This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
10-01 in H-town. Good morning, and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show with Ross from Denver.
This is Sports Talk 790.
Stroud, well protected, and there's Nico Collins, and Nico Collins will glide into the end zone, an opening drive, Texan touchdown.
Sometimes I get a good feeling, yeah.
I get a feeling that I never, never know, no, no, no, I get a good feeling, yeah.
March back in with two tight ends.
Ball snapped directly to what he marks.
Into the end zone.
What a sweet play for a touchdown, Texans.
Now I got a word for your tongue.
How many roller stones you ball?
Yeah, I got a brand new spirit.
This round.
We'll get out of it.
Throws on the move.
Testdown, Texans.
Duncan Shultz.
Oh, Gotti boy, plus me back.
I got a feeling of crap.
Oh, sometimes because I get a good feeling, yeah.
Third and gold, strong.
End zone, Krista!
Nico Collins!
Oh, sometimes I give a good feeling, yeah.
The bank for the Texans of DeMico Riots, as his quarterback said.
We have blinders on, and at the moment hanging on to their playoff spot.
But the two tight ends were outstanding today, Dalton Schultz and Trey McBride.
Yeah, you should have a good feeling.
The Cardinals suck, except for Tray McBride.
And you took advantage of it.
Buda Baker's pretty good, too.
But that's about it for Cardinal conversation.
Your Texans are putting together quite a second half of the season, have now won six consecutive games, and with Kansas City's loss yesterday, and I fully expect, because this is the essence of the show, that Jonathan Allen, our established producer, friend of the show, will be giving me endless grief, not only today.
Between 10...
Chis who?
AFC dominant?
You said they're going to run the AFC, Matt?
What happened?
I think you're misquoting me.
Okay.
Okay.
I said don't give up on them.
Oh, we'll go get the audio for that.
I know.
I've got some breaking news for you.
You can officially give up on them.
Not only are they out of the playoffs, but you've got to turn ACL for Patrick Mahomes.
But let's worry about them later.
Let's worry about what's happening with the local teams in town.
I am here in Denver, Colorado, and I wouldn't look at my weather channel app.
Is it really 37 degrees in Houston right now?
It is so cold, man.
You have no idea.
And it's windy, too, that wind chills.
Are you ready for this, Jonathan?
It is warmer here in Denver, significantly warmer than it is in Houston right now.
What is over there, like what, 50, 60?
Well, it's not 60.
Let me tell you what it is right now.
it is 43 degrees here with no wind.
Sunny skies and they're feeling pretty good about their football team, by the way.
They knocked off the Broncos or the Green Bay Packers here yesterday.
By the way, Denver's downtown, we had dinner last night.
I mean, thousands and thousands of Green Bay Packer fans, those people can travel.
I mean, I know you're traveling Texans folks think you can do it
And maybe you do because I don't obviously travel on the road in the same cities the Texans are playing in
But damn, I mean, I couldn't go two feet without a packer gear
And they lost
But again, that's their issue
What is of most importance today is that Ross is off all this week
I would say a well-deserved vacation
It's relative
I mean, you know what he brings the show
Really faux takes about
terrible food
and terrible opinions about
metrics and terrible
decisions made by Kansas City Chiefs Head
Coaches. I've got this
week to cleanse the show and bring my
perspective of things. I know he's
not listening so I can say these things.
We're going to have a couple of guests throughout the
course of the week. Chris Gordid
is going to hang out with us for a couple of hours
on tomorrow and on Friday.
We've got Channel Room's going to come in
for a couple of hours on Wednesday and Thursday.
We'll have our normal guests. But today,
it's you it's Jonathan and it's me so like we used to do back in the old school days when
there was only one way to communicate it was sports radio to discuss your football team or
good and bad today is an opportunity for you to come on in and be a part of the program if
you would like to do so and you know what I always have a little special affinity for my
10 o'clockers I truly you know honestly in the four hours of the show I love you 10 o'clockers
more than anybody else because
just check in
and make sure you're out there.
713-212-5-7-90 is how you reach a show today
if you want to chime in on the conversation.
7-13-212-5-7-90 as the Texans
did not allow the Cardinals to
pull off a surprise, trap game,
worry about the spread, hell,
by the time you sat down and relaxed it was already 7-0
in favor of the Texans
in that long touchdown pass.
What was good?
C.J. Stroud.
What was excellent, Nico Collins.
What was really good, Kymi Fairbaring, knocking down field goals.
What still has to me worked on?
Red zone still.
Always give me an issue.
Maybe it'll always be an issue for the team.
Texans defense was really good yesterday,
except for the fact they couldn't stop Trey McBride.
And Tremich Bride is an elite tie-in.
So that's going to happen.
and frankly, McBride catching everything that was thrown to him by Jacoby Percette, noted Texans killer,
and you still won the game by 20 points, and frankly, it wasn't even as close to the score would indicate.
I mean, Peret was pretty good, 27 of 40 for 249, pass the rating was nearly 100, but CJ straight out performed him.
CJ was really good, 2229 for 263 touchdowns, and I believe, and I would think you guys would believe me as well,
that our quarterback, your quarterback, America's quarterback,
got his mojo back yesterday.
22 of 29 for 260, got sack one time, didn't throw any interceptions,
through that beautiful pass,
this Nico Collins had turned into a long touchdown earlier on,
eventually found the end zone three times.
And it's amazing to me what you can do with a running game.
Jawar Jordan.
if I would have asked you two weeks ago who Jawar Jordan is
you would have said what boy band is he in
you would have said is he one of the actors
in the latest superhero comics movies that are out
or you would have said what's op-oper is he on
or is he a influencer
you would not have said Jawar Jordan is a
running back for my Houston Texans 15 carries 101 yards the first time a Texans running back
this season ran for 100 where was that on your bingo card the answer was it's not it never was
on your bingo card but jordan was good he got 50 on one carry so if you take the one carry away
that was 14 for 51 um you know not not
awesome but who cares you got an extra running back and you needed him because woody marks kept
getting in and out of the game you didn't have nick chub available for you a good wallie is not
going to be considered a guy that you want to hand the ball up to a bunch as in the case yesterday
i'm not saying the texans have the running back situation solved but for one week against a
terrible opponent you'll take it so we'll discuss that as a show progresses now how trey mcbride
caught 13 catches or 12 catches for 134 and two touchdowns.
The Texans we've talked about before have a difficult time covering tight ends.
It is what it is.
And McBride's an elite player at his position.
As sucky as the Arizona Cardinals are,
and it's really been sucky for a long period of time.
They've had an elite.
McBride is the best player in the NFL at his position you don't know about.
And he was awesome yesterday, and you got a little glimpse of that,
and thankfully it didn't hurt you.
So we will get to a little bit of the Texans.
But again, today is your day to come on in.
at 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7-90.
I mentioned I'm here in Denver tonight.
Rockets against the Nuggets.
I'll have the broadcast for you beginning at 7.30 with the Rockets launch pad.
Tip time is 8.30 here in Denver.
As the rockets begin, the longest road trip I've ever been on,
this is my 10th year doing road games.
I don't get home until the 26th.
So today in Denver, tomorrow in Denver,
then will be New Orleans, Wednesday, Thursday.
and then Friday show will be back here in Denver
because of the quirky NBA scheduling with the in-season tournament.
So if you want to get into some rockets chatter, you may do so.
They took care of business over the weekend,
beating the Los Angeles Clippers in a game on Thursday night.
So we've got not a whole lot of rockets to get to because they haven't played a whole lot,
but if you want to chime in the rockets, you know I'm always keen for that.
Philly Rivers started yesterday for the Indianapolis Colts
and almost got him a victory.
The stats were not super impressive,
but by no means that he hurt his team.
He would be better than anything else they were thrown out there.
44 years old, give the guy props,
threw a touchdown pass,
and nearly helped the Colts beat the Seattle Seahawks.
Seahawks got a late field goal to win that contest.
Speaking of the AFC playoff race,
it's coming more into focus, is it not, gang?
And it doesn't involve the kids.
Kansas City Chiefs.
The Los Angeles Chargers went to Kansas City and beat them, held them under to 20 points yet again.
A late, you had Pat Mahomes get hurt, Garner Minchew and his long hair, got on the field,
throws an interception that was a pass intended for Travis Kelsey late, and the Kansas City Chiefs
are not going to playoffs.
What are we going to do with ourselves?
Because I think the lowest of lowest hanging fruit has been, oh, the Chiefs are in the AFC,
nobody else has a chance.
They were saying that in Buffalo for a long period of time.
They've been saying it in Baltimore for a long period of time,
and they certainly have been saying in here in Houston for a long period of time.
They're done.
Who in the hell is going to win the AFC?
I'm here in Denver.
They beat the Packers yesterday late.
They got a huge day from Bo Nix.
They're feeling really good about themselves.
Jacksonville destroyed the Jets yesterday.
They're now in double-digit wins.
They're feeling really good about themselves.
I don't know how the Patriots feel like, you know what?
We were due for a loss after winning 10 consecutive games.
But I can tell you, Buffalo Bill's fans feeling pretty good.
They went to New England and won that game as Josh Allen had a huge day.
This AFC is a complete coin flip, multiple coin flips.
And I got good news for you, Texans fans.
Your team is in the mix.
If this defense shows up for the next seven weeks, you got just as good a chance as anybody else in the AFC
to win the whole damn thing.
And I don't remember saying that in these parts.
I'll throw it at you.
When's the last time we've ever said that?
The Texans have as good a chance as anybody else to win the AFC.
What was it when they won their first AFC South championship, maybe?
I'm talking like 2011?
Because every time the Texans play at 3.30 on a Saturday, that's for a reason.
A, nobody follows them nationally.
and B, nobody thinks they're going to go deep in the playoffs.
I mean, we've got to, we're going to just be honest.
This is a show about honesty.
This isn't about, you know, pumping things up that artificially don't need to be pumped up.
Your team's got a shot.
It does.
Now, Denver played it really well yesterday.
Buffalo, huge win for them at New England.
Jacksonville is playing probably its best football in a while.
And actually, I actually was watching some sports center over the last night.
And they were actually talking about how well Trevor Lawrence has played.
This bad boy is wide open.
We'll get to that on the show today.
The Heisman Trophy presentation was over the weekend.
Fernando Mendoza of Indiana won it.
Diego Pavia, the second place finisher.
Did he act like a little B?
We'll talk about that.
I also want to go back on the Texans.
Is your faith on C.J. Stroud restored.
We'll get to that.
And obviously, going without saying a lot of events in our world, the last 24 hours have startled me personally, I'm sure many of you as well.
The tragic shootings in Australia, closer to home a little bit, the shootings at Brown University in Providence, where my daughter is going to be going to school next year at the University of Rhode Island, which is not far from Providence.
but that brown university community
and University of Rhode Island are very tight
because they're big rivals and they're only
about 25 minutes apart from each other
so I've been thinking a lot about that
and then getting to the hotel and having
dinner last night and then hearing about the tragic
murders frankly
of Rob Reiner and his wife
look I didn't follow Rob Reiner for his politics
and I don't know I'm running late here but
I'm doing a monologue here
I didn't follow Rob Reiner for his politics
I followed Rob Reiner for his comedic talents
and his directorial expertise.
Some of the great movies of the last 50 years
Rob Reiner was in charge of.
One of my favorite TV shows of all time.
Groundbreaking television with all in the family.
He was on it.
And I used to watch as a kid because I used to watch reruns
when I was a kid.
Just completely, and I'm sure I'm speaking for many of you,
devastated to hear of his passing and his wife's passing.
And if you've not heard one of his sons,
has been taken into custody, which is unfortunate, but a very, very tragic situation.
And then we also lost one of the TV icons in Houston, Dave Ward,
and half of today's, believe it or not, will be about honoring Dave Ward as he passed away.
Also, on a brighter note, Dick Van Dyke, one of the great entertainers of all time,
celebrated his 100th birthday over the weekend.
So we're going to split up, believe it or not, today, between Dick Van Dyke, Dave Ward.
It's the bat-topic show with Ross.
Ross is off this week.
I'm here at Denver.
Come on, hang out with me.
I won't bite.
If I did, I have 1,000 miles away, what are you going to do?
7-13-212-5-7-90.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
It is your opportunity to celebrate the Texans win.
It is your opportunity to tell me that C.J. Stroud has got his mojo back.
It's your opportunity to tell me that, Matt, I had no idea who the hell Gerard Jordan was.
It's okay.
You're not the only one.
15 carries for 101.
That's pretty good.
Cardle's terrible.
Guess what?
It's going to be better next week because the Raiders super suck.
They got, well, they were shut out yesterday in Philadelphia against Eagles.
So let's put it straight.
The Raiders are terrible.
They went to Philadelphia and got their brains beat out.
They flew all the way back and they're going to jump on a plane again this weekend.
And they come to play the Texans on Sunday?
Oh, my gosh.
How good is that?
713-212-5-7-90.
7-1-3-2-1-2-5-7.
We'll hear from Nabico Ryan's coming up today at about 1115.
We have to tell the truth today at 1230,
and we're going to give you guys an opportunity to win some prizes to tell the truth.
I have four truths, three of them, I believe, one I do not.
So you'll have to figure that out coming up at 1230 today.
By the way, shout out to SFA, Jonathan giving it a professional effort in their game against Montana.
You know, see, are you being sarcastic?
Are you being genuine?
What do you think?
You know me from the last night.
No, I feel like they played all right.
I thought they had, you know, had some good drives in there.
Did you watch the game?
Yes, I watched the game until we were down, until third quarter.
Let's say that.
So you gave up just like the team did, basically.
No, no, no, no, no.
You know, no, no.
My girl wanted to watch something else.
You know the deal.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Does she not realize that your alma mater?
That's a school that used to call home?
She graduated there, too.
I mean, it was, you know, it got to a point.
Here is.
Yeah, here is the worst part of this whole conversation
before you go on the phones.
You change from an SFA playoff game to what?
She wanted to watch the Love Island, Australia.
You know, I couldn't say, couldn't say no.
I was talking about the TV the whole day.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I would ask all of you men, now, ladies, you won't do this.
But if you'd like to call and rip Jonathan a new one
for dumping his team's playoff game.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
For watching Love Island Australia.
No, no, every dude.
You've been there, you have to watch the Hallmark Channel.
You've been there?
That's no different for me.
Jonathan, I despise the Hallmark Channel.
I scream at the Hallmark Channel.
I actually leave the room of the Hallmark Channel on.
