Mike on the Matt Thomas show at Ross with Roto.
Go ahead, Mike.
Afternoon, Doc.
Quick question.
Sam Donald or Kyler Murray to start this week.
Yeah, so listen, I worry about Kyler Murray.
What happened was last week, he had a time to throw.
Miami's pass rush was not there.
You give Kyler time, he's going to do a good job.
But Chicago's got a very swarming pass rush, and I think he's going to suffer.
Donald against the zone defense, the cover three that Gus Bradley likes to run.
I think Donald's going to be fine.
Donald's biggest problem is he holds the ball until the receiver's wide open.
You can't really do that in the NFL, but I think he should be good for two touchdowns this week.
All right.
I'm running a couple emails before back to the phone.
of these three, Dr. Orta, who to start? Kenneth Walker, Breast Hall, or Tony Pollard?
Walker. I mean, that's just a really good spot against the Rams in a game that is about a 49 total, so Vegas likes it too.
PPR League, Garrett Wilson or Michael Pittman, Jr.?
Wow. I don't love Wilson tonight. I don't, but Pittman, look, Pittman's in a better spot. The question is back spasms. You know, we're worried about him.
I would lead Wilson because I don't want to have somebody wait until Monday and then you don't have the player play.
Let me tell you about Pittman.
He's been a number one disappointment for me, not being personal on this roto, but he's let me down considerably.
Yeah, but that's Richardson's completed the fewest number of passes in the league this year.
Is that Pittman's fault?
Okay.
Josh Jacobs or J.K. Dobbins?
Oh, that's a nice one there.
Look, Josh Jacobs is in a tough spot.
I mean, the lions are really good against the run.
I think this is a game that the Packers are going to have to throw the football.
So J.K. Dobbins, not a great spot either on the road, but I'll give, I think that I'll give him a shot there. I'll go with Dobbins.
All right. One of these three in a flex. Kiann, Kowman, Travis A.T.N. or Rashad White?
All right, so let's just talk about ETN.
He's expected to play, but he's going to share opportunities with Tank Bigsbee.
You can't take Tang Biggsby out of the lineup.
He's looked great.
And you're playing Philadelphia, which means you're likely losing.
So I think he got to go Rashad White.
We spoke about it before.
He's good for about, you know, 12 to 15 touches a game.
Usually catches three passes, and they do use him on the goal line.
So I'm going to go Rashad White.
Let's go to Geo on 790 for Dr. Roto.
Hi, Gio.
Hey, guys.
So, Roto, I think Tyrone Tracy is questionable, so I don't know if he's going to play or not.
If he does, that will be my flex.
But in case he does not play, shall I go with Parker, Washington, or shall I go with
Trey Palmer from the Bucks?
Yeah, so I don't think that Singletary is going to play.
Please come in on a short week and usually short week guys with concussions.
don't get cleared. So I would expect that he doesn't play. So look, you're talking about two guys
who are third receivers there. So the question is, I'd rather play the receiver who's got the
worst secondary that he's going up against. The Eagle secondary is bad. And that game could be
a high-scoring game. So give me Parker, Washington. Palmer's okay. I just don't see the Buccaneers
putting more than 20 points on the Chiefs. Kraft or Hawkinson this week.
Oh, the Colts give out plenty of touchdown.
to tight ends. I think Hawkinson is not going to get a full load of snaps, but he could
get a touchdown. I like Hawkinson. Mooney, Spears, or Bigsby and a flex?
I think it has to be Mooney. That Falcons cowboy game is going to be high scoring. Mooney seems
to do really well at home. Kirk Cousins likes going to him. Trayvon Gakes will probably cover
London. So I think Mooney's a good play this week.
Alan on 790 for Dr. Roto. Hi, Alan.
Hello, how are you? Got Colomer.
or Sam Donald is McCupey.
And in a flex position, I have Brian Robinson, Jr. got up Breeze Hall.
Yeah, the problem with Brian Robinson, he's dealing with a knee injury.
So do I think he plays?
Yes, but I think you have to play Bruce Hall.
I mean, if he catches four or five passes, he's going to have more yards.
We mentioned this before about Donald and Murray.
I think Murray is going to suffer against that Chicago pass rush.
I think I'm going to take Sam Donald in a game that shows.
be about 50 points.
Stroud or Cousins?
All Cousins. I mean, look, you play Stroud because you like him and need your guy,
but Cousins is a much better spot this week.
This is a do or die for the Jets.
I mean, if you think could lose this game and still make the playoffs, Jets lose this.
It's over.
Yep.
David in Houston on 790 for Dr. Roto.
Go ahead, David.
Hey, thank you.
