Starting point is 00:00:00 So much larger than life. Yeah. Lunch timers. I'm on my way. Is the Matt Thomas show. Yeah. Good afternoon and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show. This is Sports Talk 790.
Starting point is 00:00:33 What was so promising, only two plays ago, has some pressure off the edge. Watson then checks down. Joe Tessitore. Jones of all people. Who? Juan Jones. Name the most spectacular Taiwan Jones moment as a Texan prior to what happened Saturday. Him running on the field pregame?
Starting point is 00:02:27 I mean, his activity? Like being not being inactive? Mm-hmm. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. That's all I can say.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Let me tell you, first and foremost, happy Monday to everybody. Hello. Matt Thomas Show, Ross, Nick, Matt. We're with you till 3 o'clock today. As a sports broadcaster, we see lots of different things every year, right? We see baseball, Super Bowl, World Series, Masters, everything. So you can't think everything is the most exciting thing you've just seen, right? But as I say that, I get knots in my stomach, butterflies, whatever you want to call it,
Starting point is 00:03:08 when the Astros were going on their magical runs of the last three years, both good and bad. I got nuts and butterflies in my stomach when the rockets were going on. of the Western Conference Finals, especially two years ago against Golden State. Yes. When they were up three games of two and then Chris hurts himself and then, you know, I'm going to know for 27. But butterflies. I mean, genuine genuine excitement. Mm-hmm. I was genuine excited about what happened Saturday afternoon.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Were you? And I'll tell you this. I did. It was so easy. It would have been so incredibly easy to run to Twitter at 16 to nothing. and talk about what's your favorite Bill O'Brien's coach moment. Hey, this thing is over with. Hey, you know, Larry and Stafford don't be coming at me at Twitter saying I should buy in.
Starting point is 00:04:00 I mean, it was all that stuff. But you know what I did, Ross? I didn't say a word because I didn't think the game was over. As porous and as unimaginative and as Laramine Tensile false starting, I mean, all over. I mean, everything that was the worst of the Texans, we saw. for basically what almost three full quarters. I mean, come on now, guys. Don't make that a big deal today, please. Well, I'm not because I'm going to brag on you a little, I mean, not you, but the team.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And then JJ gets the sack. And then Deshaun and DeAndre wake up together. They start running the ball. And it was, I mean, absolutely some of the most compelling 3.30 Saturday Wild Card Action Ross I've ever seen it my entire life. Yeah, I was like ESPN's getting their money's worth. this one. Yeah, that comeback was incredible. I mean, it was basically what I said was the Texans
Starting point is 00:04:55 all season were up and down, where they wouldn't show up and then they looked great. And they did that, instead of doing it game to game or month to month, they did it inside of one game. You know if there's, you know how NFL films does a year in review? Yes. You just take that game and say, there it is. That's it. That's it. This is what happened.
Starting point is 00:05:11 The entire up and down season of the Texans was encapsulated in one game. And it was incredible. It was, I mean, you had at that point, In the fourth quarter, or with 204 left in the third, the bills, according to the analytics and win probabilities and how often people come back, the bills were 97% to win that game. The Texans came back and made a fantastic comeback. They got some help from Josh Allen taking some of the worst sacks I've ever seen. I really believe, and I said this on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I said, is he on drugs? I probably should have rephrased it. He's concussed, right? Because he took that huge hit from Zach Cunningham. Yeah. he took, the grounding penalty was God awful. The sack was even worse because he turned his body and was like literally going the other direction. Before that, you had him trying to lateral the ball a la Reggie Bush in the Rose Bowl years like 15 years ago or whatever it was.
Starting point is 00:06:04 I mean, what is, what was he doing? He threw that game. The Texans did good. Like JJ Watt, great. Deshawn Watson awesome. And that's because of pressure the Texas put on. You have to get a little bit of help. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:14 So they got a little bit of help too. If you're going to make a crazy comeback, you've got to get a little bit of help, and they got it, because Josh Allen threw that game. So you had Texans pressure amped up with JJ and company, and then you had a perfect concoction of that with a nice mixture of Josh Allen blanked his pants. Yeah, and we didn't even talk. When he fumbled the ball, when Whitney Merciless, we all thought it was a force fumble, he just dropped the ball. Yeah, nobody tapped him. He just dropped the ball. What are you doing?
Starting point is 00:06:42 That was good. That worked out. It worked out great. And, you know, the Texans, I mean, full credit to them, I picked the bills to win that game because I thought they were the more consistent team with a great defense. And they showed up at the first half. And then the second half, the Texans turned it on. And it became the Deshaun Watson show. And that he, I mean, that play at the end where he got sacked and he was dead to rights.
Starting point is 00:07:03 99 out of 100 quarterbacks are dead to rights. This game is over. He comes out of it. Then he has the wherewithal to find Taiwan Jones, who then gets all the way up the field and then Texans win the game. So I think based on the play you just described, I think we have to have a new creed on this show. And I want y'all to spread this. Okay. Nick, you're first, Ross, your second, I'm third.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Okay. Actually, I'll go first. I, Matt Thomas, will pledge never to criticize Deshawn Watson for holding out of the ball too long. I'm telling you, you have to do it. I'm not agreeing to this. You have to. You absolutely must agree to this. I'm out.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Listen, frauds. You can't be that way. Sometimes things are good and sometimes you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both together, and there you have the facts. You take Deshawn Watson. I'm telling you, I am never, and I've never been a huge, get rid of the football. I mean, that's the easiest thing you're on to Twitter. Get rid of the ball. What do you don't hold on for it?
Starting point is 00:08:04 He holds on to it because he can make magic. So you're telling me if Deshaun Watson gets sacked eight times against Kansas City because he holds on the ball too long, you're not going to cross. Criticize him for it. It was only seven against the bills. He was only seven against the bills. Yeah, I'm expecting more against Casey. The bill's got a better defense. You shut up until Thursday.
Starting point is 00:08:23 We're going to enjoy this today, probably a little bit of tomorrow. And then Wednesday we'll start talking about how. Yeah, we'll break that game down. We'll break down. I don't want to break the game. I'm actually feeling good about that game. If Will Fuller is going to play, we'll talk about that later on the week. Right now we've got to celebrate Deshawn Watson and what he did.
Starting point is 00:08:42 And yeah, you do tell you. Take the good with the bad. There were times in that game where he held onto the ball way too long. And there were times where he extended plays. And that's basically what you're getting with Deshaun Watson at this point in his career. You're hoping that he'll get better and more judicious and be able to have more of the good plays without some of the bad ones. But you got what you got on Saturday. And it was good enough to win.
Starting point is 00:09:04 He was amazing. He was amazing how he avoided the two-headed monster that was the Buffalo pass rush on that last. play to find Taiwan Jones. Taiwan Jones! I mean, if you were to go through the list of people that are eligible receivers on the roster, Duke Johnson,
Starting point is 00:09:25 absolutely. DeAndre Hopkins, sure. Any of the tight ends? Absolutely. Even DeAndre Carter. Even DeAndre Carter would make the list. Taiwan Jones would have never made the list of, first of all, when Taiwan Jones on the field, were they amputating Duke Johnson and Carlos Hidesleg at the same time?
Starting point is 00:09:42 I don't know. Bill O'Brien knew. He must have known something. I think he's getting better every week. Well, clearly. Because here he is, Taiwan Jones, who largely doesn't play, is on the football field in overtime. And not only makes the catch after Deshaun avoids the rush, but is taking it inside the five-yard line. They don't mess around.
Starting point is 00:10:03 They kick the field goal. Get out of there. And by the way, again, as someone that has been a sports host for a very long time in business communities since I was seven years old, that doesn't make up for the older's loss. Sorry, it's the Texans victory. Bless you. Not a, not a, well, we feel vindicated. Now, it doesn't feel horrible that Buffalo gets to feel a little something like that, giving up a lead.
Starting point is 00:10:25 But here's the thing. That's why I didn't go to Twitter. 16-0 in the NFL is two touchdowns. Texans are a better second-half team. They are first-half team. But what I wanted to know is, how many of you went to your Twitter accounts? Because that's what Twitter is really active on a playoff game. I mean, super active.
Starting point is 00:10:41 and y'all are just crushing a hell out of the team. And look, there were some things that were just, I mean, no fluidity, giving up big plays. Josh Allen's running for 15, 20 yards. He's catching touchdown passes. I mean, it sucked. It really did suck. And it was Fire Bill O'Brien.
Starting point is 00:11:00 There was no fire Jack Eastbury because nobody knows what he looks like or sounds like. But, I mean, there was a lot of this is garbage. I'm sick of this. I'm done. I'm giving up my PSL. I'm giving him tickets. And then old JJ Watt, who, by the way, was miced up for a reason.
Starting point is 00:11:13 And he knew he was miced up because that's his time. He likes to revel in the spotlight. Nobody would ever question that. Let me tell you, as I told you many years ago, when JJ Watt put together his bit to save our community or at least save some people and get them back on their feet, I was not going to crush. But the point is, is that JJ Watt, I don't think was asked by ESPN to put the microphone on.
Starting point is 00:11:33 I think JJ went and said, hey, put a microphone on me. I mean, he enjoys the glory. And that's each his own. But he was out there, two months removed. from pack surgery. And he gets an incredible sack. And again, Josh Allen either concussed or through the game or whatever because some of the things he was doing were so god-awful.
Starting point is 00:11:57 And the Texas is not getting a first down to close the game on a regulation was God-awful. Oh, yeah, we've got to talk about that. We've got a lot to get to today. 7-13-212-5-790. 7-13-21-2-5-790. If you want to reach out via Twitter, you can do that. that as well at SportsMT, at SportsRV, and at Pro Nick Lowe. It's also kind of the mega anniversary of this radio show with me, 10 years.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Two days ago was the official 10-year of sports talk, 790. So we're going to play a couple of sound bites. A few things here and there, little drops over the last 10 years. If you have been listening to the show for any length of time, you may remember. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Lots of playoff talk to get to. We've got a new coach in Dallas. We have a potential new first-round draft pick available in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:12:41 with a quarterback leaving their school today, so a lot to get to, but really it's more about y'all just saying, hell, yeah, that was an impressive win. 713-212-5-790. Lance McCullors. Hey, Lance McCullors. Back to Matt Thomas.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Turnball, swinging in a misstack three. On Sports Talk 790. Your home for Houston Astros baseball. I just know I wasn't going down. That's just my mentality. You won't have to really force me down to the ground. That's just me, especially in that situation. So once I split out, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:13 they kept blocking for me and they gave me a half a second to kind of read adjust my eyes and my helmet a little bit to find Taiwan and that's what I did and he made a heck of a play to get us down inside the 10 so it was good and I will always never talk about you hold the ball and ball too long not this guy well you take the good with the bad and that was great an amazing and memorable play certainly in Houston we'll always talk about that play we need the breaking news sounder here on the Matt Thomas show 1220 on Sports Talk 790. Let's go. There has been a trade in Houston.
Starting point is 00:14:06 What happened? Mark Berman confirming this, which means he didn't break the story, so somebody else did. I don't realize there are organizations that break female women's soccer trades. The Houston Dash of the NWSL trading. How do you pronounce her first name? How do you pronounce her last name? O'Hey. Kiela O'Hey to Chicago.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Kiela. Kiela O'Hey to Chicago for defender Katie Norton and a draft pick. Wow. You're saying, why would you bring this up at 1220 after a Texans won on Saturday? Doesn't matter. It does matter in this particular case. It doesn't matter. O'Hae is the fiancé of your hero number 99.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Not good. So the question begs, and we do beg questions quite a bit on this radio show. Will J.J. Watt demand the trade in Chicago. Will J.J. Watt be a Chicago bear in 2020? Yeah, that was a funny tweet by you, I'm out of sports MT. Yeah, I'm trying. Is J.J. going to be okay? I mean, he's riding high right now after coming off this win, this playoff win where he contributed
Starting point is 00:15:20 and he flipped a switch and sparked everything. You know, Chicago was closer to his home of Wisconsin. That's true, but he's, I mean, his home is Houston, Matt. That's true. But he does like going back to Wisconsin. All right. So there it is, ladies and gentlemen, J.J. Watt's fiancé on her way to Chicago whatever's. I don't even know what they're called.
Starting point is 00:15:42 I don't know. What is it, the NW. NWS. Why would you make a trade this time of year? Don't bury the headlines. They're the Red Stars. Okay. Are they a property of China?
Starting point is 00:15:53 Very sensitive topic these days. 713-212-5-790 is how you reach our show. Why didn't they trade her to the Philadelphia Hammer and Sickles? Like, what is going on here? I mean, the Philadelphia should be called Philadelphia Freedom, right? Right. All right. So I just described to you in the first segment of the show that really I don't get many butterflies of the Texans.
Starting point is 00:16:16 I got butterflies on Saturday. I would have to say in the history of my life covering the Houston Texans and talking about them. We're going on 18 years now, right? there had been probably five moments where I was like oh my God the Houston Texans did this one of them was beating Dallas
Starting point is 00:16:34 on opening night I was on the field as David Carr was running up and down on the seams with his helmet off like he just won the Super Bowl I was there I didn't I wasn't there I watched it though I slept I didn't sleep at all
Starting point is 00:16:47 I went right to the radio station after the next day to talk about the first game that was one of them Billy Miller for life J.J. Watt intercepting Andy Dalton in that first playoff game against the Natty. Yes. In the end of the first half. I was there, but I was blackout drunk.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Okay. I would have to say, um, I'm trying to think of wow moments. It hadn't been a lot. No, here's the thing. Hasn't been a lot. Tex and diehard fans have more than I do. Okay. I'm just telling you my, but yesterday or Saturday for me.