But I'll be damned.
And my wife, thankfully, knows being a sports wife.
That'd be like pulling off a Astros game when they're down four.
4 to 2 to watching something on the Hallmark channel.
I got to pull your card.
I just pulled it.
Love Island, Australia?
What am I supposed to do?
No, I know what you're supposed to do.
Act like a grown-ass man.
That's our school.
Did you all meet there?
But let's be honest.
Did you see the score?
Did you watch the game?
No, of course not.
Exactly.
I just kept looking at the score.
were to thinking come on grow that league grow that
league cover the spread and the receivers
were dropping balls left and right midfield
it was it was not so you just
so you gave up on your school
no no they gave them on themselves
if they were giving it all
I would be sitting there but they gave up on themselves man
I don't know it was a fun
it was fun of watching it's good for the program though
that's why he's saying that's what he's saying
head coach is staying he's justifying
love Island all story because his receivers were
dropping their balls no no happy
happy girl man happy girl
Koso on 790.
Richard Chiliken question today, Koso.
How are you?
How are you?
I would rip on Johns
in the four dishes alma mater, but
I mean, have you tried watching SFA football?
It's like on par with watching
Rice football, and
it's a great school.
I mean, my mom was
to SFA. She was a teacher for 40 years,
so, I mean, it's an awesome school,
but I don't know, man.
I'd probably watch Love Island over SFA
football.
But what I was calling about was
Matt, do you think we're going to get Tari back tonight?
Well, they're going to go to shoot around here in about an hour from now,
and I think we'll get a better indication, if not at noon your time or 1 o'clock, your time,
more like around 536 o'clock.
So, I don't know.
It's definitely a possibility.
It depends on how he felt yesterday, getting on the plane and coming up here,
and what he's going to feel like working out this morning.
Okay.
Yeah, and I assume DFS is out until January.
Is that correct?
Yeah, I don't, yeah, he will not, I don't think he'll play until, you know, maybe a couple, you know, hopefully a couple weeks.
But he is ramping up his workouts.
He is partaking more practices than he has before.
Okay.
Well, I appreciate us wanting to get that in and have fun at the dispensary shops today.
All right, Maddie.
You don't know that I'm going there, Koso.
You don't.
I go every time.
It's fine.
It's cool.
Do you like the macaroons?
Just asking for a friend.
I like it all
All right, thank you, Casey.
Good starts
to the Monday. I like this.
You think it is? Okay, good.
Can I tell you about the, you know what a macaroni is, don't you?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
How would you describe it?
Is it like a cookie with a coconut topping on it, basically?
If I were to describe it, no one had it,
I would be like it's a flavorful gram cracker with the texture, I guess, you know, almost.
Let me see, let me see, because I'm going to
give you, I'm going to give you a very funny story.
Okay.
And I'm not going to tell you who was at the dinner party, by the way.
Let me tell you what a definition of a macaroon is.
It is a chewy, often coconut-based cookie.
Yeah, I was right.
It's got coconut on it.
So, we're at dinner, and we're talking about words we don't like.
Uh-oh.
And, you know, the word I used is, I don't like the word moist.
I've told you about that before.
Right, right, right, right.
so you think of words that you don't like
and you don't hear them very often
well one of the people at the dinner party
and I will not mention who was at this part
said I don't like the word macaroon
now
okay
it kind of caught me off guard
it caught me off guard
because
it's not an offensive word
it describes a type of cooking.
Now, you may not like macaroons because you may not be pro-cocoanut.
But how does somebody hate the word macaroon?
These are things I want you to ponder today.
The third person at our dinner party had a word that he hated,
and I can't mention it on the air.
It's a word you don't hear very often.
it's a bodily function
but it was so offensive
that I can't even mention it on this major market show
so I won't
a bodily function
yeah
I'll tell you off here
because there's no chance I can tell you on there
do I want to know
no I mean you can actually go without knowing if you don't want to know
I don't know I don't know I don't think you want to know
yeah I don't think you want to know either
I think you know this three phases of football
you know we're playing together I think you know
offensively you know we're getting better every week
getting hot I mean we're getting hot at the right time
We're training up, you know, towards December, going into January.
You know, we ought to keep this going.
You know, it's going to be one game at a time mentality, you know, one play at a time mentality.
You know, then we'll look at by the end of the year and see where we're at.
Well, where you're at is you're very close to capturing a playoff spot.
That is C.J. Stroud, 7th seed right now in the AFC.
Jacksonville has a tough game at Denver this week.
the Texans do not. They've got a home
game for the Raiders.
I was, and maybe because I'm a dweeb,
well, you could probably say that.
Regardless if I do this or not. I think
it's going to go four to five tiebreakers
to determine who
wins the AFC South.
Because think about this.
Your head-to-head record's going to be about the same.
Well, it will be because you've split.
I think they're going to have the same record within the division.
I think they're going to have the same
record within
their
common opponents.
I think they're going to have the same record
within the conference.
It might come down
to margin of victory
if I read that right
because I mean, again, I was bored yesterday.
The Texans may or may not
win the AFC South
with a similar record
and may lose it because of how bad
they beat opponents or maybe
how well they beat opponents.
That's what.
why yesterday's 20-point win was beneficial, and that's why they need to absolutely crush
the Las Vegas Raiders this week. Don't even make it a ballgame.
713-212-5-7-90, all three phases. As CJ said, we're working well. Texans get the
win. LV. this week at the Chargers the following Saturday, and then closing out the year
against the Colts. What will the Colts be playing for? I don't know. It feels like to me the
seven spots are just about settled in the
AMC, but I'm wrong because there's still
about nine teams, they're 10 teams eligible to make
the playoffs. Let's go to the phone
to talk to Isaac at 1037 of the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Isaac, good morning
to you. Thanks for waiting.
Good morning, Matt. Thanks for taking my call.
Hello, Jonathan.
I got two things, two quick
things. One, I'm one of the
only probably
a handful of people that are listening
to you right now that actually do know
who George Jordan was
I'm one of those weirdos
that watch even the preseason
games so last preseason I saw him
he was doing real good
and I think
they just you know he took
the pick the most out of his opportunity
this yesterday
and you know hopefully
they get more reps next week
give Woody Mark some rest
and the second thing I want to say
the funniest thing about the Chiefs
is that
Chris Jones, the defensive and or defensive tackle for the Chiefs.
I don't know if you saw it, but on one of his postgame,
in the postgame conference or whatever, whenever they ask them questions,
he said that they still had a fighting chance,
even though they were already knocked out of the postseason contention.
So he's not addicted in standings like I am, is what you're trying to tell me.
Yeah, yeah, he's not addicted like us.
Well, Isaac, first of all, I want to give yourself a pat on the back for knowing who Jordan was before this week's game.
So good for you on that.
Number two, the Chiefs are done.
Number three, what are the Chiefs going to be like next year?
Not that I want to spend a whole lot of time thinking about it, but are we for sure that Pat Mahomes will be ready for the start of next season?
Those ACL injuries are pretty tough injuries to overcome.
Yep.
Let them worry about that.
Okay.
Isaac, thank you for the phone call.
Appreciate it.
Now, you live in the...
I think he said on the screen,
he lived in the Valley.
I think the Valley is full of cowboy fans.
No, it is.
You see cowboy flags everywhere.
I don't know why.
That's weird.
And by the way, they lost last night, too.
Are we ready to make
the Houston Texans,
the Lone Star State's team?
I mean, it's never going to happen.
But who has a more distinguished run
the last 15 years?
The Texans are the Cowboys.
I don't think it's even close.
Now, we had some down times that used to be O'Brien era
were particularly stout, although O'Brien lived the team in the playoffs.
But man, and guess what I did?
I did this intentionally.
Just to see what first take was going to do,
because I'm in my hotel room here in Denver.
I turn it on.
I'm thinking, what game are they going to pick?
Is their first game they're going to talk about?
The Dallas Cowboys.
If there was something I could.
do America, because I'm going to have those people listening to us all across the country
in the IHart Radio app, but obviously mostly Houstonians.
If there is something I could do, I would wish upon a sports star that we could take away
the fandom of the Dallas Cowboys.
Because think about this.
Last night they played Minnesota.
Minnesota is probably not making the playoffs.
Dallas probably isn't making the playoffs, even if they won the game yesterday.
I mean, they'd have to have a lot of things going their way.
two below average to average football teams
and that's what Sunday night football is going to give us that
any other set of teams with those two records
and those games would have been flexed out to somebody else
instead because the Dallas Cowboys have this insane fan base
they'll never get flexed out they'll never give us
think about all the great Sunday night games that could have had last night
You could have had Detroit at the Rams.
You could have had Buffalo, New England.
You could have had Green Bay, Denver.
And I'm sure CBS and Fox are not crying a tear over this.
But you know what I understand understanding is on this?
They put on below average JJ McCarthy-led Minnesota against Dak Prescott
and a defenseless Dallas Cowboys team.
What can we do?
What can we tell our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers, our old neighbors across this country, stop watching the Cowboys?
Honestly, last night, I was watching the news networks to see what was going on with what's happening at Brown in Providence, Rhode Island, and obviously the news about Rob Reiner and his wife's passing was top of mind.
I spent more time watching that because I was like, I ain't watching the damn Dallas Cowboys.
They're terrible.
They can't score.
they can't defend anybody
can't even defend Minnesota
1042 Matt Thomas show
from Denver Ross is off this week
I'll still keep his name on the marquee
the Matt Thomas Show at Ross continues
713-2-1-2-5-790
Somebody just asked me on Twitter
Hey don't forget about John Cena's last match
over the weekend
Yeah
I mean
Look
I don't watch a lot of current
WWE I'm more of a retro guy
the old school stuff 30 years ago 40 years ago
that's just because that was a wrestling I grew up with
I respect the hell out of John Cena's career
but no one should be surprised
that they decided to have John Cena lose his last match
Of all the great people
Say that again
Is that what they were upset about him typing out?
Yeah
Jonathan you know I'm here to give you
loads of information
You ready?
Speed to me
The greats always lose their last match
almost like a scripted huh
well not almost
it's definitely scripted
okay good continue on that
the reason and people are like well why would they do that
I mean don't you want your guy that you
you know give him as proper
fame and recognition for his life match
well the reality is this
if you're retiring
and you beat somebody
how are you supposed to
and the guy that you're going against isn't retiring
what does it say about that guy's future how are you supposed to sell him
think about that for a second
how do you try to sell the guy that loses the match to a legend
but everybody i mean rick flare lost his last match
Hulk Hogan lost his last match
John Sina
Steve all I mean they all everybody loses you have to be able to put
and it's just kind of a right of passage
get your get your flowers get your
claim, get your recognition, which obviously
John Cena did over the weekend,
but you're going to lose your last
match.
So that's how it goes.
Because again, if you were to
set up a match
and the guy that's retiring, who's never
going to wrestle again, allegedly,
wins the match,
then basically you're in hell because
you get this guy on the other side
who lost a match,
like, oh, okay, I'm going to use him
as a, you know, as a, you know,
yeah it's it's just not it's uh gunther one tapped him out now the only thing that's kind of creepy
about it not creepy but sad is that john seen never tapped out on anything i mean he's been pinned
before one two three but it was kind of weird that it would be a tap out of all things i mean of all
things that john seen was not known for with all the holds that were allegedly put on him he was
not known as a guy that was tapping out so good for john very funny good actor will have a
amazingly successful career, reading Honda commercials and doing TV and movies, things the
rest of his life. And he also got to have relations with Nikki Bella, which, you know, mad props
to him as well. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-790. Scott with us at 1051 on Sports
Talk 790. Scott, good morning to you. What's going on? What's going on, Matt? I wanted
to call and talk about the state of
this season for the Texans. Well, first off, I
went to, I was at the game
yesterday. Nice, nice win for the
nice win, taking care of business.
The crowd showed up well.
You know, it was kind of weird. I've never been to a game
where it almost felt like the home team
was performance so early on. Almost like
took the crowd out of it in a way.
It just never felt like it was really
a game. So, I mean, it was 17
to nothing within a matter of minutes.
But, you know, people showed
up, which I was hoping to see since we're playing
so well but I kind of wanted to like take some reflection back on this season I mean you look at
two different points in this season compared to where we are now so we we start the season
oh and three and I guess technically the season didn't necessarily feel over at that point
I mean we knew that it was going to be a very long shot at that moment to turn things around
and we were going to have to play really well and then you fast forward a few weeks and we are
three and five and we are down 29 to 10
with Davis Mills at quarterback heading into the fourth quarter of a game against Jacksonville
to go from that point to where we are now at nine and five.
And not only at nine and five, if we were to take some reflection from the beginning of
this season, this year we have gone three and oh against the Bills, Ravens, and Chiefs,
which I know the Ravens and Chiefs have had up and down seasons, but if we told ourselves
that at the beginning of the season, we would have Super Bowl aspirations, which I did
want to say on that, you know, from my personal, realistic Super Bowl realism meter, I guess
you should say for the Texans, how much of a realistic chance do I personally feel they have?
This is the highest I've personally felt about their realistic shot to get to the Super Bowl
since pre-Monday night massacre, if you remember that game against the New England Patriots.
We lost like 42 to 14 when we were 11 and 1.
Prior to that game, I felt like that team had a very legitimate shot to go to the Super Bowl,
even though that was an illusion now they had a very realistic chance to get there for about a minute and a half
when they were up 24 to nothing against the chiefs in the divisional round before they blew that but this team i think has its most legitimate path
to get to the super bowl probably ever because that 11 and one team was a mirage they actually had no shot to beat the patriots
just like the 24 to nothing game against the chiefs we really had no shot to beat them so i mean to and to think that we're having that conversation
or at least I feel that way
after the way this season started
is almost kind of confusing a little bit
you know what the ups and downs of this season
but I'm proud of the guys they did well
this is just an exciting time
we'll see how it finishes up thanks Matt
thank you for the phone call
the reality is it has been two different seasons
teams don't typically make the playoffs
when they go oh and two
teams really don't typically make the playoffs
when they go on three.
And as Scott just brought up,
you were down three scores
to the Jacksonville Jaguars
and put together a hellacious fourth quarter.
It saved your season.
It saved your vibe.
It took a lot of pressure,
probably off of Nick Casario.
It kept Cal and Hannah happy.
Y'all were happier.
and they have been bulldozing their way towards one victory after the other with that game.
The Baltimore game, to me, doesn't count.
I think we're logically thinking football fans.