Dr. Roto, curious where you're at on Hopkins.
You know, the best quarterback he ever played with was,
Kyle money, I mean, Kyle Murray, and what your thoughts are on him moving forward, but also looking at Cooper Cup or Harrison?
Yeah, I like Cooper Cup a ton. I don't love Harrison this week. I think he's got a really tough matchup against the Bears, and the Bears are going to be angry, right? After last week, they're going to be angry. I really like DeAndre Hopkins. I agree with you. I mean, can you ask for a better guy to play with than Patrick Mahomes? But even as good as Hopkins is, it takes some time.
to get up to the playbook, figure it out.
They only ran him in the slot twice last week, and they went to him both times.
I think the more we see of him, the more involved he's going to be,
and the better fantasy player he's going to be.
So, look, he's going to be sensational by week 12 or 13, but we're only in week nine.
So it's going to take him a little time to ramp up.
Brian and Alvin for Dr. Roto on 790.
Hi, Brian.
Hey, man, Dr. Roto.
Do I do, Chubb, Herbert, for Carolina or Urban for Tampa Bay?
I think you do Chuba Hubbard.
I don't really think Carolina stands a chance to win, but the guy gets 20 touches.
Now, there's a rumor that Jonathan Brooks is coming back this week.
My insider guy for Carolina thinks it's going to be one more week.
So this could be Chuba's last week as the starter.
I think we go with him.
All right.
Let's go to Christian and Cyprus on 790.
Hi, Christian.
Hi, thanks for taking my call.
I've got two quick ones.
Chief's defense or Chargers defense.
and then I need two receivers, and I don't know if I should start Pittman over Wondale Robinson and Jerry Judy.
Yeah, I would start Pittman over Wondale.
I would.
Judy is okay, but he's not great.
I know James likes going to him, but I think you've got Tillman there, you've got Elijah Moore there,
you've got Nick Chub there, you've got a lot of options.
So I'm not big on Judy this week.
In terms of the defense is, look, James Winston could throw two interceptions,
but I think this is all about Kansas City
at home. Baker forces the ball
sometimes. I think I'm taking
Kansas City there and of course, B. Cole Hardman
can return a punt or a kickoff return
for a touchdown. All right. A couple more
before we get to your lock. Let's go to
I believe Allen and spring. Go ahead, Alan.
We're going to Ross or Connor on this one.
I would go Connor on that one easy.
Real quick. I didn't do nothing.
Otten or Bowers in a PPR?
Oh, man. That's a tough one.
Look, Bowers is number one tied in football right now, and Otton's the top five.
I think Otten has a better matchup, so I'll go with him, but boy, they're two great players.
All right, and there was one more.
Kyler Murray or Caleb this week for those quarterbacks.
You know, can I tell you something?
Caleb was one inch from being crowned.
Oh, he was the best rookie quarterback.
He's terrible.
Did you watch him last week?
He's terrible.
Jane Daniels, a million times better.
As much as I don't like Kyler Murray this week, I hate Caleb Williams.
I don't think he's a great quarterback there.
I said it.
I think he's more, you know, sure he's the, yeah, I don't think he's great.
Give me Stroud any day over Caleb.
Give me Jaden Daniels any day over Caleb.
All right, there we go.
Can we go on real quick though, Matt?
Hold on.
No, we have no time.
Oh, half-PPR, Connor or James Connor, Kareem Hunt.
Oh, I like James Connor.
I think they're going to scheme for him.
And if they're going to beat the Bears, they're going to have to run through him.
He's going to get 20 touches.
All right, there you go.
Glad you're able to help out Ross in his league.
Meanwhile, I'm in 11th place and giving up quickly by the week.
Tell him don't quit, please.
It's too late.
All right, ladies' gentlemen, we asked Dr. Roto once a week to give us a knockdown, drag-out 100% solid winner.
We present to you, Dr. Roto's.
Lock of the week.
What do you got this week, Roto?
Speaking of rookies, I like.
I like Malik neighbors.
I don't like the Giants, but I love Malik neighbors.
You're playing Washington, and what's Washington's big weakness all season?
They're secondary.
And so I think Neighbors has a big week.
They're playing a lot of man coverage, and Neighbors is just so the separation he gets enormous.
I think he goes 90 yards and a touchdown.
Let's lock that one in.
And that, my friends, is Dr. Rottos.
Lock of the week.
Where do we find you between now and Sunday?
Always on X of DRROTO at my website over at Dr.ROTO.com and Sirius X-XM
fantasy sports radio, Saturday mornings, 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern.
Outstanding work, as always, my friend. We'll do this again next week. Thank you, as always, for the time.
Take time, bye-bye.
