Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
102 at H-Town.
Good morning.
And I mean a good morning to you,
especially to Texas Darlene,
Deep Steel Dan,
Battle Red Ross.
This is Sports Talk 790.
The Chargers take over,
1139 to go in this first half.
Out of the pocket.
Herbert, dials it up across his body,
and that one's in her.
intercepted. Camari Lasseter.
Play of the drive. It's clubbed on the fourth and one.
It's Mixon, first down, and more.
Goodness. He's going to get in a car.
Make his 12-hour drive to Kansas City.
I'm very busy.
Because those damn airfares.
I guess dark breasts is at 700, somebody told me.
But Schmind is over a grand.
It was like four connections.
Yeah, the drive's not that bad.
Just go through a sleet and snow and ice.
Yeah.
Make it on out there.
Breezy.
Hey, I will say this.
For Saturday at 3.30.
Yeah, I mean...
It is funny. Sports Media Watch is a website that said,
Kansas City is the marquee team of all of them.
Yes.
Unless they play an opponent no one cares about it.
Well, hey.
Well, the reality is...
Bell's Ravens was always going to be the marquee.
Well, the reality is you have to play
is that you wanted to get as many Saturday teams playing on Saturday.
so for rest of purposes.
Right.
So your decision was between the lions who were the off the buy and the chiefs that were on the buy,
and you had to figure out which of the two matchups were going to be the more appealing of the two.
Monday team was always going to play on Sunday.
Monday was always going to play on Sunday.
So you then had to decide between Detroit versus whoever the lowest seat was going to be,
which Daniels made, I mean, my goodness, was he good yesterday.
Yes, he was.
or Texans and Chiefs where the Texans were outstanding,
but again, just don't carry any sort of national cachet.
You know, at this point, it doesn't matter.
You're down to the final eight.
I mean, it is what it is.
I mean, somebody's got to play early.
Keep winning, you'll be on prime time.
Keep winning, you'll be on Sunday at 5.30.
Yeah.
If you win this week, you're playing for a championship, probably at 2 o'clock.
That's fine?
It's fine.
in either Baltimore or in Buffalo.
Ooh, that, ooh, Lordy.
They really going to have to earn that bad boy.
Go bills?
Lesser of the two evils?
You ready for us?
Should I save this for to tell the truth?
Yes.
Yeah, I'm going to save it.
Okay.
I'm going to save what I was about to save until 1230.
Okay.
That's actually too long of a forward tease because I would love for all of y'all to say with me
for all the way you'll three.
Let's go run your irons and we'll hear you back at 1230, people.
I got to write them.
I talk for a second.
I might write this down because this is such a good.
Matt is writing down what he's going to say.
But yes, big Texans win over the weekend.
A lot of people doubting them.
I want to hear, you know what?
I don't hear from people that want to apologize for downing the Texans.
And I want to hear from people who believed in the Houston Texans at 713-1-3-1-2-5-7-9.
And by the way.
By the way.
If you don't pick the Texans in life, it doesn't mean you're anti-Huston.
I had some jabroning home after me and Sean.
on. You live here. You're supposed to pick for that. No, that's not how it works.
What's his name? I wonder, this guy's making a lot of good points. No, he's not. I want to follow
this guy, retweet him. He's got two followers, both of which are porn bots. So, you know, and again,
shame on me for even interacting. I should have done better. No, they don't. Man, I told you.
He told you 20, 25, Matt, straight to the Mue button. I'm going to do it. Now I'm going to find this
guy. Where is he? Um, I don't know. Oh, MD2. Yeah. He's got five followers.
Okay. So let me read you his tweet.
Or do you want to read it? Because you're taking personal pleasure out of this.
I certainly am.
Go ahead. You read it. I get the clap back at Rex Ryan right now, but let's remember to hold Sean unfiltered in SportsMT accountable.
Pick the Chargers all week against the city literally work for.
Against the city they literally work for. He was correct. I was incorrect.
Yeah, I don't work for the city of Houston. I work for the listeners and sports fans of Houston.
If I put it this way, and think about this if you dumbed it down.
If you literally picked Houston in every sporting event,
if you literally picked Chicago because you lived in Chicago,
you're going to be wrong more than you're right.
So if I picked the Texans to win 17 times this season,
I'd have been wrong seven times.
Yeah, but you'd have been right, 10.
Our 11 now.
That's pretty good.
It's a good clip.
If I'd have picked the Rockets to win three years ago,
82 times, I'd been wrong 60.
If I'd have picked them to win date when Money Mills was quarterbacking the Texans,
I'd have been, you know, the 14 loss game.
What were those records back then?
What were they, 5 and 11, 4, 12, something like that?
It wasn't going great.
It'd have been going great the last couple years.
This show is about us making predictions.
It ain't personal.
It's just what the predictions are.
And the predictions, by the way,
had the Chargers is a favor of this entire week.
and from what I read, and again, this is just what I saw on TV on Saturday,
because I had a lot of free time, frankly, because it would cancelation in Atlanta.
Yes.
Is that the money was coming in heavy, heavy, heavy on the chargers.
That actually really, really heavy.
You know why?
Because the money was coming heavy in the chargers, and they didn't move the line.
Yeah.
So what does that mean?
Because I don't really know.
That means the books feel confident in their line.
If their line is moving big with a bunch of sharp money, they'll move it.
They'll move at half point or a point.
But the fact that all the public money was coming in on the chargers and it didn't move,
that made me even feel better about my prediction that my Texans would win.
Yeah, so that guy with porn bots loves you and he hates me.
He does follow me, so I appreciate him.
He doesn't follow me.
That's okay.
He's a smart guy.
So, by the way, I'm not going to, if you don't follow me, I'm not interacting with you ever again.
I'm not wasting my time.
At least have the stones to follow me.
Then you follow me and then we can have a conversation.
Or a pleasant debate.
But most times when you get on Twitter, you just don't have pleasant debate.
You know, I'm following this guy back.
You can.
You can enjoy that.
He didn't tweet much.
I appreciate him, though.
He's making a lot of good points on the interwebs.
Yeah, by the way, really convenient, nice Twitter name.
What is it again?
MD2A, Part 3.
Mm-hmm.
Well, again, shame on me for debating somebody that doesn't even follow me.
You follow me, we'll have a conversation.
Oh, look.
He's actually issued apology.
Did he really?
Yeah, just now.
What does it say?
You're making this up.
I'm not making this up.
I'm not going to read it to you right now?
You know what?
If he is, then I'm going to come back.
You know what? As a grown-ass man, I will accept his apology, and I will apologize back.
Maybe he doesn't have porn bots.
I am waving the white flag. I was under the influence of a few Crawford Box Saturday night,
and I should have directed my excitement in a positive manner.
Wow.
You know what?
I'm going to give him a like.
Good for him.
I don't want to still like his original tweet.
Stand your ground, MD2.
MD2.
All is forgiven.
We're now besties.
Say how easy I am.
I'm forgiving and forget guy.
Ross, you criticize me.
for a lot of things in my life.
It's time for you in the next 12 seconds here before we go to break
to tell how people how quickly I forget about stuff.
Next segment coming up after a short break here.
What do you want me to do?
Just say how easy, breezy I am when it comes to...
You want to lie to the people?
No.
Well, you mean, the average person...
You're asking me to.
I mean, the average person lies four times a day.
No, Matt holds grudges for years and decades.
That's not even true.
Oh! Who my hold on grudge it with right now?
Don't even get me started.
All right.
Hey
Justin Herbert was embarrassed
And we'll talk more about that when you come back
Your football team
Embarrassed
Throw up your H's baby
No we do not throw up
H's on this show
It's ridiculous
How about throw up some Ws
That's what you throw up
They did throw up one
You throw up a big W
Uh huh
713
212-790
Your squad
took a quarterback
Who had what
Throwing three interceptions
The entire regular season
Yes
And threw 4-1 game.
Well, one was off the hands of Will Disseley.
And by the way, Charger receivers did him zero favors.
Correct.
Well, Ladd McCong-Lad McCong-Han.
He had a fine Saturday afternoon at his RG Stadium.
Right down the middle of the field.
It's an 85-yard touchdown.
Oh, the Chargers are back.
Oh, they block the kick.
And then they come back for two.
My favorite player's Ladd-Maconke.
Sorry.
Ireland.
You don't stereotype on your show.
Ireland thinks you're racist.
713-212-5-7-90.
It's a Matt Thomas-Shill-Ross.
Get in here right now and let's celebrate.
Celebrate.
Celebrate.
You know what I want today?
Is that three dog night?
I don't want any corny generic bumps from you today, Conner Day.
Oh, hey.
I want celebrate.
No, he made a lot of good points.
When we don't go generic, we spend four minutes talking about the song.
I swear to a guy.
Memory about watching Donnie Marie on Soul Train in 1983.
I swear to God, I will not come in any of the music we play today.
No, I swear.
You're a liar.
You're a liar.
All the way to two o'clock.
Sports Talk 790.
All right, sports talk 790 where I got to talk to you about over this weekend.

This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk 790.
Obviously, you know, you get with an outside noise, and it just is what it is.
Everybody got an opinion about, you know, a team, but when it come down to it, bro, like, when they come down to it,
when you get through the white lines, you know, for 60 minutes or more, you know, like I said,
it's a playoffs, no stat matter.
The only thing that matter is the win.
You got to go out there and put your bed on tape and we display that today.
Joe Mixing?
Putting that blank on tape today.
Over 100 yards.
By the way, we need to clip that Joe Mixin.
Just that part. Put that blank on tape today.
You don't like it?
Sure.
You squinched your nose.
You obviously did like it.
So I'm sorry, bad idea, Connor.
It was a bad idea.
No, just stop. Do whatever you want, Matt.
Jeez.
I just think production value to a show is important.
I agree.
And I think that would be a funny little clip to play.
Let's do it.
No.
We'll say.
25 carries 106 yards for Joe Mixin and a touchdown.
The touchdown that was clinched the game.
Yeah, it was the brown gravy on top of your chicken fried steak.
Cream gravy on chicken fried steak.
I agree, but you can go brown as well.
I just want to do it to irritate you.
It's all about the cream, Matt.
Cash rolls everything around me.
You've been saying that for a long time.
Cream, get the money.
Dollar, dollar bills, y'all.
So what does Brown get you?
What can it do for you?
be inferior to cream gravy?
Give you the runs.
All right, back to football talk.
Yeah, Joe makes it outstanding.
Again, I think we should clip it.
Absolutely.
So, I want you to clip it today sometime, Connor.
And then I want you to say,
organically throw it in the show somewhere and see if it fits.
Go out there, put your back on tape,
and we display that today.
I don't even know what he's saying.
I missed the quote.
It doesn't really matter.
It just sounded good.
I just like a bleep.
Yeah, okay.
So one of my good friends in my life,
had been lifelong friend school since we were in the sixth grade as a large chargers fan and i have not
reached out to him i didn't send a text sorry for your loss good because i actually like him um
we did talk at half and he was basically uh popping pills and drinking large amounts of alcoholic
beverages because he was so sad that wasn't the charger team that we had talked about all week going in
that wasn't a charger team that came in to play the last four weeks and i would say probably if
you were to get a pie out and say all right what percentage of the person's you're going to be able to
percentage which the Texas defense was Will Anderson was absolutely amazing.
So I would say probably 75% of what we saw on hand was because the Texans put together this defensive game plan and were just outstanding.
Stingley was great.
Will Anderson was great.
The Neil Hunter was great.
I mean, there were so many.
Henry, Al-Zis, I'm sorry, after he got hurt, came back all over the place.
But the Texans, and got to be fair about this.
That's what we want to do.
We've got to be fair.
The Texans also caught Justin Herbert on one of his.
worst days ever. He was
constantly overthrowing
intermediate receiver
passes to his running backs
and his tight end.
If it's not, for McCocky, there was
nothing else going on for them.
He was, he was terrible.
And credited Texans for making a guy who was having
a really good season look terrible.
Yeah, I think maybe
Justin Herbert had a bit of an off day, but a lot
of that was the Texans putting him into off date.
And getting into, I mean,
and having the talent out there.
and Camarie Lasseter making plays and Darry Stenley making plays.
And it was at all three levels the Texans were winning in that defense.
And then, I mean, we kind of talked about it on Friday about how they basically had a buy week against the Titans for some of the people.
Some players did have a bunch of snaps, but a lot of the players, a lot of the starters were able to rest and get ready to go.
And you're at home in a loud, noisy environment.
And this defense, obviously, has a lot better time, has a lot easier time.
at home than they do on the road.
And they harassed
Justin Herbert and did a great job
starting with stopping the run.
And we talked about it.
All these running backs and Justin Herbert
and this offensive line of the Chargers.
Texans, I mean, just flat out
destroyed them. Six points in the
first quarter. Three of those off the turnover
off the very first off the rip.
You had to be, if you were a Charger fan, you had to be
wigging out that all you got out of the first two
possessions were six points.
Yeah, especially one was completely gifted.
you with the John Matchy fumble on the, I mean, that was, at that point, I was like, oh my God,
is this just going to keep rolling into a Texan's disaster?
They stabilized, credit to the defense for holding to a field goal there.
C.J. Stroud, while he wasn't perfect the entire evening, I thought he made a more than a
handful of special plays, including with his feet. And this was Texans football that we wanted
to see from the outset. This is their second 20 point win of the year. The only other one
was against the Patriots.
So this is, we've been waiting and waiting and waiting
for them to play their best football.
We saw their best football on Saturday.
It was beyond impressive,
especially because they were able to withstand
what was a very awkward start of the football game.
Yeah.
Another 20.1 was the Cowboys.
I forgot that one.
But you could get my point.
Yeah, yeah.
Nothing more than you can say
than just a really dominant performance
against a team.
I mean, Jim Harbaugh,
you know, they were,
would show camera.
He was like, this is not the team I'm watching.
I can't believe my defense is getting so tired.
And how about the ball on the bad snap that Strad takes a scramble those right?
Heaps at 45 in the air.
Was it a hundredtham with the catch on that one?
Yes.
It was wide open space.
I mean, my God.
That was.
Good defensive teams turn that into either an interception of bare minimum
or they wind up sacking the quarterback forcing the fumble.
And it turns, they were,
The Chargers were shell-shocked.
They had the number one scoring defense in football.
So that was a good defense.
That's the credit to C.J. Stroud for keeping his composure,
keeping his eyes downfield, finding Xavier Hutchinson,
making the throw and Hutchinson making the catch.
And that's really when it kind of felt like a switch flip.
That's when things really started to turn.
And it's like, man, C.J. Stroud looks so much more confident.
He was stepping into his throws, even under pressure.
There was too many times this year where he wasn't,
he was either seeing ghosts in the pocket.
or are not setting his feet because he felt like he had to rush things.
He wasn't rushing things.
He used his feet.
That's the best I've seen him move in weeks.
The only linemen I thought really struggle was Titus Howard.
And the CBS folks made a point of that multiple occasions.
But generally speak, the offensive line did its part.
Yeah, they didn't pick up that stunt when Kalilat came in.
That was bad on Titus Howard or Laramintz or whoever.
But for the most part, they did their job.
Yeah.
This is the way it was supposed to go.
talking about preseason or what we thought what this team is capable of.
Yep.
Let's go to the phones.
Talk to Eddie and Katie on 7.99 at 1026.
Eddie, thank you for holding.
Good morning to you.
Wait, Ross, I put him on.
Hi, Eddie.
Hey, how are you guys doing today?
Good.
So, a quick question.
Y'all brought it up in the last segment,
and it's kind of new to me.
I've been a Texan fan basically since the inception,
and I haven't been to a game in a while.
I was a game on Saturday, and there's just this, like, overdoing of throw the H's up,
and a few new chance of, like, Texans swarm or Texans hold.
They still kind of have the old classic first-down thing they do,
but now instead of saying another Houston first down, it's another H-town first down,
when did all that change?
Because I was kind of, like, just caught off guard when I was at the game?
When did this whole throw-up the H thing start?
Well, it depends on who you ask.
It could be from the hip-hop community.
It could be from people that just represent the city, Houston.
Cal does it a lot.
It's frankly awkward to me.
But I don't do it, but I'm not going to judge those that do it.
Maybe I judge a little bit.
And it's basically just like the metal symbol, but you turn your hand around.
Yeah.
Like throw up the horns, but just, you know.
It's supposed to an age.