That was beating up a very bad injured, injury-plagued team.
Would you have Cooper Rush playing the quarterback at that day?
That doesn't count.
The Buffalo game absolutely counts.
The Kansas City game, even though the chiefs who now are out of the playoffs,
That counts.
You went on a Sunday night in cold Kansas City and won that game.
That absolutely counts.
Beating up the Niners earlier in the year, that absolutely counts.
You've got a lot of very, very impressive wins.
There is nothing flukish about where this team is right now.
Have there been some closer games than you want?
Would you have loved to blow out Tennessee?
Of course.
Would you like to have one more offensive series against Denver?
Yes.
But the reality is this.
It's a football team that picked themselves up, didn't stare at the scoreboard,
didn't look at the trends about teams that open up the Euro and 3.
And I will give D'Amico a lot of credit in one particular thing.
Sometimes when coaches give you this speak of,
well, we only take it one game at a time,
or we only look at what's in front of us.
a lot of that is garbage a lot of that is coach speak
in my mind I believe he's being genuine about this
I really do and I think that kind of mentality
has helped this football team and oh by the way
you've got an excellent defense let's not forget that
this defense is legendary this defense
is and sometimes artificially props up the offense
but in yesterday's case
it was a really good offense
that scored when they wanted to
could have even scored more
but you could probably say that with a lot of different teams
yesterday to me was the biggest case
of don't let a subpar bad football team
think they're decent
Tampa Bay's got a problem with that
Tampa Bay if you're a Buccaneers fan today
which I'm assuming there's like three of you in Houston
that are Buccaneers fans
the last two weeks
they have seen the New Orleans Saints
come in their building and win a football game.
That's terrible.
And they saw Atlanta on a home Thursday night game
win that game.
They're feeling the opposite way.
You had trash in front of you and you didn't take it out.
The Texans took out the trash.
And good for them.
And they deserve their props for that.
Period.
End of story.
Now, do they have as good a chance as anybody to win the AFC?
Yes.
But we're going with that, and I would say this if I was doing Buffalo Sports Radio,
if I was doing Denver Sports Radio, if I was doing Jacksonville Sports Radio,
the team that you follow, the team that you love,
has just as much of a chance to win the AMC as it has to being bounce on the first round.
I know Jacksonville is feeling great.
They disposed of the god-awful jets yesterday.
But let's be honest.
If you've been Jacksonville fan, do you really think you can run the table the rest of?
the way? I don't think so. I wouldn't be in that position if I were them, because I still don't think
Trevor Lawrence is very good. I don't care for his numbers have been better the last couple weeks.
I ain't buying it.
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
The 11-03 Sports Talk 790. Believe it or not today, at 150, half about Dick Van Dyke, half about the late
Dave Ward who passed away over the weekend.
Dick Van Dyke turning 100.
Looks good. Sounds good.
I mean, if you can give me 100, Dick Van Dyke, I'd be happy with that.
I think I would be. I don't know. We'll see.
Also, we've got Monday night of football tonight.
Look, Miami, Pittsburgh, honestly, Miami needs to run the table and get some help
just that they want to stay in. Pittsburgh's fighting with Baltimore for first place
in the AFC North.
You've got the Rockets and the Nuggets tonight.
That game is on Sports Talk 790.
We'll have the game coverage beginning at 7.30
with the tip time of 830 here from the Mile High City.
713-212-5-790.
If you want to chime in, phone lines are open at 7-13-212-5-7-90.
Main story line of the day.
Obviously, we're talking about and discussing the Texans performance against the Arizona Cardinals yesterday, 40 to 20.
they win C.J. Stroud, a really effective day.
And I guess I'm going to throw a question out and would like to get your comments at 713-212-5-790.
There were a lot of people.
I would not put myself in that category.
Sometimes I put myself in things in categories.
But in this particular case, I would not.
I think there were people that were really taking an opportunity with the
good play of Davis Mills, the concussion,
and the mixed bag of work by CJ to say,
you know what, maybe CJ ain't all that.
I thought it was really unfair.
Has CJ been perfect?
No.
Has CJ progressed to the levels that you wanted to progress,
especially after his rookie season?
By and large, no.
But I don't think the term poor
and C.J. Stroud
should ever be brought up in a conversation.
They, of course, are poor throws,
but even the best quarterbacks in NFL make poor throws.
Missed opportunities, yeah.
But honestly, if you really wanted to think about it for a second,
could you say,
give me a great quarterback who has a subpar offensive line
and a non-existent running game
and say that guy is going to perform up to that?
expectations. Now, some could say, well, Joe Burrow did it, but Joe Burrow, I mean, been
off and hurt. They look terrible yesterday. Again, a lot of that is because they've got no defense,
but he's never on an offensive line. He's still been successful. So, I mean, if you wanted to
say that Joe Burrell's exception to that rule that I just gave you, okay, I could somewhat buy
that. But again, attendance is a large part of the grade, and he's missed a lot of time in his
NFL career. But I really thought, and look, we're all, until,
how to do our opinions.
And sometimes we go off with opinions that we
jump ahead of things way before we show it.
We don't let things play out because that's what sports do.
That's what sports fandom does.
And we even do it here on this show.
But I really thought it was unfair that some of the things
that were said about he just doesn't have it.
He's not that guy.
And there's a small part of all of us that say,
you know what?
We'd like for him to take that next progression.
We wanted to be the Josh.
Allen of the NFL. We'd like
him to be the really good Lamar
Jackson of the NFL. We'd like him to
have the sustained
success that's a
Matthew Stafford
has. And because
you're about to pay him like that,
not you
in theory, but the team's about to.
And that's what we've talked about. And if you listen
to any NFL show, you know that
the best teams
succeed when their quarterback
is typically on their rookie contract.
because that allows you to spend money on other positions
and not have so much tied up into one position.
Even the Kansas City Chiefs
struck a deal to make, you know,
Pat Mahomes as rich as a human league could
with a half-billion-dollar deal,
$500 million when he signed it a few years back.
But even that allowed him,
them a little bit of grace.
The NFL dollar that is being put on quarterbacks,
the Dak Prescott's of the world,
you know, the Lamar Jackson's,
Ultimately, you know, all the up-and-combers, they're all getting paid obscene amounts of money.
Now, that shouldn't be a concern to you, but it is, but roster construction is.
And if the team is ever going to really take that next step and be just a wild card or an AFC South team to a legitimate championship team,
you need to have success in all three phases of the game.
Defensively goes without saying how good this team is.
Special teams, Miami Fairbairns been good.
Tommy Towns has been pretty good.
Coverage teams, and we got a nice long run back yesterday in the game.
That feels like, for the most part, it's pretty settled nicely,
except the one kick that was blocked yesterday.
But you're looking for CJ if the team's going to put all this money in him
to take that next step.
And I thought yesterday, granted again, it was Arizona,
and granted it's a team that's mailing it in and has no interest in the playoffs
and can't get there if they wanted to,
there was no natural letdown there was no come on cj you're better than this it's you're better than
beating in there than than hanging around arizona like they are they and they should show that
again next week against los vegas because the raiders are equally woeful so i would say for all
of you that were hinting at are we doing the right thing with cj are we really going to put a lot of
money in unfortunately you're going to have to because that's what part of the business is but i thought
yesterday, not necessarily
it was a turning point, but a thought of
man, he's got his
mojo back. And he
doesn't have an great offensive line. It's a good
offensive line, but not a great one.
He only got sack one time.
The running game gave you something.
And whether it's Jordan
or it's Woody Marks or whomever else,
you're starting to get a little bit more hope.
If the Texans' offense
can stay average
the rest of the year, meaning
Nico Collins is involved
Dalton
Schultz is involved
you get some
of a running game
you got a shot
because honestly
if we were to listen to old air checks of this show
and I was able to listen to old conversations
you had with your buddies even your diehard
Texans buddies you hang out with on Sunday and go to the games with
you knew you weren't going to beat Josh Allen
Lamar Jackson
Joe Burrow
Pat Mahomes.
And some of those guys are still on the way.
But you feel as good now about this team that you're probably having a long period of time.
And isn't the crazy part of all this is, gang, you feel great.
But right now, if the playoffs were to start today, you'd be in, but you'd be the last wild card.
Isn't that crazy?
The last wild card, the number seven seed that would have to go play at New England.
things could seriously shuffle between now and the end of the regular season.
But you're in a spot where you're the seventh seed in the AFC,
not just happy to be here, not just getting in by the skin of your teeth,
but you feel like there ain't anybody in front of you can't beat.
And I don't think we felt like this in a long, long period of time.
I just don't.
You tell me when you felt as good as you have about this squad and where they are
and the way they're playing.
Johnny on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Johnny, good morning.
Yeah, you know, I think we were watching two different games
because I don't remember how many Philgos that we went for inside of the 30
because we couldn't score a touchdown yesterday.
But it reminds me of a really good quarterback we had on the team, Matt Shaw.
He was great, statistically, he did terrible in the red zone.
So, God forbid that's what's happening with this team on the offense,
but that's all I had about the performance.
yesterday and overall how it's been looking in the, I don't want to call it the red zone,
but, you know, inside the 30, you know, we're not performing as well as we should be or could be.
And the reality is this, Johnny, it's been a season-long problem.
But it has been a season.
But some of those kicks yesterday were, I mean, were of good distance.
They weren't like at the three-yard line not being able to get in.
I mean, they did get to the end zone a bunch of times yesterday.
I mean, they did score a rushing touchdown on the direct snap to what he marks.
it's it's by no means exemplary no means right it's getting a little bit better
I was just going to say you know it's a question I'm just getting that next first down right
to keep moving the ball and he's closer but we're not unable to do that so we're not getting that
next first down to stay you know to get into the red zone we're close enough right there
just in field go distance great you know but that's why I said and that's why said Johnny
mad shop you know yeah that's why I said Johnny it's an average
offense it's an average offense it's not an exemplary it's not above average it's an average
offense and the question is but when we're an average offense in 2025 get there what's that
we're judging the quarterback though and what he's been unable to do and find that receiver
it's what's hampering the progress of the offense is you know he just for some reason is holding
on to the ball too long he's not finding the open guy you know but that's where the judgment
comes into play for him in particular
as the quarterback for this team
is if you're going to be worth
the money, you know?
Well, I just don't think he's earned it right now.
I mean, but he's, but you know what?
And I've argued with Ross about this.
Johnny, thanks for the call. He's going to get it.
Because unless, I mean, do you want to go
go get a rookie quarterback? Do you want to go
made trade for another one? I mean, those are all things
that are definite possibilities.
I think a better offensive line
in Assemble Simmons of a mainstream RB1
Meaning number one running back
Is going to help this team significantly
1112 on the Matt Thomas show Ross
We're here from Demico Ryan's net
1117 on Matt Thomas show with Ross
I'm here in Denver for Rockets and Nuggets tonight
What was I going to tell you
D'emico's going to speak in a couple of minutes
Getting late word from the Packers
that let's see
oh there weren't
Christian Watson's injury
that's at least their concerns
Green Bay
in a tough spot there
after losing
their key defensive players
so we'll get to more of that
on the NFL
a little bit later on the show
but really
yeah I mean
the CJ
and look I've talked about this with
Ross before
it's going to be a tough
tough ask
for him to
get his, you know, he's got a tough agent.
David Mulligan is going to want everything that
all the elite quarterbacks are getting.
But any money the Texans
can save can be put towards other people.
But that's something for down the road.
You win a Super Bowl, no one's going to care much.
You pay the guy. You get to the Super Bowl for that matter.
No one's going to pay, care.
But if he goes out in the dud,
and look, you know, as I said
before, the Texans have just as good a chance
of running the table as they do getting bounced
out in the first round.
Let me tell you something.
The three teams are going to have home field advantage in the first round of the, in the first or second round of the playoffs.
I mean, they're winning a boatload of games for a reason.
I mean, they are doing, I mean, the standings right now, look at who's up there.
You've got Denver, 12 and 2, beat a really good Green Bay team yesterday.
New England, 11 and 3.
Just lost her for the first time in 11 weeks.
Jacksonville ain't scared.
Pittsburgh and or Baltimore
who wins the AFC North don't particularly
care.
But the Chargers with a huge
win at Kansas City. I mean, if we're going to
praise the Texas for winning
at Kansas City, got to do the same thing for the Chargers.
Buffalo goes to New England
and ends their long winning streak.
They're at 10 and 4, even though we saw
how mediocre they looked against the Texans
at home. And then you got the old
Houston Texans at 9 and 5, just
lucky enough to be in the playoffs. Isn't that
crazy. But I'll say
this. It's happening in the NFC, too.
The number seven
seed, the team that's barely in,
is
the Green Bay Packers.
They're 9, 4, and 1.
The Detroit Lions, a team
that a lot of folks thought could win the whole
NFC. They're out of the playoffs. The playoffs
began today. Dallas
still alive. Carolina, maybe one of the
hottest teams right now in the NFL.
They're still got an opportunity.
there are going to be some really pretty decent football teams not making the playoffs this year
and honestly it's just because you've just got a remember you got to remember this is a situation
where you've got a lot of talent football teams and oh by the way in 2025 the bottom end teams
super suck Arizona Vegas the Jets who else is super terrible this year I'm trying to think of
the standings here who else is awful oh the giants
Washington, New Orleans, Tennessee,
Hot Miss Cleveland.
I mean, the bottom four teams have either two or three wins.
So that's why the upper echelon is so competitive
because they were all beaten up on these second tier teams.
This will be the most anticipated playoffs
we've had at least for the Houston perspective in 10 years.
Safe to say right?
Because it felt like for the longest period of time
you were worried about the Patriots winning.
Then, you know, a long stretch of games where you were worried about the Chiefs winning every year.
I mean, Bo Nicks, they win, and they're really good.
And they put up a boatload of points yesterday.
I was here in Denver to watch the fourth quarter of that.
But they're new to this.
They lost their first playoff game last year.
I mean, is Bo...
Think about who of all the quarterbacks that are in front of the Texans and
the AFC, who scares are the most?
Honestly, anybody that's got a division lead.
Bo Nix can be human.
Drake May can be human.
Pittsburgh?
Aaron Rogers?
Now, if Lamar Jackson all of a sudden heals up in the next handful of weeks and they
go on and win the AFC North, that could be a problem.
I ain't afraid of Trevor Lawrence.
To me, now that my Kansas City pick is gone by the wayside,
I'm perhaps a little more nervous about Buffalo, but we saw how bad Buffalo's run defense is, didn't we not?