That is the good. The unbelievable, Dr. Rodo with us for half hour every week. It is the fastest 30 minutes,
major market radio. All right, big game for the Cougars against Kansas State.
We'll discuss that and other things next. Eddie Nunez, athletic director,
going to join us for a couple minutes here. 158 on Sports Talk 7-90.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
202 on Sports Talk 790, the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
It comes to you today from Dallas.
I'll have the rockets and the Mavericks beginning with the launch pad at 630.
Network pregame at 7 o'clock.
And then the call from the American Airlines Center at 7.30.
We've got Texans and the Jets also going at the same time.
They're going to be busy listening and watching.
But you're going to hopefully be in attendance on Saturday for a 2.30 tilt between the Houston Cougars.
And the Kansas State Wildcats joining us right now to discuss that, among other things,
is my new best friend, Eddie Nunez, Vice President in the Kledge Athletics at the University of Houston.
Eddie, how are you things?
Going great, man.
How about yourself?
No complaints, just busy with this rockets travel and watching these cougars.
First and foremost, you've been on the job a couple of months.
You've got the office, I think, set up at least the way you want to, at least partially.
Now that you've had your feet on the ground for a little bit, what are some early observations?
of your time running our campus?
It's such a vibrant campus.
It really is a lot more than people actually see.
I've enjoyed walking around, getting through campus,
getting to know many of the faculty, the staff, the students,
and then more than anything else,
getting around and watching our student athletes practice and compete.
So it's been fun.
We've got a lot of things to do here,
but some great, great opportunities in front of us.
really is. You're having a balance. I'm going to assume the hey I want to meet you,
hey, I want to get to know you, then hey, I know what you want or here's what I need from you.
Are you still in that kind of phase right now? Yeah, it's still an assessment. I'm learning as
much as I can learn. I'm trying to challenge certain groups or certain people with what I believe
are things that we can do immediately, but that will have a long-term effect on.
for the department.
I think little things like, and our fans, they love through social media to be able to give me some
great thoughts and advice about what we need to do for the Coogs and things like merchandising.
I think they saw it last game.
We started opening up the store and providing more access to more apparel.
This week, they'll see even more of that.
So the more that I can hear that are opportunities for our fans,
to not just help build our brand, but help build this department the right way.
And if it also helps generate new revenue for the department, it's truly a win-win.
So we're trying to do a lot in a short amount of time because the reality is, if I was here a year ago,
I would have told you we would be in a much better place.
But for being here for two months, we've done some great things, and we've still got a long way ahead.
And one of the things apparel wise you guys can take advantage of, I've been telling the audience about
this week is the $30 special.
You've got Cougar, a black t-shirt, and a ticket for the University of Houston
versus Kansas State.
That'll be at 2.30, and if you want to get those tickets, you can go to UHcougars.com
slash black.
That's UHcougars.com slash black.
The game day experience, look, you were at LSU for a long time.
You were to Mexico running your own shop there.
And the thing I've noticed about talking to a lot of athletic directors over my career
is that there is literally, Eddie, no two jobs that are just,
alike. So are you having to kind of go back in the memory banks about what works at LSU,
what worked at New Mexico, what could work in Houston, and how do you kind of balance all that to say,
well, it worked in Bat Rouge, it didn't work in Aberkirky, it can work in Houston. How do you balance
all that? It's taking all those experiences and trying to try them out. Something as simple
as we know we're trying to really ramp up tailgating here. The Texans do it.
great job with tailgating at their football game.
Of course, places that I've been from
LSU and Florida, they all
do great jobs. The SEC as a whole
has been known
for that. And, you know, we
are in Texas where
tailgating, where we're getting together
with friends to do something outside,
especially at an athletic contest,
is something that's been around for a long time.
We need to go back and start
finding ways to create that culture
again, to invite
our supporters to come out,
enjoy it with traffic and all the other nuances that at times people say Houston
makes it difficult to attend games.
The reality is come early.
Come enjoy yourself.
There's with the new sports, the new gift shop and other things that we're opening up
that are going to be available early, the tailgating, the ability to walk around,
see things through our marketing and our game day experience, that's what we have to do.
We have to create a better atmosphere.
We have to get people here early.
We have to let them enjoy the.
themselves truly. So I'm going around as much I can listening to our fans that are tailgating,
trying to listen and find ways to continue to make it better. But all those experiences that I've
had at other places are going to help us understand what's possible. And maybe things that work
there might not work here and vice versa. So we're going to continue to tweak things and
try to put the best foot forward. The football program is in transition, obviously, with Willie.
impressed with what he's been able to do just in the short time on the job.
And I thought last week's win against Utah was very gritty.