Starting point is 00:17:22 No, it wasn't in town. That was a, that was not a, that was a wow moment. That was a wow moment. It was a wild, terrible moment. But for me, Saturday. Matt Schaub's pick six on Monday night against the Ravens, that was a wow moment. Again, these are good butterflies. This is not making you nauseating.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Okay. Matt Schaub getting his ear ripped off? No, not on that either. Matt Schaub having the Liz Frank injury? No. From Albert Hainsworth? No. No.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Let's see. You're missing my point in this, pretty usual. but yeah I thought Saturday purposely poor usual yeah 16 nothing turned into overtime turned into at some point
Starting point is 00:18:03 is anybody going to win this football game and then the escape and the catch to Taiwan Jones and the kick and how about Buffalo every one of their body
Starting point is 00:18:16 I mean everyone of their players on the special teams throwing their body hoping to get just a little bit of the Kiami Fairbair by the way he's had it really good good second half. Yes. He has. And they did get close. Upon second
Starting point is 00:18:30 because I went back and watched the game again, they got really close to blocking that. I didn't notice the first time around. And every one of the Buffalo Bills players were flat on their stomachs because I think 90% of them were diving to try to do something. And didn't. And you won. And a huge
Starting point is 00:18:46 sense of relief. Because I guarantee you, when I looked at my timeline on Twitter, it's 16-0-0-the-half. It was fire this person and this person and this person. I'm never going to a game again. And I was like, you know what? I'm going to let the fans do that. Let them sort it out. Well, I just stand back
Starting point is 00:19:03 and watch the comeback. It was incredible. It was just incredible. Like I said, 97% to win the Buffalo Bills at that point. Got a little help, but you made the plays and you're on to the next and you had the perfect scenario with the Titans winning. Now you can go up, hopefully
Starting point is 00:19:20 with Will Fuller and have the confidence to at least know that you won an arrow. head. Now are they obviously underdogs, as they should be? Yes. But I don't think there's any reason to be scared. I think what was it? Seven and a half? No, it's nine and a half. Is it? No, is it up to, no way. Yeah. It got bet up that much? Well, I don't know. The first time I saw it was nine and a half points. Really? The first one I saw, I thought it opened up at like seven and a half. 7.13, two one two one two five, seven. I mean, Ross, something called JJ Watt on a mobile line is on line one. My guess is this is, Nick, you've spoken to JJ Wadden and Mobile.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Is this going to be an awful 30 seconds in my audience will never get back? Likely. Yes. Okay. Well, that's the case. Hi, JJ Watt on a Mobile. I just want to give a special shout out to Chris Gordy. We put his song on the Bill's Parity, Texan's Bill's Parity at halftime,
Starting point is 00:20:15 and it got us all riled up to come out strong. And Bill O'Brien was dancing. We were ready to go. Yeah. Thank you, JJ, Waddon, Mobile. Bless you. Sometimes those things will be a blessing, and they exactly was. I, you know, do you think grown-ass men making multi-million the dollars, you know, because they were showing JJ going to yell at these guys all throughout the course of the game?
Starting point is 00:20:41 Do you think that makes a big difference? No. I used to really think it did, but that I met professional athlete. Yeah, professional athlete. Absolutely not. College athlete, sure. Maybe a little more. High school,
Starting point is 00:20:55 for sure, more. Absolutely. I just don't. You would be, and I've said this before to a lot of people, you'd be massively disappointed on what motivates a professional athlete. It's usually just money. Money and fame and prestige. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:21:09 And when they don't win, they're sad for a while, but they get over it relatively quickly. Yeah, I think we think of all these rob, and you know you got to motivate everybody and we play the like the rocky music and all that type of stuff and maybe it has some effect but I would say maybe for like one play. The second play into the game, you're just playing football. Once you hit that field or hit the cord or whatever or hit the diamond when you're a professional,
Starting point is 00:21:37 it's just business as usual. You've been doing this your whole life. You don't need extra motivation. Yeah. You know, and we try at the Toyota Center to get people going and sometimes it helps. I thought frankly, the building at the energy when the same thing, second half. I mean, you could, you could feel it even though I was not there. It was terrific. Yeah, it wasn't like Superdome level, but it was better to say a half.
Starting point is 00:21:57 But here's the thing. At the day of the home, home field is relative. It really is. It doesn't swing. Like, I don't know if it's really worth three points. Sometimes you hear two and a half, sometimes you hear three. Sometimes people say it's worth zero. New Orleans is the loudest place in the national football league. I've never been to Arrowhead myself, but I've been to a game with the Superdome. And it is ridiculously loud. Doesn't matter. That crowd was great the whole time They're liquored up They're yelling
Starting point is 00:22:22 They're swearing at terrible things They're putting voodoo hexes on the players They're throwing beads at these people It doesn't matter And by the way, Saints fan Jiong called the show today if you'd like Because you got some explaining to do That was a bad loss I wouldn't say bad beat, it was a bad loss
Starting point is 00:22:38 And then Kyle Rudolph push off a little bit A little bit Not enough to get a flag Sorry Not enough to get a flag More phone calls coming up 1228 is our time We're going to hear from Deshawn. We'll hear from all the particulars from the game on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:22:52 What are you talking about, Bill O'Brien? He's coming up at 1 o'clock today. And, Ross, you're back in the captain's chair on that after I successfully filled in for you last week. Okay. We have NFL recap coming up as well. We have the Dallas Cowboys with the new coach, and Tua Takavaloa has made his decision about whether he's going to go back to Alabama or enter the 2020 NFL draft. 713-213. The time is 1229.
Starting point is 00:23:15 It is the Matt Thomas show, and we appreciate you listening to Sports. Talk 790. On the trail, it's hard. That he drops it down with a left hand, Emma! This is Coach Dan Tony. Matt Thomas is a great guy, and I always listen to the radio show.
Starting point is 00:23:31 On mute. What a shot! Speaking of Coach Dan Tony, he starts with us this week for his weekly half-hour visit, so it'll be Thursday at 2 o'clock here on Sports Talk 790. We will start the hashtag AskMDA, and I won't read any of them,
Starting point is 00:23:49 because they're normally never related to the rockets. Great, I got a lot of questions. They've got a lot important questions for him. I don't believe so. All right, so we were digging through some of the audio archives of this radio show, which goes back 10 years. First show is January 4th, Wow.
Starting point is 00:24:03 2010. This is my second tour of duty with IHeHRH. Of course, I was with KTRH and KBME wasn't even a sports station when I was around the last time. Clear Channel. Was it best music ever when you were still here? When did they flip? 2006, I think? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:24:17 I was. I think it flipped in 06 Yeah I think I was in Salt Lake City at the time ESPN the sport It was ESPN 790 Then ESPN 790 the sports animal And then it was just a sports animal Yeah so I was not there for any animal time
Starting point is 00:24:31 I was here when it was the animal That was a rough It was a rough lesson Um The lineup's better now Let's just put it that way I just remember and I don't mean to poke anybody But I remember
Starting point is 00:24:46 I said a previous host Sometimes you replay interviews that are interesting. Like, hey, I had AJ Hinch. AJ Hinch at 11th at 1230, so we're going to play some of it for 220. So for the audience, you know, that moves around. Refreshing, yes. They would play just repeats of their own segment. I recorded those and then replayed them.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Because I was trying to figure out what station I was going to go. I had offered some two radio stations here. Yes. And I was trying to figure out which station I was going to come work for. So I started to listen to both of them online. And they're replaying the exact same thing. I was like, what's going on down there? And they said, you got to come fix this.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Well, Nick can appreciate this as a producer. I didn't mind it that much because I could just go sit around and do nothing for 15 minutes. And so to the city of Houston, apparently. That's true. We should get back to that. Well, okay. It was like a 15 minute, you know. With that being said, should we have recorded 12 to 1230?
Starting point is 00:25:43 Yeah, we could replay it. Was it that good? No. Was it Marconiworthy? I think so. Okay. So I'm looking through a few things, and I've got a few things. Ross may have some other stuff, but I found a few things.
Starting point is 00:25:51 We were talking the other day about a Texans, people would send us songs when the team was doing one. I found this from late 2010, which would have been the 11 playoffs. Something called the Texans battle him. It's 34.9 seconds. Okay. It's worthy of a listen. Well, that would be provided that Mike, oh, you know, was I mute on my computer. Probably.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Yeah, that's your fault. I didn't do this. All right, here we go. Mike does it. All right. Doug Pike does it? Okay, here we go. Here's the Texans battle him.
Starting point is 00:26:59 The hell is that? Why did I? I'm going to erase it. There's just never a reason ever to play it again. I have no recollection of that. I don't either until I said Texas Battle him. I said, oh, I'll find out what it is. Holy smokes.
Starting point is 00:27:10 No kidding, coach. So real fast again, 10 years on the show. Thank you to Ross. Yes. You've been with me almost the entire way. Nick, you've been with me about two years, give or take. Going in and then in the last year? Has it been two years?
Starting point is 00:27:22 On a permanent basis, it's only being almost one. Thanks to all the sponsors of the show. Thanks to the audience. Thanks to my family. My coworkers, my bosses. So a deep hearty thank you for, because let me tell you, this is a tough business. It sucks. It doesn't suck.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Frankly. I mean, it's cruel at times. So thank you. And let's do another 10 years. I mean, we did do some moving around, though. We were a little bit of everywhere. Two to four. 21 to 4. When the 2 to 4 came to me, I'm like, are you sure you want to do this? And they're like, we have no control over this.
Starting point is 00:28:00 Then it was 11 to 2 for a little bit. Yeah, it went to the mornings with Lance for a while. Then 6 to 9, yeah. Now back to 12 to 3. In my rightful spot. This is the exact spot I need to be in. Good morning, lunch timers. And we've got to wait the strippers up on Friday. Nobody else does that. Let's say hi to Corey and Paralyad at 1237 on Sports Talk 7. Tony. Hello, Corey. What's happening, Matt? Hi, what's up? A couple questions for you.
Starting point is 00:28:27 Sure. You're a man of a... You have at least average intelligence, right? I would say just about the average level, yes. Okay. So, first question is, why do Texans fans believe that we... I'm a Texan fan.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Are as pure as the wind-driven snow saying no evil or bad words to anyone, but all the other fan bases are terrible and horrible in the worst thing in the history of mankind. People at the stadium. Go ahead. Okay, this weekend, the Buffalo Bills fans, they're the worst fans of all time.
Starting point is 00:29:08 They're throwing things at us and cursing and saying bad word. But the Texans, we're nice to everyone because we're from Houston. I find that ludicrous. It's untrue. You've been to the stadium. The most vile things I've ever heard come from people's mouths. Shocker, come from Texans fans, too. Well, no, it's every fan base.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Nobody is a choir. Choir boys and girls are not found in the Texans games or any NFL games. NFL fans are in a rare breed. First and foremost, because they're older. Secondly, they're probably licked up most of the time. And third, they, because when you are a college football fan, I mean, as much we tease each other about UT and Rice, or in Texas and U of H, Ross will be a Texas fan of the day he dies.
Starting point is 00:29:58 I'll be a U of H reporter of the day I die. We're not going to change our allegiance. People can jump off and on a Texan bandwagon or a Packers bandwagon fast and furious. So, yeah, there's just a combination of elements why an NFL fan is much more aggressive, and it happens in every one of the 32 stadiums. And I agree with that 100%. It just gets really old seeing Texas fans like, well, we're from Houston. We're an ice fan for boxing.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Well, who does that? I've not. I didn't hear any of that. I see it all the time on Facebook. It happened the same thing with the Astros when the Yankees were here. The Yankees fans are so horrible, but we're from Houston. We shook their hand and said, great game. That is not true.
Starting point is 00:30:42 All right. Yankees fans are terrible. The Yankees fans are terrible. I don't remember incidents of Astros fans throwing beers at. Yankee fans in the urinal and pouring beers all over them and stuff like that. What's your second thing? I guess, well, one more thing on that. My point is, drunk, terrible people are everywhere.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Correct. Let's not pretend like we're any different. Okay. My second question is, and I've banged this drum since they changed the overtime rules, I like to think logically. Can you explain why it makes logical sense that each team would not have a possession in an overtime get, like the whole game, you play 60 minutes, but if you happen to be unlucky and not get the right coin flip,
Starting point is 00:31:23 you may not get a chance to have the ball. Well, yeah. Thank you, Corey, for the phone call. I could debate this until I'm blue in the face. I frankly see both sides of it, honestly. I have, and this is terrible because I'm a sports radio host, supposed to have an opinion. I don't care.
Starting point is 00:31:39 I'm fine with the way it is. I figured this would come up at some point today. I think sometimes the college football rule is hokey. I don't like the college football rule. for NFL. I could clearly argue the fact that everybody should get one possession. And then I also have the clearly thought of, well, you know what? You had plenty of possessions to win a football game in regulation.
Starting point is 00:31:59 So you're going to bitch him out about a coin toss. It's just a rule. There's no logic to it. Like, for instance, the NFL tomorrow could change the rule to, instead of getting 10 yards for a first down, they can make it 15. It's just a rule. Everything is changeable. Yeah, I have no issue with the playoff the way it is.