And Buffalo on the road, different football team they aren't at home, although yesterday they dispeled a lot of that by winning the game at New England.
This is, you know what, this is kind of cool.
The Texans were able to bounce back from being down 03 to get into the playoff because I'll tell you what, if the Texans didn't make the playoffs this year,
and they could still lose the rest of their games and come out and be out of them.
So here I am presuming these things.
But could you imagine how pissed off we'd be as a sports society if the one year that the Kansas City Chiefs were knocked out,
that the Texans didn't have a chance to get in there, and that there's, by the way, no superior team in the AFC.
A lot of really good teams.
But I'm telling you right now, if we're doing Buffalo Bill Sports Radio today, our mojo is back.
We, we, Buffalo, went to New England and won a game.
Denver doesn't lose anymore.
Denver, good Green Bay team coming in, wins that game.
And I'll tell you what, the winner of Jacksonville, Denver this week
when they play each other here in Denver on Sunday,
they're going to feel really good about themselves too
because they're going to be knocking off a playoff team.
Honestly, beating Arizona yesterday, no great shakes, right?
You kind of had to do it.
And thankfully, the Texas has not played down with the competition.
You're not going to get a whole lot of momentum off of beating the Raiders,
because the Raiders, hell, they may be so bad that Pete Carroll decides to retire
after the game on Sunday.
That's how bad.
I mean, they went to Philadelphia and didn't even score a point.
That's the negative about this little run is that there have been good wins.
Buffalo, Kansas City, Baltimore.
You got really one more good shot to get a chest beating kind of win,
and that's going to be in Los Angeles a couple weeks against Chargers.
Because that week 18 game against Indianapolis, it may not mean anything.
Because if you beat them and the Colts are out of the playoffs, they're not going to care about putting anybody out there.
And if you have nothing to play for because your seating is already set,
then you'll get nothing accomplished yourself except to make sure nobody gets hurt.
That's the funny thing I saw on Twitter yesterday, is there were people that were like,
can we take the week off against the Raiders?
Can we give some of our second tier guys an opportunity to get some time off or our first tier guys?
The answer is no.
You've got to go beat the Raiders.
Yeah, you got to, that's a, that's a, well, I mean, you've got to beat them early.
You got to, you got to make it 35 to three early instead of getting those guys in.
You can't make it a ball game.
Some people think NFL is like basketball too much.
You got to play, you got to win these games, starters.
You know, they didn't pay for that reason, right?
You got to get that regular season win.
I don't know.
Yeah, and the first time you start, like, when the Rockets play the Jazz,
oh, the Jazz beat, you know, beat them by 25 in the first half so you can have Jay Chantay and Jeff Green play the second half.
It doesn't work that way.
unless you force it.
Your talent is significantly more in Houston than it is in Las Vegas.
There should be no issue in beating the Raiders this week.
I think the Texans are a 14.5 point favorite.
So, yeah, the goal should be to beat them one and number two, don't look bad doing it.
Crush them.
But you'd like to be able to create that storyline?
You don't know.
Maybe Las Vegas comes in and says, hey, we look like dog crap against Philadelphia.
we've got to improve ourselves.
We've got to prove to ourselves
and save our coach's job,
if that even the case.
Or maybe you're just significantly better than there
and you beat them up so you can give you guys some time off.
But I wouldn't count on it.
That's the silliest thing you can do.
All right.
We are hoping to get the press conference underway
with, they've been going more like to 1130.
I don't know what's going on on that, but whatever.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
We have the news at noon coming up.
and at 1230 today we'll have to tell the truth where I have four sports takes I believe three of them one I don't believe and if you can figure out which one I don't believe we'll have got some nice prizes for you we also believe it or not today at 150 we also want to get into the Heisman stuff too if you caught the ceremony over the weekend I did not I did see the reaction after the loser was unhappy you did you see that was the bar the club part well I saw the Instagram video if you just that's what you're asking that's this I can't I
I can't wait to talk about that.
We have to talk about that.
I want to say that because I want to make sure you have plenty enough time to read on that.
713-212-5-790 if you want to join our conversation.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
Again, we are standing by Fort Emiko Ryan's press conference.
It is 1126, and we appreciate listening to us on a Monday on the Matt Thomas Show, Ross, here on Sports Talk 790.
Well, Texas is not providing the video feed of the...
press conference so
even when they do we'll go into that
I didn't realize Hannah had a podcast
it's called On the 50 with
Hannah McNair
huh
I did not know that
also congratulations to Toro for getting
his being in the mascot hall of fame
hmm
things you look at when you look at the
I don't ever go to the Texans website
all right
so if John that can find that feat
We'll be happy to put that up there coming up in just a few minutes.
Since we don't have it, we will be going to you at 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-90.
We've got to tell the truth coming up in one hour from now.
The news at noon in 30 minutes, and believe it or not today, at 150.
Let's see.
See, the thing is, I'm in a tough spot here because I don't want to go into something too deep
and then have to interrupt it because of if we find the feed.
What do we want to do here?
We've got the Rockets I mentioned tonight.
We talked about the AFC playoff race.
We got, oh, things are kind of quiet on the Astros front.
I just, I think there are some of you,
and I continue to get these messages from you all through emails or direct messages about
why is Dana Brown sitting on his hands?
why isn't Dana Brown
doing this, doing this, doing this?
Well, you know, get somebody else in there.
Do you all really think that Dana's really sitting on his hands
that he's just letting these,
letting these A-shelf,
a-topless guys going on from team to team to team?
Are you wanting them to overspend on Framber Valdez?
Are you wanting them to get back in the,
and convince Alex Bruegman to come back?
I don't get why everybody so cranky.
Look, there are fair criticisms to general managers of all sports,
and that would include Casera, that would include Raphael Stone,
and obviously Dana with the Astros.
But your number one guy, Hunter Brown, is locked and loaded.
You hope you're number two guy this year can be Christian Javier.
You've got a lot of other guys coming off of injury,
the hope they can bounce back.
You're in the mix with some names that are, you know,
Shane Baz has been a guy that's been talked about a little bit.
I don't think that Dana has hidden
the fact that he's willing to trade
current members of the team to go get
starting pitching. There has
been talk about Justin Verlender coming back
and Justin had a good
second half of the year and Justin obviously
has strong affinity towards Houston
and there's quite a few of you that are still Justin
Verlander fans
but I don't know.
I'm curious
do you
think he's on a vacation somewhere?
Is he in the one country?
Or is he trying to manipulate the roster for next year
and figure out what is boss says he can spend?
What is tradable commodities?
We've talked about this before.
The Astros don't have a minor league system
of anybody that's really worthy of giving up right now.
Either they're not deep enough in terms of numbers of players
or they're not ready to go yet
or the Astros want to keep these people.
so it does take time and if you've noticed in the last couple of years gang
some of these free agent moves don't come until close to spring training
I mean we're not even at the calendar turn yet
don't you think that Kyle Tucker would like to know where he's playing next year
don't you think doesn't don't you think that Justin verlander would like to know where he's playing
next year where Alex Bremer going to like to know where he's playing
Framber Valdez, it's not just the Astros just sitting and waiting back.
They just got back from the winter meetings.
Now, will there be some decisions to be made and will there be some moving around?
Yes.
And frankly, you know, the name that keeps being brought up in terms of trades is Jake Myers.
To me, I think the biggest question mark about this year's team is how are you going to decongest the infield?
because you're still, even though Eurias is gone,
even though Maricio Dubon is gone,
you still have won too many players,
and you can't,
it will not sound,
it will sound overly simplistic
to just move
ESAC priorities around from position to position to position.
That doesn't make any sense.
And I think Dana knows that.
That's too much talent for being a utility player.
Esac and priorities can start for probably 20 major league baseball teams.
provided his hamstring is healthy.
So, I mean, I get one guy in particular who just wears me out,
and I almost want to tell him, stop sending me stuff.
Because, again, besides the Dodgers, who else has been aggressive?
I mean, who else has made the seismic changes to change their baseball team around?
Now, Baltimore got a new first baseman.
Pete Alonzo, I get that.
that was a pretty significant deal dodgers added a reliever edwin dyes but you still have a lot of
megastars gang that are still looking for work and if and of how things have turned out the last
couple of years we may not get a decision until january early february so for anybody that's
just not necessarily wearing me out but with your buddies and you're talking about well if you
are doing anything my guess is they're going to do something
It's just not going to be in your timeline.
They've got to go at starting pitching.
That goes without saying.
They've got to decongest their infield.
That really, now that may not happen immediately, but it's going to happen eventually.
And then you've got to figure out what the hell is going to be that starting outfield for 2025,
even if, indeed, you do, do move Jake Myers.
So for all of you that are impatient Astro fans,
as my friend Aaron Rogers would say,
take a deep breath and relax.
Because if the superstars can't figure out
where they're playing just yet,
the mid-level players that the Astros are trying to look for
and trying to acquire,
they're certainly going to get their turn to.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-7-9-0.
Sounds like we're not going to get the press conference,
which is sad because I want to.
I hear what Domingo had to say, anything on the injury front, whatnot.
It was a strange scene as much as Woody Mark's going in out of the 10 as much as he did yesterday during the game.
Let's go to Roger on 798, Roger, good morning.
Oh, good morning, Matt.
Yeah, it's a sad weekend over the weekend of Dave Ward and Rob Liner passing.
It's just wanted to say that.
Anyway, with the Texans, man, mission accomplished.
This is something I wanted them to do, call like a glorified scrimmage.
They got there with it unscathed.
Everybody looked sharper.
Defense looked okay.
And, hey, go on to the next one and get another easy win, hopefully,
and finish the season strong and try to get a playoff push, man.
I'm so happy that these guys are finally looking like a well-rounded team again.
So onto the Astros, somebody is going under the radar very quietly.
I don't know if it's quietly, but there's a back that I would love to put in the roster.
it's a quality of bad.
This guy is always 10 pitches
minimum every time he gets to the plate.
That's Luis will rise.
I know we've got to cut it infield,
but I just, God, I'd like to somehow,
some way if Dana Brown can, you know,
work some magic, man, trying to get this guy.
He's on the cheap right now.
And it's just a bad I would like to see in that line.
That makes sense, man.
I just follow that I had, Matt.
I'm a good Monday.
But Roger, what I just say about the infield?
I know
I just do what I'm anyway
So you want to add extra players
So an infield that's already crowded to begin with
I guess the answer is yes
He wants to do that
No the asteros are in no need of infield
No
It's not going to happen
Now
I'm trying to think
Does a rise ever play in the outfield
He means it's still a free agent right now
just finished up a season with the Padres.
316 is his career batting average.
He's really good.
And he's a three-time All-Star three-time batting.
This isn't, no, this is a moot conversation.
The Astros are not looking for any in-field help.
Unless they move several players.
They move Christian Walker and they were to move Eastside Predies in two separate deals.
that's funny
that's the last thing I thought of
I know this guy's really good
I know he plays the infield
but I still want the answer to get him
no they're trying to
rid themselves on infielder
not add to it
let me go to Vince at 1141
on 7-90 Vince what do you got today
hey I hate to change the subject
but did you catch the Spurs
Oklahoma City game the other night
uh
Spurs Oklahoma City I did not do you mean
the in the in the
The semifinal game in Las Vegas?
Yes.
Now, I'm going to tell you something.
That had to be one of the best basketball games I've ever seen.
Just the intensity, the competitiveness, the plays that players were making.
It was an incredible game.
The Spurs, the coach there, he's doing an incredible job with those guys.
Wimby did not start.
He didn't play until the second quarter.
Tell the folks how he did.
He was a plus 20.
And they only won by, like, I want to say, four points.
He was a plus 20 when he was on the floor, and I think he played probably around 20 minutes.
I think he had, what, 21 points in 22 minutes, something similar to that?
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
But he was a plus 20, and the rest of the team was a minus 23.
It's just, you know, it's just incredible what he was doing out there.
And, but, you know, and one other point about that game,
DeFawn Castle, he was picked one pick after,
Reed Shepard.
And man, I love Reed, but man,
I think we missed on that one.
Well, Castle was a rookie of the year in the NBA last year.
So, you know, it's, um, Vince, here's the thing that scares me.
San Antonio's really good.
Really, really, really, really good.
And, you know, again, Wemby's got to stay healthy.
But hell, they won games without Wemby.
I mean, they're just, they're playing a lot better than,
anybody would have thought of
at this point in their career
in their development of their franchise.
They're excellent.
Yeah.
Like I said,
that coach is doing an excellent job with that squad.
So pretty,
pretty impressive.
If you get a chance,
check out some of the highlights,
some of the play,
if you get a chance,
check out some of the highlights,
some of the plays,
those shots that wouldn't be made,
it was just a phenomenal game.
And I've been watching the NBA
for a very long, long time.
I'll tell you what, too.
Dearen Fox has been really good
for them too. I mean, they're, that's a really well-rounded basketball team.
And that's, like, one other point, one other point. That was the first time that Deerran
Fox and, and Wimby played, uh, played the game together. So, you know, this year.
That comes to zero surprises. Both those guys have been hurt for periods of time.
Yeah, yeah. So just go to show you. Anyway, thanks for the time, okay.
Thank you. Nice here for me. And I'm, I don't want to give any, any faint praise to the San Antonio
Spurs, but you've got to be real with sometimes. And they're excellent. They're playing.
for the championship. They're 18 and 7.
So here we are sitting here talking
about Minnesota and Denver
and the Los Angeles Lakers
and your Rockets and Oklahoma City
and here's a little San Antonio. Hey, wait about us.
Castle, Vesel, Fox.
I mean, their first round
pick, Dylan Harper comes off the bench.
I'm sick to my stomach now.
all right help me out now i'm in a bad mood that's all i need is spurs love no not not that's a caller's fault
but damn they're good we can't have that i'm having a hard enough time living with a standard
with oklahoma city being as good as they are all right we're going to send jonathan on a chase
to sitting at the press conference at least get some of the things in during the course the show
because the things are going well you've got to listen to coach and when things are grumpy he'll you'll you know
say a few things
moving on to different stuff
but you know what things are
well we're going to play
we are the
objective home of Texans football
so in good times
we're here and in bad times
and when things are good
we're going to play it
so John that if you can keep searching it
let's get to the Heisman story
from over the weekend
because Jonathan you saw the you saw the IG video
or did you watch the whole thing
I watched like the I just saw a snippet of it
I just saw a snippet of the IG story I think
all right
so congratulations goes out
to the Heisman trophy winner.