Do people in Dallas throw up the D?
maybe they're doing something with the d i don't know if they're throwing it up yeah if you're from dals
are you throwing up your d just asking for a friend
that's all i got i wasn't curious because like i said i've had to do a game in a while
and they just kind of really really put that on it every two minutes on the story it's a little
much but thank you for the but it's just like i mean i'll be honest with rossi
we have a state of hand signs for our college teams most teams in the country don't have
hand signs. When I went to Minnesota,
I was living there, I was like,
what do y'all do for the gophers, put hands on? Like,
what are you talking about hand signs? Same thing
in Utah. I was doing Utah games. Like, what are you talking about?
I said, well, TCU's got one,
Baylor's got one, Houston's got one,
A&M's got one, Texas has one.
They're like, handsign. What do you need hand signs
for? So maybe we're just
a handsy state. Yeah, I don't know.
I think the first was the Aggies
with their thumb up.
And that's cool, I guess.
Yeah.
So maybe we're just, we just need to represent our hands more.
So that's what they, throwing the H is up.
Yeah.
I would say it's definitely got more popular in the last 10 years.
It's been something for a while.
Oh yeah.
Probably.
Yeah.
It's what the hip-hop community met.
Yeah, I'm not, I'm not an age.
I mean, I love Houston.
Matter of fact, I spend more time defending us than that I want to ever do.
I was a dinner with a friend last night that's not living here that doesn't live here.
He's like, so explain this to me.
I'm like, relax.
Okay.
We're just a little bit different.
We are.
He's like, y'all's don't ever show up on time for sporting events.
I said, yeah, I know.
Well, relative to other markets, there is oftentimes a lack of sports passion.
Yeah, yeah.
But if you're listening now, you're passionate about sports, and we appreciate you.
And that's what I'm worried about.
I'm worried about the passionate sports fans.
I don't care about what they do in the D.
If they throw the D up or not.
Hmm.
You don't throw an A up in Austin, do you?
No, it's hook of horns.
Do people in the Philadelphia throw up their pee?
Which I believe started with shadow puppetry.
Oh, is that right?
In Philadelphia, do they throw up their pee?
10.30.
Sports Talk 7-9. Just asking.
Disappointing.
I'm just, yeah, I don't know.
Disappointing.
I'm not worried about the H.
I'm not worried about the H teams.
How about that?
Yeah, Cal McNair is throwing up the H.
That's all you need to know.
Did he get slimmed on the TV broadcast?
Did he?
I know Joe Mixon did on the Nickelodeon broadcast.
Yeah.
Did you watch any of it?
I didn't watch one second.
I didn't because I was on the plane flying back from Atlanta for the first quarter.
And then I got in the car, listened to the second quarter and then watched the second half.
And I didn't, I didn't even forgotten it was on Nickelodeon until that stuff was showing up.
I mean, I wonder what the ratings were for that.
Did a bunch of kids go, man, SpongeBob is doing color commentary this?
I mean, I don't know what the cost benefit analysis says on that.
How much does it cost them to put that on?
And then how much does it help them?
You're trying to get kids in the NFL, I guess?
Well, they're trying to get them.
They're trying to get them at a young age, for sure.
I don't know.
1031, Sports Talk, 790, 713, 21, 2, 5, 790.
If you're not throwing up the H's but still want to talk about the H, we'll do it here at Sports Talk 790.
Yeah, I was getting my D's mixed up.
Texans on three, one, two, three.
Back to Battle Red Ross and Liberty white-ass Matt Thomas.
What up, what up?
That is what I am.
Real Pale Texans Talk continues on the Matt Thomas.
show.
What up?
What up?
It doesn't matter what you talk about all week.
It doesn't matter what you said or who's supposed to be who.
You got to go out there and put it on tape.
So if there's a bad play, God willing, you get another chance to make a good one.
So I think that's what we just did.
It just took it literally one player at a time.
And then you look up at the scoreboard when the game's over and you win the game.
So I put a poor question up.
And it was very early.
It was like literally after we found out that the chiefs,
Chiefs were going to be the Texans opponent.
By the way, that Pittsburgh Baltimore game.
Ugh.
Wolf.
Yeah, it's got a little bit expected.
Well, we kind of got excited for like five minutes when Denver scored on their opening possession.
And then that game turned to a wolf.
Man, it's so funny.
We are so prisoner of the moment and it's even worse with social media.
Like, after that touchdown, there are like draft people I follow, like, fantasy people.
NFL people like, see,
Bo Nix, I told you all guys,
Bo Nix is the truth, and then he was
horrible the rest of the game,
and they didn't score again.
The first quarter, and I think
like Mike Floreo does this
all the time, like trying to dunk on stuff in the
first quarter, like how stupid and short-sighted
can you be? Things can change.
Things can turn.
And they did in a big way, and the bills
dominated that game, 31-27.
Yeah, it was bad. All right.
So the poll question is, think about what you thought about
the Texans postseason before they embarrassed
the Chargers. So what was your mentality
about the Texans?
My mentality was they were going to beat the Chargers.
And they're going to win
with their defense if they're going to win games.
Okay, so you had them beating the Chargers.
Yes. They were going to probably play the Chiefs.
Yes. And then you had thought
before the pre-season
what was going to happen with Texans and Chiefs.
I figured they would lose to the Chiefs. Okay. And
I don't know if you've changed your opinion.
At this point, I still feel like they're going to lose.
Now after the game, and with Casey,
see next week how you're feeling i have 535 votes you get four hours four and a half hours left to
vote on this if you want to okay it's 50 50 down the middle usually anything texans anything
houston sports related probably lean 70 30 to the positive side i was gonna say negative
for it depending you know man i'm saying it's okay who do you who do you like okay so
while there is excitement and there should be because you beat the chargers are good you beat
good football team. They weren't fluky
getting in the playoffs.
And it wasn't a fluky game. They were the number one
long card. It wasn't a fluky game either
over the weekend. Like you beat them down.
You beat them. In all three phases.
Absolutely.
So right now, the poll
has it at 50-50, and it's been
50-50 just about the entire way.
You think, I don't think 70%
of people would think that they're going to beat the Chiefs.
But I'm saying in typical, usually you
put something up. If I had to put Astros
nationals, 70% would have said,
all the Astros are going to beat the Nationals.
Yeah, but the Chiefs are a much better football team than the Texans.
That's different to me.
The Texans are favorite.
The Astros have been favorites.
First of all, this is very unscientific.
Second of all, it's really homerific if you lean towards that direction.
I'd say 50-50 is homerific.
Result, they open to eight and a half point dogs.
Now, it's dropped a little bit, right?
I see anywhere between seven and a half and eight is what I've been saying.
I wish they had legal betting.
I would as, I already said, I mean, via text to people.
people like eight and a half i'm on texans all day seven and a half feels a little bit right now it's uh it opened
at uh seven and a half and it right now is against the ESPN bed is seven and a half and you have to
lay 115 so slightly that's basically close to an eight i would still at this moment i mean we'll
think about it as the week goes along i would still take the texans plus seven and a half they went there
a few weeks ago and they were three and a half point dogs yeah um over under is 41 and a half
and if you were to go
to a sports book
legally of course
and bet the Texans to
straight up win the game,
not even with points
what they call money line win
you get almost three and a half
to your $1.1.
Yeah, that's a stay away for me.
Now conversely
if you think the chiefs,
this is how things are weird,
if you think the chiefs are going to win
but can't cover the seven and a half
so they win 23, 22.
money line them.
You want to money line them.
It's a minus $450.
You've got to spend $4.50 to win $100.
Yeah, that's called Vig, obvious.
That's where the books win.
So the real number is in between.
So it's about 4 to 1.
So that gives the Texans about a 20% chance.
4 to 1 is 20%.
Yeah.
And I'm not a super big percentage guy.
But if you said the Texans play the Chiefs 10 times in Kansas City,
could they win two times?
Yes.
Absolutely.
They could.
Right.
Could one of them be.
Saturday at 3.30.
That's what you're hoping.
That's what you're hoping for.
Real faster go to the phones.
So I went to look for the airfare.
As I told you, Schmiden's over about 900,000.
Okay.
Dark Breast was like...
900,000?
900 or 1,000 for the round trip.
Dark breast is looking at about 700,
but that was as of about 5 o'clock yesterday.
So maybe anything's bought up there.
It's a 12-hour drive.
It's not 10.5 you go fast.
It's not 11 if you catch break.
It's 12 hours.
Yeah.
Now, from what I understand,
the ticket brokers,
there may not be as much,
I think there's maybe a little bit of,
we've been there done this.
There's also probably some weather issues.
It's going to be in the 20s for the game.
I'm good.
You might be able to get in the stadium at Arrowhead.
A lot of their fans are still recovering
from the frostbite they got like last year.
And I, you know, I remember I went to Arrowhead for the first time this year.
Now, granted, it was for U of H. Kansas.
so it wasn't for a Chief's game.
They're in a bad seat in the house.
Okay, really.
So even if you're way in the upper deck, you're not, there's no obstruction.
It's a clear view of the facility, of everything on the field.
You're not having to look around somebody.
I mean, it's, I mean, it's a typical 1975 built football, whatever it was, football saying that just got enormous amounts of seats.
I imagine it's not going to be flush with Texans fans.
Yeah.
So let's say we did this on the cheap.
Let's say we got tickets at about
125 a pop
Is that how much they're going for?
I'm just throwing that out.
Okay, I'll go find that.
Want me to find the get-in price?
Yeah, let's take a phone call before you do that.
Let's talk to, and we'll see if we can figure this out
and see what would afford it would be to cost us to get there.
Quickly, by the way, get in at the championship as of Friday when I was looking.
2000, at the college football championship.
You weren't going to go.
2,200, get in.
That'd have been the same of Texas was there.
I was thinking about it.
Oh, my God.
Hi, Pete, Alvin.
You're on 790.
Good morning to you.
Hey, fellas.
Good.
I grew up in Dallas, not a Cowboys fan, since I gave up on when Jimmy Johnson left and the way he was treated.
I just had enough of it and started reading for the Texans when they opened up in 2002.
I think I know where the H-town thing came from.
It was, according to people in Dallas, it was the officials in Austin, the government,
naming the two biggest towns in Texas, Big D and H-Town.
and then I think the owner
the owner's husband and wife
of the Texans this past off season
used it for marketing
with their new alternate uniforms
that's what I got the story for them
Yeah I you know
Everybody's got their own story about or thank you for the phone copy
Everybody's going to have their story where it originated
To me the first person I ever saw throw the H's up was my friend Bunn
B, yes
And then after that
Let me tell you something.
Bunn is the epitome of cool.
So anything Bun does, I ain't complaining about that,
but I don't need other folks doing it.
It just getting appropriated by the McNair's.
That looks corny.
Yeah.
You should just throw your fists up.
Whenever you get to take a picture with a boxer,
be like, you know, like Ringo Star,
the greatest arm of all time, puts up peace and love signs all the time.
Be like me doing it all the time.
Matt, you're not Ringo Star.
You're not the greatest arm of all the time.
all time. Oh dear. He's not anywhere
close to the greatest drummer of all time.
In your mind.
Point being, some people have
sand signs that are there, so I'm doing this to irritate
you. There are some people that
have signs you just let them have
them. Bunby, if you're listening,
what you do sometimes, and for that, I love you for that.
Yeah. The H's is you.
Everybody else, it looks
corny.
Okay. That's all I got. Thank you, Matt.
Thank you.
All right, so we're going to... The arbiter of all things cool. Matt
Thomas. Weekday, send it to
two. Boy, the Matt Thomas
with Ross. All right, so we're going to figure out how much
going to cost for anybody to go to Kansas City.
Okay? Can you do Kansas City on
the cheap? We'll have the details on this next. Plus,
we're going to continue to hear from sound. Coming up
1130, Domingo is going to speak to the media. We'll have that
for you the news at noon. We have to tell the truth
at 1230 and believe it or not at 150.
So a busy show today. We want you guys involved
at 713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Right now, I want to tell you about the
folks at the Shell Federal Credit Union.
These are wonderful people that have said, Matt, please tell them what your experience was
like.
And it was outstanding when I got an auto loan from ShellFCU.
And you can get it to buy simply going to shellfcU.org.
That's shellfcU.org.
Right now, auto loan rates are as low as 3.99% on a 36-month note.
You can also get a couple of skip of pays a year.
You'll get $250 in cash back.
And deferred payments is certainly an option.
all on a new vehicle, a pre-owned vehicle, or you want to refinance a vehicle that you're currently
in. Do me a favor. Just go to shellfcU.org and get the process started. ShellfcU.org. For the Shell Federal
Credit Union, for a new, used, or refinance of a vehicle that you're currently driving,
get that auto loan today from the Shell Federal Credit Union, ShellfcU.org.
Matt and Ross returned. Return on Sports Talk 790.
Early in the game and like me went through the game, you know, we had some plays, you know, that broke down.
But I fly out as the game started getting along, you know, those guys started getting tired and we were just getting started.
So, you know, in the fourth quarter, we was able to control the game by running the ball.
They couldn't stop us.
They couldn't stop us up front.
They couldn't stop Joe.
So, I mean, we can lean out there for the rest of the playoffs because we know CJ is going to come, you know, ready to play every game.
And him and Nico's the play he made, the hutch.
You know, it was fantastic.
So we can build all that.
Any excuse for Connor to play?
This guy, J.T.
Yes, buddy.
It works out well.
All right, that's enough about that.
Can't talk about that anymore.
J.T. got the hits.
I mean, Titus, I'm just glad you're able to visit with the media after you're really,
frankly, your worst game is on the offensive line.
But everything else worked all right?
Did Lernermy get any penalties?
I don't think Lerick got any penalties.
No, he did give up a sack to Kalee Mack.
But you know what?
Back.
Sometimes Kalil Mac greater than the person in front of him.
You know what I mean?
That's what it was.
All right.
So I went to the Maps app.
It's 11 hours.
I think I said 12.
It's 11 hours.
You got to stop for gas.
To Kansas City.
So yeah, you got to stop.
You got to eat the Buckees in Madisonville.
Buckies.
You got the loves in Oklahoma.
So you're looking at probably eat gas 12 and a half hours.
Yeah, 12 and a half hours.
A couple of rounds of blackjack at the Minsmar.
Ooh.
Right up there north of the state border?
Oh my gosh, yeah.
Okay, let's be consistent.
Focus.
Let's go 13 hours.
Okay.
Two hours of bathroom, gas, and food.
Yes.
Okay.
I'm going to put you at a hotel, probably in Kansas City, country club area.
A lot of shops, a lot of restaurants, not necessarily a five-star.
I'll go.
What is the Pallasan equivalent?
I'll go stay there.
there's a Ruri Inn right next to Arrowhead Stadium.
I think it's a Rurie Inn.
What? A Rurie in.
You having a stroke?
No, that would stroke.
Rurian?
Rurian.
We have a Rurian down the street.
We have a Rurian down the street from our office here.
I know what you're talking about.
So what's the gas on that?
How many times do you fill up?
At least twice.
I can go 400 miles.
for $35 in my car.
What if you got a messel,
I need to just recharge.
Oh, you're going to, then you're going to add multiple hours of your trip.
Yeah, so you're damned if you do, Dan, if you don't.
So what's the gas going to cost us for the whole trip?
I don't know, 150.
Oh, a brown trip?
Brown trip.
Let's do $300.
I don't know.
A total guess.
$300 in gas.
Hotel will put it two nights at $125.
Okay.
That's what tax.
So it's another $250.
It's $5.50.
you got to eat
Yeah
You got to buy
Is that free breakfast at the Rourri?
Free breakfast at Rourri
That's good
Lunch is at a fast food
Dinner is at a
Casual like a
Like a release
Or a rash burger
No
No that's fast food
It's fast casual
Like if you're going to
Boobie Ruse days
Oh Jesus
I hate this rhyming
Too late
Stuck everybody's head
No, you're going to Kansas City.
You want to get some ribs or something.
Oh, yeah, you've got to have one good Kansas City meal.
Yeah.
I mean, even if you want to do it on the cheap, Rossi, you're still looking at a...
Now, by the way, you know you have the ticket prices.
Get in price is $184.
Literally the back row of the top section.
If you want...
Sweet tickets are going to cost you about $1,300.
That's with the heat.
Now, Taylor's going to be one of those sweets.
So you may get a chance to get a glimpse of her.
Taylor.
Oh.
Not Taylor, you know our Taylor.
No, don't say ours.
She's our Taylor.
She's not mine.
She is ours.
I'm not affiliated with her in any way.
You know, bottom level of the end zone, you can get for $350.
Let's say two of those, $700.
You're still looking at $5,7, 12, 14.
Plus parking playoff, parking is going to be expensive.
You're looking at...
Oh, no, you take Uber.
Because you're getting smashed hammered at the game.