This is a team that was expected the youths were to contend for the Big 12,
and I think their Cougars added some misery.
And this week would be a real fun-up opportunity.
I know you are trying to spread the message to get as many folks in for that Kansas State game
because that Walcat team is very, very talented.
Yeah, the one thing that I hope our fans are proud of is our guys keep competing.
At times, maybe we don't have everything running the way perfectly that we needed to run.
And I think coach in his lesson first year, I mean, it's his first year,
but of course he has only been here for about six months or so,
allowing him to really build the culture, build the program the way that he has done everywhere else.
It's no different than what we've seen with the basketball program and doing it the right way.
He's going to build this.
but the one thing that's evident is the guys are going to fight.
They're going to keep fighting.
They're going to keep fighting.
And we can't hurt ourselves out there.
And when we do, that's what it really impressed me about last week's game.
We had some opportunities we didn't take advantage of.
They could have just said, forget it, and just tanked it, and they kept fighting.
And they found ways.
And so to be able to get Kansas State here, the blackout game, to be able to a 2.30 game on Fox,
it's going to be a great opportunity to showcase what we are and what we can be.
And again, another chance for us to compete in this league for a win.
And so I'm encouraging our fans, our students, everybody come out.
We need you now more than ever.
Help us continue to build this program the right way that they're going to be proud of.
Our kids need your support now.
And so it's going to be a fun weekend.
We got basketball starting back up next week, women's basketball as well.
So everything is happening right now.
and hopefully our fans can come out this Saturday
and start that process even further.
Eddie, before I let you run,
and you don't work a 40-hour week,
I don't think anybody's doing that anytime soon on the campus
or for that matter many jobs in life.
But if you were to take a 40-hour week of yours,
how much are you spending on NIL?
The dynamic constantly changes,
the constant need for additional funds,
the legislation, the talk among administration,
the talk among the kids. Where does that in terms of your daily to-do list? Where is that focused
right now? It's in my daily to-do list. Some days it's a little higher than others. I would tell you,
though, NIL is as important today as ever. You know, when you look at what's going to help us
build these rosters, but more than anything else, retain our rosters with the good kids,
the ones that want to represent this program, that's what's going to be most important.
So NIL right now is part of my daily conversation, our daily approach on how we look at things, working with Licking Coogs, working with others who help really elevate this area.
Don't get me wrong.
You know, you said it very, very well.
And there's so many things happening.
Revenue sharing, you know, understanding the culture, getting, getting to know my department.
But really on the top of this is how do we put Houston Cougars to be successful?
successful and sustained success.
And NIL and RESTRO are going to be critical.
So our fans right now understand, I know this is different.
I know it's not what they're accustomed to.
But now that above and beyond money that they've always done for Houston,
for the athletics here, we need them to continue to do what they can
because that's going to be a big, big part of what we're trying to do
and how we try to succeed in the Big 12th.
Last day, I'm going to ask you to get your crystal ball out.
Do you think we're going to get any sort of regulation in the next 12 months, 36, 5 years,
and who's going to be in charge of that, you think, ultimately?
Because it sounds like to me, Eddie, the NCAA wants no part of it.
I don't know if anybody wants a part of it.
Everybody knows there has to be something done.
And the problem with that is it's going to have to be done at the highest level,
and that's legislature and federal.
and to be able to so it can have across all the states
and have something that binds us or gives us the ability
to work within the rules or whatever those rules may look like.
You ask the good question there.
Who's going to manage this?
I couldn't tell you because there's so many different parts.
People throwing out everything from should football be its own standing
or should college sports or all continue as NNTWA.
The fact is right now our coaches, everybody's looking for just direction.
and we're working to give options, but until there's a federal legislators get in the room and sit down and actually finalize it and help us get to where.
And there's people that want to work on this.
We're going to continue to struggle to get to the finish line.
I really believe it.
Great conversation as always, Eddie.
Thank you for the visit, and we'll see you on Saturday.
I don't know what the weather is like back home today, but hopefully we'll have a bright suns sunny day for a 2.30 kickoff.
I'm going to follow your lead and say, it's going to be, we're going to make it happen.
All right, very good.
Thanks, Eddie, for the time.
We really appreciate it.
We'll see you.
That's Eddie Nunez, Vice President, Intercollegiate Athletics, Athletic Director at the University of Houston.

The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 790.
Rossi, I think this is a top three goat OG Halloween song, fair to say.
I would say that's fair.
I thought you've had it at number one for years.
I have, but I wanted to make sure I was so...
Okay, you soft pedal a little, Matt.
No, soft pedal.
Say it with your chest, baby.
The best of all time!