And that's the quarterback from Indiana, Fernando Mendoza, right?
Diego Pavia was a runner-up and very successful quarterback at Vanderbilt, right?
I mean, I'm not saying it's not true at this point.
So apparently, Diego Pavia was not pleased that he didn't win.
And he went to his Instagram account, and he said,
f all the voters
and he's had to since apologize
for that
I got terrible news for you
Diego Pavia if you
if you're disappointed about
that one in the heisman imagine when your life's going to be like
at the NFL draft
when you don't get trapped in the top ten picks
What? I don't know. I don't know. It's a reputation. I mean, yeah.
Did you not see the video two of him like a bar or a section and it was like bottle girls around and you know how they have those like flashing words or like a board, electric board with like words? You can say like happy birthday or whatever. He had F Indiana on there as well while he was trying to celebrate.
now he had his bros with him too
you see that he had his offensive line away the whole time
that's crazy
I couldn't believe that
I mean don't you think first of all he's 22 23 years old
I mean he knows between right and wrong
doesn't he also know that everything that he ever does
publicly is going to be seen
I mean there is not a moment in
in pavius life at least for the next
few years that people
will see whatever he does and they're going to videotape it
or he's going to film it himself because today's children, these young adults,
are infatuated with their social media post.
What did he think was going to happen?
Don't you think somebody from like maybe the Vanderbilt Public Relations Department
who was maybe there with him and said, hey, when you lose this thing,
because you're probably not the favor, but when you lose, act with grace.
Don't go running around on Instagram, talk about F the voters.
because guess what the voters are going to do?
They're going to write stories about you.
They're not going to be speaking of you with good commentary.
You know, look, I can get it to dumb kids doing dumb mistakes.
But I'm going to tell you this right now.
Any college, or for that matter, any future agent that would train him,
and would tell him,
act normal.
Don't go out there and try to
create this narrative
that you were screwed
because you weren't screwed.
You had a spectacular season,
but there's only one winner.
And not that I was sitting there looking at the odds
and who's going to win the Heisman,
but I want to say that Fernando Pondoya
was considered the favorite.
Was he not?
He was, yeah.
Mendoza, yeah.
I mean, when he won it,
there was zero surprise to it.
so this Vanderbilt quarterback is like
F the voters
he's got another year no he's
he's the quarterback next year too right
uh well he could declare for the draft
he might have to I mean I don't know
oh my gosh
I you know what
did I mean didn't
and I'm looking at I'm reading a story about it right now
I did this morning
they're like, this is what Shador Sanders caught himself with.
His additional arrogance might have cost him draft spots.
Now, he's been given an opportunity to play in Cleveland
and has not worked out overly well,
although there's many issues with the Browns besides the quarterback position.
But what is he? Oh, my gosh.
If I was his parents, I would just be like, oh, what are you doing?
We're trying to improve your stock.
We're trying to add to your public relations value,
not decrease it and to go on again and my kids have all on instagram and my daughter you know
is going to be is going to be social active when she goes away to school but i you just can't tell
your kids enough you can't have people of authority telling them enough just act with dignity
take the l they don't even an l you were a finalist for one of the best college football players
in the country that's an honor so you didn't win it you're upset it's it was no great upset you
didn't get screwed because voters didn't watch
Vanderbilt football. You were on TV all
the time.
And I just thought, man, it was
a horrible, horrible look now.
Will he get past that?
My guess is yes.
But don't we see a trend, Jonathan,
with kids that don't learn the mistakes?
Some of these college football kids, they got a lot of yes
men and women around them and it comes
a bite of them in the butt. It's like when
Johnny Menzel was acting like an immature guy
when he was in college. He didn't really
change his stripes did he he he was supposed to be the brown savior he was he was as
immature in the pros as he was as a college football player so i feel like as a part-time host part-time
dad on this i'm like you know kids you got to learn your lesson and they'll bounce back from that
i don't know the cockiness that pavia may have today it may be something that he that sends him to
the NFL as well.
And I just thought it was a really bad look for a nice
ceremony to have that be the story.
Because no one's talking about Mendoza winning.
It's more about Pobbio.
That's a good point.
Yeah.
F all the voters.
I mean, you could not
treat a non-winning more than anything else.
It'd be like if you're playing in the college football
playoff and you lose
and telling all the fans of the team that won
F all them or F all the referee.
I mean, it's just a, it's a lousy, lousy look.
And I probably wouldn't have given the Heisman Trophy five minutes of my time on the show today.
Look, it's an award.
I wouldn't say it's lost, it's luster, but it's, I don't know, but kids transferring from school to school and leaving early.
It just doesn't have the same moxie that it used to have, especially as there's no Texas kids involved in it.
I mean, it's Indiana and Vanderbilt had two guys.
I mean, far from any of those two schools to be quarterback factories.
it just it just it was a it was an unnecessary headline that they got for all the wrong reasons
and i hope pavia learns from it but my guess is that's how he's been as a college football player
he probably isn't going to change if he tries to make it in the pros so there you go
social media again more important than acting like a uh a guy a guy in defeat should
act and that's respectful let's get to the news at noon
Good feelings coming from the Texans.
We'll hear why in a moment.
12 o'clock on Sports Talk 790.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
40 to 20.
40 to 20.
Not 20 to 16, not 2319, not 17, not 17, 13.
And yeah, Kami Fembearbearer was busy kicking field goals.
But gang, it's okay.
The Texans win streak at 6.
They're at 9 and 5 on the season.
And nothing but good things ahead.
As the Texans will make the playoffs.
Thank you very much for the fact that Daniel Jones done for the year.
Thank you very much for the fact that the Indianapolis Colts are a hot mess.
And they have been beset by injuries.
And thank you very much.
The Kansas City Chiefs don't win games are supposed to win.
Or at least home games.
That, my friends, is what makes up the news at noon.
1207, Sports Talk, 790, where yes, the Texans won 40 to 20.
How many of you knew who Joward Jordan was before yesterday's kickoff?
If you did, call and brag at 713212-5-790.
We had one person to do that earlier today.
7-1-3-2-5-7-90.
15 carries for Jordan 101 yards.
The first time the Texans running back, rush for 100.
That's excellent news.
Texans keep on winning.
Texans still holding out of the seventh spot
in the AFC
playoff chase.
A lot of that is because
frankly, everybody else is winning.
That's because Denver won yesterday.
That's because Buffalo won at New England yesterday.
That's because Jacksonville disposed
of the New York Jets yesterday.
As far as what's going on
at Domeco's press conference
that came up a few minutes ago,
defensive end tackle Mario
Edwards ruptured his peckies out for the season.
That means both he and Tim Settle on the interior defensive line
have been gone for the rest of the year.
So two significant injuries on the Texans' defensive front.
Also, Derek Stingley Jr. and Woody Marks did not finish the game yesterday,
but Texans' offensive head coach, D'Amico Ryan, says something to monitor
but should not affect Sunday's game with the Las Vegas Raiders.
the Texans at this point are a 14 and a half point favorite against the Raiders
who got shut out in Philadelphia yesterday by the Eagles.
On the NBA front, the Rockets tonight here in Denver to take on the Denver Nuggets.
We'll have the broadcast for you at 8.30.
Tari Isson right now as we speak, working out over at the ball arena,
and maybe can make his debut after missing the last handful of weeks with an injury.
Looking forward to getting him back and lengthening the Rockets rotation.
Also, we can mention to you that Philip Rivers debut through a touchdown pass,
but it was a Seattle field goal in the final seconds that helped the Seahawks beat the Colts.
That means the Colts now are a full game behind the Texans in the AFC South.
And right now the Texans have a tiebreaker.
The two teams will meet, however, in Week 18, inside NRG Stadium.
We mentioned the Heisman winner and the bad runner-up Diego Pavius telling the voters to F off.
and what else we got going on tomorrow night the spurs will take on the nix
in the NBA championship cup in season tournament in Las Vegas
and we brought this up with a caller a little while ago
the fact the San Antonio Spurs are as good as they are they're at 17 and 6 concerns
the hell out of me Victor Wimbunyama doesn't play in a handful of weeks doesn't start last
night and scores 20 or two nights ago scores 20 points in 21 22 minutes
he's phenomenal the Texans excuse me the rocket
should be afraid of this guy being a thorn on their side for the foreseeable future.
But, hey, the Rockets are 10 games above 500 and start a six-game road trip tonight here in Denver against the Nuggets.
And that is the news at noon.
And again, I brought this up very much at the beginning of our broadcast today.
And we're a sports show.
We deal with the toy store of life when it comes to serious topics.
But, man, hearts, condolences, sadness.
thinking about you to the people of Australia
with the terrible mass shooting
there yesterday.
The terrible mass shooting in
Providence, Rhode Island at Brown University,
which is not far from where
my daughter will be going to school next year.
So, you know, obviously concerned about that.
And then hearing word this morning
that Rob Reiner
and his wife were
killed yesterday, and apparently
it was by one of their sons.
And he has
been jailed and is on a million
multi-million dollar bail and just a terrible terrible tragedy it happened late last night or
happened late afternoon and then got to the hotel and kind of started seeing some of the
stories about it look as I mentioned also in the 10 o'clock hour I didn't go to Rob Reiner from
political beliefs I don't go to any celebrities or for that matter sports stars or for that
matter you should come to me from my political beliefs or yours but he was a brilliant filmmaker
a very funny comedic actor
part of a
dynamic
comedy
writing Hall of Fame
Family with the Reiner's
and to have his son
allegedly
and I have to use the words allegedly
kill him and his mother and his wife
just devastating
and also for those of you that don't know
one of Rob's
and his wife's sons
Jake who is not being detained
and is not being considered a suspect
in the in the in the in the uh murder uh used to work at channel two and uh i didn't get to know him
but i know people that knew him that threw their relationship of channel two so uh just a
really really sad situation but uh yeah uh when the word came out that it was two people one was
78 one was 68 that matched the ages of rob and his wife you knew that something was not good
but um didn't see all rob reiner's movies but the ones i did see um my personal favorite is misery
and I don't even like dark movies, but that was awesome.
James Conn was in it, and Kathy Bates, that movie scared the crap out of me.
It was fantastic.
But he did Stand By Me, he did The Princess Bride, he did when Mayor Harry met Sally.
This is Spinal Tap, which I guess is a new version coming out, an updated version.
And oh, by the way, nobody, you know, to have one of your children come after you like that.
Just a terrible, terrible, terrible way to start the week with all the heartbreak,
which is happening, not only in our country, but the people we know in life and obviously
what's going on in Australia.
And I use the term thoughts and purge very loosely because sometimes you don't have
thoughts and prayers about somebody to say to make you feel better, but just a terrible day
with the various events of the last 24 hours.
And that's why we're here because we try to stay away from that stuff as much as we can,
because there's enough other places in media that you can get to get to the depressing news.
we try to keep it as lighthearted as possible.
To tell the truth is coming up at the bottom of the hour,
we've got some prizes we'll give away,
and we'll do that in about 15 minutes.
If you want to chime in on the Texans victory,
if you had a good feeling about how what you saw yesterday,
and ultimately, what's ahead?
The Texans have three games remaining.
Raiders at the Chargers, home for Indianapolis.
If they run the table,
they will end the regular season
on a nine game winning streak.
I'm about to ask you a stupid question,
and I apologize for this.
Here comes a stupid question,
and please don't get mad at me,
but please give me your response at least,
so I know that you're out there.
713-212-5-7-90.
All right, so my dumb question,
I forgot to tell you, here it is.
Is there any part of you that thinks the test,
Texans have peaked too early, or is that just the dumbest thing you've ever heard?
Because obviously, when you play in the NFL, you want to win 17 games.
It doesn't happen ever.
Had nobody's won 17 in a row.
I mean, they have had 17 games for that long.
But if I said the Texans win nine straight games to end their regular season,
are you going, oh, hell yeah, we're going to win the Super Bowl, baby?
Or do you go, man, that's good, but I've always seen all these teams win all these games,
and then they lose one
and then they've got nothing to show for it.
I'm about to give you another terrible example.
Please bear with me on this.
So you guys know that I love volleyball
and love watching it,
love working play by play of it,
and the University of Nebraska,
there's a Nebraska University of the University of Nebraska,
went 30 and 0 this year.
And they're run towards the final four
of a college volleyball they lost yesterday in five sets to texas a&m congratulations to aggie volleyball
you're going to the final four i don't know if y'all aggies knew that or not there you go so you win all
these 30 games and what is nebraska doing right now oh they're bemoaning the fact they lost
one time this year and it was the last time they could lose before going on the final four so again
you by me do you love long winning streaks or do you kind of go you know what being human
once in a while isn't the worst thing in the world now again i'm not asking for the texans to lose
the los vegas if you're better than other teams you're supposed to beat them you're not supposed
to lose the las Vegas you weren't supposed to lose arizona yesterday you're supposed to win
every one game you can because those that win a bunch of games get higher seeds get home field
advantage and have a chance to go win a championship it's significantly easier to win an a
or an NFC and go to the Super Bowl when your games are in Houston or in your home stadium
and they are having to go somewhere else.
Go ask Kansas City about that all these years.
But man, this is a weird spot.
We're not accustomed to this.
You're going to beat the Raiders on Sunday.
That's going to make it seven straight.
The Chargers are really good.
They are.
They won at Kansas City yesterday, but they're by no means, you know, they're one of the
hottest teams in the NFC.
but they're by no means perfect.
So, again, I'm not saying,
oh, let's go see the Texans losing the Chargers,
then beat the Colts, you feel fine.
That's why this is a stupid question.
And again, I apologize for being stupid,
but I'm just being honest.
It's just long streaks, winning streaks,
creep me out a little bit.
Hell, my Cougars last year of basketball,
long-ass, didn't lose in the Big 12 championships
during the course of the season,
didn't lose in the tournament.
Long-ass streak.
We didn't get to celebrate the end.
Now, part of the reason when we got to the Final Four is because we had a great team
and because we had a long winning streak and we had a number one seat and we got the favorable spots.
So, like I said, I apologize, but I'm just saying it's to me long losing streaks make me extra nervous.
I don't know why that is.
I guess it's better than being 500 every week.
Not figuring out which team shows up.
Let's go to Stunna on 790 at 1223.
Stunner, what do you got today?
What's up, Matt?
How are you going today?
Good, sir.
Well, you know, I was actually watching them games.