But the Ubers are going to run expensive at the sporting events.
Are you looking...
Can you do it on the relative cheap for about two...
grand? Probably. That's minimum. So the question is, would you spend two grand and 13 hours each
direction? No. You could leave Friday. You could like knock off work early Friday. Listen to us.
You leave work at noon. You'll be there about 1 a.m. Take a nap. Take turns driving with somebody.
But you still have to, but you have to still get a room. Yeah. I was going to say if you're going to leave,
you might as well get to the, you might as well get to the, you know, you'll be there.
You might as well leave it and take a whole Friday off.
Get up there and at least get a good night's rest.
Come back Sunday.
Yeah.
That's a lot.
Dude, I mean, I know somebody will do it.
Yeah.
I'm sure some people are.
And there are some rich Texans fans that will say, you know what, screw it.
I will fly Meltta if I have to.
Oof.
Go through Atlanta.
Melta through Atlanta.
By the way, on Atlanta on Friday, they canceled over a thousand flights.
If weather hits bad in Atlanta, Georgia and you're flying Melta, good luck.
24 degrees supposed to be at this moment, Saturday.
I'm good.
I think what you do is you go home, you turn your heater on, maybe cold here or two,
and you go to the grocery store and you go spend 50 bucks on cold beverages and food and call today.
Yeah.
And get your big HD screen out and watch it that way.
Get some little smokies and some barbecue sauce, toss them in the crock pot and have yourself a Saturday.
Throw some cards.
Yeah.
Okay.
You play little spades?
You know, the kids are playing spades now.
The kids have been playing spades for decades.
Yeah, but I mean, I didn't realize my 17-year-old was, oh, can I give you a quick spades conversation very fast?
This is a one minute.
I swear we'll get back to the game.
I'm sorry, Connor.
When we played in college, we would go around, you played on opposite teams.
Let's say you and I were on a team.
Okay.
I would look at my cards and I would say, Ross, I've got three in a possible.
Yeah.
And the next person would say, and you'd say, well, I have two in a possible.
And that's it.
We'll bid six then.
Carly, my 17-year-old, says, what is this possible baloney?
I've heard of possible, but it's not, and not everybody plays like that.
Okay.
And I was like, I know people have played spades before and said possibles.
She's just like, dad, that's cheating.
I'm like, it's not cheating.
It's what I, you ask how many big you, how many, you.
you can get and you say I had three in a possible.
And then you pull a raw, she go, three in a possible.
Or you go three in a possible.
Possible.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, I got you.
But she was just, she was, she was, she was born and I'm mad at me for doing that.
Okay.
But I'm playing with your mother.
We need some help here.
Because Kim does a lot of great things.
Playing card is not one of our strong suits.
That's fine.
I'm a good Spades player.
Oh, are you?
Yeah.
A spades ace.
Matt Thomas.
The Ace of Spades.
So if y'all want to come to the-
New nickname for you now.
So Saturday, you can't come to the house.
I'll be in Portland.
But next weekend I'm home home.
We come to the house.
I'm out of practice.
In high school, I was probably decent,
but I haven't played Spades regularly.
We're playing Spades all the time now.
Yeah.
So there you is.
I just want to make sure
that the possible thing was something
I just didn't make up.
Because I was taught the way you could say,
you could say three and possible, three-and-
I've heard of it, but it's not common.
It's not something I've heard.
Okay.
All right.
There's your card talk for the day.
lot. Thank you, Matt. We've given you card talk.
We've figured out how much this is going to cost you
go to Kansas City. I got another one for you. Yeah.
Do you have to call Uno when you have one and when
you win? Not when you win, just when you have one.
Okay. Some people will fight you.
But man, I will pounce on you if you don't say Uno at one.
I will yell at you. You get no saving grace.
Some people make you do it for the win and they get mad
and they say you didn't win. Really? Yeah. I had not
heard that. That's what I'm saying, man. You got to let
lay the house rules down before the game.
Because fights will break out.
Okay, you come to my house.
You can say possible when you're playing spades and you don't have to say you know it twice.
And by the week, we will also be throwing dice in the back corner.
713.
It's something.
It's like, do all that stuff.
And unlimited loans from the bank and monopoly.
There you go.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
We have got more on the Texans, really an outstanding, super-impressive performance.
Can it translate to Saturday in Kansas City?
I mean, the optimist in you says it hopefully has that the real Texans showed up,
because that was the real Texans.
That was the most dominant performance they had.
Even over the Buffalo game earlier this year,
even though the games against Dallas and New England were blowouts, that was domination.
More on that.
Plus, we're going to figure out what the hell happened with Ross's Longhorns
and that goal line offense.
11 o'clock on Sports Talk 790.
Lunch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
You'll hear from D'Amico Ryan's coming up in one half hour here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
He will be speaking in the media.
He's Texans, your Texans, American Texans.
We'll be playing a game at 3.30 on Saturday against Kansas City.
Are you ready to spend 2Gs going or do you just want to sit back?
I'm good.
I've got responsibilities here.
You only got pregame on rockets on Saturday.
It's a late start.
That's true.
I've got to get pregame.
I mean, I've got to keep an eye on my lemon treats.
It's, the cold's really taking a toll on.
We're supposed to get a cold on this week too from what I'm saying.
Matt.
Got to wrap her up and water her properly.
1103.
713-212-5-7-90.
7-1-3-2-1-2-7-9-0.
I don't know much more.
Look, the game was a couple days ago.
We've all had a chance to digest a little bit.
And you have a form here on this show.
You can do that.
And the other shows in town don't care about talking to you.
We do.
We like to talk to you.
I'm still riding high, Matt.
You should be.
Battle Red Ross feeling good.
I mean, it wasn't the worst thing to think the Texans could win the game
because the Chargers don't have this distinct playoff history.
I mean, what's his face?
Herbert only been in one playoff game.
So it wasn't like you're going to a battle tested team like obviously you got with Kansas City.
But the Chargers just didn't show up.
I mean.
Well, they were up 6-0 until when, the middle of the second.
Yeah.
and then the defense was out there a long time,
and CJ made some throws.
That 99-yard drive.
That was really...
To put them up 70-6.
I think the Hutchinson catch was the one that was just like,
this isn't our day.
That's when it felt like a, yeah, a switch was flipping.
That's when they, that was the drive they went up 7 to 6.
And how many times it will,
Anderson's name, get brought up in the first half alone in that game?
I mean, he was the saving grace of that squad.
I also think it's probably a bad idea to let him go through
completely unblocked chargers.
And then
You're right?
I'm okay.
I'm excited.
And then of all people to get the pick six,
Eric Murray, who has been
I mean, basically largely said
just a guy.
He's been picked on, honestly, by the other teams.
Right.
But he's feeling better about himself.
Yes.
And that was a very poorly thrown football.
Derek Stingley had a good evening.
Yep.
Kamari Lasseter.
First team all pro, Derek Stangley,
with a great day.
He did.
He was fantastic.
Camar Lasser was good.
Al-Sahir was good.
Harry Toa Toa was in there.
I mean, all your familiar buddies and friends.
Yeah, a lot of talk about Rishon Slater and Joe Alt be one of the best tackle tammons in football,
and they each gave up four pressures.
So, I mean, the Texan defense got it done.
Yeah.
And C.J. Stroud was good enough.
Yeah.
I mean, he made a lot of good throws.
So if you were to say, how does this, how do you take what you saw Saturday and translated
to next Saturday?
The same Texans.
pressure. Now,
Herber's, I mean, look, Mahomes,
I don't think it's going to make the same type of mistakes that Herbert made.
I'm going to agree Pat Mahomes is better than Justin Herbert.
You're going to probably have to
even put even more pressure to force Mahomes out of his comforts on.
Although every time somebody says that, he just wants to
turning to his left, thrown to his right, and finally these incredible
catches. I would think probably would it be fair to say
Texans' offense has to be better than it was this past Saturday?
Yes. I mean, again, you went up against
the best scoring defense in football, I think it was with the Chargers.
So again, you're going up against another tough defense.
So to me, the last couple of years, that's what the Chiefs have been winning with,
is with their defense and not as many, you know, back in the day when it was Tyree Kill and Prime Travis Kelsey and stuff like that.
Yeah.
So I think there's a lot of things to be encouraged about today should be a celebratory day.
We'll start thinking about the Texans letter this week now.
You go on a Kansas City radio show all the time.
I do. Hopefully it'll be on this week.
And your buddy came out with us.
We came on when you were gone. Oh, he did?
So you're going to set up the contact. We need to get sor on the show on Friday.
Okay. I'll see if he's available.
He'd be available. He's very busy.
Not that busy.
Big time. This is the radio show. I don't know that else.
I think he starts at two, so it should work out.
Oh, yeah, it works out. He was on this last time.
Now we got a bad connection, so we didn't get a better connection this time.
Oh, really? It's probably our fault.
I mean, not, no, probably. It was definitely our fault.
Okay.
So we will get a little perspective on that.
We have a national championship game one week from 10.
Today?
Yes.
That won't involve your...
Yeah, we've got to bring you football.
No, that's it.
Just a little bit.
Let's move on.
Go ahead.
And I know you want to justify the play call,
but you'd probably be the only one.
What are you talking about?
Nobody's like, that was a good play call.
It just wasn't executed proper.
Where did I say it was a good play call?
We were in the prep room earlier.
Yeah, in the prep room, I said what they did was they admitted that they couldn't line up.
Mm-hmm.
So you probably, again, my...
You couldn't line up with Ohio.
state. The interior of the line hadn't been good.
Where's Arch, by the way? Why was an Arch out there?
Absolutely. I'm with you. I don't know where Arch
could ever should have been. Maybe it's
because he almost fumbled.
I don't think that's it. And then
he had fumbled before, I think. So
maybe Sark was a little bit worried about
turnover possibilities.
But, I mean, just sneak it twice. Just put Arch
in there and sneak the ball.
I think a toss sweep.
And I have no evidence of this because
I just have to take immense amount of time.
Well, what we saw was the absolute
worst case scenario. You lost eight yards
on that play. But why would you toss
sweep from the one
when your quarterback's already in shotgun, put you
at the four, then the toss would put you
to the seven or eight? You're then having to
ask your running back to get a, to really
amp it up for six, seven yards to get the one yard.
Yeah, at the very least, like
fake it, put a lineup in an eye formation,
fake a full back dive and then
toss it out, try to get the linebacker's a little
little bit off step. Well,
the easiest solution was, and this is all we can do
is because we're great second-guessers in life.
just put arch in an RPO.
Yeah.
I mean, even when they were tossing it outside,
it just, there's so much sideline to sideline speed on that Ohio State defense.
And it's hard anyways.
I mean, look, Ohio State was better than Texas.
Ohio State is more talented team overall than Texas.
It was the two most talented teams left in the field, in my opinion.
But they just weren't good enough.
The offensive line wasn't good enough.
And Quintravean Wisner is a decent running back,
but he wasn't ever supposed to be the number one all year long.
Well, look, you need to spend that Anna AL money on getting some running backs.
Well, C.J. Baxter is supposed to be back.
Okay.
Jaden Blue is declaring for the draft for whatever reason.
I guess he's getting some intel that he's supposed to be drafted.
And we're still here.
The lean right now is for Quinn Ewers to go to the draft.
That's what, Pete Thammo, he got an interview with Pete Thammell before the game, that they aired before the game.
And he said, do you expect to be in college football?
And he said, I don't expect to be.
So that wasn't, some people were selling it.
It got sensationalized by clickbait headline people.
Quinn Ewer's declares for the draft.
No, that's not him declaring for the draft because he kind of left a little wigger.
He's like, I don't expect to be.
So if Carson Beck gets four milly, that's what I'm saying.
To go to Miami.
Are we supposed to believe that Quinn's getting six to go somewhere to an unnamed school at this point?
Maybe.
I mean, you tell me, is he, is Quinn Ewers worth $6 million?
I'll stick with my gut feeling.
I expect him to
Well, I'll stick with my gut feeling
or my, I think my to tell the truth.
If Quinn Ewers is getting $6 million
to play next season in college football,
he needs to stay in college football.
Now, whether he's getting that or not,
it remains to be seen.
But his professional contract
will not be worth $6 million.
Unless he's a second round.
He'd have to be in the second round or better,
which I don't expect,
but people reach on quarterbacks all the time.
Well, it's also because they can also,
he can also have.
an impressive combine to you never know.
I don't know. All right.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-2-1-790.
This is the Matt Thomas show of Ross.
We will hear from Domingo Ryan's coming up in about 20 minutes right now.
Jacob is with us here on the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
7-13-212-5-79.
Hello, Jacob.
Yeah, what up?
And I told you I was going to be double digits.
I said 2817.
You did, Jacob, you did.
Yeah, I said 2817.
their 14, where you like at 11, they even, they even get the 17 points.
I knew it.
I don't know what people are looking at.
Far as when they come to their defense.
My man was hurt.
They said he spared or the head spirit or whatever he did.
And they, they, they, they, they, they, you know what I mean?
He's coming back from a suspension.
Oh, boy, he was a drug, for drugs, they kicked him out for, their defense is the guys, man.
and the rookie. Let me tell you who
turned the game around. I was the rookie.
When CJ made
that turnover and it came back
in the red zone
and he got the next play
he got out, he got an interception.
That flipped the whole defense. Then the defense
was charged. Then Stingley got his
and then they caught up.
I'm telling you. First of all,
Herbert was overrated. And like I was telling you, man,
them days over them guys.
Look who left in the playoffs now.
You got to be dual-threatening.
Or you're not making it.
You're talking about, you be talking about your guy at Cincinnati, Joe,
forget about it, bro.
And plus he in there with Lamar.
You can just cancel him out.
He better go back to college, be like Beck.
Beck, the only reason why Beck left because of Chador and my man Ward,
and he was not, he didn't have a chance of being in the top.
So he's falling back, and he thinks next year he can come out.
He'd be the first or second quarterback selected.
And your boy in Texas, he neither, he needs to,
transfer like Beck, man, because he's going to do the same thing.
Because the way he came, he didn't come through for Texas.
He's not going to get picked up like that.
So maybe he can go transfer, get the bag somewhere else.
But the Texans are looking, and they can beat Cincinnati, bro.
I'm telling him they grew.
My man, you know, he ain't been having the best yet.
All the ding-dongs with the field goals, you know, they can put the pressure on him, man.
They ain't got the running game like the Texans and Lamar.
But now when they run into Lamont, it's going to be okay.
Lamar and Buffalo are going to go.
They're going to smash.
I can't wait till they beat Buffalo, the brakes are Buffalo.
All right, y'all.
I would like for those of you that just listen to that phone call to dissect that phone call.
If you are able to do so, that's Jacob, 713-212-5-790.
If you can dissect that phone call, call in and tell us what you think he said.
He said a lot.
It's all over the place.
And he was right.
He did call last week.
I told him he was crazy because he was talking about them winning by like 14.
Okay. I'm not worried about, I'm not worried about Friday's call. I'm worried about today's call.
Okay.
Break that down like a motor. All right.
713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90.

Sports Talk 790.
1119 on Sports Talk.
Oh,
uh, that's one.
They make you another one?
I say yes.
I don't know what the news is.
Now, five's the most, right?
Yes.
I'm going to give you
another one.
Three.
Okay, now I'm really intrigued.
Connor, it's definitely not a five.
Or maybe it is a five.
Do you think it's worth a fourth, Connor?
Really?
I actually don't know what it is either.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, you judge, Matt.
Hit it one more time.
Four?
Are you serious?
Is C.J. Stroud okay?
It's nothing involving a Houston sports team.
Oh, thank God.
I think Houston sports teams are five-star.
You have to leave it there.
Five others.
Okay.
Hit the music, please.
The greatest instrumental TV theme song in television history.
Disagree.
Mike McCarthy, out as Cowboys coach.
The sides could not agree on length of contract,
and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities.
He leaves Dallas with a winning record in three playoff appearances.
Worthy of four stars?
I would have win three.
Well, that's fine.
You're a big Cowboys guy.
You're a big guy.
Go back to Dallas Cowboys fan.
Whatever.
But I think it's the most.
most recognizable
sports team
next to the Yankees
basically.
They call themselves
America's team.
Yeah.
Even though they
haven't won a
Super Bowl in
over 30 years.
They're on
4 and 13
every year
they be on national
television six
times with
wholeace's rating.
So yeah,
I think it's a big
deal.
It's interesting.
I went,
my personal thought
was they should have
let him go
to, oh my God,
they're not going to
let him go to
I think you're
going to try to
to resign him,
which again,
that's his business.
