Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
10.5.
Good morning, Houston.
And welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
This is Sports Talk 790.
We're not going to get it all at one chunk here.
So just one at a time.
We'll do that.
We'll play this out until we get two minutes up in the fourth quarter before we turn on.
But we'll do it.
He said it.
They had to get takeaways, and they do right out of the gate.
First and goal, Detroit, trying to get back in.
The end zone.
Touchdown Detroit.
It's ground.
Jimmy Butler's like, do not give the city of Houston any run.
You are all Tomball.
Jake freaking Bates.
U.F.L's Jake Bates.
Salesman, Jake Bates.
And Detroit Lions clutch kicker, Jake Bates.
Meanwhile, Kami Fairbairns kick went from northeast to southwest and about a 14-mile-hour breeze.
That's why you have to close the roof.
Sometimes you hook it, Matt.
It happens.
That's a hook.
Let's go.
This is why I'm on a Texans fan.
I don't want this.
I mean, I can discuss it, but I don't have the emotional tie.
It should fall in line with most of what you're used to.
in sports. Yeah, I mean, seriously, I've been given in my life, Fyslamma, JAMA. Yes. I've been given
the Oilers Buffalo game. Yes. I was given Damien Lillard shot against the Rockets.
Absolutely. Um, 2019 Astros. Yeah, I mean, oh, yeah, 017, the cheating scandal. I mean,
23 Astros. We got a long history, baby. Yeah, I mean, I don't need it. And it wasn't necessarily
a full chapter last night, but it was at least a few pages. You get up 23 to 7. Yeah.
You get five interceptions.
Four, really.
I don't count that interception at half time.
I can even say three.
Oh, on those.
You ended up on the one yard line.
They put Lasseter down at the one yard line.
I mean, most teams aren't going to go 99 yards and score a touchdown off of that.
So you went three and out after being pinned at the one yard line.
Yeah.
That also wasn't the gift that the final line of turnover battle tells.
No, but Jared golf was terrible yesterday.
But still at the end of the day.
let's say we take both of those away.
That's still three turnovers from Jared Goff,
and he had thrown four all year long.
You had so many opportunities to capitalize,
so many opportunities to go all in,
not be so conservative,
and that's becoming my biggest frustration with D'Amico Ryans
in this regime on Sundays
is that they don't go for the gusto,
and they didn't do it.
You have the lions in your building,
you have them on the ropes,
and you let them off the hook.
Yeah.
The reality is this.
Everybody's going to start wearing this, okay?
Everybody's in their fields today because they're trying to say, well, who takes the blame?
Bobby Slois got to get fired.
C.J. Stroud, it's not your fault.
D'Amico Ryans, your defense did a good job.
Everybody that is associated with the Texans that was on the field yesterday has to wear it.
Bobby Sloick, and I'm sorry, C.J. Stroud, Truthers, your quarterback wasn't good yesterday.
There were moments that he was great, but the silly interceptions in the second half, the inability to move the team.
And the fact is, your offensive line was okay.
He still got sack four times, but the run game was non-existent.
Joe Mixon could not find any holes.
It was terrible.
Embarrassing.
But that's, I mean, we're kind of, when Houston teams lose, they just don't want to go down 20.
1117 and a tough loss.
It was, you know, let's watch
Jared Golf turn the ball over
over and over and over and over and over again.
It's bad. It was a bad loss.
And that's why this team's going to be out probably in the first round of the playoffs.
So why don't you...
I'm still feeling second round. Let's go second round.
Okay. You know what? You can be Denver.
I mean, hell, Pittsburgh is playing.
Unbelievable.
Really big win yesterday.
I told you about the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I ain't sleep on the Steelers anymore.
I told you not to sleep on him.
And Russell Wilson's good.
I know.
I told you.
I mean, I don't know what happened, but they're good.
They're first in the AOC North again.
All right, so let's get after it.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
If you want to place blame on different people, good.
Just make sure you're balanced with it.
Because it goes all the way around.
This team is nothing close to what they were in the first half
they were in the second half.
And I don't want to hear about Nico Collins not being able to play
or Will Anderson.
You had 23 first half points.
You were kicking the dog crap out of the lions in the first half.
So don't give me the, well, the guys were gone bit.
Because you were doing just fine.
By the way, shout out to John Metchie.
Long forgotten as a wide receiver.
Best game is an NFL player hands down.
C.J. Strauss' quarterback rating, 63.
Whatever it was. Not good.
64.2.
Oh, excuse me.
I was off by and point.
I'm sorry.
I'm bad on that.
QBR 33.
by the way, that's on a scale of 1 to 100,
a 0 to 100.
Yeah, but that ESPN made that up, so I don't
count that. And they made it up, but still, okay,
if your, if your QBR is 33,
did you think you had a great game?
No, probably not.
But if the scales 1 to 35, it's fantastic.
Well, Jared Goss was 29.
But that's the thing.
You had the, arguably
the best team in the football on the ropes,
and you just, you couldn't get it done.
You score zero points in the second half.
How disheartening is this team,
I mean, literally Jekyll and Hyde in the first
and second half of games.
And here's the first and,
Here's the thing for Darlene that, you know, she's running around wearing her bling last night.
Okay.
You got Dallas coming up.
You're going to beat them.
I think so.
You've got two Tennessees coming up.
You're going to beat them.
I think so.
You're going to beat Miami.
That's one, two, three, four wins right there.
You got another Jacksonville.
And what the hell was that yesterday?
12-7.
Ooh, yeah.
So that's five more wins.
They're going to get the ball back and then Trouin Walker loses his mind and gets a penalty.
So they could have won that game.
It's the Vikings.
You're going to go five and two the rest of the way.
Probably.
Okay.
And that's going to put you at a little.
11 and 6.
Kind of what you thought they were going to be.
That was my preseason prediction.
It's good.
If you hit it, you hit it.
We'll see.
11 and 6.
You're going to host a first round playoff game
against probably either Denver, the Chargers, or Pittsburgh.
You could lose to any of those teams.
Easily.
You win that game.
I mean, it seems decent at home, usually.
And then you're going to lose in a second round of the playoffs.
All those teams have a positive point differential.
You have a negative.
The calendar is set.
Okay.
Because this team is showing a pattern.
And by the way, enough with the team meetings,
enough with throwing up the H's, enough with bragging about your uniforms,
score some points in the second half of football games.
It ain't much.
Put your ages down and put your points up.
Is that what you're saying, Matt?
Ages down, points up.
I like that.
Burgers down, field goals down, long touchdown plays up.
That'd be nice.
713, 212, 579.
If you want to get in, let's go.
I want to hear y'all.
Let's let you spot off.
Take as much time as you want.
We're here until 2 o'clock today.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross at 713-212-5-790.
I was watching the game last night, and I wanted to make the game a little bit more spicy.
So you know what I did?
I downloaded the Draft King's Pick Six app.
Unfortunately, I didn't win my pick-six.
That's because I did have C.J. Stroud on the under.
I did have Tank Dell on the under, but unfortunately, I had Dalton Schultz on the under, and he hit over.
But if you're looking to make it a little more interesting, if you want to have some fun,
If you really want to add to your viewing experience, get DraftKings Pick Six app.
It's super simple to get started.
You select two or more players.
Choose if they'll have more or less of a stat, whether it be yards.
And the NBA, of course, is happening.
Draft King's an official partner of the NBA, points, rebounds, three-pointers, anything like that.
I'm probably going to be playing some Rockets and Wizards tonight, just between you and me.
So you want to do that.
You can do that with the Draft Kings Pick Six app for first-time players.

More, Matt Thomas.
Now.
On Sports Talk 790.
They get gas.
I just think, you know, they got some runs on us.
when we didn't set the edge, we weren't triggering fast enough at the second level.
We just kind of, we stalled a little bit there defensively.
I think it was nothing, you know, about being tired or anything.
It's just us consistently executed.
And that's what, you know, I believe in, just out-executing our opponent.
And, you know, when things got tight there at the end and the second half,
just like we didn't execute.
We had multiple opportunities, right, to get off the field,
but we didn't make those plays.
But you know,
Domingo does give us a good
rundown of the game we just watched.
So, I mean, he's not seeing two different games.
I mean, I know the latest edition of how can you lose that game,
you lost that game.
First, we could also, we also do need to say,
the Lions are really good.
The Lions are the best team in the NFC.
If anybody can withstand five turnovers and win a game,
it'd be the best team of the NFC.
I expected the Texans to lose that game.
You expected them to lose by double digits.
We thought maybe they were going to get their doors completely blown off.
And they didn't do that.
Especially when Nico was declared unavailable for the game.
When Nico Collins was out, I just was like, how are they going to score any points?
And that really did come to fruition.
I mean, they scored their first touchdown on a short field.
Then after that, they really only had one sustained touchdown drive.
And that was at the end of the first half when that was when, I mean, C.J. Stroud looked like a freaking my
Stroud out there when they got that second
touchdown to go up 23
to 7 and that was
after the lions got the ball with
under two minutes to go and they were
just basically running it out. I was like, oh my
gosh, the Texans got them shook. They're trying to
get out of here and then they went down
CJ Stroud made a couple of great
throws on that
drive including that touchdown
throw to John Mechie. That's special.
That's a special
throw. And I'm sitting there saying
they're going to freaking win this game.
CJ Stroud is locking in.
The O-line is playing good enough.
Jared Gough is off tonight.
They are going to win this game,
and then they did not score another point.
And haven't scored a second-half point
or touchdown since the New England game.
Yes, against the New England Patriots
who are not good.
Who, by the way, beat the Bears yesterday.
That's true.
Chicago's imploding right now.
That's their issues.
unbelievable there Matt
Caleb Williams just can't get it done
I'm going to Chicago this weekend as a matter of fact
You are? No, that's what you're going to be hearing
And the bears said I ain't going to know a soldier field
First of all that stadium doesn't look like the soldier fields
That I looked at when I was a kid going up
And I got me a dog and a pearl there
I was not a pearl what's the old English
No no not an old deal I guess you could drink old either
Old style that's an old style beer there in Chicago
Chicago old style is not good but it's
It's Chicago
Yeah. It's like having a lone star in Texas.
Yeah. You drink it because you're from there.
Okay.
But here in Houston, we're upset. We got our own problems.
Yeah. But again, but it's 11. Get ready. It's 11 and 6.
Put it down. You win. If you thought this team was 11 and 6 before the season started, you're happy.
You got your 11 and 6.
I was hoping the expectations were that they were going to be pushing into the elite.
And that's just not happening at all.
I'm not seeing that at all.
And I'm seeing them, I'm seeing when they have the lions on the ropes,
they're playing for field goals, they're not being aggressive,
they're running the ball, they're slamming Joe Mixin into the center of the line for one-yard gains.
And I just, they're strip sacking their own quarterback.
They're not in 2024 NFL, just look on the flip on the other side,
Dan Campbell.
You know that he's going to roll the dice.
He's going to go for every fourth down.
They're going to be aggressive.
They're saying it's not necessarily even aggressive.
It's confident.
They're saying we're going to punch you in the mouth.
We're going to get this fourth and one.
We're going to get this fourth and two.
And you can't stop us.
And what you just described, they didn't do in the late second quarter.
Exactly.
I mean, it was like, I was watching some, I was watching the Texans running a drill.
One 16 left to go.
He'd two run plays?
I was stunned.
I was stunned.
I was like, Detroit, that's not you.
You have all these.
receivers, you've got two great running
backs, you've got golf who's had an
amazing season, and you're doing these
Mambi, Pambi, I mean, that was
gifting another chance for the
Texans to score before the half in which they've done that
a lot so far this year. I thought
all the stars were aligning. Detroit got
an Uber conservative late second quarter.
You took advantage, you had the mojo
and then you come out in the third quarter
and throw the interception, and obviously they get it right back.
They got it right back, but at the one-yard
line. It was a, it was a bad
throw there from C.J. Stroud.
The one to Tank Dell.
I mean, look, you get jumped.
The corner jumps you on an out route.
That happens.
It's bad.
It shouldn't.
But that's NFL football.
The other guys are talented.
They're good, too.
Yeah.
But, I mean, just completely lofting that ball to Tank Dell for that second interception.
While he is in, he looks like Jake Myers in center field.
Nobody's around there.
I think Chris Collins was like, oh, this is going to be a lot.
Uh-oh.
The whole stadium, you can hear it going, and then it's like, oh.
Oh, it was very deflating, very deflating that second interception.
And C.J. Stroud, after the game, I got to be better.
I got to make more plays, all that type of stuff.
And, by the way, it's okay to criticize C.J. Stroud.
Yeah.
Because guess who C.J. Straud should be criticizing himself.
And he is.
He's not waking up this morning going, man, if I had an offensive line or, man, if Bobby Sloat could call some more creative plays.
That same sort of activity in the first half came in.
I don't know. Maybe there is a mindset.
set in coaches, whether it's
offensive coordinator, whether it's the players, whether
it's the head coach, they just
can't put the foot on the throat
and finish teams off.
Unless it's the New England Patriots and Drake
May making his first start. That's it.
Yeah. That's it.
And I think
that is, if I have a
criticism of D'emico Ryan's his coaching style, I think
he does a great job Monday through
Saturday, great leader of
all that stuff, but a little bit too conservative.
Whether it's Bobby Sloick, under instructions, or Domingo Ryan, or as well, I don't care who it is.
I don't know who it is.
But it's just a little too conservative for my taste.
Maybe it's too much reliance on Kami Fairbairn.
And I'm not kidding.
Yeah.
I think they're like, you know what?
We're within 60.
Let's get Kami Fairbairn this kick.
And you know what?
Sometimes you're going to miss a 58-yarder.
It happens.
I'm not mad at Kymie Fairbairn.
No.
It would have been nice if he could have made a 58-yarder.
Right.
But you can't expect that.
That's too much.
Yeah.
But he's made so money this year that it's like, well, get him to the 40 and he's going to be golden.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
This is a Matt Thomas show with Ross.
We have to tell the truth today at 1130 while I will give you some of my sports takes,
one of which I will believe a couple of mine will not.
We've got the news at noon.
We've got believe it or not.
And we have what I believe to be in an aggravated fan base of the Texans.
And LSU, what the hell was?
that this weekend.
Absolutely an embarrassing
performance at home.
Oh, you're talking about their fans throwing stuff on the field?
Well, that's becoming
the new norm in sports.
You know what they say about Texas, Matt.
What starts here changes the world.
Clearly.
Start on an end.
And then we have an AD getting,
going on the podium,
Mike after a game and ripping the officials for a call.
Frankly, that was correct.
And then the Big 12 is like,
shut your bum ass up and get your checkbook.
We're going to find your ass.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
Join us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross here on Sports Talk 790.
We're not going to point fingers or, you know, one, I pointed myself and then two, you know, we've got to just move on from this and still understand.
We just took one of the best football teams, best NFL teams to, you know, the wire, but we really should have, you know, put them away after the first half.
So, you know, it's really on offense.
You got to be better.
I got to be better.
I mean, you cannot point fingers, but you probably could and should.
I mean, what's the end game?
Are we all just trying to be nice?
I mean, what was a team meeting for?
By the way, great job by John Alexander,
a legit member of the media going to find a story about the Texans.
Good for him.
Two are, again, team meetings typically don't work,
but at least it makes you feel.
better. Well, it got Joe Mixon voted captain
and it got them to within three points
of the Lions. Maybe if there wasn't
a team meeting, they would have lost by 25, Maddie.
Is that what it is? By the way,
and we kind of joke around
about Vegas. And my philosophy
about Vegas is
they're right some of the time, but
more times and not they're not right because, again,
you've got blowouts, you've got teams
that lose. Vegas is there
to inspire people to go bet on these
things. But sometimes, they
got some really good people that are creating lines and point spreads.
And sometimes they really, really nail them.
And last night, they absolutely nailed it.
Texans were a three and a half point dog.
They lost by three.
What was there over under?
Under the game.
49.5.
49, depending on where you looked.