Starting point is 00:32:15 If you're a Saints fan and you think you should have got the ball, I mean, it's a two-way game. It's an offensive and defensive game. Make a stop. You've got one of the best defenses in the entire league. Don't let Kirk Cousins and Kyle Rudolph march down the field and score a touchdown on you. And they could have made a stop. It wasn't that Kyle Rudolph play third and goal, I think? If you make a stop on third and goal, they kick a field goal and then you get the ball.
Starting point is 00:32:39 So if you want the ball, make a stop. It's that simple. Well, how about the, wasn't there a deep pass on the play before that, too? Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, yeah, stop them. Let me tell you, we are, we work with, we are littered with LSU and Saints fans in our office. It's almost kind of. They're crawling all over the place. And they're actually clean and they do showers. So that's, it's a bonus on both. Yeah. My buddy Robert, who works with this, it's like, I'm not complaining about the Rudolph push off. I'm not, I'm complaining about the fact that Sean Payton didn't burn a time out when they had a chance to win the football game. He's complaining about the fact that Drew Brees threw one of his worst. interceptions of his entire career. And Cameron, as soon as that game ended, my son came down and said, Matt, he says, Dad, is Drew Bree is a top 10 quarterback? And you and I have had this
Starting point is 00:33:24 conversation before. Of all time. He's right at about 10. He's not five. He's on the list. Yeah. I agree with that. I'm not trying to say it's because of the bad interception. But again, I've always said to myself, two minutes left to go in the game, I need to win a football game. Give me quarterbacks that you can get that's going to lead the victory. And Drew's on that list. It just takes a while to get there. It just does. And there's a whole generation of quarterbacks. Like, you and I Ross have never seen Johnny United's play. No. You and I never saw Sammy Ball. Bobby Lane play. Sid Luckman. You know, George Bland. I mean, there's, I'm just talking about current guys, or at least within the last 30 years. And Drew is on that list.
Starting point is 00:34:05 He did not make the top five, though. 1243. It is the Matt Thomas show. We got which talking about Bill O'Brien coming up at the top of the hour. Saints fans are in. But you Texans fans, tell me what you were really going through. Because I know on Twitter, there were people that couldn't have jumped off the ship fast enough. I saw Get Sean Payton out of there. Let's blow this thing up. Tweets. Well, three straight playoff losses and the final play, I'm probably going to do it to you. When I listen to the Matt Thomas Show, I don't even understand the eclectic nature of the show, the dichotomy, the ostentatiousness, the perfunctory that sounds about as smart as LeVar Ball.
Starting point is 00:34:40 Back to the Matt Thomas show. whoever he is. What is up? Clones, a tremendous Friday to you. My name is Jim Rome, and you're listening to Sports Talk 790. Now, some of you may remember that I host a nationally syndicated midday sports talk show. Unfortunately for me, local radio hosts are apparently better for ratings in Houston, and now you're stuck with a guy who repeatedly reminds you he is a major market radio host,
Starting point is 00:35:11 continues to pimp his website and his Twitter account and beats obnoxious soundbites into the ground on a daily basis. Come to think of it, he's not all that different from me. So, welcome into the Matt Thomas show here on Sports Talk 790. It is live from Los Angeles, just like me. War the Clippers getting over on Dwight Howard and the Rockets, War Florida Evans, and War Sports RV. I am out.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Thank you, Jim. That was back in the day when the Rockets and Clippers were playing in the Western semifinals in 2015. They did get past the Clippers. They did. It was in dramatic fashion. Dramatic, like massive comeback in the fourth quarter against the Clips, game seven in Houston. And then Chris Paul wears the gear of the air rockets the next two seasons after that. All right, 1249.
Starting point is 00:36:00 It is the Matt Thomas show. 713-212-5-790 if you'd like to join the radio show. 713. 212-5-790. And by the way, just so everybody knows, we are not going to really get into anything that we think might happen in Kansas City until... Can we wait until Wednesday? Can we celebrate today and tomorrow? We'll see.
Starting point is 00:36:24 It's going to be hard not to get into it by tomorrow. Probably. But we can... It is. I didn't realize it got up to nine and a half. Very first number I saw was seven and a half or eight. Weather should not be an issue, just cold, but not like... That's good.
Starting point is 00:36:43 I mean, it's going to be... It'll affect both sides. I mean, I like a little... As long as it's not windy. Nobody wants to see a 15 to 9 game or something like that. Well, I think the NFL does. Because the game between the... Seattle and Green Bay is going to be at 540.
Starting point is 00:37:03 540 central time, which will mean basically Green Bay will be... Well, actually, it gets darker. in the north than it does here in the south. So I can't imagine. Remember last week you were worried about or we were just talking about how are the saints going to fare outside the dome in Green Bay? I guess they don't have to worry about that. I feel awful.
Starting point is 00:37:26 New Orleans deserved to lose that game. But I really thought they were, I mean, Ross, they came in as one of the best number three seeds in the history of the NFL. 13 and 3. 13 and 3. By the daily forecast for Sunday, high of 28, low of 26 with a 30% chance of rain in Green Bay. So it's going to be probably 26 degrees, which again, Seattle gets cold too and rainy too.
Starting point is 00:37:52 So it's not like it's going to be foreign territory to them. So all things considered, it could be a lot worse. It could be like minus 13 or whatever the case may be. But yeah, the Saints deserve the most ridicule. I mean, I know the Buffalo is going to get a lot of heat for losing that 16-0 lead, but it was on the road. It wasn't like Green Bay's, it wasn't like Buffalo's offense was prolific, really, from much of the game after about the second quarter.
Starting point is 00:38:17 But Minnesota, with Kirk Cousins going down to New Orleans and winning that game, and the third straight year, they lose in the final play, which one of them wasn't their fault. Two of them was. The miracle, you know, it is. Case had to throw the pass, and Stefan Diggs had to catch it. By the way, how about Stefan Diggs's attitude yesterday for the Minnesota Vikings? He is pouting, he's throwing his helmet around, he's arguing with players. I'll say this.
Starting point is 00:38:44 There have been times where DeAndre Hopkins Ross goes into complete, where are you mode? You never see that from him. All he does is like, you know what? I'll get out there and I'll make some catches. He goes out about his business and he pets his Yorkie that's in his manbag. You can't bring that on the field. Okay, fine. He probably pets it at halftime.
Starting point is 00:39:05 But then, you know, how many times have you seen in just the last two years where Deshaun DeAndre Hapkins has zero catches or one for eight in the first half. And then he finishes the night, six for 92 with a score. That's what he is. They said, I believe the stat that gave out on the broadcast was he's like 48th in the NFL in first half yards in like second and second half yards. Totally believe it. He just turns it around or for whatever reason, Deshaun Watson finally finds him the ball. And doesn't argue with Deshawn, doesn't go up to Bill O'Brien. because let me tell you something, if you went to Bill O'Brien and said something,
Starting point is 00:39:36 cameras would be on him. Yeah, the narrative first half was Tradavius White is locking him down, and then the narrative's second half is he just, he's a matchup proof and he can do whatever he wants. He signs people. Let's go to Father Anthony calling us from the homeland at 1253. Father Anthony, happy Monday to you, my friend. Happy Monday, happy New Year's.
Starting point is 00:39:57 Guys, listen, man, it's time to get rid of Bill O'Brien. I mean, to the music for sure, because the guy, we need to get behind, we need to just bury this era. Because that fourth and one play that he called a quarterback sneak on, I love the aggressive play calling. Great call, but bad play. Why would he not, like, call a different play something to where Deshaun can, like, scramble and get a yard and a half? I mean, seriously, that play, he's so lucky to still have a job. I thought they should have fired him at halftime, actually. But, you know, I said, we'll give him another half, but we should, I mean,
Starting point is 00:40:45 if we lay an egg against Kansas City, for sure, even if we win, I mean, we got to get rid of the O'Brien guys. I mean, can I get an amen? Nope. And do you also, by the way, do you still want James Harden traded? Yes. Okay. I think you've been drinking too much of the wine, if you know what I'm saying, saying.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Holy smokes. Please, I have to believe me. I'm, I tell this, I speak to truth. He sees the light. We're not going to win with these guys. When are they ever going to know? Like, just get it through your head. Well, I got news for you.
Starting point is 00:41:22 You have a pipeline to the divine intervention. Come on. Father Anthony, it's not going to happen, my friend. It's not happening. Just pray on it. Thank you. Just pray as hard as you want to. Pray to Rabbi Jack Easterby.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Bless you. There were a handful of Bill of Brian must be fired moments in the game, right? A couple of head scratchers. I like the decision to go for it there on the fourth down at the end, by the way. Did you like the formation? The play call could have a little bit be desired. Do you have, I mean, in these situations, you have a mobile quarterback. I'd like to see the ball in his hands.
Starting point is 00:42:01 I don't mean with him sneaking on a full yard. If it's fourth and inches, sneak to your heart's delight. When it's a long yard like that, I just don't like the sneak getting called. I would have liked to see some kind of option like they did in the... RPO, maybe a little screen to fell, something. Or something. Even when they were down there in the end zone and they threw the option and Carlos Hyde dropped it, let's just a play like that.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Just Carlos Hyde hopefully doesn't drop it this time. And then the next time I go right back to him. Right. So, I mean, play call was bad. A decision was good. And here's the thing. You cannot, you know, I learn about replay rules all the time. You cannot challenge a holding call.
Starting point is 00:42:45 You can challenge a pass interference. Right. And the call was clearly a missed hold, which again, probably needs to be talked about next year at the NFL level. But that pass was, the file was committed, I think, before the ball was thrown in the air. I'm not for sure on that, but it was definitely a hold. And the PI, they never should have let them actually challenge to begin with. That was a mistake in the NFL part. So, yeah, there were quite a few moments that Bill O'Brien had his bags packed,
Starting point is 00:43:13 at least from you the Texans fans. No, very comfortably that Bill O'Brien is not going anywhere. And in fact, Mike, another extension this offseason. Probably. Would it support it stun you? No, not at all. All right. Speaking of Bill, what you're talking about, Bill, where Ross has to guess what the coach said today.
Starting point is 00:43:33 And this should be layups, right? There's nothing that went. I mean, this should be a piece. Okay, you should get five stars every single time. We'll do that next and welcome you at 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-2-1-2-7-90. It's the Matt Thomas show. There have a lot of things to get to in between now and three o'clock.
Starting point is 00:44:03 We welcome your input as well at 713-212-5-790 headlines of the day. The Dallas Cowboys are set to name Mike McCarthy, the former coach of the Green Bay Packers as the new head football coach. Question is how many of the assistants have to stick around because Jera just wants to be Jera. To a tag of Aloha has announced that he is going to skip his final year at Alabama to enter the NFL draft. And Russell Westbrook is not going to play tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:44:33 or Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks because he doesn't play him back-to-backs, and he certainly wants to play Thursday when the Rockets take on the thunder in Oklahoma City. That's interesting to me. Whose call was that? Oh, it doesn't matter. It's very obvious. Do you think Russell's going to miss – the Rockets only go to Oklahoma City one time this year. Do you think he would miss that game?
Starting point is 00:44:52 No chance. I guess – what does he want to – is he going to be – he's not going to get yelled. He's going to get booed? No, he's going to be honored. Oh, no, there's no chance in being booed. None whatsoever. Okay. No, no chance.
Starting point is 00:45:04 They will do a video tribute. They will introduce his name last. Oh, no, he'll be fine. I think. Okay. I mean, if James Harden got traded at the end of this season, James Hardin would come back and get the same sort of thing. If you got traded to the Warriors, like Chris Manick says.
Starting point is 00:45:21 It's ridiculous. So, yeah, Russ will not play Wednesday. I mean, look, I got to be honest with you, I might play against Atlanta. Yeah? I mean, there is a chance. on 10-day contract. How many minutes are you going to give them? Well, no, I would just be in uniform.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Oh, here would be emergency to the backup plan, to the backup plan, to the backup plan? I would be the hired assassin. Really? Three-point assassin? Yeah. Or are you going to take somebody out with a steel chair? Heavy knee pads, heavy elbow pads. I'm going to have to wear.
Starting point is 00:45:53 I got to wear a white shirt because I don't want my pasty white shoulders are shown on the jerseys. You'd be on the tight, high short, hiding tight shorts, the nut huggers. I'm wearing goggles. You can do the full face mask? No, just goggles. Yeah, like a Rudy T face mask? Well, like Karim Abdul-Jabar. Okay.
Starting point is 00:46:09 Yeah. The Rex Beck. Well, Hakeem wore those for like one year. Yeah, everybody that usually wears them usually takes them off because it's just so annoying. They foggy, get all fogged up and everything. So yeah, I am available for a few minutes, if necessary. Rockets, Hawks Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:46:24 Russ returns Oklahoma City for the only time this year, at least regular season. There could be a chance Rockets and Thunder playing the postseason. What's your position? I'm a stretch three. Stretch three. No, excuse me. Stretch five. Stretch five?
Starting point is 00:46:38 Yeah. You're like six foot. Six one. Okay. Well, I have a point guard. Small ball five is what we're calling. Small ball five. That's exactly right.
Starting point is 00:46:49 All right. Ladies and gentlemen, we could play sound bites of Bill O'Brien. It would be boring. We had a little sizzle to it. We simply play this. What you're your job? What's your job about? Coach O'Brien.
Starting point is 00:47:04 Nick, our producer, has given me a plethora of options here. 16 different sound bites from today's press conference, right? Wow. So you're really going to have to be on top of your game. Can't wait. Let's go with, I'm going to give you some layups to open things up with 28 seconds. J.J. Watts' impact on the defensive line. J.J. Watts' impact on the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:47:28 How many seconds? 28. Look, it was good impact. pack, but a lot of guys played well. You know, Whitney, Blackson, he's just going to start naming people, Dun, Reader. I mean, all the guys out there played pretty well.