If I want to maintain this drip, I got to make sure I get some fresh songs in.
What drip is that? Your nasal drip?
You did that yesterday.
It was a bad joke then. It was a bad joke now.
But I didn't mention you just did it there.
No, this is the all-time greatest song.
Thriller's got to be there.
I go Thriller 1.
I'll go Monster Smash 1, Thriller 2, Ghostbusters 3.
That's fine.
I'm sticking with Thriller.
The greatest of all time.
All right.
Ross, there are some.
things, mostly things about social media
and the platform X slash Twitter is
dangerous and ridiculous, right?
What's dangerous?
Twitter. I mean, in general, yeah.
Yeah. But there are some interesting
websites that I found
inquisitive. What do you mean inquisitive?
You found, well, well,
not about Taylor. We'll
get to her selections in a minute. We don't need to get
to her. How did she do? I think she had
Garrett Cole over on Alts, right? He got a bunch
of them. Taylor does, and I'm glad you
asked, since you asked, what's
brought it up. Yeah, but you're
asking, so, I mean, the least I can do is
tell the audience here. Okay.
Taylor tonight has
Joe Mixon scoring a touchdown.
Okay. What is that? Even money? You've got
to lay cash on that?
She doesn't put the... She's
such a fraudster. She doesn't
even put the odds of it.
Taylor Cochland, over two and a half
receptions. Cool.
What's her reasoning on that, Matt?
Let me finish. Will Anderson, Jr. to record a
And on a separate tech, a separate tweet, she says $100 to whomever can guess my Halloween costume, I truly don't think anyone will get it.
Hmm.
A big of security and exchange commission investigator, yes.
She also has Dalton Schultz's longest reception over 16 and a half yards.
Dalton Schultz, oh, yeah, it could happen.
Okay, well then give her the credit then.
I'm not giving her any credit.
It's minus 155 anytime TD.
Let me ask you this.
Is she going to go as naughty something?
I don't know.
I don't care, Matt.
Okay.
Hey, what is your...
I mean, I guess I know there's two things you're fixated on.
All right, back at it.
Back to what I was originally going to.
There is a website...
There is a Twitter account called NFL RefStats 1.
I don't know if it's a legitimate.
Let me send me a followers today.
NFL Ref Stats 1.
That sounds made up.
It's not good.
great. It's verified. Yeah, that doesn't mean anything.
Porn bots are verified.
Sean Hockley is the referee for tonight's game.
Okay. That, of course, is Ed Gunn's
Hockley's son.
This is NFL ref stats.
69% of their penalties
are called on the offense.
Okay. And of those,
53% of those penalties
are called on two different things.
Fall starts
and offensive holdings.
Larry Tunsell
Those are two favorite things.
We are screwed.
If he doesn't start falsely, they can't call it.
They're also number two in illegal formation
and roughinging the passer.
Roughing the passer, well, it could be good
because C.J. Straught could get hit a lot.
The last Sean Hockley game, he called for the Texans.
Week three, Texans at Vikings.
Minnesota 1.34 to 6.
Well, I have some great news.
If the Texas don't commit penalties, they won't be called.
There were five false starts in that Minnesota game, two illegal formations, and a rough in the passer.
Well, how deserved were they?
We need to contextualize this.
Stats without context are just useless.
By the way, Texans and Sean Hockley games are one and four.
So there you have it.
Whatever.
I don't care about that.
Just mute that account.
All right.
You didn't like any of that stuff.
I didn't think it was bad.
I don't think it was being...
I mean, it's fine, but like I said, it doesn't have any context.
If you show me video of all the roughing the passers and they were all deserved, and who cares?
They can call nine in one game and one in the next and just be...
It doesn't matter if they were deserved, if they were the right calls.
Maybe this NFL refs one guy is an attorney or a doctor and he's got a full patient list and he doesn't have time for this.
Clearly he does.
you just put those stats together that you mentioned,
but you need to contextualize them.
Are they bad calls or are they the right calls?
I'm going to go to NFL.
Rets one contextualized and see if it gets some results.
Well, I'm going to guess all the roughing crews
that were calling Laramie Metsal games in the first three weeks
called a lot of false starts.
So it doesn't mean they're going to call a lot in their next game.
This means Laring Tunsel's not there.
Well, I think you're just taking it at face value.
What part of information you always tell me?
What part of metrics hurt you here?
It didn't hurt me.
I'm just asking.
Yeah, you feel like.
have been hurt. We're to touch you. Let's go
to Dave in Spring at 225
on 790. Hi, Dave.
Hey, guys.