And the final score total, the final total was 49.
So if you're in Vegas today, you are fist-pub because you've got a lot of action going
because people are like, man, they know what they're doing here.
The question is what side you bet on? That's the most important thing. I don't really care who's side.
No, they make good lines. They do pretty good.
Yeah. But that was weird. I was in Detroit on Saturday and bet on a lot of college football.
And ironically enough, my bad beats were by one point or less.
Happens. Yeah, it happens. That's why I probably shouldn't be betting on sports. Because it's aggravating.
But you didn't do any research, right? Normally, that's what I said. You're 80%.
My grandiose non-research research bet of the night was I had the over in the Maryland-Oregon game.
It was 57 and a half.
57 was the final number.
So I lost that.
And again, remember, if I would have taken the under, I would have won.
So it's depending on which side you're on.
But it was really bizarre how close that game got.
I took Florida State giving the nine to rice.
and I think Florida State won by 8
on Saturday in college basketball,
the double header downtown.
So what happened in the other game?
They called it off.
Are you sure?
They just said it's a no play.
Oh, okay.
I thought that was the coronation.
Auburn, they had flight issues.
I didn't have flight issues.
The team is fighting on the flight.
Yes.
It was going to be the Cougars cruising to victory.
I didn't catch the final score.
They lost.
Oh.
It's early season.
got a nice early season test. It doesn't matter.
As Franfichel of ESPN said, it was a final
four game in November. You don't get those very often.
Love that.
They can get back and regroup and
I mean, it's not like it's a league play loss.
No. The Cougars will be better for it
as they go along. And I'm guessing this week,
the Cougars have a complete puff cake of an opponent
so they'll get fat and happy off of them.
Yeah, that's good. All right. 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-1-2-7-90.
So let me ask you this, because I really don't know
the question because I've never been
on the other side of the curtain on an NFL team.
I mean, realistically,
the lowest of lowest hanging for it is,
when in doubt, blame the coaches,
blame the instructors.
You know, we have people that call us during baseball season
and say that you should fire the third base coach
when they mention it's a pitching coach
and vice versa.
How much do in your mind, Houston,
should really Bobby Sloke be wearing on this?
Does he all this,
let me ask you this,
and I'll give you one more preface.
and then I'll let you answer that.
Does he all of a sudden become this amazing play caller in the first half?
And then he takes the first four pages of that plague sheet and goes,
I already use that stuff.
I'm not going to do it again.
Where does the blame go?
Because I am of the belief nine times out of 10.
It's about the performers on the field as compared to the coaching.
Now, sometimes you can have some brain scratching moments.
You can have why do they call this in a situation knowing the clock and time and distance.
But, I mean, it's,
Is it just too easy to say Bobby Sloak's got to be replaced?
This is terrible. He doesn't know what he's doing?
I don't think if he gets here that everything is all of a sudden going to turn around or get to they get rid of him, that all of a sudden everything is going to turn around.
I think he's in a tough position because he tries to establish the run on first down.
And I think a lot of the people's biggest criticism of Bobby Sloick is that he runs the ball too much.
Well, number one, that could be coming from D'Amico Ryans because defensive.
coaches like to establish the run. Number two, that's the Shanahan tree philosophy and that is the,
and Bobby Slovak has a branch off of that tree. You establish the run, you go with the bootlegs
and the play action, and then you drive the ball down the field. That's just how it goes. That's
that coaching philosophy and that's, that's ingrained into Bobby Sloick. Number three, if we went
the other way, if Bobby Sloak didn't try to establish the run and he tried to chuck the ball 55 times.
It's very predictable offense then.
It's very predictable.
And then what will we say?
We would say, oh my God, C.J.
Stroud's under pressure every time he goes back there.
He's getting killed.
He's getting sacked.
Why are we throwing so much?
You've got to establish the run.
That's what we would be saying.
And then when he does throw on first down, how about out of the gates?
It's 23 to 7.
It's the third quarter.
And you, in the predictable old Bobby Sloick, you think that he's going to run on first down.
They throw on first down and C.J. Stroud throws a pick.
So it's like he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, in my opinion.
That's why I said it's very hard for me to do this because it's everybody's responsibility.
Is there a lack of killer instinct on this football team? Clearly.
Even in the Buffalo game they had to hold on for Daryl.
I mean, think of their losses and their wins this year.
How many have been by one score games?
How many of them have relied on Kimey Faber?
And how many of them relied on late game execution and because they've had these larger leads?
The killer instinct isn't there, but when you're up two scores, what was it?
No, it was scored halftime.
It's 23 to 7.
So 16.
So two scores.
I'm going to at the two-point conversions.
And you have an elite running back who's having a fantastic season.
Why wouldn't you try to get Joe Mixing involved, loosen it up, at least so your note become nearly as predict?
predictable of a team that just throws a ball
every single down. He
ran it 25 times.
He got 46 yards. I mean,
they tried to establish
the run. And
C.J. Stroud threw two bad picks.
And like I said, that was out of the gates
in the third quarter.
I think the whole world thought they would run
on first down there. They threw and it was a pick and
interception going the other way. It's just
everything went wrong.
We can blame, you know, fair
for the kicking. Like I said, I don't want to get too much
blame to him, but he missed the kick. Their guy
made his 58-yarder. Your guy missed
his 58-yarder. You could call that
the difference in the game. We also didn't talk
about that pass interference
that wasn't called at the end of the game.
And I'm not saying that's why. Well, I say you
add it all up. The CJ Shroud
turnovers, the conservative
game management,
the bad play calling,
the kicker
missing his kick, and then the bad
refereeing. You should add it all up?
But you know what, though, as you say that, and we're talking
about this in a big grandiose frame of mind here.
There's bad officiating.
Absolutely.
Ramping.
If you get a really well-officiated game, it's like going to a steakhouse and getting
the biggest cut of meat and paying for a smaller cut because you're just, you can't, you cannot
expect officials to help you out.
They're going to screw up calls.
They're screwing up calls in college football.
They're screwing up calls in pro football.
They're missing pass interferences.
Rossi.
They're missing face mask.
They're missing off sides.
officially officiating in the
2024 year for football maybe is
and talking about college and pro is probably at its
worse in a very long period of time which makes no sense
because the technology is better.
You are hiring younger officials.
You are trying your best to open it up
to recruit people to come do this.
The sports, the world of sports just can't,
the speed, the athleticism just can't handle
regular old human beings going mono
and mono with these guys.
I'm not blaming the referees necessarily.
But it's always a factor. It always is.
But it was a miscall.
But also, you can't necessarily expect to get that.
It's like the last 10 seconds of an NBA game.
Somebody's got to get hacked.
Somebody's got to get like suplexed for there to be a foul call.
And it's like that in those crucial moments in an NFL game.
And it was the right call was a pass interference.
But having that being a no call, if it was flipped on the other side,
it would have been like, hey, third and four, you got to make a point.
play. That wasn't, that was tickey
tack. So,
all right, so what do you mean,
we can't be totally surprised
at anybody, I shouldn't say
this is tough.
Friday, you and I,
we didn't think the Texans were going to win this football game.
No. So you and I
personally aren't shocked by this. But we also
didn't think that they were going to get gifted
four, we'll just call it four interceptions.
There you go. You won the turnover
battle by two, and you
had the opportunity to seize the moment.
And if the Lions came in there and Jemir Gibbs russed for 120 and two touchdowns and David Montgomery went for 110 in a touchdown and they beat you down physically, I would have been able to accept that.
But to get up the way that you did to have Jared Gough try to hand the game to you on a silver platter and for you to say, no, thanks, I'm good.
That's what's frustrating.
713-212-5-790.
Will a Dallas win next Monday night make you feel better?
Because you're going to get that.
I mean, the Cowboys were embarrassed yesterday.
Cooper Rush was awful.
Trey Lance was terrible.
I mean, the entire Cowboys team was pathetic.
And so you're going to catch them at a time where they're probably going to be firing their head coach in the not too distant future.
It's just that bad.
By the way, Doc Prescott likely out for the year after having his hamstring surgically repaired.
Off of his bone.
That must have been a serious pull.
That's not great.
And shout out to our good friend James Jones.
He was on some Fox show or something yelling about how Dak Prescott needed to be,
that back in there with his boys and he's
being soft for getting out of the game. Who is
James Jones? I guess it's, is it the
former wide receiver? He's somewhere on Fox
and I saw it on Twitter. He was like screaming like
Jack is being soft. He needs to be back there
with his boys like, okay, well, turns out
he's on IR and his hamstring was off his bones.
Shut up. All right. That might be something for Wednesday.
So where are you feeling? What are you feeling right now, Texans
fans? I mean, Ross and I'm
kind of just giving you our thoughts over the first
455 minutes of the show. What do you got? 713,
212-2-5-790.
7-13-212-2-5.
are these correctable mistakes
Ross we got a pattern growing here
we got a pattern growing of a team that doesn't know how to put the
throat of the foot on the throat of an opponent
is it the same old Texans
or can they turn this around I don't think so
thanks I mean I'm just being honest
I could lie
I can throw my h's up
and throw your hs up
713-212 5790 719719
212-7-90. 10-45, we take you till 2 o'clock today. It is a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross on Sports Talk 790.
More Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk 790.
1051. It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross. 7-1-3-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-90. Sports Talk 790 is your home for the Rockets,
the Astros. Rockets in action tonight.
We'll take on the Washington Wizards.
Houston coming off a win against
Detroit last yesterday, late afternoon
in Detroit. Houston coming off a
win against Detroit. I know.
One out of three ain't bad. We haven't said that whole lot
these days.
We'll take it.
By the way, I was told by my
engineer in Detroit yesterday that they
started the new chant in
Red Wings and Pistons games
that had happened during last year's
playoffs and the Lions. That out of nowhere,
where people would just start chanting Jared golf
at the Red Wings and Pistons games.
Okay.
It's kind of a bit.
They didn't do it yesterday.
Oh, were you disappointed?
Well, it was like, and she was like,
it's going to be coming sometime soon and it never came.
Maybe they got, they had a feeling he was going to throw five interceptions.
Yeah.
He was, he was absolutely terrible yesterday, and you let him leave town with a win.
And you let him off the hook.
And that super fast runner for the Detroit Lions.
Jemir Gibbs?
Yeah.
I mean, how many times did Torrico and Collinsworth say?
this guy can fly.
This guy's the fastest guy on the planet.
I mean, yeah, I get it, bro.
I know he's fast.
He was okay yesterday.
19 for 71.
That's lost than four yards of carry.
That's not great.
Not great.
That's okay.
Yeah.
The defense did a pretty good job overall.
Defense was significantly better than the offense.
It's crazy that you gave up 26 points and we're saying that.
But I mean, against this Lions team, they can drop 50.
They drop 50 on the Titans, although that was also turnover driven.
But, you know, yeah.
Yeah.
Yep.
You also didn't have Will Anderson.
You didn't have Will Anderson in the first half.
You were fine.
Let me tell you, you were throwing your anxious up.
You were loving on the uniforms.
You were looking for Cal.
You were looking for Hannah to give her a hug at halftime.
Oh, I'm sorry.
That's members of the fake media in Houston that was doing that.
I'm sorry.
I was talking about the fans.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Neal on the Matt Thomas show.
Ross, Neidel, the floor is yours.
Good morning.
Hey, how are you guys?
guys doing today.
Okay.
Well, I think, you know, if it would have been a close game from beginning to end,
that Texan fans would have a little bit more to be upset about on that missed
pass interference call.
But if you guys, I mean, it kind of balanced out.
If you guys remember the drive right before that that Detroit had, they were like
third and five or third and six.
And the Texan defensive tackle came in and kind of left his feet and he,
hit golf in the side of the head, and, you know, they didn't call late hit to the quarterback
or blow to the head, which would have given them a first down and put them right around
midfield.
So that's another drive that would have been going for Detroit as well.
So, I mean, the call's really kind of balanced out right there because both teams lost
a possession off of that deal.
The problem is you get five interceptions.
You should, by law of averages, at least luck into a field goal.
somewhere there. Just no points at all in the second half is just inexcusable.
Yeah, to me, and I, as a broadcaster, sometimes it's, it's hard to do this, but I'm not a big
officiated blammer. I'm just not, these things tend to equal out. I know some people don't
want to believe that, but they just do. There are as many calls that will go for your team as they
go against. The results are you didn't score anything in the second half. Your team just could
not move the football. Detroit's defense is good. And thank you for the
phone call, Nejo, good to hear from me. But you were able to do what you wanted to in the first half.
Hell, you got John Mechie involved. You got Dalton Schultz involved. Tank Dell was finding open seams.
C.J. Stroud had enough time to throw, although, again, Rossi, he felt, again, a lot of pressure yesterday.
Dids get sacked four times. But withstood that, it was able to put up a pretty, I mean, you had to have felt good the way you played the first 30.
I just don't think Dan Campbell's halftime adjustments all of a sudden change.
There was a philosophical, indirect change in how the Texans came out of that locker room.
It wasn't because all of a sudden, Detroit threw new schemes at you.
They just couldn't have.
No.
And I mean, second half adjustments are kind of an old trope.
Adjustments are happening literally after the first drive in NFL games these days.
They're like in the midst of the first run of drives.
coaches are adjusting at all times in the NFL.
So it's a bit of an oversimplication to say,
yeah,
the Texans just aren't adjusting properly at halftime.
You don't even have all that much time in a half time.
You have to get all the team together.
You have to go in there.
You're in there for like, I don't know, seven, eight minutes.
And then you've got to come out because you've got to get ready for the second half.
So at the end of the day, it's just the, to me,
I think part of it is the way that the Texans,
are conservative conservatively coached when they get leads,
they go to protect those leads at all costs.
It's like, it would be like an NBA team getting a 10 point lead in the third quarter,
and then they're running down the shot clock to one second every time.
It's just too, it's premature.
They don't put their foot on the gas.
They don't just go to try to score more points.
They have a 10 point lead in the third quarter.
They're like, okay, we're going to try to win by 10.
They don't try to win by 24.
That's just how they play to me in my mind that I just see it too often.
And I'm watching the Titus Howard stripping the ball by his own, by Howard.
I mean, unbelievable.
Titus.
What was he doing trying to grab the ball?
Titus, come on, Titus.
What are we doing?
This offensive line sucks.
And by way, thank you very much, Nick Casario, for doing absolutely nothing in the trade deadline.
Hey.
Thanks again.
Thanks again for giving us word salad earlier this week.
I hope you enjoyed watching that.
They were ready to roll with Jared Patterson and Jew Scruggs.
The lines shake up.
CJ still felt the pressure.
But again, to their defense, every quarterback feels pressure.
They're in a game, but you're going to watch a quarterback going, man, I was sitting back there.
I had a chance for lunch.
I ordered room service.
I door dashed.
No, that's pressures by the NFL.
It was better this week, but it wasn't great.
They lost the Jets game because of pressure.
They didn't lose this game because of pressure.
No, not at all.
All right.
More of you on the line.
Richard, Jim and Jacob.
to you one, two, three, starting the second hour of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
713212-570. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. We take this program today until 2 o'clock. We've got to tell
the truth in one-half hour. The news at noon coming up, which will feature, I sent to Conner
something that I thought was interesting about a coach's brutal honesty and how he handles getting
himself ready for a football game. We'll have to play that for you coming up at the news at noon.
Rockets with a win as well.
LSU fan, what the hell was that?
Is Alabama still rushing another 150 yards here on the ground against you?
That was embarrassing.
You have 80,000, I mean, basically junior high-level educated people in one facility,
and you get your ass kicked.
Texas, by the way.
Oh, my gosh.
Beating up on those gators.
Gets your horns up, Ross?
Suck at gators.
That wasn't even a game.
It was bad.
That's fine.
I have a friend who was a floor.
Florida grad who's been talking about the SEC for like the last 20 years.
So he got some texts on Saturday.
All right.
Second hour next on 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
1103 on Sports Talk 790.
It is painful, Rossi.