Starting point is 00:47:44 J.G. Wadda, obviously, helped brought some energy, but I thought overall, a lot of the guys played well, and it was a good game. Good game by the defensive line. So essentially, you're deflecting the attention to somebody else. Okay, let's see how close you got. Well, I think any time up front, you know, you get a guy like JJ back. I think that obviously benefits everybody. You know, I think
Starting point is 00:48:02 that, you know, relative to, you know, JJ and his, his, you know, incredible ability, you know, he draws a lot of attention. So a lot of times, whoever you are, whether it's Whitney or DJ Reader or all of those guys are really good players. And if you're one-on-one, it's hard, you know, it's hard for an offensive line to be one-on-one with those guys. I swear to you, I did not listen to that. I swear to you.
Starting point is 00:48:27 You saw me, I came in prepped with you right there. I will have to give you credit because I know you didn't listen this out of time. I just know Bill O'Brien. God, you do know Bill O'Brien. Asked about needing...
Starting point is 00:48:46 This is no particular order. I'm just looking for stuff here. Asked about needing a faster start against Kansas City, 47 seconds. Wow. It's a lot of work there. Look, I mean, it doesn't matter who we're going up against.
Starting point is 00:48:57 We obviously want to start fast, and that hasn't been our... something that we've been great at, and it's something that I've got to look at myself, and we've got to play better, we've got to execute better, and getting going early in games is huge, and especially against a good team, like the Kansas City Chiefs on the road at Arrowhead. It's something that you're always looking forward to is try to build a lead will always help you in the National Football League. Yeah, you know, that's been, you guys know it. I mean, you're right. I mean, you guys have asked me about that all year. We've got to, we've got to figure that out.
Starting point is 00:49:27 This is not the type of game on the road versus this type of team. that we can, you know, do that. We've got to try to do whatever we can to get off to a good start. I don't think it's all about the start. I don't think it's all about the finish. I think it's about 60 minutes, but which I think we proved that the other day, that you have to play 60 plus minutes sometimes to win a game. But I do think that we have to, you know, come out of the gates ready to go.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I believe we were ready to go the other day. It just Buffalo did a great job in all three phases, especially, you know, their defense did a great job. and we adjusted at halftime, tried to do some things differently, and we were able to come out, but we can't start that way. A piece of cake. I like that it irks you when I nail these. Yeah, because I feel like after I've done it myself,
Starting point is 00:50:16 that it's not nearly as difficult. Now, I'm trying to stump it. I'm going to turn to two more here. Okay. Okay. Let's see. How much do you watch the Kansas City game in terms of getting yourself ready
Starting point is 00:50:33 for this game. As in the previous years. Are you going to look back to the win over Kansas City to prep for this week? That's 29 seconds. I mean, obviously, yeah, we'll take a look at the tape. But, I mean, we're different teams now. I mean, we're talking about playing a lot of weeks after that. So, I mean, their team is playing different.
Starting point is 00:50:53 We're playing differently. So we'll take a little bit of a look at it. But we've got to look at the tape of the whole season and try to hash out the things that we need to do to get better and ways to play better. and things that we can do. But we'll look at it a little bit, but we'll also look at the whole season. I think since it happened this year, I think, you know, look, you have to watch the game
Starting point is 00:51:11 and see relative to what you did in that game, what they did, and then, you know, relative to what is going on right now with both teams. I do think that both teams are different. You know, I do think that over the course of a season based on a lot of things, whether it's injuries or scheme or whatever that, you know, things can change.
Starting point is 00:51:30 But you definitely have to go back and look, at that as a reference point. It's like a layup drill for you. These used to be three point shots. These used to be guys with face guarding you. Now you're just going to layup line. I think it's easier to do this when they win, though. All right.
Starting point is 00:51:49 Last one, another layup, 43 seconds. 43. What do you have to do to protect Deshaun this week? Look, they got a lot of talent on the defensive line, the Kansas City Chiefs, and it's a challenge. So, I mean, we got to get the guys prepared and play better and Deshawn's got to get rid of the ball as well. So I mean the offensive line has to play well. Deshawn has to play well. It's going to our checks. We have to communicate with each other
Starting point is 00:52:17 and figure out where our protections are going. So some of that's on me, some of that's on the players and Deshawn, but we all got to do a little bit better because we know this Kansas City team is tough on the front. And I've lost it. What cut number is it? I've lost that there's so many cuts in here. There's like 60. Oh, here it is. Okay. This is you, 30, 43 seconds. Good luck. Yeah, we have to do that. I think a lot of it, there's a lot of keys to that. You know, at the end of the day, it comes down to communication, everybody being on the same page, how they see the defense.
Starting point is 00:52:52 You know, we, our system is very quarterback-centered, obviously quarterback-driven, so we've all got to be on the same page with how he sees it, and we've got to do a much better job. We can't, and everybody's involved. The Sean's involved, the lines involved, the receivers are involved, the tight ends, the backs, everybody's involved. It's not one guy. It's not one position. We all have to do a better job of coaching it. And then we have to have a really good week because the Chiefs, you know, they do a lot of things that you're going to have to be ready for. And so we have to have a great week.
Starting point is 00:53:21 Okay. Here's the thing. If we do this again this week, when Bill O'Brien speaks next, we're going to let the audience play because you've mastered this. This is like you doing the same maze, the same crossword puzzle. You've been all the answer's right. Mm-hmm. I've been sharpening my skills over the years. Shaduku level now has to go up a few levels. It's just awful. How well you knocked it out of the park. We're going to toughen these up, Nick, and we're going to let the audience play because Ross is no, I mean, I can't give him a black belt anymore.
Starting point is 00:53:54 There's no higher belt than a black belt. 713-212-5-7-90. If you'd like to join us, again, we are not discussing. And by the way, everybody got so mad at me when I said, who do you like early on Texan chief? Just get a little early gauge. Can you let us celebrate for a while? Yes, I can.
Starting point is 00:54:12 People got mad? Would you tweet that or something? Yes. Let me look at the mentions. People coming after you? There were some people, yeah. But that's fine. If you're not being come after, it means you've got nothing that means anything.
Starting point is 00:54:24 I don't even know Man Be Pamby Nikes tweets every single time. By way, the block key is a good key in 2020. I'm having a fun time with that one. 713-212-7-90. 12 is the time. We welcome your phone calls. We welcome your insights. We welcome the fact that our...
Starting point is 00:54:38 team, our team, America's team, survived a 16-0-0 deficit to win in overtime in what was one of the craziest walled card games ever. 7-13-212-5-7. This is Cougars head coach Dana Holgerson. Matt's kind of like Shasta without putting on a costume. He's a big old... The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 7-90. We have a lot to get to on the other three games. We'll do it. really in depth at the bottom of the hour. But I do want to mention a couple of headlines again if you're just bumping around town. First of all, it's
Starting point is 00:55:14 Matt, Ross, and Nick. Hi. This is kind of our quasi-10th anniversary special. It is Saturday was officially 10 years of 790. That's true. But it was on Saturday. You were on the Sports RV show. That show's very good. I think so. I didn't listen to it, but I understand it's very, very good. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:55:31 So what is believe it or not today? Oh. Crickets Nick. That should be really on cue. If we not learn anything about the show, there you go. Well, we did Bill's players. It's a little early to do Chiefs players. You want to do it, but you want to do JJ's fiancé?
Starting point is 00:55:48 She got traded today. You want to do Matt Thomas Show Fax? Yeah, let's do it. You're going to have to help me with that. Yeah, I can do it. All right. So bottom of the hour, lots of on the other NFL games, including what we just, we had a little conversation off air,
Starting point is 00:56:00 which was quite frightening yet exciting at the same time about what could be the AFC championship game. Think about it, first day. We'll do the bottom of the hour. A couple other sound bites I want to play from the history of the show. Lance and I worked together in the morning for a couple of years. And this was the time where Pokemon... Pokemon Go was taking over the world.
Starting point is 00:56:22 It stopped now, right? I think still people are into it. But not nearly it was. I just saw a new story about people walking on to military bases playing this game and getting in trouble for that. Oops, don't do that. Is that a potential non-Florida story? I don't know. I'd have to look and read the story again.
Starting point is 00:56:37 By the way, I'm getting so many nice people sending me stories about non-photo stories. They're sending me stories I've already read, which means you need to listen to show. It's okay. They're trying. But they're trying. At least the effort is there. All right. So we had some, we have a listener that went to Greenspoint and ran into a Pokemon.
Starting point is 00:56:56 Yes, it was a leaner. Yes. It was a listener. I was trying to say reader and listener for some. Yeah. Listener. It was in the Greenspoint area. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:06 Shout out five, six. Yeah. And, well, they wrote a, they wrote a tweet or an email. And we were like, we need Matt to read this. So I did. And here's how it went. Bro, I just had to knock a shit out. So I'm at Greenspoint Park playing Pokemon Go, trying to take over these gyms.
Starting point is 00:57:20 And this dude with no shirt on come up to me and ask me if I f*** around. And I was like, what? Then he said it again. And I see his card. And it came closer to me. So I dropped him. This Pokemon, Go shit, dangerous, L.O.L. That's one of my favorite moments ever.
Starting point is 00:57:38 and then of course we made several drops out of that yes um we used to do obligatory astros call we don't do that anymore i think we burn the main sounder no it's i haven't okay but here is the backup sounder to that listen how good this sounds obligatory astros call on 790 yeah it was a listener isn't that good yeah it was one of our listeners made that yeah a couple of things um we get some strained calls, this was a midday call. This was not a 10th inning call. Day drinking sometimes can happen here on sports talk 70 for some reason, including this caller talking a little baseball,
Starting point is 00:58:20 at least trying to spice the game up a little bit. With all these home runs, I wonder in the history of baseball, has anybody ever hit a home run and ran the basis backwards? And if so, would the umpire call him out or what? You mean start from third base and go around? Exactly. If you get it like a 10 run lead, just do it for entertainment, I guess. That'd be hilarious. Are you there? Thanks for the phone call. 948 on Sports Time 7.30.
Starting point is 00:58:57 It was. Never changed, 10-th inning callers. Never change. Oh, that was a 10-th inning call. You know, it's funny. It was 10-thening. He could have also said, well, if you hit a home run and run backwards, you know, like going from a home plate to first place running backwards
Starting point is 00:59:17 and then running backwards from first base to second base, running backwards from second base to third, and then running backwards third base to home. I mean, your theory could do that, but there's just one rule. The base running in baseball is counterclockwise. It just is. And I don't care if you have a 10-to-one lead
Starting point is 00:59:39 or you're up by 10 runs, you can't start at third and go around the other direction. And by the way, if you decided to hit a home run and you wanted to run backwards towards first base and backwards towards second, you'd probably be involved of a massive brawl involving both teams. Because your teammates would say stop showing up the opponents. And the other team would be like,
Starting point is 01:00:01 how dare you try to do this against us? We're going to beat your ass. Yeah. So we did find out that there had been some people that have run backwards to first base. Jimmy Pearson. saw did backwards all the way around. But that would not work out in 2020.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Or 19 or 18 or for that matter this century. No. That was a great moment in tempting histories. We've had a lot. We've had, we've had, we, there was a legendary female caller to the show. That's true. That we cannot find audio of. Yes.
Starting point is 01:00:30 Who basically was flirting with me on the ear. Well, yeah. She was like, you know, I know you have kids and it's tough and, and, you know, you have a wife who you love. But, you know, I just wanted to say, what's up? So what's up? That's what she said. Yeah. And I was ill prepared for it.
Starting point is 01:00:47 Yeah, that was a great. I was trying to get back into the baseball. And it just didn't pan out that way. Her name was Angela. And she, I don't know, I wonder where she is. She was on Twitter for a while. Yeah. And then probably her husband found out that she was openly flirting with a radio host.
Starting point is 01:01:02 Her name's spelled like Angelia with an eye and it was like with a 16 in there somewhere. But she was definitely a highlight of the 10 years. here. I haven't had his squirt in years. It's delicious. Yeah, you could just pepper those in all day, too. See, I didn't want to put those in there because that's just inappropriate. There's like four, I wouldn't look at Ross's audio. We have our own personal files. We can hide our own audio. And 80% of what Ross has in his Ross personal audio is drops of me. That's not 80%. That's not true at all. At least 40% of it is Mighty's drops. That's true. Mighty Gwen. He's doing okay.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Okay, so Mike McCarthy gets the Cowboys Jones. The Dallas Cowboys, well, meaning Jerry Jones, only interviews two people, Marvin Lewis and him. Mm-hmm. I mean. So Marvin is a Rooney. Was he a Rooney. Probably. Had to be in right?
Starting point is 01:01:52 Probably. Mike McCarthy is going to make a lot of money, five-year contract, making more money than Jason Garrett made. Mike McCarthy was, would you rather have Mike McCarthy or Ron Rivera? I know that Ron Rivera started or got the job of the Redskins faster. Hmm. I like Mike McCarthy. I think he's a good football coach. I do. I'm going to go Ron Rivera.