But, you know, when they get down to the number one's playing the number two or threes,
they come in just as hard as the number one.
And Nebraska, they're on the stretch of them.
the last week or so
lost a couple of sets
and, hey, playing against them, Aggies.
Hey, that's, that's Mickey
and that Starlets?
Oh, man.
Some girls got some, some ups, man,
and they was,
his own in the face and off.
My horns went down
the same way against Wisconsin.
Yeah, I was just like,
but the Aggies did survive.
Hey, man, I got one other thing to say.
Hey, man,
Some Texans are playing great balls,
but they'll never travel like Cowboys
because, hey, man, the Cowboys are American teams.
So when they land in California in San Francisco,
you got to stand a Cowboys that actually live there.
They don't travel.
They actually live there.
So it ain't about traveling.
It's about they actually homegrown cowboys
living in California.
or home grown table is giving
a Green Bay.
They ain't got to pack up.
They're already there.
That's a difference.
Yeah, but there are not thousands,
but Stunner,
there ain't thousands of Green Bay fans in Denver.
This is a Denver team,
and they were everywhere I went last time.
There were Packergers everywhere.
I mean, they travel.
Those guys travel,
I agree with that.
But I'm talking about you go to Denver,
and they actually live there.
They ain't traveling.
They might drive 50.
miles to get there, but they're homegrown Denver Broncos.
They are not worried about traveling.
You don't have Cowboys already built in.
That's what I see the difference.
Now, you got some that do travel because they move,
but, hey, the Cowboys are built in.
And I think it's less Cowboys can rely on anywhere else, though.
No, you're fair, and then part of that is because
They have been on national television a lot.
That's because you had generations of fans that didn't have a team to root for.
You know, the Cowboys is because of their national cachet and being on television much.
So many generations of people had nothing else to root for but them.
So, yeah, you go to California and training camp with the Cowboys.
They have a lot of fans there.
But, hell, you can go to the Cowboys gain attention in every state in this union.
and I'm tired of it,
but it's never going to go away.
I feel like I've been talking about this for 15 years.
The Cowboy fans have fan clubs in Virginia
and in Minnesota and in Arkansas
and in Montana and Wyoming and Oregon.
When they say they're America's team,
they ain't lying because they put on a crappy game yesterday
with a crappy Minnesota team,
two mid-level teams at best,
and NBC's like, we'll take him every week.
We'll take Dallas every single week.
That's what Chris Collins were said a couple of years ago.
If we could put the Cowboys on 17 times we would.
That's why last night's game was Minnesota Dallas
because you could have two teams with 15 losses apiece,
but people just can't get enough of the Cowboys.
And I don't even get it.
I mean, I kind of get it,
but in today's sports world where we like winners
and we don't have time for losers,
they've given you a lot of losses.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90.
Let's go to Mick and Tomball.
Mick, you're on 7-90.
Good afternoon.
What's going on?
Hey, good afternoon, man.
How's it going, boss?
Good, thank you.
I just wanted to share my views on the Texans offense, basically.
I mean, I know we're all going to go-go over them,
but apparently if you look at it, I mean,
we can't score in the five yard line if we're inside the five yards i mean we have to go for those
field goals i don't think that's going to really help us um if we're playing those big games and
all that i just wanted to see what your opinion is about i mean the nikely um i think he still
is not that great of a offensive coordinator right some of the plays he calls are are great
But I just wanted to hear what you have to say, sir.
Yeah, the reality is this, Mick, even though they put up 40 points yesterday,
and I'm not expecting them to go to 53 or 54 points.
They scored a bunch yesterday.
The big picture is they're not a great offense.
They're an average offense at very best.
CJ did perform well yesterday.
Arizona's defense is not very good.
You're going to be playing better defenses in the playoffs.
You're going to want to score in the red zone more than you have been.
It just hasn't turned out that way, and it's not going to change until you have more components,
a better running game, better offensive linemen.
That's just the reality of it.
It's not, and I don't think Nick Cayley, because the Texans put up 40 points yesterday,
all of a sudden considered to be an elite offensive mind.
He's got time to grow in the sport, but I would say his first year as an offensive coordinator
running his own ship in loss here in Houston has been very much a disappointment.
So I'm not trying to hide what the previous weeks have done.
been, they're just getting a little bit better.
And I don't expect the Texans
score 40 points every week.
I don't expect, frankly, the Texas defense
to give up 20 every week like they did yesterday.
It's getting better.
It's still not good enough. And if they want to win the
AFC, they're going to have to do better
in the red zone from play calling
to most importantly, Nick in my mind,
execution.
I agree. I agree. Thanks.
Thank you. I appreciate the phone call.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, normally we have
Jonathan and Ross.
played to tell the truth with us, but since Ross
is gone and Jonathan's busy
watching highlights of SFFAs
18-point loss to Montana State.
Okay, I'm sorry.
That was below the belt.
Sorry.
So, lie, like, you're telling the bond.
I never know why you don't know how
to tell the truth,
truth, truth, truth,
you don't know how.
1236. Sports Talk 790. The Matt Thomas Show
continues with Ross here in Denver. Ross is off this week.
Jonathan, I have four sports takes. Let's do it.
I believe three of them.
Okay.
One is a lie.
All right. Listen to me very carefully, Houston, Texas.
is the line. Which one of the four
of my line? Which are the other three
am I telling you the truth?
Here we go, Jonathan.
I'm not predicting this.
This is not a gut feeling.
But I wouldn't be stunned
if Andy Reed retires at the end of this season.
Really? Okay.
And I'm thinking non-playoffs,
time for a change. And oh, by the way,
my Hall of Fame quarterback may not be ready for the start.
start the next season.
I'm just saying
if he called it a career,
I would not be stunned.
That's number one.
Okay.
Number two,
I think Amazon Prime
is going to ask
Al Michaels to retire at the end of the season.
You know the term having your fastball?
Yeah.
Al Michaels has lost his fastball
calling NFL games.
One of the great.
Greatest announcers of all time, Al Michaels will be pressured by Amazon to retire at the end of the year.
His call of the winning field goal in the New Orleans Tampa Bay game had the energy, the emotions, and the excitement of a preseason second quarter.
They spent a lot of money on this broadcast.
They make a big deal out of it.
They need a big time feel to it.
And unfortunately, as great as Al Michaels is, one of the greatest sportscasters of all time.
The fastball is lost.
I think Amazon Prime is going to tell him to go away.
Number three, when he retires, this is an NBA take, Jonathan.
We will all claim that Denver's Nicola Yolkut, the Rockets will see twice this week.
We'll be one of the 10 best players ever to play in NBA history.
Top 10.
Top 10.
Okay.
All right.
All right.
Number four.
I think you Texans fans need to be ready.
Your team is going to go up the wild card,
and you're going to play either Pittsburgh or Baltimore in the AFC playoffs.
You will be the number one wildcard team playing either Pittsburgh or Baltimore who wins the AFC North.
So get ready.
Traveling Texans goofballs, you're going to either Pittsburgh or Baltimore for a first round
AFC wildcard weekend.
Which one of those four do I not believe?
Here we go. Number one, I would not be stunned of Andy Reed
retires the end of the season. Number two, I think Amazon Prime
is going to force Al Michaels or retire at the end of the year.
Number three, when he retires, we will all claim that Denver's
Nicola Yokic will be one of the 10 best players in NBA history.
And number four, when the AFC playoff picture is settled,
The Texans are going to be the number one wild card team,
and they're going to go to either Pittsburgh or Baltimore
to play the AMC North champion on Wild Card Weekend.
Jonathan, which one of the four?
Am I not telling the truth?
Not telling the truth?
Let's see.
Just to make it sort and sweet,
I, no, Nicole Yotches is like, he's nice.
You know, he's got a chip under him,
but I don't think you're going to be saying,
in his career he's top 10
to ever do it I don't know because you still have Michael
Jordan as a go right
yeah yeah so I you know what I got 10
deep I can go 10 deep on this yeah
but I feel like you're more of the
the conservative when it comes to
Hall of Fame and the great so I think I'm gonna
take that one
you don't think I think Nicole Yokes be one of the 10
greatest players
okay now
we have the other ones yeah we have six people
now all six of you that are online
which one of the four
I lying about? Which one of the four am I lying about? Greg on 790, which one am I lying
about? So you can't have the guy that did the miracle call. It's got to be two. You can't force
him to retire. All right. So write that down, John. Then Greg says number two, I'm lying.
Okay. Dave, which one am I lying about? I'm going to have to agree with number two.
All right. Thank you, Dave.
Number two is, I think Amazon Prime is going to force Al Michaels to retire at the end of the year.
Let's go to Chris.
Chris, which one of the six, four of them I'm lying about?
Number one.
Number one.
You don't think I think any regroup could retire at the end of the year.
All right, put that down.
Let's go to Travis.
Travis, which one of those four am I lying about?
I think it's...
Try it again, Travis.
I think we're losing
Travis on a bad connection
Let's go
Anybody else we have here
We got line 5 is that right
Yeah
Roger which one of the form I lying about
Number one for sure
Number one for sure
All right anybody else I got to take care of
Are we all good
Brian and line two
Brian which one of those four am I lying about
I'll take number one
Number one all right
Here we go
John, I got terrible news for you.
I think Nicole Oakes would be one of the 10 greatest players ever to play in the NBA when he retires.
It's okay.
I'm glad you, you know, I'm glad you believe that.
He is going to retire averaging a triple double.
Do you know how amazing that is?
I guess I'm biased.
He averages 29.5 points a game this year.
averages 12 rebounds and 11 assist
he shoots 42% from 3
he shoots 62% from the floor
he's a multiple MVP
he's helped the Denver Nuggets
win a world championship
he's going to go down as one of the 10 greatest players
in the history of the NBA
but what if he falls off from here now
well then I'd be wrong wouldn't I
these are sports takes
I was a good question I was asking you
I was that's what I went that way
I don't think so I don't think he's going to fall off
number two the second thing I believe
I believe that the Texans are going to finish the top walled card spot.
I think they are going to run the table.
And I think they're going to wind up being the number 5C in the AFC South.
I think they're going to lose the tiebreaker to the Jaguars based off of a bunch of different tiebreakers.
But I think they're going to finish the season by going 11 and 6, or 12 and 5, I should say.
And they're going to be taking either Pittsburgh or Baltimore in the Waldcard round.
All right.
then it comes down the last two
as
Greg said earlier
you don't tell
one of the all
all all all time
greats when to retire
they'll encourage him
and Al may need some friends to help in
but they're not going to force Al Michaels
to retire
so that's the one I believe
I don't believe excuse me
I do not believe that one
So I do not believe Amazon Prime is going to force Al Michaels to retire.
I wouldn't be stunned if Andy Reid quits in Kansas City.
Not predicting it, not gut-feeling it,
but it feels like it could be a decent time to do that,
especially because of for the first time since 2014 and not been in the playoffs.
So for anybody that said they didn't believe that Amazon Prime
is going to force Al Michaels, that's right.
That was a lie.
The rest of them, I was telling you the truth.
are you disgusted by me or no
no no
these are these are some
this is some solid takes honestly
I'm not thank you very much
usually when Ross is here he gives me
terrible amounts of crap over
I was I was I was the Andy Reid
I was like ah but you know it made sense
ACL I was okay you know
these are pretty solid I like this
all right so congratulations to Greg and Dave
who figured it out that Al Michaels
will not be told by Amazon you have to
quit that is to tell the truth
for a Monday. We've got an hour
left to go, hour and change left to go, so we want
you guys to chime in. Now, if any of those four takes
you want to argue with me about, I'm all for
it. 7-13-212-5-7-90.
I don't know if I'll get much Nicola Yolkich arguments on this show
because it's Houston, but
damn, he's good.
Top ten. Top ten.
For a guy
as big as he is
to score as fluently as he does
and distribute.
I got to go through my top ten list.
Go through your top ten.
And then I want you to tell me,
if you can do this during the break,
tell me who you're knocking out.
Now, I'm not saying you're going to do it.
Yeah.
But here's what I'll do.
You give me your top ten when we come back.
I'll knock somebody out to put Yokic in.
Is that fair?
All right.
This is that, yeah.
All right.
Jonathan, the four U tab is dangerous.
I talked about this about five million times.
Who's in a bikini?
What's going on?
No, wait a minute.
How did you know they're in a bikini?
I'm just, I don't know you, Matt Thomas?
I'll spend how many months now?
All right.
There's no bikini in this one.
Can I read you the following quote?
And then can I vomit as soon as I say it?
Go ahead.
All right.
It's Matt here in Denver, by the way, 1252 on Sports Talk 7thetting.
Listen to what Rich Eisen just said.
You're going to miss the Chiefs in the playoffs.
The league is more fun when the Chiefs are good.
I can't wait to see how they're going to come back and make it happen again.
Remind me to save this on Wednesday, okay?
before I yell in the microphone on this show
and I don't like to yell very much
that I do it occasionally.
Jonathan, is there any truth
to what Rich Eisen't just said?
I think that's blasphemy
because I guess you could say the same thing
when Tom Brady left the Patriots.
They're like, oh, and the Patriots started getting bad.
Like, oh, you're going to miss the Patriots
that's what made football.
But no, I mean, I feel like,
You know what, I'm so, so proud of you.
All right, I've got to do it.
Rich Eisen, shut your bum ass up, May.
I mean, what?
That, we're going to miss the Chiefs.
Says who?
People that don't have football teams?
people that live in Nebraska
people that live in Iowa
people that live in New York City
that is one of the
that's so
walk me off the ledge
Jonathan
seriously
that guy's got a national TV radio
show and does play-by-play
for NFL
network. He's telling us we're going to
miss the Chiefs.
Seriously?
I don't know. I'm sitting here thinking about it. I don't
understand. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my
life. We're going to
who? Who's going to miss the Chiefs?
Chiefs fans? Yes.
Missouri? Yes.
But our bar patrons in Portland
or not going to miss the chiefs not being in the playoffs are people in uh i don't know
birmingham alabama going to miss the chiefs not being in the playoffs it was what seven years
in the row they they won that the division seven years in the row really good for them they deserved
it but i'm not who misses anybody not making the playoffs and in jonathan dang it i'm so
damn when the when the patriots domination ended do we met do we like man i could certainly
go for some more games at Jolette Stadium in prime times.
No, nobody said that.
Ah!
What an asinine statement.
That is actually really crazy to say.
I keep thinking about that.
Okay.