All the NFL network ESPN show on the,
did Jared Gough really throw that many interceptions?
They really turn over that much.
And who is this kicker from nearby Tomball?
By the way, the fugals.
Oh, my God.
That second one was snuck them both in.
That was maximum
Houston sports pain.
Maximum.
It's almost like part of the football
got some of the yellow paint off of the goalpost.
At least the Kimey Fairbairn one, you're like,
oh, he hooked that. You knew immediately.
Like, oh, that's not going in.
But they snuck,
or Jake Bates sneaking both of those in.
Tom Balls, Jake Bates, by the way.
With a kiss.
Ish.
Ugh.
Not great.
And think about this.
At halftime, we were in flight coming back from Detroit,
and they were up 23 at the half and 236 or 238.
No, 237.
237.
237.
Yeah.
I'll get the score right.
That's fine.
A second, we were talking on the plane.
This will be the signature win.
I don't care if it's at home or not.
Detroit's a legitimate NMC title contender.
Detroit has won huge road games.
Detroit has beaten everybody up except one on team.
This would have been the, okay,
The team meeting worked.
The uniforms are cool.
The roof is open.
The vibe is good.
Energy's a place where teams can't come in and win.
Statement game.
Yeah.
Statement game.
That's what it should have been.
Yeah.
Didn't get it.
You had them on the ropes.
They're running the clock out with two minutes to go.
Then you go out there and C.J. Stroud orchestrates a masterful drive to get you up 23 to 7.
And then the second half happened.
And here's the thing about the Texans, especially in first half of these games.
is they're taking advantage of some stupidity.
There have been at least, I want to say,
three touchdowns this year or field goals.
The Texans have scored in the final minutes of quarters
before the half because of peculiar play calls
or weird use of time.
I thought Dan Campbell's or whoever is running their offense of the Lions.
Ben Johnson.
Ben Johnson's, right?
Who, by the way, is being probably highly regarded than Bobby Slovak is today.
But the way they called the plays with a minute 15 left to go,
and I think they had at least two of not all three in their.
timeouts was highly confusing.
They gifted the Texans
an extra possession and to the Texans credit.
They got it. They scored.
That's when I thought they were going to win.
And the first half of you were, after John Metchie was doing this thing, you're thinking,
hey, Nico, take your time, bra, you're good.
Tank Dell's getting out there.
The 10th quarterback in the Super Bowl era to throw five interceptions in a game
and win it.
See, this is why, this is a prime example of why I don't like Jared Gough wins the game.
It's, okay, well, it says and win, actually, never mind.
I thought it said and win.
Because it's like, Jared Gough won this game.
No, the Lions won the game.
Because Jared Gough didn't do a whole lot of help.
Quarterbacks getting all the credit for the wins and losses.
I just don't like that.
Yeah.
No, but that's what sports broadcasting has done.
I know.
It's all the quarterback.
And it's like, you know, C.J. Stroud wearing it.
I mean, he wasn't good in the second half.
He deserves some of the responsibility.
I mean, I don't think anybody that's a key skill position player doesn't deserve some criticism of this.
And it's okay to criticize him because, again, you can, you're allowed to do it.
It's nothing personal.
It's performance-based.
And I guarantee you, C.J. Stroud, in his car, driving home is like, why don't I throw that ball like I
through it. Why don't I miss it? What am I doing? What are, am I, am I forcing my hand? I think
part of the issue is he's losing confidence in his offensive line. I think he's rushing
throws. I think as I've mentioned this before on multiple occasions. I think his feet aren't set. I think
he's skittish. And that's a byproduct of not trusting the people around you. I think there was some
of that in the Jets game. I didn't really see it much here. I thought he was really confident and
cool. And on both of those throws, he had, I mean, he was maybe, I would have to go back
look, he was maybe under a little pressure on that
Dell throw, but the first throw, he was
just a rhythm throw.
It was just like a quick drop
and then boom, get it on and out. And he just
didn't put enough zip on it and the corner jumped
the route. And I'm watching some of his throws at Jared Galt
through. He's throwing dead ducks. These things
have got, they're like, Eiffis pitches.
The ball of his hand was terrible yesterday.
So, I mean, I don't
think, I'm not going to put
either of those interceptions from
C.J. Stroud to getting happy
feet or any of that stuff. But I'm saying
I think it's a byproduct of it. I think there
is, there is, the confidence
level on his
offensive line is nothing close
to what it was last year. And last year it was bad too,
but he was able to overcome that. I think he
I'm just going to say he had, he just
had made some two really bad throws.
It happens.
Yep. Let's go to Richard
in League City at 1108 on 790.
Richard, thanks for holding. Good morning.
Hey, good morning. So I got a couple things I want
to say about the Texans.
At first, I really hope there were a few Texas fans enjoying their afternoon, and they had the TV on the Rockets, and they saw Jaylen put a little party hat on Kate Cunningham, because that was a sick duck.
And if you were a Rockets fan, you wouldn't be sad today.
And so get on the, get on the wagon.
So what I want to say about the Texans, so I'm, my glass half full is that we know, we know C.J. Stroud is a franchise quarterback.
There's no question about that.
That question's answered.
We know Mixon is the right guy.
We know we've got the right head coach.
So I'm still bullish on our future.
But where I think is going on, and Ross, you talk about kind of playing aggressively and then conservatively.
The way I talk about it, it's like you're playing to win until you're playing not to lose.
And I feel like last year, no one had any expectations for that team.
They were like playing with house money.
They had rookie quarterback, rookie coaches, pretty much rookie everything with a status.
Bad Sack franchise.
And they came out and they way overperformed and became the NFL darling team of the year.
And we love them and we expect great things for them.
But this year, their picked as one of the five teams to go to the Super Bowl.
And I don't think that I think they're overthinking it because they seem to play better
when nothing is expected from them or when CJ is flushed out of the pocket often.
They just feel more intuitive.
but my feeling is they're overthinking it they're they're trying to play as if they are the
super bowl contending whatever choice and and and they don't know how to they they don't know how
to take that pressure and play loose they don't know how to play loose under that pressure well you know
the answer is though the response to that is well guess what when you're considered an elite
team in the afc and you are considered a super bowl contender richard don't you
you agree that pressure that comes with that i mean that's if if you want to be a big boy and you want to
step up you have to be able to adhere to having teams scout you properly and not overlook you and get
ready for you and so i i want that from any of the teams that i watch follow a fan of i want them
be able to say you know what it's tight it's it's a competitive matchup it's a quality team we can get
past that i don't want to be just overlooked because you know what you're going to be if you're
overlooked all the years, you're going to win nine games every year, and you're going to be
winning a walled card or maybe division once in a while, and then you're going to be out in the
first round, and we say, well, this team only won nine games, what would we expect? I think the
expectation levels for a Texan fan base in this town, rightfully so, was significantly higher
going into this year because of what they did last year. Well, I don't, and I agree with everything
you're saying, Matt, but I think my core point is just this is growing pains. Like, we have all
the pieces to warrant the pressure of being a championship contender, I think the thing we forgot,
and I think they forgot, is that these are the growing pains you have to go through. I don't know.
I'm not enough of an NFL fan to know if Mahomes went through a period like this, or Brady ever went
through a period like this. I know. So, I just, yeah, well, yeah.
Mahomes didn't, sadly, but he's also probably on the doorstep of the Hall of Fame already,
But do you have a question for I let you run, Richard?
That's it.
Okay, you got it.
Thanks for the phone call.
Appreciate it.
Good conversation.
I mean, it's, yeah, the temperature's turned up.
It is.
Yeah, no, this is not even necessarily like a dress rehearsal.
Like, you got put on five primetime games, and there's three in a row right here.
This is, the network said, you know what, Texans, we see you, we're making waves.
We're going to put you on the national stage.
And they are falling flat.
on their face. They're getting destroyed
by the New York Jets. They're getting up
on the Detroit Lions and then cratering
in the second half. They're looking
like they're just not ready for prime time.
And that's what is boiling down to right now.
They're looking like not a bad team
but just not an elite team.
What
incentive does NBC have to say we need the
Texans on Sunday night again? After the way
that they've been playing in these big games. I don't even know
what the ratings are. I'm sure the ratings are good.
Yeah, I mean, anything on Sunday night's good.
they would rather go to any number of other teams.
We've been begging for the Texans to get national shine and talking about how they've been
slided and all this other stuff for years and nobody pays attention to Houston sports.
They're paying attention to the Houston Texans.
They're putting them on national television.
And then they're scoring zero seconds, zero points in the second half of a game.
And then the other game, they're giving up eight sacks and they can't do anything offensively.
So what do we need to do?
We need just to stop with the, you know what I blame the fake media in this town for this.
You put them on a pedestal that just wasn't there.
I'm not blaming in. No, the fake media didn't get NBC to put them on Sunday night football.
No, no, no, no, their record did.
Their record did. And the fact that they looked like they were going to make a leap.
They traded for Stefan Diggs. They got Joe Mixon. And Joe Mixon has been a smash.
Unfortunately, Diggs tore his ACL.
But it's like the networks are taking the training wheels off and they're trying to put you on the national stage and you're falling into a ditch.

The rest of the way we're talking to you, we've got the news at noon as well.
1114 on Sports Talk 790, where Ross is here to tell you about low energy performances.
That was a low energy performance by the Texans in the second half.
Have you been thinking your energy has been slowing down?
How are your workouts going?
You feel like you're plateauing.
Are you not waking up and getting out of bed with the same motivation?
Before you went to bed the night before, was the libido in issue?
Is it getting embarrassing?
Putting you in a run.
What do I do?
I'm not feeling like myself.

More Matt Thomas.
Now on Sports Talk 790.
There's no excuse.
You know, that's a game that we should have had.
We did have and, you know, obviously it slipped.
But, you know, it ain't going to get no easier.
and I'm going to take it all upon myself
to make sure our guys, you know, is ready.
You know what I'm saying?
We finish these games.
We've got to stop playing to, you know, to lose.
We got to stop playing to not lose, you know what I'm saying?
And go play to win, you know what I'm saying?
So I just felt like we got to just take initiative,
own it, own our work, and look each other in the mirror.
It is what it is.
I know what you are saying.
Thank you, Joe.
Oh my God. Thank you, Joe.
Playing not to lose.
Was that a callout?
I hope it was.
By the way, I hate to correct, Joe.
It's going to get easier.
You're going to beat the Cowboys next Monday.
Everything's easier after the Lions.
That's one thing if we want to step back and look at the Forest.
The Lions are arguably the best.
I'm going to say it.
Look, the Chiefs keep getting lucky.
The Lions are the best team in football.
Yep.
The Lions are the best team.
An average team doesn't come back from 24.
3.6 of the half. 23-7th of the half. But you get the
best team in football. They try
to gift you the game by turning the ball over so
much you have to take advantage at home
and the Texans did not do it.
But that's awesome. I love
that Joe Mixon, that's what our caller said. That's what
we've been saying in a different way. Like not
aggressive enough,
playing not to lose.
The words out of Joe Mixon's
mouth, that's perfect.
They're not playing to win. They're playing not
to lose. And he said, know what I'm saying? And we said,
yes, we do know. We know. We know.
Exactly what you're saying.
Yes, Joe.
We've seen the second half of these games.
We know exactly what you're saying.
Win at the Cowboys, 7 and 4.
Win at home for Tennessee.
That's 8 and 4.
Win at Jacksonville, 9 and 4.
Win for the Dolphins 10 and 4.
Lose at Kansas City 10 and 5.
Lose to Baltimore, 10, and 6.
They will beat Tennessee in Nashville.
They will finish 11 and 6, and they will be your resounding
AFC South champions.
Can I be honest with you?
No, I'd rather you lie, but go ahead.
I hate when you tell the truth.
10 and 7-ish.
I'm feeling like we
I feel like we just chalk up all these
the Jaguars almost beat the Vikings.
Okay, the Titans
suck, but it's just the Texans
haven't put anybody away.
They're absolutely,
I feel like they're absolutely going to drop one of those games
to the Titans are Jaguars.
Those are not guaranteed wins
to me. All right, you know what? I'm trying to be
glass-half-full. I mean, yes, okay.
But I could all, at the same token, I could see them splitting
between the Chiefs and Ravens, winning one of those
games.
The chiefs look extremely vulnerable.
Now, you're going to be in Arrowhead.
You know what, though?
They're extremely vulnerable, but what do they do every time the gun has zero, zero, zero, zero on the clock?
Yeah, but that's because the kicker from the Broncos doin' the kick at the end of the game.
Like, they are so lucky.
That was a kick that was blocked.
Oh, I'm sorry.
And if you listen to Sunday from Kansas City, they knew how to game plan it.
Seriously, when you get off the show today, you will see a number of stories about we knew exactly how to block that kick.
Maybe they're full of BS,
Rossi. Maybe they are. They might be right, but
they knew how to block it.
And the Ravens have lost
the Browns and they lost to the Raiders.
So I'm saying, like, you can split those games to me.
All right. But also, but that's the Texans.
I feel like they could split those games, but I also feel
like they're going to lose to one of the Titans or Jaguars
teams, games. And that's just
to me, they're not mediocre,
but they're just good, not great. That's a phrase
I'm going to keep using. And guess what? During the
AFC South Rain, what were they?
Good not great. Nine and seven is not the bar,
Jacob on 790, thanks for holding good morning.
Yeah.
Hey, man.
Hey, this is a first, a second year quarterback and a second year coach, man.
They are still learning.
The office of coordinator is the problem, I feel.
And streaking the game, it's nothing wrong with streaking the game and playing not to lose.
Because when you've got a league going in the second half, if you have, they don't ever use the play option.
You know what I'm saying?
They were setting up.
They knew that they wanted to.
to shrink the game so they was going to play for the run.
So Mixing, they was going to
try him out to get. They never play action. They never
just, they officer coordinator. Don't know
what he's doing, but I don't know
who had them going to the, to the AFC championship
over Baltimore and Cincinnati
and Pittsburgh. Everybody's talking about
Pittsburgh, Stilers, needs to get a quarterback.
They don't give, they'll get Russell Wessor, like,
oh, he just, that was so long ago. He went to Super
Super Bowl, but he's this and that. And like
a borough,
trash. And I'll tell you something. Detroit,
they got to deal with Philadelphia. Philadelphia,
they're not going to, they're going to squinting all leagues.
And I think that the Texas is on their way.
How long it took Andy Reeves to finally get it?
How long did it take Belichick to finally get it?
It ain't like they came out the top winning.
For his second year, I think he's doing a great job.
And I think he needed to get him an O.C.
They got a lot. They was injured.
they get Mario back on the line.
They stay injured, too, man.
So I understand, you know, you know what I'm saying, that, you know,
that people walked on the wind, that thought they were going to the Super Bowl.
I don't think they, I think it's great that they went in a day going to win the South
two years in a row on their way and they develop.
And then I think eventually they get there.
All right, man.
Thanks, Jacob.
I mean, that's a glass half full approach.
I guess.
But, I mean, what he's saying is that this is all second year stuff and that second year teams
typically don't do this.
Well, the NFL world, meaning the television networks, thought this would be a team that was not going to be playing like an average second year team under new coach and a new quarterback.
The guys in the building over there on Fanon didn't believe this was a second year.
This was a, we are the division champions, we got better, we got aggressive in free agency, we went and got a new cornerback, we've spent some money, we're going to go compete with Baltimore and we're going to go compete with Kansas City.
I think, Jacob, what you just explained was for a young team like, who would be a second year,
like a Bronco team would be with Knicks next year.
We're getting better, but we're not going to be.
We're not all the way there.
I believe what you think are the Texans in second year is not what the people on Kirby believe.
And I think there's, there is serious disappointment that this team has not gotten over the hump against the elite teams.
The Jets just got destroyed.
by the Arizona Cardinals.
Yeah.
Like, okay, this game to the Lions, it's about, it's about the cumulative adding up of this season.
At the end of the day, you're six and four, but you have a negative point differential,
and you were the only team in the NFL with a winning record and a negative point differential.