Starting point is 01:02:14 Ron Rivera with a good OC, and I guess you're thinking Mike McCarthy would a good D.C. Correct. I think both are good coaches. I think they were two coaches that did need to be fired that absolutely deserved another opportunity
Starting point is 01:02:24 and are getting the opportunity because they deserve it. I would go with Ron Rivera. I just, I mean, I feel like if you're Mike McCarthy and he had, how long was he with the Green Bay Packers? Over a dozen years, right? It was like a decade or more, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:39 I mean, and you win one Super Bowl with Aaron Rogers and a lot of the talent they had. I think he had more talent over the balance of his career than Ron Rivera did on his teams. But Ron's teams only went to ones. They were good. They went to one Super Bowl and didn't win it. And that was when they lost to the Broncos, right? Von Miller had the touchdown and all that stuff. So I put three coaches. Ron Rivera, this is what do they say?
Starting point is 01:03:05 And they had a lot of good talent in the D. Mary F. Ron Rivera, Mike McCarthy, Bill O'Brien. Answer my question. I will I don't know where to go with this one. You have completely thrown me off. This is not happening a lot on the ship.
Starting point is 01:03:26 Thankfully, because you do it a lot of throwing me off. I will kill Bill O'Brien. Okay. O'Mary, Ron Rivera. F. Mike McCarthy. You worry about the. birth control later. Would you please save that soundby for him?
Starting point is 01:03:42 We finally got him on something. You like it hard. She likes it soft. That was in regards to a mattress. All right. Before we get the NFL, let's get you one more sound bite of some of the best of yesterday year. Super Bowl. Radio Row is always a favorite place to go.
Starting point is 01:04:01 We went to New Orleans. And unfortunately, we didn't have a great broadcast spot to begin with. We were right next to. the Chamber of Commerce of New Orleans, like come visit Nala kind of thing. And they didn't realize that there was a major market radio show going on in the middle of the show when they decided to bring the house band with him. I have no idea what Hell you said it, but I'm sure a great point. Matter of fact, YLJ, I'm going to do it for him. I'm going to give you a chance for you and I to debate in a couple of minutes, but it won't be a second.
Starting point is 01:04:49 like this. You're yourself down. I am trying to do a show. It's not working. It's not working. Stop. They don't care. It's getting more quiet now, though.
Starting point is 01:05:11 You're starting to draw attention to yourself. You're starting to embarrass yourself, Matt. Don't embarrass yourself. Don't embarrass our station. Don't embarrass yourself. Don't embarrass our station. Words. Wise words.
Starting point is 01:05:27 128. NFL recap. All three games, not involving the Texas. were dramatic in their own ways, right? Mm-hmm. Maybe not the Seattle Philadelphia game.
Starting point is 01:05:38 Although... It was close to the end. Carson Wentz, how do you think he's your future when he just can't stay healthy? Houston Sports changes by the minute.
Starting point is 01:05:49 Stay connected with up-to-the-minute coverage of your home teams on Sports Talk 790 and Sports790.com. All right. We have a couple of more great moments
Starting point is 01:06:02 in the 10-year history of the show. We just unearthed a couple more. We found two of them within the last couple of years that were just fantastic. One is about James Hardin and one is about our president. You do not want to miss them. They are coming up between now and 3 o'clock. Ross right now gets us around the NFL,
Starting point is 01:06:21 and there's no talk of the radius. The Raiders. Yeah, we can go ahead and start this off. We're going to go in chronological order of the games that were after the Texans, 3.30 start on Saturday. We'll go starting off with the end of a dynasty in
Starting point is 01:06:38 Foxborough. Brady in the end zone takes the snap, looks, fires, pass, batted up in the air intercepted, and returned for a touchdown. Tytons, Logan Ryan, with nine seconds to go.
Starting point is 01:06:56 Nine seconds to go, they go for two, don't get it, but it doesn't matter. The Patriots can't muster up anything on offense as has been their problem towards the end of the season. Matt, first I'll ask you, and then we'll hear from Bill Belichick on the matter. Is Tom Brady going to be the quarterback for the New England Patriots week one? I'm going to have you rephrase the question. Will Tom Brady be a quarterback in 2020?
Starting point is 01:07:23 My answer is absolutely 100%. Yes. Okay, well answer the question the way I phrased it. Will he be the New England Patriots quarterback week one? No. And I will give you... I will give you two locations. Okay.
Starting point is 01:07:39 I think the number one chalk pick. Hold on. Let me put this in my Nostra wrongest file. Now, if I get this right, I want credit. If you get it wrong, so we put it under the rug. Correct. The number one place I envision him playing. The Los Angeles Chargers. Really?
Starting point is 01:07:59 Philip Rivers moves on. He takes over. Hmm. Interesting. And the number two place? This one I'm just throwing out just to throw out. The number two place he goes, this is just a complete guess, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ooh, okay, okay. If I get either one of them right, I want my proper do.
Starting point is 01:08:21 Is that fair, guys? We'll give it to you, Matt. Let's hear from Bill Belichick asked about it. Now, this is kind of a long sign butt, but the entire thing is gold. Bill Belichick getting combative with the reporter asking about the future of Tom Brady. Obviously, given Tom Brady's age, and there's been a lot of time. talk about his future. Do you have a timeline in your mind for when you'd like to sit down in the time? No. Do you have, would you like to get clarity on his situation by the time the
Starting point is 01:08:44 new week year starts? Look, I mean, I know it's out there just like there's a lot of other things out there. I mean, we could bring up 50 questions just like that one. And I told to what my state is on that. And so you can ask all 50 of them, and it's going to be the same answer 50 times, Ben. We've been working on Tennessee. It's 12 hours after the game. I'm not going to talk a lot of things about the future. because it's not, I'm not prepared to talk about. I don't have 50 questions. I'm sure you do.
Starting point is 01:09:10 You can name 50 guys, 50 coaches. I mean, there's plenty of you could talk about anything you want. But in the future, there are all questions that need to be answered at some point in time, by the organization, by myself, by the coaching staff, by some of the players. But those are collective decisions that are not made by one person. They're made collectively. There's a lot of time and thought and effort and communication that goes into that, and now is not the time. I certainly appreciate that. I have just one more. If Tom says he wants to come back and play, and this is the same answer that I just gave you. We just keep going if you want to.
Starting point is 01:09:44 Did you remember the whole question because you talked over some of it? I said if he says he wants to play, is he your quarterback next year? And I gave it the same answer that I just gave you on the other ones, and we can go through some more if you want to. That's fine. What about you, Bill? Will you be back here coaching this team next year? I've just answered all these questions. All the future questions are the future. We're 12 hours, less than 12 hours after the game. I think anybody that's competitive and has been in this type of situation, all your focus is on the game, you know, it's not on something else.
Starting point is 01:10:13 So hopefully you can respect that. But if you can't, then I've done the best I can to explain it. I'm sorry. It's as simple as that. By the way, I want to change my second option. Okay. So I want you to erase Jacksonville. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:30 This is my buddy Harris. You get credits for this. You just texting me. Carolina Panthers. Carolina. Interesting. So now I'm on the record. First choice.
Starting point is 01:10:40 On the record. LA Chargers, second Carolina. I'll go on the record and say he's the New England Patriots starting quarterback week one. How about Bill Belichick getting upset with reporters? That's just never a dull moment with that. Well, here's the thing. Why does the NFL force him to go up there? It's 12 hours after the game.
Starting point is 01:10:59 I mean, they could have asked him all this after the game. on Saturday 9, nothing is going to be changed. I mean, I know you have to ask it, but it was asked, it was answered. I appreciate it. And I actually don't blame him for San. I don't have the answer to this. Right. Continue on.
Starting point is 01:11:15 But I do appreciate the audio that we got from her. All right, moving along, let's go to the New Orleans Saints versus the Minnesota Vikings and upset in the Big Easy. Third and goal from the four. Kirk takes the snap. Looks right. Fade left. And it is caught.
Starting point is 01:11:35 Touchdown! The Minnesota Vikings have beaten the New Orleans Saints. 2620 in overtime. And this game indeed was a San Francisco treat. Oh, a San Francisco treat? What? Because they're going to San Francisco. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:11:54 You know, sometimes a play-by-play guy's got to throw in on something a little kitsy. Oh, we all do it. Well, that's what he did. Of course, the play there, a lot of people questioning whether or not there was a push-off from Kyle Rudolph. Sean Payton was asked about it, and basically, as he should have, Dodge a question.
Starting point is 01:12:11 An explanation on the last play, did you think it could have been over? Listen, that wasn't, I didn't, really, I didn't see any officials. I saw Mike,
Starting point is 01:12:24 we chatted for a little bit and saw some of the other players we coached in the Pro Bowl and congratulated them, and they did a good job. They played well. So, Matt, number one, should that have been
Starting point is 01:12:36 called, we discussed this earlier. And number two, the more I think about it, the more I think it maybe wasn't that huge of an upset, because you look at the Viking, I mean, they have talent on all three levels of their defense. You've got Dalvin Cook, Stefan Diggs, Adam Thielen, and I know they're just 10 and 6, and they were
Starting point is 01:12:52 a little bit up and down. The Minnesota Vikings are really talented team. The reason why no one gave them any faith outside of the state of Minnesota was because Kirk Cousins usually yacks it up in the biggest moments. He made huge plays towards the end. especially in overtime. The big one to, I believe it was still Kyle Rudolph,
Starting point is 01:13:08 that caught that one down at the one or two yard line, and then, of course, the game-winning touchdown. So hats off to Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings on to San Francisco. Let's move it along here on the Ross's recap, the final game of the evening. It was the Seattle Seahawks taking care of business on the road. Lock it goes in motion. Russell Playfake.
Starting point is 01:13:31 Now he's going to throw down the middle. Got a man. Metcalfe! makes the catch diving. He is in for a touchdown. Seahawks, what a play by the rookie D.K. Metcalfe gets in behind the secondary, makes a diving catch, hits the ground, gets back up, and then drags a defender to the end zone. Seven the catches, 160 yards, and a touchdown. D.K. Metcalf, one of the big stories, of course, though, the biggest story was Carson Wentz going down in the first quarter, only had three yards,
Starting point is 01:14:04 passing on one of a four of attempts. And then Josh McCown came in, the oldest player in NFL history to make his playoff debut. Here's what McCown had to say after it. He was emotional. My wife and my family, it moved around a lot and been a lot, been there for me. And so to go out there and get to play in a playoff game was special. And I can't think of enough from their support. It's a heck of a ride.
Starting point is 01:14:27 I left it all out there. I know that much. So Matt, I've had trouble buying into the Seattle Seahawks all year because they've just been up and down and if they've been getting fortunate breaks, I've got a break here with Carson Wentz going down. How much do you believe in the Seattle Seahawks and their chances up against the Green Bay Packers next week? I do not.
Starting point is 01:14:45 I think Green Bay is going to, I think Green Bay has had a chip on its shoulder because no one is giving Green Bay a chance. Kind of like what Minnesota went through. Green Bay, your division winner. You know, Aaron Rogers has to have the type of season he had in yesterday year. I think 20 degrees in rain, potentially, in Green Bay is a great elixir for them.
Starting point is 01:15:02 And I think Green Bay wins that football game. Okay. Setting up Green Bay against. We'll make our predictions later in the week. Ooh, okay. I think we might be able to see another upset. But yes, Green Bay favored by four. Just give the quick spreads on everyone.
Starting point is 01:15:17 San Francisco favored by six and a half. Baltimore favored by nine. The biggest dog on the slate. The Houston Texans, underdogs by nine and a half points at Arrowhead. Yep. We were talking about this all fair. We can cut the music now.
Starting point is 01:15:32 there is a chance Tennessee and Houston play for the AFC championship. There is a chance. And it would be in Houston, Texas. It would be the third time in five weeks the teams played each other. And there would be an excitement
Starting point is 01:15:50 yet not being able to sleep moment for the diehard of diehard Texans fans. And frankly, probably the city of Houston because it's the old is the oldest coming here, somebody is going to the Super Bowl named from the AFC South.
Starting point is 01:16:05 By the way, AFC South, two teams in the field of eight. And the NFC West has two teams. And the AFC East has Bubkis. That's true. Thanks to the AFC South. AFC South, you know what?
Starting point is 01:16:24 We're beating our chest today. Not that bad. It's not like in college football. We're like Texas Roots for Texas Tech. SECC. Nobody's screaming in AFC South, are they? Big 12, big 12. Not happening.
Starting point is 01:16:35 I root for the big 12 teams in bowl games that aren't championship. Now, oh, you, I root against you. Did you root for Oklahoma? No, because if there's a chance they're going to win the championship, hell no. If they're playing in the, I don't know, the Outback Bowl, sure, go ahead and win Oklahoma. Can I hear you scream boom or sooner in one of those situations? I will puke in your mouth before I do that. Oh, I got gross kind of quick.
Starting point is 01:16:54 143 on the Matt Thomas show. We kick off the 2 o'clock hour in 15 minutes with more highlights, more songs. and more emotion of our team winning a what was weird, frustrating, electrifying, butterflies and stomach game for me. It just was. I don't get that very off with the local football team. 713-212-5-7-90. Yo, this is Bun B, and my wife is the biggest fan of the whitest man in America.
Starting point is 01:17:27 Matt Thomas, Matt Troll. Reckless, ratchet, and don't give a fuck. 149 on the Matt Thomas show. We will run through again some of the highlights. We missed the Kiami Fairbairn call. We need to get that in there, too. Did you think I thought Joe Tessator and Booger doesn't bother me as much as other people do? People hate Booger.
Starting point is 01:18:10 People don't like the booger. They have that meme of him holding his hands up and then they just put something really obvious on it. That's getting a lot of retweets from the folks right now. Say, hey, if the Titans score more points in the Patriots are going to win and it's a picture of Booger. They need to change. He is a captain obvious. But, I mean, I think. here's what they have to do.