Then the Chicago
Bears wanted
to talk to him
and then the
Cowboys said,
you're not allowed
to talk to our guy.
But now I believe starting tomorrow,
since he has no contract, he can talk to anybody.
That's right. Tomorrow he is,
I don't know why is the contract.
Why that's the date, but...
This makes me sad.
Because?
I don't think Mike McCarthy is a very good coach overall,
and now the Cowboys can actually be good.
Mike McCarthy, as their coach, puts a limit on them, I think.
To me, you can win with Mike McCarthy.
You're not going to win because of Mike McCarthy.
I mean, he is a Super Bowl winning coach.
Right.
And I think those teams won, not with Mike McCarthy,
because Aaron Rogers and those weapons and those players were really good.
So do you, and I'm not trying to overly simplify this.
Do you think that Mike McCarthy was drawn up plays and creating schemes?
And Aaron Rogers is like, look, I'm better than when anything that Mike McCarthy can throw at me.
I'm just going to improvise my way to a championship.
I think when you get...
I think it's a little, and I'm not saying it's a lot short-sight.
I'm saying it's a smid short-sighted.
Okay.
Well, I disagree with you.
Okay, good.
you can be a coach that's not great and you have great players and win a Super Bowl.
All right, let's go back.
Can we name a really...
I don't know, Barry Switzer with the Cowboys.
Let me go look at Super Bowl champions.
Now, he inherited that.
Yeah.
He won a Super Bowl winning coach.
But I think Mike Holmgren there before at in Green Bay before Mike McCarthy got there.
Okay.
Okay, Gary Kubiak and the Broncos.
Gary Kubiak, great Super Bowl winning.
coach or did they win because they had great defense?
Well, I mean, name a team that has had a great coach and lousy players when a Super Bowl.
It never happens.
Right.
But I...
Maybe my philosophy is this.
I think the job is too difficult to be just a guy that walks out there.
Like, I think, like, David Cully is never going to, would ever lead a team to a Super Bowl.
What if you were stacked with, like, 12 pro bowlers?
If David Cully was coaching this Ravens team this year, I don't know.
How many games?
It depends.
but I'm saying of course both matter
but I think you have coaches
I think Andy I think Bill Belichick
brought the Patriot's to New Heights
or brought them over the hump
on many occasions
But Belichick's number one thing is
he never won without Tom Brady
Yeah that's true he never won a Super Bowl
without Tom Brady but they won 10 games
with Mac Jones they won 11 games with Matt Castle
I'll just say this
I think we're maybe just arguing semantics
I just will
I don't know I'll ever say
my God how is this guy winning
he must be completed
idiot.
I mean, Barry Switzer is a good example of going to Dallas and inheriting all that, but
Barry Switzer was a very successful, super successful Oklahoma coach.
Yeah, and then he was washed out in the NFL.
How about Doug Peterson with the Eagles?
Doug Peterson is incredible.
Now, the Philly Special Play was fun.
And they scored a lot of points in that game.
That was wild.
I don't know.
It feels like to me there have been.
very few, not saying impossible, but very few
overmatch head football coaches in the NFL level.
Like I said, I don't think he's overmatch necessarily.
I don't think he's a bumbling, I don't think Mike McCarthy is a bumbling fool.
Now, I'll agree with you on this.
Does Mike McCarthy take you to the next level because of his incredible schemes?
Probably not.
Yeah, that's what we're, that's what I'm saying.
But I, but if I, if Mike McCarthy was available, I would interview him.
Why the Cowboys letting him go then if he's so good?
Because they couldn't come across with a contract.
Why did the Chicago Bears ask for him?
Wouldn't they just pay him?
Why do the Chicago Bears ask him for him?
Yeah, they're asking to interview him.
Are they going to hire him?
I don't know.
Well, now they have to ask permission anymore.
They can just go talk to them.
They want to.
When's the last time the Chicago Bears, by the way, hired a good coach?
Well, I mean, Lovie Smith?
Yeah, like I said, what's the last time?
Dave wants that?
Like I said, man, Matt Iberfrews.
Ooh, whoofta.
Matt Nagy?
Damn.
Like I said.
You're running through a lot of Chicago coaches.
Dicka?
Yeah, Dickie was a great hot.
Dickie was a good coach.
Hey, Mike Dicka there.
Would you rather have a bad,
would you have a short Dicka running a good team or a good dick?
Hold on.
A good Dicka back coaching a bad team.
A hurricane or Mike Dicka.
Hold on.
The name of a hurricane is Hurricane Dicka.
Mike Dicka as a tight end when he was playing the NFL or Dicka yelling at you with a headset on.
Bears brassing up.
smartest in the land.
For a legacy franchise, too.
It's crazy.
Domingo speaks.

Welcome, good afternoon.
The best sports lunch in H-town.
Matt's really smart.
He works hard.
He has a good grasp of players.
He's been around the game.
You love him.
We love him.
So excited for the opportunity that Matt has in front of him for sure.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
All right.
Let's go to Damiko-R-Yans over at NRG.
changes to be tired.
Can you talk about the players and a coach's?
When you have struggles in a game, you know, player, coach, you know,
offensively, defensively special teams, it's a matter of just continue to stay persistent
and understand that that's why the games are four quarters.
You just have to stay the course and understand where those mistakes happen and how you can improve.
But it's a matter of everybody, continue to believe in each other.
and do the things we need to do to play well.
Everybody knows when you make mistakes or you're inconsistent
and know what the issues are.
It's just a matter of getting them fixed within game.
And we're fortunate to be able to overcome some mistakes that we had
in this last game with the turnovers.
We were able to answer, get some stops defensively.
Kamari is able to go and get a takeaway after one of them.
So just a matter of the team continue to play around each other,
that's how you overcome those.
like transforming.
Yeah, when you have the big play
as CJ made, it does
lift everyone.
I think just the energy,
the morale of the entire team,
even though it's not going great.
When you see that one play,
it sparked the energy,
spark the enthusiasm for our entire team,
and it was the difference maker for us
and our guys fed off of it.
Do we think of the first time
you watch Camari Lasseter and at Georgia
and just scores with some of the initial impressions
and now kind of what he's become?
And Kamari's been consistent.
He's a tough, hard-nosed player.
Old school, he's a corner who loves to play physical,
which is rare these days.
Kamari likes to tackle, and he brings a different intensity out on the perimeter
than most corners because of his physicality,
but also just his smart intelligence and his playmaking ability.
Can you talk about the opportunity your team has this week
to do something this franchise has never done if you can get a win?
We're excited about the opportunity we have.
We understand what's in front of us.
Great team.
KC has done a great job for the past few years of really dominating the league,
being there at the end.
I have great coaching staff, great players, great team all the way across the board.
So it's a really tough challenge for us.
We're excited about the opportunity we have versus KC.
We know it's a tough, tough team to beat.
It's going to take everything that we have.
is going to take all four quarters.
Similar to our last game,
we just have to stay the course,
remain persistent throughout the game,
and find a way to win in those critical moments.
If you guys faced Kansas City earlier,
like you said,
you were in that game.
It wasn't a game we dominated.
What do you take from that as you prepare
to go and face them this weekend?
Different game.
I don't take much from it.
There was a game that was that week.
You know, it's different circumstances
that happened in that particular week.
Now, it's a new,
new game for me.
Fresh start, new game, right?
We'll attack it just like it's our first time playing these guys again.
So we'll go in with the fresh set of eyes
and see the things we need to do to be better,
the things we need to do to close out the game.
And that's how I always go into each game with a fresh set of eyes
not really harping on a lot of what happened in the previous game.
You talk about defending every plate of grass on the field.
When it comes to depending Packermer homes and all the angles
and the things he does to create passing lanes.
What are some of the special challenges of trying to have counter him?
Whenever you're tasked with playing 11-on-11 football
with the quarterback who is able to run the ball,
it just presents different challenges.
Like you have to be sticky in coverage.
You have to plaster.
That's the thing you think you cover guys once
and the play is still going on.
And you have to look to cover them twice.
So guys have to be very disciplined when you're playing.
coverage versus Mahomes because we know his
escapability and not
just him running the ball but also
the threat of the run and him still
being able to keep his eyes down field and
make passes. Guys are
wide open a lot on their
film because of the threat
that he poses and he just
requires so much attention because
he's such an elusive
guy in the pocket. He's such
a, man, a
unique playmaker with the different
angles and the way he can throw the football the
way he gets the ball out, whether it's underarm, sidearm, however he wants to get it out,
he has the confidence to get the ball to his playmakers.
Derek has a unique ability to track balls in the air.
What do you think about that ability in him?
And is it going to remind you of anything you.
Yeah, Derek, Derek has done a great job all year of, you know, when people challenge him down
the field, he has a great ability to track the football and go make the play.
Not many guys have that ability to track the football.
That's why a lot of guys play DB because they can't catch it.
But Derek does a good job of playing with great awareness
but also having great hands to finish the play and make teams pay.
It's obvious what Joe brings this team on the field.
Everyone gets that.
But off the field, his mentality, what does he bring this team just to his mental state in between weeks?
Joe provides confidence as he brings it every week.
Like the way he goes about his business, like what he has to say to the guys all throughout the week, he provides confidence.
Like you see a confident guy who's trying to exude that confidence off on his teammates.
And that's what he brings.
Confidence, he brings positive energy to everyone.
And that's what you need at this point in time of the year.
Like you have to believe first and foremost.
And Joe brings that belief.
And if you don't have it, you hear him talk.
you'll get it really quickly.
How much of a boost is it to have a special teams unit that makes the kind of big plays like your husband doing for you this year?
Special teams just came up.
He came up big for us making some impact plays.
Anytime special teams can affect the game where it's taking the ball away, blocking a kick.
It changes the game drastically.
And our guys have made some plays throughout the year, whether it's, uh,
executing the fake punt, you know, blocking kicks, getting great returns.
It's all about winning that hitting yardage battle,
and our special teams has done a really good job all year of that.
Coach, another chance to speak with some of the players after the game.
And it's the same.
As far as the last two weeks is concerned,
they've been talking about how good the practices have been,
heading into the Tennessee game, heading into this wildcard game.
Was there anything different, or did you just see that, you know,
Joe even told us there's not a lot of duo for,
that we have to do like we, you know, previously earlier in the season.
What was it about these practices that was different?
With our practices, the past couple weeks,
the difference for me has been how locked in our guys have been.
When our guys work the right way, it shows up in the game.
We have practices where we're doing a lot of repeats or guys are not quite on it.
Like, it shows up, the inconsistency to show up in the game.
So for me, I've always been a stickler for the work you put in,
throughout the week, it'll show up in some way, some form of fashion on game day.
So I just always implore our guys to our first day out.
Like there's no time to waste.
There's no wasted reps.
We don't need to waste time when we're in practice because all those things will show up later in the week.
So it's important to me that we work the right way.
And when I talk about being relentless and effort and all the physicality and all the things that I preach to our guys,
I want to see it throughout the week.
When we exhibit that throughout the week, it helps us to play better on game day.
A lot of the big names are going to stand out, of course, from this game with C.J., Joe, Dico, Will, you know, Derek.
But what about those guys who also contributed like a Miles Bryant, like a DeAngelo Ross, like an Eric Murd?
When you went back and you watched the tape, what stood out to you about that?
Going back and watching the tape versus the charges.
I could name everybody on our team, right, who stood out, who contributed, and we're a big part of us playing well in that game.
First, I think up front, I challenge our defensive line to play well and Foley, him being back, and that was the reason why we played well in the run game.
I thought he impacted the game there.
Aziz making a huge play on a third and two, physical play, getting him the fourth down, Aziz.
Henry was consistent with where he was supposed to be.
all day in coverage, Miles Bryant stepping in playing nickel.
He helped us with guys just with the communication,
getting guys aligned, being where they have to be,
and him just being able to do his job consistently.
A lot of guys all across the board helped us to win this game.
And that's what team football is about.
And that's what you need now going down the stretch.
You need everybody to contribute.
And I always tell our guys, like our best players have to play their best.
And if you consider yourself our best player, then we need your best.
And that's all everybody who suits up is our best player, all 48 guys who suit up.
So I need everyone's best.
We need everyone's best so we can go out and compete at the highest level.
I don't know what your relationship has been with Andy Reid over the years.
But you're kind of up through the ranks before you landed this job.
What have you admired most about what he's been able to accomplish specifically there in Kansas City?
What I've admired most about Andy is the consistency.
in which he's led his teams.
As he doesn't change in his approach, it's been effective.
Guys love to play for Andy.
I love playing for Andy.
He's a great head coach, smart coach, puts his players in positions to thrive.
You see him kind of tailor the offense to fit Patrick's abilities,
and it's worked out well for him.
He's been very successful.
He has a lot of good coaches around him as well.
Andy does a great job of just finding a way to win.
Whatever it takes to win games, Andy's going to find a way to do that.
And that's why he's been one of the most successful coaches in our game.
Do you talk a little bit about there's a lot of credit given to your guys up front on the end.
When you mentioned folk, just the work that you get from that entire front,
the guy like to be go, the whole front seven.
This is the first time you've had, I guess, that whole front starting seven.
Is that what you envision this team?
starting the season.
Seeing all of our, what was it, all nine guys we have on the defensive line who are up on game day,
they all help in some form of fashion.
When it comes to the run game specifically, like the run game isn't stopped without our detackles, right?
And that's Foley, there's Mario, Tim Settle, Tommy stepping in, De Nicos, like all those guys contribute.
And with them playing with great awareness, they're smart players.
So that allows us to play.
It's not just, you know, firing off the ball, playing blind.
Like, they play with great awareness,
and they put us in position to make a lot of plays in the run game by eliminating space.
So that D-Line, it's about a collective effort from all those guys and them working together.
I know a lot of praise goes to our edge rushers with Will and De Nile,
but a lot of those things that they're able to do is set up by the guys on the inside.
So the way those guys continue to work together and feed off of each other,
It'll be important to our success moving forward.
DiMico, Nico Collins, had a big game.
Actually, except for record passing the other Hopkins.
How much do you need from the other guys to compliment him
and do a little more than what you had against the Charters?
Very proud of Nico for what he's been able to accomplish this all year.
Everything that he's done, you know, even when everyone knows the ball is going to him,
he still makes the play.
So excited for him and just his trajectory as a pro,
and he's done an outstanding job this entire year.
And, you know, when it comes to other guys around them, for us, it's just about how we need to move the football and gain yards.
Whoever is tasked with getting the ball, just want guys to protect the ball and we'll press forward.
It really doesn't matter.
If you get it, do your best with the football.
So much.
Go ahead.
Obviously, you're a tactical machine.
But now, as a superintendent, you're obviously deep as tough as well, but they take the ball away a lot.
What is the biggest reason we're in respect to why you guys are able to have these games
and you force multiple interceptions on some of the best quarterbacks?
We're able to force a lot of takeaways because we have a lot of good players.
It's not about me.
It's about the players out there making the plays.
And guys have done an outstanding job.
That's one of our main thing that we go into every week is talking about attacking the football,
taking the football, because we know when you take the football.
because we know when you take the football away
just raises your percentages
of winning the football games.
So every week, our goal is to win the game.
So we want to win the game
and we take the ball away.
It's the defense helping the team and win the game.
So our guy has done a great job of owning that.
Not only, again, I talked about practice earlier,
but they have to do it in practice.
And we emphasize it in practice,
and it shows up on game day.
That mentality.
That's a sore mentality.
It's so much the mental side.
of desire to play that way.
Who do you see leading and holding that standard of like this way
you play defense here and like anything below that is just unacceptable?
Who leads to swarm charge?
That would be, well, you really can't go out there if you're not about it.
And that's what's unique about our defense.
It's not one guy.
If you want to talk about one guy, you can talk about Will as the guy
as the guy who leaves you, you talk about Aziz.
As the one guy, you can talk about stingling.
I can name all those guys because each one of our guys,
when you play defense, the way I believe in playing defense,
like if you're not about the swarm mentality,
then it's going to be hard for you to play defense for me
because I see it one way.
A lot of teams are banged up this time of the year.
Kansas City, probably the healthiest they've been,
skill position-wise on offense.
How challenging is what they have weapon was from our homes?
They present a unique challenge because when you talk about their skill position,
they have five guys who are all elite playmakers.
Everybody they put on the field that's ineligible has a chance to create an explosive
and make plays.
And it's not always the explosive play down the field.
It can be worthy just on a one-yard pass in him tournament.
into an explosive.
So they present probably the biggest challenge we've had,
we faced all year.
And it takes everyone, right?
That's why I talk about our defense.
Like, it's going to be a collective effort from everybody.
It's not just stopping one guy.