I enjoyed the interview with
AD there, Nunez. Seems like a good guy
and everything, but I'm going to tell you, when
you asked him the question about, you know,
how does the mess that is
college athletics, you know, with NIL
and portal and the whole Wild Wild West
system they have right now,
how does it get sorted out? And he says,
oh, it's going to take legislation. It's going to
take federal legislation.
And I'm thinking of myself, I don't know if he's looked up there in D.C.,
but this is not a group that is particularly good at coming up with solutions to complicated problems.
And I just, I mean, can't these guys figure it out themselves, the presidents, the chancellors, the A.Ds, get together and figure out, put some rules in place.
Why would they want to hand that off to the federal officials?
It should be something that they do.
You know why?
And I'm a why?
Well, I mean, here's my, I think, semi-educated answer.
Because you have 150 football programs and 300-something schools that all have different agendas.
Why?
Do you think the universe, do you think Alabama has any interest in making sure that NIL is fair and balanced for UTAP or for Boise State or for Villanova?
No.
No, you have different agendas for the power conference schools and the power programs.
than you would for the little schools that are just trying to compete.
So that's the reason why I think athletic directors and conference officials
believe that ultimately it's going to have to take some control by the government
because nobody's going to be on the same page on this.
NFL owners, there are 32 of them, all have the same agenda, generally speaking.
NBA owners, baseball the same way.
You've got the habs and the have-nots that are so abundant throughout college sports.
How are they all supposed to agree on this on a central thing?
Well, Matt, you think Chuck Schumer and Ted Cruz are going to be able to figure this out?
I don't trust governments.
You're asking the wrong person.
I'm just telling you that if you're expecting that the athletic director and the commissioner of the SEC
gives two craps about how the Big Sky Conference compensates their players, you're nuts because they're just they just don't.
Well, one last comment on this.
I mean, when the NC2A hired Charlie Baker to be the head, I think he's still.
still in that job, right? He is. He was a
former, he was a governor of Massachusetts, and
I'll tell you, my mother lived up there, I spent
time up there, he was very well respected.
He's considered a smart guy, he works
across the aisle, all of that.
I'm disappointed that Charlie Baker has,
maybe it's an indication that nothing is
ever going to be able to get worked out, but
I thought he would, by now, have started
to make some inroads here. Are you
disappointed that not enough is happening
with the NC2A, or is the NC2A,
or is the NC2A just,
you know, you know,
pointless at this point? I'll just hang up to
Thank you, Dave.
And you've brought up the good point.
The NCAA is completely pointless.
Rossi, we've talked about this for months now.
The NCAA has made it abundantly clear.
They have zero interest in helping this situation.
They want their hands free of this completely.
And why is that?
Because they want to maintain their amateur status.
Correct.
They want to maintain their amateur status,
which means they do not have to pay taxes.
Last year, they got, according to this ESP,
article I just pulled up over a billion dollars in revenues last year with half of that being
distributed to the schools and God knows what happens to the other half.
I don't even know.
Excuse me, $1.3 billion in revenue for 2022, 2020, 2023 season.
945 million of that coming from media rights and marketing deals tied to championship events.
And remember, it's not the schools directly paying the players.
it's Eddie Nunez and other athletic directors saying,
who do we have out there that we can ship to our collective
and then the collective can deal directly with the athletes.
So that's $1.3 billion in revenue tax-free, correct?
Do I have that right?
Yes.
They want to keep it that way.
And the NCAA wants no part of it.
Real quick before we get to the Rotten 5, Anthony and Deer Park at 229.
Hi, Anthony.
Hey, guys.
Hey, Ross, first of all, I could,
I couldn't comment yesterday because I was in Twitter jail, but I could not agree more.
The political ads are exhausting on X, and I can't wait for Tuesday to be done.
Yes.
You can't get here fast enough.
So, and I was in an ex jail for calling a Yankee fan a bitch, so it was for a good cause.
Oh, I don't hear that.
But, so the Texans need somebody to step up tonight.
in their wide receiver room.
And I kind of got a gut feeling on that
that it's going to be Texan's legend,
Xavier Hutchinson.
I think he's going to go for at least eight catches
for at least 100 yards.
Whoa.
Whoa.
And a touchdown grab.
Whoa.
Look, here's my thing.
Look, here's my thing.
Hear me out.
Last year, C.J. Shraub showed us the ability
to elevate any group of wide receivers.
And I think that if he's got any sort of protection,
He's done it all season.
He's been under pressure, and he's bailed this offense out all season long.
So I think that CJ has the ability to elevate any group of receivers that he's playing with.
Now, granted, losing our main guys hurts, but I do think that Xavier Hutchinson will step up and have a big game for the Texans.
All right.
You have to call, Anthony, you have to call Ross tomorrow for sure on that.