Starting point is 01:18:25 There is an analyst out there that does occasional games on NFL network and does radio for Westwood 1. Kurt Warner needs to be in that spot. If Peyton Manning is not going to come out of retirement, which would he be a megastar
Starting point is 01:18:39 and you can't go get Tony Romo. You go get a solid NFL guy who's not going to be Shecky, you know, not going to be a comedian. He's going to be an analyst. And you add Kurt Warner. Kurt Warner's very, very good. You get, you say, Kurt,
Starting point is 01:18:53 you're our guy. You can do your Sunday NFL stuff on the NFL network, and then you can travel right after your little show. You can double dip if you want to and be our analyst on Monday night football. Booker is fine. Booker should be doing college games. Booker is not as horrendous as people thinking is.
Starting point is 01:19:11 The stage is just too big. Yeah, he's okay. I don't have a big problem. I mean, I don't hardly ever have a problem with me either. It seems like people just love to complain no matter who's up there. People who love Chris Collinsworth, people who hate Chris Collinsworth. Most people love Tony Romo. There's people out there who hate Tony Romo.
Starting point is 01:19:28 I think he does a fantastic job. I mean, it's just you're never going to please everybody with your play-by-play guys or your color guys. Either way. No, nobody's universe. I mean, in the history of sports broadcasting, there are about five people that are universally loved. Right out the top, Vince Gulley. I've never found a human being that thought Vince Gully did a terrible job. He sucked.
Starting point is 01:19:51 Just kidding. I'm trying to think of anybody else that would be in this world of sports broadcasting. I mean, people didn't like CoS. Some people didn't like CoSelle. Oh, CoSel was very, very fit right down the middle. Okay. Jason Witten was pretty much universally hated. Yeah, there's been guys who've been universally hated. Tony Cornhizer, Dennis Miller.
Starting point is 01:20:12 Any of those, yeah. I think, I'm not saying 100%, but I bet it's in the 85% tiled, Kevin Harlan. I think there's probably 15% that think that he's a screamer and over sells things. I would not be one of them. I love him. He's just a fantastic person and a great broadcaster. And a sweetheart. And a sweetheart.
Starting point is 01:20:35 But booger to me, I mean, I would have the analyst. You'd be hard pressed to find somebody that hated John Madden. I'm saying there were some. Towards the end. Towards the end. But I mean, hey day on CBS, heyday on Fox. him and Summerall were about his perfect
Starting point is 01:20:53 one-two combination because Summerall laid out he called the play and then he took a step back and let John do all the boom-bob hits and the telestrian and all that kind of stuff you know what I'm saying? I mean that's to me
Starting point is 01:21:04 my and we're not friends I'd like to say we're friends but Jim knows me but Jim Nance I thought you're all boys I don't know if Jim Nance is universally loved I did nobody hates Jim Nance I don't think you hate him
Starting point is 01:21:16 but I don't think anybody goes and says I want Jim Nance to call my game. I would be more than happy. If you gave me 16 weeks of Jim Nance, I think Jim Nance was already outstanding with Phil Sims. I think he got better with Tony Romo. The thing of it is, and I'll tell you this, having a good partner will make you better.
Starting point is 01:21:35 Yes, that's true. That's why I speak to myself on Rockets broadcast. I don't have a partner. Oh, I'm talking about you. Yeah, you made this show's better for sure. But I mean, some of the greats, Ernie Johnson does the studio show. I think it's the best studio show ever is the TNT inside the NBA.
Starting point is 01:21:52 It's because he can traffic cop between three guys that are completely out of control, Charles, Kenny, and Shaq. Yeah. I think Chris Fowler and then now is it what Reese Davis does the Game Day show. That show is amazing because you get the, you know, Desmond and you get Chris giving you the analysis, and then you got Lee who's just kind of propped up there, unfortunately. But the point being that show moves and has great elements. Hayday added to the show and it was made an interesting fun of it.
Starting point is 01:22:20 Yeah, since his stroke, he just hadn't been the same. Right. And that's to be totally expected. Analyst-wise, it'd be very hard to find somebody that hated John Gruden. Hard to find. Gruden and Tarika was one of my favorite times. It'd be hard to find somebody that hated, as I said, Man in his heyday. I like Chris Collinsworth a lot.
Starting point is 01:22:40 I think some people run hot and cold with him a little bit, but I think he's pretty much liked. And then really nobody else stands out in terms. terms of, oh, this guy is amazing or this guy is awful. Right. It's just easier to, for fans, and I would include ourselves in a mix on this, it's easier to criticize those that make the mistakes. Like, I always thought Tim McCarver was the master of the obvious. You know how you said, Booger McFarland team that scores the most points win?
Starting point is 01:23:04 Tim would be the classic character of, well, you know, the counts three, two, and if the next pitch doesn't cross the plane and doesn't swing, it's a ball, and I mean, there's a walk. Now, if he swings on it, then it misses, it's a strikeout. Like I thought it was funny the other day in the overtime, the official saying there must be a winner. Oh, thanks. Did you notice that? No. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:23:26 He said, we will play. Do we get a winner? I think when that speech started, I either went up and went to the bathroom or something. Which my guess is he has to say that because overtimes don't typically go that way. By the way, I hate the 10-minute overtime rule. Well, it's 15 in playoffs. That's no, but I'm saying, go to 15 during the regular season. I don't want a tie under any circumstance.
Starting point is 01:23:45 It doesn't bother me. You know what ties are like, don't you? They're like you get half a win. No, you kiss your sister. No, I don't. No, I don't. You do, you know that. I've told you to them multiple times.
Starting point is 01:23:56 No, I'm good. All right, before we get to the restart, the reset of the 2 o'clock hour, we've got a couple more sound bites. I want you guys to play of the history of the show. Yes, we've been playing classic Matt Thomas show bits throughout the show, and they've got some good ones coming up, especially in the next hour as well. This is Caller Stan. Is this Stan with Hardin, right?
Starting point is 01:24:15 or Stan the Trump guy? I believe John is the Hardin guy and Stan is the Trump guy. No, I might have it flipped. I can't remember. We're going to play both. We'll do this hour and one next hour.
Starting point is 01:24:27 Here is call or Stan to the Matt Thomas show. Let's go to Stan and Cyprus on 7-9 at your 1255. Hi, Stan. Hey, how you doing? Good, friend. What's up? Yeah, just about Hardin. You know, obviously,
Starting point is 01:24:44 Curry's a favorite. And Rose is a still good story, you know, so he's getting the vote. Those are all fan votes. But from a guy, you know, I'm 50. I hooped all my life, grew up in it. Watching James Harden play is painful. And he's painful to all my hooping buddies. We're old school, man.
Starting point is 01:25:03 Number one, he's huge. He's massive. Sorry about that. He's massive, but he plays like he's 5-11. He's flopped around like a little Euro soccer player. and that step back that they love the fans of Houston Rockets love that step back it's a travel period it's not a travel no it's not a trap no Stan Stan Stan I'm gonna be calm about this Stan he does it he's done by you're an idiot it's a travel so stupid he and all his hooping buddies say it's a travel Matt well he's hooped all his life
Starting point is 01:25:42 yes he's in his 50s and he and his hooping buddies are tired of these soft flopping around traveling James Hardin. You know, I do make a comfortable living. Yes. It's for days like that. That guy's amazing. The 2 o'clock reboot is next. He said he picks up the ball and takes two steps and that's a travel.
Starting point is 01:26:00 No, that's called not a travel. He literally just spelled it out how it's not a travel. Correct. He didn't want to hear that. Oh, we got Calder John to get to. We've got, oh, I'm singing the Texas fight song. Oh, we can play that one. And then I have the alarms going off in the hotel while I'm trying to do a show in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 01:26:20 All that in the final hour of the Matt Thomas show. This is Sports Talk 790. 713212-5-790. Is the Matt Thomas Show. 203 on Sports Talk 790. It is the final hour of the Matt Thomas show for this Monday. The Texans have advanced. You certainly didn't think that was going to be the case under being down 16-0 late the third, but magic happened.
Starting point is 01:27:00 Here's Watson now, blockers in front, inside the 10, lowers the shoulder and in. So they quickly go to the line for the two-point conversion. Here's Watson, looking for something. Can he get there? Reaching out for the two-point conversion. Bring pressure, it's picked up, who forced the fumble. The Olksons are in great shape now. As the ball's at the five now.
Starting point is 01:27:42 Watson, here's Hyde. This time it's secure. And they're bringing everybody from Buffalo. Two-point attempt. Watson, Howard, 27. I'm Jacob. What was so promising, only two plays ago, has Watson pressure off the edge. Watson then checks down the Texans.
Starting point is 01:28:57 The Texans are survivors, Matt. And this has got a Houston tie with Destiny's Child. Good friend of the show. Beyonce, is she a good friend of the show? I think she's been on the show before once, right? Has she? I don't know. I'm just thinking.
Starting point is 01:29:19 Or is that going to be in the Believe it or not? If you know your Matt Thomas show history, you're going to do well in today's Believe it or not. All right, 32 minutes left on a poll question I put up right after the game's Saturday, I think. Yeah. And, by the way, I will never use the term first blush because Nick got mad at me for saying first blush. I should just said, first reaction. Is that bad? It's something you say a lot.
Starting point is 01:29:41 It's a matte phrase. I got no problem with the madism. Yeah, but Nick attacked me on Twitter. People like that. Yeah. Do you ever know some people like to attack you on Twitter? Very rude. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:51 Generally speaking, you all are rude people. I usually just attack you to your face. That's true. I do appreciate that. It's the direct one. Who do you got? 1,508 votes are in. 55% of the Texans are going to win
Starting point is 01:30:03 Chiefs at 44.9. 55.1 to 44.9. I'm going to hold off a prediction until Friday. It's going to be very difficult to do so. Okay. The difference is going to be... I've got mine. The difference is, well, I have the same prediction based on the nine and a half points
Starting point is 01:30:21 that the folks in Las Vegas are giving the Houston Texans. Seems a touch high to me, if I'm being honest. Yeah. Because playoff games typically don't go to that kind of level. look at the four games we had this week. Everything was close. Yeah, was anything, what was the biggest margin of victory? Was it eight with the Seahawks?
Starting point is 01:30:42 That's it. And that was in Seattle. I mean, in Philadelphia had a chance late in the game to win that one. Yes, they did. Or at least tied. Yeah, they were driving. So it looked like the unders hit all weekend and the point spreads were
Starting point is 01:30:54 all the games were very, very close. Well, if you got Texans at two and a half you covered, if you got it at three, you pushed. All right, so we'll make our official predictions on Friday's show. 713-212-5-7-90. If you'd like to join our radio show today, 7-13-212-5-7-90. Let's go to Kevin in spring at 207 on Sports Talk 7-90.
Starting point is 01:31:18 Kevin, good afternoon. Hey, Matt, good afternoon. Great show. Thank you. Always listening first-time caller. Just to comment on the football analyst. Sure. I think we've got to put Frank Gifford on the list.
Starting point is 01:31:31 He was one of the best. He had the Monday night spot alongside Howard Cosell for years, and Frank did an outstanding job. You know what he was, and this is as a play-by-play guy, and then eventually he moved to color along with Dan Dierdorf when Al Michaels. He was just solid. He didn't give you the memorable call, but he made very few mistakes. He accepted when Al Michaels came to the booth, made it work, and you know what? Carved out a, I mean, a 30-year broadcast history after being a very successful NFL. Failed player. By the way, another name that was brought up on Twitter. My buddy Bond had sent
Starting point is 01:32:07 this to me. I don't know if there's anybody that ever hated Keith Jackson calling a game. Keith Jackson was the voice of college sports. Yes, he was for a long time. And also, for that matter, Vern Lundquist. Did anybody ever think Vern Lundquist sucked? He kind of lost it at the end there. They all do it at some point. And so did Keith Jackson. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, those are people. Frank was there for a long, long time. And I thought he was it rock solid.
Starting point is 01:32:32 Yeah, probably what, 35 of those years? Thanks to Kevin for the phone call. Good suggestion. Keith Jackson did the original year on Monday Night Football in 1970, and then they moved him to college football because Frank Gifford took over in 1971. And, yeah, most of my memories of Monday Night Football are Earl Love You Blue to what it is today. And Frank was good. I have no real memories of Frank Gifford in Monday.
Starting point is 01:33:02 in it football. Again, he didn't do anything. He was never going to give you the memorable call. I mean, for instance, you know, for those that criticized Joe Buck, Joe's given you some pretty important calls, memorable sayings, that kind of thing. I know there's a tremendous amount
Starting point is 01:33:18 of hate for him out there, but I think he calls a very solid game. 713-212-25790. Mel, on the west side of the Matt Thomas show. Mel, good afternoon. Hey, my friends. Hi, Mel. Same to you. What's up?
Starting point is 01:33:36 No, I just wanted to bring up one odd thing and then, but hear about Houston. Lexington winning. I mean, who all won this span of from now to then? It was like, well, the Rockets, 1, U of H1. I'm just talking for from the Houston spirit stands outside, you know? We all, all of Houston is we all rally and just, what makes happen to get, not just dine, you know? Anyway, happy New Year.
Starting point is 01:34:04 Oh, yeah, and then I wanted to say, are we finally going to get the hockey team? That's what I got to say. Yeah, thank you, Mel. I don't understand the first half of the question at all. Houston teams won over the weekend. Did you evade the Cougars win? Cougars beat Central Florida on Friday.