It's not just stopping Kelsey.
They're running backs.
It's really good.
I don't think Piron gets them out a lot of credit,
but he's a guy who's one of the smartest guys when it comes to pass pro,
protecting, blocking.
Running routes, like he's another guy you have that you can't sleep on him as well.
So they do a really good job of, I think Patrick does a really great job just distributing the football to whoever's open.
It just reminds you of everybody makes the analogy of the point guard and in the NBA, but that's what he is.
He's truly point guard.
He's dishing the ball to whoever's open and is not only down the field is the short passes.
That guys open, he's getting the football and those guys are converting and creating explosives.
So everybody, you know, side line to side line, we have to play with great awareness, great
discipline, and we have to tackle really well.
Is there any more challenge to, like, from a defensive coordinator standpoint where you really
haven't had the visual of all these guys on the field healthy at the same time?
No challenge.
We'll do.
We'll attack what they do, and we'll see how it turns out.
All right.
Thank you.
Thank you very much, D'Amico.
If you want to chew on anything that D'Amico had to say, let us know.
Come on in and be a part of the program at 1148.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.

And at 1.50 today, it's another edition of Believe it or not.
A lot to get to.
We will celebrate again another outstanding performance by Houston Texans on Saturday as well.
And we'll do that all the way to 2 o'clock today.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Very complimentary, D'Amico, as is most of the time.
time when he has one of these
press availability.
713-212-5-790.
More Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Now on Sports Talk 790.
Throwing the inches up!
Let's have a two-piece.
Throwing up the inches, baby.
Can we play this on the...
Is this really even legal to be playing?
It's a clean version.
Are you sure?
Who since...
Let's do multiple choice.
Who sings this song?
sings. Who wraps this song?
Oh, you want to give you choices?
Yeah. Okay. DJ DMD.
Okay. Big Hawk. Fat Pat.
Paul Wall. Slim Thug.
Some Thug. Mike Jones.
Slim Thug. Okay. Good job.
Slim Thug is rapping right now. It's technically a Mike Jones song with Slim Thug and Paul Wall.
Slim Thug is on the first verse. A lot of people think it's a Slim Thug song. That is incorrect.
Either way. This is where H-Town burst onto the scene as a national.
rep conglomerate, I suppose.
By the way, Kendrick Lamar
getting lots of promos for his Super Bowl
halftime performance. Yes.
He's also up for like six,
seven Gramies coming up in the beginning of February.
By the way, I'm going to send you
what? Every tweet about Kendrick Lamar
on Super Bowl Sunday. Why? What do you mean?
Because it's going to run 50-50.
50% on countries are going to make this is amazing. 50%
is going to hate it. Yeah, I don't care. Just like every other
halftime performance. I don't need the validation.
No, but I still want to send it to you.
I know. It'll help me kill time.
Okay. Because the Super Bowl may be a blowout. You don't remember know.
Actually, we haven't had to blowout in quite some time.
We've been on a pretty good run, haven't we?
There have been, last year went to overtime, right?
It was like the first overtime.
Yeah, wasn't it, I want to say,
Blackjack in the end zone or something like that?
It was the last blowout, the Seahawks Broncos 40 to 8?
Yeah, it's been a while.
But when I was a kid, man, every year was a blowout.
Yeah.
The league, I'm not saying, you know, you could say the league was better, but back in my day or whatever, but everybody's good now.
Yeah.
More than ever, like schemes, you get, like anything that happens.
People get better and better and better as the years go along.
I don't know, like math or physics or whatever.
People learn faster.
The athletes are bigger, stronger.
The 53rd guy on every roster is closer than the 53rd guy on rosters back in the day.
And salary caps level the playing field.
Absolutely.
The hard cap, for as much as the players fight back on it in baseball and basketball,
the hard cap has made the NFL the most, it is a big, not all of it,
but it's a part of why the NFL is the most interesting league year to year with the most parity.
Yeah, by the way, television ratings down a smidge from year to year.
That's fine.
I'm okay with that.
You know what it is?
And it's not because the NFL has less interest.
I think that sometimes you get some weird sampling.
sometimes when you're the big dog and your ratings go up every, every single year and year and year and year, you get a tipping point or you slip back some.
And then it's like, I'm sure in the owner's meetings or whatever, like they got a like a group text or something with Jerry Jones.
Lots going on with these writings.
They're down.
It's okay, Jerry.
It's fine.
No, I, I, like, you're still making billions of dollars.
I want to see who the numbers are because I mean, I want to say it was just a tinge.
Oh, Buccaneers chiefs is a blowout.
As I pull it up.
That was 31 to 9, 21.
Okay.
But yeah, before that, the Panthers Broncos wasn't a blow.
They got like a fumble 60.
There had been some lousy games.
It was 43 to 8, not 40 to 8.
Yeah.
That bothers me.
I'll be fine.
You're fine.
Yeah, I must have gotten rid of the email because I was looking for it.
Oh, the ratings.
The ratings.
Again, just a tinge, but when I looked at the headline, I'm like, I don't think
anybody in the NFL circles is like, oh, man, our sport needs to be fixed.
Right.
Remember, it's also sampling, too.
We have a very, the way we measure audiences is just not consistent.
And there is plenty of room for interpretation.
I don't know.
Every time I see a game on television, I see sold out crowds, I see intense social media interaction.
And I have two games that were sold on Netflix for $150 million.
NFL is doing okay.
salary cap keeps they reset the salary cap every year keeps going up that means revenues have gone up it
it is time are we going to go with a houston song we're going to throw the ages up for our houston song at the top of the hour

And look, the weather's good this week, but later this week it's going to get cold.
We get more rain coming.
And what I want to do is I want to make sure your trees are in the best possible condition.
And that's why you call affordable tree service at 713-699-2663.
713-699-2663.
Please call Martin, have them come out and evaluate your trees and give you an estimate
on what it's going to take to make sure that your tree have the best chance of surviving
during these up and down temperatures.
if you've not had your trees deep root fed,
if you can't remember the last time you had your trees pruned,
evaluative for overall health,
now is the time to call.
He's not super busy right now,
so it's a really good opportunity to actually speak to Martin personally.
He's kind of crazy, but he's a good guy.
I love his family,
and you'll be able to speak with him
and get your trees looking their best for the upcoming spring.

Affordable Tree Service.
Launch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
The Chargers take over 1139 to go in this first half.
Out of the pocket.
Herbert dials it up across his body and that one's intercepted.
Kamari Lasseter with the pitch.
Did he play of the drive.
A minute two on the clock.
Stroud.
Laces in.
Touchdown.
Nico Collins.
Texans on the board.
Herbert.
Pump, throw.
Intercept it.
Chargers leaving quickly side on.
It's pulled inside the 15.
Extra point.
It gets popped up in the air.
Dicker knocks it away and gets clubbed on the play.
And they've got it running with it.
DeAngelo Ross for two.
Fourth and one.
It's Mixon, first down, and more.
Let's make every game.
How proud are they right now?
Picked off fourth of the day for Houston.
Is his song on my iPhone?
Yes or no?
It should be.
That wasn't the question.
Taking pride in my ride like every player should.
Come on, Matt.
Gets the people going.
By the way, just to finish up, we were talking about last hour,
the NFL is a 2.2% decrease in viewers.
Oh, my God!
By the way, this is the Rockets play this at every victory, correct?
I don't know. I'm too busy saying, Rockets win.
Will I say it tonight?
Yes, especially with our good friend John Morant, questionable, with an illness.
All right, that is going to be part of what I believe to be the news at noon.
Yes, Matt, absolutely. We're going to talk about the Houston Texans as they were able to take care of
business against the Los Angeles Chargers.
A lot of people doubting them on the national scene.
They were able to get the victory.
And while actually, normally we go to the side of the Houston Texans,
let's hear from Justin Herbert talking about the Texans pressure being an issue.
Yeah, I think they did a good job.
You know, it's on us to be able to execute and handle that.
And, you know, I think it did a poor job handling the pressure.
And, you know, I got to find the quick outs, you know, throw the ball away,
do a better job for taking the ball.
Also, Justin Herbert,
squarely putting the blame on himself.
I let the team down and you can't turn over the ball like that
and expect to win and put the team into a tough position there
with four turnovers like that.
So, you know, the defense hung tough.
They got some turnovers.
They gave us opportunities.
But I just have to be better.
I'll agree with him on one thing.
He sucked.
He didn't blame anybody else.
Accountability from Justin Herbert
and his four picks.
Also just 50 yards rushing overall for the team on 18 carries.
That's under three yards per carry for the charges.
Also, 429 yards for the Texans offense, Matt.
Now, they were going up against the number one scoring defense and a football.
They did get 32 points, although some of that did come from the pick six and, of course, the two-point runback.
But 429 yards, the second most of Texans have had,
all year long, doing it against a very good defense.
You know what? You save your best for almost last,
and that's exactly what the Texans did.
Yeah, it'd be nice to have Stefan Diggs and Tankdale going up to Kansas City,
but the Texans opening up as eight and a half point dogs.
Now most places you look, still about eight to seven and a half holding most places.
Saturday at 3.30, also known as Texan's time.
You know, somebody has to play the early game on Saturday.
Yes.
It does make sense that either going to be the Chiefs or the Lions,
so they both had the buy.
So you had to pick and choose what would be the more,
the sexier of the two matchups,
and the sexy of the two matchups is Washington, Detroit.
Yes.
And then, of course, we'll get more on the NFL rewind tomorrow, Matt.
But Bill's Ravens set for 5.30 p.m.
I mean, I'm not calling it a Super Bowl preview,
but this very well is a Super Bowl caliber matchup
with the Bills and the Ravens being, to me,
two of the best five teams in football.
5.30 Sunday, January 19th.
All right, in Baltimore.
Or is it in Buffalo?
Let's take a look at the forecast for Buffalo.
Wow, the line already flipped.
It opened with, see, I need to get an account.
It opened with Buffalo as one, one and a half point favorite.
It's already flipped to Baltimore minus one.
Sunday's high.
and Buffalo will be 24 degrees,
the low will be 14.
So my guess will be about
20 degrees around kickoff time.
Okay. Do you feel like that favors either
side as far as Buffalo or Baltimore?
Both used to cold weather.
I think it favors a team with a really good
running game, but Cook has been
really good for the bills. He was awesome
yesterday. Derek Henry is
still an animal. Yeah. Yeah.
That's a coin flipper to me.
I agree. Oh, that's
a one-point spread. It's about a coin flip.
elsewhere on the news at noon. As you mentioned, Matt, you do have the Houston Rockets tonight at the Toyota Center taking on the Memphis Grizzlies.
This game getting picked up nationally. It will be on NBA TV. Right now, the Houston Rockets minus three and a half spread-wise. Of course, some implications for the standings.
Rockets, a full game ahead of the Grizzlies in the two spot. Two in the lost column. So three in the lost column, they can get up on the Memphis Grizzlies if they're able to get the victory tonight.
Be careful. Denver is making a push.
They beat Dallas last line in the D.
I think dismissing Denver would be foolish.
I'm with you.
So to me, Denver posed to be a bigger threat for the two C in the West than what Memphis will throw in.
I think it's the thunder in Tier 1.
And then I think the Rockets are in the mix of Tier 2 with a fully healthy, when they get fully healthy,
Mavericks team, Nuggets, Grizzlies, Rockets, that's the next tier.
Gotcha.
In the NBA.
And we'll see what happens tonight.
Rockets have won.
3 in a row.
By the way, Reed Shepard is back from the G-League.
Yes.
As we expected.
Slog out. That's a coach told us that last week.
Appreciate it. All right, Matt. Well, apparently,
over the weekend, this is kind of offbeat, but also sports.
Sure. UFC Hall of Famer.
Kabib Nurgomedov was kicked off a plane
with many sources, including Barstool Sports and TMZ, reporting it was
an Alaska Airlines flight, but apparently
it was a frontier, I'm sorry,
Munteer flight, and Kabebe
is not happy.
A lady came to him with questions,
this is his statement, very rude from the beginning,
even though I speak very decent English and can
understand everything and agreed to assist,
she still insists on removing me from my seat.
What was the base for that?
Racial, national, or the other one, I'm not sure.
She called security, and I was
deem-plained from this aircraft. After one and a half
hours, I boarded another airline and left
to my destination. I did
best to say calm and respectful as you can see on the video,
but crew members could do better next time
just to be nice with clients.
As he was removed
from an air flight.
No reason for it?
No, there's just a video of him getting tossed
off the plane and he was
talking with the lady.
I don't know if they thought he was being combative
or what, but apparently
Khab doesn't want to fly
Montere anymore. By the way, he's a UFC
Hall of Famers. Got money. What's he doing flying
Monty Airways? You're going to Monterey
a budget. Yeah. You're wearing
everybody, your clothes on your entire trip
on your flight, so you don't have to pay for the bag. Yes.
You're bringing your own water.
Well, I'm trying
to find his net worth real quick. Apparently it's around
$40 million. That's on him for flying Montere.
I'm with you, Matt. And there's your news at noon.
All right, there you go. 1214 on Sports Talk
7. On it, we have the bottom of the hour we have
to tell the truth. Well, I've got four takes.
Rossi. I only believe one of the four.
this week. Okay.
Hold on. Wait.
There is four
and you only believe one. Correct. Okay.
Got it. You're right now
on that one? I'm okay. I feel like I've got to
slow it down for you.
Yeah. Thank you.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90. Quick timeout.
Come back with more of you
as we celebrate a Texans win.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Back to Matt Thomas and Ross
Via Rio on Sports Talk 790.
They were the better team today.
I'll respect to them.
And not being the better team today is,
I'm accountable for that.
So that's on me.
And congratulations to D'Amico Ryans and the Texas.
They were the better team.
I feel nice.
Appreciate you, Jim Harbaugh, set off to the offseason to count how many khakis he has in his drawer.
So he said he's accountable for the loss against the Texans.
Justin Herbert also said he's accountable for the loss as he turned the ball over four times.
And well, whoever wants to make themselves accountable, I'm okay with that because the Texans are on to the divisional round.
As we go along and move along here on the third hour, the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
at 713-212-579.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Everyone's like in the office.
Texas has got a chance to the Chiefs?
Of course they do.
They've got to play the game of their life.
I mean, but I meant to say this for it to tell the truth on it,
but I just couldn't phrase it properly.
Rossi, if they beat the Chargers,
then beat the Chiefs,
then beat either
Buffalo or Baltimore.
Even if I don't win the Super Bowl, is that the greatest
postseason run in Houston sports history?
95 Rockets.
Three super heavyweights.
Yeah, 95 Rockets was, was it, how many, was it like 360 win teams?
I wouldn't say the charges are super heavyweight.
Let me preface.
Let me change that.
I know.
But as you put on Twitter yesterday, and it was absolutely right,
Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson is going to get eviscerated this weekend.
Yeah.
No matter what happens, the team that loses, their quarterback's going to be like,
that guy is not a winner.
You can't win, which is unfair.
That was my point.
But I will say this, if you don't have good quarterback play,
like, Justin Herbert was awful.
That's the storyline to me of why the Chargers lost the Texans.
I don't think Justin Herbert throws for 315 and they still lose a football game.
You have to have good quarterback.
play. If CJ
Strang goes 9 for 20
109 yards and 2 picks, Texans have
no chance to win in that game. I mean,
their Texans defense is good, but they've got to do something
offensive. Yeah, unless they're getting a bunch of
pick 6s or something. Yeah. So I,
to me,
you have, I mean,
I feel like every single week we get the latest example
of this. Quarterbacks that are elite
are getting paid $50 million
a year for a reason.
Yes, they are.
And there is such a discrepancy between the
top quarterback and the top running back
and the top wide receiver. You can
win. What a
Nico Collins finish with on Saturday?
100 plus, 7.8
catches. I can go look at it with a touchdown.
Yeah. Seven
catches for 122 with a
touchdown. Okay, so maybe that's not a great example.
My point being
is this. Joe, what was, and Joe
makes it in a good game. So maybe you maybe
25 carries for 106 yards. Yeah.
You need all that. You need a touchdown.
But if you don't have good quarterback play, you're not
CJ Stroud, 282, one touchdown, one pick.
Like, for instance, when Buffalo and Kansas City played that championship game,
remember that Buffalo, Kansas City overtime game?
Yeah?
They were both scoring back and forth.
They both had great games.
It was like, 13 seconds to go, and the bills were like, we're finally going to make it.
You can get away with that when you have those elite quarterbacks.
If you don't have an elite quarterback who plays really, really poorly, you got no chance.
And Herbert, yeah, Herbert, to me yesterday, really took a step back in terms of the national perception of him.