Oh, you're out tomorrow.
forget.
Yes.
And the reason why I'm out tomorrow,
it's because my son's getting his ring dunk
a ceremony at A&M, so
I can't miss that.
Ring dunk ceremony is not officially
sanctioned. You can do that whenever you want.
When's he doing it? Tomorrow.
Oh, he can't wait until Saturday?
No.
He has a specific time
and day to pick it up and do all the dunking,
and he's getting pictures done at Kyle Field.
Rossi, it's a big deal.
Say, don't you
cackle back there?
I didn't do anything.
You cackled.
They can't zoom you in.
Aggie fans call Ross tomorrow and tell them how big of a day it is tomorrow.
I know it's a big deal.
All right.
Geez.
For drunken degenerates to dunk their ring and a pitcher of beer.
Cool.
If you think I can miss tomorrow, then I'm going to be sleeping with you at your house for a long period of time.
No, you will not.
Okay.
Well, that's why you're going to let me go tomorrow.
No, that's fine.
No, you can go.
I'm going.

Hey, Google, Play Sports Talk 790 on IHartRadio.
You know what this song needs, Ross?
I know what you're going to say.
Don't say it then.
Everybody knows what it needs.
I don't know.
I don't think Connor was born when this skit aired.
Connor
What does his song mean more of?
More cowbell.
Thank you.
He's being raised right, Rossi.
That's good.
I think it was around 98-99.
I would have to say one of the ten funniest skits
maybe of all time on SNL.
That's one of my faves.
You can find the best of Will Ferrell.
I think it's on Peacock.
It's on the what?
Peacock.
It's an app run by NBC.
Who of course owns S&L.
Okay.
April 8th, 2000.
Could we have like a fantasy 10 of the best skits of all time?
I thought we did that.
No, we did recurring characters.
S&L recurring characters maybe?
Yeah.
What did we?
We did something like that.
Have we done a fantasy five this year?
I know.
It's been too long.
I don't wait.
Well, Connor,
if you run a fantasy five,
you've been here a year now.
Yeah,
you guys did walk-up songs.
Oh,
that's right.
And I lost.
That's the only one you did, yeah.
We can do best header props, fantasy five.
What, best Taylor L's?
Best Taylor crypto scams?
Ladies and gentlemen, it takes absolutely no ability whatsoever to give you the five best teams in the NFL.
We asked somebody that's down.
In the dirt.
A loser.
Guy that has done no success in his life.
Oh, I'm just kidding.
It's time for Ross's right in five.
They've gone bad if they draw flies.
Ooh, it's Ross's Rotten Five.
This don't smell quite right.
All right.
Let's get to it on the Rotten Five.
There was a team that people were clamoring for last week.
They appear later on this list.
But let's start with number five.
Last week, they were number one.
But holy smokes, who would have thought?
You get rid of one of the worst quarterbacks in the league,
although via injury, the team gets better.
The Cleveland Browns going down with the sinking ship that was Deshawn Watson,
but the football gods had other plans.
Watson's season ending injury opening the window for the return of the James Winston experience.
And well, one weekend, the result's pretty good.
The Brown's got a clutch touchdown and a clutch stop to take down one of the best teams in the NFL in the Baltimore Ravens.
So things trending upward for the Browns, congratulations to you.
You climbed out of the number one.
spot, but you're still bad, and we're still going to put you at number five as the fifth
worst team in the NFL.
You are a factory of sadness.
Let's keep it moving to number four.
Congratulations to the New York, excuse me, New England, Patriots, you won a game.
You also made NFL history along the way.
You could say they didn't deserve it because in NFL history, teams were zero and seven
50 when allowing 20 or more points, not forcing a turnover and gaining under 250 yards.
somehow the Patriots made that happen and got the win.
Well, that somehow is the New York Jets who were almost on this list.
Patriots pulled off that unprecedented miracle to win their second game of the year,
but they looked bad doing it.
Maybe the future can be bright, but they're still pretty bad.
As of right now, the Patriots, the fourth worst team in the NFL.
I'm the coach. I do what's best for the football team.
I don't know why we can't understand that.
No, you're not the coach, Bill.
You're out.
You're not coaching them anymore.
All right.
Las Vegas Raiders, yes, they're on the list.
They started out the season.
Good enough, splitting their first four games.
That's why they haven't appeared here,
including a win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Since then, things have been horrible.
They bench Gardermanchu.
Aiden O'Connell came in, got hurt.
They went back to Gardner Manchu,
all while losing four in a row along the way.
Raiders, 26th in the league in points per game.
27th in points allowed per game.
Good offenses in the Bengals and Dolphes.
offense next up in the next couple of weeks.