That's who the Texans are.
That's where the disappointment lies.
Yeah. Jim Memorial on Sevenani.
Hi, Jim.
Hey, how are you guys doing?
Can you hear me okay?
Yes, sir.
Go ahead.
First of all, y'all nailed it.
But the main thing is, I think Roth said it.
They've only played one complete game, and you could argue that was inferior
because it was against the Patriots.
And there's a problem making adjustments at halftime.
Second of all, CJ, his pre-snap reads,
I was at the game yesterday.
I didn't see it because I went to the restroom,
but Andre Weir was saying that Shultz was wide open on that last play,
and he was waving his hands, and he wasn't even looking for him.
I don't know if you guys saw that or not.
I can't comment, but that's what Andre Weir was commenting on.
So why is Shultz not being utilized?
I mean, everybody else utilizes their tied-in.
They caught two touchdown passes from their tight-in.
I don't understand why we're not moving the ball around more.
And second of all, you just can't win games if you don't put two halves together.
So that's it.
Yeah, by the way, thanks to the phone call.
Shultz was thrown at four times yesterday.
That's not a small number.
It's not terrible for a tight end.
But also, to me, he just looks slow.
And he does get open, like, in zone coverage.
But he's not beating guys in man coverage.
And he's just not very open to me.
I don't think in the games early in the first half of the year he became a threat.
I think there was some drops along the way.
I think he was inability to get open in sometimes.
I think the Texans are going to have to absolutely address the tight-end position.
I think this will be Dalton Schultz's final year as a member of the game.
I think he's underperformed.
Well, what kind of deal did they sign him to?
I think it was just a one-year deal.
Oh, was it? Okay.
Well, I'm down to move on.
I think he's just been very pedestrian.
But again, yesterday.
Sam Leportez, a freak athlete.
He had three catches for six.
66 yards and Dalton Schultz had three catches for 66 yards.
It's just the one of Loportas went for a touchdown.
Here's the targets. Dell nine times, Metschy, six.
Schultz, Mixen, Hutchinson, were all four.
Cates Dover was two times.
So you threw to your tight end six times.
That's not a terrible ratio there out of 33 attempts.
Schultz is on a three-year deal.
Well, okay.
Dang.
You know, he's going to be released after one year.
How about that?
This is what I get for Tristan Matt.
Eh, you know, we...
Yeah, I wasn't...
I wasn't trying to...
You weren't in Nick Asario's office on that one.
No, I was trying to...
to decipher his word salad.
No, but I think
Dalton's been very poor this year.
Not even a sense
of just a number of catches.
I think drops, I think.
I think his blocking hasn't been good.
Other than that, he's great.
I'm sure he's a wonderful human being.
His usage has ticked up.
And he's a reliable
like zone, like I said, zone beater.
But he's just not one of the best tight-ins football.
He's not even close.
And he's yours for the next two years.
Let's go.
Well, you know, NFL stuff.
Depends on how much guaranteed money he has.
got up front.
Yeah, I'm not caught you much to let them go.
What's that dead caps going to be?
Exactly.
We could look at that.
All right, quick check on the tell the truth up next.
Then we got more of your phone calls.
We'll talk to Troy, Ray, Gary, C.J., Jim and Gary.
All right.
This is what we were talking about right here.
Let's go.
I'm glad you guys are in because, look, a lot of folks bumping around this city.
Right now listen to the show going, I thought we'd have, we were going to be better than this.
I thought we were going to get over the hump.
The second half Texans is a profound mystery.

Welcome. Good afternoon. The best sports lunch in H-town. Matt's really smart. He works hard.
He has a good grasp of players. He's been around the game.
You love him. We love him. So excited for the opportunity that Matt has in front of him, for sure.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
We have to win first and second down, right?
Too many negative plays on first and second down.
We didn't run the ball well.
Only 56 yards rushing the football.
So, you know, we didn't control the line of scrimmage when it came to running the football,
which is what we've been doing a good job of.
So when you don't play well on first and second down,
you find yourself in third and long, and it's hard to, you know, continuously work.
win third and long. Killer
Insink. That has been the central theme
so far. We're going to push to tell the truth
back a little bit because frankly,
unlike other people,
we don't need to necessarily hear ourselves talk.
The most interactive show
in the marketplace. So when people want to call
and talk, we'll let you all do it because that's what we want to do.
Let's go, baby.
Dalton Schultz, we're going to go ahead and add an additional
year to his contract. He's not going to five-year contractors.
No! No! I mean,
I was two-offs. I want to be two-off in the other direction.
Five-year guarantee.
All money.
713-212-5-7-90.
Let's get those phone calls in because we do want to hear from you folks,
the great city of Houston, Texas.
Let's go to Troy Humble on the Matt Thomas show.
Ross, Troy, thank you for holding good morning.
Ross, how y'all doing, man?
Sorry to hear about that don't shows, man, for that long
because he's one of the worst pocket tight years in the NFL.
He's an absolute zero at the run game.
But it looks like you can cut him after this year.
without much cap issues.
Well, we'll see.
About the Texan, look,
all they think that's good
is they don't have to play the NFC Central now.
They're done with that because three of their losses
have come to that division.
I just think,
I mean, injuries
does,
injuries,
they've had injuries to keep people.
I mean,
I'm not making excuses,
but that does add it.
You know,
you're starting all pro wire receiver
is missed the last five games.
And he misses the,
Stefan did.
So.
Yeah,
but you're up,
but Troy,
you're up 23,
seven without those guys yesterday.
Let me go to that part.
I'll get to that part.
Okay, we get to that part.
So I'm going half, like to say, glass half empty on that.
You know, Christian Harris supposed to be one of your best starting lineback
since he ain't touched the field all season long.
You got you start the rookie at corner and a rookie at the safety.
Having said that game after game, these last losses,
you've had a chance to win these games via Green Bay and all those close games.
And this game should have been a blowout.
No doubt about it.
The way you dominated Detroit.
And I just go back, I don't want to blame it on the officer play caller,
but it's a combination of everything.
CJ, like I think you mentioned it, this year, CJ has been off
because of the past protection, I wouldn't say happy feet,
but these are throws that he normally makes kind of deal.
That tank deal that was wide open.
I just think he never saw that safety.
He just thought tanked was just wide open, busted play.
And he just threw it the way he did.
But having said that it's incumbent on your car.
coach and your offensive coordinator to close these games out.
You know, you've had every chance to win these games.
To go zero, no points in the second half, five games without a touchdown in the second half.
It's just that with this offense, this so-called offensive play caller, it doesn't make sense.
And so the glass half of it is that they're six and four and they got the Cowboys coming up.
I don't want to see no close 23 to 20 win over the Cowboys.
They need to stomp them.
But they need to take stock.
Okay.
because CJ did have a pretty good pass protection last night.
I know he got sacked four times, but he had time to throw.
So they need to lock it down because the fans are, like I said, we're upset,
but we're not think they're a bad team.
They're a good team.
We just feel like they're playing without confidence right now.
That's what I think.
CJ, they had all the confidence, CJ.
He made every play, every throw last year, and the team went at CJ Strault.
This year, you don't see as good, much confidence in them this year.
and I think the team is struggling because of that.
But I got confidence in him.
They're going to get it going.
I still got confidence in my Texas.
That's all I got, man.
Thanks.
All right.
And you should still have confidence your team.
I just think what I've learned here in the last couple weeks, Ross,
is I think that the expectations have been,
this isn't a fan base that's going,
well, we've had a couple of tough games against some good opponents,
and we're going to get past this.
And once we get to December,
and get the engines going again, look out, here we come.
I think the reality is starting to kick in that there is still, and you and I've talked about
this a lot, such a separation between the elite teams, the NFL, and where the Texans are right
now and the Texans are not. They're a good team, but they are far from elite, and they're
haven't put together in an elite performance except for the game against a team that's won
three games this year, and that was the New England Patriots.
Yeah, and it was their first round quarterback in his very first start. You have lost three
of your last four games. The one win
was a field goal game
at home against a
quarterback that was benched the next
week. That's it.
Three points over the Colts.
And these last two,
and what I was saying at that point when they were
six and two
was like, you know what, I'm going to be glass-havilled.
We haven't seen them play their best football
and maybe things
are going to be okay. They're going to get better. They're going to clean
some of this stuff. Stuff up. They have
cleaned up a lot of the penalties. They hasn't been as
as it was early on in the season, but it's still far too often the pressure, the conservative
play calling, they're not taking advantage of the opportunities afforded to you by the other team.
They just haven't done it enough.
Let's go to Gary and Montgomery at 1140 on 7-90.
Gary, thanks for holding.
What's on your mind?
After a good guy.
I want to touch base on something that CJ said.
I think it was week four in a press conference.
He talked about he is not allowed to check out of plays.
and when he said that, I was completely shocked.
I couldn't, one of all,
it's probably too much information to release out there,
but I don't know if you guys noticed that
because I started watching a lot more.
After that game, other teams
can hear that too, by the way.
Well, how about this?
How about the fact that every time they break snap?
I don't even interrupt you, but how about time in time they break the huddle?
There's hardly any time left from the playcock.
Even if he wanted to make an adjustment,
there's no time for him to kind of look over the field.
100%.
And where do big, huge plays
come from. They come from checkouts.
They come from those plays. Ask Peyton
Manning. Ask Tom Brady.
That is critical to big plays.
They're missing that so much.
Not allowing him to check out of a
play is absolutely amazing. I cannot
understand. He's second year quarterback.
He seems smart. He's talented.
What is the problem?
So in that effort,
you can see where even defenses, maybe
even heard that and said, oh, well,
let's make your adjustments
at the halftime, too. They're not making the right
adjustments. So they're coming out, and even though they had a good first half, right, C.J.
still not checking out of plays, but it had a good game plan. Second half, they seem, hey,
this is what they're going to do to us now. They're making their adjustment, and C.J. still can't
check out of a play. There's no, there's not a chance of anything happening with the, with the
Texans until that happens. I just 100% believe that. I don't, I don't really know exactly
about the structure of their offense and what they're doing. I have to imagine that they either
if C.J. Stroud isn't able to call his own play or his own audible, they probably at the minimum have two different plays that they call and then he can check to the second.
Yeah, I can't imagine in today's NFL world with the communication that once the play is called out of the huddle that there's no room for adaptation.
At the very least, they probably have two plays and he can check to the other one.
I don't, and look, this is not, I don't know. This is a question for C.J. Stroud or Bobby Sloick or Damiko Ryans or somebody.
But I would say at the very minimum, likely he can check to another play.
Yeah. Let's go to Ray in North Dakota on 790. Hi, Ray.
Hi, what's going on, Father? Hi.
Hey, man, quick question for a question. Before asking a question,
and that played with Armist St. Brown, when he got that first down,
did we have a timeout left then?
When was this?
When Armine Brown got the first down on the third and six, did we have a timeout right there?
They might have had one timeout, I think.
I can't remember.
You're talking about the very last drive of the game?
Yeah, the very last drive of the game.
We had a time out left before he got that first down, right?
Yes.
This is the second time or a couple times where I see that with D'Amico ride.
I'm not in the RICO RISE.
The RICO is the coach.
But at some point in time, like, we got to put summons on the Miko
because, like, when Feitchie was kind of that situation with Adams,
you know what I'm saying, and they didn't call the time out,
Like, they were running a zone right there on that last drive when St. Brown got that first down.
And there was a lineback that shot in there over there.
Like, why are we not, like, in a nickel on the third and sixth and having more Dibbs on the field?
I know we had the injuries.
And then, like, I think it's up to DeLico Rye's too, man.
Like, he's got to do something about this play calling that Bobby Sloog is putting out there.
Like, can they please get him to take these reverses out of the play?
playbook and just not call those plays and these like on creative
screen. Well see, I didn't necessarily mind using Joe Mixing
Lange had a couple of times. I thought there was some diversity to it.
I think some of the Tank Del Reverse. Yeah, maybe so. But I mean
the end around with mixing worked out well. I need
my moving parts moving around a little bit here.
Just running over left tackle wasn't doing the job. Yeah, but
I think we might have to get an obligatory Texans
end around failure. It feels like it.
happen at least once a week.
Yeah, that's true.
Ted Dell's losing like eight yards of carry
on these things. What's going on?
But to the defense
of him, at least there's some diversity
to it. I just, I think predictability
is part of the reason why this team
becomes such a tough team to watch
in the second half. And also time and
place. On Thursday night
when C.J. Stroud is limping,
literally limping around on the field
and you run a goal line fade against him
against DJ Reed, one of the better
cornerbacks in the league, that was not,
with Joe Mixing throwing the ball.
Not the time, not to place, Bobby Sloick.
Nope. 1145 on Sports Talks,
70. We're going to take our To Tell the Truth move it to 1230,
right after the news at noon. We'll do that.
So we have four sports takes that we'll get to,
of which three I don't believe one I do. We'll get to that.
We got Roger and Gary will get to you guys, the news at noon.
And more on the Texans,
failure to crush, failure to finish.
Ooh, I like that.
How about failure to finish?
You know, there's a movie failure to launch.
Failure to finish.
Hmm.
Okay.
Is that the new theme of the Texans?
I guess.
I mean, it happens, Matt.
By the way, unpipe-led or take real quick in five seconds?
Yes.
Texans uniform is hard to read on TV.
Mike Torrico kept calling them awful because he couldn't read the numbers.
As a play-by-play guy?
I know.
I'm 100% behind him.
You know what?
As a Joe fan, it's okay.
As Joe fan, shut your bum ass up.
Is the Puppa Play guy?
He's 100% right.
1146 on Sports Talks 790.

Real bit
Quick bit of non-breaking news
But it is news
The University of Nebraska
Is going to have a new offensive coordinator this week
I think they're playing USC
If I'm not mistaken
Let me double check and see what that is
They are playing
Yeah USC
The new OC for Nebraska
Dana Holgerson
Oh really?
10 days ago he signs up as an assistant,
as a consultant, and now he's the OC.
Okay, is that where he signed up as a...
I'm trying to remember where he signed up his office.
No, he went to TCU originally.
Oh, okay, yeah.
Okay, I didn't think it was Nebraska.
So he's moving from Fort Worth to Lincoln
to now the OC spot.
Well, Matt, go Huskers.
You know those OCs make crazy money.
Dana's done quite well.
Dana did quite well for himself in Houston.
Dana's... God, Dana's doing really well.
language, Matthew.
I said Dana's doing really well.
I don't think I said.
You said, God dangie Dana.
No, no.
I was like, what?
Excuse me?
No, no.
I know.
I'm just kidding.
A lot of whiskey.
A lot of bourbon.
A lot of beer.
A lot of other things.
What are you talking about?
Country concerts?
Exactly.
Gary and Spring on 790.
Hi, Gary.
Hey, Matt, Ross.
Hi.
Hey, let me, I have a question I want to ask you.
No doubt they should have won that game yesterday.
They're having trouble scoring, obviously, in the second half here.
Nico Collins.
Man, I love that name, Nico.
I was going to have another kid, and then it was a boy, I'd name him Nico, but I'm too old for that.
But let me ask you two questions about Nico.
And he's been out how many games, four or five?
Five now, total.
And what's their record?
Well, he's been out?
Two and three.
Okay.
And I'm not a man that thinks one man or one person can make all the difference in the world and team.
But some are, there's a few.
And what was their record when he was playing?
Well, that would be four and one.
Okay, that's kind of a big difference right there.
It's not that they would have, I don't think they win the Jets game if Nico Collins is on the field.
Last night you could argue that they would win if Nico Collins were there because it was a close.
closer game.
He definitely makes a difference, but there have also been some really good competitors.
I mean, they're, you know.
Yeah.
But when he was in there, did he catch any touchdown passes or any, the score in the
second half when he was in there?
Hey, Google's your friend.
Go knock it out.
Roger, go knock back.
Yeah, everything was better with Nico Collins.
Yeah, everything is better.
He's playing an all pro level.