I feel like this in really all sports, especially when it comes to playoffs and late in playoffs.
You can do all the game planning you want, all the preparation.
At some point, it just comes down to this guy made a freaking incredible play.
Whether it be Michael Jordan in the playoffs, Tom Brady, Eli Manning those couple of times, Pat Mahomes,
where it's like there is no amount of preparation and game planning or anything that you could have done
to where it's simply like, that dude made a play.
And there's going to come that moment in the playoffs, to me,
whoever it is going to be,
and that play will either get made or it won't.
And then those are the great moments that we remember.
Like C.J. Stride is at a certain level right now.
He wins the next two games because he's going to have two great games.
Yes.
He's going to be put into a different stratosphere if it happens.
Of course.
The Texans defense isn't good enough to withstand what if C.J.
puts up Herbert numbers in Kansas City this week.
Probably not.
I would agree with that. Okay.
Let's talk to some people.
Let's go to Philip and Pearland at 1223 on 7-90.
Philip, good afternoon.
Hey, Matt.
Hey, Ross.
I think San Diego choked.
You know, they had that wide open receiver,
I don't know, a tight end near the 10.
He dropped it, just flat out dropped it.
and then those
the interceptions, the
overthrows by Herbert,
you know,
they got really lucky there
where they became interceptions.
And then
the number three play.
How did they get really lucky?
An all-pro
first team cornerback
was hawking the ball
from Justin Herbert.
And one did go off the hands
of Will Disley.
I'll give you that one.
But how is that luck?
But two of them,
Ross.
two of them were overthrows where they could have easily caught.
He was under pressure.
Yeah, Justin Herbert, when he's getting harassed by Will Anderson and Danico Autry and
DeNeal Hunter, he's going to be under pressure.
He's going to make mistakes.
Yeah, they were mistakes, though.
I mean, the overthrow slightly to Bacocchi might have been a mistake.
But the other one, I mean, he was right in his hands early on, the tight end.
And then the interception, I still, it infuriates me.
I kind of, anyway, that they don't call that an interception when number three in the end zone.
I forget when that was.
You mean when he dropped the ball?
Oh, he dropped the ball.
What are you kidding me?
He had it in his hands being turned up.
And then he dropped the ball.
Philip, are you charged your film?
We're talking about a different play.
Oh, maybe we are.
You're talking about Derwin James dropping the ball on the number three, right?
When they took the end zone.
Yeah, on the right side?
What do you mean?
dropped it. How do you construe?
He dropped it. Explain that
to me. He didn't survive the one where they overturned it?
Yeah.
You think they shouldn't have overturned that?
No.
You must have walked out of the room, but would he drop the ball?
He fell to the ground.
No, I watched every replay, Ron.
The ball came out.
There was not a single soul in the park that saying he should have done that.
When did it come out? When he hit the ground?
What?
He hit the ground.
But it was still being clustered his hand.
You have to survive.
He didn't survive the ground.
It's like, go back to the rulebook, Philip.
It popped out after that?
Yes.
Go back and look it up.
There's not a single soul in the planet that thinks that was a bad call except you.
Yeah, it's you, my friend.
I've checked out of this conversation.
By the way, Texans first downs, 20 to 15 over the chargers.
Yards, 429 to 261 over the chargers.
This was a lucky win?
They beat them by 20 points.
Well, I think if the tight end catches in the red zone there, I think it might have changed the score in the first half.
And if you're Annhead Balls, you'd be your uncle.
I don't know.
You know, it's the first game I've seen the offense looked, you know, it was good in moments.
I love the way they mixed running with the pass in the second half, where Mixon was getting eight-yard carries.
at a pop. That was really
well coordinated by the offensive coordinator.
You know, they looked, on defense,
they look small compared to San Diego.
What? They're very athletic.
And the quarters...
Are you doing...
Philip, are you doing measurable on these people?
I didn't realize they looked small.
I don't know. Maybe it's the uniforms.
But compared to San Diego's offense,
they looked small.
Yeah.
Must be the powder blue somehow.
By the way, those uniforms are the best.
San Diego.
San Diego has the best uniforms to get their ass whooped in at NRG.
San Diego Super Chargers.
San Diego.
Chargers!
He's the first person on the planet to say that was a lucky win by the Texans.
Like what?
No. Herbert made mistakes because the pass rush was very consistent.
Yeah.
I used to have the Chargers song.
And hopefully San Diego will be able to bounce back from that next year.
Yeah.
Whatever.
There is nothing lucky induced with what the Texans did.
The Texans forced the issue.
I mean, in my name, what is it?
He's talking about that Derwin James pick that wasn't, right?
He dropped the ball.
Yeah.
And by way, Dermyn James is amazing.
Derwin James is a fantastic player.
Fantastic player.
Wasn't good enough.
He was a one-man gang for the defense, if you will.
Little Mac was pretty good.
Joey Bosa got a sack.
Yeah, but Joey looks slower.
He's got a lot of injuries.
A lot of injuries.
Back in my argument, they look slower.
All right. Steve, hang tight.
Robert, hang tight.
We'll get to both of you coming up in a matter of moment.
It's 1228. Sports Talk 7.90.
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
713-212-5-7-9 if you want to get in.
We've got to tell the truth coming up next.
But Steve and Robert will get to you as well.
So do not go anywhere.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross with the word for Big City Wings.
I know that you're looking for a place for lunch right this second.

And Connor, I do know how to tell the truth.
And I'm about to do it here on Sports Talk 790.
I have four takes.
These are takes, not facts.
These are four opinions I have.
One of them, Connor, you listen to me?
One, I believe.
Ross.
One of them, I believe.
Yeah, okay, I got it.
Time for you to decide which one I'm telling you the truth.
Okay.
Let me write this down.
Number one.
The only road team winning this weekend in the divisional playoffs in the NFL.
will be the Baltimore Ravens.
They will win at Buffalo.
Okay?
Sure.
Number two.
So Mike McCarthy is now out as a Dallas Cowboys coach.
Jerry Jones has got a fan base that continues to have a lot of issues in terms of people respecting his role.
Pass is prime.
Speaking of prime.
Okay.
being prime at Colorado ain't going to last much longer
because everybody else is going to jump in a game.
If Jerry Jones really wants to make a splash higher
and go somebody that would not necessarily follow the company line
because that's what I think people think that Jerry Jones is going to do.
He's going to get Deion Sanders.
Wow.
Because the Raiders have already told Deion Sanders thanks but no thanks.
Hmm.
Okay.
And Dion's a former Dallas Cowboy.
Number three.
It is so late in the game, boys.
How late is it?
That Alex Spregman need not worry about signing a contract
until somebody gets hurt at spring training
before signing a new deal.
Scott Boris did that with three of his clients last year.
What's one in 2025?
Well, one of them fired him.
One of them did fire him.
Yes, that's true.
But the other two did not.
Blake Snell did not.
I believe Blake Snell's a Scarborough.
this guy, right? Yeah, he did not. And then he regretted
not having a spring training because he was awful
his first couple of starts. But then he got a new contract, so he's
doing fine. Yeah. I think
it's so late in the game now with the spring training
that what's another few more
weeks? And lastly,
Mike McCarthy just got fired from the Dallas Cowboys
who decided that he was not going to come back?
He didn't take a year off.
I know their jobs galore all over the place,
but all the jobs suck.
Except New England, they just hired Mike
Rayble the other day.
Take a year off. Come back in 2026. Better jobs might be available, including teams that might have winning programs that might be looking for new coach or new coach retires.
I say if I'm Mike McCarthy, I sit out 2025, do some television, regroup, rebrand yourself, get rid of the stain that was a Dallas Cowboys.
Come back bigger and better and stronger in 2006.
Now, you say he should or he will?
I think he should. If I was giving advice to Mike McCarthy, I'd say take a year off.
here we go. Only road team that wins this weekend is Baltimore.
Jerry Jones needs to go higher Dion Sanders.
Alex Bramman should wait till spring training starts before signing a new deal of picking a team.
And Mike McCarthy should take a year off.
Which one of those four am I telling you the truth?
What are you thinking?
I don't know. I'm kind of, these last three are throwing me off.
Well, okay, sorry, one three and four kind of throwing me off.
I'm throwing out two.
He doesn't actually believe.
Cowboys and Dan Sanders.
Mike McCarthy,
Matt's advice to Mac McCarthy being to take a year off,
I don't think is accurate.
I don't think Mike McCarthy might won't get a job.
I don't think he will get a job,
but if he's offered a one, I'm sure he'll take it.
Yes.
Alex Bredman waiting until spring training.
He probably doesn't want to.
Yeah.
So that also kind of throws that one out.
Yes.
So I think it's got to be one.
I mean, everything you said, I would echo those sentiments.
One is also, I mean, the games that are set now, the home teams,
the Lions and, what's the other one, Lions and Chiefs are big favorites.
Yeah.
We don't know the last matchup, but the Eagles would be big favorites over either team that they could play.
No, they wouldn't be big favorites of the Vikings.
All right, I'm going to go with one.
We're both sticking to one.
You guys are done?
Yeah.
All right, here we go.
Mike McCarthy
He's
Coaches like to coach
They're not taking a year off
There's plenty of jobs out there
So he's gonna probably go after another one
Whether it or not you're right Connor
Is a debate but
I would not say better
Look every year bad jobs open up
Never great jobs open up
Yeah
The only example I might think of would be
Maybe if Sean McVey was to quit the Rams
Might be a better job
But his job was a good job
And Jim Harbaugh took it
Yeah but he took over for a 5 and 12 team
You're right
Okay so I would say
say Mike McCarthy needs to go back.
I think waiting for spring training would be very foolish for Bregman.
Because again, why do you want to go through six more weeks of this?
And by the way, any player that really misses spring training or misses part of it
really winds up to a slow start.
And that's one thing Alex Bregman doesn't need with his new team.
So it would be the same thing, actually.
Part for the course.
Yeah.
Or we get into an even slower start.
That's what I'm saying.
You need, if you're wearing a new uniform, you've got to make sure you're off to a rainbow.
It's just a good start.
The last thing you want to do is be behind everybody else in spring training.
So I would say him winning would be foolish.
And Dionne Sanders ain't playing for the Dallas Cowboys.
Coaching.
A player coach?
No.
So boys, you were right.
The only road team I think it's going to win this week is the Baltimore Ravens winning in Buffalo.
And you both figured out which one I was telling you the truth.
Nice job.
That's a spoiler.
As of right now, I will be picking the Ravens as well.
Lamar kind of needs it for his own.
Now, he's got plenty of money, but for mental health sake,
to have to face the, is Lamar Jackson a winner?
And frankly, Josh Anil, he's the same thing.
Last two years, he's beaten the Lamar Jackson as injury-prone allegations.
He's been fairly healthy, although anything can happen.
It's the NFL.
Right.
Yeah, beating the Lamar can't win in the playoffs allegations are his next step.
Well, it's like if you're on ESPN, if you're hosting Rershrake, you get it in.
this quarterback, and you just insert Lamar Jackson or Josh John, can't win the big game.
It's already locked and loaded.
The first four segments for next Monday, already locked in.
Unless they each score a touchdown on each of their possessions and it goes to overtime and like the first team to get the ball.
It's going to be one of them fell short.
Yeah.
God forbid one of them throws a pick or fumbles.
It's the playoffs.
It's going to be tough.
Both of them are great franchise quarterbacks.
We'll see what happens this weekend to me.
like I said, not a Super Bowl preview
but Super Bowl caliber matchup.
For sure. All right, that's tell the truth.
Let's talk to Robert and Katie at 1240
in the Matt Thomas show with Ross. Robert, good
afternoon.
Hey, how's it going?
Well, I guess you don't think the Texans are going to win.
No, and I'm
very, very impressed with what they did
Saturday. I mean,
the most impressed I've been with them in a long period of time,
really since last year's Cleveland game
where they destroyed Joe Flacco, but
Kansas City, you're going up in weight class and talent.
And I just, I mean,
Kansas City's defense has probably been as good as it's been in a long time,
probably even better than last year's defense.
The offense has slipped a little bit.
Could Kansas City be in a lull?
But Andy Reid doesn't typically let his team's going to know a low for a long period of time.
And even when they're not at their best, they lose two games this year.
One of them was because all the backups were in.
It'll be 24 days since they played.
Rusty?
Yeah.
And maybe they might take Texans.
for granted.
No, hold on, hold on.
Do you really think, Robert,
the tech that any team would take
that anybody for granted
at this level in the NFL?
Yeah, I still
think we can do it.
I think if any team
we were going to play,
this is the team I wanted to see us play.
If we had a chance,
we have a chance to get into
the next following week,
I think this is the road
we needed to take.
I don't know how y'all feel about that,
but that's my opinion.
Yeah, I think.
I buy that.
I mean, it's crazy to say that.
Yes.
The back-to-back Super Bowl champion and number one-seed Kansas City Chiefs were the ideal opponent for the Texans.
There were no ideal opponents.
All three were so much in terms of star power.
I'm not disagreeing, but when you say it out loud, you're like, oh.
No, no.
Robert, I will agree with you that they feel the most vulnerable.
But they're also chasing history.
Yeah.
The back-to-back Super Bowl champ number one seed chiefs.
Back-to-back.
To back.
going for it.
They try to be the first ones ever in the Super Bowl era.
I don't know if anybody in NFL championships.
If they do it, how close does Andy Reid get to Bill Belichick?
Ooh, how close does Pat Mahomes get to Brady?
TB.
Is he even 30?
What's he, 29, 30?
Mm.
These are great debate points.
Let's talk to...
He's 29.
Steve and Huffman at 1242.
Hi, Steve.
Well, hi, Matt. How are you?
I like the takes. But let me throw this at you.
Let's just say we replicate the same numbers against the Chiefs we did against Los Angeles,
minus the turnovers in all areas.
I think if we could do that somehow, we'd win the game.
Now, the main reason I called you is I saw something,
Saturday that I hadn't seen.
And that is somebody, I don't know what, Stroud, finally got it in his head.
I think I got to run the ball and be part of the offense with my legs.
When he started doing that, things opened up.
He's going to have to do that.
The other thing is, he needs to reintroduce himself to Hutchinson.
Every time I've seen that guy get a pass thrown his way, he's done nothing but
please.
So they're going to be all over Collins
and try to take him away.
They've got to go to other areas.
Hutchinson, you know,
would be definitely
money in the bank as far as I'm concerned.
And not just because he just
would have to be on the end of a 34-year
busted play.
I'm talking about the season.
Body of work.
So I think that's my
take on things.
Yeah, I know the chiefs are
are the gods of all football right now.
But, you know, my dad once told me on any given day,
one team can beat another one.
And, well, you know, Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame,
and that's the only team that beat them so far.
All right, thank you, Steve.
All right.
I mean, there's a, you know, we've figured out what the folks in Las Vegas happen to think.
They think there was about a 20% chance of Texans win,
meaning that if you played 10 times, it'd beat him twice.
Okay, so
Could be Saturday 3.30.
All you need is one, baby.
Or it could be in six years at 3.30.
Well, unfortunately, they only play once.
But Xavier Hutchinson, just a guy.
There is nobody in that receiving core
that's anything more than just a guy except for Nico Collins.
Frankly, John Metchy, please hold on to the ball.
John Metschie, to me, probably is playing his last season for the Texas.
Unfortunate.
Great story.
I mean, frankly, it's gotten better as the season has gone on.
along. The second best
pass catcher is Dalton Schultz.
Hey man, don't sleep on Cade Stover like that.
I mean, he's fine. I mean, they do use a tie-in
caught a bit. I mean, that's case in point where those
you get two guys. Yeah. What did Dalton Shultz end up
with? I thought he, oh, only two catches? Why did I think it was more?
How many targets? Stowe or four for 28?
Dalton Shult had four targets.
Yeah, so. Eight for Metchie.
Eight for Nico Collins, who caught seven. He's just
dynamic. Yeah, you're going to have to get
Nico Collins the ball.
Isn't incredible that Nico is the best receiver on the team,
best pass catcher among any of them, by far.
The drop off to the second is significant,
and yet it doesn't matter.
He still gets 100 yards.
That's what it all pro-dust.
You know, by the way, I thought Bobby Slovak did a great job.
Bobby Slovak ain't going anywhere, so you can all can stop that.
Well, he might go to the Jets.
Okay, he's not being fired.
How about that?
You know what?
Get the card out.
Uh-oh.
Put my name on it.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, I'm with you.
Yeah, thank you.
For once.
You should be there with me for more than once.

When I listen to the Matt Thomas show, I don't even understand.