Starting point is 01:34:17 Oh, huge. Rockets won. Who do they play? They played in Friday. Oh, Philadelphia? Made you all in B look very, very like I could get to crap. Yeah. The post-game show on 790 was amazing.
Starting point is 01:34:30 I listened on time-downed out. Rod? Yes, 158. He was kind of succinct. That's brevity for him, my friend. That's exactly what it is. Yeah, they don't play again until Wednesday. So a nice little break for the Rockets.
Starting point is 01:34:41 By the way, again, Russ, doesn't play back-to-backs. I don't think the Rockets hide that. Usually he misses the second game of the back-to-back. He's going to miss the first part because... He wants to play in the O'KC. Who doesn't? Yeah. And now James can drop 60 on the Hawks.
Starting point is 01:34:56 Again, hopefully. Do you give me a puncher's chance to at least get a shot up against the Hawks? Get a shot up? Yeah. Maybe a putback. No, you think I'm going against those tall trees? I'd be lucky. I'd be the one.
Starting point is 01:35:08 Here's how it works out. If I'm in uniform against the hawks, I'm slow. I'm gasping for error. I'm the last one to the mid-court stripe. I'm the last one at the top of the three-point arc. James is like, I'm bored. I'll throw it to you, Matt, and then I would shoot it from my midsection with all of the little body of muscle that I have. And just pray that it hits the rim.
Starting point is 01:35:29 I was going to say, you're not even hitting rim. I don't think. Would it hit the backboard? Like the, maybe the top of it. It'd be like a massive clank. You might knock the backboard over. Hartnstein grabs the rebounding and think himself, do I score two more points or do I give the slow white man named Matt Thomas one more opportunity?
Starting point is 01:35:48 I think you're done after that. All right. I'm not playing against Atlanta. I'll be busy calling him a game. Okay. But, yeah, no Russ on Wednesday, Thursday. He will play against Oklahoma City. 212 is our time.
Starting point is 01:36:00 And I'm sorry for the call. I didn't understand anything. And he said on the, I think he was just asking about... He's talking about Houston winning and are we getting hockey teams? It's a good call. Yeah, the answer's no. No.
Starting point is 01:36:10 I mean, I'm not saying never. Yeah, yeah. Tellman seems interested. My gut tells me that Tim would rather be a tenant, not a tenant, not a tenant, a landlord as compared to an owner. I'm just, that's just something I'm guessing.
Starting point is 01:36:24 Okay. That if somebody wanted to come bring a team here, he'd be happy to, you know... Les Alexander's got a couple of Bill laying around. No, last one's no part of that. 713-212-5-790. Here's a great call from the history of the Matt Thomas show over the last 10 years. John in the woodlands on 7-90.
Starting point is 01:36:41 Hi, John. Yeah, I'm calling about the craft story. You know, one of Trump's buddies, you know, Robert, 300 other Republicans are arrested, too, along with the sting, like four different counties. You know, sex trafficking, money laundering, you know, prostitution. I'm out, you know, I wonder who owns, you know, crap may own that facility. What do you think? Well, that's not an opinion. It's either he does or he doesn't.
Starting point is 01:37:05 So I will give you no opinion because that's an opinionless question. Well, you know, that's the kind of people that Trump hangs around with, you know, criminals. Excuse me? That's the kind of person that Donald Trump hangs around with Robert Kraft and about 300 other Republicans, prostitution. So you're attaching Robert Kraft? Absolutely, yes. Absolutely 100%. I have to go.
Starting point is 01:37:36 We're going to lock him up. Lock him up. Hurry up. Hurry up. Impeached, son of a bitch. I think it's a disgrace. Well, he did get impeached. That guy was right on that.
Starting point is 01:37:50 John, actually, he must have the crystal ball in front of him. Prudent, yes. All right, 21, and it's the bad topic show. 713-212-5-7-90 if you'd like to get in. Believe it or not, today is all things about the show. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. Come on in. join us.
Starting point is 01:38:08 This is Craig Vizio. Vigio. Back to Matt Thomas on Sports Talk, 790. Oh, we're having some fun. You're home with the Stroves. 219 on Sports Talk 790. Few things have happened today. First and foremost, the Dallas Cowboys of a new football coach.
Starting point is 01:38:32 And there have been, at least through innuendo, that Mike McCarthy is not going to have a chance to bring in every one of his coach. that he wants that maybe Jerry Jones has told him you've got to keep some assistance around. Most notably, the guy that has been kind of the made Target A, Kellan Moore, about keeping him as his offensive coordinator. If you're Mike McCarthy, knowing there are there so many other jobs open, why would you want to take that job if you're not going to be able to handpick your staff, unless every other team in the NFL says you've got to keep some people around? I think maybe you're just that desperate to get back in and maybe
Starting point is 01:39:17 But isn't Carolina still open? Yes. Are the Giants job still open? I mean, you take the bird in the hand. Cleveland job, although the Cleveland job looks terrible. They still got some talent. I just remember, I mean, we're talking about being a year, a year ago from now, everybody wanted Freddie Kitchens.
Starting point is 01:39:36 He was going to be, he was the hot pick. Baker, Mayfield. them and all this stuff. And he's gone a year later. And it wasn't even... What was their final record? Like six and ten? Something like that.
Starting point is 01:39:49 I mean, everybody and their mother picked them to at least go to the wild card if not when the EFC North. Nobody, I don't think, had Baltimore doing the things that Baltimore had. Now, the thing that was the most interesting thing about the Baltimore Ravens going in was they traded a solid yet unspectacular NFL quarterback. Who was proven? I mean, let him do the Super Bowl for this, you know, very athletic, probably more as a running quarterback than as a passing quarterback in Lamar Jackson.
Starting point is 01:40:18 That was the huge risk that John Harbaugh took with the Ravens, and what he did is he coached him up and they made this Lamar Jackson become, in theory, not in theory, he will be the MVP of the NFL this year. I mean, it's a pretty, it was a very bold move, very risky option for the Ravens to take, and it absolutely paid off. I want him and Mahomes. I mean, sorry, Texans fans, Mahomes Jackson AFC Championship sounds pretty tasty.
Starting point is 01:40:48 How does Jackson versus Watson AFC championship sound? I saw how the first matchup between them went. Are you really one of those guys? What's that? That, hey, I know, I saw that nine weeks ago bit guy. It wasn't nine weeks ago. How long was it?
Starting point is 01:41:06 I'm guessing nine. I guess it was a while ago. But regardless of how long it was. Maybe it was around nine weeks. Probably seven or eight weeks ago. You're going to take a rather ordinary regular season Sunday. Because here's the thing. It's not about that they lost, man.
Starting point is 01:41:23 They got their ass want. But don't you think if the Texans go to Kansas City and win this game, that they are a different, completely different football team. And they would have been that that team that went to Baltimore. How can I say they're completely different when I just saw the first half of the Bills game? Well, here's the reality. This takes no brilliance to give you this analysis. If they play anything close to what they did against Buffalo in the first half, they'll be down 30 to nothing at the half.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Which I've seen them do multiple times this season. So why? I mean, look, it was a nice win. They rallied and all those things. It took a little bit of help from Josh Allen. Buffalo Bills are a good team. They're not the caliber of the Chiefs of the Ravens. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:13 But I don't want to think about that right now. Okay. I'll celebrate. I want to think about the fact that Buffalo had this really highly thought of defense with this cornerback that you weren't going to be able to throw against. Yes. And you did, especially in the second half. And oh, by the way, how many times did Kevin Johnson get picked on in the second half of that game?
Starting point is 01:42:32 Yeah, he was, I mean, he made a couple of plays early, but then the second half, he was really getting targeted. Really? And the worst part of it was for him was that Deshaun was calling him by name. I knew where Kevin was and I was going to throw over there. Basically saying, we know what you can do and what you can't do and you can't guard our guys. Kevin, you got nine tackles? Yeah, but you think Kevin Johnson on that plane was going, man, I did my job. If a cornerback's getting a lot of tackles, that usually means he's giving up a lot of catches. But it's so crazy.
Starting point is 01:43:05 the Taiwan Jones makes the last Taiwan Jones in the game Forever a Houston Texans legend That's a short list Put them in the Ring of Honor next year
Starting point is 01:43:19 No Because here's the thing They're going to be the Ultimate Texan homers They're going to put this one as the greatest Texans whenever What is the greatest Texans whenever Besides the number of the first 19 to 10? 1910
Starting point is 01:43:32 It will Here's how it goes Here's how it goes. 1910. Everything else is debate for number two, three, four, and five, and six, unless the Texans, I'll tell you what, they beat Kansas City and Kansas City. There might be a chance for it to be number one or one A.
Starting point is 01:43:49 Yeah, if they beat Kansas City, I think that's number one. You think about Rock, going on the road to a divisional playoff game, you are down to eight teams in the NFL. That is saying something. If you make the final four, which they've never done, yeah, that would be winning this week. and especially as almost 10-point dogs, that'd be the biggest one of the franchise ever. Yeah, I would be, and again, I don't know what the, I mean, look, my poll question has most
Starting point is 01:44:13 people, the majority having the Texans one, but it'd be hard pressed to find a lot of people outside of this area. But then, you know what? That's the exact same thing was said to Minnesota fans yesterday before the game against the Saints. Did anybody really think the Vikings outside of the state of Minnesota think they were going to win that football game? New Orleans was the 13 and 3 team, New Orleans on the home field, New Orleans on the
Starting point is 01:44:34 Dome Turf, Drew Breeze, all these receiving targets. Alvin Camara had two really good weeks to close out the regular season, their defense. And oh, by the way, Kirk Cousins doesn't perform well in the biggest games. All that narrative is now scrubbed. What is today's narrative for New Orleans? Honestly, it's three straight pre-off losses. Why is Sean Payton not calling timeouts? And Drew Breeze didn't come up in the biggest moments.
Starting point is 01:44:57 That's a narrative that flipped in 24 hours with one road team. I would like for the Texans to be able to flip that narrative too. Because I can guarantee you right now, again, you'll be very hard pressed to find anybody outside of the city of Houston thinking that Texans can go to Kansas and he win that football. Yeah, if they do go up there and do that, what does that mean for Andy Reid? That'd be interesting. I mean, 12 and 4, great season, got all this talent, especially on the offensive side, and then you lose. Mahomes is presumed to be 100% healthy, right? Presumed, yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:30 Do your stuff. Would he be fired? Well, what's out there? I think if you're a really smart organization, really, really smart football team, and you're going to fire a coach who takes you to the playoffs year in and year out, it's because you found somebody better. For instance, I'll give you an NBA example. Nick Nurse was the coach of the Toronto Raptors last year. Duane Casey. They fired Dwayne Casey.
Starting point is 01:46:00 Year after year after year, the Raptors are going to the playoffs and not advancing. He was literally coach of the year and got fired. Everyone's like, oh, no, this is the worst thing ever. What are you doing? Coach of the year. The Toronto Raptors as an organization said, we believe Nick Nurse can take this team the next level. It happened in the NBA a few years before that.
Starting point is 01:46:21 Mark Jackson won 50 games with Golden State Warriors. The general manager and the ownership of the Golden State Warriors essentially said, we think there's somebody better out there. And they found him in Steve Kerr. And then they became a dynasty for a half dozen years. So it does happen in other sports. The question is, is there somebody on Kansas City's radar that they think can come in here right away and take Pat Mahomes to the next level and his team? Look, here's the thing.
Starting point is 01:46:49 If the Chiefs lose the Texans, I don't think it's because Pat Mahomes has a bad game. I think it's because the Texans take advantage of a very porous Kansas City run defense and Hyde and Johnson, whomever else, and Deshaunzance wandson scrambles and makes plays. I mean, I can't imagine a week from today when we're talking. about this Texans Chiefs game. Oh my God, Pat Mahomes went 10 of 29 with three interceptions. I don't envision that being the way they lose. I think if the Texans beat the Chiefs,
Starting point is 01:47:18 it's a 31-28 back-and-forth brawl with both teams doing a lot of things offensively. Agree or disagree? Yeah, I think so. I don't think it's going to be any... It's got to be... That's the only way it's going to happen. The Texans defense is not going to stop the Chiefs.
Starting point is 01:47:35 I just don't envision any scenario. It's just not. where Pat may throw an interception because things are that going to happen. And sometimes you have to have turnovers to make difference in games. But I just can't see Mahomes. I mean, even the championship lost to the New England Patriots. He didn't have a bad game. Did he not?
Starting point is 01:47:52 Wasn't the New England scored last to win it, basically? Yeah. Didn't New England go down? They went down and scored and Kansas City never touched the ball. Yeah. So Mahomes won't be the reason why Kansas City doesn't win. It'll be because the Texans exploit the weaknesses of what Kansas City is all about. 228. It's a Matt Thomas show. Sports Talk 790. 713-212-5-790. In the history of this 10-year program, I traveled quite a bit with the rockets, and strange things can happen in a hotel room. Something very strange did happen. If you did not hear that, back in the day, that is next. Plus, more your phone calls 7-13-212-5-790.
Starting point is 01:48:29 The Houston Lunchtime Sports Conversation most respected by head coach Bill O'Brien. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Matt Thomas. in his career here in Houston. Of sorts. The Matt Thomas Show. 235 on the Matt Thomas Show. Good to have all of you with us here on this Monday. Tomorrow we'll visit with Josh Reese from the Athletic. Forget the Texans beat.