Houston, seriously.
There are 32 NFL teams.
There are 14 of those 32 teams are going to make the playoffs.
They're going to be a handful.
They're going to be closer.
They're going to be a handful.
They're going to be disaster.
you know, like your, the New York teams and your Tennessee's and your Washington's and stuff like that.
I have never missed a team not being in the playoffs that wasn't one of my teams.
Does any of, I mean, look, I know the Dallas Cowboys have a lot of fans,
but is America missing?
the Cowboys in the postseason? No, because it doesn't
matter. They don't go to the postseason anyway. They still
get big numbers.
So I will
ask you, Houston, Texas,
you awesome midday listening
audience, that is the Matt Thomas show, Ross.
Are you going to miss the
Chiefs in the playoffs?
Will your playoffs be less
fulfilling because the Chiefs
won't be there?
And this is a reporter who said that? I didn't hear, I didn't catch who
Rich Eisen. I matter of fact, we'll
do, we'll play the audio and come back.
this is some
oh god
I mean
really
yeah I'm going to send it to you
and then you tell me if I'm reading this wrong
the only time I miss teams in the playoffs
are when my team's not in the playoffs
I don't go man
shooh
the Rockets didn't make the playoffs this year
but I can't wait to see what the Lakers do.
All the Texans got bouncing in the first round of the playoffs last year.
Again, man, at least I got Can City to fall back on.
We didn't miss the Steelers when their 70s dominance was over.
We didn't miss the Niners when their 80s dominance was over.
We didn't miss the Patriots.
We didn't miss the Giants.
We don't miss anybody.
America doesn't miss will not miss the Chiefs.
In fact, America largely hates the chiefs.
Thinks Mahomes gets calls.
They're exhausted about the Travis Kelsey Taylor Swift stuff.
Yeah, okay.
Oh, man.
We don't play it after?
You won't play now?
No, play it during the break.
We'll play it.
Because, again, maybe I'm wrong.
And if I'm wrong, call me out because that's what I'm here for.
12.58, Sports Talk 790.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
All right, I'm going to play this audio, and then if I'm nuts, tell me I'm nuts, okay?
But I went and listened to it during the break, and it's exactly what I thought.
Is the national narrative we're going to miss the Chiefs?
Here's Rich Eisen discussing it.
This is what I want to say on this front with the Kansas City Chiefs, not making the playoffs,
first time of the Mahomes era.
You're going to miss them.
You're going to miss the Kansas City Chiefs
when the AFC playoffs are hitting.
You're going to miss the buzz.
You're going to miss the pizzazz.
You're going to miss Mahomes versus fill in a blank.
You're going to miss Mahomes versus fill in a blank with no time left.
You're going to miss something.
The AFC playoffs will have less juice to it.
without the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
And one day, all you chiefs fatigers out there,
all you chiefs fatigers out there,
we'll admit it,
you might have to go higher register.
Leagues more fun with the Chiefs are good.
Look, people are happy about their downfall,
but we got to see a generational talent,
which we got to see things in this decade
that we've never seen before.
And I can't wait to see how they're going to come back
and make it happen again.
he's not done people and everything i just said is one big madlib you remember that children's game
kids there used to be something called madlibs where you would actually write with a pencil
i don't know well he's educating him i have no idea everything's on a phone and on a device now
wow it's bad that's worse than i thought it was going to be i mean
now no decent shit who do you i don't even know where rich eisen would be oh my god oh my
good together get together i can't i don't have rost of balances i you're going to have to help me
i'm by myself in denver in a room screaming on the top of my lungs
i'm sure my neighbors of the rooms to the left and right of me are mad at me
as an old
blossom I used to say walk me through this
so he basically
and I'm trying to paraphrase the best
that we're going to miss
the great moments the Chiefs
if I'm not a Chiefs fan
why would I miss it
you mean to tell me that Buffalo
Baltimore wouldn't be a great
AFC championship game
and you wouldn't
Would America be captivated by Texans versus Chargers?
Probably not.
But when did I ever care about what America cared about?
If I'm a fan of the seven teams that make the playoffs,
if I'm in those cities and those regions,
am I going to be, man?
It's just not as much fun because we can't be Kansas City.
I can't see
Taylor
would yell and scream
Travis Kelsey made a catch
Chris Jones
The sack of him
Where is he?
Where is he?
I mean, shit you bum ass up.
That's terrible.
You know, I always tell you guys
To smack me when my takes are horrific.
I'm not afraid.
And if I can defend them, I can.
Sometimes I can't defend them.
to be as scolded.
I promise you, the
AFC ratings, even if they're
down 5%. So what?
We're going to watch.
We're going to watch every
playoff game like it's
must-see television.
We're going to bet on the games if you can bet
in the part of the country that can bet on games.
We're going to miss
the chiefs in the playoffs?
I don't know Jonathan
The Patriots got rid of Tom Brady
And they didn't make the playoffs for multiple years
I seem to be watching just as much football today
As I did when the Chiefs
When the Patriots were playing for the Super Bowl
Honestly I feel like it's more
Investment with just
The overall population of this season
Than any before because of the Chiefs
And there's no like how you said
There's no super majority in the AFC
I don't know
I just feel like it's better this way
And I don't even claim it as
chief fatigue
I claim it as
if you ain't one of us
you're against us
yeah
will Missouri feel upset about
yes
but do you think anybody in
Southern California is woeing the fact
that the charges are in the playoffs
the Rams are in the playoffs the chiefs are not
that it won't be as much fun
I mean come on
that was dumb
and look we're all guilty of saying dumb things
look I'm doing four hours basically by myself today
I've said probably five or six things that are dumb
today. I get that. I'm not immune to dumb.
Now, is Pat Mahomes recognizable? Yes.
Has it been a historic run? Absolutely. They were a dominant
AFC team, multiple Super Bowl winners, multiple MVP, very famous stars. I get all that.
I'm not immune to who they are. But I promise you, if the Chiefs don't make the playoff for the
next five years. It ain't going to affect, I think, generally speaking, of how America
watches television. Case and point, the Dallas Cowboys suck year and year out, but people still
watch them. We love it. We live for it. We don't particularly, if Miami and Pittsburgh
tonight were two teams that were 13 and 2, we'd be watching. Oh, but another team, Miami Dolphins,
70s and 80s, dominant team. Didn't go to the Super Bowls, but were always in the playoffs. They
fell in hard times the last 10 or 15 years.
Have we been missing out on the,
on the greatness of Dan Marino?
No.
Pittsburgh Steelers barely are making the playoffs these days
and haven't won since on a regular basis
since Rathlisberger was doing it.
Have we missed the Steelers?
No, because Steeler fans watch regardless.
I don't know.
That was just, ooh.
That felt like a midsummery sports take
to tend to generate people,
getting mad and guess what you got me mad so he worked he wins i lose
and look i was the one of thought can't see was going to make a run too i mean
you sure did i respect a lot of what they've done i thought they would bounce back but they
didn't buy see you stay in touch keep in touch there are seven other teams in aFC like my
time beat i just let's go
one oh nine on sports talk seven honey
can I peel the curtain back for 30 seconds here
there is a window washer near my window
and he's been my window all day long he is scaring a half
you feel like you're being watched or what
I don't know if he's watching me
or I'm afraid he's going to fall
but I mean
he's spraying these windows
I would think if you're a window
you got to get in and get out as fast as humanly possible he's and then he's he's
his body is banging up against the wall like you you know how when you when you're
hanging you yeah you like kind of hit the like tarzan used to always run into the trees and
stuff it's flipping me out did you make eye contact of it but no but i mean i saw his hand
once yeah the water keeps spraying up to my window the little wire that he's holding his dear life
Fawn is, I mean, I don't, I mean, I'm not going to go out there and go boo.
I was not expecting this when you feel like the curtain.
That got me to laugh.
But then if I close my curtains and I'm going to be a freak show because like, what the dude's the dude doing closing his blinds it or his, his, his, his, his, uh, shades at one, 10 of the afternoon.
I mean, I'll be doing that one to take my nap later on, but that's a different issue for a different time.
Jobs, jobs I will never have window washing be probably at the top of that list.
They pay good, apparently, though.
What do window washers make?
Do we have any idea?
I mean, are they hourly?
I mean, they make good salary.
I mean, you're taking your life in your hands
literally every time you do the job.
Let's see what AI says.
What is AI say?
In Houston, Texas area, the average is $17 to $20 per hour.
I don't know.
Oh, hell no.
I thought it was worth than that.
$20 to risk my life.
Literally every time I do my job, no chance, no thanks, no way.
The annual is 35 to $4.4.
thousand there's no shot oh you gotta get a you gotta do something you can go be a
walmart greeter for better money than that you save your life too
serious this i mean he and again he's been over here for like two hours i'm trying not to
make mention of it on the show today but it's just you hear the kunk kunk kunk oh man
i'm gonna take a picture of and put it on twitter now you got to
there's literally two wires holding out of the cat right now oh here he comes
oh my god i'm closing it close it ah he's literally coming down like spider-man oh now he's
literally my door my window ah now he's using suction cups against my window
i think i think i heard a little oh my god can take i can't take a picture of it that would be
real that'd be too obvious you think he gets out a lot i feel like he gets out a lot oh my god i can't
even look at. I'm going to turn around. I am flipping
the F out right now. I'm serious.
It's going to break in.
Do you hear that? Do you hear him in the background?
Oh,
is he coming into my room?
Oh,
I promise, guys,
I'm sorry, folks. I am
losing my mind.
713-212-5-7.
I'm not going to get a drink.
You know, I've never opened up my
survey bar.
here on the road because like beers are like $14
I'm going to have to take one he's
713
212 5709 it took a break
113 of the Matt Thomas showed Ross
Okay quicked up
So
He was staring at me
And I was like I can't
Take a picture of a man who's cleaning my window
Who's being held on by
Two whatever the rods are, chains
whatever these things are.
And then we go eye to eye with each other.
He looks like Seth Rawlins and WW.
What?
So, yeah, I can't, I can't, I didn't want to take it.
Because I don't want him to fall and hurt himself.
And he lands and he goes, you know, why, why were you falling?
And he goes, because the guy was taking a picture of me.
So I can't do that.
Yeah, not good for your constance.
I get it.
I get it.
No, it's not.
And he's still working on the damn one.
It's really freaking me out.
Can we talk?
Can somebody call and talk about anything in their life?
Because I don't think you're helping me out here.
I try to do a major market radio show,
and I got window washer here just like he's like,
I mean, my window's not even that big.
How many floors is this?
I'm getting off the top of you.
I just want to know how big this building is.
Well, I'm on the fourth floor, but there's like 20.
Okay.
And then there's some residents here, too.
I don't know how tall they go,
but this is a nice hotel.
I mean, clearly it is, but.
All right.
Focus, come on.
Believe it or not, coming up at $150.
All things about either Dick Van Dyke or Dave Ward.
By the way, your Texans are going to make the playoffs.
Okay, so I did a little bit of checking, and then some of y'all did some checking, too,
about the division tiebreakers.
If the Texans and the Jaguars finish at 12 and 5, if my research team, meaning you guys out there, did me right,
It looks like the Texans would win the AFC South.
You're saying, oh, but bad, how does that happen?
Well, I looked up the tiebreakers for the NFL playoffs.
If two teams are tied, which the Texans would be at 12 and 5, head to head,
well, that's even because both teams will have won a game.
Best one loss percentage within the division,
the Texas would have in the Jaguars under the same record.
Next, best one-loss tied percentage in common games.
They would have the same record among common games.
And that's all the AFC opponents are common, plus you would then throw in the NFC.
The fourth tiebreaker would be best conference record.
So you're saying, well, how did that get there?
If the Texans and the Jaguars finish at 12 and 5,
and I'm going to presume that Jacksonville would lose at Denver this week,
and then beat the Colts, beat the Titans.
I had the Texans winning all three of their games to get to 12 and 5.
That would mean the Texans would have a division, a conference record of 10 and 2.
The Jaguars would be 9 and 3.
So if that happens, if that scenario plays out where the Texans and the Jaguars both end up at 12 and 5,
the Texans would win the AFC South.
on the fourth tiebreaker over Jacksonville.
Now, things could obviously change.
They could have the same record, but they could lose a different game.
Like, for instance, the Texans could,
the Texans could beat the Broncos,
but then lose either of the Colts of the Titans.
Who knows?
I'm just saying, got to keep these in mind.
So the tiebreakers, again, are in the playoffs,
would be head-to-head, one, division record, two,
Common Games is three.
I didn't even know that until I did a little bit of checking.
Then the fourth tiebreaker is the conference.
The fifth tiebreaker is strength of victory,
meaning how bad did you beat somebody?
The six tiebreaker is schedule of strength.
And then after that, I'm not going to go on.
But if it has to go to a 12th tire breaker, it's coin toss.
Only if it goes to 12 tiebreakers.
so i put it on twitter you guys can retweet it keep it for yourself whatever the case may be but
all the heavy lifting was done the tiebreaker scenario is in play and that is available on my
twitter account at sports mt somebody asked earlier today about tarry easton he did work out
with the rockets today they are coming back as we speak in from a pregame shoot around it'll be a
game time decision as to whether or not tarry plays tonight as the rockets at 18 and 6 take on
excuse me, the Rockets at 16 and 6,
take on the 18 and 6 Denver Nuggets.
The Nuggets have won four games in a row.
Rockets will play here again later this week on Friday,
but we're going to go to New Orleans first
because it just makes geographical sense to go all the way there,
then come back this direction.
So there you have it on that.
Anything else, John,
then, that we have not talked about enough today.
We mentioned the Texans.
Philip River's debut was a lot better than I think people thought it was going to be.
We mentioned the Heisman race
and how Diego Pobby act like a total pud
going F the voters and putting things on his Instagram
and on his iPad and whatnot.
AFC playoff race, rockets,
and all by the way, the Texans disposed to the Cardinals 40 to 20,
which is something they had to do.
And they'll do it again this week because Las Vegas is terrible.
We're in a pretty good time, friends.
Rockets are playing good.
Texans are about to get into the playoffs,
seating to be determined.
and the Astros, I mean, to be brutally honest, have not done much.
I've not done much.
So will they do something?
Yes.
Will they fix their outfield in order to maybe get starting pitching, i.e. Jake Myers, yes.
Will they get rid of this crowd in the infield?
That I can't tell you.
And we'll talk to more about this.
Channel Rome's going to do a couple hours with me on the radio here on Wednesday.