So I think they're going to lose some more games, things getting worse, before they get better.
For the Raiders, the third worst team in the NFL.
All right, thanks.
Boom.
All right, Titans, my God, you're terrible.
Setting records this year and none of them are good.
This past week, they lost the Lions 52 to 14.
They became the first team in NFL history to allow 50 points to the other team,
while the other team threw for under 100 yards.
How do you even do that?
Well, you turn the ball over and over and over and over again in your own territory,
and that's going to happen.
They greatly outgained the Lions, but lost by almost 40 points.
Mason Rudolph, Will Levis, doesn't matter.
The Titans are terrible.
They're a mess.
They've lost six of their seven games this year.
Do have a winnable one coming up against the New England Patriots.
That will shift the rotten five for next week.
But right now, absolute worst, a second worst team in the NFL, the Tennessee Titans.
we got to go get Vince Young.
He's retired, buddy.
All right.
Let's welcome back to the starting lineup, Bryce Young.
And welcome back to the number one spot, the Carolina Panthers.
Panthers, making the right move, inserting their young, yes, pun intended, quarterback into the starting lineup.
But again, it doesn't matter they're going to have one of the worst defenses in the history of the league.
Things are so bad, they gave up 28 points to the Broncos.
And that's a good thing.
That's a few as they'd give it up in five weeks.
Off, excuse me, offense is bad.
Defense is terrible.
They're already waving the white flag.
They traded away Deontay Johnson.
Their hopeful star running back, Jonathan Brooks, has been practicing this week.
But Dave Canales, the head coach, saying, we might even play in this year.
I mean, what is the point?
The season is a complete wash.
The Carolina Panthers, the absolute worst team in the NFL.
I've seen teams suck before, but they would have suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.
And there's your rut in five.
I need a ruling, Ross.
you're going to be missing
on November the 21st.
Yes.
You're going to be long, far away from us.
Yes, I'm not going to be calling in.
I might try to call in at some point.
I don't know what the cell service is over there in Taiwan slash Korea.
You know what?
I don't want you to do that because you're going to want to be being charged
and you're going to ask the company for money and they're not going to give it to you.
It's going to be a whole mess, yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
We've got to figure out who's going to do the Rotten 5.
Is it going to be a Dan thing or what?
Connor McGovern?
Adam Clinton?
You got candidates.
Connor, you want.
You know what? Put it down, Connor.
November 21st.
You're doing the rotten five.
Okay.
I can do that.
Okay.
And also the 28th.
Oh, no, we're going to be off, huh?
No, we're going to be off, huh?
No, we're going to.
I can do it one day.
Yeah, you got it.
It's easy.
And then we'll, and then, are you still gone on the following week?
No, you're back the following week.
God, look, all this vacation.
I'm good.
This is good.
I'm glad you're good to go on like this.
I don't get to do these international trips, but this will be good for you.
Yes, thank you.
Should be the trip of a lifetime.
I'm looking for you.
You're going to bring us some souvenirs back, both of us?
What do you want?
Where are you going again?
I'm going to Seoul Korea, Busan Korea, and then Taiwan.
Okay, well, just find me a shirt or something.
Okay.
Collared shirt probably.
Collared?
I'll get you a t-shirt.
All right, that's fine.
Let's, believe it or not today, go ahead and say it, loud and proud, Ross.
What is it?
And Connor, what are we playing for?
It's the Los Angeles Dodgers.
I'll say it.
We've got some tickets to go see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra,
and we also got a six-pack of tickets to see U of H versus Kansas State.
Oh, baby, 230! You've got to be there.

One small broadcasting notes, sports RV.
Bob Kastis says he will no longer call baseball games.
He's done.
Ding Dong, the Witch is dead.
Really excellent game caller, 70s, 80s, 2000s.
He started a slip in the last decade.
and I thought he was atrocious for the Yankees and Royal Series.
And so did America.
He's always been a pompous ass.
There's no question about that.
It doesn't mean he's talented.
Doesn't mean he's great.
But he's just been a truly unlikable figure.
And now he got...
He probably was told he's not coming back,
and they just said, hey, wanted you announce you're retiring from game.
So they're going to work for MLB Network,
but he's not going to do any playoff games.
So there you have it.
Anything else you want to get off your chest?
I'm good.
I'm sending questions.
I was going to say, you got quite all of a sudden.
Let's see real quick here.
Final score for tonight's game.
19 to 16 Jets.
20 to 17 Jets, which is basically what you're saying.
Connor, what do you got on a final score?
2317 Texans.
Okay.
So two of the three of us have the Jets winning two nights game.
Five minutes left to go on the show.