Starting point is 01:48:58 Guys are off until what you... Aaron Reese? And Josh Reese is somebody I know too. Aaron Reese, Josh's cousin will be on the show. It's the early signs of dementia kick in there. And then Wednesday, I will be in Atlanta. We'll visit with Oliver Luck, not Andrew, Oliver Commissioner of the XFL. You know, training camps, they're going to have it here in Houston. Every team, every player are coming to Houston for training camp. All eight teams.
Starting point is 01:49:32 Eight teams, really. That's kind of been an economic boost for the community to the city of Houston, right? Hotels, restaurants, food. Oliver Luck picked this up. Well, it wasn't the worst thing in the world. And then we'll get a check. We'll go to Kansas City. We may even go to Kansas City twice this week. It may be one of those situations. We want to check in twice. Just get two different viewpoints. Okay. And then Mike Donnie with his first, first weekly appearance on Thursday between 2.30. Yeah. Well, that's exciting. Is he going to join you from your hotel room? No, he's never been to my room before. And never been invited to his room. That's good.
Starting point is 01:50:01 It makes it kind of safe. He doesn't want to see what you're watching. Or wearing. Because I want to see him completely naked for seven to 12 minutes. That was good, Nick. there's a trouble spot here on this show you're sliding these sound bites into just the right time which is very troubling to me stand up turn around so I can take a picture of your ass
Starting point is 01:50:22 713-212-5-790 speaking on the road sometimes like well not sometimes a lot of time you and I are separated because of the NBA travel schedule and I happen this is what two or three years ago maybe two three years ago yeah because we're in a different hotel now maybe because of this
Starting point is 01:50:40 this is in Los Angeles and this is, you know, fire alarms are going to happen. Yes. They shouldn't happen between 10 and 1 Pacific time when I'm doing my radio show in Los Angeles. I'm just telling you they were the best team they ever had lost in the divisional playoffs to probably, to Baltimore one year and New England to the next.
Starting point is 01:51:01 Yeah. They just never could overcome. Thank you for the phone call. There's an alarm that should be going off on your home, and that's if you have dirty carpets. This is really, excuse my French, annoying A.F. Seriously. Fire alarm testing is like five times, not 50. I'm trying to do a major market radio show here in downtown Beverly Hills, California.
Starting point is 01:51:26 And this damn... Oh, really? Oh, you got my attention. Yeah? This testing will proceed for another five to ten more minutes, Ross. Five to ten more minutes, Ross. Jesus. We're doing fine.
Starting point is 01:51:47 There's no fire. I'm trying to discuss the Texans game against Tennessee. Oh, now you're putting a sweet little ginger voice on there. Hi, honey. How are you? Back to the alarms. Good Lord. How am I supposed to create radio greatness under these conditions?
Starting point is 01:52:13 I have been given a lot of obstacles in my life, Ross. Well, there be my lack of pronunciation of some people's names. Pronunciation. Whatever. Whether it be the bands playing in New Orleans, alarms in Los Angeles, but yet the show still goes on. The show must go on, and it does, the Matt Thomas show. I will not be deterred. Sports Talk, 790, 12 to 3.
Starting point is 01:52:38 All right. One more thing we've got to get to before we get to believe or not. We've got a couple phone calls coming in at 713-1-2-125. 790 is Ross and I make bets. Yes. We've done a variety of things, and one of them happened to be one of us singing a fight song if we lost the bet. Yes. I think, yeah, I can't remember what I was going to have to do.
Starting point is 01:53:02 Was I going to have to sing the U.S. It was a fight song v. Fight song competition. And unfortunately, and again, I will appeal the curtain back. Ross and know this, but sometimes you like to lose things just so you can come across as the guy that's really, really, um, he, he's, he's a man of the people, so to speak. Oh, is that why you wanted to, so you wanted to sing Texas Fight? Well, I didn't do that, but it made, it made people think, you know what, he's a man of all of us, and here's me singing in a bet I lost. Texas Fight, Texas Fight, and it's goodbye to A&M. Texas Fight, Texas Fight, and we'll put over one more win.
Starting point is 01:53:46 Texas fight Texas fight For it's Texas that we love best Hail hail The gang's all here And it's goodbye to all the rest Hey orange Yay white
Starting point is 01:54:03 Yeah long horns Fight fight fight fight Texas fight I don't know this part Texas fight Texas fight Texas fight Texas fight Texas fight Yeah Texas right The eyes of Texas
Starting point is 01:54:14 Are upon you All the live long day. The eyes of Texas are upon you. You cannot get away. Texas fight. Texas fight. For it's Texas that we love best. Hail.
Starting point is 01:54:33 Hail. The gang's all here and it's goodbye to all the rest. You know, I didn't realize how good that was. Wow. So fantastic. I love that. I'm going to put that as my new ringtone. Sucky, sucky, sucky.
Starting point is 01:54:46 Let's go. To Kelly and Jersey Village. That's fantastic. Hi, Kelly. Yeah, that was great. Getting myself into. I know. What's going on?
Starting point is 01:55:05 Well, I told you I was going to call back on Monday when we won. On Friday, I said I was going to call back because I was the only one that was cheering for our tech. Well, not cheering, but believing in them. And then I hung up the phone. with you and then I realized that you two have the Texans for the win and I just wanted to apologize. Thank you. I was the only one of the three of us that voted that said the Texans were going to win. And I meant that because they were the better team. It took them basically 42 minutes to figure that out. But once they figured it out, once JJ Watt got that sack and Deshaun did his thing and did the escapeability.
Starting point is 01:55:47 By the way, Kelly, will you take the oath with me never to criticize. to Sean Watson for holding on the ball too long, especially because he saves his team bacon so many times by escaping potential sacks. Oh, my gosh. I will take the oath of you. And Matt, I lost my voice at the game.
Starting point is 01:56:05 I'm kind of getting it back, but... All right. So, Kelly, you're right. Kelly, you're like our, one of our... You're one of the few females that call our show, so we appreciate you kind of laying it out there. How crazy did you get Saturday afternoon? covering that all right so set the same for us
Starting point is 01:56:27 were you at a tailgate before the game or are you just having to get to the stadium and go in your seats no my husband and I got there like a cue because he works night long story so I don't need to talk about all that but that's fine
Starting point is 01:56:42 we met some cool people on our way he had to work that evening so I was allowed to have all the fun for both of us and I completely did and I don't think I should say that on air. Say what on air? Well, okay. You know what?
Starting point is 01:57:04 I got no shame that. No shame. When Deshawn Watson escaped that sack, I shouted so loud. One, I had to go to the restroom. I had to go to the restroom, but then we went into overtime, and I had no time to go to the restroom. So you peed yourself. So when he escaped that check, no, well, a little. complete excitement but it was nothing to be alarmed about it's kind of like when you cough too hard you know
Starting point is 01:57:36 oh yeah exactly i know exactly that's like cough too hard and then i i blow a gas i totally understand you on that well kelly did you uh did you even the game that was so fun did you i'm so glad we didn't lose because i think as great as that game was leaving with that crowd and getting that the most one I've ever had at any sporting event. How many drinks did you have? Tell the truth. I don't think my boss listens to the show. So from 2 o'clock to 11.30 p.m. I had 12. Ross. We're going to tip the cap to her. Do we not?
Starting point is 01:58:21 Yes, we do. How many, nine and a half hours you had? How many drinks again? 12. beers or mixed drinks beers okay Kelly I want you to call us back on Friday
Starting point is 01:58:36 and tell us what you and the husband are going to do for the game where you're going to watch it and how many beers you're going to have and if you're going to pee yourself again well yeah I'm definitely not going to do the last two like I did last again but you know it's going to be exciting no matter what
Starting point is 01:58:53 all right Kelly we'll look forward to hear from you later in the week young lady. Thanks for calling. Okay, bye. Bye. Have you ever been so excited at a sporting event? You peed yourself? No. I told you I've only peed myself once in my life that I would then announce on the air.
Starting point is 01:59:09 Okay. That was when I was in the elementary spelling bee for KDISD. Wow. They probably never let you get a hold of that one or let go of that one. I didn't tell anybody. Probably still calling you pee pants this day. The word I lost on I was Bivwack. Bivwack. I couldn't spell that now.
Starting point is 01:59:27 I urinated into myself. Left side to Westbrook on the baseline for the tie. He makes it. And he's fouled. This is Russell Westbrook. One thing's for sure. I did not get my amazing style from Matt Thomas. Oh, Hammer job.
Starting point is 01:59:45 Oh, I just had the knock out. So I'm at Greenspoint Park playing Pokemon Go trying to take over these gyms. And this dude with no shirt on come up to me and ask me if I f*** around. And I was like, what? Then he said it again, and I see his card, and he came closer to me. So I dropped him. This Pokemon, ghost-dangerous, LOL. When I'm on my deathbed and somebody says,
Starting point is 02:00:12 you rush, you come to my bed and you're giving my last rights, I want you to play that sound bite so I can go to wherever I'm going with a smile on my face. You know, I'll put that on notice, Matt. Okay. Most of it, I thought we're going to play Matt Thomas, believe it or not, like things about your life. A lot of mistakes, man. We'll have some drinks. Don't worry, Matt.
Starting point is 02:00:35 I won't reveal any of your secrets. Good. Russell Wilson is a sexy quarterback. Get them all on your system. You can't play them after today. What? Why not? I don't know.
Starting point is 02:00:45 I just sounded better that way. And by the way, we are going to go to Vegas at some point. It probably won't be until 2022, the way things are going on the old Twitter. Oh, yeah. How are the follow? Can we follow the man? It's a 10-year anniversary of his show. Will you please follow SportsMT?
Starting point is 02:00:57 I've been stuck in the 24,000's forever. You know, you've got a plateau at some point, Matt. I'm plateaued. Unless you're going to get to a million. I should have said 25,000. Yeah. Or I should have done something externally viral. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:01:10 Like put out some nasty rumor where I can get a bunch of follows and then all of a sudden say, well, I was just kidding. My climb to 10K is very slow as well. I have been losing followers. I think Twitter is still clearing people out. Twitter's clearing out. And I've actually dropped some people that I thought were ride or die guys with the show.
Starting point is 02:01:25 Okay. And they're not. So I dropped them or what? No, just unfollowed. Okay. And they probably unfollow me back, which is fine. If there's anything I want from this show, it's ride or die. Matt, okay.
Starting point is 02:01:36 I'm okay with the people wanting a little variety. I'm not. Right or die. Because if you do, then we go to Vegas. Then we have a great time. At SportsMT. All right, five minutes left to go on the show. What should we do?
Starting point is 02:01:51 We should play America's fastest growing sports game show. We simply call it Believe it or not. Starting point is 02:02:45 Believe it. I rejoined Sports Talk 790 in 2010 after five years in Salt Lake City. Believe it or not. Not. That is correct. That was two years in Salt Lake and three in Minneapolis. Number two for the win. For the first year of my show, the Matt Thomas theme song was Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones.
Starting point is 02:03:06 Believe it or not. That's not. That is correct. We've been big time the whole time. Well, now it's big time in Blur song too. It's a match. It's kind of mixed, right? It's a match as the kids call it.
Starting point is 02:03:20 Line number two. Dwayne on 790. Dwayne, you're ready to play, believe it or not? Yes, sir. While at the Super Bowl in 2012, Ryan Leif walked off. my table after I asked a question about him recovering from addiction. Believe it or not. Well, that your table? I don't think that was your table. Not. Why are you, Dwayne today and not Bill? Because he's probably, probably won his bill in the last 30 days. You can only win once
Starting point is 02:03:47 every 30 days, so he wants to be Dwayne today. And I nailed it. Let's go. Statement number two, Dwayne slash Bill. The Nostra Thomas bit started because I correctly predict. the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA championship in 2011. Believe it or not. Yeah, that better be. That better be, believe it. Yes, but you're not winning anything. You can't use your own name. Hang up on them. Goodbye. Bye. That's right. And you were on your, we were in Vegas when they clinched and when they won the championship. You were jumping up and down on your bed significantly. A big time boasted downhill from there. It was. Johnny on 790. Johnny, you're ready to play. Believe it or not.
Starting point is 02:04:27 Believe it. When I had to paint a longhorn on my head, it was because the longhorns beat the University of Houston Cougars in basketball. Believe it or not. Believe it. No, it was because Roger Clemens didn't come back as an astro. He was playing for the Skeeters. That was a stupid bet on my part. I love that bet.
Starting point is 02:04:45 Jacob on 790. Jacob, you ready to play, believe it or not? Believe it or not was originally 15 questions and you had to get three correct answers to win. Believe it or not. That is correct. Believe it. Now you only need two. Statement number two for the win.
Starting point is 02:05:02 The first press conference carried on the Matt Thomas show was when the Astros signed Brett Myers. Believe it or not? Not. Believe it. Oh, it was. One of the biggest A-holes in Houston sports history. I have very, very vague recollection of that.
Starting point is 02:05:20 Sergio on 790. Sergio, are you ready to play, believe it or not? Yes, sir. There used to be a segment called Things We Get Segment. sucked into where I talked about YouTube warm holes and getting sucked in the TV shows. Believe it or not. No. Believe it.
Starting point is 02:05:36 Not. Yeah. Sorry. Yeah. That was a tough one because I think we only did that once or twice. It was not a great segment. We might still have the sounder somewhere. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:05:47 All right. And that's a show for today. We did it. That's the Matt Thomas anniversary show. That's it. Happy anniversary to us because you've been a part of it, I think 99% of it. Yes. 99.9.
Starting point is 02:06:00 Nick, you get 10 years, you've been with me a year, year, you're 12 to 14% into it? Yeah, we'll get your Rolex at year 5. Excellent. All right. Probably not.