Thursday this week, so look forward to talking to him with him about that.
I'm trying to think what else is, anything else gone on sports-wise.
Micah Parsons probably done for the season.
Oh, the ACL tear for the Green Bay Packers.
But these ACL tears are terrible, aren't they?
Yes.
I feel like it was six this season, I feel like.
Well, I mean, and I don't know, there's anything you need to prevent it.
I mean, it's football, physical sport, tough.
And I said, done for the season.
He may be done for part of next season, too.
His was non-contact, so I think it's a clean tear when he came trying to cut back to that quarterback.
Does it matter if it's clean or not?
I guess no, it doesn't.
Well, my, just to feel like current, I tore my ACL, but mine wasn't a clean.
I tore my meniscus in three places as well.
So it's honestly easier recovery just to get a clean tear ACL and nothing else in your knees messed up.
So it would be a quicker recovery, my bad.
So you tore, wouldn't you tear again?
I tore three parts of my meniscus.
and then clean
breaked my ACL.
So when you did it,
did you hear it,
tear?
I felt,
I felt,
I felt,
I felt,
I felt something in my knee
just gave out.
Like,
it's like one of the worst,
one of the worst feelings
you could ever think.
It was,
I almost passed out.
Like,
I hit the ground
and I couldn't even breathe
that I'd better hurt.
Like,
it's crazy.
Do you cry like a baby?
No,
no, no,
I didn't cry.
I didn't cry.
I didn't cry.
Not until,
I didn't cry until the next day
The next day it was what it was bad
Trying to walk it like
You know hobble
And then I got all puffing everything
You didn't it
Man
And so you had surgery correct?
Yeah I was one of those guys
I didn't get surgery until later
I had to finish college first
And then
You walked around with your leg in like three different pieces
Yeah man I had to get the degree
I had to do my classes
I had in-person classes that I couldn't like take a
So you couldn't run clearly right
No no no I could
run.
You left them when you walked?
Yeah.
But ACLs, you can't end up walking after a heel, so probably like two months in I could
walk pretty okay.
I can just slow walk.
Anything else I couldn't do.
And then how long was a rehab?
Really, I'm still rehabbing.
I'm 18 months or 18 months.
Oh, so you're trying to get the sympathy card from the on.
No, no.
To get back, you can get back in less than a year.
Like you get six months is you can be able to jump and everything like that.
But to get that contact.
in that quickness, it's going to take it a little bit longer.
That's, what a terrible story.
What a terrible, terrible story.
Yikes.
All right.
Well, I'm glad you're okay.
That's the most important.
Yeah, I'm good.
I told you I'm old.
I got old legs back here.
How old are you again?
I'm like, I'm like 35, you know.
So your legs are a decade older than you are?
Maybe even 45, honestly.
My legs are bad, man.
So if you're saying that you and I ran, who would win?
okay no all right now let's see don't let me pull the spikes now man don't I was trying to
slip that one in I was trying to slip that one in all right seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven nine we got to believe it or not coming up at about
twenty minutes from now we got one segment left if you guys want to come in and talk about
how excited you are about your Texans playing as well as they are and 12 and five whatever tire breaker
over Jacksonville if the tie markers worked out well especially with conference record
and division record we get that to get to we also have a college football playoffs start
this weekend we'll be getting somebody on to give us an A&M perspective on this and by
way I had a lot of people at the barbershop of the weekend why is A&M get the early game
there's one simple reason they're putting the two good games in front of the two bad
games meaning James Madison and Tulane because those two late games are going to go head to
against the NFL.
NFL regular season is going to crush
college football playoff rankings,
college football playoff games.
I don't know if it's fair or not, but it's the truth.
So there you have it.
That's the reason why they did.
So for those of you going to the game between Miami and A&M this week,
it's 11 o'clock Saturday at Kyle Field,
you're getting it because you're not going to, relatively speaking,
have any competition.
I mean, you'll compete against college basketball,
but it's the start of the playoffs.
So that's the reason why they're doing that.
In about 30 seconds, we're going to play some cuts, Jonathan,
from today's press availability.
Wexter put some stuff in.
As a matter of fact, can you get to that?
My computer is a little down here at this exact moment.
Yeah, which one?
I don't know.
You tell me.
What do you think sounds good to the audience?
We got Gerard Jordan.
You can know more about him.
I'll share you as giving him some praise on that as well.
Yeah, let's, uh, let's, uh, let's, uh, let's, uh,
Let's hear from a man that I thought would never make an appearance on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
One second if it plays.
Oh, man, my eyes got big.
I just seen daylight and I was running as fast as I can.
I got a little tired.
You know, it's hard not playing with full pass for a while and then coming out here for the first time playing a full pass.
And then that's a different feeling.
All right.
So there you go.
Good job for him yesterday.
He spoke after there's a 101-yard rushing day from a man that I thought would.
Again, practice squad, 99% of the season, 15 carries 101 yards.
Do I think he's a long-term solution?
No, but for a temporary, good by us.
So there you go.
That's a little bit from Jordan.
Who else had to spoke yesterday after the big victory that would be worthy of playing?
Oh, Alshah here talking about offense helping the defense,
We got Lassiter on offense performance.
We got, of course, Nico, and then Titus Howard
talking about Strouds, great passes, and, you know, just giving him praise.
Just keep firing them off.
We've got to brag on the, look, when they're playing well,
you've got to hear from them.
Offense doesn't put up 40, and that could be a good ball game.
That's a good offense, you know.
They got some really good dynamic players,
and Berset is really good at just taking the deep shots,
but also, like, being just methodical downfield,
taking what you give them.
So I've got a lot of respect for that offense and those players and that team.
But I think just what you saw today was just us staying together, playing together,
and finding a different way to win another ball.
That was Lassadr, I'm assuming, right?
I'll see here.
No, I'll see what's doing?
Okay.
Yeah, he was being polite.
Nobody has respect for Arizona.
I mean, they do.
I mean, look, all those players have respect for each other's teams, for sure.
but Jacobi Percet is not necessarily a guy that's going to strike a lot of fear.
The Texan's defense is better than anything that Jacobi Persec could put out there.
Now, I'll say this, Tray McBride was amazing yesterday.
And Tray McBride is probably, as I said earlier on the show today,
he's probably the best player in the NFL you don't know about
because, again, unless you have a fantasy team,
he's grabbing balls left and right and doing a great job for them,
but he's really, that's about the bigger part of their offense.
So let's go to Titus Howard.
about how things are going right now on that side of the ball.
I saw one on the line that one when he was rolling in between the window to Dalton.
That was a crazy throw.
I was like in the game.
I'm like, oh, man, that's crazy.
You know, but a lot of corbets can't make that throw.
Man, his release is so fast that's where he's able to make some of those throws.
So, C.J's a, I know people get, see there a lot of stuff.
See, they don't want the best quarterbacks in a league.
When we do what we're supposed to do and get him in time, I think he went the best.
do you do you all notice it's funny
Titus Howard is a young man in his mid-20s
very well compensated for his job
but there is an innocence to
what guys are like in the locker room
especially those that are not considered divas
they don't worry about their next paycheck
they're not worried about their next contract
that to me was Titus Howard just talking
like a guy that wanted to brag about his teammate.
And I love the admission that he said that, look, we've got to do our job.
It is amazing, ladies and gentlemen, how good an offensive line can be or a quarterback
can be if the offensive line at least handles their own business.
And the stats tell me he was only sack one time yesterday.
So that's a very good thing.
I don't know how the pressure rate was and whatnot, but, you know, and CJ, again, never
will be considered a scrambler, a guy
that was looking to run for first downs.
He has to do it if he needs to,
but he's a guy that has very good escapeability
unless he's running into 12 or 13-yard sacks,
and sometimes he should fall down faster than he does.
But that was Titus Howard yesterday,
speaking about a player
that he knows he's on his side
can get the job done.
And we'd be kind of waiting for that.
It's difficult to go,
and I don't go in the locker room for the Texans,
but I'm guessing it's not fun to go in and talk to players after games
when their quarterback's been sacked five or six times
or their quarterback takes a head and is can concussed.
That can't be an enjoyable experience.
But just in that one little soundbite, it's not like, man, I'm a kid,
I don't care what I'm making, I don't care the pressure that's on me,
I'm playing offensive line in the NFL,
and I get to protect a guy that I take pride in.
And it's kind of nice.
It's crazy how chipper the Texas locker room has been the last seven or eight weeks, generally speaking.
Because we had them, and I'll put myself in the same mix.
When you go 0 and 3, you're not supposed to make the playoffs.
Not impossible.
Not at all.
You're right.
But it's highly irregular for it to happen.
The NFL tells us every year after the first two or three weeks of the season how limited you are in making the playoffs if you get off to a certain start.
So, I just felt like it was a good time to play a couple of sound bites about what it's like.
You hear people cheering in the background.
Guys are in a good mood, ready to talk.
Now, apparently, I don't think Will Anderson spoke yesterday, but I think it's more about what happened to his eye than anything else.
I don't know the drama behind that.
I don't particularly care.
But Will Anderson has done beyond enough media appearances.
And so I don't know if it's mad about something.
I don't think it was an issue.
I don't think it was brought up today in the press conference.
And if it was, I'm sure Wexon, Adam will bring that up during their show today.
But if something happened where he wasn't feeling great or whatever, let the man be.
I don't think it's a storyline.
Because my guess is if the Texans beat somebody by 20 points and they're one step close to the playoffs,
that Will Anderson would want to spend as much time talking about it as possible.
So I don't know what the situation was, but don't need to worry about it.
All right, let's do this.
We got believe it or not today.
It's half about Dave Ward and half.
half about Dick Van Dyke.
Respectfully, I don't want to do a believe or not on Rob Reiner because, I mean, his timing
was sudden violent and obviously a tragic, tragic situation with his son being held as a
potential man that did the, you know, that committed the murders, which is just awful.
So we will spend a little bit of time honoring the great life of Dave Ward and obviously
He's spending a little bit of time talking about Jerry Van Dyck.
That was a brother, Dick Van Dyke, who just turned 100 years old.
So that'll be believing or not today.
Tomorrow on the show, we've got gut feelings.
Chris Cordy's going to hang out for a little bit.
And hopefully we're talking about a Rockets victory against the Denver Nuggets.
Rockets again, 10 games above 500.
I did see a stat.
It's about to get much more difficult for the Rockets.
The rest, the way we have played the fewest number of games, I think, in the NBA this year.
And it's about to get much more intense with the Rockets.
In fact, five teams so far among the third in the NBA have played at least 27 games.
The Rockets are about to play 29 games in 54 days.
That's all before the All-Star break.
Six sets of back-to-backs.
Only negative so far about that for Rocket fans are.
The Rockets have played in two back-to-backs, and they have lost both ends of the second end of the back-to-back.
Rockets live a back-to-back this weekend.
In fact, Saturday here in Denver,
against the Nuggets. Sunday we go to
Sacramento to take on the Kings.
Believe it or not, Dave Ward, and believe
or not, Dick Van Dyke up next.
Time 143. If you want to play
713-212-5-790,
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Man, we're having a tough day with deaths.
Obviously, the passing of Rob
Reiner and his wife. Horrific, horrific
situation in California.
Jonathan, you don't know.
This is not even a conversation for you,
in the one minute
here we
before you got
believe it or not
I never
watched
general hospitals
a kid
but I knew
who Luke
and Laura
was
maybe
the most
famous
soap opera
wedding
in history
was when
Luke and Laura
got married
well
Anthony Gary
who played
Luke died
yeah
I guess yesterday
he was
78 years old
yeah I don't think strange but I feel like every year close to the end of year
and you guys can say that about every month but it feels like at the end of the year before
the year passes a lot of people end up passing away as well
I don't know why that is now you can always figure out births because you know if the weather's
cold it's going to be summer birthdays you know but deaths you don't know you don't
know Anthony Gary he had the curliest hair in the 80s I think anybody here
alive. I didn't watch
it, but if anybody was a kid knew that that was
the most famous wedding. I think
it was like set a record for most people ever
watching a daytime show
was when Luke and Laura got married.
I was more of a days of our lives person until
Marlena got possessed and I turned it off.
You know me, I'm exclusive Young and the Restless
and Bold and the Beautiful.
Yeah. By the way, I got to
call my wife and tell her to turn the DVR off.
I won't be able to watch 19, Young and the Restless
and 12 Bold and the Beautiful's one.
gone for the next two weeks.
First person problems.
Mad Thomas problems, yeah.
Those are Matt Thomas problems for sure.
All right.
I'm back here in Denver.
We're not leaving for New Orleans until tomorrow afternoon,
so I will do the show here.
Gordy's going to stop by and help out for a couple of hours.
I may have to leave a little bit early.
I don't know.
I don't know the schedule just yet, but we'll have that.
We've got gut feelings.
I want you to watch Yokic tonight, Jonathan.
I'm going to me a little homework assignment.
Okay.
And just, again,
he average he is a seven-footer that averages a triple double
no and I hear you I'm just I'm just making sure you're saying
top two you'll take someone out of top ten for sure if he can
Oh did you get your top ten list ready?
I had it ready but I mean
Okay let's do it really fast we got 30 seconds
All right it's LeBron
Karim this is no order
Tim Duncan Larry that's four
You got
Jordan
Jordan yes I'm Mr. Jordan
I got LeBron
I'm going to put Steph there but
I'm just going to put it right there
I'm going to stop you right there because I got a short time
I'm going to knock off Tim Duncan and put Nicola Yolkutts in the spot
you're going to knock up Tim Duncan and that's Steph?
Yeah yeah
yep go and do it
I guess there's a argument there
see you letter Tim
see your letter
by Tim hello Nicola
if he averages a triple level for his career
and multiple time MVP and world champion
he's in the top 10
I'm forgetting Larry Byrd my bad my bad
Don't forget Larry Bird
Kobe's certainly in the mix there around that 10-11 spot too
Before we go to believe I'm not
Do you old school cats do y'all even put Will Tramblein up there
Or is that like absolutely okay okay so now I can't put like
Coosie and Miken and guys that you know
that are way past my prime
but I can put in
I can absolutely put in
well and I ever saw Will play
but I saw enough video
Wilts in
Wilts Kareem of the old
old school guys are in
yeah
I want you to make room for
Nicole Okach
and as much as I wanted to
not do that tonight
there's he's
he wakes up with a triple double
five minutes left to go on the show
what should we do
we should play
America's fastest growing sports