So, so you guys, neither one of you think that he's, that he's a single difference in why
they're going on a downhill.
I know their offensive line.
Is he playing left guard?
Yeah.
Was he playing left guard for, if he could have played left guard for Kenyon Green, then maybe I would argue that it's.
If he could have played on the offensive line, that made him a difference.
But no, Nico was leading the league in receiving guards when he went out.
He is very much missed.
He's a deep threat.
But that hasn't been the issue.
I mean, there has line protection.
It's been part of it.
And now, Gary, I disagree with you.
Yeah, is that the point you're trying to make, Gary, with this Socratic question asking?
Like, are you, what did you say?
Socratic?
Yeah, no, he's not a guard in any of that, but he is a best receiver in football.
So with him coming back, it could make a big difference.
Yeah, I think it absolutely makes it big difference.
And as I said, I think that we could argue that they win that game if Nico Collins is on the field last night.
But they don't beat the jet.
Kenyon Green was getting blown up every other second in that Jets game.
they don't win that Jets game if Nico Collins is there because
because you're getting sacked eight times and you're under pressure
every time that C.J. Stroud drop back.
So does it help? Yes.
Is it the sole reason they've been losing these games?
These games, I would say no.
Go back to that word you used a minute ago.
The Socratic method of tea.
Are you familiar with the Socratic method of teaching, Matt?
I would like for you to run.
So he's asking Quest.
That's how you do to kind of prod to your argument.
How long has Nico Collins been?
Right.
How many games have they lost with Nico Collins out?
What's their record before he was out?
They needed to get to get to his point.
There was a little bit of a I want to get a gotcha moment in there.
Yeah, I like the Socratic.
I'm with it.
I think Socratic is a great word.
Sox.
It's how, if you read the old.
Socrates.
Right.
If you read the old Plato stuff and it's.
We should do on the show from here on out a daily Socratic argument of the day.
All right.
That's what he was doing.
Yeah.
It would be too simplistic to say if Nico Collins on the football field, they would not have
dropped three or four.
I agree.
Would have helped? Absolutely.
Is he one of the elite receivers in the NFL this year?
No question.
Yeah, if he was throwing to Nico Collins rather than Xavier Hutchinson on third down, things probably would go better.
For sure.
I would agree.
And you know what?
The defenses would have given Nico Collins more respect.
Now, granted, we got to talk about this.
The safeties for the Lions, did you see the stat during the game?
They had not given up a touchdown this year.
Really?
Yes.
They had 10 interceptions between the Lions.
The two safeties are Branch and Joseph.
No touchdowns allowed to them.
Ten I&T's, numerous past breakups.
You went against an elite secondary yesterday.
Real quick, let's go to Scott and River Oak.
Scott says you were at the game last night,
and what did you see that maybe the rest of us didn't see?
Well, the only thing I would say,
I know we were just talking about,
the previous caller was talking about Nico Collins.
he's obviously going to make a little somewhat of a difference.
I really don't think, you know, from my eye being there,
I actually thought the pass protection was a lot better yesterday.
Would you guys agree with that?
It was better, but it was not a lot better.
He still got a lot of pressures.
Pro football focus already put their grades out,
I think on some of the things and said it did not turn out particularly well.
It was better because he wasn't running for his life every single play.
It still gets sacked four times.
The running, run blocking was not good as it was in previous.
weeks. It was, I would just say
a little better. Is that, is that okay? Or do you want, do you see
something that I didn't see? No, no. I mean, I would say a little bit better
is fine. But I mean, there was some of it yesterday in my mind
was on CJ, to be perfectly honest with you. There was one sack he took
and we were deep in our own end zone where he, yes, he got sacked and the
protection wasn't great, but he didn't move up in the pocket as well as he
probably should have. Obviously that played a tank being there,
tank, the one in the end zone where you threw an interception, live, it looked like tank was
wide open and the ball was either underthrown or late, you know, from my vantage point is what
that, and that would have been the difference in the game, but, you know, it was just,
that was just a brutal loss and to get home at 1230 and still have to go to work today and
be very tired. I mean, it was just unbelievable. And oh, I have a good, fun observation
for you. I guess who I saw there, Mr. Detroit, Tom.
to ruin Houston's lives himself.
I saw AJ Hinch at the game actually.
Oh, no.
You serious?
Who was he rooting for?
Was he wearing gear?
He was not wearing gear.
I saw him at the end when he was going down the, I was in the club section,
and he was going down the escalator, and he was not wearing any gear.
But, I mean, I would have to him, and I didn't get a chance to say anything to him.
If I would have, if I would have been close enough, I absolutely would have,
just like asking who he was rooting for, but I don't know who he was reading for.
I'd have to imagine he was reading for Detroit to just keep this.
Yeah.
Yeah.
My guess is, thanks for the phone call, my guess is that Dan Campbell probably invited it.
Those coaching fraternity guys, they all take each other.
They're broskies like that?
No.
Broskys are like 25-year-old dudes that make $40,000 a year.
I'm talking about real grown-ass man.
I think partying with Dan Campbell would be pretty fun.
But I don't think Dan Campbell's a brosky.
He might have been a brosky 20 years ago.
As long as he doesn't like chug a beer and headbutch you, it might be probably a fun time.
That's true.
All right.

This is the Matt Thomas show.
1206 on Sports Talk 790.
We are halfway done.
We want to hear from you.
It's 713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-790.
Where are your Texans in your mind right now?
Did you sell them too high on being a team
that would be a legitimate Super Bowl contender?
Or is there still too much work to be done?
We'll discuss more of that after the news at noon.
And with that, the 790 Sports Center, the sports desk.
Here's Ross.
All right, Matt, we're going to go ahead and take a look at the news around the world at noon.
Let's start with a heartbreaker in Houston last night.
23 to 7 at the half.
23 to 7 at the half.
You do not score a point in the second half, and you lose on, I mean,
right side kiss of the upright, left side kiss of the upright,
Jake Bates field goals.
Tom balls, Jake Bates.
And you lose 26 to 23.
The Texans picking up the pieces, Matt,
and they get the extra day.
They play Monday night at the Dallas Cowboys.
Get right game, I'm hoping,
for my, as I am Battle of Red Ross,
my Houston Texans.
Have you seen the opening line on that game, by the way?
I believe it is a seven-point spread.
Yes, seven and a half.
now. So you gotta pay
for the hook now. You want the
Texans. Ain't scared.
I'm a little scared.
Because it on the road or just because
they're just the doldrums continue. Michael Parsons
is back. He seems to be very upset.
Yeah, but you've got Tray Lance and Cooper
Rush. Well, at least it's going to be a night game, so nobody's
going to be blinded in the red zone by
their own players. And darling, where are you
going to be, girl? We got to see where you
and your fan bases. I'm sure they're going to be there.
Oh, traveling Texans. It's not going to help
because it's Monday night. I bet you it'd be more
it was Sunday night.
Oh, yeah.
Or Sunday noon or 3.50.
Or it still should be a lot more Texans fans, I would guess.
Yeah.
A lot of.
So they're going to be doing noon hookups.
What does that mean?
They're going to have sex before the game on Monday.
You know what hookups are.
Traveling Texas is going to be bored on a Monday.
What else are they going to do?
Why did that just come out of your mouth?
You're a one of a con, Matthew.
Okay, here's the deal.
If you're a traveling, if you're a traveling Texas,
tell us what's really.
going on on these trips.
I'm flabbergasted.
Back to the news at noon.
Back to the news at noon.
The Rockets won.
Fred had seven in the third, along with a couple of the steals, and two assists.
And a man Thompson comes up with a turnover into grand.
The emphatic call.
So I'm sitting here calling on a couple stats.
Oh, a man Thompson sold the inbound pass.
And he throws it to J. Legreen.
Good God, that man's got, Kay Cunningham's got children.
I mean, I don't be does, but I'm a...
I'm assuming he would like to.
He doesn't.
He's got a family of some sort.
Well, he was also taken number one ahead of Jalen Green,
who screamed at him and got the tech, Matthew.
Yes, he did.
What was that like?
He got that.
I was like, what happened?
And they go, yep, got teed up.
He goes, I'm not number four, bitch.
Or number two.
Well, yeah, he wears number four.
Yeah, where's number four?
So the Rockets.
Now, explain that game to him, Matt.
I had it on.
I'm going to be honest, I wasn't 100% invested.
We have to go back and check the tape.
Apren Changu missed a free throw.
Then Detroit comes down.
They get fouled.
They have a chance to get free throws.
They miss.
Then they get fouled again.
And the free throws are missed.
And then Jaden Ivy in the right baseline grabs the second rebound off the miss.
And can't put a shot up and the Rockets escape.
If the playoffs started today.
Oh, you know much I love that.
I'm on pace guy.
Seventh seed for the Rockets.
They were the four seed two days ago.
I know.
Damn.
Well, you lose.
I mean, they just got destroyed.
The Oklahoma City Thunder defense is really good.
But bad news for them, by the way,
as Chet Holmgren has a Lillac-Wing fracture, Matt.
How's your right-liac wing?
I think the NBA does a really good job of making up names for injuries.
No, they go.
The injury report, they talk about metatarsals and metacarpals
and right-lac wing fractures.
They don't mess around.
I kind of like that.
It's refreshing.
because it makes me have to go to the Google
to figure out exactly what he's talking about. Yeah, but this may
yeah, but would you rather have that or the a
Astro? He's got some discomfort in his body. No, no, foot injury.
A lower, ankle sorens. Lower body
discomfort. No, no, no, dumb it down.
Give me the right lilac wing wing.
The general public does not care about what a lilac injury is.
But I can learn. You say bad hip. Say bad hip. Right wing
lilac fracture.
So that begs the question, Matt.
Chet Hongren,
I-H or IP?
What's his body,
height and weight?
Oh, it's a pelvic fracture.
He fractured his pelvis?
That's not good for anyone.
He's good, too.
Block shots.
Hits threes.
Something we were thinking about when he was coming out of the draft.
I've told people in Oklahoma City, I said when the number one pick was Pado Bancaro.
All of Rocket Fanbation was like, don't pick Chet.
Don't pick Chet.
I wanted Paula Baccaro.
And then Chet got picked two, and the place went bonkers.
We got your box.
Jibari.
Jibari's been
overwhelming.
Offensively, he has not
performed well so far.
He's averaging six,
11 points per game,
six and a half rebound,
shooting 41% from the floor
and 27% from three.
All right, Matt,
well, elsewhere in sports,
how about them New Orleans Saints?
Beat the Falcons yesterday.
They beat the Falcons.
They mean,
backs against the wall,
bunch of people on IR,
not expected to win the game.
They did.
And well,
here is interim head coach
Darren Rizzy after the game.
No, man, I'm a pretty open guy, so
this is how my day started. I get down here to the
state, I get down here in the head coach's locker room, which
I've never used before, right? So here I am early in the morning.
I go to the bathroom, and this is how my day started. I clogged the toilet.
And I'm like, this is going to be a crappy day,
pun intended. And so, listen, I'm like,
okay, this is not really a great start to the day. Here we go.
And so, yeah, I'm not really feeling like a head coach
of an NFL team right now.
So I'm like, really?
This is really how we're going to start my day.
But listen, there was moments during the game.
I'm so wrapped up in my routine.
There was moments today where like I'm almost forgetting.
I'm just going through my routine.
And I'm kind of forgetting that I'm the head coach a couple times.
All true.
All right.
So the issue is, are we blaming his digestive system?
blaming the old plumbing at the Superdome.
I got to imagine they have modern toilets over there, right?
It's an old building.
It's an old building.
I don't want to be talking about this, Matt.
I guess I brought it up on News at Noon.
I'm just saying, the News at Noon brings you stories that other news stations are
uncomfortable bringing it up.
This is why you tune in to the News at Noon on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
I mean, how many times in your life have you gone for that morning one and he called your toilet?
It happens to all of us.
Yeah.
And then you slip where you're getting up and get a lilac fracture.
Is that what happened to chat?
Yeah.
He was trying to drop a couple pounds.
I believe this happened on the court.
Okay.
That's the news.
How's your right?
Lylac.
It's better my left.
Okay.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
we got to tell the truth
at bottom of the hour
at 1 o'clock
we put the music
to the dastardly events
that were you at last night
Ross
your beloved Texans
had a 26
to 9 lead at the intermission
23 to 7
are you okay
it just feels better
when I make up the score
okay
doesn't seem nearly as better
or maybe it feels worse
they had a 16 point lead
at the intermission
when let me ask you this Houston I'm asking you this right now 713 212 570 I want you to help
Domeico Ryan's and his team get that killer instinct in the second half how do you fix that
713 212 570 time is 1215 it is the Matt Thomas show here on sports talk 790 with a word

More Matt Thomas
Now
On Sports Talk 790
I feel like this game was on me
You know definitely
Gotta make plays
Got to make throws
Can't turn the ball over
And when we're in scoring position
So yeah
I blame this on me
You know I got to be better
In those moments
So yeah
It's really just you gotta go down
To score in the red zone
And defense is getting the turnovers
Like they were
So you got to be able to you know
reward them with points and that's something we didn't do so you know i feel like i'm the one to blame
all right is that lip service from cj or is he being authentic
i believe the answer that is he is being authentic i think he is wearing this as much as anybody
else and i'm way okay with that 713212 5 790 i don't believe when i see cj straub ever speak in
front of a podium microphone. He's doing it just to be politically correct. Other
quarterbacks? Absolutely.
Play it again. Play the cut again, Connor, if you don't mind. I think this is him being
authentic and not just trying to give us quarterback speak.
I feel like this game was on me. You know, definitely. Got to make plays, got to make
throws. Can't turn the ball over and we're in scoring position. So I blame this on me. You know,
got to be better in those moments.
So, yeah, it's really just got to go down to score in the red zone.
And the defense is getting the turnovers like they were.
So you got to be able to, you know, reward them with points.
And that's something we didn't do.
So, you know, I feel like I'm the one to blame.
Don't be so hard on yourself, CJ.
What?
He should wear it.
But he should not wear it by himself.
He's part of it.
Yeah, it's not by himself.
Yeah.
I think he does know that he has to play better.
I think there's a tinge of him.
He's going to put it on himself.
they could lose any they could lose a game and give up a bunch of 55 points and he would say it's on me
he'd be like yeah I got if I had to throw that just one more touchdown there is some of that but
I do think there is some genuine feelings of I cost us this game and well I'm not going to say he
cost them the game it was a number of things that we can point to but those were two really bad
interceptions you're coming out of the you're up 23 to 7 you want to put your stamp on that game
You want to get a touchdown drive going.
You throw on first down, shocking the world, really, the way that the Bobby Sloan calls plays, and you throw a pick.
That was tough.
And then the second one with Tankdale wide open.
You know what it is?
Part of this is that he's making throws that a normal rookie would make.
He didn't make those throws last year.
And this is stuff that we're not seeing him accustomed to doing.
He still made some special throws.
that second quarter drive
that Dalton Schultz to the
side line was special. That John Metchie
touchdown pass. That was an incredible throw.
He made a handful of like wow throws and he does that every week.
He still is going to delight you
way more than he's going to disappoint you.
But he's a little more human this year than he was last year.
I would say those,
especially the Tank Dell one really hurts.
The other like you're throwing an out route
and it gets jumped by the corner.
That happens every week in the NFL.
That feels more excusable.
But the one to the Tank Dell where he just kind of lofted, casually lofted it up there and allowed the defense to come back.
That was a bad one.
Let's go to Biscuit on 790 and 1224.
Biscuit, good afternoon.
Hey, good afternoon, my brothers.
Hi.
Hey, Ross and Matt, I'm going to kind of disagree with you on a couple points you guys been talking about.
And to see Day's response, he's absolutely right.
You know what I mean?
He's absolutely right.
Like you say, that coming out the locker room and throwing in a second on the first play?
I mean, that's like the momentum, you could just steal the most.
That gave Detroit life.
Even though they didn't score, it's like, no, man, we're a different team in the second half.