The eclectic nature of the show, the dichotomy, the ostentatiousness, the perfunctory that sounds about as smart as LeVar Ball.
Back to the Matt Thomas Show, whoever he is.
That's the complimentary football that, you know, we've been looking for and we've been needing as a team.
And it's just an outstanding performance on all three phases.
Really proud of all of our guys, I can go through each position group.
Everybody stepped up and made a play we need to make play.
our best player stepped up.
So if we were to do a video of staying alive with the Texans,
is C.J. Stride, acting as a role as Barry Gibb,
and his brothers, Gibbs.
Who do you have on the left?
I don't know.
He's the leader?
I don't even know.
Will Anderson on his left.
Which one's the leader?
Barry?
Yeah.
Okay, is C.J. Stroud.
Yeah.
Even though, I mean, it was a team effort.
C.J. Stroud did very well.
Will Anderson on his left shoulder, on his right shoulder,
you'd have Nico Collins?
Sure.
Where's Aziz Al-Shayr?
Where's Foley Fadikasi?
I don't think they made the video.
Background dancers?
Yeah.
Okay.
Part of the rhythm section.
That's fine.
Who's slapping the bass?
1253 on Sports Talk 7.9.
This is the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
How much more we're going to...
Tomorrow's still a celebratory day, right?
Yeah, I think so.
And then it's on to Wednesday where it's like...
Then we're on to Kansas City.
He's still the coach in North Carolina today, huh?
For now.
Okay.
It's not going to change.
By the way, I think I went, I got every game right except one.
I got the Texans game wrong on Saturday.
I think I got Washington covering.
I had Buffalo covering.
No, you had the Broncos covering, I think.
No chance.
You know, no, no, no.
There was no, no, no, no.
Uh-uh.
I definitely had the Broncos covering.
covering. I said late, no, I said late score
for the Ravens, I think. No, I think I had
Buffalo giving the points up. I think I had
Washington. Maybe pull the tape.
You go ahead. You know what? I, you know, really I don't want,
I rarely I don't want you to pull the tape. I want you to pull the tape.
Pull it. You might have had Buffalo.
Yeah. What about Baltimore?
I don't, Baltimore.
I was actually supposed to write these down and I did.
Wait, I thought we were writing them down. I know. You told me
to write them down and I brought up the prediction
thing, but I forgot to write
them down.
I'm sorry, unless I wrote them somewhere.
I mean, thank God you're not a bookkeeper or an accountant for a company.
Mine, goodness.
I would be the worst accountant in accounting history.
The worst part was, is I thought you were typing that in.
I was reading the old, this one, and I was making a new tab, and I must have got distracted.
I forgot.
Your assignment is to listen to the old show from Friday's show.
Okay.
I think we did it late.
Well, I still have it here that you had the bingles and Niners in the
Super Bowl. Oh, you can race that part.
I'm leaving it.
It'd have been a good Super Bowl, too. Preseason predictions are hard.
I had Chiefs Niners.
Yeah. The Lions, we should have been on the Lions a lot sooner than we were.
No, I'm still, I'm sticking with Eagles. I think the Lions' lack of defense will come to bite them at some point.
Okay. Short turnaround this week for the winner of tonight's game.
You know, it's unfair, and it's terrible, and they did it for money.
Yes. Yes. Yes.
especially yes.
It almost feels like if you play this game tonight,
you should be the automatic late game on Sunday.
Yeah, get you a few extra hours,
but it's going to be they've already got them at 2.30.
Whoever wins tonight, Vikings or Rams.
And again, it comes down to National Appeal.
Mm-hmm.
Well, I think at least they have to do it in favor of putting them on Sunday.
Oh, no, there's no way they could put them on Saturday.
That would be terrible.
You would have to basically have to call in the NFL and say,
This is not going to...
You have to get government involved.
We don't want to do that.
Lord knows I don't want to do that.
We've not brought up the Rockets much today.
No.
They do play Memphis tonight.
We'll have it for you here on 790.
The launch pad is hosted by whom at 6 o'clock.
I believe it would be one...
Dan Matthews.
Dan Matthews will have.
Coming up at 6 o'clock.
And then we got 630 for the network.
Pre-game 7 o'clock, tip time from inside the Toyota Center.
The rockets are holding onto the second spot in the Western Conference.
Adam Clinton, who will be leaving early, so I'll be feeling.
filling in five to six on the 18.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Which means you're going to be on TV for an hour?
Yeah, I got to go, should I go, I got to go wet my hair.
I'm in a Texan's hoodie and like my hair is quite disheveled.
I'll go, I'll go clean up.
You know what?
Hey, if anybody from Space City is listening, you can go ahead and turn the TV off.
Hey.
I mean, use the audio, but just use like graphics for the entire hour.
That's rude.
How about putting a couple of pictures of Adam and I'm just sitting there looking at each other?
Yeah, we can do this.
that. I'll go fix my hair.
You're going to have to.
It's terrible. It looks terrible.
Oh, shut up.
You know what? You'd be the low-hanging fruit would be,
well, at least I've got it. Well, you know me.
See, I didn't do that, did I? I've never worried about it, though.
See, I didn't do that. I look fantastic.
Okay, no, you don't. But at least I don't make,
I always tell people I have 2,000 things to make fun of mad about it.
That don't involve something that's out of control, the fact that you don't have hair.
Yeah, and you know me, it doesn't hurt me.
Yeah. Well, I don't even do it.
Ball guys shouldn't worry about it.
It's a stay away from me.
Well, we have deficiencies in some areas.
We've got some...
Dozens of things.
Doesn't even dozens of faults to point out, apart from your baldness.
I know.
I am not, you know, they call them, yeah, easy to make fun of.
That's fine.
All right.
Steve and our buddy in Los Angeles is going to visit with us start the 1 o'clock hour of the show.
Ross, what is today's edition of, believe it or not, at 150?
Hell if I know.
All right, it's the old hell if I know category.
And do we have prizes to play for them, believe it or not today?
We got tickets to the
Autobotov show in Houston
Autobotive or automotive?
Auto and boat show.
So they called the Auto Boathe?
I heard you write the first time.
Okay, I was like, I don't think you mispronounced it,
but not autobotive show.
Okay, very good.
Those are nice things.
That's just good to hang out and just watch,
look around and do some people watching
and look at some boats.
We'll have it for you coming up in an hour from now.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-7-90.
Launch timers.
This is the Matt Thomas show.
104 on Sports Talk 790.
It is the final hour of the Matt Thomas show with Ross.
Mike McCarthy will not return his Cowboys head coach.
We'll pursue other opportunities.
I think he's going to wind up getting a job, right?
But Chicago is still open.
Jacksonville is still open.
The Jetropolitans are still open, right?
The only job that's been filled is New England with Mike Vrable.
Yes.
I'm trying to think about any of their jobs that are open at this point.
I, nothing coming to mind immediately.
Did you mention Las Vegas?
Oh, Las Vegas is open, yeah.
How about Las Vegas?
We're on the streets with like Thursday or Friday that Dion Sanders would be interested in the Raiders job.
And then late Friday, the Raiders put the word, we're not interested in Dion Sanders.
Thanks, but no thanks, Dion.
Where is Deion in three years?
Give me some options, and can I choose from one?
Okay, still at Colorado?
Okay.
Coaching in the NFL?
Okay.
Or out of coaching completely?
How about coaching in a different school?
Coaching, okay, yeah, that'll be option C.
Coaching at a different school, option D, out of coaching.
Coaching in a different college.
And here's the thing.
In the NFL, you don't have to worry about NIL.
You don't talk about kids going to school.
But these kids,
Today's 23-year-olds, 24-year-olds,
would check out of Dion's
My Way, the Highway,
attitude so quick in the NFL.
How many more children does he have
matriculating through college football?
I think it's one more, right?
I don't see it.
I'm just like, I'm not trying to be funny.
I don't know.
No, you're trying to figure out where, yeah.
How long he would...
Would he be a packaged deal with something?
That's interesting.
Because think about this,
if all his kids are high first-round draft picks
and you would presume they're probably a very bad football team,
that he would want to go somewhere
where they would be looking for a head coach
and a franchise changing type player.
Well, guess what?
You're two for the price of one.
Shiloh Siddore and there is Shalomi.
Shilohedor and Shalomi.
Sounds like in a bad law firm.
That might be good.
Thank you for calling Shalim Shalomi Samami Samami.
Hmm.
Oh, wait.
Shalomi is a woman or a female.
Well, then probably she won't be as a very high of draft tickets that or two.
I don't know.
What kind of 40 she runs or
Okay, so you know what?
I'm going to say out of coaching in three years.
Doing what?
Television?
I mean, he doesn't have to do anything.
But yeah, I would say out of major college coaching.
Maybe he could be an assistant.
Because he's tired of the NFL.
Rule following or what?
I think it all, I think it would all wear thin, the act especially.
I mean, he's doing it for his sons.
That makes sense.
How old's prime?
He's got to be 60, right?
somewhere around
God, if he's 60 years old
It looks great by the way
I want you to notice
how old you are
if I tell you
57
Okay 57
I already look older than him
Yeah
He's got the solid gray in the beard
You got you get the salt and pepper going
Thank you
Although a few more weeks of this show
You may be in the
I'm telling you man
I know it's tough
When I started in this show
No gray
You were all wrinkles
All black
So optimistic about this business.
You were thinner.
Much thinner.
Now you're 15 years with Matt Thomas.
It wears on you, folks.
Salt and pepper.
Yeah.
Gain a few extra pounds.
You could see it all.
Five o'clock on the 18.
Again, I don't know.
I would go home and put a suit on.
I'm not putting a suit on.
Put at least a sports coat on.
I'm going to at least, I'll put some oil in my hair.
Get it looking nice and shiny.
Really?
Yeah, you know, a little Moroccan or sleek oil?
I wouldn't got a shave yesterday at a barbershop in the Willerbrook area.
they put a little Sean on my head.
That's good.
Yeah.
She goes, you want some Sean?
I said, daily, 10 to 2, let's go.
And she's like, what does that mean?
I said, don't worry about that.
Yeah.
Like kicked you out.
I gave her a good tip, though.
She's happy.
713-212.5 is 790.
Stevens in Los Angeles at 108 on 790.
Stephen, good morning.
Good afternoon to you.
Actually, it's good morning to you still.
11 o'clock out there.
Listen, sir.
How is everybody doing today?
Excellent.
Thank you.
I've just got a couple of points that I want to get your take on.
The first one being, do you think that the win on Saturday validates the season?
You know, I mean, the same record is last year, but you played a first place schedule.
And for the second year in a row, you walloped a team that was favored in your building.
So I just want to get your take on that before I get to the next question.
The validation for this year to me was what I brought it was thinking in August.
Get to the AFC championship game.
because if you lose this week, you're exactly what you were a year ago,
you're exactly what you were seven or eight years ago when you were winning those AFC South championships.
The only true validation in my book, regardless of schedule,
is how far do you take this team come postseason-wise?
And they've never gone to an AFC championship game in their entire existence of a franchise,
which is now, what, 23 years?
That's how you validate a season.
It's getting further in the playoffs than you've ever had before.
So I think just playing a first-place schedule,
remember you still, Stephen, still played just the AFC South.
And they were just as awful as always.
So you want to validate it.
You want to be better than you were in years past.
Go do something you've never done before,
and that's advanced with championship game.
That's at least how has I see it.
Yeah, that's fair.
I mean, and it just kind of brings me to my next point,
which is what gives me hope, you know,
and I put that in quotes
because I know it's a very tough task
to beat the chief at Arrowhead
is that we saw
CJ the playmaker
on Saturday, which we hadn't
seen for most of the season.
I mean, it just felt
like if not most of the season, the second
half really felt like his
baseball, I'm sorry, his football
judgment was clouded.
And then what happened on that
busted play where he ended up making
a play, which is what you want your playmakers
to do was that it just looked like his football instincts kicked in. And we saw him making accurate
throws. We saw him, you know, going through his progressions. And when they weren't there, he was
running for first downs. It just looked like the player that we all saw last year. And if we can get
that CJ to play this Saturday versus the Chief, I gave us a chance as long as it's a pair
fight and the rest are doing what the rest usually do. So I appreciate the call, guys. I'll hang up a
Thanks, Stephen, for the phone club.
Appreciate it.
Good friend of the show, Brian Lima,
a co-host of the Sean Salisbury show.
Yes.
Put a photo up on his Twitter account over the weekend.
Uh-huh.
That showed a referee with Kansas Chief colors
and a logo on the hat.
Yes.
Is that real?
Don't even ask that question.
Point being is this.
Do we have a hypersensitive group of Texans fans
that think the Chiefs are going to get every call?
I think it's America thinks that.
the Chiefs get a call and they do.
Superstar calls are a thing.
Yeah, I mean, Michael Jordan got it.
Yeah.
John Moran gets it.
James Hardin got it.
James Harlan got it.
LeBron James.
LeBron James.
Greg Maddox got it.
Kevin Durant, Luca Dunch.
Gets calls and still complains every time every trip down the floor.
I think when you're at a super elite level as part of the, like if you're a super elite, here's what you get.
Big contract.
Appearances on Saturday Night Live.
You get to do commercials for Rubway.
and you get calls.
Rubway?
That's your favorite place in Memphis, correct?
No, it's not.
I've been to a rubway in Memphis.
Okay.
I've been to a Remy Rons, but never a Rubway.
Okay.
You see what I'm saying, though?
No.
You get all those things.
All the benefits.
Absolutely.
Tom Brady didn't get calls?
Tom Brady got calls.
Peyton Manning?
Oh, yeah.
You sneeze on Tom Brady.
It's 15 yards.
Fred Far have got.
got calls.
Yeah.
All the grades do.
You got to protect the product that puts the brand in the $15 billion club.
And honestly, no disrespect to, what's the backup quarterback in Kansas City?
What's his name?
I'm drawn on blank.
Oh, Carson Wentz?
Carson Wentz.
America don't want to see no Carson Wentz playing for the Chiefs.
They want to see Pat Mahomes.
Mm-hmm.
Guess what?
If Travis Kelsey gets hurt on a dirty play or a question.
questionable play and ends a drive.
America does not want to see Taylor Swift cry.
She'll be all right.
And then she'll go write on a song about it.
Is she back on her tour?
She's got it.
No, the tour is done.
She'll be there.
Oh, okay.
Cool.
Great for her.
Maybe being bummer-right with her to Kansas City.
You know, she ain't getting driving there.
No.
She's taking her private jumbo jet.
She probably has at least five.
I think she's got five jets, my wife says.
Keep the carbon emissions up.
Let's go, baby.
What does one person need five jets for?
Ask Taylor Swift.
I really should get a free run
and all the money I've spent on those concerts
for her the last couple of years.
At least one seat? At least one ride.
Yeah, one ride.
Okay.
Get on the Swifty plane one and go.
That'd be great.
All right.
114. Sports Talk 790.
It is the Matt Thomas Showed Ross.
Hey, listen, we got the celebratory times coming ahead.
Yes.
Where do you put?
This one to me of Saturday was
way more impressive than the Cleveland game last year.
Because it was Joe Flacco.
I mean, Joe Flacco caught lighting in a bottle
for one game against the Texans come regular season.
But the Texans made Joe Flacco look very old
about four weeks later.
Yeah, it feels a lot better making Justin Herbert look pedestrian
than 40-year-old Joe Flacco.
That's how I see it.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-2-1-790.
Yes, making Justin Herbert look pedestrian was great.
Texans also making look J-K.
Dobbins look pedestrian. Lots of great football over the weekend. As I mentioned on Friday,
my draft Kings pick six players this past weekend. I had JK Dobbins lower than the 61.5 yards.
Nine carries for 26 rushing yard. That's a win. I also had Russell Wilson more than
207.5 passing yards. He had 270 passing yards. That's a win as well. So if you took my advice,
You went two for two.
I am just saying for these weekends games, I think it is something about the Chiefs running game.
I might go to that well again.
Maybe the commanders in the passing game.
We'll fine tune that.
We'll have my spotlight picks coming up on Friday.

Matt Thomas, Ross via Real.
It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk 790.
I just have an opportunity to play another, you know, wild card game here in Houston and to get a win.
You know, our crowd was rocking.
Just an honor and a privilege to be able to be, you know, in these shoes.
And I don't take it for granted.
And I'm just so grateful.
SCJ on what it was like hanging out with y'all, 3.30 on Saturday.
Crowd looked full at kickoff, which was good.
Loud and proud, baby.
Everybody putting their Hs up?
Put your H's up, win or lose.
Mm-hmm.
As you do, Matt.