And that's where I get to, I disagree with you, Ross.
When one team comes out the locker room and does better on a regular basis
and one team comes out of the locker room does worse on a regular basis,
yeah, there's something going on.
It's something that's happening.
And to me, what's happening is
what you did in the first half
no longer works.
Now what can you do next?
And that's where the techans are getting stuck.
To me, there's no difference between
last night game and the Buffalo game,
only that we won the Buffalo game.
So we kind of like,
well, yeah, now there's some issues
going on that they got to address.
And then another problem was
Kenyon Green was the scapegoat for the offense.
Now he's gone.
So you can't just put it on Kenyon Green.
It's more things going on that they need to correct.
And to me, I'm going to disagree with you again.
I think Shultz need to be targeted more.
Because that's what, CJ, if you watch that first player out of the halftime,
when he tried to throw it to Tankdale,
Dawkins showed you the hook on the same side.
He was open.
But CJ, for whatever reason, he likes throwing it to the,
white out. And he tried
to whip it. It's a harder throw
toward the side line. And you're right.
The guy was reading,
paint Dale kind of rounded off the route, so the guy
jumped the route, and he
intercepted it. But if he just took the easy throw
to the shoulder to Schultz, we've got six, seven yards.
That's what he got to do more of.
And last I would say, for Slow it,
they did make an adjustment.
We got to give them credit. They did make an
adjustment on the offensive line. They were
double teaming with helping the left
guard out and that stopped a lot of it
and then the backs would come up tight on
some of those long third down plays
and they were picking the blitzes up the A gap
so C.J. had a little more time. It wasn't perfect
but it was better and so I see
the adjustments being made. The penalties
are down. It's just
the Texas that's got a few things to tweak but they're
right there and that's all I've got to say they're right there.
They're right there with the best team.
No they're not. No, no, no, no, come on.
You brought up a lot of good information.
They're not right there.
They have lost.
Man, this is what I'm saying.
Matt, this is what I'm saying to you.
The lack of experience is the biggest problem, in my opinion.
The lack of, these other teams have been through wars, man.
They just got to realize it takes four quarters.
And you get some of the guys healthy and stop running on first every time.
I think they're going to be okay, man.
Let me tell you.
Laramie Townsell's been through the wars.
Joe Mixon's been through the war.
I mean, Dalton Schultz has been through the wars.
But it's just two players, man. That's just two.
And Tonzo, don't get me started on Tonzo.
Oh, no, you know what? You're preaching to my choir.
You're no, yeah.
Oh, my God. And that's one of the problems.
He's supposed to be your leader, and he's not coming through in the court.
There's no excuse. Okay, we believe the guard get beat up the middle or, you know, some of that.
That dude kind of out there's on Trump, they didn't get a hand on him.
And it's like, and this is in the fourth quarter.
It's like, come on. You're supposed to be the star. We're supposed to not worry about the left side.
And tons of, you know, for whatever reason, man, he's just not, he's not the clutch guys they need him to be when the rubber meets the road when it's nut cutting time in the four quarter.
Thank you, Biscay, I got to roll, my man.
Thank you.
They're not right there.
I'm sorry.
You don't force all those turnovers.
You don't have a cyclical patterns.
And the cyclical pattern is this Texans football team is not performing the second half of games.
Yeah, but they lost on a last second field goal.
They're not right there.
And you know what I mean by that.
I mean, literally...
It's a semantical argument, which...
Correct.
That's for a later show.
Yes.
Being in the NFL, they're a couple of plays away,
but in the NFL, a couple of plays away is what separates the good from the good.
Yeah.
So...
It's like losing a baseball game over and over four to three.
You know?
Yeah.
You still take a loss.
You don't.
You don't put teams, elite teams figure out a way to force the turnovers and hold on the games.
Elite teams put feet on throats.
Yes.
Elite teams are aggressive.
Elite teams blow people out once in a while and not just the Patriots on their first start.
Like we talked about the Ravens.
The Ravens have three losses.
A couple of them were bad.
But the Ravens have, they've boatraced the bills.
They've boatraced teams where they're destroying them and where they look unstoppable.
Have at any point in this year, have we said, man, the Texans looked unstoppable today?
No.
And that's the problem.
We have seen the lions look unstoppable.
We have seen the Ravens look unstoppable.
We've seen other teams in the NFL looked at the bills.
We have not seen it from the Texans.
You hung around with the Colts twice.
Anthony Richardson got benched and you can barely beat them out of field goal.
Look, the Texans are good, but they're not just right there.
And that's what I think is frustrating.
Like I said, it would have been almost easier.
It's easy to say this afterwards.
But if Montgomery runs for 120, Gibbs runs for 100,
and they score three touchdowns,
and you just get out physical,
it's easier to take to where you had it on a platter
and you fumbled.
You fumbled the game away.
Or if golf were thrown for 300 yards and four touchdowns,
like you normally does.
All right, the tell the truth is up next,

Texans on three.
one, two, three.
Back to Battle Red Ross and Liberty white-ass Matt Thomas.
What up, what up?
That is what I am.
Real pale Texans talk continues on the Matt Thomas show.
What up? What up?
Love talking to y'all. Seriously.
I mean, I always agree with you, but we love talking to you.
And that's why we don't really do it to tell the truth at 1130, but since so many people wanted to talk, Texans, we push it an hour back.
And that's what we're going to do.
We're not going to just put segments in just to,
Kill time. If people want to talk Texans, we want to talk Texans with you. We want to open those phone lines up. Get you guys going at 713-2-5-790. 7-1-3-2-5-7-90. Time now for us to play a weekly feature called The Tell the Truth. And here's how it works. I'm going to give you four sports opinions, Ross and Connor. And you're going to say, nope, the three of them. One, I do believe. Which one of the four am I telling the truth?
This is strictly opinions, not facts.
Okay.
My opinion number one is
Kansas City continues to
live by
I mean...
Hanging by a thread.
Hanging by a thread
on their skin or their teeth.
Whatever.
Escape with wins.
I got terrible news for you.
This trend's going to continue.
I can't believe this.
But they've won so many games the same way.
They're going 17 and 0.
And I'm not happy about it
because they should deserve
at least two or three losses.
But the reality is,
If they're doing this and barely get
When they get firing in all cylinders,
they're going to be unstoppable.
They're going 17 and 0.
Okay?
Number two.
I like me some Marine Shepherd.
I wanted to become a jump shooter
because this team still needs perimeter threats.
But I don't know if 10 minutes per game is going to necessarily cut it.
I have seen a lot of high draft picks for the rockets,
including now Cam Whitmore.
A man Thompson went down there.
I think a short run down to the G-League
to kind of get the jump shot going for Reed Sheppard
wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
Okay?
Because you already got a man, Thompson, backing up front of the point.
So if you lost him for a few games just to go down there
and be a viper and score 35 points and knock down in eight or nine-threes,
it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
You'd go dunk on Brony?
Correct.
So I would say Reed Shepherd,
a G-Leod trip wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for a while.
Okay.
Okay.
Number three, there's going to be talk.
And I don't agree with this talk.
But you're going to hear a sports personality be mentioned in a political campaign for 2008.
I would not be completely surprised if Stephen A. Smith is being regarded as a potential candidate in 2020.
Okay.
He was asked about it on The View just this last week.
You're watching The View?
No, the 4U tab on Twitter.
Okay.
I had to mute a lot of words.
Oh, I know you did.
I know you did.
But I just get the sense that we are going to be in a run here of atypical candidates.
And I think that Stephen A has ventured into political commentary more than the last six months that he has probably in his entire life.
And I don't think the view just brought that up just for blank and giggles.
Okay.
So that's number three.
And number four is, call me not surprised when the text.
Axons beat the Cowboys by double digits next week.
That it's Mike McCarthy's last game as the coach of the Cowboys.
Oh, Mike McCarthy fired.
I think it's Jerry Jones is going to say, here's how it's going to work.
It's not Jerry Jones' fault that Dak Prescott got hurt.
It's not Jerry, it's, you hate to blame the coach for everything.
But we need a change in philosophy.
We've got to readjust things and they can't fire myself and the season's lost.
and the commanders are great and the Eagles are great.
Might as well find out if I got somebody in our system
that I'd be worthy of replacing as I'm going to get rid of Mike McCarthy anyway.
So to have a Monday night home game in front of your cross-state rival,
get your ass kicked in front of 100,000 people,
I would not be shocked if it's Mike McCarthy's last game as a Cowboys coach next Monday.
See, your take is that you wouldn't be shocked or that is going to happen?
No, it wouldn't be shocked.
Well, I guess nobody would be shocked.
would they? No, I think there would be some people
like, no, Jerry doesn't fire coach
in midseason. This is again going
atypical of what he does. Okay.
But if you want me to further clarify,
I'll say, yeah, they should
fire Mike McCarthy. It should be fired.
If they lose a
relatively easy Texans win,
if it's a game, it goes on the final gun
or it's a field goal game kind of thing,
but if they lose by 10 points or more, which I believe
they're going to lose this week, bye.
Okay. I think they should let go
to Mike McCarthy. So these are my four takes.
Chiefs are going 17 and 0 this season,
much to my chagrin after thinking they weren't going to do that.
Reed Shepherd should get some playing time in the G League
that he can get more reps.
I wouldn't be surprised if Stephen A. Smith is brought up in a 2028
presidential campaign conversation.
And I'm not talking about just on a rando talk to.
I'm saying that there will be legitimately talk of
who is the outside of the box candidate.
That'll be the guy.
And number four, Mike McCarthy probably should be fired
if they lose by double digits this week to the Texans.
next Monday night. Those are the four. Which one am I telling you the truth?
Connor, how are we feeling? I feel kind of confident with one of the four already.
I'm ready to throw out one and three. I am as well. I believe he's Matt said something about
he's going undefeated in a past. He did it a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, I did. And I'm changing
my mind. I'm saying that you're changing the mind from faking changes his mind. He's back on and
changes his mind from the mind. Correct. Actually, everything you said was completely accurate.
And then Stephen A. Smith, he's not ready for a way.
There's not right. There's no way.
I don't think he believes four about Mike McCarthy should be fine.
I don't think the Cowboys are going to do that.
And I mean, reach up here to the G League's not a bad idea.
Cam Wittmore went down there and dropped 28.
So maybe it's good for Shepard to do that.
I have bad news for you.
We're 100% on the same page.
Okay, well, that's fine.
I'm going with two as well.
All right.
Chiefs aren't going 17 or no.
I'm sorry.
You're just playing with faith there on that bed.
I mean, they're, man, the Chief's voodoo magic.
The Taylor Swift curse.
The Taylor Curse is real to other teams.
Stephen A. Smith is not running for office.
There are way too many skeletons in his life.
Yeah, do some vetting with Stephen A.
That would take about a minute and a half, I think.
I don't think you can run either, Matt.
Guys, I feel kind of bad because I wouldn't necessarily think that Reed going
down to the G League would be the worst thing in the world.
But,
Cam Whitmore was a mid-first-round
pick. Can't Whitmore was in a
massive shooting slump.
The Rockets and Marine Chippertive.
He's played, what, how many games he played as an NBA
player? Ten. I mean,
he's staying.
I wouldn't. I think if the Texans
beat the Cowboys by more than
10 points at Mike McCarthy should be fired.
All right, we'll see. This could be another
long list, in a long list
of bad takes in this segment.
you can i need to see i want you to print these out before hand look there it is right there what
is it say number four yeah you just type that i did not just type that i can't do you don't
never believe me here's that okay why here's the reason why i put up about this mannaway football it's
the only game it's the texans it's the against the state's team america's team and you get your
askic 37 to 20 you don't press god is not there that is what is that what is that what is that
to coaches from firing, owners from firing coaches?
It's like week 11. You gotta have
interim coach for six weeks
when you're, when you, Dak Prescott is down?
The Jets have zero problem with this.
And Jerry Jones loves,
well, that's because they thought they were going to turn their season around.
How's that gone? Arizona Cardinals say hello.
That's true.
Okay.
Hmm. I think, I think if it's a close
one score game, it's okay. I think if it's a blowout
where he's embarrassed on national television
and the next day on Sports Center and the next day on all the
national TV shows, they're getting ridiculed even more.
I think there's going to be a fallout.
Now, if it's 27-24, then I think he probably stays.
Okay, I will say if they lose by 10 points, McCarthy will not be fired.
Okay.
That would just be a better take.
But this is just take.
Yeah.
It's not etching stone.
You can be right.
So you don't think the rockets are going to send Reed Shepard to the G.
I don't think they're going to.
But do you think they should?
Um.
I know that wasn't your take, but I'm just curious.
You know, not not really.
Because Cam was just shooting so.
poorly. I think Camelaine won three-pooner so far in the season before he got sent down.
I think there was some defensive lapses. I think it was kind of a get down there and get your mojo back.
Reed's not looking good and comfortable out there though.
But I think Reed's getting a little bit more comfortable. It's just to have to come with playing time.
So right now I would say, and again, I'm more than able to amend this, I would say right now the best way for Reed to let the game slow down is by getting in the game and letting it slow down naturally.
Okay.
Because I don't think G League makes the game slower.
Right?
What do you think the role of G league is?
The role of, yeah, to get some seasoning and to get better prepared, it's this, I don't know if it's, I guess, relative to Spanish or whatever.
But, I mean, it's obviously a huge step up from college.
Yeah.
It's, yeah, it's a minor league.
You get some seasoning.
Okay.
Or to fix some.
And build some confidence.
Or get the confidence back.
I think that's what Cam went worse.
I think Cam's going to be back next few days, though.
My guess.
All right.
1244, it is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-7-19.
We are done the rest of the way,
except for believe it or not,
which is coming up at 150.
Today's topic happens to be.
Who you're talking to me?
Yeah, I was going to say,
we've kind of done this for a long time.
Yeah, well, uh,
Jake Bates.
Ooh.
Could you...
Does he have a Wiki page?
No, I mean, Jake Bates sold bricks.
Believe it.
I'm not doing Jake Bates.
Screw Jake Bates.
I don't like Jake Bates at all.
Jared Goff threw an interception to this person yesterday, believe it or not.
All 10 teams that won with five interceptions?
Oh, God.
713-212-5-7-90.
7-13-212-5-7-90.

Matt Thomas.
You are now tuned in to Sports Talk 790.
man.
Unifortunate musical, not tribute, but we will have to replay those sad highlights from the Detroit game coming up the top of the hour.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
713-212-5-790.
Lines are open.
We just had a bunch of folks drops.
If you want to get in, now you can do so at 7-13-212-5-7-90.
So I had the Texans like going 11 and 6 losing.
all the games they should lose to, which is Baltimore and Kansas City, and winning all the games they should, which put them at five and two the rest of the way.
You think four and three, you're thinking one of those five could be a slip-ups.
That seems fair.
I mean, I'm being a little presumptuous by saying that they're going to win every one of the games they should win.
CNFL, Jaguars were a stupid penalty away from possibly beating the Vikings of all teams.
Yeah, that's true.
Well, the Titans weren't really close to the Chargers.
they got destroyed by the lions.
They did beat the Patriots.
I just feel like this team is not good enough to the level where I can say I can guarantee wins against bad teams.
Okay.
Because they've been squeaking it out against bad teams.
Take your first sentence and stop right there.
They're not good enough.
So let me ask you, how do you in the towards the back half of the season become good enough?
You become good enough by protecting better, getting more this offensive line.
You've got one game with them.
Is it schematics or is it physical?
physicality that's getting beat.
I think it's mostly schematics.
It was a lot of physicality with Kenyon Green, unfortunately.
I mean, in Shaq Mason, unfortunately,
what's the name of that defensive tackle for the Lions?
It's really, really good.
He was beating up on him.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
He can get beat by tough...
Well, it was Campbell, too, the linebacker.
Alie McNeil.
Yeah.
Aline McNeil was...
I mean, Lee McNeil is a monster.
I mean, he's one of the better defensive interior players in all football.
So, yeah.
He was playing D-Line.
for them too. He's going to get a lot of problems. Yeah, DJ Reeder a little bit.
Texan great. Texan's legend, DJ Reeder.
You've also gotten beat up by DeForest Buckner. I mean, but you're also going to play teams with good interior players in the playoffs. So it is what it is. So they do have to get better.
I would say the communication and the schematics and without like looking back and watching the whole game over again or anything, it seemed better.
yesterday, certainly that it was.
I mean, the bar was extremely low, right, with the Jets game.
They were all over the place.
There was constant pressure and just blown blocks and bad communication.
And unfortunately, Kenyon Green getting destroyed.
I think that can get better.
I think getting Nico Collins back makes you better.
But also, this team is teetering on an edge to me where if you do lose
Nico Collins again, if you do lose Joe Mixen at any point, obviously C.J.
Stroud is a given.
We don't even need to talk about that.
But I think those two players, this team falls a
part to where you just cannot afford those losses
because you've already lost Diggs, you've already lost too much.
Pro Football Focus does their grades for Tuesday, correct?
Typically?
Generally, yes.
I wonder how Patterson and Scruggs did in their new respective positions.
I'm curious as well.
Let's go to Arlington and talk to Roger on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Our time is 1253.
713-212-5790 if you want to jump in,
7-1-3-2-2-790.
Roger, good afternoon.
You're on 790.
How you doing, guys?
Love your show, Matt.
Thank you.
Hey, you know, I'm a big Texan diehard fan.
I'm going to be in Dallas watching that game out there.
I think we're going to feast on the team.
And it's true, we're going to see McCarty get fired after that beat down.
But here's my question.
I saw, you know, does all this go on the players as far as, you know, C.J. Stroud and all this.
Because it's a scheme game.
You have to build a scheme to win games, correct?
Which are your coaches?
Yeah.
I mean, that makes sense.
Yeah, I get it.
Okay.
So, yesterday, I saw a play.
I don't know who made the decision.
I'm pretty sure that it had to do with our coach.
It was a fourth in nine or a fourth and four, which was laid into the game.
And then they put our Fairborn out there to make the field go, correct?
Well, it was, yeah, to get the lead at a long field goal attempt that probably the Texans,
not probably. The Texans went conservative offensively
knowing that our guy can kick 60-yard field
goals or thereabouts pretty easily.
Exactly. Exactly.
But I'm not a coach.
Thank God, because there's a lot of pressure right now.
But as I was looking into the game,
we were throwing a lot of short outlets
and they had the defense stacked.
So my thing is, I think they should have gone
knowing that Fairborn had already missed a field goal.
Does that make sense?
Try that one more time.
Fairborn had already missed a field goal, correct?
Yes.
I think they should have gone for it there and then and sealed the game.
The only kick he missed was the last one.
No, no, no. Yeah, he made everything else he made.
Plus he made a 50-yarder before the, earlier in the game.
He made a 56-yarder.
Yeah, Ron, no, you knew that Kami has made those before in the past.
I mean, he's had a plethora of 50-yard field goals.
As a matter of fact, he's bailed the Texans on a multiple cages.
because it was 50 plus.
So I understand.
I know how they set it up.
They set it up for him to kick the long one.
He's 11 of 14 this year 50 plus.
Pretty good.
Unfortunately, he missed that one.
It's a 58-yarder.
Their guy made the 58-yarder and a 52-yarder to win the game.
Your guy missed his 58-yarder, unfortunately.
It's obviously more complicated than that,
but that's one of the ways to look at it and why you took the L.
Yeah, to me, anything beyond 55,
placing a tremendous amount of blame on the kicker is fools gold on that.
I think in the NFL world today, 55 in should be made.
Sounds crazy to say that because when I was growing up, 50 was like, oh my God, no.
But today's kickers are bigger, stronger, they're more athletic.
They don't have beer guts, except for Randy Bullock, obviously.
But they're supposed to make those.
But 55 plus, I don't know how the weather was.
conducive for it, but that doesn't really matter.
That's a kick that he's made a lot so far in his 10-F Texan's career,
but to assume that he can make it every single time is tough.
But then that damn Tomball storyline kicked in.
Did it not late in the game?
I don't want to talk about it.
You want to hear about it?
No, I don't want to hear about it.
We'll do it next. 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Final hour of the Math-Tomba show with Believe it or not at 150.
I want to hear from you guys.
I need to hear, and you ladies as well, tell me, expectations, have you finally tempered them?
And as somebody texted me earlier today, a very simple question, sports RV, is the Texans honeymoon over?
Honeymoon still on?
The thought of a long vacation in perhaps New Orleans on Super Sunday?
Or are you in one, two, three, Cancun in early January?
Or are we bickering about who forgot to bring the sunscreen?
713-212-5-7-90 is the Texans honeymoon over.
You know what's on over is $1 chicken tenders today at Big City Wings.
13 Houston area locations, delicious wings, amazing sandwiches, awesome drink specials.
They have what they call Big Brew specials that are $5.50 for 34 ounces of delicious brew.
That's right, big brew specials and $1 chicken tenders at any of the 13 Big City Wing locations.
Now, if you want a domestic big brew, $4.50.
The premium big brews are $5.50.
That starts at 3 o'clock today.
Minimum of five tenders as well for five bucks.
You get that with a couple of sides.
Maybe some egg rolls that are stuffed with jalapinos and guacamole.
Delicious.
You can also get some amazing desserts.
They've got fried cheese blocks that are terrific as well.
Great food, great prices, and a place to watch Monday night football and the Rockets,
all in one locale at Big Sede.
Wings. Big Brew specials and $1 chicken tenders at Big City Wings and Big City Wings.com.
Lunch timers. This is the Matt Thomas show.
We're not going to get it all at one chunk here. So just one at a time. We'll do that.
We'll play this out until we get two minutes up in the fourth quarter before we turn on.
But we'll do it.
He said it. They had to get takeaways and they do right out of the gate.
First and goal, Detroit, trying to get them.
Back in it with the end zone.
Touchdown, Detroit.
From the nine, St. Brown on the edge, got pluggers.
Alman Ross, St. Brown.
Touchdown, Detroit.
Light.
Kick there.
Earned the job at the line.
Texans, offense, Rossi in the second half was as cold as ice.
I think zero points qualifies as cold as ice.
By the way, Forner?
All right.
Do it, do it.
Do it, do it, run to the discography.
Underrated.
to run the discography.
Or properly rated.
Oh, I didn't know we were seriously going to do this.
We're going to have to, unfortunately.
All right, fine.
I would say right now it's highly rated as one of the great rock bands of the 70s.
That's the bar right now.
Okay, you just want their single hits, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Feels like the first time, top 10.
Cold as Ice, top 10.
Hot blooded, number three, double vision, number two.
Dirty White Boy hit number 12 in 1979.
I'm not familiar with that one.
Blue Morning, Blue, Blue.
day, 15, head games, 14,
urgent, number four,
waiting for a girl like you, number two.
I want to know what love is number one.
I'd be underrated, Matthew.
Say you will,
top 10? All right, there,
first of all, underrated
because I don't have, I think I've got one
foreigner song on my phone, which means I've
underrated them.
Eight top ten hits.
That's more than enough for a casino
and or a run at Cynthia Woods.
That's pretty good. I'm, you know,
what, maybe they're underrated.
Yeah, you and I agree.
A tinge, not a way overrated, but a tinge.
Houston Texans, overrated, underrated, or properly rated?
Well, if you're talking to Darlene, she doesn't even know how any of the players' names are,
so she can't give you an answer.
But she overrates them.
She's overrating them.
I like my question better.
Is the Texans honeymoon over?
Is the reality is that we thought, we being those of you that are considering yourself,
big fans or and or Battle Red Ross
that you thought, you know what,
one game swing here or there,
win a game, you're not supposed to win,
be different than you were a year ago,
and you can go to Baltimore, you can go to Kansas City,
and you can go knock them off.
I don't think anybody within the sound of my voice right now
believes the team can jump on a plane,
go to either one of those two teams,
or for that matter, they came to our building,
NRG, and think the Texans would be favored
and or win the football game.
I don't think they're going to be favored.
I'm going to say you get Nico Collins back,
you give this newly reconfigured offensive line a couple of weeks of cohesion,
and I think they can beat anybody.
Well, see, the problem is here's the, and I'm not saying it's false hope,
because you have to play your best every week.
You can't just say we got a dog crap opponent coming in.
But the reality is the Texan schedule is significantly softer in the next four to five weeks.
I think that's the perfect time, the perfect time.
But is it false confidence?
Grugs and Jared Patterson as your center and juice Grugs as your left guard.
I don't know if it's gay.
We're not to see how the games play out.
Yeah.
Because we didn't have a whole lot of confidence.
They beat the Jaguars 24 to 20.
I was by the skin of their teeth.
They were barely beating the bears and the Colts early on.
And there was a lot of people, excuse me, there was a lot of people saying that this is a,
the worst six and two team in football history and they're not good.
So it's about how the games play out.
How are you looking on the field?
field. Are you dominating teams? Can you snuff them out and beat them by 21? Can you boat race
somebody? They need to do that. If they're winning these games against Cowboys Titans and Jaguars,
19 to 17 on last second field goals, then yeah, we're going to be concerned. And alarm bells
should continue to go off. It's about how these games look. So the question I have is, honestly,
at this point, are you like, you know what? The schedule softens up. We get Nico back. The
offensive line can work in cohesion.
Maybe there's a philosophical heart-to-heart meeting between the coaching staff and saying,
hey, we've got to be, we've got to dial some things up that are more aggressive, mainly
basically D'Amico to Bobby Sloan.
Maybe there's somebody that's whispering into Domingo's here.
Don't keep settling for 54-yard field goals.
They're just not as automatic as you think they are.
As good at kicker as Kemi Fairbairn, it's been this year.
Yeah.
I think what has been a storyline all year, kind of one of the further down the pecking order
storylines has been the lack of aggression and I think that was on full display on Sunday.
But history Ross unfortunately is repeating itself.
All these one-score games, all this second half utility, it's not just a one-off.
We've got a trend developing.
And I don't know if you can fix such a thing in the middle of the season.
I don't know.
You can, but I don't know that the tigers are going to change their stripes in the middle of the season.
And the good news is, they know it.
We played that Joe Mixen bite earlier.
He said it himself.
We are playing not to lose.
Yeah.
So what was that meeting for a couple days back then?
What was the purpose of that meeting?
That was for rallying the troops and covering the spread, baby.
Three and a half of the vines.
Let's go.
Let's walk through this here.
Your, my cohort here says, Joe Mixon got up and said,
Hey, everybody, listen to me right now.
Vegas has a three and a half point dog at home.
That's unacceptable.
We need to cover this game.
No, but we all thought, let's be honest,
we thought they were going to get their ass kicked on Sunday.
I thought by 10, yeah.
And they lost on the last second field goal.
Now, there's a lot more into that, of course,
with Jared Goff and the turnovers.
But the Texans four-steps turnovers, they were pressuring Jared Goff.
Kamari Lasseter was making great catches.
It's not like Jared Goff gifted all of those to them.
they were making plays. Now, of course, the Hill Mary one was a gift and it doesn't count, and we shouldn't be talking about that.
But the Texans defense harassed.
You made them look terrible. You made them look like old Jerongoff.
You had them shook. You had him with two minutes left. They were trying to run the ball out and get to the half.
They were running scared.
So that was a great overall defensive performance, especially in the first half.
So credit to the Texans there. Just the offense and that second half performances and the missed kick by.
Kimee Fairbairn and the bad call,
the bad no call on the pass interference
on that last drive as well.
You add it all up.
The Texans lost a close one
in the last second field goal
to the Detroit Lions
who were arguably the best team in football.
And you really take nothing away from that,
unfortunately.
Because if you would have been mono and mono
with them and I got a 15 round
heavyweight fight,
we were like, oh man, we were just,
we needed one more possession.
You had a huge lead and you gave it up.
Yeah.
And that hurts more.
And the reality is,
thanks, Texans.
A 16 point lead, you're not supposed to give up, especially at home with a rabid crowd.
By the way, Lion fans showed up.
I didn't realize Lion fan traveled so well.
Yeah, that's been a storyline for a while.
The Lions fans are, I don't know why or how.
Like, they travel.
By the way, I was in a casino on Sunday on Saturday night.
Okay.
What I always say about stereotyping of Michigan women is the case.
It just is.
What's that, Matt?
What's your stereotype of Michigan women?
I'll tell you off here.
Yeah.
113 on the Matt Toppy show.
I don't want to, you know, it is what it is.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-21-2-5-7-90.
Your question for you guys to dial in right now is,
is the Texans honeymoon over?
Are we starting to deal in the reality of this is at best,
at best, the third best team in the AFC,
and what can they do at this point of the season to change all that?
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Rain and wind is coming, cooler temperatures, certainly on the way.
You've got to keep your trees happy,
and that's why you've got to call Martin Spoonmore
over an affordable tree service at 713 699-2663.
Martin will come out with his crew.
He'll evaluate your trees and give you an estimate on what it was going to take
to make sure you can give your trees the best chance of survival during that sometimes harsh winters that we have.
If you've not had your trees, deep root fed, if you can't remember the last time you had your trees pruned and evaluated for overall health, you call 713-699-2663.
That's 713 699-2663.
Write the number down.
You may not need them today, but I guarantee in the next 30 days you're going to want to have those trees looked at.
713-699-2663 affordable tree service.
Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk 790.
We were going to try to get Gordy to come in studio at some point today, but he's still chasing Jalen Millrow.
Could you imagine tailgating?
Too soon.
For hours in Tiger Stadium.
Yes.
Game days.
there.
Yes.
Where Pat Mac if he convinces the fans to yell a sexual slur.
Hmm.
Not once but twice.
I didn't notice that.
Go look on Twitter.
You can find it.
Talking about doing things to the, okay, whatever.
The tiger?
Correct.
Oh, yeah.
That's a, it's a, it's a verb.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then Jalen Monroe is like going to the house over and over again.
They are running up and down.
Is Brian Kelly just,
at the end of the day, just a really overrated football coach.
Hmm.
I don't know enough about him.
I mean, obviously, a lot of success at Notre Dame.
Yes.
Played for national championship.
Yes.
Big money, gets to LSU, immediately puts on this thick Cajun accent
when he doesn't really have one, not from there.
So it's grinding on recruits in that little studio they had with the flashing lights.
That was weird.
Yeah.
And then losing football games.
Yeah.
With like Jaden Daniels.
And he looked like a Daron.
headlights. Garrett Nussmeyer pretty good.
Let's see. First season,
10 and 4, 10 and 3, now
6 and 3 are the
LSU tag us. Yep. I mean, I guess we
could get Gordy to assess. I'm sure he'll be extremely
objective. Oh my God. He hates
he should be locked on SEC.
He should be called, hated on Alabama
should be his website. He was at the Aggie game as well
when they lost, right? Yeah,
and sits out there for hours and
hours and has to smell all those people.
Oh, gross. Yeah, but it's
it's, you know what? It's like, it's
like that commercial with Eli Manning.
You can win the tailgate, Matt.
You never lose the tailgate.
And I'm sure LSU fan wins a tailgate almost every single time.
Absolutely.
But they were flying high.
And unfortunately, they've lost two league games.
Yep.
So out of the playoffs now?
Going to be the Tigers?
I think so.
They were 15th and they just lost again.
Yep.
I think so.
Now we've got to talk about the other school in the state of Alabama.
The Auburn basketball team,
They beat my Cougars and congratulations to them.
Sorry, Matt.
I swear to God, usually when you have fights on planes,
you usually lose the next game by like at least 10 points.
You know what, Matt?
I mean, but sometimes you get in a fight with your brother and it brings you closer together.
He can respect each other after that.
Okay, so word traveled Friday that they were, we were flying here,
they were flying on a charter from Auburn to Houston.