What were you thinking eight minutes in the first quarter?
When they were down six-nothing?
Yeah.
You could have two thoughts.
One, we're in for a long day, or two,
they're lucky that they're only down six-nothing
and that one score could really change the vibe of the entire game.
I think my thought was the defense was playing well,
and I thought that I was like,
if the offense doesn't get in gear,
than this is going to be a long day for the Texas.
Yep. But then the offense did get in gear.
I mean, certain hosts on the station wanted to leave the stadium.
Yeah, what was he tagging me for that? I never lead games.
I think it was should Team X give up type of slant on that.
Then you just flat out steal the bit then.
Talking about Adam Clanton, of course, coming up two to six here on Sports Talk 7.90.
You know what a listen?
Wonderful video.
Ah, give some.
I'll be on at five.
listening when I'm on the show. That's true.
Well, others don't know. Well, TBD.
Yeah. Okay, so
what we're going with this? So I
a lot of me thought,
my God, they are getting a ninth
live on this. They better fix
their issues or it's going to be 24
to nothing at the half and people are going to be
putting the boo-birds out. Yeah, the
first few drives were, I mean,
you fumbled the ball away on
the first play?
I will tell you, in that moment, I was like,
oh, my God, this is about to be a long Saturday.
My faith didn't go super hot.
Once they took the lead, that's when I think I started to believe in the second quarter.
I was like, they can beat this team.
Because the defense for the charges on the field of the long period of time.
There was a 99-yard drive.
I mean, that switch flipping with C.J. Shroud and the play that he made.
And Herbert wasn't getting any better.
He was still overthrowing receivers.
They were still throwing passes that were intercepted.
They were shutting down the run game.
There was no running game to speak of.
Did Ezekiel Elliott even got in the field on Saturday?
No, I don't think he was active.
Active, yeah.
That was just, I guess, what the ultimate insurance policy.
Yeah.
The charges looked really pedestrian,
and Justin Herbert is no longer going to be discussed
in a conversation of elite quarterbacks.
I mean, he had a sluggish start to open up the year
because he was hurt, got better,
people were bragging about the few interceptions he threw.
He threw more interceptions than that walled card game
then he threw during the entire regular season.
Yeah.
And didn't get any help from his receivers,
but it was, I think,
if you really looked at it with a microscope,
you probably said to yourself,
these passes just weren't very good.
They really started to open things up
as the season went along as far as throwing the ball.
They were definitely run, run, run, run,
and then run some more to start.
And then he started playing very well towards the end of the season.
Yeah.
Did Justin Herbert.
Remember we talked about that stat, though,
that Texans had a minus six.
point differential against playoff games,
playoff teams.
The second worst team in the NFL was the Chargers.
They had like a minus 30-something.
Which is crazy because they have the best scoring defense going into the
game.
See, that's why you've got to contextualize things too.
How hard was their schedule?
How many good top offenses they go against?
How many playoff teams did they play?
Well, they played one on Saturday and they got once!
Yeah.
And usually the Chargers fans are the first to say,
well, we got, we have bad karma
or something flukish happened.
There is some bad juju
in that franchise.
There is terrible.
Look, one of your best friends
has got that,
I hear about it all the time.
There was no bad new juju.
Justin Herbert played very poorly.
Yeah.
Well, the Texas defense played very well.
They played extraordinarily well.
And you know what?
Both things can be said and be accurate.
Doesn't be one or the other.
Now, you're going from 70 degrees
in a warm building with lots of your friends
to 25 degrees.
25 degrees and 73,000 people that want you to lose.
Yeah, it's going to be different.
And the defense always seems to do a lot better at home, at least recently.
Why do you think that is?
I don't know.
It's just, is it just the karma of being a home game versus a road game?
You could go with the crowd noise.
I don't know.
I think I don't know.
So I'm trying to think in the last couple of years.
Ravens didn't have problems at home.
No, no, no.
And that's the thing about the Texans defense.
It's been a little bit up and down.
I mean, Ross, it was 31 to 2 on Christmas Day.
That was, what, 12, 17, 18 days ago?
Are you telling me that Texans all of a sudden played the Tennessee Titans
in which their starters play a series or two, and that fix all the issues?
No.
It just shows you that you wake up one day and you may be a completely different team the next.
Yeah, and that's exactly what the Texans did.
If the Texans and Chargers played 10 times,
right.
My guess is they split the series.
Or somewhere thereabouts, perhaps.
If they're all 10 in Houston,
then I think I would favor the Texans.
For sure.
Hell, for that matter,
I don't think anybody going to L.A. to play a game
at the Chargers stadium is all of a sudden going,
ooh, the Charger fans may be a big issue.
That's the thing.
I mean, if the Texans and Ravens play 10 times,
31 to 2 is probably about as bad as it gets.
Yeah.
But also, I mean,
Do you have more time?
If the offensive line have more time to gel, play together more?
You did have, I think, the starting three linebackers for the Texans, it was their first time all three starting together.
I mean, you were as healthy as you possibly could be.
You come out of the game relatively healthy, right?
I don't think there's anybody that was a serious injury.
If you're coming to mind, we'll see what practice reports as the week goes along.
I mean, you can't go to Kansas City feeling any better than you are right now.
but the question
it was brought up to our
from our friend
Stephen in Los Angeles
earlier this hour
what makes
I mean I answered it my way
I said you have to do something
you've never done before
for it to be a really really successful season
validate the season
validate you tell me
are you
my expectations preseason
was the AFC championship game
but as we go along
I think you can
recalibrate
like I'm recalibrating my rocket's
expectations they've gone up
my Texas expectations have gone down
if you say
aFC championship or bust
that's a pretty tough
You're one of the final four teams out of 32.
You're the best two in the AFC.
That's a tough challenge, tough ask.
But I think for an organization that doesn't know what it's like to even get there,
you want to say what validates a season.
Validating us, losing at 3.30 on Saturday is just like what they've done for many, many, many years.
It's typical.
When you validate something, it's something that's atypical, something that you don't normally see.
And that's why I think a lot of folks, at least as my perspective, is you really want to say this season was significantly different, even with all the different changes in the offense and picking up some key defensive players and, you know, drafting a corner in last year that's been ahead, a really good season is do something you haven't normally done before.
I would say 10 to 7 and into the divisional round, especially to where they were mid-season, especially where they were to, we were after the Ravens game.
I think the season is a success right now.
As long as they don't, you know, get 31 to 2 by the Chiefs,
which I don't think they will.
So if they lose 2117, you will still say, you know what it is?
I give them a B grade for the season.
Yeah.
B minus?
And you know what?
Bs get degrees, just like C's get degrees.
But you know what you want to do, don't you?
You want to make A's.
You want to go to the honor roll.
Yeah.
You want to be the National Honor Society.
You want to get that specific smoking jacket.
Being the cool kids club.
You want to be cum laude?
What positions you play?
I believe he's a punter.
Cum laude?
Yeah.
He's good.
How many inside 20?
We're done.
713, 212.570.
It was a stretch to begin with.
My fault. Totally mine.
I wasn't going to blame anyone else.
No, I would have blamed me for sure.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-2-5-7-90.
You know, we've not had one Texas person call today.
About that horace.
Oh, you mean Longhorns?
Yeah.
Where's Longhorn, Doug?
We don't have to talk about it.
I think we should.
Can I get one person to please chastise the Longhorns?
For that boneheaded play call in the Red Zone.
And are we ready?
I got a terrible, hot takey conspiracy theory about your Longhorns.
I can't wait.
It's up next on 790.
It's up next after I talk about.
The fact that we are on January 13th.
All right, let's be honest.

This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk 790.
Yeah, when you have the big play at C.
The DJ made, it does, you know, lift everyone.
I think just the energy, the morale of the entire team,
even though it's not going great.
You see that one play, it sparked the energy, spark the enthusiasm for our entire team.
And it was the difference maker for us, and our guys fed off of it.
So, yes, the play was drawn up perfectly.
Bots to center exchange.
Ball's going to take one bounce, land properly into CJ's hands.
He's going to heave it and complete it for 45 yards or whatever it was.
It's like Xavier Hutcherson.
In the course of an NFL game, Matt,
sometimes you will have to go off schedule and improvise
and come up big in those moments.
And C.J. Stroud did for the Houston, Texas.
He's Mr. Big Game improviser.
Well, he's now two and one as a playoff starter.
Yeah.
And the Texans feel like they're about tripling up
the number of wins over the Cowboys in the postseason over the last 10 years or
So, but still have it won.
You can't really bring that card when you haven't made an AFC championship.
No, you can't.
That's why it's kind of lame.
That's why you really, you got so much material over Dallas.
You just can't bring that one to the table.
It's lame and hollow.
It was fun in like 2012 or whatever.
Right, right.
You're like, yeah, take that.
But now it's been, it's been 23 years of the franchise.
You have not made a championship game.
Stop bringing the playoff success.
Yep.
All right.
My tease.
This feels very hot-taking.
I don't even know if I even believe it.
Oh, you don't even believe your own takes?
I don't even believe your own takes?
I don't know if this, the other station?
Sorry, go ahead.
Is there a part of you that believes that Sark is not trusting of Arch?
Yes.
I would totally agree with that.
As I tweeted at Sports RV over the weekend.
That's okay.
It must have just seeped through your brain because you're all.
on a similar page to where I am.
Everyone met.
I would imagine you agree.
Quinn U.S. is good and not great.
He is the complete definition of good not great.
Like good not great gets you a third round draft grade.
This whole thought of him being maybe an early round two,
it feels almost comical to me for a draft that's not even good with quarterbacks to begin with.
You see he's good not great.
I see he's good not great.
The entire country draft.
people, everyone sees he's good and not great.
Is he that much
better than Arch Manning? So that
begs the question. Is Sark
being loyal to Quinn Ewers because
Quinn Ewers came back to the program and really
helped found this new era of Texas Longhorns
football to where they're, okay, not
achieving championship success, but in the
final four of the playoff two straight years
and saying this is my guy, I'm
sticking with my guy, is this a lot of
coaches go with upper class loyalty?
If it's close between a redshirt freshman
and a junior? But
Ross, you're at the University of Texas.
Your expectations are to play for a national championship.
When you go to a school like that and when you coach at a school like that,
you cannot have any sort of favoritism.
This is not U.L. Monroe.
Yeah.
So that's what I'm asking.
Is it either of those things or is it that Arch isn't ready?
And it's got to be something.
It's something, right?
Because he won't play him.
Is it because he's almost fumbled the ball before?
and he has fumbled before, and he wants him to take care of the ball better,
and he doesn't trust him to do that.
There is either a lacking of trust or a blind loyalty to Quinn yours,
or some sort of belief in Quinn that he's greater than he is.
How about this one is a scenario, which I think if it's even a little valid as weak,
is if I put him in there, I don't want to argue week after week about whom I'm starting quarterback is.
That you can't think that way.
You've got to put the best 11 out there regardless of position.
Then why did he do it in the first Georgia game?
It's like if
And then he said, okay, Quinn's my guy.
Like I wish we had a mole in the Texas practice.
Maybe Arch just isn't all that in a bag of Chi-ups.
There's a lot of people that talked about his five-star status
and possibly being overrated because he came from a small school.
Now it's the same school that the demanding boys came from in Odell Beckham Jr., others, whatever.
Right.
Do private school boys get unfairly rated because of the best?
big numbers they put up. It is, it does beg the question. How much does Steve Sarkeesian believe
in Arch Manning? If he really believes him and thinks he's great, then he would have put him in,
it feels like. I'm just, and I'm not just talking about just the game against Ohio say it,
although again, he really should have been in the running play. But there have been times where
Ewers looks battered and bruised. Looks like he could use the series off to get his mojo back. And it
was never even considered. And especially against,
Georgia in the SEC championship game where they struggle against running
quarterbacks somebody with the mobility of Arch Manning would be nice to have.
Yeah. So I just, I didn't want to come across as, you don't know,
but that's just a very, very, from a distance viewpoint of maybe we've sold Arch a little hard.
Or maybe, maybe not the Texas folks haven't, but maybe America has.
Those that are the, oh, this Arch Manning, you know, it was going to be the great decision.
was he going to go play where his
uncle played or he's going to
go play where his other uncle played or he's going to
go play where his grandfather
I haven't seen enough
and I almost made it a gut
to tell the truth about
maybe we shouldn't be thinking about
Arch Manning leading Texas to
back to where they are in the next couple
of years but Texas still
is just so flush with talent your defense
Rossi was spectacular
championship level the offense wasn't
and kept your squad to where it is
So I couldn't do that with a straight face
and thinking that maybe Texas would take a slight step back.
Those are going to be right there the Mexican next year.
Nine touchdowns, two picks for Arch this year.
But again, who's that against?
Four of them were against UTSA,
one against Colorado State,
and two against ULM.
So the resume isn't really deep in exciting.
And two against Mississippi State.
Well, again, bottom it, open enrollment kind of thing, yeah.
So I was just like, I thought that, I was thinking that.
I was like, I want to save this for the show because I was afraid Ross is going to destroy me,
but you didn't destroy me.
So I feel a little more validated.
Yeah, I mean, it's on this, it just begs the question.
What is it about, is it that much belief in Quinn or Arch isn't ready?
It's got to be one or the other.
Because honestly, I think about this.
And this is, this should never go cross through a coach's mind, but we're in the new world of financing.
Arch is making a lot of money with NIL.
if you want any rate of return on that NIL,
you want your player out there.
Oh, who's paying Arches NIL?
Well, it's Acme Motors.
Oh, Acme, that's cool.
Acme Motors is like, man,
I know some losing investment to begin with,
but damn, I want to at least my guy out there at some point.
I don't know.
Arch doing quite well for himself.
He doesn't even make donating to charity.
But as I said that, as I say that,
could you imagine NIL putting a pressure on a coach
to put a player in?
because of the bunny being spent?
Yeah, you can't do that.
Although there was a, didn't Rick Barnes have a quote over the weekend?
Like you can't play like this if you're getting paid what you're getting paid or something like that?
Go find the quote.
You know what the one thing about NIL is?
You're going to have these coaches be able to be a little more forthcoming with their criticism.
You're getting paid $6.75 to shoot 41% of the free thaw and get out of practice.
Yeah, after the Rick Barnes led Tennessee volunteers beat the long.
Horn's over the weekend.
Rick Barnes talking about Chas Lanier.
I told him, I said, quote,
if you're not going to do what you're getting paid to do,
you sit over here.
Oh, such an NBA line.
This is a professional sports line.
The new era of college sports is here.
And now we're going to start seeing schools
actually literally paying these players.
Yeah.
That guy got benched.
Chas Lanier.
Was bench in the second half
because he wasn't doing what he's paid to do?
Do you know what his payment is?
No idea.
Although in Tennessee,
you probably have to pay all the guys, right?
I mean, you're going to be at one of those, you know,
blue ribbon type schools with huge economics.
You've got to pay everybody.
Yeah, somebody's getting paid.
Yeah, we talked about VCUs.
Those guys are getting, what, 275K a year?
It's got to be somewhere around there for Tennessee, you would imagine.
Well, they do have a 20,000-seat arena.
You know, so they'll, they'll, when the NCAA finally,
or finally, these schools are going to start eventually paying them now legally.
Tennessee won't to worry about it because they're filling up 100,000-seat football stadiums
and 20,000 seat basketball arenas.
And they beat, you know, the common folk in the SEC,
like they did on Saturday.
And they got destroyed by Ohio State in the playoffs.
Oh, well.
All right.
Believe it or not today, it's all things about the brand new coach of the New England Patriots.
His name is Michael Vrable.
We'll hear about that.
We are playing for auto bonama, auto bonama, autobotromama.
Autobotiv.
Autobotive.
Autobotive show tickets.
Nope, no
1979 concert one hit wonders
this week on the old prize vault today?
No, just on some 790 t-shirts.
Oh, the old 790 t-shirts.
Autobotive and T-shirts.
If you want to play, believe it or not, it's up next
here on Sports Talk 790.
7-13-212-5-790, 7-1-3-212-5-790.
Once again, I want to proudly speak for the good folks
over at Two Creeks Crossing Resort.
and it really is a resort, even though it is in the middle of the Lake Livingston area up along 59,
you turn left and you're down about 25 minutes and then you're right at Two Creek's Crossing Resort.
It's a really nice place to go.
I had a good time visiting up there, very comfortable.
First thing, you've got a nice warm staff.
You've got facilities for showers and cleaning area to take care of your clothes.
They've got an area workout area.
They've got high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the property.
Then you get over to your cabin.
open the door, you shut the door, you maybe cook something, there's microwaves and TVs and hot