Yes.
and I have the flight ofware app
which I like to say what kind of planes people are flying
it was a chartered prop
plane
so it doesn't have all the creature comforts
of a prop plane
yeah
propeller
yeah there's still some of those out there
they put teams on the propeller planes
yeah
that seems extremely dangerous
I'm gonna assume that Auburn's runway
isn't huge
were they dusting crops after a while
I don't know
them
but those some of the bigger ones
probably seat 60 people on them
really
Yeah, and my guess is Auburn to Houston's probably an hour, 15 minute flight tops.
This is shocking news to me.
They got propeller jets flying that far?
Not a jet.
Propeller planes, yeah.
Wow.
Huh.
So they're up in flight.
They're 40 minutes into flight.
The flight's an hour of 15, so they've got to be at least halfway, if not further, to Houston.
And all of a sudden, everybody got on the ground's like, Auburn's coming back.
Really?
Apparently two players
They're among many were evolved in a scrape on this propeller plane
And had to go back to Auburn where the police were ready to arrest people, whatever they get
Again the details are still very sketchy about all this because everybody's kind of keeping it quiet
They go to Auburn, they land
They handle their business they get I guess they get some
They get the blood off the player's faces and stuff because apparently they were thrown
They get them stitched up
Could you imagine being on a plane?
I don't know.
No, I can't.
In a legitimate pierc six brawl breaks out in the middle of a prop plane.
On a propeller jet?
On a jet, you can kind of get like a big 737.
It feels like it makes a list.
It's still not good idea.
It happens on Spirit.
I mean, every week.
Yeah, you fly a Legion or Frontier or one of those airlines.
Yeah.
Spirit, like, you get a free, after your fifth flight, you get a free fight.
Hmm.
I like that.
But you're on a prop.
You land.
Seriously.
And everyone's like, what's going to happen?
The game is going to still be playing.
The game's going to play.
And then they get on the plane, they fly here,
and they then go to Toyota Center and beat my Houston Cougars.
I fired the squad up.
As my son said, Bruce Pearl teams always figure out a way to Bruce Pearl things.
That's true.
Let me ask you this.
If you have two players fighting on a prop,
it had to be a brawl, right?
Did somebody not want to just get up and interrupt that bad boy?
That's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm thinking it's like a brawl.
because if you're trying to break that up
and then you catch astray and then you start brawling too
I mean to turn the plane around
and I'm assuming guys that are 6, 4, 6.5
there's not a lot of wiggle room.
That's true. They must have been in each
other's seats or something. Maybe that's what happened.
Maybe somebody tried to recline their seat and then somebody
got pissed off about it.
I don't disagree with that. I'd brawl over that.
Then the other story of the
weekend is that
BYU and Utah play each other in
Salt Lake City. It was a late game.
Yes.
And Utah jumped out to a huge lead,
stayed with me on this,
and lost the game, I think, by one point.
They didn't score a single point in the second half.
That happens.
There was a sack of the BYU quarterback
around the one or two yard line,
but it was taken overturned by a holding call
on Utah's defensive back.
BYU keeps possession,
and then BYU goes on to kick the field goal to win the game.
Mark Harlan, I believe, is a gentleman's name.
is the athletic director at Utah.
He, before the press conference speaks where Kyle Woodingham, the Utah coach comes up on the podium,
Mark Harlan goes up there and rips the crap out of the Big 12 officiating crew.
He said, we were happy to join the Big 12.
But this game was stolen from us.
I looked at replay.
It was somewhat ticky-tack, but it was definitely a hold.
It looks like holding to me.
It was, yeah, every official that you see on TV,
TV said, that's a hold.
And on top of the fact, Mr. Harlan forgot to mention that his Utah used to not score a single
point in the second half.
You can't bitch about that.
So he rips the Big 12 on late Saturday night.
Yesterday, Ross, the Big 12 was like, Mark Harlan, shut your bum ass up.
We're finding your ass $40,000.
And a public reprimand.
They should have fined them more.
Now, my guess is Harlan's making a milling so that $40,000 is nothing to him.
That's something.
That's still something.
It's a Hawaiian vacation for you and three of your closest friends.
Hmm.
I just...
So the argument being that they were trying to keep BYU, the Big 12 officials were trying
to keep BYU in the playoffs.
The officials were, I think the call was BYU, the big 12 officials suck.
Ironically enough, the crew that worked that game apparently was primarily full of
ex-pack 12 officials.
Hmm.
Well, they got to land somewhere.
Isn't it weird, though?
that why wouldn't, I mean, the AD hadn't
to have a few cocktails. Now that's Salt Lake City
where they don't drink as much. Yeah. It's near beer.
And the beer is not nearly as
powerful, potent, if you would have to call it.
But you can't as an AD after
your team doesn't score a single point in the second half.
Go up there and bitch about anything.
But yet he did.
He got himself $40,000 fine.
Interesting. He apologized,
by the way. Not going to work.
Brett Yormark's like, I'm the Big 12
MF and King. You're going to get $40,000 fine.
If you do it again,
You can sit your ass off for a couple of games.
Wow.
AD bitching cannot happen.
About the officials?
You know, like you said, he had to be half drunk, minimum.
Half drunk.
He was full drunk if he was outside of the Utah?
How many sheets into the wind was he?
He was against the wind.
Okay.
He in the silver bullet band?
Yes, he had a few silver bullets.
You never know.
713-212-5-7-90.
That's your college recap for the weekend.
Jalen Millroll scores more touchdowns.
Auburn's Flight.
gets delayed because of a pier 6 brawl in the middle of 23,000 feet.
And they had a fake Mike the Tiger out on the field.
I need Gordy to explain that whole debacle.
He's busy.
He's programming stations across the country.
He's probably on in Lafayette right now.
713-212-5-790.

7-1-3-212-5-790.
Is the honeymoon era for the Texans over?
Not era, the honeymoon season.
are we just going to be
I mean we can go ahead and book it right
3.30 Saturday afternoon
Wildcard game weekend
Energy Stadium must go
It feels about right
I don't know now
because they're putting the
They're putting games on Peacock now
Okay so let's do this
Let's let's try a program real quick
before we're going to talk to our buddy Doug
By the way I watch the game on Peacock
Because look
Xfinity
Get it together
The picture quality is better
and it was closer to live on Peacock.
So I watched a game on Peacock.
You did.
It looks great.
They got Premier League action on there as well.
I like the app.
Peacock's good.
It's ever been of NBC just a streaming service.
Apparently they're hemorrhaging money with it, though.
Well, I mean, duh.
Yeah.
They're looking for mergers.
Well, I mean, Paramount Plus, the same thing with the CBS stuff.
I mean, it's just crazy.
Mm-hmm.
Oh, it's owned by Comcast, actually.
Expected losses, hopefully, to improve in 2024.
They lost $2.75 billion last year.
I wonder if it's because of the sports acquis or it was because of the operating costs or the, I mean, is the W.W.E part of that, too, I think, at some point, the money they're spending on that?
Yeah. Apparently, they've already lost $800 million, over $800 million this year as well.
So, ooh.
Remember one game used to be on 2.11 and 13.
We were just happy with that.
Oh, okay.
That's going back like 30, you know.
Okay, channel 2, channel 11 channel.
I was like February 11th.
I was going to look something up and I forgot.
Okay.
Dang it.
Sorry, it's my fault.
It is your fault.
That's my fault for talking about the peacock.
Does that have a nickname for the network?
You okay?
Excuse me?
Yeah, I'm fine.
Like when they're running around the offices.
Like if you, I remember when Warner Brothers had a TV network, they would not call it the Warner Brothers number.
They called the WB.
The WB and now it's a CW.
Yeah.
What are they, what's the nickname for the Peacock Network?
I don't know of anyone.
Okay.
The PC?
Sure.
Doug and South Padre at 136.
Hi, Doug.
Hi, guys.
How's it going?
Good.
No, it was a tough week to be both a Cougar fan and a Texan fan.
And like everybody, you know, the games get over.
You're pretty upset.
that and sleeping on it, I've kind of changed my position.
You know, when the Cougars lost Auburn, and that was a hell of the game,
I was upset with the players.
When the Texans lost the game, we should have won.
I was upset with the coaches, just like everybody else was.
And after sleeping on it, you know, against Auburn,
their best player, that low-post guy, the All-American,
Tugler was continually leaving him and running to the free throw line to double-team the guard,
and then trying to run back and guard that guy,
and it was just easy scoring.
and it was something Samson,
I mean, you can't really ever criticize
Calvin Samson, but it was an adjustment we never made
and it's why we lost.
When it comes to the Texans, everybody's on the coaches,
and I was as upset as everybody else was.
But if you think about it,
you know, that first and goal on the three
and Juistrugs has a holding call,
which killed that drive.
That should have been a touchdown.
And then the past that never made it to Tank Dell,
there was nobody in CJ's face,
and he just threw a dying quail
and it got intersubject.
if both those that happened, we would have won that game
or if even one of them would have happened
and then the coaches would have been spotted.
So I guess my take is I just,
I know the coaches are getting really, really reined
and probably they should,
but those two mistakes cost you the game,
and that's on the players, not on the coaches.
Yeah, I, thank you, Doug, for the phone call.
Good to hear your voice.
Ross, I, what's the proper balance,
and this is in all sports,
as sports fans, as broadcasters,
when do we, when do we,
When are we going to start to put more of this on the players?
The throw to, or they tend to throw to Tank Dell,
there is nothing that Bobby Slob could have possibly done
to draw up any better of a play than that play.
He was wide open by himself in the end zone.
In the end zone.
It's a great play.
Holding calls.
Illegal formations.
False starts.
I mean, the offensive line coach, which I couldn't even name him if you paid me to,
is getting the heat like three or four weeks in a row.
If your guys are underperforming, look, let's just call this as is what it is.
Titus Howard has underperformed as a first round pick.
Laramie Tunsell isn't worth the money that he's been spent on.
He's not. He's not all world. He's good, but he's not all world.
He's paid like he's a top five tackle, and he hasn't.
He's been good, like he said, but not a top five tackle.
Green.
Bust.
Scrugg's second-year player, to be determined.
Patterson, probably just a swing.
Who am I forgetting?
Who was a game that came in for Tuntler?
Jack Mason.
Blake Fisher?
Blake Fisher.
To be determined.
He's not good, but he's also a first round.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Shack Mason, good, not great.
Can get beat by the better interior players?
Probably being overpaying.
But you know what?
When you're trying to rebuild an offensive line for a team
and had not taste the playoffs in a year,
you have to overpay for guys.
But let's not hide who these people are.
Did you notice on the Sunday night football?
We had spotting internet for part of our flight.
They always put the pro football rankings.
Yes.
Did you see there were very few top ten on either side of the Texans?
Even the secondary was like, Kamari Lassar was considered just okay.
Petra was considered just, I mean, there was nobody like number six on the PFF.
Now, not that PFF does everything, but they give you some sort of gauge as comparing players of similar positions.
This is about the team that was thrown.
out there, which goes to
the general manager who creates the team.
Now, obviously,
Domingo is not bringing players here
that he doesn't like, and
that Nicosero's like, too bad you have to have him.
In fact, there was one
player that Damiko
wanted here very bad, and that's Alisa Aasarir,
and he's been fantastic. He's great.
He knew who he was and said,
get your ass here. Help me out. Now, I got
uncomfortable when Chris Collinsworth was comparing him
to Fred Warner. It's like, he's not,
on Fred Warner's planet, but also Fred Warner's
a freak of nature, but as he's out show you,
it has been very good for the Houston Texans.
And by the way, I'll tell you, there
is a Texan who is number one
in their position on pro football focus.
Who would I have to guess? If you want.
Offense or defense?
Offense.
Number one.
Not going to be CJ.
Not going to...
I'm going to go Joe Mixing.
Nico Collins.
Really?
The number one graded wide receiver
on pro football focus.
Good hands, good separation, good speed,
good yards after catch. That makes good sense.
And you're going to get them back, and you're going to be better.
Do you think it was kind of wonky how things turned out this weekend with
not only did he practice Friday?
Yeah, what was that?
It was a little weird.
It was like gamesmanship stuff?
It could have been.
Why did they activate him?
Because I was ready to put him in my fantasy lineup.
Why did they activate him?
Because Saturday, everyone's like, oh, he's off the list, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And then Sunday morning we wake up and he's like he's been considered inactive.
Yeah.
I think it's 100% gamesmanship.
Or maybe they thought he was close and then they were like, you know what, let's give it another week.
I don't know.
That's a question for them.
And he'll speak tomorrow, I think, because they're taking Wednesday off.
Maybe they were trying to confuse Nimitz legend, Aaron Glenn.
By the way, Aaron Glenn.
Who's the next head coach of those coordinators?
Both of them.
Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, I think, are going to.
they're going to get interviews. Ben Johnson, I think, did get interviews.
Do you remember, I'm guarantee you. We can go back and look at the air checks.
People were like, please, Bobby, say. I was happy.
Stay one more. You're here. Bobby, please stay.
And I think I defended him more than most. I think he's a good coach.
I think he's good, too. I didn't think he would be seriously considered.
I did say in a gut feeling that he would be gone at the end of this year.
I was thinking, for a positive reason, perhaps on a negative reason.
But I think people want him out of here.
Now, to me, again, offensive coordinator, it's what you're given.
You know what Bobby Slocke's given?
He's got one super awesome, amazing wide receiver gone.
He's got one running back who's really, really good, but not much behind that.
And he's got a subpar offensive line.
And he's got a quarterback.
I don't care if you want to disagree with me until you're blue in the face.
I think he's lost his confidence.
I think I disagree.
I think there's pressing right now for the first time in his younger NFL career.
And it's okay to press, especially with the fact that you don't trust your offensive line.
I firmly believe that C.J. Stroud does not trust his offensive line.
Ross, what is today's edition of Believe it or not?

on Sports Talk 790.
Final second segment of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Believe it or not, coming up in seconds, 713, 212, 5, 790.
Is it true?
Now, I guess I'm spoiling what we're going to say.
We have Justin Timberlake tickets to give away.
Is that true, Connor?
We need to be teasing this for like hours on this show.
Yes, this is true.
Okay, 713, 2125-790 for tickets to Justin Timberlake.
We need to start pro- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, I'm sorry, I was walking, I was talking to the bosses.
Wait, we're giving away Justin Timberlake tickets?
We need to start prolling this like every hour.
Wait, wait just a minute.
Normally do terrible bands of the 80s.
How many tickets do we have for this?
We got a pair of tickets.
Are you trying to steal some?
No, no, I don't know.
I do, I do.
Yeah.
Whoa.
So how many pairs do we have?
One for each day?
This we've got five pairs.
Okay, so the second winner of, believe or not, wins what?
$790 T-shirt.
Oh, Jesus.
A little drop off.
Well, I can do some Monster Jam tickets
Yeah, I'll see that because the T-shirt is, I mean,
I'm always playing for a damn t-shirt.
Just, this is really big.
One per day, we have five believe it or not this week.
So, yeah, we're going to have five winners to go see Justin.
Now, if somebody wins today, we'll carry those tickets over for tomorrow.
So it makes you want to listen.
Yes.
All right, Rockets tonight, you're going to listen to that.
I will be listening, kind of.
Who does the launch pad at 6?
That will be me.
You want to copy and cut and paste these?
Yes.
If you go ahead and photocopy that for me, that'd be great.
I'd be happy to.
630 network pre-game show, 7 o'clock tip time wax and I will have the call.
And we'll have the post-game call-in show, The Rockets Wrap.
I went in the office and I said, everybody named a wizard and they said, Sadiq Bayne.
I said, that's actually true, but he's hurt, so it doesn't really count.
That's been an active player.
That's half credit.
Jordan Poole is still there?
Jordan Poole is still there.
They have the youngest starting lineup in their franchise's history.
The average age of the starting five for the Wizards is 21.06 years old.
Do you know the spread for tonight?
game. May I guess? Go ahead.
9. 13 and a half.
Let's get that win, baby. Let's go to 7 and 4 tonight.
